Latest / Brandon Fogal Evolution / #126 - Is Hope Essential to Being Human? | My Disagreement with Brian Cox
Transcript
- 0:00Do you need hope to be a human?
- 0:03I don't know if you exactly do in the way that I'm going to discuss it today.
- 0:07I have a disagreement with Brian Cox, and that might put me in unsafe territory
- 0:13because Brian Cox is brilliant.
- 0:16He's a genius.
- 0:18He knows so much about everything, it seems like.
- 0:22Quantum mechanics, quantum theory, quantum computing, everything.
- 0:28He is a very smart person, but this is something I disagree with him about.
- 0:34And this is a conversation that he had with Joe. This was back last October in 2024.
- 0:40So I can already tell the viewpoints of Joe seem to be a little bit different
- 0:45just watching that video compared to where he's at at this point.
- 0:50But we're going to get into all of this and discussing what it means to be human
- 0:54and is hope and necessity.
- 0:56My name is Brandon Fogel. This is Evolution. Let's dive into this.
- 1:00So in this sit down that these two men had together, they talked about a number
- 1:04of different things, but where we are going as a human species and with AI on
- 1:10the horizon, it's really not on the horizons now.
- 1:13It's like in our face, we see it and where we headed.
- 1:18Like sky is the limit. But as we get closer and closer to almost maximum human
- 1:24intelligence, knowing everything, if we knew everything, would that be,
- 1:28would there be any more reason to get out of bed when you wake up?
- 1:32When you talk, when Brian starts discussing this, it seems like,
- 1:35and he has in view, and it gets a little bit later into the sit down,
- 1:40that when he's talking about hope, he's talking about hope.
- 1:44Can I look out on the horizon and there's still more to conquer?
- 1:48There's still more to learn.
- 1:49Let's hear what exactly he says when they start touching on this topic.
- 1:54It's very enlightening.
- 1:55So if you remove that, if you remove any sense of not knowing what the future
- 2:02will be, you do remove hope as well as fear.
- 2:06So you could argue that some of the best, the essence of being human,
- 2:11some of the things that we value the most. and make us most valuable in the universe in this sense.
- 2:17Some of those things come from incomplete knowledge.
- 2:20I mean, surely hope does. How could you have hope and excitement about what's
- 2:24going to happen tomorrow if you know what's going to happen tomorrow?
- 2:26But don't you think that that just motivates improvement?
- 2:30That all that hope just motivates you to do better and get better?
- 2:33And don't you think that might be a feature of a biological organism?
- 2:36It's like you said when you're growing up, you said like when you're in high
- 2:39school or when you're young, Christmas, for example.
- 2:41Right. You know when you're at Christmas Eve? Yeah. Like, what am I going to get tomorrow?
- 2:44Yeah. It's one of the most wonderful feelings, isn't it? One of the most wonderful.
- 2:48Like, ah, you're in your presence. That's incredible.
- 2:50None of that would exist if you were one of these super beings.
- 2:55So I think maybe one of those most vital components. It's just for us that it appears magical.
- 3:02When you're comparing that to black holes colliding, like, is it really so important
- 3:08what you got for Christmas?
- 3:10Well, it's. Okay. So that right there, I'm going to take it a little different
- 3:14way than Brian is speaking about it. And I'm talking about in hope.
- 3:18I don't think hope is a necessity because I don't believe hope is eternal.
- 3:22And there is, there's a reason I, because I, I, I agree with the Bible and the
- 3:28Bible does not present that hope and faith are going to last forever.
- 3:34I'm going to read a passage from 1 Corinthians, the Apostle Paul in chapter
- 3:3813. He says, For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect
- 3:44comes, the partial will pass away.
- 3:46When I was a child, I spoke like a child. I thought like a child. I reasoned like a child.
- 3:52When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.
- 3:55For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.
- 4:00Now I know in part, then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
- 4:07So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three, but the greatest of these is love.
- 4:13This is a different interpretation maybe than most people. Most people don't
- 4:17take this from this when they hear that passage.
- 4:19When Paul says, now faith, hope, and love abide, these three,
- 4:23but the greatest of these is love, I would argue that the only thing that is
- 4:28going to last into the, I mean, not the only thing, but one of the things of these two,
- 4:33these three topics is going to last is love.
- 4:36Love is going to, it stretches from before time began and until,
- 4:40you know, the end of forever, you know, but faith and hope, you don't,
- 4:44we won't need faith in heaven and we won't need hope in heaven.
- 4:50We won't need to be looking forward to anything in the future because we will
- 4:54have everything we need, but that's not to say that we will know everything.
- 4:59I don't think finite creatures will ever be able to know everything.
- 5:05And when we think about God, this is like on an infinite different level than we are at right now.
- 5:13It's trying to explain something like, think of a small bacterial creature or
- 5:18even an ant, and you were trying to explain to it what the internet is or what an airplane is.
- 5:24And you even got into the ant's language and you started speaking about it,
- 5:28it would have no concept at all of what you were talking about.
- 5:33Even if you were making sense to it in its small, lower understanding,
- 5:38and you were clearly communicating, it would still not be able to grasp.
- 5:42Like talking about an airplane to an ant, he would have no frame of reference
- 5:48to even make sense of what you're speaking of and take that to a much greater degree with God.
- 5:55If we're talking about talking to God in the future and in heaven,
- 5:59what we can even understand of what it will be like, what life will,
- 6:03what existence will be like, it will not, it has no comparison really to this life.
- 6:09And we were not, we're not going to be able to see what it will be like,
- 6:13We're not going to be able to reach into it in the future right now that we have it.
- 6:18That beatific vision of seeing God face to face.
- 6:22And this is what is different because the Christian operates on faith.
- 6:27And in this, we take the Bible for what it is and we try to extrapolate it as much as we can possible.
- 6:34But it's still, it's a different language. It's a heavenly language.
- 6:38But when Brian talks about this and because it seems like he gets defeated and
- 6:43I hear this all the time from people that don't believe in heaven or even would
- 6:47want to go there because they seem it sounds like it would be so boring when
- 6:51it I don't know how it's not going to be boring,
- 6:54but I it doesn't seem like it is.
- 6:58And if this lower life can have such awesome beauty and grandeur and amazing
- 7:04things that we experience,
- 7:05how much more when we are fully developed, when we are fully who we were made
- 7:12to be, how much more at that time?
- 7:14And just because we won't know anything ever, we won't have the possibility
- 7:18of knowing anything ever. I still think we're going to be learning.
- 7:21This does go against like kind of a little bit what Paul says,
- 7:24we shall know fully even as I have been fully known.
- 7:28I don't think that you can make that say that that is omniscience.
- 7:32We will not know everything, but we will know everything possible that we could
- 7:37know as humans, but we're still going to grow in our relationship with God.
- 7:42It's not going to be static.
- 7:43It's not going to be stagnant. It's not going to just sit there and we're just,
- 7:47when's this going to be over?
- 7:49When's this church service going to be over? I'm tired of praising and worshiping
- 7:52God. We have no idea of how awesome God is.
- 7:59You think of the most beautiful, amazing thing in this created realm.
- 8:04I mean, I just think of looking at an awesome fire. And it's so fun to look
- 8:08at a fire, you know, a controlled fire and all that, you know. God is a consuming fire.
- 8:14God is, and how much that, but he's also a personal, he doesn't have a form,
- 8:20you know. You could say the son of God, Jesus has, he has a human form now because
- 8:25he took on humanity, but God, it says he's invisible.
- 8:29He dwells in unapproachable light.
- 8:32We couldn't even gaze at him for more than a second, you know,
- 8:37but it's going to be, I just get
- 8:39fired up when I think of God and that relationship that we are headed to.
- 8:46Because it will put all of this
- 8:48here in the best, the best moments in this life. It'll put it to shame.
- 8:52We won't even think about it. It's not to say that we won't have a remembrance of this life.
- 8:58I've heard before that I was overseas at one time.
- 9:01And I remember saying, talking to somebody and like, how will we not remember
- 9:05what life was like when we, when we're in heaven? How will we not remember what was going on there?
- 9:10And the person told me it would be the same as we're over here in Africa.
- 9:16It would be the same, like, are you worried about, are you thinking about your
- 9:20gas, your car back home, having a low gas tank, your, your, your gas in your car is a little bit low.
- 9:27It's all, it's close to empty, but it's back in America.
- 9:30You would have, you might remember that it might be something that you could
- 9:34pull from and like, but you're not going to be thinking about it.
- 9:37You're not going to be worried about you're in the here and now you'll have
- 9:40a remembrance of those events taking place. but it's like you got God front and center of you.
- 9:47You are actually living in perfect communion with your creator.
- 9:53This might sound like all pie in the sky, all nonsense, but it's what's going
- 9:57to unfold and it's what's going to be the reality that we're all going to eventually experience.
- 10:03It's something that we can take heart in. We don't have to dread going to heaven
- 10:08because then everything's going to be, we're going to know everything at that
- 10:11point. And man, it's going to be boring.
- 10:13It'll be the opposite of boring.
- 10:16We will know fully. We will know. There's so many things about my life that
- 10:20I already wish I understood fully. Why did that have to happen?
- 10:24Why did I have to go through that? And God is, he's the one orchestrating all the events in your life.
- 10:30He's, he's, the promise is in Christ, he will make everything that's happened
- 10:35to you turn out for your good.
- 10:38Everything. That is a strong promise, but it's a, an awesome promise and that
- 10:44it is a reliable promise. It is true.
- 10:47And a lot of these things that we just, we see the here and now, we don't see the future.
- 10:52We don't know what's actually gonna, what is how everything's gonna turn out.
- 10:56We don't, we have the expectation of it, but we don't know what it's all gonna look like.
- 11:01But it's going to exceed even our most hyper best expectations. It's gonna be awesome.
- 11:08So this is something I would disagree slightly with Brian because,
- 11:13and I don't know his full background and like what he believes about God and everything.
- 11:17But in this context of talking about hope, I don't think we necessarily need
- 11:23to have hope to things be amazing because we won't have hope in heaven.
- 11:28There's not going to be something that we're hoping for anymore or something
- 11:31that we're just expecting to happen in the future.
- 11:34We will have arrived at that point, you know, but love will exist forever.
- 11:40And that is the amazing gift that we will always have and be able to live in
- 11:46with God and Christ. All right.
