- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory. Foul Territory Networks Cubs Podcast. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sadeve Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your
- 0:12Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic Patrick, I am
- 0:16Speaker 1: here in Saint Louis. It is Monday morning, waiting to
- 0:20Speaker 1: drive home. The Cubs did not have a good weekend
- 0:24Speaker 1: in Saint Louis, lost two of three. The offense showed
- 0:27Speaker 1: up for one of those three games. Otherwise it was
- 0:31Speaker 1: more of what we've seen for the last week week plus.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I'd say it has not been terrible offense before that,
- 0:41Speaker 1: but the last you know, outside of a couple outbursts
- 0:44Speaker 1: here and there Saturday, and I guess you could count
- 0:48Speaker 1: Wednesday that was six runs. Other than that, this offense
- 0:52Speaker 1: has just really been struggling lately. And it continues here
- 0:57Speaker 1: in Saint Louis. And and the Brewers aren't losing. They
- 1:02Speaker 1: have no desire to to even give the Cubs an
- 1:06Speaker 1: inch here.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Oh Soda, I'm so glad that you're making the time
- 1:11Speaker 2: to chat on this Monday morning. I know you want
- 1:14Speaker 2: to soak up every last second in Saint Louis. I
- 1:17Speaker 2: know it'd be hard to extract yourself from downtown Saint Louis,
- 1:21Speaker 2: But uh yeah, I'm curious to get your thoughts on
- 1:24Speaker 2: the weekend that was at Bush Stadium. It seemed very
- 1:27Speaker 2: sort of what this Cubs team has been like the
- 1:30Speaker 2: last couple of months. Of they avoid the sweep, they
- 1:33Speaker 2: have one game that kind of gets everyone off their backs,
- 1:36Speaker 2: and then but it's that kind of coin flip game
- 1:39Speaker 2: on Sunday night that could have gone either way, and
- 1:42Speaker 2: now they're steering at a six game deficit in the division.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's kind of remarkable how baseball is. You know,
- 1:52Speaker 1: when you like really get into the nitty gritty of it,
- 1:55Speaker 1: it can be a really frustrating sport. The Cubs out
- 2:00Speaker 1: doubled the number of hits than the Cardinals on Sunday night.
- 2:05Speaker 1: They didn't walk anyone, They walked no Cardinals. The Cardinals
- 2:08Speaker 1: had four base runners. They just happened to hit a
- 2:13Speaker 1: home run with the man on base with you know,
- 2:15Speaker 1: one of those hits was followed by a home run,
- 2:19Speaker 1: and then another one of those hits happened to happen
- 2:23Speaker 1: with a man on base right after he steals a bag,
- 2:26Speaker 1: and that accounts for three runs. And it was more
- 2:28Speaker 1: than the Cubs got because they didn't come up with
- 2:30Speaker 1: a big hit. They didn't put much pressure on Sunny Gray,
- 2:33Speaker 1: but they didn't come up with a big hit either.
- 2:36Speaker 1: You can argue all you want about that stolen base
- 2:39Speaker 1: not stolen base in the ninth inning.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Look, I thought it was this.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I thought he was safe, but he was called out,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and the way replay works, he's not going to be there.
- 2:46Speaker 3: That's not an over, that's not a call that gets overturned.
- 2:49Speaker 1: It kind of looked like maybe his hand came off,
- 2:53Speaker 1: but then you could argue that he was pushed off
- 2:55Speaker 1: by the tag.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Whatever, it doesn't matter. He was called out.
- 2:59Speaker 1: He's out, and and that that probably led to the loss.
- 3:03Speaker 1: They put up a rally and couldn't get it done.
- 3:08Speaker 3: This is.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I think sometimes I think because of what the Brewers
- 3:13Speaker 1: are doing, this feels so much worse. This is really
- 3:18Speaker 1: not some dreadful stretch of play. They're just not winning enough.
- 3:22Speaker 1: They're kind of going along like they've been a little
- 3:27Speaker 1: bit above five hundred for two months now. They've played
- 3:31Speaker 1: dreadful baseball like each of the previous two years, and
- 3:36Speaker 1: that's cost them a playoff spot. They're still safely in
- 3:39Speaker 1: the playoffs. It's just really frustrating when the other team
- 3:43Speaker 1: is playing, you know, just an insane level of baseball.
- 3:47Speaker 1: You have to respect what the Brewers are doing. There's
- 3:50Speaker 1: no way you can argue that it's all luck and
- 3:55Speaker 1: that they're not a good team. They are a massively
- 4:00Speaker 1: run organization. They do a ton of little things that
- 4:04Speaker 1: are hard to quantify sometimes as well, and they do
- 4:08Speaker 1: things that are really easy to quantify right. They make
- 4:10Speaker 1: a ton of contact, they put the ball in play,
- 4:12Speaker 1: they run the base as well, they play sound defense,
- 4:15Speaker 1: they have a ton of speed, and then they just
- 4:19Speaker 1: seem to get bounces. And lately especially they've been getting
- 4:22Speaker 1: every bounce and that helps a ton. You could argue
- 4:25Speaker 1: that lately the Cubs maybe haven't been getting the bounces,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and then when that happens, it can it can have
- 4:31Speaker 1: a snowball effect. The Cubs also aren't just hitting enough.
- 4:35Speaker 1: They're not hitting the ball hard enough, they're not doing
- 4:37Speaker 1: the things that they were doing earlier in the season.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I do believe it'll turn. I think everybody in that
- 4:42Speaker 1: clubhouse does. This is not like last year where where
- 4:48Speaker 1: that offensive slump lasted for two months that led to
- 4:52Speaker 1: like fifteen games under five hundred at that point, a
- 4:56Speaker 1: lot of bad things were happening, right, So this is different.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I think that's what like people are like, this is
- 5:01Speaker 1: why does this happen every year? Why does this offense
- 5:04Speaker 1: just go? First of all, the offense has only been
- 5:06Speaker 1: really like struggling for ten days, not two months. It's
- 5:11Speaker 1: been up and down previous to that, and not the
- 5:15Speaker 1: powerhouse that it was in in April and May. But
- 5:21Speaker 1: I saw that I've been I said this last podcast
- 5:24Speaker 1: Patrick when I did the solo mail bag. But they
- 5:28Speaker 1: were I want to say June and July fifteenth and
- 5:31Speaker 1: eleventh in runs score. That's not terrible. They were like
- 5:34Speaker 1: twenty seventh and twenty eighth May in June last year.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So this is it's just a different stretch. I think
- 5:39Speaker 1: it completely. The negative feelings right now completely have to
- 5:43Speaker 1: do with the Brewers. They're just playing so well and
- 5:46Speaker 1: the fact that the team had a six and a
- 5:48Speaker 1: half game lead and now is down six. It feels unacceptable,
- 5:52Speaker 1: and look, they have to play better baseball. They can't
- 5:55Speaker 1: keep playing like this and then and then expected, you know,
- 5:58Speaker 1: win get into the playoffs and win in the playoffs.
- 6:03Speaker 1: But I think a lot of credit has to go
- 6:05Speaker 1: to the Brewers. It's just an insane run.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I believe.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I mean, the Cubs are six back in the division
- 6:12Speaker 2: now and the Brewers have lost only seven games since the.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Start of July, which is just.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Absurd. And I believe it was one of the embedded
- 6:23Speaker 2: tweets in one of your recent stories. I think Adam
- 6:26Speaker 2: Mcalvey used the Brewers devil magic phrasing on a tweet.
- 6:33Speaker 2: And it's just kind of a funny symmetry of just
- 6:38Speaker 2: a weekend at Bush Stadium. The Cardinals really in this
- 6:42Speaker 2: sort of retreat here, this like gap year succession plan unfolding,
- 6:48Speaker 2: you know, them being certainly not all in but not
- 6:52Speaker 2: totally out of the picture yet either, and that the
- 6:55Speaker 2: Brewers have come back have kind of reincarnated version of
- 7:00Speaker 2: some of the stuff that Cardinals used to do. That's
- 7:02Speaker 2: so frustrated, you know, Cubs fans and honestly the entire
- 7:05Speaker 2: Cubs organization, and you know, reading some Accouncil's quotes in
- 7:11Speaker 2: your stories, I just sort of laugh because I could
- 7:13Speaker 2: picture him, or I can hear him saying some of
- 7:17Speaker 2: these answers about the Brewers, and just like picturing the
- 7:20Speaker 2: face WinCE or kind of the purse lips and the
- 7:23Speaker 2: kind of lookaways like what is how is he sort
- 7:27Speaker 2: of processing his old team playing at this absurd level.
- 7:32Speaker 1: He doesn't seem as you know, like obviously he's not
- 7:36Speaker 1: reacting like the fans are. I think the fans are
- 7:39Speaker 1: kicking things and losing their minds if they're watching how
- 7:42Speaker 1: the Brewers are actually winning some of these games. It's
- 7:45Speaker 1: kind of remarkable. But you know, he's very matter of
- 7:49Speaker 1: fact about it. At first, I think I asked him,
- 7:53Speaker 1: I was like, do you we know you see the scores?
- 7:56Speaker 1: Because he's admitted that like he sees, he knows what's happening.
- 8:01Speaker 1: And I asked him, I was like, but do you
- 8:02Speaker 1: ever watch the way the Brewers win like that? Some
- 8:06Speaker 1: of these games are just like, it's amazing how how
- 8:10Speaker 1: some of these things happen. The sequence of events are
- 8:12Speaker 1: just crazy.
- 8:14Speaker 3: You know.
- 8:14Speaker 1: There's there's balls that hit the top of the fence
- 8:17Speaker 1: and then go out. There's like it should be an
- 8:21Speaker 1: inning ending ending grounder leads to runs or leads to
- 8:26Speaker 1: next pitch is a home run after an error, there
- 8:30Speaker 1: was literally uh William Cantouris lined out a pitch clock
- 8:35Speaker 1: violation was called the play was called dead, no, no
- 8:39Speaker 1: play next pitch home run to run Homer and like
- 8:43Speaker 1: this is.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Just like errors, mistakes.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Everything is happening in critical, huge moments, and you know,
- 8:49Speaker 1: I didn't explain all of this council, but I was like,
- 8:51Speaker 1: have you seen this that, Like, are you ever like,
- 8:53Speaker 1: come on, this has to slow down. They have to
- 8:55Speaker 1: stop playing like this. And it was he did not
- 9:00Speaker 1: He was not going to take that bait. He was
- 9:03Speaker 1: just like no, no, no, there was no He wasn't
- 9:08Speaker 1: like angry about it. It was just very matter of fact.
- 9:11Speaker 1: They're playing well, they're winning a lot of games. We
- 9:14Speaker 1: gotta worry about ourselves. We gotta hint, like we got
- 9:17Speaker 1: five games against them where we can control the outcome.
- 9:20Speaker 3: That's the only time I'm concerned about them. And you
- 9:24Speaker 3: know what, like I get it. We've talked a lot
- 9:26Speaker 3: about these things.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Why why aren't they screaming and yelling? Why aren't they
- 9:32Speaker 1: you know, things like that, Why aren't they showing passion
- 9:34Speaker 1: and emotion. I didn't talk to Danzy Swanson about it,
- 9:38Speaker 1: and I kind of, you know, he he was like, look,
- 9:42Speaker 1: you know there are moments where you see it. He's like,
- 9:45Speaker 1: I'm not sitting there watching every game. He's like, but yeah,
- 9:48Speaker 1: you see, you keep up on the highlights and you
- 9:50Speaker 1: know the news of what's going around the league. You
- 9:52Speaker 1: kind of have to see it. But then I said,
- 9:56Speaker 1: what about this five game set coming up? I know
- 9:58Speaker 1: you just got to take care of the card, but
- 10:00Speaker 1: what about that, Like, do you do you feel like
- 10:03Speaker 1: that's going to be like an elevated moment? You want
- 10:06Speaker 1: to get closer obviously by then, but does it feel bigger?
- 10:09Speaker 1: He's like, I maybe it can refocus us and maybe
- 10:12Speaker 1: it can be one of those things where you know, yeah,
- 10:15Speaker 1: the sense of urgency becomes a little higher because you
- 10:19Speaker 1: know this is the team you're chasing. I thought that
- 10:22Speaker 1: was the most you're going to get that. I mean,
- 10:25Speaker 1: you've been in a club out, you know how it is. Patrick,
- 10:27Speaker 1: You get it like these guys are not, like very rarely.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Are we going to get the wh when you.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Talking about stuff like that?
- 10:35Speaker 1: Yeah, you just don't you And I think that's probably
- 10:38Speaker 1: the right way to go about it, as boring as
- 10:40Speaker 1: it is. You know, I'd prefer that they say something
- 10:43Speaker 1: much more interesting, But that's just it's not going to happen.
- 10:47Speaker 1: There's no reason to go overboard with it, because if
- 10:49Speaker 1: you start thinking like that, then you do lose focus
- 10:52Speaker 1: on the task at hand, which is which you know,
- 10:55Speaker 1: when I was talking to these guys, was the Cardinals
- 10:57Speaker 1: or when whoever it was when I was talking to
- 11:00Speaker 1: council about it, I think they were playing the reds
- 11:02Speaker 1: of the time. So like these you know, you just
- 11:05Speaker 1: can't you can't expect much more from them, but I
- 11:10Speaker 1: I like it. Literally the m Calvey tweet, like even
- 11:13Speaker 1: the the the Brewers reporters are like, this is remarkable,
- 11:17Speaker 1: Like every single thing is going their way.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Again, you you make your breaks. You you know, like.
- 11:23Speaker 1: They're putting the ball in play, they're hitting the ball hard,
- 11:26Speaker 1: they're finding gaps, they're they're they're forcing, they're putting pressure
- 11:29Speaker 1: on the other teams.
- 11:30Speaker 3: So more power to them.
- 11:31Speaker 1: They're they're like, I'm not I'm not going to take
- 11:33Speaker 1: credit away from them, because we've seen this over and
- 11:36Speaker 1: over with this team. Just a great organization and they're
- 11:39Speaker 1: on and remarkable. I'm impressed. Uh, they're the best team
- 11:44Speaker 1: in baseball, So you know, what are you supposed to
- 11:47Speaker 1: can't You don't luck into that.
- 11:51Speaker 2: It's funny because unless it's like a college Football Saturday
- 11:54Speaker 2: or an NFL Sunday. Those TVs in the clubhouse are
- 11:57Speaker 2: almost always tuned to MLB Network. It feels like, you know,
- 12:01Speaker 2: buy and large. I mean sometimes it'll be on a
- 12:04Speaker 2: little golf, a little golf. Yeah, but like those Brewers highlights,
- 12:08Speaker 2: you know, those are popping up. And even if players
- 12:11Speaker 2: try to you know, lower their time on social media,
- 12:16Speaker 2: it still pops up. I mean, this is still their livelihood.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Like most of these players are interested in baseball, like
- 12:23Speaker 2: that's why they do it, like they're and then just
- 12:26Speaker 2: to have these connections here of Council, the recent history
- 12:30Speaker 2: between the Cubs and Brewers, it's just impossible to miss.
- 12:34Speaker 2: And then that's one of you know, Council's other go
- 12:37Speaker 2: to quotes, right, Like the scores are up in huge
- 12:40Speaker 2: numbers on the boards all over the stadium, every stadium
- 12:43Speaker 2: you go to, Like it's just impossible, uh to miss here.
- 12:47Speaker 2: But I'm I'm with you, they're not. You know, they've
- 12:50Speaker 2: got a lot i mean ahead of them before that
- 12:54Speaker 2: Brewers showdown and the Blue Jays are not easy going
- 12:59Speaker 2: to be an easy task at all, and that ultimately
- 13:04Speaker 2: this is going to come down to their best players
- 13:07Speaker 2: being their best players.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Yeah, then they need guys.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, they need guys to turn Uh, there's there's
- 13:13Speaker 1: one player who's obviously hitting the crap out of the
- 13:17Speaker 1: ball right now, Let's let's come back. Let's take a
- 13:19Speaker 1: break and talk a little bit about Matt Shaw when
- 13:21Speaker 1: we come back. The dog days of summer means it's

- 14:23Speaker 3: Patrick Matt Shaw hit.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I believe it was a solo homer on Saturday, and
- 14:29Speaker 1: then he accounted for their only runs on Sunday. He
- 14:33Speaker 1: did come up, you know, made the final out of
- 14:36Speaker 1: the game, came up in a big situation and couldn't
- 14:38Speaker 1: get that hit. But he's been their best hitter since
- 14:42Speaker 1: All Star Break. He's been and it's not just the Cubs.
- 14:45Speaker 1: He's been one of the best hitters in baseball by
- 14:49Speaker 1: way to runs great A plus since All Star Break
- 14:52Speaker 1: minimum fifty played appearances. There are five players better than
- 14:56Speaker 1: him in baseball. He has seven home runs since the break.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Only six players have more. Just you know, like he's
- 15:07Speaker 1: it's impressive. To see this type of turnaround when a
- 15:10Speaker 1: guy was I think pre break, I think we like
- 15:15Speaker 1: I think I wrote something about it, how like how
- 15:18Speaker 1: rough probably just like a graph or something in a
- 15:20Speaker 1: in a bigger picture thing.
- 15:22Speaker 3: But he it was bad. It was like he was
- 15:25Speaker 3: on it.
- 15:25Speaker 1: He got hot after he got called up, and then
- 15:27Speaker 1: it was like a month and a half of like
- 15:29Speaker 1: a five way to runs credit plus like just the
- 15:32Speaker 1: type of thing that's like, that's not playable. I don't
- 15:34Speaker 1: care how good your defense is, you got to start
- 15:36Speaker 1: talking about and they did. They sat him for the
- 15:39Speaker 1: three days before the break. I think he came in
- 15:43Speaker 1: as a defensive replacement in one of those games against
- 15:45Speaker 1: the Yankees. But I think it's I think he deserves
- 15:50Speaker 1: some credit here and maybe maybe once again this is
- 15:53Speaker 1: like an organizational kudos because they did it last year
- 15:58Speaker 1: with Miguel Maya, they last year with PCA. You got
- 16:03Speaker 1: to give them a little props here, Like, what's it.
- 16:05Speaker 1: They're they're at least giving them a good environment to
- 16:09Speaker 1: be able to make these turnarounds.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Jed Hoyer and Carter Hawkins are understandably
- 16:16Speaker 2: taking a lot of heat for how this trade deadline
- 16:19Speaker 2: went down, And this doesn't excuse everything that did or
- 16:23Speaker 2: did not happen, But you know, I thought of it
- 16:27Speaker 2: last night, you know, watching that Shaw home run. How
- 16:31Speaker 2: jed in justifying holding on to all those prospects and
- 16:34Speaker 2: that the lines of players cross a lot faster than
- 16:38Speaker 2: you think, like that is his experience, and that maybe
- 16:42Speaker 2: there is something to all these upper level hitting prospects
- 16:46Speaker 2: that they clung to so tightly. And obviously it's a
- 16:50Speaker 2: small sample size, only ten games, but have you seen
- 16:53Speaker 2: Euhano Suarez's numbers with Seattle.
- 16:56Speaker 3: There, I don't think they're good.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean I'm not in advanced to ask
- 17:02Speaker 2: his ops plus is two.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Oh geez, I didn't realize that. I mean, he's.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Hitting one oh five with a three point fifty seven
- 17:12Speaker 2: OPS one home run in forty one played appearances.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Just not good.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Now, obviously that that could change, but I think that
- 17:22Speaker 2: was part of their their fear. Right, if this guy's
- 17:24Speaker 2: been on such a heater for so long, he's bound
- 17:28Speaker 2: to regress. And if you only have that two month runway,
- 17:32Speaker 2: it can be hard to sort.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Of recoup your investment there.
- 17:36Speaker 2: And that Shaw has certainly played at a level that
- 17:39Speaker 2: has more than justified their faith in him thus far.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I chatted with him before Sunday's game, and I
- 17:46Speaker 1: think he'd mentioned like the reset, the mental reset already
- 17:51Speaker 1: and how he went up to his lake house, his
- 17:54Speaker 1: family's lake house in upstate New York.
- 17:57Speaker 3: That part is in a new story.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I think what stood out to me is like he started,
- 18:01Speaker 1: he started saying, like, you get to the big leagues
- 18:03Speaker 1: and you start thinking about like, oh, I can get
- 18:05Speaker 1: this contract, I can do this, I can do that.
- 18:08Speaker 1: And he's like, that's not why I love this game.
- 18:11Speaker 1: That's not my real motivation. Like why am I thinking
- 18:13Speaker 1: about these things? And he and he stopped, and he
- 18:17Speaker 1: like stopped himself and reset himself and realized, like, ay,
- 18:21Speaker 1: even if I fail, even if I'm not doing well
- 18:24Speaker 1: in baseball, I have this. And he was at his
- 18:26Speaker 1: lake house with his wife and his dog, like hanging
- 18:29Speaker 1: out on the boat. Like he's like, I have things
- 18:31Speaker 1: that I love and that make me happy. I don't
- 18:35Speaker 1: need baseball success to be happy. I think that's good
- 18:39Speaker 1: perspective for you know, athletes to have. You don't need
- 18:43Speaker 1: this to be happy, or hopefully you don't need that
- 18:46Speaker 1: to be happy, and you can find happiness elsewhere and
- 18:48Speaker 1: that frees you up from pressing. And I think he
- 18:51Speaker 1: needed that. He needed this mental reset, and there's also
- 18:55Speaker 1: physical things going on.
- 18:56Speaker 3: He's making changes to you know, his stance. Yet again.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Also kind of said like this guy said Tinkerer, like
- 19:05Speaker 1: he's like, I don't think that's going to stop.
- 19:07Speaker 3: I think Matt likes to like tweak things.
- 19:10Speaker 1: And if you look through you know, if you watch
- 19:12Speaker 1: them in college, watch them now, Cape Codley, all that stuff,
- 19:15Speaker 1: you see video of that. Yeah, this is a guy
- 19:18Speaker 1: that things evolve over time. He's constantly trying to find
- 19:23Speaker 1: the best version of himself. You know, I think sometimes
- 19:26Speaker 1: that can be difficult.
- 19:30Speaker 3: You know, we'll see how it plays out in the
- 19:32Speaker 3: long run.
- 19:32Speaker 1: If you find something that he maybe maybe there are
- 19:35Speaker 1: a few core principles that he'll stick to.
- 19:38Speaker 3: No this works at this time.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Maybe maybe he will slightly adjust as as his career
- 19:45Speaker 1: goes on and always be messing around. But I thought
- 19:48Speaker 1: that was an interesting thing from from counsel to say that.
- 19:51Speaker 1: But I appreciated the mental perspective and the idea that
- 19:57Speaker 1: you know, I don't need to thrive in baseball in
- 20:02Speaker 1: order to thrive in live.
- 20:04Speaker 5: Uh.
- 20:05Speaker 1: That there was a nice reality check that I guess
- 20:08Speaker 1: he got, and that's helped him, you know, kind of
- 20:10Speaker 1: free up and and I guess the final thing is, look,
- 20:13Speaker 1: he's pulling the ball. And then, uh, you don't want
- 20:17Speaker 1: to go up there trying to pull the ball any
- 20:20Speaker 1: pitch you gotta it's got to be the right pitches, right,
- 20:22Speaker 1: but slug there's you know, you pull the ball in
- 20:27Speaker 1: the air hard, you are going to be a productive player.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I mean, Eastapparatus has made a career out of it.
- 20:35Speaker 3: He has.
- 20:35Speaker 1: He's played like two of the three ballparks or I
- 20:37Speaker 1: guess like two of his three last ballparks at short
- 20:41Speaker 1: porches in left field. He knows that he's taking advantage
- 20:44Speaker 1: of that. He's got a great skill set. I saw
- 20:48Speaker 1: the stat earlier in the year between and we'll talk
- 20:50Speaker 1: a little bit about PCA and the guys that are struggling,
- 20:53Speaker 1: but uh, there there was this speedster that hits the
- 20:57Speaker 1: ball hard but doesn't pull the ball and PA and
- 21:01Speaker 1: they had the same exact like stat cast numbers. All
- 21:04Speaker 1: their numbers were the same, except PCA pulls the ball
- 21:07Speaker 1: hard and in the air, the other guy doesn't. The
- 21:09Speaker 1: other guy's like an average offensive player. PA's well above average,
- 21:16Speaker 1: and yes he's going through a slump right now.
- 21:18Speaker 3: But.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Just pulling the ball in the air changes the dynamic.
- 21:22Speaker 1: If you have that ability, you can do some special things.
- 21:26Speaker 1: It seems like Shaw's kind of figured that out, especially
- 21:28Speaker 1: as someone that we know can drive the ball the
- 21:30Speaker 1: other way. It's an hard some balls that I'm like, Damn,
- 21:34Speaker 1: I didn't know you could. You know he had that
- 21:36Speaker 1: type of pop to the opposite field, but it you know,
- 21:41Speaker 1: it's good to see him pulling the ball with authority.
- 21:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 21:45Speaker 2: I think one of the fun parts of our job
- 21:47Speaker 2: is just being able to have these ongoing conversations. And
- 21:50Speaker 2: you know, Matt Shaw is a good example of like
- 21:53Speaker 2: he was in sort of happy to be their mode
- 21:57Speaker 2: at the start of the season, that he's fighting for survival.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Then he has to kind of wear it as the
- 22:03Speaker 2: guy who gets sent back to Iowa and then it's like, okay,
- 22:11Speaker 2: it's like a home run out of the break. It's like, oh,
- 22:12Speaker 2: is match out back? And what does this mean for Suarez?
- 22:16Speaker 2: And I loved reading your story because he it was
- 22:21Speaker 2: similar to when I grabbed him on the south side
- 22:24Speaker 2: that getaway day. The end of the Crosstown Series, and
- 22:29Speaker 2: you know, ask a bunch of questions, you know, kind
- 22:32Speaker 2: of quickly, and I was just surprised at how quickly
- 22:34Speaker 2: he was talking. And just then we kind of turned
- 22:37Speaker 2: the recorder off and wound up talking another like I
- 22:39Speaker 2: don't know, ten to fifteen minutes just about stuff, and
- 22:43Speaker 2: you know how he felt like he had figured something out,
- 22:49Speaker 2: just in terms of like, Okay, this works for me,
- 22:52Speaker 2: Like he's like, actually, like he thought, the pitching is
- 22:55Speaker 2: not that much different, it's just kind of everything else.
- 22:58Speaker 3: There's just so much more.
- 23:00Speaker 2: And I think there are those moments and sometimes it's
- 23:05Speaker 2: away from the field almost you know in Upstate New York,
- 23:09Speaker 2: of just kind of getting away from it being able
- 23:12Speaker 2: to process it. And I think you got him at
- 23:13Speaker 2: the exact right time for him to articulate some of
- 23:18Speaker 2: this stuff that he's been feeling and processing and the
- 23:22Speaker 2: perspective that he's gotten. I thought it was just a
- 23:26Speaker 2: really honest interview. I would definitely recommend everyone to like
- 23:30Speaker 2: read it. And it's just this kind of incremental awareness
- 23:34Speaker 2: that you get. And then a player sometimes not even
- 23:37Speaker 2: what you ask, it's just when you ask them. And
- 23:39Speaker 2: then he was kind of ready. You know for that,
- 23:43Speaker 2: and yeah, it's crazy to think that, you know, a
- 23:46Speaker 2: kind of a nine hitter, sort of an afterthought is
- 23:50Speaker 2: carrying this offense, which is not at not a great
- 23:54Speaker 2: spot to be in when you're chasing the Brewers.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Yeah, let's talk more about the offense and maybe PCA
- 24:00Speaker 1: when we get back after the spree.
- 24:02Speaker 5: We have a little breaking news on HelloFresh. We've talked
- 24:05Speaker 5: about them for a long time, but this summer they
- 24:08Speaker 5: have their biggest menu upgrade yet. Ready for this, Todd Father,
- 24:11Speaker 5: talk to me. They have doubled their menu doubled. Now

- 24:24Speaker 6: That's incredible. But to start out, what they had before
- 24:27Speaker 6: was absolutely perfect. Now to add even more to your
- 24:30Speaker 6: go guys like me, I got baseball in the morning,
- 24:33Speaker 6: I got baseball afternoon all day every day. I need
- 24:36Speaker 6: something to get going, I need something to eat and
- 24:38Speaker 6: it's absolutely delicious.

- 25:04Speaker 3: Okay, Patrick, the offense is not playing well.
- 25:09Speaker 1: I think a lot of it is runners in scoring position,
- 25:11Speaker 1: but lately especially it's.
- 25:13Speaker 3: More than that.
- 25:14Speaker 1: They're just not They're not hitting the ball as hard
- 25:17Speaker 1: as they were, They're not getting as many hits. They're
- 25:20Speaker 1: just like too many guys are slumping at once. And
- 25:22Speaker 1: this was the type of thing that you really thought
- 25:25Speaker 1: wouldn't happen. But you know, it's been a couple of
- 25:29Speaker 1: weeks now of guys not not rarely locked in. I
- 25:34Speaker 1: thought Michael Bush maybe got locked back in on Saturday,
- 25:38Speaker 1: and then I.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Think he had an over on Sunday.
- 25:43Speaker 1: PCA was telling me yesterday that was Sunday. He thought,
- 25:49Speaker 1: I think he hit like this line drive against was
- 25:53Speaker 1: it McGreevy. I think on Saturday he hit this line
- 25:55Speaker 1: drive up the middle and it hit McGreevy and then
- 25:59Speaker 1: ended up being an app And he's like, he's like,
- 26:01Speaker 1: I thought, I thought that was it. I thought that
- 26:03Speaker 1: was the bath that I'm like, yeah, there it is.
- 26:05Speaker 1: I'm feeling it again, and he's like DK actually brought
- 26:11Speaker 1: it up. DK even said he's like, you know that's
- 26:14Speaker 1: ten feet either side and that's that's a hard hit
- 26:19Speaker 1: line drive single. Or he's like maybe it finds a
- 26:21Speaker 1: gap and it's a double because it's hit so hard.
- 26:25Speaker 1: So you know, he's like that these sometimes it's a
- 26:29Speaker 1: game of inches like that, but it's also a mental grind.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Like we talked about with sew it seems like PCA
- 26:35Speaker 1: is like trying to ground himself. When I talked to him,
- 26:37Speaker 1: he said, you know, he had to talk with Dancy
- 26:39Speaker 1: about like these results on the field aren't what make
- 26:43Speaker 1: you who you are and things like that, And I
- 26:46Speaker 1: think some of that is, like we see the emotions
- 26:49Speaker 1: with PCA. He's out there and he's feeling it every
- 26:52Speaker 1: every after every bat that it doesn't go his way.
- 26:56Speaker 1: But I will say that, you know, well he made
- 27:00Speaker 1: destroy a chair here and there. He's not he's not,
- 27:04Speaker 1: Oh you you were there, Patrick, Yeah, there was a
- 27:09Speaker 1: destroyed chair after in a bat in the final at
- 27:16Speaker 1: bat that he struck out I think against Baltimore he
- 27:19Speaker 1: wasn't he wasn't thrilled, and there was a broken chair
- 27:23Speaker 1: in it by his clubhouse. So he'll feel I mean that,
- 27:28Speaker 1: that's right after a tough at bat, right after right
- 27:33Speaker 1: after a tough loss, and he'll he'll feel those emotions.
- 27:36Speaker 1: But talking to him before the game, you could tell
- 27:39Speaker 1: that you know he's he's a freer person. You you
- 27:42Speaker 1: want that, you don't want those those that anger lingering.
- 27:45Speaker 1: But it eventually has got to turn into results, like
- 27:48Speaker 1: it has with Matt Shaw. It is not yet with
- 27:50Speaker 1: pc A. He's in a he's in a rough slump.
- 27:54Speaker 1: One thing I not is Patrick and I'm gonna write
- 27:56Speaker 1: about this for Tuesday. He's not chasing. Everyone wants to say,
- 28:01Speaker 1: like this guy chases too much and the league has
- 28:03Speaker 1: figured him out. He's chasing less than he was during
- 28:06Speaker 1: his hot streak, a lot less. Wow, he's organized the
- 28:10Speaker 1: strike zone. He's missing pitches right down the middle. There
- 28:14Speaker 1: was a three to zero count on Sunday and center
- 28:17Speaker 1: cut fastball and he missed it.
- 28:19Speaker 3: He grounded out.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I want to say that pitch that I was talking
- 28:22Speaker 1: that that game against Baltimore, that was a hit able
- 28:26Speaker 1: pitch that he struck out on to end the game
- 28:28Speaker 1: in a one run game. He's just not like this happens.
- 28:33Speaker 1: You got to hope that I think this is I
- 28:37Speaker 1: said this on the radio the other day.
- 28:38Speaker 3: I think.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Maybe he's just this type of player like we haven't seen,
- 28:43Speaker 1: we don't have a lot of history with him. He's
- 28:47Speaker 1: going to go through these stretches where he's just a
- 28:49Speaker 1: little bit off and he needs to get back locked
- 28:53Speaker 1: in and maybe we'll see another tourred stretch. And I
- 28:57Speaker 1: keep coming back to this quote that Jed said there
- 29:00Speaker 1: right when Jed talked no, no, no, it was it
- 29:03Speaker 1: was after the Soroka injury, but he basically said, like
- 29:07Speaker 1: these slumps like you don't know when they start, you
- 29:10Speaker 1: don't know when they end. And I think that's the
- 29:12Speaker 1: really frustrating part about this stuff is like you can
- 29:16Speaker 1: think you see a sign like Saturday for Michael Bush,
- 29:19Speaker 1: and there were no signs that he'd have a game
- 29:21Speaker 1: like Saturday, and then he had another over the next day.
- 29:25Speaker 1: It's like, Okay, was that the start of something or
- 29:27Speaker 1: was it not. It's very it's very hard to tell
- 29:30Speaker 1: sometimes when these things are going to start when they end.
- 29:33Speaker 1: So I think that's the most difficult part for us
- 29:36Speaker 1: to like deal with, especially for the fans, because when
- 29:40Speaker 1: you're in it, it feels like this is never ending.
- 29:44Speaker 2: So just to clarify, it was the chair at his
- 29:47Speaker 2: locker at Wrigley Field.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Yes, it yeah, it was.
- 29:52Speaker 1: I mean I think he just I don't want to
- 29:55Speaker 1: say destroyed is probably hyperbole.
- 29:58Speaker 3: It was broken.
- 29:59Speaker 1: It was broken, and he had a new chair at
- 30:01Speaker 1: his locker the next day. He had like the wheels
- 30:05Speaker 1: had been broken, and like it was not it was
- 30:08Speaker 1: not a functional chair anymore. I'm sure he we weren't
- 30:13Speaker 1: there to see what he did, but he wasn't thrilled
- 30:16Speaker 1: with the chair it was.
- 30:18Speaker 2: It's just interesting because like that's a pretty good distance
- 30:21Speaker 2: from the Wrigley dugout to the locker room and where
- 30:25Speaker 2: his chair would be. And I feel like normally it's
- 30:27Speaker 2: bat rack, maybe an occasional iPad or like a TV
- 30:33Speaker 2: kind of near the dugout area, just in general for
- 30:36Speaker 2: most players expressing their frustrations, that would be a good
- 30:40Speaker 2: walk for Pete to kind of keep carrying that. But
- 30:45Speaker 2: you know, you make a good point of like this
- 30:47Speaker 2: was one of the worst hitters in baseball last summer,
- 30:50Speaker 2: Like just in the majors, like least productive guys going,
- 30:57Speaker 2: and then he wasn't that good in April either, until
- 31:00Speaker 2: he turned it on and became this amazing all around
- 31:05Speaker 2: All Star player. And you know, listen to the broadcast
- 31:08Speaker 2: last night, it's like, oh, that's thirty stolen bases for
- 31:13Speaker 2: pe Crow Armstrong, and it's like, we're at that one
- 31:17Speaker 2: point of this season. I know, our buddy John Greenberg
- 31:19Speaker 2: likes making fun of the sort of arbitrary stats of
- 31:24Speaker 2: like oh, first player or you know, fourth youngest player
- 31:27Speaker 2: since you know, in franchise history to reach these stats.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Before the All Star breaking, it's been kind of quiet
- 31:36Speaker 2: on that front, and it hasn't felt like, oh, like
- 31:41Speaker 2: every game, we may have to write a peak Crow
- 31:43Speaker 2: Armstrong story, like he was on that sort of hobby
- 31:46Speaker 2: run in the twenty sixteen playoffs for a while, and
- 31:51Speaker 2: that's not realistic to sustain for one hundred and sixty
- 31:54Speaker 2: two games. But clearly, you know, Pete and Kyle Tucker
- 31:59Speaker 2: are the guys who are going to have to like
- 32:01Speaker 2: turn it back on here if the Cubs are going
- 32:03Speaker 2: to have a nice playoff run.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Yeah, Tucker, it's interesting. I don't know, you can point
- 32:12Speaker 1: to the finger if you want to, and wonder if
- 32:15Speaker 1: that's still bothering him. He didn't dismiss it. Counsel seems
- 32:19Speaker 1: to be adamantly against that that's the issue. Jed didn't
- 32:22Speaker 1: dismiss it. I think I think the fact that he
- 32:27Speaker 1: got hurt in June and had such a big June
- 32:30Speaker 1: gives me pause that it's.
- 32:31Speaker 3: The main issue.
- 32:33Speaker 1: I do wonder if maybe something changed with his swing
- 32:37Speaker 1: so he could kind of get.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Through the issue.
- 32:39Speaker 1: My guess is it's probably healed now and they're working
- 32:42Speaker 1: on mechanical things. Talking to DK hitting coach Justin Kelly,
- 32:47Speaker 1: he did say, like I pointed out, I was like, look,
- 32:49Speaker 1: he's hitting the ball hard again, Like there's some really
- 32:52Speaker 1: hard hit balls and they're just going for singles.
- 32:55Speaker 3: What is that?
- 32:56Speaker 1: Like, what are you seeing? And he said his bad
- 32:59Speaker 1: path is a little flatter than it normally is when
- 33:02Speaker 1: he's at his best, so that you know, maybe there
- 33:05Speaker 1: was some tweak there and he needs to just get
- 33:08Speaker 1: he he doesn't have like this huge uppercut swing, but
- 33:12Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's just slightly off. It sounds like
- 33:15Speaker 1: it I wouldn't worry about. I still say I'm not
- 33:18Speaker 1: worried about Kyle Tucker, because I think that he's about
- 33:20Speaker 1: to like he's going to go on a hot stretch.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I again, I don't know when it starts, but I
- 33:24Speaker 1: just don't believe he's gonna have three bad months or
- 33:28Speaker 1: average months in a row.
- 33:29Speaker 3: I'd be a little surprised by that.
- 33:32Speaker 1: If he does, I guess maybe that's not the best
- 33:34Speaker 1: platform year then and then and then suddenly the Cubs
- 33:37Speaker 1: are getting him for a lot cheaper in the season
- 33:41Speaker 1: of his.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Six months as a Cub. Three of that. Yeah, that
- 33:44Speaker 2: it's too early to put it in those terms, but yeah,
- 33:48Speaker 2: that would be quite the quite the feat if three
- 33:52Speaker 2: average to below average months of his six as a
- 33:54Speaker 2: Cub would Yeah, it could be occurrence, no doubt.
- 33:58Speaker 3: That would absolutely be a occurrence.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Okay, I mean, I think the bottom line is there's
- 34:02Speaker 1: multiple guys on this offense that need to get going.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Like I just said, like a Bush had that game,
- 34:09Speaker 1: Say I had that game whatever day that was Wednesday
- 34:13Speaker 1: and at Wrigley and he hasn't like and you thought like, oh,
- 34:18Speaker 1: he's gonna have a hot weekend in Saint Louis and
- 34:20Speaker 1: that didn't happen. So I don't know when it turns.
- 34:23Speaker 1: I don't know what's gonna happen. I do believe it
- 34:26Speaker 1: does turn. I also kind of believe that it may
- 34:30Speaker 1: be too late to catch the Brewers. I think this
- 34:34Speaker 1: is the type of stretch where that wins you a division.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I said this in the Mailbag episode, but like everyone's saying, like, oh,
- 34:43Speaker 1: they look at their record in the past two months,
- 34:46Speaker 1: it's barely about five hundred.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:49Speaker 1: I said this at the time when they were read hot,
- 34:51Speaker 1: like this is what you need to get into the playoffs.
- 34:53Speaker 3: You can.
- 34:54Speaker 1: It's the benefit of having two awesome months is you
- 34:58Speaker 1: can have a couple average months. Then what you don't
- 35:01Speaker 1: want is what happened last May and June. You can't
- 35:03Speaker 1: have awful months and then you have to play insane
- 35:07Speaker 1: for four months, so you have to You need these
- 35:10Speaker 1: types of I mean, you need the April and May
- 35:13Speaker 1: months to balance out what the inevitable rough patches that
- 35:17Speaker 1: every team goes through except the Brewers, apparently, although the
- 35:20Speaker 1: Brewers did go through it, they were twenty five and
- 35:24Speaker 1: twenty eight to start the season. They started on fourth,
- 35:26Speaker 1: they were twenty five and twenty eight, and they haven't
- 35:29Speaker 1: looked back since that twenty five and twenty eight. I
- 35:31Speaker 1: think after twenty five and twenty eight they won eight
- 35:33Speaker 1: games in a row. That's something they've done three times.
- 35:35Speaker 1: When at least eight games in a row, just you know,
- 35:39Speaker 1: just it goes to show like it's been a really
- 35:41Speaker 1: great run. But like I said, every team like this

- 35:52Speaker 1: would be enough to win the division, but another team

- 35:57Speaker 3: So props to them for being as good as they can.
- 36:01Speaker 1: But the bottom line is, you know, I agree with

- 36:13Speaker 3: Get in. If you somehow do catch the Brewers, more
- 36:16Speaker 3: power to you.
- 36:18Speaker 1: All right, Patrick, we'll be back with more episodes this week.
- 36:21Speaker 1: You are back from vacation. I will be in Toronto.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Thanks so much for listening everyone. This is Northside Territory.
