- 0:00what is up LnM Family, Jesse here with the learnings and missteps pod.
- 0:04Podcast.
- 0:05Another solo cast coming at you.
- 0:08This thought.
- 0:09Here's another one of those learnings and missteps, and I just came.
- 0:13To, to the realization.
- 0:14I, you know, I don't even know if it counts as a realization, it's kind of something that I've been observing in my behavior and observing and other people's, uh, life experience lately.
- 0:26And you may have heard me talk about idea to action.
- 0:29And keeping the space between idea and action, super tight.
- 0:34because of the fulfillment that I've experienced from living my life.
- 0:37That way I have an idea.
- 0:38I take action.
- 0:39and, and magical things happen right now.
- 0:43But thinking a lot about my people that are out there working hard, doing their job, earning a living, supporting their families.
- 0:50That are kind of spent.
- 0:52And thinking about how I have.
- 0:55How I don't ever really feel spent.
- 0:56I mean, I do feel tired because I get, I get going a little crazy on some of my ideas and my projects out here.
- 1:02But I'm having a good time.
- 1:05And the energy seems to be endless.
- 1:08And so I started thinking about.
- 1:11The impact of, of social media.
- 1:14and expanding your, expanding, our influence, right?
- 1:19Helping other people know.
- 1:21Sharing our gifts and talents with other people in a very public way.
- 1:24Yes.
- 1:25I know it's uncomfortable.
- 1:26It takes a lot of practice, takes a lot of time to get used to it.
- 1:29but thinking through all of that, what I landed on was I remember.
- 1:33When I had, you know, my, when I was working for the mechanical contractor general contractor, the owner.
- 1:39I remember.
- 1:40Putting in tons of effort.
- 1:43Uh, to be.
- 1:45You know, to, to get recognized by my boss and for my boss to advocate for me for salary increases, uh, new opportunities increased.
- 1:53Influence within the organization.
- 1:56And it always felt like I couldn't do enough.
- 2:00And I never really could tell.
- 2:03If that energy was going to result in what I was seeking.
- 2:09And I'll give you an example.
- 2:10This is a crazy example, but it's a true story.
- 2:12So back in the day, like the very first job that I ever worked, where I got paid, like by a company.
- 2:19Was at KFC, Kentucky fried chicken.
- 2:22and I was there.
- 2:23My gold.
- 2:25Was to earn employee of the month.
- 2:28Mind you, this was my first month.
- 2:31And I'll be damn.
- 2:32We come up to the end of the month and I kind of remember we had like monthly meet monthly employee meetings and where they would announce employee of the month, blah, blah, blah.
- 2:40And I didn't get it.
- 2:42And I was.
- 2:45disappointed to say the least.
- 2:47And I quit my job.
- 2:49I quit working there.
- 2:50I remember talking to Carol, she was the manager.
- 2:53And she was like, why are you quitting your you're a good employee?
- 2:55And I was like, well, I didn't get employee of the month.
- 2:58And she's like, Jessie, you've only been here a month.
- 3:00And I say, yeah, I understand that.
- 3:01But my goal was to get employee of the month.
- 3:04And I didn't get it.
- 3:05So clearly my efforts aren't.
- 3:08Aren't appreciated or maybe at least misguided.
- 3:12Truth be told I ended up going back and working there again because I did enjoy working with the people.
- 3:16The work was fun.
- 3:17I found it fun anyways, but my point in that story is.
- 3:21You know, it puts so much effort into being employee of the month.
- 3:24And then when I think about all the other jobs I've had in my career, I put a lot of effort in to Helping my manager, my boss see the value that I could bring so that I could be.
- 3:37Uh, given a raise so that I could get all the magical stuff you get for being a team player in an A-plus worker.
- 3:44And then almost always being disappointed.
- 3:48By the outcome.
- 3:49And so that makes me think like, well, what was I really working for?
- 3:53Was I putting my energy towards like, yes, I was looking to advance in the company and expand my career.
- 3:58Yeah.
- 3:59But like, What I was really, really doing is I was seeking affirmation.
- 4:05From my manager.
- 4:08And only my manager could see my skills and my talents and the effort that I put in.
- 4:15And what's interesting because I've been a manager and I know how frustrating this is.
- 4:19it's not always in my boss's interest to promote me because.
- 4:25They may not have someone else to do the work that I was doing.
- 4:29And I was doing above and beyond.
- 4:32So.
- 4:34That created a big gap for them to, to backfill.
- 4:37Which makes it easy.
- 4:40For them to kind of downplay all my contributions to the team and to the company so that I can stay there and make their job easier.
- 4:47I'm not accusing them.
- 4:48I know that I have felt that with people, I didn't give into it, but I did feel like son of a gun.
- 4:54If I promote you and you go to this other department.
- 4:57I got to replace you.
- 4:58And that's a lot of work on my part.
- 5:00so I think that's a natural thing now.
- 5:02The interesting thing is.
- 5:05In my experience since I got super active and visible on, on all the socials out there, I feel like by doing so as my value.
- 5:15Increased.
- 5:17In the industry, or on the omniverse, my value within the organization also increased.
- 5:24And so I had to ask myself, why is that?
- 5:26And I said, well, maybe it's because now all of a sudden I'm not hitting.
- 5:33Under my department heads umbrella.
- 5:36Right.
- 5:37Like, I don't have to just count.
- 5:39On one person to advocate for me.
- 5:42Now I'm advocating for myself.
- 5:45By letting people know where I come from, what my thinking is, what I believe in what I support.
- 5:52And that gets recognition.
- 5:54Almost accidentally, like, well, maybe not even, almost like for real, for real, I wasn't doing it.
- 5:59Like I didn't start the podcast for that reason.
- 6:02But I believe that that actually happened.
- 6:06And along that path of, you know, Sharing my thoughts doing the interviews, et cetera, all the posts that I put out there.
- 6:13What started happening is I started having impact or at least the ideas that I was sharing.
- 6:19And the conversations that were being shared were impactful for other human beings.
- 6:24And so I started contributing value to them.
- 6:27And somehow along the way I promise I didn't do it on purpose.
- 6:31Um, I started shifting my energy, meaning.
- 6:34I didn't focus my energy on getting affirmation from my boss or my manager anymore.
- 6:40I focus my energy on getting impact on delivering impact on having an impact on people's lives.
- 6:48People's thinking.
- 6:49Uh, improving the quality of life to some degree.
- 6:52For, for anybody who would listen.
- 6:54And the result of that.
- 6:57Has been spectacularly.
- 7:00Amazing.
- 7:01Now, back to the, like the energy required to get an idea and take it from some crazy wild aspiration and actually turn it into something real.
- 7:12That takes a tremendous amount of energy, um, because there is a lot of friction.
- 7:16There's the friction of practical thinking, meaning why are you doing this?
- 7:20Nobody's paying you for it.
- 7:22there's the friction of failure and embarrassment.
- 7:25There's the friction of still having a job and trying to do this other new thing.
- 7:28Like.
- 7:29But the energy to continue forward.
- 7:32I believe has come from the impact that I've had or that we all can have.
- 7:39In sharing our gifts and talents with other people.
- 7:42I think that's the most important thing here.
- 7:45At least, I think that's what I'm seeing.
- 7:48Is when we focus our energy on chasing affirmation from one person within the organization from, or maybe, maybe a little broader from our very localized community, like the people that are in our neighborhood, in our life.
- 8:02And.
- 8:03And our companies.
- 8:04The yield from all of that effort is.
- 8:08Almost predictable.
- 8:10And much smaller.
- 8:11Then the yield of focus on our focusing our energy on having impact in serving others.
- 8:18And being able to witness the impact of our efforts.
- 8:22Fuels us with this whole new source of energy to continue working through the friction.
- 8:28Required to get ideas into action.
- 8:33And so I'm wondering, y'all like, I'm wondering, does this resonate with you at all?
- 8:38Have you ever spent all your time?
- 8:41Or have you ever put in a whole ton of energy to get that promotion, to get that raise, uh, to get that special, sexy project?
- 8:49And then you don't get it.
- 8:51Uh, and then you see other people promote, you see other people advancing and you're like, what the hell?
- 8:55Like I know I'm out performing them fools.
- 8:58And are you really just counting on that one person?
- 9:03To be your advocate when you can advocate for yourself.
- 9:08I know that sounds a little selfish, but think of, if you think of it, in terms of sharing your gifts and talents.
- 9:14Uh, for the purpose of serving others, that's a whole new ball game.
- 9:19And if you didn't know, we do have a learnings and missteps blog out there.
- 9:24So if you're interested in reading, I'll make sure that the, the link.
- 9:28To that blog is in the show notes.
