- 0:00Speaker 1: I wanted to get to some Texas basketball talk real
- 0:02Speaker 1: quick before ending up ending this hour. Texas back in
- 0:05Speaker 1: action tomorrow night against New Orleans University of New Orleans
- 0:09Speaker 1: after their win on Sunday beating Arkansas Pine Bluff one
- 0:14Speaker 1: hundred and twenty one to fifty seven. You know, Pine
- 0:20Speaker 1: and Bluff. You know, not to take anything away from
- 0:23Speaker 1: Texas m Kin Palm's rankings, which is not the end
- 0:26Speaker 1: all be all.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You know, ranks all three hundred.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And sixty four teams Pine Bluff three sixty two, And
- 0:32Speaker 1: there was some moments in that game where it was
- 0:34Speaker 1: pretty tough. But the good news is Texas and out
- 0:37Speaker 1: looked bad against them and looked really good, especially with
- 0:40Speaker 1: jew and Larry, the transfer point guard from Indiana State
- 0:44Speaker 1: who played at Frisco lone star and more to come
- 0:47Speaker 1: on that. But in the game against Arkansas Pine Bluff
- 0:51Speaker 1: a career high thirteen assists just two turnovers. And asked
- 0:55Speaker 1: his question earlier in the show, who was the last
- 0:58Speaker 1: Texas point guard record thirteen assists in the game in
- 1:03Speaker 1: April fifth, two thousand and three, did you figure it out?
- 1:06Speaker 1: One more hand gave him the final four against Syracuse.
- 1:09Speaker 1: That's right, TJ.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Ford.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Last time Texas has had a player with thirteen assists
- 1:14Speaker 1: in the game twenty one years ago or almost almost
- 1:18Speaker 1: twenty one years ago TJ.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Ford.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Larry also had a double double eleven points, thirteen assists,
- 1:23Speaker 1: first time this year, a second career game or he's
- 1:27Speaker 1: been He's recorded a double double. He's reached uple figures
- 1:30Speaker 1: and assists for the first time this season, second time
- 1:33Speaker 1: in his career, fourth time this year he's been in
- 1:36Speaker 1: double digits in points, a team best plus minus total
- 1:40Speaker 1: of plus fifty six and twenty five minutes on Sunday.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Jordan Pope also with seventeen points. Those two guys are
- 1:47Speaker 1: going to be huge for Texas down the stretch. Tremon
- 1:50Speaker 1: Mark as well. You know what you're going to get
- 1:52Speaker 1: out of Trey Johnson every single game. Arthur Klumba same
- 1:56Speaker 1: thing those two guys, Steady Eddie. But out of the
- 1:58Speaker 1: guards outside of Trey Johnson, who's gonna be the next
- 2:03Speaker 1: kind of step up will be Jordan Pope, Julian Larry.
- 2:05Speaker 1: What can what can Tremont Mark do is he gets
- 2:08Speaker 1: more and more comfortable with this offense. But look the
- 2:12Speaker 1: last two games, last two games, I know they're against
- 2:14Speaker 1: non conference opponents to Mexigo State in Arkansas Pine and Bluff.
- 2:18Speaker 1: But what I've seen since the lost to Ukon, I've
- 2:20Speaker 1: been impressed with. Okay, mentioned we'ren get to some sound
- 2:23Speaker 1: from Julian Larry. This is from yesterday media availability again
- 2:26Speaker 1: coming off that thirteen assists game. The first question he
- 2:30Speaker 1: was asked was about is he seeing the floor differently
- 2:34Speaker 1: after recording those thirteen assists on Sunday.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I would definitely say so.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I would say we're starting to bond more in jail
- 2:40Speaker 3: More and my team I used to starting to know
- 2:43Speaker 3: where to be at, and I'm starting to know where
- 2:44Speaker 3: they're gonna be at as we continue to, you know,
- 2:47Speaker 3: battle throughout these games.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Thirteen assists already mentioned that career high for Julian Larry,
- 2:54Speaker 1: and you know he's working with some great off ball
- 2:56Speaker 1: guys who could move Kaluoma Johnson and Kennell Weaver. Kennel Weaver,
- 3:01Speaker 1: who's been I think so far, he's been a lot
- 3:04Speaker 1: of Texas Fans' favorite players, favorite player of the last
- 3:07Speaker 1: two years because of his ability not only hustle the
- 3:10Speaker 1: acrobatic duns, but also his ability to cut. You know,
- 3:13Speaker 1: he's great without the ball in his hands. It's what
- 3:16Speaker 1: truly makes him special and Larry has been able to
- 3:19Speaker 1: take advantage of that so far.
- 3:22Speaker 2: What about being mentioned next to TJ. Ford. Oh, it's
- 3:25Speaker 2: definitely great.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I've seen TJ a few times, talk to him a
- 3:28Speaker 3: few times, and you know, watch a little bit of
- 3:30Speaker 3: his game. So it's definitely great being mentioned, having my
- 3:34Speaker 3: name mentioned with his name, with these assists and being
- 3:36Speaker 3: a point guard.
- 3:37Speaker 1: So before the availability he Scott McConaughey, the Texas Long
- 3:40Speaker 1: Orange basketball sports information director, mentioned it to the media that, Hey,
- 3:44Speaker 1: the first time since TJ. Ford and Drew and Larry,
- 3:47Speaker 1: you know, kind of nodding his head like, oh, okay, dang,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I didn't know that. I didn't know that at all.
- 3:53Speaker 1: So cool to see him get the right praise for that.
- 3:56Speaker 2: TJ.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Ford, you know, he's always sitting courtside or somewhere at
- 4:00Speaker 1: a Texas basketball game. Now, Larry, of course, off the
- 4:04Speaker 1: bench six man roll has not started. It's been mostly
- 4:08Speaker 1: Jordan Pope as the starting point guard for Texas this season,
- 4:11Speaker 1: and Larry was asked, is it a little bit tougher
- 4:15Speaker 1: for him to be able to find his rhythm off
- 4:17Speaker 1: the bench After transferring to Texas from Indiana State, where
- 4:20Speaker 1: he was the starter.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I mean it's a little bit different, but at the
- 4:23Speaker 3: end of the day, like basketball is still basketball. So
- 4:26Speaker 3: I mean just my hike kind of helped me out,
- 4:29Speaker 3: Like when I come in and just be able to
- 4:31Speaker 3: you know, bring energy and you know, being in my position,
- 4:35Speaker 3: you know, getting out to other guys. You know, that
- 4:38Speaker 3: just helps me get in the rhythm, getting the flow quicker.
- 4:40Speaker 3: You know, once I you know, hit ahead and somebody
- 4:43Speaker 3: gets the layup, it's like all right, Like we can
- 4:45Speaker 3: get going now, Like I'm starting to pick up holes,
- 4:48Speaker 3: see holes in that defense, and then we can just
- 4:51Speaker 3: get that rhythm going.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And also about you know, establishing chemistry as being the
- 4:56Speaker 1: new point guard and playing with new players.
- 4:59Speaker 3: I would say, you know, I've always always been a
- 5:01Speaker 3: point guard, you know, so, but I would just say
- 5:06Speaker 3: just throughout these games, you're gonna just continue to see
- 5:08Speaker 3: more not just for myself, but from my team, just
- 5:11Speaker 3: those high assist games, because that's just a big emphasis
- 5:13Speaker 3: we put just really kicking it to each other, kicking
- 5:16Speaker 3: it ahead, and you know, great ball movement.
- 5:19Speaker 1: So with that ball movement, thirteen assists on Saturday against
- 5:24Speaker 1: Arkansas Pine Bluff.
- 5:25Speaker 3: What does he attribute that too. I would say that's
- 5:29Speaker 3: a testament to our pace. So I mean just the
- 5:32Speaker 3: pace of our offense. It can get people in rotations.
- 5:36Speaker 3: And once I have somebody in a rotation, I'm really
- 5:38Speaker 3: good at getting downhill super fast. So once I get
- 5:41Speaker 3: downhill and then I'll draw, Like once we get that
- 5:43Speaker 3: advantage and then I draw too, then that's when you
- 5:45Speaker 3: see those guys coming open. So that's when you see
- 5:48Speaker 3: spray out threes libs or kick one more. So I
- 5:51Speaker 3: would just say it's off of our pace to start it,
- 5:55Speaker 3: and then just once we get those advantages and I
- 5:59Speaker 3: draw two to the ball and get off of it.
- 6:00Speaker 2: As where those assists are coming from.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I think so far this Texas team, they are better
- 6:06Speaker 1: when they're pushing the ball with tempo in transition. You
- 6:10Speaker 1: got guys who can fly down the floor like Trey Johnson,
- 6:14Speaker 1: like Kenda Weaver, and then you have guys like Juw
- 6:16Speaker 1: and Larry who be able to see the floor. Texas
- 6:19Speaker 1: basketball is better when they're able to play at a
- 6:21Speaker 1: quicker pace with more transition buckets. And I think that's
- 6:25Speaker 1: something that Rtie in the staff are going to try
- 6:27Speaker 1: and push as we get closer and closer to conference play.
- 6:31Speaker 1: More from Julian Larry to come in the next hour.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Here we're gonna wrap up the second hour. Texas back
- 6:34Speaker 1: in action against New Orleans tomorrow night, seven o'clock tip
- 6:38Speaker 1: off time, six thirty airtime.
- 6:40Speaker 2: As we continue here on
