- 0:24Speaker 1: on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five. Yeah, Jeff Blagwold
- 0:30Speaker 1: time here on a lovely Monday afternoon. Jeff Legwald, as
- 0:34Speaker 1: always his appearances are must listen radio. He informs us
- 0:38Speaker 1: of what is going on with the Broncos and around
- 0:40Speaker 1: the NFL. Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 0:43Speaker 1: Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start with a job
- 0:46Speaker 1: and end with a career. Leggie. We are one month
- 0:50Speaker 1: out officially today from the NFL Draft. It's April twenty
- 0:54Speaker 1: fourth is round one. Today is the twenty fourth of March.
- 0:59Speaker 1: One of the Broncos need to accomplish in the in
- 1:02Speaker 1: the next four weeks. Here what what are the internal
- 1:07Speaker 1: What do you think the spiciest internal debates are right
- 1:09Speaker 1: now down at the facility?
- 1:12Speaker 3: Well, I mean they're probably all spicy at this point.
- 1:16Speaker 3: This is where they they get everybody's opinion right now.
- 1:19Speaker 3: And you know, like all teams, they're making the pro
- 1:23Speaker 3: day circuit. I mean, cam Ward's Pro day was today,
- 1:26Speaker 3: so uh, you know they've got people out on the
- 1:30Speaker 3: pro day circuit. And this is when you would do
- 1:33Speaker 3: some Top thirty visits in your facility too, So you're
- 1:38Speaker 3: you're dialing in if you're the team, you're dialing in
- 1:40Speaker 3: on the people you're really intrigued by, or the people
- 1:44Speaker 3: you think you need one or two more nuggets of information,
- 1:48Speaker 3: you know, to make that decision.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Leggy, it's a little inside baseball, but you know you've
- 1:53Speaker 1: watched a couple of these drafts with this regime. Now
- 1:57Speaker 1: currently what what is the dynamic ownership Sean Payton, George Peyton,
- 2:03Speaker 1: scouting department and everything else? Like who who gets lead
- 2:08Speaker 1: billing in these discussions? Who has finals? Say? What have
- 2:12Speaker 1: you been able to glean from how this group makes
- 2:14Speaker 1: these choices?
- 2:16Speaker 2: Well, they're like a lot of teams.
- 2:18Speaker 3: The head coach is going to have an awful lot
- 2:20Speaker 3: to say about what the framework is for what kind
- 2:23Speaker 3: of player he wants. Now, the thing that's intriguing here
- 2:28Speaker 3: or a little different these days. Is Sean Payton definitely
- 2:32Speaker 3: works off a Bill Parcells model because that's his mentor
- 2:37Speaker 3: in many ways and coaching and Bill Parcells had a
- 2:40Speaker 3: very definitive idea of what you know, height, weight, size,
- 2:46Speaker 3: speed of prospects at every position should be. There was
- 2:50Speaker 3: a very definitive framework of what they wanted at each spot.
- 2:56Speaker 3: And I think they are a little more defined in
- 3:00Speaker 3: that way with Sean Payton running the show. I think
- 3:03Speaker 3: George Peyton, the GM has worked with so many people
- 3:07Speaker 3: through the years, and you know, George came up from scouting,
- 3:10Speaker 3: all the way through scouting, you know, from the you know,
- 3:14Speaker 3: from the lowest rung of the ladder to be in
- 3:17Speaker 3: a GM.
- 3:19Speaker 2: So those kinds of guys can work with anybody.
- 3:22Speaker 3: They're very good at adjusting, you know, what the scouting
- 3:26Speaker 3: staff needs to find for the for the coaching staff.
- 3:31Speaker 2: And I think that's a big thing too.
- 3:33Speaker 3: And they make they make makeup a big part of
- 3:37Speaker 3: the equation everybody does, but it's a really big part
- 3:40Speaker 3: of the equation here. I think they would they would
- 3:44Speaker 3: lean harder toward a player with the kind of attitude
- 3:49Speaker 3: and and just sort of demeanor they want if the
- 3:53Speaker 3: athleticism is close, whereas some teams lean hard into the
- 3:58Speaker 3: athleticism and say we'll fit a guy.
- 4:01Speaker 4: In Leggy, have the positions, they'll be interested in which
- 4:05Speaker 4: one is the thinnest. Where you may say, hey, pick early,
- 4:09Speaker 4: because once the top is gone, there's not a lot left.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yeah, any I think in some ways, you know, if
- 4:16Speaker 3: they were interested in a corner who could contribute in
- 4:20Speaker 3: some way in the nickel or something, or some of
- 4:24Speaker 3: the edge players, if they wanted another edge player, you know,
- 4:29Speaker 3: depending on what the future of say Benito is here
- 4:32Speaker 3: or any of that. I think those two spots you
- 4:36Speaker 3: better go for the gold early and always offensive tackle.
- 4:41Speaker 3: You know, it's a pretty good class. But if you
- 4:43Speaker 3: want the guys who can really really play for a
- 4:46Speaker 3: long time, those are at the top.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Of the board.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Leggie, as you have been diving into it, where are
- 4:54Speaker 1: you coming down on Luther Burden, the third, the wide
- 4:56Speaker 1: receiver out of Missouri. He's phenomenal prospect, but like you
- 5:02Speaker 1: talked about before, a profile, he doesn't seem to fit
- 5:05Speaker 1: the profile of a Sean Payton wide receiver.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Well, he's got a little size and I think that
- 5:10Speaker 3: that makes him sort of. You know, I think when
- 5:14Speaker 3: you're looking at wide receivers for these guys, you want
- 5:16Speaker 3: to start with the big the big guys and work
- 5:19Speaker 3: back from there. But you know, I like him as
- 5:24Speaker 3: a player. I've talked to some you know, scouts who
- 5:27Speaker 3: really really like him. So the wide receiver over the years,
- 5:33Speaker 3: especially over the last ten to fifteen years of this, uh,
- 5:37Speaker 3: I get more divergent opinions from the evaluators on wide
- 5:42Speaker 3: receivers than I do.
- 5:43Speaker 2: At any other position.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Like you'll talk to one scout and they'll love three,
- 5:49Speaker 3: and then you'll talk to somebody else and they can't
- 5:52Speaker 3: stand those three.
- 5:53Speaker 2: So it's just the weirdest thing ever.
- 5:56Speaker 3: But I think because so many people throw the ball
- 5:58Speaker 3: in college football now that that is perennially one of
- 6:03Speaker 3: the positions where you're going to be able to find
- 6:05Speaker 3: whatever you're looking for in a productive player.
- 6:10Speaker 4: What do you think of the tight end position? Again,
- 6:11Speaker 4: you've talked about how deep it is, but now as
- 6:13Speaker 4: you start to do the top one hundred, how many
- 6:16Speaker 4: guys are you stacking in the middle rounds?
- 6:18Speaker 2: What would be give me.
- 6:19Speaker 4: A couple of guys that might be good targets for
- 6:21Speaker 4: the Broncos if they don't want to use their first
- 6:23Speaker 4: or second round pick on a tight end.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, le Broncos spend an awful lot of
- 6:28Speaker 3: time talking about that. You know, they want the guy
- 6:31Speaker 3: who can become a pretty good blocker as well as
- 6:35Speaker 3: being a receiver. And I think the Ingram signing, at
- 6:39Speaker 3: least in the next couple of years would point them
- 6:42Speaker 3: toward sort of a pretty good receiver who could be
- 6:47Speaker 3: you know, a quality blocker in the run game as well.
- 6:51Speaker 3: And you know, to me, that's that's sort of like
- 6:54Speaker 3: a guy like Mason Taylor from LSU as a player,
- 6:58Speaker 3: I'd look at. Think the local young guy Ferguson, Terrence
- 7:04Speaker 3: Ferguson I really like as a prospect.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I think those are two names I keep an eye on.
- 7:11Speaker 3: And you know, day two, day two especially probably and
- 7:15Speaker 3: then you know that I think the Notre Dame, the
- 7:18Speaker 3: young guy from Notre Dame, Mitchell Evans, I think has
- 7:20Speaker 3: got a good look about him. Maybe that's a late
- 7:24Speaker 3: day two, day three pick, dependent who you talk to.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah, good teams get starters at those spots. Jeff Legwall
- 7:29Speaker 1: of ESPN is with us. We're a month away from
- 7:32Speaker 1: the NFL draft. Leggie brought to you by the International
- 7:35Speaker 1: Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start with
- 7:39Speaker 1: a job and with a career, LEGGI, let's talk about
- 7:42Speaker 1: the quarterback carousel. Aaron Rodgers technically is not a Steeler yet,
- 7:46Speaker 1: Russell Wilson technically is not any team as of yet.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And how is that all going to impact what happens
- 7:52Speaker 1: with cam Ward, what happens with Shador Sanders. Give us
- 7:56Speaker 1: the best Jeff Legwalled forecast that you can when the
- 7:58Speaker 1: dust finally settles on where these quarterbacks will all be.
- 8:02Speaker 2: You know, I think the Rogers things intriguing.
- 8:04Speaker 3: I can't understand how anyone in the NFL could have
- 8:08Speaker 3: watched how that unfolded in New York and then say,
- 8:11Speaker 3: let's hurry up and get that guy in this building.
- 8:14Speaker 3: But you know, it just proves the supply of quarterbacks
- 8:19Speaker 3: will never meet the demand. So I think most people
- 8:24Speaker 3: feel like the Steelers because of the way they're built internally,
- 8:30Speaker 3: resemble green Bay the most of what's out there, you know,
- 8:35Speaker 3: family ownership. You know, green Bay is sort of publicly owned,
- 8:38Speaker 3: but it's run like a family ownership team, you know,
- 8:43Speaker 3: And there's been a lot of talk about is that
- 8:45Speaker 3: the you know, it's ironic that he's looking for what
- 8:49Speaker 3: he had in Green Bay now, but that he's.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Looking for a situation like that.
- 8:54Speaker 3: And I think players all over the league respect Tomlin,
- 8:59Speaker 3: you know, and how he those things and how he
- 9:02Speaker 3: he you know, provides this umbrella for players that you know,
- 9:07Speaker 3: he never makes a public mistake really with players, and
- 9:11Speaker 3: I think players respect that. And I think people in
- 9:15Speaker 3: the league think that's the fit for Rogers, even in
- 9:19Speaker 3: the short term, because it is short term, you're not
- 9:22Speaker 3: so you don't want to.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Give up too much to do it. But I think
- 9:25Speaker 2: most people feel like he will end up in Pittsburgh.
- 9:29Speaker 3: I don't think they see a lot of folks I
- 9:32Speaker 3: know in the league don't see a Brian day Ball
- 9:34Speaker 3: and Aaron Rodgers really gelling. A day Ball runs really hot,
- 9:40Speaker 3: he's fiery, you know, so maybe a Giants you know
- 9:45Speaker 3: that that isn't what's going to happen. But again, I
- 9:48Speaker 3: think most people think Pittsburgh is where he'll land, and
- 9:52Speaker 3: then I think everyone else just falls in after that.
- 9:56Speaker 3: You know, hard for me to believe that the Titans
- 9:59Speaker 3: aren't way cam Ward vigorously were the number one pick.
- 10:03Speaker 3: I mean, there were more people at Miami's pro day
- 10:06Speaker 3: from the Titans than in the Titans building you know,
- 10:09Speaker 3: in Nashville today, So they brought everybody to the Miami's
- 10:14Speaker 3: pro day. So that tells you and I would I
- 10:18Speaker 3: would almost bet you know, a lot of money that
- 10:21Speaker 3: they have a private workout with him tomorrow in some fashion,
- 10:26Speaker 3: or at least some kind of private setting with him tomorrow.
- 10:30Speaker 2: All right, what about kirk cousins.
- 10:32Speaker 4: News comes today he'll waive his no trade clause once
- 10:34Speaker 4: the draft has been completed. Is he gonna find a
- 10:37Speaker 4: new home or do you think he keeps playing poker
- 10:39Speaker 4: in Atlanta?
- 10:41Speaker 3: Well, I mean, you know, that's such a crazy messed
- 10:45Speaker 3: up thing, you know, with Atlanta giving him the deal
- 10:48Speaker 3: last year and then drafting Pennix and now deciding Penix
- 10:52Speaker 3: is the the guy. You know, the only thing in
- 10:54Speaker 3: the Atlanta's favor and all of this is that Penix
- 10:57Speaker 3: is on a rookie deal, so they do have a
- 11:00Speaker 3: little minor flexibility. But again, Aaron Rodgers, Kirk Cousins, these
- 11:05Speaker 3: are short term solutions for teams, you know, almost stop
- 11:10Speaker 3: gaps at this point. And I think, you know, if
- 11:14Speaker 3: you're the player. You're just trying to find the best
- 11:17Speaker 3: playing situation because you're not getting some or at least
- 11:20Speaker 3: I wouldn't think you're getting some long term commitment from somebody.
- 11:24Speaker 3: But you know, again, I think Rogers and Cousins both.
- 11:30Speaker 3: When I talk to personnel people, it comes with some baggage.
- 11:35Speaker 2: You know, what are you really getting?
- 11:36Speaker 3: You know, they're gonna play as they've played, but you know,
- 11:40Speaker 3: are they gonna lead your team and they're gonna be
- 11:42Speaker 3: good for your franchise? And I think ultimately they they
- 11:46Speaker 3: don't have as many choices as they've probably had hoped
- 11:49Speaker 3: they would.
- 11:49Speaker 1: You're a year off of heavy scouting of JJ McCarthy
- 11:52Speaker 1: going into the draft. Is Minnesota making a wise choice,
- 11:57Speaker 1: given how good their roster currently is, to hand it
- 12:01Speaker 1: over to a dude who has yet to play in
- 12:03Speaker 1: a regular season game, you.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Know, Nate, I think that's exactly when you hand it
- 12:08Speaker 3: over to a guy like him when your roster is
- 12:10Speaker 3: really good. You know, I think quarterback prospects regress when
- 12:16Speaker 3: they're asked to do more than they can. And look
- 12:19Speaker 3: at how Caleb Williams played for a franchise that wasn't
- 12:22Speaker 3: ready for him to play in Chicago last year. You
- 12:26Speaker 3: know that offensive line. No rookie quarterbacks should have been
- 12:29Speaker 3: put behind that, you know line that doesn't help you.
- 12:33Speaker 3: If you're gonna play a rookie, you know you should
- 12:37Speaker 3: be able to play him when you have a really
- 12:39Speaker 3: good team.
- 12:40Speaker 2: And I think what helps JJ McCarthy in the scouting.
- 12:45Speaker 3: World is he he played for an NFL like coach
- 12:49Speaker 3: at Michigan and fully understands the sort of playing within
- 12:54Speaker 3: the framework of things, not trying to do too much,
- 12:59Speaker 3: don't be the hero when you know you don't need
- 13:01Speaker 3: to be. And I think everyone respects what Kevin O'Connell
- 13:05Speaker 3: can do with quarterbacks, and I think what he did
- 13:09Speaker 3: with Sam Darnold only helped that reputation immensely. Uh So
- 13:13Speaker 3: I think they'll they'll do right by him, and I
- 13:15Speaker 3: think that could work because of that. And he's a
- 13:18Speaker 3: much better athlete than people have talked about since he's
- 13:21Speaker 3: been out, you know, with the injury, but athletically, he
- 13:25Speaker 3: was one of the best quarterback you know, athlete prospects
- 13:29Speaker 3: coming out.
- 13:30Speaker 1: All right.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Legy wasn't a travel.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Which one wow wow, look at that.
- 13:38Speaker 4: So Nate says he doesn't want it called a lot
- 13:42Speaker 4: of my Cushu friends didn't want it called. We had
- 13:44Speaker 4: a lot of people text in saying they didn't want
- 13:46Speaker 4: that call.
- 13:47Speaker 2: What do you think? Yeah, I don't know. I don't.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I don't think you want it called. You want it
- 13:53Speaker 2: called there?
- 13:54Speaker 1: It's just okay. And here's where I come down on this, Leggy.
- 13:58Speaker 4: I'm a little surprised by Leggy's answer because usually he's
- 14:01Speaker 4: the stickler for the rules.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I don't. I don't want that travel ever called, though,
- 14:05Speaker 1: like you should be able to gather and take two
- 14:08Speaker 1: steps and and take a shot like letter of the law.
- 14:13Speaker 1: How often would we be stopping play to call that travel?
- 14:16Speaker 1: I would, I would, I would hate that and play. Yeah,
- 14:20Speaker 1: and I just I I hate that that became the narrative,
- 14:23Speaker 1: by the way, like you of the teams you saw
- 14:25Speaker 1: last week, of Michigan and BYU who came out of
- 14:28Speaker 1: Denver that are off to the Sweet sixteen, who you
- 14:31Speaker 1: given the best shot to go to an Elite eight?
- 14:33Speaker 1: You got Michigan, who's got to play Auburn now? And
- 14:35Speaker 1: BYU is gonna have their hands full with Natoates and Alabama.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I I will say that BYU Alabama, tams Is
- 14:44Speaker 3: gonna gonna be about the most damn entertaining game you
- 14:47Speaker 3: might see anywhere. But I don't know if it's next
- 14:51Speaker 3: year or two years from now, but b Yu is
- 14:55Speaker 3: going to be a problem for people the way they're built,
- 14:58Speaker 3: the way he's I came a or I spoke to
- 15:01Speaker 3: a lot of people that think that coach was a
- 15:04Speaker 3: great find, Like they thought outside the box a little bit,
- 15:08Speaker 3: and they may have beaten everybody around the curve as
- 15:12Speaker 3: to you know, I think ten years from now, a
- 15:15Speaker 3: lot more teams are gonna be structured like how BYU
- 15:17Speaker 3: does things. And you know, maybe people outside this region
- 15:22Speaker 3: don't realize how deep their pockets are. But I liked
- 15:26Speaker 3: them as a team. I like how they're put together.
- 15:28Speaker 3: I like how he coaches it. I think they're tough
- 15:32Speaker 3: in endgame situations, you know, Michigan. It was odd to
- 15:39Speaker 3: me because he's such a dusky may as such a
- 15:42Speaker 3: you know, a tactician that people respect. But when things
- 15:46Speaker 3: get tight, they sort of they sort of go away
- 15:49Speaker 3: from all the things they do well to get leads
- 15:52Speaker 3: or to be in games, So that that'd be the
- 15:55Speaker 3: only reason I would sort of pick at them moving forward,
- 15:58Speaker 3: And they turned the ball over way too much. Michigan
- 16:01Speaker 3: does so. I guess of the teams I saw about
- 16:04Speaker 3: BYU was the sturdiest.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Yeah, love that team. Love Kevin Young, friend of the program,
- 16:08Speaker 1: and uh yeah, Michigan's gonna have their hands full with
- 16:11Speaker 1: J and I, Broom and Auburn. He's Jeff Legwald everybody.
- 16:14Speaker 1: He was a college hoops reporter last week. Now he's
- 16:16Speaker 1: back on NFL draft duty. We know that he never
- 16:18Speaker 1: actually left though. Leggy, good work man, Thanks Buddy, Thanks Bells.
- 16:22Speaker 2: We'll see it.
