- 1:10Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:19Speaker 1: Oh that was fun, wasn't it? Two hundred and fifty
- 1:21Speaker 1: nine picks later, here we are, everybody back at the
- 1:24Speaker 1: desk for another edition of NFL Now on NFL networked
- 1:28Speaker 1: from our news room in Los Angeles.
- 1:31Speaker 7: My name is ANDREWS. Cicili. I know this right.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Here's the guy that was working on weekend as well
- 1:35Speaker 1: for the draft all three days now that it's finally done,
- 1:38Speaker 1: we had puppies, we had music, we had fun, We.
- 1:42Speaker 9: Had fun, and you know, now we see a lot
- 1:43Speaker 9: of teams where hope springs eternal because we got the
- 1:46Speaker 9: draft pick that's going to put us over the top.
- 1:49Speaker 9: But I love this fact ause lives have been changed
- 1:51Speaker 9: for a lot of.
- 1:52Speaker 2: People, especially these young men.
- 1:53Speaker 9: And salute to a lot of those guys who waited
- 1:55Speaker 9: until the third, fourth and fifth round, sixth round, seventh round.
- 1:58Speaker 9: We have opportunities now to show why they're deserving.
- 2:02Speaker 1: NFL or players that have signed US undrafted agents who
- 2:05Speaker 1: undoubtedly make teams and make plays this coming year, where
- 2:07Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty nine days away from the Thursday
- 2:11Speaker 1: kickoff game with the Kansas City Chiefs hosting somebody.
- 2:15Speaker 7: We'll figure it out later.
- 2:16Speaker 1: However, the trade keeps on moving and there is business
- 2:18Speaker 1: to be done.
- 2:18Speaker 7: It's amazing.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Ian Rappaport, Hello there, great draft weeknd. How we immediately
- 2:23Speaker 1: turned to another deadline, another day of business here for
- 2:26Speaker 1: the NFL, and that is tomorrow being the deadline to
- 2:29Speaker 1: pick up fifth year guaranteed options for the first round
- 2:33Speaker 1: class of twenty twenty Let's start in Green Bay because
- 2:36Speaker 1: this is interesting here for Brian Gudacuins and the Packers.
- 2:40Speaker 1: They have a quarterback now that they are handing the
- 2:42Speaker 1: keys to in Jordan Love. Yet he has only started
- 2:44Speaker 1: one game. Yet they have to decide by tomorrow do
- 2:48Speaker 1: they want to pay him in twenty twenty four.
- 2:53Speaker 6: Yeah, there were a couple of fascinating decisions as we
- 2:55Speaker 6: got closer to the fifth year option deadline, which, as
- 2:57Speaker 6: you mentioned, is tomorrow. There was the Chase Chase Young
- 3:00Speaker 6: deadline that was interesting, did not pick up the option?
- 3:03Speaker 2: No, was the toa.
- 3:05Speaker 6: Decision which, of course the Dolphins did pick up his
- 3:08Speaker 6: fifth year option, and Jordan Love is probably the last
- 3:11Speaker 6: and most interesting one would be about twenty million dollars
- 3:13Speaker 6: if they picked up the fifth year option. But here
- 3:15Speaker 6: is really the decision for the Green Bay Packers. First
- 3:18Speaker 6: of all, there's no decision he is going to be
- 3:20Speaker 6: their starter next year. But this is similar to what
- 3:22Speaker 6: the Giants faced about a year or so ago with
- 3:26Speaker 6: Daniel Jones.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Do they pick up the fifth year option.
- 3:29Speaker 6: About twenty million dollars for Jordan Love and protect themselves
- 3:31Speaker 6: Casey goes out in balls, which they believe he will
- 3:34Speaker 6: or do they just say, you know what, we got
- 3:36Speaker 6: the franchise tag, We're not going to lock ourselves in
- 3:39Speaker 6: to a fully guaranteed contract in twenty twenty four. That
- 3:42Speaker 6: is what the Giants did, But then it got tough
- 3:44Speaker 6: because Daniel Jones played well and they had to pay
- 3:46Speaker 6: a little bit more. So that's the decision for the
- 3:49Speaker 6: Green Bay Packers fifth year option overlying the franchise tag,
- 3:53Speaker 6: and they'll probably have a decision too much.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Yeah, they moved on from Aaron Rodgers. Jordan loves the guy.
- 3:57Speaker 1: They're adam bit about that. But are they Are they
- 3:59Speaker 1: saying right now, we are willing to make a two
- 4:01Speaker 1: year financial commitment to Jordan Love.
- 4:04Speaker 7: And you're fine.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I twenty twenty four would be locked in at twenty
- 4:07Speaker 1: million dollars if they wanted to pick it up, even
- 4:10Speaker 1: though he has started only one game. You see the
- 4:13Speaker 1: quota from Brian Kutakunz. It's a lot of money for
- 4:15Speaker 1: a guy that has only started.
- 4:17Speaker 3: That one game. All right.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Meantime, in Denver we heard his name of the trade
- 4:20Speaker 1: block a couple of weeks ago. That is not going
- 4:22Speaker 1: to happen now. Sean Payton has also been out of it.
- 4:24Speaker 1: We're not trading Jerry Judy, but ian they are picking
- 4:27Speaker 1: up his option.
- 4:29Speaker 6: Yeah, the Broncos are officially picking up the fifth year
- 4:32Speaker 6: option for standout receiver Jerry Judy. And had you asked
- 4:35Speaker 6: about a month ago, I would say this was up
- 4:37Speaker 6: in the air, because there was a time when it
- 4:39Speaker 6: looked like, given the interest around the league, that it
- 4:41Speaker 6: looked like Jerry Judy might actually be traded rather than
- 4:44Speaker 6: a big part of the Broncos future. But one of
- 4:46Speaker 6: the decisions that Sean Payton and George Payton made together
- 4:49Speaker 6: was this guy is a big part of our future.
- 4:52Speaker 6: So the Broncos officially pick up the fifth year option.
- 4:55Speaker 6: He is not going anywhere under contract for two years.
- 4:58Speaker 6: A couple other big ones. Jedrick Wills, the standout lineman
- 5:02Speaker 6: for the Cleveland Browns. He also had his fifth year
- 5:04Speaker 6: option and picked up today. Again not a surprise. He's
- 5:07Speaker 6: a starter, he is very good. They lock him in
- 5:09Speaker 6: the twenty twenty four season. And then this kind of
- 5:12Speaker 6: interesting one. Jeff Akuda, who's the number three overall pick
- 5:15Speaker 6: for the Detroit Lions, was then traded to the Atlanta Falcons.
- 5:18Speaker 6: As part of that trade, the Lions paid one point
- 5:21Speaker 6: five million dollars of his salary to facilitate the trade.
- 5:25Speaker 6: Because his contract was adjusted because the Lions paid for it.
- 5:29Speaker 2: He is not eligible for.
- 5:30Speaker 6: A fifth year option, so it's not the Falcons declining.
- 5:33Speaker 6: It just can't happen. So he is now heading into
- 5:36Speaker 6: a contract year in Atlanta.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Which gives him the opportunity with a new team and
- 5:39Speaker 1: a new defense, to play well this year and maybe
- 5:42Speaker 1: get a nice second contract as a free agent in
- 5:45Speaker 1: year five. All right, let's get to Houston. Obviously, they
- 5:48Speaker 1: made the big splash. They traded up on Thursday. They
- 5:50Speaker 1: got both the quarterback and Will Anderson. They also get
- 5:55Speaker 1: back John metchi Ian. This is a great story.
- 5:59Speaker 6: It is a great story, and you know, from a
- 6:01Speaker 6: human standpoint, it's amazing. Obviously, sat out last year with leukemia.
- 6:06Speaker 6: Apl was the specific form of leukemia, as he said
- 6:08Speaker 6: in the statement at the time, very treatable but still
- 6:11Speaker 6: very serious. Did not play last year and then the
- 6:14Speaker 6: previous year in college towards ACL. So this is a player,
- 6:18Speaker 6: a person who has been through so much and considering
- 6:21Speaker 6: he was on the field for the Houston Texan during
- 6:23Speaker 6: the second phase of their offseason. Conditioning is amazing. And
- 6:27Speaker 6: you know when Mechi announced that he was not playing
- 6:31Speaker 6: last year, he said, I cannot wait to come back stronger,
- 6:34Speaker 6: and that basically is the position that he has put
- 6:36Speaker 6: himself in. It's incredible. Nick Cassario was talking to reporters
- 6:39Speaker 6: after the draft and said, and I'll read this to
- 6:41Speaker 6: make sure I get it right. There are a lot
- 6:43Speaker 6: of people that deserve a lot of credit that could
- 6:45Speaker 6: have helped him get to this point. Start with John.
- 6:48Speaker 6: I would say, it's kind of inspiring for someone to
- 6:51Speaker 6: do that.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it's great.
- 6:52Speaker 7: We're going to see him on the field, and we're
- 6:54Speaker 7: going to see him on the field with C. J.
- 6:56Speaker 7: Stroud among others.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Here Will Anderson when they have their rookie medi camp.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Thank you, Ian Rappaport our NFL network inside. The Panthers
- 7:05Speaker 1: don't do their rookie media camp until next weekend. However,
- 7:09Speaker 1: let's focus on the Eagles here first, Philadelphia. Here's a
- 7:12Speaker 1: picture of the Eagles two first round picks here, Jalen
- 7:17Speaker 1: Carter and Nolan Smith with last year's Jordan Davis. Yes,
- 7:22Speaker 1: the entire band is back together. And then we got
- 7:26Speaker 1: Bryce Young and Brian Burns. This is not bring your
- 7:29Speaker 1: son to workday in Carolina. This is former first round
- 7:32Speaker 1: pick Brian Burns and the first overall pick here, Bryce Young.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Massive size difference and look, I know, redd it like
- 7:41Speaker 1: in the internet and Twitter when crazy with that picture here, Like,
- 7:46Speaker 1: look it's perspective, like it's just the way it's framed.
- 7:50Speaker 7: Okay, that's the way I look at it.
- 7:52Speaker 1: As we look at the Panthers draft picks Bryce Young,
- 7:54Speaker 1: Jonathan Mingo, DJ Johnson, Chandler Zavalla, and Jamie Robinson the
- 7:59Speaker 1: Florida State safety there in the fifth round. However, all
- 8:02Speaker 1: eyes are the chiny outject. All eyes here, Hi there,
- 8:04Speaker 1: camp Wolf, and Hi there, Mark Ross, Happy Monday with
- 8:07Speaker 1: the draft is over all eyes cam on Bryce Young.
- 8:11Speaker 1: From listening to press conferences over the weekend, how have
- 8:14Speaker 1: you gathered they're going to use him and get him
- 8:16Speaker 1: up to speed in this offense?
- 8:18Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 8:18Speaker 10: Andres So it was always Bryce and being in the
- 8:21Speaker 10: Panthers headquarters all week, everybody I ran into had this
- 8:24Speaker 10: giddy smile or smirk, and the word I kept hearing
- 8:27Speaker 10: was point guard. They didn't want to say Bryce Young
- 8:29Speaker 10: until he was the pick, and so every time they
- 8:31Speaker 10: wanted to talk about Bryce, they used the word point guard.
- 8:34Speaker 10: And so I talked with their offensive coordinator Thomas Brown
- 8:36Speaker 10: maybe six hours before they took Bryce Young. And he's
- 8:39Speaker 10: such an important part of this development of Bryce because
- 8:42Speaker 10: Frank Reich has empowered him to put this offense together
- 8:45Speaker 10: to eventually be the play caller. And frank Reich said,
- 8:47Speaker 10: twenty to thirty percent of our offense will be the
- 8:49Speaker 10: Rams offense, and then our ideas mixed with my former
- 8:53Speaker 10: offense to create a quarterback friendly offense initially for Bryce
- 8:57Speaker 10: that eventually becomes Cubic centric in his own mind. And
- 9:00Speaker 10: so Brown told me about that point guard comparison. He said,
- 9:03Speaker 10: we agree with the Steph Curry comparison like everyone else,
- 9:05Speaker 10: but I also think of him as Magic Johnson, a
- 9:08Speaker 10: guy who is a past first player who can score
- 9:10Speaker 10: the size differences aside, you look at a player where
- 9:13Speaker 10: we are building this offense with him in mind. They
- 9:16Speaker 10: have five top receivers who are six two or taller.
- 9:19Speaker 10: They just added Jonathan Mingo, a guy they loved to
- 9:21Speaker 10: be in that group. Bryce can hit those as a playmaker,
- 9:25Speaker 10: he keeps his eyes down field as a scorer. They
- 9:27Speaker 10: saw several elements on tape. We're on third down fourth
- 9:30Speaker 10: quarter two minute drill. He makes that play. He puts
- 9:33Speaker 10: the team on his back when you need him to,
- 9:35Speaker 10: and that final part of the triple double, the rebounding,
- 9:38Speaker 10: is how he has an impact on everyone on the team.
- 9:41Speaker 10: They said there was times where he covered for a
- 9:43Speaker 10: left tackle who missed an assignment or a receiver who ran.
- 9:46Speaker 3: The wrong route.
- 9:47Speaker 10: Those are the things that you don't see a lot
- 9:48Speaker 10: of times that are important for a team, and I
- 9:51Speaker 10: saw that this year in the facility Mark there was
- 9:54Speaker 10: a moment where he was asked, how do you lead
- 9:56Speaker 10: a team coming in here as a number one overall pick?
- 9:58Speaker 10: And he said, I want to come in here and
- 10:00Speaker 10: learn and earn the locker rooms. Trust nothing I've done
- 10:03Speaker 10: in college follows me.
- 10:06Speaker 11: Well, Cam The Panthers are hoping that the Bryce drops
- 10:09Speaker 11: fifty like Steph dropped last night to secure that win there,
- 10:12Speaker 11: so they'll take a few of those. But look, I
- 10:15Speaker 11: thought it was Bryce Young all along. I love Bryce Young,
- 10:17Speaker 11: and you're talking about being the number one pick. Some
- 10:20Speaker 11: people are just built to handle this. Bryce Young has
- 10:22Speaker 11: been a star basically since eighth grade, big time high
- 10:26Speaker 11: school player of course, Alabama, winning the Heisman Trophy trophy
- 10:29Speaker 11: so mentally he was ready to handle this.
- 10:32Speaker 3: He was built for this. On the field, He's built.
- 10:35Speaker 11: For that pressure, the pressure that comes with being an
- 10:38Speaker 11: ultimate playmaker. So the talent and the mine and the
- 10:42Speaker 11: pressure just is supreme for me with Bryce Young, not
- 10:45Speaker 11: just in this draft class, but comparing him to the
- 10:47Speaker 11: great quarterbacks that have come out in the last few
- 10:50Speaker 11: draft classes, but also the foundation that the Panthers have
- 10:54Speaker 11: put in place for Bryce with the all Stars coaching staff,
- 10:57Speaker 11: and they got a ton of talent on that offense now,
- 11:00Speaker 11: great offensive line led by ike Iguano. So the foundation
- 11:03Speaker 11: on and off the field for Bryce Young along with him,
- 11:05Speaker 11: I think just being built from being a star. I
- 11:07Speaker 11: think we're going to see some huge dividends coming out
- 11:09Speaker 11: of this.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:10Speaker 1: A great anecdote from Scott Fitter the GM said, I know, Caam,
- 11:13Speaker 1: you've heard this as well that after sitting with Bryce
- 11:15Speaker 1: Young and having him go through his weekly schedule, his
- 11:19Speaker 1: routine at Alabama, they said it was like you were
- 11:22Speaker 1: sitting with a forty year old man, not some kid,
- 11:24Speaker 1: but like a forty year old that the level of
- 11:26Speaker 1: maturity in preparation was off the charts.
- 11:28Speaker 7: Camp, what else stood out to you yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 10: Paranthers owner David Tepper came out the day after the
- 11:34Speaker 10: day they drafted him and said the expectation is Super
- 11:37Speaker 10: Bowls multiple So we.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Asked Bryce Young what he thinks about that.
- 11:41Speaker 10: He said, I'm one day at a time, but every
- 11:43Speaker 10: time I'm faced with pressure, I view it as an opportunity.
- 11:46Speaker 10: And so this is a franchise changing piece for the Panthers.
- 11:49Speaker 10: They've had eight starting quarterbacks in the last five years.
- 11:52Speaker 10: They've been waiting the last two years to find the
- 11:54Speaker 10: guy that could be the guy that puts them over
- 11:56Speaker 10: the top. And I still remember that scene Friday. We
- 11:59Speaker 10: did a lot of videos of it, of him coming
- 12:02Speaker 10: on for the intro that got the bands playing, a
- 12:04Speaker 10: bunch of fans there. You can tell that's not really
- 12:07Speaker 10: his thing, but what was his thing. He's spent about
- 12:10Speaker 10: thirty minutes sitting out there on the stadium with Frank Wright,
- 12:13Speaker 10: with Josh McCown, just talking ball, envisioning what it will
- 12:17Speaker 10: be like to be the Panthers quarterback. And another moment
- 12:20Speaker 10: I will remember.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Is the CJ.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Stroud moment.
- 12:22Speaker 10: The CJ Stroud picked that Bryce Young going about He's
- 12:25Speaker 10: yelling for his guy.
- 12:27Speaker 2: For CJ.
- 12:27Speaker 10: Stroud as he's getting picked, that's one of his closest guys,
- 12:30Speaker 10: and that's the type of person they are getting in
- 12:33Speaker 10: Bryce Young to lead this franchise. And as I kept
- 12:35Speaker 10: talking with people throughout the organization, they talked about his maturity,
- 12:39Speaker 10: his preparation, and as they look at this NFC South
- 12:42Speaker 10: and say we can own this division for years and
- 12:44Speaker 10: years to come, we feel like we have the right
- 12:46Speaker 10: player on and off the field to.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Do that for us.
- 12:49Speaker 9: Steve Well, it choose you important, especially when you go
- 12:51Speaker 9: in that first overall pick, because that player is going
- 12:52Speaker 9: to be expected to start right away.
- 12:54Speaker 2: What else the Panthers have done to support him?
- 12:57Speaker 9: Besides all those angelary pieces that Mark was talking about
- 13:00Speaker 9: offensive line coaching staff. They drafted Jonathan Mingo in the
- 13:03Speaker 9: second round. You talk Cam earlier about the wide receiver.
- 13:07Speaker 9: I have covered teams personally as a beat writer nationally,
- 13:10Speaker 9: where teams like the Bengals, you get a quarterback, you
- 13:13Speaker 9: get a wide receiver. At the same time, we saw
- 13:15Speaker 9: it with Kenny Pickett last year when they Seeler's got
- 13:17Speaker 9: George Pickens. These are guys who come in and grow together, right,
- 13:20Speaker 9: They're gonna go to rookie mini camp together, they're gonna
- 13:22Speaker 9: go to all the rookie symposiums and all the programs together.
- 13:25Speaker 9: So to have that battery from the beginning grow over
- 13:28Speaker 9: the years together where they can do so many things.
- 13:31Speaker 2: That's hugely important.
- 13:32Speaker 9: Now you get a guy like Mingo, he's a possession
- 13:34Speaker 9: type receiver, right, but we also see some Mississippi.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Receivers do big things.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Translated to the NFL round, Mississippi receivers do well.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Yeah, ud got mean aj Brown.
- 13:42Speaker 9: You know, we got dk Metcalf first round receiver. Those
- 13:45Speaker 9: guys step up and they play ball. So again, having
- 13:49Speaker 9: that chemistry with somebody from his own draft class hugely important. Again,
- 13:53Speaker 9: well thought out and well done by a Panthers organization
- 13:58Speaker 9: that should compete for a playoff berth this year because
- 14:00Speaker 9: they competed, as you for a playoff berth last year
- 14:03Speaker 9: without him and going through a lot of change trading
- 14:05Speaker 9: Christian McCaffrey, having Matt real Good fired in the middle
- 14:07Speaker 9: of the season. So again some pieces are in placed
- 14:09Speaker 9: on the compete right now.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Well and meing Go one of the few guys in
- 14:12Speaker 1: this trapt at wide receivers really out this year that
- 14:14Speaker 1: had the size yep, six.
- 14:16Speaker 7: ' to two and you want to throw in another
- 14:18Speaker 7: second round?
- 14:19Speaker 1: All miss wide receiver Elijah Moore, not known for his size,
- 14:22Speaker 1: also pretty good from the same school, in the same round.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Thanks Steve, Thank you Mark, Thank you Cam. We go
- 14:27Speaker 1: from one to four? Coming up next. How quickly might
- 14:32Speaker 1: we see Anthony Richardson on the field and wait to
- 14:34Speaker 1: hear what your mersey said about where they would.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Have taken.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Dear Anthony, I just wanted to take this move to
- 14:48Speaker 4: express how incredibly proud I am of you. You have
- 14:51Speaker 4: accomplished so much and have shown so much determination throughout
- 14:55Speaker 4: your life. Your hard work and dedication has feed off
- 14:57Speaker 4: in so many ways, and it is truly inspiring to
- 15:00Speaker 4: see the person you have become, whether it is your
- 15:02Speaker 4: academic achievements, your athletic achieved personal growth. You have to
- 15:07Speaker 4: constantly pushed yourself to be the best you can be.
- 15:09Speaker 4: I am an honor to have a brother like you,
- 15:11Speaker 4: and I'm grateful for the examples you have said for
- 15:14Speaker 4: me and others. Keep up the great work and know
- 15:16Speaker 4: that I'm always here to support you all your future adventures.
- 15:19Speaker 3: I love you, bro.
- 15:21Speaker 8: Ay many man appreciate that little bro Dan.
- 15:46Speaker 7: Doesn't get old yet.
- 15:47Speaker 1: A couple of days later, Anthony Richardson the fourth overall pick,
- 15:50Speaker 1: with his brother Corey sending him a message after Richardson
- 15:54Speaker 1: found out that he was going to Indianapolis. Here is
- 15:57Speaker 1: the entirety of Chris Ballard's draft class. From Richardson at
- 16:01Speaker 1: four overall, the tightest leo from Wagner at two eleven.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Listen to what Jim Ersay had to say when the
- 16:09Speaker 1: draft ended about the fourth overall pick.
- 16:14Speaker 9: You know, we kind of felt like if we had
- 16:15Speaker 9: the first pick in the draft, we'd probably take Anthony.
- 16:18Speaker 8: You know that.
- 16:21Speaker 3: You know that. That's how much we liked him.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Look, a lot of owners and GMS and coaches said
- 16:28Speaker 1: that they want to pump up the guy they picked, right.
- 16:29Speaker 1: We hear that very often, but I believe him there
- 16:32Speaker 1: They liked Anthony Richardson that much. Steve White's with me,
- 16:35Speaker 1: Stacy Dale's was there, Mark Ross as well, You're gonna say.
- 16:38Speaker 9: Here, Carolina did a lot of work on Anthony Richardson.
- 16:40Speaker 9: I mean there was a thought bubble, you know, help
- 16:42Speaker 9: for however long Carolina that Anthony Richard could be in
- 16:45Speaker 9: play at number one.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Now, the thought bubble and Stacy the thought experiment here
- 16:49Speaker 1: is how quickly do we get Richardson up to speed
- 16:53Speaker 1: and how soon could we see him on the field
- 16:56Speaker 1: and actually playing in a regular season game.
- 17:01Speaker 5: As quickly as humanly possible. I mean, that's the objective here.
- 17:06Speaker 5: I watched that clip with Anthony and his younger brother
- 17:08Speaker 5: seven years younger. They bounced around from home to home
- 17:11Speaker 5: in Florida, right, grew up without a father figure lived
- 17:14Speaker 5: with his granddad.
- 17:15Speaker 3: I mean, he.
- 17:16Speaker 5: Basically raised his brother. So I get emotional watching that
- 17:20Speaker 5: being around this young man. They fell in love with
- 17:22Speaker 5: him through this process despite thirteen games starting, because of
- 17:27Speaker 5: those traits and those that part of the humility that
- 17:30Speaker 5: comes with him, and he was absolutely the target. Let
- 17:32Speaker 5: me take you back into the draft room really quickly.
- 17:34Speaker 5: They're sitting there at four and they are concerned. There
- 17:37Speaker 5: is palpable tension because does somebody else want our guy
- 17:42Speaker 5: and move up to three. Well, then the Houston the
- 17:45Speaker 5: Arizona deal happened at BAM.
- 17:47Speaker 3: It was a no brainer.
- 17:48Speaker 5: All of that tension lifted off of their shoulders. Morocco Brown,
- 17:52Speaker 5: who's their chief personnel executive and just such a fine
- 17:54Speaker 5: talent evaluator, saw this guy in Florida at Florida back
- 17:59Speaker 5: in August. You guys, he said he had a different
- 18:01Speaker 5: rhythm and bounce to his step, he told us in
- 18:04Speaker 5: his post press conference. And then the ball as we
- 18:07Speaker 5: watch him here from the combine, the ball just flew
- 18:11Speaker 5: out of his hands. He initially thought about Michael Vick,
- 18:13Speaker 5: but then he texted Chris Bell or the GM and said,
- 18:16Speaker 5: you could charge admission to watch this young man throw
- 18:19Speaker 5: the football. Guys, he is twenty years old. And again,
- 18:22Speaker 5: the plan is get him in, teach him the playbook,
- 18:25Speaker 5: understand the lingo, the terminology, get those fundamentals in order
- 18:29Speaker 5: over the next three months, and then get to it
- 18:32Speaker 5: on the field. Let that talent Mark Ross come to life.
- 18:36Speaker 11: Yeah, that's what the Colts are hoping for, right, letting
- 18:38Speaker 11: the talent shine and grow. But that's a quick time
- 18:43Speaker 11: period there. You know, we just expect him to get drafted. Hey,
- 18:46Speaker 11: go through mini camp, training camp, you'll be ready to go.
- 18:48Speaker 11: I think the best thing for Anthony Richardson because he
- 18:51Speaker 11: has not played a lot of football. There's a reason
- 18:53Speaker 11: he has not played a lot of football. It's like
- 18:55Speaker 11: he might not be one hundred percent ready to just
- 18:57Speaker 11: go in.
- 18:58Speaker 3: There and get it done. There's a lot to learn.
- 19:01Speaker 11: There's a lot to learn about leading eighteen. And this
- 19:04Speaker 11: is something unlike Bryce young who I referenced earlier about
- 19:06Speaker 11: he's built for that has always done it, Anthony Richardson
- 19:10Speaker 11: has not done this yet, so this will be somewhat
- 19:13Speaker 11: of a new experience for him taking all of this on.
- 19:16Speaker 3: So I think the best thing.
- 19:18Speaker 11: For him is to, hey, no pressure to beat our
- 19:20Speaker 11: day one starter. Let's learn to be a pro. Let's
- 19:24Speaker 11: learn at your pace. Let's not throw everything at this
- 19:27Speaker 11: young man right away and say, hey, go out there
- 19:29Speaker 11: and do it.
- 19:30Speaker 3: We don't want him to go out there and.
- 19:31Speaker 11: Get crushed at the expectations of losing games, losing.
- 19:35Speaker 3: His confidence right away.
- 19:36Speaker 11: We saw Malie Willis last year, who was considered raw,
- 19:39Speaker 11: how that looked when he got on the field. Anthony
- 19:42Speaker 11: Richardson supremely more talented. But the similar mental aspect where
- 19:45Speaker 11: we got to wait till he's ready steam.
- 19:46Speaker 9: Yeah, these are both great point because Mark, you and
- 19:48Speaker 9: I have both probably talked to a lot of the
- 19:49Speaker 9: people who will tell you this about Anthony Ritchets, and
- 19:51Speaker 9: it's so many minor nuances, smaller nuances of the game
- 19:55Speaker 9: that he's got to learn. He just hasn't had the experience.
- 19:57Speaker 9: He hasn't had specific position coaching. His collegiate head coaches
- 20:02Speaker 9: were also his position coaches. He wasn't always with thequarterback
- 20:05Speaker 9: coach to work with him at different parts of the
- 20:08Speaker 9: game all of the time, and so those are things
- 20:11Speaker 9: that are going to be very important. That said, he's going
- 20:15Speaker 9: to be competing against Gardner Minshew. We know physically he
- 20:17Speaker 9: is going to win that battle. Out of the gate,
- 20:19Speaker 9: he's going to look good. But in the meeting rooms,
- 20:22Speaker 9: if he can get up to speed with Gardner Minshew
- 20:24Speaker 9: and he can prove to his teammates that maybe he's
- 20:27Speaker 9: the better guy.
- 20:28Speaker 2: How do you not play him? Again?
- 20:30Speaker 9: This is an organization that started Peyton Manning again far
- 20:33Speaker 9: more accomplished coming out of college. Let him go three
- 20:36Speaker 9: to thirteen as a rookie with twenty eight interceptions. So
- 20:39Speaker 9: that's going to be in their minds a little bit,
- 20:40Speaker 9: especially the owner's mind.
- 20:42Speaker 2: So there's a lot of things you have to balance here.
- 20:44Speaker 9: But if he ends up being the best quarterback on
- 20:47Speaker 9: the roster and training camp, yeah you may want to
- 20:50Speaker 9: see him to have him learned.
- 20:51Speaker 2: But if he's the best player.
- 20:53Speaker 9: The other fifty two, we're going to say, play the
- 20:55Speaker 9: best player.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Because our livelihoods are at stake as well.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Exactly, even if that best player may have some bumps
- 21:03Speaker 1: along the way, Chris Ballard say, yeah, he may have
- 21:05Speaker 1: a nine for twenty day, but guess what, he might
- 21:09Speaker 1: also run for one hundred yards in that game and
- 21:11Speaker 1: keep you in that game. And therefore, just get him
- 21:13Speaker 1: out there and let's watch him learn. One thing stood
- 21:16Speaker 1: out Stacey Dale's Daniel Jeremiah pointed this Saturday, as every
- 21:21Speaker 1: Chris Ballard pick came in traits athletes Julius Brentson and
- 21:26Speaker 1: Blake Friedland and at A Tamua, at A bar A
- 21:29Speaker 1: and Titus Leo.
- 21:30Speaker 7: I mean, this is an athletic class, Dales.
- 21:34Speaker 3: That was the objective.
- 21:35Speaker 5: The Colts wanted to get more explosive this season, and
- 21:38Speaker 5: Richardson is a reflection of that, and they wanted to
- 21:40Speaker 5: get more athletic. I thought this was a win win, win, win,
- 21:43Speaker 5: win win draft for Chris Ballard and his team. I mean,
- 21:46Speaker 5: when you consider which brought up a great point in
- 21:48Speaker 5: the last segment, Hey, going to draft a quarterback, a
- 21:51Speaker 5: rookie quarterback, why don't you add a receiver, and we're
- 21:53Speaker 5: talking about Josh Downs out of North Carolina. One of
- 21:57Speaker 5: their area scouts, Chad Henry, called him a human chain mover.
- 22:01Speaker 5: He is going to jump right into that slot. He
- 22:04Speaker 5: is a production sheen. Obviously Paris Campbell is no longer there.
- 22:09Speaker 5: And then defensively, I love this. They draft three d backs,
- 22:14Speaker 5: two cornerbacks. Juju Brents out of Kansas State, who returns
- 22:18Speaker 5: home guys to Indianapolis. He is right around the corner
- 22:21Speaker 5: from their facility where he grew up. Long athletics six
- 22:24Speaker 5: three two hundred thirty four inch arms. He jumped in
- 22:27Speaker 5: near forty two inch vertical guys like I just applaud
- 22:31Speaker 5: this in so many ways. Obviously got to se him
- 22:33Speaker 5: on the field as Colts, But great job, Chris Ballard.
- 22:37Speaker 7: But it's pretty cool.
- 22:38Speaker 1: When teams were drafting home town guys like, we talked
- 22:41Speaker 1: a lot about the possibility of Peter Skronski to the Bears.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Obviously didn't happen, but Juju Brentz did happen. The Chargers
- 22:48Speaker 1: in Henley into he Polotu drafted a couple of LA guys.
- 22:50Speaker 1: You could basically ride their bikes from their parents' homes
- 22:53Speaker 1: to SOFI Stadium.
- 22:55Speaker 7: Those are always for me.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Really cool stories.
- 22:57Speaker 7: Thank you Dale's, thank you Mark, thank you Steve Listen.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I know it gets a lot of high but the
- 23:05Speaker 1: draft truly does matter.
- 23:06Speaker 7: Think about this.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Jacksonville had the number one overall picking consecutive years and
- 23:09Speaker 1: then last year they went to the playoffs.
- 23:11Speaker 7: Not only did they go to the playoffs after.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Winning the AFC South, they won a home playoff game
- 23:15Speaker 1: in spectacular fashion. So yes, the moves made Thursday, Friday,
- 23:19Speaker 1: and Saturday do matter. We're now going to take the
- 23:22Speaker 1: big leap and try to figure out which of those teams,
- 23:25Speaker 1: which of the thirty one not named the Jaguars.
- 23:28Speaker 7: Improved the most with this draft.
- 23:31Speaker 1: You're watching NFL Now, NFL Network, Steve Mark, Mark, you
- 23:35Speaker 1: go first. The team that is better today than it
- 23:38Speaker 1: was last Thursday morning is.
- 23:42Speaker 3: The Philadelphia Eagles.
- 23:43Speaker 11: And usually in the draft, it's the team that's trying
- 23:46Speaker 11: to completely rebuild, they got no talent, bad team, or
- 23:49Speaker 11: a team that's just trying to go from good to great.
- 23:52Speaker 11: But this is a team that was in the super
- 23:54Speaker 11: Bowl last season and with an MVP caliber quarterback, with
- 23:59Speaker 11: a roster.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Full of talent.
- 24:01Speaker 11: We know they lost some pieces in free agency, but
- 24:03Speaker 11: surprisingly size them back and Sleigh.
- 24:06Speaker 3: And Brad Barry.
- 24:07Speaker 11: But then you just have an infusion of talent there
- 24:10Speaker 11: with the outstanding value. You know, they crushed night well
- 24:13Speaker 11: with ch Hail and Carter and Nolan Smith there, but
- 24:15Speaker 11: even the rest of the draft where they got Sidney Brown,
- 24:19Speaker 11: my favorite player on the defensive side there, and then
- 24:21Speaker 11: Keeley Ringo, who I thought could have been taken in
- 24:24Speaker 11: the bottom of.
- 24:25Speaker 3: The first So they addressed a lot of.
- 24:27Speaker 11: Needs but also got impact type talent and players, but
- 24:31Speaker 11: also they wanted just because of the way Howie Roseman
- 24:33Speaker 11: once again maneuvered trading up. Let's go get Carter, let's
- 24:36Speaker 11: trade back, go get some more picks. Oh and by
- 24:39Speaker 11: the way, let me just give away a fourth couple
- 24:40Speaker 11: of years from now and get DeAndre fitzswipp who has
- 24:43Speaker 11: a chance to really make an impact on the run game.
- 24:46Speaker 11: So when you put all the facets together with the
- 24:48Speaker 11: expectations of Man, how could the Eagles get better? Well,
- 24:51Speaker 11: they got a ton of impact players, but also the
- 24:53Speaker 11: ability to maneuver around the draft board and then trade
- 24:56Speaker 11: picks to get established players.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Thought it was a masterful job there.
- 24:59Speaker 9: Andrew I'll say this, I mean Philly, I mean loaded
- 25:04Speaker 9: up town. Now they got such whatch depth in all
- 25:06Speaker 9: this talent from the basically University of Georgia North. But
- 25:09Speaker 9: Mark talked about all the great trades and stuff that
- 25:11Speaker 9: hy Rosenbates salute to that nobody made more gangs or
- 25:15Speaker 9: trade than omar Con the Pittsburgh Steelers to come up
- 25:17Speaker 9: to fourteen to get offensive tackle Broderick Jones, who the
- 25:22Speaker 9: Jets were gonna take at fifteen.
- 25:25Speaker 2: And I think overall what the Steelers.
- 25:27Speaker 9: Did in their draft, Mark, we're going to stay in
- 25:29Speaker 9: the Keystone State. They even proved themselves the most because
- 25:33Speaker 9: they get Broderick Jones, they're a play offensive line. Then
- 25:36Speaker 9: to kick off the second round, they get Joey Porter
- 25:39Speaker 9: Junior at corner a knee position, a stud player, someone
- 25:44Speaker 9: that Mike Tomlin knows exceptionally well, who he's going to
- 25:47Speaker 9: know how to coach him to develop into a great player.
- 25:50Speaker 9: And they get Keanu Betten out of Wisconsin right to
- 25:52Speaker 9: fortify the front. And then they add Darnell Washington out
- 25:56Speaker 9: of Georgia.
- 25:57Speaker 7: Some people had at the bottom of the first whose some.
- 25:59Speaker 9: People wo had bottom birs early second I mean here's
- 26:01Speaker 9: a tight end who can make plays, but also he's
- 26:03Speaker 9: a great blocker. So yeah, University of Georgia actually won
- 26:07Speaker 9: the draft, you know, based on all the players that
- 26:09Speaker 9: they're putting in here in the early rounds.
- 26:11Speaker 2: But I love what Pittsburgh diggs.
- 26:13Speaker 9: I thought they're going to be a competitive team anyway
- 26:15Speaker 9: to add this type of immediate impact talent, so that
- 26:19Speaker 9: the two teams at the Keystone State, we're kind of
- 26:21Speaker 9: doing this right now.
- 26:22Speaker 7: Hey, I look at it this way. I'm a Browns fan.
- 26:25Speaker 1: You guys know that I hated the Steelers draft because
- 26:27Speaker 1: it was good.
- 26:29Speaker 3: It's really good.
- 26:29Speaker 7: You're looking at it going like, really.
- 26:31Speaker 1: They did oh man, and it's you're talking about football's family.
- 26:34Speaker 1: You got Porter obviously, his old man played there coach there.
- 26:38Speaker 1: They also now have both her big brothers. Right, they
- 26:42Speaker 1: might bring Derek Wapak that have both Watt brothers. They
- 26:45Speaker 1: have both Hayward brothers, and now Joey Porter Junior. NFL
