SPEAKER_00: Hello, this is Jamie Bridges, and thank you so much for joining us for this week's podcast.
• 0:08
SPEAKER_00: All of our services are inspired and built straight from the Bible.
• 0:11
SPEAKER_00: Let's get into this week's message recorded at Life Community Church.
• 0:17
SPEAKER_01: Heavenly Father, I pray for our teenagers, for their leaders.
• 0:22
SPEAKER_01: Lord, that everything that we do, partnering with you, is so exciting.
• 0:28
SPEAKER_01: And I pray that they would get a taste of what it's like to partnership with you, King Jesus, to making you known, of baptizing new believers, and they would get a taste and a hunger to participate with you always.
• 0:43
SPEAKER_01: I pray that their next couple of days would be fruitful.
• 0:47
SPEAKER_01: And Heavenly Father, I pray for us this morning, for your bride that is gathered today, and I ask you, Holy Spirit, that you would be an editor to my words right now.
• 0:58
  SPEAKER_01: In Jesus' name.
• 0:59
  SPEAKER_01: Amen.
• 1:01
  SPEAKER_01: Amen.
• 1:02
SPEAKER_01: Well, you guys, so we're in 1 Corinthians 10, and um we're almost done with this letter.
• 1:10
SPEAKER_01: Well, I want to tell you first that I have known that I was gonna preach on um 1 Corinthians 10 for about two months, which I'm very thankful for, Pastor, for giving me two months preparation because that is about the amount of time that I need.
• 1:24
SPEAKER_01: And so I want to tell you, and I know you already recognize this, the gift of God and call on our pastor's life that he delivers the word so accurately, so forcefully, so potently, week after week after week, he makes it look easy.
• 1:44
SPEAKER_01: It is not that easy, at least for me.
• 1:47
SPEAKER_01: Anyway, so I know you'll join me in that.
• 1:50
SPEAKER_01: Um back to this letter.
• 1:53
SPEAKER_01: So you guys maybe know there's all this whole book is a library.
• 1:58
SPEAKER_01: There's all kinds of texts in it.
• 2:00
  SPEAKER_01: There's genealogies, there's history, there's prophecy, there's parables, there's poems, there are letters.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_01: And we're in 1 Corinthians right now, which is a letter that Paul wrote when he was living in Ephesus to the Corinthians.
• 2:17
SPEAKER_01: And I want to remind us that he was their pastor.
• 2:20
SPEAKER_01: He built this church, he brought this gathering together.
• 2:25
SPEAKER_01: So when he's writing the letter, he knows them, he loves them.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_01: So it's a little different for us because we read this letter.
• 2:34
SPEAKER_01: Paul doesn't know us, I don't know Paul, I've never laid eyes on Paul.
• 2:38
SPEAKER_01: But Paul knew these people.
• 2:41
SPEAKER_01: Um, Kelly and I, we were teaching in 1 Corinthians all winter long in our small group, and the idea of this as a letter, and just like the nitty-gritty of it, captured my attention.
• 2:54
SPEAKER_01: How does mail work in the first century?
• 2:57
SPEAKER_01: How does mail work in the 21st century?
• 3:00
  SPEAKER_01: I do not know.
• 3:02
  SPEAKER_01: Gregory, what is happening?
• 3:04
SPEAKER_01: And you're like, drop it off.
• 3:05
SPEAKER_01: Sometimes in Colombia, they'll get it that day.
• 3:09
  SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what?
• 3:10
SPEAKER_01: How does this even happen?
• 3:12
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
• 3:13
  SPEAKER_01: And I don't, I'm not looking into it.
• 3:16
SPEAKER_01: But I was curious about first century mail.
• 3:20
SPEAKER_01: First century mail, it would have taken a whole week for the letter to get carried from Ephesus to Corinth.
• 3:29
  SPEAKER_01: Letter writing was expensive.
• 3:32
SPEAKER_01: Scholars believe it could have taken$300 to$800 to write the book of Corinthians, Romans, even more.
• 3:41
SPEAKER_01: Um, Paul, I always envisioned, I was laughing because last week our little sheet for kids and my kids shows a picture of Paul sitting at a desk writing.
• 3:50
SPEAKER_01: It didn't happen like that.
• 3:52
SPEAKER_01: Paul was scribing, he was having someone write the letter for him.
• 3:57
SPEAKER_01: He says, even at the end of the chapter, he says it, and you're like, why did he say that?
• 4:03
SPEAKER_01: He says, I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand.
• 4:07
  SPEAKER_01: He's saying, I'm stamping it.
• 4:09
SPEAKER_01: All the words here, I scribed, I said, you can see my my handwriting right here.
• 4:15
SPEAKER_01: I'm vouching for what's in this letter.
• 4:18
SPEAKER_01: Because it was so expensive, um, they wouldn't use punctuation.
• 4:22
SPEAKER_01: The ancient Greek, there's no punctuation, there are no spaces, it's just a giant run-on paragraph.
• 4:32
SPEAKER_01: Now, you know the language, so you can look at it and you're like, okay, I can pick up those words.
• 4:40
SPEAKER_01: You know, but it'll take you a second.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_01: You wouldn't just be like, go and read it.
• 4:44
SPEAKER_01: You would have to be like, okay, where's the pauses?
• 4:47
  SPEAKER_01: Where are my breaks?
• 4:49
  SPEAKER_01: Where's the exclamation?
• 4:51
SPEAKER_01: I'm telling you, I'm learning Greek this summer.
• 4:53
  SPEAKER_01: It ain't easy.
• 4:54
  SPEAKER_01: It is not easy.
• 4:57
SPEAKER_01: It's not my first language either.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_01: Anyway, so they would practice.
• 5:01
SPEAKER_01: And that is the other thing.
• 5:03
SPEAKER_01: There would be people who would read the letter.
• 5:07
SPEAKER_01: So when this got to Corinth, they didn't just like read it that day.
• 5:11
  SPEAKER_01: They're like, guess what?
• 5:13
SPEAKER_01: We have a letter from Paul.
• 5:14
SPEAKER_01: Next week we're gonna gather it together.
• 5:16
SPEAKER_01: Someone's gonna read it aloud.
• 5:18
SPEAKER_01: It was always read aloud, and it would have been read by someone called a lector, someone who was a professional reader.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_01: They would have practiced, they almost would have performed the letter.
• 5:31
SPEAKER_01: They would know where the pauses were, they would know where the inflections were, they would know where to place emphasis.
• 5:37
SPEAKER_01: It was almost like performance.
• 5:40
SPEAKER_01: The other thing that I loved hearing about was the um evolution of the letter carrier.
• 5:48
SPEAKER_01: So, firstly, Paul used free carriers.
• 5:52
  SPEAKER_01: Who's going to where?
• 5:53
SPEAKER_01: Can you take my letter with you?
• 5:55
  SPEAKER_01: When are you leaving?
• 5:56
  SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
• 5:56
SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna give it to you.
• 5:57
SPEAKER_01: I need you to deliver it.
• 5:59
SPEAKER_01: Well, the problem with that was they would deliver it.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_01: They had no idea who Paul was.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_01: They didn't know what Paul wanted to say in this letter.
• 6:07
SPEAKER_01: Then we have 2 Corinthians, like, you misunderstood what I said.
• 6:11
SPEAKER_01: Even today, we're misunderstooding what he said.
• 6:15
SPEAKER_01: And so sometimes the carrier would say, Listen, I can help you.
• 6:19
SPEAKER_01: I was in the room when Paul was writing the letter.
• 6:22
SPEAKER_01: It was a communal affair.
• 6:24
SPEAKER_01: Paul is talking, the scribe is scribing, people are in and out of the room.
• 6:28
SPEAKER_01: So a lot of scholars believe that Phoebe was probably in the room when he wrote Romans.
• 6:35
SPEAKER_01: She delivered the letter to Rome.
• 6:38
SPEAKER_01: She delivered possibly the letter to Rome with her words.
• 6:43
SPEAKER_01: I tell you all that because there's a great line in Acts where Paul's been languishing in prison for a few years in Caesarea, and he's kind of like a novelty.
• 6:56
SPEAKER_01: Governors come and go, and when they um come, they're like, You should meet this prisoner I have.
• 7:03
  SPEAKER_01: He's so interesting, he's so learned.
• 7:05
SPEAKER_01: So they kind of like bring him out as a little show and he'll talk.
• 7:09
SPEAKER_01: Well, Felix does this in front of King Agrippa, and Paul is telling his whole story, and King Agrippa says, Paul, your great learning has made you mad.
• 7:21
  SPEAKER_01: I love that saying.
• 7:22
  SPEAKER_01: I think it's so fun.
• 7:24
SPEAKER_01: And here's what I'm telling you: my great learning or my little learning.
• 7:27
SPEAKER_01: It is making me fall in love with the God of the Bible so much more.
• 7:32
SPEAKER_01: Knowing how the mail was carried, knowing how the Greeks wrote and read, knowing how letters were delivered.
• 7:41
SPEAKER_01: It makes me understand that Jesus is who he said he was, and it builds my faith so much more.
• 7:48
SPEAKER_01: So I hope that does for you too.
• 7:50
SPEAKER_01: That's my long intro, or short, however you want to measure it, to the letter.
• 7:57
SPEAKER_01: So I want you to experience the letter as the Corinthians would have experienced it, and that is with their ears.
• 8:06
SPEAKER_01: They wouldn't have read it, they wouldn't have had their Bibles in front of them, they wouldn't have been following along, they would have been trying to catch whatever they could catch with their ears.
• 8:16
SPEAKER_01: And so that's what I want you to do.
• 8:18
SPEAKER_01: And I love this kind of listening.
• 8:21
SPEAKER_01: I encourage you to try it at home to listen to the Bible and just see what the Holy Spirit perks in your spirit.
• 8:31
SPEAKER_01: Do you want me to answer that?
• 8:35
  SPEAKER_01: All right.
• 8:35
SPEAKER_01: So if you're ready, I want your mouths closed.
• 8:40
SPEAKER_01: If you want to help you focus, you can close your eyes.
• 8:43
  SPEAKER_01: Ears open.
• 8:44
SPEAKER_01: Here's the tenth chapter of Paul to the Corinthians.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_01: For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.
• 9:03
SPEAKER_01: They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
• 9:09
SPEAKER_01: They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink.
• 9:16
SPEAKER_01: They drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
• 9:24
SPEAKER_01: Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them.
• 9:28
SPEAKER_01: Their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
• 9:32
SPEAKER_01: Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.
• 9:42
SPEAKER_01: Do not be idolaters as some of them them were.
• 9:48
SPEAKER_01: As it is written, the people sat down to eat and drink, they got up to indulge in revelry.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_01: We should not commit sexual immorality as some of them did, and in one day twenty three thousand of them were killed.
• 10:08
SPEAKER_01: We should not test Christ as some of them did, and were killed by snakes, and we should not grumble as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel.
• 10:21
SPEAKER_01: These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us on whom the culmination of the ages has come.
• 10:33
SPEAKER_01: So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall.
• 10:42
SPEAKER_01: No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind.
• 10:48
  SPEAKER_01: And God is faithful.
• 10:51
SPEAKER_01: He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.
• 10:56
SPEAKER_01: But when you are tempted, he will also provade a way out so that you can endure it.
• 11:03
SPEAKER_01: Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
• 11:10
SPEAKER_01: I speak to sensible people, judge for yourselves what I say.
• 11:14
SPEAKER_01: Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ?
• 11:24
SPEAKER_01: And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
• 11:30
SPEAKER_01: Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body, for we all share the one loaf.
• 11:40
SPEAKER_01: Consider the people of Israel.
• 11:42
SPEAKER_01: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar.
• 11:48
SPEAKER_01: Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything?
• 11:54
SPEAKER_01: Or that an idol is anything?
• 11:58
SPEAKER_01: No, but I do not want you, the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.
• 12:10
SPEAKER_01: You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons, too.
• 12:14
SPEAKER_01: You cannot participate in the table of demons.
• 12:18
SPEAKER_01: You can't have a part in both.
• 12:22
SPEAKER_01: Are we trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy?
• 12:27
SPEAKER_01: Are we stronger than He?
• 12:30
SPEAKER_01: I have the right to do anything, you say, but not everything is beneficial.
• 12:37
SPEAKER_01: I have the right to do anything, but not everything is constructive.
• 12:43
SPEAKER_01: No one should seek their own good but the good of others.
• 12:49
SPEAKER_01: Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, for the earth is the Lord's and everything in it.
• 13:00
SPEAKER_01: If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put in front of you without raising questions of conscience.
• 13:09
SPEAKER_01: But if someone says to you, This meat has been offered in sacrifice, then do not eat it, both for the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.
• 13:23
SPEAKER_01: I'm speaking of the other person's conscience, not yours.
• 13:30
SPEAKER_01: For why is my freedom being judged by another's conscience?
• 13:33
SPEAKER_01: If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced?
• 13:38
SPEAKER_01: Because of something I thank God for.
• 13:41
SPEAKER_01: Whether you eat or drink, whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
• 13:49
SPEAKER_01: Do not cause anyone to stumble, neither Jews nor Greeks, nor the church of God.
• 13:55
SPEAKER_01: Even as I tried to please everyone in every way, for I'm not seeking my own good, but the good of others, so that they may be saved.
• 14:05
  SPEAKER_01: That's 1 Corinthians 10.
• 14:08
SPEAKER_01: I've committed that to memory over the last eight weeks, and it's been these two pieces of paper have been my constant companion these last two months.
• 14:18
SPEAKER_01: And I wish if I could just download to you all the ways that the Lord has ministered to me, that the Lord has taught me, spoken to me, shaped me, changed my mind through memorization.
• 14:32
SPEAKER_01: This is a plug for memorization.
• 14:34
SPEAKER_01: I actually wouldn't download it to you because you can only get it by memorizing.
• 14:41
SPEAKER_01: And so those words just become a part of you and they literally change your mind, change your brain.
• 14:49
SPEAKER_01: If you don't like the thoughts that you were thinking all the time, change what you're thinking about and memorize his words.
• 14:56
SPEAKER_01: This is what I like to tell people.
• 14:57
  SPEAKER_01: Your words are stupid.
• 15:00
SPEAKER_01: Memorize his words, get some other words rolling around your head.
• 15:05
SPEAKER_01: Say his words over and over instead of the dumb rotation you've got going on.
• 15:10
SPEAKER_01: And I say dumb, ignorant because Paul did.
• 15:14
SPEAKER_01: I do not want you to be ignorant.
• 15:17
  SPEAKER_01: All right.
• 15:17
SPEAKER_01: So, Pastor Kelly, she um we ended last week in chapter nine and ended with Paul saying, I myself do not want to be disqualified for the prize.
• 15:31
SPEAKER_01: And he's using this language disqualify because as she um taught us, Corinth is five miles from Itsthmuth, which is where the I think I said that wrong.
• 15:44
SPEAKER_01: Anyway, it's five miles from the Ithmian Games.
• 15:47
SPEAKER_01: And a scholar say that this letter would have been written the year of the games.
• 15:53
SPEAKER_01: And so there would be many people participating in the games.
• 15:58
SPEAKER_01: And what it did, you had to qualify for 10 months, you had to commit to the training, and you had to show that you did the 10 months of training.
• 16:07
SPEAKER_01: If you did not do the 10 months of training, you're disqualified.
• 16:10
SPEAKER_01: Um, you had to be a free person at the time of the games if you are not disqualified.
• 16:16
SPEAKER_01: If you cheat during the games, disqualified.
• 16:20
SPEAKER_01: If you have unsportsmanlike conduct, disqualified.
• 16:24
SPEAKER_01: And Paul is saying, let's learn from Israel.
• 16:28
SPEAKER_01: A lot of your headers in um 1 Corinthians 10 will say um lessons from Israel's history, or the one that I like is um warning against overconfidence.
• 16:41
SPEAKER_01: He's saying to us, don't get disqualified.
• 16:45
SPEAKER_01: Learn from our ancestors, don't be ignorant of the fact that they were disqualified.
• 16:52
SPEAKER_01: And when I say disqualified, I'm not even meaning from eternal life.
• 16:57
SPEAKER_01: I'm meaning from life and partnership, partnership with Christ here on earth.
• 17:03
SPEAKER_01: Now we hear of the Israelites, they were slaves in Egypt for 400 years.
• 17:11
SPEAKER_01: They saw God miraculously rescue them out of Egypt.
• 17:17
SPEAKER_01: The plagues, crazy stuff, the um exit through the Red Sea on dry ground in the wilderness for 40 years, following a pillar of cloud, a pillar of fire, miraculous food, water from a rock.
• 17:36
SPEAKER_01: You would think, if I saw all that stuff, there's no way I would get disqualified.
• 17:41
  SPEAKER_01: They got disqualified.
• 17:44
SPEAKER_01: Their bodies were scattered in the wilderness, most of them.
• 17:48
SPEAKER_01: Two of them made it, Joshua and Caleb, and all of the Israelites' children.
• 17:55
SPEAKER_01: That generation didn't make it, minus Caleb and um Joshua, and their oh, the rest of their kids made it to the promised land.
• 18:04
SPEAKER_01: Moses, their leader, a man who God called his friend, did not make it to the promised land in his mortal life.
• 18:13
SPEAKER_01: Now, graciously, we see Jesus in the Gospels.
• 18:17
SPEAKER_01: He's mounting, he goes to the Mount of Transfiguration, he's with the disciples.
• 18:21
SPEAKER_01: Who does Jesus meet with?
• 18:24
SPEAKER_01: Moses and Elijah, who are long, long, long dead.
• 18:29
SPEAKER_01: Moses in his mortal life didn't make it to the promised land.
• 18:34
SPEAKER_01: Moses in his eternal life made it to the promised land.
• 18:38
  SPEAKER_01: Moses was disqualified.
• 18:41
  SPEAKER_01: How was everyone disqualified?
• 18:45
SPEAKER_01: We see it right here in verse six.
• 18:49
SPEAKER_01: Now these things occurred as examples to us to keep our hearts.
• 18:55
  SPEAKER_01: I just lost it.
• 18:56
SPEAKER_01: To keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.
• 19:02
  SPEAKER_01: Do not commit idolatry.
• 19:07
SPEAKER_01: And I say that and my my warning for us is don't think because we're in 2026, we don't commit idolatry.
• 19:16
  SPEAKER_01: We do.
• 19:18
  SPEAKER_01: We do.
• 19:19
SPEAKER_01: He says, don't commit idolatry.
• 19:22
SPEAKER_01: What is on your heart?
• 19:25
SPEAKER_01: And he says, to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.
• 19:31
SPEAKER_01: And when I was thinking about that, I'm like, what evil things do I set my heart on?
• 19:37
  SPEAKER_01: I am not running a sweatshop.
• 19:40
  SPEAKER_01: I don't traffic children.
• 19:43
  SPEAKER_01: I don't commit adultery.
• 19:44
  SPEAKER_01: I don't steal.
• 19:46
SPEAKER_01: I don't, whatever evil thing it is.
• 19:48
  SPEAKER_01: I don't do those evil things.
• 19:51
SPEAKER_01: And Paul later in 1 Corinthians, he uses the word, he says, bad company corrupts good morals.
• 20:00
SPEAKER_01: And that same word for bad is the same word here for evil.
• 20:05
SPEAKER_01: Bad things corrupt my morals.
• 20:08
SPEAKER_01: Bad company corrupts my good intentions to follow Christ.
• 20:14
SPEAKER_01: He says, Don't set your heart on evil things as they did.
• 20:19
SPEAKER_01: Here's a great definition that I discovered a while back, and it's from Tim Keller, and it goes like this.
• 20:26
  SPEAKER_01: What is an idol?
• 20:29
SPEAKER_01: It is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give you.
• 20:44
SPEAKER_01: And I wonder when we see you think of the Israelites, you're like, if I saw those things, I would not be tempted to have an idol, to take my gaze off of Yahweh.
• 20:57
SPEAKER_01: And Paul goes on to say, Be careful.
• 21:01
SPEAKER_01: If you think you are standing firm, be careful.
• 21:04
SPEAKER_01: There is no temptation that is common to mankind that you won't experience too.
• 21:10
SPEAKER_01: That word for temptation sometimes is translated tests, temptations, tests.
• 21:16
SPEAKER_01: They come internally from our own desires.
• 21:20
SPEAKER_01: They come externally as well from the tempter.
• 21:24
SPEAKER_01: Jesus himself, after he was baptized, the Holy Spirit led him into the desert for 40 days to be tempted, tempted by food, tempted by power, tempted by fame.
• 21:41
SPEAKER_01: And he did not fail that temptation.
• 21:45
SPEAKER_01: But that temptation, it may have been the preparation, the training ground.
• 21:51
SPEAKER_01: We know that he has fidelity to Christ, but to endure that 40 days so that he would be prepared, endurance for the next 30 days.
• 22:00
SPEAKER_01: Three years of his ministry and what was set before him at the cross.
• 22:07
SPEAKER_01: No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind.
• 22:15
SPEAKER_01: So common, so old, so ancient, it was the same thing that tempted Eve.
• 22:21
SPEAKER_01: Eve, who was walking in the garden, Adam and Eve both in the garden, no sin to be found, walking with him in the cool of the day, and bad company corrupts.
• 22:35
SPEAKER_01: Did God really say you could not have that?
• 22:40
SPEAKER_01: And the gaze shifts from him to the thing.
• 22:44
  SPEAKER_01: Paul says, flee, flee.
• 22:47
SPEAKER_01: Don't keep looking at the thing, or it is going to capture your heart and your imagination.
• 22:56
SPEAKER_01: God wants to be on that heart.
• 22:58
SPEAKER_01: This is no different than the Corinthians.
• 23:01
SPEAKER_01: In their city, there are temples everywhere, idols to worship, to get the needs that you have met.
• 23:11
SPEAKER_01: God says, I want to meet those needs for you.
• 23:14
  SPEAKER_01: I created you.
• 23:16
SPEAKER_01: I made you for relationship, for partnership with me.
• 23:20
SPEAKER_01: That word partnership is participation, it's koinonia, it's intimacy, it is deep fellowship.
• 23:29
SPEAKER_01: So intimate that the the root word is even the word for sexual relations.
• 23:36
  SPEAKER_01: It is that intimate.
• 23:39
SPEAKER_01: And we're partnering with idols, then we're not partnering.
• 23:44
SPEAKER_01: Paul told us earlier in chapter six.
• 23:47
SPEAKER_01: If you do that, you are partnering Christ with an idol.
• 23:53
SPEAKER_01: Corinth would have been lined with them.
• 23:56
SPEAKER_01: The temple of Apollos, the temple of Poseidon, the temple of Asclepius, the temple of Aphrodite.
• 24:03
SPEAKER_01: If you're looking for love and you're trying to find that mate, come here and worship.
• 24:08
SPEAKER_01: If you want children, fertility, come here and worship, offer a sacrifice.
• 24:14
SPEAKER_01: If you want to be the ideal man, this God is alive and well in 2026, being your most beautiful you.
• 24:24
SPEAKER_01: Apollo, sculpted, ripped, chiseled jaw, eloquent speaker, gorgeous.
• 24:31
SPEAKER_01: Come worship at this God and be your most beautiful self.
• 24:35
  SPEAKER_01: Be your best self.
• 24:36
  SPEAKER_01: Come to Asclepius.
• 24:38
SPEAKER_01: This is where your health, wellness, fitness, medicine, spa, it's all here.
• 24:46
SPEAKER_01: Asclepius, too, they found that at the base there's um a food hall.
• 24:50
SPEAKER_01: This is like socially where you're coming to worship for your health needs and then eat that meal together with others.
• 25:00
SPEAKER_01: And Paul says later, he says, Listen, this is nothing.
• 25:04
  SPEAKER_01: You're right.
• 25:05
  SPEAKER_01: This is nothing.
• 25:07
SPEAKER_01: I broke him, but anyway.
• 25:09
  SPEAKER_01: This is nothing.
• 25:11
SPEAKER_01: But the God that he represents is something.
• 25:16
SPEAKER_01: And I do not want you to be participants with that spirit, that God, that Apollos, that business, ambition, success, whatever it is that has captured your heart and your imagination, what's driving you.
• 25:35
SPEAKER_01: God says, I want to be that driver.
• 25:39
SPEAKER_01: I want to be on the throat.
• 25:40
SPEAKER_01: And so when I was praying and asking the Lord, Lord, incidentally, this is why I love that we choose to read the scripture like this in the summer.
• 25:50
SPEAKER_01: Pastors like, we're committing to 1 Corinthians, we're reading the whole thing.
• 25:54
SPEAKER_01: And so then it's been decided.
• 25:57
  SPEAKER_01: We are reading 1 Corinthians 10.
• 25:59
SPEAKER_01: So that scripture is reading us.
• 26:02
SPEAKER_01: And so, Holy Spirit, what do you have for us today on July 26, August 2026?
• 26:10
SPEAKER_01: What is it that you want us to hear from Paul in this letter?
• 26:16
SPEAKER_01: Pastor Sean and Shelly did such a great job a couple weeks ago with chapter eight and how what we do affects one another.
• 26:24
  SPEAKER_01: It should affect us.
• 26:26
SPEAKER_01: My worry is that it doesn't affect us enough, that we're living such separate lives that we come here and we worship and we go out quick.
• 26:35
SPEAKER_01: What you do does not affect me.
• 26:37
SPEAKER_01: What I do does not affect you.
• 26:39
  SPEAKER_01: That is not biblical.
• 26:41
SPEAKER_01: We are one body, though we are many.
• 26:46
SPEAKER_01: And so what you do should affect me.
• 26:49
SPEAKER_01: And what I do should affect you.
• 27:28
SPEAKER_01: And this is what it was.
• 27:39
SPEAKER_01: Am I trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy?
• 27:43
SPEAKER_01: And that's just it's a hard word, jealousy, but this is jealousy in a positive sense.
• 27:50
SPEAKER_01: If you have a young child that you don't want seeing something terrible on the TV, you are jealous for their innocence.
• 27:59
SPEAKER_01: You want to protect them.
• 28:01
  SPEAKER_01: You love them.
• 28:02
SPEAKER_01: That's jealousy in the positive sense.
• 28:06
SPEAKER_01: And our father is jealous for us, for our love, for our affection, because he knows what chasing all these other gods does to us.
• 28:18
SPEAKER_01: Pursuing a relationship outside of our marriage, he knows that that is going to destroy us.
• 28:25
SPEAKER_01: Pursuing health to the neglect of everything else, it's a good thing, health and wellness.
• 28:32
  SPEAKER_01: It's not a good God.
• 28:34
SPEAKER_01: Ambition, success, these are good things, food, sex, good things, not good gods.
• 28:43
SPEAKER_01: And he is jealous for that.
• 28:45
SPEAKER_01: He knows what pursuing that above all else does to you, does to me.
• 28:53
SPEAKER_01: God even went so far in the Old Testament, there's a whole book called Hosea.
• 28:58
SPEAKER_01: And it's written by the prophet, and God tells Hosea, I want you to marry a prostitute.
• 29:06
SPEAKER_01: And I want you to write all about it.
• 29:08
SPEAKER_01: What it's like to love someone who loves someone else.
• 29:15
SPEAKER_01: God knows what that feels like because our affections are taken off of him over and over and over again.
• 29:23
SPEAKER_01: The spirit of the age is still the same.
• 29:27
SPEAKER_01: It's all me, me, my, my.
• 29:32
SPEAKER_01: And he wants that, he wants our affections on him.
• 29:36
SPEAKER_01: I love what Pastor Kelly said last week that Paul over and over encountered God, encountered God, encountered God.
• 29:44
SPEAKER_01: The Old Testament is filled with um kings and leaders who were worshiping Yahweh, and then their gaze fell, and they were not.
• 29:55
SPEAKER_01: And then they would build temples and they would build high places and they would worship at those.
• 30:00
SPEAKER_01: And then they would realize they would counter the word and they would tear down the idols, tear down the high places.
• 30:07
SPEAKER_01: We're gonna do that over and over on this side of eternity.
• 30:12
SPEAKER_01: That's why we gather together because on our own we forget, and this thing starts looking better and better.
• 30:21
SPEAKER_01: It's why we need one another as the body to be reminded of what's good and true and important, and who we love and who we serve.
• 30:34
SPEAKER_01: I've we built in enough time at the end of this service that I want you to examine the altar of your heart.
• 30:43
  SPEAKER_01: What is sitting there?
• 30:46
  SPEAKER_01: Who is sitting there?
• 30:48
SPEAKER_01: What or who has gap uh captured your heart's imagination, your heart's affections, and tear it down.
• 30:58
SPEAKER_01: This is why fasts are so good and right and healthy and important.
• 31:03
SPEAKER_01: Because any good thing wants to become your God.
• 31:08
SPEAKER_01: And so it's a great exercise to remove the thing.
• 31:12
SPEAKER_01: I do not worship at the idol of food, I'm gonna remove it.
• 31:16
SPEAKER_01: I do not worship at the idol of whatever it is and remove it to show that is not who I worship.
• 31:23
SPEAKER_01: I can live without that.
• 31:25
  SPEAKER_01: I worship him.
• 31:28
SPEAKER_01: So there's time here at the end, and I want us to examine and remember: our God does not condemn, he convicts, he's performing surgery, not bludgeoning us.
• 31:44
SPEAKER_01: His goal is for you to be with him.
• 31:47
SPEAKER_01: So he's not going to butcher you, he's inviting you.
• 31:52
SPEAKER_01: Take that thing off and worship me.
• 31:56
SPEAKER_01: I am where your heart will flourish.
• 32:00
SPEAKER_01: Participate with me, participate with what I'm doing on the earth so that more will know who I am and have life and life everlasting.
