Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: Our public service can do better
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Made of my and sorry, I'll start that again. A
- 0:04Speaker 1: mate and I have a little joke whenever we screw up,
- 0:07Speaker 1: either big or small, we'll look at each other and
- 0:09Speaker 1: go It only took one goat. If you know, you know.
- 0:12Speaker 1: But it acknowledges that it takes forever to build up
- 0:15Speaker 1: a good reputation, and all it takes is one misstep
- 0:18Speaker 1: to immediately undo all that good work. So New Zealand
- 0:20Speaker 1: recently was told that it had slipped to place in
- 0:22Speaker 1: the world reputational survey around fraud and corruption. We're now
- 0:26Speaker 1: fourth in the world. We used to be higher. That's
- 0:28Speaker 1: still pretty good, but it's not as good as we
- 0:31Speaker 1: were before. The news that confidential data held by a
- 0:35Speaker 1: government agency was inappropriately given to a third party as
- 0:38Speaker 1: a very serious one. Maybe it was a misuse, but
- 0:43Speaker 1: that's not the point. It should never have been released.
- 0:46Speaker 1: It should not have been released without safeguards. Maybe this
- 0:49Speaker 1: was not as dodgy as it seems, but if we
- 0:52Speaker 1: let standard slide, then the next time could be even worse.
- 0:55Speaker 1: This is not the right time to be seen as
- 0:57Speaker 1: a wink nudge nudge sort of country. There's more than
- 1:00Speaker 1: enough third world antics in play in this country as
- 1:03Speaker 1: it is already. And when you combine that finding along
- 1:06Speaker 1: with Brian Roach's report into the Civil Service that shows
- 1:09Speaker 1: us to be over governed and shows our governance our
- 1:12Speaker 1: civil service to be below standard, then the slow degradation
- 1:16Speaker 1: of New Zealand's reputation is certainly underway. We have too
- 1:20Speaker 1: many public servants and the ones that are there are
- 1:23Speaker 1: making either stupid mistakes or dodgy decisions. So New Zealand
- 1:28Speaker 1: can do better. That's the report card. For more from
