- 0:00And then you talked about shrinking.
- 0:01Let's go there because that is so real.
- 0:03And you can see it on an embodied level.
- 0:05Yeah.
- 0:05Can you tell us more about how we can take up more space
- 0:10literally and not feel this shrinking?
- 0:14Even the way we use our phones, we're always trying to like...
- 0:17It's, yeah, it's very, yeah.
- 0:19What's it called?
- 0:20I think it's called Foneck or something like that.
- 0:21Oh, yeah, I think that's the way it's done.
- 0:23But it is, it's the shrinking.
- 0:25And okay, I'll give you a few really beautiful exercises
- 0:28that I like to, I see my interaction with the world
- 0:33as like play.
- 0:34When you see things more as play, it takes the pressure off
- 0:40and it takes the expectation of the outcome off
- 0:42because you're just playing.
- 0:44Yes.
- 0:45So it's fine, like it's fine.
- 0:46Unless you're very, very right to what I'm looking for,
- 0:50competitive.
- 0:51You might have some issues.
- 0:53But one thing that I really love to do,
- 0:57and it sounds so, it sounds so small,
- 1:01but yet it's so powerful that aren't of allowing,
- 1:05like allowing yourself.
- 1:06So for me, I'm a music babe, obviously.
- 1:11But like, if I hear a song and I'm out in public
- 1:15and I'm listening to my music, I allow myself to move.
- 1:20Instead of keeping it like, okay, like this is the most I can do
- 1:23because I'm in public
- 1:25and it's not acceptable for me to be expressive in public.
- 1:28When I see people and they're singing to the top of their,
- 1:31I'm like, freedom, freedom,
- 1:33because you are using your free will to the max right now
- 1:38and you're just expressing yourself
- 1:40and being at peace with people
- 1:42maybe perceiving you in a certain way.
- 1:43So that is the first thing when you're listening to a song.
- 1:46If you feel like you want to get a foot involved
- 1:48and tap your foot, if you feel like you want to kind of,
- 1:50I'm a bit of a hand girl sometimes, I'm like,
- 1:53I'm like, you know, the little music County,
- 1:54I'm like, you know, I'm giving a little shawl down people
- 1:57and I'm like, you know, or sometimes I'll like sing
- 2:01and I'm like, like a little mind.
- 2:04So that's like a great one for allowing yourself
- 2:07to be seen and taken at more space.
- 2:09Yes.
- 2:09And another one, and now this is a bit controversial.
- 2:13Take us there.
- 2:14But I noticed, I don't know with in British culture,
- 2:19I'm gonna say British culture because I feel like it is
- 2:21or etiquette, let's say, we apologize a lot.
- 2:24I don't know whether you, like...
- 2:25South African, too, but colonial.
- 2:27Yeah.
- 2:28And so, especially as a black woman,
- 2:31I found I apologize a lot when it's not me.
- 2:34So even if you're in public and you're in your walking
- 2:38and maybe like you slightly getting in someone's path
- 2:41or there in your path, I was noticing that I was like,
- 2:43oh, sorry, sorry.
- 2:44And I was like, but why am I saying sorry?
- 2:48There's no need for me to say sorry.
- 2:52There's no need.
- 2:53So, not from a place of, I'm gonna stand in you.
- 2:57But just from a place of, okay, we're just two humans
- 3:00walking and we've just ended up in each other's path.
- 3:05Or instead of if someone bumps into me,
- 3:07me being like, oh, I'm so sorry.
- 3:09I just hold the line and like, give someone a smile
- 3:12but I don't need to be so apologetic for something
- 3:15that I'm not doing, you know?
- 3:18So that's a really beautiful one
- 3:19for just allowing yourself to be like,
- 3:21I don't need to apologize for being in this space.
- 3:23I'm just here and I have a right to be here
- 3:25like everyone else, you know?
- 3:29And one more, I would say with your movement.
- 3:35Now, I always say start at home
- 3:37because it feels like the safest place.
- 3:40But if you start at home and there's a move
- 3:43that you like to do, that you notice
- 3:45that you keep returning back to,
- 3:47kind of call that like your motif.
- 3:49Taking it from your home into like a public space,
- 3:54whether that's at a party or something like that
- 3:56and actually intentionally leaning into the movement
- 4:01that made that you were using at home
- 4:03that made you feel comfortable
- 4:05but taking it into a space where it's completely new
- 4:07and different.
- 4:09That just allows you to take up space a little bit more
- 4:12because even when I see, I can normally tell by the way
- 4:17that someone holds their body and themselves
- 4:19potentially how they move before I even start working with them.
- 4:25Because a lot of the time people,
- 4:27and I love obviously I love my dancers, you know?
- 4:30But you like got it unlocked, like you're like,
- 4:33you're like cool, you're open to expressing and exploring
- 4:35but I really love working with people
- 4:38that are building this new and juicy relationship
- 4:40with themselves.
- 4:41And so a lot of people that I work with,
- 4:45it's like you're rigid.
- 4:47But not as in you're just as in you're rigid
- 4:50in different areas of your life
- 4:52and it's translating to your movement.
- 4:56Do you know what I mean?
- 4:56I do.
- 4:58So it's like, oh, or again, you're shrinking.
- 5:02Where are you shrinking in other areas of your life?
- 5:07Because dances like a mirror.
- 5:09That's why I love it so much because it shows us, you know?
- 5:14And often because people think it has to be so performative,
- 5:18they're getting the, again, intentionality.
- 5:23Why are you dancing?
- 5:27Why are you dancing?
- 5:28If you're dancing because you want to be a professional dancer
- 5:30and you need to train, that's completely different.
- 5:33But there are, there are all traumas
- 5:35within the dancing industry as well because again,
- 5:36how you look, you're not good enough,
- 5:38thisworthiness.
- 5:39But if you're simply dancing for recreation,
- 5:43recreationally and for self-connection and community,
- 5:46you don't need to be carrying all these expectations of like,
- 5:49oh, it has to look like, it doesn't have to look like anything.
- 5:52It gets to look the way you want it to.
- 5:55And that's where people get confused because they're like,
- 5:58oh, you know, or if I'm teaching a piece of choreography,
- 6:02oh, I couldn't get it.
- 6:03It's not divided in conquer.
- 6:05It's okay.
- 6:05It's okay if you didn't get it.
- 6:07Because the aim of the session is joy.
- 6:11If the aim of the session was slay the movement
- 6:13and get on stage and give me a five, six, seven, eight,
- 6:16it would be a different story, but it's not.
- 6:19And so I think with anyone introducing themselves
- 6:23to movement, they're not the worst,
- 6:25but I don't think it's very supportive to look at people
- 6:28who have been dancing for years
- 6:30and just find a nice piece of music.
- 6:33Put it on, start to explore and start there instead
- 6:37of being like, I want to learn this move
- 6:38and that move and that move.
- 6:40Because again, within the dance industry,
- 6:41what happens is when, also when you're training,
- 6:44you are obviously taught specific movements and choreography,
- 6:48but then a lot of dancers can't freestyle.
- 6:51They really struggle.
- 6:52I'm not going to say can't, they challenge their struggle
- 6:55because I can, but again, it's a mental.
- 6:58And so it's like, I remember one woman
- 7:02that I worked with, blindfold, she had to take it off
- 7:06because the element of control.
- 7:07She was like, I need to see, I need to see.
- 7:09And it's like, there's, you need to trust, not see.
- 7:13You know?
- 7:14Yeah, it's so interesting.
- 7:18Wow, ooh, ooh, ooh.
- 7:21There was so much magic there.
- 7:23I think this idea of releasing control
- 7:27and the dance is a mirror, let's start there.
- 7:29That was such an incredible insight and window into
- 7:33how we can all deepen our understanding of what dance is.
- 7:36I think that really resonates where if you feel like
- 7:39you're an embarrassing person,
- 7:41that's going to manifest in, oh, I'm an embarrassing dancer.
- 7:45Or if you're like, it's not safe to be embarrassing
- 7:48or to cringe at myself, that's going to manifest as,
- 7:51I'm going to shrink myself because I'm afraid
- 7:55of showing up in that way that makes me feel ashamed
- 7:58because of conditioning shame.
- 8:00Ooh, big word.
- 8:01Conditioning trauma, childhood and expectations
- 8:05and all of these, all of these things.
- 8:06So I love that everything that you're sharing so, so much
- 8:09because I feel like also earlier you said that dance is a prayer.
- 8:14And I think that possibility, not all of us experience
- 8:18as like accessible to us.
- 8:20And that it is accessible because we all have bodies.
- 8:22We have a body you can use.
- 8:23Yes, and so what you're inviting us into
- 8:25with more playfulness, more allowing, you said,
- 8:29that's such an incredible word.
- 8:30You know, if I am judged, can I allow that?
- 8:34If I want to be more playful, can I allow that?
- 8:37Can I be a space of allowance for myself?
- 8:39And I think in dance, many of us come up with the fact
- 8:41that we're not spaces of allowance.
- 8:43Yeah.
- 8:44I think also something I'll say is,
- 8:46I feel like such an incredible aspect
- 8:48of various black cultures across the world is dance.
- 8:52Yeah.
- 8:53And then, and I think that's amazing.
- 8:55And it's such a ancestral practice, tradition, gift,
- 9:00which is so beautiful and needs to be continued
- 9:03to be celebrated and more spaces, I think, you know,
- 9:06all across the world are so important for movements
- 9:09and for black communities to move.
- 9:11And we've always done that.
- 9:12But then I also want to say for the awkward black girls
- 9:15that if you struggle with feeling confident in your movement,
- 9:20they can also be that additional shame of like,
- 9:22oh, I should be able to dance.
- 9:24Yeah.
- 9:25Exactly, I feel that way often where I'm like,
- 9:27I'm coming home to the joy of dance rather than the excellence
- 9:31or the being able to embody certain things, you know what I mean?
- 9:36And trying to become a space of allowing myself
- 9:40to play and to try, like I'm South African.
- 9:42South Africans are incredible.
- 9:44Amapiano is incredible.
- 9:47He's been like, oh my god, like amazing.
- 9:49And also, like, I have a lot of shame
- 9:51that I cannot move the same in that way, yes, let's say,
- 9:55or, and then I'm like, oh, I don't get to dance to the song
- 9:58because I don't know exactly how to embody that in print.
- 10:02And I mean, it's truly divine expression.
- 10:04It's spiritual, it's cosmic, it's beautiful and bold and brilliant,
- 10:11and also an energetic signature of a culture,
- 10:13because it also happens both at an individual and a cultural level.
- 10:16And I've just, wow, I'm in awe.
- 10:18But then sometimes I think we lead feeling
- 10:22on the outside of something looking into it,
- 10:24stop us from even stepping a toe,
- 10:27because we're like, if I can't dive in gracefully and be it,
- 10:30become one with it, I'm just don't get to do it at all.
- 10:33So you're really speaking to me to many of us.
- 10:36And so I'm just, wow, I mean, oh, I'm so grateful.
- 10:38I want to give you something.
- 10:41It is inherent to you when you are speaking.
- 10:44It makes me a bit emotional, actually,
- 10:46because it is inherent to you.
- 10:49You're already embodied, because it's your of the people,
- 10:54like it's your blood, doesn't have to look.
- 10:57And that's the thing, like, the looking,
- 10:59exactly what you said, the looking,
- 11:01you can do the movement, cool.
- 11:05You can do our movement, but embody in it.
- 11:09It's not even about the movement.
- 11:10You know, like sometimes, I'll give an example.
- 11:14You can have two dancers that are both amazing
- 11:17in their own right.
- 11:19One is giving you backflips, tricks,
- 11:21this and they're amazing.
- 11:24One is not doing any tricks, but you can feel it here.
- 11:29And when you feel it here, that's what the souls resonate with.
- 11:34That's the resonance, that's the relating.
- 11:36And you'll automatically be drawn to that,
- 11:39but because you can feel their heart.
- 11:41And so to you and any other person
- 11:44that doesn't feel like they're good enough,
- 11:45it if it is in your heart, that's all that matters.
- 11:49Like, as long as you feel it in your heart
- 11:51and in your body, that is all that matters.
- 11:56You are more than enough and worthy and inherent
- 11:59to being in every space, especially that embodies
- 12:04and is the movement of your people and your culture.
- 12:07You don't have to, you know?
- 12:12In a child, older child,
- 12:14all of us received that.
- 12:15That was so juicy and generous.
- 12:17Thank you. I really received that and that resonates.
- 12:20That's so stunning and I've, I have felt that, you know,
- 12:24and what you said, where it's about them,
- 12:25you also are one with the music.
- 12:27You feel it, you feel that resonance,
- 12:30you feel that connection.
- 12:32And I really do feel that with Amapiano
- 12:34and with other, you know, my own cultures and countries music.
- 12:38And so it's beautiful.
- 12:40I love that you said it's inherent.
