- 0:04Speaker 1: and two time People's Choice Award winning podcast.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Hello everybody, we are scrubbing in.
- 0:13Speaker 3: It's Tills and Yad and Katie Thurston in the pad.
- 0:18Speaker 4: Wow.
- 0:20Speaker 5: That's right.
- 0:22Speaker 6: We all know and love her as a bachelorette, but
- 0:24Speaker 6: she's here to discuss some much more important topics today.
- 0:27Speaker 3: We know and we love her from the Bachelor franchise,
- 0:30Speaker 3: but there is much more to get into with Katie Thurston.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yes, she recently got married.
- 0:35Speaker 6: She also recently was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she
- 0:40Speaker 6: has been so open and vulnerable on social media in
- 0:44Speaker 6: the podcast I've listened to, so I'm very excited to
- 0:48Speaker 6: talk to her.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Let's bring her in, Becca, Let's bring her in.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Everyone. Welcome Katie Thurston.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Wow.
- 0:55Speaker 2: In an introduction, Let's hello, Thank you so much for
- 0:59Speaker 2: being here.
- 1:00Speaker 5: Thanks for having me.
- 1:01Speaker 6: Guys, we this is our first time we met, which
- 1:03Speaker 6: is unheard of in the Bachelor world.
- 1:06Speaker 1: It's like we all know each other in this weird,
- 1:09Speaker 1: like subliminal messaging kind of way, you know, the first.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Time you have met.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like your trauma bonded through being on the show.
- 1:15Speaker 6: And it's just like an understanding that you know, when
- 1:18Speaker 6: you actually do meet, you get each other.
- 1:20Speaker 5: Yes, we're already like failing now.
- 1:23Speaker 2: It's like a sorority, Tony, You're not a part of it.
- 1:26Speaker 4: I know, No, I know, honestly. No.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Becka always says she's like, I wish that you had
- 1:32Speaker 3: just like one experience on the Bachelor because she thinks
- 1:34Speaker 3: I would have made like.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Good television, yeah, which is kind of rude.
- 1:38Speaker 6: No, no, no, not everyone that is good on TV.
- 1:42Speaker 2: It's a negative thing.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Yeah, it would have been miserable.
- 1:45Speaker 1: If you have great commentary, then like, yeah, that's amazing.
- 1:48Speaker 6: The only thing is she would have fallen too fast
- 1:50Speaker 6: and gotten like they would have been able to get
- 1:53Speaker 6: in her head very Yeah, he.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Has a really good connection with Katie. I would have
- 1:56Speaker 4: been like, you know, it's.
- 1:59Speaker 5: A great televison, right.
- 2:03Speaker 2: So there's been a lot going on in your life.
- 2:05Speaker 6: Yes, I'm like, I have so many areas that I
- 2:08Speaker 6: want to cover, but I kind of want to go
- 2:10Speaker 6: into you being a wife because I feel like we
- 2:13Speaker 6: have gotten to watch your love story, you know, from
- 2:16Speaker 6: being on the Bachelor, and.
- 2:18Speaker 2: What was your love life before you were on the show.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I mean I definitely was like actively a dater's.
- 2:24Speaker 5: How you word it, but like I was pursuing.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Love always and like long term serious Like I never
- 2:28Speaker 1: dated for fun. I always dated like with the hope
- 2:30Speaker 1: of like marriage or at least long term, you know.
- 2:33Speaker 1: And the older you get your you're like, I hope
- 2:35Speaker 1: this is the one, yeah, you know, and every time
- 2:37Speaker 1: you think it is, and then it's not, like.
- 2:38Speaker 5: Damn it, you know. Yeah.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And then for the Bachelor, it was like COVID. I
- 2:43Speaker 1: was twenty nine at the time, which is you know,
- 2:45Speaker 1: in reality TV world, is like you're about to age
- 2:47Speaker 1: out because like I should apply because I loved the
- 2:50Speaker 1: show and I was like this could be fun. And
- 2:52Speaker 1: then yeah, then as you know, your whole world changes
- 2:56Speaker 1: so fast.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Well, I remember when you were on the show.
- 3:00Speaker 6: Your intro is what like you're intro out of the
- 3:02Speaker 6: limo is what really got everyone's attention. I think like
- 3:05Speaker 6: knowing you had a following on TikTok and it was
- 3:08Speaker 6: very like sex positive and you were very open and
- 3:11Speaker 6: honest about that, which in my mind I think is
- 3:13Speaker 6: such a like not advantage in a way of like
- 3:18Speaker 6: negative but like you coming off the show, there wasn't
- 3:21Speaker 6: this overwhelming, like navigating the social media aspect of it,
- 3:25Speaker 6: which I think ever since that that has been introduced,
- 3:28Speaker 6: like there is that element of the show that people
- 3:30Speaker 6: have like a following.
- 3:31Speaker 2: But I had no idea what I was doing.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Sex positive mean, like.
- 3:34Speaker 1: You, I just say this is this is my opinion
- 3:38Speaker 1: of it. I don't I never ever use that term
- 3:40Speaker 1: sex pot like what is the I was just open
- 3:43Speaker 1: about sex, which is a very common thing for women
- 3:46Speaker 1: of our generation.
- 3:48Speaker 3: You know, but open about what like having it or
- 3:50Speaker 3: just talking about position, all of it.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Girl talk, you know, it's like the thing is you
- 3:55Speaker 1: would talk about with your friends. I talked about publicly
- 3:57Speaker 1: on TikTok, I guess. And then I came out of
- 3:59Speaker 1: the I went with a vibrator, and then this phrase,
- 4:03Speaker 1: you know, oh she's sex positive started coming out. I
- 4:05Speaker 1: was like, I mean, I don't know. I'm from Washington.
- 4:08Speaker 1: This didn't seem crazy, you know, it's a progressive state.
- 4:12Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 4:13Speaker 1: So I hate the phrase because I don't want to
- 4:15Speaker 1: give me some like metal of like, oh she's so
- 4:17Speaker 1: sex positive. I'm like, no, I just represent many many
- 4:20Speaker 1: women of our generation who are comfortable with their sexuality
- 4:23Speaker 1: and talking about sexual experiences and thoughts.
- 4:27Speaker 4: So right right.
- 4:28Speaker 6: Well, as someone who grew up in like purity culture
- 4:30Speaker 6: and stuff, I think of it as a like I
- 4:32Speaker 6: mean that as like a complimentary terms. Yeah, Like I
- 4:35Speaker 6: in my mind, I'm like seeing people being so comfortable
- 4:38Speaker 6: talking about it, especially the way I grew up where
- 4:40Speaker 6: it was like so much like you don't talk about
- 4:42Speaker 6: it was so refreshing, I think for people who you know,
- 4:46Speaker 6: grew up like me, but I would say that you're
- 4:48Speaker 6: also in that category too comfortable time. Well yeah, but
- 4:51Speaker 6: I'm saying comfortable talking about your you know.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I feel like I feel like there were things that
- 4:57Speaker 3: I had to like google that I feel like should
- 5:00Speaker 3: have just been like common knowledge.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Do you know what I mean?
- 5:03Speaker 5: Like like callous, I'm actually.
- 5:07Speaker 3: About sex, but like I didn't even realize that there
- 5:10Speaker 3: was like multiple holes, so.
- 5:12Speaker 4: I'm like, do you know what I mean?
- 5:13Speaker 3: Like I was just trying to learn how to use
- 5:14Speaker 3: a tampon, Like I'm having to like figure out like, oh,
- 5:17Speaker 3: the p hole is very small, so you actually can't
- 5:19Speaker 3: put your tampon?
- 5:21Speaker 5: Was like what if I put it on my peel?
- 5:24Speaker 3: And like I'm having to google these things that like
- 5:26Speaker 3: should have just been like taught to me or shown
- 5:28Speaker 3: to me, Like why are we not showing people how
- 5:30Speaker 3: to use like somebody DM me how to insert a
- 5:33Speaker 3: mental cop And I was like, I would literally show
- 5:35Speaker 3: you if Instagram wouldn't like deactivate my account, because like
- 5:39Speaker 3: I wish somebody would do that for me.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like sucks.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's what I'm saying.
- 5:45Speaker 6: It was like a she was you were very comfortable
- 5:48Speaker 6: doing that, and I think people gravitated towards you for
- 5:51Speaker 6: that reason. When you got the call to be the Bachelorette,
- 5:54Speaker 6: where were you and what what was that experience?
- 5:58Speaker 5: Like, I mean just COVID, so I think I was
- 5:59Speaker 5: probably at home home.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I was like I was shocked because, as
- 6:05Speaker 1: you know, it's usually like more of the front runners,
- 6:08Speaker 1: and I was like, in terms of ranking eleventh place,
- 6:11Speaker 1: so I thought maybe Bachelor in Paradise.
- 6:13Speaker 5: I was not really.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Thinking the Bachelorette, but of course I'm like, yes, like
- 6:18Speaker 1: help me in, so very excited. It was very weird
- 6:21Speaker 1: because I was like working at my job and they
- 6:23Speaker 1: tell you like very last minute, and so I kind
- 6:25Speaker 1: of gave like notice. I was like, but also they
- 6:28Speaker 1: might not pick me and I would still like to
- 6:29Speaker 1: work here. Yeah, yeah, But then I knew, Like once
- 6:31Speaker 1: I was hon I was like, I can't come back
- 6:33Speaker 1: to working at the bank. It doesn't even coming back
- 6:36Speaker 1: to the bank after being quote dildo girl on The
- 6:38Speaker 1: Bachelor was very.
- 6:39Speaker 5: Awkward for me.
- 6:41Speaker 1: So I knew slowly my life was about to shift
- 6:44Speaker 1: and do like a one to eighty.
- 6:45Speaker 6: Yeah, it's so funny you say that because I was
- 6:48Speaker 6: a virgin on my season and I wasn't. I intentionally
- 6:51Speaker 6: didn't tell them it just it came about in the show.
- 6:54Speaker 6: But when I went back to work now, it was
- 6:56Speaker 6: something that was very confident and proud in. But it
- 6:58Speaker 6: was so strange knowing the like strangers who came into
- 7:01Speaker 6: our office every day, like knew this about me.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It was like, oh yeah, yeah, intimate details. You don't
- 7:08Speaker 2: think about it though, because you're in a bubble. Yeah yeah.
- 7:11Speaker 6: So you get off the show those relationships, that relationship
- 7:14Speaker 6: did not work out, right, and now we're sitting here
- 7:17Speaker 6: and you're a married woman. And once an Tonia was like,
- 7:20Speaker 6: how did they meet? And I was like, I actually
- 7:21Speaker 6: don't know that I know the full story of how
- 7:23Speaker 6: y'all met.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Oh, it's so silly, because you know, once you do
- 7:26Speaker 1: this reality TV, you're like, I can be anything I want.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And so I wanted to be a comedian, and so
- 7:31Speaker 1: I started like following different comics to like clean up
- 7:34Speaker 1: my feed and just be like inspired, and Jeff was
- 7:36Speaker 1: one of them, and so I followed him.
- 7:38Speaker 5: He followed me.
- 7:39Speaker 1: He actually thought I was a makeup influencer, which is
- 7:41Speaker 1: crazy because I can't do that. And then one day
- 7:46Speaker 1: we were like exchanging dms and then literally that's kind
- 7:49Speaker 1: of like the shortest version is like we met in
- 7:51Speaker 1: the dms on Instagram, talked for a month because he
- 7:54Speaker 1: lived in New York I lived in LA and then
- 7:57Speaker 1: I think that was what actually helped build a really
- 8:00Speaker 1: great start, because we didn't connect on a physical level
- 8:03Speaker 1: or a drunk level or like an awkward, bad first date.
- 8:06Speaker 1: It was purely conversational, and because we had that first
- 8:10Speaker 1: month of just talking, when we finally had our first date,
- 8:13Speaker 1: it was like so good and I was like I
- 8:16Speaker 1: was shaking. I literally remember like like we went to
- 8:18Speaker 1: brunch for our date and I remember picking up the
- 8:21Speaker 1: champagne and I had to acknowledge it. I had to
- 8:23Speaker 1: be like, oh, I'm actually a little nervous around you.
- 8:26Speaker 5: I couldn't even drink. I'd to like set it back down.
- 8:28Speaker 2: But yeah, was it the first time you felt like
- 8:30Speaker 2: that on a date with the guys?
- 8:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm normally like way more confident than that, and
- 8:35Speaker 1: so the fact that I was all like bashful and
- 8:37Speaker 1: giddy around him and like like we just knew. Honestly
- 8:42Speaker 1: the first time we were texting, I joked but also
- 8:44Speaker 1: kind of was like, Oh, this is going to go somewhere,
- 8:46Speaker 1: because you can tell from a first conversation it's beyond
- 8:49Speaker 1: like what's your family history?
- 8:51Speaker 5: What are you going to call? It's like so much more.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I was like, we're gonna have to flip coins for
- 8:57Speaker 1: who us to move once we fall in love, because
- 8:59Speaker 1: I was like, this is gonna be something.
- 9:01Speaker 5: Little did I know it was a whole damn marriage,
- 9:03Speaker 5: But I know.
- 9:05Speaker 6: So when you so, I feel like when you were
- 9:10Speaker 6: when I was talking about your dating before the Bachelorette, Yeah,
- 9:13Speaker 6: you said you were like intentionally looking for that next step,
- 9:16Speaker 6: which was marriage, right, Yeah, and then you meet someone
- 9:19Speaker 6: and you're like, Okay, I think this is gonna be it.
- 9:22Speaker 6: Let's see where we're gonna move and next next thing,
- 9:24Speaker 6: you know, it's like moving so quickly.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Yeah, did it just feel like this is what's supposed
- 9:28Speaker 2: to happen.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it's funny because you know that phrase like when
- 9:31Speaker 1: you know you know, yeah, that's what this was, and
- 9:33Speaker 1: I and I never could relate to that, or I
- 9:36Speaker 1: thought I could, but then when this one hit, I
- 9:38Speaker 1: was like, oh, this is what that means. And so
- 9:42Speaker 1: like not once have I like looked back or like
- 9:44Speaker 1: we continued, like our love keeps like just growing and
- 9:47Speaker 1: obviously what was it we our first date was in May,
- 9:51Speaker 1: we got engaged in August, and then we got married
- 9:56Speaker 1: in I should know this actually February, so March my
- 10:01Speaker 1: research because it was an elopement and it was like
- 10:04Speaker 1: kind of it was like in our apartment. So it
- 10:06Speaker 1: doesn't feel like it feels like an actual marriage, but
- 10:09Speaker 1: we still want to plan a wedding, so the date
- 10:12Speaker 1: doesn't feel like the date the.
- 10:14Speaker 5: Date quite yeah, but we are legally on paper.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Married Tonya's dream.
- 10:19Speaker 6: What if that's if you could have gotten engaged married right, Yeah, yeah.
- 10:26Speaker 4: I guess that was kind of the same.
- 10:28Speaker 3: But I was the same in terms of like I
- 10:30Speaker 3: knew and oh yeah yeah, but my husband was like
- 10:34Speaker 3: I'm the Brakes girl.
- 10:35Speaker 4: I was like, okay, compromise. I guess it's something you
- 10:38Speaker 4: do in marriage.
- 10:40Speaker 6: So I want to go into your diagnosis because we
- 10:43Speaker 6: were just talking about how women's well, First of all,
- 10:48Speaker 6: can we talk go back to that moment when that
- 10:50Speaker 6: happened anything, And I want to talk about did you
- 10:54Speaker 6: do like a self breast exam, like what brought you
- 10:57Speaker 6: into the doctor to even get the diagnosis.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it was painful, like like I had no choice
- 11:02Speaker 1: but to notice it. But because it was painful, I
- 11:06Speaker 1: was like, oh, is it my period? You know it
- 11:09Speaker 1: was summer. It was last year actually that I first
- 11:11Speaker 1: felt it. That's how long I waited to get it
- 11:13Speaker 1: checked out. And so I started working out in the summer.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I'm like, maybe it's like a sort of muscle or something,
- 11:18Speaker 1: you know, or maybe it'll come and who knows.
- 11:19Speaker 4: And it just was always there, never went away.
- 11:21Speaker 5: It was always there.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Maybe maybe in the beginning it felt like it went away,
- 11:24Speaker 1: but then there was a certain point where it's like, oh,
- 11:26Speaker 1: I can't ignore this anymore. But I did have a
- 11:30Speaker 1: benign cyst in my early twenties, so it was like
- 11:32Speaker 1: a lump that was not cancerous and I kind of
- 11:35Speaker 1: and I had it removed, and so I kind of
- 11:36Speaker 1: thought it was going to be the same thing. It
- 11:38Speaker 1: was the same side. I was like, oh, maybe it's
- 11:40Speaker 1: just coming back. I'll have to do another lumpectomy. It's
- 11:42Speaker 1: like it's no, no rush, no urgency whatever. And then literally,
- 11:48Speaker 1: like it was right before I was leaving LA, I
- 11:49Speaker 1: was like, I should use up my insurance before you know,
- 11:52Speaker 1: changing states and whatnot, and do all these little checks.
- 11:55Speaker 5: And so I went in. I was like, hey, this lump.
- 11:58Speaker 5: They referred me no, no urgently, you went to your guy, know,
- 12:01Speaker 5: just like a prime like a.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Random primary care like it was Kaiser, So it's like
- 12:04Speaker 1: it's a little bit different, but just a primary care.
- 12:07Speaker 5: They can't really do anything.
- 12:08Speaker 1: They just have to basically feel and go, yes, you
- 12:10Speaker 1: should see like a professional, you know, a breast specialist.
- 12:14Speaker 5: I guess.
- 12:15Speaker 1: So then like two weeks after that, went and had
- 12:18Speaker 1: a breast ultrasound and I had a feeling within that appointment.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I was like, Oh, something's off because you could hear
- 12:24Speaker 1: like them taking like pictures and not telling me anything.
- 12:27Speaker 1: There's no like reassurance like oh it's it's you have
- 12:30Speaker 1: dense breasts or like whatever.
- 12:31Speaker 5: It was just quiet. I was like, oh shit.
- 12:34Speaker 1: And then they're like can you stay and get a mammogram?
- 12:37Speaker 1: And I was like I've never had a mammogram, but okay.
- 12:40Speaker 1: And so that's when I kind of had the first
- 12:42Speaker 1: inkling like oh, this is like serious, this is some
- 12:45Speaker 1: something's up.
- 12:46Speaker 2: So when can you discrice.
- 12:49Speaker 6: I've always heard that people say that it's not painful,
- 12:52Speaker 6: like a lot of people. I've always heard that because
- 12:55Speaker 6: anytime I'm about to start my period and I have pain,
- 12:57Speaker 6: I'm like, no, well, if it was something serious, it
- 12:58Speaker 6: doesn't hurt, because that's what they say say same because
- 13:02Speaker 6: I googled.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I'm not googling like I think I literally does breast
- 13:05Speaker 1: cancer hurt, you know, in general? Like the Google which
- 13:09Speaker 1: don't use Google for your doctor diagnosis, guys, But it
- 13:12Speaker 1: said the same thing, like typically it doesn't hurt, and
- 13:14Speaker 1: that is still true. I think people have breast cancer
- 13:17Speaker 1: and it's not physically painful. Mine just happened to be painful,
- 13:22Speaker 1: maybe based on placement, I don't know. And so I
- 13:24Speaker 1: think that's also why I ignored it for so long,
- 13:27Speaker 1: because like, oh it's painful, it's not breast cancer yeah,
- 13:30Speaker 1: and then riamn.
- 13:32Speaker 6: It's just so true to like listen to your body though,
- 13:34Speaker 6: like you were like, you know, you you gave yourself
- 13:37Speaker 6: the benefit of the doubt. You're like, it's not but
- 13:38Speaker 6: then at a certain time it wasn't. It was persistent,
- 13:41Speaker 6: and you were like, I have to take care of it.
- 13:43Speaker 6: And yeah, I was listening to Caitlin's podcast and you
- 13:46Speaker 6: were talking about how it's crazy because what.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Is it before forty? They they your insurance doesn't come.
- 13:53Speaker 1: What's the Yeah, you don't, so it's not standard and
- 13:55Speaker 1: I do perdic. This will change in the future because
- 13:57Speaker 1: it has to. But right now, what we're all taught
- 14:01Speaker 1: as women is like once you're forty, that's what insurance
- 14:03Speaker 1: will cover on mammogram. So all of us have been
- 14:06Speaker 1: kind of like ignoring our breasts. We're like, oh, we
- 14:09Speaker 1: think cancer doesn't happen till you're older. I'll get my
- 14:12Speaker 1: mamragram at forty. That's when I'll start really paying attention.
- 14:15Speaker 1: And then what I quickly learned is so many women
- 14:18Speaker 1: under forty do have breast cancer. And so I'm like
- 14:23Speaker 1: so passionate about like educating people now, like wherever you
- 14:25Speaker 1: think you know you don't like you have to be
- 14:28Speaker 1: so procative every month and like doing a self exam
- 14:31Speaker 1: and it doesn't even have to be some formal formula
- 14:33Speaker 1: of like up, down, left right. Literally the way it
- 14:36Speaker 1: felt is I just like I like to hold my boobs.
- 14:38Speaker 1: I just like I just hold them, you know, Jeff
- 14:40Speaker 1: likes to hold them, you know, And I felt it.
- 14:43Speaker 1: I felt something was off, you know. And so what
- 14:46Speaker 1: I tell people is like, don't feel like you have
- 14:48Speaker 1: to create h.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Right now, everyone, everybody stop.
- 14:54Speaker 3: My doctor always said, like do like a snake and
- 14:56Speaker 3: like go just like around, like just keep going around
- 14:59Speaker 3: and like make it a big a circle. Yeah, but
- 15:01Speaker 3: like to feel for like like p shaped bumps.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Yeah, Mine, I would say, felt like like a wad
- 15:07Speaker 1: of gum, like a little like you know, rubbery almost
- 15:09Speaker 1: like fat. A lot of people like to check their
- 15:12Speaker 1: breasts in the shower because they're so bad and it's
- 15:15Speaker 1: easy to like glide around. But yeah, people need to
- 15:20Speaker 1: be checking their boobs and talking to their doctor even
- 15:23Speaker 1: if they think it's nothing. Let your doctor decide that.
- 15:26Speaker 1: You know, no matter what your ages, no matter what
- 15:27Speaker 1: your family history is, breast cancer does not run in
- 15:30Speaker 1: my family. So all these things that I thought were
- 15:33Speaker 1: like in my favor, actually didn't matter.
- 15:51Speaker 6: So when you got the diagnosis, what what stage was
- 15:54Speaker 6: it when you got the diagnosis.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Well, technically they at the time I was staged three
- 16:00Speaker 1: and triple positive. But then when I transferred care and
- 16:04Speaker 1: you have to kind of get retested everything, I was
- 16:07Speaker 1: actually stage four and I was hormon positive, her too negative,
- 16:12Speaker 1: So it was like a whole it was a whole
- 16:14Speaker 1: different thing, which is crazy.
- 16:15Speaker 6: Can you explain triple I don't know what that means?
- 16:17Speaker 6: So what do is triple positive means? It's so it's hard,
- 16:19Speaker 6: it's so complex. I thought breast cancer was just breast cancer.
- 16:22Speaker 6: But there's triple negative, triple positive, and then mine is
- 16:25Speaker 6: which is horma like er hr positive, meaning it feeds
- 16:30Speaker 6: off estrogen hormones, and then her to either negative or positive,
- 16:35Speaker 6: which is like a protein. I don't really know how
- 16:37Speaker 6: to explain it more on the medical stance, but there's
- 16:40Speaker 6: there's so many different subtypes of breast cancer. And then
- 16:44Speaker 6: based on that is the type of like medicine you get.
- 16:47Speaker 6: Because also I learned chemotherapy is not just a chemotherapy,
- 16:51Speaker 6: it's like a formula of chemotherapy like different names, and
- 16:56Speaker 6: so it's like someone with triple positive versus triple negative
- 16:59Speaker 6: might both get chemothera therapy, but it's different.
- 17:01Speaker 4: hYP formulated differently.
- 17:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:03Speaker 1: So breast cancer is such a way more complex thing
- 17:06Speaker 1: than I knew now that I'm like in it, I'm like, oh,
- 17:08Speaker 1: I'm like an expert. But yeah, from the outside, it's like, yeah, wait,
- 17:12Speaker 1: I thought breast cancer was just breast cancer.
- 17:13Speaker 6: Well yeah, and you see people having different responses to
- 17:17Speaker 6: different medicines and having to do different different steps in
- 17:20Speaker 6: their diagnosis. Yeah, so will you, like what's the next step,
- 17:24Speaker 6: what's your current process and like in terms of medication
- 17:28Speaker 6: and what's to come.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:30Speaker 1: So, so with stage four that means it has spread
- 17:33Speaker 1: and technically it's forever. And I always put quotes because
- 17:36Speaker 1: I just am so confident in like the future and
- 17:39Speaker 1: medical advancements, and the way I try to like really
- 17:42Speaker 1: simplify it is like, because we know it has spread,
- 17:45Speaker 1: there will always be at least one little cancer cell
- 17:47Speaker 1: floating around in my body somewhere, you know. So like
- 17:50Speaker 1: that's why it's not like it's not curable, you know.
- 17:54Speaker 1: But what I'm doing right now, it's called like targeted
- 17:57Speaker 1: therapy where the medicine I'm taking rather than attacking my
- 18:00Speaker 1: whole body, it's it's focused on just the tumor. And
- 18:04Speaker 1: so I just had my three month scan, like I
- 18:06Speaker 1: don't know, last month, I think I don't know. I
- 18:09Speaker 1: lose track of time. Yeah, but the medicine's working. The
- 18:12Speaker 1: tumor in my liver no longer shows up on a
- 18:14Speaker 1: PET scan.
- 18:15Speaker 5: So that's great, that's amazing.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and then the tumor my breast has shrunk significantly.
- 18:20Speaker 1: I'm actually very optimistic that my next three month scan,
- 18:23Speaker 1: I'm hoping it's like they call it no evidence of disease,
- 18:26Speaker 1: like it's shrunk to nothing. But basically I'll be on
- 18:29Speaker 1: this medication forever until, like until either a doesn't work
- 18:33Speaker 1: or be there's like a cure or like something better
- 18:35Speaker 1: than I'm taking.
- 18:37Speaker 2: So do you what are the side effects? What are
- 18:39Speaker 2: you experiencing? Well?
- 18:41Speaker 5: So I take?
- 18:41Speaker 2: So I take.
- 18:42Speaker 1: First of all, I'm in medical and medically induced menopause
- 18:46Speaker 1: because my cancer feeds.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Off hormones little more birth control.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I get a shot, a lupron shot every month, so
- 18:53Speaker 1: I don't have the period, and my hormone levels are
- 18:56Speaker 1: of those going through menopause. So like I literally have
- 18:58Speaker 1: like a hot flash water John right now that do
- 19:02Speaker 1: it shoots like a cold blast of air onto your
- 19:04Speaker 1: wrists so that you can bypass the hot flash that
- 19:08Speaker 1: your brain is about to give you.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Does it work?
- 19:10Speaker 5: It does work?
- 19:11Speaker 1: Oh yeah, So all the effects fide effects people go
- 19:16Speaker 1: through with menopause, so like hair thinning. My vision's a
- 19:20Speaker 1: little not great anymore. I'm tired all the time. Yeah,
- 19:26Speaker 1: memory fog, that's that One's probably the most annoying. Is
- 19:29Speaker 1: someone who's always been like on it. Now I'm like,
- 19:32Speaker 1: I can't keep track of things very well. Yeah, but
- 19:36Speaker 1: like all things considered, like it's it is manageable, and
- 19:41Speaker 1: we're still kind of like figuring out like the proper
- 19:44Speaker 1: dosage and like because it is quote forever them on
- 19:48Speaker 1: this like protocol, I guess we want to find something
- 19:51Speaker 1: that makes it manageable in terms of side effects and whatnot.
- 19:55Speaker 2: So all of those things are you'll be on forever.
- 19:58Speaker 1: So so every month, so I could I could have
- 19:59Speaker 1: my ovaries removed. It's such a permanent thing. I'm not
- 20:02Speaker 1: ready to make that decision, but a lot of people do.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Because the alternative is a monthly shot in your looking ass.
- 20:08Speaker 5: And that sucks. That hurts.
- 20:11Speaker 6: I hate needles. Does your husband do it or do.
- 20:13Speaker 5: You have to go in?
- 20:15Speaker 1: I think I've seen people do it at home. I
- 20:18Speaker 1: can't even Jeff and I did IVF and you get
- 20:22Speaker 1: shots in your belly. I couldn't do that. He had
- 20:24Speaker 1: to do it for me.
- 20:25Speaker 5: I can't.
- 20:25Speaker 1: I could not stick myself with an ady. I don't
- 20:27Speaker 1: think I could actually do it.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:30Speaker 1: So yeah, every month, I get a shot to suppress
- 20:33Speaker 1: my ovaries, and then I take like hormone suppressing pills,
- 20:37Speaker 1: and then this this other drug which is like the
- 20:40Speaker 1: targeted therapy three weeks on, one week off because it's
- 20:43Speaker 1: so strong that you have to have that one week
- 20:46Speaker 1: off to allow like your white blood cell counts to
- 20:49Speaker 1: like recover. So it's I like, right now I'm on
- 20:52Speaker 1: my quote off week, which is like my favorite week
- 20:54Speaker 1: because I feel my best, and then when I start
- 20:58Speaker 1: the new cycle, it's like slowly I'm likedling away and
- 21:00Speaker 1: then get to reset.
- 21:02Speaker 4: Did you take birth control like for a long time.
- 21:05Speaker 5: Ten plus years?
- 21:06Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 21:07Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's tough because I talked to my doctor
- 21:10Speaker 1: about that and she's like, well, you know, they they
- 21:12Speaker 1: say that birth control. Hormonal birth control also decreases your
- 21:16Speaker 1: chance that like ovarian cancer.
- 21:18Speaker 5: So there's like.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Pros and concept every drug, and.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I mean it's not for any unwanted pregnancy. My periods
- 21:24Speaker 1: were great and my skin was great, But then there's
- 21:27Speaker 1: also this world of like okay, but also was I
- 21:30Speaker 1: just taking too much like hormones over time? You know,
- 21:33Speaker 1: like that's the thing with cancer.
- 21:35Speaker 5: I will say. Everyone always tries to dissect why.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I promise you will not figure it out because.
- 21:41Speaker 4: It's different for everybody.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Yeah. I was like, should I have been a vegan?
- 21:44Speaker 1: And then I see a vegan with breast cancers?
- 21:46Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 21:46Speaker 5: Cause I don't have kids yet, and someone who has
- 21:48Speaker 5: kids has it.
- 21:48Speaker 1: So there's no answer as much as we want to know,
- 21:51Speaker 1: like why me, what did I do wrong?
- 21:54Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 21:54Speaker 6: I'm so impressed with your like spirit and your attitude
- 21:59Speaker 6: about this because I think it's such a testament to
- 22:02Speaker 6: the person you are, because I I'm thinking about myself
- 22:05Speaker 6: and I just don't know that I would have the
- 22:08Speaker 6: strength and like the I'm just like, you have taken
- 22:13Speaker 6: something that someone could could have and it could just
- 22:17Speaker 6: be such a different crumble. And not only have you
- 22:20Speaker 6: seem to remain so positive and optimistic, but also you're
- 22:24Speaker 6: so passionate about making sure that other people are taking
- 22:27Speaker 6: care of their health and like being so proactive and
- 22:30Speaker 6: helping other people. And I just have to say, I'm
- 22:31Speaker 6: like blown away by you right now.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Just shut up.
- 22:38Speaker 6: But no, it's just amazing because like you have taken
- 22:41Speaker 6: something that could you could just be mad and why me?
- 22:44Speaker 6: And this is not fair and I'm so young, and
- 22:46Speaker 6: instead you're going, how can I help other people with this?
- 22:49Speaker 6: And how can I remain optimistic so that this is
- 22:52Speaker 6: a story that I get to share my whole life
- 22:55Speaker 6: that can help people. And also, I mean, you can
- 22:58Speaker 6: do any At this point you have to feel like,
- 23:00Speaker 6: well I can handle anything. Well.
- 23:02Speaker 5: I appreciate that.
- 23:03Speaker 1: And as much as like there's moments where you're like, oh,
- 23:06Speaker 1: you're killing it, it's like there's also moments where I
- 23:08Speaker 1: was not and I was crumbling on the floor, and
- 23:10Speaker 1: those those moments still continue. Yeah, it's there's highs and lows.
- 23:14Speaker 1: But the one thing I did before I was public
- 23:16Speaker 1: with my diagnosis is look to other people on social
- 23:19Speaker 1: media for their experience, and that's like what kind of
- 23:22Speaker 1: helped me. I'm like Oh, there's there's other women with
- 23:24Speaker 1: breast cancer who were under forty. Oh, and this is
- 23:26Speaker 1: how they're doing it. I could like see their journey
- 23:28Speaker 1: just like deep dive on their page, and that helped
- 23:31Speaker 1: bring me some kind of calm because I.
- 23:33Speaker 5: Was like, oh, there's other survivors, there's other stage four women.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and then I was like, well, I have to
- 23:39Speaker 1: do this. But then also like I have such a
- 23:40Speaker 1: big platform, It's like, why wouldn't I share my experience
- 23:45Speaker 1: and help other women, Because who knows if last summer
- 23:49Speaker 1: there was someone like me being like, hey, you get
- 23:51Speaker 1: those lumps checked, I might have gone in sooner, you know.
- 23:54Speaker 1: And so this year's been a crazy year with people
- 23:56Speaker 1: like Olivia Munn Jesse j all coming out with these
- 24:00Speaker 1: big platforms of women also then being diagnosed with breast
- 24:03Speaker 1: cancer and like sharing their their dar I say, journey,
- 24:07Speaker 1: but you know, and telling people like, hey, breast cancer
- 24:11Speaker 1: is real no matter what age you're at.
- 24:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:14Speaker 3: I just think it is, Like I feel like it
- 24:17Speaker 3: can be frustrating because I think not just like like mammograms,
- 24:21Speaker 3: like we were saying, if you're you don't if you're
- 24:23Speaker 3: not sent by the doctor or they don't see anything
- 24:26Speaker 3: like you you have to pay out a pocket for
- 24:28Speaker 3: a mammogram, and like every everything is so expensive, and
- 24:31Speaker 3: so it's like all this stuff feels very like daunting
- 24:34Speaker 3: and defeating, and so I think a lot of people
- 24:35Speaker 3: just kind of like, yeah, actually like stored away, you know,
- 24:41Speaker 3: And I think it should really be in the forefront
- 24:43Speaker 3: of all of our minds, you know what I mean,
- 24:46Speaker 3: like and really kind of trying to push the status
- 24:48Speaker 3: quo and like fighting for those things, even like you know,
- 24:51Speaker 3: fertility treatments and stuff like none of that's covered through
- 24:53Speaker 3: insurance and there's still you know, depending on your insurance.
- 24:57Speaker 4: It just it's just sucks.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Yeah, no, it's it's crazy.
- 25:01Speaker 1: And I think the dialogue around like breast health is shifting.
- 25:05Speaker 1: And there's even this study going on where I think
- 25:09Speaker 1: they're like everyone's like, what's what do we do to
- 25:11Speaker 1: fix this? Right? And I think the focus is not
- 25:14Speaker 1: lower the age for mammograms, because not everybody needs one,
- 25:17Speaker 1: but there does need to be more conversation about like
- 25:20Speaker 1: how to check for like your breast and bring something
- 25:22Speaker 1: up what is your family history and not just mom
- 25:26Speaker 1: breast cancer, but like grandpa pancreatic. Yeah, proceeding like all
- 25:34Speaker 1: the things, like all the cancer is not just breast
- 25:36Speaker 1: cancer all it all plays in a role and even
- 25:38Speaker 1: genetic testing. And so there's a study called the Wisdom Study,
- 25:42Speaker 1: if anyone wants to look it up. It's it's a
- 25:44Speaker 1: nonprofit org where there's two studies. One is the standard
- 25:48Speaker 1: of care right now, which is your mammogram staring at
- 25:51Speaker 1: forty and then the other you take a swab of
- 25:53Speaker 1: your saliva, sent it in. They check your genetic making
- 26:00Speaker 1: to see if you are at risk for cancer, and
- 26:02Speaker 1: then based on that they'll give you like a like
- 26:05Speaker 1: a protocol of like okay, based on what you're sharing
- 26:07Speaker 1: with your family history and your genetic makeup, we recommend
- 26:10Speaker 1: doing breast ultrasounds at thirty five. So for example, I
- 26:15Speaker 1: didn't know, but I have a ATM genetic mutation which
- 26:19Speaker 1: increases my risk for breast cancer.
- 26:22Speaker 5: It's not as big as braka. Is that how you'd
- 26:25Speaker 5: say it? The main breast cancer?
- 26:29Speaker 6: Oh?
- 26:29Speaker 5: Oh yeah?
- 26:30Speaker 1: But had I known I had that, I would have
- 26:34Speaker 1: been told to start breast ultrasounds at age thirty.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Wow. Yeah, does anyone did anyone in your family have
- 26:40Speaker 2: a history of breast cancer?
- 26:41Speaker 5: Nobody?
- 26:42Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, which I think is also why you're like, oh,
- 26:44Speaker 1: I'm fine, I know.
- 26:46Speaker 2: And then well, I have.
- 26:47Speaker 6: My grandma on my mom's side had breast cancer and
- 26:50Speaker 6: I don't know what her type was. Like I want
- 26:53Speaker 6: to say they thought it was hormone induced, but I've
- 26:59Speaker 6: always had that thought. So I'm always, you know, doing
- 27:01Speaker 6: my regular checkups, but I haven't had a mammogram, and
- 27:04Speaker 6: I'm like.
- 27:05Speaker 2: I need Like as soon as I heard your story, I.
- 27:07Speaker 6: Was like, I need to go get it checked because
- 27:10Speaker 6: I'm seeing people in their early to mid thirties that
- 27:14Speaker 6: that's the age that we're in, and all of a
- 27:15Speaker 6: sudden you're hearing it. And I think about how I
- 27:18Speaker 6: viewed it for so long as it was like happening
- 27:20Speaker 6: to older people and like I would deal with it
- 27:22Speaker 6: when I got to that age. Yeah, And so I
- 27:24Speaker 6: think it's just so important that you're taking something and
- 27:26Speaker 6: you're like educating people and also encouraging people like, hey,
- 27:30Speaker 6: don't age is irrelevant when it comes to cancer.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:35Speaker 5: Well, and I will say, like.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Insurance with mammograms, like as a standard schedule, it's like yeah,
- 27:41Speaker 1: once you're forty. Yeah, But because I had cause to
- 27:45Speaker 1: get one, insurance we'll cover it. So if if someone
- 27:47Speaker 1: has a lump in their breast, don't feel like, ohoot,
- 27:49Speaker 1: about to be out of pocket for all this stuff.
- 27:51Speaker 1: If you have cause, which is a physical lump, physical
- 27:55Speaker 1: change in your breast, it's not always lump. Sometimes it's
- 27:57Speaker 1: like discharge or dimpling, timbling. Yeah, anything that looks off
- 28:03Speaker 1: with your inverted nipples. There's more than just like a lump.
- 28:06Speaker 1: But your insurance will cover it because there's there's a
- 28:09Speaker 1: reason to explore for the They just don't want to
- 28:12Speaker 1: cover everyone just being like, hey, I just want to
- 28:13Speaker 1: get one just for peace of mind.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, peace of mind.
- 28:17Speaker 6: Did you have any exit like when you got the diagnosis?
- 28:20Speaker 6: Did you have because you hear that word and then
- 28:22Speaker 6: you have these things of like, what's going to happen?
- 28:24Speaker 2: What's my life going to look like?
- 28:25Speaker 6: Did you have any things that have happened unexpectedly or
- 28:27Speaker 6: haven't happened at all that you thought when you know
- 28:30Speaker 6: that when you think of cancer and you think of it,
- 28:33Speaker 6: did you have anything that you were like, oh my gosh,
- 28:35Speaker 6: I can't believe I'm going to have to deal with this, or.
- 28:39Speaker 5: I think the biggest one that will make me emotional
- 28:42Speaker 5: is how did you IVF?
- 28:47Speaker 1: And and and Jeff and I we have two embryos,
- 28:50Speaker 1: which is great, but because of the type of cancer
- 28:52Speaker 1: I have and at stage four, I won't be able
- 28:54Speaker 1: to carry my own baby, And that's not something I
- 28:56Speaker 1: ever had to.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Like think about around Yeah, and.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Obviously you can seem with my reaction, I don't think
- 29:01Speaker 1: I even like fully processed it, because that's just not
- 29:03Speaker 1: a chapter we're in right now, because in the future
- 29:06Speaker 1: we will be like looking for a surrogate and going
- 29:08Speaker 1: through that and like and then hope that the only
- 29:12Speaker 1: two embryos we have because I don't think I can
- 29:13Speaker 1: do IVF again because that's hormones, Like you're packing your
- 29:16Speaker 1: body with hormones.
- 29:18Speaker 5: We just have to hope that it takes.
- 29:20Speaker 1: So, Like, that was a weird one for me that
- 29:21Speaker 1: I just like I never thought of in terms of
- 29:24Speaker 1: like first I'm like, oh, well, well I get to breastfeed,
- 29:26Speaker 1: and now it's not even a matter of that. It's
- 29:28Speaker 1: like I won't even be able to carry my baby.
- 29:33Speaker 1: And then also like I think stage four sounds very scary,
- 29:37Speaker 1: and it is, but I've met so many women who
- 29:41Speaker 1: are ten years into their diagnosis and living fully and
- 29:47Speaker 1: the scans are clear, nothing showing up. And so I
- 29:50Speaker 1: think a lot of people when they first heard I
- 29:52Speaker 1: was stage four, like we're like, oh, she's like I
- 29:55Speaker 1: hate to us we're dying, but like, oh, good luck
- 29:58Speaker 1: to her, you know, like whatever. But I'm like, no, no,
- 30:02Speaker 1: I plan to be here a very long time. Yeah.
- 30:04Speaker 1: And so there's just like so much education around breast
- 30:07Speaker 1: cancer that I'm learning and I want to make sure
- 30:08Speaker 1: other people know that. It's like, you know, it's scary,
- 30:11Speaker 1: but like I want to believe, like everything's going to
- 30:14Speaker 1: be okay.
- 30:15Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, I think your spirit is what's going
- 30:18Speaker 6: to like and I think, you know, life is.
- 30:23Speaker 2: What you're doing is you're able.
- 30:25Speaker 6: You're offering people a different perspective on life. And I
- 30:27Speaker 6: remember I heard you say to Caitlin, like the truth
- 30:31Speaker 6: is we're all dying, Like we're like every day that
- 30:33Speaker 6: we're alive as we're dying. Yeah, And I thought that
- 30:36Speaker 6: was such an incredible perspective of like live it to
- 30:40Speaker 6: the fullest, even though it sounds so like corny of
- 30:43Speaker 6: like living your life to the fullest, but like it
- 30:45Speaker 6: really is so like thinking about those things and like
- 30:48Speaker 6: life and kids and you know, marriage and love and
- 30:52Speaker 6: all these things that we so often just are mundane
- 30:55Speaker 6: and everyday things. It's like you're getting this perspective shift
- 30:58Speaker 6: not only in your own life, but that you're getting
- 31:00Speaker 6: to share with other people, because that really affected you
- 31:03Speaker 6: as well hearing that, because I think you hear these
- 31:05Speaker 6: things that people take for granted and it's just like, wow,
- 31:11Speaker 6: if you have the opportunity sees it. Yeah, but I
- 31:15Speaker 6: think you're gonna everything even though it sucks, because it's
- 31:18Speaker 6: like it just sucks, Like I just want to be
- 31:21Speaker 6: like you're so positive and also like it just sucks,
- 31:24Speaker 6: like it sucks, you.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Know, it's it's and like you'll always be like why
- 31:29Speaker 1: me what you know?
- 31:30Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 31:30Speaker 1: But I I I know it sounds so weird saying this,
- 31:34Speaker 1: but I'm like, if there's anyone to have cancer, let
- 31:36Speaker 1: it be me, because I have the opportunity to share
- 31:39Speaker 1: with so many women and make like such an impact
- 31:42Speaker 1: and like, I'm sorry, please turn like.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Pain into purpose, you know.
- 31:47Speaker 1: And so it's just as much as you're like, oh dang,
- 31:51Speaker 1: you're like killing it. You're so Positive'm like no, yeah,
- 31:53Speaker 1: but there's also like really fucking hard days. Yeah, And
- 31:56Speaker 1: I think that's I think that's just what cancer is
- 31:59Speaker 1: is is not like this upward journey.
- 32:01Speaker 5: Of like positivity.
- 32:02Speaker 1: It's like high highs low lows and some just like
- 32:05Speaker 1: numb and and things will sneak up on you when
- 32:07Speaker 1: you don't expect it.
- 32:08Speaker 5: Like I was.
- 32:10Speaker 1: I was watching Twilight and it was when Bella gets
- 32:12Speaker 1: pregnant and she's like yeah, and I'm like, oh, that
- 32:16Speaker 1: would be me if I tried to have a bait
- 32:18Speaker 1: like it like the random most random thing like tricked
- 32:20Speaker 1: me and then crying over Bella having a baby and
- 32:24Speaker 1: dying and turn into advance.
- 32:25Speaker 5: It's so stupid, you know, But that's like what cancer does.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Like some days you're just like everything's great, and some
- 32:30Speaker 1: days you're like, ah, why you know.
- 32:32Speaker 2: I mean that's just the human experience.
- 32:34Speaker 6: Like if you were like I'm just always positive about this,
- 32:37Speaker 6: I'd be like, are you a robot?
- 32:38Speaker 5: What's your medication? And how do I get it?
- 32:42Speaker 6: But I just I think that the way that you have,
- 32:45Speaker 6: like you said, using it as a purpose. And you know,
- 32:48Speaker 6: how has Jeff handled this because y'all, how how long
- 32:51Speaker 6: have you been together when we're all together when you
- 32:53Speaker 6: were diagnosed?
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, so so we were. We got engaged last
- 32:57Speaker 1: year August, and then I was diagnosed just this February.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Oh just in February.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Yeah, oh wow, yeah yeah, so I'm six months into
- 33:05Speaker 1: my my diagnosis.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, So you all have been together.
- 33:08Speaker 5: For like such, so like a year.
- 33:11Speaker 4: Oh wait.
- 33:11Speaker 5: So it's I know, it's so confusing.
- 33:13Speaker 1: So I'm like, we never had to celebrate a year
- 33:15Speaker 1: of anything because by the time our one year date
- 33:18Speaker 1: came up, we had a one year engagement and a
- 33:20Speaker 1: one year wedding. I'm like, I think we've been together
- 33:23Speaker 1: a year in total, and all the things that we've.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Done, you'll have been through a lot.
- 33:27Speaker 4: Yes, so you've already done all your chemo.
- 33:29Speaker 1: So so that's the crazy part. So I was supposed
- 33:33Speaker 1: to have chemotherapy. I had the port installed, and it
- 33:36Speaker 1: was the day before chemo was supposed to start, and
- 33:39Speaker 1: there's all this medication you're supposed to take leading up
- 33:42Speaker 1: to it, and I'd called my doctor and I was like,
- 33:43Speaker 1: I don't understand these instructions, like how do I do this?
- 33:46Speaker 5: She goes, well, hold on, we.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Still have to. We still have got the info back
- 33:51Speaker 1: on your her two status, which basically means if it's
- 33:55Speaker 1: her too negative. I actually wouldn't have to do chemo,
- 33:57Speaker 1: which was insane to hear. Less than twenty four hours
- 34:01Speaker 1: before my first chemo appointment, I have a port installed,
- 34:05Speaker 1: I have a chemo bag packed my like cold capping
- 34:09Speaker 1: to like help you like retain your hair. And yeah,
- 34:11Speaker 1: long story short, I was her too negative, which meant
- 34:15Speaker 1: I didn't have to do chemo at all.
- 34:17Speaker 3: Oh okay, so what you were saying, the shot and
- 34:20Speaker 3: the medication, that's that's treatment.
- 34:22Speaker 4: That's what it is for forever.
- 34:23Speaker 6: Yep.
- 34:24Speaker 1: So the start of my official treatment was just oral medication,
- 34:27Speaker 1: targeted therapy they might call it.
- 34:30Speaker 5: And that's all I've been doing.
- 34:31Speaker 4: Did you take your port out?
- 34:32Speaker 5: Yeah, so I have.
- 34:34Speaker 1: I have.
- 34:34Speaker 2: I'm like, why did they put that in there?
- 34:36Speaker 5: If they did it, well, so, I mean, because you're
- 34:38Speaker 5: supposed to do it.
- 34:39Speaker 1: You want to believe that your doctors from the other
- 34:42Speaker 1: place were correct. So New York doctors were like moving
- 34:45Speaker 1: forward with everything they had been told from the LA doctors,
- 34:49Speaker 1: but were also thank god, doing their due diligence and
- 34:52Speaker 1: be like, okay, we'll proceed as planned, but let's also
- 34:55Speaker 1: do our checks and balances. And then they're like wait, wait, wait,
- 34:58Speaker 1: this is actually wrong and they double checked the LA
- 35:02Speaker 1: doctors like biopsy, and they're like, no, we were even
- 35:04Speaker 1: retested their test sample. They to this day don't know
- 35:07Speaker 1: how this happened. It's a whole thing. I filed like
- 35:10Speaker 1: a grievance and everything. Yeah, yeah, because that's crazy, Like
- 35:14Speaker 1: imagine me getting because I would have got like the
- 35:16Speaker 1: wrong treatment. Yeah, and then which would have possibly been chemotherapy,
- 35:21Speaker 1: which is so hard on your body, and then for
- 35:23Speaker 1: what for to not actually.
- 35:24Speaker 5: Even work for me, you know. Yeah, that's so I got.
- 35:27Speaker 1: I had a port for like three weeks and now
- 35:29Speaker 1: have like a little matching scar to my lumpectomy.
- 35:31Speaker 2: So yeah, that's a crazy story.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:36Speaker 1: I still like am in shock about that, and like
- 35:39Speaker 1: this is like the crazy thing too.
- 35:41Speaker 5: Like the day that I got the call.
- 35:43Speaker 1: This sounds so stupid, but the day I got the
- 35:45Speaker 1: call that I didn't have to do chemotherapy was the
- 35:48Speaker 1: same day that Jeff got the call that he was
- 35:50Speaker 1: getting a Netflix special. So both him and I were
- 35:54Speaker 1: just on the biggest high that day, just like so
- 35:57Speaker 1: happy and like celebrating together.
- 35:58Speaker 6: Yeah, so I mean, very exciting news.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Day for us.
- 36:05Speaker 5: I think he probably celebrated.
- 36:06Speaker 6: But so when you got the diagnosis, y'all are engaged
- 36:25Speaker 6: at the time. Yeah, And was was that in terms
- 36:28Speaker 6: of getting married in the y'all eloped?
- 36:31Speaker 2: Correct?
- 36:32Speaker 1: Yeah, So we definitely wanted to do a wedding, and
- 36:35Speaker 1: when we still do, we will at some point, you know,
- 36:37Speaker 1: maybe it's a five year celebration. But with everything going on,
- 36:41Speaker 1: I'll cry very too much.
- 36:42Speaker 5: Talk about Jeff.
- 36:43Speaker 1: He was like, I like, am here to stay by
- 36:47Speaker 1: your side, Like I want to prove that to you.
- 36:51Speaker 5: I will, I'll marry you tomorrow.
- 36:53Speaker 1: And I was like, okay, bet, let's do it. Which,
- 36:57Speaker 1: come to find out you cannot get married the next day.
- 36:59Speaker 5: There's a lot of like free work.
- 37:01Speaker 2: You have to do.
- 37:02Speaker 1: But I was like, yes, like I would love, like,
- 37:05Speaker 1: let's do that. And so we flew both our parents
- 37:07Speaker 1: into town. We literally eloped in our apartment, which had
- 37:11Speaker 1: no furniture because we were moving in together quicker than
- 37:15Speaker 1: we expected, and just had a little elopement and dinner
- 37:18Speaker 1: and yeah. And that was just like his way of
- 37:21Speaker 1: just being like, you know, in sickness and in health,
- 37:24Speaker 1: I'm here to stay.
- 37:25Speaker 5: And it was just like he's just the best man
- 37:28Speaker 5: and I'm so lucky to happen.
- 37:29Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Like today he just literally announced his he
- 37:34Speaker 1: officially announced his Netflix special, which is why I can
- 37:36Speaker 1: talk about it. But his tour is coming up and
- 37:40Speaker 1: he is donating one dollar from every ticket sale to BCRF,
- 37:43Speaker 1: which is a nonprofit breast cancer organization. I'm just like,
- 37:47Speaker 1: how did I get like so lucky like to like
- 37:50Speaker 1: have this man, Because the unfortunate reality is when people,
- 37:53Speaker 1: especially women, are diagnosed with breast cancer, their partners will
- 37:57Speaker 1: typically leave, like more likely than not will a partner
- 38:01Speaker 1: like abandon their their spouse when it comes to cancer.
- 38:04Speaker 3: Because even though I had a friend who was it
- 38:07Speaker 3: wasn't cancer at all. She was in the hospital for
- 38:10Speaker 3: it doesn't matter exactly what it was, but it's something
- 38:13Speaker 3: trivial like it was not it was like she was
- 38:15Speaker 3: in and out and within like a week. But again
- 38:17Speaker 3: it was like something it was like had to do
- 38:19Speaker 3: with an autoimmune disorder that she had, and the guy
- 38:22Speaker 3: that she was dating like freaked her out and he
- 38:24Speaker 3: was like peace out.
- 38:25Speaker 5: Yeah, Like what a dude.
- 38:28Speaker 1: So it's yeah, I think women are just like such
- 38:30Speaker 1: like nurturers and would be like I don't want to say,
- 38:32Speaker 1: would never do that, but I'm obviously biased. Girls we
- 38:35Speaker 1: wouldn't stay through that, you know, and men just go like,
- 38:38Speaker 1: oh my nurturing caretaker needs caretaking.
- 38:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know, I'm out, you know.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Yeah, And so every day I'm just like so thankful
- 38:46Speaker 1: for like Jeff is like shown up for our relationship.
- 38:49Speaker 4: And yeah, that's really special.
- 38:50Speaker 5: Nothing he could plan for, Like.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Yeah, how are you prepared to be married to a
- 38:54Speaker 1: cancer patient?
- 38:55Speaker 6: You know, I'm just so happy. I mean, I think
- 38:58Speaker 6: watching your like, you know, it's you're in such a
- 39:00Speaker 6: unique position because we watched your like a part of
- 39:04Speaker 6: your dating life pay out, and it's so it's so
- 39:07Speaker 6: amazing to see with someone who not only just loves you,
- 39:11Speaker 6: but even through what you're going through.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Is like I'm in it, no questions, and god.
- 39:15Speaker 4: You guys found each other.
- 39:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I love it.
- 39:18Speaker 1: It's crazy that like, even like you like we had
- 39:21Speaker 1: to like go through like so much like television and
- 39:23Speaker 1: trauma didn't find our person off the screen, like what
- 39:27Speaker 1: the heck?
- 39:28Speaker 5: But whatever, at least we did it.
- 39:29Speaker 1: You know.
- 39:30Speaker 2: It's a stepping stone.
- 39:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Yeah, have you gotten to go to Disneyland?
- 39:35Speaker 5: You heard about that?
- 39:36Speaker 2: I heard about it. I was upset for you.
- 39:38Speaker 5: No, and no one's called.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Me still and I don't know. I'm so for those
- 39:43Speaker 1: of you who don't know what we're talking about. Usually
- 39:45Speaker 1: the leads get to go to Disneyland as like they're
- 39:48Speaker 1: like reward like and not just Disneyland, but like like, yeah,
- 39:52Speaker 1: just get the lines to.
- 39:53Speaker 5: Bring like your friends and family whatever.
- 39:56Speaker 1: I did not get to do mine, and I probably
- 39:58Speaker 1: think about it like once a month. I haven't been
- 40:00Speaker 1: on the show for like four years. And yeah, so
- 40:05Speaker 1: we talked about on Kaitlyn Bristol's podcast. So no, not yet.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I'm still waiting for my call from somebody.
- 40:11Speaker 2: I'm about to just take you the Disneyland on the private.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the whole team's changed there now, so
- 40:18Speaker 1: who you know, if anyone who works at Disney wants
- 40:21Speaker 1: to let me cut the lines, that's really what it is.
- 40:25Speaker 1: I just haven't I've never experienced Disney like that, and
- 40:27Speaker 1: that's so cool. You have to to be able to
- 40:29Speaker 1: just like sorry, kids, but like I want to skip
- 40:32Speaker 1: the line, you know, I.
- 40:34Speaker 5: Want to just enjoy it.
- 40:35Speaker 1: And I'm so tired all the time that I can't
- 40:37Speaker 1: imagine now going to Disney and like walking and waiting
- 40:40Speaker 1: and no, I would be it would be a waste
- 40:43Speaker 1: of money.
- 40:43Speaker 2: No, I'm going to make this happen. We're gonna make
- 40:47Speaker 2: this happen.
- 40:48Speaker 6: People people are people, call your people. So what's next?
- 40:54Speaker 6: What's what's your life right now? Well, the big things.
- 40:58Speaker 1: I have coming up, I have a colonoscope next month
- 41:03Speaker 1: and then but even bigger than that, I'm having a
- 41:05Speaker 1: double bistectomy in November. Oh yeah, so fully remove them.
- 41:10Speaker 4: Are you doing the reconstruction?
- 41:12Speaker 5: Yes?
- 41:13Speaker 4: So is it two separate surgeries?
- 41:14Speaker 5: It can be.
- 41:15Speaker 1: So I'm going to go straight to implant, and I'm
- 41:17Speaker 1: doing that because I'm going to stay the same size.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Some people will have multiple surgeries because either a they're
- 41:22Speaker 1: going to have radiation, which will then shrink the skin,
- 41:26Speaker 1: and they'll need expanders because it needs to like stretch
- 41:29Speaker 1: that skin back out. Maybe they want to go up
- 41:31Speaker 1: a size, which then also requires expanders. Some people use
- 41:35Speaker 1: fat from their body and put it in there. There's
- 41:37Speaker 1: so many different routes you can go. Some people are
- 41:40Speaker 1: temporarily flat and then six months later we'll do it.
- 41:43Speaker 1: I'm trying to do it all at once, so we'll
- 41:45Speaker 1: see how that goes. But yeah, that's my big surgery
- 41:49Speaker 1: in November.
- 41:50Speaker 2: That's huge.
- 41:51Speaker 6: Yeah, that so was that Because I know a lot
- 41:53Speaker 6: of people that's kind of a Sometimes the doctors are
- 41:56Speaker 6: like this, you have you have to do this, yeah,
- 41:58Speaker 6: and then other people it's a choice because just they're like,
- 42:01Speaker 6: I don't even want it to have a chance to
- 42:02Speaker 6: come back.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Was it both for you or did the doctors recommend
- 42:06Speaker 2: it or was it like a personal choice for you.
- 42:08Speaker 1: I think if my immediate doctors would have preferred, I'd
- 42:11Speaker 1: either did a lumpectomy or just nothing, assuming that maybe
- 42:15Speaker 1: the tumor shrinks completely. It's still there, so we don't
- 42:18Speaker 1: know what that looks like yet, but I essentially it's
- 42:23Speaker 1: like I have the choice. You're in charge of your
- 42:25Speaker 1: body and your health decisions. And so even if my
- 42:27Speaker 1: immediate breast surgeon was like I recommend a lumpectomy, like, well,
- 42:31Speaker 1: I want to remove these killer breasts, you know, So
- 42:36Speaker 1: I found a surgeon who agreed to do it. Because
- 42:38Speaker 1: that's the other thing with stage four. Some people are like, A,
- 42:41Speaker 1: I don't know. And so because my spread was so minor,
- 42:44Speaker 1: it would just there's a phrase for it. I can
- 42:47Speaker 1: never pronounce. It's like augliodastic. I'm so butchering that, but
- 42:51Speaker 1: it means like small spread basically, because I had small
- 42:54Speaker 1: spread to my liver. My surgeon was like, as long
- 42:56Speaker 1: as the liver lesions are taken care of, then we
- 43:00Speaker 1: we can proceed with surgery. And so with my last
- 43:02Speaker 1: scans that they didn't show anything with the liver anymore.
- 43:06Speaker 1: So she's like, all right, I guess we'll put you
- 43:08Speaker 1: on the books.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Wow, how do you feel about that?
- 43:12Speaker 1: I mean, it's a big surgery and it's so inconvenient. Well,
- 43:18Speaker 1: I mean the surgery itself, I think it's like maybe
- 43:20Speaker 1: six hours. I'm under so I won't know, but the
- 43:23Speaker 1: recovery could be like a month. It just really sucks
- 43:26Speaker 1: because I spent my whole life like I'm small chested,
- 43:28Speaker 1: so I spent my whole life finally accepting and loving
- 43:31Speaker 1: my boobs. I was like, I'm happy, I finally have
- 43:34Speaker 1: learned self love and these moobs are my boobs, and
- 43:37Speaker 1: now I have to get rid of them, you know.
- 43:40Speaker 1: And so that's the disappointing part.
- 43:44Speaker 5: But I don't know.
- 43:45Speaker 1: The reconstruction might give me like a little confidence boost
- 43:47Speaker 1: that I don't know I could have.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and you might be like these new girls lady.
- 43:55Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah, Oh, I was gonna ask do you have
- 44:00Speaker 6: are you keeping your last name as of now?
- 44:02Speaker 4: It's such a pain.
- 44:06Speaker 1: I don't like I probably don't know when I'll do
- 44:08Speaker 1: it because there's so many things you have to change,
- 44:10Speaker 1: your bank account.
- 44:12Speaker 5: Security, your past.
- 44:13Speaker 3: Have you started because I apparently when you so, I've
- 44:16Speaker 3: been told when you go to the courthouse and like
- 44:19Speaker 3: start the process to petition to change your name, they
- 44:22Speaker 3: give you like a detailed instruction on like where to go,
- 44:25Speaker 3: what to do, like who to call.
- 44:27Speaker 4: I'm just like, I'm really excited to change my name.
- 44:29Speaker 4: So he's like, I just like need to do it.
- 44:32Speaker 5: No, I feel that it's very special.
- 44:34Speaker 4: Do you have kids? No?
- 44:35Speaker 5: No, do you want kids? I have step kids, step kids.
- 44:37Speaker 4: Okay, there is.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Something that's just very like, I don't know, unifying. If
- 44:40Speaker 1: you want just to like share that like mister and
- 44:43Speaker 1: missus Art and Currie would be mine.
- 44:45Speaker 5: So the plan is too but just I you.
- 44:47Speaker 6: Have a Yeah, well I was saying about it because
- 44:51Speaker 6: when we introduced you, I was like, oh, I wonder
- 44:53Speaker 6: if she's you know, that's a conversation topic.
- 44:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:56Speaker 1: We did go to a wedding and I had his
- 44:58Speaker 1: last name on like my name.
- 45:00Speaker 5: I was like, it's been writing.
- 45:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I know.
- 45:02Speaker 3: I remember my first letter that I got in the
- 45:04Speaker 3: mail with like both of our names on it.
- 45:05Speaker 6: I was like, oh, yeah, well, thank you so much
- 45:09Speaker 6: for coming on and also being so open and vulnerable
- 45:13Speaker 6: and sharing your story in every aspect because I am
- 45:17Speaker 6: blown away by you.
- 45:18Speaker 2: I think you're amazing, and I.
- 45:19Speaker 6: Hope that everything moving forward is of ease and goodness
- 45:25Speaker 6: and celebration.
- 45:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I really.
- 45:28Speaker 3: Really hope that you stay as strong and positive and
- 45:31Speaker 3: just get good news, good news, good news.
- 45:33Speaker 4: I hope it only is good news.
- 45:36Speaker 5: Thank you for me.
- 45:37Speaker 6: I wanted to ask, because I skipped over it, But
- 45:39Speaker 6: your comedy career.
- 45:42Speaker 5: I'm in retirement now.
- 45:45Speaker 1: If anything, I have a whole new like life experiences
- 45:48Speaker 1: to write about.
- 45:49Speaker 5: But yeah, that's definitely not a thing on my list.
- 45:52Speaker 6: I think that would be one of the hardest things
- 45:53Speaker 6: that someone could get me to do, like going and try,
- 45:56Speaker 6: like like going on a stage and being like I
- 46:00Speaker 6: need everyone to laugh at what I'm saying. That sounds
- 46:03Speaker 6: I don't think I could ever do that, So I'm
- 46:06Speaker 6: just like blown away at the I loved it.
- 46:09Speaker 5: In a moment.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Yeah it was great.
- 46:11Speaker 1: But yeah, but now with everything going on and even
- 46:13Speaker 1: like the brain fog, I don't know I could do
- 46:15Speaker 1: it because I would just like space out on stage
- 46:17Speaker 1: and then be like, all right, guys, I guess the
- 46:19Speaker 1: show's over.
- 46:20Speaker 5: Now because I don't remember anything anymore.
- 46:23Speaker 6: You're like, I have my flash guards, but that's yeah,
- 46:26Speaker 6: that's it. Well, thank you so much for being here.
- 46:29Speaker 6: I'm so happy that I finally got to meet you.
- 46:31Speaker 5: Crazy.
- 46:32Speaker 3: Yeah, it's crazy that you guys haven't met I know.
- 46:34Speaker 3: I was like everybody from the Bachelor World were like
- 46:36Speaker 3: best friends.
- 46:37Speaker 1: But everyone there's like hubs, like different cities. Everyone lives
- 46:40Speaker 1: in our states, and so it's like you might meet
- 46:41Speaker 1: like I've met a lot of San Diego people and show,
- 46:45Speaker 1: but now I'm in New York, so you'll meet like
- 46:46Speaker 1: the New Yorkers.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Yeah, New York. How's New York life?
- 46:50Speaker 5: Oh my, it's so different.
- 46:52Speaker 7: It's so hot and ikey, I'm just not a city girl,
- 46:57Speaker 7: but I need to be because you know, Jeff, Jeff
- 47:00Speaker 7: a comic and like New York's the place for the comedians.
- 47:03Speaker 1: When he's not like on the road, he's like they're
- 47:05Speaker 1: the comedy seller. So I think it'll take a minute
- 47:07Speaker 1: for New York to like, you know, rub off on me.
- 47:09Speaker 6: But I think when it cools down and you're getting
- 47:12Speaker 6: the fall weather and like the leaves in Central Park,
- 47:14Speaker 6: I think you're gonna adapt.
- 47:16Speaker 5: Christmas and Christmas.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're do you just need to cool down?
- 47:21Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the thing. It's it's so thick.
- 47:24Speaker 7: Um.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I waste my whole summer being indoors because it's
- 47:27Speaker 1: too hot to cause.
- 47:28Speaker 2: It's a lot here right now too, we've been indoors.
- 47:32Speaker 6: Tanya wears a sweater set every day, so she's in
- 47:35Speaker 6: these offices.
- 47:37Speaker 4: What do you want for me?
- 47:37Speaker 3: I'll never wear like a fun summer's dress to work
- 47:40Speaker 3: because it's like frigid here.
- 47:43Speaker 6: Thank you Katie for being on the podcast. Where can
- 47:45Speaker 6: people follow you on TikTok all the things?

- 48:03Speaker 5: It's on Instagram.
- 48:04Speaker 1: It's like it's kind of thing of it, like a
- 48:05Speaker 1: large group chat, like I think sixty thousand members in it.
- 48:09Speaker 5: Honest, it's a welcome What are those things like Reddit?
- 48:14Speaker 4: No, no, the things that ever? Like, we have one
- 48:17Speaker 4: for honor with Ryan. What's it called? What's it called

- 48:21Speaker 5: It is a broadcast channel, thank you. Yes, it's called

- 48:41Speaker 2: Reddit though.
