- 0:31So welcome to the show, Martina.
- 0:33Thank you so much.
- 0:34I'm so excited to meet you.
- 0:35Thank you.
- 0:37Thank you.
- 0:38So our first question, uh, you grew up in Tuscany, to us Canadians, and I'm sure many people around the world listening, that sounds magical.
- 0:47Talk to us about growing up in Tuscany and what was that was like and how did that sort of help shape you as a person going out into the world after that?
- 0:56Yeah, living in Tuscany, it's like living in a timeless place.
- 1:00It's like living in a painting.
- 1:02That's really true.
- 1:04We wake up and we are surrounded by beauty.
- 1:06So I'm very lucky.
- 1:08I'm glad that I lived in, I grew up in Tuscany.
- 1:11I actually grew up in the province of Siena, which is the southern part of Tuscany, which is the very famous, uh, Val d'Orcia area.
- 1:21Very famous for wine.
- 1:22Then I moved to Florence, uh, 15, 17 years ago already.
- 1:28So, I mean, still a very good city in Tuscany, and, I think this shaped me as a person who likes, a slow life.
- 1:37Uh, we, we love the very small things of life, like, uh, enjoying glass of wines and, um, we have a deep connection with nature, with good food, with the changing of the seasons.
- 1:51So we always wait for the, that specific fruit which comes in june and then we wait for the next June to get that same, you know, October we have chestnuts.
- 2:03So we love these things and, uh, the history, the people, I think this is, very important for my job.
- 2:11Yeah.
- 2:12Yeah.
- 2:13It sounds magical and it's, it sounds so different from way of life here in Canada, and it honestly sounds like, uh, yeah, like magical, like we said already.
- 2:27I was actually secretly hoping you be like, well, it was just a regular growing up, et but it, it does sound as dreamy as I thought.
- 2:36Yeah, we.
- 2:38I think smaller, it's the key word.
- 2:41'cause we have, uh, like, uh, small classes when we go to school, we have classes that are like 15, 20 maximum people.
- 2:51Um, you know, everybody, it's a small village.
- 2:54I grew up in a village, which is 6,000 inhabitants.
- 2:57It is like a family and, uh, we all know each other.
- 3:02Then, uh, you know, uh, in my, in my town for example, uh, there was a kind
- 3:07of siesta, like at 1: 30, everybody close.
- 3:12of siesta, like at 1: And they go home.
- 3:13of siesta, like at 1: They have lunch together.
- 3:14of siesta, like at 1: I grew up having lunch with my family, with my parents, and also with my grandparents and then everybody back to work, me doing my homework and then preparing to go to school the next day.
- 3:26of siesta, like at 1: We had very good air, like, uh, fresh air.
- 3:29of siesta, like at 1: Uh, the landscapes are magical.
- 3:33of siesta, like at 1: I live close to a mountain, which is in the southern part of Tuscany Amiata.
- 3:38of siesta, like at 1: So we have hot springs.
- 3:40of siesta, like at 1: That's.
- 3:41of siesta, like at 1: Oh, Interesting.
- 3:44of siesta, like at 1: So we have a group of friends since we are a child.
- 3:47of siesta, like at 1: We grew up like that.
- 3:48of siesta, like at 1: And then I moved to Florence.
- 3:49of siesta, like at 1: It felt like a countryside, small town person moving in a to New York.
- 3:57of siesta, like at 1: Wow.
- 3:58of siesta, like at 1: Big doors, big buildings.
- 4:01of siesta, like at 1: And now I know that it's not, not building not big was like, wow.
- 4:06of siesta, like at 1: Huge door Renaissance policies, big buildings.
- 4:10of siesta, like at 1: Um, there's a stadium, you know, and, uh, SÌ, it felt like moving into a big town.
- 4:17of siesta, like at 1: I moved for the university.
- 4:20of siesta, like at 1: Right, right.
- 4:21of siesta, like at 1: Yeah.
- 4:22of siesta, like at 1: Well that leads very well, I mean into the next question as well, because your education history is super interesting.
- 4:28of siesta, like at 1: So you graduated with languages, literature, and international studies, and later earned a degree in European and American languages and literature.
- 4:35of siesta, like at 1: So.
- 4:35of siesta, like at 1: Your research focused on gender studies and South American women's literature and eventually led to you teaching Spanish and English in Italian high schools.
- 4:45of siesta, like at 1: what was that experience of teaching like for you and how do you feel if it did that that helped lead you toward a career of being a tour guide and teaching tourists about your home country and your history of your country?
- 4:59of siesta, like at 1: Absolutely.
- 5:00of siesta, like at 1: I, I'm that kind of person who always wanted to be a tour guide.
- 5:04of siesta, like at 1: You know, sometimes tour guiding, it's a plan B for somebody.
- 5:07of siesta, like at 1: It was like my dream, um, because, uh, since I, like three years old, four years old, I'm talking, talking, talking a lot in person and um, I think this was written in my destiny somehow because I didn't know what I wanted to do precisely.
- 5:27of siesta, like at 1: But I always wanted to teach.
- 5:30of siesta, like at 1: I love to teach at school.
- 5:31of siesta, like at 1: My mom, she's a teacher.
- 5:33of siesta, like at 1: I for a long time I thought I would be a professor.
- 5:36of siesta, like at 1: I would teach, uh, but I didn't know what, like, um, I love, uh, literature, but I also love the foreign languages and I love art.
- 5:45of siesta, like at 1: So somehow everything was settled because, uh, now it's what I do, like I teach using art, And talking foreign languages.
- 5:58of siesta, like at 1: So it's perfect because I love to work with tourists.
- 6:02of siesta, like at 1: I meet everyday different, uh, different people, honestly.
- 6:06of siesta, like at 1: Um, before when there were less people in tour, Florence and tour guides were mainly working half of the year.
- 6:14of siesta, like at 1: So that's why I wanted to teach.
- 6:17of siesta, like at 1: I wanted to teach half a year, and then I wanted to be a tour guide for half a year.
- 6:23of siesta, like at 1: Um, I spent few years teaching and, um, the experience is, um, SÌ very challenging but also rewarding.
- 6:32of siesta, like at 1: So you can construct relation with students that last for longer than the relation that you build with a person which is visiting friends for one day and leaving.
- 6:44of siesta, like at 1: So it's very.
- 6:45of siesta, like at 1: right.
- 6:46of siesta, like at 1: you grew up, uh, you grew up together.
- 6:50of siesta, like at 1: This is more satisfying.
- 6:51of siesta, like at 1: But also, uh, talking with tourists that are, uh, obviously mother tongue.
- 6:58of siesta, like at 1: , I mean, you learn more because, I mean, uh, I mainly speak Spanish.
- 7:03of siesta, like at 1: So Spanish is my main language.
- 7:04of siesta, like at 1: Well, Italian.
- 7:05of siesta, like at 1: I'm Italian, but I've studied Spanish languages.
- 7:08of siesta, like at 1: Um, Mm-hmm.
- 7:09of siesta, like at 1: let's say teaching shaped my skills of changing, um, language or contents according to who's listening.
- 7:19of siesta, like at 1: Obviously, if you have teenagers or if you have childrens in your tour, if adults or people that are, maybe they have a degree in history of art, it's very different the way you explain the way you talk.
- 7:33of siesta, like at 1: So SÌ this, uh, train me to adjust according to the person maybe that I'm talking with.
- 7:40of siesta, like at 1: And, um, I've studied South American's, uh, languages, especially literature written by women.
- 7:48of siesta, like at 1: So this is because I always had this interest for different point, points of view.
- 7:53of siesta, like at 1: I love to have more points of view, you know, and I love the point of view of people that usually are not, uh, um, so much, uh, they don't speak loud.
- 8:03of siesta, like at 1: Okay.
- 8:03of siesta, like at 1: So minor, usually women Yeah.
- 8:07of siesta, like at 1: That's so interesting 'cause there's a word in literature.
- 8:11of siesta, like at 1: Yeah.
- 8:11of siesta, like at 1: Yeah.
- 8:12of siesta, like at 1: I love that.
- 8:13of siesta, like at 1: I think that it's really important, uh, as people that we take into account a lot of different points of view, and unfortunately some people don't, but it's really, I. Amazing to see you out there doing that.
- 8:26of siesta, like at 1: So talk to us about what you had to do to become a tour guide.
- 8:32of siesta, like at 1: Uh, was there any like education or training that you had to do before you became a tour guide?
- 8:36of siesta, like at 1: Yeah, in Italy, uh, becoming a licensed tour guide, uh, requires passing a rigorous exam.
- 8:43of siesta, like at 1: And, uh, Okay.
- 8:45of siesta, like at 1: you need, um, extensive studies, you know, art history, archeology, local heritage, also food culture.
- 8:53of siesta, like at 1: There's a lot to study.
- 8:55of siesta, like at 1: So Yeah.
- 8:56of siesta, like at 1: after the university, i, I, I've studied for one year for being prepared, for passing the exam.
- 9:04of siesta, like at 1: So when I took the exam, uh, it was a big, long exam.
- 9:08of siesta, like at 1: Uh, we, it's, it requires a big, big preparation.
- 9:12of siesta, like at 1: Um, and then I became a tour guide.
- 9:15of siesta, like at 1: I was already a tour leader.
- 9:18of siesta, like at 1: Okay.
- 9:18of siesta, like at 1: I also passed the exam for being tour leader before being tour guide because, uh, uh, it was easier because, uh, I did at university two different foreign languages.
- 9:27of siesta, like at 1: So I just had to do an upgrade of that, passing an exam, and I became , A tour leader.
- 9:32of siesta, like at 1: Tour guiding is much more difficult of course, because you need to explain and to know a lot.
- 9:37of siesta, like at 1: So luckily there's an exam.
- 9:41of siesta, like at 1: Because this is guaranteeing when you have the license that the guide knows what's talking about.
- 9:46of siesta, like at 1: And Italy, there's a lot to talk about.
- 9:48of siesta, like at 1: So luckily we have exams that are guaranteeing you, that you're licensed.
- 9:53of siesta, like at 1: SÌ the preparation was demanding, but it is also incredibly rewarding.
- 9:57of siesta, like at 1: I mean, it gave me a solid foundation to speak, , with both knowledge and patient as well.
- 10:04of siesta, like at 1: I think that's also great though for people who are coming to Italy and want to do tours with licensed tour guides.
- 10:10of siesta, like at 1: You know, you're getting the history, the good information, people that actually have a true interest and have made it their career, not someone I. Who has just decided a few weeks ago, this is what they'd like to do.
- 10:22of siesta, like at 1: So they'll give you a tour, but you've really put the hard work in and, and it really makes, uh, it's a high industry standard it sounds like.
- 10:29of siesta, like at 1: We are struggling against, um.
- 10:31of siesta, like at 1: illegal tour guides, of course.
- 10:32of siesta, like at 1: Uh, because in Italy you can imagine for a long time, the exam was not available.
- 10:37of siesta, like at 1: Now there will be a new exam soon.
- 10:39of siesta, like at 1: We still don't know.
- 10:39of siesta, like at 1: It's a state exam, so people are studying a lot and, uh, getting ready a lot.
- 10:44of siesta, like at 1: I mean, if you don't want to be a tour guide, uh, I mean it's, it's easy to not take the exam of course.
- 10:51of siesta, like at 1: So Sure.
- 10:52of siesta, like at 1: if you, I mean, you don't really want to be a tool guide.
- 10:57of siesta, like at 1: Um, that, that's why it's, it's important that you have patience because it's really difficult to get the license.
- 11:04of siesta, like at 1: So, uh, whoever has the license, it means that it passed through all these steps.
- 11:09of siesta, like at 1: So it's guaranteeing that you are, will find a person which is, uh, passionate and knowledgeable.
- 11:16of siesta, like at 1: Yeah.
- 11:18of siesta, like at 1: Yeah.
- 11:19of siesta, like at 1: That's amazing.
- 11:20of siesta, like at 1: So, , after you've passed the exam, uh, how long it take you to create your company?
- 11:26of siesta, like at 1: , SunFlorence Tours?
- 11:28of siesta, like at 1: How did that come about?
- 11:29of siesta, like at 1: And do you provide all of the tours?
- 11:31of siesta, like at 1: Do you have a team?
- 11:32of siesta, like at 1: How does that work?
- 11:33of siesta, like at 1: Yes.
- 11:33of siesta, like at 1: Let's say when I, uh, started at the beginning,, it was just me.
- 11:38of siesta, like at 1: Um, I decided to do private tours.
- 11:42of siesta, like at 1: Before, there were many more group tours before covid.
- 11:45of siesta, like at 1: There's still group tours, but I think after Covid people, they really understood the importance of slowing down a little bit and having more space and not being in a group of 50 people.
- 11:56of siesta, like at 1: So I was already working, organizing my private tours., I was working as a tour guide for other companies as well.
- 12:02of siesta, like at 1: And then step through Instagram especially, and also.
- 12:07of siesta, like at 1: Through my, my webpage and, uh, contacts.
- 12:10of siesta, like at 1: I developed my own, um, clients.
- 12:13of siesta, like at 1: I mean that they contact me.
- 12:15of siesta, like at 1: So I have my own clients and I have my, my own tours.
- 12:19of siesta, like at 1: I also have.
- 12:20of siesta, like at 1: More tours than the ones I can manage.
- 12:22of siesta, like at 1: So now I have guides and colleagues that are sometimes, uh, helping me.
- 12:28of siesta, like at 1: And, uh, last year I also, uh, took the qualification for being a technical director, which means that, uh, to open the agency.
- 12:37of siesta, like at 1: So now we are Oh wow.
- 12:39of siesta, like at 1: working on, on it.
- 12:41of siesta, like at 1: Congratulations.
- 12:42of siesta, like at 1: That's amazing.
- 12:43of siesta, like at 1: If things are, things are moving quickly.
- 12:46of siesta, like at 1: Thank you.
- 12:47of siesta, like at 1: See, so step by step and, uh, basically SunFlorence uh, is, is going through from an idea to share the real living Florence because with other agency I was mainly working in Duomo, Uffizi.
- 12:59of siesta, like at 1: You for sure know David, that very handsome guy, but wants to see, which is wonderful.
- 13:07of siesta, like at 1: But I really wanted to show the secret places, secret things.
- 13:11of siesta, like at 1: To show how we live and, uh, that's the idea.
- 13:14of siesta, like at 1: So yes, I organized tour in the museum, which I love, but I also organize, uh, customized tour.
- 13:22of siesta, like at 1: Yeah, I love that idea because yes, you could definitely want to see the things that everyone knows about, but I always feel like a tour or experience is much more special if it's sort of like an inside scoop or places that not everyone goes to.
- 13:35of siesta, like at 1: So I think that that makes it very special.
- 13:37of siesta, like at 1: So that's really great.
- 13:39of siesta, like at 1: Now, I discovered you and your tour company through your videos with Harold Balder.
- 13:43of siesta, like at 1: My husband and I have watched his videos for years now.
- 13:46of siesta, like at 1: So my burning question is how did you come to know Harold and what impact do you feel this has had on your tour business?
- 13:53of siesta, like at 1: I mean, I, I, uh, I'm happy to know you through that, so this is definitely part of that.
- 13:58of siesta, like at 1: But I'd love to know sort of how he found you or you found him, or how that came to be, and then what effects that has had.
- 14:05of siesta, like at 1: Well, uh, it change my, my life, my career absolutely.
- 14:11of siesta, like at 1: It's obviously one of the most important moment of my, my career.
- 14:16of siesta, like at 1: 'cause when he found me, I was working with, um, other tour agencies, tour companies, and uh, I, I had few private clients also.
- 14:28of siesta, like at 1: Some tips, some private clients coming from my page and he's the one, one of this person who came, uh, through the page.
- 14:35of siesta, like at 1: I think, uh, Okay.
- 14:36of siesta, like at 1: we met, um, in 2019 in Florence, and I had no idea of who.
- 14:45of siesta, like at 1: Another random clients.
- 14:47of siesta, like at 1: And that was not even my best day in my, in that summer because I was not even feeling so well.
- 14:54of siesta, like at 1: So he asked me if he could record the tour and I say, no, no, you cannot record the tour.
- 15:02of siesta, like at 1: First of all, I'm shy.
- 15:04of siesta, like at 1: I mean, um.
- 15:06of siesta, like at 1: I've never done something like that.
- 15:07of siesta, like at 1: So now step by step, I'm more comfortable.
- 15:11of siesta, like at 1: But at the beginning, I had the camera right here and I didn't know who was him, why he wanted to record the tour.
- 15:19of siesta, like at 1: And especially before Covid, it was not so normal to record the information because there was the idea of, if I tell the things, why would you buy a tour?
- 15:30of siesta, like at 1: So Mm-hmm.
- 15:31of siesta, like at 1: An, an old way of thinking.
- 15:32of siesta, like at 1: So I was one of the first person recording things and spreading knowledge around.
- 15:38of siesta, like at 1: So obviously it was something new.
- 15:40of siesta, like at 1: I said, no, you cannot record information, especially inside the town or within the special permission.
- 15:46of siesta, like at 1: And I said, no, but I want record information about, uh, what does it mean being a tour guide, okay.
- 15:52of siesta, like at 1: About me.
- 15:53of siesta, like at 1: So.
- 15:55of siesta, like at 1: And I actually haven't explained like I do in a tour.
- 15:59of siesta, like at 1: For me, it was weird because I was talking about me.
- 16:01of siesta, like at 1: I mean, I think about the town hall or city hall, and then he gave me this huge tip.
- 16:08of siesta, like at 1: And I thought, okay, maybe it's just for the video, or, I didn't want to be tipped because I knew, I knew that I could do, I had to do more.
- 16:18of siesta, like at 1: I mean, I had to explain the building.
- 16:20of siesta, like at 1: He did not let me explain the building, so I just wanted to go away and, um, I gave him, I, I wanted to give him back the money.
- 16:29of siesta, like at 1: And then he, uh, basically obliged me to accept he wanted to tip me.
- 16:33of siesta, like at 1: So I said, okay, I will accept this money if you let me do other tour.
- 16:37of siesta, like at 1: So then we did also the market tour, which is the very famous video where he's preparing the bunny with the tripe, Yes.
- 16:44of siesta, like at 1: him cooking and eating tripe.
- 16:47of siesta, like at 1: And then we kept in touch a lot, uh, especially after Covid because lots of people arrived and then pandemic.
- 16:54of siesta, like at 1: So then he came back and when he came back, uh, I was already working a lot with my private clients, thanks to him.
- 17:02of siesta, like at 1: And he brought lots of people to me.
- 17:04of siesta, like at 1: So it's really made me independent from my agency and I could develop more tour and people were trusting me more'cause they, uh, watched the video.
- 17:15of siesta, like at 1: And, uh, I have to say that the greatest client came from him.
- 17:19of siesta, like at 1: I always have like, uh, young people and solo travelers or couples, people that love to travel open-minded.
- 17:30of siesta, like at 1: Then we did Rome.
- 17:31of siesta, like at 1: He came back.
- 17:32of siesta, like at 1: When he came back, we were supposed to do, uh, Florence and Naples.
- 17:37of siesta, like at 1: He said Naples at the beginning.
- 17:39of siesta, like at 1: Then the day Harold is like, um, a very knowledgeable, curious person.
- 17:45of siesta, like at 1: He knows a lot, very interesting.
- 17:48of siesta, like at 1: And um, but he has millions of ideas.
- 17:53of siesta, like at 1: He was, and then we finished in Florence, um, full day, uh, was about to go home and said, okay, so we go to Roma Rome, study Naples.
- 18:03of siesta, like at 1: So I had to study like Naples and I tried to study the entire city of Rome in one night.
- 18:09of siesta, like at 1: And you cannot study the entire city of Rome in one night.
- 18:12of siesta, like at 1: Yes, I can.
- 18:13of siesta, like at 1: So, but then it was just, uh, touring with a friend.
- 18:18of siesta, like at 1: I mean, now is there, I I, I know Rome, I, I know its other cities, but I'm based in Florence of course.
- 18:26of siesta, like at 1: So when there's tours, I can obviously suggest my colleagues in Rome.
- 18:32of siesta, like at 1: Right.
- 18:33of siesta, like at 1: Trusted colleagues in Rome and um, obviously, , whenever I have another request that I send people to my dear colleagues there, or it's, it's usually I work in Florence mainly, or in, in Tuscany, in general, Right, right, right.
- 18:46of siesta, like at 1: I saw that video.
- 18:47of siesta, like at 1: You did very well, so especially, he's it was holding him for breaking all the Italian etiquette with food.
- 18:54of siesta, like at 1: Well, it is so funny that you say that because every time my husband and I have red wine, we stare at each other in the eyes as we're drinking it very intensely because we learned that from your video.
- 19:06of siesta, like at 1: And then every time I have, I think it's a cappuccino, later in the day, I am like, we shouldn't be doing Thank you so much.
- 19:13of siesta, like at 1: You're saving an Italian every time.
- 19:21of siesta, like at 1: And Harold did it on purpose, of course, because he's, he doesn't follow anyone's rules apparently.
- 19:26of siesta, like at 1: And then, but the staring in the eyes is we do it every Yeah.
- 19:30of siesta, like at 1: So we have definitely learned that from you.
- 19:33of siesta, like at 1: But I mean, your chemistry is also very good.
- 19:36of siesta, like at 1: So yes, it happened organically and I think it's amazing that you did not know who he Yeah.
- 19:41of siesta, like at 1: was just another client.
- 19:42of siesta, like at 1: I think that's a, a beautiful start to that story, but also.
- 19:46of siesta, like at 1: He's very playful and I think that that also brings that out in sort of you when you're with him as well.
- 19:52of siesta, like at 1: So I think that the chemistry of the pair of you together was really good, and I think that's why it works, honestly.
- 19:57of siesta, like at 1: And that's why is really authentic.
- 20:01of siesta, like at 1: I mean, everything that you see happened, so, Yeah.
- 20:05of siesta, like at 1: there's not, um, erasing the video or parts or changing it's.
- 20:11of siesta, like at 1: His life, what you, what you see.
- 20:13of siesta, like at 1: It's real.
- 20:13of siesta, like at 1: So that's why to me, I, I started following him on YouTube and I, every video he publish, it's really amazing.
- 20:21of siesta, like at 1: Mm-hmm.
- 20:22of siesta, like at 1: It is.
- 20:22of siesta, like at 1: Yeah, no, I agree.
- 20:24of siesta, like at 1: And you do have a wide variety of tour options as well.
- 20:27of siesta, like at 1: We've sort of alluded to that a little bit.
- 20:29of siesta, like at 1: So can you talk to us about how you developed your tour options?
- 20:33of siesta, like at 1: Because there are a lot of things that people can choose from, so I'd love to hear sort of how that process came to be.
- 20:38of siesta, like at 1: Yeah.
- 20:38of siesta, like at 1: I started with classic tours.
- 20:40of siesta, like at 1: 'cause of course, for my information, I did, uh, many, many, many tours.
- 20:46of siesta, like at 1: Um, I met for the first time, uh, Harold in the duomo tours, the dome tour.
- 20:51of siesta, like at 1: I was climbing the dome three times per day for years.
- 20:55of siesta, like at 1: Then the academia david, with every day at least two, three times per day.
- 21:00of siesta, like at 1: But then with my private clients, as I told you, I was, uh, trying to, um, convince people to do kind of More particular experience to go out from the crowd, especially to find that little bar, little spot, little window where nobody goes.
- 21:18of siesta, like at 1: And um, I noticed that people actually are looking for more flexible, customized experiences.
- 21:24of siesta, like at 1: So then I shift to work around specific different interests that basically are my interests also.
- 21:32of siesta, like at 1: As you mentioned, I studied the woman literature, so books written by women, and the first tour I created was, um, great Woman of Florence Tour because, and you always mention names.
- 21:45of siesta, like at 1: We have so many names to mention, Lorenzo de' Medici, Leonardo, Botticelli, Michelangelo, but behind them, they were great women.
- 21:52of siesta, like at 1: The Medici families full of great women who made the history.
- 21:56of siesta, like at 1: Important and they created Florence as we have Florence now.
- 21:59of siesta, like at 1: So we have to mention these women.
- 22:01of siesta, like at 1: And uh, I noticed there were lots of women, but also lots of people that were interested in, um, hearing more about the story.
- 22:08of siesta, like at 1: So it's walking tour and we talk about the places dedicated to important women or art artists.
- 22:16of siesta, like at 1: Um, also we had, uh, incredible names, scientists, you know.
- 22:24of siesta, like at 1: Many names.
- 22:25of siesta, like at 1: Then also artisans.
- 22:26of siesta, like at 1: The artisans.
- 22:28of siesta, like at 1: , This was born as an interest of, um, showing to people what the real artisans do.
- 22:36of siesta, like at 1: So it's my community, it's my district, my my city.
- 22:40of siesta, like at 1: I love to, uh, show the real person.
- 22:43of siesta, like at 1: Not the scammers, but the person who really do that in their life for living.
- 22:48of siesta, like at 1: So how much they struggle to select the good quality, how much to guarantee good quality.
- 22:54of siesta, like at 1: How, how much they have with how much they have to know to, to learn, to be able to make a belt, you know?
- 23:03of siesta, like at 1: And so I wanna show this, which is less.
- 23:08of siesta, like at 1: Fancy, maybe because you don't go in a shop, but it's real.
- 23:12of siesta, like at 1: So that's how I developed, for example, this tour.
- 23:15of siesta, like at 1: It's a little different, but we go to talk to people that are friends that I trust and, uh, now friends took time and, uh, now trust.
- 23:24of siesta, like at 1: So they are happy to tell us what they, what they do, or the managed tour, maybe secrets everybody wants to hear about gossip, so I have a tour about the secret stories.
- 23:35of siesta, like at 1: Of course wine.
- 23:38of siesta, like at 1: I love to drink wine.
- 23:40of siesta, like at 1: I'm a wine guide and logic guide.
- 23:41of siesta, like at 1: I to connect some also for that.
- 23:43of siesta, like at 1: So being able to drink wine properly.
- 23:45of siesta, like at 1: And so I love to explain how to, not to ruin the flavor of wine, mixing it with the wrong food or see that's, um, every, everything comes to like, um, oh, we should do that.
- 23:57of siesta, like at 1: So.
- 23:59of siesta, like at 1: And if you're, but if you are interested in it, you are also going to be that much more passionate about it while you're talking to people.
- 24:06of siesta, like at 1: So it only makes sense that these are also your interests because if someone is telling me something and I can tell they don't really care about it, it takes away from that experience.
- 24:15of siesta, like at 1: So that's, so that makes sense.
- 24:18of siesta, like at 1: we make, we get angry.
- 24:20of siesta, like at 1: I mean.
- 24:23of siesta, like at 1: You know, it's fantastic.
- 24:25of siesta, like at 1: So, because if you don't believe that, it's fantastic.
- 24:28of siesta, like at 1: It's not fantastic.
- 24:30of siesta, like at 1: That's, Right.
- 24:31of siesta, like at 1: Right.
- 24:32of siesta, like at 1: the idea.
- 24:33of siesta, like at 1: Your, I mean, when I work also in the classic tour, Uffizi Gallery or David, I'm a love with David and I explain, David is like.
- 24:41of siesta, like at 1: I feel glad to be able to stay next to him and see him every day and explain him and talk about him.
- 24:49of siesta, like at 1: During, during covid.
- 24:50of siesta, like at 1: This happened a lot.
- 24:51of siesta, like at 1: Uh, when I was, uh, at home, uh, I really noticed how much I missed being surrounded by beauty because Hmm.
- 24:59of siesta, like at 1: I mean, I always work surrounded by beauty.
- 25:01of siesta, like at 1: That's a privilege.
- 25:02of siesta, like at 1: Even if I'm outside, there's the Duomo next to me or everything is so beautiful and that's a privilege.
- 25:08of siesta, like at 1: And, uh, if you don't believe it.
- 25:10of siesta, like at 1: It's useless that you tell to people what you, what you see, what you feel.
- 25:16of siesta, like at 1: Yeah, definitely.
- 25:17of siesta, like at 1: So I'm wondering which of your tours are the most popular?
- 25:23of siesta, like at 1: Like which ones do people book the most?
- 25:25of siesta, like at 1: Well, the Medici tour, it's one of, uh, the most booked tour 'cause, uh, Medici are, you know, fascinating.
- 25:34of siesta, like at 1: This.
- 25:36of siesta, like at 1: Murder, homicides, money, and, uh, intrigues.
- 25:40of siesta, like at 1: So people are fascinated by the Medici family and also the classic tours, like, Uffizi and the academia are must, so Mm-hmm.
- 25:50of siesta, like at 1: everybody starts with an Uffizi tour or with an academia tour, especially if it's a first timer and then maybe they add an extra food tour or a wine tour or something else.
- 26:02of siesta, like at 1: Food tour also are really popular now.
- 26:05of siesta, like at 1: People, they love to drink.
- 26:07of siesta, like at 1: They love to eat, and.
- 26:10of siesta, like at 1: Yes.
- 26:12of siesta, like at 1: Is there a tour that you are a big fan of, that people should be booking more, but they're not?
- 26:18of siesta, like at 1: Do you think there's a tour people are missing out on?
- 26:21of siesta, like at 1: Yes, there's many.
- 26:24of siesta, like at 1: There's two museums in Florence, well, many more than two, but let's say two museums in Florence that people usually, they don't book so much, but are super interesting.
- 26:34of siesta, like at 1: For example, the Bargello Museum, which is an incredible place.
- 26:40of siesta, like at 1: It's the place where we had executions in medieval times.
- 26:43of siesta, like at 1: And so it's also the place where they were spending the last night before the execution.
- 26:47of siesta, like at 1: And it's full of Masterpiece by Donatello, Michelangelo, Verrocchio,.
- 26:52of siesta, like at 1: There's collections of, uh, ivory ceramic.
- 26:55of siesta, like at 1: weapons, it's so interesting and it's, um, one of the oldest building we have in Florence.
- 27:00of siesta, like at 1: We also, uh, churches like Santa Croce Church, they should book more at the church.
- 27:06of siesta, like at 1: It's incredible.
- 27:07of siesta, like at 1: It's the place where we have the tombs of The Italian glories, there's the tomb of Michelangelo.
- 27:13of siesta, like at 1: It's amazing.
- 27:15of siesta, like at 1: And um, maybe something about Dante.
- 27:18of siesta, like at 1: Dante's popular, but a walking tour about the places of Dante, the writer of the Divine Comedy should be booked more 'cause it's full of, but also full of history of course.
- 27:32of siesta, like at 1: Excellent.
- 27:33of siesta, like at 1: Well, I think that's important for people to, to understand what else is out there because I'm sure that there are some that people are always booking, but missing other good ones.
- 27:43of siesta, like at 1: And, already alluded to this, but just to reiterate, is there a particular tour you feel is best for first timers to your city?
- 27:52of siesta, like at 1: Yes, for the first timers, for sure.
- 27:55of siesta, like at 1: I always recommend, uh, my Love at First Sight tour, which is a walking tour.
- 28:01of siesta, like at 1: Kind of fast, one hour and 45 minutes, two hours, something like that.
- 28:05of siesta, like at 1: So not heavy at all.
- 28:06of siesta, like at 1: Little walking of the center where we explain the main, uh, sites of the center.
- 28:12of siesta, like at 1: But it's uh, like a great introduction to understand the city properly.
- 28:17of siesta, like at 1: We talk about the history of Florence, the main characters of Florence.
- 28:20of siesta, like at 1: The main place is in Florence and, uh, some curiosities.
- 28:24of siesta, like at 1: And obviously during the tour I also show them where to eat, what to eat.
- 28:29of siesta, like at 1: This is a terrific place.
- 28:30of siesta, like at 1: This is a local place and so some suggestions and especially we talk about what to do in the next days.
- 28:36of siesta, like at 1: So this is a great museum.
- 28:37of siesta, like at 1: These other things, this is, so the first thing you should do is this tour in this way.
- 28:42of siesta, like at 1: If you have more days, then you will have an idea of what to do in the next days without wasting time.
- 28:47of siesta, like at 1: Hmm.
- 28:48of siesta, like at 1: That's such a good idea to book this on your first And that's such a lot on the way usually.
- 28:53of siesta, like at 1: So.
- 28:56of siesta, like at 1: It's gelato is always a good idea.
- 28:58of siesta, like at 1: yeah.
- 28:59of siesta, like at 1: now to finish off the tours aspect of our chat, do you have, what's your favorite tour that you do?
- 29:08of siesta, like at 1: Well, I love, uh, ah, this is a hard question.
- 29:13of siesta, like at 1: I knew you were about to ask me this question because, uh, all the clients ask me this question, but I don't know.
- 29:19of siesta, like at 1: It's like saying, what's your favorite child?
- 29:22of siesta, like at 1: I think.
- 29:24of siesta, like at 1: Because, um, I love classic tours, but I also love the tours I created so much.
- 29:31of siesta, like at 1: Um, it's like, what's your favorite wine?
- 29:34of siesta, like at 1: That's not a favorite wine.
- 29:36of siesta, like at 1: It's the wine.
- 29:37of siesta, like at 1: It's good with what you eat with.
- 29:39of siesta, like at 1: So it depends on people in the group.
- 29:42of siesta, like at 1: Obviously I love treasure hunts with kids so much fun.
- 29:47of siesta, like at 1: I love to, when I have couples, I love to do the boat tour on the Arno River, so it's romantic.
- 29:55of siesta, like at 1: They enjoy the sunset and it's really relaxing.
- 30:00of siesta, like at 1: Uh, when I have people that are interested in history, I love to do Uffizi gallery.
- 30:06of siesta, like at 1: I love to spend like three hours in Uffizi Gallery with people listening to me.
- 30:10of siesta, like at 1: If they're not interested.
- 30:11of siesta, like at 1: Of course, I prefer to drink wine with them or to to other tours.
- 30:16of siesta, like at 1: So it's difficult.
- 30:17of siesta, like at 1: I don't think I have, um, a favorite tour.
- 30:21of siesta, like at 1: I have.
- 30:21of siesta, like at 1: I see that Yeah.
- 30:23of siesta, like at 1: it's hard to Complicated.
- 30:25of siesta, like at 1: Yeah.
- 30:26of siesta, like at 1: So what do you want people to know about Florence and why should people choose to visit Florence when they're planning their trip to Italy?
- 30:35of siesta, like at 1: Florence is, um, an amazing city for sure.
- 30:40of siesta, like at 1: It's, um, still authentic.
- 30:42of siesta, like at 1: It's a city that is, um, obviously easy to love because as soon as you arrive, it feels like living in a painting.
- 30:50of siesta, like at 1: It's being surrounded by painting.
- 30:52of siesta, like at 1: I just finished a tour with a client that was like, uh, I don't believe this is real.
- 30:56of siesta, like at 1: He was saying when looking at the Duomo, like, um, a painting for, for sure.
- 31:04of siesta, like at 1: So in some, some way it's easy.
- 31:07of siesta, like at 1: To enjoy and to understand.
- 31:08of siesta, like at 1: But it's also difficult and it requires attention.
- 31:11of siesta, like at 1: You have to pay attention.
- 31:12of siesta, like at 1: You have to respect the city so much to understand the city.
- 31:16of siesta, like at 1: So now we are struggling with overt tourism and fast tourism Mm-hmm.
- 31:20of siesta, like at 1: So people, they should, um, in order to understand Florence and to enjoy Florence, they should stay a little bit more like at least three days, two nights minimum, because only in this way you will understand that there's a community of people that still defending the city of Florence and still loving the slow things in the city of Florence.
- 31:42of siesta, like at 1: So you will find only if you stay more and if you love the city, you will see people waking up, reading the newspaper, getting a cappuccino, and then going to work, and that's authentic and not in all the other.
- 31:55of siesta, like at 1: Watching some other cities, of course, of Italy, you, you can still find this, but uh, in Florence there is a community of artisans.
- 32:04of siesta, like at 1: There's a community of inhabitants And we should defend them because they're struggling a lot now with the prices that are higher apartments that are not findable.
- 32:14of siesta, like at 1: So I mean, it's real.
- 32:16of siesta, like at 1: Florence is real.
- 32:17of siesta, like at 1: That's why people, they should visit Florence Amazing.
- 32:20of siesta, like at 1: I that sold.
- 32:22of siesta, like at 1: I'll be there.
- 32:23of siesta, like at 1: I'll be there next.
- 32:24of siesta, like at 1: I'll be there next April, so I'll see you then.
- 32:26of siesta, like at 1: So.
- 32:26of siesta, like at 1: Yeah.
- 32:27of siesta, like at 1: before I.
- 32:34of siesta, like at 1: So you were in Thailand yourself fairly recently.
- 32:38of siesta, like at 1: So talk to us about that adventure.
- 32:40of siesta, like at 1: What was the favorite part of your trip and had you been there before?
- 32:42of siesta, like at 1: So was this repeat visit or your first time there?
- 32:45of siesta, like at 1: First time in Asia.
- 32:47of siesta, like at 1: Okay.
- 32:48of siesta, like at 1: Yeah, because, um, tour guides have holidays when people work, so February.
- 32:54of siesta, like at 1: Right.
- 32:55of siesta, like at 1: Uh, I went with colleagues of mine 'cause only other colleagues they had on holiday in February.
- 33:00of siesta, like at 1: So we decided to go in a warm place like, um, uh, here it was winter, very cold.
- 33:06of siesta, like at 1: So we wanted to go somewhere where we could swim and relax a little bit, but also learn about history and um, Mm-hmm.
- 33:15of siesta, like at 1: a place full of, uh, one in history and, uh, with a great cultural heritage.
- 33:21of siesta, like at 1: So, um.
- 33:22of siesta, like at 1: Mm-hmm.
- 33:22of siesta, like at 1: decided to go to Thailand.
- 33:24of siesta, like at 1: I've never been there, so first time amazing.
- 33:28of siesta, like at 1: I loved so much Asia.
- 33:31of siesta, like at 1: I loved the Thailand.
- 33:32of siesta, like at 1: We were shocked about the size of buildings and the number of people in there and how much the food is good, how much Mm-hmm.
- 33:44of siesta, like at 1: nice, and I was fascinated by Chiang Mai, especially in the north.
- 33:50of siesta, like at 1: She's full of temples in incred, incredible temples and animals that I've never seen in my life.
- 33:57of siesta, like at 1: Beautiful.
- 33:58of siesta, like at 1: Mm-hmm.
- 33:59of siesta, like at 1: Excellent.
- 34:00of siesta, like at 1: Yeah, I, I followed along with your pictures and it looked, it really incredible and you could tell you were doing the trip from a tour guides perspective in terms of Yeah.
- 34:10of siesta, like at 1: what you were sharing with your audience was very relevant to really understand what Thailand is about.
- 34:17of siesta, like at 1: And I, I think that that, and so whether you meant to or not, or you're just being yourself, you could really tell that you were showing the parts that you felt were, were truly impacting you and that would impact others.
- 34:28of siesta, like at 1: So thank you so much for Thank you.
- 34:30of siesta, like at 1: the pictures and, For your feedback.
- 34:32of siesta, like at 1: Thank you.
- 34:33of siesta, like at 1: I was yeah.
- 34:34of siesta, like at 1: of the other two guides there because tour guides, tour guide.
- 34:38of siesta, like at 1: Traveling are the worst nightmare of other tour guides can be bad.
- 34:44of siesta, like at 1: I mean, we had a very good experience with a guide there that I recommended.
- 34:48of siesta, like at 1: So much because she changed our, uh, our entire journey there.
- 34:54of siesta, like at 1: I mean, um, I, since I'm a tour guide, I book tour guides.
- 35:00of siesta, like at 1: Mm-hmm.
- 35:01of siesta, like at 1: understand if there's a tour guide telling me what's that place.
- 35:06of siesta, like at 1: Mm-hmm.
- 35:07of siesta, like at 1: But like, like that, it's really changed my perspective, I think.
- 35:12of siesta, like at 1: Yeah.
- 35:12of siesta, like at 1: I, I booked a tour for two hours, three hours, one hour.
- 35:15of siesta, like at 1: When I travel there, we booked a guide for three days and Wow.
- 35:21of siesta, like at 1: Without her not being the same.
- 35:23of siesta, like at 1: So I really said I understood how my job, it's uh, it's important.
- 35:27of siesta, like at 1: People, they tell me with you, it's different.
- 35:29of siesta, like at 1: With you, it's different than now.
- 35:31of siesta, like at 1: I'm used to here with you.
- 35:32of siesta, like at 1: It's different.
- 35:33of siesta, like at 1: Yes.
- 35:33of siesta, like at 1: But now that I experiment, I experiment this by myself.
- 35:37of siesta, like at 1: Mm-hmm.
- 35:37of siesta, like at 1: really believe it.
- 35:38of siesta, like at 1: I mean, it's, um, it gave me also lots of, um, I mean some, I, I had some feedbacks looking at that guide because, uh, I, I felt housed like being guided.
- 35:52of siesta, like at 1: So Right.
- 35:53of siesta, like at 1: I understood I should do that or I should not do this anymore.
- 35:56of siesta, like at 1: So I.
- 35:57of siesta, like at 1: Mm-hmm.
- 35:58of siesta, like at 1: It was a good thing to take a guide for three days.
- 36:01of siesta, like at 1: Yeah, I, I could see that for sure.
- 36:03of siesta, like at 1: Now, is this the first, or when you usually travel, do you usually take tours so that you can pick up tips and tricks, or was this the first time, I know you mentioned it's the first time, you've probably done it for a longer period of time, but is taking tours something you typically do when you travel as well?
- 36:18of siesta, like at 1: Anyway.
- 36:20of siesta, like at 1: Yes.
- 36:20of siesta, like at 1: Um, before, no, before I was like, oh, I can study by myself.
- 36:25of siesta, like at 1: Uh, um, and then, yeah, I can study, can read, I'm a tour guide and all that.
- 36:30of siesta, like at 1: So before being tour guide especially, and um, yes, I was doing it by myself.
- 36:38of siesta, like at 1: Then I became a tour guide.
- 36:39of siesta, like at 1: Why I have no time to maybe study.
- 36:43of siesta, like at 1: So I, I'm on holiday, just want to relax.
