Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Well, hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo Territory.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I am Mike di Giovanna, former RelA Times Baseball writer
- 0:14Speaker 1: and host of the show, joined by my regular co
- 0:16Speaker 1: host Mark Trumbo, the former Angels slugger. If you're wondering
- 0:20Speaker 1: what all these pine trees are in the background, I
- 0:23Speaker 1: am coming to you from Marietta, Georgia, where I'm visiting
- 0:26Speaker 1: my grandkids for the weekend. So we'll get right into
- 0:29Speaker 1: the action with the Angels. You know, for all their
- 0:33Speaker 1: shortcomings and struggles this year, and we've gone over it
- 0:36Speaker 1: a lot on this podcast, the one thing the Angel
- 0:39Speaker 1: seem to have an abundance of this season is resilience.
- 0:43Speaker 1: They've bounced back from some brutal losses this season, none
- 0:46Speaker 1: more devastating than Friday Night, when they blew a seven run,
- 0:50Speaker 1: sixth inning lead in Last City Athletics twelve eleven and
- 0:53Speaker 1: ten innings. But they shook that off with seven nothing
- 0:57Speaker 1: wins Saturday Night and a nine seven comeback win on
- 1:01Speaker 1: Sunday that featured Zach Neddo's tie breaking two run homer
- 1:05Speaker 1: in the top of the ninth. Neto actually struck out
- 1:08Speaker 1: twice Sunday, giving him an al leading one hundred and
- 1:12Speaker 1: twelve strikeouts on the season and putting him on pace
- 1:16Speaker 1: for two hundred and twenty nine strikeouts that would break
- 1:20Speaker 1: Mark Reynolds major League single season record of two hundred
- 1:23Speaker 1: and twenty three k's set in two.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Thousand and nine.
- 1:26Speaker 1: But Netto got a hold of an Elvis Alvarado ninety
- 1:28Speaker 1: seven miles per hour fastball and lined it over the
- 1:31Speaker 1: left field wall for a nine to seven lead on Sunday,
- 1:33Speaker 1: one inning after Denzer Guzman tied at seven to seven
- 1:37Speaker 1: with a three run homer, giving the rookie three homers
- 1:41Speaker 1: in three straight games. Mark, what'd you think of the
- 1:44Speaker 1: way the Angels bounce back this weekend?
- 1:48Speaker 3: Light that baby up using using the power and the
- 1:54Speaker 3: yellow rubber doll na appearance that is propelling the club
- 2:01Speaker 3: to come back a good win today against a Sacramento
- 2:06Speaker 3: Athletics team. There's the starting pitcher today for them. Numbers
- 2:12Speaker 3: were not great. It was a very lop sted matchup
- 2:15Speaker 3: from the start, but they hung in there pretty well. Fortunately,
- 2:19Speaker 3: Debt Mers, who didn't have his a stuff, was able
- 2:21Speaker 3: to give some length. I thought that this could be
- 2:24Speaker 3: one where he was out pretty early, but he did
- 2:27Speaker 3: hang in there gave his team a chance to win
- 2:29Speaker 3: and come back, and that they did.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Yeah, we've I mean, it does seem it seems like
- 2:36Speaker 1: a show doesn't go by this season where we haven't
- 2:39Speaker 1: criticized Zach Netto for something.
- 2:42Speaker 2: We've gotten on them pretty hard.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Obviously a huge hit today, but these strikeouts are still
- 2:48Speaker 1: an issue with him. How do you explain the fact
- 2:50Speaker 1: this kid's got seventeen homers. You know, his ops is
- 2:54Speaker 1: in the mid seven hundreds. He had a great year
- 2:57Speaker 1: last year. His defense has been a little spot this year,
- 3:00Speaker 1: but pretty good of late.
- 3:02Speaker 2: How do you explain all these strikeouts? Mark?
- 3:04Speaker 1: And is there anything he can do to cut down
- 3:06Speaker 1: on him? Because remember he's still a leadoff hitter for
- 3:08Speaker 1: this team.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Take today days start with Jack Perkins. He's a guy
- 3:15Speaker 3: that has a mid nineties fastball like the rest of them,
- 3:19Speaker 3: But he did look at the scouting reports like I
- 3:22Speaker 3: would assume most every team does. I'm assuming the Orioles
- 3:26Speaker 3: will coming up next, first pitch of the game, slider
- 3:30Speaker 3: outside of the strike zone, big swing. I'm surprised. I
- 3:34Speaker 3: guess they've hinted at on the broadcast a little bit,
- 3:37Speaker 3: but it's glaringly obvious. It's the first pitch of the ballgame.
- 3:42Speaker 3: The approach is to do exactly what he did there
- 3:45Speaker 3: at the end, and he went from having a game
- 3:48Speaker 3: that was relatively mundane, actually not very good with the bat,
- 3:52Speaker 3: to being the hero and you know, getting to do
- 3:56Speaker 3: the interviews and everything else. I think he's dead set
- 3:59Speaker 3: on putting forty in the seats. I don't think he
- 4:02Speaker 3: cares how he gets there. The batting average, I don't
- 4:05Speaker 3: feel like is important to him. And these are not critiques.
- 4:08Speaker 3: It's just quite obvious what it looks like.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah, another player who's really had a great series has
- 4:15Speaker 1: been hitting really well of late, as Donovan Walton hit
- 4:18Speaker 1: a three run homer in the second inning on Sunday,
- 4:21Speaker 1: his sixth straight game of an extra base hit. This guy,
- 4:24Speaker 1: they brought him up about a month ago. He's now
- 4:26Speaker 1: hitting three forty three with a nine to twenty seven OPS,
- 4:30Speaker 1: three homers, six doubles and eleven RBIs and twenty three games.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Remember they brought him up as a third baseman, but
- 4:36Speaker 1: it sure seems like Guzman has locked down that position
- 4:39Speaker 1: for now. Walton also plays second base, made a couple
- 4:43Speaker 1: of pretty good plays over the weekend. You have Peaza
- 4:46Speaker 1: and Grissom, who can play second base, trouts out with
- 4:49Speaker 1: a hamstring injury, so that you know there's more DH spots.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Is Donovan Walton just really muscling his way into this
- 4:56Speaker 1: lineup right now?
- 4:58Speaker 2: Look at those numbers.
- 5:01Speaker 3: If he keeps hitting like he's hitting, I don't think
- 5:03Speaker 3: you can Well, they don't have to play him against
- 5:06Speaker 3: left handed pitching, I guess, but yeah, probably more than
- 5:11Speaker 3: holding his own. Unfortunately, I think Vaughan Grissom, the bat's
- 5:14Speaker 3: going a bit cold. He was dealing with the injury.
- 5:17Speaker 3: He's kind of getting to be the odd man out.
- 5:20Speaker 3: I assume he'll platoon somewhat with Sean Awell at first base,
- 5:25Speaker 3: but there's a lot of guys for not a lot
- 5:28Speaker 3: of playing time. Now. Christian Moore seems to be they're
- 5:32Speaker 3: going to play him in the outfield. I know that
- 5:34Speaker 3: they were referencing Alex Gordon today and his transition, and
- 5:38Speaker 3: Alex Gordon played an excellent left field. I think he
- 5:43Speaker 3: had more aptitude for probably playing the outfield than the infield.
- 5:46Speaker 3: I played against him for a long time. I'm not
- 5:48Speaker 3: sure I quite see that with Christian Moore. Yet he
- 5:51Speaker 3: did get a hit to salvage it, but he has
- 5:54Speaker 3: been flailing at the same pitch as the leadoff hitter does,
- 5:57Speaker 3: and a lot of them, so you know, it's really
- 6:00Speaker 3: hard to judge the Salt Lake numbers. I've played there.
- 6:03Speaker 3: It was hit her friendly, but it's it's become absolutely goofy,
- 6:06Speaker 3: hit her friendly.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Now. I don't know what to.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Make of it, very distorted with Maybe it's just the
- 6:13Speaker 3: social media too. Looks like if you follow their page,
- 6:16Speaker 3: they hit six seven home runs a night and everyone's
- 6:19Speaker 3: got an ops a thousand or above. So I know
- 6:22Speaker 3: it's not reality, but you get very excited about these
- 6:25Speaker 3: guys and then sometimes when they come up there are
- 6:27Speaker 3: growing pains and I know the broadcaster today said Christian
- 6:32Speaker 3: Moore needs a long leash. Now it's one of the
- 6:35Speaker 3: first times I've really heard, you know, someone leaning into that.
- 6:38Speaker 3: You know, a player in particular, first rounder, counting on
- 6:41Speaker 3: them for a lot, and you're playing them out of position,
- 6:44Speaker 3: so a little bit interesting or a lot interesting. I
- 6:49Speaker 3: guess there's a plan there, and maybe it's they seem
- 6:51Speaker 3: as the future left fielder.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Well, looking at that play, I think it was Friday
- 6:55Speaker 1: night in the first inning when he turned Nick Kurtz.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It should have been a fly ball out into a double.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I think there is a Thursday night. I'm mixing up
- 7:05Speaker 1: my nights here, but it started a five run inning.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Uh yeah, he looks a little rough out there in
- 7:10Speaker 1: left field. I think he caught routine her. Yeah, that
- 7:14Speaker 1: same game he over ran one and was charged with
- 7:16Speaker 1: an error. So there's two players in.
- 7:18Speaker 3: One game, and it looks like there's gonna Adam Eaton's
- 7:22Speaker 3: gonna need to be doing a lot of work with
- 7:24Speaker 3: him out there to for He was out of position,
- 7:26Speaker 3: which I think the broadcasters mentioned too late in the
- 7:28Speaker 3: game today, very deep in a situation where he should
- 7:32Speaker 3: have been more shallow, ready to try and throw the
- 7:35Speaker 3: runner out at the plate, and he was, I guess,
- 7:39Speaker 3: going off the I don't know what he was going
- 7:41Speaker 3: off with, maybe the card in the back pocket or
- 7:42Speaker 3: the burnt spot in the outfield from where everyone stands
- 7:45Speaker 3: in normal depth, which is deep in that ballpark with
- 7:48Speaker 3: the way it flies.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Well good uh More actually made some pretty nice defensive
- 7:53Speaker 1: plays at second base today, which as we know, is
- 7:55Speaker 1: his natural position. What are we you moved from the
- 7:59Speaker 1: infield the outfield. I know it wasn't easy for you,
- 8:03Speaker 1: is there a little bit of a danger and maybe
- 8:05Speaker 1: exposing this kid to a position that you know, a
- 8:07Speaker 1: lot of people think left field or will hide the
- 8:09Speaker 1: guy there, will hide our worse endfielder there, or whatever.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It's not that difficult of a transition, but as you know,
- 8:16Speaker 1: it's not easy. Is this kind of a risking this
- 8:21Speaker 1: kid and his confidence to stick him out in left
- 8:23Speaker 1: field even on a regular basis when he's just really
- 8:27Speaker 1: not you know, has very little experience.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Of the position.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Potentially, I think that it creates a lot of stress
- 8:35Speaker 3: for the player individually moving around day to day. Some
- 8:39Speaker 3: guys are really gifted in that regard and can pretty seamlessly,
- 8:45Speaker 3: you can put them anywhere and it doesn't affect their hitting.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Some other guys that creates a lot more stress because
- 8:52Speaker 3: they know that there's a potential for well embarrassment in
- 8:57Speaker 3: some cases, and that can really affect the guy's mental
- 9:01Speaker 3: performance and you know, ends up the statistics stuff or
- 9:04Speaker 3: because of it. So you got to gauge. It's an
- 9:06Speaker 3: individual thing. It's no one size fits all, and I
- 9:09Speaker 3: guess it's kind of to be determined in this case
- 9:12Speaker 3: with Christian.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Moore, Yeah, he does seem to have a sense of
- 9:16Speaker 1: humor about it. I think he had caught a routine
- 9:18Speaker 1: fly ball in the eighth.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Or ninth inning today.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I think it was a ninth and you know, gave
- 9:23Speaker 1: a smile and a thumbs up, so I'll give him
- 9:25Speaker 1: credit for that. I'm not crazy about the move, you know.
- 9:29Speaker 1: It just seems like and we saw his first inting
- 9:31Speaker 1: out there. I mean, when you're playing out a position
- 9:35Speaker 1: and you have so little experience, the ball just will
- 9:37Speaker 1: find a way. And sure enough, Nick Kurtz his hits
- 9:40Speaker 1: a fly ball, he gets turned around on it and
- 9:43Speaker 1: turns it into a double. Let's take a quick break
- 9:45Speaker 1: for a word from our sponsors, and we'll be right

- 10:55Speaker 1: Mike Dgivona. Well, before we get back into more of
- 10:59Speaker 1: the weekends series against the Athletics, let's go to a
- 11:03Speaker 1: quick report that we got over the weekend from Bob
- 11:07Speaker 1: Nightingale off USA Today, who rights the Angels plan to
- 11:13Speaker 1: retain their key players at the deadline.
- 11:15Speaker 2: With owner Arto Moreno not wanting.
- 11:17Speaker 1: To unload starters read Detmers and Jose Soriano or outfielder
- 11:20Speaker 1: Chill at Dell Detmer's and Sriano a under team control
- 11:24Speaker 1: through twenty twenty eight, while a Dell is eligible for
- 11:27Speaker 1: free agency after the twenty twenty seventh season. The Angels
- 11:30Speaker 1: could change their mind, of course, and package Debtmers into
- 11:33Speaker 1: a deal that would, you know, be pretty attractive. As
- 11:36Speaker 1: Bob writes, But I don't know Mark. I saw this,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and I know Bob. I worked with him for many years,
- 11:41Speaker 1: and he seems to write things this time of year
- 11:44Speaker 1: that are more sound, more definitive than they actually are.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I think a lot of things can change between now
- 11:50Speaker 1: and you know. I guess August third is a trade
- 11:54Speaker 1: deadline this year.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Kind of weird.
- 11:56Speaker 1: But did this one kind of catch you a little
- 11:58Speaker 1: by surprise? Bob's in the No, Bob, Bob's connected. The
- 12:04Speaker 1: way it was written, it seemed, yes, like you said,
- 12:07Speaker 1: very definitive. This was a hard no, no, thank you not.
- 12:12Speaker 1: You know, we're not not looking to trade these guys,
- 12:14Speaker 1: We're not. Don't bother calling. That's probably not the reality.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I think that they will at least answer the phone,
- 12:21Speaker 1: or should, but there may be no appetite for doing anything.
- 12:26Speaker 1: So if that's the case, I guess you would assume
- 12:30Speaker 1: that I mean, I said it in jest, but there's
- 12:33Speaker 1: no reason that they might not look to add And
- 12:36Speaker 1: the Chapman I was referring to for the Reddit users
- 12:39Speaker 1: was a rolled As Chapman, not Matt Chapman. Yeah, Matt
- 12:43Speaker 1: Chapman wouldn't be bad either, right, expensive Yeah, And you
- 12:48Speaker 1: wouldn't at this point to want to want to block
- 12:51Speaker 1: dancer Gulzman Guzman from playing every day.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about the picture before we talk about
- 13:00Speaker 1: Saturday night's pitcher. One last thought on Sunday's game, and
- 13:05Speaker 1: speaking of resilience, th ree Debtmers really rough first inning
- 13:09Speaker 1: for he walked three, give up four runs. I think
- 13:11Speaker 1: he walked three batters total in thirty three innings of
- 13:14Speaker 1: his previous five starts. Had a one point three suping
- 13:17Speaker 1: Mera in those games is really dominant. Really struggled, but
- 13:21Speaker 1: he ends up going six innings, allowing one more run,
- 13:24Speaker 1: and he did keep the Angels in the game.
- 13:26Speaker 2: What did you think of Detmers today?
- 13:30Speaker 3: Gutsy performance from the outset. It could have really really spiraled.
- 13:34Speaker 3: It wasn't his best game by any means, but it
- 13:37Speaker 3: was one in the past that he probably actually would
- 13:39Speaker 3: have would you got knocked out maybe three and a
- 13:42Speaker 3: third something like that could have been sixty seven runs,
- 13:46Speaker 3: So that showed that he has taken a step in
- 13:48Speaker 3: the right direction. He seemed to be pulling his fastball
- 13:51Speaker 3: a bit. The slider. I'm sure it's not going to
- 13:54Speaker 3: grade out anywhere near as good as it has in
- 13:56Speaker 3: recent history.
- 13:57Speaker 2: And I didn't see too many of the.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Bigger over an chor balls really landing, So I'd say
- 14:02Speaker 3: he probably had his d stuff today, if you want
- 14:05Speaker 3: to grate it in those terms. But he has matured
- 14:09Speaker 3: enough and has enough experience that he, you know, kind
- 14:12Speaker 3: of remained calm under fire, got the outset he needed
- 14:16Speaker 3: to know, real big mistakes, and the Angels, you know,
- 14:19Speaker 3: came back and won this ball game.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Yeah, let's talk about Saturday night Walbert Urania again. Interesting
- 14:27Speaker 1: start to this game. Before first pitch home played, umpire
- 14:31Speaker 1: Dan Blino asks Urania to remove his Dominican Republic headband,
- 14:36Speaker 1: which I guess it had a bit of wite on it,
- 14:39Speaker 1: showing felt it was going to be a distraction to
- 14:42Speaker 1: the batters.
- 14:44Speaker 2: It sort of.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Shook him and seemed to phase him a little bit.
- 14:47Speaker 1: The he's loaded the bases, but he got out of
- 14:49Speaker 1: that jam and ends up throwing five scoreless innings, gives
- 14:52Speaker 1: up four hits first start with zero walks, which is
- 14:56Speaker 1: a real improvement for him, six strikeouts. This kid, in
- 15:00Speaker 1: his last ten games has a one point nine to
- 15:02Speaker 1: three ERA, and he has gone five innings or more
- 15:06Speaker 1: and allowed three earned runs or less in ten straight games. Now,
- 15:11Speaker 1: that's the longest such such streak since Ron Romantic, and
- 15:15Speaker 1: I remember Ron back in nineteen eighty four, he won
- 15:18Speaker 1: ten games with five innings or more and three ear
- 15:22Speaker 1: runs or less. So, you know, I'm not sure who
- 15:25Speaker 1: the ace of this team is, whether it's det Meers
- 15:28Speaker 1: or Urania, but this kid just continues to impress. He's
- 15:32Speaker 1: twenty two years old, and God, where are the Angels
- 15:36Speaker 1: be without this guy?
- 15:37Speaker 2: Right now?
- 15:40Speaker 3: I think they'd be worse off. Yeah, I think that
- 15:43Speaker 3: there's a mosquito on your forehead.
- 15:45Speaker 2: I am in Georgia.
- 15:47Speaker 3: We're looking out for everyone's health and wellness. I think
- 15:50Speaker 3: that Urania. Yeah, he's been a huge boost. He's a
- 15:55Speaker 3: guy that you expect to win when he's out there.
- 15:57Speaker 3: I don't know how you cannot kind of take that minds.
- 16:00Speaker 3: He's kind of mowing through these these lineups, good lineups,
- 16:04Speaker 3: bad lineups, it doesn't matter. I don't It's like he's
- 16:07Speaker 3: indifferent to who's up there as well, which is very
- 16:11Speaker 3: very rare, and I really do mean that. I don't
- 16:13Speaker 3: think he gives if it's Nick Kurtz or you know,
- 16:17Speaker 3: Joe nobody, He's going to come at him with the
- 16:19Speaker 3: same stuff. He trusts his stuff. He did throw more
- 16:22Speaker 3: change ups this last outing less sliders in his fastball
- 16:27Speaker 3: as sinker actually wasn't quite as good as it normally is,
- 16:29Speaker 3: but his changeup was better a lot more to left
- 16:31Speaker 3: handed hitters, so, you know, another another solid performance. There's
- 16:36Speaker 3: really no reason to think he's going to slow down.
- 16:38Speaker 3: I do think this is sustainable to a degree. That's
- 16:42Speaker 3: similar Ishue.
- 16:43Speaker 1: What I love about this kid, and the reason I
- 16:46Speaker 1: agree that it's sustainable is he throws ninety nine touches
- 16:49Speaker 1: one hundred. A lot of young guys would fall in
- 16:52Speaker 1: love with a fastball like that, But he pitches he
- 16:55Speaker 1: he has. You know, the sweeper is still a work
- 16:58Speaker 1: in progress, but he's made some movements on it. His
- 17:01Speaker 1: change up is an outstanding pitch, and you know he's
- 17:05Speaker 1: got the four seemer. He doesn't use it that much.
- 17:07Speaker 1: But that's for pretty you know, three plus pitches if
- 17:11Speaker 1: he can locate the four seemer, the sinker and the changeup.
- 17:15Speaker 1: He threw a sinker, I think to Max Munsey the
- 17:19Speaker 1: other on Saturday night, the thing looked like it started
- 17:22Speaker 1: out in the middle of the plate and by the
- 17:23Speaker 1: time Wilson swung through it and almost hit him. So
- 17:26Speaker 1: the movement on that pitch is pretty pretty extreme. So yeah,
- 17:31Speaker 1: I think this kid is uh, he's here for today,
- 17:34Speaker 1: here to stay. It's just so ironic. Nobody had this
- 17:37Speaker 1: kid pegged in the Angel's rotation. We mentioned him briefly
- 17:40Speaker 1: in spring training about you know, his stuff plus metric
- 17:44Speaker 1: was a little eye popping at the time. But you know,
- 17:49Speaker 1: as Joe Madden would say, bully on him and bully
- 17:52Speaker 1: on the Angels for sticking with his kid, giving him
- 17:55Speaker 1: a chance. And he's proved more so, he's proved that
- 17:57Speaker 1: he's ready, definitely, So let's get for the painful, painful
- 18:03Speaker 1: part of the weekend. Friday Night, the Angels built an
- 18:06Speaker 1: eleven four lead in the sixth inning on the strength
- 18:09Speaker 1: of Guzman's two run homer, Jose Serie with a three
- 18:12Speaker 1: run shot, Nedo with a solo homer, Logan hop O
- 18:16Speaker 1: Hoppy with a three run homer, and then it.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Just all fell apart from there.
- 18:20Speaker 1: The A's rallied with Zach you off broken bat RBI
- 18:24Speaker 1: single on the sixth. Jacob Wilson hit a two run
- 18:28Speaker 1: homer in the seventh off Mitch Ferris that made it
- 18:30Speaker 1: eleven to seven once he reared. The two run homer
- 18:33Speaker 1: off sil Seth and the eighth made it eleven nine,
- 18:36Speaker 1: and Jonah him with a pinch hit two run homer
- 18:39Speaker 1: off Sam Bachmann, just a ninety nine mile an hour
- 18:43Speaker 1: sinker that just seemed to tail right into Jonah's barrel
- 18:47Speaker 1: and he squared it up for an eleven eleven tie.
- 18:51Speaker 1: The Angels still had a chance, of course, in extra innings.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Christian Moore got the third.
- 18:57Speaker 2: With one out.
- 18:57Speaker 1: O'happy hits a chopper and it just what did you
- 19:01Speaker 1: see on that play, Mark is It just didn't seem
- 19:03Speaker 1: like more got much of a secondary lead or a
- 19:05Speaker 1: very good jump and he ends up getting thrown out
- 19:07Speaker 1: at home and then Samon to Tara Walks Nick Kurtz
- 19:11Speaker 1: for the winning run in the bottom of the tenth.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Was that was he a little flat footed on that
- 19:17Speaker 1: play at third.
- 19:19Speaker 2: I think he was.
- 19:20Speaker 3: It seemed like the jump wasn't great. There may have
- 19:24Speaker 3: been some element of a little bit shorter lead to
- 19:27Speaker 3: begin with and not get doubled up on online drive,
- 19:30Speaker 3: but it wasn't enough to allow him to get home safely.
- 19:34Speaker 3: And if it's the contact play that I was used
- 19:36Speaker 3: to and that we ran, it was, I mean, you
- 19:38Speaker 3: were extremely aggressive with it with your secondary lead and
- 19:42Speaker 3: immediately almost you know it was really you were the
- 19:46Speaker 3: judging part of it was on the swing, so there
- 19:49Speaker 3: was a chance that you could get back picked if
- 19:52Speaker 3: done correctly, if the guy were to whiff. But the
- 19:54Speaker 3: intention there is once you know, if the ball is hit,
- 19:56Speaker 3: especially on the ground, you were scoring. In this instance,
- 19:59Speaker 3: it did really materialize that way. And look at the
- 20:03Speaker 3: Sacramento a I mean that there they have a high
- 20:05Speaker 3: powered offense, they play nice defense, and you just they're
- 20:10Speaker 3: pitching is just so bad that it really drags them down.
- 20:14Speaker 3: And I guess you could say the same about the
- 20:16Speaker 3: Angels at times, but I think the A's have more guys. Well,
- 20:20Speaker 3: the Angel small ball is more similar, But like yell
- 20:24Speaker 3: Off and and Wilson and some of these guys, I
- 20:26Speaker 3: mean they can they can hit. They put a lot
- 20:28Speaker 3: of pressure on you. They take nice at bats. McNeil
- 20:32Speaker 3: and Kurtz that he finally got into one. He had
- 20:34Speaker 3: had kind of a poor series, uh you know for
- 20:38Speaker 3: the most part, a couple of walks, a big walk
- 20:40Speaker 3: to walk off walk. But he finally got into one.
- 20:44Speaker 3: So it was a two similarsh teams going head to head.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Yeah, they really bottled up. The Angels did a good
- 20:49Speaker 1: job bottling up Kurts for most of the week until
- 20:51Speaker 1: he almost put a hole on the batter's side with
- 20:54Speaker 1: that homer.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Today.
- 20:56Speaker 1: All right, we're gonna take another break for words from
- 20:58Speaker 1: our sponsors. We'll be right back with more Halo territory.

- 21:16Speaker 3: can't buy one. You couldn't hit water if you fell.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Out of a boat. I'm taking it this week.
- 21:22Speaker 3: My pick for the Daily Dingers is Angels catcher Logan
- 21:26Speaker 3: o'hapi And the last week or so looks like he's
- 21:29Speaker 3: going to a looser grip on the bat, allowing his
- 21:32Speaker 3: swing to be short and direct to that baseball, and
- 21:35Speaker 3: I think he's going yard against the Baltimore Orioles this series.
- 21:39Speaker 1: I like the pick, even though you've compared me to
- 21:42Speaker 1: Kirk Bovakua, but I appreciate it.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Good good historical reference there, Mark.

- 22:37Speaker 1: Welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo and Mike Dgivano.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Let's quick go over Thursday Night's game real quick. Ryan
- 22:45Speaker 1: Johnson called up again, is it five runs in the
- 22:49Speaker 1: first inning? And as we said, that inning did start
- 22:52Speaker 1: with that misplay by Christian Moore in left field. Langlers
- 22:57Speaker 1: follows out with a three run homer, so to Strim
- 22:59Speaker 1: with a solo shot, and the Angels couldn't mount any
- 23:03Speaker 1: kind of offense against A's left hander Gauge Jump, who
- 23:07Speaker 1: through seven shutout innings. But you know, to Ryan Johnson's credit,
- 23:11Speaker 1: he did throw another four scoreless innings. Mark, I'm not
- 23:16Speaker 1: sure what the Angels are going to do with that
- 23:17Speaker 1: spot in the rotation. Would you give Ryan Johnson another start?
- 23:22Speaker 1: Did he earn another start with the way he bounced
- 23:24Speaker 1: back from that first inning?
- 23:26Speaker 3: Didn't you mention Gage Jump in our Ale West preview?
- 23:29Speaker 3: I believe that was you, Mark, all Right, I don't
- 23:33Speaker 3: know what they're going to do.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I don't know what they're going to do. I think.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Ryan Johnson has a lot of promise at at times,
- 23:41Speaker 3: and he was able to settle down. He's unfortunately it
- 23:45Speaker 3: has been innings like that that get away from him
- 23:50Speaker 3: and are too big to overcome. I think that again,
- 23:54Speaker 3: I mean he's I guess they're committed to having him
- 23:57Speaker 3: as a starter. My personal opinion is, I guess it
- 24:01Speaker 3: does make some sense to give it a shot. But
- 24:04Speaker 3: as far as you know his career trajectory, Double A,
- 24:08Speaker 3: Big leagues, bouncing around a lot. I'm not sure how
- 24:13Speaker 3: they view the system any longer. We've covered it before,
- 24:17Speaker 3: but it seems like you're just as liable to get
- 24:19Speaker 3: called up from Double A as you are from Triple A.
- 24:22Speaker 3: And the minor leagues themselves could be undergoing, you know,
- 24:25Speaker 3: more reshuffling with some of these proposals wiping out the
- 24:29Speaker 3: high school draft. We can cover some of those things
- 24:31Speaker 3: that are you know, the CBA. We haven't leaned into
- 24:34Speaker 3: it yet, but there's a lot to unpack and we
- 24:36Speaker 3: will try at some point. But Ryan Johnson I think
- 24:39Speaker 3: would be the guy I would I would pick. Caden
- 24:42Speaker 3: Dana is injured again, I believe got hit by a comebacker.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Alde Garry. I don't know, still working on it and
- 24:52Speaker 3: class and I hope for But you look down at
- 24:56Speaker 3: the numbers and the e RA either starts with a
- 24:58Speaker 3: six or seven.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Hard to say it.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, before the series even started up in West Sacramento,
- 25:06Speaker 1: Angels got some bad news when Mike Trout was placed
- 25:08Speaker 1: on the injured list because of a right hamstring strain.
- 25:13Speaker 1: He doesn't think it's serious, which is great, but he
- 25:16Speaker 1: did raise some questions.
- 25:18Speaker 2: With when and how he was hurt.
- 25:20Speaker 1: The Angels were leading eight to one against Arizona in
- 25:23Speaker 1: Arizona on Wednesday, and he's still in the game in
- 25:26Speaker 1: the eighth inning. I believe when he's trying to leg
- 25:28Speaker 1: out a hit and ends up hurting himself. And here's
- 25:31Speaker 1: what Kurt Suzuki had to say about that. That's how
- 25:34Speaker 1: Mike is wired. Would I want to have him throttled
- 25:37Speaker 1: it down? Of course I would in hindsight. But at
- 25:40Speaker 1: the same time, that's what makes Mike Mike. He plays
- 25:43Speaker 1: the game hard, he sets the example for everybody, and
- 25:46Speaker 1: he's a good role model.
- 25:48Speaker 2: For the youth out there.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Well, we haven't agreed with a lot of what Kurt
- 25:54Speaker 1: Zzuki has said this year. I'm not sure I had
- 25:57Speaker 1: as big a problem as some people did with him
- 25:59Speaker 1: remain in that game. The fact that Trout, you know
- 26:03Speaker 1: you're not going to get him to not hustles, just
- 26:05Speaker 1: not in his DNA. We've talked about how it should
- 26:08Speaker 1: be rubbing off on more young players, except especially a
- 26:13Speaker 1: young shortstop we've mentioned often on the show, Mark, would
- 26:17Speaker 1: you think about, you know, Mike, Mike Trout in the
- 26:20Speaker 1: way he's been used, And it should also be noted,
- 26:22Speaker 1: I think he's played in one hundred No. Seventy four
- 26:26Speaker 1: the team's first seventy five games, sixty three starts in center,
- 26:30Speaker 1: eleven at DH, so he basically only there was only
- 26:34Speaker 1: one game that he didn't play in. What do you think, Mark,
- 26:38Speaker 1: Could they have rested this kid because kid he's thirty five?
- 26:41Speaker 1: Could they rested Trout a little or paced them a
- 26:43Speaker 1: little better this year?
- 26:46Speaker 3: I think there's two different opinions. I really don't want
- 26:48Speaker 3: to get cross or caught in the crossfire.
- 26:51Speaker 2: It's too bad.
- 26:52Speaker 3: I know the broadcast kind of a strong monologue the
- 26:56Speaker 3: other night in defense of and I don't have anything
- 27:03Speaker 3: to say against that the reality. And I guess it
- 27:06Speaker 3: was eight to one facing Rodriguez, one of the better
- 27:09Speaker 3: pitchers in baseball. The whole bench was available at that point.
- 27:15Speaker 3: I believe what was it the fifth sixth inning that
- 27:19Speaker 3: that occurred, or maybe even a little later. Okay, so
- 27:24Speaker 3: let's says it's later the seventh inning or whatever. I
- 27:27Speaker 3: reasonably you could say that hindsight is what it is. Unfortunate.
- 27:32Speaker 3: I think it's it's relatively minor. I know that he
- 27:36Speaker 3: at least was also Bob Nightingale. I don't know about
- 27:39Speaker 3: the home Run Derby speculation where Mike suggested he has
- 27:44Speaker 3: some openness opening it.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Whatever the word is, he's willing.
- 27:48Speaker 3: To possibly consider doing it, and that's a first. He's
- 27:54Speaker 3: always had no interest in it, but playing in front
- 27:57Speaker 3: of the hometown crowd, maybe he might reconsider, which to
- 28:00Speaker 3: me means that he's probably feeling pretty good relatively minor
- 28:05Speaker 3: injury or very minor injury. Hopefully it takes the minimum
- 28:08Speaker 3: ten to fourteen days and he's back out there playing
- 28:11Speaker 3: every day in center field and maybe hitting in the
- 28:13Speaker 3: home run Derby.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Yeah, Bob said he would be willing to consider it.
- 28:17Speaker 1: The Home Run Derby has always been sort of a
- 28:19Speaker 1: running joke amongly Riders. It's like, you know that stretching
- 28:24Speaker 1: what was it, eight nine? I forget how many he
- 28:26Speaker 1: was in the All Star Game every year, and every
- 28:28Speaker 1: time we approach him about the derby, he's like, oh, man,
- 28:31Speaker 1: I don't want to ruin my swing. I don't want
- 28:33Speaker 1: to mess up my swing. And back then he was
- 28:34Speaker 1: winning MVP Awards and he probably didn't want to mess
- 28:37Speaker 1: up his swing. Now he's Mark Georgian. The end of it, Yeah,
- 28:40Speaker 1: the end of the career games in Philly, which is,
- 28:44Speaker 1: you know, forty five minutes north of Millville, New Jersey
- 28:47Speaker 1: home with a Millville media or Mike Trout. That would
- 28:51Speaker 1: be a pretty huge get for the All Star Game.
- 28:54Speaker 1: And I think, you know Trout, how do you realistically
- 28:57Speaker 1: he may not make too many more All Star Games.
- 28:59Speaker 1: This could be his last chance. He has always maintained
- 29:02Speaker 1: that he will do it once. I think this is
- 29:04Speaker 1: the year he does it. But you know he has
- 29:07Speaker 1: been very prone to injury over the last five years. Mark,
- 29:10Speaker 1: you did that? Did you do it once?
- 29:11Speaker 2: Or twice? I can't remember twice? Twice? Sorry? Man, you
- 29:15Speaker 2: know I'm getting old.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Takes a toll on your body, even you know, all
- 29:22Speaker 1: your entire body. I do think the new format this
- 29:25Speaker 1: year where they are limiting swings, may cut down on
- 29:28Speaker 1: the wear and tear. But what do you think if
- 29:30Speaker 1: Trout's still going good at the break, would you think
- 29:32Speaker 1: it's a good idea for him to participate in the Derby.
- 29:36Speaker 2: It's a hard one.
- 29:37Speaker 3: I've did both formats and I can say, the more
- 29:41Speaker 3: recent one with the clock was significantly harder. Good riddance.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Not a heck of a lot of work for what really,
- 29:51Speaker 3: I guess it's for the fans. I think the Homer
- 29:54Speaker 3: Derby itself's gotten a little long in the tooth, and
- 29:57Speaker 3: maybe people have been saying that for a long time
- 30:00Speaker 3: him now decades. But it's something that is going to
- 30:04Speaker 3: take place, And if Mike did say that he'd like
- 30:06Speaker 3: to do it once and experience what it's like, I
- 30:09Speaker 3: think that what better.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Time than now. He's one interesting thing.
- 30:14Speaker 3: He's not a guy that hits on the field a ton,
- 30:17Speaker 3: I don't believe, and a lot of guys don't, so
- 30:21Speaker 3: maybe that matters very little. But I can only speak
- 30:25Speaker 3: for myself. I hit VP on the field as often
- 30:28Speaker 3: as humanly possible, and so I felt like it was,
- 30:32Speaker 3: you know, very similar to what I was always doing.
- 30:36Speaker 3: If you're used to not preparing that way, it could
- 30:38Speaker 3: be a little bit different. But I know the fans
- 30:40Speaker 3: would go nuts if he chose to. I think he'd
- 30:42Speaker 3: put on a show. But if the health is somewhat
- 30:46Speaker 3: in question, you know, I think he should take care
- 30:49Speaker 3: of his body first.
- 30:50Speaker 1: I'm going to close a show with a note that
- 30:53Speaker 1: was buried at the end of a Angels report. I think
- 30:56Speaker 1: it was Friday or Saturday, and the Orange County Redshow
- 30:59Speaker 1: was written by a freelancer because the paper did not
- 31:02Speaker 1: send Jeff Fletcher on this trip and it was involving
- 31:06Speaker 1: our favorite third baseman on Mankata. Kurt Suzuki was unsure
- 31:11Speaker 1: a third baseman on Mankata, who has knee inflammation, had
- 31:15Speaker 1: undergone his surgery yet. But that is still the plan, marn't.
- 31:20Speaker 1: This guy was put on the injury list a month
- 31:23Speaker 1: ago and they said probably about three at least three
- 31:26Speaker 1: weeks ago that he was gonna have to have surgery.
- 31:29Speaker 1: I don't know if you know Kurt's just playing possum
- 31:33Speaker 1: in this situation or what, But to me, this is
- 31:35Speaker 1: starting to look like one of those Anthony Rendoin situations
- 31:38Speaker 1: where I remember we were always asking, you know, he
- 31:40Speaker 1: had all these hip injuries and all these injuries. You know,
- 31:42Speaker 1: has he started a rehab? Is he coming back? Well,
- 31:45Speaker 1: we're not sure. We're not sure, And you know, at
- 31:48Speaker 1: some point you just realize Anthony Rendon is never playing
- 31:51Speaker 1: for this team again. I personally think Eon Mankata has
- 31:54Speaker 1: played his last game for the Angels, Yet they still
- 31:56Speaker 1: gave him four million this year, not a huge chunk
- 31:59Speaker 1: of money, but predy big chunk of change. I think
- 32:02Speaker 1: we've seen the last of them. Is that what you're
- 32:04Speaker 1: sort of reading between the lions here?
- 32:05Speaker 2: Mark? Yeah, that smurt tells it all.
- 32:11Speaker 3: I don't. Well, here's the thing. Jorge is nearing a rehab,
- 32:15Speaker 3: start to rehab apparent. Yeah, where is his what is
- 32:19Speaker 3: his role on this team? Where do you see him?
- 32:21Speaker 3: I mean players that are producing, you have young players,
- 32:24Speaker 3: it seems like they're going that route, going to play
- 32:28Speaker 3: the young guys. And neither of those two were young.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Neither have been terribly productive. They don't play the brand
- 32:35Speaker 3: of baseball that the team is leaning into. I think
- 32:38Speaker 3: that as far as Moncatta goes, I it's unfortunate we
- 32:43Speaker 3: didn't know he was playing hurt all along. It appears
- 32:47Speaker 3: that he came into camp probably with the same injury
- 32:49Speaker 3: had last year.
- 32:51Speaker 2: The team.
- 32:51Speaker 3: I mean, he played for this team last year, So
- 32:54Speaker 3: if anybody knew about it and knew the severity of
- 32:56Speaker 3: what he was dealing with, it was this team. And
- 32:58Speaker 3: they signed him for formula dollars and as someone who's
- 33:03Speaker 3: undergone multiple knee surgeries. It's a drag and I wish
- 33:08Speaker 3: him well. You know, it's the kind of thing that people,
- 33:11Speaker 3: you know, it's quick to criticize, but he's going to
- 33:13Speaker 3: have a lot of years post playing and there's a
- 33:16Speaker 3: lot of wear and tear on the body, so anything
- 33:18Speaker 3: like this, I, you know, I really do wish everyone well.
- 33:22Speaker 3: I hope that he's able to make a full recovery.
- 33:25Speaker 3: He probably won't be playing much ball for the Angels
- 33:27Speaker 3: any longer, but he might still have some good years
- 33:30Speaker 3: left in him elsewhere or maybe here. I don't know,
- 33:34Speaker 3: but yeah, I don't see a place for him on
- 33:37Speaker 3: this team. One last thing about Sunday's game. They had
- 33:42Speaker 3: Nick Kurtz came up earlier with a base open. They
- 33:45Speaker 3: chose to pitch to him. He smashed the ball into
- 33:47Speaker 3: right field for an RBI, and it seemed like they
- 33:50Speaker 3: were kind of saying, why in the world with a
- 33:53Speaker 3: bass opener, you pitching to this guy? And then the
- 33:55Speaker 3: camera panned to Kurt Suzuki. Do you think he got
- 33:58Speaker 3: caught with his pants down there?
- 33:59Speaker 1: And man, I hope not for Kurt's sake. I do
- 34:05Speaker 1: think they handled They got a lot of fastballs by Kurtz.
- 34:09Speaker 1: This series a little surprising, and I think Urania struck
- 34:15Speaker 1: him out with a really nice changeup.
- 34:17Speaker 2: On Saturday Night.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Maybe there was a little bit of confidence, maybe a
- 34:20Speaker 1: borderline cockiness, But Nick Kurtz, as we saw it, was
- 34:24Speaker 1: the seventh or eighth and then he just demolished that
- 34:26Speaker 1: baseball from Suitor. I think he hit about four thirty
- 34:29Speaker 1: four forty. Yeah, you don't want to push your luck
- 34:32Speaker 1: with Nick Kurtz.
- 34:33Speaker 2: I mean, the.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Play is right there in front of him. I can't
- 34:36Speaker 1: see how kurt would get caught with his pants down.
- 34:38Speaker 1: I just think they felt like, you know, we've we've
- 34:41Speaker 1: handled this guy pretty well.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Let's push our luck.
- 34:44Speaker 3: And I think Kurtz is a promising looking player.
- 34:46Speaker 2: I think.
