- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome into a special pre draft edition of Jags A.
- 0:20Speaker 1: I'm kind Anne Stephen's here with John Osier. Brian Sexton
- 0:23Speaker 1: on location in Detroit, the site of this year's draft.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Will check in with him a little bit later on
- 0:27Speaker 1: in the show. But John, we're getting there. It's almost
- 0:29Speaker 1: draft day tomorrow.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and I was thinking on the way over here today,
- 0:33Speaker 2: thirty drafts for me, thirty drafts for the franchise, more
- 0:36Speaker 2: far more significantly, they've picked number one and early in
- 0:40Speaker 2: the draft a lot, unfortunately, never picked late. You know,
- 0:43Speaker 2: that's where you want to be, picking in number thirty two.
- 0:45Speaker 2: But this year, number seventeen, it's about as in the
- 0:48Speaker 2: middle as you can get, and about as in the
- 0:50Speaker 2: middle as they've ever picked. So an interesting thing, I think,
- 0:54Speaker 2: because they're so in the middle, trade up, trade back
- 0:57Speaker 2: as possible, and we'll certainly get into all that.
- 1:01Speaker 1: We shall. Let's start off with big things. Our first
- 1:03Speaker 1: big thing today is going to be pick your poison,
- 1:05Speaker 1: because they are at seventeen. There's a couple of different
- 1:07Speaker 1: ways that could go with this. We've talked a lot
- 1:09Speaker 1: about possibly going cornerback route, but if you see somebody falling,
- 1:12Speaker 1: there's always that option to trade up. I still think
- 1:15Speaker 1: that's definitely in play, and John, we've talked about there's
- 1:18Speaker 1: other positions that we really wouldn't be surprised if they
- 1:20Speaker 1: went with that.
- 1:21Speaker 2: You have been so focused on corner since this thing
- 1:24Speaker 2: started because I see a need and I see a
- 1:26Speaker 2: sort of a sweet spot with need value at that spot.
- 1:29Speaker 2: But there's people who think they may trade up for
- 1:31Speaker 2: a receiver. I'd be surprised if that happens. As possible
- 1:35Speaker 2: to me, and I'll get into this later in the show.
- 1:37Speaker 2: If you take offensive or defensive line. As I've gotten
- 1:41Speaker 2: older and crustier, I just believe that you can't go
- 1:45Speaker 2: wrong if you're stout, if you can affect the quarterback,
- 1:48Speaker 2: if you can protect, if you can run block most
- 1:52Speaker 2: you know very few teams that are really good. There
- 1:56Speaker 2: are bad. If you have to go line, fine, go line.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Never a bad thing to big strong guy in your
- 2:01Speaker 1: football team, that's for sure. Our second big thing today
- 2:04Speaker 1: is gonna be want versus need. Now, we heard some
- 2:07Speaker 1: from the general manager, who has not been known to
- 2:10Speaker 1: share very much, but he did say that if he
- 2:12Speaker 1: saw that they were at a point in the draft
- 2:14Speaker 1: where it was wants or a need versus best player available.
- 2:17Speaker 1: You might hedge a little toward need.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Well, most of the time, you know, there isn't that
- 2:24Speaker 3: biggest separation between a need and in another position, right
- 2:29Speaker 3: So when in doubt, you're gonna take the need if
- 2:33Speaker 3: it's close, obviously, if it's if there's a great distance
- 2:36Speaker 3: between the two, you got to weigh that out, you know.
- 2:39Speaker 3: And usually what we've done in the past is stick
- 2:42Speaker 3: with the formula to take the best player available. Now again,
- 2:45Speaker 3: if it's close, we're gonna take the higher need.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I think that's how most people would probably play it.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'm sure that take the best player available. People are
- 2:52Speaker 1: pulling their hair out right right now hearing that. But
- 2:55Speaker 1: I mean, it doesn't make sense if you're one or
- 2:57Speaker 1: two picks off of someone and you don't think it's
- 2:59Speaker 1: a home run sure thing, you're gonna go with what
- 3:01Speaker 1: you need on your team right now.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Yeah, It's it's easy to get lost in the theoretical
- 3:07Speaker 2: part of BAP best available player. And I think what
- 3:10Speaker 2: I mean by that is when you talk about it
- 3:12Speaker 2: so much, we'll always take the best available player. Well,
- 3:15Speaker 2: there's this vision that you started the best player in
- 3:17Speaker 2: the draft, you go down to three hundred and thirty,
- 3:20Speaker 2: and then there's these huge gaps that make it obvious. Well,
- 3:22Speaker 2: the reality is there's usually clusters in the draft. There's
- 3:26Speaker 2: about seven or eight guys here that are about the same.
- 3:29Speaker 2: You can't really if you ask to GM, hey, why
- 3:32Speaker 2: is this guy better, he'd say they're about the same.
- 3:34Speaker 2: So within those clusters, teams take need. So that's where
- 3:38Speaker 2: sometimes the BAP purist as I call them, can get
- 3:42Speaker 2: a little bit, you know, like philosophers, where they just okay,
- 3:45Speaker 2: they don't put it into real life all the time.
- 3:47Speaker 2: In real life, you can cluster these guys and then
- 3:50Speaker 2: choose your need, which is why kai you never see
- 3:53Speaker 2: teams take eight centers.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I mean we could use eight centers. Sure, well no,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I'm just kidding. We have a new center, we have
- 4:00Speaker 1: old sunder, and we have plenty of offensive line play
- 4:02Speaker 1: that could be something they address at the draft. Our
- 4:04Speaker 1: final big thing today Draft Day in Detroit. Brian is
- 4:08Speaker 1: on location and Detroit's already talking to people all day long,
- 4:11Speaker 1: and he's caught up with Daniel Jeremiah, who had a
- 4:14Speaker 1: little bit to say about who he thinks in terms
- 4:16Speaker 1: of Quinnon Mitchell maybe heading to this.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Team oh, Quinnon, Mitchell. It's a press corner every day
- 4:22Speaker 4: of the week and twice on Sunday, So that makes
- 4:24Speaker 4: the most sense to me for them. If you're thinking
- 4:25Speaker 4: about marrying a player with the team and you look
- 4:28Speaker 4: at the not only the press man, but just the traits,
- 4:31Speaker 4: you know, the height, weight, speed, combination, the toughness, the physicality.
- 4:34Speaker 4: That kind of fits baal Key's background as well. So
- 4:37Speaker 4: if you're marrying a player that would be one with
- 4:40Speaker 4: the team that I think would make a lot.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Of sense to Dud Johnny's fan in the Flames. Could
- 4:45Speaker 1: be cornerback.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, again, I think it's cornerback. I think it would
- 4:49Speaker 2: be Mitchell if he falls to him or Terry and
- 4:51Speaker 2: Arnold is sort of who I'm thinking going with. So
- 4:57Speaker 2: it will be a draft. As Bucky Brooks has said
- 4:59Speaker 2: multiple t times on our channels, that shows you a
- 5:02Speaker 2: lot about what this team is defensively. I think you
- 5:06Speaker 2: will see press corner a huge priority, maybe tomorrow night,
- 5:10Speaker 2: because that's the way they want to play. I also
- 5:12Speaker 2: think you'll see it sometime again before Day three gets
- 5:17Speaker 2: very long. I think you'll see it before the fourth
- 5:18Speaker 2: fifth round.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Very good, all right, we're gonna take a quick break.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Then we'll check in with Brian, who is in on
- 5:23Speaker 1: location at Detroit in Detroit at the draft. We'll see
- 5:25Speaker 1: you right after the break. Move the fray, move the freight.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Magellan Transport voted the coolest office space in Jacksonville. You
- 5:42Speaker 1: can apply online at Magellanlogistics dot com.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Al remember did a great jot of bearing me for it.
- 5:49Speaker 5: So it's been long, but it's almost like the season.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Like the season is long as highs as low. But
- 5:54Speaker 5: at the same time, you gotta stay focused on the
- 5:56Speaker 5: end goal. And my goal is to get the whatever
- 5:58Speaker 5: organization or whatever organization next.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna go.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Out there and give him my all and I'll just
- 6:03Speaker 5: make a difference.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Alabama cornerback Terry and Arnold. That's someone we've been talking about.
- 6:09Speaker 1: John possibly headed to Jacksonville if he's still on the
- 6:11Speaker 1: board at that point. Let's check in with Brian, who's
- 6:14Speaker 1: on location right now. And Brian Sexson's in Detroit. He's
- 6:18Speaker 1: our draft guy there. What's been going on so far?
- 6:20Speaker 6: Brian, Well, we were out this morning with the players,
- 6:25Speaker 6: the prospects, and some special Olympians and some youth football
- 6:29Speaker 6: players over at the corner Ballpark. It was cool because
- 6:32Speaker 6: it was the site of the legendary Tiger Stadium here
- 6:36Speaker 6: in Detroit, so we got to spend some time. I
- 6:38Speaker 6: wouldn't say it's cold, right, I mean, the wind is
- 6:40Speaker 6: blowing at fifteen miles an hour, it's gray. It's I
- 6:44Speaker 6: guess exactly what you'd expect from the Upper Midwest in
- 6:46Speaker 6: late April. It could be seventy and sunny.
- 6:48Speaker 1: It's not.
- 6:49Speaker 6: It's cold. So we were outside, got a chance to
- 6:52Speaker 6: catch up with a couple of those guys and to
- 6:54Speaker 6: get a feel for it and just to kind of
- 6:56Speaker 6: get the buzz right. Talking to members of the media,
- 6:58Speaker 6: national media guys and John everybody seems to have their
- 7:02Speaker 6: eye on corner for the Jaguars. You know, there's a
- 7:05Speaker 6: little thought to maybe moving towards a receiver, but not
- 7:08Speaker 6: a lot of play for either offensive or defensive line either.
- 7:12Speaker 6: To talk to the experts in the NFL network, guys
- 7:14Speaker 6: that were round like Charles Davis, who I got a
- 7:16Speaker 6: chance to visit with, in Joel Klatt, and of course
- 7:18Speaker 6: Daniel Jeremiah, they all have put cornerback on the Jaguars list.
- 7:23Speaker 6: Here's what's interesting. It seems like they're gonna have the
- 7:25Speaker 6: pick of the litter, because there are teams that are
- 7:28Speaker 6: trying to maneuver their way into quarterback range and guys
- 7:31Speaker 6: who are falling back from the upper reaches of the
- 7:34Speaker 6: top ten back towards ten, eleven, twelve, where there'll be
- 7:38Speaker 6: a receiver or an offensive lineman. Seems like maybe both
- 7:41Speaker 6: of these corners are gonna slide through. Talking to a
- 7:44Speaker 6: reporter from Philadelphia, it's not sure that the Eagles are
- 7:47Speaker 6: that willing to move up for a corner because they
- 7:50Speaker 6: believe that Terry and Arnold or Quiny and Mitchell are
- 7:53Speaker 6: there and if they're not. There's a lot of people
- 7:55Speaker 6: that really like Nate Wiggins from Clemson, and you think, well,
- 7:59Speaker 6: there's only a hunter of seventy three pounds, but he's
- 8:02Speaker 6: got the speed that if he gets beat at the
- 8:03Speaker 6: line of scrimmage in a press man situation, that they
- 8:06Speaker 6: think he could turn and run and really make plays
- 8:09Speaker 6: down the field. And of course people like Cooper to
- 8:11Speaker 6: gen I like him a lot too. They call him
- 8:13Speaker 6: a chess piece of guy that you can play inside
- 8:15Speaker 6: outside either safety position. So there's four names that really
- 8:19Speaker 6: stand out at the cornerback position and the Jaguars seemed
- 8:23Speaker 6: to be in a position if that's what they're going
- 8:24Speaker 6: to take to get the guy they like the most.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Ryan, you got to talk to some of these guys today.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Where are your impressions? I know you talked to two
- 8:31Speaker 1: of the cornerback prospects.
- 8:33Speaker 6: Yeah, well you just played a bit of the interview
- 8:37Speaker 6: with Terry and Arnold. Really a sharp kid from Tallahassee.
- 8:40Speaker 6: He played at John Paul the Second High School. There
- 8:42Speaker 6: is a half brother to Leon Washington, so he's got
- 8:45Speaker 6: a little Jacksonville tie. Would love the idea of staying
- 8:48Speaker 6: in the South of coming back to Jacksonville. When you
- 8:50Speaker 6: ask him what type of a corner is Can he
- 8:52Speaker 6: play mirror? Is he press? He'll do it all, but
- 8:55Speaker 6: he wants to be a shut down corner. Of course,
- 8:58Speaker 6: most of these guys are going to say that a
- 9:00Speaker 6: kid well spoken, a pretty good sized kid too. You
- 9:03Speaker 6: see the hype weight. He's five to eleven, one hundred
- 9:06Speaker 6: and eighty seven pounds, but seemed pretty sturdy. QUINYA. Mitchell
- 9:10Speaker 6: really an oppressive kid from Williston, Florida, about twenty miles
- 9:13Speaker 6: south of Gainesville. Has been playing up in Toledo. Doesn't
- 9:17Speaker 6: matter where he goes. Really a confident kid who knew
- 9:21Speaker 6: when he showed up in Mobile for the Senior Bowl
- 9:24Speaker 6: that he was gonna etch his name in Stone as
- 9:27Speaker 6: one of the top two cornerbacks in this draft and
- 9:29Speaker 6: is potentially a top ten draft pick. Even though he
- 9:32Speaker 6: played at Toledo in the Mid American Conference. He knew
- 9:36Speaker 6: his skill level was strong enough to be able to compete.
- 9:39Speaker 6: He did that in Mobile, He's done that at all
- 9:41Speaker 6: the workouts. Really a confident kid, well spoken, nice kid.
- 9:45Speaker 6: Both of these guys seem like they're ready to take
- 9:47Speaker 6: that next step and not just play on Sundays, but
- 9:50Speaker 6: to contribute immediately.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Kai, Both of these guys feel like pedigree guys, meaning
- 9:56Speaker 2: you never hear anything when you're talking to people about
- 9:58Speaker 2: the draft. You never we're hearing you hear very few
- 10:01Speaker 2: yeah butts. You know.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Uh.
- 10:03Speaker 2: They're both guys who love football, want to be a
- 10:07Speaker 2: lot better the second year than they are the first year.
- 10:10Speaker 2: They're both workers. I would think, just based on pre
- 10:14Speaker 2: draft vibe, if they're both there, you probably go with
- 10:17Speaker 2: Quinnion Mitchell because, as Daniel Jeremiah said, perfect fit for
- 10:20Speaker 2: what they want to do. He's sort of been you
- 10:22Speaker 2: see him rated more as the number one corner and
- 10:25Speaker 2: Terry and Arnold don't think you can go wrong with both.
- 10:27Speaker 2: And you know, if if they both slide there, it'll
- 10:32Speaker 2: be an interesting decision. But if they're both there, as
- 10:36Speaker 2: much as I like the idea of line, I'd be
- 10:38Speaker 2: hard pressed to say they go anywhere but at corner.
- 10:41Speaker 1: All right, we're all gonna kind.
- 10:42Speaker 6: Of talking con Brian just gonna say, talking talking to
- 10:46Speaker 6: people around here today and around the National Football League,
- 10:49Speaker 6: they think that Terry and Arnold gives them the positional
- 10:52Speaker 6: flexibility to play inside or outside. They think Mitchell's primarily
- 10:56Speaker 6: going to be an outside guy. And I know that
- 10:58Speaker 6: we've heard that Darnell Savage is to be that nickel
- 11:00Speaker 6: and play inside. So that's not a guy John that
- 11:03Speaker 6: they really need to target the inside. But Terry and
- 11:06Speaker 6: Arnold is thought to be able to thrive inside or outside.
- 11:10Speaker 6: So look to see what they like there.
- 11:12Speaker 2: If you're short termed, then you like Arnold because I
- 11:14Speaker 2: think they do need somebody who play.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Now right away, all right, we're gonna shift a little
- 11:18Speaker 1: bit from cornerback. We're all gonna kind of who you got, right,
- 11:20Speaker 1: Who do you want to bang the table for where
- 11:22Speaker 1: do you want this team to go? Interestingly enough, we
- 11:24Speaker 1: all did not pick cornerbacks. We thought that was a
- 11:26Speaker 1: little too easy. So John, where would you go? Who
- 11:28Speaker 1: would you go out and say we need this guy?
- 11:30Speaker 2: Well, somebody gonna help me with the name, because I
- 11:31Speaker 2: always butcher it, but KAI got to thank you. I'm
- 11:38Speaker 2: not so much banging the table for him specifically as
- 11:41Speaker 2: I am the idea of line meaning I get corner
- 11:45Speaker 2: as a need. I think they're gonna get either go corner.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I don't think you go receiver in round one because
- 11:50Speaker 2: it's such a deep receiver draft. I guess as I
- 11:54Speaker 2: get older and see more and more teams that lose
- 11:58Speaker 2: because they can't hold up on the offensive line, or
- 12:00Speaker 2: because you're not stout defensively because you're not getting to
- 12:03Speaker 2: the pass or I would have zero problem with either line,
- 12:06Speaker 2: even if it's an offensive lineman that can't start right
- 12:08Speaker 2: away bulking up getting solid to where you don't have
- 12:12Speaker 2: to worry about those two spots. So give me the
- 12:14Speaker 2: pass rusher here.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Uh.
- 12:16Speaker 2: It would be a shock to people because we've been
- 12:18Speaker 2: talking so much about other spots. But if they step
- 12:21Speaker 2: up and say, hey, we needed more pass rush more pressure.
- 12:24Speaker 2: If that's what Trent Falke sanding the podium Thursday, I
- 12:27Speaker 2: wouldn't find that silly at all.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Brian actually caught up with Lot two a little bit
- 12:31Speaker 1: earlier today and he kind of talked about what he
- 12:33Speaker 1: would bring to a team's rush game.
- 12:36Speaker 7: I mean, I'm someone who's you know, in love with
- 12:38Speaker 7: pastor us and love in the game of football. I mean,
- 12:40Speaker 7: I'm always learning something new about pastors and you know,
- 12:43Speaker 7: being just very technical with what I do and making
- 12:46Speaker 7: sure that you know my band will you know, be
- 12:48Speaker 7: able to get me around those old linemen and at
- 12:49Speaker 7: least just always setting that up.
- 12:50Speaker 1: So I mean, Ran, I know you were impressed with
- 12:54Speaker 1: what you heard from Lot to in his interview. You
- 12:56Speaker 1: think you'd be a good fit if they were able
- 12:59Speaker 1: to get.
- 12:59Speaker 6: All energetic kid, really an energetic kid and probably the
- 13:05Speaker 6: best all around pass rusher in terms of the number
- 13:08Speaker 6: of moves, and he's really athletic. You can just see
- 13:11Speaker 6: that he could get low and get that shoulder to
- 13:13Speaker 6: the ground and get around tackles. Told me that his
- 13:15Speaker 6: neck is just fine, and that's what most NFL teams
- 13:19Speaker 6: have found through the medical process. There'll probably be a
- 13:21Speaker 6: couple of teams that will shy away from that. Here's
- 13:24Speaker 6: the thing that really stood out to me. You know,
- 13:26Speaker 6: these guys talk about the end of their college season,
- 13:28Speaker 6: going right into their training right, and then it just
- 13:31Speaker 6: keeps running all the way through their rookie season. One,
- 13:33Speaker 6: he has the energy to handle it. Two, he's got
- 13:35Speaker 6: the perspective because he's a guy who a few years
- 13:37Speaker 6: ago was out of football. The University of Washington retired
- 13:40Speaker 6: him because they didn't want the liability for that neck.
- 13:43Speaker 6: So then after COVID he comes out, goes to UCLA
- 13:46Speaker 6: and is a tremendous pass rusher. He's a guy a
- 13:48Speaker 6: lot of people would like to see, and you can
- 13:50Speaker 6: never have enough pass.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Rush that maybe something where if they are able to
- 13:54Speaker 1: move up to get him. I did something similar. I
- 13:56Speaker 1: think if they're able to move up, if they see
- 13:59Speaker 1: Roma Dunze go past maybe five or six, I want
- 14:02Speaker 1: them to give up whatever they have to do to
- 14:03Speaker 1: go get him. I'm going wide receiver. I know a
- 14:05Speaker 1: lot of people have been saying this. You know, they
- 14:08Speaker 1: want to trade for t Higgins, they want Brandan Auke.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I would love to get someone in this draft. This
- 14:12Speaker 1: is a deep draft. Obviously there's the top three. Those
- 14:14Speaker 1: are the guys that are like the no doubters, right,
- 14:16Speaker 1: if you can have a chance at a Duneesa dropping
- 14:20Speaker 1: down to anywhere where you can trade up and get him,
- 14:22Speaker 1: you have to get him in. And if that's not
- 14:23Speaker 1: an option, I wouldn't be upset if they did. Ad Mitchell,
- 14:26Speaker 1: I know he's falling down some boards for different reasons.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I don't know why I think that's an option. You
- 14:32Speaker 1: just need a speed guy that can separate. That's what
- 14:34Speaker 1: this team's been missing, A bigger, taller receiver that can
- 14:39Speaker 1: do that. If that's someone they can round out this
- 14:41Speaker 1: offense with and just go full Born score thirty five
- 14:43Speaker 1: points and everybody, that's something I'd love to see. I
- 14:46Speaker 1: don't know if that will happen. I don't know if
- 14:47Speaker 1: they'll try to get a wide receiver a little bit
- 14:48Speaker 1: later on because it is such a deep draft. But Brian,
- 14:51Speaker 1: do you feel like they might be able to make some.
- 14:53Speaker 6: Davis Well, Charles Davis doesn't think you're gonna be able
- 14:57Speaker 6: to sit back and have him slide. He told a
- 15:00Speaker 6: story about a couple of different gms he's talked to
- 15:03Speaker 6: who watched him at the combine. Remember, he was a
- 15:05Speaker 6: guy that had that lung injury, and two weeks later
- 15:09Speaker 6: he was back on the field and playing. He didn't
- 15:12Speaker 6: miss a game. He worked all the way through the
- 15:15Speaker 6: off week that Washington had, but he didn't get the
- 15:18Speaker 6: three cone drill that he wanted at the combine and
- 15:20Speaker 6: they were literally turning out the lights in the building
- 15:22Speaker 6: and he was off to the side, still working on
- 15:25Speaker 6: trying to get that time. And so apparently, again this
- 15:29Speaker 6: is from Charles Davis, this is a guy that NFL
- 15:31Speaker 6: personnel people love, and he doesn't think that the Bears
- 15:35Speaker 6: are going to have a shot at him, because he
- 15:36Speaker 6: was telling that to me and to a Chicago reporter.
- 15:39Speaker 6: He doesn't think that the Bears are going to get
- 15:41Speaker 6: him at nine without moving up. So at donsday's a
- 15:43Speaker 6: guy you're going to have to go up to get. Yeah.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Bucky Brooks on the Huddle of podcast this week was
- 15:48Speaker 2: really good on a Douneesday, basically saying that out of
- 15:51Speaker 2: the guys at the top, not denigrating anybody else, but
- 15:56Speaker 2: this is a kid who quote loves football, trying to
- 15:58Speaker 2: get better all the time. They consider him a very
- 16:02Speaker 2: safe pick in the sense that you know, he is
- 16:05Speaker 2: not going to let anything distract him from the job
- 16:09Speaker 2: at hand. Most guys are like that. He's probably a
- 16:12Speaker 2: little more like that than others.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Good to hear, all right, Brian, who's.
- 16:15Speaker 6: Daniel Jeremiah called him a sleep well I was gonna say,
- 16:18Speaker 6: Daniel Jeremiah called him asleep well? You take roma, doun zay,
- 16:21Speaker 6: you sleep well. You don't worry about that. My guy
- 16:24Speaker 6: is Troy fontinatt fa oh tanu there, I can't say
- 16:29Speaker 6: it fast Otano from Washington. I had a guy in
- 16:33Speaker 6: Dallas tell me that he believed that it was this
- 16:36Speaker 6: year's Zach Martin. And for a team that was as
- 16:40Speaker 6: ineffective at converting in short yarded situations and running the
- 16:44Speaker 6: ball between the tackles, who doesn't need Zack Martin. A
- 16:47Speaker 6: perennial All Pro offensive lineman probably could play right tackle
- 16:52Speaker 6: because he's got the same size profile and really long
- 16:55Speaker 6: arms like Leon SEARSI probably not a left tackle in
- 16:58Speaker 6: the NFL, though that's what he played at Washington. In
- 17:00Speaker 6: other words, this is a guy who's a great offensive lineman,
- 17:04Speaker 6: can really play wherever you want, from right tackle over
- 17:07Speaker 6: to left guard.
- 17:08Speaker 4: But would give you.
- 17:09Speaker 6: A guy on the inside that would be thought of
- 17:11Speaker 6: as one of the best interior offensive linemen within the
- 17:14Speaker 6: first three years of his career. I've been on the
- 17:17Speaker 6: offensive lineman bandwagon since we started this process, so I'm
- 17:20Speaker 6: staying with it. And I'll take Troy fa Otanu as
- 17:25Speaker 6: the guy that I would stand and bang the table with,
- 17:27Speaker 6: because who doesn't need a great offensive lineman.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Yeah, wouldn't mind seeing it. It feels to me like
- 17:33Speaker 2: this is a little bit of an all in year
- 17:34Speaker 2: in terms of what they did in free agency, what
- 17:36Speaker 2: they didn't.
- 17:37Speaker 4: Uh.
- 17:37Speaker 2: I think they're going to do in the draft. So
- 17:39Speaker 2: I think they're going a little more for need. And
- 17:42Speaker 2: that's why I keep saying corner and you know, within
- 17:45Speaker 2: this scope, it's gonna be corner. Brian, I'd have no
- 17:49Speaker 2: problem with this guy. Would like to see them stouter
- 17:52Speaker 2: on both sides.
- 17:53Speaker 1: As we've learned, you can never have too many offensive linemen.
- 17:57Speaker 4: Yep.
- 17:57Speaker 6: I'll just leave you with this thought from Detroit, and
- 17:59Speaker 6: that is there's just a strong corner vibe with the Jaguars.
- 18:04Speaker 6: I don't know that they're on it because Trent Balky
- 18:06Speaker 6: is not a guy who throws his opinion even behind
- 18:10Speaker 6: the scenes. He's very tight with what he's thinking. Don't
- 18:13Speaker 6: know what the head coach is thinking, so my guess
- 18:17Speaker 6: is as good as anyone's. But I just have this
- 18:19Speaker 6: sense that John corners where they're going.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Brian, thanks for joining us. We'll be checking in with
- 18:23Speaker 1: you again tomorrow live from the Draft.
- 18:27Speaker 6: You got it, guys, have a great rest of the show.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Stay with us here on jags Am. We're gonna do
- 18:31Speaker 1: a little ozone mail bag when we come back here
- 18:34Speaker 1: after the break. Jaguars fans, you can gear up at
- 18:48Speaker 1: fanatics dot com with the latest jag styles. Shop now
- 18:51Speaker 1: and get today's special offer. Fanatics dot Com officially licensed everything. Oh,
- 19:03Speaker 1: welcome back to jack Zam. We're gonna do an ozone
- 19:05Speaker 1: mail bag special edition from EverBank Stadium. We're getting ready
- 19:08Speaker 1: for the draft party, John and I are or it's
- 19:10Speaker 1: getting a little seamy. It's heating up here, but it's
- 19:13Speaker 1: a beautiful day. We're not gonna rub it into much.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Brian's freezing in Detroit, So this is this is better.
- 19:19Speaker 2: It's good to talk to Brian. Wasn't what all right?
- 19:22Speaker 1: Let's do our mail bag here, John. Our first question
- 19:25Speaker 1: is gonna be Michael from Orange Park Florida says, I'm
- 19:28Speaker 1: okay with paying to you law but making him the
- 19:30Speaker 1: NFL's highest peed player, make it make sense.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Yeah, when I was choosing these, I went away a
- 19:35Speaker 2: little bit from the draft because we're talking about it
- 19:37Speaker 2: so much in your This is sort of a topic
- 19:40Speaker 2: their reports, speculation, et cetera. Last week that you know
- 19:44Speaker 2: they might sign Trevor Lawrence to a long term extension
- 19:47Speaker 2: sometime before the draft. I don't know it's gonna happen.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Feels like it's going to trend toward it happening this offseason,
- 19:54Speaker 2: which makes sense because that's when the Borough the Mahomes
- 19:57Speaker 2: contract got done to Josh Allen in that season, go
- 20:00Speaker 2: on into year four. Make it makes sense, Well, they
- 20:05Speaker 2: believe he's the franchise quarterback, and at this point, you
- 20:07Speaker 2: want to lock that up. You want to get the
- 20:09Speaker 2: cap in line. Why highest paid player. I don't know
- 20:11Speaker 2: if he's gonna be the highest paid player, but if
- 20:14Speaker 2: he is, the reason that makes sense is that's just
- 20:16Speaker 2: what happens with quarterbacks. If you believe he's trending toward
- 20:19Speaker 2: being an elite guy, then you have to pay him
- 20:22Speaker 2: based on how the quarterback market goes and like the
- 20:27Speaker 2: red red balloon goes up, up up, and it's yeah,
- 20:32Speaker 2: you can't pay a franchise quarterback that the league believes
- 20:36Speaker 2: is a franchise quarterback, meaning this, if he was in
- 20:39Speaker 2: this draft, where would he go? Probably number one? So
- 20:42Speaker 2: you still believe in the guy. If you want to
- 20:44Speaker 2: lock it up, it's.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Going to be very expensive, all right. Our second question
- 20:49Speaker 1: is Jerry from Jacksonville Beach, Florida. He says, you continue
- 20:53Speaker 1: to discount the idea of a wide receiver. I don't
- 20:55Speaker 1: get this.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean this is a draft related question obviously,
- 20:59Speaker 2: so I don't discount the idea of hey, it'd be
- 21:03Speaker 2: great to get a one. I do discount the idea
- 21:06Speaker 2: for the reason it's a deep drafted receiver. People think
- 21:10Speaker 2: you can go as low as round three and get
- 21:12Speaker 2: a starter. Now, I get they're starter than they're special
- 21:16Speaker 2: the guys at the top or special that you think, okay,
- 21:19Speaker 2: impact right away. There's also a belief in this offense
- 21:24Speaker 2: that you don't necessarily need that a number one alpha
- 21:27Speaker 2: receiver to be a good offense. I also think there's
- 21:30Speaker 2: other needs. The corner just seems like you get that there.
- 21:35Speaker 2: You can go receiver to contribute along with a good group.
- 21:39Speaker 2: I could be wrong. Maybe they go and get a
- 21:42Speaker 2: guy in the top ten. To me, that seems like
- 21:45Speaker 2: a lot of equity to give up to go get
- 21:48Speaker 2: a position where you're okay, and that there's other needs
- 21:52Speaker 2: on the roster. So we'll see tomorrow.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Our final question is gonna come from Devin. He says,
- 21:58Speaker 1: Trevor Trevor Trevor. Is there any story with Etn's contract
- 22:02Speaker 1: a fifth year option? Do we suddenly doubt our running back? No?
- 22:06Speaker 2: And it's Trevor Trevor Trevor, because he's the quarterback, quarterback, quarterback,
- 22:10Speaker 2: and so that's what you talk about. You're also not
- 22:13Speaker 2: hearing a lot about Travis Etn's contract because he's a
- 22:18Speaker 2: running back. He has at least two years left, meaning
- 22:22Speaker 2: this he has one more you left on the deal.
- 22:24Speaker 2: They have a fifth year option. You would think they
- 22:25Speaker 2: would pick that up. That takes you through twenty twenty five.
- 22:28Speaker 2: And the reality is, look, I love Travis. This organization
- 22:31Speaker 2: loves Travis running backs for extensions for four or five
- 22:36Speaker 2: year extensions. Along the line is Trevor Lawrence. It's a
- 22:38Speaker 2: little bit of a different issue where you usually if
- 22:41Speaker 2: you love the guy, you franchise him. If you love
- 22:44Speaker 2: the guy, then you offer him a two or three
- 22:45Speaker 2: year deal. There's time on That is the biggest reason,
- 22:49Speaker 2: though I have no idea what they're going to offer Travis.
- 22:50Speaker 2: I don't know those details. But with quarterback, you lock
- 22:54Speaker 2: it up with wide. With running back, there's a little
- 22:58Speaker 2: bit more of a wiggle room to see. Let's how this,
- 23:00Speaker 2: Let's see how this plays out. Unfortunately, for the running
- 23:02Speaker 2: back position, it's less of a market where you get
- 23:05Speaker 2: locked up right away.
- 23:06Speaker 1: We've seen the running back market change a lot over
- 23:08Speaker 1: the last couple of seasons, and as we've mentioned, they
- 23:10Speaker 1: want to probably see something in these next two years,
- 23:13Speaker 1: whether that be from the offensive line setting up the
- 23:15Speaker 1: run game a little bit more, or Travis himself.
- 23:16Speaker 2: It's just hard to commit to. I mean, it's it's uh.
- 23:19Speaker 2: You know, some running backs that I've covered have been
- 23:22Speaker 2: my favorite players to be around. Really wish that their
- 23:24Speaker 2: careers lasted longer over you know, the summary of the league,
- 23:29Speaker 2: so that they were treated better in terms of long
- 23:31Speaker 2: term contract. But the way teams do it, they believe
- 23:35Speaker 2: that there's a shelf life, so you don't necessarily come
- 23:38Speaker 2: in on year four and offer a five year extension.
- 23:42Speaker 2: The risk is too high, and it's it's the world
- 23:44Speaker 2: we live in right now, so that'd be that, that'd be.
- 23:47Speaker 1: That, all right, Davis, We'll come back after the break
- 23:49Speaker 1: and tell you what we've got coming up for draft
- 23:51Speaker 1: coverage the rest of the week. Whether you need air, electric,

- 24:22Speaker 1: there's gonna be tons of great stuff. They're setting up now.
- 24:25Speaker 1: I believe they're setting up a combine out there, john
- 24:27Speaker 1: Are you gonna run that?
- 24:28Speaker 2: I'm not gonna rine it, but look at that 'ru
- 24:29Speaker 2: on the big board.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Look at us jagsam making the big board. Johnna. You
- 24:35Speaker 1: don't want to run the combine stuff? You want to
- 24:37Speaker 1: test your.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Forty Nobody wants to see that. It's not that it's
- 24:41Speaker 2: not that I don't desire to do it. It's it's
- 24:43Speaker 2: been requested that that not happen.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Okay, higher ups, Okay, that's fair. What will you be
- 24:48Speaker 1: doing instead of that today? On Draft Night?
- 24:52Speaker 2: On Draft Night, I'll be I'll be riding, I'll be
- 24:55Speaker 2: on the air with JP Shatick and uh, you know,
- 24:59Speaker 2: breaking down the draft.
