- Rachel K: Welcome to the Travel Agency New Year podcast. Thanks for coming back. I'm your host, Rachel K. And if you don't know who I am, you just found me, head on over to elevate with Rachel K.com to learn more about how I can help your travel agency business. I am on day 153. Whoop whoop. Not even halfway through the year, folks. And I think I've done an episode about this topic before, but I wanted to kind of touch on it again. And this is detaching from the outcome. So we are about a month away from closing out halfway through the year, okay. When this episode originally airs, because this all started January first. So this episode is like June 2nd, okay? And You may or may not be roles regardless of how well you're doing, or maybe not so how well you're doing with your travel agency. I really want to stress the importance of being able to detach from the outcome and focus more on the experience of building and creating and being, not just like doing to get a result, if that makes sense to you. Why do we need to detach from the outcome? When you are so attached to the outcome, you tend to not you, I'm not I don't know, I don't know you, but people in general. It's all your fault. No, I don't know. When a person is so obsessed with achieving a very specific outcome and relying on it so heavily, they tend to take over an exorbitant amount of control. And that ends up being a form of self-sabotage because they can't just detach and be okay with failure or success, not having it exactly their way. And they end up doing things to attempt to prevent said failure. They get overwhelmed and they'll procrastinate and start living out the self-sabotage, and then they don't achieve those goals. And then they chuck it up to ⁓ I just must be inherently a failure, right? Now this came to me. ⁓ this episode idea and the next following few episodes, I think, came to me. After a really weird wedding experience that I had. And I was like, all right, I'm gonna film these and put it out there. And this didn't have anything to do with me. I I have I'm still working on detaching from the outcome. ⁓ if you care about my personal life at all. No, you don't, but I'm gonna talk about it anyway. so I have an opportunity to ⁓ relocate. I can live anywhere I want to. And so I'm reconsidering where I'm going to be living. I have never liked where I currently live. It's just been like a place I'm stuck. It's just never felt right to me. Okay. And again, if you don't know me very well, I have reverted back to Catholicism. So I'm doing a lot of prayer and I'm leaning into like the contemplative prayer and meditative prayer a lot, a lot. ⁓ To try and figure out what the heck God's plan is. I can't figure it all out. He's never gonna give me the full he's never gonna be like, do exactly this, right? But an interesting part was I was praying about the stress of moving. And ⁓ I gotta take all these things with me. And I gotta make sure they're gonna fit in my new place. And it's like halfway across the country. And I was praying about all of that. And then I heard, you don't have to take all this stuff with you. What if you had to leave it? Like you're not ready to do it. You're not detaching from the outcome. Because in my head, I had this vision of having a similar sized home. And a similar size lot in a similar neighborhood, just basically taking the little area that I'm in right now and uprooting it all and scooching it over a few states. Is what I had in my head. And then I heard, no, you need to detach from the outcome. You could end up living in a studio apartment. You could end up in a much larger home. And you could end up needing to, because I was like trying to like. Thoroughly plan all these things and have everything in place. And this was while I was doing like a contemplative prayer session and I heard you might have to go tomorrow. You might have to go tom in an hour. Are you okay with that? And I was like, but Lord. ⁓ what how am I gonna get my piano there? How am I gonna get all this stuff there? And he was like, you gotta detach. You gotta detach from everything. You gotta be okay with everything that you've worked on rebuilding the last few years not coming with you. And you're not ready to go unless you're ready to detach from all of those things. And so that also kind of led me down this road of this episode of detaching from the outcome. So there are going to be times in your evolution as a travel advisor where you're going to be very content with where you are. ⁓ And it's not always gonna be like that. It's not always gonna be just like this nice even wave, not wave, but like level. It's not gonna be calm waters. There's gonna be storms. And if you are so focused on maintaining that stability that you've built, it really can take away from your ability to adapt because then you become stubborn and say, No, this is how I've done things. This is what works. And it may not work in certain situations. So you're like, none of this episodes make sense, Rachel. I don't care. I need you to pick up on what I'm putting down. So let's say you have been doing like the success circle program, or you've been taking all these courses and you're like, I'm gonna do all these things, and you're still like riding the struggle bus. It's because you're working so hard to create a very specific outcome. And you may be investing so much into programs and education and trainings because you're like, I want to be exactly like this advisor I look up to as an example. I'm going to do exactly what they do. But just because you're doing exactly what they do doesn't mean you're gonna get the same results as them because you're not in the exact same timeline. Like if they started what they were doing five to ten years ago, fifteen years ago, twenty years ago, you're not gonna be in the same timeline as them. ⁓ you really need to consider If you are going to be an investing, like in any kind of like trainings and you're like, ⁓ I want to be exactly like this, like consider that individual instructor. where are they now? And where were they when they were in your position? You're like, what? That doesn't make any sense. I don't even care. If this doesn't make sense to you. So I have one student in several of my courses that shows up regularly and they are kind of more of like, ⁓ doom and gloom, nothing's working for me mindset. And I realized what their age was. And I was like, hey, did you know you're the same age as me when I finally had my big breakthrough, my overnight success, quote unquote, in the travel industry? And they were like, What? And I was like, Yeah, you're you're six years behind me. And they're like, Well, I've been doing this for so many years and I feel like nothing's working. I can't remember how many years they were into it, but I know it's like at least two years, and I was like, Yeah, it's about where I was, and you need to really just focus on why you're doing this and do the work for the why and not worry about making a certain amount of money. Yes. I do think it's very important to have those goals so that when you are kind of like struggling, you're like, ⁓ I still need to keep working. And also when you're doing very well, you can be like, ⁓ I surpassed my goals, not necessarily rest in your laurels. And then just like get lazy about it. So all of this is to say, 10 minutes later of crazy ramblings. Please understand how important it is to not be tied to the result. You may not hit every quarterly or annual goal. Like, yeah, would it be quarterly or quarter? You may not hit every goal you have in your business in terms of revenue, in terms of people served. You may not stay in the same niche. You have to be able to be adaptable. And if you are so stuck on creating a very specific outcome. You're not gonna be able to adapt. You're gonna have a hard time. You're gonna have a bad time. You're gonna end up probably quitting. I don't know. So, back to my reference with a wedding in particular. I've had this happen a few times. And the next few episodes are gonna like kind of touch on the whole destination wedding thing. So if you're not interested, just skip. I've had The brides that I typically work with are not the standard destination wedding bride. And I am seeing more and more as there is the generational shift and Gen Z is becoming adults, and they are the ones now, primarily like for my ICA, they're like hitting that age rather than it used to be like the younger millennials for a time. Like millennials and then younger millennials millennials announced Gen Z. And I have a lot of theories on all of this. So the couples that I have that are the younger millennials slash older Gen Z that I've had in like the last probably maybe two years, there are those who are we want a very specific look, but we understand nothing's gonna be perfect and we're fine with that because they tend to be a little bit more emotionally secure. But one thing I have noticed in particular is even if they're more laissez faire in terms of how they want their wedding to look and like the cost and the investment of the wedding, regardless of whether or not they're laissez faire or just more authoritative type personalities, because those are two opposite ends of the spectrum. They both want to exerce both types of destination wedding clients want to have far more control over everything than ⁓ my clients that I worked on worked with when they were like millennials age group. As an example, part of my wedding planning services, I have a lot of templates that I give to them. To help them with their planning process. That's part of my fee. I've got like a budget tracker, a guest list template, a seating chart, a day of timeline template, all kinds of things that we work on together. And they keep it in a folder and I onboard them all. And I'm like, this is where everything's located in the Google Drive. You can edit all of this information. Here's how to fill this in, because I've had people not fill in the guest list template properly. So I'm like, this is how it needs to be filled in. ⁓ and then like this is the seating chart, this is how this works, here's how you can use the budget tracker. And like I said, it's only been like the last two or three years. And I've had more and more couples where the bride does not want to give up the information because she wants to have all the control. So I've had couples who are like, I don't like your guest list template. I'm gonna make my own. And I'm like, well, this inconveniences me and it takes away from my process of how I do everything. Cause what I do with the guest list template is I download it as a CSV and put it into my email software, CRM software, so I can start emailing all the guests when the invitations go out. ⁓ when there's dates that I have in place to have things finalized, they want to push that deadline because they wanna make sure everyone else is happy. And it's a it's a really strange thing. And then regardless of how little or how much planning I am involved with. The ones who cannot detach from the outcome and have this weird I saw it on TikTok or Instagram vision. So this is how it must be for my wedding. And they can't just like go with the flow, the harder the time they have actually enjoying their wedding day. And I'm saying all this for a number of reasons. Like, understand the changing depot demographic for destination wedding couples. A, why am I so nasally? Anyway. And B, you may be doing the same thing in your business. You may be Saying, I want this exact outcome, like I want exactly $180,000 a year in gross revenue. And maybe you hit that last year, or maybe that's just like your goal. And the refusal to adapt to the changing travel market, or you're following trends that aren't really going to help you in your business. You're just kinda like following it because everyone else says, ⁓ this is really cool, you know? And it you're marketed for a specific outcome with those things. And you can't detach from it. So then you start to build a presentation, you aren't hitting those goals. And then you start to self sabotage your business. This is why you need to let go, understand exactly why you are doing this for your career right now. It doesn't have to be a forever thing, but why is this your career right now? Why do you love to do what you do and focus on the why and being involved in the process of fulfilling your why rather than focusing on I have to have X number of groups, I have to have X number of people I serve or trips booked. Or revenue generated. Yes, the revenue generated, not like all those things are important data points to consider to maintain your business, especially when you understand your your cash flow needs, right? And also if you are able to maintain your business. Why do I sound so nasally? It's fine. If you're able to maintain your business. That sounds so weird in my head right now. There's no reason to continue like upping the ante. And even when you are up in the ante, that means you are scaling your business and you cannot be doing the same things and you must be able to adapt. And I see a lot of advisors that I'm mentoring that don't want to make those adaptations for the scaling and they want to keep everything exactly the same, but then they're wondering why their revenue is going down. Because it's just not it's not really feasible. It's not a process that's necessarily scalable. And they're so obsessed with the outcome that their clients have or the outcome in their own business that they just kind of get stagnant. So there you go. Twenty minutes basically of me rambling on about detaching from the outcome. You're welcome. I hope it was somewhat entertaining. Probably not. This is not my best episode. If you know someone that's like struggling with adaptability, adapt. Adaptability. Share this episode with them because a lot of that refusal to adapt is often tied to requiring a specific outcome. And when you refuse to adapt, you start to sabotage. Okay? Have some compromise. You're okay. Right? Have a great day. Thanks for listening. Bye.
