- 0:00You're listening to the Play Therapy Podcast with Dr.
- 0:03Brenna Hicks,
- 0:04your source for centered and focused play therapy coaching.
- 0:08Hi,
- 0:08I'm Dr.
- 0:09Brenna Hicks,
- 0:09The Kid Counselor.
- 0:10This is the Play Therapy Podcast where you get
- 0:12a master class in child-centered play therapy
- 0:15and practical support and application for your
- 0:17work with children and their families.
- 0:19In today's episode,
- 0:20we are finishing out the What's Wrong with Our Field series.
- 0:25And for the final hurrah,
- 0:27we are talking
- 0:28about research.
- 0:30And
- 0:31there's gonna be a,
- 0:32a call to action here,
- 0:34uh,
- 0:34a challenge if you will,
- 0:37because
- 0:38I am concerned
- 0:40about what has gone on in our field related to research in the
- 0:44most recent 20 or so years.
- 0:47So,
- 0:47I want to really
- 0:49address this and hopefully inspire and encourage some of y'all to
- 0:54Step up and,
- 0:55and fill in a little bit of the gap.
- 0:57Before we dive into that,
- 0:58I wanna let y'all know
- 0:59it's like a month away from Jersey,
- 1:02y'all.
- 1:02So,
- 1:03if you've been thinking about coming,
- 1:04I need you to register so that you can save money.
- 1:07I also have a meetup planned on Sunday.
- 1:10So,
- 1:10for all of you podcast listeners and all of you
- 1:13people that are within driving distance to New Jersey.
- 1:17I want y'all to come and hang out with me on Sunday
- 1:20for a meetup.
- 1:21And so that is separate from the conference.
- 1:24That is for anyone that is able to get to
- 1:28the Jersey,
- 1:29New York line
- 1:31for Sunday.
- 1:32I would love to hang out with y'all.
- 1:34And so we'll eat and spend time together and
- 1:37podcast meetups are one of my favorite things that I do across the country.
- 1:40So,
- 1:41if you are able to make it,
- 1:42please make sure that you
- 1:44RSVP so we know you're coming.
- 1:45We can plan for numbers and such.
- 1:48And you can get all of that at playtherapynow.com.
- 1:51Just make sure you scroll down to the meetup section and to the
- 1:55IMCCPT live section
- 1:57for the conference registration.
- 1:59So you can do both on playtherapynow.com.
- 2:02All right.
- 2:03So let's talk about research for a sec.
- 2:06Well,
- 2:07probably longer than a sec.
- 2:08The whole podcast
- 2:09for,
- 2:10for a couple of minutes.
- 2:12This is my
- 2:14I don't want to say that it's like my deepest worry,
- 2:17but
- 2:18this is one of the things that I have
- 2:19really been struggling with because every time I speak,
- 2:23APT required.
- 2:24Now,
- 2:24obviously if it's my own event,
- 2:25this doesn't apply,
- 2:26but if,
- 2:26if I'm trying to get APT approval or CEs or if I speak at an APT event.
- 2:32They require 5 references
- 2:34and 3 of them have to be within the last 5 years.
- 2:38And a lot of what I teach is seminal.
- 2:40A lot of what I teach is foundational.
- 2:40A lot of what I teach is foundational CCPT.
- 2:44And there is nothing
- 2:45in the last 5 years on seminal CCPT stuff.
- 2:49And unfortunately what has happened.
- 2:52is we have decades and decades of research.
- 2:56Almost all of the seminal foundational theoretical research
- 3:02is
- 3:03from decades ago.
- 3:05And thankfully,
- 3:06we do have meta-analytic research.
- 3:09That has looked at studies across decades
- 3:11and said,
- 3:12here's the summary of all of this.
- 3:15That has been useful,
- 3:16but as far as new research
- 3:19proving efficacy of the model,
- 3:22diving deep into the theory of the model
- 3:25and actually having data to support what we're doing.
- 3:29It's a huge gap.
- 3:31Now,
- 3:32what
- 3:32has been put out,
- 3:34because it's not like there's no research on CCPT,
- 3:37although I would argue less than directive models for sure,
- 3:40but there is
- 3:42Data and research coming out on CCPT,
- 3:45but
- 3:46standardly,
- 3:47what we're seeing is CCPT with this population.
- 3:51CCPT with this unique scenario,
- 3:54CCPT with this case study,
- 3:54CCPT with this case study,
- 3:57CCPT with
- 3:59this population with this background with this diagnosis with this whatever.
- 4:04So
- 4:04what we've done is we've taken the model
- 4:08and we've proven that it works in this
- 4:10rare scenario.
- 4:13But I would argue that's not universalizable.
- 4:15I would argue that's not generalizable.
- 4:18And the concern is
- 4:21we're not putting any research out that says
- 4:24CCPT
- 4:26works.
- 4:27CCPT works.
- 4:28CCPT foundationally.
- 4:31We can prove it.
- 4:32CCPT seminally,
- 4:34we can prove it.
- 4:35And
- 4:36I think that that is doing a disservice because I
- 4:39would argue that more people would be fired up about CCPT
- 4:43if we had all kinds of research being published saying this is more effective.
- 4:48This is my
- 4:50pipe dream,
- 4:51my white picket fence,
- 4:53magic wish,
- 4:53genie kind of scenario.
- 4:56In the next couple of years,
- 4:57I want several studies to be published,
- 5:01new,
- 5:01not meta-analytic,
- 5:02new research.
- 5:05Where they did therapists and children
- 5:08with directive activities
- 5:10and therapists
- 5:11and children with non-directive activities
- 5:13did pre and post tests for both.
- 5:16Blind observation rating.
- 5:20And they proved that CCPT is more effective.
- 5:23Now,
- 5:24let's go back to meta-analytic and you might say,
- 5:26Brenna,
- 5:27how could you say that?
- 5:28Well,
- 5:28let's go back to meta-analytic research for a second.
- 5:31We know
- 5:32because of the meta-analytic data,
- 5:34we already know it's proven
- 5:36that humanistic
- 5:38approaches are more effective than non-humanistic.
- 5:41So this isn't a stretch.
- 5:43This is already supported in literature.
- 5:46I want there to be
- 5:48a current study.
- 5:50Where
- 5:51we take kids with therapists that do directive stuff,
- 5:54and then we take kids with therapists that do CCPT.
- 5:58And we look at outcomes.
- 5:59We could do the CBCL for pre and post test.
- 6:02We could do parent rating,
- 6:04teacher rating,
- 6:05whatever.
- 6:06We,
- 6:06we could figure out what assessment we would do to evaluate this.
- 6:10But
- 6:12If we did a pre and post test
- 6:14to measure something specifically,
- 6:16maybe it's externalizing behaviors,
- 6:16maybe it's externalizing behaviors,
- 6:18maybe it's internalizing behaviors,
- 6:20whether
- 6:21I,
- 6:21I'm not sure what we would want to measure.
- 6:22There's so many options,
- 6:23I guess.
- 6:25But man,
- 6:25if we're putting that kind of research out,
- 6:28Proving
- 6:29currently
- 6:31that CCPT is more effective.
- 6:34That gives us so much.
- 6:36Clout,
- 6:37it gives us so much standing.
- 6:37It gives us so much standing.
- 6:39It gives us so much defense.
- 6:41And you know me,
- 6:42my phrase is quiet confidence.
- 6:44I am not one that feels like we have to beat on people's doors
- 6:47and get megaphones and shout for mountain tops.
- 6:50I don't think that that's our way.
- 6:52That's,
- 6:52that's not CCPT aligned at all.
- 6:55Results speak for themselves.
- 6:57I've had way too many people
- 7:00go from directive
- 7:01to CCPT
- 7:03and tell me their stories.
- 7:06To
- 7:06even question whether or not CCPT is more effective.
- 7:09I,
- 7:10I,
- 7:10I have no doubt whatsoever.
- 7:12Not only do research studies prove it,
- 7:14but anecdotally and experientially
- 7:16it has been proven.
- 7:18I know that CCPT is more effective.
- 7:19I don't need to
- 7:20make a big to do about that.
- 7:23But I think that if we have research that says,
- 7:26look,
- 7:27here's a comparison study.
- 7:29We have directive stuff here,
- 7:31we have non-directive stuff here,
- 7:31we have non-directive stuff here,
- 7:31non-directive stuff here,
- 7:32non-directive works.
- 7:34That is what elevates the field.
- 7:36That is what takes us to the next level.
- 7:38That's what
- 7:39ensures that more therapists in grad school right
- 7:42now or even thinking about starting grad school,
- 7:44they're gonna be taught CCPT.
- 7:48I mean,
- 7:48I would hope so.
- 7:50Again,
- 7:50maybe that's my
- 7:51both my fingers and toes crossed.
- 7:54I don't know.
- 7:54I would hope that that would mean
- 7:57that CCPT would become more
- 7:59part of the dialogue,
- 8:00more part of the training,
- 8:02because
- 8:03us right now as CCPTs,
- 8:05we know.
- 8:07I would like the world to know and I would like the
- 8:09world to know and I would like the systems that are in place
- 8:11that are not supportive of CCPT.
- 8:14I would like that to change too.
- 8:15That's the other thing y'all.
- 8:16If we put research out,
- 8:19systems are gonna have to start acknowledging
- 8:22that this is
- 8:23appropriate.
- 8:24So the academic system,
- 8:26the legal system,
- 8:27the medical system,
- 8:27the medical system,
- 8:28the third-party managed care system,
- 8:31all these things that are very anti-CCPT right now,
- 8:35we start cranking out research talking about how
- 8:38proven effective it is.
- 8:40They're gonna have to acquiesce.
- 8:44So
- 8:44I think our greatest
- 8:47Accomplishment in the next 5 or so years
- 8:50for our field to change what I perceive
- 8:52to change what I perceive to be the things that are wrong
- 8:56is to start cranking out research
- 8:58that shows how effective CCPT is,
- 9:00not with unique subsets and diagnosis and whatever.
- 9:04I mean,
- 9:04look,
- 9:04I'm thrilled.
- 9:05In the last few years we've actually had quite a few studies emerge
- 9:09that CCPT is effective with ASD.
- 9:11That's a huge boost in our arm.
- 9:14I mean,
- 9:14I'm thrilled
- 9:15that we have proven now that CCPT is effective for kids on the spectrum.
- 9:20We needed that research,
- 9:21but
- 9:22we don't need a whole bunch of studies
- 9:24like,
- 9:24oh,
- 9:25here's one case study with
- 9:27a child with 4 ACEs that lives in rural Montana that is biracial.
- 9:32Like,
- 9:33the more we
- 9:34go all these specific things,
- 9:37the harder it is for us to say,
- 9:39but we know this works across the board.
- 9:41So what I'm hoping for
- 9:43is that from a foundational level,
- 9:45a theoretical level,
- 9:47we start cranking out research that says,
- 9:49yes,
- 9:50this is the most effective approach for children 3 to 12.
- 9:55And we get a whole bunch of that
- 9:57out in the world.
- 9:59I think that changes everything.
- 10:00So,
- 10:01if you are someone that would like to be involved in research,
- 10:03if you would like to,
- 10:05if you're gonna be a PhD student soon
- 10:07or you're thinking about doing a dissertation
- 10:09or
- 10:10you would just like to participate in a study and be a co-author
- 10:13on something that gets published,
- 10:15reach out to me.
- 10:16We have so many studies that people have mentioned they're interested in.
- 10:20We're actually trying to kind of aggregate
- 10:22like a research hub
- 10:24where we can
- 10:25put people together.
- 10:26In other words,
- 10:27You know,
- 10:27someone in Georgia says,
- 10:28hey,
- 10:29I'm interested in
- 10:30conducting research,
- 10:31but like,
- 10:31I'm not gonna write the article.
- 10:33And then someone else says,
- 10:34hey,
- 10:35I can't conduct the research,
- 10:36but I'd be happy to write and submit to IJPT.
- 10:39So what we're gonna try to do is kind of put pieces together
- 10:42where people can sync up and say,
- 10:44oh,
- 10:44I'm interested in that research as well.
- 10:46And then,
- 10:47you know,
- 10:47we actually kind of have like a
- 10:49clearing house,
- 10:50if you will,
- 10:51for all things related to CCPT research.
- 10:54So reach out to me,
- 10:55you know,
- 10:55at the very least,
- 10:56we'll add you to the list as we get this going and we'll keep you updated.
- 10:59But
- 11:00I think this is what our field needs
- 11:02deeply and greatly
- 11:04is people to start saying,
- 11:05you know what,
- 11:06I want to contribute to the literature
- 11:08on how effective CCPT is.
- 11:10So hopefully,
- 11:11that's some of you.
- 11:13With an audience this size,
- 11:14it has to be some of you.
- 11:15I'm believing it.
- 11:16All right,
- 11:17I love y'all.
- 11:17Thanks for hanging out with me.
- 11:18We'll talk again soon.
- 11:19Bye.
