Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Dodgers' territory host and the athletics Katie were joining us
- 0:07Speaker 1: right now. Great to see you, Katie, and I'm rocking
- 0:09Speaker 1: the Dodgers Territory shirt, which you can get at Dodgers
- 0:12Speaker 1: Territory Shop dot com.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Uh, let's get right into it.
- 0:15Speaker 1: So Edwin Diaz unfortunately is going to be down for
- 0:18Speaker 1: multiple months, and we want to get the details on it.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I'm going to preface the question this.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Way for you, Katie, What is it like to cover
- 0:24Speaker 1: that over the last couple of weeks, because everybody from
- 0:27Speaker 1: the outside looking in was like, I think something's wrong,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and I'm sure you guys knew too, but then the
- 0:31Speaker 1: team has to play at koy until they can announce everything.
- 0:34Speaker 2: So what was it like?
- 0:37Speaker 3: Honestly, guys, one, great to see you, Scott, love the shirt.
- 0:40Speaker 4: AJ.
- 0:40Speaker 3: My eyes are deceiving me. I just can't believe that
- 0:42Speaker 3: you're on the show.
- 0:44Speaker 5: Wow. But no, let's talk a.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Little bit about at least he's not actually here, he's.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Ai AI AJ got it, it goes right through.
- 0:52Speaker 5: It was weird.
- 0:53Speaker 3: It was weird, right, guys. Like what struck me about
- 0:57Speaker 3: how unorthodox the situation was was that ended up loose
- 1:00Speaker 3: bodies in the elbow, and we were told throughout the
- 1:02Speaker 3: last week the Dodgers as well, that it was just
- 1:05Speaker 3: some kind of knee pain that didn't even require imaging.
- 1:08Speaker 3: And as this kind of unfolded, the thing that stood
- 1:11Speaker 3: out to me was the drop in below from Diaz,
- 1:13Speaker 3: because yes, you know it's early, it's April, but as
- 1:16Speaker 3: a closer, if you see the drop in below like
- 1:18Speaker 3: that does kind of race and red flags even that
- 1:20Speaker 3: early in the season. But when Dave Roberts went out
- 1:23Speaker 3: and said, we've talked to Edwin, it's a knee thing.
- 1:25Speaker 3: It's not we're going to require imaging. We're just gonna
- 1:27Speaker 3: give him a few days, that to me made a
- 1:28Speaker 3: ton of sense. Why push your closer in the first
- 1:30Speaker 3: opening weeks of the season when he didn't necessarily need him.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Then he comes out on Sunday Velo immediately I think
- 1:36Speaker 3: he pumped in a fastball that was under ninety three.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Very unlike Edwin, Diaz isn't able to record an out
- 1:42Speaker 3: against the Rockies, and Dave Roberts said, I'm paraphrasing here,
- 1:45Speaker 3: it just didn't look right and it was concerning. Then
- 1:47Speaker 3: he finds out or the team finds out that it's
- 1:50Speaker 3: loose bodies in the elbow, and Edwin Diaz had not
- 1:52Speaker 3: communicated anything about the elbow up until that time, so
- 1:57Speaker 3: guessing around the kind of here's what we're hearing from
- 1:59Speaker 3: the player, here's what we think is going on with
- 2:00Speaker 3: the team. I think that just goes to show that
- 2:03Speaker 3: communication is a two way street. And if Edwin wasn't
- 2:05Speaker 3: communicating about the pain and his elbow, there wasn't much
- 2:08Speaker 3: the Dodgers could do. They rested him, they they gave
- 2:11Speaker 3: him plenty of time, even though it was a very
- 2:13Speaker 3: awkward timing with the Mets in town last week and
- 2:15Speaker 3: now here they are probably you know, not the most
- 2:17Speaker 3: ideal scenario, obviously, being without Edwin Diaz for months. Maybe
- 2:21Speaker 3: he's coming back in the second half. It's a complicated situation.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Katie.
- 2:26Speaker 6: Before I get to my question, let me just be
- 2:27Speaker 6: the first one to say congratulations to you.
- 2:31Speaker 5: On Man.
- 2:33Speaker 6: We won't talk about it because there's it's not the
- 2:36Speaker 6: right place, so this is too big of an announcement
- 2:39Speaker 6: for us to do on the air.
- 2:40Speaker 5: So congratulations, oh my gosh for me being on the
- 2:44Speaker 5: show show with you. Thank you.
- 2:48Speaker 6: And also, Katie, let me just as it's a she
- 2:53Speaker 6: got it.
- 2:53Speaker 5: She took her a while, but she caught on.
- 2:55Speaker 6: Had We had a X back and forth about a
- 2:57Speaker 6: picture she posted on Instagram and I was like, congraduate. Yeah,
- 3:01Speaker 6: we won't get into it, but what I want to
- 3:05Speaker 6: know is loose bodies? Does that mean bone spurs? Does
- 3:07Speaker 6: I mean there's like little things floating around in there?
- 3:09Speaker 6: And did like something happen overnight when he got to Colorado.
- 3:12Speaker 6: He landed and he bumped his elbow and he's like, oh,
- 3:15Speaker 6: I can't pitch, Like where does this come from?
- 3:17Speaker 5: What does it mean?
- 3:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's interesting because the Dodgers are certainly trying
- 3:22Speaker 3: to find out. You know, Edwin Diaz pitched in the WBC.
- 3:24Speaker 3: He ramped up quickly. We talked to him. I talked
- 3:26Speaker 3: to him before the team went on the road about
- 3:29Speaker 3: just how was the ramp up period through spring training?
- 3:31Speaker 3: He said he had no issue, felt no problems. Sometimes
- 3:33Speaker 3: when you just throw hard, these things pop up. I
- 3:35Speaker 3: will say. When the Dodgers announced it was a loose body,
- 3:38Speaker 3: is that to me? Obviously? Me and surgery. So I
- 3:41Speaker 3: was like, well, in minutes, we're going to find out
- 3:42Speaker 3: that he's undergoing surgery. Because loose bodies don't just go away.
- 3:45Speaker 3: There's something that have to be removed. It's a queen
- 3:48Speaker 3: up procedure. Again. They're looking for maybe a turn in
- 3:51Speaker 3: the second half earlier, but it's going to be at
- 3:54Speaker 3: least two to three months, probably closer to three for
- 3:56Speaker 3: that timetable to return. And I think it just again.
- 3:59Speaker 3: The perplexity of this is that for so long the
- 4:02Speaker 3: team was like, Okay, he's saying that his knees is
- 4:05Speaker 3: bothering him, but not to the point where it needs imaging.
- 4:07Speaker 3: He's just a little tired, let's rust him. And then
- 4:09Speaker 3: all of a sudden, he comes out on Sunday. The
- 4:11Speaker 3: numbers don't look right, the pitches don't look right, the
- 4:13Speaker 3: below's down, and they say there has to be something else,
- 4:15Speaker 3: and Edwin says, it's my elbow. It's bothering me. So
- 4:18Speaker 3: they find the loose bodies. He's going to undergo surgery
- 4:21Speaker 3: tomorrow and the Dodgers will hope for speedy recovery and
- 4:24Speaker 3: that he's again ready post All Star break. But certainly
- 4:28Speaker 3: a big blow for this Dodgers team. We've talked a
- 4:30Speaker 3: lot about the depth that they've had in their system
- 4:33Speaker 3: throughout their roster. The one area where they don't seem
- 4:35Speaker 3: to have a lot is late end, back end of
- 4:38Speaker 3: the relief, and of course they go out and get
- 4:40Speaker 3: a closer for this reason. Now they're without him and
- 4:42Speaker 3: it's back to closer by committee for Dave Roberts.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Who do you think the next person up is going
- 4:47Speaker 4: to be for Dave Roberts Because Tayner Scott had success,
- 4:51Speaker 4: has had success this year, but in that closure role
- 4:55Speaker 4: in LA he didn't have success. So is it going
- 4:58Speaker 4: to be by committee where Okay, this is the best
- 5:01Speaker 4: spot for you in a ninth or is Dave Roberts
- 5:04Speaker 4: more of a manager that's gonna say, Okay, this is
- 5:07Speaker 4: gonna be my closer because Blake trying into the best
- 5:10Speaker 4: or VESSI is the best in the ninth I don't
- 5:13Speaker 4: care what the matchup is.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Yeah, Dave Roberts talked about that yesterday. He said he's
- 5:17Speaker 3: not going to name a traditional closer. He will go
- 5:19Speaker 3: back to closer by committee, very similar to how he
- 5:22Speaker 3: managed most of twenty twenty five when Tanner Scott started
- 5:25Speaker 3: to struggle, and it's he called it a luxury and
- 5:28Speaker 3: it's true. Having Edwin Diaz allowed him to lock down
- 5:31Speaker 3: the ninth and work backwards in games, so he was
- 5:33Speaker 3: able to match up the leverage lanes with specific relievers.
- 5:36Speaker 3: We've seen much better results from Tanner, Scott, and up
- 5:39Speaker 3: until Sunday, Blake Trinon as well. He got roughed up
- 5:42Speaker 3: really for the first time this season against Colorado, and
- 5:44Speaker 3: part of that one is the execution, of course from
- 5:47Speaker 3: these pitchers, but also because Dave Roberts has been able
- 5:49Speaker 3: to match up the leverage lanes based on what each
- 5:52Speaker 3: reliever's strength is. Because he knew in a safe situation
- 5:56Speaker 3: who his guy in the ninth would be, he no
- 5:57Speaker 3: longer has that luxury, which means he's going to have
- 6:00Speaker 3: have to pair the leverage based on game situation. And
- 6:02Speaker 3: you guys know how these games work. There's no way
- 6:04Speaker 3: to predict that your biggest spot in the game could
- 6:06Speaker 3: be in the seventh. Sometimes it could be in the eighth,
- 6:08Speaker 3: could be in the ninth. It could also be in
- 6:10Speaker 3: the sixth. So you have to kind of have a
- 6:12Speaker 3: flexible rotation with your high end leverage guys to be
- 6:15Speaker 3: able to match up with leverage. And I wonder if
- 6:18Speaker 3: that's going to impact the early success we saw with
- 6:20Speaker 3: Scott with trying and Alex Vessi has been a lights out.
- 6:23Speaker 3: You can make the argument their most reliable reliever so
- 6:26Speaker 3: far this season. But it definitely gets much more complex
- 6:29Speaker 3: in terms of game strategy because you're no longer working
- 6:32Speaker 3: backwards or able to work backwards from the ninth. You
- 6:34Speaker 3: have to patch the game together as you go. That's
- 6:36Speaker 3: going to significantly change how Dave Roberts and pitching coach
- 6:39Speaker 3: Mark Pryor navigate these games.
- 6:42Speaker 1: There are more than seventy thousand events listed on the
- 6:46Speaker 1: sea Geek app, So if you're looking to do basically
- 6:49Speaker 1: anything this spring or summer, there's one place to go.
- 6:51Speaker 6: No seekek has all the concerts, baseball games, World Cup tickets,
- 6:56Speaker 6: whatever you need is on cke. Trust me, I'm going
- 6:58Speaker 6: to be hitting some concerts festivals this summer. I'm gonna
- 7:02Speaker 6: be looking for see Geek.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I can't wait to see Aj adding the best tickets
- 7:06Speaker 1: he can for concerts and festivals.
- 7:09Speaker 2: We'll get plenty of pictures there.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But also when he's looking, what he does is he
- 7:12Speaker 1: looks for when he's going to say an arena for
- 7:14Speaker 1: a concert, a green dot meaning he's got a good
- 7:17Speaker 1: deal in a good spot.
- 7:18Speaker 2: That's where Seakeek helps you out.
- 7:19Speaker 1: With over thirty five million download Seekeek is the number
- 7:23Speaker 1: one rated ticketing app. And of course we have the
- 7:25Speaker 1: code for the FT network Territory ten for ten percent
- 7:29Speaker 1: off your next set of tickets at Sea Geek. That's
- 7:31Speaker 1: ten percent off any tickets with the promo code Territory
- 7:34Speaker 1: one zero. Make sure you click the link in the
- 7:36Speaker 1: description to download the app and have the code automatically
- 7:39Speaker 1: added to your account so you can use it later.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Props to see Geek.
- 7:44Speaker 4: All right, Well, during that time when Edwin was kind
- 7:46Speaker 4: of my knee, oh wait, no, it's my elbow, he
- 7:49Speaker 4: threw a bullpen and wasn't available the one day Tanner
- 7:52Speaker 4: Scott had to come in. No other team has that
- 7:55Speaker 4: luxury except for the Dodgers because they get an extra pitcher.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Seeing what Greg Craig Council said about the Otani rule
- 8:03Speaker 4: from the Dodgers doug out, we saw Dave Roberts' remarks
- 8:07Speaker 4: or or reply to Craig Council. Does it look like
- 8:11Speaker 4: it's fair for other teams or is it just a
- 8:14Speaker 4: Otani rule that only the Dodgers will ever be able
- 8:18Speaker 4: to take?
- 8:20Speaker 5: Take? You know, get some advantage from.
- 8:24Speaker 3: You know, one, I was surprised that these comments were
- 8:26Speaker 3: coming out. Now, this rule has been in place for
- 8:27Speaker 3: multiple seasons now, So when I first saw the headline,
- 8:30Speaker 3: I thought this was kind of like regurgitated, brought back
- 8:33Speaker 3: up from seasons prior. And then I saw it was
- 8:35Speaker 3: very relevant, and I said, oh, okay, that's a little strange.
- 8:38Speaker 3: And I think the Dodgers are kind of under scrutiny
- 8:40Speaker 3: regardless no matter what they do because of the team
- 8:43Speaker 3: that they are. They're spending habits, you know, they just
- 8:45Speaker 3: keep winning. But if you're looking at the Otani rule
- 8:48Speaker 3: in general, and if it's fair, you have one player
- 8:51Speaker 3: doing something in baseball that nobody else can, so making
- 8:55Speaker 3: a rule for that, I don't really get the issue.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I mean I don't really from we're really thinking about it.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I don't understand the problem. And having this extra rule
- 9:03Speaker 3: that seems to only benefit the Dodgers, I think that's
- 9:06Speaker 3: the wrong phrasing. I think this team or this rule
- 9:08Speaker 3: benefits whatever team has show heeo Tani. So the fact
- 9:12Speaker 3: that this is coming out when this rule has been
- 9:13Speaker 3: in place again for multiple years, I don't quite understand. Certainly,
- 9:16Speaker 3: everyone's entitled to their opinion. But to me, I mean,
- 9:19Speaker 3: this is a guy who's taking the mound once every
- 9:22Speaker 3: seven days based on the schedule that they have for him.
- 9:25Speaker 3: But he's still hitting in every other game. He's for
- 9:28Speaker 3: the first time in almost five years, he did not
- 9:30Speaker 3: d h on one of his start days. Like, this
- 9:32Speaker 3: is a guy who's fully taking advantage of the two
- 9:34Speaker 3: way responsibilities that he signed up to play. So I
- 9:37Speaker 3: don't really see the issue with the with the rule.
- 9:39Speaker 3: I'm just surprised more unless the timing coming out of it.
- 9:43Speaker 6: Yeah, but he couldn't pitch every I'm not going to
- 9:45Speaker 6: get into he couldn't pitch every seven days if they
- 9:47Speaker 6: didn't have an extra.
- 9:48Speaker 5: Anyways, we're going to do a whole segment on total
- 9:55Speaker 5: Homer though we already knew this.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Though it's amazing, where's Jordan Walker?
- 10:04Speaker 3: Time only been a Jordan Blaloker enthusiast and you guys
- 10:09Speaker 3: know this. And if it meant me leaving Saint Louis
- 10:12Speaker 3: to see some success, I'll take that anytime. This team
- 10:14Speaker 3: is doing just fine without me. Maybe I'm the problem.
- 10:17Speaker 5: Leave him alone, Leave them alone, Katie.
- 10:19Speaker 6: But anyway, Homer continue, you mentioned that only pitches once
- 10:23Speaker 6: every seven days. How long is Rokiye Suzaki going to
- 10:25Speaker 6: get to pitch once every seventh day? With the way
- 10:27Speaker 6: he's pitching, is there a chance we see him back
- 10:30Speaker 6: in the bullpen or are they just going to continue
- 10:32Speaker 6: with this experiment forever?
- 10:35Speaker 3: You know, then we're not going to see roky Sasaki
- 10:36Speaker 3: in the bullpen anytime soon. General manager Brandon Gomes just
- 10:39Speaker 3: asked if that was a possibility with Diaz being out,
- 10:41Speaker 3: and he gave a very clear, succinct answer, a one
- 10:44Speaker 3: word no. And the Dodgers have been very adamant about
- 10:47Speaker 3: their plans for roki You think about his age and
- 10:50Speaker 3: his talent. He's twenty three, twenty four years old, has
- 10:53Speaker 3: such a high ceiling, such a pedigree coming over from Japan,
- 10:56Speaker 3: and I know the numbers don't back it up. I
- 10:57Speaker 3: know he is. The performance has not been good. He
- 10:59Speaker 3: has throwing enough strikes. The command that continues to be
- 11:01Speaker 3: an issue, and he's not getting worse in games, but
- 11:05Speaker 3: he's also not getting better. He's kind of stagnated, and
- 11:07Speaker 3: that's not what you want to see either. Still, the
- 11:10Speaker 3: Dodgers do have a luxury based on their starting arms
- 11:12Speaker 3: in the rotation to be able to run Sasaki out,
- 11:15Speaker 3: And when you think about the long term goal, why
- 11:18Speaker 3: would you limit someone who was in his early twenties
- 11:21Speaker 3: with a high potential to the bullpen when you have
- 11:23Speaker 3: the luxury the availability to run him out still once
- 11:27Speaker 3: a week and build him up to see what he
- 11:29Speaker 3: could be as a starter. The Dodgers aren't necessarily struggling
- 11:34Speaker 3: to win games. They're fifteen and six, so they have
- 11:38Speaker 3: the ability to go out and say, okay, we need
- 11:40Speaker 3: to do once a week, be able to see what
- 11:42Speaker 3: we have out of him. Can he build forward, can
- 11:44Speaker 3: he find some progress? There's no need to put in
- 11:46Speaker 3: the bullpen. That's I think a very short sighted decision
- 11:48Speaker 3: for a team that obviously has long term aspirations of
- 11:52Speaker 3: continuing to be a dynasty in this sport. If it
- 11:54Speaker 3: gets to the time with Blake Snell, who is going
- 11:56Speaker 3: to start a rehassignment, maybe as early as tomorrow, based
- 11:58Speaker 3: on the weather, could be back by mid May, then
- 12:01Speaker 3: maybe you're having a different conversation. But the Dodgers have
- 12:04Speaker 3: not waivered, not once, on their belief in Roki Sasaki's
- 12:07Speaker 3: staying in the rotation. That is not going to change
- 12:09Speaker 3: unless he becomes unserviceable. That hasn't been the case. I'm
- 12:12Speaker 3: not saying it's been great, because it hasn't, but it
- 12:14Speaker 3: hasn't gotten to the point where you just can't throw
- 12:15Speaker 3: him out there once a week. The Dodgers still want
- 12:18Speaker 3: to see and give him as much leeway as possible
- 12:20Speaker 3: before they make that decision.
- 12:21Speaker 4: You know, the great place to learn how to pitch
- 12:23Speaker 4: and learn how to get a third pitch and learn
- 12:25Speaker 4: how to throw strikes Triple A. Do they send him
- 12:29Speaker 4: to triple A? Because your comment was all and Dave Roberts'
- 12:32Speaker 4: comment was the easy no answer was to the bullpen.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Do you see them moving him to triple A because
- 12:39Speaker 4: the fear of what that looks like for other Japanese
- 12:41Speaker 4: pitchers that come over to the Dodgers, or is that
- 12:44Speaker 4: also off the table?
- 12:47Speaker 3: That to me is a more fair question than the bullpen.
- 12:50Speaker 3: But I don't think they're there yet. One thing, Justin
- 12:52Speaker 3: Erbluski had another phenomenal start yesterday in course field, so
- 12:55Speaker 3: that definitely counts a little bit more. And he's kind
- 12:58Speaker 3: of forcing the Dodgers' hands on where his long term
- 13:01Speaker 3: role is gonna be. They believe he's going to be
- 13:03Speaker 3: a starter, but they've been using him as a hybrid
- 13:05Speaker 3: six man option, and if Justin Erbuski continues to post
- 13:08Speaker 3: like he has been, it certainly ups the ante on
- 13:10Speaker 3: Roki Sasaki. But again it comes down to the pedigree
- 13:13Speaker 3: and the high ceiling that they believe that Roki has.
- 13:16Speaker 3: So I don't think they're at the decision yet where
- 13:18Speaker 3: they are maybe contemplating a move to triple A. That
- 13:21Speaker 3: probably won't happen until again, Blake Snell becomes close to
- 13:24Speaker 3: being activated. But it will be a wait and see
- 13:27Speaker 3: process with that, because while the Dodgers have I think
- 13:31Speaker 3: probably the best starting pitching depth rivaling the Milwaukee Brewers
- 13:34Speaker 3: in the National League, they're not going to throw out
- 13:36Speaker 3: seven starters in their rotation. Something's got to go. The
- 13:39Speaker 3: easier thing to do would be to have Robuski kind
- 13:41Speaker 3: of revert back to that hybrid situation, but again, his
- 13:45Speaker 3: last two starts have been phenomenal. He's at fifteen Indians.
- 13:47Speaker 3: I think he's allowed maybe as an era under two
- 13:50Speaker 3: on the year. That's going to force the Dodgers hand
- 13:52Speaker 3: to make a decision. But they're not there yet.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Guys.
- 13:54Speaker 3: They're gonna have multiple weeks before Blake Snell is ready
- 13:56Speaker 3: so they're going to write it out until they have
- 13:57Speaker 3: to make that decision.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Like the Dodgers, And I know you haven't followed them
- 14:02Speaker 4: for years, but do you feel like they make decisions
- 14:04Speaker 4: on pitching specifically with like Robleski eventually when they have
- 14:08Speaker 4: to make that decision to move him to the bullpen
- 14:11Speaker 4: or leave him in a rotation. The fact that he
- 14:13Speaker 4: doesn't strike out enough guys. Do the Dodgers only look
- 14:17Speaker 4: at the result of wins, but he's got nine strikeouts
- 14:20Speaker 4: in twenty four innings. Is that a product of Robleski
- 14:24Speaker 4: being a different type of pitcher or does he need
- 14:26Speaker 4: to morph into this Tyler Glass now ten strikeouts a
- 14:30Speaker 4: game type of pitcher and not go seven or eight innings.
- 14:35Speaker 3: That's such a great point, and I'm glad you brought
- 14:37Speaker 3: that up, because Justin Robleski, when you look at the
- 14:39Speaker 3: rest of the Dodgers rotation, doesn't have the swing and
- 14:41Speaker 3: miss or strikeout stuff. But that doesn't mean that he's
- 14:43Speaker 3: not in the zone. Justin Erbuski is relentless in the
- 14:46Speaker 3: strike zone, and that's maybe why you're not seeing a
- 14:49Speaker 3: lot of strikeouts, because he challenges pictures or challenges hitters
- 14:52Speaker 3: excuse me with the first, second, third pitches of an
- 14:54Speaker 3: a VT where he's not necessarily working to a strikeout count.
- 14:56Speaker 3: He said, I'm going to hammer as many strikes as
- 14:58Speaker 3: possible in the zone to you, and you're gonna put
- 15:00Speaker 3: something in play, and the defense behind me, which again
- 15:03Speaker 3: is one of the best in the National League, is
- 15:04Speaker 3: going to get the out. So it's a different way
- 15:07Speaker 3: of pitching. It doesn't mean it's any less efficient. It
- 15:10Speaker 3: doesn't look like Yamamoto or a Tani or Glass now
- 15:13Speaker 3: coming out and just blowing doors pass guys, but he's
- 15:15Speaker 3: not any less aggressive. I think this method of pitching
- 15:18Speaker 3: works for Lbuski, especially as he continues to fine tune
- 15:21Speaker 3: his arsenal. He's been talking to Yama Moto about adding
- 15:23Speaker 3: a splitter. He did that a few times in his
- 15:26Speaker 3: start on Monday. So I wouldn't say that he's not
- 15:28Speaker 3: looking for more swing and miss. I think every pitcher
- 15:30Speaker 3: is looking for that as we see the game kind
- 15:32Speaker 3: of rely on that more and more. But he's found
- 15:34Speaker 3: a way to be He's found a way to be
- 15:37Speaker 3: effective based on what he's good at, which is just
- 15:40Speaker 3: having this relentless attitude and hammering the zone and opposing
- 15:43Speaker 3: hitters have not really been able to work significant a
- 15:45Speaker 3: bats against him, and it's worked in his favor. It's
- 15:47Speaker 3: allowed him to go deep in games again with the
- 15:49Speaker 3: bullpen kind of up in the air without Dias Right now,
- 15:52Speaker 3: Dave Roberts will certainly take any one of his starters
- 15:54Speaker 3: going seven to eight innings each time.
- 15:58Speaker 6: Who's the Dodgers' MVP offen right now? Is it Andy
- 16:02Speaker 6: pa Has or is it Max Munsey sneaky having a
- 16:07Speaker 6: big year so far?
- 16:09Speaker 3: Sneak, You're right, And we've talked so much about Andy
- 16:11Speaker 3: pa Has because he kind of started the season on fire.
- 16:14Speaker 3: He had the best average in baseball for the first
- 16:16Speaker 3: two three weeks of the season. And Max Munsey has
- 16:19Speaker 3: talked a lot about coming in past this offseason. He
- 16:21Speaker 3: cut out bread, which respect I could never and was
- 16:25Speaker 3: able to drop a significant amount of weight and just
- 16:27Speaker 3: get into shape. And he's talked a lot about since
- 16:29Speaker 3: his surgery and the injury that he had a few
- 16:31Speaker 3: seasons ago with that elbow, about how he didn't feel
- 16:33Speaker 3: comfortable with his swing, and the conversations we've had with
- 16:36Speaker 3: him so far this season. Post game, he said he
- 16:38Speaker 3: feels that he's in a much better place, and these
- 16:40Speaker 3: numbers are backing it up. He's already had two multi
- 16:43Speaker 3: homer games this season. And when you look at how
- 16:46Speaker 3: deep the Dodgers lineup is the fact that you have
- 16:48Speaker 3: Max Munsey in kind of the second half of that
- 16:50Speaker 3: lineup being able to produce like any other team's cleanup hitter. Yeah,
- 16:54Speaker 3: Los Angeles will certainly take that. And this is exciting
- 16:57Speaker 3: for Max Munsey, who works really hard to be a
- 16:59Speaker 3: staple in that Dodgers lineup. And I think he's kind
- 17:02Speaker 3: of underrated in terms of the game itself because of
- 17:04Speaker 3: his teammates and who he plays with. But when you're
- 17:07Speaker 3: looking at what munths he can do along with Andy
- 17:09Speaker 3: pa has and let's not forget about Dalton Rushing, who
- 17:12Speaker 3: has seemed to homer literally every time he's up, the
- 17:15Speaker 3: Dodgers have a lot of depth. It doesn't have to
- 17:17Speaker 3: be just Otani and Tucker and Freddie Freeman carrying the
- 17:19Speaker 3: load in the top half. They don't have Mookie Bets.
- 17:22Speaker 3: They haven't had him for a couple of weeks, and
- 17:24Speaker 3: the fact that they've been able to pick right up
- 17:26Speaker 3: whether offens is and you haven't really noticed Mookie's lack
- 17:30Speaker 3: of production because he hasn't been there. I think that
- 17:33Speaker 3: says everything you need to know about this Dodgers team.
- 17:35Speaker 3: They're deep, They've had some severe injuries, some big ones,
- 17:39Speaker 3: no Mookie Bets, no Edwin Diaz, and they've still been
- 17:41Speaker 3: able to be just fined. So a lot of that
- 17:44Speaker 3: is a testament to guys like Andy PA has Max
- 17:46Speaker 3: Menzi and Dalton rushing, hely.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Rushing, seven homers, twenty seven at bets.
- 17:50Speaker 6: Just definitely. And by the way, can we get somebody
- 17:52Speaker 6: on in front of Max? He's got eight homers and
- 17:54Speaker 6: nine RBIs Katie, can you tell somebody to get on
- 17:57Speaker 6: base for him?
- 18:00Speaker 3: I'll do that.
- 18:01Speaker 5: I got you perfect. Well, wait are you in San Francisco?
- 18:04Speaker 5: Are they playing in San Francisco?
- 18:06Speaker 3: I am in San Francisco.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Welcome home.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Wait one more on the way out.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I know this is after that series, but how do
- 18:15Speaker 1: you think the Dodger Stadium is.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Going to be for Pete crow Armstrong?
- 18:18Speaker 1: Do you think those seats as close as possible to
- 18:20Speaker 1: him are going to be pricey?
- 18:24Speaker 3: So I completely forgot about the PCA comments, and I
- 18:27Speaker 3: expect him to be received very loudly at Dodger Stadium
- 18:31Speaker 3: on Friday Dodger fans are a very passionate bunch. They
- 18:34Speaker 3: don't forget comments like that. So, uh, I I expect
- 18:37Speaker 3: I expect Pete crow Armstrong to know that he's in
- 18:40Speaker 3: Dodger Stadium first, first at.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Bat, his second at bat, his second at back.
- 18:45Speaker 5: I don't show up for the first at bat.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Oh what crat?
- 18:50Speaker 1: Now we're not gonna be able to do a show
- 18:51Speaker 1: from there because they're gonna it's gonna be the same
- 18:53Speaker 1: problem here.
- 18:53Speaker 2: I was just trying to that's what question.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Said.
- 18:58Speaker 6: I know, I know, Katie. What picture did you take
- 19:00Speaker 6: down behind you so you could come on today?
- 19:03Speaker 3: My grandmother had this like gigantic scroll, but I was like, wait,
- 19:08Speaker 3: this has to go sole me take it.
- 19:11Speaker 5: Shout out woo Grandma.
- 19:14Speaker 3: That's right.
- 19:16Speaker 5: The scroll, the scroll of the scroll, the scroll of.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Do Katie, You're great, enjoy it out there. Thank you
- 19:22Speaker 2: so much.
- 19:24Speaker 3: You got it, guys. I'll talk to you soon. Bye,
- 19:25Speaker 3: AJ talk soon.
- 19:27Speaker 5: Congrats, Katie.

- 20:41Speaker 2: This is truly the definition of the hot corner. Segment.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Craig Council does not give much to the media. He's
- 20:48Speaker 1: pretty low key, but he was bringing it and the
- 20:53Speaker 1: Cubs and Dodgers are about to meet up this weekend.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Craig Counsel is not a fan of the Otani rule.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Hold the Athletic on Monday. I've never understood it. It's
- 21:02Speaker 1: an offensive rule. Essentially, it's a rule to help offense
- 21:05Speaker 1: more than anything, if you ask me. And then there's
- 21:07Speaker 1: one team that's allowed to carry basically one of both,
- 21:09Speaker 1: and he gets special consideration, which is probably the most
- 21:13Speaker 1: bizarre rule for one team. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts bit
- 21:18Speaker 1: back quote. The thing is, it certainly benefits us because
- 21:21Speaker 1: we have the player. We're more than willing for other
- 21:23Speaker 1: teams to go out and find a player who can
- 21:25Speaker 1: do both.
- 21:26Speaker 2: He's an exception because he's an exceptional player. It is
- 21:29Speaker 2: what it is.
- 21:30Speaker 6: Pick a side, Okay, sho he Atani is probably the
- 21:34Speaker 6: best baseball player we've ever seen pitching and hitting combo.
- 21:38Speaker 5: Best player ever, best player ever.
- 21:40Speaker 6: I don't know that there's many people that can argue that.
- 21:43Speaker 6: As far as being able to pitch, throw one hundred hit,
- 21:46Speaker 6: hit fifty homers, steal fifty bases in one yard.
- 21:48Speaker 5: All that comebine.
- 21:50Speaker 6: There's one of those guys in the history of baseball. Okay,
- 21:55Speaker 6: Craig Council's point, I have one. See why because it
- 22:00Speaker 6: gives them an extra pitcher, and there are rules that
- 22:02Speaker 6: say you only get thirteen pitchers. They get a fourteenth pitcher.
- 22:07Speaker 6: This allows them to give guys extra day's rest, manipulate
- 22:11Speaker 6: the roster a little bit differently because technically, even though
- 22:14Speaker 6: they only have twenty six players, they have an extra
- 22:17Speaker 6: pitcher and they're able to use an extra pitcher. There's
- 22:21Speaker 6: no way to fix this unless you say, shohe has
- 22:25Speaker 6: to count as a pitcher, and then you can add
- 22:28Speaker 6: an extra position player, which nobody even cares about. If
- 22:32Speaker 6: you have to add an extra position player, nobody cares.
- 22:34Speaker 6: It's the picture because every team is mandated you have
- 22:37Speaker 6: to have thirteen pitchers because othero's teams that would love
- 22:40Speaker 6: that fourteen fifteen pitchers, I promise you if they could.
- 22:44Speaker 6: But the Dodgers are the only one that can do this.
- 22:46Speaker 6: And as far as Dave Roberts point, and we love you, Doc,
- 22:49Speaker 6: there's one guy that can do this.
- 22:51Speaker 5: There's been guys that have tried it. But now to get.
- 22:53Speaker 6: To the threshold to be able to use the rule,
- 22:55Speaker 6: you basically have to burn a year as a team
- 22:59Speaker 6: of a guy to get to that point. And there's
- 23:01Speaker 6: not many of these guys out there. I mean, the
- 23:04Speaker 6: guy for the Rays, try to Brandon.
- 23:06Speaker 2: McKay, Brendan McKay, McKay, he tried it.
- 23:10Speaker 6: Brooks Keishnik back in the day was a guy who
- 23:12Speaker 6: would have done it, but he was more of a reliever.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Loreentzen did.
- 23:15Speaker 5: Lorenzon did a little, but the problem is these guys
- 23:17Speaker 5: don't hit well enough.
- 23:19Speaker 6: Or pitch well enough to justify a team that is
- 23:23Speaker 6: going to try and probably compete to basically have to
- 23:26Speaker 6: lose one or the other per year, and that's where
- 23:30Speaker 6: you get kind of stuck.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I liked when Lorenzen's agent was pushing that for him.
- 23:34Speaker 1: He was like, hey, you could let him hit the qualifier.
- 23:38Speaker 1: And just to add what that is to qualify as
- 23:40Speaker 1: a two way player, you must do the following either
- 23:43Speaker 1: the current season or any of the previous two seasons.
- 23:46Speaker 1: You need to pitch twenty MLB innings as a starter
- 23:48Speaker 1: or a reliever. And to me, that's a big difference too,
- 23:51Speaker 1: because if you're a starter, it's much easier to accomplish that,
- 23:54Speaker 1: And you must start twenty MLB games as a position
- 23:57Speaker 1: player or a DH with at leapt at least three
- 24:00Speaker 1: he played appearances in those games. One other caveat because
- 24:04Speaker 1: this started in twenty twenty Kratz, it's this is not
- 24:08Speaker 1: a new rule. It's just getting a lot more attention.
- 24:11Speaker 1: It was twenty two when it started. Yes, okay, well
- 24:15Speaker 1: it started when Otani was with the Angels, like this
- 24:19Speaker 1: popped up. Okay, this rule has existed for many years.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Now he happens to be on a team that's very
- 24:25Speaker 1: good and gets a lot more attention. Nobody cared about
- 24:28Speaker 1: the rule initially when it was coming out, or at
- 24:29Speaker 1: least there wasn't as much buzz. The one other thing
- 24:32Speaker 1: you can make a complaint out is that in twenty
- 24:34Speaker 1: twenty four, MLB said, wait, hold on, we're changing the
- 24:37Speaker 1: itinerary In the previous season is when you have to qualify.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Nope, no, now.
- 24:43Speaker 1: It's in the previous two seasons is when you have
- 24:45Speaker 1: to qualify. This was after a condition with his elbow surgery,
- 24:51Speaker 1: So you can certainly make a case that now you
- 24:54Speaker 1: are cherry picking the rule to one player at.
- 24:57Speaker 5: Cause who can qualify? Right? Trust me, teams have tried crush.
- 25:01Speaker 5: You know.
- 25:01Speaker 6: Those teams try this all the time. They want to
- 25:03Speaker 6: find these guys. They don't exist. Nolan mcclan couldn't hit
- 25:07Speaker 6: good enough. He's more valuable as a pitcher. There's one
- 25:10Speaker 6: of these guys any probably ever, I mean, Babe Ruth whatever,
- 25:14Speaker 6: Babe Ruth was not as good as show Tani at
- 25:17Speaker 6: both hitting and pitching.
- 25:18Speaker 5: I'm sorry. He was a better hitter. That's why he
- 25:20Speaker 5: became a hitter.
- 25:21Speaker 1: And if you want the league to start enforcing this,
- 25:23Speaker 1: try to find more two way players. Is this rule
- 25:26Speaker 1: going to create that? Or do you really need to
- 25:28Speaker 1: start this in a different way?
- 25:31Speaker 5: What do you mean, like like, hey.
- 25:33Speaker 1: We want to we want to try and create incentives
- 25:36Speaker 1: in advantage.
- 25:36Speaker 5: Actually discourage to discourage. It's so hard to get to
- 25:40Speaker 5: the thresholds.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Yeah, but if you have a player that actually is Otani,
- 25:45Speaker 1: you're gonna come up and you're gonna hit the thresholds
- 25:47Speaker 1: in the season, you know, and then you're good to go.
- 25:50Speaker 2: It's it doesn't take. But the first season you don't
- 25:52Speaker 2: get the extra you're not down a player.
- 25:55Speaker 5: You're down a pitcher. Well, because you're going down a pitcher.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Well, you're going with a six man rotation, so down the.
- 26:01Speaker 5: Pitch, you're down a pitcher. Because the Dodgers have fourteen.
- 26:06Speaker 1: You're down a pitcher compared to the Dodgers. You're not
- 26:07Speaker 1: down to pitcher compared to everyone else.
- 26:10Speaker 5: That's the point. That's why Craig Council was complaining. But
- 26:12Speaker 5: that's the whole point. That's the whole point to the complaint.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Yeah, But the point is then if okay, if the
- 26:16Speaker 1: next otany comes up on the Cubs after how long
- 26:19Speaker 1: does it take to qualify for that?
- 26:21Speaker 2: Not that long, right, But.
- 26:22Speaker 5: You got to have a team that's willing to let
- 26:24Speaker 5: a guy do it. And that's the problem.
- 26:25Speaker 6: Most teams that are gonna have this type of player
- 26:27Speaker 6: are trying to usually compete, and so they don't want
- 26:30Speaker 6: to use lose a roster spot.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Yeah, but if you have no time, you're gonna do
- 26:33Speaker 1: that anyway, So quickly he qualifies. How long does that take?
- 26:37Speaker 5: Yeah, you can't.
- 26:37Speaker 6: You can't do it in the middle of the year.
- 26:38Speaker 6: If someone qualifies, you automatically get an extra roster spot.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Yes, so at least not no, it says it says
- 26:45Speaker 4: the two previous seasons, so they won't qualify for the
- 26:47Speaker 4: next year.
- 26:48Speaker 5: Yeah, must see.
- 26:49Speaker 1: The following either the current season or any of the
- 26:51Speaker 1: prior to seasons.
- 26:52Speaker 2: So what happens is, let me just so.
- 26:54Speaker 6: The why wouldn't the team just designate a guy as
- 26:56Speaker 6: a pitcher hitter and then get them twenty innings like
- 27:00Speaker 6: boom bang pal in the first like month, and then
- 27:02Speaker 6: they get an extra pitcher.
- 27:03Speaker 2: That's what we talk.
- 27:04Speaker 5: No, No, that doesn't make sense.
- 27:06Speaker 4: He has to play in twenty games. He has to
- 27:08Speaker 4: be he has to play in twenty games where he
- 27:10Speaker 4: gets three at bats per game. So you're cooking, you're
- 27:13Speaker 4: cooking a month worth of games at your DH spot
- 27:17Speaker 4: to be able to get an extra pitcher.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Correct.
- 27:20Speaker 1: So that's why the Michael Lorenzen part was like, hey, dude,
- 27:23Speaker 1: if you're on a crappy team like this year with
- 27:26Speaker 1: the Rockies, why don't you just spend a month qualifying.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I mean, he hits the innings in five seconds, but
- 27:33Speaker 1: he'd have to play in twenty games, which you can
- 27:36Speaker 1: do in about a month and be a DH or
- 27:39Speaker 1: I guess an outfield.
- 27:40Speaker 5: Yeah, but there's other people they think can hit better.
- 27:42Speaker 5: That's the problem.
- 27:42Speaker 6: I understand, Like that's the problem. There's other guys that
- 27:45Speaker 6: can hit better than Michael Lorenzen.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Okay, but but like if the not worth it.
- 27:49Speaker 6: To them, you have to have a guy that's really
- 27:51Speaker 6: good at hitting and really good at pitching.
- 27:54Speaker 1: If you're like out of it, don't you think it
- 27:56Speaker 1: might be worth it to just kind of challenge the
- 27:57Speaker 1: rule And then at the trade deadline you're like, hey,
- 27:59Speaker 1: you can get Michael Lorenzen, and he automatically enables you
- 28:03Speaker 1: to because.
- 28:04Speaker 6: Teams don't want to just give up the season Scott okay,
- 28:08Speaker 6: or or.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Giving up the season before. I mean, we have the Rockies,
- 28:13Speaker 1: the teams that aren't good.
- 28:14Speaker 4: So the Rockies are going to go to Hunter Goodman
- 28:16Speaker 4: and be like, Hunter, I know you you usually d
- 28:18Speaker 4: H when you're not playing, when you're not catching, So
- 28:23Speaker 4: we're going to give those at bets to Michael Lorenz
- 28:25Speaker 4: and so that we can have another pitcher in our
- 28:27Speaker 4: bullpen that has a six E R because we don't
- 28:31Speaker 4: change anything up with our pitching. No, like, oh, hey, hey,
- 28:34Speaker 4: I know TJ. I know you've been doing really great
- 28:37Speaker 4: playing first, and you know you can d H sometimes too.
- 28:40Speaker 4: If Hunter plays first, but no, don't worry about it,
- 28:42Speaker 4: like it's not gonna happen.
- 28:44Speaker 5: They're not. They're not nearly as good. There's no pictures.
- 28:47Speaker 4: I saw Michael Lorenzen hit home runs in back to
- 28:49Speaker 4: back games against us when we when I played for
- 28:52Speaker 4: the Brewers and he was at the Reds, like we
- 28:54Speaker 4: were like, oh my gosh, how's this guy doing this.
- 28:56Speaker 4: I saw Madison Bumgardner hit plenty of home runs. Neither
- 29:00Speaker 4: of them are better hitters than whoever the heck else
- 29:04Speaker 4: you're gonna put out there at DH just to get
- 29:07Speaker 4: an extra This is Craig Council said this, and this
- 29:11Speaker 4: is how twenty nine other managers feel in the game.
- 29:15Speaker 4: He's the only one that had the guts to say it,
- 29:18Speaker 4: which I'm surprised because Craig rarely says anything but every
- 29:23Speaker 4: all twenty nine other managers think the same thing. But
- 29:26Speaker 4: you don't want to. You don't want to butt up
- 29:28Speaker 4: against old major League Baseball. They catered to this rule.
- 29:32Speaker 4: This is a catered to rule. And even in Dave
- 29:34Speaker 4: Roberts his answer to it, his rebuttal to it, he
- 29:39Speaker 4: agreed it's an advantage.
- 29:42Speaker 5: Here's the thing.
- 29:43Speaker 6: Position players are only allowed to pitch in certain situations
- 29:47Speaker 6: like up eight or down eight. Right, So you have
- 29:51Speaker 6: to designate this guy as a pitcher on your roster.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Okay, Okay, so you're saying, could a team try and
- 30:02Speaker 1: pull off enough position player innings or something to qualify.
- 30:06Speaker 5: You see what I'm saying. But this guy has to
- 30:08Speaker 5: be designated as a picture.
- 30:10Speaker 2: See that seems I mean, not worse. They're both difficult.
- 30:13Speaker 1: You need a real two way player, trust me, because
- 30:16Speaker 1: there are no are there any in the pipe real?
- 30:19Speaker 6: No, No, Hunter Green, No, couldn't hit Golan McLain, couldn't.
- 30:25Speaker 6: I love Jack Kaglione and Sean Michael. Youre, we all
- 30:28Speaker 6: know how we feel about you. But I watch every
- 30:31Speaker 6: Florida Gator baseball game and I've said this to Jack
- 30:34Speaker 6: to his face.
- 30:35Speaker 4: He ain't a picture. He ain't a picture just because
- 30:38Speaker 4: you throw hard. I said, I told Jack that to
- 30:42Speaker 4: his face.
- 30:42Speaker 5: We laughed. I think we laughed about it on this show.
- 30:44Speaker 5: Yes we did.
- 30:45Speaker 6: I was like, dude, thank god, you weren't a picture.
- 30:48Speaker 6: I watch your act.
- 30:49Speaker 5: As a picture.
- 30:49Speaker 1: This is the one part, like part of me is
- 30:51Speaker 1: like yeah, you know, because of his unique situation. The
- 30:54Speaker 1: other parts, like well, if we're saying, oh, get your
- 30:56Speaker 1: own show, that's not happening.
- 30:57Speaker 6: No, there's none. I think college there's some. But if
- 31:02Speaker 6: you're good enough to do both, they first of all,
- 31:05Speaker 6: they usually make you pick one because but also, there's
- 31:08Speaker 6: one guy that's been able to do this ever since
- 31:12Speaker 6: Baby Ruth.
- 31:12Speaker 5: Honestly since bath It's.
- 31:15Speaker 1: And Babe Ruth doesn't count. The game and the life
- 31:17Speaker 1: totally different. Right, It's not that it doesn't count, but
- 31:20Speaker 1: to do the comparison stupid. So okay, the conclusion.
- 31:23Speaker 5: Is Craig Counsels.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Yeah, they get an edge and everybody.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Next time Shotani's a free agent, someone should have offered
- 31:31Speaker 1: him a billion dollars because actually he would have made
- 31:32Speaker 1: it back for your endorsement deals.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Thanks everyone,
