Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:16media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to mini scroll
- 0:20everyone. All right, let's just get into
- 0:22the stories for today. So the first word that I have
- 0:25for you guys is I need to talk about the hub's life, quote UN
- 0:30quote rug pull that all of his followers are calling it.
- 0:34So Connor Hubbard, AKA Hub's life is a content creator who
- 0:38built a following of nearly 1,000,000 on TikTok by
- 0:41documenting his quote UN quote normal life.
- 0:44His mantra online was, quote, I'm showing how happy and
- 0:47successful you can be having a normal life, working a normal
- 0:50job as a senior analyst at a Fortune 500 company.
- 0:54His content was largely vlogs of his days at his nine to five and
- 0:58his mornings or his evenings at home with his wife and his dog.
- 1:01Recently, however, Connor quit this 9:00 to 5:00 to pursue
- 1:05TikTok full time. And now there has been so much
- 1:08discussion about how he's fallen off.
- 1:10And this was really exacerbated when he did a TikTok live over
- 1:14the weekend. And his followers are actually
- 1:17so mad about this whole scenario that they are calling the hub's
- 1:20life rug pull. The Hub's life fall off needs to
- 1:23be studied. Now.
- 1:24We all know the Hub's life left his nine to five to pursue his
- 1:26dreams, but that has changed very quickly.
- 1:28He was just on live the other night and he was basically
- 1:30begging for galaxies to be donated to him and he took it so
- 1:34far as he wouldn't answer questions until someone donated
- 1:36a whole Galaxy. I got to get a Galaxy guys if I
- 1:39if you want me to answer the tough questions.
- 1:41Now galaxies are basically TikTok Live's currency and one
- 1:45Galaxy apparently equals about $20 like USD on a USD.
- 1:50So people are making fun of this saying it's giving the same
- 1:53energy as Jason Nash last year when he was begging on TikTok
- 1:57Live for money. I do want to note that later
- 1:59Connor claimed in comments that he was donating all of the money
- 2:03that he made to the Texas floods.
- 2:05Regardless, this has people talking about creators quitting
- 2:08their jobs to pursue social media and who and who does not
- 2:12succeed and why. OK, so I think personally, two
- 2:15things kind of went wrong for Hub's life.
- 2:18First, he built his entire platform off of being a normal
- 2:23guy, working a normal job with a normal life.
- 2:26That was literally like his entire purpose on the app and it
- 2:29was the reason why people followed him.
- 2:31And it was almost like a nice break from so much of the other
- 2:34type of lifestyle content that we see online, right?
- 2:37Like a lot of lifestyle creators are very aspirational.
- 2:41And it's not that he's not aspirational, but he was just so
- 2:44quote UN quote regular. He's also a guy, you know,
- 2:47there's countless content creators who share kind of the
- 2:51mundane parts of their lives, working in corporate, working in
- 2:54nine to five, working various jobs.
- 2:57And there's certainly not as many men who are documenting
- 3:00their lives and doing like day in my life content in general.
- 3:04So I think for a lot of men, he represented something different
- 3:07than what they often are presented with on social media.
- 3:10And if you think about the lifestyle content that men are
- 3:12often presented with, Connor must have felt like such a
- 3:15breath of fresh air. And now that he is no longer
- 3:19working in corporate, the bulk of his content is like day in
- 3:22the life as a full time content creator.
- 3:24And that's just not as interesting.
- 3:27First of all, we know what that looks like.
- 3:29Enough tick tokers, enough Youtubers have done content like
- 3:32that for years. It's not relatable anymore,
- 3:35obviously. And, you know, we don't need to
- 3:38be seeing all of this kind of like unattainable, aspirational
- 3:41content anymore. There's so much of it out there.
- 3:44Like the thing that set Connor apart was that his whole thing
- 3:47was like, just look at my very regular life.
- 3:51And then #2 he didn't build enough of a parasocial
- 3:54relationship with his audience for them to want to stay
- 3:57invested in him as a person. He barely speaks in his videos.
- 4:01People don't really know much about him.
- 4:03And the style of content that he created, while obviously very
- 4:06successful, it was not about building a connection with his
- 4:10followers. So those people aren't going to,
- 4:12you know, like, go along for the ride and be excited for him with
- 4:15this new direction because they followed him for a very specific
- 4:20type of content, not because they were invested in him as a
- 4:23person. And if he's no longer making
- 4:25that content, then they're no longer invested.
- 4:28All of this has come to such a head that Connor has actually
- 4:31had to turn his tick tock comments off, which is
- 4:34unfortunate. Like it is unfortunate that he
- 4:37quit his job to pursue something that like, who wouldn't take
- 4:40this opportunity? Of course, like so many people
- 4:42would take this opportunity to be a full time tik Toker, a full
- 4:45time content creator, if they were making enough money to do
- 4:47so. You can control your own
- 4:49schedule, your own work, like all of that, of course.
- 4:51But he's received so much backlash for this and it's gone
- 4:55so poorly that he's had to turn off his comments.
- 4:58That being said, I've seen so many people say like, why did he
- 5:02not just continue to fake that he has a nine to five?
- 5:06Or why did he not keep his 9:00 to 5:00 And then just like keep
- 5:10working at this as like the most successful side hustle ever and
- 5:14start transitioning his content into like building this very
- 5:18successful, lucrative side hustle.
- 5:20And then maybe he would have built more of a following around
- 5:23that. And then he could have
- 5:24transitioned his content from like, you know, I work a nine to
- 5:28five as a regular dude to now I'm a full time tik toker.
- 5:31Like that's not very regular. It's definitely a bit of a
- 5:34cautionary tale on how you build your personal brand and what
- 5:38you're putting out into the world.
- 5:39And you know, just just realizing that what you're
- 5:42putting out there is what and like you building a following
- 5:45off of that. That's what people want to see.
- 5:47If you change that, it might not go over well.
- 5:50All right, the next word that I have for you guys.
- 5:52I can't, I can't. Zac Bryan and Brianna Chicken
- 5:57Fry are posting their text messages on Instagram stories as
- 6:02like receipts around the breakup.
- 6:04I thought we were done speaking about these two feuding, but Zac
- 6:08Ryan pulled a fast one on us yesterday.
- 6:10He posted and quickly deleted 2 screenshots of text messages
- 6:15from their breakup. I think trying to imply that the
- 6:18story that Brianna has been telling the world isn't totally
- 6:21accurate. If you want more of a recap on
- 6:23their feuding from last week, I have a couple episodes on it.
- 6:26OK so the first screenshot he posted was a long text message
- 6:30that Brianna sent him after he broke up with her.
- 6:33She said enjoy Oklahoma and know through this all I still have
- 6:37love for you and things would have ended a lot differently if
- 6:39it were up to me. I hope one day you can see past
- 6:42all the bullshit of your life and no, I was always in your
- 6:45corner. Finish off the last leg of your
- 6:46tour, strong like you always do. Enjoy Paris and wherever you end
- 6:50up. Just know I'll be wherever I end
- 6:52up. Wishing the best for you.
- 6:53If you ever need a family to lean on, mine will always be
- 6:56yours. Me not attached.
- 6:58I'll never forget the love I felt for you at one time in this
- 7:00life. Timing was wrong and you weren't
- 7:02ready and that's OK. Enjoy being a rock star.
- 7:05If you ever need a friend that gets it, I'll always be here.
- 7:08I never wanted the lifestyle or money attached to you.
- 7:11Just wanted to love someone I felt was worth loving.
- 7:14And I'll choose to believe you didn't mean all the things you
- 7:16said to me tonight. Even if you did, I want to leave
- 7:19this with love and love only on my end.
- 7:22That's all I wanted. And I do believe I deserved a
- 7:24goodbye. You knew you'd never see me
- 7:26again when you left. And so did I.
- 7:28And then she responds again. So are we just ending on that?
- 7:32So Zach had loved this message. OK.
- 7:34And then the next one he posted presumably a text from Brianna
- 7:39to, people think, his manager. What's interesting is this
- 7:43message was sent on October 27th.
- 7:45OK, The one to the manager, The message before this, we don't
- 7:49know. There's no date on the big
- 7:51message, however. So are we just ending on that?
- 7:54Was sent on October 29th. They were already in
- 7:57negotiations about how they were going to publicly handle the
- 7:59break up and then she still messaged him saying like so are
- 8:02we just going to end like that? OK so this is what the message
- 8:05says where I'm at option A 12 million.
- 8:08I say nothing about him. Just say yeah we broke up.
- 8:10I really want to move on and heal.
- 8:12Option B Duxbury House which is their home that I think he
- 8:16bought them in Boston. I essentially take the High
- 8:19Road, talk about the ending, won't talk about the non public
- 8:22cheating. There is a lot throughout our
- 8:23whole entire relationship I'm finding out about.
- 8:27Won't talk about him being a narcissist.
- 8:29Just say he did me a favor. I'm happy I got out and I wish
- 8:32him the best. Let him be a lesson learned.
- 8:34Can guarantee the Grace recording never gets talked
- 8:37about. That is the bonfire recording.
- 8:39I think that when she says the Grace recording, I think Grace
- 8:43when Brianna went to bed at her birthday and they were around
- 8:46the bonfire. Grace must have recorded him
- 8:48being vile. I have no control over Josh and
- 8:51Dave. As in her BFF's barstool Co
- 8:54hosts. They really hate him but I will
- 8:56not feed into any of it. They are on their own.
- 8:59They have no insider information from me so everything they ever
- 9:02say would be already public knowledge.
- 9:04Option C Essentially a messy war.
- 9:07I arrowed everything I experienced and don't hold back.
- 9:10So he posted these and quickly delete it and then Brianna
- 9:15responded on her Instagram stories and said boy is blackout
- 9:18at 7:00 AM again. Shocker.
- 9:20And then she posted screenshots of his manager sending her the
- 9:25NDA option. She said I rest my case.
- 9:27His manager texting me their options for NDA and it says a
- 9:32Duxbury house plus 3 million or $10 million payment terms would
- 9:36be say nothing about Zach XYZ. All the things that she's
- 9:39already said. She says I have not told one lie
- 9:42ever. And it's baffling to me the
- 9:44brain dead little army of of men that so clearly abused women too
- 9:47that blindly follow their little leader because he makes songs
- 9:50for them about being bad boys lol.
- 9:52And then she kind of answers some of the questions she says
- 9:55I'm finally happy and free of the hold he had on me and I will
- 9:58not be giving an open invitation to that dark cloud back into my
- 10:01life. I was offered $12.9 million to
- 10:04stay quiet. I was presented options and what
- 10:06I could choose. I chose none because I have
- 10:09morals. End of story.
- 10:10So I didn't read Zach's screenshots as damaging for
- 10:13Brianna at all. But unfortunately, I fear that
- 10:16it is kind of shifting the narrative because Reddit TikTok
- 10:20comments just like everywhere is filled with people being like,
- 10:24Oh my God, this proves Brianna blackmailed him.
- 10:27This proves Brianna's been lying about how horrible he was to
- 10:31her. She sent him this nice message
- 10:32when they broke up. You know, obviously it wasn't
- 10:35that bad. Whatever.
- 10:36I feel like anyone that's not believing her and that is like
- 10:39looking at these text messages and thinking, Oh yeah, this
- 10:41proves everything. They have either a never been in
- 10:45an abusive relationship themselves, an emotionally
- 10:47manipulative relationship themselves, they've never seen a
- 10:50friend go through that, they've never learned the warning signs
- 10:53of that, or how women might react in those situations.
- 10:56Like I feel like this is just standard shit.
- 10:59Like just because you were in a really toxic abusive
- 11:03relationship doesn't mean that when the relationship ends
- 11:07that's easier for you. Sometimes it's harder because
- 11:09you have this like weird traumatic bond with this person.
- 11:12I wholeheartedly disagree that the message he showed us proves
- 11:17that she asked for $12 million unprompted.
- 11:21I think it just proves that she considered all of her options
- 11:24and like, wouldn't you, if somebody was offering you $12
- 11:27million for essentially all she had to do was just say like,
- 11:32yeah, we broke up and move on? Like, would you not consider
- 11:35that? Of course you would.
- 11:37Who would not consider a $12 million payout for something
- 11:40like that? I probably said this last week
- 11:42that I don't think we'll ever talk about them again.
- 11:44But I actually think this is the end.
- 11:46I actually, I something inside me tells me this is the end.
- 11:50Zac Ryan and Brown Chicken Fry will stop feuding.
- 11:53We will stop talking about them as a couple, their breakup, all
- 11:57of that. We can only hope, OK?
- 12:00And the last word that I have for you guys, this is crazy, OK?
- 12:04The creator behind the Sylvania drama TikTok account is being
- 12:08sued by the company that makes the toys.
- 12:12Irish creator Theavon Engelbrechen has been sued by
- 12:15Japanese toy company Epoch Epoch.
- 12:18Epoch. I'm sorry I don't know how to
- 12:22say that for using their dolls. Sylvanian families in her TikTok
- 12:26account. Sia is a 23 year old creator of
- 12:29the wildly popular sylvanian drama account on TikTok where
- 12:33she creates essentially like dark comedy skits with the
- 12:36dolls. Her account reached 2.5 million
- 12:38followers and has done brand deals with huge commercial
- 12:41partners like Marc Jacobs, Netflix, like so many in 2023,
- 12:46the tab in the UK actually interviewed her and she said,
- 12:49quote, the Sylvanians remind me of Desperate Housewives because
- 12:52they all looked really perfect. I'm still surprised that people
- 12:55even watch the videos because they're so stupid.
- 12:57Usually I don't make up the script, I just do it as I go
- 13:00along and see what happens. I'm surprised I'm not already
- 13:03cancelled, but I don't mean any harm.
- 13:05I joke about the problems in my own life.
- 13:07There's a lot of stuff about weight and dieting and that's
- 13:10just like me. If there's a joke in there
- 13:12that's bad, it's probably about myself.
- 13:14So in April, the toy company that owns Sylvanian Families
- 13:17filed A copyright infringement lawsuit against Thea.
- 13:21They filed it in the US even and though they're a Japanese
- 13:23company and she is in Ireland so I don't know how that works, but
- 13:28they filed it in the US for her using their dolls without their
- 13:31permission. OK.
- 13:32This is directly from kfmradio.com.
- 13:35The company claims the videos, some of which reference drugs
- 13:38and violence, could harm its brand and mislead viewers into
- 13:42thinking they were endorsed by the company.
- 13:44AUS Court, according to the Irish Independent, has extended
- 13:48her deadline to respond to the lawsuit to August 8th with a
- 13:51pretrial conference for August 14th.
- 13:54Epoch or Epoch or whatever, I'm Sorry, is seeking to stop the
- 13:57use of its stalls, citing copyright infringement and false
- 14:01endorsements. It's also seeking damages.
- 14:04Oh my God, you guys. I'm so sad for her.
- 14:06Like nothing is worse than legal issues.
- 14:10Nothing is worse than being like an individual sued by a
- 14:13corporation. Like actually it is so scary and
- 14:16traumatizing. And I understand from the
- 14:19corporate perspective, they don't want their dolls
- 14:21associated with that content. Like like I said, it is dark
- 14:25comedy. And there is no disclaimer on
- 14:27her TikTok account or as far as I know, the Instagram account
- 14:30either that says like, we are not associated with Sylvanian
- 14:34families. So maybe if she had that
- 14:37disclaimer somewhere, if it was made clear in every single video
- 14:40or something, maybe it would be a bit different.
- 14:42Like I understand. However, I also feel like they
- 14:46can probably trace back such a huge chunk of their recent sales
- 14:52to her making these dolls relevant online and giving them
- 14:56like a chronically online life. Like they obviously don't want
- 15:00her making money from their IP. And I bet you if she wasn't
- 15:03doing commercial opportunities, like if she didn't have brand
- 15:05deals and stuff, then maybe they wouldn't be suing her.
- 15:09I feel like they just want to be able to capitalize on this and
- 15:13make their own money from this because it's such a cultural
- 15:15phenomenon now. But I can tell you, I had never
- 15:18even heard of the Sylvanian families before the Sylvanian
- 15:22drama TikTok account. And now I've purchased them.
- 15:25I use them in memes all the time.
- 15:28They're like culturally relevant for me now.
- 15:30Like the brand awareness that she has given them and like this
- 15:33new life that she has kind of breathed into them.
- 15:36Like I said, she's brought them into like the chronically online
- 15:39zeitgeist in a way that like truly a brand can only dream of
- 15:42because it happened organically. I'm so sad for her.
- 15:46Like, I can't believe this. And maybe if she hadn't used the
- 15:49name Sylvanian, like maybe if she just, I don't know, called
- 15:52it something else. Like I, I do feel like there
- 15:54were a few things here that maybe she could have done
- 15:57differently. However, like when she started
- 15:59this account, she was like 20 I think, or 19, like she's only
- 16:0223. I don't know.
- 16:04I feel so bad for her. This must be very scary.
- 16:06I'm obsessed with the Sylvanian drama account.
- 16:09Like I will be so devastated if she has to take down this
- 16:14account. Anyways guys, that's it for Mini
- 16:16scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 16:18I love you guys. Please remember to rate review
- 16:20and subscribe. Annabelle will talk to you guys
- 16:22tomorrow and then I will talk to you on Thursday.
- 16:24Bye.
