[SPEAKER_01]: We are the Laura Hounds, your guides to space, Australia.
0:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, I'm Alicia, and I love this movie.
0:27
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's David here, and let's just say that this is not going to make my top 10 list or my top predator film list either.
0:37
[SPEAKER_05]: And I'm John, but nobody knows what I think.
0:41
[SPEAKER_05]: Let's find out in our predator, bad lands, breakdown.
0:45
[SPEAKER_00]: You've been mum on this.
0:47
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's suspiciously mum.
0:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's suspiciously.
0:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I found it like that.
0:52
[SPEAKER_00]: And you and I just realized, when's the last time to three of us?
0:54
[SPEAKER_00]: So it was just the three of us in a podcast.
0:55
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't think back to our MCU days.
0:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Since the MCU hate it, or you left us.
1:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Two of us.
1:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Because there were too many movies like this one.
1:09
[SPEAKER_00]: What's up?
1:09
[SPEAKER_00]: What's up?
1:10
[SPEAKER_01]: So, okay, so we're going to start with a spoiler-free opening for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, we'll talk through what we did or didn't like about the movie on a broad way and we will take a break, actually, for us behind the scenes is going to be a long break, but there will be a commercial break in a warning before we get into spoilers.
1:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Before we do our hot takes, though, I thought that we could begin with
1:34
[SPEAKER_01]: just reminding quickly what are our personal backgrounds with the Predator franchise and what are our personal favorite Predator movies.
1:43
[SPEAKER_01]: So, David, let's start with you.
1:46
[SPEAKER_01]: What's your Predator background and your top two Predator movies are?
1:51
[SPEAKER_00]: I saw the first predator movie in the theater with some buddies of mine and we were all into at that time, um, paintball and so for us, this was like the ultimate, uh, like, you know, bad ass dudes and camouflage with like a cool gear, even though they get completely taken to pieces.
2:13
[SPEAKER_00]: So this has a
2:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Big mythology in my life.
2:17
[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a lot of love for this movie.
2:19
[SPEAKER_00]: It is a it is the height of the Big man action hero genre So really yeah, it's deeply lodged in my psyche for editor two predators the predator So yeah, I have to say I don't I do not remember predators or the predator I don't know if I've actually ever seen them to be honest.
2:44
[UNKNOWN]: Okay
2:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Pray, right?
2:45
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we'll get there in a second.
2:46
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll pray.
2:46
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be a predator of killer color, see that.
2:48
[SPEAKER_00]: And then I've seen the two Alien V predator movies, but that was in relation to the editor's editors.
2:55
[SPEAKER_00]: The predators project that we did.
2:58
[SPEAKER_00]: The Alien project?
2:59
[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, God, my brain's cooking.
3:00
[SPEAKER_00]: My apologies, everybody's been along by.
3:02
[SPEAKER_00]: The Alien's project that I以前 I did a couple of years ago for 45th anniversary of the original movie.
3:11
[SPEAKER_00]: So pray first time I saw it I was like, I kind of bounced off it and then we had one of our eleventhsies movie club things and then I fell in love with that movie And I think it's my number two.
3:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Are we doing rankings?
3:27
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, yeah, I did just shout out.
3:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay.
3:29
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so predator number one right obviously for mythological reasons, right?
3:33
[SPEAKER_00]: Definitely pray is a favorite.
3:36
[SPEAKER_00]: I can't I would put predator to
3:40
[SPEAKER_00]: lower down, but it's such a wild ass movie.
3:45
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's silly, but it's fun.
3:48
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like hot and humid in there and it's just craziness.
3:52
[SPEAKER_00]: So, but it is kind of rough and stereo.
3:56
[SPEAKER_00]: It's got some bad stereo type stuff in it, so.
4:00
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so there's, you know, it's problematic in some ways, but the action is off the hook.
4:03
[SPEAKER_00]: And then it sets up some really important lore, right?
4:06
[SPEAKER_00]: The pistol and all of that stuff.
4:08
[SPEAKER_00]: And the scallion scones.
4:09
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
4:09
[SPEAKER_01]: We definitely get references to that and everything that's happening recently, too.
4:13
[SPEAKER_01]: It's an important way.
4:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
4:15
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I'm going to have to get around to some day watching predators and the predator, but I would
4:30
[SPEAKER_00]: Predator two and killer of killers are all somewhere close to each other in the lower half of that my ranking.
4:37
[SPEAKER_01]: So I would say.
4:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
4:39
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
4:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
4:39
[SPEAKER_01]: So for contrast, say, go next.
4:42
[SPEAKER_01]: My top rankings are definitely the Dan Traktor for trio.
4:47
[SPEAKER_01]: So.
4:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
4:48
[SPEAKER_01]: So, I would say, I mean, whether, like, I prefer this or pray, like this being predator badlands or pray depends on the day, I think, you know, I'm having a real recency bias thing here with predator badlands.
5:01
[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I do love this movie.
5:03
[SPEAKER_01]: I will talk about why.
5:05
[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, those are my top two, then killer of killers.
5:08
[SPEAKER_01]: And then of the older films, I think actually my favorite
5:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Adrian Brody, he's not, it's not that he's my favorite part to be honest, although I think it's funny how he talks in a growl, it's whole time because he's a badass, but that's the one where they are kidnapped and brought to another language and not their language, another planet.
5:32
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, so in some a lot of ways like that movie felt like a sort of test run for this one and then they're like, what if we actually give you a budget to create a different And then yeah, I actually
5:48
[SPEAKER_01]: like my hot take on the discord that people were pushing back on is that the really action centric ones like the original predator follow a bit lower.
5:59
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not the bottom of my list, but it's it's in the bottom half of my shirt.
6:03
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
6:04
[SPEAKER_01]: And I have a soft spot for the AVP movies, I think they are, there's some good things about them.
6:11
[SPEAKER_00]: They're not great, but there's some good things about them that I would like to see better realized now that we have, I forget which one it is, is it alien v-predator that that one actually has some lore building and some youture prime stuff and there's that one I think is
6:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry CW, but I do not at, totally it's like off.
6:40
[SPEAKER_00]: It's, it's very strange.
6:42
[SPEAKER_01]: What about you, Jean?
6:43
[SPEAKER_01]: What did your thought some predator, the franchise?
6:47
[SPEAKER_05]: Oh boy, okay.
6:49
[SPEAKER_05]: Hmm, pray.
6:51
[SPEAKER_05]: Who'd be my number one?
6:52
[SPEAKER_05]: Wow.
6:54
[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
6:55
[SPEAKER_05]: Pray would be my number one.
6:57
[SPEAKER_05]: Followed by Predator.
7:00
[SPEAKER_05]: Um, then followed by, can I, can I do the crossovers?
7:06
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah.
7:07
[SPEAKER_05]: So at the inverses predator, wow.
7:09
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, barely she got loves.
7:12
[UNKNOWN]: Okay.
7:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
7:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
7:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, I can see with those rankings, the like early inverses predator, it has, sorry, spoilers for past literature movies.
7:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
7:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry.
7:22
[SPEAKER_01]: That one's been out for a long time now.
7:25
[SPEAKER_01]: But it has the team up, you know, the aspect that this film also features.
7:31
[SPEAKER_01]: So I can see why.
7:32
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
7:34
[SPEAKER_05]: So those will be my top
7:38
[SPEAKER_05]: Killer killers, you know, but yeah, I think
7:44
[SPEAKER_05]: I think those four would be, yeah, it would be us.
7:48
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so let's talk about the new one.
7:50
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, this is going to be our spoiler free hottakes, just to set the premise a young predator outcast from his clan finds an unlikely alley on his journey in search of the ultimate adversary.
8:03
[SPEAKER_01]: And so this is the first movie that's really from a member of, and I think it's the first time they're saying on film.
8:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so I'm going to get this other way now.
8:12
[SPEAKER_01]: The pronunciation was, according to the linguists, according to the guy who invented the language, the pronunciation is Yau Chha.
8:22
[SPEAKER_01]: And that follows with how they pronounce it.
8:24
[SPEAKER_01]: But...
8:25
[SPEAKER_01]: in the director and in this film itself, they keep saying, y'all chess, so I'm like fine, fine, I guess we've made it y'all, so I don't know.
8:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I might say both.
8:40
[SPEAKER_00]: And to put a little asterisk on that, there hasn't been a lore Bible, right?
8:45
[SPEAKER_00]: There hasn't been a definitive thing, right?
8:47
[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's
8:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, yes.
8:49
[SPEAKER_00]: In between films, long periods in between films, and then there's nobody been, there's no keeper of the chronicles for this.
8:56
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
8:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
8:57
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, because there's also, there are like the books and the comics and they are full of lore, but then the movies, they're definitely not canon to the movies or maybe that, you know, but then track the books, definitely pulling things from them, or even that alien versus predator movie, it was pulling directly from that.
9:17
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of lore out there, but it doesn't mean it's canon to what we're watching.
9:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
9:22
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
9:22
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
9:22
[SPEAKER_00]: The all-in-screen canon versus the printed canon don't always look like- Right.
9:26
[SPEAKER_01]: Even the printed canon, I think contradicts itself, so it's kind of like- it's like, um, I suppose like the extended universe Star Wars, you know, and that's kind of why they- Right.
9:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
9:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway.
9:37
[SPEAKER_01]: So, Jean, would you like this fairly well to speak on that more?
9:43
[SPEAKER_05]: I like this movie.
9:45
[SPEAKER_05]: Yes.
9:46
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, I'm a sucker for, you know, family drama and found family, and this had that in spades.
9:54
[SPEAKER_05]: So I was very intrigued by Beck and all of the surrounding, you know, lore for him, particularly.
10:05
[SPEAKER_05]: And he becomes who, I don't know, should I say he?
10:12
[SPEAKER_05]: in the film.
10:13
[SPEAKER_05]: So.
10:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
10:15
[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
10:15
[SPEAKER_05]: So he.
10:16
[SPEAKER_05]: So yeah, I really like this movie.
10:19
[SPEAKER_05]: I thought some of the action sequences were spectacular.
10:23
[SPEAKER_05]: The creature designs were amazing.
10:26
[SPEAKER_05]: Just yeah, overall.
10:28
[SPEAKER_05]: I really got into it and I really liked it.
10:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
10:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Cool.
10:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Cool.
10:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And David, this was not your salad as we said.
10:38
[SPEAKER_00]: No, I said.
10:40
[SPEAKER_00]: And I would be clear.
10:41
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's a bad movie.
10:43
[SPEAKER_00]: The plot was coherent.
10:45
[SPEAKER_00]: The setup was very straightforward.
10:50
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like a found family storyline anymore.
10:54
[SPEAKER_00]: I feel...
10:56
[SPEAKER_00]: There's been a lot of that and I'm just kind of done with it.
11:00
[SPEAKER_00]: I know some people have been talking about the comparisons and connectivity to Star Wars type of story.
11:08
[SPEAKER_00]: And for me, I didn't immediately think of Star Wars at all.
11:12
[SPEAKER_00]: I thought Guardians of the Galaxy.
11:14
[SPEAKER_00]: I felt very much that this moved into an MCU style of storytelling, where it's not so much an arc but a flip.
11:23
[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a character who's going along and then suddenly at some point they have their little moment and we don't see the the process of their flip but it's suddenly their flipped and their you know now their family and their you know all coming together.
11:38
[SPEAKER_00]: So there was a lot that I couldn't predict about this movie but I could predict
11:42
[SPEAKER_00]: the state of the characters as a group by the end of the movie that that was a parent to me from from very early on without being spoiler spoiler re about some of those details.
11:54
[SPEAKER_00]: So
11:55
[SPEAKER_00]: This movie for me, you know, we have our little different tests of things, you know, Pukula for violence and this and that.
12:01
[SPEAKER_00]: And so for me, this fails the Lopez test of does a property fall within its parent genre.
12:09
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if it's part of a universe does it actually be part of that universe.
12:13
[SPEAKER_00]: And for me, a lot of it is the humanization of the predators, the anthropomorphizing of them such that we was a very clear story, you know, the brothers and the father, and trying to come
12:36
[SPEAKER_00]: is a very different thing.
12:38
[SPEAKER_00]: It's an alien thing.
12:40
[SPEAKER_00]: It, we can do a story told from a predator standpoint.
12:44
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have any issue with that.
12:47
[SPEAKER_00]: But it, it just felt like the characters were going on this, oh, the friends, we make along the way kind of storyline,
13:05
[SPEAKER_00]: What are the, what are the youtcha and and what is going on with their culture, I mean, that's a much of their culture, but it didn't tell a story a youtcha story for me.
13:16
[SPEAKER_00]: It told a human story for me and
13:19
[SPEAKER_00]: I know we've got to have storytelling that is that we can understand, but it didn't work for me.
13:25
[SPEAKER_00]: The construct didn't work for me.
13:27
[SPEAKER_00]: And then I will say that I tried to be very careful about my critique relative to my viewing experience.
13:34
[SPEAKER_00]: I saw a matinee, my local theater, and it was on the not great screen that my theater has.
13:40
[SPEAKER_00]: So it was really muddy and dark.
13:42
[SPEAKER_00]: So I couldn't even enjoy the set piece.
13:44
[SPEAKER_00]: And that was like, that's just disappointing and I'm trying to make sure that that's not part of my critique of the story and the character development.
13:52
[SPEAKER_00]: That's two separate things.
13:54
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm going to have a really hard time talking about special effects and other things because I just didn't have a great viewing experience.
14:01
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
14:01
[SPEAKER_00]: So.
14:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
14:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
14:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, okay.
14:05
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, as I said, I feel quite different than I did.
14:08
[SPEAKER_01]: The first time I saw it, I saw it on Dolby, so I did get to see the special effects in their full glory and that.
14:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Nice.
14:16
[SPEAKER_01]: As far as I'm concerned, it's a front runner for the VFX Oscar.
14:19
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see if that plays out.
14:20
[SPEAKER_01]: But,
14:21
[SPEAKER_01]: I did not myself in my head go to the Star Wars comparisons, but as soon as people started seeing it, I started to hear a lot about the Star Wars comparisons, and I see it, I see it.
14:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Like even, you know, I really like the Star Wars, it's Star Wars Explained YouTube channel, and they put out a video like what Star Wars can learn from Predator Badlands.
14:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Just make the movies already, no.
14:46
[SPEAKER_01]: And I've seen people call it like an episode of the Mandalorian.
14:49
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, OK, I mean, I guess I see it.
14:52
[SPEAKER_01]: I definitely am someone for found family.
14:55
[SPEAKER_01]: We just had that episode where I was a guest on Nevermind the Music just came out recently about Hope Punk.
15:05
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is definitely a Hope Punk movie.
15:11
[SPEAKER_01]: It's, I said, the subtitle of this movie, I have in the notes, is toxic masculinity.
15:16
[SPEAKER_01]: There is a better way.
15:17
[SPEAKER_01]: So I find a very interesting, you know, in terms of you're talking about the Lopez scale.
15:25
[SPEAKER_01]: And I find it very interesting that this was written by the same person who wrote Prey.
15:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so was his him in Dan Traktorberg, who is also, of course, the director, uh, and Patrick Eisen is the name of the writer of, uh, he wrote the screenplay for this in the stories by him and Dan Traktorberg together.
15:46
[SPEAKER_01]: And um, pray, I think you might agree is, has more of that traditional predator feel.
15:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, but this one, I, yeah, it does, you know, I said in our conversation on the second breakfast for this month for subscribers, I said that it's not a James gun movie, but it definitely could be, you know, in terms of it has features some of like the heart, there's cute animals, there's found family, there's, you know,
16:16
[SPEAKER_01]: But for me, yeah, this just really worked.
16:20
[SPEAKER_01]: It's really, I rewatched it again to make the notes.
16:23
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think I like it even more now, just being just seeing how things are set up.
16:29
[SPEAKER_01]: And I do think that it actually is like a predator movie in unexpected ways.
16:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Like it might not have some of the go-to things, you know, in terms of like predator vision or things like that.
16:39
[SPEAKER_01]: But it does have the classic story about an underdog,
16:44
[SPEAKER_01]: who needs to learn all of the tools of their environment to, I mean, no spoilers, but come on.
16:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm really biting my tongue.
16:53
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like saying, yeah, about some of that, about the formatting of a predator movie and I'm all for breaking down.
17:02
[SPEAKER_00]: and subverting expectations and building new storylines, but yeah, I do have some critique about the way that that all went.
17:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Because they do include it in the movie, right?
17:13
[SPEAKER_00]: There are hallmark patterns to the movie, and I just don't quite agree with them or not.
17:21
[SPEAKER_05]: I don't find Star Wars or guardians in this.
17:25
[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
17:25
[SPEAKER_05]: Really?
17:26
[SPEAKER_05]: I truly don't.
17:29
[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
17:29
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
17:30
[SPEAKER_00]: So we have some things to talk about.
17:31
[SPEAKER_05]: I don't find them.
17:32
[SPEAKER_05]: I don't find them.
17:33
[SPEAKER_05]: I don't find it in this.
17:34
[SPEAKER_05]: I think, um.
17:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, deck certainly not, um, so there's that.
17:43
[SPEAKER_05]: And thank God for miracles.
17:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
17:45
[SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, just, I didn't feel that watching.
17:50
[SPEAKER_05]: the film that I was watching something that Gun had done or something that wasn't one of the trilogies.
18:00
[SPEAKER_05]: I didn't get that sense at all because I just felt like this was a, I don't think that it took away from the predator type mythology that's already been built because we
18:20
[SPEAKER_05]: what it was from the very beginning of the film, I think it's just the film is given subtle and sometimes really overt background information into the culture of the yapture, right?
18:38
[SPEAKER_05]: And I found that to be really great because I've hated them throughout every film.
18:47
[SPEAKER_05]: I've hated them and I thought they were opied, you know, protagonist because they were so advanced, much more advanced than anyone else, right?
18:57
[SPEAKER_05]: And to see that kind of flipped was really refreshing for me to see one of them not have the tools of the trade readily available and have to survive on more than just a technology.
19:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
19:16
[SPEAKER_05]: I really like that part of the film.
19:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
19:19
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I mean, I hate the predators.
19:21
[SPEAKER_05]: I don't like them.
19:22
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, so they chose to set this the furthest into the future of any of the alien and predator movies.
19:29
[SPEAKER_01]: So that gives them a lot of like it.
19:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
19:32
[SPEAKER_01]: that gives them a lot of freedom, of course.
19:35
[SPEAKER_01]: But also they are building on, you know, you can see Dan Traktorberg is cooking up something like when he's asked about in interviews, he has ideas, but all the large drops and killer of killers, and you know, how does that tie into here?
19:49
[SPEAKER_01]: He's clearly pooling from a bigger story and has a bigger story in mind and, you know,
19:58
[SPEAKER_01]: we have every reason to believe that we might be building toward a new crossover that's hopefully will make people happier.
20:05
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that's something I thought about too.
20:06
[SPEAKER_00]: I had some critique of how some of that iconography and character types were used or employed in the story that I disagree with as well.
20:19
[SPEAKER_00]: Not to be overly purist because obviously the future or
20:26
[SPEAKER_00]: key tonal shifts of how things were used and portrayed that I didn't find satisfying.
20:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, all right.
20:36
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I'm looking forward to getting into it.
20:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Can I ask what do you think the Pocula rating would be for physical and emotional violence?
20:45
[SPEAKER_01]: So I've seen, there was a controversy before this came out where it was rated PG-13 and people are like, man, we don't want to put it in a movie if it's not rated R and they're, and Dan track the lyrics like, listen, we're using alien blood and synth blood.
20:59
[SPEAKER_01]: So we can get away with more, don't worry about it.
21:02
[SPEAKER_00]: it's interesting that makes sense.
21:03
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because there's no human beings.
21:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
21:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
21:07
[SPEAKER_01]: So we do think is the peculiarating.
21:10
[SPEAKER_00]: It's funny because it's not it's a lot of set piece stuff, you know, it's it's not surprising.
21:17
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's a five.
21:20
[SPEAKER_01]: But I would say like emotionally, it's like a normal part of a movie.
21:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a warm hug of a movie.
21:26
[SPEAKER_01]: I would even, I don't know that it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like, I don't know if it's like
21:45
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there is a hopefulness to it.
21:47
[SPEAKER_00]: There is a, it's a helpunk hero.
21:50
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, it is.
21:51
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a helpunk.
21:52
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a hero overcoming and going on the journey and coming back victorious.
21:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I have to say my theater experience was, I watched it.
22:05
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess it was not opening day, but shortly thereafter, and I watched it in Dolby, so it was a big theater with hundreds of people.
22:12
[SPEAKER_01]: And no one else was laughing as much as me.
22:14
[SPEAKER_01]: So, like, maybe it just particularly took my funny bow, because sometimes I worry that like, I don't have,
22:22
[SPEAKER_01]: that I'm humorless because other things that people think are hilarious, I'm like, I don't know, that doesn't make me laugh at all, but this movie makes me laugh over and over, and there's just like all these blank or you'll miss it, gags, like there's just one point like Thia who is a sin, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she,
22:40
[SPEAKER_01]: She just does this way on her eyeballs so that the security scanner can get a clue.
22:45
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't just like the way Elfanne delivers this, the way that directed and yeah, written, I just think this movie is hilarious and I love it.
22:56
[SPEAKER_00]: the audience and my theater, there's about a dozen people for the matinee and there was a group of four or five people and they were, they were yuckin it up and haven't had time, they really were into it and got it.
23:08
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't hear anybody grumbling or, you know, making any of those kinds of prizes.
23:13
[SPEAKER_00]: And then every
23:14
[SPEAKER_00]: podcast I've listened to, you know, other podcasters talking about it.
23:18
[SPEAKER_00]: I've, you know, listened to, I'm like, well, I need to find other people who agree with my take on it that I don't like the movie.
23:25
[SPEAKER_00]: And I could, I found news satisfaction.
23:28
[SPEAKER_00]: No, it seems like you're out.
23:31
[SPEAKER_00]: Why?
23:32
[SPEAKER_00]: I am the outlier in this case, and it's made a lot of money and even this sort of NPR culture-critic key type people have been enjoying it, you know, let alone the ringer or bald move or anybody else.
23:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's into this movie, and so I'm just over here eaten my salad without any dressing on it.
23:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so in terms of ratings, it's definitely on the like the leaning positive sign on Rotten Tomatoes 86% from Critics 95% from audiences, Metacritic 70% yeah, yeah, yeah, especially it's it's a little more temperate on Metacritic 71% from from rate of Critics and 6.1 from audiences 7.5 on
24:19
[SPEAKER_00]: a little snooty over there a bit of critical.
24:22
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm being said.
24:23
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I mean, they measure it differently, so it's always lower.
24:26
[SPEAKER_01]: 7.5 and IMDB, which is pretty high.
24:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Ah, that is high tools.
24:31
[SPEAKER_01]: It's solid, it's solid.
24:32
[SPEAKER_01]: 3.6 and on letterbox, which is same as, yeah, solid, solid, solid.
24:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, solid.
24:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
24:39
[SPEAKER_01]: I would say on letterbox, a four is phenomenal.
24:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Upper threes is very good.
24:45
[SPEAKER_03]: I could.
24:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Really good.
24:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
24:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
24:48
[SPEAKER_01]: And as you said, you know, it's done quite well.
24:50
[SPEAKER_01]: The so far, the budget was 105 million the reported budget so far.
24:56
[SPEAKER_01]: It's been out two weekends.
24:58
[SPEAKER_01]: It made, and I'll just say we are going to record this in two parts.
25:01
[SPEAKER_01]: So I might check back in with the box office in the second part to see how it is.
25:06
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's made as of Monday, November 17th.
25:09
[SPEAKER_01]: It's made 136 million.
25:12
[SPEAKER_01]: So it did drop the second weekend, and you know, you get the usual hyperbolic headlines about like, oh, it dropped 60% to 60% Yeah, but now you see me three, now you can see we're whatever, you know, that that card trick in the movie.
25:30
[SPEAKER_01]: It did surprisingly well actually at the box.
25:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm running man did not do as well as expected.
25:40
[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see, I think that because of all of the positive reviews, this one has longevity, so it'll be interesting to check back in on the box office after this coming weekend.
25:53
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
25:54
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I think I don't think from a studio standpoint, they cannot be disappointed with this.
25:58
[SPEAKER_00]: No way.
25:59
[SPEAKER_00]: No, they're not.
26:00
[SPEAKER_00]: Definitely not.
26:01
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
26:01
[UNKNOWN]: No way.
26:01
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that really, your only is ever as good as your last movie, and Trachtenburg has put out three solid movies.
26:13
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think he's really, you know, giving himself the space to be able to make a movie.
26:19
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a much bigger budget, much bigger set piece.
26:21
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot more going on than prey.
26:24
[SPEAKER_00]: What was going on?
26:25
[SPEAKER_00]: So you could feel it.
26:26
[SPEAKER_00]: You could feel the on-screen, the money
26:31
[SPEAKER_01]: right and now because I mean pray was kind of like a test because the predator we didn't talk much about that one and are opening but that's the bad one.
26:39
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the bad one.
26:41
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean I think it's kind of it's another one where I'm like it's stupid bad but I don't hate watching it regardless.
26:47
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's bad right.
26:50
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah you go to the fast food restaurant from touch time right you get some you know greasy fries or whatever.
26:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And everyone was so excited about it because it was done by Shane Black, who was in the original predator and has done a lot of movies that people love, but this one was just a mess, just a million mess.
27:08
[SPEAKER_01]: And so, yeah, so this pre-movie, of course, it was also really like during the pandemic and all that, but it was just released straight to, to Disney Plus, yeah, or Hulu, or whatever, depending on where you are.
27:23
[SPEAKER_01]: and it was kind of a test in ways.
27:26
[SPEAKER_01]: And then it was like, whoa, that did well.
27:28
[SPEAKER_01]: And now in Dan Trachtonberg has built the name where I think, you know, he's allowed to really shape the future of this franchise.
27:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
27:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Does he want to have you, have you read any of that stuff?
27:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, yeah, I mean, people are always asking him an interview.
27:42
[SPEAKER_01]: So like, we don't want to pigeonhole you into predators.
27:44
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
27:45
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't worry.
27:45
[SPEAKER_01]: I have ideas.
27:47
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm pigeonhole, the color of the pigeonhole.
27:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
27:50
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, just put a cowboy hat on me and call me.
27:53
[SPEAKER_01]: Finally, Disney Reference.
27:59
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, so I, yeah, I think.
28:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And now they've gone to, they've invented this whole conline or constructed language from the Yalcho, Yalcho, whatever.
28:10
[SPEAKER_01]: There's some fun things from that that I just wanted to point out, because you know, I got to do a little linguistics mini deep dive.
28:19
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's, it's so cool.
28:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Just I love how they do these conlines, how they,
28:25
[SPEAKER_01]: how they influence and reflect the culture that they're building the language for.
28:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And I want to shout out Jessica shared a great L.A. Times article that some of this information comes from and some of this just comes from interviews with Dent Tractenberg and interviews with the linguist Britain Watkins.
28:42
[SPEAKER_01]: He's the one who did this language.
28:44
[SPEAKER_01]: And, um,
28:45
[SPEAKER_01]: It was originally based on Polynesian, or more specifically Hawaiian vocabulary, and it seems like the reason for that is they had to keep in mind the fact that the voucha don't have lips.
29:00
[SPEAKER_01]: So the voucha can't make the sounds that you need lips for, so that's great.
29:09
[SPEAKER_01]: So I guess the Polynesian languages have less of those, have less consonants in general.
29:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so what they did instead is they form complex consonant clusters.
29:19
[SPEAKER_01]: So like that, I opened with that, that greeting, uh, kind of, kind of, T, which I, I'm not sure I'm saying it correctly.
29:28
[SPEAKER_01]: But like it starts with a GK, which is like a, you know, like that, um, more sounds like the starter car from Dune.
29:36
[SPEAKER_01]: She's the sound of it.
29:38
[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, we've seen the runic writing, and I think the sound matches the runic writing, but it now they've done the whole grammatical thing, and so you can start to learn this language, you can start to pick it apart, even watching it a second time.
29:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Just know that the word order, they do object verb subjects, which is different from pollination, but it means like instead of
30:04
[SPEAKER_01]: store, go to I, you know.
30:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
30:10
[SPEAKER_01]: And, and they keep the vocabulary simple because the youture or practical, so, for instance, Chish means I and me.
30:18
[SPEAKER_01]: So, if you listen in the movie, you'll hear a lot of things and with Chish because the subjects at the end, or you listen and guy is for all negative.
30:28
[SPEAKER_01]: So, no, it's actually how they say it.
30:30
[SPEAKER_01]: No, you'll hear over and over and like it just means whatever is negative.
30:36
[SPEAKER_01]: There's no gendered stuff, you know, like like in French or Spanish or whatever.
30:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
30:41
[SPEAKER_01]: And there, but there is a version of formal versus informal speak, you know, like in French, you have two versus boo, here it's instead of informal informal, it's respectful or insulting.
30:54
[SPEAKER_01]: If I say doubt to you, I'm being respectful, if I say wool, I'm insulting you.
31:01
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, it's my area.
31:02
[SPEAKER_05]: It's one or the other.
31:03
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm out there speaking up to you or down to you.
31:07
[SPEAKER_05]: Well, I like that a lot.
31:08
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm gonna have more prey than my daily.
31:10
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, they're, they're a very practical, literal people like the this exchange from where deck offers the a meet to one point she's sent she says, oh no thanks.
31:22
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't eat, but that's very sweet and he says this flesh is not sweet.
31:27
[SPEAKER_01]: It's good to know.
31:28
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, that's, um,
31:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Totally signed me up for four youture classes right after.
31:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, you know, I could see Abbie going into this.
31:38
[SPEAKER_01]: She's the one who learns like Valerian and stuff like that.
31:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Cool.
31:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Fun.
31:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I like that they're thinking all the way down to the physiology because that's a really important part about how sounds are made.
31:52
[SPEAKER_00]: Realizing the lips, air, throat, right, you know, all of that.
31:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
31:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, did you guys have any more spoiler free thoughts for this opening section?
32:03
[SPEAKER_00]: I will say for the outlier guy.
32:07
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not, I just want to make sure that people know that I'm not making it.
32:12
[SPEAKER_00]: If I just do, you're going to be outlier guy, OG.
32:17
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I don't want to yuck anybody's yumt.
32:20
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to, you know, not, you know.
32:25
[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, I did, well, we'll get it told.
32:28
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's make it to the movie.
32:29
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
32:29
[SPEAKER_00]: When we get into the details, but I do want to say that another predator movie got made to tune in a calendar year, yeah, come on, right?
32:39
[SPEAKER_00]: That's cool, you know, alien Earth season two, uh, green lit, let's do it, right?
32:44
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like, bring it on.
32:45
[SPEAKER_00]: I would rather you take some swings.
32:47
[SPEAKER_00]: And just because it missed on me doesn't mean that you should stop.
32:51
[SPEAKER_05]: Stop taking those things.
32:52
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, keep swinging, right?
32:53
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, keep keep going and let's see what happens.
32:57
[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess you're pleased in that regard.
33:00
[SPEAKER_05]: Unless you're casting Star Lord.
33:03
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm happy with the casting and I'm glad also that they brought in to play deck.
33:16
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about him, but they brought in New Zealand.
33:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't know what his background is to be honest, but I think he's pretty fresh to this industry.
33:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And he had to apparently go through the ringer, like, in addition, because the physicality, there's so much physicality to play.
33:37
[SPEAKER_01]: And any ability to speak the yout to language and all this.
33:40
[SPEAKER_01]: So he went through jump through a lot of hoops and they really, they're like, we're not going for a name, we're going for someone who can do this job.
33:47
[SPEAKER_05]: Can I just say one thing really quickly to that?
33:50
[SPEAKER_05]: Just I really appreciated that this first, he was new.
33:54
[SPEAKER_05]: Right to actor that played the character.
33:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Demetrous and there's a long double last name.
33:58
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I can't do the last thing.
34:01
[SPEAKER_05]: But I just want more of that.
34:03
[SPEAKER_05]: We don't need to see the same rotation.
34:06
[SPEAKER_05]: I let me just say I don't want to see the same rotating cast of actors playing different roles in different franchises.
34:13
[SPEAKER_05]: And everybody fan casting the same actor from one film or one franchise to another film and another franchise.
34:23
[SPEAKER_05]: open the door for new faces.
34:25
[SPEAKER_05]: Right, and hopefully we get more of that.
34:28
[SPEAKER_01]: And I just want to say his name is Demetrius Schuster, Colola, Coloa, Montanguy.
34:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was going to try it.
34:36
[SPEAKER_00]: New Zealand actor.
34:38
[SPEAKER_00]: And he was like, yeah, he's a young man.
34:40
[SPEAKER_00]: So cool for him.
34:41
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's got a 33-pound suit in the carrying.
34:45
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, as well.
34:46
[SPEAKER_01]: They helped, they have a head of sling for her legs because the self-hanning actually does have legs for the entire movie secret.
34:53
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple times that caught.
34:55
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
34:56
[SPEAKER_00]: When things are going on, but good for him, right?
34:59
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, yeah, like you say, John, where's our next generation?
35:03
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like, get these folks up, like get them in and get them up and get what an amazing experience for him.
35:10
[SPEAKER_00]: He gets to take on an iconic role.
35:14
[SPEAKER_00]: and bring something new to the game.
35:17
[SPEAKER_00]: Good for him.
35:18
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, there's two more of that.
35:20
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, without the makeup, obviously.
35:23
[SPEAKER_05]: Let's see.
35:24
[SPEAKER_05]: Let's see.
35:24
[SPEAKER_05]: Make it no make a face, right?
35:26
[SPEAKER_01]: Go.
35:26
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
35:27
[SPEAKER_05]: Let's do that.
35:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Why do like how that with what they did with the makeup is they did leave his face unexposed.
35:33
[SPEAKER_01]: And then of course they added CGI over it with amendments and everything.
35:36
[SPEAKER_01]: But it gave him more freeness of facial expressions.
35:41
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, and you definitely felt that.
35:43
[SPEAKER_00]: I definitely felt that there was less alienness and a more, you could connect to the character more.
35:53
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember in the first movie, the first time that we actually see when it takes out.
35:57
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, like, wow, we were all waiting on the whole movie.
36:01
[SPEAKER_00]: It was beautiful.
36:02
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was nightmare for you all.
36:03
[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, oh my God, did you see that?
36:05
[SPEAKER_00]: So it was really, really smart development for that.
36:08
[SPEAKER_00]: And now it's just like, oh, yeah, that's just what they're.
36:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just go.
36:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that is I appreciate the OG movie just for having, having invented this whole concept.
36:21
[SPEAKER_05]: Mm-hmm.
36:21
[SPEAKER_05]: I still want to know the dreads, though.
36:23
[SPEAKER_05]: Mm-hmm.
36:23
[SPEAKER_05]: I still need to know what's over the dreads.
36:25
[SPEAKER_05]: What's up with the dreads?
36:26
[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
36:26
[SPEAKER_05]: I still need to know that.
36:27
[SPEAKER_05]: Some might maybe explain that to me in some future.
36:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Tentacles, I suppose.
36:31
[SPEAKER_05]: Something.
36:31
[SPEAKER_05]: Okay.
36:31
[SPEAKER_05]: Give me an explanation.
36:33
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
36:37
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
36:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
36:39
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
36:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we'll take a quick break for the audience along or break on our side of the mics.
36:44
[SPEAKER_01]: And then when we come back, we're going to break down the movie overall.
36:49
[SPEAKER_01]: See you guys in the other side.
37:03
[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody, future editor David jumping in here.
37:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, my life schedule has changed a little bit and I am not able to join Jean and Alicia with covering the rest of the movie.
37:18
[SPEAKER_00]: I apologize for that.
37:19
[SPEAKER_00]: On the same time, I kind of was feeling bad because I don't know that I had a lot positive to say.
37:26
[SPEAKER_00]: And I know a lot of people enjoy this movie and I want everyone to enjoy this movie.
37:30
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to be the the negative one on the podcast.
37:34
[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, I'm just glad that this movie was made and I look forward to future track and bird offerings and future predator movies.
37:42
[SPEAKER_00]: So here are Jean and Alicia continuing their conversation.
37:48
[SPEAKER_00]: Have a great holidays everyone.
37:49
[SPEAKER_00]: Talk to you soon.
37:53
[SPEAKER_01]: And we're back from that day's long break actually and I think you just heard a recording from David.
38:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, David, for producing this still that he's not joining us for the back end, but Jean and I are about to have a very full conversation.
38:11
[SPEAKER_01]: We've got lots of thoughts.
38:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Some critique, but lots of positive thoughts, right?
38:15
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, definitely definitely some critiques, but you know, I'm going to leave the hatred to the hate.
38:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we both like this, maybe.
38:25
[SPEAKER_01]: I did say I would do a box office check in.
38:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Now it's only been a few days.
38:28
[SPEAKER_01]: So we are now one day into the third weekend.
38:32
[SPEAKER_01]: So not much has changed.
38:34
[SPEAKER_01]: It's now up to one, 40 million.
38:37
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's, yeah, I think it's going to have, yeah, it's solid.
38:41
[SPEAKER_01]: It's more than it's made up back.
38:43
[SPEAKER_01]: It's only two and a half weekends in and it's more than made back.
38:47
[SPEAKER_01]: It's budget.
38:48
[SPEAKER_01]: So we're doing good.
38:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, but now, to the time to full spoilers, get into what actually happens in the movie itself.
39:00
[SPEAKER_01]: And let's start with where the film starts.
39:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about the brother brawl, and I have a featuring pop of the prick.
39:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Don't touch.
39:10
[SPEAKER_01]: What did you think about this opening to the movie?
39:14
[SPEAKER_05]: I kind of liked it, you know, the thing is like I said before, I don't like the predator, I don't like the yawshah, right?
39:24
[SPEAKER_05]: I don't like them because in every movie that I've seen,
39:29
[SPEAKER_05]: they've been ridiculously opied against the prey that they they lent their super, super far, far more fast than anything that they come up against and I've always felt like I hated these guys because of them.
39:50
[SPEAKER_05]: It's not until really I started reading some comics lately because they have a lot of, you know, predator versus the Marvel universe, predator versus, you know, black Panther and where they're going up against other super powered individuals or technology, people who have, you know, surpass technology from what we have in the movies that I started to change my tone.
40:15
[SPEAKER_05]: because I can see them going up against individuals and species who can match them for a firepower for firepower.
40:26
[SPEAKER_05]: So watching this open with the brothers was really interesting because it took me
40:33
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, out of, oh, I hate these, these people, I hate this species, you know, I found myself, you know, looking at deck and wondering, you know, hmm, why is he so small?
40:51
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, it just took me by surprise because I wasn't expecting that.
40:56
[SPEAKER_05]: And it made me start to wonder immediately what the differences between deck and the others of his species would be.
41:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
41:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
41:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we open with that quote from the Youta Codex, which I mean, seems like they kind of numbered in the sense that it looks almost like a Bible code.
41:18
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I suppose that sort of there, they're, they're code of conduct at least.
41:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And so that sets up the mindset that you've seen in previous times.
41:33
[SPEAKER_01]: And the whole, as far as the whole OP thing, there's a lot of fans have had a lot of tongue-in-create and cheek critique about the fact that they, you know, they use these cloaking devices and is the cloaking device cheating.
41:47
[SPEAKER_01]: They're all about honor and affair fights, but they're using advanced technology that they're not providing to the person they're fighting against.
41:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it is an interesting take to have one who's have the perspective of a member of the Ocha or not quite actually because he's not finished his hunt.
42:08
[SPEAKER_01]: He can't call himself Yogyat, he doesn't get his cloaking device, so he's out of disadvantage because of that because he doesn't have full access to the predator technology, but also as you said, he's
42:20
[SPEAKER_01]: smaller than expected and they at the beginning uh... dendracht and burger actually was going to make him blind and that he had a special mask and stuff and then he was going to lose it at some point but then he's like okay we got a streamlined this idea here um...
42:36
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, for me, I can understand why it's upending the usual predator movie expectations.
42:45
[SPEAKER_01]: And I consider that a good thing, but I can also see why fans of the classic films are uncomfortable with it.
42:52
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I think overall for me, I think it's a good thing.
42:54
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I like this separation, this underdog.
43:03
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, point of view that we never get with the predator, really.
43:08
[SPEAKER_05]: And previous films.
43:10
[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
43:11
[SPEAKER_05]: It's always done.
43:12
[SPEAKER_05]: The underdog has always been us.
43:14
[SPEAKER_05]: And I think when I say us, I mean humanity.
43:16
[SPEAKER_05]: So I think it's easier to root for the underdog that doesn't look like the predator.
43:25
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, doesn't look like the person that we've grown accustomed to hunting humans.
43:31
[SPEAKER_05]: It's not as easy to root for deck because, why?
43:39
[SPEAKER_05]: He's got the man of all the stuff.
43:42
[SPEAKER_05]: And just given the history that we have in the films, why root for deck?
43:48
[SPEAKER_05]: Which I think it makes a compelling story to give us a reason that I felt that I could root for him actually.
43:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
43:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, so I noticed that my favorites among the prior films often include team ups.
44:02
[SPEAKER_01]: So, in Alien vs.
44:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Predators, sorry, spoiler for these old Predator films, they've been out for a long time now.
44:09
[SPEAKER_01]: But Alien vs.
44:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Predator, for example, has the Yaucha teaming up with a human, which that story came more or less directly from the comics more than I think most.
44:19
[SPEAKER_01]: And then predators, we see, that's the one with Adrian Brody, we see a brief moment of team-up between human and predator.
44:29
[SPEAKER_01]: And also in predators and the next one, the predator, we see evidence of different groups of youtcha fighting each other.
44:37
[SPEAKER_01]: That the larger ones are hunting the smaller ones.
44:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So those were concepts I was really excited about and wanted to see played out more, and that's exactly what this movie does.
44:49
[SPEAKER_01]: So, where would you rather live?
44:53
[SPEAKER_01]: Youture Prime, which we see in the beginning, this sort of barren planet, or space Australia, which is called Ghana, the death planet?
45:03
[SPEAKER_05]: The death planet.
45:06
[SPEAKER_01]: You'd rather live on the death planet than even though the Youture are more afraid of that than their own barren planet?
45:13
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I think, you know, if I'm just dropped off,
45:19
[SPEAKER_05]: with no knowledge.
45:22
[SPEAKER_05]: If I'm like Chris, who's been dropped off to salvation, right?
45:28
[SPEAKER_05]: It's a piece of reference for those who don't know.
45:31
[SPEAKER_05]: And I'm totally new to me, then probably y'all shall prime.
45:39
[SPEAKER_05]: Maybe.
45:41
[SPEAKER_05]: because there's less danger, you know what the danger is right away, you know what I mean?
45:48
[SPEAKER_05]: Um, but to say let's say it.
45:51
[SPEAKER_05]: I've spent countless years or my tribe or my people have been on the death planet for many, many centuries.
46:06
[SPEAKER_05]: I think I would rather that because we would have adapted to the planet and it's a much more beautiful planet to look at.
46:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
46:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
46:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
46:13
[SPEAKER_01]: It is a very pretty planet.
46:16
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think like I would love to live on Gena if I had a theater to show me around.
46:23
[SPEAKER_01]: If you like don't walk through that grass, okay?
46:26
[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
46:26
[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
46:26
[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
46:27
[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
46:27
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, you just can't drop on death planet and be okay.
46:32
[SPEAKER_05]: I would rather, you know, evolutionary wise, beyond you.
46:39
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
46:41
[SPEAKER_01]: I do like how they open the algebraic bits where in prey we saw over kind of a section of the movie, we saw this sequence of, we saw this, oh, sorry, wait, I got to do the thing.
46:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, what is?
46:56
[SPEAKER_04]: Enter.
46:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, in prey, there's a section of the movie where we see play out, uh, the prey being chased by larger and larger predators, you know, and to start this, we get like a fast sequence where it just predator eating prey over and over just kind of calling back to that.
47:17
[SPEAKER_01]: I like that.
47:18
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that was that was cool, that was cool.
47:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And I liked how this started with action, but it established the firm foundation for this brotherhood.
47:33
[SPEAKER_01]: You really understand why he's upset that he loses his brother because yes, they're fighting the way to members of the species would fight each other to train.
47:41
[SPEAKER_01]: But you see that Quay, his brother, is really training him while they fight.
47:45
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he's telling him, don't fight like our father.
47:49
[SPEAKER_01]: You are a different size.
47:50
[SPEAKER_01]: You are a different person.
47:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Find your own style and strengths that work for you as an individual.
47:57
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's something that, you know, he really sets him up in addition to literally saving his life.
48:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, he sets him up for the rest of the movie with that.
48:07
[SPEAKER_05]: And I think what I appreciated about that set up was to show the bond that the brothers had, right?
48:19
[SPEAKER_05]: I don't think the rest of the movie works without that.
48:23
[SPEAKER_05]: To me, there's no sense in this movie playing out the way that it plays out is we don't have that part.
48:30
[SPEAKER_05]: Because, you know, it's very much about, to me, it's much about family and finding your people, right?
48:41
[SPEAKER_05]: Which that is trying to find, is trying to grasp, to, you know, hold on to and trying to get.
48:50
[SPEAKER_05]: recognition to be included in the family, but his brother already sees on our family.
48:56
[SPEAKER_05]: You know what I mean?
48:57
[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
48:57
[SPEAKER_05]: So there's a definite, it doesn't work or fight that part.
49:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
49:03
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's also that contrast between the two sets of siblings, if you know, those conversation, Arthia and Tessa actually siblings.
49:12
[SPEAKER_01]: And at the end of the day, Quay was really willing to give his life for his brother.
49:17
[SPEAKER_01]: And Tessa was always going to choose herself in the end.
49:21
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's this commentary of it's not about who's blood or not.
49:25
[SPEAKER_01]: It's about who is really going to put themselves in the line for you.
49:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I just want to point out a, when we saw inside Quay's trophy room, we saw a dinosaur skull.
49:36
[SPEAKER_01]: So, do we want to see a predator's versus dinosaur movie and how soon?
49:43
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm going to say no.
49:46
[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, I don't know.
49:50
[SPEAKER_05]: No, no, no, I don't want to.
49:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Did you answer him?
49:53
[SPEAKER_01]: He writes over.
49:53
[SPEAKER_01]: We'd never knew we wanted.
49:56
[SPEAKER_05]: Ah, no, it's not a, it's not fair.
49:58
[SPEAKER_05]: It won't, it wouldn't be fair.
50:01
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they're a lot bigger.
50:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're not a smart, but maybe in this, maybe we are underestimating the intelligence of dinosaurs in this movie is going to show us.
50:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Man, no.
50:13
[SPEAKER_05]: No, negative, no, I'm not going for that one.
50:18
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
50:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Listeners, tell John that we need a predator's versus dinosaur.
50:26
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
50:27
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
50:27
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
50:27
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
50:27
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
50:28
[SPEAKER_01]: But I like in the Trevor room how they set up, for example, that whole quote unquote toy, that the freezing toy, that sets up the rest of the movie.
50:38
[SPEAKER_01]: This movie does a good job of introducing things in a fun way, memorable way, and then repeating them just enough so that by the time it comes to play in the conclusion, yeah, it feels inevitable.
50:50
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.
50:53
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
50:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and yeah, we get obviously the whole idea is choose your prey and come home with it or not at all.
51:02
[SPEAKER_01]: That's part of that whole predator codex, I suppose, and deck, of course, wants to overcompensate by choosing something even as father is afraid of the quote unquote unkillable colisc from Ghana.
51:15
[SPEAKER_01]: But before he gets to go after it, uh,
51:19
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, why won't he just let his son go hunt?
51:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Why does he have to try to force his brother to kill him?
51:26
[SPEAKER_01]: Like let him go on the hunt.
51:27
[SPEAKER_01]: If he dies, he dies.
51:28
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, because, man, some fathers are terrible.
51:35
[SPEAKER_05]: That's the bottom line.
51:38
[SPEAKER_05]: Unfortunately, there are some who should not be parents.
51:43
[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're trying to kill your children, that might be you.
51:49
[SPEAKER_05]: And their fathers should not be a parent.
51:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
51:53
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I just think, aside from the fact that Quay literally saved his life, I think that Quay choosing deck over their father and over his own life even really set stack up to think maybe there's something off about our ways.
52:13
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he really, he gets that chance in the end.
52:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Does he grab a weapon to save himself?
52:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Or does he grab the control panel on his severed arm to send deck off to relative safely?
52:26
[SPEAKER_01]: He's adding him to the death planet, but at least, it's not his father would give you death, yeah.
52:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
52:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it is just the whole y'all to thinking going in is helping others as weakness, grief is weakness,
52:43
[SPEAKER_01]: If that's what you're brought up, leaving.
52:47
[SPEAKER_05]: Not only your brought up, believe in, but your brought up wanting, you know, because if you think any other way, you will be shunned.
52:57
[SPEAKER_05]: Mm-hmm.
52:57
[SPEAKER_05]: And it's um, that's the thing, man, people, you know, nature versus nurture is always the thing, right?
53:06
[SPEAKER_05]: Like, are you born this way or are you raised this way?
53:11
[SPEAKER_05]: Mm-hmm.
53:13
[SPEAKER_05]: This is the perfect example, because I always thought predators were, you know, like genetically imprinted to be assholes, to be killers, right?
53:28
[SPEAKER_05]: But this is imperative, some sort, you know, and quite literally, and frankly, we watch
53:42
[SPEAKER_01]: And then so we go to get the death planet and the predators use this as a hunting zone of way too.
53:52
[SPEAKER_01]: So you didn't get to see the predators one with Adrian Brody from 20.
53:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, you watch it, watch it, watch it.
54:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
54:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
54:01
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I feel like that one was in some ways a practice run for this.
54:06
[SPEAKER_01]: I might as well have an impact.
54:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Like they had that nice sky shot, but although I'm not sure about the physics of that sky shot, but they had, yeah, but then the rest just looks like normal human jungle because they didn't have this crazy CGI legit this one.
54:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
54:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Although I think they did a mix of practical and CGI for this.
54:25
[SPEAKER_01]: They did.
54:26
[SPEAKER_01]: The VFX are very good.
54:28
[SPEAKER_01]: That's my opinion.
54:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I loved the design as you said this planet's really gorgeous.
54:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Like I loved how they had those, the mountains have these pointy tops that are kind of curving toward each other.
54:39
[SPEAKER_01]: So like, arching through the broken arcs through the sky, like arches.
54:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
54:46
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's yet.
54:47
[SPEAKER_01]: A lot more life here, a lot more verdant than y'all to prime.
54:50
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
54:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk through some of the important flora and fauna, which if we get introduced to it throughout and then in true predator movie fashion, the protagonist of the movie has to learn to use these surroundings to win in the end basically.
55:07
[SPEAKER_01]: So we're used to prized once we saw what a Luna bug was because she was warning
55:14
[SPEAKER_05]: Yes, I was, I mentioned this earlier, but the creature designs for this movie were fucking spectacular, downright spectacular, like this is nightmare fuel for 10 year old me.
55:36
[SPEAKER_05]: Right.
55:37
[SPEAKER_05]: This is they would just don't so well and so alien but you're familiar.
55:44
[SPEAKER_05]: Right?
55:46
[SPEAKER_05]: Mm-hmm.
55:46
[SPEAKER_05]: Just really, really.
55:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and again, I love like we see deck running from these tentacles grabbing him but we have no idea what they're attached to or that this is the little bug until they're in this fight.
55:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
56:00
[SPEAKER_01]: What was your favorite creature design?
56:05
[SPEAKER_05]: Let me think about it, I come back to you with it.
56:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, all right, all right, I'm going to run through a few more of them here.
56:10
[SPEAKER_01]: So we have that slug like creature in the plant that picks he picks it up and it grows glowing bubbles and then he throws it and it explodes and I love Dex face when it explodes.
56:23
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, that's going to be useful.
56:26
[SPEAKER_01]: It's good to know.
56:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Good to know.
56:29
[SPEAKER_01]: And then that field of the exploding spike plants
56:34
[SPEAKER_01]: That was cool.
56:35
[SPEAKER_01]: There was some sort of Terrodacto looking things called cultures.
56:39
[SPEAKER_01]: that at least, the occult vultures.
56:43
[SPEAKER_01]: The occult, those, okay, she called them, I think something like E-Bray Inquise, but they're the flying snake-like things that spit acid and they like snacks.
56:55
[SPEAKER_01]: You can catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.
56:59
[SPEAKER_01]: And of course the bone bison that gets awesomely salt and half and later becomes dex mask.
57:06
[SPEAKER_01]: and the razor grass.
57:07
[SPEAKER_05]: I was tentatively waiting to see if any of the alien creatures showed up in this fell from like anything or something.
57:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I suppose it's just none of none of the creatures from this planet were there but that would have been cool and I
57:25
[SPEAKER_01]: I have a feeling that probably cautious about it, but the success of Alien Earth and the Alien, you know, Romulus movies, and the success of these Dan tracks, Berg movies, I feel like when Dan tracks in Berg is asked questions about this.
57:43
[SPEAKER_01]: He kind of in interviews.
57:45
[SPEAKER_01]: He kind of looks like the cat that ate the canary, and I wonder if
57:49
[SPEAKER_01]: He knows that there are plans to start.
57:52
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, just the fact that he could use Whale and Utani in this for the sense.
57:57
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that they realize it is time to attempt again across over.
58:02
[SPEAKER_05]: That would be, yeah, I think now is the time.
58:06
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, now is the time.
58:08
[SPEAKER_01]: By the way, sorry for any strange sounds you might hear.
58:11
[SPEAKER_01]: We might have heard me talk about another podcast how I've developed a cat infancy infestation behind my mic.
58:18
[SPEAKER_01]: So we have white furry one now, who's making them.
58:24
[SPEAKER_05]: Right, they make cast kind of live.
58:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, this is, this is like, they discover, you know, we've lived in this house for a long time, and they still discover new spaces.
58:36
[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, oh, yeah.
58:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Speaking of discovering new spaces, so we already talked about the fact how Dex has and have the usual predator equipment, but he does have his unfolding plasma sword, his bow and wrist gauntlets with the Cheriken, would what would be your go-to?
59:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Because then we see him also at the end of the movie, and he has one of those staffs that double opens, would be your go-to predator weapon.
59:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
59:09
[SPEAKER_05]: The staff in the, in the comments, I would, I would wheel those two.
59:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I always wanted to, um, I always wanted to, uh, learn how to fight with a staff actually.
59:20
[SPEAKER_05]: Hello, I think you have the staff, the staff definitely.
59:23
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm inspired especially by, yeah, inspired especially by Matt from a wheel of time.
59:28
[SPEAKER_05]: I didn't think about how to, I was more think of Charlotte monks.
59:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the book, like the TV version was fun too, but especially the book version made such an impression of me when the fix of the staffing kicks those princess asses anyway.
59:48
[SPEAKER_05]: That was good, that was good.
59:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
59:50
[SPEAKER_01]: I always think, because I'm short, like Dick, so I always think a staff would be good because it gives more, it just helps me.
59:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
59:59
[SPEAKER_01]: I want to be able to hit them without them hitting me.
1:00:02
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, you come mind to staff with the risk on it, man.
1:00:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and the other thing that I appreciate about predators is that they need to have a certain herbal knowledge about wherever they go, because we see once he lands, he has this arm wound, he figures out the local plants he needs and applies a pulse list to his arm.
1:00:27
[SPEAKER_01]: movies.
1:00:28
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
1:00:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:00:30
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm hoping with the T's at the end of his mother coming.
1:00:33
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm hoping we learn more about, yeah, the background, rearing education.
1:00:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:00:40
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I just have to shout out especially appreciation for Dmitrius Schuster Coloa Montanglise.
1:00:48
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm getting better at it.
1:00:50
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just such a thing.
1:00:52
[SPEAKER_05]: And I'm still not attempting it.
1:00:55
[SPEAKER_01]: You can say Dmitrius SK.
1:00:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's just such a physically demanding role.
1:01:01
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just absolutely.
1:01:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:01:04
[SPEAKER_01]: And I know it was also for Elfanning not quite the same because she was not the one who was doing the carrying, although there was support, as we said before, helping him carry her, but he had to wear that suit and everything too.
1:01:19
[SPEAKER_01]: But she had to play two roles, Thea and Tessa.
1:01:24
[SPEAKER_01]: What did you think of Elfanning's dual performance?
1:01:27
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I thought it was fine, I thought it was good.
1:01:34
[SPEAKER_05]: Uh, so that that was fun and I enjoyed, you know, knowing that way, the new tannies still sucks.
1:01:42
[SPEAKER_05]: And this is for a future, you know, and then this still the, you know, omnipresent, you know, booge man in this universe.
1:01:51
[SPEAKER_05]: So I, I really, um, I like that they incorporated that.
1:01:55
[SPEAKER_05]: I didn't, I don't think I needed the entire, you know, story between Tia and Tess, um,
1:02:02
[SPEAKER_05]: You know that background story for them in this movie.
1:02:07
[SPEAKER_05]: I think I thought that was too weak as part for me But yeah, I I just
1:02:14
[SPEAKER_01]: What do you mean by their background story?
1:02:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Like the fact that they did this with all of them?
1:02:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:02:19
[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, that whole sister thing.
1:02:20
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, the sister thing.
1:02:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Got it.
1:02:23
[SPEAKER_05]: OK. Yeah.
1:02:24
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it wasn't it didn't hit for me.
1:02:26
[SPEAKER_05]: That's the one part that I didn't hit for me.
1:02:31
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, but I did like the connective tissue that they had with Whalen, Utah, and in this universe.
1:02:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I, yeah, it was cool and and simple bit of bit of world building to say that this is this all synthetic research station because humans are fragile and this planet is the death planet.
1:02:54
[SPEAKER_01]: So that and that also just doing that allowed them to do the PG 13 rating as we talked about because there's no human blood.
1:03:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but I, I really, I liked, um, for me, the, the whole, the, a test of thing.
1:03:09
[SPEAKER_01]: And as I was saying in contrast with with deck and his brother, it really kind of made the movie for me in a lot of ways because,
1:03:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, so we learned that the Intessa were special, quote, I'm quote, amongst the synths, which basically means they're given more empathy to help, and the idea was to help them understand the creatures they're studying and collecting, or, you know, more specifically, it's said later to help them exploit the creatures they're studying and collecting.
1:03:38
[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, yeah, it's interesting to have that compared to deck saying sensitivity is weakness, but the and Tessa, for them, it's an asset that makes them better at their jobs.
1:03:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, they were given it as a special gift that sets them apart from the other sense.
1:03:56
[SPEAKER_01]: And, and I love just the year, she outright, she says a lot of like the theses of the movie.
1:04:03
[SPEAKER_01]: She says, I can, which maybe is on the nose, but I, it's fine.
1:04:08
[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate it.
1:04:09
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think a lot of people maybe need to hear it outright.
1:04:11
[SPEAKER_01]: She says, I can survive on my own, but who would want to survive on their own?
1:04:16
[SPEAKER_01]: and just yeah it raises all these questions like so they are twins quote-unquote or clones in a way you know they are the same presumably they have all the same code they look the same they're put more or less to the same purpose but what we learn is that tests as the one who is sent out into the field and the was the one who stayed behind in the lab so you have to
1:04:45
[SPEAKER_01]: by being out in these dangerous areas all the time and then the one time she allows Thia to go with her, which apparently is because Thia had an idea about the college and then the college could attack captains and it nearly loses at all.
1:05:01
[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know, why do you think Thia and Tessa are so they're the same models?
1:05:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Why are they so different from each other?
1:05:10
[SPEAKER_05]: That's a hard question to answer because
1:05:14
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm watching it, I thought when she's being put back together, right?
1:05:24
[SPEAKER_05]: And she's listening to who's talking to her mother, talking to somebody, talking to her.
1:05:29
[SPEAKER_05]: And she's getting the instructions about who what needs to happen.
1:05:34
[SPEAKER_05]: It's like she lost a part of the sensitivity that you're talking about.
1:05:43
[SPEAKER_05]: in that moment, which is a very relevant thing, right, she experienced a traumatic event and rather than leaning into, you know, those emotions, she hardened, very much so.
1:06:11
[SPEAKER_05]: traumatic event, but she never leaned into the hardness.
1:06:19
[SPEAKER_05]: And I think it's because she wasn't put back together by within Utah.
1:06:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
1:06:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
1:06:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:06:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Because they said they went through this.
1:06:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And
1:06:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Thia was, or sorry, Tessa was calling out for Thia as she was, you know, dismantled and turned off.
1:06:36
[SPEAKER_01]: And she ended up waking back up and wailing Utani base.
1:06:40
[SPEAKER_01]: And she's still calling out for Thia, but then immediately she's reprimanded and threatened with...
1:06:47
[SPEAKER_01]: destruction.
1:06:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, with destruction.
1:06:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Whereas yeah, whereas the ends up stuck in this vultures next for two weeks, basically.
1:06:58
[SPEAKER_01]: But when she wakes up, she gets to bond.
1:07:02
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
1:07:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And she gets to have her adventure and like, oh, I'm so excited.
1:07:05
[SPEAKER_01]: I got to hunt with the Alcha to definitely experience this after that.
1:07:10
[SPEAKER_05]: And I'm not sure if there was
1:07:15
[SPEAKER_05]: that made that switch possible.
1:07:19
[SPEAKER_05]: When, when, you know, Tesla was being put back together, did they do something other than, you know, threaten her with the mice?
1:07:28
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's more interesting if not.
1:07:30
[SPEAKER_05]: No, I agree with you, but I'm just wondering if they did.
1:07:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm.
1:07:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:07:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but then yeah, we get we get warmth between the and even though deck is a yelcha he's she lucked out because dex father would have I don't know what dex father would have done but he would have been to work with her we know we know what he would have done and he would have died with at the hands of the callus could be absolutely for refusing to work with her.
1:08:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Did you, where you, I wonder if people were bothered at all.
1:08:05
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm very used to reading subtitles.
1:08:06
[SPEAKER_01]: I like international movies.
1:08:09
[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, no, no, yeah.
1:08:10
[SPEAKER_05]: That doesn't bother me.
1:08:11
[SPEAKER_05]: I read subtitles all the time.
1:08:12
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah.
1:08:13
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's, it was probably helpful for a lot of people.
1:08:16
[SPEAKER_01]: They use, it's a trope like that.
1:08:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I turned on the Universal Translator, but it works.
1:08:21
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
1:08:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:08:23
[SPEAKER_01]: So we had the English half of the, uh, so even for the people who are not so come to work with reading subtitles, they still that.
1:08:31
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just so cool to hear the y'all chill language.
1:08:34
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, definitely.
1:08:35
[SPEAKER_05]: I appreciate it that actually.
1:08:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but I, uh, I also like she's smart enough to be like, you can use me as a tool, but she's also using him as a, as a
1:08:52
[SPEAKER_05]: they're using each other and I think they both know that and they're gonna, you know, write it out as long as they can write it out together.
1:09:00
[SPEAKER_05]: And in their process they come to rely on one another, you know?
1:09:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
1:09:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
1:09:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:09:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Classic found family.
1:09:08
[SPEAKER_05]: classic classic.
1:09:10
[SPEAKER_05]: How could you not love it?
1:09:11
[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
1:09:13
[SPEAKER_01]: But there's I also I love on the cinematic side.
1:09:16
[SPEAKER_01]: I love that shot of her where she she gets stuck to throw her his like sure couldn't think from his race gauntlet and she cuts herself out of the waltzers nest and then we just see like half of the torso from
1:09:28
[SPEAKER_01]: going flying through the air and then just off the corner of the screen.
1:09:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Just so we see her arm rising up and down and the blood splattering.
1:09:36
[SPEAKER_01]: We see her like take out the terrodactyl thing, stab it to death.
1:09:40
[SPEAKER_01]: And then suddenly she's over like as a low angle and she's over deck like, hi.
1:09:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Great introduction of a character.
1:09:51
[SPEAKER_01]: And then you're just talking and talking and talking until he straps her tears back and says now talk that way behind me But classic uh not enemies to lovers, but just enemies to family Did you have a pre- like who would you rather I guess this is kind of a dumb question?
1:10:11
[SPEAKER_01]: I was gonna ask would you rather hang out with the artist?
1:10:17
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm not trying to chill with no sense
1:10:19
[SPEAKER_01]: He's not even the, oh man, I was totally hanging out with the, I know she can't smoke weed, but I really didn't clue her.
1:10:32
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, yeah, there's no choice and this is pretty clear who you want to hang out with.
1:10:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, do you think though, so Thia kind of wanted Tessa to be her sister, when she heard about Dekin and Quay, do you think Tessa also wanted Thia to be her sister, even though she betrayed her?
1:10:54
[SPEAKER_05]: Yes, it looked like they had before the attack, before they found the Tessa liquor in the
1:11:07
[SPEAKER_05]: who I am.
1:11:09
[SPEAKER_05]: they are saying loving relationship, like, sisters would be so yeah, I think I think you wanted to go back to that definitely.
1:11:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I do wish I understand why they didn't include it, just considering this was a movie from Dex perspective, but I do wish we'd seen a glimpse of the bond between them before Tessa turned on Thia.
1:11:28
[SPEAKER_01]: That's my one critique, I think.
1:11:30
[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, we see, as you said, there was like a switch in a way where Tessa started to see Thia as a liability,
1:11:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she says, I tried to protect you while the Kalask attacked, and it almost cost me everything.
1:11:47
[SPEAKER_01]: And, and I think, I guess maybe the big difference is that, um, Thia, by being with deck and bud who will get to him in a bit, um, she had the chance to see a life outside of Wayland, Utahny, and how can Tesla even picture a life outside of Wayland, Utahny?
1:12:06
[SPEAKER_01]: What is she going to go live alone in the jungle?
1:12:10
[SPEAKER_05]: I think it goes back to exactly that moment when she comes back online and she's being fed, you know, Tessa, I'm talking about it's being fed all of this information by Braille and Utahny, you know, and it changes your perspective when your creator is basically telling you, you know, if you don't do this thing, I will uncreate you.
1:12:38
[SPEAKER_05]: having almost been uncreated.
1:12:42
[SPEAKER_05]: She's just coming from being uncreated.
1:12:44
[SPEAKER_05]: You know what I'm saying?
1:12:47
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
1:12:48
[SPEAKER_05]: The entity that gave her, you know, life is saying, I'll take that away.
1:12:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:12:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Because she's mother.
1:12:57
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
1:12:58
[SPEAKER_05]: I'll take it away.
1:12:59
[SPEAKER_05]: And that's, you know,
1:13:01
[SPEAKER_05]: And in the way, that's exactly what, you know, Dick has gone through with his father.
1:13:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
1:13:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
1:13:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think, also, we get to see the have all these warm experiences out there.
1:13:15
[SPEAKER_01]: And Tessa finds out about them, but she's just reading it from the logs.
1:13:21
[SPEAKER_01]: So it doesn't have the same impact for you.
1:13:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, although it is funny, so in terms of her actually kind of defending her sister, the whole thing where, uh, at some point text says to the, like, it is an honor for you to on to me.
1:13:38
[SPEAKER_01]: And then Tessa does a call back where she's like, oh, we are collecting you as a specimen.
1:13:42
[SPEAKER_01]: It is an honor for you.
1:13:44
[SPEAKER_01]: That's, that was clearly sassing back about like, that's all what you said to my sister.
1:13:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but yeah, test test that she's controlled by fear and thea is motivated by love and um, I like a story where love trumps fear.
1:14:02
[SPEAKER_01]: So 1984 boo, no, it's a good girl.
1:14:07
[SPEAKER_01]: It's all about the opposite of you.
1:14:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and, you know, this is where we get the other, it's an on the nose exchange, but it's is the one that I think about the most where Thia, it says, Thia, this is what is asked of us and Thia says, we can be more than what they ask of us.
1:14:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And Tessa says it, I almost made the same mistake that Yout just brother made the week must be called and the year it broke in.
1:14:38
[SPEAKER_01]: So I always like, first of all, soon as someone he calls somebody else broke in, I'm like, you only broke in people call other people broke in, that's my theory.
1:14:49
[SPEAKER_01]: But just yeah, we can be more than what they ask of us.
1:14:52
[SPEAKER_01]: I would say is the thesis of the movie.
1:14:56
[SPEAKER_04]: It's the point of the movie.
1:14:59
[SPEAKER_05]: What is Dex for the asking of him?
1:15:06
[SPEAKER_05]: What is he being more to?
1:15:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, to be lived by this youture codex where you don't Where you hide anything that resembles affection or emotion Or that you have to be alone wolf Rather than we'll talk about the whole alpha concept comes up
1:15:30
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think he's already rejected that before he's we see him we see him he the how much he's internalized it throughout this movie as he's talking to Thia and Thia is the one who's really like you know it's okay to care about people it's okay to team up with people yeah but I think he he I think the relationship that he had with his brother has already disproved that
1:16:00
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think by the end of this movie, it does, but he's still, oh, no, he's still reciting the party line throughout the night.
1:16:07
[SPEAKER_05]: I know he is, but I don't think he's reciting the party line.
1:16:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it takes a while.
1:16:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, it takes a while for it to truly come out.
1:16:14
[SPEAKER_01]: But I, I think it helps him grow, like I said before, his brother definitely starts him on that journey.
1:16:23
[SPEAKER_01]: And the, helps him go the rest of the way along with bud.
1:16:26
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, circumstances.
1:16:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Can I ask, what was your favorite action moment, fight moment?
1:16:41
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, man, decking his father.
1:16:46
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, at the end.
1:16:47
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, at the end.
1:16:51
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
1:16:52
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
1:16:53
[SPEAKER_01]: I know a lot of people say the leg fights where we have us.
1:16:57
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, that was funny as hell.
1:16:58
[SPEAKER_01]: That was funny, yeah.
1:17:00
[SPEAKER_01]: And I like to tell them it's just like, there was like a rack of legs like pants hanging on a rack when we're in funny if they all came to life anyway.
1:17:10
[SPEAKER_05]: That was fun.
1:17:10
[SPEAKER_05]: That was definitely fun.
1:17:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:17:13
[SPEAKER_05]: Definitely the final battle with his wife, my favorite.
1:17:16
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I mean, I agree.
1:17:17
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like somehow the stuff, the battle on the base wasn't as climatic as some of the earlier battles.
1:17:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I know there's a complaint on the discord that the other synths go down to easily, which is, yeah, okay.
1:17:30
[SPEAKER_05]: Just for him.
1:17:31
[SPEAKER_05]: That's fine.
1:17:31
[SPEAKER_01]: It's fair.
1:17:32
[SPEAKER_01]: I think my favorite might have been the bone bison battle, because it was really, because you have.
1:17:40
[SPEAKER_01]: but on the one hand fighting against them and then with them in the end and then that also down the middle kill with them standing like splitting the bone bison like that's crazy.
1:17:52
[SPEAKER_03]: That was crazy.
1:17:53
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that was crazy.
1:17:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:17:56
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let's take a quick break here when we get back, we're going to, we've tease but a few times it's time to talk about but end the callisc right after this.
1:18:17
[SPEAKER_01]: What did you think when Bud first showed up in that fight that I was talking about?
1:18:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Did you suspect he would become an ally?
1:18:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Or did you think Bud was going to go down quickly?
1:18:33
[SPEAKER_05]: you know, I didn't suspect that this creature would have any, you know, further use.
1:18:41
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, I thought it was just part of the fauna that we're seeing and eventually, you know, get rid of it or whatever.
1:18:49
[SPEAKER_05]: So it was a pleasant surprise to see, but stick around for me.
1:18:53
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
1:18:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, especially they're competing for the hunt.
1:18:58
[SPEAKER_01]: It's how they're introduced is kind of reminded me of Ice Age, the whole thing with the A-Corn.
1:19:04
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean I haven't seen the whole series, but they already have to get word for it.
1:19:15
[SPEAKER_05]: Alright.
1:19:16
[SPEAKER_05]: I see each.
1:19:18
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like two characters that are like fighting for this acorn, and yeah, anyway.
1:19:24
[SPEAKER_01]: But then we see bud, visibly impressed by Dex, awesome boom bison kill, and then not only steps in to save them when bud didn't have to, because it's apparently bud has this impervious skin, but then later starts like copying everything that Dex does, like bud looks up to Dex so much after that.
1:19:45
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that was funny to to see, but in print.
1:19:50
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, and I'm decking that way.
1:19:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then Dex kind of a jerk to him at first.
1:19:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Like only reluctantly shares the kill and then abundance but the next morning and after Buds spat on him and everything.
1:20:08
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, I would do, I would have done the same thing.
1:20:10
[SPEAKER_01]: You would have abandoned, bud?
1:20:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
1:20:33
[SPEAKER_05]: But it all happened in retrospect, like in the moment that the college was on deck, that's when I realized, like, oh, that's when I before this sniffing, I realized in that moment like in the seconds before the mother college started to sniff, I was like, you're very lucky.
1:21:01
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't think that I realized until deck out right said it when Bud was sitting in the callisc print later in the movie, but then when I went back and watched for a second time, then is like, oh, yeah, they were laying out all this stuff like, yeah, I was surprised by Bud's appearance, says she's never seen a creature like it.
1:21:19
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, yeah, the boom
1:21:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, yeah, finally, when you see the close up of the calisks face in the fight, like right before this sniffing, you can see in retrospect, like, oh, yeah, that looks like the same kind of face.
1:21:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, that the spitting being spat on by Dex saved.
1:21:47
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, sorry, Dex being spat on by Bud saved from.
1:21:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then it was a really sweet and disgusting payoff when Dex fished back on Bud later too.
1:22:02
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll family now.
1:22:04
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, that's family.
1:22:09
[SPEAKER_05]: Leave me out of the past given dinner.
1:22:14
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you decided on a favorite creature design, but I guess I'm going to go with the callous, because it's cool that they're self-healing.
1:22:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Like that moment where deck cuts off the callous, this callous head.
1:22:28
[SPEAKER_01]: And then it starts to reattach and like, oh crap, that's why it's unkillable.
1:22:33
[SPEAKER_05]: Hydro.
1:22:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:22:35
[SPEAKER_05]: I was expecting to see two more pop-up, but I was just like happy that it was just one of that.
1:22:41
[SPEAKER_05]: That's so fresh right there.
1:22:44
[SPEAKER_05]: I think, yeah, I think it's between the callous and what you call it, those little flying lizard things.
1:22:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was cool too.
1:23:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I think it was interesting that it seems even before they went into the field, there's supposed to be collecting stuff for Whale and Yutani as weapons, as bio-weapons, basically, and they as the first one to be like, well, actually maybe there's something positive, medicine that can come out of this self-healing creature.
1:23:30
[SPEAKER_01]: and but yet we find out that this this potentially like this could be the creature that has the cure for cancer, but it is also extremely deadly deadly and has killed many young chope before.
1:23:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So and it's amazing that like it would have killed if Dex father had come here, totally would have killed him and reason why Dex survives is because Dex
1:23:59
[SPEAKER_01]: So I loved that tech after just once tech discovers the Caliscus Buds mother, you can tell it's like immediately, like, okay, off limits for me.
1:24:10
[SPEAKER_01]: And it says, like, you free the Caliscus, I'll get my trophy, but now Bud means the trophy is Tessa's head and spine at the end.
1:24:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
1:24:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Doesn't impress his father, but that's cold.
1:24:22
[SPEAKER_01]: That's cold.
1:24:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you just, your trophy is the head of your new,
1:24:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't know the least of this system.
1:24:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly, I was thinking, and we were talking about it in dark tower because we've been covering it.
1:24:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to Dairy.
1:24:40
[SPEAKER_01]: There's the concept of the catette.
1:24:42
[SPEAKER_01]: And so their catette is like deck and thea and bud.
1:24:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:24:49
[SPEAKER_01]: And then Tessa, uh, she, uh, like, how sad slash awesome was it when Tessa exploded the Colis from when it was such a cool visual.
1:25:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:25:01
[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, oh, shit.
1:25:03
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
1:25:03
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
1:25:06
[SPEAKER_05]: Like, I don't know.
1:25:09
[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, wow.
1:25:10
[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, no.
1:25:11
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry, Tesla.
1:25:12
[SPEAKER_01]: I wanted you to be the one that is dead.
1:25:14
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it went from like 0 to 100 to just so quickly.
1:25:20
[SPEAKER_05]: You're like, oh, yeah.
1:25:22
[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, man.
1:25:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:25:25
[SPEAKER_01]: She felt she feels like she's the one who's been betrayed.
1:25:28
[SPEAKER_01]: I do feel a bit bad that like it all and so badly for Tessa.
1:25:31
[SPEAKER_05]: I know.
1:25:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
1:25:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
1:25:35
[SPEAKER_01]: It's her fault, but
1:25:37
[SPEAKER_01]: If things had gone a different way for her, nature versus nurture.
1:25:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, if things, if she chose it, yeah, if she, if she had just chosen one point to side with her sister, like, yeah, they're so far from wailing you, Tani, how is this mother going to shut her down if she just leaves the base with Tessa?
1:25:59
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm thinking, you know, from the other sense or sending other sense to come get them at some point.
1:26:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but they go down like butter apparently so.
1:26:09
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, not me.
1:26:09
[SPEAKER_05]: But I guess that's the fair right.
1:26:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
1:26:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, and then in the end, so both thea and dek have killed family members, but family members who have killed other blood or found family members.
1:26:25
[SPEAKER_01]: So both were raised by cold and feeling parents and in some ways destroy that parents or the product of that parent and then find freedom.
1:26:34
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's, it still is a bit bloodthirsty in a way.
1:26:38
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not all kumbayas.
1:26:42
[SPEAKER_01]: But I guess it needs to be, and I love this whole thing with the, I'm a big, I love wolf swelps or some of my favorite creatures on the planet, and the as says the alpha isn't the wolf who kills the most, the alpha is the one who best protects the pack, and
1:27:00
[SPEAKER_01]: this by saying this to deck.
1:27:02
[SPEAKER_01]: This allows deck to because if he looks at his brother's actions and protecting him in youtube terms, then deck is obligated to think of his brother as weak and not a good youtube.
1:27:14
[SPEAKER_01]: If he looks at back at his brother's actions in these terms, who's like, that's right, he's the alpha.
1:27:20
[SPEAKER_01]: He's stronger than the other youtube because he protects his pack.
1:27:27
[SPEAKER_01]: So do you think Dex gonna call himself Wolf from now on?
1:27:31
[SPEAKER_01]: No, not.
1:27:32
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
1:27:33
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
1:27:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they all have these kind of code names.
1:27:36
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, no, just stay with Dex, bro.
1:27:40
[SPEAKER_01]: We did have, there were two, I don't think they've ever really said these names on screen, but in the movies, there's always names that are given to the ones that the Yacha we've seen before, so they're having a wolf.
1:27:54
[SPEAKER_01]: in the second alien versus predator, and apparently also another wolf in the AVP 3 video game, which I haven't been.
1:28:05
[SPEAKER_05]: But we haven't known their names, though.
1:28:07
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, yeah, like it's what we call them, but it's not what's said on screen.
1:28:11
[SPEAKER_05]: This one, this is not their names, it's coming from us, from the human who are encountering them, I would suspect.
1:28:18
[SPEAKER_01]: But a lot of people, I mean, a lot of people.
1:28:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, there's a lot of groups on Earth who, you know, once they go through some ritual, some writer, whatever they get a new name, or even, you know, you think about baptism.
1:28:31
[SPEAKER_05]: No, there's a sleep deck with deck.
1:28:33
[SPEAKER_05]: We know that we need to hold on.
1:28:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he can be both too.
1:28:36
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's both badass.
1:28:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's alpha, protects his pack.
1:28:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so what was it to you said that your favorite fight was the final fight with his father?
1:28:48
[SPEAKER_01]: What were your fears?
1:28:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we did like about it.
1:28:51
[SPEAKER_05]: Just him, you know, really incorporating his own fighting style and just going against the grain.
1:29:00
[SPEAKER_05]: Like if he would have fought his father straight up, he would have died and he listened to his brother, he found his own way, he used the things that he'd learned while under death of planet to his advantage and just came up with a totally different way of fighting.
1:29:20
[SPEAKER_05]: And his father was not prepared for someone who could you don't counteract the superior
1:29:28
[SPEAKER_05]: And I think that's what made this so great for me because we always see that in the Predator movies where the humans who find this, you know, use everything to their advantage in order to counteract the technology of the Yalchya and to see a Yalchya do it.
1:29:52
[SPEAKER_01]: That was that was cool.
1:29:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I liked him.
1:29:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, how he either the whole blast from the ship.
1:30:00
[SPEAKER_05]: So that was great.
1:30:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Highlighted where his father was hiding cloaked because, of course, dex, not cheating like that.
1:30:07
[SPEAKER_05]: Right, right, none of he's not cheating.
1:30:09
[SPEAKER_05]: He doesn't have the...
1:30:12
[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't have it yet.
1:30:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:30:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then he literally takes it from his father, which is fair.
1:30:17
[SPEAKER_01]: That is the most earned Thing the most earned credit or cloak ever exactly because he also He takes his father's arm the same way his father took his brothers arm before killing him
1:30:32
[SPEAKER_01]: and then ties him up an unmasked sandwich is like very shameful for Yacha and his father is final plea like I think this is as close as it comes as a Yacha gets to begging.
1:30:44
[SPEAKER_01]: He says perhaps the right son did survive yield now and take your place in our clan like he's trapped from a business strength one arm down and tied up.
1:30:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't know, he said, I have my own clan.
1:30:59
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, I got my family, you took my family from me, bro, get out of here.
1:31:04
[SPEAKER_01]: And then he doesn't even take his father's head as a trophy, but no.
1:31:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Who's big but now, but because bud's grown, just for me, just see, it's, it's, it's, the alternate.
1:31:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:31:18
[SPEAKER_01]: And now he's got the cloaking device, so he gets to be deck of the Ocha and yeah, we go from like we get this overall arc of the movie from trying to impress daddy to realize and daddy sucks and needs to die.
1:31:35
[SPEAKER_05]: What does it say about us that we laugh at that?
1:31:42
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this is a man who's told Quay that he should have killed deck in his sleep.
1:31:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Like I'm sorry, that is not honorable y'all to behave your killing someone in their sleep.
1:31:53
[SPEAKER_01]: How is that honorable?
1:31:54
[SPEAKER_01]: And instead deck went out and found it a whole new freaking culture.
1:31:59
[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, I'm laughing.
1:32:02
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm laughing.
1:32:03
[SPEAKER_05]: I'm laughing.
1:32:03
[SPEAKER_05]: Those are about more right with it.
1:32:08
[SPEAKER_01]: So, what was your favorite character in the movie overall?
1:32:13
[SPEAKER_01]: The deck.
1:32:15
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, deck.
1:32:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:32:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I just, like, between, like, I see reasons for deck, the end bud.
1:32:26
[SPEAKER_01]: To all be my favorite characters for different reasons, which makes me happy.
1:32:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, did you have any favorite gags or bits of world building?
1:32:37
[SPEAKER_05]: I'll park from the, the way the new town is stuff.
1:32:40
[SPEAKER_05]: No.
1:32:43
[SPEAKER_05]: That's, that's what I just found the most pleasing and the most interesting.
1:32:47
[SPEAKER_05]: That connection.
1:32:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:32:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
1:32:50
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I guess, yeah, just I went into it in the beginning, but just the building out of the entire language was really for me.
1:32:59
[SPEAKER_05]: The end I was with our scientific, that was definitely cool, but also, you know, this notion that the mother is coming for him now.
1:33:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm, yeah.
1:33:10
[SPEAKER_05]: So to your point earlier, I really hope that they do have some future show us more about yatra culture, society and how it all works because I think that's really going to be interesting if we do hopefully get a sequel to this and some form that shows why are they the way that they are.
1:33:39
[SPEAKER_01]: mm-hmm.
1:33:42
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, this is the first time that we're going to see, uh, we're going to see female y'all chat on screen.
1:33:52
[SPEAKER_01]: And like this did there are female y'all chat in and how it's cooked.
1:33:56
[SPEAKER_01]: in the comments here and one of the video games I think you can play as a female yacha but it's going to be interesting like I know in the comics it is a sort of matriarchal society where the women are kind of in charge of things at home in the men go out hunting so it will be interesting to see if they keep that or what or like do we think
1:34:17
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think Dex mother is still youtcha, and I don't know.
1:34:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't think she's going to be upset per se.
1:34:25
[SPEAKER_01]: The Dex killed his father.
1:34:28
[SPEAKER_05]: but she might have some judgments about who's hanging out with I don't all mothers have who are these new friends of yours who is this
1:34:48
[SPEAKER_01]: This is no, this is not a way.
1:34:50
[SPEAKER_01]: We don't like other people and I also wonder like what's wailing you, Tani, can I do?
1:34:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Now that you have their base destroyed and they're project blown up in technology destroyed.
1:35:06
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like they're going to be after them.
1:35:08
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the other questions are raised by killer of killers.
1:35:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, so we saw killer of killers.
1:35:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Anyone who hasn't seen it yet, you absolutely should, but it ends with this arena concept where they're engaged in some kind of time travel, the Yalcha because they're bringing together people from different time periods for arena fights, including from past movies.
1:35:29
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, how is all this going to come together?
1:35:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, there's so many different directions the predator franchise can go from here.
1:35:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you have any, will would be your hope for the next film, but like which question would you most like to see addressed?
1:35:48
[SPEAKER_03]: How do you answer it?
1:35:50
[SPEAKER_03]: Can't it to be?
1:35:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm.
1:35:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:35:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's some interesting comics of lore on that that I'm curious about.
1:35:58
[SPEAKER_05]: How do you answer it can't to be?
1:35:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Why are they like that?
1:36:00
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, if they're in the same universe, then
1:36:06
[SPEAKER_05]: This is, you know, with aliens and wheyland.
1:36:11
[SPEAKER_05]: This is going to be a very interesting shared universe that we have.
1:36:17
[SPEAKER_04]: Mm-hmm, yeah.
1:36:18
[SPEAKER_05]: And did the original call it, the big, the big boy had aliens, what do we call them again?
1:36:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Are the xenomorphs?
1:36:26
[SPEAKER_05]: No.
1:36:27
[SPEAKER_01]: The ET or where?
1:36:29
[SPEAKER_05]: No, not ET, man.
1:36:32
[SPEAKER_05]: I want to see how the yatra culture get to be this way and do the engineers have anything to do with it.
1:36:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
1:36:50
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm curious if they're going to ignore those alien prequels or bring it back in, because then of course the alien prequels, they don't mesh with the alien versus predator movies, which I think the alien versus predator movies are still considered canon to the predator side, but not necessarily not to any other side.
1:37:08
[SPEAKER_01]: So the whole-
1:37:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Interconnected canon can on this city of is a mess, so I'm very curious if they're even going to try to address any of that or I would like it to obviously, but yeah, I really like which you said also, I know that in the comics and books and stuff, there's that the youtcha kind of
1:37:40
[SPEAKER_01]: institutionalized in their culture and, um, yeah, like we will defeat others before we are ever defeated again, mentality.
1:37:51
[SPEAKER_01]: So I would love to see that.
1:37:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would love to see that explore it also.
1:37:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
1:37:56
[SPEAKER_01]: for sure.
1:37:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we have some more movie stuff coming up.
1:38:01
[SPEAKER_01]: We have some weekly coverage.
1:38:02
[SPEAKER_01]: What's going on in the lower-hounds feed job?
1:38:05
[SPEAKER_05]: Um, we have it welcome to dairy.
1:38:10
[SPEAKER_05]: Do we have blueberries or so weekly coverage of that?
1:38:14
[SPEAKER_05]: The American Revolution series, which I haven't started watching that.
1:38:18
[SPEAKER_05]: Um, so I'm I'm gonna wait and I think today's the last episode maybe.
1:38:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they dumped all the episodes in a week, so I've watched the first one, but I'm like, I can't watch two hours and night.
1:38:30
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm doing it weekly, but I'm glad there's individual podcast episodes.
1:38:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I can catch up on those as well.
1:38:36
[SPEAKER_05]: Yes, as I watched the episodes, we're probably going to try to watch it together as a family with E. So we're doing a
1:38:52
[SPEAKER_05]: Getting ready to do wicked courage, which should be awesome.
1:38:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm just actually listening now to re-listening to our wicked part one episode from last year with Nicole Marlin and I, and we're gonna get the band back together for for good is the title of the part two, the final part.
1:39:12
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm very excited about that.
1:39:13
[SPEAKER_01]: I've been diving back into the books and rewatched the slime tutorials.
1:39:20
[SPEAKER_01]: That's how you find the play on YouTube if you happen to have it playing nearby.
1:39:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, very excited about that.
1:39:29
[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, check out in the show notes, you'll find a link tree with links to all of our affiliate podcasts, like, never mind the music, where psychology meets music, properly Howard, there between seasons, but funny movie reviews, radio acts of ramlings will be starting with fallout coverage, fallout season two begins very shortly, I think.
1:39:49
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll shift dust.
1:39:50
[SPEAKER_01]: We're actually, we're getting into, back into our Christmas stick with a Christmas pill coverage again.
1:39:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Luke and I will watch them all one day.
1:39:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Not this year, but this year we're watching more of them.
1:40:02
[SPEAKER_01]: So, uh, and the Star Wars Canon timeline podcast, of course.
1:40:06
[SPEAKER_01]: And, uh, if you want to go deeper into the Lohão's community, then we do have super cast and Patreon feeds,
1:40:18
[SPEAKER_01]: that means you get access to ad free episodes and also a bunch of additional episodes like this month is Robert Redford movie festival and I think we're so busy obviously with this other stuff but probably in early December I think John you and I are going to do a what you're watching about the new Witcher season.
1:40:38
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah definitely that's going to be fun because you should be watching it.
1:40:41
[SPEAKER_01]: I am, I am watching my way through, so I am catching up on it so that we can do this.
1:40:50
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm glad I'm glad to have this as a motivator to prioritize this because yeah, it is fun to get back into this Witcher world.
1:40:56
[SPEAKER_01]: I came in through the games and then the show started out.
1:40:59
[SPEAKER_05]: Yes, so did I, so did I, I had him read the books, but been a game player with this.
1:41:11
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I really enjoyed the season, so yeah, good, good, good, good, good.
1:41:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I was I was so behind I'm actually now in the middle of season three catching up, but I also, I want to take cool.
1:41:21
[SPEAKER_01]: I watched the sirens of the G1 which I actually really, I like that.
1:41:25
[SPEAKER_01]: I like that.
1:41:26
[SPEAKER_05]: I like all the spin offs that they do.
1:41:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's it's a little mermaid, but that's the final little mermaid.
1:41:33
[SPEAKER_05]: The more garal that there is on my TV screen, the better I felt.
1:41:39
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah,
1:41:40
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm going to watch the after season three apparently is a good time to watch that other live action one.
1:41:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
1:41:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
1:41:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, so what you're watching coming up probably early December, but we're just glad if you don't feel the pressure to sign up if that's not for you.
1:41:58
[SPEAKER_01]: We're just really glad to have you here listening.
1:42:01
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
1:42:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And thank you.
1:42:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
1:42:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you very much.
1:42:04
[SPEAKER_01]: If you want to help us out at all for free, it's a huge help when you share this episode with other people who you think might enjoy it or even leave a positive rating or review wherever you're listening.
1:42:15
[SPEAKER_01]: We do like to shout out our special thank you to the people who do support us financially.
