- 0:00It's amazing that you didn't notice that really until after. It's so, you
- 0:04know, I think it's really well, speak for yourself. I was fag
- 0:08attention. I know, well, you're you're you know you're a nerd.
- 0:12No, I know you can say a nerd. Hello man, Welcome to
- 0:22May the review be with you with Nick and Joe. I'm Joe, I'm
- 0:27Nick, and today we are reviewing season two of House of the Dragon.
- 0:33The first episode of season two A sun for a sun, A lot to
- 0:39talk about today, And let me go ahead Nick and just say I think
- 0:44I felt this way during season one, but I don't care. I'm gonna
- 0:48say it again. Uh. It feels so good to have a Song of
- 0:53Ice and Fire story on Sunday nights. I can't explain it. There's just
- 0:57something really nice about it. Undercent agree. It's just such a cool story
- 1:03and world, and it's just it's a proper show. It's a proper TV
- 1:08show. It's got great writing, fantastic act acting all the way through.
- 1:15Doesn't disappoint very It's very rare that a story from the Song of Ice and
- 1:19Fire disappoints, and this this first episode, I was right in line with
- 1:23that it was a great pilot or not pilot, but a great opener for
- 1:27this season two. So I'm excited to get into it. Yeah, no,
- 1:30it really was there. There were so many welcome things getting into this
- 1:36episode. In particular, I'm a big Matt Smith fan, and watching Matt
- 1:41Smith be Damon Targarian is such a treat. He's so conniving and yeah,
- 1:47just just a ruthless guy. And of course that is going to lead to
- 1:51some problems this episode, this season, and ultimately this story, but we'll
- 1:57get into that. Nick, your first impressions this show When this episode ended,
- 2:06I was my thought was this freaking world, man, this freaking world,
- 2:10this freaking story, It just it just has a way of shocking you.
- 2:19And then also saying I should have known that this was gonna happen,
- 2:23but also just still being ridiculously shocked at how it comes to be. That
- 2:30that was my initial reaction, like just disbelief, uh, and how this
- 2:36how this show operates, and how how this western oas of the world operates
- 2:40Like, oh, just totally crazy, just totally crazy somebody. Yeah,
- 2:46like, uh, I think it does go to like the the popcorn ness,
- 2:53Uh that you were kind of vibing at at the beginning, right,
- 2:55like, there's just kind of a spectacle to this show where you do have
- 3:00some very entertaining characters. Then of course, like there's just like a climactic
- 3:05horrible scene that catches you off guard, right that this show Both shows are
- 3:12well known for now at this point quick tangent here Actually I wanted to get
- 3:16into because it just clicked for the memory for me. So we've never talked
- 3:23about this on the podcast before, but one of the reasons why we're doing
- 3:30this podcast is because Nick and I have a habit of getting on the phone
- 3:35with each other to geek out about whatever it is that we both just watched.
- 3:39And you know, at one point we were like, well, we
- 3:42should start recording our geek outs. Whether or not anybody listens, we're wasting
- 3:46time not doing it right. And I could be wrong, Nick, but
- 3:51I think one of the first shows we did that with as adults was Game
- 3:55of Thrones. I'm pretty confident in it is. Yeah, that sounds that
- 4:00sounds right, Uh, Because we were both in college and we weren't seeing
- 4:04each other nearly as much anymore, and that was one of our ways of
- 4:06staying connected. Yeah, I think that's one hundred percent accurate. That sounds
- 4:12that definitely sounds right. So it's very cool that it's a little full circle
- 4:15here with us being able to talk about House of the Dragon. Now,
- 4:16this is great. Yeah, this is so well. You kept me company
- 4:19talking about Game of Thrones as I would have an hour and a half drive
- 4:24home. I really appreciated you for that. Those were dark times, dark
- 4:30times and dark times. Indeed. Yeah, if anyone listens to us and
- 4:35they have a long commute, I sympathize, and you will get through it
- 4:39and it will not be forever. All right, You're gonna you're gonna get
- 4:42through it. We're just talking about the drive, not the episode. Just
- 4:46to be clear, Just to be clear, I mean the episode's dark times
- 4:50record. True. Yeah, this one's yeah. Oh man, all right,
- 4:59give me your give me your thoughts, any other thoughts besides I think
- 5:03so, I'll say this just right before we really dive into the knit and
- 5:08gritted this. This story ended with a pretty famous scene that for some reason
- 5:15I didn't think we were gonna get this early. The scene is referred to
- 5:18as the blood and Cheese scene, and it's you know, of course,
- 5:25the scene where agon sun Is is murdered in front of Helena and it's it's
- 5:31a pretty violent scene. And I don't know, I just I I thought
- 5:34we were gonna get it later. I was not expecting it in the premiere,
- 5:39but I thought it was done really well, and we'll get into that.
- 5:43It just this whole episode just kind of caught me off guard. I
- 5:46don't think I was prepared to just be back in this world. I like
- 5:49the premiere just kind of snuck up on me. I was excited on Sunday
- 5:53night, and you know, here we are. Yeah. I don't think
- 5:56you can prepare. You can't prepare for this, for this world. It's
- 6:00like killing babies and stuff. You can't prepare for that. It's unbelievable.
- 6:06It's ridiculous. Anyway, ridiculous. Take it away. Where are we starting?
- 6:12Where do you want to start? I actually really want to start at
- 6:15the very beginning for for two reasons. Number one, So the beginning of
- 6:19this episode, I guess, just as a quick rundown. We are reunited
- 6:25with Jharis as he is rounding off allies for his mother. He learns the
- 6:33news of Luceras having been killed, and there's a lot of like regrouping going
- 6:40on in the fallout of Luceras' death right, and we are watching everyone kind
- 6:46of react to it, and that that's more or less what this episode is
- 6:53is the fallout of his death right, and we see some people grieve,
- 6:58we see some people take action, we see different political maneuvers in the making,
- 7:03and ultimately the fires of war are getting hotter and hotter. But at
- 7:10the beginning of this episode is not hot. It's actually the opposite of hot.
- 7:14It is the return to Winterfell, which I was so excited to see
- 7:18and again caught off guard. I wasn't expecting to be in Winterfell really at
- 7:24all, which I don't know why I wasn't expecting that, I will,
- 7:28I forgot you weren't expecting it is so I didn't think. I mean,
- 7:34they did pick up pretty much where we left off from season one, right,
- 7:38but I think there was a part of me that didn't think it was
- 7:41gonna be right where we left off, like the immediate aftermath. And part
- 7:47of the reason is just because you know, he's in Winterfell. Her son
- 7:54goes to Winterfell at the end of season one to round up to, you
- 7:59know, solidify this darks being Allies and it's been two years and like,
- 8:05you know, he's a he's a younger guy from an from a filming perspective,
- 8:11and I think I was shocked that they were showing us the Winterfell scenes
- 8:13because the actor, whose name I don't know, is significantly older than you
- 8:20know, his you know then he was you know, two three years ago
- 8:26when they filmed season one, so they're felt like we're seeing him like it's
- 8:33a time jump from like a real life perspective for the actor, right,
- 8:37but it's not really a time tame. He looks a little older, right
- 8:41exactly. That's why it was weird for me. Like I wasn't really expecting
- 8:46to see Winterfel because I figured like we'd get some kind of scene where,
- 8:48you know, maybe he's back from Winterfell or something. Granted, he's still
- 8:52gonna look older, but I don't know. I guess that's part of the
- 8:54reason I was a little bit thrown off. It's like the immediate aftermath and
- 8:58like he's finding out from from the Starks about you know, with the raven,
- 9:03about the about his brother's death, which is pretty That was a really
- 9:07cool scene when he's on top of the wall, hold up before before we
- 9:11get there, because I have a big question about the Wall. Okay,
- 9:15so I think I called him Ja Harris before. It's just sarahs just Saras
- 9:20is talking to Kreagan Stark. Okay, and again, this is just a
- 9:28character I had forgotten about. Creagan Stark is actually like pretty important like historically
- 9:31in this lore for reasons I'm sure are gonna play out in this show,
- 9:37like there's there's no other reason to introduce this character. However, something that
- 9:41really confused and like I needed to remind myself about Creagan's like role in the
- 9:48world, because like the way was set up, like I thought he the
- 9:50way that they introduced him, I thought he was like the head of the
- 9:52Knight's Watch for a moment and I was like, no, he's not.
- 9:56He's the head of how Stark. Wait, why the hell are they on
- 10:00the wall right now? Like I know we started in Winterfell, but then
- 10:01all of a sudden, we're just on the wall, right And it's not
- 10:05like I mean, like, hey, maybe he wants to show them the
- 10:07wall, right, Okay, cool, It's not like the Wall is like
- 10:11a short walk away from Winterfell, like it's pretty far. We saw John
- 10:16and his uncle go like, I don't know what three four days before,
- 10:20like they got to the wall, like it's a long walk. Yeah.
- 10:24Yeah. So the cool part about this episode is that, oh, you
- 10:28know, it opens with Winterfel really and and I love that You're just gonna
- 10:31completely ignore this, You're like, yeah, all right, whatever, Nerd,
- 10:33No, no, no, I'm getting there. I'm getting there.
- 10:35I'm getting there. I'm getting there. But I have to I wanted to
- 10:39talk about, like why they transitioned, why they even like the way that
- 10:43they got us to the wall, right, why Okay, they were telling
- 10:46us the story historically about how they used to be chosen, how how men
- 10:50used to be chosen to get to the Wall, because they you know,
- 10:54back in the day, it was it wasn't always about you know, the
- 10:58West Roast from Game of Thrones is it's thieves and people who have been caught
- 11:03for crimes and they're sent to the Wall and that's the or they die.
- 11:07Right, But back in the day, there wasn't as that they didn't have.
- 11:11It sounds like after today's episode or you know this recent episode, that
- 11:16that's not fully established. So they also pick men from winter from Winterfell and
- 11:20you're putting your hand in a bag and if you pull out a black stone,
- 11:26then you have to go and serve basically at the wall. So they
- 11:30show us like this cool scene. We get some kind of history about how
- 11:33you they used to choose people for the wall, and then we are all
- 11:37of a sudden, we see is it Johannes what is his name? It
- 11:41is Sirius and and the Lord of Winterfell are now like taking the elevator up
- 11:50to the top of the wall, and this is where you're like, why
- 11:52are we even here? This took four days to get there, Like,
- 11:56this is a very long way to get to the wall, And the conversation
- 12:01that they're having is not like we've been traveling together for four days. It's
- 12:05like we literally just saw each other today, right, Yeah, these are
- 12:11great points. And of course, like he tells the story at the top
- 12:16right Gregan Hall, like Stark tells the story at the top about how he's
- 12:20brought everyone else or about how like the Starks have always brought, you know,
- 12:26a leader from from the Seven Kingdoms to the top so they can see
- 12:30the true scope of what they're guarding, essentially to try to give them an
- 12:33idea of why it's important that they keep the Wall defended and they keep the
- 12:37North secure. But yeah, the fact that we kind of just pick up
- 12:41with like here's a winterfil shot and then oh wait, now we're at the
- 12:46wall when we know that it takes a long time to get there, very
- 12:50funny. Uh. I will say, though, I want to piggyback off
- 12:56of what you were saying earlier in regard even though I was like, why
- 13:01are we here, like and I'm confused, like let's go, wait,
- 13:03what roll is Creagan? But uh, the scene itself You're you're absolutely right
- 13:09is awesome a reminder of how important duty is to like the Northmen, right,
- 13:16and like the Northmen are just cut from like a different cloth than like
- 13:20the western rosie folk, you know, like duty and honor means something totally
- 13:24different. I think there's that comment where Creagan says we'll give you two thousand
- 13:30gray beards, and just Haa's is like, oh, so like old dudes,
- 13:35and Creagan's like, yeah, but it's like old dudes who don't fuck
- 13:39around. Man. That was great, And then like I think the line
- 13:43that literally gave me chills in this scene, like literal chills, was him
- 13:48telling the story of what you were saying about Alison and Otto coming and the
- 13:56dragons refusing to cross the Yeah, across the wall, Like I get chills
- 14:01thinking about it right now. Well, and then what we know now from
- 14:07the last in the future when a dragon crosses the wall? Not great right
- 14:13outcome? Ah, this is this is interesting because because because that's an interesting
- 14:18point, people online have been saying that that's bad continuity for a Game of
- 14:24Thrones. But you bring up something here, what if, all right,
- 14:28so like targarians can have dragon dreams, right and they can see the future.
- 14:33What if dragons can have dragon dreams right, like they're fully aware of
- 14:39what's on the other side. Maybe maybe that is my headcanon today. That's
- 14:43a Joe theory. That's a Joe theory. Take it to the bank.
- 14:50You know, the game theory got retired. You know what I'm talking about
- 14:52on YouTube Game theory the guy who was like, man, that's a game
- 14:56theory. Matt Patten. I'm definitely you him before. He's still like a
- 15:01huge internet celebrity. He retired earlier this year. Him the catchphrase is up
- 15:05for grabs, all right, Well, it's Joe theory. Everybody to come
- 15:13up with some flash here. But AnyWho, Uh so, yeah, this
- 15:18this scene transitions uh pretty quickly to who I would identify as the current star
- 15:24of the show, Raniera, and her grief over her son Luceris and how
- 15:35they they're trying. She's trying to, like I think she's trying to come
- 15:39to grips with reality, right, and she doesn't quite accept it until she
- 15:43sees the dragon's wing and his clothes. She's really like looking for a body
- 15:48because she needs closure, right, and and uh, Damon is talking with
- 15:54what's her name from Rains? Yeah, Damon's talking to a Rain and Rain
- 16:00is just saying that, you know, when her daughter died, she needed
- 16:03to see the bones basically to believe it. And so this is really what
- 16:07Ranera is doing, is she's looking for a body. She's looking for some
- 16:12sign that what she's been told is true, and as you were just hinting
- 16:18at, she eventually finds it. She finds that the wing of her son's
- 16:22dragon and then like basically his cloaker clothes maybe was what it is or whatever
- 16:29that whatever remnants are left of a cloak, yeah, and which is just
- 16:37you know, disturbing and heartbreaking in its own right. It's also so wild
- 16:44to me how different sizes those dragons can be and the dragons are right,
- 16:48like because even at the end of season one, Vegar is just so freaking
- 16:53massive compared of Godzilla proportions unbelievable. The really cool to share scope with those
- 17:00those dragons and how they really make them like unique as far as the size
- 17:06goes. So you rewatched season one before this started, right, Yeah?
- 17:10Yeah? Yeah, So I rewatched the finale, and I for I knew
- 17:15that the last scene is like actually kind of scary, but I forgot how
- 17:19much it feels like Jaws, you know, like where all of a sudden,
- 17:23like you can't see the right right and like you just don't know where
- 17:26the shark is gonna come from. Yeah, and then yeah, yeah,
- 17:32rut what a brutal, scary scene. Yeah, insane. Yeah. I
- 17:37think to get some organization here, Nick, I think I'm going to focus
- 17:41on the Blacks for now, and for the second half of this we'll focus
- 17:47on Team Green since that's ultimately where this episode ends, is with the Greens.
- 17:52Cool. So you were talking about Damon before we get that conversation with
- 17:59Damon and Nier. He's and he seems like his like motivation of this episode
- 18:04is just like let's go, like let's throw down, you know, like
- 18:08what he's trying to do in every scene, and like it's it's not paying
- 18:11off until until the end. Uh what what do you think about where Damon's
- 18:17head is at right now? Oh? Just constant aggression. He he just
- 18:22he wants the war. He wants to he wants to be in battle.
- 18:26He's a warrior, so it makes sense he wants to take his dragons and
- 18:30go fuck sh it up. Not really blame him, can't blame him,
- 18:36but you know, thankfully, you know, like Raniera is is uh,
- 18:41well, you know in this case, thankfully she's she's mourning, and she's
- 18:45mourning in her own way, and like no one's gonna she's the she's the
- 18:48queen, she's the king, and so she's not going to like Damon can't
- 18:52give anyone orders, right, And he's trying though, he's trying. He's
- 18:56trying, and no one's listening to him. And also not bold enough to
- 19:00go by himself. So it's kind of like he well he's not stupid enough
- 19:04to mess with Vagar, right, Like Vigar is like yeah, alone alone.
- 19:11So but yeah, just constant aggression from him, and and that's really
- 19:17it, right, There's not a lot else going on on Team Black,
- 19:21I would say, there's mostly just him trying and a struggle to move right.
- 19:26Yeah. Yeah. The cool part though about Rania is and I didn't
- 19:30realize this until after the episode when they do the little recap with the directors
- 19:36and the producers of the show. She only has one line in the whole
- 19:38episode, which is really awesome, and I think the line is basically just
- 19:44I want aim In Targarian. This is just is what the line is.
- 19:48That's it. That's all she says, which like, it's amazing that you
- 19:52didn't notice that really until after it's so, you know she I think it's
- 19:57really well done. Speakers, I was paying attention. I notice, well
- 20:02you're you're you know, you're a nerd. I know you can a nerd,
- 20:08but it's true that. Yeah, that's really awesome that that's her only
- 20:14line in the whole the whole first episode is I want Aimon Targarian. Of
- 20:18course, this is what Damon's been waiting for. And uh, he takes
- 20:22it upon himself to figure out a way to to get into King's landing and
- 20:29obviously uses the what was her name, the white White Worm for information and
- 20:41then from there finds the the two the two men that's going that are going
- 20:45to help him get a son for a son here at the end. But
- 20:51what about you say, that's for Team Black that you want to talk about?
- 20:53Yes, uh, there there are two things in particular, the first
- 20:59being just SRI's returning home to talk to Ranira. I think this was like
- 21:06my second favorite scene in the entire episode. I just I really loved the
- 21:11acting here. Well, I love the delivery of what just sarahs is trying
- 21:18to say because he walks in and he's trying to be, you know,
- 21:22the Prince of Dragonstone, and he's trying to do his duty right, which
- 21:29like that's the theme of this episode, is you know, doing doing your
- 21:33duty right. That's the way it starts, and we certainly see some hypocrites
- 21:37of that on Team Green. And as as he's trying to like give that
- 21:42report you know of House Aaron and how Stark. Once he gets to how
- 21:48Stark, like you can hear his voice start to crack and like the tears
- 21:52just start to come, and his mother embraces him for like the little boy
- 21:55that like he is right, Like he's just a child, right, and
- 21:57like the dude just lost his younger brother, which like you know, he
- 22:00definitely feels responsible for because he wasn't there. Yeah. I thought that scene
- 22:07was heartbreaking, very yeah, extremely heartbreaking, and that was done so well
- 22:15also because when he first starts talking, I was like, oh, it's
- 22:19so weird that, like this is the first thing he's saying to her.
- 22:22They must have debriefed about his brother in a different room off camera, like
- 22:27it is how I first started to think about it. And then he gets
- 22:32halfway through telling her what the updates are and he just breaks down and like,
- 22:37Okay, he was trying to hold it together and get through get through
- 22:41the list of all the houses he had just gotten to visit. So yeah,
- 22:45truly heartbreaking because it starts off so so innocent, because you know,
- 22:52it seems like a matter of fact. Yeah, it's like a very matter
- 22:55of fact at the beginning, and then all of a sudden, she's like,
- 22:56oh wait, the weight of everything that is currently happening is like coming
- 23:02down on top of him because he's telling his mother. Yeah, brutal heartbreaking
- 23:07for sure. I think I don't know for me, Like the way I
- 23:11interpret that scene, I think it's because, like I think in that moment,
- 23:15he realizes, like how unimportant, Like the things that he's saying actually
- 23:19are, Like they're obviously they're important, they are important, but like for
- 23:22the elephant in the room, they don't matter at all, right, which
- 23:29ultimately I think is what like kills me inside when I hear him say that,
- 23:33And like because like we're only at the beginning of this war, Like
- 23:36it's only going to get worse from here, you know. The other thing
- 23:41I wanted to bring up this was a small thing, but it is ultimately
- 23:45going to have some big implications. So Corlis Valerian he is he doesn't have
- 23:52a lot to do in this episode, but like off screen, he's doing
- 23:56a lot, you know. So we we see Corla. He's getting his
- 24:00ship. It's getting his legs back. I don't know what you say about
- 24:03repairing a ship. I don't know nothing about no boats. So he's getting
- 24:08his ship repaired, but he has a blockade at the gullet that's cutting off
- 24:15trade King's landing, which we hear from Team Green is having some like pretty
- 24:21pretty bad implications, right, So our our master of I forgot what they
- 24:26call it. A master of naval warfare. What is that called? Master
- 24:32of ship? Master of ship? Right, matter of ship? I think,
- 24:33yeah, master of ship. Yeah, our our master of ship is
- 24:37doing a great job holding down the fort. He has this scene talking to
- 24:44this new character and you know, he says, you were the one I
- 24:48heard you were the one who pulled me from the wreckage. And guy's like,
- 24:52it was my duty right keeping him with the theme? Uh, and
- 24:57you know, Corlis reminds him, He's like, hey, like, I
- 25:00owe you a life debt, and the camera like just lingers on the character
- 25:04for like a long time, like for the director to be like, hey,
- 25:07remember remember this guy. He's probably gonna be important. Yeah, I
- 25:15am. I am looking forward to that. Did that sit off any alarm
- 25:18bells for you? Yeah? I mean anytime a ranking member of you know,
- 25:26a house tells tells a lesser member of the city that he has a
- 25:33life debt, basically, it's gonna it's gonna jolt you a little bit.
- 25:40That's gonna be very interesting. He also has a brother, right, who
- 25:41he's also enlisted to help fix the ship. I imagine we're going to get
- 25:45some some kind of insight into what what all that entails here in the future,
- 25:51which will be cool. I always love when we get new characters that
- 25:53we don't really know about, so you know, they they love to give
- 25:57us new characters and then rip our hearts out. So well, uh,
- 26:00we'll see how long they last here. But yeah, no on, no
- 26:04one in the Game of Thrones universe really has any staying power, do they,
- 26:08right exactly? And you know this is a prequel, so we know
- 26:14how pretty much everything ends. Well, yeah, pretty much, although the
- 26:18steaks do feel pretty high. Yeah, I will say that that is there's
- 26:25there's a genius I think to this show. If you're if you're not familiar
- 26:29with like the Targarian Civil War, you know, like, okay, well
- 26:32the Targarians obviously are still around in the future, so they don't wipe themselves
- 26:36out. However, because they're both Targarians, I don't know which family is
- 26:41going to survive, right, So like that, in and of itself,
- 26:42you're not if you're not familiar with the story, that in and of itself
- 26:45is great built in stakes right right. For those of us who are familiar
- 26:51with with the history of this and we know which family is going to come
- 26:52out on top. What's really cool about this show versus like the books,
- 26:59is how it's been told. The book is a history book, and the
- 27:03history book specifically tells us, you know, we got these accounts from this
- 27:07specific character who often like has a contradictory interpretation of events with another character,
- 27:17so we don't know exactly like what the truth is of these moments. And
- 27:21what's been really cool about this show is we're not getting third, third hand
- 27:23accounts. We're getting direct accounts. Certain things have been going down in the
- 27:29show differently than the books, and it's not contradictory, it's this is the
- 27:34first hand account. A perfect example is Aimin and Vagar when they kill luce
- 27:42Aras, because the way it's describing the book is it's a vicious attack and
- 27:47he did it because he had vengeance in his heart, right, and he's
- 27:51just this cold person, right. They describe him as a monster. But
- 27:55in the show, like we see like he's trying to fuck with luce Aras,
- 27:59but he doesn't want to kill. In fact, like when Vagar goes
- 28:00in for the kill, he screams, no, right, right, right,
- 28:04which really cool depth for the character. That like we just don't have
- 28:08in the book because it's, like I said, it's just a different story.
- 28:11And you bring up that point about it, how of it being a
- 28:14history book and we're getting like the first hand account, and how the history
- 28:18books can be a little bit misleading with depending on who is recanting the story.
- 28:22It reminds me of Game of Thrones with the whole Ned Stark and is
- 28:27it Lena oh Lean Leana Stark and you know how John snow essentially ends up
- 28:37being a member of the family, you know, the whole story Game of
- 28:41Thrones until that very last season when we actually get what can be I guess
- 28:48more of a first hand account. We get like the real vision right from
- 28:52I think brands having the vision of what actually happened, which is I guess
- 28:56technically a first hand account. But up until that moment we won, we
- 29:00had like the history book story right, and there was a lot of pieces
- 29:04left out. I don't know. It kind of reminded me of that that
- 29:07particularly. I think that's a really good It's I think that's a really good
- 29:11comparison because so so much of A Song of Ice and Fire is told from
- 29:17the point of view of a character right, right, And they are not
- 29:22reliable narrators ever, which is brilliant, right because from a show perspective,
- 29:26you can almost do whatever they want to as long as they get there the
- 29:30right way, right, as long as they hit the historical beats. Yeah,
- 29:34it's really brilliant. Freaking George R. Martin, that's cool, all
- 29:40right? What else? What else you got? That's all I've got for
- 29:42Team Black, which I think is now a good time to hear a word
- 29:48from our sponsors. And we're back and we still have half an episode to
- 29:52talk about here, which is wild. We still have the Greens to discuss.
- 29:57So I guess to describe what's going on with the Greens is, you
- 30:00know, it's not as reactionary. I mean, in a way, it
- 30:04is, right like they're kind of just like trying to figure out what their
- 30:07next move should be, right, And I think that there's a lot more
- 30:11political intrigue going on in this half of the story, right, Like there's
- 30:15a lot of people trying to like play three D chess with each other here
- 30:19in particular, it feels like Auto, Aimin and Alison are all like working
- 30:26against each other. Yeah, definitely a lot of political turntmoil currently going on
- 30:34at kings Landing. It's very interesting. They all have their own vision of
- 30:38what needs to happen next, but they all know that what happens next is
- 30:42next is war. They just all disagree on how to start, although it's
- 30:48already begun, right, I mean, like there's no other way, nothing
- 30:53else is going to happen. And they even Auto and Alison even have this
- 30:59conversation, you know, later in the episode, like we both know it's
- 31:02war essentially, and they just have to now agree on like how to control
- 31:07Egon. Right, It's like, I freaking love Game of Thrones, Like
- 31:11in this Song of Ice and Fire like, it's it's always about how the
- 31:15people around the king can control the king. It's always about controlling the king
- 31:19instead of letting the king run things, you know. And it's so interesting.
- 31:23It feels very much so that the hand of the king in this case,
- 31:27Auto like is the one in control, right Like, he's the true
- 31:32like master of wester Ross at this point, for now, at least for
- 31:36now. But we've got some little birdies here talking to Agon separately, trying
- 31:42to get him to be a conversation with Larry's is really interesting very interesting.
- 31:48I found myself thinking during this episode that I'm ready for Auto High Tower to
- 31:53not be living anymore, to exit the stage left. He needs to exit.
- 32:00Just I'm getting more and more annoyed at him as the episodes go on.
- 32:02He has played his part well, but I think it's time for him
- 32:07to go. I agree. I think if you could choose a villain for
- 32:13for House of the Dragon, I think some, maybe most, would agree,
- 32:17it's Auto High Tower. Yeah. He's just he's just such a bastard
- 32:22Otto pimped out his daughter to like his best friend who was like way too
- 32:27old for his daughter. Yeah. Yeah, so it goes she's going fine
- 32:31though, Wow, clearly with uh you know her her guard God. Yeah,
- 32:37speaking of duty and honor. The biggest hypocrites of the episode, he's
- 32:42one of the Yeah, yeah, he's He's such an interesting character though,
- 32:46right because like kind of like you were saying, you know, the episode
- 32:50is really about duty in a lot of ways, and we get insight into
- 32:57wait sorry sorry, no that's that's later or earlier. Sorry, we get
- 33:01we get insight into, you know, the the Sir Christen's escapades with the
- 33:08Queen basically or not not the queen anymore. Yeah, yeahs still the queen.
- 33:15Oh no, I guess you're queen. She's not regent. Yeah,
- 33:16yes's queen anymore with the King's mother with Alison. And it's funny, right
- 33:25because you know, he's supposed to be all about this duty and all these
- 33:29things, and then he's you know, essentially having sex with the person he's
- 33:34supposed to guard and then also simultaneously on his off time talking to Aimond about
- 33:42strategy and how to take over and and defeat Damon and or near us.
- 33:46So, uh, it's a very interesting character, Sir Kristen, who,
- 33:52of course, you know, in season one absolutely loses his brain and kills
- 33:58kills the love interest of of one of the Valeyrians. So yeah, what
- 34:02an interesting character. I yeah, I'm glad you brought him up from a
- 34:07segue to auto because, like, let me say, I take back what
- 34:12I said about auto Otto. I think is like the villain of the show.
- 34:15But like as far as like the most despicable characters, I hate Kristin
- 34:21Cole because like, here's here's my thing, right, all right? So
- 34:24outo High Tower's a bastard man, but like at least he has ambition and
- 34:29he's like trying to like selfishly like preserve like his legacy, right, Like
- 34:32there's like a method to the madness, right, there are reasons why he
- 34:37does what he does. Whereas like Kristin Cole is just such a baby,
- 34:42Like he willingly walked into like a relationship with Rania, right like knowing like
- 34:46what it was, and then like as soon as she was like all right,
- 34:50no more, he's like just like just starts crying about it, right
- 34:54and just like emotionally can't handle it, and it decides we'll like screw it,
- 35:00I'm gonna sleep with your best friend. It just like he sucks.
- 35:05He just sucks so much. He's like the dude who like who loves like
- 35:12bullying people. But like as soon as like you start messing with him,
- 35:14you can't you can't handle Yeah, you know. So, as far as
- 35:17I'm concerned, Auto High Tower and and and Sir Kristen are both on my
- 35:22kill list. So hopefully they're both before the end of the end of the
- 35:24season. Hopefully they're both gone. Yes, wonderful. What did we used
- 35:29to call that? What was the what was the the Game of Thrones?
- 35:31Deadpool game, Game of Corpses, yeah, yeah, we should cos they're
- 35:37both on the dead Pool. We should we should get it going after this.
- 35:39Uh all right, and then all right, what else? What else?
- 35:45I really want to talk about? A gone? Yeah, oh yeah,
- 35:47that's where I was going, so A go. I really like the
- 35:52difference in this first episode. I love it. He's like, he's it's
- 35:57only been a couple of weeks, right, Season one has ended essentially since
- 36:02this whole crazy since he became king, It's only been a few weeks in
- 36:07story time, and he is like taken, He's he's the king now.
- 36:10He actually feels very king like in some ways, and he's got a great
- 36:15presence. Yeah, I love I loved him in this episode and really Coolry,
- 36:23like really cool seeing him want to bring his son into into the meetings
- 36:29and and like try to get his son involved already, which of course is
- 36:32the show like ripping our hearts out before ripping our hearts out, you know,
- 36:37showing us this cute kid, playful in the meeting he's not supposed to
- 36:40be in because Agon loves him so much that he wants to, you know,
- 36:44show him what it's like to be and you know, he wants to
- 36:46bring his air up correctly on like how he was brought up. Damn show,
- 36:51damn she I do like that, like he's he's intentionally like a Shenaniganizer,
- 36:58right, Like he's just like trying to like stir the pot, right,
- 37:00like he wants his kid to also stir the pot. I I think
- 37:06I think that there is like some division. I don't know if people dislike
- 37:08him, but I think there's some division on how people are interpreting him,
- 37:14right like, because I think some people are like, oh, well,
- 37:16he's a lot like Jeoffrey. I don't. I don't think he's a lot
- 37:20like Jeoffrey. I people need to go back and watch right right, right,
- 37:23Jeffrey was nothing like Joy crazy. I think I think the only I
- 37:30think the only similarity you can make is Agon. Agon and Jeoffrey both just
- 37:37don't are very smart, right, Like they're they're not that smart, especially
- 37:40Geoffre. Jeoffrey was horribly dumb, right. I wouldn't describe Agon is particularly
- 37:46smart either. However, to what you were saying, I think Agon has
- 37:52a good heart. Ultimately, Yeah, they show it in the episode Yeah
- 37:55when he's when he's has the uh the people from King's Landing, when he's
- 38:01got them. What is the petitions? He got the petitions for what need
- 38:05to be done? Like, you can tell that he cares based on the
- 38:07answers he wants to give and then the answer he gives the Blacksmiths against Auto
- 38:13High Tower's instruction. Right, He's like, they need the money now,
- 38:16we need them, and we need the smaller groups to be able to win
- 38:22this war. It's like he has the kind of heart that actually could win
- 38:25over the people and the small folk. Right. He actually seems like he
- 38:30has it, at least at the moment. But I think what happens at
- 38:37the end of this episode is going to completely just change this guy's being of
- 38:43course, which is disappointing because I feel like if we could bottle this egg
- 38:47on up, I could see him like running the Seven Kingdoms in it being
- 38:52successful as long as Auto is out of the picture. Right, And like
- 38:57he's got someone he can actually rely on who's not trying to like usurp him
- 39:00or use him. Yeah, I totally agree has him to be a good
- 39:05king. His brother should be his his hand. I don't know, I
- 39:09mean, so so his brother supports him. I agree with that. I
- 39:14think his brother supports him, but his brother is also a psychopath. Yeah,
- 39:19yeah, his brother is a psychopath and he would just want war,
- 39:22which I mean literally aimed. Is Team Green's Damon right, No, he
- 39:29is. He is purposely Yeah, they're purposely being paralleled, waiting for their
- 39:35battle. That's gonna be awesome if it comes. I'm excited for that.
- 39:38I'm assuming it comes here giving me a face. He read the books,
- 39:42so that'll be a good one. So the end of this episode is,
- 39:47of course, Damon has infiltrated the city since he has extensive knowledge of different
- 39:55passageways all around King's Landing, and he makes contact with an old Gold Cloak
- 40:01member and then a rat catcher who the White Worm had informed him of,
- 40:08and he pairs them together. The show does not name these two, however,
- 40:13in the subtitles. I think one of them is named Cheese. Uh.
- 40:15These characters, though, in the book are Blood and Cheese, and
- 40:20they are infamous because of what happens here at the end forward transition there to
- 40:25the end. The thing I wanted to bring up with Agon, I wish
- 40:31that there was just an episode of Agon, just like Brown Out with his
- 40:35dude unthrowned, Like I enjoyed that so much. Yeah, that was cool.
- 40:40Yeah, that's what I'm saying. He's a likable king. At least
- 40:45he's not gonna be anymore because you know, blood and cheese came up in
- 40:49there and just like said, screw it, you ain't got no more ruined
- 40:52it just ruined it. Dude. I mean, look, what is I
- 40:57mean, what does Damon expect. He's sending two idiots, basically sending two
- 41:02village idiots to you know, try to infiltrate the king or the queen or
- 41:12the I mean really they're trying to find Aimen, but like they don't know
- 41:15where they're going. Once they get to the high end of the castle.
- 41:20It's a bad plan. It's a terrible bad plan because so many things can
- 41:24go wrong. And I get it from his point of view. He's like,
- 41:30it's a dude with long hair and one eye. How hard could it
- 41:34be to find I think even says that, he says, it's like it
- 41:36should be easy to find him. It's like, well, of course not,
- 41:38because we don't know what his movements are. And like, based on
- 41:42where they end up, I think they end up in the room that Aimon
- 41:45was just in before Otto interrupted, So like they just missed Aimen. Right.
- 41:53There's a really cool scene though, when they walk into that room and
- 41:58Cheese looks up and sees, uh, it's a it's a portrait of the
- 42:02burning of heron hall with like one of Agon's dragons egg on the first dragons
- 42:08coming over. I think it's Balarion and just spitting hell fire over and like
- 42:13you can tell he's like horrified by the image of it. And honestly,
- 42:17like, I think it's kind of fucked up that the Targarians keep that up
- 42:21there in their room. It's like it's like, damn, this is the
- 42:23best Jesus. That's pretty brutal anyway, So, yeah, they walk in
- 42:30this room, they just miss aimoned. And so they continue their their search
- 42:36through the castle and they stumble into the queen's quarters with two babies, you
- 42:44know, the guy and the girl, the prince and princess sleeping. Yeah,
- 42:46they take a knife to the queen and they ask her to tell them
- 42:51which one is the sun, and like so many questions are going on during
- 42:55this, right because in her head she's like, do I tell them who
- 43:01the son is? Are they going to know I'm lying? Do I tell
- 43:06them it's my daughter, and then hope that they don't understand that I'm lying.
- 43:13And then they decided, oh, I'm I wouldn't give up my son,
- 43:15so I give them my daughter, like they at least that's what's going
- 43:21through my head, right, Like her decision to point to the prince very
- 43:28quickly. It seemed like it felt like she did kind of point quickly.
- 43:30And then Blood even says she wouldn't she wouldn't give them up that easy.
- 43:36It must be the other one, right, And then I think Cheese is
- 43:38the one who's who looks her in the eye and decides that she was telling
- 43:42us the truth from the beginning. And then they they go and they kill
- 43:46they kill the boy, which the whole time, I'm like, why are
- 43:49they even asking her? It's pretty easy to find out which one is the
- 43:52boy, which one was the girl? So I I gave this some thought
- 43:55because I had the same idea. It was like, what's the point,
- 43:59right, Like why not just check? And I the only thought I have
- 44:04to defend, to defend what they did, which I don't want to.
- 44:08But I think the idea here is that they're trying to do this as quietly
- 44:14as possible. Right, and like as soon as like one of the kids
- 44:17like wakes up, like now there's an unknown variable that could like possibly alert
- 44:22people that they're there. You know, like they just want to like get
- 44:27the information, kill one of the kids, and then run the fuck out
- 44:30of there, you know what I mean. I think that's Lucy Goosey logic.
- 44:32But that's the only idea I can come up with. Yeah, that
- 44:36is the only idea, but it's totally dumb in this scenario, yes,
- 44:39because she grabs the girl anyway and gets out of there immediately, and I
- 44:43mean she could she goes for help, right, She goes to Alison's room,
- 44:47which you know, she's mid mid screw. She walks in there,
- 44:51which is just like okay, this is this is just everyone knows this is
- 44:54happening then, right, and then Allison's like what's happened? And then this
- 44:59sense how the episode ends. But we have to talk about the sound effects
- 45:01real quick, like, HBO, thank you for that. She grabs her,
- 45:07so the queen grabs her daughter, and they're getting out of the room
- 45:09and like as they're leaving the room quickly, like you can just hear blood
- 45:13and cheese like stabbing the prince to death. And the sound effects, well,
- 45:20like they're not just they're not just stabbing, They're they're cutting, they're
- 45:23removing the head. You can hear them sawing like the net because told him
- 45:29to bring me the head. Yeah, it's it's pretty brutal. There have
- 45:35been some on online saying like that it was whitewashed because we don't see it,
- 45:40which I don't know if you need to see a kid being decapitated.
- 45:45I think hearing it is enough and it's more than I ever need. I
- 45:50don't even I don't need to see anything else. That was enough and honestly
- 45:54that was more gruesome than actually seeing it. Just hearing it. Yes,
- 45:59I totally agree with this. So the director of this episode is Alan Taylor,
- 46:07and he's he's got quite the resume. He's been making TV and making
- 46:13film for a long time. As far as Game of Thrones goes, He's
- 46:16directed quite a few episodes. What I believe is probably his most famous episode
- 46:22is the Baylor episode nine of season one, which of course is the death
- 46:29of Ned Stark right, And I think you could make some comparisons to those
- 46:36two scenes just based on style, because, like you do, see Ned's
- 46:40head get cut off, but like the way it happens, like it's not
- 46:44like you watch the head fall off, right, like sword comes and then
- 46:47like it's like a cut to black. And I think like you get Aria's
- 46:50reaction to like what actually happened, right, which is like it's our reaction
- 46:54too, right, because we're like, no, no, he didn't actually
- 46:58just die, right, right? So I do you think that there's like
- 47:00a similar a similarness there, right, because like again we see it's a
- 47:06Helen Helena's reaction right of like of j Harris decapitated. Oh god, what
- 47:14a freaking scene, man, And you know what this this has I can't
- 47:16I can't wait for the next episode either because Eggon is gonna absolutely flip out,
- 47:21and he might also blame Aimond protroactively interesting I mean yeah, yeah right,
- 47:28because he because he killed he killed Lucas, So yeah, this doesn't
- 47:32happen if that doesn't happen, So there could be some real interesting turmoil,
- 47:38you know, within Team Green even that just happened, I mean. And
- 47:42then also like no guards, no, nothing, I mean, I guess
- 47:45it's it's just you know, them feeling very safe in their towers, right
- 47:53in their Ivory Towers Tower. They're feeling very safe in the Ivory Tower.
- 47:58They don't need guards outside their doors. Like man, no, I agree,
- 48:04And like what we were saying earlier, one of the genius like elements
- 48:07of this show is, you know, like we know what historical beats are
- 48:10gonna happen. But like, I don't know how Agan's going to react to
- 48:13this. I don't know necessarily how this is going to change him. I
- 48:16don't think me personally, I don't think he's gonna blame Amen. I think
- 48:22he he idolizes his brother too much. I think we idolizes the wrong word.
- 48:28I think he thinks very highly of his brother, and I don't think
- 48:31he's going to go to him. I think, unfortunately, just like all
- 48:36the other women on this show, I think he's gonna blame Helena for the
- 48:39death of Jahir. Yeah. Probably, Yeah, because like it just feels
- 48:44like every woman in this show just gets the fucking worst of it. Yeah,
- 48:47and then of course he'll blame He'll blame Team Black and then well,
- 48:52yes, I mean, if there's if there's the next episode doesn't have dragons
- 48:57from one of the sides going to the other, I don't know what they're
- 49:00dragging it along because this is like, this is the final straw, this
- 49:05is all I wore. It starts in episode two, like it has to.
- 49:08There's no He's going to be completely distraught. Yeah, I mean,
- 49:15if I'm a gone, I'm like, screw it. I'm getting on my
- 49:17dragon right now, right, I'm going right taking care of this myself.
- 49:23So we'll see, we'll see. Let me let me ask you, just
- 49:28as a fun final note here, whose team are you on? Team Black
- 49:35Team Black Man? Yeah? Me too, although although that you know,
- 49:38at the end of the episode, I was like, oh man, this
- 49:42is pretty fucked up. If Auto High Tower also would have died, I
- 49:45might be Team Green. But he's still alive, so I cannot cheer for
- 49:50Team Green yet. But if Auto High Tower dies, I might be flipping
- 49:52sides. Let me just say that I hear that there are some people on
- 49:55Team Green that I like. Yeah, I like Agon Like I kind of
- 50:00like Alison too. I feel bad for Allison kind I've always kind of like
- 50:05Aims. I've always liked him a little bit too. But I love Raniera
- 50:09and Damon too much. There they're so great. Raniera is a badass,
- 50:15so it's so I'm also think fan of Corlis. Yeah, same, and
- 50:22then of course, like if you know whoever side the Starks are on,
- 50:25well yeah, yeah, those are the good guys obviously, oh man.
- 50:34But yeah, a lot to look forward to. It's gonna be a short
- 50:37season, only eight episodes. Uh so we got seven? Yeah right,
- 50:42We've only got this for two months, so seven weeks to go, but
- 50:45it's gonna be I think it's gonna be really great. Seven weeks. This
- 50:47was a really promising start, Nick, If you were to rate it,
- 50:51how would you rate it? Throwing me off with the rating. We don't
- 50:53rate yeah, yeah, we don't normally. What are you doing single episodes?
- 50:58I'm gonna I'm gonna say I'm not going to give it a number.
- 51:00I'm going to give it a from a from a scale of terrible too,
- 51:05uh, excellent. I'm gonna give it a very good all right, all
- 51:09right, very good, very like a very good start, very good from
- 51:13here. Yeah, I'm actually good at it. You know, I'm such
- 51:16a simp, but I don't care. I'm gonna say great. I thought
- 51:19it was great, awesome, awesome, awesome music, awesome acting, great
- 51:24effects. The dragons like amazing the Dragons. Yeah, I'm just I'm just
- 51:30so baby, we're back. We're so excited we were back. So good.
- 51:36Oh but yeah, that'll that'll do it for us today when we come
- 51:40back, Nick, what are what are we reviewing next? What's what's on
- 51:43the docket? Oh? Man, I think the next thing that we're going
- 51:45to be talking about is the opening episode of The Bear season three. Yes,
- 51:50yes, oh my god, I can't wait. Yeah, because we're
- 51:52intertwining with these three TV series now. So we're gonna do The Bear season
- 51:57three, episode one, and then the next thing we'll do at that is
- 52:00probably a halfway through of the Acolyte, and then we'll do a halfway through
- 52:07of the House of the Dragon, and then we'll do a halfway through of
- 52:09The Bear, and then we'll do a review of Deadpool Wolverine, and then
- 52:14we'll do a review of all three TV series when they've ended. We're gonna
- 52:16be eating good this summer something like that. Well, hear my Mary,
- 52:21a little bit, depending on our schedules because life is busy, but you'll
- 52:24be seeing you'll be seeing a lot more of us, unfortunately. But yeah,
