Transcript
- 0:00Back on the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. It is my pleasure to welcome in
- 0:03Alibert Flynn, who was born in Vulcan and is back in Connecticut with his
- 0:08family after a stint in North Carolina. We'll talk about that as well.
- 0:13But good week for you. First of all, on Wednesday, you were
- 0:18one of the many student athletes on three point oh Night that received special recognition
- 0:24for four point zero. That's awesome. Congratulations, thank you, thank you.
- 0:29Yeah, it was special. I mean I think it's just more more
- 0:34saying thanks to our academic counsel Alana. She did great. Like if you
- 0:39look around our team, like we had a bunch of guys who got three
- 0:44point ohs and stuff like that, like eight ten guys you got three point
- 0:48ohs. I'm pretty sure Jake Percival was close to getting a four point zero
- 0:51or maybe dead I'm not sure. But yeah, we all did a good
- 0:54job as a team and it was really special doing the right things off the
- 0:57ice. So what's your few. You don't have a major yet, do
- 1:00you? No? Yeah, So I'm hoping to get into the business school.
- 1:04I apply at the end of my sophomore year and pursue finance, kind
- 1:11of like following the footsteps of Matt pisqually because it seems like he knows what
- 1:15he's doing. So yeah, from some of the players that we've had on
- 1:18the Coaches Show in that direction, they all kind of gravitate to him.
- 1:21What's he just got a he's got a really good mind when it comes to
- 1:25that stuff. Huh. Yeah, for sure, he just knows what he
- 1:26wants to do, so just kind of looking and learning from him, like
- 1:30he's he's got his stuff together. So it's always nice to have a role
- 1:34model like that on the team. So there you go. Husky's won at
- 1:38Northeastern Friday and then unfortunately and it wasn't a loss, but late in the
- 1:42game, your first career goal and it looks like you get a little help
- 1:45from Hudson and shand or take me through the goal. Yeah. So it
- 1:48was late, probably about a minute and a half half left. Coach called
- 1:52my name, so I got on face off in the offensive zone. I
- 1:56was a little scrum kind of towards the blue line and it popped out.
- 2:00I think the defender fell and then Hoddy chipped it over to me. I
- 2:06don't really remember what happened. All I remember is I shot it and I
- 2:08looked back and it went in the net, and I was excited. I
- 2:13was glad I was able to put the boys up kind of have a fighting
- 2:16chance late in the third to try to get back into the game. So
- 2:20I didn't even really realize it, didn't really like process in my mind that
- 2:23I scored until I got onto the bench and I was like, wow,
- 2:25I just I just scored my first goal. So did somebody retrieve the puck
- 2:30for you? Yeah? Yeah, how do you got it for me?
- 2:32So it was awesome. One thing that coach cav has talked about during this
- 2:38season, and it has been a roller coaster ride for this team. I
- 2:40don't know why the wins aren't coming int home. I know goal scoring has
- 2:44been an issue, but everything cav has said, Hudson, Schandor and the
- 2:47leadership group of this team has kept you guys up each and every day.
- 2:52And he says that Hudson is far and away the most positive person he's ever
- 2:54met. Oh yeah, for sure. Coming in as a freshman, those
- 3:00guys have just been great, like bringing us, teaching us the ropes,
- 3:04like knowing how to do things and They're just great examples of how to work
- 3:07hard and put your nose to the ground and keep grinding even if it's not
- 3:10going to go your way. And I just really look forward to following him
- 3:15into battle and coming into playoffs, like I'll do anything to play for those
- 3:19guys, or the guys around me, like my fellow freshman sophomor's juniors.
- 3:23So it's just really great to have those guys as leaders. Oliver, you
- 3:28were from Wilket. You were born in Connecticut, but then your family moved
- 3:30down to North Carolina for a while till you were at seven or eight years
- 3:34old, and you grew up in Raleigh all of the Hurricanes and you know
- 3:38the story there. But I understand you got to watch the Hurricanes and you
- 3:42had a favorite player back in the day. Yeah. Yeah, I always
- 3:46loved watching Eric Stall. I just think he was just he's just a big
- 3:50body. You get into the corners, win a lot of puck battles,
- 3:53and you were strong in front of the net, and I just always loved
- 3:57watching him. And he was a great leader of the Hurricanes, brought home
- 4:00and stuff like that, so it was just awesome. Well, I will
- 4:02tell you this, I was very happy for my friends Chuck Katon and John
- 4:05Forsland to get to get a ring after all the years working with those two
- 4:10guys, and it was great. And in fact, you go on YouTube,
- 4:13you can find Cayton's calls of the game seven of the six final against
- 4:16Edmonton. You came back to Connecticut and I know you spent some time playing
- 4:20juniors here, but you also went to Loomis Chafe. Yeah. Is that
- 4:24kind of about the time you had a feeling that you might be able to
- 4:27do something with hockey and to another level. Yeah, I think it was
- 4:32like my sixteen's year. I've always wanted to play Division one hockey, but
- 4:35I think that's really when I made the jump in my skill level and it
- 4:41kind of turned into a reality. And Yukon was the one school I knew
- 4:46I wanted to go to from a young age, like being fifteen, sixteen
- 4:49years old. I always loved the campus like I was a young kid when
- 4:54I got committed here, just because I knew I wanted to be here and
- 4:57play for Connecticut and where you ca on Jersey. So that's pretty cool.
- 5:02Who reached out to you first? What was that first interaction, Like it
- 5:05was, hell, it's reached out to me first. I was he watched
- 5:12me first at the New England District camp up and I think it was Wallpoole
- 5:16mess. Yeah, so it was, it was, it was. It
- 5:19was surreal having him talk to me, because I was like, Wow,
- 5:24I school my dreams actually talking to me to go and I can one day
- 5:29play for them. So I was. I was really happy. And your
- 5:32thoughts on the new building, It is phenomenal, Like when I when I
- 5:39committed it here, there were talks about it and just stepping foot first time
- 5:44in there, it's surreal. We're just like so lucky to have it and
- 5:47I'm so grateful to be able to go there every day and use the facilities
- 5:51and just get better and work hard. So right, Coach keV talks about
- 5:56the fact that you guys gravitate to that building. Are you much of a
- 5:59ping pong guy? No, I'm not. I usually stay away because I'm
- 6:03not good. I'll get whooked pretty bad, but I'll have played a couple
- 6:08of games against guys who are like my skill level, but I try to
- 6:14stay away. Oliver, We're down to the end of the season here,
- 6:17a big game coming up on Thursday and then who knows how many playoff games.
- 6:23But it has been a just a unique season for the home struggles that
- 6:28you've had. Can you put your finger on what why this thing has not
- 6:32gone the way you hoped? I mean, I don't think so, but
- 6:38I just can say like I'm confident, Like when I look around the room,
- 6:42like before practices, when we're talking about the end of the season,
- 6:46I look around to my fellow teammates. I just know how confident we are
- 6:50coming into playoffs because the good thing about Hockey's playoffs you only have to win
- 6:54your last game, right, So I think, I think playing for each
- 6:59other, when we're playing for each other in a playoff spot, we're going
- 7:01to be a really really dangerous team to come again. So if Maddie and
- 7:06Chase really get going. Yes, how much fun was Friday? By the
- 7:10way? That was a fun game to call? By the way, Yeah
- 7:13it was. It was a fun game. I mean it was just nice
- 7:15to go in there on their senior night. Kind of ruin it upset that
- 7:19they did that to us. But it was a close game Saturday too,
- 7:24so even closer than the score depicted it. But yeah, Hockey East has
- 7:28been a bear this year. Hey Oliver, thanks for a few minutes.
- 7:31Best of luck and hopefully we'll see you. I get to call a few
- 7:34more of your goals during the during the course of your career in stories.
- 7:36Yeah, thank you, Thank you for having me. You're very welcome.
- 7:41More of a you COT Hockey Coaches show on this Monday night in just a
