- 0:00All right, guys, back for another episode. Trump,
- 0:04the art of the deal. Trump cards, the elements
- 0:07of the deal. Use your leverage, Trump says. The
- 0:11worst thing you can possibly do in a deal is
- 0:14seem desperate to make it. That makes the other
- 0:17guy smell blood and then you're dead. The best
- 0:20thing you can do is deal from strength and leverage
- 0:23is the biggest strength you can have. leverage
- 0:26is having something the other guy wants or better
- 0:29yet needs or best of all simply can't do without.
- 0:34Unfortunately that isn't always the case which
- 0:37is why leverage often requires imagination and
- 0:41salesmanship. In other words you have to convince
- 0:45the other guy it's in his interest to make the
- 0:48deal. Trevor's going to then list three examples
- 0:52of how he used leverage to get his way in deals.
- 0:57The first one is with the Commodore Hotel on
- 1:00East 42nd Street. He was trying to get city approval.
- 1:05And in order to get it, what he did is he convinced
- 1:10the owners of the hotel to go public with the
- 1:13fact that they were planning to close down the
- 1:15hotel. Once they went public with that information,
- 1:18Trump made sure to tell everyone in the city
- 1:20what a disaster it would be to have a boarded
- 1:23up hotel in the Grand Central area. So that pressured
- 1:27eventually the city officials to realize it wouldn't
- 1:32look good for the city to have a closed hotel
- 1:34in that area. And that helped him eventually
- 1:38get the approvals to take over that project.
- 1:44Same thing in Atlantic City for the holidays
- 1:48in. They wanted to basically to be established
- 1:55in the gaming industry. And they were attracted
- 1:59to Trump's site because they believed his construction
- 2:02was farther along than that of any other potential
- 2:05partner. Trump says. In reality, I wasn't that
- 2:09far along, but I did everything I could short
- 2:11of going to work at the site myself to assure
- 2:14them that my casino was practically finished.
- 2:17My leverage came from confirming an impression
- 2:20they were already predisposed to believe. So
- 2:23Trump made sure that in the headlines, in the
- 2:27looks of it, and he did everything he could to
- 2:32confirm. And to further the impression and eventually
- 2:38the reality that his site was the most ready
- 2:42site for a partnership. And that's how Holiday
- 2:46Inn chose to go on a partnership with him there.
- 2:50Finally, the third example is on the west side
- 2:53of rail yards. So at the time of this book publication,
- 2:58NBC, the TV network in the U .S. There were talks
- 3:05that they were going to leave the city of New
- 3:07York to go to New Jersey. Yeah, they were going
- 3:10to change their headquarters. And Trump had bought
- 3:14land near the Hudson Yards in the west side of
- 3:23Manhattan. He named the project Television City.
- 3:27And the reason he named it Television City was
- 3:31kind of to force the impression that this is
- 3:34where NBC should go to. So basically, he designed
- 3:43the optics of all these three deals for the Commodore
- 3:48Hotel or with the holidays and with NBC to be
- 3:54the likely. winner of the bid, right? So in all
- 4:01these cases, Trump used leverage. And it's worth
- 4:08repeating his definition of leverage here. Leverage
- 4:14is having something the other guy wants or better
- 4:16yet needs or best of all, simply can't do without.
- 4:20Unfortunately, this isn't always the case, which
- 4:22is why leverage often requires imagination and
- 4:25salesmanship. In other words, you have to convince
- 4:28the other guy it's in his interest to make the
- 4:30deal. So this is something Trump used throughout
- 4:35his career. And this is something that we can
- 4:39walk away with. Leverage. Don't make deals without
- 4:43it. And we can either find the obvious point
- 4:49of leverage or use imagination and salesmanship.
- 4:53Of course, knowing we always want. to work for
- 4:56win -win outcomes. This is what Trump used to
- 4:59stand out in these three different deals that
- 5:02helped his career take off. Hope you enjoyed
- 5:06this one and see you for the next one. Thank
- 5:08you.
