- 0:00Welcome back to Spy Trader , your goto podcast for navigating the markets with a smile and a solid strategy .
- 0:07I'm your host , Market Maverick Mike , and it's 6 am on Sunday , July 27th , 2025 , Pacific .
- 0:15We're gearing up for what promises to be a really busy and potentially bumpy week in the markets , so let's dive right in .
- 0:22First up , a quick recap of the headlines that will be driving the narrative this week .
- 0:28The big one everyone's watching is the Federal Reserve's FOMC meeting on July 29th and 30th .
- 0:35The smart money is on the Fed holding interest rates steady at 4.25 percent to 4.5 percent for the fifth meeting in a row .
- 0:44No rate cuts are expected this time around , mostly because inflation , while not runaway , is still stubbornly above their 2 percent target .
- 0:54We saw the annual inflation rate hit 2.7 percent for the 12 months ending June 2025 , up from 2.4 percent in May .
- 1:03Core inflation , which strips out volatile food and energy prices , also rose to 2.9 percent .
- 1:10The PCE price index for June will be released next week , giving us even more clarity .
- 1:15On the economic front , GDP is looking decent , with the Atlanta Fed estimating 2.4 percent growth for Q2 .
- 1:24Unemployment is low at 4.2 percent , but we are seeing early whispers of a slowdown with layoffs creeping higher , even if the labor market is still broadly healthy .
- 1:34We'll get official July payroll data next week , so keep an eye on that .
- 1:39Beyond the Fed , there's a significant August 1st deadline for tariffs .
- 1:43The US has slapped on some major tariffs , especially since January , against countries like China , Canada , Mexico , and the EU , leading to some titfortat retaliatory measures .
- 1:56While the market seems to have largely absorbed the initial shock , any snags in new trade agreements could definitely stir things up .
- 2:04Now , for the corporate landscape , next week is massive for earnings .
- 2:09We're talking about some of the ' Magnificent Seven' heavyweights stepping into the spotlight .
- 2:14Microsoft , Meta Platforms , Apple , and Amazon are all reporting , and their numbers will give us a very highresolution picture of corporate momentum , especially in the tech sector .
- 2:26But it's not just tech ; we'll also hear from financial giants like Mastercard and Visa , consumer staples like Procter & Gamble and ColgatePalmolive , and even Starbucks in consumer discretionary .
- 2:39Healthcare is also well represented with UnitedHealth Group , AstraZeneca , Merck , AbbVie , and Bristol Myers Squibb .
- 2:47And for industrials , Boeing's report will be key .
- 2:51Looking at the broader picture , the US stock market , specifically the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite , has been incredibly resilient , hitting new record highs .
- 3:03There's a lot of optimism floating around , fueled by strong corporate earnings and the persistent hope for future Fed rate cuts , even if not this month .
- 3:13Goldman Sachs recently noted a very high degree of bullishness on US stocks , especially the Magnificent Seven , which makes the market a bit vulnerable to sudden shifts if even small catalysts emerge .
- 3:26Inflation remains a top concern , keeping the Fed on its toes .
- 3:31And the US dollar has been showing some weakness against other major currencies , which is interesting because international equities have actually outperformed US equities yeartodate .
- 3:43So , with all these moving parts , what should a savvy Spy Trader be thinking ?
- 3:48Given the mixed signals and the busy week ahead , a balanced approach with some tactical adjustments is definitely in order .
- 3:56First off , for your core portfolio , it's always smart to stay diversified .
- 4:02Keep your bedrock holdings in broad market equity ETFs like the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust , ticker SPY , the iShares CORE S&P 500 ETF , ticker IVV , or the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF , ticker VOO .
- 4:21These give you wide exposure to large US companies and smooth out some of that singlestock volatility , especially during a hectic earnings week .
- 4:30If you want even wider coverage , consider the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF , ticker VTI .
- 4:37For technology , which has been a huge market driver , especially AIrelated stocks , continue to watch it closely .
- 4:44If you're still bullish on tech , holding the Invesco QQQ Trust , ticker QQQ , which tracks the Nasdaq100 , is a solid play .
- 4:53But given the high valuations and that ' onesided ' bullish sentiment we talked about , consider a bit of a hedge .
- 5:00Maybe pair your QQQ holding with a small allocation to a defensive sector ETF like the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund , ticker XLV .
- 5:10If you're extremely bullish on the AI trend and have a higher risk tolerance , individual stocks like Microsoft , ticker MSFT , or even Nvidia , ticker NVDA , which is a major AI player , could be on your radar .
- 5:25Just be prepared for potential ups and downs .
- 5:29On the inflation and bond market front , since inflation is still above the Fed's target , look for stability in your fixed income .
- 5:36The iShares Core US Aggregate Bond ETF , ticker AGG , or the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF , ticker BND , are great core holdings .
- 5:47If the yield curve steepens further because of inflation worries , longerterm bonds like those in the iShares 20 Year Treasury Bond ETF , ticker TLT , might see more volatility .
- 5:59So focusing on shorter to intermediateterm bonds within AGG or BND might be a more prudent move for next week .
- 6:07With the US dollar weakening , it's a good time to consider international exposure .
- 6:13International equities have been performing well , so to geographically diversify and potentially benefit from that weaker dollar , check out the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF , ticker VXUS , which covers developed and emerging markets outside the US .
- 6:30Or , for just developed markets , the Vanguard FTSE Developed Markets ETF , ticker VEA , is an option .
- 6:38Finally , keep a keen eye on geopolitical and tariff developments , especially with that August 1st deadline .
- 6:46While you can't really invest directly in response to every headline , maintaining a welldiversified portfolio , like we discussed , helps cushion against sudden shocks .
- 6:57For those with a higher risk tolerance , closely watching the news on trade negotiations and how it impacts specific sectors like manufacturing or agriculture could inform some tactical adjustments , but remember , that's a higherrisk play .
- 7:13In a nutshell , next week's market will be heavily swayed by the Fed's decision , crucial economic data like inflation and jobs , and those big corporate earnings .
- 7:24While there's still a positive vibe thanks to strong company performance and hopes for future rate cuts , stay vigilant and be ready for some shortterm volatility .
- 7:34That's it for this edition of Spy Trader .
- 7:36Stay smart , stay safe , and happy trading !
