- 2:36Bridge Valley. How are you? Good morning, Good morning, I'm terrific.
- 2:38How are you today? I'm doing fine? Thanks for being here.
- 2:40Oh my gosh, it's my pleasure. What an honor? Well, I
- 2:45don't know about that, Chris. Would you consider this an honor to be
- 2:46a on the show. Let's ask her in an hour, Yeah, yeah,
- 2:51Coch get with me at ten oh three and we will talk about what
- 2:53kind of an honor this is. We're going to get to know doctor Sachs
- 2:55personally, but we're also going to get to know by some things, some
- 2:58exciting things going on at Bridge Valley. Plus you get to play ten questions?
- 3:01Are you excited about ten questions? Excited? All right, Chris?
- 3:06I can never get Chris to play ten questions because I don't know what his
- 3:07answers are going to be shy. Yes, he's very, very shy.
- 3:12He's nothing if not shy, Chris. Tonight we got a good one the
- 3:15WCCHS Network Game of the Week. You're heading down to one nineteen for what
- 3:20promises to be a fantastic contest between Winfield and Scott. Talking about it before
- 3:24we get to that. Yeah, may I just tell you congratulations for what
- 3:30I've been on the radio here for thirty three years. I have a show
- 3:35on Saturday morning. I'm here every morning doing the morning news. I've done
- 3:38a lot of things on the radio. I've been inducted into the Broadcasting Hall
- 3:43of Fame. I've never had a show named after me. Oh you're arrived,
- 3:47dude, that's pretty cool. Well, I appreciate it's the Dave Allen
- 3:51Show. It is the day on the Dave Allen Show. You are and
- 3:53you know you're the reason I'm here. Yeah, people keep throwing that up
- 3:59to me here there, Chris is just to let you know, doctor Sachs,
- 4:02Danny Jones fromer Mayor of Charleston, good friend of mine, who's,
- 4:04by the way, going to be on talk Line today. Danny Terry.
- 4:09Yes, yes, Danny was the host of the show and the then Danny
- 4:15stepped away from the show and they needed a host, and Chris, you
- 4:17know, just kind of said hey, as a joke. I think he
- 4:19said you should come host this show. And three years later here so it's
- 4:24your full holds for credit here. He's a talent scout. He's a scout.
- 4:29I don't know how much talent he got out of it. But let's
- 4:31talk about this game tonight, Chris, Scott and Winfield. It's gonna be
- 4:34a good one. Yeah, it should be. And it is the de
- 4:36facto, well it's not the de facto. It is the championship game for
- 4:40the Cardinal Conference tonight because both teams. Scott comes into this eight no,
- 4:46Winfield is seven to one. The only loss they had was that first game
- 4:49against Hurricane, and of course we have seen over the course of time that
- 4:53Hurricane's pretty good too, So that's that's not a loss that has really affected
- 4:57them. They've done nothing but just methodically win all the way through. So
- 5:00this should be a great matchup. In the last ten years, Winfield has
- 5:03won this game nine out of the last ten years, including last year,
- 5:09which also was for the Cardinal Conference Championship. It was played last year in
- 5:13Winfield. Tonight will be at scott Field, or maybe it's called Skyhawk Field.
- 5:16I'll have to check that. In Madison, which I have been to
- 5:19one time, but I've never broadcast a game there, So I'm looking forward
- 5:23to going down to visit the folks in Boone County night. And this scott
- 5:26Skyhawk team is for real, Chris. I mean they are. They're a
- 5:30power high talk about a balanced attack, and it all starts with their quarterback,
- 5:32Matt Frye. He has thrown for more than twenty five hundred yards.
- 5:39He's got one receiver that's got nine hundred and ninety seven yards, and one
- 5:43of their running backs. Lest you think they're just a running team, one
- 5:46of the running backs has got like nine hundred and eighty rushing yards. So
- 5:51they're a very balanced team and they execute a lot, so I expect a
- 5:56lot of points will be scored Winfields is very good though, at stifling things
- 6:01like that, slowing teams down, and I guarantee you the game plan going
- 6:05in there will be hog the ball two or three yards at a time,
- 6:10keep getting first downs, keep running that clock, and limit Scott's possessions,
- 6:14and if you can ultimately end it with a touchdown, that's how you beat
- 6:17this team. And Winfield has done that very well with a lot of high
- 6:20powered teams this week or this year, so I look for them to try
- 6:25and execute that same game plan tonight. We'll be on the air at seven
- 6:27o'clock with the pregame show and then the kickoff is at seven point thirty and
- 6:31if you want, you to listen on the air or we stream it live
- 6:34at wcchsnetwork dot com plus. And this is a feature they just added a
- 6:40few weeks ago that I haven't said much about. They're now posting the games
- 6:44the next morning or that night on the WCCHS network page, so you can
- 6:49go download the game and listen to it again. If you have them to
- 6:53be at the game and wanted to hear the call of it, you can
- 6:55do that. That's always a big feature too, because sometimes the mom's dad's
- 6:59coach or whatever. I want to go back and listen to what did you
- 7:00say about about my kid? That's all a moore so that you know they
- 7:05would like to have it down the road. I mean, if your kid
- 7:09has a fantastic night, that's something you can download now and have it forever
- 7:14and unlus you have the call to Chris Lawrence and Matt Murphy and Jered Lewis
- 7:17on it tap. Actually Jarrett is in Indiana this week. Okay, so
- 7:20Tom bragg is, Oh, Tom, Tom does a fantastic job. Tom
- 7:24will do a great job. He always does. After the game, Fred
- 7:27and Dave of course in the cast of thousands with me. What do you
- 7:30get on outdoors today tomorrow morning. Well, we have talked about this before.
- 7:32West Virginia, for the third time in history, will produce the national
- 7:36Christmas Tree that'll be put up on the on Capitol Hill this year. They
- 7:42always pick a tree from the National Force somewhere in the United States. This
- 7:46is the third time it's come from the Monongahala National Forest, and just this
- 7:49week the Forest Service announced who they have selected to cut down the tree to
- 7:55harvest it. Arden Koger is one of them and a long time, a
- 7:59lesser known name, a guy who's been with the Forest Service for fifty years.
- 8:03So those two guys have been selected to cut down this tree that'll be
- 8:07paraded around West Virginia before they take it to DC. Don't of those guys
- 8:11from West Virginia. Yes, that's what an honor. Yeah, that's wondering
- 8:13exactly. It's a huge honor. In fact, Arden's dad, I think
- 8:18I got this right. I'll ask him tomorrow. Arden's dad, Arden Koger
- 8:20Senior, he cut down the first one in nineteen seventy three, I think
- 8:26was the first Wow tree at the time. They did this, and he
- 8:28and his dad had the honor of cutting down that tree. So he gets
- 8:31the honor. I wonder if he's gonna do it with the knacks. We
- 8:33should all drive out and visit the tree. Well, you're not going to
- 8:37drive to it, you're d oh, well, yeah, you can see
- 8:41it there, But I mean, if you want to go see it cut
- 8:41down, he was in the middle of nowhere. Well that sounds really good.
- 8:46Doctor Sachs is originally from Colorado, and so she's always wanted to get
- 8:48back to the outdoors. Right. I love the outdoor well, there's your
- 8:52guy right there. That is very cool. Yes, if you're from Colorado,
- 8:56you and I could have a long, long conversation. I should have
- 8:58you on the show. Yeah yeah, well I'll just leave. But all
- 9:01right, one other thing I wanted to make yeh too on the show tomorrow.
- 9:05The Meta Creek Trail. We're getting to in West Virginia. We're starting
- 9:09to see how, how really, what a great fit these rails to trails
- 9:13are. The Meta Creek Trail is now open and they're continuing to build on
- 9:16it. We'll talk to some folks that are in the process of developing that
- 9:20tomorrow as well. All right, and it's on tomorrow's seven to six.
- 9:22Chris, I appreciate it, man, thanks a lot. All right,
- 9:24buddy, it's Chris Lawrence, mister Outdoors here, and of course they'll be
- 9:28on the air again tonight with the Game of the Week. It's going to
- 9:31be a fantastic contest between Winfield and Scott. And then catch Chris tomorrow morning
- 9:35seven to six with his outdoors program. West Virginia. You apparently start calling
- 9:39the Chris Lawrence Show. Apparently we did. No, we don't need to
- 9:43do that. Let's bring in Hannah Gardner from the Keneala Chosty, Maine Association
- 9:48with our adoptmy Please pet of the weekend. But good morning, how are
- 9:52you? I'm great? How are you? I'm doing fine? HANDA.
- 9:54This is doctor Casey Sachs of Bridge Valley. This is our good friend and
- 9:58star Hannah Pardner from the Canal Trosumine Association. Good morning, Hannah, good
- 10:03morning. We've got Zeus is our dog of the week. Uh. Picture
- 10:09posted as always Dave Allen Radio and Facebook at the Dave Allen Show on x
- 10:13The artist really known as Twitter. Tell us about Zeus, Hannah, all
- 10:18Right, So Zeus. He is a handsome man, and I know that
- 10:24you always post pictures of him, so go look at him. He reminds
- 10:28me of Scooby Doo in the way with turky ears instead of well, I
- 10:35guess he does have turkey years too. But he is six already. He's
- 10:41about seven years old. He's considered a senior dog, so his adoption see
- 10:46would be a little lower than our just regular adult dogs. He would just
- 10:50be fifty for the adoption see. And like I said, he's already six,
- 10:56and he's vaccinated, he's got his microchips. All of the animals that
- 11:00come in they get microchips and vaccinated as soon as they come in, you
- 11:03know, depending on their behavior when they first come in. A lot of
- 11:07animals are scared when they come in. But he is a good dog.
- 11:11He walks amazing on the leash. He definitely likes to go un walks.
- 11:16He likes to play, but he's a lot more laid back as well.
- 11:20He will chill out on the couch with you. I know. I had
- 11:24him out yesterday in the playyard all by himself, and he would run around
- 11:28for a minute, but then he would get up on the little stair thing
- 11:31and he would just lay there and watch everybody walk back. That sounds like
- 11:33me. Two minutes of some sort of exertion and about twenty minutes of lying
- 11:39down afterwards. It sounds like my perfect dog. What kind of dog is
- 11:45is Zeus? I have no idea. He came in I believe as a
- 11:52stray to us. But he he's got like these perky ears. If I
- 11:58had to guess, I would say maybe he's got some like pity or some
- 12:05kind of bully dog in it. I would say, like a boxer,
- 12:07German shepherd mix. I was gonna say, but he does have like the
- 12:13colors of a shepherd or something. He's a tough one. He's a tough
- 12:18one to go. Yeah, now that's reason I want to ask doctor because
- 12:20I know that she's a dog person. So I mean, it's a beautiful
- 12:22dog. And again you can see the pictures posted on my social media.
- 12:26Now, Zeus you said does walk very well on a leash. Uh,
- 12:31but prefers to be around female dogs. Is that what you told me?
- 12:35Yes, so he does prefer more calmer dog. Yeah, calm female dogs,
- 12:41you know, Hannah Bridge, the Bridge Valley Foundation would love to sponsor
- 12:45Zeus's adoption fee. So if that's something we could do, we would love
- 12:48to make sure he gets a good home. Oh my gosh, yes,
- 12:52yes, yes, Dave can give you my contact information and then we can
- 12:56set all that up. All right, there you go. So Zeus is
- 12:58going to be free now courtesy the Bridge Valley Foundation. How cool Islese?
- 13:01Somebody go adopt this guy. He looks like such a love. Yeah,
- 13:05he needs a good home, beautiful beautiful dogs. Now, Hannah, you
- 13:09guys are going to be out and about tomorrow with the folks at dutch Miller
- 13:13Super Rue nineteen oh one Patrick Street and Charleston for their fifth annual how Oween
- 13:18event. It's happening noon before West Virginia's own Emmy Davis is going to be
- 13:22performing. They're doing a trunk retreat for kids, a food truck provided by
- 13:26Underprivileged Children Foundation. More is available on that on your social media pages.
- 13:31But hats off to those folks at Dutch Miller for sponsoring that tomorrow. Yes,
- 13:35yes, we will be there tomorrow. We will have lots of dogs,
- 13:39lots of puppies, maybe even and I'm sure that we will probably even
- 13:45have some chit ends if we have any, or some cats if we can
- 13:48take them. We trust we do our best with the cats because the cats
- 13:52do get a lot more stress than the dogs and the puppies. But yes,
- 13:56we will be out there, come see us. We have adoption as
- 14:00well as they will be sponsored, and there's going to be a lot for
- 14:03the kids as well. All right, good and again, that's happening noon
- 14:05to four tomorrow at Dutch Miller on Patrick Street. What are you folks in
- 14:09need of at the shelter right now? Of course, we're always in need
- 14:15of blankets. Cows. If you have any old stuff in your attic or
- 14:20upstairs or whatever, we will take it. I know that we don't really
- 14:26use big, big pillows often, so we try to avoid taking those in
- 14:31because a lot of the dogs just shred them and stuff and we don't want
- 14:33them to do that. So like blankets, cowels. I know that we
- 14:37could use some wet food for the dogs as well, So we have a
- 14:45wish list as well on our website. If you want to look at that,
- 14:48it'll be under the donate section, and then I'll say wish list.
- 14:50We have a whole list of things that we could use. Dog collars,
- 14:54dog treats, all kinds of stuff, all right to get It's all available
- 14:58on your website. Best of luck with your event that you're doing tomorrow.
- 15:01By the way, somebody sent me a nice little graphic here, and I
- 15:05will try to maybe we'll get into this next week, because right, you
- 15:07know, these temperatures have been fantastic, you know, in the seventies and
- 15:09eighties, but Hannah, by next week temperatures are going to be in the
- 15:13forties for high They say we could even have some snow flurries, flurries not
- 15:16you know, we're not going to cancel school or anything, but some snow
- 15:18flurries next week. But somebody sent me a nice little graphic here about things
- 15:22to do for winter safety for outdoor cats, and maybe remind me, Hannah.
- 15:26We'll try to get into that next week. I do have a question
- 15:30for you, somebody who Hannah gets more text and fan mail than I do,
- 15:33just just so you know, is good work. Text says, can
- 15:37the shelter use area or throw rugs. Yes, we do take this.
- 15:43We don't need like the really really big ones, but if you have some
- 15:46small ones like little bath maps or little bathrugs, are like little ones like
- 15:50that, we will take those. We use those sometimes for the kennels and
- 15:54sometimes we use them for recovery and surgery. So yes, we will take
- 15:58those. And that's the you know something to people that are animal lovers,
- 16:02and you know you can't adopt them all, but there are things that you
- 16:03can do to help out the shelters of this one or any of them that
- 16:07don't necessarily always involve adopting. I mean, you can just help out with
- 16:11things like that, and they do need things like that. It's not just
- 16:14the food and litter and so they get other things dog food obviously, right
- 16:18Hannah, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, all right, Hannah.
- 16:22I appreciate good luck with yourvent tomorrow, Dutch Miller, we'll talk soon.
- 16:23Thanks a lot, Thank you. I go over to Dave Allen Radio on
- 16:29Facebook or the Dave Allen Show on x check out the picture of Zeus seven
- 16:33years old, neutered, vaccinateed microchip and courtesy of the folks at the Bridge
- 16:36Valley Foundation. Doctor Sacks just announced the sponsorship or the adoption fees, I
- 16:41should say, will be taken care of, and doctor Sacks, I'll get
- 16:45you Hannah's information, and so that's going to be taken care of. We're
- 16:48excited to find at home. Zeus prefers female calmer dogs as friends, but
- 16:52it does great on a leash, would be great probably with older kids,
- 16:56because you know, it kind of gets to get older, you get cranky.
- 17:00Yeah, that's what they tell me about me. So all right,
- 17:03so go ahead check out Zeus said again, the adoption fee, courtesy of
- 17:07the Bridge Valley Foundation has been taken care of. So appreciate Hannah for cob
- 17:11Doom. We're going to take a break. Phone calls to the Dave Valan

- 20:29to hear my name on the Dave Allen Show. Listening on the way to
- 20:30the beach to cheer on the herd, you're probably wondering doctor Sack, doctor
- 20:36Casey Saxonbridge Valley as my guest co host that you're probably wondering, why does
- 20:38Dave know people named superstar? I mean, if who want doesn't want to
- 20:44be a superstar? Well, in my various things I've done in my interesting
- 20:47life somewhat interesting. I was in the wrestling business for some time, not
- 20:52as a wrest I know. You find that hard to believe when you look
- 20:53at this body you go back, that's spitting in a cup. Day,
- 20:56that's a wrestler right there. No, I'm not a wrestler. I mean
- 21:00and I was a ring announcer, you know, for for thirty years and
- 21:04worked with some of the best and Superstar Shane Matthews is a professional wrestler based
- 21:08here in West Virginia. He's on his way right now to the beach that
- 21:11you're on. The Thundering Herd. It's a good set to Second Coastal Carolina
- 21:15tomorrow. So I don't heard big big shout out to superstar Shane Matthews.
- 21:19All right, guys, not out is happening tomorrow morning, not night,
- 21:23since it's a noon kick for the Mountaineers in Central Florida from Orlando. It's
- 21:26the annual fundraiser for the YEWCA Sojournal Shelter. Jennifer Fleshman, who is the
- 21:30program director for the YWCA, joined us now for the second time this week.
- 21:34Jennifer, good morning, how are you, good morning? Thank you
- 21:37for having me. I know you don't have a whole lot of time,
- 21:40so we'll kind of keep this short. I've got with me doctor Casey Sacks
- 21:42from Bridge Valley. Who's my guest co host this week. Oh awesome,
- 21:47good morning, How are you morning? I'm doing wonderful. How are you
- 21:51great? Thank you so, Jennifer for you and the organizers. It's now,
- 21:53you know, less than twenty four hours till show. Well, it's
- 21:56about twenty four hours until showtime. But oaks Field tomorrow for Guys Night Out.
- 22:02That's happened at ten o'clock in the morning. Talk about it. Oh
- 22:04wile, this year is awesome. We have a new group coming, three
- 22:08or four hole hunters. We're doing a cornhole competition pre game from ten to
- 22:15twelve and at halftime we'll have the finals for that. We also have our
- 22:19Best Wings in the Valley competition at halftime and we've got several several people that
- 22:26are participating in that. We've got Sam's Uptown Cafe, the Red Carpet Fit,
- 22:30the Olive Tree, the Cold Spot, the Bucket, Buffalo, Wild
- 22:33Wings and Embassy Suites. We've got the Beverage Market is our premier beer vendor.
- 22:40We've got Stony Creek Cigars coming out with the tent is halfway up now,
- 22:45so we're halfway there. The event is at Oaks Field in South Charleston.
- 22:49Pregame starts at ten and kickoff is at twelve. So talk about We
- 22:55kind of covered this a little bit earlier in the week, but just in
- 22:56case people weren't listening the why a sojournal shelter. Talk about some of the
- 23:00programs that you offer there. Oh, we have all kinds of programs here.
- 23:06People come here when they have they need a place to stay, They
- 23:10need somewhere to stay and to get back on their feet, so we welcome
- 23:14them in. We give them a bed and a reason to get out of
- 23:17it. This event is important to us because it gives us unrestricted dollars that
- 23:22we can use for really anything. So if somebody comes inn a child doesn't
- 23:26have a coach or a book bag or shoes, we can run out and
- 23:30get it. We run on grants, but they have certain things that you
- 23:34can pay for with them and certain things you can't. So this unrestricted dollars
- 23:41helps us out tremendously. Indeed, now, are tickets still available today or
- 23:45what about tomorrow morning? Are the tickets going absolutely well, Well, you
- 23:51can buy your tickets at Guys' Night Out Charleston dot Com all the way up
- 23:55until tonight and tomorrow you can buy them at the gate all right, tickets
- 24:00available with the gate. Okay. I want to make sure that we get
- 24:03that out there, because you know, there's so many different things going on
- 24:06with this. I've had an opportunity to attend it in the past, and
- 24:08you know again, you'll have the game on there. Hopefully we'll get a
- 24:11Mountaineer victory tomorrow because both the Mountaineers and my alma mad of the Thundering Herd
- 24:15definitely need to get back on the winning, winning side of things. So
- 24:18you got the game going on, you got wings, you got the cornhold
- 24:21ter. But it's just a big old party for a great cause tomorrow.
- 24:25It is absolutely it's the largest tailgate party south of the Blue Lot we call
- 24:30it right, all right, Jennifer. I know you got a lot of
- 24:33preparation to do. Is there anybody that you need to think? I know
- 24:37you if you start thanking people, you leave people off the list, But
- 24:38is there anybody particular out there that you need to think? Oh my goodness,
- 24:44there's so many people Huntington Bank and Kovia Teeth, the energy Dutch miller
- 24:48of South Charleston. We've got the beverage market, Stoney Creeks Cigars, three
- 24:52or four, Whole Hunters. There's so many more. I cannot think of
- 24:56them all. I don't want to say any more because I'm afrail forget.
- 25:00That's exactly what I said. You end up leaving people off the list,
- 25:03Jennifer. I appreciate it. We'll have you on again, maybe with a
- 25:06wrap up to tell us what's going on, so we'll talk against So good
- 25:08luck with everything tomorrow. Thanks so a really successful event. Oh, thank
- 25:11you so much. We're hoping for it, Jennifer, thanks a lot.
- 25:15I appreciate it. Thank you, guys. Night out again tomorrow at Oaksfield.
- 25:18Tickets are available with their website and you can also get them at the
- 25:22gate tomorrow. And it is a big old party out there. And the
- 25:25weather, you know, I was keep in touch with meteorologies, is Brian
- 25:29Hughes a lot And you know it looks like that there could be some some
- 25:33light shower activity they're saying, but not a whole lot, I mean,
- 25:37just some sprinkles here or there. So I mean you can for sure drink
- 25:41beer and tailgate even if it's sprinkling. Yeah, and it's sprinkles. We're
- 25:44not talking about Downport and that's that's even kind of. It was raining a
- 25:47little bit when I left my house this morning. There you go. There,
- 25:49you know, temperature is going to be pretty good out here as well.
- 25:53Dave Allen Shows brought to you part of by General Hardware Lumber of Windfield.
- 25:57Come check out the new contractor showroom Number Yard and more. They deliver

- 26:08Want to quickly say thank you to all of the folks who joined us last
- 26:12night, the parents' grandparents. Well over three thousand kids last night came through
- 26:18the gates at Gomart Ballpark for the seventeenth annual Trick or Beat That's Great powered
- 26:22by Todd Judy Motors. It was a capacity crowd last night the ballpark.
- 26:25Thank you so much to all the sponsors who made it possible. Quickly,
- 26:27I'll say the dirty birds they give up the ballpark for us. City of
- 26:32Charleston, Charleston Police Department, the Mayor's office. It was a great,
- 26:36great night. We're going to do it even bigger and better next year.
- 26:37Bunch of pictures if you want to see what you missed or posted, I've
- 26:41got and posted on Dave Alan Radio on facebooks if you want to see all
- 26:45the fun last night. But again, we had doctor Saxe over thirty five
- 26:48hundred that's estimated over thirty five hundred kids out there last night. You know,
- 26:52we did one and we had two thousand families last week. It's amazing.
- 26:55I mean, it really really is. And there's so many of these
- 26:57things going on. But the thing about this is seventeenth year that we and
- 27:02I say we this is primarily the brainchild of Woody Woods from her sister station,
- 27:07one of seven three to beat g Money DJ act right. But this
- 27:11is one of those events that we do that all of us are there.
- 27:12I mean, we had people from v one hundred winter sales staff there.
- 27:18Everybody was out there. The mayor was out there dressed in the Pink Ladies
- 27:21costume last night from Greece. Oh she wasn't a barbie. No, she
- 27:25did the whole Pink Ladies thing with the wig and the whole thing and she
- 27:27was out there having She was having a good time out there last night,
- 27:30as everybody was out there. But again, we couldn't do it without the
- 27:34mile long list of sponsors, so thank you to them. I'm going to
- 27:38just give a quick shout out to the folks at Papa John'sizza because they donated
- 27:41all the pizzas and we had a lot of pizzas. Thirty five hundred kids
- 27:45plus parents and radio people. You're gonna have a whole lot of pizzas are
- 27:48going to be scarved out. So thanks to the folks that Papa John's for
- 27:52making that all possible. The big event was held last night. Now,
- 27:56speaking of Trunk or Treat, I told my friend Chris Witthrow, who's frequently
- 28:00on the showed me from the Benny Keatam Shrine that I'd get this out there.
- 28:04And you mentioned doctor Sachs, the Trunker treet that you guys did.
- 28:07There's so many of these things going on, but I did want to get
- 28:10this one because I promised Chris I would. He's doing the thing. He
- 28:14and the folks at the Shriners organization here in Charleston love the name. It's
- 28:18called Nightmare on Courrier Street and it's happening at their parking lot, which is
- 28:22next to the Coddleseemic Convention Center, and that starts around six o'clock or so
- 28:26this evening. So get the kids from school after work, bring the kids
- 28:30over free of charge. They're going to have the whole parking lot filled up.
- 28:34The Shriners are going to be out there. It's going to be a
- 28:37great, great event for the kids. And again there's just so I can't
- 28:40mention them all. There's going to be so many going on in the area
- 28:41this weekend, these trunk re treats, but this one's called Nightmare and Courier
- 28:45Street folks at the Benny Keaton shrying and putting it on. Starts at six
- 28:48this evening, and it's happening at their parking lot, which is next to
- 28:52the Coddleseemic Convention Center. Hook the Dennis in town should sponsor all of these
- 28:55events. Yeah, I mean, once the kids eat all the candy,
- 28:59they obviously have to Yeah. Yeah, So are you listening to reb Dental.
- 29:03You know, it's it's one time of year. I think they give
- 29:06them a pass and they let him do that. But go go go check
- 29:08that one out. And all the others going on in the area this weekend.

- 33:16Sachs is my guest host this week, and I announced about a week and
- 33:21a half ago the Bridge Valley was a new sponsor to the show, and
- 33:24I'm really looking forward to learning more about the institution. So, doctor Sacks,
- 33:30before we get into what you got going on at Bridge Valley, and
- 33:31we played ten questions, tell us a little bit about you. Who is
- 33:36doctor Casey Sackson. How did you get here? Well, so I've lived
- 33:38in West Virginia twice. Okay. I moved here several years ago to be
- 33:43the vice chancellor for the Community College System, and then I had an opportunity
- 33:46to go to DC where I was the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community colleges at
- 33:51the United States Department of Education, and when that was finished, I got
- 33:54to come back. And so when I got to come back, it meant
- 33:57I got to be the president here at Bridge Valley. Been such such fun
- 34:01to come back to a community that I really care about and have such a
- 34:05wonderful job. Now. I mentioned of the show that you're originally from Colorado.
- 34:07Yeah, I'm originally all right, So is it Colorado or Colorado?
- 34:10Colorado? Colorado? Okay, all right, just wanting to kind of like
- 34:15that Nevada Nevada thing, you know, Nada, it's Novada. See she's
- 34:19already educating me. I'm getting my education from from Bridgeville. I can work
- 34:22a state pronunciation if you like. Okay, all right, well, just
- 34:24don't put an ess in Cistonville or Chapmanville and I'll be perfectly Well. Hurricane
- 34:30is hurricane. Uh So what part of Colorado are you from? And from
- 34:35a town called Evergreen. It's in the mountains outside of so you and Chris
- 34:38would definitely get along talking about about the outdoor stuff. So was this kind
- 34:44of a career in higher education? Was it something that you always thought you
- 34:46would do, maybe growing up as as a kid or a teenager you thought
- 34:50growing up, I actually thought I was going to be a Supreme Court justice.
- 34:52Really I had really small ass apprecious Yeah, well, you know,
- 34:55kids want to be a fireman or nurse. You're going all the way to
- 34:59the top. I can't remember every wanting to do something else. But I
- 35:02ended up going to school for a program called Higher Education Administration and studied school
- 35:08finance and looked at how do we run schools and how do we pay for
- 35:12schools? And what does that look like? And I can really geek out
- 35:15with an Excel spreadsheet. That's awesome. Talk about the physical location Bridge Valley
- 35:21for those who may not know, and I'll say I've been there. It's
- 35:23quite an impressive facility. Really is facilities. So we actually have two locations.
- 35:28Our biggest locations in South Charleston, where we have three buildings, the
- 35:31Toyota Hall, which a lot of folks have been to and don't even realize
- 35:35it's part of Bridge Valley. That's our Advanced Technology Center, manufacturings in there.
- 35:39Lots of computer programs are in that particular space. Then right across the
- 35:44way, we have a building that we call seven oh four Welding process technology.
- 35:50We have a program where you can learn how to read oil and gas
- 35:52wells and you write a four wheeler out to oil and gas wells. This
- 35:55is the job that you get hired for. How cool is that. It's
- 35:59such a cool job. People love it, and so you sort of think,
- 36:00maybe I don't like science. Well maybe you do like science, but
- 36:04you just don't realize it. You don't realize it. And then up the
- 36:07hill we have most of our health science programs. We have the best nursing
- 36:09program in the state, a phenomenal sonography program, medical lab tech. It's
- 36:15really beautiful facility. It's called Building two thousand. It's right up the hill
- 36:19and tons of offerings there and so it's actually in the Technology Park in the
- 36:24South Charleston area, up on the hill, and a lot of people in
- 36:28town tell me they've just never been up there because it was always locked when
- 36:30it was carbid that it was a gated facility, and it's not gated now.
- 36:34We want you to come visit us. We want you to come up
- 36:36on the hill. It's a phenomenal place. And then we have a second
- 36:38location in Montgomery where we occupy Davis Hall, which is just downtown on the
- 36:45railroad tracks. And again we do more sonography there HVAC, Diesel, CDL
- 36:50Lineman. So we have some boutique programs there also that are also terrific for
- 36:53the community and all lead the good paying jobs. Well, speaking of Montgomery,
- 36:57I'll give a little preview for Monday show. On Monday, Doctor Sachs,
- 37:00I do a thing called Mayor Monday, where I do I bring a
- 37:02different mayor from the community. Greg Ingram, the mayor of Montgomery, will
- 37:06be on the show. Oddly enough on Monday. Didn't really plan to have
- 37:08YouTube, it just kind of worked out that way. But Mayor Greg Ingeram
- 37:10Montgomery will be my mayor on Monday. Yeah. It seems like a really,
- 37:15really, really great guy. One of the things I like about these
- 37:17programs, Doctor Sacks, that you're doing is you're giving real world stuff and
- 37:22you know, and I've talked about this on the show before. As somebody
- 37:23who's a gen xer, you know, we were told, you know,
- 37:25you've got to go to a major institution. And I'm not saying Bridge Valley's
- 37:29not major, don't get me wrong, traditional type. You know, where
- 37:31you're setting in a psychology class when I'm going into broadcasting. Why am I
- 37:36said, well, no, think about it. We're all crazy. So
- 37:37I guess that did work out. But the for knowing exactly exactly, but
- 37:44you're giving real world experience. And what I like about this is is you
- 37:46are working with businesses and you're listening to them. You're going to one of
- 37:52the be a Toyota or being one of the other, and you're saying,
- 37:54Okay, what do you need of our people? I mean, what what
- 37:58can we do? So it's we've got a reverse of what it was for
- 38:01years. You're actually going to the employers and saying, Okay, what do
- 38:06we need to be teaching these kids or adults. Well, we try and
- 38:08lead with what the job is. So if you're thinking about being a nurse,
- 38:13we talk to all the hospitals in town and make sure that we've designed
- 38:15our nursing education so that you can be a really good nurse. Tons of
- 38:21work around cybersecurity right now, and every business in town probably you dave need
- 38:24a cybersecurity expert. Yeah, and so to think about how do we do
- 38:29that and who do we need and what are the skills that I actually need
- 38:32to hire for Often businesses say, well, I don't actually need somebody who
- 38:37has a bachelor's degree in computer information systems. What I need is somebody who
- 38:39can do these skills, and often that means they need a Cisco certification,
- 38:44which is much much shorter. So for the learner, that's a win because
- 38:47there's a real opportunity cost to going to college. But it also means it's
- 38:52a win for the business because they get the employee that they need much sooner.
- 38:55And you're doing a lot with businesses too. I've been talking about that
- 38:59during the live announcements that I've been doing. You're reaching out to the companies
- 39:04and saying, Okay, what can we do to help your staff? What
- 39:07can we teach them here? Maybe you know they're already higher they would have
- 39:10jobs, but what kind of programs you mentioned cybersecurity? What can we teach
- 39:15people that you already have employed. That's exactly true. We have lots of
- 39:19businesses who come in and say, could you work with these three people who
- 39:22already work for us and make sure they understand Excel better, or make sure
- 39:27they can do an access database, or teach them how to program or teach
- 39:30There's just a variety of things that companies come in and say I have a
- 39:34good employee. There's a person I like, but they need a few extra
- 39:37skills. It's not that the company wants to send them back to school for
- 39:39a whole other degree, but gosh, data analytics would be really helpful.
- 39:44So can you teach them some of that? So it's kind of like continuing
- 39:46education, as they call it, for years, you know, to teach
- 39:49themselves that. Else. We're talking with doctor k Cy Sachs Abridge Valley.
- 39:52The Dave Valence Shows brought to you a part bout Hustand's Pizza this month that
- 39:54your favorite Husband's get a large at nch Pepperoni Pizza and any Pizzada only twenty
- 39:59one ninety nine. Find your local Husband's Pizza for dining, delivery or pickup
- 40:02at Husband'spizza dot com. I was doing some rating about your organization, doctor
- 40:07Sax. More than more than ninety percent of the participants in your training programs
- 40:14are hired by the companies that have trained them. Yes, that's right.
- 40:16So we have an amazing program called Learn and Earn. We're looking for more
- 40:20businesses to partner with us, and what we do is we will split wages
- 40:23with you. So we go together apply for a grant together to the state.
- 40:28So it's not particularly a cumbersome But if you're a company, Dave,
- 40:32you and I will apply for this grant together, and then you take a
- 40:35student out of our program. Let's say you need someone to do accounting,
- 40:37so you take someone out of our accounting program, and then you're going to
- 40:42pay them a wage, so that we want to make sure students are getting
- 40:45paid while they're working. They do they have to do real work for you.
- 40:49Let's say you pay them twenty dollars an hour, the college will reimburse
- 40:52you ten dollars an hour for that, So it lowers the cost for you
- 40:54as a company, as a business owner, and it makes sure that our
- 40:59students have that opportunity to work in a real world environment, doing real accounting
- 41:02work as opposed to just theoretical in the classroom. Yeah, studying in the
- 41:06classroom and doing it and not where Sometimes, with all due respect to the
- 41:09instructors, it's not really hands on. I mean, you're you're dealing with
- 41:13made up companies, so to speak, because we all did those kind of
- 41:15problems and start. Our instructors are phenomenal and they work really hard to make
- 41:20sure that they have applied scenarios. But a lot of what they're doing is
- 41:22taking students who are in work experiences and saying, what problems are you solving
- 41:28at work? Great, let's work on those right now at school so that
- 41:30you can be a better employee. Right and who better I mean, going
- 41:34back to the training programs, is you said as I said, ninety percent
- 41:37of the participants are hired by the companies who better to hire the people than
- 41:39the company the company operators that actually train them. And that's exactly I mean
- 41:45we see that every single day that we recognize that the way people get jobs
- 41:49is through experience and through mentorship. And the best way to get students mentorship
- 41:53is to connect them directly to those mentors who own the real companies where they're
- 41:57going to end up working. So some let's talk about things you could do
- 42:01for existing employees and companies. I own a business, Jeff and I own
- 42:05my producer. We own a business that it's Dave and Jeff's IT Services slash
- 42:10hotdogstand. Okay, all right, so I want my I want my current
- 42:15employees to learn these new skills that we talked about. We've got some that
- 42:19just need maybe a little brush up or something, because technology is constantly I
- 42:22mean years ago, as you well know, years ago, you know you
- 42:27could do a job. You can do the same job exactly the same way
- 42:30for twenty twenty five thirty years. Okay, it's not that way now with
- 42:34technology we changed. They're always and there's not a job out there that's not
- 42:38it's not going to be touched my computers in some way. I mean,
- 42:42I'm ridding half the jobs that exists right now didn't exist when we were kids,
- 42:45exactly exactly. That's what I'm what I'm kind of getting at. So
- 42:47I contact you, I say, Okay, I've got X number of employees
- 42:52and I want to get them trained. I want to get them certified to
- 42:53do this. How does the process work? We call you and then what
- 42:57so go to Bridge Valley dot edu forward slash Apprenticeships. That's sort of a
- 43:00very easy starting point, and then you'll tell us what it is you're looking
- 43:05for. So if your IT slash hot dog stand is looking looking for it
- 43:09trading, then we'll connect you, probably with Bob who runs our IT program,
- 43:15and first he'll tell you the things that we're currently doing. Because there's
- 43:17a chance that we already have an existing thing that meets your needs. And
- 43:22so if we do, then he'll just explain, great, let's get your
- 43:24three people signed up for this existing class and then they'll they'll get the class
- 43:29and the training and they'll keep working with you. If we don't have what
- 43:31you want, then it takes about six months to customize a program. So
- 43:36we talk through, Okay, what is it that you need? Do you
- 43:38have examples of that. Let's you know, if they're doing exactly the right
- 43:43training somewhere in Tennessee, we'll send faculty members to Tennessee to replicate whatever it
- 43:47is that you thought was really great and make it happen here in West Virginia
- 43:51so that we're meeting your needs. I mean, it's amazing to me.
- 43:52This was a totally different way of doing higher education. Well, we really
- 43:59want people to get hired. Yeah, and in West Virginia. We spent
- 44:01a lot of time talking about the show on the show about all of the
- 44:05jobs that are coming in Toto, West Virginia. They got so many great
- 44:07jobs, I mean, and everybody's hiring. So manufacturing technology, we have
- 44:14the most incredible program. It's called Fame. It's the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing
- 44:17Education and a consortium of manufacturers have gotten together to make sure they can do
- 44:22that paid training while students go to school. So they come to school at
- 44:25Bridge Valley two days a week, they go work at one of our fame
- 44:29companies three days a week, and new course participating in Toyota is participating and
- 44:34they're great companies. The average wage for my last year graduating class from that
- 44:38Advanced Manufacturing Technology Group was eighty eight thousand dollars with a two year degree with
- 44:45eighty eight thousand, it's incredible. It's an outcome that we're just so proud
- 44:49of that. If I can get more people to go into AMT, that
- 44:51would be wonderful for the region and the companies and for those families whose person
- 44:55is now making a real wage that can really change your family's lives. Incredible.
- 45:00So that's good stuff that's going on out there. We're talking with doctor

- 48:06for the audience that you don't know what the questions are. I do not
- 48:08know what the questions as always our audience listening my co host doctor Saxony,
- 48:12are highly trained professionals. These questions were developed and tested in a lab located
- 48:16in Goldtown, West Virginia. Please do not try this. Yes, please
- 48:21do not try this at home. And is always no wageram Doctor Casey Sacks
- 48:24Abridge value? Are you ready to play ten questions? You bet? All
- 48:28right? Here we go. Your favorite drink at a restaurant, be it
- 48:30coffee, tea, soda or water is not available? What's your second choice?
- 48:36Water? No, it's not available. Oh I thought that came.
- 48:39My first choice wasn't available. Okay, you're right, you're right. I'm
- 48:44sorry. It's it's just what's what I get for having an academic on the
- 48:46show? All right, all right, I'm moving on. What time did
- 48:49you go to bed last night? I got in bed at nine and started
- 48:53reading and probably fell asleep at midnight. Okay. What's the oddest thing in
- 48:58your purse right now? Honest thing? Okay, we'll go with that.
- 49:05Your teenage celebrity crush Michael Jackson. The most beautiful place you've ever visited?
- 49:10Oh god, I mean you're from Colorado, so I'm trying to get to
- 49:14pronunciation right, So there's so many beautiful Okay, just give me one holy
- 49:20smokes Malta, Malta. Okay. Your least favorite season of the year winter.
- 49:25Your favorite sport to attend in person? Pulo? That may be a
- 49:30first. Uh. Your best friend at elementary school's first name was Rachel.
- 49:37Uh. Do you have your high school class ring? And do you know
- 49:38where it is? If you have one, do you know where it is?
- 49:42I had a high school class ring that maybe I still have, and
- 49:45no, I for sure don't know where it is. Dogs cats are neither.
- 49:50I already know that, both the dogs and cats. But congratulations,
- 49:53you've completed ten questions. Well that those were painless. Thanks you take a
- 49:58breather, enjoy a moist. Now we'll continue with the show. You got
- 50:01a big event coming up to night, talk about it. We do.
- 50:04We have the pink carpet event tonight. It's down at the Running Right Center
- 50:07if you want to come to it. It's on one nineteen cord or g
- 50:09upcord or g. It's a fashion show, so it's a fashion show for
- 50:14breast cancer survivors. We have survivors walking, we have people walking for people
- 50:19who they loved. It should be really fun. All the local boutiques have
- 50:22sponsored models and have dressed them for the evening. So I'm excited to see
- 50:25you. You did not ask Hollywood, Jeff and I had to be modeled.
- 50:29I'm sorry. We do have my board chair Mark Blank and ship is
- 50:31going to model Tony the tailor. We're all awfully excited about that. All
- 50:35right. Tony was a guest host here a couple of weeks ago. Well,
- 50:37he'll be featured in our fashion show tonight. All right, and give
- 50:40me the time and the information on that. Starts to six drinks, doors,
- 50:45open drinks, appetizers all start at six thirty. Fashion show should be
- 50:49a pretty good party, come up to the running right center at six thirty
- 50:52and it's fifty five dollars at the door. All right. So I got
- 50:55a couple of texts here before. One says I missed the start of the
- 50:59show. But Casey is a rotary buddy. If you didn't already know that,
- 51:00West Virginia is like you to have her. I am a rotarian,
- 51:04proud Rotaria. I have been a rotarian for many years. I'm two time
- 51:07president of two different organizations. Thank you for serving. So another text I
- 51:10had here which I lost, it says that you may want to point out
- 51:15about student loans. What about student loans? All this christ about student loans
- 51:19that may be going to Bridge Valley. Your student loans may be a little
- 51:21less. Bridge Valley is very affordable. So we have an incredible program in
- 51:24West Virginia that not enough people know about. It's called the West Virginia invest
- 51:29Grant. And what that does is the state has looked at our programs and
- 51:31said, almost every single program at Bridge Valley leads to a job, and
- 51:36so any of these programs that lead to jobs in the area, the state
- 51:38will cover whatever your tuition is. So you're still on the hook. For
- 51:42some fees. You're still on the hook for books. There's still skin in
- 51:45the game if you will be a student. But less than ten percent of
- 51:49our students on campus takeout loans for school. That we try that people get
- 51:52the training they need to go to school. And while student loans are a
- 51:55definite problem for the country and something we see at League institutions and others,
- 52:01it's not a big part of the Bridge Valley experience. All right. Well,
- 52:05Dot Sacks, has been a pleasure having you on the show today.
- 52:07Thank you, such a pleasure to be here, and we'll be talking to
- 52:09you again over the next couple of weeks. So I'm gonna have a return
- 52:13visit for me I think sometime in the middle of November. My thanks to
- 52:16hand A Gardner from The Canal Charles you made association with this week's Adopt Me
