- 0:07On September 27th, 1973, the Minnesota Twins faced the California Angels at Anaheim Stadium
- 0:12for a Thursday night game near the end of the season. Both teams were stuck in the middle
- 0:16of the AL West with average records, but the excitement of the game centered around fireballer
- 0:21Nolan Ryan. Ryan entered his last start of the season with 367 strikeouts, which was
- 0:2615 behind Sandy Koufax's single season record of 382 Ks. This is a local California broadcast
- 0:33featuring announcers Dick Emberg, Dave Nyhouse, and Don Drysdale.
- 0:37Brian Carew and Oliva against Nolan Ryan and for the play, here's Dick Emberg.
- 1:00As Bry hit the deck, he kicked dirt all over the plate. Jeff Talbork handling the catching
- 1:07chores. Ryan wastes no time. The 1-0 pitch. Fastball grounded through the right side.
- 1:10On the very second pitch of the game, Ryan loses any chances of a no-hitter as Bry singles
- 1:16sharply into right field. Bry batting 259. These twins are red hot. They've been playing
- 1:21great baseball. They're fresh from a three-game sweep of the Oakland A's up north. They've
- 1:26now won 80 and lost 78 and need only one victory in the final four games of this series to
- 1:31clinch third place in the American League West. Here's the American League batting leader
- 1:36and the new champion again this year, Rod Carew, hitting 349. He has 200 base hits.
- 1:41He takes the ball outside. Bry, the leadoff man, is on. Ryan straightens, takes a look
- 1:49at him, and here's the pitch. A curveball drops over the outside corner, one and one.
- 1:54Tony Oliva, the designated hitter on deck. His twins' team can hit. They've been leading
- 1:59the American League and hitting for a while. The pitch, swing and a miss. Good fastball
- 2:05sailing up and out of the strike zone, and Carew could not resist. One ball, two strikes,
- 2:10and Rod scored 96. Rounds has 200 hits. Leads the club in stolen bases with 40. It's been
- 2:16a big year for Rod Carew from the Panama Canal Zone. The pitch just inside. Fastball, Carew
- 2:25backing away. Rod's back foot out of the batter's box. He's that deep trying to get a little
- 2:30extra advantage on Ryan. He is not in the batter's box. Two and two, and Ryan goes to
- 2:37first base and Bry dances back to the bag. Defensively, Gallagher at third, Schalk to
- 2:42shortstop Parker at second, McCraw at first with Barry Rivers and Pinson in the outfield
- 2:46from left to right. The two-two pitch. Carew ball just misses again. Carew has looked at
- 2:54two pretty good pitches. A fastball that was just off the inside edge and a Carew ball
- 2:59that just bended its way around the outside corner, and it's now three and two. Bry goes.
- 3:05The pitch is high, and the twins have the first two men on. Carew walks. Bry goes to
- 3:11second, and with no one out, here's designated hitter Tony Oliva. Tovar goes out to talk
- 3:18with Ryan. We chatted with Nolan before the game tonight, and he said the key to his performance
- 3:22tonight on a very warm late September night in Southern California is his control. He
- 3:29feels he could have a big strikeout night if he can hit the corners. He just missed
- 3:34the Carew and finished with a walk. So the twins have something going in the early inning.
- 3:40Harmon Killebrew on deck, and Tony Oliva. He said for the first time all season, he
- 3:47went without a wrap on that bad right knee of his in the Oakland series, and he said
- 3:54it feels much better. Infield looking for two. The pitch. Swing a line drive right over
- 3:59the head of Ryan into center field for a base hit. Around third comes Bry. He will score,
- 4:04and the twins lead 1-0 on a solid single to center by Tony Oliva. They've had their hitting
- 4:11close on, and they come out of swinging against Ryan tonight. That ball came very close to
- 4:19hitting Ryan in the head. He was able to just duck underneath it as it whistled by him out
- 4:25through Mickey Rivers in center field. Carew stopped at second. Killebrew is the batter.
- 4:32The pitch. The double steal is on. A line drive down the left field line. Fair ball.
- 4:36Carew scores easily. Oliva will be able to come home on a double by Killebrew. It is
- 4:423-0 Minnesota. And all the balls have been hit hard. So Killebrew on the double steal.
- 4:56Lines went into the left field corner away from Ken Berry. So Carew running on the play.
- 5:01He walked home, and Oliva, even on the bad leg, was able to score all the way from first
- 5:05base as Carew has his 31st, or Killebrew has his 31st and 32nd RBI's of the season. It's
- 5:133-0 Minnesota as Tom Morgan goes to the mound to talk with Nolan Ryan, who has not been
- 5:18able to log it out. And Dick, even though Nolan Ryan last Sunday against the twins beat them
- 5:25for his 20th victory in the first inning, he was hit very hard by two of the three men
- 5:30that started out the thing here this evening. Steve Bryce and Richie Scheinblum to the wall
- 5:35in Minnesota after Rod Garou struck out. Then Tony Oliva lined out to Scheinblum. So he's
- 5:40been hit hard in both first innings of these last two outings. Jim Holt goes after a bad
- 5:45ball. Strike one. Ryan not able to throw that fastball by Oliva and Killebrew, that's for
- 5:54the second. Killebrew at second, no one out. The pitch, fastball line foul, what a shot,
- 6:00down beyond the Ansel dugout on the third-base side. A low, skidding line drive into the
- 6:05crowd. Ryan ahead of Jim Holt, two strikes. Holt is batting 296. He's had a solid year.
- 6:15Minnesota team is batting 272, the American League's top-hitting ball club. Playing for
- 6:22Frank Fulasi, he has been rehired. Two-strike pitch, foul back on the screen. Ryan tried
- 6:27to slip the fastball by Holt and did not. George Midderwald on deck. Midderwald enjoying
- 6:34his finest season in the big leagues, 262 average and 16 home runs. Minnesota leads
- 6:413-0 in the top of the first inning, no one out, and Killebrew is at second base. Ryan
- 6:48ahead on the count, two strikes. Here's the pitch. Curve ball is just a little high. Red
- 6:54clarity has put the squeeze on Ryan tonight. That's the third borderline pitch and they've
- 6:59all gone for balls. One and two to count. Ryan checks Killebrew, the pitch. Fastball
- 7:07pound and foul off the fist, rolls into the Ansel dugout. First of a four-game series
- 7:15between the Angels and Twins that will conclude the 1973 season. Twins need just one win of
- 7:23the four to lock up third place. The one-two pitch by Ryan, high, two and two. And Ryan,
- 7:34certainly very human and cognizant of all of the publicity, not only regarding his great
- 7:40pitching but primarily the strikeouts. Curve ball, strike three, call. That one fooled
- 7:49home. While Ryan would like very much to win his seventh straight game, he's already set
- 7:56a New Angel record with his six in a row. The fans that are here tonight, and we would
- 8:00guess around 10,000, are here primarily to cheer the strikeouts. He now has 368. The
- 8:07magic number for a tie is 14. George Mitterwald batting 262. Killebrew at second base. Ryan
- 8:14checks and the pitch. Swung on and fouled out of play. A fastball that Mitterwald hits
- 8:19into the upper deck down the right field line. And of course, all of the foul balls will
- 8:23be treasured souvenirs tonight, as they will on Sunday, because fans will be able to relate
- 8:29to those who would be interested that it was a ball that was first delivered by Nolan Ryan
- 8:36and finally captured by me, Joe Finn. Mitterwald, 16 home runs, 64 runs batted in. Big year
- 8:46for the catcher from Hayward, California. The pitch, fastball, and that had plenty on it,
- 8:50but it was too high, one and one. Tomorrow night, it'll be Dan Fife for Minnesota, either
- 8:57Rudy May or Frank Tanana for the Angels. 1-1 pitch. He did not go around, says Flaherty.
- 9:04First base umpire says, yes, he did. It's one and two. Flaherty, after Jeff Tauborg
- 9:12asked for help, Bill Degan threw up the right hand and said he went around. And Degan is
- 9:17answering some verbal volleys from the dugout of the twins. And Frank Willissey has gone
- 9:23all the way from the near end of the dugout to the far end to get a closer shot at Degan.
- 9:28The 1-2 pitch. High. Ryan overthrowing that fastball. They've all been up. Two and two.
- 9:36And he's had some velocity on them. He's trying to get everything he has on each pitch. There's
- 9:45only one more tomorrow for Nolan Ryan and he'd like to get as much of the job done tonight.
- 9:51And is his goal. The 2-2 pitch to Midderwald. Too high. So Ryan unable to get the fastball
- 9:58over. He's been upstairs with it and the count now full. In the inning, a leadoff single
- 10:03by Bry Carrua. Oliva singled in one run and Killebrew doubled in two more. Hold has struck
- 10:09out and now it's a 3-2 pitch coming up to George Midderwald. Here it comes. Curveball
- 10:14gets him swinging. Apparently Ryan does have a great curve here in the first inning because
- 10:25the men who tried to hit it have looked rather foolish chasing it. The bottom fell out of
- 10:30that one. Three runs, two strikeouts for Ryan in the first inning. Eric Satterholm hitting
- 10:373-13. Right handed batter. Like the starting pitcher tonight, Dave Goltz. Minnesota boy.
- 10:44Fastball outside and the fans are pulling for each pitch trying to help out Red Flaherty.
- 10:55Ryan working quickly. The pitch curveball is a beauty. Satterholm was falling out of
- 11:00the batter's box and that one snapped over. Excuse me. Satterholm although with a name
- 11:07like Eric Satterholm he should be from that good Scandinavian Minnesota territory is not.
- 11:12Goltz however is. He's from Pelican Rapids by a galley. Dick Nelson knows where that
- 11:18is. Count is two and one now to Satterholm. Stocky right handed batter. One home run since
- 11:25being recalled. Killebrew still at second. Three nothing Minnesota. And Ryan steps off
- 11:31the rubber as Harmon had a big lead. Ryan has his sign from Talborg. His two one pitch.
- 11:41Oh way up over the head of Satterholm. A curveball that slipped out of his grasp. It's three
- 11:45and one on deck. Left fielder Mike Adams. Twins jump in front three nothing. Ryan ready
- 11:55to three one pitch. Fastball is in there. When Ryan gets that fastball in that spot
- 12:04on the outside corner it almost has a crossfire effect. It seems to be running away from the
- 12:10right handed hitter. Three and two. Ryan trying to strike out the side. The pitch. Oh he fouls
- 12:17that one off the plate umpire Flaherty's mask. That one had to sting. And the veteran umpire
- 12:23takes that iron off and make sure it's all in one piece before it puts it back in front
- 12:28of that guardian position. A full count on Eric Satterholm with two outs in the top of
- 12:35the first. Killebrew at second base. Ryan sets and the pitch. Curveball bends outside
- 12:40ball four. So Ryan has struck out two and walked two in the first inning and has thrown
- 12:46a lot of pitches already. Mike Adams the number eight hitter in the lineup steps up. He's
- 12:54averaging two thirty two on the season. Little guy right handed batter but he's got quick
- 12:59hands and looks like he's going to be a good hitter. On a former Major League or Bobby
- 13:04Adams the pitch. Check swing foul. Off the press box facing and shoots down there. One
- 13:14strike on Adams. The angels and twins have played a dead even through the first 14 games
- 13:21of this season. Each team with seven wins here at the big a Minnesota has the edge three
- 13:25and two. Ryan with an exchange of baseball. Paul Borg down with a sign. Killebrew from
- 13:33second Satterholm from first the pitch curveball outside broke too much one and one. It's basically
- 13:43a right handed hitting lineup for Frank Willis these twins tonight against the right hander
- 13:47Ryan left handers are Karew and Oliva and Holt. The pitch curve is in there. One ball
- 13:56two strikes. Henry Aaron ran into some tough luck tonight the game with the Dodgers rained
- 14:01out and of course that one will not be made up so he loses four more at bats. Ryan knows
- 14:07how that weather action can hurt you. The pitch swing and a miss. Ryan gives up three
- 14:17runs on three hits. He leaves two and strikes out three and after a half inning Minnesota
- 14:24three the angels against Dave Golds are coming to bat. First pitch to Mickey Rivers has taken
- 14:32low for a ball. Mickey with a 10 game hitting streak needs a hit tonight to tie the longest
- 14:37streak by an angel all year chops this one toward first going to be a tough play. Killebrew
- 14:42up with it the threat of first base is not in the foot. I guess that's one way to slow
- 14:51him down and he goes hobbling down the right field line. Rivers is now hit safely and 11
- 14:56straight games tying Sandy Alomar's longest hitting streak of the season and Mickey has
- 15:02only been here this month when he chops one like that it's almost impossible to throw
- 15:08him out. Commiserates now with John Roseboro. He bends forward just waiting for the sting
- 15:14of that throw to wear off his ankle. Killebrew trying to fire to the pitcher Golds covering
- 15:20but even had to throw gotten the Golds his glove. Rivers had beaten a play. When's lead
- 15:27three nothing bottom of the first inning. Ray Federico out there to see two rivers.
- 15:34Ready. Daughter Roseanne and celebrated her 21st birthday yesterday and we aired and not
- 15:42sending along our best to her. And Freddie's certainly one of the super people in baseball.
- 15:46I wish everyone in this ballpark could get a chance to shake the hand of this gentleman
- 15:50from Seattle Washington. He's loved by all and the way he hustles off the field is indicative
- 15:57of the kind of spirit he brings to this club. That guy needs a hot minute trainer in the
- 16:05league. The river is OK. Dave chalk elevated to the number two spot in the order as manager
- 16:12Bobby Winkle said to do some last minute juggling with Bob Oliver suffering from a mild case
- 16:16of the flu. Chuck hitting to thirty six right side is open. Rivers leads away. Killebrew
- 16:21holding him on the pitch. Check swing foul. Frank Robinson on deck. Looking ahead to
- 16:31the second inning. Ryan needs one more strikeout to become the first man in major league history
- 16:38to strike out seven hundred in two years. Go back. His record has been tied at six ninety
- 16:44nine. Ryan needs one to break the consecutive year strikeout mark. Golds delivers low and
- 16:51outside is wearing a bunch of chalk. Just joined us. Ryan gave up three runs before he got
- 17:00an out in the top of the first then he struck out the side now has three hundred seventy
- 17:05for the year. Twelve behind Kofax. Golds straightens and the pitch. Check swing foul back to the
- 17:13screen. Golds is one and one lifetime against the angels mentioned he's from Minnesota the
- 17:25eighth native of the state of Minnesota to play for the twins. Outfield playing chalk
- 17:32shade to pull. Carew and Terrell up the middle looking for the double play ball. Here's the
- 17:39pitch outside might have been a check swing foul as the ball popped out of middle wall
- 17:45glove and his actions as he went after it indicative that he's not concerned about rivers
- 17:49breaking for seconds. So chalk must have gotten a piece of it and the count would remain one
- 17:53and two. Golds a very deliberate workman. It's a warm warm evening in Southern California.
- 17:59The temperature must be in the 80s at this hour. Chalk waves the wood back and forth
- 18:09rivers and easy lead from first the pitch high and inside ball to a fastball. Now Don
- 18:17Drysdale not with us tonight. He and his lovely wife Ginger celebrating their 15th wedding
- 18:22anniversary tonight and from all of us the very best. The Drysdale understand they gave
- 18:29each other scuba diving equipment and lessons for their anniversary. Line drive right field
- 18:34and the angels have runners at the corner. Here is Frank Robinson and the angels try
- 18:52to get back for Nolan Ryan. He is Jeff Burrows for the runner up spot to Reggie Jackson of
- 19:04the Oakland A's Jackson with 32 and Frank at age 38 is the fourth best RBI man in the
- 19:12year. Jackson 117 may vary with 100. George Scott has 98 and Robbie now with 95 and a
- 19:20chance to pick up at least one in this spot. The infield plays back. They'll give up a
- 19:24run for a double play chance. Golds delivers swing a line drive on the left field line
- 19:29foul off the facing of the box seat railing and comes out in the left. Robbie grabs a
- 19:37good handful of dirt out of that batter's box and rubs the palms together fixes that
- 19:42helmet to top his head. Tom McCraw on deck outfield deep toward left. The ball should
- 19:48carry well tonight. Anything hit in the air is going to get more distance than normal
- 19:53here at Anaheim at night. Rivers at third chalk at first one strike on Robinson the
- 19:59pitch by gold swing line drive. Rivers scores chalk holds at second it's three to one.
- 20:06Minnesota Robinson's 96 RBI of the season and just as it was for Nolan Ryan. Dave Gault's
- 20:14having trouble getting people out. He's given up three straight singles Robinson needs one
- 20:28more extra base hit to tie Jimmy Fox and Ted Williams number eight all time. That RBI ties
- 20:35him with Bob Oliver and Leon Wagner for the most runs batted in in a month. That was his
- 20:4126th in this month of September. So he has finished with a flourish. Now the time runs
- 20:48on no and out runners at first and second time across the batter hitting two sixty four
- 20:52he takes a breaking ball low ball one. McCraw he too has had a good September three twenty
- 21:00four in the last 18 games has been his average. Minnesota three the angels one bottom of the
- 21:07first inning looks like we might be here for a while tonight. Gault straightens. Here's
- 21:13the pitch outside to an old well that heat wave is thrown a curve ball at our big a scoreboard
- 21:24and it's like someone threw a knife right in the center that thing. It's thrown up some
- 21:31funny figures tonight to another count the pitch low three balls Robinson the tying run
- 21:42at first base Dave chalk at second and McCraw the hitter with three balls no strikes and
- 21:48Frank Wellesley says get somebody loose in that bullpen. A right hander gets up to start
- 21:52throwing Bill hands the veteran right hander acquired from the Cubs during the offseason
- 22:00Gault says three oh pitch he walked in. The third Robinson to second the bases are loaded
- 22:11and Frank Wellesley walking to the mound. Well he rehired by Calvin Griffith as the
- 22:17Minnesota Twins manager again in 1974 his team has had some excellent streaks this season
- 22:25and a couple of unbelievably bad streaks and we ask him about next year and how he will
- 22:32attempt to keep his team away from the losing strings and he said he felt that the one big
- 22:40need is the bullpen that his play was sloppy. The team's play was during those streets but
- 22:46primarily the fall was on the bullpen. He used as a case in point Joe Decker had something
- 22:51like four or five games in a row where he left with the lead and wound up Minnesota
- 22:55losing the game. So the twins might be in the market for some relief help. Well as he
- 23:03leaves hands continues to throw and they depend on his the matter hitting to 62 HALO over
- 23:10every base McCraw Robinson and chalk no enough three to one twins in the first the pitch
- 23:16check swing did he go around apparently not her ball was in that five straight balls thrown
- 23:22by gold third base umpire spring said as the appeal is made shakes his head. No he checked
- 23:29back in field set for two third baseman Satterholm is back high and well off the line. Killer
- 23:39Brew playing behind the runner McCraw as Goltz winds the pitch lined out of play into the
- 23:45upper deck one and one Ken Berry would be next. Mickey Rivers started it legging out
- 24:00an infield chopper and hits by chalk Robinson now the walk to McCraw one one pitch fly ball
- 24:07into right center field not too deep over to get it as he Brian makes the catch tagging
- 24:11is chalk everyone is tagging chalk scores and going to third is Robinson. Frank Robinson
- 24:25showing the hustle of a rookie advances from second to third with only one out he's in
- 24:30position to score the tying run on and out as Ken Berry steps in. We pause for station
- 24:36identification. Now we salute all of those youngsters in the angel organization that
- 24:41are in the winter instructional league down in the Phoenix area listening on KXTC on this
- 24:46the angels radio network and this is KXTC Glendale Phoenix 92.3 FM stereo don't miss
- 24:54the action of the Phoenix Sun score for needy youngsters in the season opener against the
- 24:58Seattle Supersonics Wednesday October 10th all proceeds from the game go to the Gazette
- 25:02Youth Fund. Minnesota with three in the first the angels with two only one out McRaw at
- 25:09first and Robinson at third again the infield plays back the pitch to Barry ground ball
- 25:13right side that'll get the run in career up with it. Flips the first for the out at the
- 25:17tie game at three. The big play that you won't see in the box score tomorrow Robinson alertly
- 25:31tagging at second and advancing to third where he could score on that infield shot by Ken
- 25:36Berry. So the angels something they've not done much of this year get two runs on out
- 25:42in this first inning and were even at three. Al Gallagher the batter Barry's chopper to
- 25:48the right side did two things that got Robinson in and advanced McRaw the tie breaking run
- 25:53in the scoring position. Dirty Allen the lineup the pitch breaking ball for a strike Gallagher
- 25:58hitting 277. How did that think he'd play anymore this year or at least start any more
- 26:04games the way Bob Oliver was going. But with the flu dirty Allen there and a chance to
- 26:09give the angels the lead. Galtz looks back at McRaw the pit low with a fastball one and
- 26:17one. You know the twins happy not only about the sweep of the Oakland A's at the Coliseum
- 26:26they grabbed that up last night but Bert Blylevin getting his 20th win against 16 losses his
- 26:31record identical to that of Nolan Ryan. The 1 1 delivery outside. Nice stop by Mitterwald
- 26:392 and 1. Blylevin just missed a no hitter last night and infield hit. Carew made a diving
- 26:45stop on the outfield grass but could not throw the Oakland batter out and that was the only
- 26:50hit off by 11 his second one hitter of the season. Two balls and a strike on Gallagher
- 26:57the action pitch coming up McRaw at second base with two outs bottom of the first out
- 27:01three three tie Ryan struck out the side in the first curve ball chopped the third right
- 27:06there as solder home he fires across for the out and the inning is over. Three runs for
- 27:11the angels on three hits they lead one and after one the angels in Minnesota tied at
- 27:17three from beautiful Anaheim Stadium on a midsummer baseball night the angels and the
- 27:25twins wrapping up seasons play in a wild first inning. Each team getting three runs and three
- 27:31hits and Nolan Ryan matching that magic number of three as he fan three twins and he stands
- 27:36at 699 tied with Sandy Copax most strikeouts in consecutive years. No man has ever struck
- 27:43out 700 and Ryan is just a few pitches away. Jerry Terrell starts it off the number nine
- 27:51hitter right handed batter the curve ball is just a little inside ball one. Terrell
- 27:55crowding the plate backed out of there and didn't miss by much. He's hitting 271 has
- 28:00done a fine job subbing for Danny Thompson who has had a multitude of injuries this year.
- 28:06One oh pitch fastball wave that a mess and that one was fine. You know Thompson had discovered
- 28:11during the winter that he had a mild case of leukemia that is being treated. That is
- 28:17not the reason he has not been flying. He is healthy. It's been a lot of other problems
- 28:21muscle pulls and such ground ball to the right side Parker behind second fire the first for
- 28:25the out good play by Billy Parker one gone. Here's the leadoff man Steve Brie. He started
- 28:34that three run first inning with a base at the right. The quietly angels were in Minnesota
- 28:38last weekend. Danny Thompson suffered a broken toe on his right foot during batting practice.
- 28:42So he will be out for the rest of the year. And that goes with a groin pull he had in
- 28:47May and he had a sprained ankle in July. So it's just been a tough year for him all
- 28:51the way around. But Terrell has done an excellent job filling in. Here's Brian a two fifty nine
- 28:57hitter the pitch by Ryan a curve ball is high ball on angels. Baseball is brought to you
- 29:02by Chevrolet. Mighty happy to announce their newest wagon. The Vega has a one oh pitch
- 29:08curve ball outside to know Brian right handed hitter wears twin ones on his back in red
- 29:19to all pitch all the way to the screen off the glove of catcher Jeff Toe board three
- 29:23balls and no strike. The Phillies got a run in the top of the 13th inning to lead Pittsburgh
- 29:30three to two. The Mets are not scheduled tonight. So if Pittsburgh loses the Mets game that
- 29:38half game would lead by one a victory by Pittsburgh would tie them with a Mets three oh pitch
- 29:43channel down the middle three and one. Mets are 80 and 78 Pittsburgh 79 and 78 starting
- 29:54this evening in the Phillies. Mighty troublesome three one pitch right to call that one had
- 30:00a little heat on it. The bright thought it sounded a little outside. Full count of Brian
- 30:10one out top of the second a three three time. Ryan rocks. Here's a pitch ground ball by
- 30:15the mound by Parker in the right center field. So Brian hits the ball to the opposite field
- 30:21again for a base hit the angels with Ryan on the mound playing everyone to hit late.
- 30:26And so Parker was guarding the hole on the right side and although the ball was really
- 30:30not hit that hard he could not range that far to his right to make the play. The bright
- 30:36two for two and here's Rod Carew walked in the first inning. Boy he had a season again
- 30:43200 hits the pitch curve ball low ball on and he just hit it anywhere. You have to play
- 30:50him straight away because he'll line one down the left field line just as quickly as you'll
- 30:54pull on into the other corner. The pitch curve ball on the inside is one and one.
- 31:01The rules got that batting title all locked up no one close one one pitch outside. Here
- 31:23it comes curve ball up too high three and one on the title last year with a 318 average
- 31:40three one pitch curve ball fouled at the play. Rod's lifetime Major League average is three
- 31:49oh nine and it's higher than that after his big year this season and he would have won
- 31:56still another batting title had it not been for that knee injury in 1970 he was hitting
- 32:00three sixty six at the time he was knocked out for the season three to pitch runner goes
- 32:04on a miss throw to second base not nearly in time. In fact Parker was able to one hand
- 32:09the ball on the shortstop side of the bag to keep it from going into center field. So
- 32:15that's a three to four. That is the seven hundred strikeout for Nolan Ryan. No one in
- 32:20baseball history can make that claim in back to back season seven hundred for Ryan. He
- 32:25now has three hundred seventy one this year. Eleven the magic number to tie Kofax and
- 32:32they want that baseball as Red Flaherty calls for it and throws it into the angel dugout.
- 32:38That's another to add to the collection and the fans about the message board to spell
- 32:42it out for him. Some realize that that is seven hundred for Ryan. As you mentioned the
- 32:48big one eleven off to tie and actually a bigger one the 12th to go ahead. But he is also now
- 32:53only seven away from his twelve hundred career strikeout. He is mind boggling really. He
- 33:00is something foul back by Tony Oh nearly beheaded Mr. Nolan Ryan with a line shot single to center
- 33:07field in the first inning to drive in a run one strike on Oliva. Brian has stolen second
- 33:12base a three three tie two outs in the top of the second. You become a bit jaundiced
- 33:20by Ryan straight strikeout abilities and forget truly what he is doing. The pitch strike two
- 33:26and a half. Two strikes on Tony Oliva the tie breaking run. Brian is out there at second
- 33:43base. Ryan delivers. Oh a little high and he had a leave a pool. The labor would have
- 33:50been late pulling the trigger on that one one into the camp. Right at second base he
- 34:05leads easily away the outfield playing Oliva not to pull one into the cat. Ryan delivers
- 34:11a curve ball. Ryan has struck out five men in the first two innings and his magic number
- 34:22is now reduced to 10 to tie Sandy Kopecks and after one and a half a three three tie.
- 34:33Dave Gault a three three tie. Tunes up with George Midderwood. He'll face Billy Parker
- 34:40Jeff Tolborg and then the lead off hitter Mickey Rivers. Each team with three runs in
- 34:43that first inning. Ryan struck out three in the first inning and came back to get two
- 34:48tough outs. Carew and Oliva on strikes in the second. So you now have the total of three
- 34:53seventy two this year and seven hundred and one in the last two seasons. Oh my Billy Parker
- 35:02hitting two fifteen last game Parker hitting three thirty three. Gault big right hander
- 35:15he takes his time. Ready to work to Parker bat right down on the end. I with a fastball.
- 35:31Stand up and the one oh pitch curve ball in there one and one. You look at the other club
- 35:40records for most strikeouts in a season then you get some perspective on what Ryan's doing
- 35:45here. One one pitch is waved at and miss. Dave McNally has the Baltimore all time record
- 35:51for most strikeouts in a season. Two hundred two Ryan now tonight has three seventy two.
- 35:58You go back to 1912 to get the Red Sox pitcher Smokey Joe Wood struck out two fifty eight
- 36:05some hundred and fifteen less than Ryan for the all time Red Sox record. Ed Walsh for
- 36:11the White Sox 1908 to sixty nine fastball knocks Parker down it's two and two. Of course
- 36:19Bob Feller for the Indians at three forty eight in nineteen forty six. Mickey Lowlitz
- 36:24the all time Tigers strikeout pitcher three hundred and eight two years ago. The pitch
- 36:32line drive by the glove of golf but picked off by Caruso throws him out. Oh that ball
- 36:38was hit hard hit the side of the mound however and that kicked it toward the second baseman
- 36:42Caruso who was able to make the play. Jeff Torborg steps up he's batting to twenty the
- 36:50Kansas City Royals strikeout record held by Bob Johnson he got two hundred and six three
- 36:55years ago. Milwaukee's all timer hundred and sixty nine by Marty Patton. Minnesota Dean
- 37:01Chance when he struck out two thirty four in nineteen sixty eight for the Yankees. That
- 37:06would be an interesting thing. The New York Yankees all time strikeout pitcher 1904 Jack
- 37:12Chesbro two hundred and forty low ball one Oakland A's or any A's pitcher including
- 37:18the Philadelphia A's would be George Rubio ideal 1904 and for the senators or now the
- 37:24Texas Rangers Walter Johnson's best was in 1910 when he struck out three hundred thirteen.
- 37:30So you start tickling your memory with all of the great men who stood out in the middle
- 37:36of that diamond and try to throw a ball by a hitter whether it be with a fastball or
- 37:40with finesse. I again two and one to Torborg and suddenly Nolan Ryan is the best in the
- 37:47American League and now he is just ten away from the all time major league record and
- 37:53will repeat something we've said before. I think there would be even more drama if we
- 37:57were in any other city in the United States. The memory of Sandy Koufax is much too fresh
- 38:01for all of us here. The great left hander ground ball one hopper to the third baseman
- 38:05Sotterholm who throws across for the out to away. By that I mean in Detroit or in Boston
- 38:13or in New York one of the Midwestern cities that have been with baseball so long. Just
- 38:19the fact that they might have a man to set the new American League record would be exciting
- 38:23enough. Ryan has been pitching in the shadow of a man we all remember very well fresh in
- 38:30our memory. The great left hander the Dodgers Koufax River steps in he beat out an infield
- 38:36hit to start the three run rally the angels tying it in the first inning at three eleven
- 38:42straight games now for Rivers who takes it outside ball one. Rivers with forty one hits
- 38:50this month. That's out of a slightly open stance and a crouch. Golds delivers curve
- 38:58in there. Minnesota got three without and out being recorded by Ryan in the first inning
- 39:05single by Brian Carreau walked a single in a run and Killebrew doubled in the other two
- 39:11take two called one and two a good fastball angels came back on straight singles by Rivers
- 39:16chalk and Robinson Robinson knocking in the first run then McCraw walked to load the bases
- 39:22and drove in the second run with a sacrifice flying very knocked in the tying run with
- 39:25the ground out the pitch ground ball right side Rod Carreau at the edge of the grass
- 39:30quick flip in time for the so Golds gets the angels on three ground balls in the second
- 39:36inning one two three and after two the angels and the twins tied at three. Top of the third
- 39:42inning the angels and the Minnesota twins are tied at three here at Anaheim Stadium
- 39:46and this is Dick Henberg with Dave Niehaus and Dick Nelson from the big day hoping you'll
- 39:49be with us final three games of the season tomorrow night at eight Saturday night at
- 39:53seven and two o'clock on Sunday afternoon and Ryan might well be pitching on Sunday against
- 39:59Minnesota in the finale against Bert Blylevin to the third Nolan Ryan ready to work to Harmon
- 40:04Killebrew and here's Dave I'd take Harmon Killebrew his first time up a line double
- 40:08down the left field line that drove in to Harmon playing and only his fifth game since
- 40:13knee surgery the day before the All-Star game he takes a fastball upstairs one ball and
- 40:18no strikes that final of Phillies beat the Pirates three to two that was 13 innings the
- 40:24next pitch to Killebrew occur just outside two balls and no strikes George Culver the
- 40:29winner Zachary took the loss for the Bucks the Bucks drop a half notch the line in the
- 40:35two oh pitch to Harmon Killebrew a curve very high and inside three balls and no strikes
- 40:41so Pittsburgh drops one full game behind the idle New York Mets in that wide open National
- 40:47League East race line to the bill of his cap and the 3 0 pitch now to Harmon Killebrew
- 40:54a fastball high and inside ball four and on four straight pitches Harmon Killebrew cuts
- 40:58down the first base for Nolan Ryan that is the third base on ball that he is issued in
- 41:03the ballgame and here is Jim Holt Holt was the first of Ryan's five strikeout victims
- 41:12all struck out his first time up in the first inning left handed batting right fielder hitting
- 41:17a two ninety six the pitch to him a fastball over the outer edge at the knees for a strike
- 41:20ball oh and one Killebrew no threat at first base with that bum left knee Tom McCraw playing
- 41:28behind Harmon Ryan at the belt Killebrew just walks off the bag and the pitch to Holt swing
- 41:33and a miss like to Ryan walks down a front slope of the mound now back on top Ryan a
- 41:43quick worker is at the belt again and the 0 2 pitch to hold a curve high and outside
- 41:47one and two Ryan again is ready to go to the belt does so checks Killebrew at first and
- 41:59the 1 2 pitch to hold change right.
- 42:01Oh that kind of means do that to a big left handed batter.
- 42:06Ryan gave him the big motion and then floated a breaking pitch over the outside edge of
- 42:10the knee that is number six number three hundred and seventy three nine away from the tie can
- 42:17away from the record second time that he has struck out Jim Holt looking and here is George
- 42:24Mitterwald Mitterwald struck out in the first inning Killebrew with his hands on his hips
- 42:29anchored at the bag at first Ryan stretches and the pitch swung on ground ball to Parker
- 42:34backs up on the ball he goes to short and no he doesn't he drops the ball as he starts
- 42:39to go to shortstop and Billy Parker will be charged with an error.
- 42:47So Parker trying to get rid of the ball in a hurry he did not have to because Killebrew
- 42:52cannot run that well and as he tried to fuck the ball out of his glove he dropped it so
- 42:57it'll be an error on Billy Parker Mitterwald goes to first Killebrew to second and here
- 43:03is Eric Satterholm the stretch by Ryan Satterholm walked his first time and there is a sweeping
- 43:11curve way outside low on one.
- 43:15I rather want to know what's for Ryan not only is he thinking of the strikeouts but
- 43:19he's thinking in the wind column too and the angels still with a chance to tie the twins
- 43:23with their they would need a sweep of this four game series however the one office to
- 43:27Satterholm a curve for a strike one and one one man down in the third a three three tie
- 43:38the stretch by Ryan and the pitch fastball high and away one ball and one strike well
- 43:42one of the most precious ingredients in Bush's time time to age naturally time to create
- 43:46its own natural carbonation so settle down to the natural one settle down to Bush the
- 43:50beer that brings you baseball the two one pitch curves like to call two balls and two
- 43:57strikes on Eric Satterholm Satterholm hitting a three thirteen he has one home run he has
- 44:02driven across nine Killebrew is at second Mitterwald is at first Ryan has struck out
- 44:07six the stretch the two to pitch high ball three and strike two Ryan again back on top
- 44:22Satterholm very slightly close to and the stretch by Noli and the payoff pitch a fastball
- 44:27swung on a ground ball toward short talks got it he goes to Parker Parker's way to the
- 44:31first double play so one more strikeout here in the third six four three double play Ryan
- 44:39and the angels are out of it here in the third inning no runs no hits one error and one left
- 44:46we go to the bottom half of the third it's the angels three the twins three and the bottom
- 44:56half the third in this three three tie right hander Dave Gose we'll look at Dave Chalk
- 45:00Frank Robinson and Tom McCraw the angels three runs on four hits the twins the twins
- 45:06three runs on four hits the angels three runs on three hits Mopov's up picking up all three
- 45:11of their runs in the first inning Dave Chalk a line drive base hit to write his first time
- 45:16up David batting average at two thirty six and after getting off to a very slow start
- 45:21after being recalled like talk is picked up in his batting average Dave with five RBI
- 45:27Dave Gose just stoically staring down to his battery made George Mitterwald in the pitch
- 45:31of the curve for a strike all in one Eric Satterholm is at third Jerry Terrell is at
- 45:38short Rod Carew is at second Harmon Killebrew is at first Gose one strike delivery chalk
- 45:44runs up on it as if the fun and takes a fastball inside one ball and one strike and I'm resident
- 45:51Mike Adams is in left field Steve rise in center Jim Holt is around and right Eric Satterholm
- 46:00looking down tall six four right hander to the wine of the one one delivery now chalk
- 46:05runs up as if the bun again and pulls the bat back out and takes a good one this time
- 46:08a curve for a strike one ball and two strikes you just joined us Nolan Ryan has struck out
- 46:15six through three innings he's already eclipsed the major league record for most strikeouts
- 46:21in two consecutive seasons the one two pitch of the line drive a little dire and a center
- 46:25field a ball in for a base hit and David chalk bleeds one loops it back over the second base
- 46:31bag in the center field for his second base hit of the ball game the hit totals are even
- 46:35at four and here's Frank Robinson Robinson with his ninety six run driven in his last
- 46:43time up and Frank with a good shot at one hundred RBI to go along with at least those
- 46:49thirty home runs Robinson all of a sudden is very much in that American League home
- 46:54run derby for nineteen seventy three resting only two behind Reggie Jackson chalk a pretty
- 47:02good lead at first out on my killer brew and the pitch by ghosts the Robinson is last time
- 47:07up and Franklin a good shot at one hundred RBI to go along with at least those thirty
- 47:13home runs Robinson all of a sudden is very much in that American League home run derby
- 47:19for nineteen seventy three resting only two behind Reggie Jackson chalk a pretty good
- 47:26lead at first out on my killer brew and the pitch by ghosts to Robinson fastball for a
- 47:30strike all in one Dave Goltz against the angels this year has no record he is one and one
- 47:44against them career wise so the first diving back in on his hands and he's Dave chalk
- 47:57Goltz again turns around throws the first and chalk again dives back in on his hands
- 48:01and knees into the dirt Harmon killer brew there's a chance that the great slugger of
- 48:06the twins is playing his final four games in a Minnesota twins uniform and we'll pursue
- 48:12that story in a moment or two the stretch one strike delivery to Robinson foul back
- 48:18off the fists onto the screen oh and to Calvin Griffith the president of the twins has two
- 48:23designated hitters and both of them carry hefty salaries way over the one hundred thousand
- 48:28dollar mark Tony Oliva of course much the better average the three time American League
- 48:35batting champion Harmon killer brew with a great power Mr. Griffith is not so sure that
- 48:42he can afford to carry two hundred thousand dollar designated hitters this stretch and
- 48:47the pitch to Robinson curve low and outside fake throw to first base by the catch of George
- 48:52Mitterwald one and two killer brew's name goes with a Minnesota twins old Washington
- 49:00Senators franchise about the way Henry Aaron does with the Braves franchise but sometimes
- 49:06baseball can be a cruel game to go to first base but still get down the right field line
- 49:11chasing in a second baseman Rod Garou and while all this happened Dave chalk will seem
- 49:15all the way from first to third so it'll be an error on the pickoff move by Dave Goltz
- 49:24twice before Goltz before going to the stretch and flip toss the first base trying to get
- 49:28chalk and twice he had David diving back in on his hands and knees this time he tried
- 49:32it and threw it away and chalk did something to show that even though he's a young man
- 49:36he has learned his baseball lessons well as he broke for second base he did not bother
- 49:40to waste time looking where the ball was he knew he could make it to second and before
- 49:44he got to second he was already looking at Parker third to see whether he should come
- 49:48on and Parker waved him on and without hesitation chalk made it to third and actually turned
- 49:53through that's how well he got over there and Robinson now with a chance to pick up
- 49:56his ninety-seven far behind the one two pitch to Frank a curve outside two balls and two
- 50:01strikes to Frank Robinson leaning on the bat in the on deck circle is Tom McCraw Goltz
- 50:12just behind the rubber now is ready to receive his sign from middle wall does so chalk just
- 50:17a couple of feet down the line from third the two two pitch to Robinson a fastball low
- 50:21and outside ball three three balls and two strikes the Angels with the go ahead run at
- 50:26third nobody out and the twins infield playing up trying to cut off the run about halfway
- 50:32up shortstop Jerry Terrell second baseman Rod Carew Harmon Killebrew playing even with
- 50:36a bag at first just behind the bag at third Eric Sutter home goes with the glove off now
- 50:43puts it back on Robinson waits the wind and the payoff hits the Frank Robinson a curve
- 50:56outside a little change for a ball for the Angels with runners at first and third nobody
- 51:01out second base on balls given up by Dave Goltz and here is Tom McCraw McCall McCraw
- 51:12walked in the first inning the Angels after they had given up three runs in the top half
- 51:21of the first came back with three of their own very quickly on an infield base hit by
- 51:24Rivers a base hit by chalk a base hit by Robinson sacrifice fly by Pinson the stretch the pitch
- 51:31to McCraw low and inside ball one one and oh and to stir around down in the Minnesota
- 51:38twins bullpen now right hander begins to get up and throw earlier it had been Bill hands
- 51:50Goltz at the belt one oh pitch to McCraw outside ball two two balls and no strikes
- 51:59wins three runs four hits one error the Angels three runs four hits and one error center
- 52:05fielder Steve bry pulled around just a little bit in the right center field conference at
- 52:10the mound between Middlerwald and goats now with goats with his hands on his hips finally
- 52:17broken up George comes back behind the plate Tom McCraw hitting a 264 has hit the ball
- 52:28very well a month of September Goltz at the belt the two two delivery a fastball tap foul
- 52:35of the plate two balls and one strike I believe the count should be they have to two on the
- 52:45board now the plate umpire corrects the board it is two balls and one strike on Tom McCraw
- 52:56plate umpire is red clarity Bill Degan is at first Lou Demuro at second Marty Springstead
- 53:00around a third the stretch by Goltz and the pitch to McCraw swing and a foul tip at the
- 53:08plate gets through the legs of both the catcher Middlerwald and the plate umpire red clarity
- 53:14now the count is two balls and two strikes the first of the final four of 1973 Goltz
- 53:29on top McCraw waving a wood back and forth the twins will concede the run for the double
- 53:38play the stretch in the picks and a crawl line drive base hit right field in easy the
- 53:42score is chalkman third base it's four to three angels Robinson makes a turn at second
- 53:46will hold on there the throw behind him the shortstop Jerry Terrell trying to get him
- 53:49in the billfold right at second base but Robinson was already safe at that bag so Tom McCraw
- 53:55with another line drive base hit his 24th RBI of the year and it is four to three angels
- 54:04bring along Beta Pinson who drove in to run his first time up and before he steps in we
- 54:08pause for station identification this is the angels radio network Frank Quillacy at the
- 54:19mound chatting he has a right hander Bill hands warming up in the bullpen and I believe
- 54:24he is going to go to the bullpen right now Dave Goltz has given up five hits in the three
- 54:33plus innings that he has worked the angels still have runners at first and second and
- 54:37he will go to the bullpen well you know Christmas really isn't that far off here we are the

- 55:35the scores that we have on an abbreviated baseball evening the important ones taking
- 55:39place in the National League East with the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh
- 55:43Pirates in thirteen innings by a score of three to two so the Bucks fall one full game
- 55:50behind the New York Mets Pittsburgh now seventy nine and seventy nine the Mets eighty and
- 55:59seventy eight in thirteen it was the Phillies three the Pirates to cover over Zachary answer
- 56:07a home run for the Phillies in the first with one on for Dell that was his eleven now Oliver
- 56:11had a home run for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first with one on that was his twentieth
- 56:15of the year it remained to two through twelve innings and in the Phillies scored the winning
- 56:21run in the top half of the thirteenth and won it by a score of three to two at Bush
- 56:26Stadium in St. Louis this afternoon the Cardinals got a one hitter from Reggie Cleveland they
- 56:31beat the Chicago Cubs by a score of two to nothing all but eliminated the Cubs from Bennett
- 56:36contention in the National League East Cleveland the winner fourteen and ten who'd the loser
- 56:40fifteen and fifteen the Cardinals are now two and a half games behind the idle New York
- 56:45Mets the Cardinals are however three games back in the loss column behind New York the
- 56:51Dodgers and the Braves got rained out in Atlanta as Henry Aaron got rained out of probably
- 56:55four at bat look at the American League scores in just a moment as Vada Pinson steps in
- 57:00against right hander Bill Hans the Angels with a base hit by chalk the throwing error
- 57:04by Goltz buying chalk to go to third the base on balls of Frank Robinson the RBI single
- 57:09by Tom McCraw they have taken the lead four to three Robinson at second McCraw's at first
- 57:17the pitch by hand swing and a miss by Vada Pinson oh and one in the American League the
- 57:21White Sox this afternoon before seventeen hundred and twenty nine in Chicago in ten
- 57:26innings beat the Kansas City Royals three to two Buddy Bradford's home run won it for
- 57:32Chicago Goltz at the belt one strike pitch now to Vada swung on a ground ball toward
- 57:39short right there is Terrell he goes to the bag himself to throw the first for the double
- 57:42play Terrell was already shaded over toward the bag at second it was an easy play for
- 57:47him so the DP going six three with Frank Robinson moving down to third base on the play and
- 57:52here's Ken Berry.
- 58:00Ken Berry with a high chopper on the right hand side that drove in Frank Robinson from
- 58:05third his first time up with a third run of the inning for the Angels for Ken that was
- 58:10his thirty sixth RBI Ken's average standing at 285 the wind and the pitch by hand the
- 58:17slider for a strike on one the Yankees on a nine hit shutout by Pat Dobson beat the
- 58:25Milwaukee Brewers two to nothing Dobson nine and eight Slayton took the loss for the Brewers
- 58:31thirteen and fifteen for Slayton the wind by hand the one strike delivery drag been
- 58:38up third baseline foul third base coach Salty Parker will throw it back to the pitcher Bill
- 58:44Hands on to Mr. Joe Coleman one is twenty third game of the year for Detroit Coleman
- 58:53beating the Baltimore Orioles five to two Coleman over Garland those are all the scores.
- 59:02Berry stands up there with two strikes on him Robinson down the line from third the
- 59:05wind by hand the pitch to Ken high and outside one ball and two strikes to get back to the
- 59:12plot as we go to the fourth Nolan Ryan has struck out six after the Angels finish with
- 59:19their offensive show here in the top half of the fourth the wind by hand and the pitch
- 59:23a fastball on the ground ball to the right side Garou gets a nice convenient hop flips
- 59:26over to Harmon Killebrew and the Angels are gone in the third for the Californians one
- 59:31run on a couple of base hits one error and the Angels lead one and the score after three
- 59:38the Angels four and the twins have three.
- 59:41Nolan Ryan just arriving at the pitching mound as we're set for the bottom half or rather
- 59:46the top half of the fourth inning Nolan with six strikeouts perhaps taking it easy back
- 59:51in the players lounge with the Angels during a rather long half inning in the bottom half
- 59:56of the third so he is just finishing up his warmup tosses with Jeff Torborg in the fourth
- 1:00:03he'll look at Mike Adams Jerry Terrell and Steve Brie the Angels four runs five hits
- 1:00:09the twins three runs on four hits Mike Adams his first time up struck out against Nolan
- 1:00:15Ryan struck out to end the first inning.
- 1:00:25Mike wears number 25 on the back of his blue traveling double nips for the Minnesota Twins
- 1:00:30Ryan tugs at the bill of his cap goes into the wind and the pitch to Adams outside with
- 1:00:35a fastball one ball and no strikes.
- 1:00:40The twins this year drawing just over 900,000 one-oh pitch way outside Nolan Ryan again
- 1:00:46overthrowing a fastball two and oh but for Minnesota it was the year that saw them draw
- 1:00:53a little over 100,000 more than they did in 1972.
- 1:01:02The line and two oh pitch to Mike Adams a fastball a big rip and a miss and a batting
- 1:01:06home it pops off the head of young Mr. Adams Adams hitting at 232 he has three home runs
- 1:01:12he is driven across six
- 1:01:22Ryan waiting for Adams to get back in he does so.
- 1:01:26Ryan's two one delivery now fastball another rip and a miss two balls and two strikes.
- 1:01:33Ryan with six strikeouts 373.
- 1:01:44Adams steps back in here is the two two pitch to Mike Adams a fastball strike three called
- 1:01:48it at 374 Nolan Ryan eight away from the tie nine away from the record.
- 1:01:55He cut the plate in half with that fastball I think Adams was looking for that big vendor
- 1:02:00the yellow hammer and got the good fastball looking for the hammer and he got the express
- 1:02:05here is Jerry Terrell are grounded out to second baseman Billy Parker his first time
- 1:02:09up Alan Gallagher in on the grass at third.
- 1:02:13This is a good ballclub for Nolan Ryan to be pitching against for strikeouts her beautifully
- 1:02:19thrown what I thought that was on one did you hurry Terrell.
- 1:02:25Ryan again right back to the plate wasting no time this time he gets the express and
- 1:02:29it's fouled back.
- 1:02:32One and two on Jerry Terrell Terrell hitting it to seventy one.
- 1:02:46The line in the 0 2 pitch fastball strike three.
- 1:02:49There is three hundred and seventy five and Don Drysdale in the top 10 all time strikeouts
- 1:02:57lifetime deserves a little piece of credit for that one because he had noticed during
- 1:03:02the course of the year every time that Ryan went to the crossfire he always threw the
- 1:03:06curve never throw the fastball to the hitters knew the curve was coming and that time no
- 1:03:11curve ball a fastball and strike three called Steve Bride is two for two against Nolan Ryan
- 1:03:18the line and the pitch slider just outside all and one rather one and no one ball and
- 1:03:25no strikes to Brian right twice has hit the ball to the right side through for base hits
- 1:03:30the one 0 pitch.
- 1:03:31There is the curve strike called and he has the crackling curve ball tonight one ball
- 1:03:37and one strike.
- 1:03:40The bright kind of backing away and he bowed to the wishes of the curve the 1 1 pitch.
- 1:03:45There's the curve again just slow two balls and one strike.
- 1:03:51The count to Steve Bride Ryan little meditation walk behind the grass on the back slope of
- 1:03:56the mound now back on top rubbing up the baseball all the wild tugging at the belly of the cap
- 1:04:02the 2 1 delivery not a briar fastball foul back on the screen.
- 1:04:08Ryan after giving up the three runs in the first struck out the side in the first and
- 1:04:11he is one strike out away one strike away from striking out the side here in the fourth.
- 1:04:16He has eight Ryan again is ready.
- 1:04:22Here is the 2 2 pitch to Steve Bride curve high and inside three balls and two strikes
- 1:04:30Ralph Rowe coaching down at third for Minnesota with his hands on his hips over at first.
- 1:04:35Very Morgan Ryan again rubbing up a new wrinkle in the baseball count three balls and two
- 1:04:40strikes and Steve Bride.
- 1:04:43One with three hundred and seventy five and here she comes.
- 1:04:46There's three hundred and seventy six and the record now very much in focus for Nolan
- 1:04:53Ryan on this night as that is nine years only six strikeouts away from tying Sandy Colfax
- 1:05:01his record seven for the record all along nine strikeouts in the game through four innings
- 1:05:08for Nolan Ryan.
- 1:05:09We go to the bottom half of the fourth angels for the twins three.
- 1:05:15The fans still a buzzer at Nolan Ryan strikeout performance so far through four innings he
- 1:05:24has struck out nine.
- 1:05:26He has 15 more outs to get six strikeouts for a tie seven strikeouts for an all time
- 1:05:32record Alan Gallagher leads it off for the angels in the bottom half of the fourth and
- 1:05:36takes a fastball for a strike the right hander Bill Hanz.
- 1:05:40No balls and one strike Gallagher his first time up grounded out to third to end the first
- 1:05:49hands winds in the one strike delivery to Gallagher ground ball to third again right
- 1:05:53there is not at home.
- 1:05:54He throws high to kill a bird.
- 1:05:55The first time in time it pulled off the bag.
- 1:05:56I'm not going to write the old side of the bag and he got the ladder to get it.
- 1:06:05It'll be an error on third baseman Eric Soderholm that'll bring along Billy Parker Soderholm
- 1:06:13at all the time in the world.
- 1:06:16But he had Killebrew about five or six feet headed toward right field right down the line
- 1:06:22Killebrew trying to get back to the bag in time to get the tag on Gallagher but couldn't
- 1:06:26do it.
- 1:06:27Billy Parker grounded out to second his first time up.
- 1:06:31Billy hitting a two fifteen it's a four three ball game angels but that is not really the
- 1:06:35story.
- 1:06:36Nolan Ryan with nine strikeouts through four innings.
- 1:06:41The stretch by hand and the pitch to Parker way outside with a breaking pitch.
- 1:06:48One ball and no strikes.
- 1:06:49Angels baseball is brought to you by Continental Airlines where every flight is a flight to
- 1:06:53remember the people at Continental take a personal interest in you each time you fly.
- 1:06:57So you remember your trip for a long time after you're home.
- 1:07:00It's a special way to fly and only on Continental Airlines the proud bird with the golden tail.
- 1:07:08And at the belt one oh pitch to Parker.
- 1:07:10Try to spread up around the shoulders of Billy Parker.
- 1:07:15Red clarity throwing up the right hand one ball and one strike Gallagher is at first
- 1:07:19to four three ball game angels.
- 1:07:26Bill holding Gallagher on at first hands at the belt.
- 1:07:32Token toss to first Gallagher diving back in on his hands and knees.
- 1:07:38Alan will not wipe off that dirt.
- 1:07:39It's part of his uniform when he's flying.
- 1:07:42Stretch one one pitch to Parker swing and a miss a big rip right up around the eyes of
- 1:07:46Bill one and two.
- 1:07:54Bill hands has been somewhat of a disappointment to the twins this year coming over figure
- 1:07:58to move into the starting rotation.
- 1:08:01But he has won seven and he has lost ten.
- 1:08:05The stretch in the pitch to Parker way inside a little chin music to Mr. Parker that time
- 1:08:09two balls and two strikes.
- 1:08:13Hands has started 15 games for the twins this year.
- 1:08:18This is his thirty ninth appearance out of the year.
- 1:08:24And run average of three point six one and the pitch to Parker swung out on a ground
- 1:08:27ball toward short.
- 1:08:28Right there is a shortstop Terrell to step on the bag at second throw to first for the
- 1:08:32easy double play.
- 1:08:33And for the twins they pull off their second six three twin killing Jerry Terrell to Harmon
- 1:08:38Killebrew two down.
- 1:08:41Here's Jeff Torborg.
- 1:08:51Jeff Torborg catching so many of Sandy Koufax's games that chance again to be a part of major
- 1:08:57league history as he is behind the plate catching Nolan Ryan tonight.
- 1:09:06And that deep breath into the line and the pitch to Jeff fastball on a ground ball toward
- 1:09:10the hole over there to plug it up as Terrell.
- 1:09:12He's got it the long throw high again but Killebrew up with the letter this time to
- 1:09:16pull it down.
- 1:09:17So the angels gone in the fourth no runs no hits one error nobody left and after four
- 1:09:23the angels four and the twins have three.
- 1:09:27Good thing you play again for more play here's that.
- 1:09:29All right down three.
- 1:09:30Okay sorry I was thinking about Don also three hundred and seventy six strikeout for Ryan
- 1:09:35six shy and he's off to a tremendous start tonight.
- 1:09:38He faces Rod Carell here in the fifth the pitch high and away ball one.
- 1:09:41Jeff Torborg behind the plate Gallagher chalk Parker and McCraw in the infield Barry Rivers
- 1:09:47and tension in the outfield Ryan rocks back and here's the pitch swing and a man.
- 1:09:53Through walk and scored in a three run first inning for the twins he struck out swinging
- 1:09:57in the second.
- 1:09:59Well the fans tonight came with fingers crossed that they might see Ryan break the record
- 1:10:06tonight but really realism said now it'll be Sunday.
- 1:10:10The pitch straight to call.
- 1:10:12But you can tell from their reaction after he struck out the side in the fourth inning
- 1:10:17to get nine in the first four innings they're thinking now as everyone else is that this
- 1:10:21could be the night he becomes the all time major league strikeout pitcher.
- 1:10:25He's just broken one after another one two pitch high fastball Oliva and killer grew to
- 1:10:32follow in the Minnesota fifth inning.
- 1:10:35Ryan walks down the back slope of the mound rubbing up the baseball the outfield.
- 1:10:40They've been spectators this far in the ballgame with the exception of feeling the base hits.
- 1:10:44They have not had a put out a windup and a two to pitch high and he blistered that one
- 1:10:50in there but around the bill of the helmet of the roof.
- 1:10:56Perhaps to settle an argument or two between Angel and Dodger fans or Ryan and Kofax fans
- 1:11:02first the three to pitch swing and a man and strikeout for Ryan as Peru chased a bad ball
- 1:11:10a fastball scaling up and away three hundred and seventy seven he's five away from Kofax
- 1:11:18when Kofax at the major league record of three hundred eighty two strikeouts in nineteen
- 1:11:22sixty five.
- 1:11:24He had 40 starts.
- 1:11:26This is Ryan's thirty nine tonight.
- 1:11:29His 40th would be on Sunday.
- 1:11:31And that of course with that strikeout of Rod Carew Nolan Ryan again adds to his already
- 1:11:35major league total.
- 1:11:36That is the twenty third time that he has struck out ten or more men.
- 1:11:40That is amazing.
- 1:11:43One out in the fifth inning Ryan has 10 already a leave off the pitch high and outside and
- 1:11:48Ryan just thrusting all one hundred ninety five pound sword the plate on every pitch
- 1:11:54twenty six years old and sometimes you figure the pop of that mitt can be heard all the
- 1:12:00way down to Texas and now a proud son of Southern California.
- 1:12:06The pitch swing.
- 1:12:07The crowd cheering every pitch now and we got a lot of time to go.
- 1:12:18This could be one of the exciting nights of the season here at the big day reacting now
- 1:12:23to the note that Dave gave you a twenty third time this year Ryan has struck out ten or
- 1:12:28more to extend his major league record for the season.
- 1:12:32One ball one strike.
- 1:12:34Ryan winds delivers line drive base hit up the middle.
- 1:12:38So I'll leave it twice and hit that fastball on a shot right back past Nolan Ryan and ends
- 1:12:44the string a three straight four straight strikeout.
- 1:12:47Oh Lava with his second hit after he struck out in the second and here's how many kill
- 1:12:51a brew.
- 1:12:52He doubled in two runs in the first inning and was safe at first.
- 1:12:57He walked in the third and save a second on an air in the third.
- 1:13:00So Carmen won for one infield will align itself or two.
- 1:13:07The game score seems almost incidental at the moment.
- 1:13:09It's the angels for Minnesota three each team scored three times in the first inning the
- 1:13:14pitch fastball swung on right into the power of kill a brew.
- 1:13:20Jim Holt who has struck out twice is on deck.
- 1:13:24Ryan waste no time he sends it back changes up and in a folder string on a fastball and
- 1:13:31adjustment lots of folks trying to help Red Flaherty now one ball one strike one out one
- 1:13:39run lead for Ryan the pitch swing in the hour against power.
- 1:13:45The fastball was by kill a brew.
- 1:13:48Nolan reaches down throw some pebbles off the front slope of the mound.
- 1:13:53Nolan drives toward the batter or toward home plate so vigorously that he wears out the
- 1:14:00toe of that shoe and has had a blister throughout his pitching career.
- 1:14:04He just wears on the right toe as he follows through the one to pitch.
- 1:14:09All back as kill a brew nip that one enough to spoil strike three one and two and Ryan
- 1:14:17thinking about every pitch he takes a slow walk around the first base side of the mound
- 1:14:22now up on top one and two let the crowd call this pitch here it comes.
- 1:14:29A curveball strikes out kill a brew.
- 1:14:34That's the 11th for Nolan Ryan.
- 1:14:38Nolan now has three hundred and seventy eight strikeout.
- 1:14:41He is only four away from Colfax and now it is a very real possibility and everyone cognizant
- 1:14:49of the fact that they may be sitting in tonight on the all time single season major league
- 1:14:55record for strikeout the pitch to hold is outside ball one.
- 1:15:00Ryan off to a tremendous start.
- 1:15:02He struck out the side in the first got two in the second one in the third struck out
- 1:15:07the side in the fourth and he struck out two here in the fifth.
- 1:15:10He won't get hold who pops it up chalk on the outfield grass is hundred makes the catch
- 1:15:15and the inning is over.
- 1:15:16I had the feeling that some of the fans were asking chalk not to catch the ball.
- 1:15:21Well that's not really in the spirit of things although we can understand folks here wanting
- 1:15:26to see the record.
- 1:15:27Ryan nevertheless has the side out in the fifth inning strikes out to allows one hit
- 1:15:32and leaves one and at the halfway mark in this one four and a half innings in the book
- 1:15:35angels lead four to three and Ryan has eleven strikeouts.
- 1:15:39He needs just four more to tie Colfax and five to set the record.
- 1:15:45Bill Hanson amount in relief of starter Dave Goltz.
- 1:15:49He faces the top of the order Mickey Rivers one for two right hander delivers a strike
- 1:15:58Nolan Ryan with eleven strikeouts in the first five tonight an excellent chance of setting
- 1:16:05the mark this evening and certainly is right there on the doorstep in case he misses tonight
- 1:16:09swinging a miss by Rivers at two and two and even with the two days rest regardless of
- 1:16:15what happens in the final four innings tonight he'll be just a handful away from Colfax if
- 1:16:20he goes Sunday.
- 1:16:22Two strikes on Rivers and winds the pitch inside with a fastball.
- 1:16:41The one two pitch Rivers swings and nubs one back a second crew going out in comes hold
- 1:16:46it is hold who makes the catch on the run.
- 1:16:50Little saw fly off the fist of Rivers and hold able to come in and squeeze it for the
- 1:16:54first time.
- 1:16:55Dave Chalk is two for two and he scored two runs tonight.
- 1:16:59First we pause for station identification from Anaheim Stadium.
- 1:17:02This is the Angels radio network.
- 1:17:05And this is KXTC Glendale Phoenix 92.3 FM stereo.
- 1:17:16The pitch to Chalk is he tried to bond and misses it strike one.
- 1:17:25One strike on Dave Chalk is he is going to try to bond his way on.
- 1:17:30Bill hands on the mound.
- 1:17:32Here's the pitch right up over the helmet of chalk and by the glove of middle wall to
- 1:17:37the screen one and one to the young angel shortstop Frank Robinson to follow.
- 1:17:42We're in the bottom of the fifth inning the Angels four runs five hits the twins three
- 1:17:46runs five hits.
- 1:17:47But the story Ryan has 11 strikeouts line drive down the left field line hooking foul
- 1:17:53by about five feet.
- 1:17:55So chalk misses a double by just that margin.
- 1:17:59You can see Dave feeling his maturity as a big league prospect with each plate appearance.
- 1:18:07He looks more confident swinging that bat better and better and certainly has done some
- 1:18:12fine work in the field.
- 1:18:14One ball two strikes to count one out no one on bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:18:19The veteran hands getting a sign from middle wall says yes to the sign chalk up on the
- 1:18:27handle of the bat.
- 1:18:29Here's the pitch outside with a big breaking ball two and two hands and Decker coming to
- 1:18:37Minnesota in the deal with the Cubs last winter when Dave LaRoche went to Chicago to two pitch
- 1:18:43swing and a miss.
- 1:18:44He got him with a breaking ball that strikeout for Bill hands is his first and the first
- 1:18:51of the night for Minnesota pitching Frank Robinson RBI single in the first scored himself
- 1:18:56and he walked in the third inning and six to and one 90s a New Jersey boy.
- 1:19:12The pitch swung on a chopper to short third baseman outside of home in front of the short
- 1:19:16stop throws high but in time for the out of skill a brew has to go up the ladder and spirit
- 1:19:20and come down in a hurry to get the put out.
- 1:19:23So hands retires the angels in order in the fifth inning we go to the six angels for Minnesota
- 1:19:28three five inning totals angels for runs five hits in one error they left to Minnesota three
- 1:19:41runs five hits and two errors of stranded five.
- 1:19:44Nolan Ryan has walked three and he has struck out eleven batters through the first five
- 1:19:49innings.
- 1:19:50He has three hundred seventy eight strikeouts this season just four shy of the major league
- 1:19:54record George Mitterwald Eric Satterholm and Mike Adams in the Minnesota six inning.
- 1:20:01Better wall to struck out and save on Parker's error.
- 1:20:04Pitch by Ryan fastball strike called on the outside corner.
- 1:20:12Ryan gets it back and fires curveball strike to Mitterwald got two strikes on him in about
- 1:20:1910 seconds and now he backs out of the batter's bug.
- 1:20:23He said yeah at least want my time in the center circle here.
- 1:20:26You can hardly blame him if he'd allowed Ryan to throw that next one in at the Venice strike
- 1:20:33he would have taken the fastest walk to home plate and back maybe in history.
- 1:20:37All right just getting the ball and just throwing it to wind up in the two strike pitch curveball
- 1:20:42bounce the third Gallagher up with it.
- 1:20:45Fairhands throws over the head of McCraw all the way into the crowd on the fly and his
- 1:20:50second base goes the time run Mitterwald Gallagher through the ball not just against the boxy
- 1:20:56railing all the way into the crowd and Mitterwald gets two bases on the air.
- 1:21:03So the tying run and scoring position and Eric Satterholm is the better at when landing in
- 1:21:10the seats down the only Minnesota dugout about oh nine or 10 seats in the first row.
- 1:21:18Satterholm has walked and grounded into a double play angels got three runs in the bottom
- 1:21:27of the first inning after the twins got three in the top of the first Satterholm hit this
- 1:21:31one into the upper deck off to the right and a good catch made by a fan angels baseball
- 1:21:38brought to you by Chevrolet take yourself out to the ball game and a Chevrolet Chevelle
- 1:21:42strong and right and handling quick responsive and smooth.
- 1:21:45Chevelle Malibu, Chevelle Laguna they're great to drive curveball on outside one and one
- 1:21:57one ball one strike Mitterwald with no one out stands at second base a four three angel
- 1:22:02lead the pitch fastball hit in the air to right field that should get Mitterwald to
- 1:22:06third he's tagging his pins and circles makes the catch near the foul line Mitterwald on
- 1:22:10his way to third the long throw is cut off by chalk as Mitterwald goes in standing.
- 1:22:16So a two base throwing error by third base Menell Gallagher and a long fly to right and
- 1:22:22the twins can score the tying run on and out.
- 1:22:25The twins could care much less about Nolan Ryan's strikeout performance they would like
- 1:22:31to get a win tonight and know they have third place clinched in the American League West
- 1:22:36Adams has struck out twice swinging and called facing Ryan tonight.
- 1:22:43Infield plays halfway with one out trying to hold Mitterwald at third outfield toward
- 1:22:48right for Adams Gallagher chalk Parker and McCraw in close the pitch strike fastball
- 1:22:56Ryan is using the windup looks over at Mitterwald as he gets the sign from catcher Jeff Torborg
- 1:23:11still staring in much more deliberate now now he nods yes sweeps into the windup kicks
- 1:23:17and deals fastball too low and a good stop made by Torborg is down on those knees to
- 1:23:22protect that one from going through 82 degrees as this game started tonight nearly October
- 1:23:29but it's a warm summer ease in Southern California and Ryan with his fastball making it hotter
- 1:23:35for the twins 1 1 pitch curveball too high two balls in a strike Jerry Terrell on deck
- 1:23:47Ryan has at least one strikeout in every inning tonight and struck out the side in the first
- 1:23:52and the fourth a total of 11 Mitterwald down the line from third the 2 1 pitch curveball
- 1:24:03is outside and again a good stop by Torborg is that one bounced in three and one to Mike
- 1:24:09Adams the left fielder hitting 232 with three home runs six runs batted in he's been with
- 1:24:14the club all season long but hasn't played much been up only 56 times but shows surprising
- 1:24:22power for his size 3 1 delivery hit foul into the upper deck a fastball
- 1:24:39Frank Willis he has announced that he will use one less coach next year with Red Worthington
- 1:24:44the pitching coach taking a college coaching job and ex-angel Bob Rogers will become both
- 1:24:49the pitching and bullpen coach the 3 2 pitch foul back that one's sailing into the lower
- 1:24:56press level one of the executive boobs off to the right Mr. Ockrey's boo that seems
- 1:25:03only fair that the chairman of the board and his guest should have a souvenir of this night
- 1:25:07touch of class by Mr. Adams there at the plate three and two one out Mitterwald at third
- 1:25:17and here's the pitch just outside a fastball misses Adams walks on that 3 2 delivery the
- 1:25:25fourth free ticket offered by Ryan tonight and Jeff Torborg calls time and goes out to
- 1:25:30the mound Jerry Carroll has grounded out and took a third strike right handed batter way
- 1:25:37up on the handle tough to throw the fastball by him Adams from Anaheim and Terrell from
- 1:25:47the San Fernando Valley makes his home in recita runners at first and third one out
- 1:25:57four to three angels here in the top of the sixth inning Ryan delivers a curveball bunted
- 1:26:01foul it was a safety squeeze Mitterwald was not racing in from third he's going to make
- 1:26:07sure that bunt was down before he made his break Dick we can't help but sit back here
- 1:26:11and thank as we look at Nolan Ryan about that rain in Kansas City had it not been for that
- 1:26:16he and Kofax would be tied right this very second and of course he was denied what four
- 1:26:22more innings of pitch that's right fans might be thinking about 400 strikeouts this year
- 1:26:28the pitch strike a fastball at the knees gets away from Torborg but not very far and the
- 1:26:34runners have to hold so twice Terrell going to bunt once he did foul and that when he
- 1:26:43took low at the knees for a strike Ryan pitch away from a dozen strikeouts Adams at first
- 1:26:53Mitterwald at third one out the 0 2 pitch grounded to the right side and throw in the
- 1:26:59right field the run scores there goes Adams around second and he holds as Pinson comes
- 1:27:03up with a ball and the game is tied Terrell he doesn't get that fastball thrown by him
- 1:27:08very often he just shot it right through the gap on the right side of the infield to tie
- 1:27:12the ball game up so the air pays off on the under and run the twins tied up at four a
- 1:27:19piece Terrell's thirty second RBI this year runners at first and second and Steve Brie
- 1:27:25two for three in the game is the batter right handed hitting center fielder Pinson playing
- 1:27:32shallow in right field so Adams could not advance the third curve ball called strike
- 1:27:36at the outside corner the run for the first inning in the game does not appear overpowering
- 1:27:43with his pitches and this has happened often especially about this time fifth sixth seventh
- 1:27:47innings of games pitch by Nolan fastball fouled out of play and again he has two strikes on
- 1:27:52a batter however he had two strikes on Sotterhall before he flied out he had two strikes on Adams
- 1:27:59before he walked and he had two strikes on Terrell before he's single Rod Carew on deck
- 1:28:04a four four tie sixth inning the 0 2 pitch from the side oh a great backhanded stop by
- 1:28:10Torborg he had to throw his body outside and the fans applaud his effort Ryan side armed
- 1:28:18that curveball up there and made sure to keep it away but it started outside and kept breaking
- 1:28:22farther away and Torborg had to do a three quarter dive into the dirt to backhanded runners
- 1:28:30at first and second the 1 2 pitch curveball grounded up the middle could be to chalk flips
- 1:28:35to Parker Parker back to first a double play the inning is over and for the first time
- 1:28:42tonight Ryan does not get a strikeout one unearned run on one hit and one left we go
- 1:28:49to the bottom of the sixth or four four time bottom of the sixth inning we go for all tie
- 1:28:57Tom McRaw they depends on and Ken Berry try to get the angels back to run as Dave Goltz
- 1:29:01the starting pitcher from Minnesota has taken off the hook where the unearned run scored
- 1:29:05in the top half of the inning it belongs now to Bill Haynes who gets ready to work the
- 1:29:09McRaw who has walked and singled in a run Tommy has exploded in the second half of the
- 1:29:17season he's raised that average up to two sixty four takes it high and off the glove
- 1:29:21the middle walled all the way to the screen.
- 1:29:25Ryan tonight has become the first major league pitcher in history to strike out over seven
- 1:29:32hundred batters in back to back seasons.
- 1:29:35Kofax is record with six ninety nine and now Nolan with three hundred seventy eight this
- 1:29:40season four behind Sandy's record one old pitch McRaw hits one down the left field line
- 1:29:48slicing away from Adams who races to the chalk to the warning track and makes the catch a
- 1:29:53good play by Adams as he braced himself against the box seat railing.
- 1:29:59McRaw fouls out to left right fielder Vada Pinson steps up Pinson is driven in one run
- 1:30:04with a sacrifice fly and grounded into a double play.
- 1:30:15Right hander hands against left hander Pinson the outfield plays Vada shade to pull Killebrew
- 1:30:20guarding the line at first base and Peru on the edge of the outfield grass at second high
- 1:30:24fly ball to left this is routine for Adams coming in on it Terrell goes out and gives
- 1:30:29way and Adams makes the play to us.
- 1:30:35To pitch his two outs for Bill Hands and here comes Ken Berry.
- 1:30:38He is not going to run with the ground ball out he's over to angels for Minnesota for
- 1:30:47each team with two errors plans about hit the angels six to five.
- 1:30:57Toes the rubber winds the pitch slider hits the corner strike call five against either
- 1:31:07May or Tana tomorrow night.
- 1:31:10Singer goes Saturday night and Ryan possibly on Sunday inside one and one.
- 1:31:19Arreale Monteguto begins to throw in the angel bullpen Ryan must be over 100 pitches already.
- 1:31:26He was in the high 60s after three innings one one pitch ground ball pulled foul pass
- 1:31:33third and backhanded by Satterholm.
- 1:31:34The count is one and two on Ken Berry.
- 1:31:40Now you certainly have to consider Nolan Ryan for the Salyung award this year.
- 1:31:51He has not had much flack much publicity for it.
- 1:31:55But I would guess he'll get some votes one two pitches filed out of play several 20 game
- 1:32:02winners Palmer Blue Hunter Holtzman Colburn split or Joe Coleman of the Tigers Wilbur
- 1:32:10Wood Bert Blylevin Bill Singer the angels hope on Saturday night and Gaylord Perry has
- 1:32:1519 wins one two pitch fly ball to center over goes the center fielder Brian to right center
- 1:32:24to make the catch and for the second straight inning Bill Hanz has the angels down in order
- 1:32:28we go to the seventh of four four time from Anaheim Stadium Dick Henberg with Dave Niehaus
- 1:32:35and Dick Nelson mighty happier join us Nolan Ryan with the 11 strikeouts through six innings
- 1:32:40involved in now in a four four time we go to the seventh and more play here Dave.
- 1:32:44I Dick Rodger who has struck out twice in three trips to the plate against Nolan Ryan
- 1:32:48leads it off takes a fastball rather swings and fouls back a fastball up against the screen
- 1:32:52for a strike on one Rod became Nolan's fourth and tenth strikeout victim last man to strike
- 1:33:00out against Ryan was Harmon Killebrew back in the fifth in the sixth the only inning
- 1:33:05which Ryan did not strike out a man why did the one strike pitch a fastball low and inside
- 1:33:10one ball and one strike through all for two Rod steps back out.
- 1:33:18Ryan likes to work in that fast fashion one one pitch strike to call through has struck
- 1:33:34out eight times against Nolan Ryan this year Ryan Wines here is the one two pitch to Rod
- 1:33:44Carolla fastball high and two balls and two strikes.
- 1:33:55The two two pitch to Rod Carolla curve just inside red clarity gave it that extra long
- 1:34:01peak and said no three balls and two strikes Ryan really wanted that when he stares back
- 1:34:07down to the red head who doesn't have too much red in the hair anymore mostly silver
- 1:34:13three balls and two strikes.
- 1:34:15Ryan is ready for the payoff pitch to Rod Garou and here she comes three two pitch 379
- 1:34:32three away from the tie or away from the record that is number 12 for Nolan Ryan tonight Tony
- 1:34:42Oliva has single twice in three trips to the plate against Nolan Ryan.
- 1:34:48He struck out the other time Tony O.
- 1:34:53They get himself a foothold with that left foot calling time to make sure that Ryan is
- 1:34:56not going to fast pitch him into the line and Nolan's pitch is a fastball high and tight.
- 1:35:02He's going to fast pitch him whether he steps in or not with fastballs I would imagine although
- 1:35:07Tony Oliva usually try to keep the breaking pitch low and in on this great hitter from
- 1:35:13Cuba and he got the fastball the first time one ball and no strikes.
- 1:35:20Ryan bends deep checks with door board the one all pitch to Tony O. change curve inside
- 1:35:26two balls and no strikes.
- 1:35:28Bush is naturally aged and naturally carbonated it's ruled with the finest of natural ingredients
- 1:35:32because that's the way to make a better beer so settle down to the natural one settle down
- 1:35:37to Bush and remember that Bush is the beer that brings you baseball.
- 1:35:40Right hander Bill Campbell warming up for Minnesota Twins in their bullpen aligned in
- 1:35:45the two all pitch to Tony Oliva low and inside ball three three and all.
- 1:35:59Ryan waiting for Oliva to get back in.
- 1:36:02A four four tie the three all pitch fastball inside ball for Nolan Ryan with his fifth
- 1:36:10base on balls and here is Herman Killebrew.
- 1:36:16Herman has struck out once in three trips to the plate against Nolan Ryan.
- 1:36:21He doubled in two in the first walked in the third.
- 1:36:27Ryan has struck out Bri once he has struck out Rod Carew three times.
- 1:36:31Here is a stretch and the pitch to kill a swing and a miss on one struck out Tony Oliva
- 1:36:38once kill a brew once Jim Holt twice.
- 1:36:42Mitterwald once Mike Adams twice the stretch in the pitch to kill a bruise back to call
- 1:36:46her ball inside corner on to Andy has struck out Jerry Turrow once a total of 12.
- 1:36:55If he can strike out Harmon Killebrew that would be number three hundred and eighty the
- 1:37:01stretch.
- 1:37:02Here is the pitch to kill a brew of fastball.
- 1:37:11He challenged Killebrew with his best fastball right where Harmon likes it right up around
- 1:37:25the eyes and he threw it right by him.
- 1:37:29I'm in Killebrew become strikeout victim number three hundred and eighty the stretch.
- 1:37:33Here is the pitch to hold a swing and a miss.
- 1:37:38If he should strike out the side in the seventh inning they'll give him a standing ovation
- 1:37:42all the way into that dugout.
- 1:37:44Now they're all in it.
- 1:37:47Holt waving a whip back and forth Oliva is at first.
- 1:37:50Here's the stretch by Nolan the one strike delivery a fastball struck to Nolan one strike
- 1:38:01away from being one strikeout away from Colfax's all time record and a chance to strike out
- 1:38:08the side for the third time in this game the stretch the two strike pitch.
- 1:38:12Slow and outside and red clarity really did want to come up with that right arm.
- 1:38:17He did kind of a side step to the left and at the last moment said no it was just low
- 1:38:20and outside one and two.
- 1:38:23Oliva just stationed at first.
- 1:38:25Here's the one two pitch line drive left field that'll fall in for a base hit.
- 1:38:30Oliva will advance as far as second so after going one and two on Holt Nolan comes in with
- 1:38:34a slow curve ball that hangs over the outer edge and Holt goes to left field with it.
- 1:38:42Here's George Middowall a four four tie.
- 1:38:46Nolan Ryan has thrown a lot of pitches something else Dave that naturally we would all overlook
- 1:38:54but indeed is a possibility is the American League single game strikeout record at 13
- 1:38:59inches five away from that.
- 1:39:01That's right the stretch and the pitch change.
- 1:39:06Also Dick I don't know how long they would let Nolan go but there would be a distinct
- 1:39:11possibility of things continue the way they are going that we might go into extra innings.
- 1:39:17I don't know how much rubber is left in that arm of his though.
- 1:39:20The stretch and the one strike pitch.
- 1:39:22Strike two call on the other end again Ryan with a two strike advantage on a hitter Ryan
- 1:39:34tugged at the bill of the cap.
- 1:39:37Well let the crowd tell you this one the two strike pitch.
- 1:39:52Nolan Ryan is one strikeout away from Sandy Colfax's record he has struck out 14 in his
- 1:39:57ballgame.
- 1:39:58He has struck out the side again a standing ovation for the young man from Alvin Texas
- 1:40:04as he disappears into the angels dugout along the third base line.
- 1:40:09Baseball history could be made in the top half of the eighth inning after six and a
- 1:40:15half.
- 1:40:16We have a four four.
- 1:40:18Go to the bottom half of the seventh.
- 1:40:21Well I know selfishly speaking Mr. Richard Enberg a lot of people here would like to
- 1:40:25see Nolan Ryan break the record tonight and you selfishly have to be pulling for him because
- 1:40:31you are not going to be here.
- 1:40:33That's right and I must say this now that Nolan Ryan told me tonight.
- 1:40:36Don't worry about it.
- 1:40:37I'm going to go after it this evening.
- 1:40:38All right.
- 1:40:39Here is Alan Gallagher in this four four tie the pitch swung on and a high fly ball to
- 1:40:44right field in on the ball as Holt out of second baseman Peru and it's Holt for the
- 1:40:48cats one down.
- 1:40:50What did they call that in a in a ballet or an opera when the whole storyline is interrupted
- 1:40:57just to allow you a chance to pull back and enjoy a diverties one.
- 1:41:01This is what the top half of the innings are for Nolan Ryan tonight.
- 1:41:04You kind of just need to relax and wait for his turn to go out on the mound.
- 1:41:08Here is Billy Parker.
- 1:41:09Parker has grounded out to second and bounced into a double play right hander Bill hands
- 1:41:14into the line and the pitch swung on line drive base hit right center field over the
- 1:41:19outstretched love of Rod Carew.
- 1:41:22So while the angels fans at least are waiting for Nolan Ryan to make the appearance the
- 1:41:29angels trying to get him to go ahead run here in the seventh with a one out single by Billy
- 1:41:33Parker a four four tie the twins for run seven hits the angels for run six hits in regulation
- 1:41:42time the twins have six outs against Nolan Ryan and Ryan has already struck out 14 the
- 1:41:49American League record single game 18 the National League record 19 and Ryan most definitely
- 1:41:57has a shot at both tonight.
- 1:42:00Ryan in his no hitter against Detroit striking out 17 the most ever struck out in a no hit
- 1:42:05game in his no hitter.
- 1:42:08The stretch now by Bill hands throw the first back in time is Billy Parker.
- 1:42:19Hands at the belt and the throw the first base again on his hands and knees Parker this
- 1:42:23time time is called as Parker gets back up time called by Bill Degen firing down at first
- 1:42:31we have a four four tie Nolan Ryan has struck out three hundred and eighty one batters this
- 1:42:38year 14 in the game he is one strikeout away from Sandy Copax is Mark the stretch and the
- 1:42:46throw the first again back in on his hands and knees is Parker.
- 1:42:56And just staring over there is Harmon Killebrewd his little house cleaning after Parker had
- 1:43:00died back in on the bag and Billy himself trying to get off some of the Anaheim Stadium real
- 1:43:05estate from his double lift uniform.
- 1:43:15The stretch by hand and again a throw to first this time Parker back in standing up getting
- 1:43:22a little impatient with Mr. Hands the pitch to Torborg swing and a message to slider nicely
- 1:43:28thrown by Bill 0 and 1.
- 1:43:32Nolan Ryan in his forty first start of the year attempting to break Copax's record Copax
- 1:43:40established his mark after forty three starts the stretch and a one strike delivery swung
- 1:43:46on the ground ball toward short Terrell has it he goes to second for one Caruso really
- 1:43:49the first in time for the double play and now we go to the top half of the eighth in
- 1:43:55what could be a most historical happening for all of baseball the deep he turned six
- 1:44:02for three no runs a base hit no errors nobody left and after seven it's a four four tie
- 1:44:12after seven a four four tie the angels for run six hits and two errors the twins for
- 1:44:17runs seven hits and two errors will this be the inning.
- 1:44:21Nolan Ryan one strikeout away from Copax's all time mark up three hundred and eighty
- 1:44:25two two strikeouts away from standing alone.
- 1:44:28Ken Burke will tell you the story as we go to the right day.
- 1:44:32Eric Sonderholm steps up first.
- 1:44:33He is the only man that Ryan has not struck out tonight.
- 1:44:37He has walked grounded into a double play and fly to right field a young right handed
- 1:44:41batter hits out of a closed stand.
- 1:44:43Ryan and everyone in the ballpark know the story.
- 1:44:45The pitch passball fouled out of play strike one the crowd as Ryan came out to pitch or
- 1:44:51take his position on the mound to warm up gave him a standing ovation.
- 1:44:57The scoreboard the big a scoreboard inoperative earlier in the game has been working since
- 1:45:02about the third inning the pitch in the dirt one and one.
- 1:45:06And as Ryan has struck out each Minnesota batter 14 tonight the scoreboard has electronically
- 1:45:12erased those strikeouts between Ryan and Copax fastball miss is a little low and Paul Borg
- 1:45:18holds the ball right there.
- 1:45:21Red clarity one of the few people in the ballpark not caught up in the spirit of things.
- 1:45:26Two balls and a strike Sonderholm the hitter Ryan rocks.
- 1:45:31Here's the pit fastball is fouled back to and to Ryan stands one pitch away from moving
- 1:45:39up shoulder to shoulder with the ace left hander the Dodger Sandy Copax three hundred
- 1:45:44eighty one and two third strikeout.
- 1:45:48Sonderholm heaves a deep sigh.
- 1:45:50He knows to where he stands perhaps in history.
- 1:45:54Ryan has his sign.
- 1:45:55He winds here's the pitch swung on in line foul down the right field line and out of
- 1:46:01play.
- 1:46:02He hit it on the nose a fastball.
- 1:46:08If Ryan sets the record tonight nine thousand one hundred fans will see it.
- 1:46:12That's the crowd this evening.
- 1:46:13Ninety one hundred although it appears to be more than that tonight.
- 1:46:17I think many folks did not figure on it happening this evening and we're waiting until Sunday.
- 1:46:24Two balls two strikes on Sonderholm Ryan Ryan.
- 1:46:27Here's the pitch.
- 1:46:28Her ball is too high.
- 1:46:29Ryan Foss at the front slope of the mound pitches at the glove.
- 1:46:38Tucked at the bill of the cap the three to pitch fastball is too high.
- 1:46:43Ball four.
- 1:46:44Oh he has thrown a very high amount of pitches tonight.
- 1:46:48Let's pause for station identification.
- 1:46:50This is the Angels Radio Network.
- 1:46:55It's us it's us.
- 1:46:56KXTC Glendale Phoenix 92.3 FM stereo message from the Phoenix Alcohol Safety Action Project.
- 1:47:02A bottle of beer an average glass of wine or a shot of liquor all have about the same
- 1:47:06alcohol content.
- 1:47:13First pitch to Mike Adams is right up over the top of the helmet all the way to the screen
- 1:47:17and Adams just laid in the dirt frozen for a moment as if to say did it hit me.
- 1:47:22He really had to get out of the way in a hurry a fastball up and in one ball no strikes and
- 1:47:28on the wild pitch Sonderholm moves into scoring position.
- 1:47:31The game score and we apologize if we have lost that along the way is 4 4 each team scored
- 1:47:37three times in the first.
- 1:47:39The Angels took the lead in the fourth and Minnesota tied it on an unearned run in the
- 1:47:43sixth.
- 1:47:44And now Sonderholm with a walk in a wild pitch stands at second base and the Angel infield
- 1:47:49looking for the sacrifice one ball account on Mike Adams.
- 1:47:52Here's the pitch he's swinging away and grounds at the second up with it is Parker no play
- 1:47:56at 30 flips the mccraw first for the out and on the play moving to third is Sonderholm.
- 1:48:05Jerry Terrell he has singled in a run.
- 1:48:08In fact he tied the game with a base hit the right field in the sixth inning.
- 1:48:11He is grounded out and also took a third strike.
- 1:48:14Tallborg goes out to talk with Ryan and we remind you that Angels baseball is brought
- 1:48:18to you by Continental Airlines the people who give you a flight to remember on Continental
- 1:48:24you get a personal experience worth sharing.
- 1:48:26It happens every day.
- 1:48:28The next chance you get with Continental why don't you fly with them.
- 1:48:31They're the proud bird with a golden tail.
- 1:48:36The possibility of a squeeze in this spot the angel infield draws in and Ralph Rowe
- 1:48:41the third base coach goes through a long series of signs for Terrell.
- 1:48:45A good bunder Ryan works from the stretch the pitch ground ball off the glove of Ryan
- 1:48:51here comes her under the plate the throw by Parker.
- 1:48:54He is out of the infield playing and the ball seemed to take the glove of Ryan as it skipped
- 1:49:06out to Parker and trying to score with Satterholm and he was out by a plenty.
- 1:49:10In fact instead of sliding Satterholm tried to hurdle his way over Tallborg and Tallborg
- 1:49:15nicked him with a glove tag as he leaped by.
- 1:49:19Safe on the field his choice is Jerry Terrell two outs in the eighth inning and now time
- 1:49:23running out in this game for Nolan Ryan.
- 1:49:25He has four outs left and he needs to strikeouts to set the record.
- 1:49:30Steve Bry has struck out once he swings and misses at a curve ball.
- 1:49:36He also has single twice and scored a run.
- 1:49:42Terrell a threat to steal at first base he has good speed.
- 1:49:48One strike the count on right handed hitting Steve Bry and Nolan Ryan sets kicks there
- 1:49:52goes the runner the pitcher swung on a miss.
- 1:49:53Tallborg throw to second base is not in time.
- 1:49:56Diving in head first for the field was Terrell two strikes on Bry and the crowd starting
- 1:50:08to build and it's enthusiasm some fans already standing on their feet and there are very
- 1:50:16few as you look at the crowd in the lower deck behind the angel dugout they're up on
- 1:50:20the edge of the seat same in the mezzanine off to the right.
- 1:50:24They start applauding they want one more strike that would tie Colfax Ryan straight and here's
- 1:50:29the pitch he's got it.
- 1:50:34And now they're all standing all on Ryan has got three hundred eighty two men this
- 1:50:58year.
- 1:50:59The crowd has finally quieted they stood for another 30 seconds cheering Ryan almost asking
- 1:51:17if he wouldn't come out and give them a wave but he'll wait for the record for that.
- 1:51:21Three hundred eighty two strikeouts Ryan whose most his highest strikeout performance a single
- 1:51:28game is 17 he did it last September against the twins and in his no hit game on July 15th
- 1:51:33at Detroit has 15 strikeouts tonight.
- 1:51:37He has tied Colfax at three eighty two and looking ahead to the ninth inning he will
- 1:51:42face and it should be this way.
- 1:51:45Rod Carew Tony Oliva and Harmon Killebrew the three biggest names in the Minnesota lineup
- 1:51:53stand in the way of Ryan and a record all for himself tonight.
- 1:51:58Meanwhile new relief pitcher comes in Campbell goes to work for Minnesota.
- 1:52:03He's done a good job and Frank Willis he's very high on this young man Bill Campbell
- 1:52:08hands with five great innings in relief for four time Mickey Rivers now trying to get
- 1:52:14the angels a run and Ryan his seventh straight victory Rivers one for three the pitch high
- 1:52:21ball one.
- 1:52:28A man from Alvin Texas just 26 years old continues to get out the eraser little number behind
- 1:52:36short that's a tough play for Carol going out he reaches can't get it.
- 1:52:40Rivers around first base and holds the angels have the speedy leadoff man on in the eighth
- 1:52:44inning a soft fly ball off the head of the bat and Rivers has two more hits.
- 1:52:50He's hit safely in 11 straight games and it's just been a terror since coming to the big
- 1:52:55leagues from Salt Lake City that's 42 hits this month.
- 1:53:00Dave Chalk is two for three tonight he scored a couple of runs.
- 1:53:03We'll see if the angels go to the sacrifice the twins infield aligns itself looking for
- 1:53:08the bunt.
- 1:53:09Siderholm in on the grass at third Killebrew holds on Rivers at first base chalk right handed
- 1:53:14batter stands erect up on the handle.
- 1:53:17Made a good pitch but Rivers able to cue it out over short for the hit he sets chalk squares
- 1:53:24bunted in the air.
- 1:53:25Killebrew with an easy catch for the out.
- 1:53:28So the angels have to go back to school on the sacrifice fun.
- 1:53:32They have been consistently poor in that department all season.
- 1:53:35The Rivers is still at first and Frank Robinson is the batter Robinson not in his 96th run
- 1:53:47of the season with a single to center field in the first inning.
- 1:53:50He has walked and grounded out one for two.
- 1:53:53Ryan with that RBI has 26 RBI this month more than any angels ever been able to deliver
- 1:54:01in September and that's also the most in any month by an angel tying Bob Oliver and Leon
- 1:54:06Wagner Campbell against Robinson eight inning a four four tie throw to first and Rivers
- 1:54:13is back.
- 1:54:14The twins infield supporting Bill Hands with three double plays while he was in there.
- 1:54:23Hands allowed only two hits in the five innings.
- 1:54:25Good pitching.
- 1:54:26Here's the pitch breaking ball down too low.
- 1:54:31Campbell gives that hitter a lot of motion.
- 1:54:43That bat on the end.
- 1:54:45Here's the pitch inside.
- 1:54:46It gets away from middle all that rolls out in front of him and River and Rivers unable
- 1:54:50to advance two balls and no strikes and all the time the big a message board locked in
- 1:54:57position the information one season strikeout leaders Ryan and Kofax three eighty two and
- 1:55:03the years were in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 1:55:08The game is tied and so are Kofax and Ryan fastball for a strike two and one.
- 1:55:18Bill Campbell hard throwing right hander Rivers at first base one out a four four tie in the
- 1:55:25bottom of the eighth inning.
- 1:55:27Campbell sets the two on pitch curve ball is too high three and one the twins tonight
- 1:55:34must feel like a bridegroom all the attention on the person in white and tonight it's Nolan
- 1:55:42Ryan.
- 1:55:43He's the bride and the twins just are part of the whole exercise.
- 1:55:49Nine thousand one hundred fans here and cheering this evening.
- 1:55:53They're quiet now but they'll be erupting soon.
- 1:55:56Three one pitch Rivers goes check swing and on the second goes Rivers with a steal as
- 1:56:00Mitterwald does not throw the ball the pitch is called a strike.
- 1:56:06Mitterwald perhaps thought it was ball four and that's why he didn't throw River is coasting
- 1:56:10to second with a steal his eighth since being recalled.
- 1:56:15He has done all the little things you want from a leadoff man.
- 1:56:18So it's a full count.
- 1:56:20Rivers in scoring position with one out bottom of the eighth inning and Robinson and McCraw
- 1:56:25with a chance to get the angels on top.
- 1:56:30Campbell sets here's the pitch sidearm curve is way outside ball four.
- 1:56:34So at first base open Robinson wasn't going to get anything too good to hit.
- 1:56:39That is the 80th time this year Robinson is walk Tom McCraw walked an RBI single and he
- 1:56:47fouled out the left.
- 1:56:50Campbell was 10 and five at Tacoma in the Pacific Coast League.
- 1:56:57And Quillis a see his head as he watches the action from the near end of the Minnesota
- 1:57:03dugout Bobby Winkle the same almost the identical position in the angel home the pitch a strike
- 1:57:09at a period he changed or that might have been a forkball came up there a floating the
- 1:57:17totals on the board identical ball run seven hits two errors each side the angels in the
- 1:57:23bottom of the eighth trying to get the lead for Nolan Ryan.
- 1:57:25Here's the pitch curve ball we've done and missed way out in front of a slow curve on
- 1:57:30deck they depends on the marked men or marked man as the case may be in the top of the ninth
- 1:57:39will it be Karoo Oliva or Killebrew or will it be any of them or all two strikes on McCraw
- 1:57:50runners lead away and here's the pitch fastball inside one and two just toss in this aside
- 1:57:58if Ryan should strike out all three of them in the ninth inning he not only would set
- 1:58:04the major league all time single season record he would tie the American League single game
- 1:58:09record three more would give me 18 Bob Feller's record one and two to count McCraw's pitch
- 1:58:17chop foul at the plate another change came up and hit Tom on the backside up around the
- 1:58:23numbers 22.
- 1:58:34Campbell fixes the ball in his glove and pulls it out sets himself on the rubber a ball and
- 1:58:39two strikes on McCraw.
- 1:58:42Rivers from second Robinson leads away from first the pitch swing and a miss a straight
- 1:58:46change and McCraw out in front.
- 1:58:48So he kept Tom off balance in that entire sequence with off speed pitches.
- 1:58:53First strike out for Campbell and it boils down to they depends on with two outs and
- 1:58:58two on data is over to but he not getting a run with a sacrifice line in the first inning
- 1:59:08Rivers and Robinson ready to go and Benson trying to get that base hit to give the angels
- 1:59:14the lead.
- 1:59:17Campbell stares down the chute.
- 1:59:19Mitterwald with a sign and the pit high with a fastball.
- 1:59:25Campbell throws hard and has a very big motion he really throws arms and legs at you when
- 1:59:31he delivers the ball.
- 1:59:39Campbell sets the pitch change is in there a curveball and he can get that off speed
- 1:59:44pitch over one and one.
- 1:59:47This is only his third year pro ball.
- 1:59:511971 he signed and went to Wisconsin Rapids where he was five and three last year at Charlotte
- 1:59:57was 13 and 10 and then to come of this year where he won 10 and lost five.
- 2:00:03The one one pitch.
- 2:00:04Benson swings and hits it high in the air at a shallow right.
- 2:00:08Mitterwald starts back but now he comes in for it makes the catch and we go to the ninth
- 2:00:12inning no runs one hit no errors two men left the score after eight four four tie and Nolan
- 2:00:19Ryan gets a hand as he jogs out to the mound.
- 2:00:22We'll have the ninth inning in just a moment.
- 2:00:28This is the ninth inning the twenty seventh of September a date that Nolan and his lovely
- 2:00:35wife Ruth will perhaps long remember they've got to even through eight innings because
- 2:00:40Nolan Ryan has 15 strikeouts tonight.
- 2:00:42He has tied Sandy Kofax is all time single season major league strikeout record Rod
- 2:00:47Carew up.
- 2:00:48He takes it low ball one ninth inning.
- 2:00:50Carew Oliva and Killebrew the best of the twins to face Ryan.
- 2:00:53He needs one to erase Kofax his name the pitch curveball in there one ball and one strike.
- 2:01:01Oh there's so many people I know that field close to Nolan Ryan now not just the fans
- 2:01:07but the people who have been directly involved in his success.
- 2:01:10And of course you start with his wife Ruth the 1 1 pitch fastball lined out of play.
- 2:01:16It's one and two to Carew Carew has struck out the last three times up.
- 2:01:20Wouldn't that be a nice way to get the record.
- 2:01:23The major league.
- 2:01:25Well one of the two top hitters there are two all alone.
- 2:01:27The top hitter in the American League Rod Carew against Nolan Ryan it boils down to
- 2:01:32that 382 strikeouts for Ryan the one to pitch outside and the fans standing ease back down
- 2:01:42in their seats with a groan.
- 2:01:45Ryan takes a slow walk to the back of the mound throws that rosin bag away from the
- 2:01:49dugout a man who has been so helpful to Ryan Freddie Frederico the trainer between the
- 2:01:54heat and the ice and the rubdown he has kept Ryan ready all season.
- 2:01:59Nolan hugs at that glove.
- 2:02:01He's ready to pitch that to delivery fastball fouled out of play way up into the third day
- 2:02:07into the auxiliary press box.
- 2:02:09In fact it remains to and to the career and Ryan with another stroll to the back slope
- 2:02:13of the mound.
- 2:02:14And there's Tom Morgan is pitching coach who has watched his every move from day to day
- 2:02:20since way back in March.
- 2:02:22That's a two pitch curveball five ball on the infield Parker waves everyone away.
- 2:02:27It won't be Karrou.
- 2:02:28Parker's got the out.
- 2:02:31There are two left.
- 2:02:33Tony Oliva two singles in three events.
- 2:02:37He has walked and he has struck out.
- 2:02:39Oliva a two time batting champion having a big season on bad legs as the designated
- 2:02:45hitter for the twins hitting two ninety three as he steps up there at the moment.
- 2:02:50He has 16 home runs and he leads the twins with 92 runs batted in.
- 2:02:55Tony Oh Ryan has thrown we would guess one hundred and fifty pitches tonight.
- 2:03:04He rocks back and here it comes fastball high ball on Oliva has sailed two line drives right
- 2:03:12past the year of Ryan tonight for singles to center field.
- 2:03:16Kellebrew on deck the number five home run hitter all time has struck out the last two
- 2:03:21times up for four time.
- 2:03:25Oliva out of the batter's box now back in the pitch curveball fouled at the plate.
- 2:03:31He ran that breaking pitch right in on the fist of Oliva and he jammed it down off his
- 2:03:35front toe that right foot a ball and a strike.
- 2:03:42And someday Roberts Ryan will be two years old in November will understand what all those
- 2:03:48baseballs mean and the Ryan then back in Alvin Texas Ryan not just the one one pitch fastball
- 2:03:57foul back and again it boils down to one pitch one ball two strikes.
- 2:04:03Ryan needs one more strike.
- 2:04:05Oh knowing the pride of this Texan how he would like to get the strike out against the
- 2:04:10caliber of header of a Tony Oliva and Oliva with his great prize up there falling away
- 2:04:16at the batter's box.
- 2:04:17He does not want to be number three hundred and eighty three.
- 2:04:21Ryan and turn animal like pause at the front of the pitching mound and rocks back.
- 2:04:26Here it comes fastball fouled out of play and Oliva hanging tough hit that one back
- 2:04:32on a line into the terrace boxes in the lower deck talking about Rod Carew is going to win
- 2:04:36his third batting title here as a man right now standing there that has three silver bats
- 2:04:41in his den.
- 2:04:43Oh Lava out of the batter's box now back in that widespread characteristic stance.
- 2:04:49Ryan with all those gestures talking to the camp he leans back one to pitch to Oliva popped
- 2:04:55up.
- 2:04:56It'll be Parker again or will it be Pinson.
- 2:04:58It is the right fielder Pinson who comes into shallow right field to make the catch and
- 2:05:02Oliva has the monkey off his back here comes Harmon Killebrew two outs in the ninth inning.
- 2:05:11Nolan Ryan has struck out 15 to tie Sandy Goff back to 382.
- 2:05:19Killebrew doubled in two in the first walked in the third he struck out swinging in the
- 2:05:23fifth and again in the seventh power against power.
- 2:05:27Ryan rocks the pitch fastball high and away ball one that arm has to be tired surely doing
- 2:05:35a lot of this on adrenaline the pitch curve ball is in there one and one.
- 2:05:43Carew has popped up Oliva with a pop fly to right.
- 2:05:47The game score is four to four.
- 2:05:50The strikeout score is three eighty two to three eighty two.
- 2:05:54Ryan and Kofax boils down to the final series in September and Ryan who has set American
- 2:06:02League records eight straight consecutive batters struck out last year the American
- 2:06:07League strikeout champion two straight years now has a 1 1 pitch on Killebrew on its way
- 2:06:13outside a curve and tallboard calls time and goes out to chat with his pitcher.
- 2:06:20Ryan has to be exhausted from the opening pitch tonight.
- 2:06:23You could see that Nolan was throwing everything all of his body into every delivery and with
- 2:06:30the 15 strikeouts and six walks plus seven hits he has worked a lot.
- 2:06:36He's thrown many a pitch as we said he was nearly 70 through the first three innings.
- 2:06:43Ryan perched calling upon some reserve from somewhere takes another walk a nervous walk
- 2:06:49and now back up on top.
- 2:06:50Two and one to Killebrew the wind the pitch curve is low three and one over the plate
- 2:06:58but downstairs and Ryan wants another ball on deck.
- 2:07:02Jim Holt Holt struck out his first two times but then popped up and single ninth inning
- 2:07:09two outs time called Freddie Frederico goes out to the mound.
- 2:07:14It could be that Ryan has developed a blister.
- 2:07:17We'll see Frederico asking Nolan if he's OK and it could be between innings.
- 2:07:27Nolan said that his shoulder was stiffening that he did not feel right and the Angels
- 2:07:32no matter how important that record may be tonight or this season they would not want
- 2:07:38to risk the talent of this fine right hander just to get a record.
- 2:07:43Frederico leaves that could have been just to give Ryan extra breather.
- 2:07:50Nevertheless Frederico is back in the dugout Ryan on the rubber three balls and a strike.
- 2:07:55Here's the pitch fastball lined up the middle for a base hit.
- 2:07:58So Killebrew single sharply on a 3 1 fastball and on a 4 4 tie the twins have the go ahead
- 2:08:06score at first base and Jim Holt is the better.
- 2:08:10You could see Ryan shoulders just sink when that one was hit by him.
- 2:08:15He is acting like a man who knows he doesn't have much left although the bullpen finds
- 2:08:22no one throwing for the Angels.
- 2:08:25Rich Reese veteran first baseman who has gone from Minnesota to Detroit now back to the
- 2:08:31twins will pinch run for Harmon Killebrew and if the game should go extra innings then
- 2:08:37Reese would stay to play first base.
- 2:08:42Jim Holt has struck out twice he is 1 for 4 in the game and now the bullpen bell is
- 2:08:48ringing for the Angels and a left hander begins to throw Steve Barber the veteran Holt the
- 2:08:54batter the pitch by Ryan low and inside ball one and Ryan's shrugging the shoulder as that
- 2:09:01one got away from him.
- 2:09:03Dave Self joins Barber in the bullpen.
- 2:09:05Ryan checks raised the pitch fastball hit foul off to the left and the scramble on for that
- 2:09:13souvenir one ball one strike on Jim Holt.
- 2:09:19It has been an incredible evening in a fantastic year 15 strikeouts tonight one one pitch line
- 2:09:27drive left field charging the ball is Barry he's got it and Ryan fails to get the strikeout
- 2:09:32in the ninth inning but does get the twins no runs one hit and one left to the bottom
- 2:09:39of the ninth inning of four four times.
- 2:09:43Steve Barber and Dave Dave sells continue to throw out in the bullpen for the Angels and
- 2:09:48it could be if the Angels do not score in the bottom of the ninth inning Nolan Ryan
- 2:09:53is through for the night.
- 2:09:56He has to be at a point where he just doesn't have too much gas left.
- 2:10:01The Angels will try to get him a run in the bottom of the ninth inning and if they do
- 2:10:05it would be Ryan's seventh consecutive win just tacking another win onto an angel record.
- 2:10:13Barry Gallagher and Parker to face Campbell a right hander Bill Campbell he winds and
- 2:10:19the pitch fastball in the outside corner for a strike.
- 2:10:23I like what you see in this young right hander he is only 25 years old he's from Michigan
- 2:10:28Highland Park Michigan a suburb of Detroit 6 3 and 185 but he lives in San Diego curveball
- 2:10:33hangs inside one and one.
- 2:10:38He was the strikeout king in the Southern League last year.
- 2:10:42And a great era 2.4 2.
- 2:10:49The 1 1 delivery from the side is grounded foul by Barry 1 and 2.
- 2:11:00All is quiet now at the big a 9100 with us.
- 2:11:03They have been able to cheer Nolan Ryan's 15th strikeout which tied Sandy Colfax's all
- 2:11:08time single season record at 382.
- 2:11:12We're in the bottom of the ninth for a piece.
- 2:11:15The pitch high 2 and 2.
- 2:11:18Campbell has a great assortment of pitches and pitching positions.
- 2:11:22He comes over the top three quarters and sidearm.
- 2:11:25He changes off both the fastball and the curve.
- 2:11:29To two pitch ground ball by the mound off a thrown bat charging his trail he can't make
- 2:11:36the play and Barry has a base hit all rolled out into the grass and shallow center field
- 2:11:41and crew goes out to get it.
- 2:11:43The angels have the winning run on in the bottom of the ninth inning and we're going
- 2:11:46to pause right here for station identification.
- 2:11:49This is the angels radio network.
- 2:12:04Al Gallagher is the batter.
- 2:12:06Rich Reese comes over to talk with the young pitcher Bill Campbell.
- 2:12:09Barry the base runner at first carrying the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:12:13If the angels can score it Nolan Ryan can celebrate his 21st win of the year.
- 2:12:19Gallagher way up on the handle.
- 2:12:21The situation calls for the sacrifice and the Minnesota twins are playing it that way.
- 2:12:25Third baseman Satterholm weighing on the grass.
- 2:12:27They charge as Gallagher squares, bunts and misses the ball.
- 2:12:31Strike one.
- 2:12:33Middle wall goes out to talk with Campbell.
- 2:12:39As soon as the pitch is made is charging hard from first Peru breaking toward first to cover
- 2:12:45shortstop Terrell has second base and of course Satterholm also charging in on Gallagher hoping
- 2:12:50to get the ball if it's funded hard and make the play at second base.
- 2:12:56The outfield very shallow.
- 2:13:00Gallagher squares.
- 2:13:02He's already given himself up.
- 2:13:04Campbell's pitch, but it foul two strikes on Gallagher.
- 2:13:16Well he certainly lived up to the name of the thing he's trying to do sacrifice.
- 2:13:22He had given himself up long before Campbell delivered the ball but went after a high fastball
- 2:13:27and bonded it foul two strikes the cat will see if he's still up there to sacrifice.
- 2:13:32The fans think so and he swears outside one and two.
- 2:13:40Can bury with an infield hit as he bounded one over the mound at behind second base to
- 2:13:45start this ninth inning and again that scoreboard is locked even four runs eight hits two errors
- 2:13:51for each side.
- 2:13:53Billy Parker kneels in the on deck circle.
- 2:13:57One into the count on Gallagher dirty Al way up on the handle.
- 2:14:00Here's the pitch.
- 2:14:01He's got a good response and a good bunch of first but Reese has a play at second get
- 2:14:04one out there back to first base a double play.
- 2:14:09It's got to be terribly frustrating to Bobby Winkle.
- 2:14:17The angels just cannot buy a sacrifice if you know of any around I'm sure the price
- 2:14:22would would not be too high for Winkle.
- 2:14:24He likes like to have fun.
- 2:14:26One man who can bunt the bull.
- 2:14:30He got a bunt but for two outs and here's Billy Parker with two gone.
- 2:14:34That's the fourth double play the angels have hit into tonight.
- 2:14:37It goes three six four the pitch to Parker is low a breaking ball.
- 2:14:45Jeff Torborg on deck the angel bullpen continues to throw some drama involved here as to whether
- 2:14:53Ryan will continue in the 10th inning.
- 2:14:55It's probably up to Nolan himself high and inside to a note of Parker.
- 2:15:05Four double plays that certainly supported the twins pitching tonight to know on Parker.
- 2:15:17Here's the pitch right down the middle to and one.
- 2:15:22Some of the fans of course cheering for this game to go extra innings because understandably
- 2:15:26they're here and they would like to see Ryan set the strikeout record tonight but they
- 2:15:30may not see Ryan in the 10th curve ball is waved at and foul to and to two balls two
- 2:15:43strikes to Parker.
- 2:15:46If we go to the 10th inning George Mitterwald Eric Soderholm and Mike Adams are scheduled
- 2:15:51for Minnesota to and to Parker the batter.
- 2:16:00Young Bill Campbell on the mound right hander has his sign and here's the pitch fly ball
- 2:16:08into right center field over goes Holt the right fielder and the center fielder Brian
- 2:16:12comes over to make the catch in front of him.
- 2:16:15We go to extra innings and let's say we're going to wait to see first if Nolan Ryan is
- 2:16:19going to come out of that dugout.
- 2:16:20As yet he has not made an appearance but that could be because Paul Borgat is catching gear
- 2:16:26off and was in the on deck circle.
- 2:16:29It's a 4 4 tie and here he comes.
- 2:16:33Ryan will pitch the 10th inning.
- 2:16:38After nine innings tonight the totals for the twins and the angels four runs eight hits
- 2:16:54two errors.
- 2:16:55Nolan Ryan has struck out 15 he is tied with Kovacs at 382 needs one more to set a new
- 2:17:01major league record and he'll get the chance in the 10th inning as we turn it back to Dave
- 2:17:06Nehau thank you Dick I have been lucky enough to be on the air for two of Nolan Ryan's epic
- 2:17:14feats this year and I hope that this is the opportunity for the third.
- 2:17:19First of all on the 19th of September he struck out Bill Sudeikis for the 350th.
- 2:17:27Here's the pitch slider outside George Minerall want to know to break through Baudel's mark
- 2:17:35and then his last outing when he struck out Steve Brie next pitch.
- 2:17:38Or is it yes it is strike call one ball and one strike.
- 2:17:44That was number 10 for the 22nd time this year he has done that and now he is only one
- 2:17:50strike cut away from becoming the all time strikeout king the pitch slider outside two
- 2:17:55balls and one strike.
- 2:17:57Dr. Joe Zrasinski the angel position Dave has been kind enough to call us and the reason
- 2:18:01why Ryan has been looked after he has a muscle cramp in the leg.
- 2:18:05The two two pitch line drive they sit over the outstretched glove of Dave Chalk.
- 2:18:09So George Minerall singles sharply to left here in the 10th inning.
- 2:18:14It is in the leg apparently because of the heat of the evening I'm sure that Nolan with
- 2:18:18all the pitches he's thrown has perspired heavily throughout the night and they feel
- 2:18:23that that could be the cause just a muscle cramp due to the loss of body salt and that's
- 2:18:28why there have been some delays between innings and why Freddie Federico went out to the mound
- 2:18:32in the last inning.
- 2:18:33Well here is the only man that Nolan Ryan has not struck out tonight Eric Satterholm
- 2:18:39the pitch to him around a bunch takes a fastball outside one ball and no strikes.
- 2:18:43Satterholm walked in the first bounced into a double play in the third flied out to right
- 2:18:48in the sixth and walked in the eighth the only man that Nolan Ryan has not struck out
- 2:18:54in the lineup.
- 2:18:55That would be now with the exception of Rich Reese who came on defensively in the ninth
- 2:18:58inning for Minnesota.
- 2:19:00The stretch and a throw to first base.
- 2:19:03McCraw was not on the bag at first and George Minerall was back easily.
- 2:19:07One ball and no strikes on Satterholm again the stretch by Ryan and the pitch around a
- 2:19:11bunch he does at the first base line it is a foul ball so called by Red Flairity.
- 2:19:16One ball and one strike the count on Satterholm.
- 2:19:19A 4-4 tie we're in the 10th.
- 2:19:23Nolan Ryan if you've just tuned in we certainly hope you have not just tuned in because Nolan
- 2:19:28has tied the all-time mark in Sandy Colfax by striking out 15 his victim being Steve
- 2:19:33Bry.
- 2:19:34Bry was his 382nd victim this year the stretch.
- 2:19:39Satterholm around a bunch faked a bunch and then pulled the bat back and take a slider
- 2:19:42outside two balls and one strike.
- 2:19:44Alan Gallagher is playing about 45 feet away from Eric Satterholm.
- 2:19:52Satterholm hits one on the button Gallagher doesn't have a chance.
- 2:19:56The stretch Satterholm faking as if to bun swings away and sends a ground ball to second
- 2:20:00chalk goes to the bag himself throws to first that's a double play.
- 2:20:06So Satterholm indeed not bunning as he pulled the bat back and took the full swing but
- 2:20:12grounded a chalk for the 6-4-3 double play.
- 2:20:15Two down in the 10th and here's Mike Adams and Freddy Federico goes out to have a chalk
- 2:20:20chat with Nolan Ryan and Dave Nolan really does not have near the stuff he enjoyed earlier
- 2:20:26in the game and that's to be understood but he is not overpowering the hitters he's getting
- 2:20:30them out and I guess he's just returning to what hitters would call a normal good major
- 2:20:35league pitcher he's not able to really blow that fastball by them now and I guess the
- 2:20:40toll of all the pitches that he has thrown has taken something out of that right arm.
- 2:20:45Mike Adams has struck out two of the four times that he has faced Nolan Ryan.
- 2:20:50The wind and the pitch to the right handed batting Adams is a fastball first strike on
- 2:20:54one and there's a roar and you're going to hear it on every strike from here on out.
- 2:21:00Adams became strikeout victims number 370 and 374 in the Ryan chronology of 1973.
- 2:21:10The line by Nolan and a one strike delivery a fastball high and away and Nolan overthrowing
- 2:21:15the fastball and very awkward in his follow through one ball and one strike.
- 2:21:20He's trying to get everything on every pitch this could be the last man or the last out
- 2:21:24he faces.
- 2:21:25The 1-1 pitch to Adams low with the curve and clarity didn't give him much of a break
- 2:21:31on that pitch.
- 2:21:32Low and outside and just barely low two balls and one strike on Mike Adams.
- 2:21:38The line by Ryan the 2-1 delivery a fastball outside ball three three balls and a strike.
- 2:21:43And Ryan trying ever so hard and just missing again with that pitch.
- 2:21:483-1 Adams makes his home in Anaheim.
- 2:21:54Time call by clarity as he waits for Adams to get back in.
- 2:21:58The 3-1 pitch to Mike fastball ground ball back over the mound into center field that'll
- 2:22:02be a base hit.
- 2:22:04So Mike Adams risks one into center field and here is Jerry Terrell.
- 2:22:11Ball wasn't hit very hard at all it was almost as if Ryan was too tired to really reach down
- 2:22:15that far.
- 2:22:16He just kind of gave it a little wave as it rolled by him out toward second.
- 2:22:19Jerry Terrell is one for four he single off Ryan in the sixth.
- 2:22:24When the twin scored the tying run tied at four.
- 2:22:28Four runs nine hits for the twins four runs eight hits for the angels.
- 2:22:31Right handed batter Jerry Terrell chokes up on the bat.
- 2:22:35Line and there goes the runner from first goes all the way to the backstop a slider
- 2:22:37Torborg back to get it.
- 2:22:39Sliding on the play was Mike Adams and Adams by the slide may have cost him the extra base
- 2:22:44going to third.
- 2:22:46Be a stolen base given to Mike Adams that's the second for the youngsters this year.
- 2:22:52So the go-ahead run at second base probably more important to Ryan right now than the
- 2:22:57strikeout because the game is tied at four four.
- 2:23:01Nolan twenty and sixteen.
- 2:23:07Jerry Terrell steps back in Adams anchored at second base Ryan to the back slope of the
- 2:23:12mound out of the grass to rub up the baseball.
- 2:23:15Staring at his defense it finds it just about straight away and not too deep for Terrell.
- 2:23:25Adams away from second Ryan at the belt the one-oh delivery to Terrell strike the fastball
- 2:23:29right down the middle again that was not that real good smoke from Nolan Ryan.
- 2:23:36Terrell with his hands on his hips staring down a third base coach Ralph Rowe but the
- 2:23:40two down there's not much that Rowe can tell him.
- 2:23:46Ryan stretches the one one pitch fastball popped up on the right side of the infield
- 2:23:50he'll have to wait for another inning out in foul territory is Billy Parker to make
- 2:23:53the catch and that'll do it for the Minnesota Twins in the top half of the tenth.
- 2:23:58The twins no runs on a couple of hits no errors in a man left.
- 2:24:01We go to the bottom half of inning number ten we have a four four tie.
- 2:24:09Tall string being right hander Bill Campbell works on the Angels in the bottom half of
- 2:24:12the tenth.
- 2:24:14You look at Jeff Torborg and then Mickey Rivers and Dave Chalk Torborg in a conference with
- 2:24:18third base coach Salty Parker before he comes to the plate.
- 2:24:22The Angel both in as they bat in the bottom half of the tenth not throwing should be indicative
- 2:24:29at least right now that Nolan Ryan would probably go on to the 11th inning or that Steve Barber
- 2:24:36is already warm.
- 2:24:38On the other hand Dave and Nolan walked off the mound he didn't jog to the dugout as he
- 2:24:42normally would he walked off almost as if to say that's got to be it for me.
- 2:24:50Jeff Torborg over three right hander Bill Campbell the third twins pitcher in the game
- 2:24:55throws the curve it's been at the third base line it is a foul ball.
- 2:24:59Torborg trying to beat a bun out down the third base line but he fouls it all in one
- 2:25:04on Jeff.
- 2:25:07The twins scored three in the first the Angels came right back with three of their own in
- 2:25:11the first.
- 2:25:13The Angels went ahead four to three with a single run in the third and then the twins
- 2:25:17came back with a single run in the sixth to tie at four four and that's exactly where
- 2:25:20we are right now.
- 2:25:25One strike on Jeff Torborg.
- 2:25:28Bill Campbell a ten game winner in the Pacific Coast League kind of double rocks and the
- 2:25:32one strike pitch is laced foul off the first base side back out of play into the mezzanine
- 2:25:36section no balls and two strikes.
- 2:25:38That tight national league East Bennett race the Phillies a winner over the Pittsburgh
- 2:25:43Pirates and the Cardinals a winner over the Cubs today so the Mets have one full game
- 2:25:48lead on the Bucks two and a half over St. Louis three and a half over Montreal.
- 2:25:52The pitch now inside and low gets off the shin guard to catch your George Middowald
- 2:25:56and bounces about 15 feet to the right of home plate one and two.
- 2:26:01The Cubs are four out there just about out of it and of course the Phillies bring up
- 2:26:04the rear of nine and a devastating blow dealt however by the Phillies to Pittsburgh today
- 2:26:12in 13 three to two and one.
- 2:26:14The one two pitch to Torborg a fastball and a ground ball to the right side.
- 2:26:17Carew is there and takes it on about three hops and throws the first to Rich Reese in
- 2:26:21time for the first out in the bottom half of the tenth.
- 2:26:27Mickey Rivers two for four tonight an infield base hit in the first to ground it out in
- 2:26:31the second flight out in the fifth and single and stole his eighth base of the year in the
- 2:26:36eighth off Bill Campbell.
- 2:26:39Rivers was the first man that Campbell faced in the eighth the angels threatened but couldn't
- 2:26:43do anything about it as chalk attempting to bunt popped out to Carmen Killebrew as he
- 2:26:47bunted Frank Robinson then walked but McCraw struck out and Vincent flight out to end the
- 2:26:52threat.
- 2:26:53Right under Bill Campbell who faced Mickey Rivers I'm sure quite a few times this year
- 2:26:58in a Pacific Coast leg and Rivers sends a high drive to right field over to his left
- 2:27:02is Jim Holt and makes the catch two down.
- 2:27:07Rivers just did miss getting all of this ball hit about 300 feet right down the right field
- 2:27:12line about 30 feet in front of the 330 marker two down.
- 2:27:16Here's David Chalk.
- 2:27:20David two for three single in the first single in the third struck out in the fifth and bunted
- 2:27:26in the eighth make him two for four.
- 2:27:30Getting at 236 as he came into the game that average will move up the wine and the pistol
- 2:27:34chalk fastball outside.
- 2:27:36One ball and no strikes.
- 2:27:42Young Frank Tanana or Clyde Wright tomorrow night and then Sunday builds a Saturday.
- 2:27:47Bill Singer goes for his 20th change nicely thrown for Campbell by Campbell one strike
- 2:27:53one ball and one strike and then depending on what happens later on this evening we'll
- 2:27:58just have to wait and see about Sunday won't we.
- 2:28:01If Nolan Ryan breaks the record tonight I would doubt that the angels would chance hurting
- 2:28:04his arm the one one pitches a curve low outside two balls and one strike on Dave Chalk.
- 2:28:10They have no one throwing in the angel bullpen so apparently Brian will continue on.
- 2:28:18The line and the two one pitch chalk swings and foul tips it at the play reminds me of
- 2:28:23the ballgame.
- 2:28:24I believe we went 12 innings deck when he pitched against Detroit at Tiger Stadium in
- 2:28:28Detroit.
- 2:28:29How many pitches did he throw over 200 right.
- 2:28:31It's got to be right around that mark this evening and he won the ballgame incidentally.
- 2:28:36Two balls and two strikes on chalk.
- 2:28:38Wind by Campbell the two two pitch sidearm fastball grounded to third right there as
- 2:28:41solder on down with a tailgate throws the first and plenty of time and the angels are
- 2:28:46gone in order here in the 10th one two three.
- 2:28:48We will go to the 11th we will see if Nolan Ryan will go to the 11th waiting for his appearance
- 2:28:54nobody warming up.
- 2:28:55You'll hear a round of applause in the background as number 30 appears if indeed he will.
- 2:29:01The gates to the bullpen have not been open.
- 2:29:05John Roseboro bringing Dave chalk helmet back under handing the ball out to Jeff Torborg.
- 2:29:10Ryan has still not made the appearance.
- 2:29:12The crowd standing in anticipation the bullpen gate is being opened or not.
- 2:29:19You see John Stevenson down there standing and Jeff Nolan Ryan has not made his appearance.
- 2:29:25We will wait and see.
- 2:29:26It has not been open.
- 2:29:29Meanwhile the angel infielders just pegging the ball around.
- 2:29:32Ryan perhaps still back being worked on by trainer Freddie Frederico.
- 2:29:36A lot of the fans behind the angel dugout just standing.
- 2:29:40The angel bullpen gate still has not been open which leads one to believe that Ryan
- 2:29:44will eventually make an appearance.
- 2:29:47Red Flaherty is staring over at the angel dugout.
- 2:29:51Again Ryan is tied with Colpax at 382.
- 2:29:55Red Flaherty is asking what are you going to do.
- 2:29:58He steps over and nods yes.
- 2:30:00The angel bullpen gate still is closed and here he comes.
- 2:30:07So Nolan Ryan will go up into the 11th and we remind you that fan appreciation night
- 2:30:16here at the big A this year will include gifts for the youngsters so plan on bringing the
- 2:30:20entire family to see the angels and these twins on Saturday night when Bill Singer will
- 2:30:24be going for his 20th victory of the year.
- 2:30:26The first 8000 youngsters will receive souvenir gifts from the angels.
- 2:30:30It's first come first served for a choice among three ring binders, t-shirts, pennants
- 2:30:34and pictures.
- 2:30:35And remember the game begins at seven o'clock.
- 2:30:37That's on fan appreciation night this Saturday the 29th of September.
- 2:30:40Tickets on sale at the big A box office from nine to five thirty daily at Mutual and Liberty
- 2:30:45agencies and at UCB in Orange Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
- 2:30:50We go to the 11th so does Nolan Ryan so does Dick Ember.
- 2:30:53Thank you Dave Nolan will face the leadoff man Steve Bry, Roger Rue and Antonio Lever.
- 2:31:00Ryan has struck out 15 but he has not enjoyed a strikeout since the eighth inning.
- 2:31:04The pitch to Bry outside with a breaking ball.
- 2:31:07It could be that the delay for Ryan was the fact that with that muscle cramp they may
- 2:31:12have taken him back into the training room and Freddy Federico may have rubbed him down
- 2:31:15try to improve the circulation.
- 2:31:18The 1 0 pitch to Bry curve ball is in there.
- 2:31:23Bry singled and scored in the first, singled in the second, struck out in the fourth,
- 2:31:27hit into a double play in the sixth and he struck out in the eighth.
- 2:31:30The last man that Ryan struck out.
- 2:31:32Fastball is fouled back.
- 2:31:33So Ryan is a strikeout away.
- 2:31:36One ball and two strikes.
- 2:31:39Three hundred eighty two strikeouts are already in the bank for Nolan Ryan to equal Sandy
- 2:31:44Kofax's major league record.
- 2:31:46And now the crowd's asking, pleading, cheering for just one more.
- 2:31:52Right hander against right hander.
- 2:31:53Steve Bry up there.
- 2:31:55One ball and two strikes.
- 2:31:56Ryan into the lineup.
- 2:31:57Here's the pitch.
- 2:31:58He fouls it off.
- 2:31:59The fans cheering that one with their hearts and not their eyes.
- 2:32:00Bry took a swing.
- 2:32:01They knew he hadn't hit it into fair territory but he had clipped it foul off the mask of
- 2:32:11red clarity.
- 2:32:12It was not a strike.
- 2:32:14One and two.
- 2:32:15Steve Barber starts to throw in the bullpen.
- 2:32:18Ryan rocks back the one to pitch her ball grounded a shot up with it is shot.
- 2:32:24He throws the first one away.
- 2:32:26So again, Ryan gets two strikes on a hitter and can't put him away.
- 2:32:31And Ryan now is like the heavyweight fighter with a knockout punch that has gone so many
- 2:32:35rounds that he has his opponent staggering and staggering but doesn't have enough left
- 2:32:40to deliver that one blow that will knock him to the canvas and put him away.
- 2:32:45He's getting the two strikes on the hitters but he can't get that third.
- 2:32:49Rod Carew is 0 for 4 in the game.
- 2:32:52He has struck out three times.
- 2:32:53He has also walked and scored.
- 2:32:56And the fact that you put a collar around Carewsnik is doing enough.
- 2:33:01He's there to get a base hit.
- 2:33:02The pitch.
- 2:33:03Kerr ball outside.
- 2:33:04Ball one.
- 2:33:05Tauborg the catcher.
- 2:33:06The infield Gallagher chalk.
- 2:33:08Parker and McCraw in the outfield.
- 2:33:10Barry Rivers and Pinson from left to right.
- 2:33:12The pitch.
- 2:33:13Kerr ball strike.
- 2:33:14On the inside corner one and one.
- 2:33:22Ryan struck out three in the first two in the second one in the third the side in the
- 2:33:26fourth two in the fifth no one in the sixth but struck out the side in the seventh.
- 2:33:31The pitch.
- 2:33:32High and outside.
- 2:33:33Tried to get a little extra on the fastball and then he struck out Steve Bry as the last
- 2:33:38out in the eighth inning.
- 2:33:39That was his three hundred eighty second but failed to get anyone in the ninth or the tenth.
- 2:33:44And there's one out here in the eleven two and one to count the pitch.
- 2:33:48Kerr ball too high.
- 2:33:49Three and one on deck.
- 2:33:50Tony Oliva.
- 2:33:55And it is a great example for the fans here tonight.
- 2:33:58The nine thousand one hundred to see just the little difference.
- 2:34:02What a little difference it is between an overpowering strikeout pitcher and just a real
- 2:34:07good pitcher.
- 2:34:08The nine one pitches outside ball for breaking ball.
- 2:34:11Ryan has walked his seventh man and here comes Tony Oliva and here comes Bobby Winkle to
- 2:34:17the mound.
- 2:34:18And Winkle.
- 2:34:19Looks for the bullpen.
- 2:34:20Ryan meets him halfway to the third base foul line.
- 2:34:27And it's strictly up to Nolan Ryan.
- 2:34:29Bobby Winkle is not going to take Ryan out of the game just to preserve a win.
- 2:34:34He's not that kind of guy.
- 2:34:35He is going to let Nolan Ryan pitch as long as he wants.
- 2:34:37The only place where Winkle's might interfere with Ryan's thinking is the fact where Ryan
- 2:34:43might be well falsely courageous or foolishly so and might injure himself.
- 2:34:50Winkle's wants to protect against that and just wants to be certain that Ryan is really
- 2:34:54OK.
- 2:34:55Apparently Ryan has convinced his manager Winkle's leave.
- 2:35:01Oliva tough to strike out.
- 2:35:08Ryan got him once but that was way back in the second inning.
- 2:35:11Oliva with two hits and a walk.
- 2:35:14He's two for four.
- 2:35:16One of the truly tough outs in the American League.
- 2:35:19Harmon Killebrew on deck.
- 2:35:22Ryan looks over at Carrow the pitch fastball inside.
- 2:35:25Carrow remember has 40 stolen bases and Ryan isn't paying much attention to him.
- 2:35:37Right side open.
- 2:35:39Parker trying to cover the hole as McCraw is holding Carrow on.
- 2:35:42One ball no strikes to count.
- 2:35:44One out top of the 11th for four tied.
- 2:35:47An unearned run scored by the twins back in the sixth inning tied the game.
- 2:35:52After both clubs got three in the first and the angels took the lead with a run in the
- 2:35:56third when they chased out her day of gold.
- 2:36:00Ryan checks it through at first the pitch way outside with a curve and Ryan with each
- 2:36:06pitch you can see that he's losing a little.
- 2:36:08He does not have much left and he's paid facing some pretty tough hitters to be losing as
- 2:36:17much as he is off that fastball and the curve.
- 2:36:20And as Rich Reese of course was on deck Killebrew leaving the game for a pinch runner after
- 2:36:25he singled the last time up.
- 2:36:27Ryan does go to first and it's a fairly close play as Carrow has to dart back to the bank.
- 2:36:32Two balls no strikes.
- 2:36:34Ryan goes to first again.
- 2:36:35Oh almost got him.
- 2:36:36McCraw thought they had Carrow a good move by Ryan.
- 2:36:42Carrow did not slide and that made it terribly close.
- 2:36:48Ryan from the belt.
- 2:36:49Here's the pitch.
- 2:36:50Fastball swung on and Oliva is trying to hit that one to El Monte.
- 2:36:56Two and one.
- 2:36:59Oliva staggering out of the batter's box and his momentum carried him halfway to the screen.
- 2:37:04Now he walks back up to the plate.
- 2:37:08Ryan has struck out fifteen.
- 2:37:10He has walked seven.
- 2:37:17What a season for Nolan Ryan just wanting one more strikeout.
- 2:37:21Two on pitch.
- 2:37:22The runner goes.
- 2:37:23It's a high fly ball to left center field.
- 2:37:24Rivers easing back under it.
- 2:37:26Carrow playing it halfway will return to first as Rivers makes the catch.
- 2:37:31Let's pause for station identification from Anaheim Stadium.
- 2:37:34This is the Angels Radio Network.
- 2:37:37This is KXTC Glendale Phoenix 92.3 FM Stereo.
- 2:37:44Rich Reese the batter.
- 2:37:54The pitch swung on a miss.
- 2:37:55You can feel it through the crowd.
- 2:37:56A vibration saying maybe this is the guy.
- 2:38:03Reese he hasn't faced him yet tonight.
- 2:38:07Reese batting in Killebrew's spot.
- 2:38:09Harmon was two for four.
- 2:38:11He struck out twice.
- 2:38:12He walked.
- 2:38:13He's been two runs back in the first inning.
- 2:38:15Reese is hitting one fifty one total with the twins and the Tigers this year.
- 2:38:20Three home runs seven runs batted in one strike pitch.
- 2:38:23That goes to a swing and a miss.
- 2:38:24The throw to second base.
- 2:38:25Not in time.
- 2:38:26A close play and the crowd cheers the call of second base umpire Lou DeMiro.
- 2:38:33It was very close.
- 2:38:36The crowd wanted to run to be saved because Ryan now has two strikes on Ryan on Rich Reese.
- 2:38:45So the go ahead scores at second forty one field for a two strike pitch coming up.
- 2:38:51Ryan says here it is.
- 2:38:52It's a major league strikeout king of all time.
- 2:39:07He walks off the mound.
- 2:39:12His teammates come over to greet him one by one.
- 2:39:21From the
- 2:39:24Detroit
- 2:39:49They are still standing and sharing here at Anaheim Stadium.
- 2:39:55Nolan Ryan has already given one on core wave and they're asking him to come out one more
- 2:40:00time as the message board spells it out 383 strikeouts for Nolan Ryan.
- 2:40:06He has broken Colfax's record.
- 2:40:09Bill Campbell, the pitcher from Minnesota, stands out on the mound.
- 2:40:12He has completed his warm up tosses.
- 2:40:14The Angels fans here at Anaheim Stadium asking Ryan to come out just one more time and give
- 2:40:19him away.
- 2:40:20You know, here's where you wish baseball was like track and field when a man performs a
- 2:40:26record breaking run or field event performance.
- 2:40:31He will circle the track and acknowledge the cheers of the fans and that's what the fans
- 2:40:36are asking for right now from Nolan Ryan.
- 2:40:39Ryan, modest man, he's given him a quick wave.
- 2:40:43He is appreciative of the fans and now the champ starts.
- 2:40:47We want Nolan.
- 2:40:48We want Nolan.
- 2:40:50But they're not going to get Nolan.
- 2:40:57Frank Robinson is at the plate ready to hit bottom of the 11th inning.
- 2:41:01Bill Campbell on the mound.
- 2:41:02Oh, that's got to be one of our greatest drills.
- 2:41:06Campbell Wines, here's the pitch.
- 2:41:08Curveball swung on and missed and Robinson now would like to give Ryan a victory.
- 2:41:13The crowd still standing.
- 2:41:15And now the one by one, they settle back in their seats.
- 2:41:19Although they're chanting, we want Nolan.
- 2:41:23And fans themselves, it's interesting the conduct of the people here.
- 2:41:26They're shaking hands with each other as if they were all part of this great night.
- 2:41:31That's swinging a miss by Robinson and well, they should feel that excited.
- 2:41:35Young men, husbands and wives, friends shaking hands, embracing it just to say, yes, we saw
- 2:41:41it.
- 2:41:42We were part of it all.
- 2:41:43And that is what makes this a great game.
- 2:41:45It is perhaps the most personal of all games, all professional activity.
- 2:41:50Robinson with a check swing roller to play foul.
- 2:41:53Oh, and two.
- 2:41:54I guess there are many reasons for that.
- 2:41:56It's a game in which you get to know the players perhaps more than any other game because of
- 2:42:01the length of the season, because it is a game that is set in a more pastoral setting.
- 2:42:09You have a chance to absorb more of the activity.
- 2:42:12There is the drama of the man in the center of the diamond.
- 2:42:15Robinson knows what's going to happen.
- 2:42:16He has the ball and he has to throw it.
- 2:42:19And of course, one by one, all you had to do is count to three to appreciate what Nolan
- 2:42:23Ryan has done tonight.
- 2:42:24And the fans excited tonight.
- 2:42:269,100 were in on the new record at Anaheim Stadium.
- 2:42:30Two strike pitch to Robbie is grounded toward short.
- 2:42:32A tough play.
- 2:42:33The third baseman cuts in front, throws the first just in time to get Robbie, who was
- 2:42:37giving it all he had trying to beat that one out.
- 2:42:39Now the Angels would like to get Ryan a run.
- 2:42:42You have to feel that Ryan will not pitch in the 12th inning, that his season is over.
- 2:42:48The 383 was his goal and he has it and he has worked very hard to get it tonight.
- 2:42:55And it might be foolish for him to try to go beyond.
- 2:43:00One out.
- 2:43:01It remains tied at four.
- 2:43:03Tom McCraw has a single and three at bats.
- 2:43:06Meanwhile, Bill Campbell continues to pitch superbly in relief for Minnesota.
- 2:43:10The pitch outside corner for a called strike.
- 2:43:14So Ryan got his 380 second strikeout in the eighth inning, his 15th and his 16th of the
- 2:43:20night with two outs in the 11th.
- 2:43:22Rich Reese, the victim.
- 2:43:24Ground ball up the middle to his left goes Terrell.
- 2:43:25It's in the center field for a base hit.
- 2:43:27Oh, what an effort by Terrell as he somersaulted to the second base side of the bag trying
- 2:43:32to come up with the ball.
- 2:43:33McCraw with a one out single.
- 2:43:35The winning run is on and that would certainly cap a beautiful evening for Angel fans and
- 2:43:40for Nolan Ryan.
- 2:43:41If they could also get Ryan a victory, Ryan has given the fans the thrill that they asked
- 2:43:46for and now the Angel teammates would like to present him with a victory his 21st of
- 2:43:51the year.
- 2:43:52Vada Pinson is the batter.
- 2:43:54Pinson is 0 for 3, not going to run with a sacrifice fly back in the first inning when
- 2:43:59the Angels scored three times.
- 2:44:01Rod Carew comes in from second base to talk to Campbell.
- 2:44:04George Midderwald goes out to the mound.
- 2:44:06Well, it's quite an experience, David.
- 2:44:12I'll tell you, it's an experience that I think, I hope that we have conveyed the excitement
- 2:44:19certainly the fans here after Nolan Ryan had struck out 383 and headed for the dugout and
- 2:44:25the shots in the background.
- 2:44:28I'm trying to equate it with what I've been through before.
- 2:44:30I can't come up with anything quite like it.
- 2:44:33The only thing that was missing is about 33,000 more fans.
- 2:44:39That's right.
- 2:44:41Campbell kicks and deals and Pinson swings and misses at that good straight change.
- 2:44:46And I have to think there'll be a day soon when it won't be 9100 but maybe 39,100 and
- 2:44:54the game will not only be just for strikeouts but for the big money and a chance to get
- 2:44:58into the American League playoffs.
- 2:45:00And I guess that's what all fans for every team in the big leagues are hoping for from
- 2:45:04the first day of spring.
- 2:45:06Campbell goes the first and McRaw jumps back to the bag.
- 2:45:1016 strikeouts and Ryan has the all-time record at 383.
- 2:45:16The pitch low and a good stop by Midderwald.
- 2:45:19I've been so lucky to have been part of so many great sports moments, the two of us and
- 2:45:25certainly one that immediately comes to mind, certainly not baseball, but one of the great
- 2:45:30thrills of my life.
- 2:45:31I'm sure it was of yours is Tony Guillory's block punt of that Green Bay game and then
- 2:45:36the touchdown pass.
- 2:45:38Gabriel to Bernie Casey.
- 2:45:39That's right.
- 2:45:40That was one of the great thrills and this has to rank right there with it.
- 2:45:44The 1-1 pitch coming up from Bill Campbell.
- 2:45:46The runner goes.
- 2:45:47The pitch is lined on one hop off the shins of Terrell and McRaw will have to hold at
- 2:45:52second base.
- 2:45:53The ball was not hit as hard as Terrell thought it was.
- 2:45:55It was hit off the end of the bat so Terrell was expecting it to explode at his feet.
- 2:46:00Instead it spun at his feet and kicked off his shins and it's an air charge to Terrell.
- 2:46:05So the angels on a single and an air have the winning run in scoring position here in
- 2:46:09the 11th inning and it is Richie Scheinblum who comes out of the angel dugout.
- 2:46:16McRaw running on the play and that helped to make the play work because Terrell had
- 2:46:19to see out of his peripheral vision.
- 2:46:22McRaw racing to second and Terrell lost the play.
- 2:46:25Quillis he goes to the mound to talk to his battery.
- 2:46:27There's no one throwing in the bullpen.
- 2:46:30Scheinblum batting for Barry.
- 2:46:33I've talked to a lot of people who have been sportscasters in all of the fields hockey
- 2:46:43and basketball, baseball, football and we have enjoyed so many thrills in all the sports.
- 2:46:51But the consensus and I would have to say unanimously the biggest thrill that any man
- 2:46:57can have as a radio play-by-play announcer is to be with a team that wins a pennant and
- 2:47:02goes through and wins a World Series.
- 2:47:04They all say it that there just is no thrill quite like the day-to-day excitement of a
- 2:47:09team headed toward that one World Series championship.
- 2:47:13It's because it is such a long season as Jim Brosnan said.
- 2:47:17By golly you begin in February and it doesn't culminate until October and it is the repetition
- 2:47:24I'm sure seeing a ball club win a pennant and then it even makes it more exciting now
- 2:47:28because you have to go through the playoffs and then the World Series.
- 2:47:31Like making love from April to October.
- 2:47:35Here's the pitch to Scheinblum.
- 2:47:36He takes a low ball on.
- 2:47:38Ritchie batting left-handed and that's his strong side.
- 2:47:40Have you ever had that experience?
- 2:47:45Not going to get into that.
- 2:47:49Scheinblum the hitter.
- 2:47:50McCraw the winning run at second base.
- 2:47:52We're in the bottom of the 11th inning a 4-4 tie on Nolan Ryan night at the big A. The
- 2:47:56pitch to Ritchie inside corners says clarity.
- 2:47:59Scheinblum is jumping away from the plate.
- 2:48:05Scheinblum is hitting 313 but 352 left-handed.
- 2:48:12McCraw at second, Pinson at first, one out.
- 2:48:16The Angels trying to win it for Nolan Ryan.
- 2:48:18Campbell on the mound.
- 2:48:19His 1-1 delivery.
- 2:48:20A change is too high.
- 2:48:212-1.
- 2:48:22On deck Al Gallagher but remember Bob Oliver although he's suffering from a mild case of
- 2:48:28the flu and was not in the starting lineup is in uniform and available for pinch hitting
- 2:48:33duty.
- 2:48:34At least that's the report we received at game time.
- 2:48:37That was three hours ago and Bob may not have improved and it's conceivable he may have
- 2:48:42retired for the night.
- 2:48:43The 2-1 pitch.
- 2:48:44Swing a line drive slicing the left center field racing over his bribe goes back and
- 2:48:45it's over his head.
- 2:48:46All the way to the wall here comes McCraw.
- 2:48:47The Angels win 5-4.
- 2:48:48Nolan Ryan strikes out 383.
- 2:48:49He gets 16 tonight and the Angels help him to celebrate all of more.
- 2:48:50His seventh straight.
- 2:48:51He's going to be the first to make it to the top of the
- 2:49:09Minnesota Twins 5-4 and 11 innings.
- 2:49:16Shine Bloom's line shot to left center field tearing over the head of Steve Rye and his
- 2:49:23rule to double and the Angels certainly one of the finest moments in Anaheim Stadium's
- 2:49:30history have won a game.
- 2:49:31Nolan Ryan has won the hearts of his many fans with another incredible performance of
- 2:49:39Herculean effort.
- 2:49:40He goes 11 innings to get his 16th strikeout and his 383rd for the year.
- 2:49:45There are so many records to talk about but what really is important now is we get to
- 2:49:50see Nolan Ryan and that's coming up in just a moment.
