Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame Broadcasting.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Craig here on Thursday.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us as we draw just
- 0:27Speaker 1: ever so slightly closer to the weekend.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Cam you said we had somebody.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I mentioned the two ways that the two most let
- 0:38Speaker 1: me put it this way, the most regular ways that
- 0:41Speaker 1: folks have reached out to us, and that was either
- 0:44Speaker 1: on the text line by texting the word Texas followed
- 0:48Speaker 1: by your question or comment to eight one, five three zero,
- 0:53Speaker 1: So you can do that with standard messaging in data rates,
- 0:56Speaker 1: possibly applying. I mentioned the talk about feature on the
- 1:00Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app.
- 1:02Speaker 2: You can do that.
- 1:04Speaker 1: You just download the iHeartRadio app, search AM thirteen under
- 1:07Speaker 1: the zone and then you'll see the red button with
- 1:11Speaker 1: a white microphone.
- 1:12Speaker 2: That's the talk back feature.
- 1:13Speaker 1: You push that button, you can leave us a message
- 1:15Speaker 1: up to thirty seconds about some a topic or a
- 1:18Speaker 1: question or whatever. But there is a third way, and
- 1:21Speaker 1: someone has accessed us via.
- 1:23Speaker 3: That third rapp Mike Carge commenting what up, thank you hardball,
- 1:29Speaker 3: and then also from Carlos Salinas saying just wanted to
- 1:33Speaker 3: say love listening to the show. I will be in
- 1:35Speaker 3: Austin for the game on Saturday, first game since Sam
- 1:39Speaker 3: Ellinger's freshman year.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Looking forward to seeing the Horns and action.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Way to go, Carlos. Glad you're going to be able
- 1:45Speaker 1: to make that game for the first time since Sam.
- 1:47Speaker 1: So I'll add to that. There is a woman. I
- 1:56Speaker 1: guess I should still say young lady because she's considerably
- 1:58Speaker 1: younger than me, but she's probably in her mid thirties,
- 2:02Speaker 1: I guess by now. But anyway, she was a She
- 2:05Speaker 1: was a UT graduate in two thousand and eight, and
- 2:09Speaker 1: I know her. Her name is Danielle Doyer and she
- 2:12Speaker 1: worked as a student in turn of whatever in the
- 2:17Speaker 1: media relations department for baseball, so that's where I'd gotten
- 2:22Speaker 1: to know Danielle. And she's coming to town for the
- 2:25Speaker 1: game with I think she has three cousins. She said,
- 2:30Speaker 1: there's four of them coming to the town for the game.
- 2:33Speaker 1: It will be her first Longhorn football game since two
- 2:37Speaker 1: thousand and eight, since she was an underground. First time
- 2:40Speaker 1: to see him in the stadium. She's been in some
- 2:41Speaker 1: Bowl games, but the first time to see it. I
- 2:43Speaker 1: also know daniel because she is a diet in the
- 2:45Speaker 1: wild Dodger fan and there's.
- 2:47Speaker 2: A little cluster of us. There's a little group of
- 2:49Speaker 2: the group text thing and so okay. And not only that,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I give her credit.
- 2:53Speaker 1: She's a Dodger fan who has to live in San
- 2:55Speaker 1: Diego and I has to live in Sandio. What I
- 2:59Speaker 1: mean is her job here in San Diego, but she
- 3:00Speaker 1: has she has to put up with a lot of
- 3:02Speaker 1: Padre fans or she likes to call them Madres fans.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Nice.
- 3:07Speaker 1: So yeah, so it was especially vindicating for her when
- 3:11Speaker 1: the Dodgers beat the Padres in the Division Series and
- 3:13Speaker 1: then of course went on to win the World Series.
- 3:16Speaker 1: But anyway, she's coming to a long worn game for
- 3:18Speaker 1: the first time since two thousand and eight. So it's
- 3:20Speaker 1: good to hear all these people coming. It's military Appreciation weekend.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Last night on Long Horn Weekly, Sark was wearing really
- 3:27Speaker 1: cool green Camo Camo here uh Camo Texas football hoodie.
- 3:34Speaker 1: It's pretty cool. And we had the guy I call
- 3:37Speaker 1: American hero, Nate Boyer with us. And for folks who
- 3:40Speaker 1: don't know Nate's story, it's fascinating. He was a guy
- 3:45Speaker 1: who and I didn't know there was I know a
- 3:48Speaker 1: lot about Nate because I've known him well over the years,
- 3:50Speaker 1: but there was a couple of things I didn't know
- 3:52Speaker 1: about him. He didn't he didn't play football in high school.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I thought i'd remember to hear any He played some baseball,
- 3:56Speaker 1: he played some basketball, he didn't play football. It was
- 3:59Speaker 1: kind of drifting. Didn't know what he was going to
- 4:00Speaker 1: do with his life. So he joins the military. He
- 4:04Speaker 1: was twenty when nine to eleven happened, and it was
- 4:07Speaker 1: still he said, three more years before he joined up enlisted. This,
- 4:13Speaker 1: by the way, is the story's going to tell tonight
- 4:15Speaker 1: along one weekly, because he was there with us last night,
- 4:17Speaker 1: and he enlisted. He was in the Army. He got
- 4:20Speaker 1: in the Special Forces. He became a Green Beret. He
- 4:25Speaker 1: was on a lot of Black Ops operations and things
- 4:27Speaker 1: like that. As a guy who got very very close
- 4:31Speaker 1: to him, our deer and now departed fro him, Bill Little,
- 4:35Speaker 1: who for many years, of course, was the lead liaison
- 4:39Speaker 1: and media relations for a University of Texas athletics, and
- 4:42Speaker 1: we missed Bill.
- 4:43Speaker 2: He is a great guy. Bill got to know Nate
- 4:45Speaker 2: really well.
- 4:46Speaker 1: That Bill used to say of Nate to me, you know,
- 4:50Speaker 1: he took a few lives talking about some of the
- 4:53Speaker 1: black ops and stuff, and of course Nate didn't discuss
- 4:57Speaker 1: that sort of stuff.
- 4:57Speaker 2: He said, we had a job to do. We went
- 4:59Speaker 2: and did our job.
- 5:00Speaker 1: But he comes out of the service in two thousand
- 5:05Speaker 1: and nine, I believe it was as a Green Beret,
- 5:10Speaker 1: a veteran, decorated Bronze star, all of those things, and
- 5:15Speaker 1: doesn't know what he wants to do with his life
- 5:17Speaker 1: except he wants to play college football. Now by now
- 5:23Speaker 1: Nate Boyer's twenty eight years old, but he wants to
- 5:25Speaker 1: play college football.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And he said.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Even he started to think about this while following the
- 5:31Speaker 1: Loghorns during that two thousand and eight season when they
- 5:34Speaker 1: ascended to number one, and of course had there was
- 5:36Speaker 1: the Michael Crabtree game in Texas ended up winning the
- 5:38Speaker 1: Fiesta Bowl and finishing number three in the country. But
- 5:42Speaker 1: he had never lived in Texas. He was from California,
- 5:46Speaker 1: but he had friends from Texas. So he became an
- 5:48Speaker 1: amorate with the Long Warn football program, and he started
- 5:50Speaker 1: doing football training while still in Afghanistan and said he
- 5:57Speaker 1: was like, you know, backpedaling as a d be on
- 6:00Speaker 1: routes through sand and doing all of these drills and things.
- 6:04Speaker 2: So he gets back, he said. He went.
- 6:07Speaker 1: He took his transcript with him down to the admissions
- 6:12Speaker 1: office at UT He said, I dressed out and I
- 6:13Speaker 1: dressed blues and everything. Walked in and said, am I
- 6:16Speaker 1: able to enroll? And they looked at his GPA, which
- 6:20Speaker 1: he said was like two point nine. It was just
- 6:22Speaker 1: a tad blow a three point zero, and they said,
- 6:26Speaker 1: you probably need to take some junior college classes.
- 6:29Speaker 2: So he did. He went to JUCO.
- 6:32Speaker 1: This is, by the way, this is the closest thing
- 6:34Speaker 1: to a Texas version of Rudy. He goes to JUCO,
- 6:37Speaker 1: he takes classes, then he comes out of that he's
- 6:42Speaker 1: able to enroll. There were some tryouts for walk on positions.
- 6:46Speaker 1: He tries out. He makes it as a walk on,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and like in twenty ten, he's there and never sees
- 6:53Speaker 1: the field. It's the spring ball. He goes to coach Brown.
- 6:57Speaker 1: He says to Mac, I really want to play. I
- 6:59Speaker 1: think I can do this. Been working on this deep
- 7:01Speaker 1: snapping thing, I think. So he tries and he and
- 7:04Speaker 1: he becomes the deep snapper. He snapped on punts and
- 7:09Speaker 1: placements the first year and then just placements the rest
- 7:11Speaker 1: of the time. But he did that and lettered and
- 7:16Speaker 1: did all of those things. He actually got signed to
- 7:21Speaker 1: a free agent deal by the Seattle Seahawks, made the
- 7:23Speaker 1: first cut in twenty fifteen, and then was that go?
- 7:28Speaker 1: And he said, so, then I had to figure out
- 7:29Speaker 1: what's next in my life. And he's become a bit
- 7:32Speaker 1: of a filmmaker, an actor, a philanthropist. He's also the
- 7:37Speaker 1: guy when the whole Colin Kaepernick thing was going down
- 7:40Speaker 1: and all the controversy, Nate Boyer was the intermediary who
- 7:45Speaker 1: stepped in and was a council of sorts to Kaepernick
- 7:50Speaker 1: and kind of go between between that and the NFL
- 7:52Speaker 1: and things of that nature and being a voice or
- 7:55Speaker 1: reason saying both sides can have a point on this thing.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And so anyway, he's been involved in a great many things.
- 8:02Speaker 1: But his story is fascinating and he's a part of it.
- 8:05Speaker 1: You'll hear it tonight on long Ward Weekly at seven
- 8:09Speaker 1: o'clock with Coach Sark. Speaking of Sarc, let's hear a
- 8:11Speaker 1: couple of things from before we get to the break here.
- 8:13Speaker 1: First of all, his opening remarks on getting his team
- 8:17Speaker 1: ready for this matchup with the Florida Gators.
- 8:20Speaker 2: A couple of things.
- 8:20Speaker 4: First order business, I want to kick it off by
- 8:22Speaker 4: wishing Angie Kelly and our women's soccer program the best
- 8:26Speaker 4: of luck tonight in the SEC semi finals. A lot
- 8:31Speaker 4: has been made of our entire athletic department moving in
- 8:34Speaker 4: the SEC and for her to get off to the
- 8:36Speaker 4: start that she has with women's soccer has been awesome.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Wish them the best of luck, you know too. Obviously
- 8:43Speaker 4: we've had some roster movement today with John T. Cook
- 8:46Speaker 4: moving on. You know, we have nothing but respect for
- 8:50Speaker 4: he his family. Wish him the best of luck in
- 8:52Speaker 4: his future endeavors. And then moving on to Saturday, pretty
- 8:58Speaker 4: cool day for us. You know, once a year we
- 9:00Speaker 4: get to kind of salute our service and our vets
- 9:03Speaker 4: and what they what they do and have done for
- 9:05Speaker 4: our country to provide the opportunities that that we get
- 9:09Speaker 4: to have, and so excited to.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Be able to do that.
- 9:13Speaker 4: And then we get to welcome in a really good
- 9:14Speaker 4: Florida Gators team. And the more I've watched them here
- 9:18Speaker 4: throughout the week, the more respect I have for the
- 9:21Speaker 4: roster that they have, the coaching that they do, the
- 9:24Speaker 4: nature in which they play the game. These guys are
- 9:27Speaker 4: our big, physical, long team and one that has played
- 9:31Speaker 4: really good football last month and a half or so
- 9:33Speaker 4: of this season. And so think about the two losses
- 9:36Speaker 4: that they've had. One was to Tennessee on the road
- 9:39Speaker 4: in overtime. Who's the number seven team in the CFP
- 9:43Speaker 4: right now, and then they took Georgia to the Wires
- 9:47Speaker 4: tie ball game with about seven minutes to go last week,
- 9:49Speaker 4: Who's number three in the CFP. So it's a very
- 9:52Speaker 4: quality opponent. And on the flip side, I think we've
- 9:55Speaker 4: had a really good week of work, you know, I
- 9:56Speaker 4: think the buye came in a good time for us,
- 10:00Speaker 4: and I appreciated our players kind of intent, the urgency,
- 10:05Speaker 4: and the energy of which they practiced this week. And
- 10:07Speaker 4: I felt it all the way up and through till
- 10:09Speaker 4: today's practice. I mean, they were really flying around, and
- 10:12Speaker 4: that's always a concern as a coach you get into November,
- 10:16Speaker 4: you know, sometimes practice can get a little monotonous, and
- 10:19Speaker 4: I didn't feel that at all this week, and so
- 10:21Speaker 4: that's a good sign for us. And now we got
- 10:23Speaker 4: to put it all together and play again football Saturday
- 10:25Speaker 4: at eleven am.
- 10:27Speaker 2: All right.
- 10:27Speaker 1: And then on to a couple of questions, he was
- 10:30Speaker 1: asked you heard him saying that John Tay Cook had
- 10:34Speaker 1: decided to leave the program.
- 10:35Speaker 2: More on that at the moment, but.
- 10:39Speaker 1: As an adjunct question to that, Sark was asked, does
- 10:43Speaker 1: he expect to see attrition at a position like wide
- 10:48Speaker 1: receiver where you have plenty of debt And we've talked
- 10:50Speaker 1: about a lot of depth that the wide receiver and
- 10:52Speaker 1: the defensive back positions and even the defensive line as well.
- 10:57Speaker 1: But he was asked if he expects does he has
- 11:02Speaker 1: he come to expect that attrition is a natural thing
- 11:07Speaker 1: to have happen at a position with a lot of
- 11:09Speaker 1: depth like wide receiver.
- 11:12Speaker 4: I think in this day and age of college football,
- 11:14Speaker 4: some of that is natural. You know, we try to
- 11:17Speaker 4: really pride ourselves on being a heck of a developmental program,
- 11:21Speaker 4: and you know, I think that we have some living
- 11:24Speaker 4: examples on our roster today of guys that maybe weren't
- 11:28Speaker 4: frontline starters in year one or year two and then
- 11:30Speaker 4: developed into really productive players in year three or even
- 11:33Speaker 4: in year four. And so I try not to fall
- 11:37Speaker 4: prey to that that that's just what's going to happen,
- 11:41Speaker 4: but I understand it when.
- 11:43Speaker 1: It does happen, If that makes sense. Yeah, all right,
- 11:45Speaker 1: there's that and then one other thing. He was asked,
- 11:51Speaker 1: how challenging is it as a play caller to try
- 11:55Speaker 1: to get your opposing defense off balance with the play calls.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I think I think at one it
- 12:02Speaker 4: all ties together. I hate to just become so specific
- 12:06Speaker 4: it's just the past game or the run game. I
- 12:08Speaker 4: think all the stuff that we do needs to tie together.
- 12:12Speaker 4: And then I think you you have to then have
- 12:14Speaker 4: you know, call things that are one complimentary to other plays,
- 12:19Speaker 4: but two sometimes are outside of the box to to
- 12:23Speaker 4: force a defensive coordinator or or coaching staff to kind
- 12:27Speaker 4: of scratch their head. And I think sometimes naturally every
- 12:31Speaker 4: week you have to present new looks, things that aren't
- 12:34Speaker 4: on tape that they have to adjust to that maybe
- 12:38Speaker 4: take away some of the focus.
- 12:39Speaker 2: You know, we only get you know, about.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Five days with our players to get ready for each week,
- 12:44Speaker 4: and so there's only so much you can do that
- 12:46Speaker 4: is new. But hopefully you have a solid foundation of
- 12:50Speaker 4: work that you put in in training. Cant that we
- 12:54Speaker 4: can use multiple formations, motion shifts, personnel groupings to kind
- 12:58Speaker 4: of disguise or hide some of those things. But then
- 13:01Speaker 4: at the end, as a play caller, you want to
- 13:04Speaker 4: call things that put your players in the best position
- 13:07Speaker 4: to be successful. But on the same token, you want
- 13:09Speaker 4: to make sure you're calling things that the defensive coordinator
- 13:12Speaker 4: and their players don't know exactly what's coming. And that's
- 13:15Speaker 4: a fine line because I can come up with a
- 13:17Speaker 4: brand new set of plays in every situation every week,
- 13:21Speaker 4: but I don't know how fair that would be to
- 13:22Speaker 4: our players that they would have the confidence to go
- 13:25Speaker 4: execute those things.
- 13:26Speaker 1: All Right, there's some from Sark. We'll hear more from
- 13:28Speaker 1: him next hour and also in the four clock hour
- 13:30Speaker 1: from today's media. Zoom up next Inconceivable on a Thursday
- 13:35Speaker 1: afternoon here on sports Radio AM thirteen hunder the Zone.
