- 0:00Speaker 1: And speaking of icons joining us on the hotline, He's
- 0:02Speaker 1: joining us not from Brass County, He's joining us from
- 0:06Speaker 1: Las Vegas, Nevada. Is our good friend. The play by
- 0:08Speaker 1: play voice of the Fight in Texas, Haggis. That's Andrew Monico,
- 0:12Speaker 1: who's out there with some Aggie basketball going on. I
- 0:15Speaker 1: appreciate the time in a very very very busy time
- 0:18Speaker 1: in a busy week.
- 0:19Speaker 2: How are you today, my friend?
- 0:20Speaker 3: I'm doing great? But can we just stop? There's way Stevie, Ray, Fellini, Kean,
- 0:29Speaker 3: the King, George Strait. Where do I fit in this?
- 0:33Speaker 3: I feel like the old George, George Goebel, I'm the
- 0:36Speaker 3: I'm the brown shoes when everybody's wearing a tuxedo.
- 0:41Speaker 2: No, you're you're part of.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Uh, you're part of and both of us are going
- 0:45Speaker 1: to be very fortunate to be part of the the
- 0:48Speaker 1: restoration of the rivalry and uh both of us get
- 0:52Speaker 1: a chance to call on our respective radio networks. The
- 0:54Speaker 1: first broadcast of a football game between the Aggies and
- 0:58Speaker 1: the Loghorns since that fateful night thirteen years ago and
- 1:02Speaker 1: twenty eleven, the last time they played when they played
- 1:05Speaker 1: at Kyle Field. So this is going to be your
- 1:08Speaker 1: first Loan Stars showdown. So how pumped are you about this?
- 1:13Speaker 4: Very much so, very much so.
- 1:15Speaker 3: And I think it's because of as you know, Craig,
- 1:18Speaker 3: in our business, it's the relationships, right, it's the people
- 1:20Speaker 3: we know. And now you've added, You've added, not just
- 1:26Speaker 3: the absence, and everybody looking forward to this matchup.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Now the stakes get even higher.
- 1:31Speaker 3: As someone said to me today, it really is an SEC.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Semi final, right, the winner gets Georgia. That's what it is.
- 1:40Speaker 3: And I don't think we ever could have guessed this
- 1:42Speaker 3: when we knew that it was now sixteen teams. Texas
- 1:46Speaker 3: was coming in, Oklahoma was coming in. We all knew
- 1:48Speaker 3: we were going to play in Thanksgiving, but we never
- 1:50Speaker 3: knew it was going to be for this. So I
- 1:51Speaker 3: think it just makes it even more And Craig, I
- 1:54Speaker 3: have to say this, like I was thrilled that Notre
- 1:56Speaker 3: Dame started this season. I thought, man, that's going to
- 1:58Speaker 3: be a fun atmosphere. And then Missouri comes in at
- 2:00Speaker 3: number nine, Like that's going to be a fun atmosphere.
- 2:02Speaker 3: A Kyle Lsu we black it out on a Saturday night.
- 2:05Speaker 3: The Tigers are number eight when they come in, Craig,
- 2:08Speaker 3: I don't think it's going to match at all what
- 2:11Speaker 3: that's going to be like on Saturday at Kyle Field.
- 2:13Speaker 4: I really don't.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I'm you know what, I'm right there with you because
- 2:17Speaker 1: i can tell you I've been there for some momentous
- 2:21Speaker 1: games and seen some momentous Texas, Texas A and M
- 2:24Speaker 1: games in Austin. Obviously Ricky Williams record breaking day in
- 2:29Speaker 1: nineteen ninety eight, and then obviously you know, the last
- 2:33Speaker 1: time they played over at Kyle Field, And there have
- 2:35Speaker 1: been some great, great games down through the years and
- 2:38Speaker 1: all this stuff. But even I'm expecting a ratcheting up
- 2:42Speaker 1: even more so of the atmosphere. Is it safe to
- 2:46Speaker 1: say that, even even if in the aftermath of the
- 2:52Speaker 1: disappointment of the loss that crazy four overtime game at
- 2:55Speaker 1: Auburn last Saturday night, even in the aftermath, that it's
- 2:58Speaker 1: not diminishing what this is all about, because the Aggies
- 3:01Speaker 1: still have their destiny in their own hands. That they
- 3:04Speaker 1: win this week and win next week, they're gonna get
- 3:07Speaker 1: a they're gonna be SEC champions, you're gonna get a buy,
- 3:09Speaker 1: they're gonna be in the playoff. All of those things. Yeah, disappointing,
- 3:13Speaker 1: what happened in Auburn, but you still have all of
- 3:15Speaker 1: those things in front of you.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Yeah, Craig, that's exactly what it is.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Now. I think the margin of error for the twelve
- 3:21Speaker 3: team playoff is much tougher. And I will say this
- 3:24Speaker 3: if they're fortunate enough to win on Saturday, but then
- 3:26Speaker 3: losing the championship. I don't know if a four lost
- 3:29Speaker 3: team gets in that playoff. So that's what I think
- 3:31Speaker 3: went away in the four overtime game at Auburn. But
- 3:35Speaker 3: what Mike Elko has said all week, it's in your hands.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Even through all of that, it's in your hands, Craig.
- 3:41Speaker 3: In twenty twenty, we needed help and we're on the
- 3:42Speaker 3: outside looking in when into that four team playoff at
- 3:45Speaker 3: that time, Notre Dame got in and Ohio State got
- 3:48Speaker 3: in a and m was number five there, and Mike
- 3:50Speaker 3: has told his team, look, it's in your hands. You
- 3:53Speaker 3: don't need help from anybody. And that's if there's a
- 3:57Speaker 3: good thing that comes out of that, besides playing a
- 4:00Speaker 3: classic game like that you do. Everything is within your grasp.
- 4:04Speaker 3: If you play well enough and you're fortunate to win.
- 4:07Speaker 3: This is what's next Atlanta, And to me to cap
- 4:10Speaker 3: off Mike Elko's first season.
- 4:12Speaker 4: I think he would be ahead of schedule, but it
- 4:13Speaker 4: would be a heck of a season, for sure.
- 4:15Speaker 2: No question about it.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Visiting with Andrew Monico, who played by play voice for
- 4:19Speaker 1: Texas A and him when we visited in August, and
- 4:23Speaker 1: we did so after the big press conference with Cotton
- 4:26Speaker 1: Holdings and the announcement and all that stuff, and we
- 4:29Speaker 1: got a chance to step on stage together and had
- 4:31Speaker 1: a fun time. But when we visited with August, and
- 4:34Speaker 1: this is a fallo up to what you said a
- 4:35Speaker 1: few moments ago, there's no way we could have fore
- 4:39Speaker 1: cast or foreseen this playing out the way they did.
- 4:42Speaker 1: So with that in mind, what has stood out to
- 4:46Speaker 1: you the most about the Aggie season this year? Both
- 4:50Speaker 1: the good and if there's a disappointment, what the disappointment
- 4:52Speaker 1: would be. But what is really grabbed your attention as
- 4:56Speaker 1: much as anything else about this season of Aggie football.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Craig, I think the recency bias.
- 5:02Speaker 3: I'll tell you that the defense the last two road
- 5:05Speaker 3: games has been disappointing. I thought that was going to
- 5:07Speaker 3: be the strength, and I thought possibly in a game
- 5:10Speaker 3: like South Carolina, you know what, not the defense is
- 5:12Speaker 3: night let the offense carry it well. The offense tried
- 5:15Speaker 3: to carry that defense, I think because there were so
- 5:17Speaker 3: many explosive plays at Auburn falling behind twenty one nothing,
- 5:21Speaker 3: which I don't care what conference you're in, you can't
- 5:24Speaker 3: do that on the road.
- 5:25Speaker 2: For that.
- 5:26Speaker 4: I like the development of Marcel Reid. I like the
- 5:28Speaker 4: way this team has improved.
- 5:30Speaker 3: I like that the message more than anything, Craig, I
- 5:32Speaker 3: think the message by Mike Elco is being received when
- 5:35Speaker 3: he talks about and that consistency of message. You're seeing strain,
- 5:39Speaker 3: you're seeing effort, and Craig, when something goes wrong, they
- 5:42Speaker 3: don't point fingers, and I think that was a problem
- 5:45Speaker 3: before Mike got here for a couple of seasons.
- 5:47Speaker 4: So you look in the mirror and he's the first one.
- 5:50Speaker 3: The defense has really been fun to watch, having seen
- 5:53Speaker 3: it for four years when Mike was a DC here,
- 5:56Speaker 3: and you can see how they get better week by
- 5:58Speaker 3: week by week. And to me, Craig, I think it's
- 6:01Speaker 3: fascinating that how many times have we gone into a
- 6:05Speaker 3: week and said, boy, the offensive line better be good
- 6:07Speaker 3: because this SEC opponent has two really good edge rushers
- 6:11Speaker 3: or great linebackers. Aggie's are going to face that again
- 6:15Speaker 3: on this Saturday. Texas is defense. You gotta take care
- 6:19Speaker 3: of the basketball excut basket. Sorry, you know where I
- 6:21Speaker 3: am football. I love what Trooper Taylor says that, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 3: to all his running backs, ball security is job security.
- 6:29Speaker 3: That's going to apply to Marcel Reid and all the
- 6:31Speaker 3: wide receivers as well, because Texas just dominates, whether it's
- 6:35Speaker 3: the interceptions or forcing those fumbles, but week to week
- 6:39Speaker 3: to see them get better. The disappointment to Notre Dame,
- 6:41Speaker 3: but then the elation of winning on the road at
- 6:43Speaker 3: Florida and doing it convincingly, and then just stacking these
- 6:47Speaker 3: wins and really for the most part being a top
- 6:49Speaker 3: the SEC for most of the season. I think has
- 6:52Speaker 3: been really a pleasure to watch. And it tells me
- 6:54Speaker 3: that this team's received Mike's message.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah, you brought up Marcel Reid and Sark was asked
- 7:00Speaker 1: about him at the news conference yesterday and he talked
- 7:02Speaker 1: about how tough he is and also how elusive he
- 7:07Speaker 1: can be.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Uh is that you know when uh.
- 7:11Speaker 1: When they were the struggles early on and then and
- 7:14Speaker 1: then Connor Wigman got banged up as well as with
- 7:16Speaker 1: the struggles, then when Marcel got in. There was that
- 7:20Speaker 1: the big leaping off point that folks could see what
- 7:22Speaker 1: he was able to bring in terms of the total
- 7:25Speaker 1: package of the illusiveness and being able to make the
- 7:28Speaker 1: throws and be able to run and tuck it in
- 7:30Speaker 1: and run and take a hit if he had to.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think early when it was Florida,
- 7:35Speaker 3: when it was Bowling Green, when when Connor was still
- 7:38Speaker 3: out with the with the injured arm, I think he
- 7:42Speaker 3: would run more. And I think he goes through his
- 7:44Speaker 3: progressions more now does Marcel and runs when it's there,
- 7:48Speaker 3: but runs with his head up now looking looking for someone.
- 7:52Speaker 3: I've been impressed with the confidence that he has played with.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Look, they didn't he ran.
- 7:56Speaker 3: He ran with the ones all week leading up to Florida,
- 7:58Speaker 3: but he wasn't total he was going to start until
- 8:02Speaker 3: before that snap in Gainesville after Connor warmed up. Now
- 8:06Speaker 3: he knows he's the number one Craig. He knows that
- 8:09Speaker 3: he can be electrifying for this team. And I just
- 8:12Speaker 3: think he's becoming more of a complete quarterback.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Mike made me laugh.
- 8:16Speaker 3: He said, you know, in the old days, when you
- 8:18Speaker 3: called a quarterback a dual threat quarterback. He couldn't throw, right,
- 8:21Speaker 3: it was just a running quarterback. I was joking with
- 8:24Speaker 3: Quinn Grovey at Arkansas about that. He was going, Yep, yep,
- 8:28Speaker 3: that's exactly right. But I think those days of I
- 8:31Speaker 3: think those days of dual threat quarterbacks, that label being
- 8:34Speaker 3: can't throw, I think that's gone.
- 8:36Speaker 4: And Marcel does.
- 8:37Speaker 3: He does have a good arm and he's starting to
- 8:39Speaker 3: get that rapport with the wide receivers Noah Thomas and
- 8:41Speaker 3: Jibrie Barber and Jada Walker.
- 8:43Speaker 4: That's what's really helped in Craig. You know, that's the experience.
- 8:46Speaker 3: He had never played in an SEC road game. The
- 8:49Speaker 3: one game he played he had to play for Jalen Henderson.
- 8:52Speaker 3: That's neutral site, that was you know, that's Reliance Stadium,
- 8:55Speaker 3: that's NRG in Houston, you know what I mean.
- 8:57Speaker 4: So a lot of these things are really new for him.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And when you start going up against these defensive coordinators, Craig,
- 9:03Speaker 3: they want to show Marcel something he's never seen before.
- 9:06Speaker 4: So that's that's to me, that's that's.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Where you see the blossoming of a young quarterback where
- 9:10Speaker 3: he doesn't panic, you don't see you don't see him freeze.
- 9:14Speaker 3: I think when you can see that confidence in a youngster.
- 9:16Speaker 3: It's it's impressive. It's one thing to play college football, right, Craig,
- 9:19Speaker 3: It's another to play college football in the SEC and
- 9:21Speaker 3: play it well.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Absolutely absolutely.
- 9:24Speaker 1: With regard to the defense, who have been games when
- 9:26Speaker 1: they've looked spectacular and then there are games like you said,
- 9:28Speaker 1: there was some leakage because of explosive offenses that both
- 9:32Speaker 1: Alvred and South Carolina show. What's your take on where
- 9:34Speaker 1: the Aggie defense is right now?
- 9:36Speaker 3: Their defensive line is what you have to be excited about,
- 9:39Speaker 3: and that's where you build from with here with Nick
- 9:41Speaker 3: Gorton coming back to Brian, Brian high school kid, but
- 9:45Speaker 3: he comes from Purduing Cash his hell. On the other end,
- 9:47Speaker 3: I really thought Shamar Turner staying and not going to
- 9:50Speaker 3: the NFL solidifies.
- 9:51Speaker 4: The interior of that line.
- 9:53Speaker 3: He and Albert Regis and Mike Elko always had that
- 9:57Speaker 3: in his four years here, and Craig, you know that
- 9:59Speaker 3: was also strength of the Wrecking Crews in the past.
- 10:02Speaker 3: That defensive line and that front four helps the back
- 10:05Speaker 3: seven and with a Mike Elko and a J. Bateman defense,
- 10:09Speaker 3: they're going to bring some pressure. You just never know
- 10:11Speaker 3: where it's coming from and you're not always sure when
- 10:14Speaker 3: it's going to come. I like that aggressiveness of this defense. Now,
- 10:18Speaker 3: can't have the ball go over the top and over
- 10:20Speaker 3: your head. That's what happened at Auburn. And the problem
- 10:23Speaker 3: at South Carolina was miss tackles and when they missed
- 10:26Speaker 3: Leonora Sellers that was becoming an explosive play.
- 10:29Speaker 4: So it was the double whammy. Do you think you
- 10:32Speaker 4: have the sack now all of.
- 10:33Speaker 3: A sudden, it's a twenty twenty five yard game. The
- 10:36Speaker 3: problem is it's kind of been different problems in the
- 10:38Speaker 3: last two games, and Mike's trying to figure that out.
- 10:41Speaker 3: But to me, I think that's a defense that you
- 10:43Speaker 3: can can flat out trust because I even going into
- 10:46Speaker 3: this season, I thought it was going to be a strength.
- 10:48Speaker 3: It's the offense that I think has surprised me a
- 10:50Speaker 3: little bit. I don't want to say overachieved, but they
- 10:52Speaker 3: played better than I thought they would this season. I
- 10:54Speaker 3: thought it would take a little longer to gel.
- 10:57Speaker 1: What have your broadcast partners told you about this particular game,
- 11:04Speaker 1: Because Dave Elwndor played in the game. Yeah, and and
- 11:08Speaker 1: and as broadcast a many times, he's your analyst. Will
- 11:12Speaker 1: Johnson on the sideline. He's been around it a long
- 11:14Speaker 1: time as well. What have they told you about what
- 11:16Speaker 1: to expect in this game?
- 11:18Speaker 3: You know, here's where they're really good. Craig, They kind
- 11:20Speaker 3: of they kind of watch it now through my eyes,
- 11:23Speaker 3: especially Elmo Elmo. Elmo is interesting because in his years
- 11:28Speaker 3: when freshman could not play as a sophomore, junior and
- 11:32Speaker 3: a senior, they weren't good results for Dave. Texas would
- 11:37Speaker 3: go on to win a national championship, you know, James
- 11:39Speaker 3: Street and that.
- 11:41Speaker 4: But we've talked about this.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Dave's roommate with the Rams was a long worn I
- 11:46Speaker 3: think there's a lot of respect of it, you know,
- 11:48Speaker 3: So I think that's that was that's the respect in Craig.
- 11:50Speaker 3: You know, these are kids who played with one another
- 11:53Speaker 3: who now go to separate schools. And whether you're in
- 11:55Speaker 3: the same household, it could be an all Aggie household,
- 11:57Speaker 3: could be an all Longhorn household, it could be a
- 11:59Speaker 3: divided house. So that I think is what makes us
- 12:02Speaker 3: even more And and Craig is as you know, this
- 12:04Speaker 3: isn't just a Texas rivalry, it's a national rivalry. Anybody
- 12:07Speaker 3: who grew up anywhere New that this time of year
- 12:10Speaker 3: you were going to watch absolutely Longhorns. Yeah, and that's
- 12:13Speaker 3: and that's the thing. I think it's one of those
- 12:15Speaker 3: rivalries that captures so much imagination and you know, and
- 12:18Speaker 3: then the thought was, oh my gosh, we have missed
- 12:21Speaker 3: this this that we should we should be playing, you
- 12:24Speaker 3: know what I mean, like it should be that and
- 12:25Speaker 3: we played in every other sport.
- 12:27Speaker 4: You know what, now there's now there's no more excuses.
- 12:30Speaker 3: We get to do it and stakes makes it, makes
- 12:32Speaker 3: it even more fun, no doubt.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Now before I let you go, I got to ask you, uh,
- 12:35Speaker 1: tell me a little bit about uh, Buzz Williams team.
- 12:38Speaker 1: You're out there in Vegas, got a couple of ball games.
- 12:40Speaker 1: How about uh this team that he has that's uh
- 12:44Speaker 1: that looked pretty good in some early season games.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Yeah, Craig, he brings back some experience. Way Taylor comes
- 12:49Speaker 3: back for one more year to bring in Zurich, Phelps
- 12:52Speaker 3: from SMU, CJ. Wiltscher from Nebraska, and Pharrell Payne from Minnesota.
- 12:56Speaker 3: I think there are three transfers that fit what Buzz.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Wants to do.
- 12:59Speaker 3: But joining Anderson Garcia and Henry Coleman the third I
- 13:02Speaker 3: think when you have this many people, this many players
- 13:04Speaker 3: coming back, you're able to be really it's it's an
- 13:08Speaker 3: ambitious non conference schedule.
- 13:11Speaker 4: This included, but this is also.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Going to be you know, playing Texas Tech in Fort Worth,
- 13:16Speaker 3: which got moved because of this tournament in Las Vegas,
- 13:20Speaker 3: to go play Purdue, to have the back end of
- 13:23Speaker 3: a home and home in Ohio state. These are these
- 13:26Speaker 3: quite possibly could be three quad one wins. And if
- 13:28Speaker 3: he doesn't have this kind of veteran leadership and this
- 13:31Speaker 3: kind of experience coming back, I don't know if he
- 13:33Speaker 3: would do this. But he wants to build this team
- 13:35Speaker 3: up for the NCAA, is Craig because he doesn't want
- 13:39Speaker 3: it to come down to man, I hope we get in.
- 13:41Speaker 3: He wants to solidify that resume and and be good
- 13:46Speaker 3: now conference and postseason. But I think it's because of
- 13:49Speaker 3: the returning players that he can trust and I think
- 13:52Speaker 3: he really likes I really do, and they and they
- 13:54Speaker 3: play his style. I think he's able to do something
- 13:57Speaker 3: like this this season.
- 13:58Speaker 1: All right, looking forward to it. Hey, it's great to
- 14:01Speaker 1: hear from you. I appreciate check and carving out a
- 14:03Speaker 1: few minutes because I know it's a real busy time
- 14:05Speaker 1: out there, have fun out there in Vegas, and I'll
- 14:08Speaker 1: look forward to seeing you Saturday there at Kyle Field.
- 14:12Speaker 2: It's going to be a lot of fun.
- 14:13Speaker 4: My friend. I look forward to that as well. Happy
- 14:16Speaker 4: Thanksgiving to everyone.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and to you as well. Thank you. Andrew.
- 14:20Speaker 1: That is Andrew Monica, play by play voice of the
- 14:23Speaker 1: Aggies of Texas A and M.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Yeah, they're out in Vegas for some basketball. Then he'll be.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Back, obviously, and it's Texas and Texas A and M.
- 14:30Speaker 1: The kickoff will be, I'm told in the six forty
- 14:36Speaker 1: five range in our pregame coverage will begin with long
- 14:42Speaker 1: Orange game day coverage from the Thompson.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Hotel right in the right camp. That's correct.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Yeah, a great sight to go by the way, and
- 14:50Speaker 1: they've got the rooftop bar of it. It should be
- 14:52Speaker 1: a nice night for being able to watch the game
- 14:56Speaker 1: on Saturday night. So three point thirty is our pregame
- 14:59Speaker 1: start time for that with Longhorns Game Day and then
- 15:03Speaker 1: at five thirty we'll have the network pregame show and
- 15:08Speaker 1: again the kickoff will be right around six forty five
- 15:10Speaker 1: something like that from Kyle Field, and I'm sure it'll
- 15:14Speaker 1: break the attendance record, which I looked in their game
- 15:17Speaker 1: notes right now, is at one hundred and ten thousand
- 15:20Speaker 1: for a game with ole myths.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I think it'll go beyond that.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Didn't you check ticket prices yesterday and it said what
- 15:26Speaker 1: in the four digit number even for like end zone
- 15:31Speaker 1: seats or something like that. I mean, it's crazy what
- 15:34Speaker 1: the prices are. It's going to be the It's going
- 15:36Speaker 1: to be the highest priced ticket for a sporting event
- 15:43Speaker 1: this year, bar none.
- 15:45Speaker 2: So it'll be interesting. You what are you on earthing?
