Speaker 1: You need to present a photo ID, to buy a beard,
• 0:03
Speaker 1: a board a plane, and to do so many other
• 0:05
Speaker 1: things that are part of American life.
• 0:07
Speaker 2: Why not to vote?
• 0:08
Speaker 1: I think great American the great number of American people
• 0:11
Speaker 1: agree completely with this that you should have to have
• 0:14
Speaker 1: a photo ID and be a citizen in order to vote.
• 0:18
Speaker 1: The Save America Act is the best way to secure
• 0:22
Speaker 1: and safely provide elections that represent the viewpoints of the
• 0:26
  Speaker 1: American people.
• 0:28
Speaker 3: You're listening to the forty seven Morning Update with Ben ferguson.
• 0:31
Speaker 4: Good Wednesday morning. It's nice to have you with us
• 0:33
Speaker 4: on the forty seven Morning Update, and it excites me
• 0:36
Speaker 4: to say this. The Save America Act is finally on
• 0:41
Speaker 4: the floor of the Senate. So what is going to
• 0:44
Speaker 4: happen next. I've got all the details for you, including
• 0:47
Speaker 4: what Donald Trump said and what Senator Cruz said about
• 0:50
Speaker 4: how this is working its way through the Senate Republican leadership.
• 0:55
Speaker 4: It's the forty seven Morning Update and it starts right now.
• 0:58
Speaker 4: Story number one is a big win for election integrity.
• 1:02
Speaker 4: The Save Act is heading to the Senate for with
• 1:05
Speaker 4: a lot of Republicans that are excited about it. The
• 1:08
Speaker 4: problem is there's a couple of Republicans that are not
• 1:12
Speaker 4: wanting to play ball on the issue, which is truly
• 1:15
Speaker 4: frustrating and also shocking. The President United States of America
• 1:19
Speaker 4: at the White House saying this about the Save Act
• 1:22
Speaker 4: moving to the Senate finally for real action.
• 1:26
Speaker 5: The biggest thing coming up is to Save America Act
• 1:29
Speaker 5: in the Senate. That's a voter ID and proof of
• 1:34
Speaker 5: citizenship and no mail in ballots. You know, corrupt mail
• 1:38
Speaker 5: in ballots. We're the only country in the world that
• 1:40
Speaker 5: does it that way, corrupt as hell. And then we
• 1:43
Speaker 5: added two more. We're going to be I think they're
• 1:46
Speaker 5: going to be hitting a couple of more. One is
• 1:48
Speaker 5: no men in women in sports. That seems like an
• 1:51
Speaker 5: easy one. I believe that's ninety nine percent. And no
• 1:57
Speaker 5: transgender mutilization of all our children none. That's only polling
• 2:04
Speaker 5: at ninety eight percent, Speaker, So hopefully the Senate's going
• 2:08
Speaker 5: to be able to get that. You can't ask for
• 2:11
Speaker 5: five better things, I think in terms of it's and
• 2:15
Speaker 5: it's not politics, it's really good for it's so good
• 2:18
Speaker 5: for our nation. I mean, who would not have voter ID,
• 2:20
Speaker 5: who would not have a proof of citizenship? And the
• 2:25
Speaker 5: only people who would want not to have that, or
• 2:28
Speaker 5: people that want to cheat. It's very very simple.
• 2:30
Speaker 2: We can't let that happen.
• 2:32
  Speaker 5: Now.
• 2:32
Speaker 4: You notice there that the President is challenging the Senate
• 2:36
Speaker 4: on multiple issues, saying it's not just a Save Act,
• 2:38
Speaker 4: but also transgender sports issue as well and protecting children
• 2:43
Speaker 4: from mutilation. Now, after months of pushing and negotiations and
• 2:48
Speaker 4: rallying public support, finally the GOP leadership has delivered on
• 2:53
Speaker 4: a core promise, and that was what the President was
• 2:56
Speaker 4: excited about, protecting American elections by ensuring that only US
• 3:01
Speaker 4: citizens are voting in federal elections. The Save Act, which
• 3:06
Speaker 4: requires proof of citizenship to register to vote, has become
• 3:10
Speaker 4: the cornerstone issue for Republicans and the top priorities. You
• 3:15
Speaker 4: heard the President mentioning there, and he is saying, get
• 3:18
Speaker 4: it done now. The momentum behind the bill is undeniable
• 3:22
Speaker 4: when it comes to American support. The problem is there
• 3:26
Speaker 4: are still some Republicans that are saying no. Now, recent
• 3:30
Speaker 4: pulling overwhelmingly supports this, strong majorities backing voter ID requirements
• 3:36
Speaker 4: as well as proof of citizenship measures. This isn't a
• 3:40
Speaker 4: fringe issue. It's literally a mainstream demand from people on
• 3:44
Speaker 4: all sides of the country. Republicans are framing this is
• 3:48
Speaker 4: common sense reform, and the American people are saying that's
• 3:51
Speaker 4: exactly what they see as well. Secure the vote, protect citizens,
• 3:56
Speaker 4: restore trust in our elections. Now, GOP leaders say the
• 4:00
Speaker 4: is about one simple thing, and this is what the
• 4:02
Speaker 4: President has said over and over again. This is about
• 4:06
Speaker 4: American elections should be decided by American citizens. President Donald
• 4:12
Speaker 4: Trump is applauding the move, calling it a massive step
• 4:16
Speaker 4: forward for election integrity, also praising Senate Republicans for fighting
• 4:20
Speaker 4: to protect the voice of every legal voter in the country.
• 4:23
Speaker 4: Trump has also made it clear this is just the
• 4:26
Speaker 4: beginning here, a swift passage in the Senate and signaling
• 4:31
Speaker 4: that election security will remain front and center heading into
• 4:34
Speaker 4: the next midterm election cycle. Republicans in Congress are also
• 4:38
Speaker 4: leaning into the momentum, arguing that this vote puts every
• 4:42
Speaker 4: lawmaker on record, forcing a clear choice on election day,
• 4:47
Speaker 4: stand for secure elections or opposed safeguards that the majority
• 4:51
Speaker 4: of Americans support. Now that also brings us to reality.
• 4:57
Speaker 4: Senator thun he is the majority leader in the Senate,
• 5:00
Speaker 4: set down with Fox News Channels Brett Baer and he
• 5:03
Speaker 4: asked him about the reality of the Save Act and
• 5:06
Speaker 4: what's going to happen. Here is what he had to
• 5:09
Speaker 4: say about getting to that sixty vote threshold for the
• 5:12
Speaker 4: Save Act to actually pass some votes.
• 5:15
Speaker 6: But you know the frustration here you have head counters
• 5:18
Speaker 6: that look at the votes, and if you bring this
• 5:21
Speaker 6: to the floor and knowing it can't clear sixty votes,
• 5:25
Speaker 6: you're not willing to kind of vote procedurally to change.
• 5:29
Speaker 2: The rules to pass it.
• 5:31
Speaker 6: Then is this, you know, legislating Are you kind of
• 5:34
Speaker 6: just messaging for the election?
• 5:36
Speaker 7: Well, it's legislating. I mean, actually, if you look at
• 5:39
Speaker 7: the substance of the policy, this is about safe and
• 5:42
Speaker 7: secure and elections in this country and making sure that
• 5:46
Speaker 7: you know, we have an election process that is actually
• 5:49
Speaker 7: the right people, not just the you know, the illegals
• 5:52
Speaker 7: who are in this.
• 5:53
Speaker 2: Country have an opportunity to vote.
• 5:54
Speaker 7: We want to make sure that if you're in this country,
• 5:56
Speaker 7: you have to be a citizen of this country actually
• 5:58
  Speaker 7: to exercise and.
• 5:59
  Speaker 2: Cast your vote.
• 6:00
Speaker 7: So I think that's a fairly simple position and one
• 6:03
Speaker 7: that Democrats audit we eventually get on board with, but
• 6:06
Speaker 7: if they don't, we will. I mean, it's obviously an
• 6:08
Speaker 7: issue that we will be able to use, I think
• 6:11
Speaker 7: in the fall elections. So it has politics around it,
• 6:14
Speaker 7: but this is a goal is to achieve a policy outcome,
• 6:17
Speaker 7: and that is to try and get a requirement in
• 6:22
Speaker 7: law that in federal elections that you would have to
• 6:24
Speaker 7: be a citizen in order to register a vote, and
• 6:26
Speaker 7: you'd have to show an ID in order to vote
• 6:29
  Speaker 7: in our election.
• 6:29
Speaker 6: And there's no way to split it up to do
• 6:32
  Speaker 6: pieces of that.
• 6:33
Speaker 2: Is there any way any piece of.
• 6:34
Speaker 6: This could get past to sixty votes?
• 6:36
Speaker 2: Well, we'll see. I mean we're looking at how to
• 6:38
  Speaker 2: do that.
• 6:39
Speaker 7: There are other pieces of the Save America Act in addition.
• 6:42
Speaker 2: To those two. Those are the two that passed the House.
• 6:45
Speaker 7: The President is also introduced the idea of mail in voting,
• 6:48
Speaker 7: and so we've got some reforms and modifications to that.
• 6:51
Speaker 7: There's also the issue of whether or not biological mails
• 6:54
Speaker 7: ought to be able to compete in girl sports. There
• 6:57
Speaker 7: is the transgender surgery issue. Those are all issues on
• 7:00
Speaker 7: which I think most Americans, at least if they're Americans
• 7:04
Speaker 7: who are applying common sense, vote for and support in
• 7:08
Speaker 7: very big numbers. The only folks who don't support it
• 7:10
Speaker 7: appears at least at the moment are Democrats in the Senate,
• 7:13
Speaker 7: but we'll see if that changes over the course of time.
• 7:15
Speaker 2: What I've said all along, bread is.
• 7:17
Speaker 7: That what we will do is we will guarantee a
• 7:19
Speaker 7: debate on this issue.
• 7:20
Speaker 2: Obviously, it's a big priority for the president.
• 7:22
Speaker 7: There are a lot of people across the country who
• 7:24
Speaker 7: want to see this voted on, and we will guarantee
• 7:27
Speaker 7: a vote at the end of that.
• 7:28
Speaker 4: Now, to be clear, Center Thune isn't telling you every
• 7:31
Speaker 4: option available to actually get a real vote on this
• 7:35
Speaker 4: or to get it passed. I should say without getting
• 7:37
Speaker 4: to sixty there are other options. Senator Cruz was explaining
• 7:43
Speaker 4: exactly what one of those options would be. The problem
• 7:46
Speaker 4: is finding fifty Republicans that are willing to go along
• 7:51
Speaker 4: with it, and what it would mean is working over
• 7:54
Speaker 4: time and having a night and day back and forth
• 7:58
Speaker 4: with the Democrats forcing it to become a reality. Now,
• 8:03
Speaker 4: this is something that's been done in the past, and
• 8:06
Speaker 4: this is Senatored Cruz explaining exactly how it could be done.
• 8:09
Speaker 8: Now, you've got to have fifty Republicans who will stand together,
• 8:13
Speaker 8: because the fifty Republicans have to number one anytime the
• 8:17
Speaker 8: Democrats want to. They can suggest the absence of a quorum,
• 8:21
Speaker 8: and we have to be able to produce fifty bodies.
• 8:23
Speaker 4: Oh, everybody's got to be there, Okay, So everybody's got.
• 8:26
  Speaker 1: To be there.
• 8:27
Speaker 8: Yeah, you've got to physically be able to do it.
• 8:29
Speaker 4: Could go for to be clear, that could go, as
• 8:31
Speaker 4: you were saying, for days, right, for days or weeks. Yes,
• 8:35
Speaker 4: And in other words, there's some senators in the Republican
• 8:37
Speaker 4: Party that just would rather go home. Yeah, would rather
• 8:40
Speaker 4: go home on Thursdays like they always do. They don't
• 8:42
Speaker 4: want to stay over the weekend. They don't want to
• 8:44
Speaker 4: fight for this for a week or two.
• 8:46
Speaker 8: And secondly, the Democrats can tee up amendments and try
• 8:50
Speaker 8: to force votes on amendments, and we've got to have
• 8:52
Speaker 8: fifty Republicans that reject their amendments, that stand together. And
• 8:56
Speaker 8: right now we have I don't know, forty seven, forty eight,
• 9:00
Speaker 8: but we don't have fifty. And so we're having in
• 9:02
Speaker 8: arguments with a handful who are saying no. And I
• 9:06
Speaker 8: hope it changes, but right now, right now, we don't
• 9:11
  Speaker 8: have fifty.
• 9:13
Speaker 4: Final question on this one, when will the American people know?
• 9:16
Speaker 4: What day will you guys make this decision on either
• 9:20
Speaker 4: trying to vote for that or just having a straight
• 9:23
Speaker 4: up vote that you know you're going to come up
• 9:24
  Speaker 4: short on.
• 9:25
Speaker 8: Yeah, if nothing changes, we will likely vote have the
• 9:28
Speaker 8: final vote on Thursday of this week, and we will
• 9:32
Speaker 8: end up probably with fifty to fifty one fifty two
• 9:35
Speaker 8: votes for the Save America Act, but we'll need sixty
• 9:37
Speaker 8: and so the vote will fail if nothing changes. That's
• 9:40
  Speaker 8: where we're headed.
• 9:41
Speaker 4: And then do you expect the present to weigh in
• 9:43
Speaker 4: heavy on the strategy here? Does he know these two options?
• 9:46
Speaker 4: And how much influence would I have if the President
• 9:48
Speaker 4: came out and said, you know, damn it, men and
• 9:50
Speaker 4: women stay in Washington, d c. And fight this thing
• 9:53
Speaker 4: out and let's see what happens.
• 9:54
Speaker 8: Yeah, the President has said that multiple times, and that
• 9:58
Speaker 8: has been a significant part of the argument. But we
• 10:00
Speaker 8: still at the end of the day, you can't wave
• 10:04
Speaker 8: a magic wand and produce the votes, and we're still
• 10:07
Speaker 8: frustratingly short of fifty.
• 10:10
Speaker 4: So the one big X factor here is also President Trump.
• 10:13
Speaker 4: What will he say over the next twenty four hours,
• 10:16
Speaker 4: how many phone calls will he be making to put
• 10:20
Speaker 4: real pressure on many of these Republicans And is there
• 10:24
Speaker 4: a chance that you could get the fifty Republicans needed
• 10:27
Speaker 4: for a filibuster. This is all playing out in real time.
• 10:31
Speaker 4: One thing is for sure, the President is focused on it,
• 10:35
Speaker 4: and also other thing, it's very clear to say he's
• 10:38
Speaker 4: not backing down, so we'll keep covering it. And the
• 10:42
Speaker 4: President said he's going to keep fighting for it no
• 10:45
Speaker 4: matter what, and that should make every Trump supporter excited
• 10:50
  Speaker 4: right now.
