- 0:02Speaker 1: This is college football with Stugatz and the Bear.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Now it's go time.
- 0:07Speaker 1: T-Bob is with us. Wake up, barstool.
- 0:09Speaker 3: And then at the time of greatest triumph, I want
- 0:12Speaker 3: to suck from the cup of their tears.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I want to watch their women.
- 0:16Speaker 3: And children writhing on the ground. Everything that is precious
- 0:20Speaker 3: to Ole Miss, everything they pray for when they lay
- 0:22Speaker 3: their head down at night and they talk to their creator,
- 0:25Speaker 3: you want to take all of that and you want
- 0:27Speaker 3: to melt it in front of their faces and pour
- 0:29Speaker 3: it back down their throat.
- 0:31Speaker 2: And execute them.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I mean, who cares?
- 0:33Speaker 2: What, are you kidding me?
- 0:35Speaker 3: If I heard somebody utter those words, I would throw
- 0:38Speaker 3: them out the second story of the football life.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I love you boys.
- 0:42Speaker 1: It is college football with Stugatz and Baer. And look
- 0:45Speaker 1: who's here again. It is T-Bob from Wake Up Barstool.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Check him out every morning, FS1, 8 to 10 a.m. Eastern.
- 0:54Speaker 1: And wherever you get your podcasts. We have a big
- 0:56Speaker 1: weekend of college football coming up. But we just got
- 0:58Speaker 1: through a big weekend. of college football. And with that said, T-Bob,
- 1:02Speaker 1: take it away, my friend.
- 1:04Speaker 3: That's right. Special guest. Glad to be back, guys. Love
- 1:08Speaker 3: coming to hang out with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 1:11Speaker 3: It's interesting. Big weekend coming up, I would agree. I
- 1:14Speaker 3: don't know that I feel we're coming off of the
- 1:16Speaker 3: biggest weekend, but there are things to get into nonetheless.
- 1:21Speaker 3: And we're going to start by handing out Some Leisman
- 1:24Speaker 3: trophy awards. We all know about the Heisman, who's the
- 1:27Speaker 3: best in the entire country. But who do we crown?
- 1:30Speaker 3: Who lied to us? We'll go team, coach, player. And Bear,
- 1:34Speaker 3: I don't know about you, but yes, Stu, we're talking Leisman.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Where's your head at?
- 1:39Speaker 1: I like the idea of doing this on a weekly basis.
- 1:42Speaker 1: We'll see who racks up the most Leisman weekly trophies.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And we will assign winners. We'll have an award show.
- 1:49Speaker 1: at the end of this season and hand out the
- 1:52Speaker 1: Leisman Trophy to team, coach, and players. For me this week,
- 1:55Speaker 1: it was an obvious one after a big win over Mississippi,
- 1:59Speaker 1: a game I wish I hadn't taken. It has to
- 2:02Speaker 1: be Florida losing to Missouri. They are this week's team
- 2:06Speaker 1: winner of the Leisman Trophy. Congratulations to Summerall and the
- 2:10Speaker 1: Florida Gators.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:12Speaker 4: I wonder if Jaden Bond needs to– take a trip
- 2:15Speaker 4: with T-Bob to the Magic Lounge. I think that might
- 2:17Speaker 4: have been the reason why they lost, right?
- 2:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look, and who knows? It looks like
- 2:21Speaker 3: we have volleyball on Wednesday. Magic Lounge trip is now imperiled.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I don't want to talk about it. Oh, I'm down
- 2:28Speaker 3: about as bad as our team Leisman winner, the Florida Gators.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Look at Mizzou. Mizzou dominated, man. Yes.
- 2:35Speaker 3: And we'll get into the game more in a little bit,
- 2:37Speaker 3: but they exposed a critical Achilles heel weakness last Of
- 2:42Speaker 3: this Florida Gators team that I didn't think would be
- 2:44Speaker 3: so easy to expose.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Bear. Yeah, no, they didn't. What's going on with it?
- 2:51Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:51Speaker 4: A lot of people out there are familiar with the
- 2:53Speaker 4: bet online website out there, which is an offshore sports
- 2:57Speaker 4: book that people may frequent from time to time.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Allegedly.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Or allegedly, maybe kind of, sort of. Four straight weeks now,
- 3:05Speaker 4: the team with the highest bet number has lost outright.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Oklahoma over Michigan. LSU Ole Miss, Ole Miss, Florida, and
- 3:17Speaker 4: now Florida, Missouri. So I can't wait to see what
- 3:20Speaker 4: my man Dave Mason sends out there this week to
- 3:23Speaker 4: see who the– who the ax is going to fall
- 3:26Speaker 4: on this week in terms of that. But we talked
- 3:30Speaker 4: about Missouri and their ability to throw, and we knew
- 3:32Speaker 4: that Eli Drinkwitz, they were all talking about us and
- 3:34Speaker 4: idiots like me saying, how are they still ranked and
- 3:37Speaker 4: having recorded a rank win.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Good for them.
- 3:39Speaker 4: And now they get A & M at home this week,
- 3:41Speaker 4: and we'll see if they can avoid this SEC love
- 3:44Speaker 4: triangle circle of losing after every week.
- 3:47Speaker 1: See, Bob, I've got to tell you, anyone who compared
- 3:49Speaker 1: this Florida Gator team to the 2019 LSU team– I mean, seriously,
- 3:54Speaker 1: they should not.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Maybe I'm talking.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Maybe there's one specific person I'm talking to and his biceps,
- 4:00Speaker 1: but Josh Pate, do me a favor. You should be
- 4:02Speaker 1: embarrassed today for comparing the Florida Gators to the 2019
- 4:07Speaker 1: LSU team. That's one of the greatest teams any of
- 4:09Speaker 1: us have ever seen. How about that?
- 4:11Speaker 3: So, Pate, I love Pate. He does an interesting thing, though,
- 4:15Speaker 3: where he says... some are saying, so he didn't say it,
- 4:20Speaker 3: but some, some are saying, that's a heady play. And
- 4:24Speaker 3: I'd like to think that he learned that from me.
- 4:26Speaker 1: That's a very heady play by Josh Pate.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yes. That's broadcasting one-on-one.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Not me, not me, but some would say, Stu, I
- 4:35Speaker 3: would ask you this. So bear, that's crazy stat that
- 4:37Speaker 3: he met you at bed online. I mean, does that
- 4:40Speaker 3: not make us question the efficacy of like general democracy
- 4:44Speaker 3: as a whole? If we as a voting public are
- 4:47Speaker 3: so incredibly dumb that whenever all of us believe the
- 4:51Speaker 3: same thing.
- 4:52Speaker 2: We are consistently wrong.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Like, yeah, I think democracy's dead. It's a flawed system.
- 4:59Speaker 3: We should get rid of it. We don't know anything,
- 5:01Speaker 3: especially when we all gang up together.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Never believe anything you're told, especially when it's about San
- 5:06Speaker 4: Diego State and the entire team. It was like my
- 5:09Speaker 4: cousin Vinny. The whole town's got the flu when everything
- 5:12Speaker 4: was closed. San Diego State, everybody's got the mumps.
- 5:14Speaker 2: What happens? They went out right.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Yes, I'm not trying to be political on this show.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'm never trying to be political, but it seems like
- 5:20Speaker 1: someone is trying to do away with democracy.
- 5:22Speaker 3: We don't need to ask, D-Bob. It seems like it's happening.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I'm just saying, the masses are dumb, dude.
- 5:29Speaker 2: God save the king. Everybody that made those.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Bets gets to vote. Think about that. All right. Leisman Trophy,
- 5:36Speaker 3: Coach of the Week.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 5:37Speaker 3: I'm going James Franklin boys. Wow. Virginia tech getting the
- 5:40Speaker 3: whole James Franklin experience. And I feel bad because it
- 5:44Speaker 3: is a brutal, right? It took a kick that was missed.
- 5:47Speaker 3: And then you're like, wait, maybe it was made. And
- 5:49Speaker 3: then we found the thousandth angle. We're like, no, I
- 5:51Speaker 3: think it's actually missed. So he did his job. They're
- 5:54Speaker 3: in a position to win, but it just happens to
- 5:55Speaker 3: James every single time.
- 5:58Speaker 2: He gets you right to the finish.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Line, but he just can't get you across the finish line.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Virginia Tech treated early to the James Franklin experience here.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Maybe one of these days, I'm sure we're years or
- 6:12Speaker 4: decades away, we might get some technology to be able
- 6:16Speaker 4: to figure out if the kick actually was good. I mean,
- 6:19Speaker 4: like I said, I'm sure we're years and years and
- 6:22Speaker 4: years away from maybe putting a chip in the ball
- 6:24Speaker 4: and figuring out where exactly across the plane of the goal.
- 6:28Speaker 2: And until then, we just.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Got, I mean, couldn't we just shoot lasers out of the,
- 6:34Speaker 3: I have a garage sensor. I could take him out
- 6:38Speaker 3: of my garage and just put them on top.
- 6:41Speaker 2: And we'd be fine.
- 6:42Speaker 1: The kicker cannot leave that in the hands of the ref,
- 6:44Speaker 1: but you have peaked Mikey Hayes curiosity here with lasers
- 6:47Speaker 1: coming from the goalpost.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Mikey, hey, you perked up there. You liked that idea.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I mean, we're introducing lasers? Yes, please. Lasers are never.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Put it on the pole.
- 7:00Speaker 2: On top of their freaking heads.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Are lasers ever a bad idea?
- 7:02Speaker 2: We were ready to shoot a first down line.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Why not? I wonder how much a listening audience will
- 7:09Speaker 3: understand an Austin Powers reference nowadays. Like, we sit here
- 7:12Speaker 3: on the 20th anniversary of the Dome coming, Falcon Saints
- 7:15Speaker 3: coming up on Monday Night Football, and none of these
- 7:18Speaker 3: kids know about Katrina. No. None of these kids know
- 7:20Speaker 3: about Austin Powers.
- 7:22Speaker 1: No.
- 7:23Speaker 3: You know who the kids do know about?
- 7:24Speaker 2: Who?
- 7:25Speaker 3: The Leisman winner this week.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yes.
- 7:27Speaker 3: And I hate to do it because I love him
- 7:28Speaker 3: and I think he's great. But Kamario Taylor.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
- 7:31Speaker 3: He played in the debutante bowl. Him and Keelan Russell,
- 7:35Speaker 3: these sexy young things coming down the stairwell. We're all applauding,
- 7:39Speaker 3: welcoming them into society. And unfortunately, Taylor was found wanting
- 7:44Speaker 3: a media fumble, a media pick six, and that game
- 7:47Speaker 3: was over right as it started, boys.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Congratulations to this week's Leisman Trophy winners.
- 7:56Speaker 4: See, I thought we were going to do like a
- 7:58Speaker 4: season-long type thing. I wanted to give like, we always
- 8:02Speaker 4: used to give like the September Heisman, I think like
- 8:03Speaker 4: the Michigan Quarterback.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Won the September Heisman like for like 11 years straight.
- 8:08Speaker 4: If we're giving out like the early season Leisman trophy.
- 8:11Speaker 2: It's got to go to John Mateer, right?
- 8:14Speaker 4: I mean, eight sacks, six turnovers against the real teams
- 8:17Speaker 4: that he's played.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Yes.
- 8:19Speaker 2: But we've seen him clean and jerk like 590 pounds, right?
- 8:22Speaker 3: You're right.
- 8:23Speaker 1: The problem is we started this show week three of
- 8:25Speaker 1: the college football season.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:28Speaker 4: So the three-week Leisman winner goes to, that's actually even better, Stu,
- 8:34Speaker 4: because it takes out the UTEP game that he actually
- 8:37Speaker 4: played good in and includes everything else.
- 8:39Speaker 1: So retro. I like it. By the way, Virginia Tech
- 8:42Speaker 1: lost that game the second someone called that game a
- 8:44Speaker 1: big game.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Hey, Penn State's wishing they were going to have the
- 8:49Speaker 4: opportunity to be close in big games.
- 8:51Speaker 2: How about that?
- 8:51Speaker 4: Maybe Penn State can be like the Leisman Trophy team
- 8:54Speaker 4: of the year so.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Far, too.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Yes.
- 8:55Speaker 1: I felt bad for Kamario Taylor, by the way. I did.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Alabama did what Alabama does. We talked about this before
- 9:01Speaker 1: the weekend kind of kicked off. I love teams when
- 9:04Speaker 1: they're trying to defend their brand and say, hey, maybe
- 9:07Speaker 1: you think you've arrived, but you haven't arrived yet. We're
- 9:09Speaker 1: still Alabama. We're going to beat you up, and we're
- 9:12Speaker 1: going to do it on your home field. I kind
- 9:14Speaker 1: of felt bad because Kamario Taylor, I mean, the skill
- 9:17Speaker 1: set just kind of stands.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Out to you, Bob.
- 9:19Speaker 1: He's a ridiculously talented quarterback. But, man, did Alabama make
- 9:23Speaker 1: him look pretty pedestrian on Saturday. They really did.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and look, again, to be clear, I am still
- 9:31Speaker 3: betting on Kamario Taylor long-term. I still love him. You
- 9:34Speaker 3: mentioned the skill set. You would have to be blind–
- 9:37Speaker 3: to watch that man throw a football and not understand
- 9:40Speaker 3: just inherently and immediately what is so exciting about it.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:44Speaker 3: So I like, like at Mississippi state, they're still going
- 9:47Speaker 3: to be better this year. Like there'll be more than
- 9:48Speaker 3: a cute story. They'll be good for them. But there
- 9:51Speaker 3: was an idea out there that maybe they were actually
- 9:54Speaker 3: ready to hang and Alabama quickly disabused of us of
- 9:58Speaker 3: those notions.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Um, would say injury.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Yeah, go ahead.
- 10:02Speaker 2: No, I was going to say injuries early in the game.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Heard them. And I think the biggest play of the
- 10:07Speaker 4: game was I can't remember who the receiver was downfield
- 10:10Speaker 4: on the right sideline, wide open. And he just stepped
- 10:15Speaker 4: out of bed and like they get a conversion there.
- 10:17Speaker 4: They probably score and we're back to that one point
- 10:20Speaker 4: game and one possession game. So who the hell knows
- 10:23Speaker 4: what I was, but you're right. Anyone who is going
- 10:25Speaker 4: to sit there and, ultimately kill Mississippi state for, for
- 10:28Speaker 4: losing that game. Like it's clear offensively, they are massively improved.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Defense got some problems, but this is still going to
- 10:35Speaker 4: be a bull team moving forward.
- 10:36Speaker 3: So the opposite side of this though, is the Bama perspective.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Like Stu was getting at here. And right now I
- 10:41Speaker 3: think you look at the big 10, you look at
- 10:43Speaker 3: the sec. I think you still have a handful of
- 10:47Speaker 3: like tier one teams, right? SEC is probably Georgia, Texas, Alabama,
- 10:52Speaker 3: Big Ten. I would say Ohio State, Indiana, maybe Oregon.
- 10:55Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Everybody else is kind of feeling like the NFL. So
- 11:00Speaker 3: don't throw Mississippi State completely out, but you got to
- 11:03Speaker 3: focus on Bama here because for all the Camario Taylor
- 11:06Speaker 3: talk there, Keelan Russell. Keelan Russell right now through a
- 11:10Speaker 3: quarter of the year may be the best quarterback in
- 11:13Speaker 3: the entire country.
- 11:15Speaker 2: He's been fantastic. Yes.
- 11:17Speaker 1: How much would we be talking about Keelan Russell if
- 11:19Speaker 1: his last name was Manning?
- 11:24Speaker 4: He'd be number one in the Heisman rankings polls right
- 11:27Speaker 4: now by a mile.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:29Speaker 4: But this is going to be a massive game for Alabama.
- 11:34Speaker 4: I was not super high on Alabama coming into this year.
- 11:39Speaker 4: I had some questions, but I did think they would
- 11:42Speaker 4: be undefeated at this point.
- 11:43Speaker 2: In the year.
- 11:43Speaker 4: And now, but the rubber hits the road for, for
- 11:46Speaker 4: the tie. They're a small home favorite over Georgia. They
- 11:49Speaker 4: beaten the Bulldogs last couple of years in the regular season,
- 11:52Speaker 4: got annihilated by them in the sec championship game. They've
- 11:56Speaker 4: got four power, four wins already. So the arrow is up,
- 12:00Speaker 4: but now comes the, the poor old little, little Georgia
- 12:04Speaker 4: Bulldogs is an underdog in the game. And, I don't
- 12:07Speaker 4: know how they could possibly go into Brian Denny and
- 12:10Speaker 4: hang around. It is the game of the week and
- 12:13Speaker 4: certainly has an opportunity to upset the pecking order in
- 12:16Speaker 4: the SEC.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I just don't get how we don't talk about Russell.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I haven't heard his name discussed at all as it
- 12:21Speaker 1: relates to the Heisman Trophy. He's the quarterback at the
- 12:25Speaker 1: biggest brand in college football, and that team is undefeated. Now,
- 12:29Speaker 1: that might change here if they lose to Georgia, but still,
- 12:32Speaker 1: He is one of the main reasons, if not the
- 12:35Speaker 1: main reason, that team is undefeated and playing so well.
- 12:39Speaker 3: And really, Barry, you mentioned a play that defined that
- 12:42Speaker 3: game on Saturday. The 3rd-and-19 throw. Yep. 3rd-and-19, early in
- 12:44Speaker 3: the game. Mississippi State had the disastrous start, but if
- 12:50Speaker 3: they come up with a stop here, they're down a
- 12:53Speaker 3: single score.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Like, okay, we got a game.
- 12:55Speaker 3: We got life. And Keelan Russell's rolling out. He throws
- 12:58Speaker 3: across his body. He throws the receiver open, finding the
- 13:02Speaker 3: hole in the zone. He's fantastic. There's nothing he cannot do.
- 13:06Speaker 3: My question that we're going to learn this weekend about
- 13:08Speaker 3: Alabama is if you look at where it went so
- 13:10Speaker 3: wrong last year, it was in the trenches. That offensive line,
- 13:14Speaker 3: they could not run the ball, which is inexcusable for
- 13:17Speaker 3: an Alabama football team. They kicked Mississippi State's ass in
- 13:20Speaker 3: that regard. Georgia's probably the toughest defense in the entire
- 13:24Speaker 3: country to put this to the test against. So, like,
- 13:27Speaker 3: if we want to see, okay, is Kalen DeBoer real?
- 13:30Speaker 3: Is Bama real?
- 13:30Speaker 2: Are they back?
- 13:31Speaker 3: To being a true national championship threat. Watch how they
- 13:35Speaker 3: run the ball against Georgia this weekend. That'll be the
- 13:38Speaker 3: main kind of weather vane that I'm looking for for
- 13:41Speaker 3: charting their course going forward.
- 13:43Speaker 4: And that's something that I'm watching Alabama football the last
- 13:46Speaker 4: few years, like I have the privilege to do with
- 13:48Speaker 4: Mark Ingram. He has mentioned that that is clearly the
- 13:52Speaker 4: biggest difference and a point of emphasis that he'd like
- 13:56Speaker 4: to see them make from the Saban era to where
- 13:58Speaker 4: they are now with Caelan DeBoer and that Ryan Grubb offense.
- 14:01Speaker 4: The running game is not what it's been used for,
- 14:03Speaker 4: and I think that's the biggest concern that a lot
- 14:06Speaker 4: of Alabama fans do have is that when push comes
- 14:09Speaker 4: to shove, can they control the game up front with
- 14:12Speaker 4: an offensive line that used to be dominant? And we'll see.
- 14:16Speaker 4: They're going to need to run. I mean, I don't
- 14:18Speaker 4: think they can beat Georgia by doing what they've done
- 14:21Speaker 4: so far.
- 14:22Speaker 3: The other crazy part about BAM is, like, if any
- 14:25Speaker 3: other school had their year last year, it would have
- 14:27Speaker 3: been a resounding success, right? You play for a conference championship,
- 14:30Speaker 3: you win a playoff game. And yet to us, it
- 14:33Speaker 3: was a bit disastrous because they're being judged by an
- 14:36Speaker 3: impossible past. So Alabama, big win. They look great. They
- 14:40Speaker 3: kind of assert themselves opposite side of the coin. Florida
- 14:45Speaker 3: was the hot pick or the hot team last week,
- 14:48Speaker 3: jumping to the top 10, most dominant rushing attack in
- 14:50Speaker 3: the entire country. Stu, who's the O.C.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Is it Philo? It's a good weekend to forget. That's
- 14:57Speaker 3: the third time you've answered that question.
- 14:59Speaker 1: I mean, give me a reason to remember your name.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Buster something? I mean.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you go, Buster.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Unfortunately, Faulkner went bust this weekend as that Mizzou front
- 15:11Speaker 3: completely dominated the Florida Gator rushing attack. And Bear, it
- 15:16Speaker 3: has everything to do with keeping them off schedule. Florida,
- 15:21Speaker 3: they stayed behind the chains, and that is not a
- 15:24Speaker 3: team that is going to do well from third and
- 15:26Speaker 3: long or if you're playing behind on the scoreboard.
- 15:30Speaker 4: That was the biggest question I had about Florida. We
- 15:32Speaker 4: loved what they had done so far, but they hadn't
- 15:35Speaker 4: faced any adversity from being behind in a game. If
- 15:39Speaker 4: they needed to throw, could Aaron Philo make the throws
- 15:42Speaker 4: and do it? on the road Saturday in Missouri. They couldn't,
- 15:46Speaker 4: doesn't mean he won't moving forward. But I want to
- 15:49Speaker 4: ask moving forward for Florida now, that was a big loss.
- 15:52Speaker 2: I mean, do we.
- 15:53Speaker 4: Think a 9-3 team is going to make the college
- 15:56Speaker 4: football playoff? Because they've got the game at Texas. They've
- 16:00Speaker 4: got the Georgia game. They're going to be considerable underdogs
- 16:03Speaker 4: in both of those games. Say they lose, then they've
- 16:07Speaker 4: got to win everything else. Nine and three, is that
- 16:10Speaker 4: going to be good? Do we still think Florida has
- 16:12Speaker 4: the potential to get to maybe even pull an upset
- 16:14Speaker 4: in one of those two games?
- 16:17Speaker 3: I mean, I'm not going to completely bail in terms
- 16:19Speaker 3: of them pulling off an upset. Their pass defense is
- 16:23Speaker 3: just so putrid. And Austin Simmons and Caden Lee showed
- 16:26Speaker 3: it firsthand. And, again, it's going to be up to
- 16:29Speaker 3: even more, though. It's going to be up to can
- 16:31Speaker 3: those defenses. I mean, Mizzou had 11 TFLs.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:34Speaker 2: In that game.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Like you want to talk about creating havoc.
- 16:36Speaker 2: And then we're down guys up front too, which was amazing.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Well, and the thing was Mizzou was clearly saying, we're
- 16:41Speaker 3: going to load the box. Our safeties are going to
- 16:43Speaker 3: trigger like that. When we, when we even sniff a run.
- 16:46Speaker 3: And if you want to make us pay through the air, Florida,
- 16:49Speaker 3: you're welcome to try. Unfortunately, Florida could not. What that means.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Jaden ball, who by far looked like the best running
- 16:55Speaker 3: back in the entire country ends the game with 13
- 16:57Speaker 3: yards on 12 carries and And he got 12.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Yards on his first run.
- 17:02Speaker 3: 11 carries for one yard after that initial tone.
- 17:07Speaker 1: So bear, let's play this out just for a second.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Let's say Florida. Okay. They lose to Texas. They lose
- 17:12Speaker 1: to Georgia. They win the remainder of their games. Do
- 17:15Speaker 1: you think they're a playoff team having beaten Mississippi, but
- 17:18Speaker 1: they lose those two games, right?
- 17:20Speaker 2: It's going to be interesting.
- 17:22Speaker 4: I mean, obviously the answer lies within what the rest
- 17:25Speaker 4: of the nation is doing, but if you're looking at
- 17:27Speaker 4: nine and three, with a decent strength of schedule, but
- 17:32Speaker 4: your one win is at home against Ole Miss, and
- 17:36Speaker 4: who knows how the hell Ole Miss... We're basing a
- 17:40Speaker 4: lot of results off of games involving Ole Miss, and
- 17:43Speaker 4: we don't know how good Ole Miss is.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Yeah, but they beat.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Ole Miss at the... They beat them at the exact
- 17:49Speaker 1: right time.
- 17:50Speaker 2: They did.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Coming off a win at LSU, I mean, they beat
- 17:52Speaker 1: them at the exact right time. There's something to be
- 17:54Speaker 1: said for that, right?
- 17:56Speaker 4: It feels like It feels like Texas last year. It
- 18:01Speaker 4: feels like South Carolina the year before, Alabama the year before.
- 18:05Speaker 4: It kind of feels like they sit in that 9-3
- 18:08Speaker 4: and they're going to need some help, I would think.
- 18:10Speaker 3: I was going to say, we have an increasingly large
- 18:12Speaker 3: sample size that 9-3 will not get you in, especially
- 18:17Speaker 3: when you look at how top-heavy the Big Ten and
- 18:19Speaker 3: the SEC appear to be, combined with the fact that
- 18:21Speaker 3: Notre Dame has already kind of checkmarked like their playoff spot, yeah,
- 18:25Speaker 3: I don't think that's going to get him in. That said,
- 18:28Speaker 3: still could be a massively improved.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Season for Florida. Like if you're a Gator, you can't
- 18:31Speaker 2: give up. What does this mean.
- 18:33Speaker 3: For Mizzou real quickly before we move on here? Because
- 18:35Speaker 3: Eli Drinkwitz needed this win like a man in the
- 18:39Speaker 3: desert needs water.
- 18:41Speaker 4: No, he totally did. We gave all those numbers last
- 18:44Speaker 4: week about Missouri. and lost the nine straight regular season
- 18:48Speaker 4: games were all in 10 versus top 10 team. But that,
- 18:51Speaker 4: that was a massive win. That was a win that
- 18:53Speaker 4: hadn't been eluding them for a while. And now you
- 18:55Speaker 4: look at Missouri and where they have kind of moved
- 18:58Speaker 4: into the, the area in the rankings where I was
- 19:00Speaker 4: talking about this yesterday, like I think from eight on
- 19:04Speaker 4: down in the rankings, it's just kind of like interchangeable
- 19:08Speaker 4: teams that are all kind of the same and filler,
- 19:10Speaker 4: but Missouri has an opportunity now. Well, Game at Ole
- 19:16Speaker 4: Miss coming up. They used to have Texas and Georgia too.
- 19:18Speaker 4: They got a lot of work to do. So you're
- 19:20Speaker 4: probably looking at like a 9-3 type ceiling for them.
- 19:24Speaker 4: And there are a lot of people all upset in
- 19:26Speaker 4: the rankings this week too about like why are they
- 19:29Speaker 4: ahead of Mississippi State there? Mississippi State beat them pretty so.
- 19:35Speaker 4: But I think for Missouri moving forward, the narrative changes
- 19:40Speaker 4: for them that they can win the big game. They
- 19:42Speaker 4: can get over the hump. And that was a good
- 19:44Speaker 4: spot for them. And now they are in the middle
- 19:46Speaker 4: of a murderer's row type portion of their schedule as well.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Just like a lot of teams in the secr.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Uh t bob before we break here i'm just i'm
- 19:54Speaker 1: stuck on florida okay and whether a three loss team
- 19:57Speaker 1: can make it to the playoffs let's say they beat
- 19:59Speaker 1: texas or georgia they lose they win one they lose
- 20:02Speaker 1: one yeah okay so they have two losses Then they
- 20:05Speaker 1: lose to Florida State in the final game of the season.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Are they making the playoff? No, because what you heard
- 20:10Speaker 1: in Tallahassee over the weekend was a pulse. That team
- 20:13Speaker 1: now has a pulse, and Mike Norvell saved his job
- 20:17Speaker 1: at least for a week. But I am saying they
- 20:19Speaker 1: have beaten. So think about this, Bear. You're on the committee.
- 20:22Speaker 1: They beat Mississippi coming off the LSU win. They beat
- 20:25Speaker 1: either Texas or Georgia, but they still have three losses.
- 20:29Speaker 1: You put them in?
- 20:32Speaker 4: That loss will have come at the absolute wrong time
- 20:35Speaker 4: at the end of the season. That will be the
- 20:38Speaker 4: last impression that the committee has. That will be a
- 20:44Speaker 4: very difficult omission, I think. 9-3 with the win over
- 20:48Speaker 4: Texas and Georgia and Ole Miss, but you lose to
- 20:51Speaker 4: Florida State.
- 20:52Speaker 2: At the end of the year. That's going to be
- 20:53Speaker 2: a tough one to overcome, I think.
- 20:56Speaker 3: That will really– Flawed or not, they've shown a real
- 21:01Speaker 3: hesitance to want to put a three-loss team over a
- 21:03Speaker 3: two-win team. Or excuse me, over a two-loss team. Unless
- 21:05Speaker 3: that loss comes in the conference championship, that can kind
- 21:07Speaker 3: of change things up. So even with that signature win, no,
- 21:10Speaker 3: I don't think they would get in. I said that
- 21:12Speaker 3: Mizzou needed that like a man in the desert needs water.
- 21:15Speaker 3: I should have said they needed it like Mikey A
- 21:17Speaker 3: needs to score.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Because there's just nothing happening.
- 21:20Speaker 3: I mean, it's really dry out there right now.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Oh, you meant the Jets and Yankees. Yeah, and life.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Jets, Yankees, just in general.
- 21:30Speaker 2: All right.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Let's go ahead and let's take a little break here
- 21:34Speaker 3: on the college football show. It's two gods of the bear.
- 21:36Speaker 3: And when we get back, we still got to get
- 21:37Speaker 3: to Minnesota, Michigan. We got to talk Miami, uh, Northwestern,
- 21:41Speaker 3: Ohio state. So a lot to get to here. The
- 21:44Speaker 3: college football show. All right, welcome back to College Football Show.
- 22:10Speaker 3: It's who gots a bear, and right now it's time
- 22:12Speaker 3: to talk about just an implosion of the program in
- 22:16Speaker 3: some ways here, and that's Michigan. Shout out to the
- 22:19Speaker 3: Golden Gophers, P.J. Fleck and Company. Minnesota gets it done
- 22:23Speaker 3: at home. They beat Michigan for the first time in
- 22:25Speaker 3: five decades, 20 to 14. And Bear, Michigan has what,
- 22:31Speaker 3: for my money, could have been the single worst offensive
- 22:35Speaker 3: quarter of football that we have ever seen in our
- 22:38Speaker 3: entire lives in that third quarter.
- 22:41Speaker 2: It was really, really hard to watch.
- 22:45Speaker 4: And it's just, Watching the Utah offense last year with
- 22:50Speaker 4: that offensive line, the court, Jason Becks and Dan Pierre,
- 22:55Speaker 4: and watching this offensive line in Michigan with Underwood, it's
- 22:58Speaker 4: just night and day.
- 23:01Speaker 2: The difference in.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Athleticism from what Utah had in what Utah.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Michigan's like, we are caveman, big man. We're going to
- 23:09Speaker 2: just run straight ahead and run.
- 23:11Speaker 4: And what they got in Utah was great. It just
- 23:14Speaker 4: isn't working. I mean, I love the throwaway on fourth
- 23:17Speaker 4: down at the end of the game.
- 23:20Speaker 2: That was a nice touch.
- 23:22Speaker 4: I mean, you don't get the fifth down unless you're Colorado, Missouri, 1990.
- 23:26Speaker 4: But I think this asks a very big question right now.
- 23:30Speaker 4: You look at Michigan. Is Michigan going to make a bowl?
- 23:33Speaker 2: They're going to have to sweep Penn State.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Yeah. Penn State, Sunge, and Michigan State. They're going to
- 23:39Speaker 4: have to win all three of those games, I think,
- 23:41Speaker 4: to finish 6-6. Because I think they're going to lose
- 23:43Speaker 4: at Oregon. I think they're obviously going to lose at
- 23:45Speaker 4: Ohio State. And I think they're going to lose to
- 23:47Speaker 4: UCLA as well. It's so funny sometimes, like in the
- 23:52Speaker 4: coaching carousel in this world, like home run hire. What
- 23:56Speaker 4: a great hire. He's going to do great. Maybe it
- 24:00Speaker 4: wasn't such a home run higher for Michigan and Kyle Whittingham.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Maybe this isn't going to work out like everybody thought.
- 24:07Speaker 2: I hope it does.
- 24:08Speaker 4: For Kyle to end his career, which was so great
- 24:12Speaker 4: at Utah, what he did there, to end it on
- 24:14Speaker 4: a down note potentially, Michigan kind of sucked for him.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Stu, do you think when you look at Whittingham and
- 24:20Speaker 3: by all accounts, he's like a great guy, like Bear
- 24:23Speaker 3: alluded to, he did really special things at Utah, but
- 24:27Speaker 3: he was in a job where he was very comfortable, right?
- 24:31Speaker 3: And his level of success for the most part was
- 24:34Speaker 3: accepted by the fan base, maybe waned a bit at
- 24:36Speaker 3: the end there. but he almost looks like a man
- 24:39Speaker 3: that's out of depth a little bit, out of his depth.
- 24:43Speaker 3: The pressure, the expectation at Michigan, how much football means
- 24:47Speaker 3: every single game. Do you think Whittingham's up to the task?
- 24:51Speaker 1: It doesn't help that his quarterback stinks. I can't believe
- 24:54Speaker 1: Jerome Moore won nine games with that quarterback a year ago,
- 24:57Speaker 1: and no one goes to Minneapolis and beats Minnesota 19
- 25:01Speaker 1: consecutive times. It just doesn't happen, so I'm going to
- 25:04Speaker 1: cut him some slack, but yes, I do believe Kyle
- 25:07Speaker 1: Whittingham should have stayed at Utah. No one cares. If
- 25:10Speaker 1: you have nine wins at Utah, ten wins at Utah,
- 25:12Speaker 1: nobody cares. That's a success. When you go to Michigan,
- 25:16Speaker 1: the expectations get ratcheted up to a place where I'm
- 25:19Speaker 1: not certain Kyle Whittingham was prepared for what was going
- 25:23Speaker 1: to happen to him if, God forbid, he lost a
- 25:25Speaker 1: couple of games early. And here he is losing a
- 25:28Speaker 1: couple of games early, and Michigan fans want him fired.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Sometimes you're better off just staying in Utah. That is
- 25:34Speaker 1: the lesson learned.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Yep.
- 25:36Speaker 1: From this particular exercise. In Utah, nobody cares. Nine wins
- 25:40Speaker 1: is like winning a national championship. In Michigan, nine wins
- 25:44Speaker 1: get you fired.
- 25:44Speaker 3: How about that, T-Bob? Yeah, and it was, again, it
- 25:48Speaker 3: was from like a watching standpoint. This was like clockwork
- 25:51Speaker 3: orange torture levels. of watching that third quarter. So you
- 25:55Speaker 3: muff a punt off the bat. You get the ball back.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Bryson Rudd immediately throws a pick. You get the ball
- 26:00Speaker 3: back again to start the fourth. Immediately throws another pick.
- 26:04Speaker 3: And make no mistake, Michigan's defense, I think, is like
- 26:07Speaker 3: a top 10 unit in the entire country.
- 26:10Speaker 2: That's how bad the offense is.
- 26:12Speaker 3: That not even Michigan's defense can survive the game pressure
- 26:17Speaker 3: that the.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Offense has put on them.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Guys, the offense had the ball. Three times in the
- 26:22Speaker 3: fourth quarter, despite all the bullshit. Three times down six.
- 26:26Speaker 3: It didn't even sniff the end zone. It didn't even
- 26:29Speaker 3: make it exciting. A single possession. I know everything gets
- 26:34Speaker 3: pinned on the quarterback. It probably goes beyond that. But
- 26:37Speaker 3: you just got to make a change at quarterback.
- 26:40Speaker 2: You have to.
- 26:41Speaker 3: You got to try out Carr, even if you think
- 26:42Speaker 3: he's worse, just to see what happens.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Even if you think he's worse, you can't do it
- 26:47Speaker 1: if you think he's worse, though, can you?
- 26:48Speaker 2: You have to.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Every now and then in football, you have to try
- 26:52Speaker 3: a guy that you see in practice, and you're like,
- 26:54Speaker 3: this guy's not as good, but these people won't shut
- 26:57Speaker 3: the fuck up. So I'm going to have to put
- 26:59Speaker 3: him in there, and you go see.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Yes. Go see what I'm saying.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Everybody fucking loves the backup quarterback until he gets out
- 27:06Speaker 4: there and it's like, oh.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Shit, he sucks.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Yes, I want Underwood back.
- 27:09Speaker 4: I don't know about that. The big picture, I can't
- 27:13Speaker 4: remember if we talked about this on this show, if
- 27:16Speaker 4: it was somewhere else. This is going to change everything.
- 27:20Speaker 4: NIL pay for play type strategy. If you got a
- 27:23Speaker 4: quarterback who's making whatever it, whatever Dave and Ellison and
- 27:29Speaker 4: the Michigan people anchored up for the 12 million or
- 27:31Speaker 4: whatever it was, people now are not going to put
- 27:34Speaker 4: up 10, $ 12 million to bring a high school quarterback
- 27:38Speaker 4: in and eat up a large portion of their pay-for-play
- 27:41Speaker 4: budget to bring a guy in who you're going to
- 27:44Speaker 4: have to play right away. And then if he isn't
- 27:46Speaker 4: any good, it's like we got nothing else around, nothing
- 27:49Speaker 4: to support building a roster. That's why you look at
- 27:52Speaker 4: what Miami's done, you look at what Oregon's done, some
- 27:55Speaker 4: other programs as well. maybe you don't like it, you
- 27:58Speaker 4: don't like the system the way it is right now,
- 28:00Speaker 4: but they focus on other positions in the recruiting to pay,
- 28:03Speaker 4: and then they'll go out and just pluck someone from
- 28:06Speaker 4: another school that's already established. This has, I think, bigger
- 28:11Speaker 4: ramifications to just the fact that he isn't being very
- 28:14Speaker 4: good right now.
- 28:15Speaker 1: I think they have no ramifications. I mean, are you
- 28:18Speaker 1: suggesting that teams are going to stop, that programs are
- 28:21Speaker 1: going to stop paying quarterbacks big-time money out of high
- 28:24Speaker 1: school Just based on one or two guys? No way, Bear.
- 28:27Speaker 1: They're going to spend the money.
- 28:29Speaker 2: And they have the money.
- 28:29Speaker 3: I mean, look, because the two biggest ones that we've
- 28:31Speaker 3: seen at a high score are Iyamali Ava at Tennessee.
- 28:34Speaker 3: and now Underwood at Michigan, and they've gone disastrously, whereas
- 28:39Speaker 3: every one of these big-time transfers, like, if you're allocating resources,
- 28:42Speaker 3: I think Baylor's spot on here. Because the big schools
- 28:45Speaker 3: that have the money, you'd rather pay for a proven product.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but every coach thinks they could turn DJ Lagway
- 28:50Speaker 1: into the next, you know, I mean, Patrick Mahomes.
- 28:53Speaker 4: He had five touchdowns this week for Baylor. He's actually
- 28:56Speaker 4: looked pretty good. Baylor's a sneaky four-on-one.
- 28:58Speaker 1: I know, but you're talking about the most important position
- 29:02Speaker 1: in the sport, and coaches think they can coach up
- 29:05Speaker 1: that position. They're going to pay a guy out of
- 29:07Speaker 1: high school whether they think he's great or not. Because
- 29:10Speaker 1: they think they can turn him into great.
- 29:13Speaker 3: I think you're going to see guys are still going
- 29:17Speaker 3: to get paid, certainly your points, Stu. But I do
- 29:19Speaker 3: think you're going to see a bit of a softer market,
- 29:22Speaker 3: not as high of a commitment, maybe like a million
- 29:25Speaker 3: instead of three million a year or whatever out of
- 29:27Speaker 3: high school. But we'll see.
- 29:29Speaker 2: You know what?
- 29:30Speaker 3: Now it's the time of the show where, Bear, you
- 29:31Speaker 3: get to gloat and you get to champion because the
- 29:34Speaker 3: Miami Hurricanes dominate the Clemson Tigers, a name.
- 29:40Speaker 2: In name only.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Clemson sucks, but Miami looks fantastic once again.
- 29:44Speaker 1: I thought you were talking about that Temple win. I mean,
- 29:46Speaker 1: what a weekend for Bear.
- 29:50Speaker 4: I told you, USF, the most fraudulent 4-0 team in
- 29:52Speaker 4: the country.
- 29:53Speaker 3: You did say it, yes.
- 29:55Speaker 2: As was.
- 29:56Speaker 4: But that was a good win for Miami on Saturday
- 29:59Speaker 4: night because everything didn't go their way. Injuries, it is
- 30:04Speaker 4: unbelievable the number of injuries that they have encountered this year.
- 30:08Speaker 4: And fortunately, they have the Idol week coming up, and
- 30:12Speaker 4: I expect that we'll be talking with Mario Cristobal later
- 30:15Speaker 4: in the week on this show during the Miami game.
- 30:19Speaker 4: to get his thoughts on what he's seen so far
- 30:21Speaker 4: and what they hope moving forward as Florida State comes up.
- 30:24Speaker 4: But the biggest takeaway for me was just the accumulation
- 30:31Speaker 4: of talent that they have built on that roster. Lightfoot
- 30:36Speaker 4: goes down. Wilson just emerges and steps up and has
- 30:39Speaker 4: his best game of the season so far. Chase Smith
- 30:43Speaker 4: has a ridiculous game. O'Connor goes out for a while.
- 30:51Speaker 4: Secondary hangs in there. Offensive lineman McCoy goes out. Buchanan
- 30:55Speaker 4: goes out. They both come back in, which I don't
- 30:56Speaker 4: know how. They came back in second half. They just
- 31:00Speaker 4: lean on Clemson and Fletcher and Mallory have a really
- 31:04Speaker 4: good second half as they kind of milk milk that
- 31:06Speaker 4: game away. I think that that is the biggest takeaway
- 31:09Speaker 4: for me was that even with all of these injuries,
- 31:12Speaker 4: Miami has a steely national championship type mentality. And Kirk
- 31:19Speaker 4: Herbstreit alluded to this on the broadcast, and we had
- 31:22Speaker 4: talked about it as well. If and when they are
- 31:26Speaker 4: able to get a lot of these guys, I think
- 31:28Speaker 4: Xavier Lucas will be back for Florida State. I would
- 31:30Speaker 4: expect Doja Frederick to be back at some.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Point before then.
- 31:34Speaker 4: By playoff time, This is going to be a really
- 31:38Speaker 4: deep team, and their starters are going to be healthy.
- 31:42Speaker 2: So I'm pretty happy with where Miami.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Is right now.
- 31:49Speaker 3: It is crazy how quickly... Miami has gained the benefit
- 31:54Speaker 3: of the doubt. They were a punchline for so long.
- 31:57Speaker 3: I used to call him Krista fraud. He used to
- 32:00Speaker 3: blow games, but it's, it's kind of a testament to
- 32:03Speaker 3: what the, the magic of a, of, of a deep
- 32:06Speaker 3: playoff run can do for, for perception, runner up confidence.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 32:11Speaker 3: But that's what I'm saying. Like previous to last year,
- 32:14Speaker 3: you'd expect Miami to screw up. Now you're begging them.
- 32:16Speaker 2: No, it's Miami.
- 32:16Speaker 3: They're going to figure out a way. They're fully, fully,
- 32:18Speaker 3: fully back. They look like it national title contender. Stu,
- 32:23Speaker 3: are they the best team in the country?
- 32:24Speaker 1: I think they're the most talented team in the country.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Feel free to play somebody. I mean, anybody.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Three conference road wins right now, Stu.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Against two. I think what Bear is excited about is
- 32:35Speaker 1: this team looks like they have NFL players all over
- 32:38Speaker 1: the field, and it looks like their backups might be
- 32:40Speaker 1: better than some of the starters. And I think that's
- 32:42Speaker 1: when people talk about the U being back. That's what
- 32:46Speaker 1: they're talking about. When you are three deep at running back,
- 32:49Speaker 1: when you're six deep at wide receiver, when you're two
- 32:52Speaker 1: or three deep at tight end, when you're three deep
- 32:55Speaker 1: at defensive end, they lost their two defensive ends. They
- 32:58Speaker 1: plugged in two new ones, and they're playing, I don't
- 33:00Speaker 1: want to say just as well, but they're playing at
- 33:03Speaker 1: a pretty damn high level. So Miami is back, and
- 33:05Speaker 1: you trust Cristobal more now because you've seen him do it.
- 33:08Speaker 1: You've seen him take his team to a national championship game.
- 33:12Speaker 2: And they've always shown up in big plays, in big games, T-Bob.
- 33:16Speaker 4: It was never... the game like Clemson. It was never
- 33:19Speaker 4: a game against– it was always like they got SMU
- 33:23Speaker 4: or Louisville or someone like that, that that's the opponent
- 33:27Speaker 4: that's going to get them. But Steve was joking about
- 33:30Speaker 4: the schedule. There are a couple of games now this
- 33:32Speaker 4: year with a couple of teams where– perceptions kind of
- 33:35Speaker 4: change and narratives kind of change on whether it's a
- 33:38Speaker 4: good winner. The win at Wake Forest looks like a
- 33:40Speaker 4: hell of a much better win than it did at the, well,
- 33:43Speaker 4: Wake Forest went to, went to Louisville and won. You
- 33:45Speaker 4: look at the Notre Dame win against Wisconsin, Wisconsin, that's
- 33:48Speaker 4: their only loss. And that looks like a much better win.
- 33:51Speaker 4: Oregon's loss at Oklahoma state doesn't look as bad now
- 33:54Speaker 4: because Oklahoma state might be the best team in the
- 33:57Speaker 4: big 12. Northwestern, Indiana, like, oh, wow, Indiana survived. Wow,
- 34:03Speaker 4: Northwestern was a dominant team against Penn State. As the
- 34:06Speaker 4: season goes along, a lot of these wins are going
- 34:09Speaker 4: to look a hell of a lot different, I think,
- 34:10Speaker 4: than they did at the time they actually happened.
- 34:12Speaker 1: If Wake was in the SEC, Miami would be the
- 34:14Speaker 1: best team in the country, yes?
- 34:17Speaker 3: Okay okay here we go with your sec bias uh
- 34:23Speaker 3: you're probably right actually i know all right let's do
- 34:26Speaker 3: this let's go to quick break and then when we
- 34:27Speaker 3: get back we'll rapid fire put a bow on this
- 34:30Speaker 3: recap show here which you got to the.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Bear All right, welcome back.
- 34:54Speaker 3: College football show. So Friday night, we had a big
- 34:58Speaker 3: college football game. Penn State at Northwestern. Brand new field opening.
- 35:02Speaker 3: $ 800 million complex. We have Rachel who works in the show.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Of course, multi-time national champion. Over there at Northwestern. Look,
- 35:09Speaker 3: it's still a women's lacrosse school.
- 35:12Speaker 2: But there might be a pulse.
- 35:14Speaker 3: There might be a pulse with this football team. There
- 35:16Speaker 3: is a pulse, though, right now with this Northwestern football team.
- 35:20Speaker 3: Chip Kelly's got the boys running situational wing tee. Just
- 35:25Speaker 3: dominating Penn State, Matt Campbell, on really justifying a vision
- 35:32Speaker 3: and an investment from the university in a sport that
- 35:35Speaker 3: they've traditionally been pretty bad at, Stu.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Agap me, Stu. Agap me.
- 35:41Speaker 3: They've been bad.
- 35:42Speaker 1: But listen, Indiana proved that anyone can do it in
- 35:45Speaker 1: this day and age in college football. If you have
- 35:47Speaker 1: the money, if you build it, they will come. I
- 35:50Speaker 1: know Moonlight Graham said that. About Field of Dreams. This
- 35:53Speaker 1: is Otto Graham saying it about Northwestern. OK, if you
- 35:56Speaker 1: build that stadium, they will come. They have world class facilities.
- 35:59Speaker 1: It's a great school. T-Bob, as you know, it's a
- 36:01Speaker 1: fantastic city. 20 minutes outside of Chicago. The kids are very,
- 36:06Speaker 1: very smart there. And they have money. The reason I
- 36:09Speaker 1: point that out, the kids having money, means when they graduate,
- 36:13Speaker 1: they make more money. And if someone who graduates from
- 36:17Speaker 1: that school decides they want Northwestern to be relevant in
- 36:20Speaker 1: college football, then it's going to happen. The Ryans built
- 36:24Speaker 1: a beautiful field. The quarterback is pretty good. It's a
- 36:26Speaker 1: good Northwestern team. I don't know if Chip Kelly is
- 36:29Speaker 1: going to be there much longer, but I will tell
- 36:31Speaker 1: you this.
- 36:32Speaker 3: That it's a very good Northwestern team.
- 36:34Speaker 1: In fact, the best Northwestern team that I've seen since
- 36:37Speaker 1: I started paying attention to Northwestern when my daughter decided
- 36:40Speaker 1: to go there five years ago.
- 36:41Speaker 3: So, And I should say, I mentioned Kelly because of
- 36:44Speaker 3: the offense, but David Braun, the head coach, is a
- 36:46Speaker 3: hell of a coach. He's a former Big Ten coach
- 36:49Speaker 3: of the year. He's young.
- 36:50Speaker 2: He's exciting.
- 36:51Speaker 1: And he was forced in that position, keep in mind,
- 36:53Speaker 1: because Fitzgerald was the coach when he got there.
- 36:55Speaker 3: He was a coordinator.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Fitzgerald got fired, and Braun was forced into a position
- 37:00Speaker 1: in which he wasn't quite prepared for. But it seems
- 37:02Speaker 1: like he's getting better at his job as the years
- 37:05Speaker 1: go on here. They just extended him. I think Northwestern
- 37:08Speaker 1: is the next powerhouse surprise powerhouse in college football. How
- 37:11Speaker 1: about that?
- 37:13Speaker 3: If Indiana could do it, you know, and by the way,
- 37:15Speaker 3: second favorite box for the weekend here, 413 rushing yards
- 37:19Speaker 3: to 48.
- 37:20Speaker 4: That is just show that one, that one run by Hyman.
- 37:24Speaker 4: I think it was started the fourth quarter, maybe, or late.
- 37:27Speaker 4: I was just sitting in my hotel room and I
- 37:30Speaker 4: was getting tingly sensations all over like the, the nether
- 37:34Speaker 4: regions of my body watching that. That was just, oh,
- 37:37Speaker 4: they were just blocking there. Oh, it was gorgeous.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Seems a bit extreme, but okay.
- 37:41Speaker 3: It's interesting that you mentioned the situation that Braun took over, right?
- 37:47Speaker 3: Really had to earn it from the bottom. Well, from that,
- 37:49Speaker 3: Let's talk about the third baseman himself. Ryan Day and
- 37:52Speaker 3: Ohio State go into Kinnick. They dominate Iowa.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Bear, you were right.
- 37:57Speaker 3: I still think the people got to start to prepare
- 37:59Speaker 3: for potentially playoff Kirk.
- 38:01Speaker 1: No, they don't.
- 38:02Speaker 3: But not this day.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Not this day. Not this year.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Ohio State just dominates Iowa from the beginning. And really
- 38:08Speaker 3: what I love, they've ran the ball. Like Jeremiah Smith,
- 38:12Speaker 3: he's a story absolutely. But 47 attempts on the ground
- 38:15Speaker 3: for Ohio State. Say, now we're going to prove to
- 38:17Speaker 3: you that we can be pretty tough as well.
- 38:19Speaker 4: Yeah, it was one of those results that you just
- 38:22Speaker 4: kind of didn't think Iowa was going to be able
- 38:26Speaker 4: to keep.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Up on, and they weren't.
- 38:30Speaker 4: I'm looking forward to Ohio State this week. I would
- 38:34Speaker 4: love to know, I'm sure you've had some situations where
- 38:39Speaker 4: maybe you played Alabama one week, and you played McNeese State,
- 38:44Speaker 4: and then the following week you played.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Ole Miss or something.
- 38:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:49Speaker 2: You're, you're, you're, you're Ohio state last week. It's okay.
- 38:52Speaker 4: You got to go on the road. And I was
- 38:53Speaker 4: a hot team coming off this upset next week. You
- 38:56Speaker 4: go to Bloomington to try and get a little bit
- 38:58Speaker 4: of revenge from last year. And then what you're looking
- 39:01Speaker 4: at is this week, you're a 34 and a half
- 39:04Speaker 4: point favorite over dead team walk in Maryland. It's like,
- 39:07Speaker 4: I can't imagine Chip Kelly trying to get this team
- 39:10Speaker 4: ready to like be focused on the, on this week.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:14Speaker 3: So are you saying you like Maryland?
- 39:16Speaker 2: Oh, I couldn't bet your money on Maryland this week.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Dude, what have they allowed? 117 points or something like that?
- 39:23Speaker 3: Okay, okay, okay.
- 39:24Speaker 4: Just making sure. It's funny you say it now that
- 39:28Speaker 4: I'm thinking about it. This was the exact same thing.
- 39:30Speaker 4: same spot Nebraska was in last week, laying a big
- 39:33Speaker 4: number at home against Maryland, which was terrible, knowing that
- 39:36Speaker 4: they got Indiana coming to town this week. It was
- 39:39Speaker 4: every reason in the world to bet– uh maryland and
- 39:43Speaker 4: what had nebraska goes out and wins what whatever it
- 39:45Speaker 4: was 49 to 20 years so like they they couldn't
- 39:47Speaker 4: even get in the obvious spot last week to to
- 39:50Speaker 4: be a live dog so yeah this is a maryland
- 39:52Speaker 4: team that is going nowhere and clearly they're going to
- 39:56Speaker 4: have a coaching change at the end of the.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Year t-bob i marvel at jeremiah smith because of all
- 40:00Speaker 1: the great wide receivers that have come out of ohio
- 40:02Speaker 1: state they say this guy's head and shoulders better than
- 40:05Speaker 1: any of them. He's the favorite to win the Heisman
- 40:07Speaker 1: Trophy right now. Should he win the Heisman Trophy? He's
- 40:10Speaker 1: that good, right?
- 40:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look, dude, and why I want to
- 40:14Speaker 3: give Jeremiah Smith all the awards is he suffers from
- 40:18Speaker 3: that most rare... of circumstances where his own greatness works
- 40:24Speaker 3: against him because we take it for granted, right? Like
- 40:27Speaker 3: he's so dominant. He's been so dominant since day one
- 40:31Speaker 3: that you might get sucked up into this other narrative
- 40:33Speaker 3: or story because it's an underdog story.
- 40:35Speaker 2: It's unexpected.
- 40:36Speaker 3: This guy came out of nowhere. Jeremiah Smith has been
- 40:38Speaker 3: this guy since day one. He stepped on campus. He
- 40:41Speaker 3: was the fastest to ever get a black stripe on
- 40:43Speaker 3: his helmet at Ohio State. He's got the spectacular catches.
- 40:48Speaker 3: He runs the best routes. He's got the intangibles of
- 40:51Speaker 3: a professional player. I hope Jeremiah Smith wins all the awards.
- 40:54Speaker 3: All right, boys, rapid fire here on these next few games.
- 40:57Speaker 3: USC survives to beat Washington 25-21. Lincoln Riley, stinking Lincoln,
- 41:03Speaker 3: surviving for another week. That's what he does best.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Hold on, Barry.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, but that's what Lincoln Riley does best.
- 41:09Speaker 1: He survives every single week. He survives for another week.
- 41:13Speaker 1: We all thought it. They were trailing in that game.
- 41:15Speaker 1: The group text was flying. Lincoln Riley's going to be
- 41:18Speaker 1: let go after this loss. He ended up surviving because
- 41:22Speaker 1: that's all Lincoln Riley knows how to do.
- 41:25Speaker 4: It's the old Wayne Fonts, Chris Berman, Rasputin, surviving with
- 41:32Speaker 4: the line.
- 41:33Speaker 2: That game, as I was.
- 41:35Speaker 4: Watching the final and saw it unfold and just watching
- 41:38Speaker 4: USC play, it made me think back to the opinions
- 41:43Speaker 4: that we maybe had of Oregon moving forward. Like, okay,
- 41:46Speaker 4: that was a great win for Oregon. They got it
- 41:48Speaker 4: back on track. Maybe USC sucks. Maybe we shouldn't be
- 41:52Speaker 4: giving that much credence to Oregon for that win. Maybe
- 41:57Speaker 4: the game this week for Oregon against UCLA might have
- 42:00Speaker 4: a little bit better impact on them.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Do you boys know what Rasputin is known for historically? No.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Giant hog.
- 42:08Speaker 3: Look it up.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Really?
- 42:09Speaker 3: Historically. I'm talking one that echoes through the annals of history.
- 42:15Speaker 3: Notre Dame, 37. UNC, 26. Some are going to see
- 42:20Speaker 3: this final score. They're going to overly ding Notre Dame
- 42:22Speaker 3: for this. It was a sloppy game. Terrible conditions. I
- 42:25Speaker 3: think Notre Dame's fine. Pretty solid road win here for
- 42:28Speaker 3: the Irish.
- 42:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. Give them credit.
- 42:33Speaker 4: Again, sometimes you learn a little bit more when you
- 42:36Speaker 4: are challenged and you aren't expected to be challenged, but
- 42:38Speaker 4: The second half, they made plays.
- 42:42Speaker 2: In the running game. Carr made the necessary plays.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Give Carolina credit for hanging in there and getting in
- 42:47Speaker 4: with that kick return to really make it a game.
- 42:49Speaker 4: But Notre Dame is right where we expected them to be. Hey,
- 42:54Speaker 4: here's a good little annul of history parallel this week.
- 42:59Speaker 4: They're a massive favorite, like 37, 38-point favorite over Tavita
- 43:04Speaker 4: Pritchard and Stanford. And it's nearly 19 years to the
- 43:08Speaker 4: day when Tavita Pritchard, quarterback, led Stanford to that big
- 43:13Speaker 4: upset win over number two USC as a 40-point dog. So, hmm,
- 43:17Speaker 4: might history repeat itself.
- 43:18Speaker 1: I'm sure when Carolina hired— History's not going to repeat itself.
- 43:21Speaker 1: I'm sure when they hired Belichick, they were thinking, hey,
- 43:23Speaker 1: let's just hang around in these games. By the way, Mikey,
- 43:26Speaker 1: put it on the poll. If surviving was the name
- 43:29Speaker 1: of the game, would Lincoln Riley be the best coach
- 43:32Speaker 1: in college football history? Second question for you, Mikey. Did
- 43:36Speaker 1: you look it up?
- 43:38Speaker 2: I did, and I've gone down a rabbit hole. I
- 43:41Speaker 2: wish I did not go down. Told you.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Told you.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Milton Berger, huh? Probably doesn't even fit in that rabbit hole,
- 43:49Speaker 3: to be honest.
- 43:49Speaker 2: I mean.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Better not be a work internet provider. Better be a
- 43:53Speaker 4: personal IP address.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Shout out Rasputin.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Mad Monk.
- 44:00Speaker 2: All right.
- 44:01Speaker 3: I mean, not much else here. BYU beat TCU 17-10.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Ugly win.
- 44:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:07Speaker 3: I love Bear Bachmeier.
- 44:09Speaker 2: This is bad. Whatever.
- 44:11Speaker 3: BYU is just going to come down to the biggest games. Right.
- 44:13Speaker 3: What do they do against Notre Dame? What do they
- 44:14Speaker 3: do if they end up in that Big 12 championship?
- 44:17Speaker 2: Should Bear Bachmeier invite Rasputin over for dinner?
- 44:21Speaker 3: Knowing how they like to eat, I think I'd be wary.
- 44:24Speaker 1: You know? Not if he wants to be shamed, I mean.
- 44:29Speaker 2: And then finally, Indiana.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Jesus Christ, I just looked it up.
- 44:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I told you.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Allegedly have it preserved. Yes. Still, to this day, pickled. Mid-thigh,
- 44:43Speaker 2: we're talking?
- 44:43Speaker 1: Preserved where? I mean, what do you mean preserved?
- 44:46Speaker 3: I'm saying there is... His hog is preserved somewhere? They say, yes, allegedly.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Allegedly.
- 44:53Speaker 3: I mean, we might be talking like 13 here.
- 44:57Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 44:58Speaker 3: We might be talking the average yards per carry that
- 45:02Speaker 3: Jaden Ball had after that first 12-yard run. Maybe, actually,
- 45:08Speaker 3: he might average less than Rasputin if we're doing our
- 45:11Speaker 3: math correct here. All right. Indiana dominate Rutgers.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Good on Indiana.
- 45:15Speaker 1: They're fine.
- 45:15Speaker 2: They still look elite.
- 45:17Speaker 3: All right. All right. That'll do it, guys. Shout out, everybody.
- 45:20Speaker 3: Thank you. If you enjoyed the new show, rate, review,
- 45:21Speaker 3: and all that stuff. Glad to be a special guest
- 45:23Speaker 3: here every single week. This is the College Football Show
- 45:27Speaker 3: with Stu Gatz and the Bear. And we'll be back
- 45:29Speaker 3: to get you ready for the weekend later in a
- 45:32Speaker 3: couple of days.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Later, guys.
