- 0:16Speaker 1: Give a break down off.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Piece that I work.
- 0:19Speaker 2: But I have secrets, but we'll start with that. But
- 0:21Speaker 2: what's going on, everybody? I'm the one, the only w
- 0:23Speaker 2: O O K. I E joined here by some of
- 0:26Speaker 2: the misfits. We have no sheep this week, but we
- 0:29Speaker 2: do have and he walks through, Oh, I'm sorry, what
- 0:32Speaker 2: do we got? We got the Minnesota deuce or the
- 0:36Speaker 2: Roseville deuce? What do you call it?
- 0:38Speaker 3: Right?
- 0:39Speaker 4: Well, it's very fitting today, boys, it's very fitting today.
- 0:42Speaker 4: So hello keeper George family. It is great to be
- 0:47Speaker 4: here a little smelly, but I am happy to be
- 0:50Speaker 4: with you this sevening. Yes I am.
- 0:53Speaker 2: And we got the draft score of the Draz Corps,
- 0:57Speaker 2: Draz Corps of the Drazzcore. I'll get that one. That's right,
- 1:01Speaker 2: the Draz Corps. How's going everyone, Let's just say hi Dravescore.
- 1:08Speaker 2: And we figured we'd round out the year because this
- 1:10Speaker 2: is our last episode boys until the eighth of January,
- 1:15Speaker 2: last episode of twenty twenty five. We figured we'd round
- 1:18Speaker 2: out the year with a thrilling Q and A with
- 1:23Speaker 2: Skyjedi himself. Mister Luke Luke, welcome a boy.
- 1:27Speaker 3: How are you doing, guys doing? Having me? So?
- 1:31Speaker 4: Is Luke?
- 1:31Speaker 5: Actually your last name?
- 1:32Speaker 3: Is that?
- 1:32Speaker 5: Why you're mister Luke Luke?
- 1:34Speaker 3: I know Luke is the first name. Yeah, Luke Luke
- 1:39Speaker 3: the super unique last name of Olsen, so you know.
- 1:44Speaker 4: We're I thought he was going to be shock oh
- 1:48Speaker 4: all right, Olsen twins. I thought he was still going
- 1:51Speaker 4: to lean into the Worlie Ball and Champion of Champions. Yeah, like,
- 1:57Speaker 4: this is really where you need to be going.
- 1:59Speaker 3: This is what's what I'm all about. I did bring
- 2:02Speaker 3: home my Worthyball trophy, and my youngest daughter immediately stole it,
- 2:07Speaker 3: so I no longer have that.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Good as any good uh good dad will do. Here
- 2:12Speaker 4: you go, It's all right, here you go. No, no, no,
- 2:16Speaker 4: what is mine? What is mine is yours? And it
- 2:19Speaker 4: is definitely yours and not mine anymore.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Exactly, And what is yours is yours. But now that
- 2:25Speaker 2: I own a three D printer, I definitely plan on
- 2:27Speaker 2: first thing printing out awesome worldly ball championship trophies.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Well, there you go.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, they'll be available in twenty twenty six. Maybe.
- 2:37Speaker 4: And I was not there for a worli ball, but
- 2:41Speaker 4: I understand.
- 2:42Speaker 2: H I'll stock at that.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Doesn't work out, you could just start a career worlely ball.
- 2:48Speaker 4: That's what I hear.
- 2:49Speaker 3: I mean sometimes you have hidden talents for things. Yeah.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Competitive, that's definitely a thing.
- 2:56Speaker 5: Is there a professional league for worlyball is got to be.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Like, yeah, no, not yet. I mean ship pickleball is
- 3:04Speaker 2: a professional sport, not worlely ball.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Mine as well.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Oh gosh, I remember playing ball in high school league.
- 3:13Speaker 3: There is a whirley ball league in the Twin Cities.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Here is that professional?
- 3:19Speaker 3: Oh?
- 3:21Speaker 4: No, in Chicago? Competition Minnesota?
- 3:26Speaker 2: Oh, there is a twenty twenty There is a whorlely
- 3:29Speaker 2: Ball Nationals. Yeah, book your spot. Is it also in Roseville?
- 3:37Speaker 4: No, that's that is competition coming back to Chicagoland.
- 3:44Speaker 2: This one's in North Milwaukee, Avenue and Vernon Hills, Illinois. Oh,
- 3:51Speaker 2: the whorlely Ball Rebels League. Never mind, we're not here
- 3:54Speaker 2: to talk about worlelyball. You know, what we're here for.
- 4:00Speaker 2: We're to ask Luke questions, right, That's what we're all here.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Don't ask all at once, so to be fair, right
- 4:06Speaker 2: and to make everybody in the key Forge community happen.
- 4:10Speaker 2: You guys want to know what I did, How I
- 4:12Speaker 2: generated these questions, How I did the questions? Did you
- 4:16Speaker 2: ask I to do this? I totally asked chat gy
- 4:18Speaker 2: Pete form questions.
- 4:21Speaker 5: I think you know we all know, just you know,
- 4:26Speaker 5: reading our discord how much.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Everyone loves Ai. Yeah, yeah, so just to piss off
- 4:33Speaker 2: the entire community.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Answer no, no, no, no, please, you gotta be nice
- 4:42Speaker 3: to the robot.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Yeah, add more SaaS and sarcasm.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I don't even remember what my pom was.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I got that.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Perfect, all right, So I did not. I did not
- 4:58Speaker 4: go ahead and ask chatchy. I put my own questions
- 5:01Speaker 4: in for what it is worth?
- 5:02Speaker 2: Where nice is it? The one highlighted in green?
- 5:08Speaker 4: I'm starting. I will put some in little bit little
- 5:11Speaker 4: will you got this now?
- 5:13Speaker 2: I don't even know what our question? All right, Well,
- 5:15Speaker 2: answer ask your questions then.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Well I want to start off Luke. We know that
- 5:22Speaker 4: you've been a fan of keyfordge from early on, UH
- 5:25Speaker 4: and the game has been important both as a player
- 5:28Speaker 4: and now in a different role as being a game designer.
- 5:32Speaker 4: What game mechanics are your favorites from previous designers, so
- 5:36Speaker 4: you don't have to throw yourself on her, but like
- 5:38Speaker 4: from previous designers would have been your fa.
- 5:42Speaker 3: So I have a like one of my favorite ax
- 5:44Speaker 3: is from math Mutations. It's a sin deck, but it
- 5:48Speaker 3: also has an auto encoder in it. But that's not
- 5:52Speaker 3: that's only part of the equation. The other half of
- 5:54Speaker 3: the equation is the there's a untamed house with a
- 5:59Speaker 3: couple cephalos, a couple of fan dangles, and then it's
- 6:04Speaker 3: got three daughters in it as well. So the game
- 6:09Speaker 3: plan there is the win. The winning thing is all
- 6:14Speaker 3: about getting your sins out and doing shenanigans with that.
- 6:18Speaker 3: But until that happens, you just kind of flood the
- 6:21Speaker 3: board with all these crazy, awesome creatures and you force
- 6:24Speaker 3: your opponent to respond to all these creatures because they
- 6:26Speaker 3: can win the game on their own if you let them.
- 6:30Speaker 3: But then as they're dealing with all that, you kind
- 6:31Speaker 3: of save up all the disc stuff and you just
- 6:33Speaker 3: throw it at them at the end. So it's a
- 6:36Speaker 3: it's a fun The fun mechanic there, I really like,
- 6:42Speaker 3: is like throwing you off by playing this strategy that
- 6:49Speaker 3: not a lot of people would really go for and
- 6:53Speaker 3: just making you target all these little guys and having
- 6:56Speaker 3: to deal with them and just slow you down just enough.
- 7:00Speaker 4: So quality of creatures and board flood is what you're doing.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Yeah, sounds like one.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Of those weird JDG strategies.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Probably, Well that's not said. Right, he'stone man, Right.
- 7:13Speaker 2: He's quick. He's also done an auto and coder where
- 7:16Speaker 2: like he basically discouraged his entire deck to get everything
- 7:19Speaker 2: in his archives. And I think that's what I played
- 7:21Speaker 2: against him in in was that final refrain to pay
- 7:27Speaker 2: the first game, and I was like, okay, and about
- 7:29Speaker 2: halfway through the game, I finally figured out what he
- 7:31Speaker 2: was doing, and I'm like, because it was definitely not
- 7:33Speaker 2: the way Ewok played it. Mm hmm nope, so okay.
- 7:40Speaker 5: So so, Luke, you mentioned auto encoder. M hm, Now,
- 7:46Speaker 5: so why would you purge logos before reprinting auto and
- 7:50Speaker 5: coder if you like Auto on and coder so much.
- 7:53Speaker 3: I do like auto encoder a lot. It's pretty cool,
- 7:56Speaker 3: but uh good one, it's pretty cool. Uh logo? Was
- 8:00Speaker 3: it just it. Uh. More Wise, it was just a
- 8:05Speaker 3: really good opportunity to kind of shake up what KeyForge was.
- 8:13Speaker 3: And Logos is by far my favorite house in the
- 8:15Speaker 3: entire thing, and I'm very sad to see it go,
- 8:18Speaker 3: but I'm also.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Because that I'm not.
- 8:25Speaker 3: But yeah, it has become quite a dominant house too,
- 8:28Speaker 3: and it kind of has been known for one thing
- 8:31Speaker 3: and then it has continued to grow and it's kind
- 8:33Speaker 3: of a little jack of old trades now, so it
- 8:37Speaker 3: was kind of bittersweet seeing it go, but it's also like, okay,
- 8:41Speaker 3: now we can kind of do a little bit of
- 8:45Speaker 3: a reset and kind of spread off some of the
- 8:48Speaker 3: power to other houses.
- 8:50Speaker 5: M hm, So tell me, I'm real carrious. How did
- 8:54Speaker 5: this play out in the office when when this idea
- 8:57Speaker 5: was being formed. Did you like walk in with like
- 8:59Speaker 5: a ghost card and a big knife and just like
- 9:02Speaker 5: stab it like right on ctp's desk or something and
- 9:04Speaker 5: be like we should murder Logos?
- 9:06Speaker 2: Like is that how it lent?
- 9:07Speaker 3: Or dark board than knives?
- 9:10Speaker 5: I guess, ok, you put all these houses on a
- 9:15Speaker 5: dartboard or you were targeting.
- 9:18Speaker 3: No, it's uh, it was just one one of those
- 9:21Speaker 3: things like hey, we're thinking about doing this and like,
- 9:24Speaker 3: so let's kind of just play out the scenarios and like, okay,
- 9:28Speaker 3: what houses would be leaving and which ones make sense
- 9:31Speaker 3: to leave, and how can we work this in thematically
- 9:35Speaker 3: and more wise and making it.
- 9:37Speaker 2: What house is too good now and literally as bad
- 9:40Speaker 2: at that?
- 9:41Speaker 3: I mean, that was part of it. Everything is kind
- 9:44Speaker 3: of a everything is all part of the thing my
- 9:50Speaker 3: dog is now just broken into.
- 9:52Speaker 4: But so it wasn't part of our story plan that
- 9:56Speaker 4: Logos was chosen by all individuals playing our storyline.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Uh No, Logos was ta.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Yeah, that was.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I say Marcus gave this one away. He
- 10:11Speaker 2: said that Logos was always getting it.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Well I think, I mean, I think that if you
- 10:16Speaker 4: actually look at it with its at houses and so,
- 10:19Speaker 4: there were clues that were there that it wasn't just
- 10:22Speaker 4: basically what we were playing for, but there was something
- 10:24Speaker 4: else and it could have been too from the top
- 10:26Speaker 4: two houses pulled. I think that Logos honestly has run
- 10:30Speaker 4: away with you said Jack of all Trades. But I
- 10:33Speaker 4: really think that it's acquired efficiency Amber control increase. Uh
- 10:40Speaker 4: we now have uh steel playing multiple like efficiency through
- 10:46Speaker 4: multiple cars. It's just gained so many different solid mechanics
- 10:51Speaker 4: that it's a little concerning in that manner. So hopefully
- 10:56Speaker 4: we will see the reset as you talk about as
- 10:59Speaker 4: being able to level out some of those components and
- 11:03Speaker 4: really dished them out to other houses.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and it was I think when like originally assigning
- 11:10Speaker 3: all of the houses, like here's their special thing that
- 11:14Speaker 3: they do. I don't I'm not sure how much they
- 11:18Speaker 3: knew efficiency was going to be a big thing in
- 11:22Speaker 3: the game, as big as it could possibly as it was,
- 11:27Speaker 3: So I think having that kind of locked into one
- 11:30Speaker 3: house kind of kind of limited the design space there,
- 11:37Speaker 3: whereas now we can kind of spread it out and
- 11:40Speaker 3: like there's no draw house anymore.
- 11:43Speaker 4: I mean, we were going all the way back. Logos
- 11:46Speaker 4: was a favorite house from earliest designer on, so that
- 11:50Speaker 4: doesn't typically surprise me. But yeah, I mean, Luke, you
- 11:53Speaker 4: play other games. We have played other games as well,
- 11:55Speaker 4: board games to other card games. Efficiency is still extremely
- 12:00Speaker 4: especially with the idea that I'm not drawing one card
- 12:04Speaker 4: at a time, but if I can refill my hand completely,
- 12:09Speaker 4: then yes, the more efficiency I gain, it's extremely important
- 12:12Speaker 4: on the game.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:16Speaker 5: So so so, actually you mentioned something interesting there. You said, Hey,
- 12:19Speaker 5: the original designers I'm curious, like how much or how
- 12:24Speaker 5: often have you gone and talked and discussed with that
- 12:29Speaker 5: original crew to sort of like download what they were
- 12:32Speaker 5: thinking when when they originally created key Forge versus you know,
- 12:40Speaker 5: just sort of extrapolating what they were thinking based on
- 12:42Speaker 5: what you see in the cards.
- 12:44Speaker 3: There's a lot of extrapolation. I've never actually talked directly
- 12:47Speaker 3: to any of the other designers some Michael has I believe.
- 12:52Speaker 4: But.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Yeah, no, that's not an option that was give it
- 12:58Speaker 3: or put it forward to me.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Well, i mean they, i mean not in the same
- 13:02Speaker 4: company at all anymore, right.
- 13:03Speaker 3: So you know it's different. Well yeah, but like we
- 13:09Speaker 3: have like a bunch of their notes and a bunch
- 13:11Speaker 3: of like they're all design documents and stuff like that.
- 13:14Speaker 3: So that's always interesting to go back and read through
- 13:16Speaker 3: and kind of get in their mind space about what
- 13:20Speaker 3: they were thinking and what they were doing.
- 13:23Speaker 5: What's the juiciest thing in those notes? You can tell
- 13:25Speaker 5: us some juicy.
- 13:30Speaker 3: You know, I mean, I mean there it's a game
- 13:34Speaker 3: designer like, no, it's it's there's no gospel there.
- 13:42Speaker 5: It's it's not like, uh, you'll just two thousand dollars
- 13:48Speaker 5: on Sleepy Dragons to find out. Well, I've already done that,
- 13:53Speaker 5: so yeah, so now you'll find out whenever it gets.
- 13:56Speaker 2: To well, so okay, fair enough.
- 14:04Speaker 4: God God will be so I know, I don't know,
- 14:07Speaker 4: I got sidetracked there. What I am seeing is FFG
- 14:11Speaker 4: talking with early designers. They had a multiple year plan
- 14:16Speaker 4: that was kind of laid out for what sets we're
- 14:18Speaker 4: going to be produced, and just in general terms, can
- 14:22Speaker 4: you go ahead and tell us is there still a
- 14:24Speaker 4: plan in existence, kind of a framework for how far
- 14:28Speaker 4: out you guys are working and realize that there's multiple
- 14:32Speaker 4: different tiers kind of early stage developments, and then kind
- 14:35Speaker 4: of like refining as you go.
- 14:36Speaker 3: In, Like so we're deep into shattered realities at the moment,
- 14:43Speaker 3: but we're always thinking forward onto the next thing. Like
- 14:47Speaker 3: so we're thinking about the next set after that, and
- 14:49Speaker 3: like some mechanics and some directions we want to kind
- 14:53Speaker 3: of go with that. Usually we start with like a
- 14:56Speaker 3: lower wise like here's what is kind of happening in
- 14:58Speaker 3: the crucible, so then we can roll into what houses
- 15:02Speaker 3: makes sense for this next house, and like what can
- 15:05Speaker 3: make mechanics we can bring in and make things interesting
- 15:10Speaker 3: for what lore we want to kind of.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Uh develop which one is as a top down or
- 15:17Speaker 2: bottom up? I can never remember.
- 15:19Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 15:22Speaker 2: More ones like you have based and yeah, ones you
- 15:26Speaker 2: have like you have the cards you want to produce
- 15:28Speaker 2: and you make the story match them, and then the
- 15:30Speaker 2: others you have the story and then you make the
- 15:32Speaker 2: cards match the story.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Like it's it's a give and take, like it's never
- 15:38Speaker 3: just one way or the other. Like so if we
- 15:41Speaker 3: find a really cool idea like, oh, let's work this
- 15:44Speaker 3: into the story somehow.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Who writes the story? And where can I read them?
- 15:50Speaker 3: Who writes this story? Michael is mostly in charge of
- 15:53Speaker 3: the story, okay, with the key Forge at the moment.
- 15:56Speaker 4: And where you write the story every time you play
- 15:59Speaker 4: key Forge, that's your.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right, And the real story is the friends
- 16:04Speaker 3: made along the way.
- 16:05Speaker 4: There you go. Well, and my question is how much
- 16:12Speaker 4: does competitive play as competitive play podcast that's where we
- 16:15Speaker 4: originally used to be.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Let's be honest, we're talking at this point.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Have we even made it to that level? I don't
- 16:24Speaker 4: even know if we're at that we're there?
- 16:27Speaker 2: My question.
- 16:30Speaker 4: Fortunately, unfortunately I did now I was over here. My
- 16:36Speaker 4: question really comes though, how much does competitive play have
- 16:39Speaker 4: an impact once you start to see what cards and
- 16:44Speaker 4: what decks and what is impacting the present meta? Does
- 16:48Speaker 4: that impact the next set? Do you guys ever go
- 16:51Speaker 4: back and readjust kind of before the next set comes.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Out, and.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like it. It definitely matters if you look
- 17:00Speaker 3: at even there are cards in neighbor Skies that were
- 17:04Speaker 3: put in there just specifically to go after what Grim
- 17:08Speaker 3: Reminders was doing in the meta.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Boo, oh that's me Cloud, My bad. That's fine, I'm
- 17:15Speaker 2: gonna mute my mic Well.
- 17:17Speaker 4: I mean, I think that it's an important, like there's
- 17:19Speaker 4: an idea of firefighting where we have to put out
- 17:21Speaker 4: this immediate issue, especially when we have dominant cards or
- 17:26Speaker 4: dominant sets, but also the idea then for thinking of
- 17:30Speaker 4: how is this going to impact the game long term?
- 17:32Speaker 4: With Keyboards being an evergreen game, the idea that it
- 17:36Speaker 4: could still be played puts a lot of different parameters
- 17:40Speaker 4: and constraints on a game designer than many other CCGs.
- 17:45Speaker 4: It's incredibly difficult to be able to balance.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it is. It's on my mind pretty much
- 17:52Speaker 3: every single day working on these cards and to make
- 17:57Speaker 3: things interesting without making things broken. And that's it's always
- 18:04Speaker 3: a it's always a very narrow path that you kind
- 18:09Speaker 3: of have to walk on there.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Yeah, do you essentially have like a point system or
- 18:15Speaker 4: something that you're giving to individual cards so that you
- 18:18Speaker 4: can keep it relatively balanced?
- 18:22Speaker 3: No, nothing like official like that. I kind of have
- 18:25Speaker 3: an idea of like here's kind of what I want,
- 18:31Speaker 3: Like here's the uh, how do I describe this the
- 18:38Speaker 3: the power that I want to design for a rare card,
- 18:41Speaker 3: for instance, in a like a different gradations between rare,
- 18:45Speaker 3: uncommon and common cards. And that's mostly kind of how
- 18:51Speaker 3: we have to go with that, and then a kind
- 18:56Speaker 3: of go from there from with things, and then we
- 19:00Speaker 3: have a bunch of levers that we can pull on
- 19:02Speaker 3: to try to balance things out during play testing.
- 19:09Speaker 2: All right, anything else there, mister ewok?
- 19:13Speaker 4: I just that was a twenty minute QUI, well we're
- 19:19Speaker 4: having follow ups?
- 19:20Speaker 2: Go ahead?
- 19:20Speaker 5: Dress Well, no, no, I think, uh so, I guess
- 19:26Speaker 5: my follow on onto that is a slightly slightly different
- 19:30Speaker 5: like related, but so like I'm just imagining. So you're
- 19:35Speaker 5: like one dude, right, yes, last night, last checked right
- 19:40Speaker 5: nost of the time, all right, and like there's a
- 19:42Speaker 5: lot of cards in this game, right.
- 19:44Speaker 3: There are just a few.
- 19:47Speaker 5: Yeah, So like I don't know if you're like, how
- 19:50Speaker 5: do you.
- 19:53Speaker 3: Like? That?
- 19:53Speaker 5: Just seems hard for one dude to like make all
- 19:56Speaker 5: these cards keep them all balanced, Like how do you
- 19:59Speaker 5: how do you try to like find a way to
- 20:04Speaker 5: through that?
- 20:05Speaker 2: Do you are there other.
- 20:08Speaker 5: Folks in the office who you're constantly like, you know,
- 20:12Speaker 5: being like hey, look at this, or or are you
- 20:16Speaker 5: like really bothering the playtests bothering?
- 20:19Speaker 4: You know, they volunteers, but are you being.
- 20:21Speaker 5: The playtesters like every day like okay, look at this,
- 20:24Speaker 5: Like tell me about that process.
- 20:26Speaker 3: So, first of all, like, uh, Michael in the office
- 20:31Speaker 3: is always a huge resource to have. Just bouncing card
- 20:35Speaker 3: ideas off of him is a favorite pastime of mine.
- 20:43Speaker 3: I do talk to the ore two judges a lot
- 20:46Speaker 3: and like, hey, what do you think about this card?
- 20:48Speaker 3: And several times they have told me don't do that,
- 20:52Speaker 3: and sometimes I listen to them on that.
- 20:55Speaker 4: But you know, are hold on now?
- 20:58Speaker 2: All right? All right? So what card did you card?
- 21:00Speaker 5: Did they say don't do that?
- 21:02Speaker 4: And you didn't listen to them, You're like, nope, doing it?
- 21:07Speaker 3: The one well, one card that comes to mind is
- 21:09Speaker 3: the animator.
- 21:11Speaker 5: Okay, because rules wise, they're like the rules don't Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.
- 21:18Speaker 4: That is a very interesting card.
- 21:19Speaker 5: But yeah, like.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Right, there's a lot.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Of quick exertions, there's some weird rules interactions with it,
- 21:27Speaker 3: and I totally understand where that and it evolved a
- 21:31Speaker 3: whole bunch from where it originally was presented to them
- 21:37Speaker 3: to where it is.
- 21:37Speaker 4: Now and well, and that that's similar to old school
- 21:41Speaker 4: jar Google, which just it presents such a rules nightmare.
- 21:46Speaker 4: So some of those cards have amazing interaction and as
- 21:49Speaker 4: gamers we love to be able to break kind of
- 21:51Speaker 4: what the game is set up to do. But yes,
- 21:53Speaker 4: I can imagine for the judges going please please, please
- 21:56Speaker 4: please please tell us.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Right there, they're really happy with the play capture one
- 22:01Speaker 3: kind of cards like you got that.
- 22:05Speaker 4: We will keep encouraging you don't don't go there. We
- 22:08Speaker 4: do need to have complexity to the game. It needs
- 22:11Speaker 4: to be balanced.
- 22:12Speaker 5: But yeah, yeah, you don't need to reprint Rating Night again.
- 22:15Speaker 5: We're okay, we got enough times.
- 22:19Speaker 2: More Rating Night please.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Well ready, Night's House no longer exists.
- 22:25Speaker 4: That's true, that's true. He doesn't be a question. But
- 22:30Speaker 4: we talked about it going into.
- 22:31Speaker 5: That it's time for a reprint. But how many fake
- 22:38Speaker 5: email addresses? Did you have to create Luke to submit
- 22:41Speaker 5: please like perge sanctum in order for it to like
- 22:44Speaker 5: bump to the top.
- 22:52Speaker 3: How many fake emails did I have to send?
- 22:54Speaker 4: I don't he seems like he would do it.
- 23:01Speaker 3: It was a I don't believe it was an email
- 23:03Speaker 3: system sir, No, I remember done?
- 23:07Speaker 4: All right, this is a bad.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Joke.
- 23:10Speaker 5: How close was it?
- 23:11Speaker 2: Actually?
- 23:12Speaker 5: Was it like ultra clon?
- 23:14Speaker 3: What the actual numbers were? Like? I stayed on that?
- 23:19Speaker 4: But can you you don't know who charge of this?
- 23:25Speaker 2: Is it?
- 23:26Speaker 4: Josh?
- 23:27Speaker 3: It's an event.
- 23:28Speaker 4: Ghost ghost Galaxy. I will go ahead and say that
- 23:36Speaker 4: Pop was done a great job with our mars event.
- 23:38Speaker 4: We just like it should be. Honestly, we can go
- 23:42Speaker 4: ahead and have a Google form that's out for the
- 23:44Speaker 4: event runners that you could have gone ahead an input
- 23:47Speaker 4: and that's showing a piagraph or a bar graph to
- 23:51Speaker 4: show which houses in the lead. I think it would
- 23:53Speaker 4: have brought people back to the key Forging dot com
- 23:56Speaker 4: website and have reason to be able to go ahead
- 23:59Speaker 4: and visit the site more frequently. You also can kind
- 24:01Speaker 4: of cheer on your house or kind of not and
- 24:04Speaker 4: then have a cut off date like again that interactivity
- 24:07Speaker 4: in our fast paced world is something that can be
- 24:11Speaker 4: a highlight of again a local event that's bringing people out.
- 24:15Speaker 4: So I know that's not you, but that's more just
- 24:18Speaker 4: a plea for the future.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Then it just begs the question, how did he not
- 24:22Speaker 2: and how did he know not to make that set
- 24:25Speaker 2: make that house on the next set? Hmmm mmmm? That
- 24:31Speaker 2: was probably just luck, that dumb luck.
- 24:34Speaker 5: But who knows what I'm gonna I'm going to start
- 24:38Speaker 5: a rumor that like it was actually like CTP and
- 24:42Speaker 5: his like you know evil throne room who's like patting
- 24:46Speaker 5: his you know, hairless cat who's just like you know,
- 24:49Speaker 5: counting the ballots and then uh, you.
- 24:54Speaker 4: Know, changing them.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I don't know, he's counting. Find it was close. So
- 24:59Speaker 2: he's like slots those two and.
- 25:03Speaker 4: I am picturing I'm picturing the little the little pinky
- 25:06Speaker 4: finger up and this is an Austin Powers moment.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Right, But then is there just a mini running around
- 25:15Speaker 2: all right?
- 25:15Speaker 4: Well, we are off tasks. We are off task. Is
- 25:18Speaker 4: only a C can do? So I will throw in
- 25:21Speaker 4: another great question and this is just mine, so you
- 25:23Speaker 4: can blame the What the heck is happening?
- 25:26Speaker 3: Right?
- 25:27Speaker 4: What the heck happens happening with redemption.
- 25:30Speaker 3: It is a it's a it's a house with a
- 25:32Speaker 3: lot of lore behind it and a lot of chaos
- 25:38Speaker 3: in its creation, and and it's a maintenance level.
- 25:45Speaker 5: So they hate themselves.
- 25:49Speaker 4: I have.
- 25:51Speaker 2: I have a theory, Can I can?
- 25:53Speaker 3: I can?
- 25:53Speaker 2: I put my theory out there and you give me
- 25:55Speaker 2: just a quick yes or no.
- 25:59Speaker 5: It's definitely gonna be no, but sure perhaps Okay.
- 26:02Speaker 2: So my theory was they knew they maybe knew about
- 26:04Speaker 2: this event that was going to dump two houses, right,
- 26:09Speaker 2: and they needed somewhere for those two houses cards to go,
- 26:13Speaker 2: so they made redemption. So now you're just gonna see
- 26:17Speaker 2: all logos and sanctum in redemption as opposed to them
- 26:22Speaker 2: actually being in their proper houses. So the Redemption powerhouse
- 26:26Speaker 2: in twenty twenty six, it's my call. That's my called
- 26:29Speaker 2: shot for next year.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Okay, Well, we'll see how that turns out for you.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I'm gonna guess it turns up.
- 26:37Speaker 5: Well, if a card starts with for each mutant creature,
- 26:41Speaker 5: that it's definitely not gonna be Yeah.
- 26:42Speaker 4: So well, again, I think that you leaning into the
- 26:49Speaker 4: mutant creatures, like having dav there going ahead and doing vaults, blessing.
- 26:53Speaker 4: Having impact cards with a high amount of mutants is
- 26:57Speaker 4: that can go ahead and pull it off. But outside
- 26:59Speaker 4: of that, just playing creatures as a whole does not
- 27:04Speaker 4: go ahead and stand up from the competitive side with
- 27:07Speaker 4: what we are having. Even if you look at cards
- 27:11Speaker 4: like Edge Magus where you're going ahead and gaining an
- 27:13Speaker 4: Amber and you can double up and have two of them,
- 27:15Speaker 4: you're getting two Amber, it can be amber generation. But
- 27:17Speaker 4: if you don't have those key cards, just having creatures
- 27:20Speaker 4: as a whole really is a limiting factor. And so
- 27:23Speaker 4: I just know from the community as a whole that
- 27:25Speaker 4: Redemption like I actually one of my favorite PV decks
- 27:29Speaker 4: is it has house redemption, but they are so rare
- 27:33Speaker 4: and so far in between, and even that just it
- 27:35Speaker 4: doesn't hold light. So that's unfortunate because I think that
- 27:40Speaker 4: key Forge does lean into the lore. KeyForge does have
- 27:43Speaker 4: some house identity. There's been some blurring, I guess more recently,
- 27:51Speaker 4: but we've also dug into many many sets across the
- 27:54Speaker 4: last few years, and so that puts extra strain and
- 27:59Speaker 4: pressure on you.
- 28:01Speaker 3: Definitely, an interesting design for Redemption was like to be
- 28:10Speaker 3: focused on the mutant creatures, and before this mass mutations
- 28:14Speaker 3: like that was the last one that kind of focused
- 28:16Speaker 3: on mutants, and they had the benefit of like spreading
- 28:21Speaker 3: mutants across all seven houses and having the mutant trait
- 28:26Speaker 3: be a thing in there. It's a lot different when
- 28:29Speaker 3: you only have one house that you're kind of working
- 28:31Speaker 3: with to do that, but we tried to do We
- 28:37Speaker 3: try to play around with giving other cards on the
- 28:41Speaker 3: board the mutant trait, even though they didn't have that
- 28:43Speaker 3: printed on them. Was one of the ideas that we
- 28:47Speaker 3: had to try to bolster that and two very degrees
- 28:53Speaker 3: of success.
- 28:53Speaker 5: I would say, well, and you know you could do
- 28:58Speaker 5: now is you could they hate themselves so much that
- 29:02Speaker 5: they are going to go and find the uh the
- 29:06Speaker 5: plagued logos that are now mutants for some reason, and uh,
- 29:11Speaker 5: you know you're gonna get a mutant daughter and a
- 29:14Speaker 5: mutant you know whatever.
- 29:15Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 29:20Speaker 5: We figured it out, but I guess that's all that
- 29:26Speaker 5: could be interesting.
- 29:27Speaker 3: It could be. Yeah.
- 29:30Speaker 4: So from a from a game design standpoint, we had
- 29:36Speaker 4: primarily seen a primary focus and secondary focus for each house.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Identity Is that still a key components that you look
- 29:42Speaker 4: at when creating a new house or going ahead and
- 29:46Speaker 4: going forward with houses that are repeating, so we do
- 29:52Speaker 4: try to.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Keep like each house kind of unique, with each each
- 29:57Speaker 3: of them having like you said, a primary and a
- 29:59Speaker 3: kind of a secondary, very characteristic about them and what
- 30:02Speaker 3: they were, what they're trying to do. We try to
- 30:06Speaker 3: keep that as unique as possible between all the houses.
- 30:13Speaker 3: But with us getting up to like twelve houses now,
- 30:19Speaker 3: whatever the how many houses we have right now, there's
- 30:21Speaker 3: gonna be some overlap in it. We do try to
- 30:25Speaker 3: limit that as much as possible, and we try to
- 30:30Speaker 3: come up with new ideas with what the houses are
- 30:34Speaker 3: supposed to be actually doing. So the goal is to
- 30:39Speaker 3: make each house feel unique and not like just a
- 30:43Speaker 3: repeat of some other house or just say it's this house,
- 30:47Speaker 3: but it does it better right right?
- 30:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I got fifth. I have fifteen houses if I
- 30:53Speaker 4: counted correctly. From what's there, Yeah, and I think, I
- 30:57Speaker 4: mean that's been a little bit of the complaint for
- 30:59Speaker 4: when you see Skyborne and Shadows all of a sudden,
- 31:01Speaker 4: it took the steal from Shadows because I don't know
- 31:05Speaker 4: about you, but for a game, I was anticipating seeing
- 31:08Speaker 4: some more repetition of houses and kind of flushing out
- 31:12Speaker 4: the mechanics for them versus kind of going wide with
- 31:16Speaker 4: all the houses. So it was a really interesting choice
- 31:18Speaker 4: to kind of dig into as many houses as we
- 31:20Speaker 4: have in a relatively quick period of time.
- 31:27Speaker 5: I mean, new houses are fun and interesting, right, Like
- 31:30Speaker 5: get to see new cards, new stuff, right, I mean,
- 31:35Speaker 5: But then yeah, somehow, somehow the balance has to to
- 31:40Speaker 5: catch up.
- 31:40Speaker 4: Or keep up or whatever.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it's always it's always a narrow road we walk, right, Like.
- 31:47Speaker 5: We've seen we've seen a few things, right, and some
- 31:51Speaker 5: of those things, Luke, I think you're very involved with
- 31:53Speaker 5: some of some of which like pre date you, right,
- 31:55Speaker 5: But we've seen like mechanisms that are just like quite
- 32:02Speaker 5: strong that you could you could you could see a
- 32:08Speaker 5: different world in which it would be a mechanism that
- 32:13Speaker 5: wasn't strong, right, So like so for example, right, like
- 32:16Speaker 5: like the haunted thing, right, Like, that's a conditional where
- 32:19Speaker 5: it's like you need to be haunted.
- 32:20Speaker 2: To have this effect happen.
- 32:24Speaker 5: But then Skyborne Wright's got the will you move things
- 32:26Speaker 5: around or so you want them to be on the
- 32:28Speaker 5: flank or not on the flank. But then but for
- 32:31Speaker 5: the most part, that's considered not strong. But it's in
- 32:38Speaker 5: many ways because of the u strengthy effects or like
- 32:43Speaker 5: the ease of which you could do the certain things.
- 32:46Speaker 5: So so I don't know like when you approach that
- 32:50Speaker 5: like both those things, Yeah, like how do you think
- 32:54Speaker 5: do you think about like, hey, I want one of
- 32:55Speaker 5: these things to be a strong thing and one of
- 32:58Speaker 5: these things to be a sir element or are you
- 33:02Speaker 5: attempting at least I know it's like, are you attempting
- 33:06Speaker 5: to make them both similar?
- 33:07Speaker 3: Like tell me we would like the mechanics to be
- 33:10Speaker 3: impactful like the that we put in there, and again
- 33:16Speaker 3: varying degrees of success for all this stuff to where
- 33:23Speaker 3: we want we want to introduce some sort of challenge
- 33:30Speaker 3: for the players, just like Okay, I have this effect,
- 33:35Speaker 3: but if I have this conditional on it, like I
- 33:38Speaker 3: need to do something to make this as good as possible.
- 33:44Speaker 3: And then the counterpoint to all of that is to
- 33:47Speaker 3: like try to balance the cards effect where it's like,
- 33:52Speaker 3: if this is a really easy thing to accomplish, you
- 33:54Speaker 3: shouldn't get like this huge swing in a card power
- 33:57Speaker 3: from doing that. Where if it's a harder thing to
- 33:59Speaker 3: pull off, then maybe you get a bigger effect and stuff.
- 34:03Speaker 3: But like finding that balance has always been like a
- 34:07Speaker 3: big challenge for the game.
- 34:12Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a challenge, and then it's probably also different
- 34:14Speaker 5: for like sealed verse, Yeah right, because like sealed on average,
- 34:22Speaker 5: boards matter way more, whereas arcan you know, super easy
- 34:26Speaker 5: to bring something with lots of c Therefore boards matter
- 34:30Speaker 5: or less.
- 34:34Speaker 4: So do you do you start with one or the other?
- 34:36Speaker 4: You just start concept and then try to stick it
- 34:39Speaker 4: in the middle.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Concept and stick it in the middle, I guess is
- 34:43Speaker 3: where I would land with that, because we don't want, uh,
- 34:48Speaker 3: one format to just be the more obvious favorite favorite,
- 34:53Speaker 3: like we want both to have a good experience.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Right, all right? Are we ready to get into a
- 35:04Speaker 2: few one lightning questions? Some easy ones? All right? So
- 35:11Speaker 2: you got your list out right?
- 35:14Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 35:15Speaker 2: All right? So what's the designed from your past that
- 35:18Speaker 2: you most regret that I most regret?
- 35:23Speaker 3: Hm hmmm, Uh, well, there's there's a couple of cards
- 35:33Speaker 3: that I definitely wanted to make like a big, splashy,
- 35:39Speaker 3: impactful card and uh put it out there. And there
- 35:46Speaker 3: have been a couple that have gone like way too
- 35:48Speaker 3: far in being a lot more powerful than I expected
- 35:53Speaker 3: in that uh didn't kind of go the way and
- 35:58Speaker 3: that there's been a couple that have also like just
- 36:00Speaker 3: totally flopped and like no one has even like talked
- 36:03Speaker 3: about it after opening.
- 36:05Speaker 4: A deck to like, okay, what's one of those cards
- 36:10Speaker 4: that has flopped that you're like really hoping for?
- 36:12Speaker 3: Flopped card? Uh, Norplett is one that I keep coming
- 36:21Speaker 3: back to. It's like, I know people like it. That's
- 36:23Speaker 3: a good card. Yeah, I know, it's like it's it's
- 36:25Speaker 3: just never been like a like check the check out
- 36:29Speaker 3: this cool narplet deck that I've had. Never no one's
- 36:31Speaker 3: ever said.
- 36:32Speaker 4: That to me, So.
- 36:37Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 36:38Speaker 4: Yeah, so, I mean the rarity has an impact the
- 36:41Speaker 4: house that it's in and the set, all of those
- 36:43Speaker 4: are very on the gameplay. But yes, Narplett is a
- 36:48Speaker 4: solid a very solid card, just isn't game breaking or
- 36:52Speaker 4: and it's.
- 36:55Speaker 2: That that hurts it a lot.
- 36:58Speaker 4: I have broadbars are right and not guys.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Now they just want to beat things before, which I
- 37:10Speaker 2: get that's their thing. That's not jam right, And it's
- 37:15Speaker 2: always it's always wanted to listen to sheep from across
- 37:20Speaker 2: the room. Yell Brobner. It's always worth that every single time.
- 37:29Speaker 2: All right, I think we all know the one.
- 37:32Speaker 4: That went too far.
- 37:32Speaker 5: I'm curious, like what would you what did you call
- 37:34Speaker 5: out there?
- 37:35Speaker 2: Long?
- 37:36Speaker 3: Ah No, I can't think of a specific one that
- 37:40Speaker 3: comes to mind right now. Really, I definitely want.
- 37:42Speaker 5: To really come on, come on, let me let me.
- 37:48Speaker 4: You can't question too far.
- 37:52Speaker 5: Related but different questions like how many?
- 37:55Speaker 2: Oh, go ahead?
- 37:55Speaker 5: Yeah you answered that honestly, follow up?
- 37:57Speaker 2: Go ahead?
- 37:58Speaker 3: I guess the Amber Drakes was the one.
- 38:00Speaker 4: What that was like, you're pretty good.
- 38:03Speaker 3: I'm like, okay, I want these guys to be big
- 38:04Speaker 3: and splashy and like stupid and you look at this like, wow,
- 38:08Speaker 3: this is awesome. And yeah, they were little. They're good,
- 38:14Speaker 3: they're good cards. I didn't expect them to be.
- 38:16Speaker 2: You didn't expect Otk's and alliance.
- 38:20Speaker 3: Well that that's a different story.
- 38:23Speaker 4: But do you even think about alliance when you're designing?
- 38:26Speaker 3: I try not to. I try not.
- 38:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't try to think about it either. Yeah,
- 38:32Speaker 5: we're all in agreement there, All right, good answer, All right,
- 38:38Speaker 5: all right? So related question, how many people inside and
- 38:44Speaker 5: through the playtesters saw the current text of Trenk's creed
- 38:50Speaker 5: before it was published. How many people would you like
- 38:53Speaker 5: to throw under the bus.
- 38:54Speaker 3: Go ahead, I'm not going to throw anybody under the bus.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Day you don't have to say, who just gonna be
- 39:00Speaker 2: at least throw a mammon under the bus for no reason.
- 39:02Speaker 4: Yeah, throw that guy under the bush.
- 39:06Speaker 3: I appreciate every one of my playtesters and all the
- 39:10Speaker 3: time they give us to making this game as good
- 39:14Speaker 3: as it could possibly be.
- 39:16Speaker 6: All right, Next question, follow up question to that following up,
- 39:22Speaker 6: how often do you take the advice of playtesters into
- 39:27Speaker 6: consideration for modifying those cards that they're all.
- 39:31Speaker 3: The time, like like anytime, like I get feedback from
- 39:35Speaker 3: the playtesters or from like anybody. It does. The fact
- 39:39Speaker 3: that it does, it is all considered, and it is debated,
- 39:43Speaker 3: and it's and it definitely h impacts the development of
- 39:51Speaker 3: a set and before or after or during playtesting.
- 39:56Speaker 2: All right, Another dumb question, do you well there are
- 40:02Speaker 2: you're on this podcast ahead to the show? Ever do
- 40:09Speaker 2: you you know so like obviously you're we're doing the
- 40:13Speaker 2: art cards, right, yes, do you know who you're designing
- 40:17Speaker 2: for or does it like get designed and then it
- 40:19Speaker 2: gets slapped with an art.
- 40:23Speaker 3: So for the art cards, it kind of depends, uh
- 40:28Speaker 3: so right now, so for like prophetic visions, like even
- 40:36Speaker 3: like for your specific card, like the the card that
- 40:39Speaker 3: you guys have your customized art for for that card.
- 40:44Speaker 5: That card that yeah, that card.
- 40:50Speaker 3: Was like redesigned for to like work with the art
- 40:58Speaker 3: for that thing. Like the original one was sort of
- 41:03Speaker 3: like that. But I'm like, okay, I got we gotta
- 41:06Speaker 3: change itself a little bit here, because it gotta have
- 41:11Speaker 3: a fun story with the actual card to go with
- 41:14Speaker 3: the art that. Sometimes that happens, sometimes it doesn't. It's
- 41:21Speaker 3: just really a matter of like what is needed in
- 41:24Speaker 3: the house, and like if they're requesting houses, like we're
- 41:27Speaker 3: kind of limited to like, Okay, here's what this card
- 41:30Speaker 3: can do, and here's here's what we have room for
- 41:34Speaker 3: in the actual development for the house.
- 41:37Speaker 2: And that gives cards their flavor text And how do
- 41:44Speaker 2: I get that job?
- 41:46Speaker 3: How do you get that job?
- 41:49Speaker 5: Uh?
- 41:49Speaker 3: We we take flavor texts suggestions from anybody in the development,
- 41:57Speaker 3: So anybody walking around the office and or who says
- 42:01Speaker 3: something cool that I happened to overhear, or.
- 42:05Speaker 2: I don't remember. I remember our flavor text was pretty good.
- 42:07Speaker 2: I just don't remember what it isn't.
- 42:08Speaker 3: Now, Oh I know what it is.
- 42:11Speaker 2: I'm sure you do. What's our favorite text? Nobody remember
- 42:17Speaker 2: he walked dress car.
- 42:18Speaker 4: I'm searching I'm trying to get there somewhere in our
- 42:22Speaker 4: notes I have this. There are two and seventy one pages. Yes,
- 42:29Speaker 4: it is going back a bit.
- 42:31Speaker 2: I shouldn't go back that far well either, wa, yeah,
- 42:34Speaker 2: I don't have it.
- 42:35Speaker 3: No one take a picture of it.
- 42:38Speaker 4: Definitely, definitely it is someone derobably did.
- 42:41Speaker 2: It wasn't me. E Walk definitely did.
- 42:46Speaker 5: But I have a picture of the cake.
- 42:48Speaker 4: But the cake doesn't have the flavor text on it.
- 42:50Speaker 2: No, the cake just has the picture. Right, That's right, right,
- 42:54Speaker 2: all right? So moving forward, we'll let you Walk find
- 42:57Speaker 2: it in the notes?
- 42:59Speaker 4: What what house was it?
- 43:01Speaker 2: And I'm trying to recall that shadows shadows of course
- 43:04Speaker 2: for a shadows card, I know, but I get a oh,
- 43:10Speaker 2: you know what some of this, some of these questions
- 43:12Speaker 2: we've already gone through, so I gotta kind of mark
- 43:15Speaker 2: them off as we go because they just were naturally
- 43:19Speaker 2: talked about. Okay, what is one Carter mechanic that barely
- 43:24Speaker 2: didn't make it into the set, but you think the
- 43:27Speaker 2: community would have absolutely loved.
- 43:32Speaker 3: So what card like didn't make it in?
- 43:34Speaker 2: Either a card or a mechanic that didn't make it.
- 43:37Speaker 3: That didn't make it in Oh my gosh, let me
- 43:41Speaker 3: go to the list of lost cards.
- 43:43Speaker 2: Oh boy, there's a list.
- 43:45Speaker 3: Oh you know, there's a list for everything that's true.
- 43:48Speaker 4: I put but picture if if a card doesn't make
- 43:52Speaker 4: it into a set, it's still an idea and you
- 43:55Speaker 4: can't lose. You can't lose that idea, especially.
- 43:59Speaker 3: That there's thoughts put into these things I have. Okay,
- 44:05Speaker 3: we'll just go through a few things here. I have
- 44:10Speaker 3: a card that is called duck Wich that I really
- 44:12Speaker 3: want to make gotten there yet duck Wich.
- 44:16Speaker 4: The sloppy boys would be so happy with you. I
- 44:18Speaker 4: know that.
- 44:23Speaker 3: I have a I have a card name. I have
- 44:25Speaker 3: no idea what the card is going to do, but
- 44:26Speaker 3: it's just called on the palette.
- 44:30Speaker 5: On the palette.
- 44:30Speaker 4: Okay, okay?
- 44:33Speaker 5: Is this a reference to to Philly?
- 44:36Speaker 3: Although it could be. Uh, there's I.
- 44:42Speaker 5: Mean, when when are we going to get a four
- 44:43Speaker 5: to six weeks card?
- 44:47Speaker 3: I'm not familiar with that.
- 44:48Speaker 5: You're not familiar.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Can we get an equadam that says fifty percent of
- 44:52Speaker 2: marketing doesn't work?
- 44:55Speaker 3: Oh?
- 44:55Speaker 5: That would be a great equitad card.
- 45:02Speaker 2: It's just one of those getty rooking guys, or like
- 45:03Speaker 2: a shoulder strug and his hands up like the air.
- 45:08Speaker 2: It's like I don't know.
- 45:10Speaker 3: Oh, well, I've got an untamed card called Sir Perloin,
- 45:16Speaker 3: but I have not gotten to yet.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Oh it's a cat if you didn't know.
- 45:23Speaker 4: I think you have to work in wordly ball somehow.
- 45:26Speaker 4: You should make a worlely ball house.
- 45:28Speaker 5: That's what you're stretching with that one. Maybe it's a
- 45:36Speaker 5: house that fantasy related.
- 45:39Speaker 3: All right, So here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna
- 45:41Speaker 3: make a that sounds like an unfathomable card, right boys.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Worldly ball, Yeah, I guess what going to be.
- 45:48Speaker 5: I think you should have a whole house right, like definitely,
- 45:50Speaker 5: no kind of like.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Worly ball seems definitely like an unfathomable type deal, right,
- 45:57Speaker 2: and they could be playing some sort of ball underneath
- 46:00Speaker 2: the seat sheep sheep is grumbling.
- 46:02Speaker 3: Over in the bar. Really poor, really worly brawl there
- 46:07Speaker 3: it is brawn.
- 46:08Speaker 5: Oh that's a broad dart card. Yeah all right, and
- 46:13Speaker 5: they're just like giants thrown around a goblin.
- 46:16Speaker 4: Did you hear about all the key Forge after Dark
- 46:20Speaker 4: series that apparently was created too.
- 46:23Speaker 2: We did that two years ago and I never did
- 46:25Speaker 2: anything with it. One day, one day that'll become a
- 46:28Speaker 2: thing sure after dark. All right, did you ever design
- 46:33Speaker 2: a card specifically because you wanted players to suffer?
- 46:38Speaker 3: No, my goal is not.
- 46:43Speaker 4: What about we want Wookie to suffer? Well, you should
- 46:46Speaker 4: make a card.
- 46:46Speaker 3: Yeah, no, Wooki's great, man.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Yeah did you? I told you? Guys, that's it. Where's
- 46:54Speaker 2: the stop recording button? We're gonna end up there already
- 47:02Speaker 2: know you should do Wookie.
- 47:03Speaker 5: Actually, this is this is how you get your ideas
- 47:06Speaker 5: in Wookie.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 47:07Speaker 5: You know, if if Luke's just walking around the office's ideas,
- 47:11Speaker 5: get a bunch of sticky notes.
- 47:13Speaker 2: The next time, put them all over the game center.
- 47:17Speaker 5: Yeah, Minnesota, Just like stick those sticky notes in weird
- 47:21Speaker 5: random places around around the building so that Luke slowly
- 47:24Speaker 5: finds them over the course of the next year, and
- 47:26Speaker 5: he's like, I wonder I who left this idea?
- 47:29Speaker 2: Are we have a better idea? I'm gonna get one
- 47:32Speaker 2: of those glasses with the fake nose and mustache, and
- 47:34Speaker 2: I'll wear like one of those brimmed hats, and I'll
- 47:36Speaker 2: just start saying.
- 47:37Speaker 4: Things because no one will ever Rookie.
- 47:42Speaker 2: The glasses and mustache.
- 47:43Speaker 4: Just four.
- 47:47Speaker 5: Now, that is what you need. You need a you
- 47:49Speaker 5: need an upgrade. That's the perfect disguise, and it's just
- 47:53Speaker 5: like yeah, it's just like a nose and glasses like
- 47:57Speaker 5: that bushy mustache.
- 47:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, why are we horrible? This is great?
- 48:04Speaker 5: Uh huh Yeah, it's an upgrade, so it's gonna be awful.
- 48:08Speaker 2: Yeah, alrighty have you ever purposely made a card terrible
- 48:15Speaker 2: just to balance out how buffs busted? The previous one was,
- 48:21Speaker 2: uh no.
- 48:22Speaker 3: I tried not to make terrible cards. That that's not
- 48:25Speaker 3: the So what do you mean by the terrible cards?
- 48:30Speaker 2: But what about sorry, like you made something busted and
- 48:35Speaker 2: then you're like, oh, we got to throw in just
- 48:37Speaker 2: like an absolute trash bandit card. Oh no, this one's
- 48:44Speaker 2: too broken.
- 48:48Speaker 3: No, I'll just fix the actual card.
- 48:51Speaker 2: That's fine.
- 48:54Speaker 4: Is there is there? Ever? Is there ever a conversation
- 48:57Speaker 4: in gig in regards to going ahead and eratiting card
- 49:02Speaker 4: that is to you asked.
- 49:03Speaker 2: This question at KFC and the answer was they'll look
- 49:06Speaker 2: into it in four to six weeks.
- 49:11Speaker 4: Lukey always so different. There For a second, it sounded
- 49:14Speaker 4: like wookies.
- 49:15Speaker 2: It was because you asked this question at KFC and
- 49:18Speaker 2: Luke answered.
- 49:19Speaker 3: It, Yeah, I read it is something we we do
- 49:23Speaker 3: talk about a lot in the office, and it is
- 49:25Speaker 3: something that we are not we that is, it's a
- 49:31Speaker 3: it is a tool that we are willing to use.
- 49:38Speaker 5: All right, So he asked about terrible cards. But but
- 49:40Speaker 5: I want to ask not about terrible cards per se,
- 49:43Speaker 5: but but bad cards. You know, like there's like bad
- 49:49Speaker 5: Penny right or or right, like cards that are kind
- 49:52Speaker 5: of like on purpose of lower power than other cards.
- 49:57Speaker 3: Do you do you.
- 49:58Speaker 5: Subscribe to that, like you should have something bad cards
- 50:04Speaker 5: they have thinking.
- 50:05Speaker 3: I don't think they like saw Bad Penny as a
- 50:08Speaker 3: bad card when they were developing it and designing it.
- 50:10Speaker 3: I think they they looked at Bad Penny and they
- 50:16Speaker 3: looked at it as a combo enabler, specifically for like
- 50:19Speaker 3: cards like secret Needle or for whistling guards or sure.
- 50:27Speaker 3: I like and I think that like that was kind
- 50:29Speaker 3: of what they were going. They weren't like trying to
- 50:31Speaker 3: make her just a bad card, Like you need to
- 50:33Speaker 3: deal with this in your deck, so dexter just capture man.
- 50:43Speaker 3: Oh but yeah, there's definitely like as you're designing and
- 50:49Speaker 3: you're doing stuff and like, oh, I'm I think like
- 50:52Speaker 3: this card will be used in this way and then
- 50:54Speaker 3: it just isn't and it does not work that way
- 50:59Speaker 3: at all, all right, I think I think that happens
- 51:03Speaker 3: a lot.
- 51:06Speaker 2: So two partner on this one. How often do you
- 51:11Speaker 2: finish a sentence and think, oh, no, the community is
- 51:14Speaker 2: going to roast us for this one?
- 51:17Speaker 3: Every time?
- 51:18Speaker 4: Every every time?
- 51:19Speaker 2: All right?
- 51:20Speaker 3: Every time? It's like locking locking a set is one
- 51:26Speaker 3: of the most stressful, like nerve wracking points of my life.
- 51:32Speaker 3: It's like, okay, this is it, like mm hmmmm, and
- 51:38Speaker 3: have I done?
- 51:39Speaker 2: And then how often do you go fucking acy? Guys?
- 51:47Speaker 2: I don't say it that way, well, I know what
- 51:49Speaker 2: you know, however you say.
- 51:50Speaker 4: It, you know, like you know, hey, your donation there.
- 51:56Speaker 3: I I appreciate you guys a lot, Like I know
- 51:59Speaker 3: you guys, uh give us a lot of grief, and
- 52:05Speaker 3: but you also give us a lot of Like it's
- 52:07Speaker 3: good to see your guys' passion and I really appreciate that.
- 52:11Speaker 3: In this It's like it's like if you guys didn't
- 52:12Speaker 3: care about this game, like you want to be here
- 52:15Speaker 3: doing all of this stuff, and you want to be
- 52:17Speaker 3: going to like all the events, and like every event
- 52:20Speaker 3: that I go to that I see you guys at
- 52:21Speaker 3: I really get excited to see you and talk to you,
- 52:26Speaker 3: And when I go to avention and you're not there,
- 52:28Speaker 3: I get a little sad. It's not quite as awesome
- 52:31Speaker 3: as I thought it was going to be, man.
- 52:35Speaker 4: Or something.
- 52:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess we'll see. We'll see how long that lasts.
- 52:42Speaker 2: We are old men. We tend to forget. So you
- 52:45Speaker 2: know that's true. How often has our name brought up
- 52:48Speaker 2: on the on the teams meetings?
- 52:51Speaker 3: The teams meetings.
- 52:54Speaker 2: Or do you guys not do do you guys just
- 52:55Speaker 2: do regular old meetings? I guess you're all there. You
- 52:57Speaker 2: can just all see each other in the office.
- 53:00Speaker 4: Don't on skype.
- 53:00Speaker 3: It's whole meetings. I mean we talk about everybody really.
- 53:08Speaker 2: All right?
- 53:09Speaker 4: For all those following along, sheep, even at a distance,
- 53:12Speaker 4: is helping us out. So Lewis I can't even say
- 53:16Speaker 4: it now. Oh yeah, the checks but the acah, yeah, anyway,
- 53:26Speaker 4: the check is arriving any day now.
- 53:29Speaker 2: One day waiting. I checked the mail at the end
- 53:31Speaker 2: of the day, so I'll just keep waiting.
- 53:36Speaker 4: Oh man, the full art looks so awesome from that
- 53:40Speaker 4: screenshot there. Yeah, for for all, it's a good time.
- 53:44Speaker 2: I like it, Okay, all right, This is another fun one.
- 53:50Speaker 2: How many cards, not including Myers cards, have you made
- 53:54Speaker 2: specifically so players could mispronounce them?
- 53:58Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, so mar Mars cars are definitely high
- 54:04Speaker 3: on that list.
- 54:07Speaker 4: Mars and Aquadan.
- 54:11Speaker 3: And now a shadows card.
- 54:17Speaker 2: Compared, he's italent.
- 54:26Speaker 3: It's hold on. There's a whole story behind all of
- 54:29Speaker 3: these words that are used. Compare the person who introduces
- 54:35Speaker 3: performers or contestants in a variety show my colon post.
- 54:41Speaker 2: Ah, that makes sense for us. Okay, so there's even
- 54:44Speaker 2: a deep deep brown.
- 54:47Speaker 3: Oh yeah, there's And then Lewis was something as well.
- 54:55Speaker 2: Where was I know, different spreadsheet? Hold on? Well, to
- 55:02Speaker 2: open up a Google Google.
- 55:03Speaker 3: Doc any for spreadsheets, you had some I've somewhere and
- 55:14Speaker 3: it said something cool. So well to say that famous
- 55:18Speaker 3: warrior or glorious battle.
- 55:21Speaker 4: The or the origins of Lewis's fame and warrior.
- 55:25Speaker 3: There you go, that's what it was.
- 55:28Speaker 4: Famous in battle.
- 55:29Speaker 2: Must be talking about sheep on that one.
- 55:33Speaker 4: Famous in battle, famous.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Because he's the only one who wins anything.
- 55:39Speaker 4: Uh well, depends on what what what depends on what
- 55:43Speaker 4: you consider winning.
- 55:44Speaker 5: So you could be famous being number one with wins
- 55:47Speaker 5: it life, right, right, walk, and I are very good
- 55:51Speaker 5: at taking second place.
- 55:53Speaker 4: Hey, it's it's really really difficult to take second place.
- 55:59Speaker 2: M hmm, alright, that yeah, second place. It's a good time.
- 56:09Speaker 2: I'm gonna kind of round out everything with this one.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Actually we got two more I guess, well, now I
- 56:16Speaker 2: got a couple more cautions. All right, But what card
- 56:19Speaker 2: do you personally hate playing against.
- 56:23Speaker 3: In furnas. I still don't like that card, even though
- 56:28Speaker 3: you run it back, sir, I did bring it back.
- 56:30Speaker 3: I thought it was it would be fun in prophetic visions. Yeah,
- 56:36Speaker 3: that's it's fun and and it is it is. It
- 56:39Speaker 3: definitely does things does but like.
- 56:46Speaker 4: Wow, ye, well again it's it's not for necessarily the
- 56:50Speaker 4: Amber control. I think that's a secondary thought. It's the
- 56:52Speaker 4: ability to purge and eliminate those ten plus cards, the
- 56:57Speaker 4: cards that have such a pet.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Face that are about to tell me I'm not allowed
- 57:01Speaker 2: to play key Forge. What we mean are that's the
- 57:05Speaker 2: only card you're looking for. I'm looking forward.
- 57:09Speaker 4: You're just purging, You're just purging the fates. Interesting, maybe,
- 57:16Speaker 4: what do you mean? I just think that there's so
- 57:20Speaker 4: plenty of other cards.
- 57:21Speaker 2: Oh there's something, yes.
- 57:23Speaker 5: I mean it depends right, So speaking of fates prophecies, right,
- 57:28Speaker 5: and I think it right, It's one of those mechanisms
- 57:33Speaker 5: I think have some people that love it, some people
- 57:35Speaker 5: that don't love it, right, and that's normal right now.
- 57:37Speaker 5: But I guess the thing that surprised me, and I'm
- 57:41Speaker 5: curious on the design decision related to this. The thing
- 57:45Speaker 5: that surprised me was there isn't there's no cards that
- 57:51Speaker 5: affect the fate or prophecy, like defensively, right, not like
- 57:56Speaker 5: turn off fates or ignore prophecies for a turn or
- 57:59Speaker 5: anything like anything like that, right, Like what was that?
- 58:02Speaker 5: Did you consider? Did you like design cards that had
- 58:05Speaker 5: that and then take them out? Like I was just
- 58:07Speaker 5: surprised that there was nothing in the set that there's
- 58:11Speaker 5: not affected. Yeah, yeah, to tell me about.
- 58:15Speaker 3: So we tried to do a few of those things,
- 58:20Speaker 3: but it's it was always a there was always the
- 58:26Speaker 3: question about inter set play and were all of a
- 58:31Speaker 3: sudden like you're holding a card that doesn't do anything
- 58:35Speaker 3: against your opponent and it being just a dead card
- 58:38Speaker 3: in your deck.
- 58:40Speaker 4: But can't we go ahead and put those as dual
- 58:42Speaker 4: cards so that they gain an amber or they do
- 58:45Speaker 4: like a choice card, so you can go ahead and
- 58:49Speaker 4: have an impact and affect a fate or a prophecy
- 58:51Speaker 4: triggering or it can do this because those cards do
- 58:54Speaker 4: exist in argument.
- 58:58Speaker 3: They do choice cards. You then you run into another
- 59:01Speaker 3: problem of how good is this card? Like this guy,
- 59:07Speaker 3: how the potential for this card, like can go a
- 59:12Speaker 3: little bit crazy in choice cards? Yeah so, but yeah
- 59:19Speaker 3: so like We we went back and forth on it,
- 59:22Speaker 3: and in the end we decided that there weren't going
- 59:25Speaker 3: to be any direct like silver bullet cards to prophecies.
- 59:32Speaker 4: Now are you are you contemplating rethinking that?
- 59:36Speaker 3: Can you make a few I am actively talking to
- 59:40Speaker 3: judges about like different mechanics that can be introduced without
- 59:47Speaker 3: breaking the game and without writing a whole bunch more
- 59:52Speaker 3: rules to make it more complicated.
- 59:56Speaker 2: We'll go with that sweet interesting destroyed target fate ca
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: hard Mmm, I mean, but that doesn't I don't know,
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: how does that.
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: Especially especially knowing that I can play something at the
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: end of my turn that triggers at the beginning of
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: your turn, you never have a way to impact it,
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: and so the timing window both being before you you
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: like right away when you're starting your turn, the timing
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: window is a really interesting odd play space, and so
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: that's gonna be really tricky to be able to impact.
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: Yeah, did you consider at some point, like I always wondered,
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: because there there's those prophecy tokens that don't get a
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: ton of actual, like real world use, Like I had
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: always wondered if you had at some point designed it's
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: such that you like marked them that they want satisfied
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: and then like triggered them later, like at the beginning
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: of the prophecy Owner's turn or something like that like that.
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: Did I don't know my reading too much into those
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: tokens existing.
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: Reading a little too much into that.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: I always thought that only one was going to be
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: active at a time, and then I was wrong. That
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: that was my thoughts on them. As one would be
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: active and one would be just there. You could stash
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: a card under it until you took the game action
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: to activate it. It would be kind of just there.
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: And that's interesting for me. I almost picture I still
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: see both being active, but almost like it requires energy
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: or some substance to be able to fire, and so
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: that then times it out for a period of time
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: where it takes it offline. Because right now one of
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: the concerns is okay, I can stash cards the game
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: more efficiency. Sure, I don't think that's where the game
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: is necessarily twisted and having major issues, but it is
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: very interest seem to be able to see if a
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: prophecy goes ahead in just times out and you can't
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: use it or you can only use it every third turn,
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: how that even changes the mechanics for the game.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: Oh, it very much was.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: Tell you what, we'll tell you, we'll test it out
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: and we won't and we'll get back to you. So good,
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: All right, what else you got? Drans car?
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: All right?
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: So I got another question.
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: So so one of the things I think about sometimes
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: about really cool things about key Ford is because the
- 1:02:39Speaker 5: decks are algorithmally constructed, you can and then right, we
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: do right. Keyboard does have interesting rules about how they're constructed.
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: So there's like special cards that you know, we'll pull
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: on other cards and write that sort of thing, or
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: a card that has multiple versions, so on and so forth.
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: But there is a thing that was done in the
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: FFG era that I don't know if it has been done.
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: Like they're in.
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: I believe it was aoa.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: Uh and I.
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: From doing this off memory. So if this is correct,
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: Mugwump and what's the action card that's like, you know,
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: after fight again or.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: Something like that.
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that was a code of the card. What
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: was it?
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: Okay, Yeah, so there's like the cards. Yeah, I don't
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: remember what it was. But they can't appear together in
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: a death So like the theory of both these cards
- 1:03:43Speaker 5: are independently in theory fun and cool, and I do
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: like Mugwump, but because of the way they come together,
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: you just shouldn't let that happen. But like, this game
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: isn't just like Magic or another game where it's like, well,
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: I'll just put those together and I have a broken thing.
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: It's like you can have these two different interesting things,
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: but they are mutually exclusive.
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: Right into the fray, is what you're talking thinking.
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: That's it, Yes, into the frame. So I don't think
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: anything like that has occurred in in the GG era.
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: I mean maybe I'm wrong, you can tell me, But like,
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: I feel like there's an interesting design space there, Like
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: is that a thing you consider doing? Has it actually
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: happened that we just haven't noticed or I haven't noticed?
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: Is that hard to do?
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: Oh? No, it's it's like the tools we have make
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: restricting cards like that super simple to do. Now whether
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: or not it has happened, that's a good question, do uh,
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: And they're like, this is this like I was talking about,
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: like all the levers that we can pull on, Like
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: we have different limitters that we can put on cards,
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: like they cannot maverick, they cannot legacy if they are
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: prohibited from being with other cards. M that different ones
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: have valid other deck validation where they have to have
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: specific cards or types of cards in the deck to
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: be to appear in the deck and be a valid deck.
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: So there's a whole bunch of like stuff that we
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: can pull on like that, right. Well.
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: And it's interesting because even when you're talking about one
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: of your favorite cards fan Dangle, fandangle can actually be
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: mavericked and it can go ahead, it can be in
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: a different house, which makes it really good. Yes, So
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: like there's some cards that are odd. Even as you
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: guys are talking about mugwomp and into the fray, I'm
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: looking and going man with today's play, I would not
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: care about that anymore. I really wasn't at the time,
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: even though yeah, yeah, into the fray for the remainder
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: of the turn A friendly creature, A friendly broadmar creature
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: gains fight ready this creature and then mug Womp going
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: ahead and being six power after an enemy creatures destroyed
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: fighting mugwant fully healed Mugwamp give it a plus one
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: power counter. It's essentially it could be a board white,
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: but then you get a rep at the end and
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: that's it. And like things like gang or not actually
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: can go off for a lot more so it's just
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: it's interesting to see how something that was limited early
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: on we look and go, uh, that's not really an
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: issue anymore. That's kind of cool.
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: Well, because like there's cards like uh, the key Abduction
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: right where often it does not is a fine card
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: or even often actually he's not even that great a card, right,
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: You sort of have to have the right set up right,
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: which is fun, which is fun, But then you know,
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: many people argue that, hey, like winds of Death, key
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: abduction is just too strong, So like you don't have
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: to answer your specific pinion on that, but like in theory,
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: you could you could say, like, hey, actually, let's just
- 1:07:03Speaker 5: pretend for a second you thought that that was too strong.
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: You could say like, well, I like winds of Death,
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: which again questionable, but let's just say that. Uh, and
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: you like key abduction, so we'll just make sure they
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: never appear in a deck together. And yeah, and then
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: those Alliance folks can do whatever heck they want. But
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: you know, real key forge is safe, real key forge, Yeah, sealed.
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: Right, So.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: I guess I guess to answer that whole thing. It's like, yes,
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: that is something we can uh one of the levers
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: that we can pull on in the algorithm.
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: All right, you should do that. That'll be fun, that's
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: my opinion.
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: Make a card that needs to be not.
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: It sounds cool.
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: Yeah, well put this on my list, like make card
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: that broken.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: Make card broken that can't go with other cards, so
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: we can check a check by other card. Got it?
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: That's Keyboarge, Binger, keyboarde Bingo. I think that keyboards as
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: a whole has changed, and we talk about power creep.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: We talk about it's an increase in power level, which
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: is always something as a game designer we're trying to
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: kind of keep in check. But part of that has
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: been caused as reduct as a result of reduction of
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: cards and a set. So my question is what has
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: been the impact of designing of a set with a
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: reduced number of cards, so have you kind of kept
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: things in check? Has a reduction in cards and a
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: set impacted you as a game designer.
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: Gets to sleep, right now, that's what it is. That's
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: it's maybe not good.
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: It's both good and I want to ask.
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: It fixes some problems, not problems. It makes my life
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: easier in some ways, but makes my life a lot
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: harder in other ways because there's less cards in a set,
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: which means the one thing we just really cut back on,
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: where like cards that were super situational or and and
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: bad cards that are just like this card is just
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: in the deck to make you play around it, and
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: we really try to avoid that kind of design. So
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: that being gone, but then it creates a whole different
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: level of the With the smaller carpool, you're going to
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: get more repeated cards in a deck, which it can
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: be a good thing and a bad thing both like, hey,
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: you're gonna your game plan when you see this is
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: going to be this going forward, which might make it simpler,
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: but then you also have the problem of running into
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: abilities where it's fine if it's there's one of them
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: in the deck or two of them in the deck,
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: but if you those all of a sudden are getting
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: three in most decks, then it's like, okay, this is something.
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: Else entirely well, in the individual cards like common cards
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: actually hold a lot more value that if it's good,
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: it becomes really good because you're going to see it
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: more often. But if it's a poor common card with
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: the reduced number of cards, it really becomes a very
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: poor house or it has an impact negatively for the game.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it definitely does.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: We have a new nickname for that kind of card.
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: It's called burnish nickels.
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: Honestly, I think that in the and this is where
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: I think in a future set, burnished nickels can actually
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: have an impact.
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: The problem.
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: If if if Shadows, if Shadows had damage that it
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: was able to go ahead and kill the burnished Nickels
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: or cards that can apply direct damage to burnessed nickels.
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: It allows how is you to bounce creatures on your
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: opponent's side? However, because it is very limited with how
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: much damage pips there are and how much direct damage
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: to your own creatures can be done. Frankly, the amount
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: of damage that can be done in PV individual creature
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: control is limited. But because of that Burnish nickels really
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: absolutely drops in value and it has very very limited
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: use and so that's where the concern comes in. But honestly,
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: with damage pips, it increases what it can do. It's
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: just not like that.
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: That whole brings up a great point of like it's
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: really interesting to see like what a card can do
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: within a set, and it's like how the difference like
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: aprint can be in one set versus another set, and
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: some always uh that's one of the kind of the
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: things going into a new set and like looking at reprints,
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: like Okay, what how could I take this card that
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: was mediocre in this set and really make it sing
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: in this next set? And like what what can we
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: do to enable this card a little bit better without
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: breaking it? But yeah, so that's always a fun kind
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: of space to play in.
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: Life for a Life is getting reprinted.
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: I like Life for Life.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, remember it's originally okay, so what's that? Do
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: you remember when it first came out? Wait, you didn't
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: start to like whoa did you?
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: No?
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: I started, I started the beginning. I bought decks the.
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: Very first week he was launched. Okay, because there was
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: a big, big online about Life for a Life because
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: it doesn't say friendly just as sacrifice the creature. There
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: had to be clarification on it from from.
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: Sacrifice, right, yeah, yeah, I mean we can't even that
- 1:13:02Speaker 5: was way pre Luke, right, we can't wind them.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: Wait way pre Luke.
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: Oh yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, we can wind them on others.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Don't worry just saying that one. You know, it's coming back,
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: next set, next set, Life for a Life, Burndish Nickels
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: infinite loop.
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: Oh you know what you should whine about, Luke. Why
- 1:13:18Speaker 5: do you hate ships so much?
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: Why do I hate ships so much? Yeah, you get
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: against the ships.
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: Yeah, it's like give your opponent three or forever and
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: then you know, like that's it, Like that's what the.
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: Cards read, right, that's not what the cards read.
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: Sure it does. Let's see.
- 1:13:36Speaker 5: I'm gonna go so I'm on drascore dot com. Right,
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: I'm going to cards so drascore dot com, slash cards
- 1:13:42Speaker 5: dot html, and then I'm gonna filter by trash cards.
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: Okay, what about our zeros and ones? This is what
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: we're put this in the chat for you.
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: There you go to the card drazz score, yet best
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: scoring and most famous of the scoring systems. So dress
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: score dot com right.
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: And uh like Google is trying to make me corrected
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: to dr bass core.
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: So we have the live live show and under the
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: little chats than dress LinkedIn.
- 1:14:19Speaker 5: Oh there you go, all right, so go to cards
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: card yeah, and now go to filter by score right
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: and go to zero trash right. So like these are
- 1:14:30Speaker 5: cards that, in AC's expert opinion, never should have been printed.
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: And uh so the first one, the very first one
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: that is a zero is Ember Amber. How do you
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: say that Emberwind? So it says elusive versat all, play
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: exalt Emberwind three times?
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: Okay, stop there?
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: Why?
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: And that's that's forced on you? Why? Yeah?
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: Yeah, So it doesn't matter what else it says, because
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: your opponent just kills it and they get three Mber.
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: So it says, play give your opponent three.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: Well that.
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: So there you go. So after remove one to your pool,
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: so you need to reap like twice before it's a benefit.
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: Uh so that's never gonna happen. Uh. And then there's
- 1:15:21Speaker 5: the other ones, right, they all do similar things, right,
- 1:15:24Speaker 5: eruption right, versatile plagues all three times after five?
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: Really? Yeah, I really like I really like angry mob
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: here because I can get a whole bunch of my
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: angry mob. You can get a lot of mobs. Yeah,
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: angry mob's weird.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: But that's not Luke, right, that's pre there, right, So
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: it's not Luke that that wanted us to suffer. That
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: was somebody else.
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: You don't like swindle, Well, yes, the I guess because
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: you're only doing one thing, so it's rarely uh.
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: Yeah, you're doing exactly one thing, and gold likely if.
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: Dude, gold key Imp never should have been printed, never
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: should be reprinted. It is almost in a sealed game,
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: it's almost always for forced go to time. Right, Yeah,
- 1:16:22Speaker 5: so I might have so I left almost every score
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: that Z had originally created when he originally did the
- 1:16:30Speaker 5: Z score system. I might have changed goal keyemp to
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: a zero because I think this card is just an
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: atrocity and glad to see. Like I definitely played a
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: key Forge game against the new player and wild worm
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: hole into a gold key Imp when we're both on
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: two keys and realized that, oh this game, whoever kills
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: the gold key Imp loses this game and we're going
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: to go to time, and that's just not good. But AnyWho,
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: that's not you didn't create this card, but don't reprint.
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: In it anymore.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Wait, I'm pretty sure that's some prophetic visions. Yes, don't
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: do that, stop it bad.
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: Look do you have impact on our Vault Master series?
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: What cards are going into that's set as well? So,
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: I mean there's still options to be able to pull
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: from the previous database.
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: Man, why'd you show him this? That's what Vault Master's
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: twenty six is going to be is all these cards.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: It's just all the zeros, nothing but zero zero is good.
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: So so.
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: That would be really bad. Well, no, you could, right,
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: you could do like ancient fifty fifty one cards of zero. No, no, no,
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: draz no.
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: Ancient beta art. Just just remove the cannot reap huge
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: friendly creature gains after fight gain one like that's an
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: interesting carrd.
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: No, it's not.
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: Well you just make it. You've got to make a
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: new card. Then you can't just change. You're not going
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: to change. You're not going to go back and change
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: all battle ground nuveau nouveau like that.
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: No, don't don't listen to him.
- 1:18:15Speaker 5: Don't listen to me.
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: So, but.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: What's that?
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: Yes, you guys like kept complaining and complaining and complaining
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: until Finally.
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: Yeah, there's no amber pip on it, and you're discarding
- 1:18:32Speaker 4: your card from me, and so you don't want to
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: discard your card.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: Somebody complain to get it to a one, I thought
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: it was.
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: I mean, I was arguing and everybody was like, a chance,
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: it's a chance to be able to go ahead and
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: hit bonus icons. Again, you don't know what's there.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: It's not good.
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: It's not good at all.
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: All right, back back to focus. Thanks for showing on
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: this page. So now we can get all trash cards.
- 1:18:58Speaker 5: Yeah, well, no, go to go to has raptors chase
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: cards still not luke right, And then I guess we
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: have to do a new level like the Uber.
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: Card power right, yes, yes, but your auto.
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: Yeah we do have auto encoder, but not all the
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: sixes are create equal anymore. Right, but these are all
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: chase cards, right, so six snus.
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: Maybe because cosmic recompenses in here, right, do we need
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: to add you need to add a seven? So I
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: guess for me, the question is do you look when
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: you look at an overall set, do you look at
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: the different axis kind of for efficiency, for control, because
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: we're seeing befuddle or seeing atrocity, do you look at
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: each of those lines when going ahead and designing an
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: overall set.
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: Oh yeah, absolutely, Like everything is I have I have
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: spreadsheets of galore about a set, and there's different scores
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: for cards in there, and then I try to try
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: to use to get an idea of how a set
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: is going to go. Now does that encompass everything? Probably
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: not or definitely not, But we definitely have metrics that
- 1:20:25Speaker 3: we look at to try to help us along, and
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: then we throw it to the playtesters and have them beat.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: Us up for its Yeah.
- 1:20:40Speaker 4: Well, and the short answer is that putting it out
- 1:20:43Speaker 4: the first day, as you were worried about, hits more
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: players than all of your playtesters combined. And so that's
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: a real challenge, especially as playtesters aren't seeing like I
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: don't know do how do playtesters see? Are they seeing
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: curated decks? Are you going ahead and pulling individual cards
- 1:21:01Speaker 4: that you're concerned about and like, hey, test this or
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: is it more just a splattering of cards that you're
- 1:21:06Speaker 4: putting in. Are they looking at the individual houses as
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: a whole? How do you really go ahead.
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: And do that kind of kind of kind of all
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: of the above, Like we have, again a bunch of
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: levers that we can pull, we can give them decks,
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: we can give them decks with specific cards in them.
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: They get the full card lists they get. They definitely
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: are encouraged to look at cards and if you like,
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: you see if there's an issue, you can alter the
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: decks too, say okay, well how would this deck go
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: with two of these cards instead of one or two,
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: or if it had this as well in it. So
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: they're definitely like open to kind of test the decks
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: as much as they want and basically for as much
- 1:22:00Speaker 3: as long as they have time to do it.
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: Do you go ahead?
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: Do I go ahead?
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: Go ahead?
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: Or getting little long in it? Two?
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: Actually, because you said that you had spreadsheets, do you
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: have spreadsheets that go ahead and will detail the amount
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: of amber control per house in per like card rarity
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: and then like creature control and like control.
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: Okay, all right, getting a little long in the tooth. There,
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: we're going to go through one more question. There you go,
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: Jar's got it highlighted. All right, We're to go into
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: this one and then we're gonna go unto the rapid fire,
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: which is just quick, real quick questions.
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: One one word answers, because I get to use this, Luke,
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: what game mechanic are you most proud of for bringing
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: into the game?
- 1:22:52Speaker 3: Game mechanic I'm most proud to bring HM, so.
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: I could make it even more general item are you
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: most they could be a card? A game mechanic? What
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: are you most proud of for bringing into the game? So?
- 1:23:11Speaker 3: Hmm that one. Give me a minute to think about
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: that one. All right, I'm gonna have to go back.
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: And while you're thinking of that one, let's go into
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: the rapid fire section, which is AC's most favorite section.
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: I might have made that whole thing up. So, Luke,
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: what's your favorite kind of mountain do?
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: Mountain?
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: Dude?
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: Like the kind that don't have to drink?
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: Oh?
- 1:23:35Speaker 7: Okay, we might have just entered this interview miss miss
- 1:23:39Speaker 7: mister al I'm not going to be happy about that one. Yeah,
- 1:23:43Speaker 7: I know what are you drink that mountain de Yeah?
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: I'm a colo drinker myself.

- 1:24:07Speaker 2: two but pepsi or did you say coke pepsi? You monster?
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: What's your favorite Girl Scout Cookie.

- 1:24:24Speaker 2: Yeah, run totally forgot all my other ones that we
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: normally talk about. How about this one?
- 1:24:32Speaker 5: Look, if we see you at a bar and we
- 1:24:35Speaker 5: want to pick you up, what drink should we order you?
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: All of them?
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: All of them now? But like what, what's what's gonna
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: give us our best chance?
- 1:24:44Speaker 3: Bourbon?
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: Okay? All right?
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: Do you have a favorite bourbon? Ah for the everyday
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: kind of stuff? Not creek?
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: Okay?
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: If I'm feeling fancy angels Vy.
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: I'm gone right, I like it. This good dress car.
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: For or Girl Scout cookies, Wookie? What are we going with?
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: Caramel delights?
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: And I always go on carmel delights. Those are those
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: are my Those are my favorite favorite favorite of all
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: time ever ever. And then I forget what the normal
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: other questions we normally asked her because I didn't write
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: them down normally. I just remember them favorite. Oh yeah,
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: what's your favorite Oreo.
- 1:25:32Speaker 3: Double stuff?
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: Double stuff? That's a good one. It's a solid area.
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: I think that's all about. Okay.
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: In how many sets, Luke, how many sets is it
- 1:25:42Speaker 5: going to take for us to learn that the true
- 1:25:48Speaker 5: purpose of the Crucible is it's a universal doomsday device
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: because it's just going to consume everything across the entire
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: universe jam it into itself.
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: So it's actually a super weapon. How many sense are
- 1:26:01Speaker 4: you talking about? Lost? That's that's exactly what it is, right,
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: it's a super Well, it's just gonna keep I.

- 1:27:16Speaker 5: it's a great opening.
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: It's a great thing like that Dresscourt cannot remember.

- 1:27:29Speaker 2: your favorite wrestler?
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: The Rock?
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: The Rock.
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: That's a good one. It's good. It's it's basic, but
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: it's it's solid answer.
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: I'm nothing but basic here. But they answer your previous
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: question about favorite mechanic bringing into the game. It is
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: the toss up between uh, the house.
