- 0:00Hello, this is Leslie and I am the host of the Why Not Today? podcast.
- 0:06And this is a podcast to celebrate people who have been courageous and said, why not
- 0:10today?
- 0:11I started this podcast to honor my father, Patrick Cain, who often did say, why not today?
- 0:16I am based in Reston, Virginia, a planned community right outside of Washington, DC.
- 0:20And thanks for joining us today.
- 0:21So I'm really excited.
- 0:22My guest today, we're in person.
- 0:24Yay!
- 0:25Thank you.
- 0:26More fun.
- 0:27Yes.
- 0:28So I would just like to introduce my guest and kind of how we met.
- 0:31So this is J-Bon Bishop.
- 0:32Hi.
- 0:33And Jessica, or J-Bon.
- 0:35Yes.
- 0:36We met, honestly, because I was stalking you.
- 0:38You were?
- 0:39Really?
- 0:40You never talked about that.
- 0:41Yeah.
- 0:42I went, so we are in, it's not like, which I'm here often.
- 0:45And I saw you on Facebook and you were just marketing like crazy.
- 0:50Yeah.
- 0:51Sharing a lot.
- 0:52And I'm like, who is this chick?
- 0:53And so you're having something at your house.
- 0:55Yep.
- 0:56And I was like, I'm just a thing.
- 0:58And so you had an ornament.
- 0:59I wanted to get a gift for somebody.
- 1:01And I went there.
- 1:02Of course, they were all sold out.
- 1:04Yep.
- 1:05They were.
- 1:06So reach out to you afterwards.
- 1:07And you ordered one for me.
- 1:09We met for Kosti.
- 1:10Fell in love with you and just have followed you and just your journey and become great
- 1:13friends.
- 1:14I'm glad you showed up at my house.
- 1:16We just never know how you're going to connect.
- 1:18And the funny thing is my friend Andy came with me.
- 1:20He was your neighbor.
- 1:21That's right.
- 1:22And he's like, I want to meet this person too.
- 1:24And he was so many people at the lake.
- 1:26And I'm so grateful for you and your friendship.
- 1:28You've connected yourself.
- 1:29Yeah.
- 1:30So I'm excited to have you as our guest and talking about your great story.
- 1:33So before we get into all your courage and everything, introduce yourself a small or
- 1:37fun fact about you.
- 1:38Nobody knows.
- 1:39Okay.
- 1:40We can get to know you and then we'll talk about courage.
- 1:42All right.
- 1:43So I'm J. Bond Bishop.
- 1:44My name is Jessica.
- 1:45I go by J. Bond.
- 1:46It's a nickname from seventh grade.
- 1:47But it's also become the brand of my store.
- 1:48This is the name of my store.
- 1:50And as you can see, the cursive just kind of looks pretty together.
- 1:52So like the J and the B and the B.
- 1:54So J. Bond Bishop, Rick and Paul.
- 1:56I am the owner here at the St.
- 1:58Lake.
- 1:59I do have a brick and mortar.
- 2:00I have another location actually across the lake.
- 2:02But it has definitely taken a lot to get to this point.
- 2:05You know, and if people always think like, oh, look, you opened a story.
- 2:08You just, I had this idea and it all happened now.
- 2:11It's up to downs and good, some bad and everything.
- 2:14So what's, so you're from, you're from this area.
- 2:17I've been here for I will be 37 in January.
- 2:20So I've literally been here that whole time.
- 2:22And that is of course when I went off to college for a couple of years.
- 2:25And it's changed a lot.
- 2:26It has.
- 2:27I've watched it grow the whole side of the lake.
- 2:29I've literally watched that grow.
- 2:31Yeah.
- 2:32Crazy.
- 2:33And you built that.
- 2:34All right.
- 2:35So what's the fun fact about J.
- 2:36Bond?
- 2:37Nobody knows.
- 2:38The fun fact that most people don't realize is that actually my, you
- 2:41know, I guess past and my experiences have nothing to do with retail,
- 2:44with any of that.
- 2:46Or I guess just the fact is that I have a master's in higher education.
- 2:52I don't want to be in the student affairs still than it actually took me
- 2:57being at admissions counselor at the university.
- 3:00I went to, to realize that I actually loved sharing things with people that I
- 3:04was passionate about, which was my school at the time.
- 3:07And yeah, so that degree was supposed to lead me to be on the other side of
- 3:12that, which was to cater to those students once they got to school.
- 3:16And that's just wasn't what I know what you learned is people skills.
- 3:20Yeah.
- 3:21Yeah.
- 3:22Somebody came in and told me that I did share that with a customer.
- 3:24They said, you're just teaching people how to shop.
- 3:26Exactly.
- 3:27I absolutely am.
- 3:28Yep.
- 3:29That's what I do.
- 3:30You people have to go there.
- 3:31Yeah.
- 3:32You know, my degree is my master's in finance.
- 3:34So like master's in finance in your American.
- 3:36But it works.
- 3:37Right.
- 3:38Yeah.
- 3:39My business woman.
- 3:40I'm a big fan of your, you know, total upper sales.
- 3:43That's like the building.
- 3:44Right.
- 3:45So, all right.
- 3:46So what does courage mean to you?
- 3:48Courage means to me.
- 3:49I thought a lot about this.
- 3:50Courage means to me doing something that obviously, you know, you're scared of.
- 3:56Everybody knows that.
- 3:57But to me, it's setting boundaries.
- 4:00It is just kind of setting aside all insecurities of yourself, of anything and
- 4:06not really worrying about what people think.
- 4:08A lot of what I know we're going to get into today and really reflects that on me because
- 4:13I spent so many years worrying about what other people thought or what's going to happen.
- 4:18And so courage is really literally just setting aside all of that and making your dreams happen.
- 4:24Yeah.
- 4:25And that's so true in that whole, what are people think and we judge, you know, and we
- 4:31take advice.
- 4:32And this is what I've seen a lot.
- 4:33We take advice from people we don't even like.
- 4:35Right.
- 4:36The girl from high school we didn't even like.
- 4:38Right.
- 4:39Or her aren't planning to do the things we don't want to do.
- 4:41Yeah.
- 4:42I'm like, they're not thinking.
- 4:43We have bigger thinkers.
- 4:44Yeah.
- 4:45Definitely big thinkers we are.
- 4:46Yeah.
- 4:47Absolutely.
- 4:48That's why we connected immediately and shared ideas.
- 4:49And this podcast interview came about that when I was down at the lake last week, came
- 4:54in and hung out with you and we're like, we need to do that.
- 4:56Literally, we need to pin it down.
- 4:57All right.
- 4:58So courage.
- 4:59You've had a lot of courage.
- 5:00You started this business.
- 5:01But let's go back to, I think, before you started this.
- 5:05I think it was around the 2020 and life was hard for you.
- 5:09Just to kind of, you know, just giving you all a brief little history about just, you
- 5:13know, had the degree to do higher education and back in 2013, you know, I decided then
- 5:18that I was made to work for myself.
- 5:20Like I just knew very early on that was just what I needed to do to be happy.
- 5:24And that took a lot of courage in itself and discipline.
- 5:27That's another thing, discipline.
- 5:29Yeah.
- 5:30Absolutely.
- 5:31And so, you know, I was able to build an online community of people over the last 10 years,
- 5:36but then going back to 2020, you know, the world shut down and I was already connected
- 5:41to the community in the way of doing social media for folks.
- 5:45So post COVID, I actually ended up starting the social media marketing company to help
- 5:50mentor and guide the local business owners and just small business owners like myself.
- 5:56And so throughout those 10 years, I've done things like Stella and Dot.
- 6:00That was of course my biggest and my longest journey with social selling.
- 6:05And so in 2020, we had gift shops around the lake, restaurants, you name it, they were
- 6:12trying to figure out how can we pretty much convert sales to online.
- 6:17And I remember setting with a couple of different business owners and just really talking over
- 6:22how do we bring this to be an online thing because 2020, like you've got all this inventory
- 6:27coming in.
- 6:28That was me.
- 6:29How are you going to sell it?
- 6:30Right.
- 6:31When you have no know how of doing online.
- 6:35And so what turned into just starting with a couple of things ended up spending the whole
- 6:402020 mentoring and just meeting fix at the coffee shop and giving them the advice that
- 6:46I had and just what I had learned since not, you know, being in this industry.
- 6:51So yeah, I forgot your question Leslie.
- 6:55So just how you got here.
- 6:57Yeah.
- 6:58So you were such a happy upbeat, right?
- 7:03Fun personality, but it's not always that way.
- 7:07It's not.
- 7:08And so that's where we were going with that one is that in 2020.
- 7:11So after I had done all that, you know, I had really extended out a lot of help to people
- 7:17and granted, you know, after 2021 started, you know, they were paying me to do it because
- 7:22at that point I could no longer do it volunteer as much as I would have loved to.
- 7:27I kind of run ran myself into a hole because I had that knowledge of online and social
- 7:34sharing and that sort of thing.
- 7:36Come June, I had meant toward over 100 people plus for workshops, not to mention all the
- 7:43social media account that was right.
- 7:45So I was setting no boundaries.
- 7:46I wasn't taking care of myself and it takes a lot of courage to say, Hey, like we need
- 7:52to change and to actually ran myself into a hole and I became really depressed.
- 7:57I've been diagnosed with OCD.
- 8:00So had some mental health issues in 2020 started in early 2019.
- 8:05Did you know about that before?
- 8:06Nope.
- 8:07Like I said, in 2019 something just wasn't right.
- 8:11Like I went to the doctor and didn't really actually get help help until July of 2020.
- 8:16So fast for a year after that.
- 8:19I just something was inside of me just depressed.
- 8:24Didn't want to leave the house.
- 8:25You just mentioned I'm bubbly and you know, I don't want to go anywhere.
- 8:28I didn't want to get stressed.
- 8:29It wasn't.
- 8:30So I knew that I needed to make a change and one of those changes was to say no, all the
- 8:34things that I've been taken on, but something inside of me.
- 8:37So I was still doing selling dot at the time, which obviously is all in my mind.
- 8:42When you do your own pop ups and whatnot, which those of you don't know what that is.
- 8:46It's another direct selling company.
- 8:47It's a health story, health story.
- 8:50And so for me, I just had this gut feeling.
- 8:53It was one of the things I was at the darkest time of my life, Leslie.
- 8:56Like I think I told you this part.
- 8:57Like I was at the darkest part of my life, but yet all I could think about was this was
- 9:03and when I say this, I don't even mean this store.
- 9:06I mean the mission of what we do.
- 9:08It wasn't even the same product line because we ended up launching J bond Bishop Mercantile
- 9:12at the chili fest just a few months later and it kind of looks completely different than
- 9:16this.
- 9:17We might have to go through a little tour of the store and work time.
- 9:20I don't know about that.
- 9:21Okay.
- 9:22We can share.
- 9:23You can tell in the background we are in her store.
- 9:26But what we've evolved to is what the customers have wanted.
- 9:30Right.
- 9:31So we didn't start out with clothes and shoes.
- 9:33We definitely had jewelry because that's my background is mostly having jewelry and
- 9:37that sort of fashion.
- 9:38Home decor is also the thing.
- 9:40When you come into the store now, you definitely get that experience and you could kind of
- 9:44tell that I like to decorate.
- 9:46I got a lot of good one on there.
- 9:48But yeah, it was just, like I said, I'm at home and I'm like, that's all I could, that's
- 9:54all I wanted to put my time and effort towards when I was really sad and I was really down.
- 9:59I don't even know that it's sad the best way to describe it, but just not feeling like
- 10:03myself, but I knew that doing this and what this means is especially now as it's evolved
- 10:09into clothing and as you know with makeup.
- 10:12We are seriously just like helping women feel good about themselves.
- 10:17And that's what I love about this.
- 10:19When people walk through the store, how can we help you?
- 10:21You know, oh, I'm looking for an outfit for XYZ and you're in and out.
- 10:26Yeah, we try to create a really good experience and really catering to just build in those
- 10:32relationships with people.
- 10:33But that has brought me joy that I was lacking.
- 10:36Right.
- 10:37So.
- 10:38So lots of things I heard you say.
- 10:39Yeah.
- 10:40Okay.
- 10:41I heard that you realized there was a problem, which is a problem, which is a good thing
- 10:45that and you got help.
- 10:46I did.
- 10:47And so so many people around the mental health issues are afraid to get help.
- 10:52And I think COVID, I hate to say that word, but magnified and brought it out.
- 10:56It did.
- 10:57I don't think I was ever lonely in my life and hope it right.
- 10:59And that's what brought me here.
- 11:01Issues were definitely underlined before COVID, but COVID definitely brought it out.
- 11:05And you were doing lots for a lot of people because you are a giver and you are a helper.
- 11:09And so you were doing a lot of things.
- 11:11And one, what I know for sure is we got to fill our own cup.
- 11:14Yeah.
- 11:15And if we're not filling our own cup, you can't give to somebody else.
- 11:17And I heard that all the time, but I was like in one ear and out the other and I thought
- 11:21that I was feeling my cup by doing things like, Oh, let me take myself out to lunch.
- 11:25They sort of sort of things that's so temporary.
- 11:28Yeah.
- 11:29You got to fill your soul up and do the things and some of the time things that give us joy
- 11:35are the ones that are going to fill our cup.
- 11:36That's right.
- 11:37And so you're just doing stuff to check them off.
- 11:39Yeah.
- 11:40It's not doing it.
- 11:41And you're helping everybody, which is great.
- 11:43I can help them now.
- 11:44I'm still helping them, but in a totally different way that's bringing us both joy.
- 11:47Right.
- 11:48To meet your beneficial things.
- 11:49Exactly.
- 11:50And a friend once tell me, you know, you stop entering into so many agreements with people
- 11:54that aren't usually official.
- 11:55And I thought, gosh, that is a really good way to look at things.
- 11:58I like that.
- 11:59Because it's not going to, you know, don't get me wrong.
- 12:02I still like to volunteer and I do that, but it brings me joy.
- 12:05If you're going to do something that isn't bringing you the joy.
- 12:08Well, I volunteer for something where your heart's not in it.
- 12:11That's right.
- 12:12Like one of the things I help out a lot with is domestic violence.
- 12:14Yes.
- 12:15Because Mary Kay's aligned with that.
- 12:16Right.
- 12:17But also the confidence for women.
- 12:18Yeah.
- 12:19You know, they say on average a woman's self esteem is highest at age 10.
- 12:22Oh, wow.
- 12:23It just breaks my heart.
- 12:24So how can we empower women and make people feel better and feel better?
- 12:27I understand that because I was 33 when I started going through this like mental health,
- 12:32basically crisis.
- 12:33And now when people have been telling me, I'm going to be your best and I'm like,
- 12:36oh, no, about that.
- 12:37I mean, I think 30 is like, they're hard.
- 12:40A decade where you kind of reevaluate them.
- 12:43Where am I?
- 12:44What am I doing?
- 12:45And then all the things on here, you know, you and I both don't have kids.
- 12:47And so that plays a lot into it.
- 12:50You know, if you've had children at that age, they might be going great.
- 12:53But for me, it's just been kind of just like 23 was also difficult.
- 12:57And, you know, we're deciding where you want to go and what you want to do.
- 13:01Yeah, exactly.
- 13:02So you created this amazing business and it is not just a store.
- 13:07It's not definitely don't want it to be.
- 13:09It is an experience.
- 13:10And that's what you've created.
- 13:11And I love like I'm when I'm down here, I just come to see you and experience it when
- 13:15I walked in the door the other day.
- 13:17And you were getting ready to close really what I walked in.
- 13:21That's okay.
- 13:22People hear you.
- 13:23I'll never close on you.
- 13:24I always see you.
- 13:25So you introduced me to somebody that wrote a devotional, which I've had in my hands
- 13:29the other day and I'm buying it.
- 13:31So, yeah, it's just, it's just, it's just you know, getting into, getting into the
- 13:37business of it and you know, just getting into the business of it and you know,
- 13:42just actually we will talk to just the, yeah, on the podcast.
- 13:45There were a couple girls trying on clothes and we were able to say, Oh,
- 13:48that looks good.
- 13:49No, I don't know about that.
- 13:50And there was something, you know, you could have been all about the mighty
- 13:53dollar, right.
- 13:54And there was a shirt that.
- 13:56Yeah.
- 13:57Sara, her, yeah.
- 13:58Sara was looking at and you're like, yeah, no, not today.
- 14:00and be confident with it and be happy with it and love it.
- 14:03And I try to make sure that when I leave here,
- 14:05if I can see them at the register with their wills,
- 14:07then I know how I am.
- 14:08You know, I do want to buy everything,
- 14:09but you just said you can't.
- 14:10And you're not gonna wear it and it's not making me happy.
- 14:13And if it's really making you sick to think about
- 14:15buying it, do not buy it.
- 14:17Yeah, and then you're gonna, every time you put it on,
- 14:19go, ugh, had to hide this from my husband.
- 14:21That's a facility just fine if you don't make that purchase.
- 14:23Exactly, exactly.
- 14:24I want you to come back and buy things that you love.
- 14:26Yep.
- 14:27So yeah, you evolve from online selling to a store.
- 14:31I know you have one in a marina,
- 14:33you have another pop-up and you open this store,
- 14:35which has probably took some courage and investment
- 14:39and putting yourself out there.
- 14:41It was a big decision because for me, pre-COVID,
- 14:46you know, and with still and bought, you know,
- 14:48I earned a lot of those trips,
- 14:49I was always traveling.
- 14:50We still like to travel,
- 14:52but the concept of having a brick and mortar,
- 14:54and probably also at the time in my life,
- 14:56I didn't have anybody that I knew was gonna be the person
- 14:58to run this store when I'm not here.
- 15:01It's one of the biggest things,
- 15:02is having your business not need you as much,
- 15:04or need you all the time.
- 15:06So you can have time for yourself,
- 15:08but pre-COVID, those things just weren't lined up.
- 15:11And so in my head, I thought I never will have a store,
- 15:13that was not the mission.
- 15:15Again, this did not start with the same product line,
- 15:18it was a lot more manageable.
- 15:20This was hard to manage, but I loved it.
- 15:23But yeah, so I ended up doing it because I said,
- 15:25you know, now that I'm in a place where if I need to go
- 15:28on vacation, and I do, I can do it,
- 15:30we all do at hand and things still run smooth.
- 15:34And so, you know, we've kind of progressed from all of that
- 15:37to now we still have the online portion,
- 15:39which is doing very well,
- 15:41and we had to continue to grow it.
- 15:43But in order for me to continue to grow,
- 15:45I'm bringing my mom on.
- 15:47So she's gonna become the Mercantile manager.
- 15:50Now she's the Mercantile mama,
- 15:51but she's gonna be the Mercantile manager.
- 15:53She's retiring, she's not super close to retirement,
- 15:57but I am retiring her to work with me.
- 15:59Yay!
- 16:01You know, that's it, you gotta have a strong team.
- 16:03And I know we talked one day,
- 16:06but we talked about getting help,
- 16:07and being able to delegate,
- 16:09and you know, we can't work all night, every night,
- 16:11and there's nothing to give back.
- 16:13That's right, it's not good for your mental health,
- 16:15and you know, going back to seeking help for mental issues,
- 16:20there's a huge stigma, as we all know,
- 16:23and that's one of the things that I've tried to voice
- 16:26and be very transparent with on Facebook,
- 16:28especially on Instagram,
- 16:30because I do realize I've got an audience of people
- 16:33who are looking, maybe they're not common,
- 16:35but they're watching, and so when I shared,
- 16:37you know, what I was going through,
- 16:39people were coming out of the woodworks, like,
- 16:41oh my gosh, you know, 65 year old man reached out,
- 16:44like, that's huge.
- 16:46Well, and I think that's the social media responsibility
- 16:49we have, and when we do have people following us,
- 16:51and people paying attention to us,
- 16:53you never know who's watching, and it's not about the likes,
- 16:56it's not about the comments,
- 16:57there's people watching behind the scenes,
- 16:58I often wear, and I have it on today, a starfish thing,
- 17:01because I do, do you know the story of the starfish?
- 17:04I do not know that.
- 17:05So there's a guy walking on the beach,
- 17:06and there were millions of stars on the beach,
- 17:10and he's picking them up and throwing them in the water,
- 17:12and they climb up and throw them in the water,
- 17:14and this other person walks up and he goes,
- 17:16what are you doing, you're never going to make a good person,
- 17:18you're going to make a difference.
- 17:20And he picked them up, threw them in the water,
- 17:21and said, I made a difference for that one.
- 17:24And so when you work with people, and anything you do,
- 17:27you never know who's watching, who's paying attention,
- 17:30and when you are on social media, you have an audience,
- 17:32you know, there's things I do that people make comment,
- 17:35and like, I have no idea what you're watching,
- 17:38you know, people that are listening to the podcast,
- 17:40I do an inspirational post.
- 17:41Let's make courage to make, do a podcast, right?
- 17:43It does.
- 17:44Like, everything that we decide to share takes courage.
- 17:47Whether it's the... When you share it with anybody,
- 17:49you know, sitting here on camera with a friend, you know,
- 17:52it takes courage.
- 17:53And I'm not perfect.
- 17:54I haven't been nervous at all, this has been great.
- 17:56You know, it's just a conversation.
- 17:58And it really always just share.
- 18:00It is.
- 18:02So, and let's go back to the store real quick.
- 18:04Sure.
- 18:05What I love about this is it isn't an experience,
- 18:08you walk in, you're greeted.
- 18:09Her dressing rooms, you guys, are almost as big as the store.
- 18:12They are, they're pretty big.
- 18:13You have.
- 18:14We did that for a reason that you know that, right?
- 18:16You know that.
- 18:17Well, I know one is Charleston and one is Nashville.
- 18:19Charleston and Savannah is the kind of the low country.
- 18:21Yeah.
- 18:22And then Nashville.
- 18:23And the reason that we kept them so big,
- 18:24number one is we already had a knockout like four walls.
- 18:26We were like, you know, what we've experienced in the past
- 18:29is that women love to come shop together, right?
- 18:32And whether it be mom and daughter,
- 18:33mom, daughter and baby, or gosh,
- 18:36a group of four to five women,
- 18:37that those dressing rooms will fit comfortably
- 18:41if you're willing to go in with your girlfriends
- 18:42and these ladies are, they go in there together
- 18:45and they're just in their pack one and laughing away
- 18:47and having the best time.
- 18:48So we're really able to do that.
- 18:50And then of course, the flex room is the national room
- 18:53that we use to serve on our buffet like food.
- 18:56We were having a good time.
- 18:57Because you do a lot of fun.
- 18:58We do a lot of events.
- 18:59A lot of food involved here because we love to eat.
- 19:01So and even if you walk in here by yourself,
- 19:03yes.
- 19:04You create friends.
- 19:05I know one time I was shopping with a friend
- 19:07and we were looking at something.
- 19:08And by the time we were done,
- 19:09we had a whole group of women.
- 19:11Right.
- 19:12And you know, you see something like,
- 19:13I don't know about that,
- 19:14somebody else try it on and see another combination.
- 19:16Like, yeah.
- 19:17I have that.
- 19:17If the room is full here,
- 19:18I always try to make connections because,
- 19:21you know, even if I've just met that person,
- 19:24I try to like listen to what they're saying
- 19:26and connect them with the person shopping beside them.
- 19:28And I've even had friends like one would walk out
- 19:31and I'd say, did y'all know each other before today?
- 19:33And they were like, no, we just met here.
- 19:34And I was like, in the way they were just interacting
- 19:36with each other, it just made me so happy.
- 19:37Well, I made three friends when I was in here.
- 19:38I wanted to make sure you had met the author
- 19:40of the book you'd been looking at.
- 19:42And you know, I like to connect people
- 19:44and I know you do too,
- 19:45but that's the biggest thing is just making sure
- 19:47that everybody knows everybody and like feels loved
- 19:50and they feel comfortable in this room.
- 19:52And the other thing too,
- 19:53I love about the dressing room, they're big.
- 19:55So you're not standing like this to a mirror.
- 19:57Right.
- 19:58And I think I shared with you the other day,
- 19:59the clothing store, she goes,
- 20:00I don't know if they still do this.
- 20:01They didn't have mirrors in the dressing room.
- 20:03Yeah, that's right.
- 20:04So you come out and somebody's like,
- 20:05oh, let's try this and this and this.
- 20:06Let's try that.
- 20:07Because, you know, we do want to be affirmed
- 20:09and we do want, you know, I don't want to buy stuff.
- 20:11We ask every lady that goes in, if you feel comfortable,
- 20:14be sure to come out and show us, we'd love to see it.
- 20:16And then we can really talk to them and truthful, you know,
- 20:18if it doesn't fit, we got a lot of pre-tools right now
- 20:21that want to shop for clothes bigger
- 20:22than they really need to be wearing.
- 20:23So I have to tell them, you need to really size down
- 20:26and it'll show your figure.
- 20:28And they really appreciate that because, you know,
- 20:31especially if mom's not with them
- 20:33or maybe mom's not around anymore.
- 20:34And you don't know, you know,
- 20:35you need somebody else to affirm and to tell us,
- 20:37oh, that was good.
- 20:38Yeah, then no girl, that's not the color.
- 20:40I interviewed somebody on this before
- 20:42that talked about fashion and she was like,
- 20:44oh, bless that with somebody else.
- 20:46Like, if you have some of your closet,
- 20:48that's a good story, yeah.
- 20:48That's right.
- 20:49If you have a blessing to somebody else.
- 20:50That's right, yeah.
- 20:51That's right, I love it.
- 20:52So, well, so you are a book, or a store,
- 20:57but also online, if you can shop.
- 20:59I know a couple of my friends are shopping.
- 21:00Yeah.
- 21:01So I told them about you.
- 21:02Thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 21:03But so, we do ship all over the US.
- 21:05Yeah, so we'll talk about the and how people connect with you.
- 21:07Yeah.
- 21:08So, we'll talk about how would you encourage somebody else
- 21:10to be courageous?
- 21:12How would I encourage someone else to be courageous?
- 21:14Maybe get help, mental health,
- 21:16if that's an issue or to start a business
- 21:18or just to do the scary things.
- 21:20How would you encourage somebody else?
- 21:21All above, I mean, gosh, you know,
- 21:23sometimes it takes, for me, it's doing that brain dump
- 21:27of like, what's going on?
- 21:30Like, what is the number one thing that you want to focus on
- 21:33and start there?
- 21:34Because once you've done the one courageous thing,
- 21:36then it kind of keeps.
- 21:37Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:38It's all set.
- 21:39And so, like, you know, we spoke about,
- 21:41it's been in the store, it took a lot of prayer
- 21:43and talking with my husband about,
- 21:45do we have time for this?
- 21:46Do, you know.
- 21:48It's a lot of time involved.
- 21:49It's not going to affect your entire relationship.
- 21:51Your entire family.
- 21:52Exactly.
- 21:53So, yeah, just to be courageous is to, you know,
- 21:56write it all down, get it out of your head.
- 21:58That's going to make you feel better, first of all.
- 21:59Oh, absolutely.
- 22:00Then just tackle those issues one by one
- 22:03and just do the set aside all the insecurities.
- 22:06Like I said before, don't worry about what other people say.
- 22:09We're so bad at that.
- 22:10Please stop, because I worried so much.
- 22:12And then we take advice from the people we don't even like.
- 22:14Exactly.
- 22:15And we don't.
- 22:16And definitely don't do that.
- 22:17Yeah.
- 22:18Especially, like I said, if they're not on the path
- 22:20to do anything related to what you want to do,
- 22:23those are the people who are never going to grow
- 22:25because they're just trying to tell everybody else what to do
- 22:27or what's wrong and what's right.
- 22:29Oh, you've heard the story of the crab, right?
- 22:30No.
- 22:31The crab pot.
- 22:32So you put crabs in a pot.
- 22:33Yeah.
- 22:34And the one tries to escape and the other one's going down
- 22:35and one tries to escape and the other.
- 22:37So people are like that.
- 22:38Yeah.
- 22:38We don't want to see you successful.
- 22:39Because they're scared to be successful.
- 22:41I've got another similar story.
- 22:42The church group years ago when I was little,
- 22:44it was such a great lesson.
- 22:46The teacher had one person sit on top of a table,
- 22:49just sit on the table, and the other person is on the floor.
- 22:53And they're trying to pull them up.
- 22:54And how easy it was for the person that was already down
- 22:57to pull the person up as opposed to the person who pulled them
- 23:00up.
- 23:01It's a lot harder to pull people up.
- 23:02Yeah.
- 23:02And so, yeah.
- 23:04I'm here to pull people up, though.
- 23:05I don't care how hard it is.
- 23:06You do a good job of it.
- 23:07And you do a great job.
- 23:08Thank you, Judy, too.
- 23:09Oh, thank you.
- 23:10And I'm fine.
- 23:10I love hanging out with you.
- 23:11Me, too.
- 23:12Yeah.
- 23:12It's fun to have an in-person.
- 23:14Yeah.
- 23:14All right.
- 23:15So people are probably wondering, how the heck do I
- 23:16get something cute something?
- 23:19It's a lot of pink, which brings a lot to pink.
- 23:21What's that mean?
- 23:21I mean, I'm wearing black, which is a no-no in this store.
- 23:24I will say.
- 23:25Jumping cat.
- 23:26I do have a pink cat.
- 23:27We did the black to be a little bit.
- 23:28And pink lips.
- 23:30Same, same.
- 23:32But yeah, so what are we telling them?
- 23:33Where they can chop?
- 23:34Where they can saw off?
- 23:35How they can find you?
- 23:37So it is just jbonbishop.com.
- 23:40Super simple, jbonbishop.com.
- 23:42They can look on there.
- 23:44And what I love about the local folks here
- 23:47is that we do a pork pick up or an in-store pick up.
- 23:50So you can reserve something when you're in town
- 23:53and make sure you have it.
- 23:55And then you get to decide if you
- 23:56need to come in the store or not.
- 23:58And then we also, of course, ship all over the United States.
- 24:02And then on social media, we love
- 24:04to have you be a part of our group, which is Jbonbishop,
- 24:09which is so funny.
- 24:10Did I tell you that the other day?
- 24:11No.
- 24:11Think about it.
- 24:12Bishop, the last part of my name says shop.
- 24:14So I went in and capitalized my group's name to Jbonbishop.
- 24:20Jbonbishop working in town.
- 24:21That's just a group name.
- 24:23But then you also have my Facebook page and my Instagram,
- 24:26which is also the handle.
- 24:27And we'll share all those links with everybody.
- 24:29My name is a little crazy.
- 24:31A little long.
- 24:32It's like, what is it?
- 24:33It's just fun.
- 24:34And it's not an exotic name.
- 24:35It's Jessica Bondbishop.
- 24:37People have always said we thought it was Jbon.
- 24:39I'm like, it's just basic.
- 24:41Just a safe place.
- 24:42Just a girl from the country.
- 24:43That's OK.
- 24:44And that's right.
- 24:45And yeah, so if you're coming to Smithmell Lake,
- 24:47you've got to come visit her.
- 24:48Or go online.
- 24:49And then everything comes from the right.
- 24:51Yeah.
- 24:52And I'll say this.
- 24:53And Leslie mentioned it earlier.
- 24:54I've been here my whole life.
- 24:56Not only when you come in here, I mean, obviously,
- 24:58we'd love for you to look around.
- 25:00But we are here to provide all the information you want.
- 25:03So if you need somewhere good to eat,
- 25:04we will tell you.
- 25:05If you need somewhere else to go shopping,
- 25:08we'll help you with that.
- 25:09We'll tell you about Renau-Gill-Lindberg.
- 25:11Like, we're kind of like one-stop shop here.
- 25:13You are a good referral.
- 25:14One of the places when I'm coming down here going through
- 25:16Danville is stopping at the pot.
- 25:18Yes.
- 25:19Oh, gosh.
- 25:19I always stop there.
- 25:20Shout out to Peyton at the pot and come out.
- 25:21I always stop there in between.
- 25:23That's right.
- 25:24And it's the other day.
- 25:24And I always think of you.
- 25:25So yeah.
- 25:26Good place.
- 25:27I've been here long enough to do all the little back roads
- 25:29and all the in-between.
- 25:30I think I'm getting there.
- 25:31Yeah.
- 25:32You're doing very good.
- 25:33So we'll share on the show notes where to find the save on.
- 25:36Yeah.
- 25:36That's right.
- 25:37We also have, I don't know, lots of why not today's way.
- 25:41There's a few little guys.
- 25:41We've got cups.
- 25:42We have t-shirts.
- 25:44We have vinyl.
- 25:45My second favorite color.
- 25:46This is, yeah.
- 25:46Yeah.
- 25:47So we're picking this.
- 25:48We've got all different colors.
- 25:49Also, what can I do in a journal?
- 25:51OK.
- 25:52Yeah.
- 25:52Yeah.
- 25:53Yeah.
- 25:54And brain-washing.
- 25:55Yeah.
- 25:55I think they go hand in hand.
- 25:56Journals are good.
- 25:57Yeah.
- 25:57Yeah.
- 25:58For sure.
- 25:58So, all right.
- 25:59Oh, I forgot the other thing too.
- 26:01I always try to connect people back to my dad.
- 26:03Like, how do I know my dad?
- 26:04Right.
- 26:05Well, and so I always try with the conversation
- 26:07like how we connect back.
- 26:08So I think for you, you're very much a part of the community.
- 26:11My dad and the community plan are big with community.
- 26:13He actually started the chamber.
- 26:15OK.
- 26:15I remember you telling me that.
- 26:17That's amazing.
- 26:17You were the one that encouraged me to join the chamber down here.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:20And so you all.
- 26:22Anybody, any chamber people like in your community, join them.
- 26:25They're awesome.
- 26:26Yeah.
- 26:26And I think you're also about community.
- 26:28Just like you said.
- 26:29When you come in here, you're going to first of all,
- 26:31get to know people.
- 26:31Figure out how you connect, what you did masterfully.
- 26:34And then you're going to share where the places go,
- 26:37what it's things to do.
- 26:38Right.
- 26:38And just make people feel important that you do a great job.
- 26:41Thank you, Leslie.
- 26:42Thank you.
- 26:43You're welcome.
- 26:43Right back at you.
- 26:44Well, it's been super fun.
- 26:45I love the conversation.
- 26:46I think just sitting here, I'm thinking,
- 26:48ooh, I might have to go do a little shopping.
- 26:50A little private party.
- 26:52Private shopping.
- 26:53I love it.
- 26:53Yes.
- 26:53All right.
- 26:54We can do that.
- 26:55So thanks again for sharing your story.
- 26:57We'll share how we're making it to talk to you.
- 26:59Remember, share this podcast with your friends,
- 27:02like it, comment, review it.
- 27:04That would be great.
- 27:05And remember, say, why not today?
- 27:07Why not today?
- 27:08Go ahead.
