- 0:00Speaker 1: Section fourteen of the Book of Enoch, translated by Robert
- 0:05Speaker 1: Henry Charles. This LibriVox recording is in the public domain,
- 0:09Speaker 1: Chapter ninety, verses one through five, third period from Alexander
- 0:15Speaker 1: the Great to the Greco Syrian domination, Chapter ninety. And
- 0:21Speaker 1: I saw till that in this manner thirty five shepherds
- 0:24Speaker 1: undertook the pasturing of the sheep, and they severally completed
- 0:28Speaker 1: their periods as did the first, and others received them
- 0:32Speaker 1: into their hands to pasture them for their period, each
- 0:36Speaker 1: shepherd in his own period. And after that I saw
- 0:40Speaker 1: in my vision all the birds of heaven coming, the eagles,
- 0:44Speaker 1: the vultures, the kites, the ravens. But the eagles led
- 0:47Speaker 1: all the birds, and they began to devour those sheep,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and to pick out their eyes, and to devour their flesh.
- 0:54Speaker 1: And the sheep cried out because their flesh was being
- 0:56Speaker 1: devoured by the birds. And as for me, I looked
- 1:00Speaker 1: and lamented in my sleep over that shepherd who pastured
- 1:03Speaker 1: the sheep. And I saw until those sheep were devoured
- 1:06Speaker 1: by the dogs and eagles and kites, and they left
- 1:09Speaker 1: neither flesh, nor skin, nor sinew remaining on them. Till
- 1:13Speaker 1: only their bones stood there, and their bones too fell
- 1:17Speaker 1: to the earth, and the sheep became few. And I
- 1:20Speaker 1: saw until that twenty three had undertaken the pasturing and
- 1:24Speaker 1: completed in their several periods fifty eight times chapter ninety,
- 1:29Speaker 1: verses six through twelve, fourth period, from the Grecosyrian domination
- 1:35Speaker 1: to the Maccabean revolt. But behold, lambs were borne by
- 1:39Speaker 1: those white sheep, and they began to open their eyes
- 1:42Speaker 1: and to see, and to cry to the sheep. Yea,
- 1:44Speaker 1: they cried to them, but they did not hearken to
- 1:46Speaker 1: what they said to them, but were exceedingly deaf, and
- 1:50Speaker 1: their eyes were very exceedingly blinded. And I saw in
- 1:54Speaker 1: the vision how the ravens flew upon those lambs and
- 1:57Speaker 1: took one of those lambs, and dashed the sheep in peace,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and devoured them. And I saw till horns grew upon
- 2:03Speaker 1: those lambs, and the ravens cast down their horns, And
- 2:07Speaker 1: I saw till there sprouted a great horn of one
- 2:10Speaker 1: of those sheep, and their eyes were opened, and it
- 2:13Speaker 1: looked at them, and their eyes opened, and it cried
- 2:16Speaker 1: to the sheep, and the rams saw it, and all
- 2:18Speaker 1: ran to it. And notwithstanding all this, those eagles and vultures,
- 2:23Speaker 1: and ravens and kites still kept tearing the sheep and
- 2:26Speaker 1: swooping down upon them and devouring them. Still the sheep
- 2:31Speaker 1: remained silent, but the rams lamented and cried out, and
- 2:35Speaker 1: those ravens fought and battled with it, and sought to
- 2:39Speaker 1: lay low its horn, but they had no power over it.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Chapter ninety, verses thirteen through nineteen, the last assault of
- 2:47Speaker 1: the Gentiles on the Jews, where verses thirteen through fifteen
- 2:52Speaker 1: and sixteen through eighteen are doublets. And I saw till
- 2:56Speaker 1: the shepherds and eagles, and those vultures and kites came,
- 3:00Speaker 1: and they cried to the ravens that they should break
- 3:02Speaker 1: the horn of that ram, And they battled and fought
- 3:05Speaker 1: with it, and it battled with them and cried that
- 3:08Speaker 1: its help might come. And I saw till a great
- 3:11Speaker 1: sword was given to the sheep, and the sheep proceeded
- 3:14Speaker 1: against all the beasts of the field to slay them,
- 3:17Speaker 1: And all the beasts and the birds of the heaven
- 3:19Speaker 1: fled before their face. And I saw till that man
- 3:23Speaker 1: who wrote down the names of the shepherds and carried
- 3:25Speaker 1: up into the presence of the Lord of the Sheep
- 3:28Speaker 1: came and helped it, and showed it everything he had
- 3:31Speaker 1: come down for the help of that ram. And I
- 3:34Speaker 1: saw till the Lord of the Sheep came unto them
- 3:37Speaker 1: in wrath, and all who saw him fled, and they
- 3:40Speaker 1: all fell into his shadow from before his face. Chapter ninety,
- 3:45Speaker 1: verses twenty through twenty seven, Judgment of the Fallen Angels,
- 3:49Speaker 1: the Shepherds and the Apostates. And I saw till a
- 3:53Speaker 1: throne was erected in the pleasant land, and the Lord
- 3:55Speaker 1: of the Sheep sat himself thereon, and the other took
- 3:59Speaker 1: the sealed books and opened those books before the Lord
- 4:02Speaker 1: of the Sheep. And the Lord called those men the
- 4:05Speaker 1: seven first white Ones, and commanded that they should bring
- 4:08Speaker 1: before him, beginning with the first star, which led the way,
- 4:12Speaker 1: all the stars, whose privy members were like those of horses.
- 4:16Speaker 1: And they brought them all before him. And he said
- 4:19Speaker 1: to that man who wrote before him, being one of
- 4:22Speaker 1: those seven white Ones, and said unto him, take those
- 4:25Speaker 1: seventy shepherds to whom I delivered the sheep, and who,
- 4:29Speaker 1: taking them on their own authorities, slew more than I
- 4:31Speaker 1: commanded them. And behold they were all bound, I saw,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and they all stood before him, and the judgment was
- 4:39Speaker 1: held first over the stars, and they were judged and
- 4:42Speaker 1: found guilty, and went to the place of condemnation. And
- 4:46Speaker 1: they were cast into an abyss full of fire and flaming,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and full of pillars of fire. And those seventy shepherds
- 4:53Speaker 1: were judged and found guilty, and they were cast into
- 4:56Speaker 1: that fiery abyss. And I saw at the that time
- 5:00Speaker 1: how alike abyss was opened in the midst of the earth,
- 5:04Speaker 1: full of fire. And they brought those blinded sheep, and
- 5:07Speaker 1: they were all judged and found guilty, and cast into
- 5:10Speaker 1: this fiery abyss, and they burned. Now this abyss was
- 5:15Speaker 1: to the right of that house, and I saw those
- 5:18Speaker 1: sheep burning, and their bones burning. Chapter ninety, verses twenty
- 5:22Speaker 1: eight through thirty eight. The New Jerusalem, the conversion of
- 5:26Speaker 1: the surviving Gentiles, the resurrection of the Righteous the Messiah.
- 5:31Speaker 1: And I stood up to sea till they folded up
- 5:33Speaker 1: that old house and carried off all the pillars, and
- 5:36Speaker 1: all the beams and ornaments of the house were at
- 5:39Speaker 1: the same time folded up with it. And they carried
- 5:42Speaker 1: it off and laid it in a place in the
- 5:44Speaker 1: south of the land, And I saw till the Lord
- 5:47Speaker 1: of the sheep brought a new house, greater and loftier
- 5:50Speaker 1: than that first, and set it up in the place
- 5:53Speaker 1: of the first, which had been folded up. All its
- 5:56Speaker 1: pillars were new, and its ornaments were new and larger
- 6:00Speaker 1: than those of the first, the old one which he
- 6:03Speaker 1: had taken away, and all the sheep were within it.
- 6:06Speaker 1: And I saw all the sheep which had been left,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and all the beasts on the earth, and all the
- 6:11Speaker 1: birds of the heaven falling down and doing homage to
- 6:15Speaker 1: those sheep, and making petition to and obeying them in everything.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And thereafter those three who were clothed in white and
- 6:23Speaker 1: had seized me by my hand, who had taken me
- 6:26Speaker 1: up before, and the hand of that ram also seizing
- 6:29Speaker 1: hold of me. They took me up and set me
- 6:32Speaker 1: down in the midst of those sheep before the judgment
- 6:34Speaker 1: took place. And those sheep were all white, and their
- 6:39Speaker 1: wool was abundant and clean, and all that had been
- 6:42Speaker 1: destroyed and dispersed, and all the beasts of the field
- 6:45Speaker 1: and all the birds of the heaven assembled in that house.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And the Lord of the Sheep rejoiced with great joy,
- 6:51Speaker 1: because they were all good and had returned to his house.
- 6:55Speaker 1: And I saw till they laid down that sword which
- 6:58Speaker 1: had been given to the sheep, and they brought it
- 7:00Speaker 1: back into the house, and it was sealed before the
- 7:03Speaker 1: presence of the lord. And all the sheep were invited
- 7:06Speaker 1: into that house. But it held them not, and the
- 7:09Speaker 1: eyes of them all were opened, and they saw the good,
- 7:13Speaker 1: and there was not one among them that did not see.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And I saw that that house was large and broad
- 7:19Speaker 1: and very full. And I saw that a white bull
- 7:22Speaker 1: was born with large horns, and all the beasts of
- 7:25Speaker 1: the field, and all the birds of the air feared
- 7:28Speaker 1: him and made petition to him all the time. And
- 7:32Speaker 1: I saw till all their generations were transformed, and they
- 7:35Speaker 1: all became white bulls, and the first among them became
- 7:38Speaker 1: a lamb, and that lamb became a great animal and
- 7:41Speaker 1: had great black horns on its head, and the Lord
- 7:45Speaker 1: of the Sheep rejoiced over it, and over all the
- 7:47Speaker 1: oxen and I slept in their midst, and I awoke
- 7:51Speaker 1: and saw everything. This is the vision which I saw
- 7:54Speaker 1: while I slept, And I awoke and blessed the Lord
- 7:57Speaker 1: of righteousness and gave him glory. Then I wept with
- 8:00Speaker 1: a great weeping, and my tears stayed not till I
- 8:03Speaker 1: could no longer endure it. When I saw they flowed
- 8:07Speaker 1: on account of what I had seen. For everything shall
- 8:10Speaker 1: come and be fulfilled, and all the deeds of men
- 8:13Speaker 1: in their order were shown to me. On that night
- 8:17Speaker 1: I remembered the first dream, and because of it I
- 8:19Speaker 1: wept and was troubled, because I had seen that vision
- 8:24Speaker 1: and of Chapter ninety read by C. J. Plogue
