- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's up, everybody, Welcome to
- 0:24Speaker 1: the season. I'm Peter Schrager. I'm joined by my friend
- 0:27Speaker 1: and producer Slash Wingman on this thing, mister Aaron wang Kaufman,
- 0:32Speaker 1: who seems to have a pep in his step right
- 0:34Speaker 1: now because Aaron's team, the Bills, went from being the
- 0:37Speaker 1: eleven seed a few months ago to now sitting pretty
- 0:40Speaker 1: in the two spot of the AFC playoffs, getting a TJ.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Wattless Steelers coming in having a home game the following
- 0:47Speaker 1: week if they win that one. Aaron, if I told
- 0:50Speaker 1: you before the season started and all the drama and
- 0:53Speaker 1: everything that you'd be the two seed in the AFC,
- 0:56Speaker 1: would you sign? Oh?
- 0:57Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean I would happily accept that. There
- 1:01Speaker 2: was a time, I'm sure like on this show, you know,
- 1:04Speaker 2: that I was down trodden and was like, we're not
- 1:07Speaker 2: gonna make it. We're a mess, We're not even going
- 1:11Speaker 2: to be in the playoff race, like eoring it up
- 1:14Speaker 2: over here and here we are.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like we could go through the files
- 1:18Speaker 1: and I was actually really bullish after a loss when
- 1:22Speaker 1: they lost it at Eagles. I came on here and
- 1:24Speaker 1: I was like, there's actually a path if they get
- 1:26Speaker 1: their crap together during the bye week that they can
- 1:27Speaker 1: do this. They haven't lost since. It hasn't been pretty.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I mean again, I told you last week like this
- 1:33Speaker 1: isn't like this red hot team coming in. It has
- 1:35Speaker 1: not been pretty. They threw two red zone turnovers. They
- 1:37Speaker 1: barely won last week, but everyone else lost also. So
- 1:40Speaker 1: here we are the two seed bills and then whether
- 1:42Speaker 1: or not it was pretty or not, there's no standings
- 1:45Speaker 1: for aesthetics. And they're where they are and they're likely
- 1:48Speaker 1: hosting Patrick Mahomes in the second round of the playoffs,
- 1:51Speaker 1: and that's something you would have signed up for before
- 1:53Speaker 1: this season. Let's move right along. The matchups are great,
- 1:55Speaker 1: but if you listen to this podcast, you're in the
- 1:58Speaker 1: coaching hiring and firing world. So much going on right now.
- 2:01Speaker 1: You can find the different lists of the different teams
- 2:04Speaker 1: and what's going on real quick. Hard wins the national
- 2:07Speaker 1: title this week. He has a head start on all
- 2:10Speaker 1: of these coaches due to the NFL's Rooney Rule and
- 2:14Speaker 1: the way things have been shaken out during the Competition Committee.
- 2:17Speaker 1: This past year, no coach currently with an NFL job,
- 2:21Speaker 1: whether it be head coach or a coordinator, can interview
- 2:25Speaker 1: for any other jobs until January twenty first, which is
- 2:29Speaker 1: after the divisional round of the playoffs. Harball, however, he's
- 2:34Speaker 1: exempt from that, so he gets first DIBs on this. Now,
- 2:36Speaker 1: every team is going to have to go through the
- 2:38Speaker 1: Rooney rule. He can't just meet Harbaugh on higher him.
- 2:40Speaker 1: You have to meet at least you know fit those requirements,
- 2:44Speaker 1: meet minority candidates, meet people of color, and then you
- 2:47Speaker 1: can make your decision. But Harball, hypothetically speaking Aaron this week,
- 2:51Speaker 1: he can knock them all out. First impression is important.
- 2:54Speaker 1: He can say, here's who my staff is. Let's get
- 2:56Speaker 1: this thing going and a team almost. I guess by
- 3:01Speaker 1: you know, a formality, we'll meet with other candidates. And
- 3:05Speaker 1: I guess that's not what the NFL I was looking for.
- 3:07Speaker 1: But I think Harbor is really interesting for the LA Chargers.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I've mentioned this on Good Morning Football. I've been saying
- 3:11Speaker 1: it for weeks. I'm sure they're doing their due diligence
- 3:14Speaker 1: on several candidates, and they've put offers or submission for
- 3:18Speaker 1: a question. But Harbor, to me, you're talking about a
- 3:21Speaker 1: guy who has won right away everywhere he's gone. That's
- 3:25Speaker 1: the University of San Diego, that is Stanford, that is
- 3:28Speaker 1: the forty nine Ers, and that is Michigan. And he
- 3:32Speaker 1: does it almost overnight. That is what the Chargers need
- 3:35Speaker 1: right now. They are in a fight for relevance. They
- 3:37Speaker 1: are playing in Los Angeles, which has a bigger team
- 3:40Speaker 1: than them in the Rams right now as far as
- 3:43Speaker 1: relevance and wins. Talking about the USC and UCLA, USC
- 3:47Speaker 1: of course just had Kayleb Williams, a recent Heisman winner.
- 3:50Speaker 1: UCLA just got to commit from Hasselbeck's kid, who's one
- 3:54Speaker 1: of the highest rated prospects. You've got a lot of
- 3:57Speaker 1: things to do in LA. They're opening up a brand
- 3:59Speaker 1: new facility that's supposed to be insanely cool in Orange County.
- 4:03Speaker 1: They've got this quarterback under contract in Justin Herbert, and
- 4:06Speaker 1: they've got a fledgling fan base in LA that's looking
- 4:10Speaker 1: for a reason to believe. To me, that's the fit
- 4:13Speaker 1: for Harball go there. Maybe in the last time around,
- 4:17Speaker 1: it wasn't maybe five years ago for the Chargers, it
- 4:20Speaker 1: wasn't at this moment in time that franchise they need
- 4:24Speaker 1: a leader. They don't have a GM right now. Let
- 4:26Speaker 1: Harball come in as the coach, figure out who he
- 4:28Speaker 1: wants to bring in as GM. Let him have the power,
- 4:31Speaker 1: hand it over to him. Fix us. I don't know
- 4:34Speaker 1: if he's for everybody, but I think the Chargers make
- 4:36Speaker 1: a lot of sense. Also, as we're recording this, Mike
- 4:39Speaker 1: Vrabel and the Titans are no longer together. Verbel was
- 4:43Speaker 1: just let go by Tennessee and Amy Adams Strunk the owner.
- 4:47Speaker 1: She put out a statement saying they redid the front
- 4:49Speaker 1: office last year. They gave this a year of him
- 4:52Speaker 1: and ran Carthon and what they're doing in the front office,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and they're now going to relook at how they have
- 4:57Speaker 1: their coaching staff assembled. Vrabel not for everybody, tough but
- 5:02Speaker 1: also a winner. He's a former Coach of the Year
- 5:05Speaker 1: and several plays are swear by him and say that
- 5:09Speaker 1: he's a player's coach. As tough as he can be.
- 5:11Speaker 1: He might not be everybody, be for everybody, but I
- 5:13Speaker 1: think he's going to be a viable candidate for all
- 5:16Speaker 1: these different vacant head coaching jobs. And I tweeted this
- 5:19Speaker 1: out Aaron, and I think it's interesting that coach of
- 5:22Speaker 1: the Year award. It really means because you get a
- 5:25Speaker 1: piece of hardware and it's cool, But in a lot
- 5:27Speaker 1: of ways it really means nothing. In the last couple
- 5:30Speaker 1: of years, we've seen Jason Garrett win it and fired
- 5:32Speaker 1: shortly thereafter. So Ron Rivera win it after a fifteen
- 5:35Speaker 1: to one season with the Panthers. A couple of years later,
- 5:37Speaker 1: David Tepper fires him. Matt Nagy won it. Three years
- 5:40Speaker 1: later he's fired by the Chicago Bears, and Mike Rabel
- 5:43Speaker 1: wanted a couple of years ago when the Super Bowl
- 5:45Speaker 1: was in La I remember being at SOFI talking to
- 5:47Speaker 1: him at the NFL honors those two years ago. Fired,
- 5:50Speaker 1: so the NFL Coach of the Year. I'm not saying
- 5:52Speaker 1: it's a cursed award or it's bad luck, but usually
- 5:55Speaker 1: it goes to a guy that can turn a team
- 5:57Speaker 1: around overnight or can get a team to make a
- 5:59Speaker 1: giant leap despite great adversity. It doesn't mean you're given
- 6:02Speaker 1: a Supreme Court justice job and you can't be fired.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Rabel's just the late head Coach of the Year winner
- 6:09Speaker 1: who is fired by that very same team. Last, but
- 6:12Speaker 1: not least, I want to talk real quick about the
- 6:15Speaker 1: matchups this weekend. We've got great ones. The schedule as
- 6:18Speaker 1: you see it. I'm going to use this as a
- 6:19Speaker 1: public service announcement as we're doing it. It's AFC, AFC AFC.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Then the three NFC games follow, with the Monday Night
- 6:26Speaker 1: game being on Monday with the with the Eagles traveling
- 6:29Speaker 1: to Tampa and what becomes a very interesting game where
- 6:32Speaker 1: they played earlier this season. The Eagles absolutely walloped them
- 6:36Speaker 1: down there in Florida, and right now I can't see
- 6:38Speaker 1: that same Eagles team doing that. But I want to
- 6:40Speaker 1: make a public service announcement for Saturday Night. I don't
- 6:43Speaker 1: work for these guys. I've never worked for these guys,
- 6:46Speaker 1: but the game is exclusively on Peacock. Aaron, do you
- 6:50Speaker 1: have Peacock?
- 6:51Speaker 2: I do only because what was it two to three
- 6:54Speaker 2: weeks ago.
- 6:55Speaker 1: The Bills game?
- 6:56Speaker 2: That want it for the Bills game, and then last
- 6:58Speaker 2: night it was good to have. Because this is all irrelevant.
- 7:03Speaker 2: But there's this like Direct TV streaming debate or like
- 7:07Speaker 2: they don't have the rights.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Oh doke TV. I'm not friends with DirecTV. They did
- 7:10Speaker 1: me no, but no favors. They're not with the NFL anymore.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't stream Sunday night football unless it's on
- 7:17Speaker 2: Peacock now interesting, or I watch the Spanish language version,
- 7:20Speaker 2: So okay, I do that sometimes. So I do now
- 7:24Speaker 2: have Peacock in order to watch the Bills game, and
- 7:27Speaker 2: then this Saturday night I'll be able to watch the
- 7:29Speaker 2: Dolphins game. But I do think even though we had
- 7:32Speaker 2: Mike North on here talking about it, you're still going
- 7:34Speaker 2: to have people who are gonna forget.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and not only forget, not have the service. And
- 7:38Speaker 1: this is the gamble that the NFL and NBC took.
- 7:42Speaker 1: They said, we're going to pay big money. We're going
- 7:44Speaker 1: to put one of these games on our streamers to
- 7:45Speaker 1: promote the streamer. People are already crushing the decision. I've
- 7:49Speaker 1: seen Bill Simmons crush it. I've seen Chris Russo crush it.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I've seen Mike Francesa crush it. Okay, Well, the more
- 7:56Speaker 1: you crush it, the more the publicity around it increases.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I don't think it's a surprise the NFL said we're
- 8:03Speaker 1: throwing the Chiefs on there. That legitimate is is Peacock.
- 8:06Speaker 1: This isn't the earlier game between the Browns and the Texans,
- 8:08Speaker 1: which a lot of people might say, well, that's not
- 8:10Speaker 1: a matchup. This is defending champions are on Peacock. The
- 8:13Speaker 1: defending champions are on Peacock, and they're facing Tyreek Hill
- 8:17Speaker 1: in his first game back in Iowhead. Mike Triko from
- 8:20Speaker 1: what I gather, is on the call. I don't know
- 8:22Speaker 1: that's been announced yet, and I have to edit that out.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I've been told that that's not from NBC. But someone
- 8:26Speaker 1: said Tarico is doing multiple games this week, which is
- 8:29Speaker 1: mega and legitimizes it in a lot of ways. So
- 8:32Speaker 1: maybe Taylor swifts in the building, maybe Travis Kelcey goes wild.
- 8:35Speaker 1: But that game is on Peacock. And as you know,
- 8:39Speaker 1: there will be many questions the day of from your uncle,
- 8:42Speaker 1: from your aunt, from your friend. Where's this game? How
- 8:45Speaker 1: the hell do I get this game? Can I stream
- 8:47Speaker 1: this game Peacock? It is on Peacock, Help them sign
- 8:51Speaker 1: up for an account. Get encouraging that I don't work
- 8:54Speaker 1: for those guys. I'm just telling you where it is.
- 8:56Speaker 1: I can sit up there. I'm not chilling for Peacock.
- 9:03Speaker 1: It was up to me. All the games will be
- 9:04Speaker 1: on Fox. Right here we go. Our guest is a
- 9:09Speaker 1: guy that I really respect. He is the president of
- 9:12Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Rams. And there is no person I
- 9:15Speaker 1: wanted to speak with more this week than someone who's
- 9:18Speaker 1: had a bird's eye view of all of this stuff.
- 9:21Speaker 1: The golf, Stafford trade, the move to Los Angeles, and
- 9:26Speaker 1: of course the season that has been one of the
- 9:29Speaker 1: most surprising and uplifting ones in all the football that
- 9:32Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Rams have had. I'm really excited to
- 9:35Speaker 1: speak with Kevin Deboff, the president of the Rams. Right
- 9:38Speaker 1: to this. I've wanted to have our guests on the
- 9:56Speaker 1: season with Peter Schrager every week this season and every
- 10:00Speaker 1: week in the offseason. It hasn't come together. And then
- 10:02Speaker 1: this week I begged him, considering the storylines at play
- 10:05Speaker 1: and his vantage point at what I would imagine is
- 10:09Speaker 1: the wildcard game of the weekend, the one that I'm
- 10:11Speaker 1: most excited for. It's taking place Sunday night, It's in Detroit,
- 10:14Speaker 1: It's their first home playoff game in thirty years. And
- 10:18Speaker 1: oh who's coming to town. Sean McVay, Matthew Stafford and
- 10:22Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Rams. This is the president of the
- 10:26Speaker 1: Los Angeles Rams, for my money, maybe the smartest guy
- 10:30Speaker 1: that I deal with on a day to day basis
- 10:31Speaker 1: or a week to week basis, or in any conversations
- 10:34Speaker 1: that we have. I feel like he's got the best
- 10:36Speaker 1: thirty thousand foot view of the league and always provides
- 10:39Speaker 1: insights and has done wonders in Los Angeles for this franchise.
- 10:43Speaker 1: How's that for an intro? Kevin Demoff, President of the Rams,
- 10:46Speaker 1: what's up, buddy?
- 10:47Speaker 3: I think I should just end on that note, right,
- 10:49Speaker 3: that's the mic drop of I've wanted to do the
- 10:52Speaker 3: podcast too though, so this is we finally had a
- 10:55Speaker 3: reason to do it. As we sit here on in
- 10:57Speaker 3: Wildcard weekend. What a fun It's such a crazy time
- 11:00Speaker 3: of year in the NFL. You have fourteen teams excited
- 11:02Speaker 3: about Wildcard weekend and then probably the other half for
- 11:06Speaker 3: dealing with something crazy on their own. So it's probably
- 11:08Speaker 3: my favorite time of year in the NFL, just from
- 11:11Speaker 3: a sheer excitement and interest.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's where we're at. And like today
- 11:16Speaker 1: on Good Morning Football, we started the show and we
- 11:18Speaker 1: talked Belichick and then we went into Wink Martindale and
- 11:24Speaker 1: then we went into Kirk Cousins' contract and we had
- 11:26Speaker 1: a bunch of viewers being like, hello, there's fourteen teams
- 11:29Speaker 1: playing football. But that's the crux right now. It's like
- 11:31Speaker 1: we're at this intersection of teams trying to rebuild and
- 11:34Speaker 1: do it on the fly in January, then the rest
- 11:36Speaker 1: of the league who's still around actually trying to compete
- 11:39Speaker 1: for a Super Bowl title. Let's start with the latter
- 11:41Speaker 1: with you. This is to me, this is golf versus
- 11:45Speaker 1: the Rams. This is Stafford versus the Lions. This is
- 11:48Speaker 1: McVeigh versus Golf. This is oh storylines that are so
- 11:53Speaker 1: rich and so seeped into personal intersections. You are the
- 11:57Speaker 1: president of the Los Angeles Rams. You were the president
- 12:00Speaker 1: of the Los Angeles Rams when they drafted Jared Goff
- 12:02Speaker 1: out of cal first overall trading up to get him.
- 12:06Speaker 1: And then you were the president of the Rams when
- 12:08Speaker 1: you traded Jared Goff for Matthew Stafford. Let's go into
- 12:12Speaker 1: the Jared and Matthew you know storyline. Let's start with
- 12:16Speaker 1: the Jared Goff storyline and where the Rams and you
- 12:20Speaker 1: personally stand as you look to travel to Detroit to
- 12:24Speaker 1: face the guy that you guys took out of college
- 12:26Speaker 1: and then eventually shipped off to go get Stafford. Where
- 12:29Speaker 1: do you stand as far as Jared Goes and his
- 12:31Speaker 1: relationship to the Los Angeles Rams franchise.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Well, look, I love the idea of Matthew Stafford coming
- 12:36Speaker 3: back to Detroit to play in the playoff game. I
- 12:38Speaker 3: just wish it wasn't against Jared Golf right Like for
- 12:41Speaker 3: me personally, I think for our franchise, if there's one
- 12:46Speaker 3: person outside of our fifty three players I pull for
- 12:48Speaker 3: on Sundays, it's Jared, and you know means so much
- 12:52Speaker 3: to our franchise. He's the first pick we trade up
- 12:54Speaker 3: in two thousand and sixteen. He's the first pick of
- 12:57Speaker 3: the Los Angeles Rams in this era of twenty sixteen.
- 13:01Speaker 3: You know, I remember sitting down with him after the
- 13:03Speaker 3: twenty sixteen season when we made the coaching change, in
- 13:05Speaker 3: him looking me and saying, this will never happen again.
- 13:08Speaker 3: I will promise you we will get this fixed, and
- 13:12Speaker 3: we hire Sean. The next year, we go to the playoffs,
- 13:16Speaker 3: we win the division, Jared goes to the Pro Bowl,
- 13:18Speaker 3: We have the number one offense in the NFL. A
- 13:19Speaker 3: year later, we're in the Super Bowl. You know, we
- 13:21Speaker 3: went from two years of sitting in my office saying,
- 13:24Speaker 3: I promise you, I will get this fixed to being
- 13:27Speaker 3: in the Super Bowl, and that was you know, largely
- 13:30Speaker 3: the Seawan Jared pairing, Jared's leadership, and I know it
- 13:34Speaker 3: did an end the way we all wanted to, with
- 13:36Speaker 3: Jared delivering a super Bowl at Sandras but three playoff
- 13:39Speaker 3: appearances in four years, two division titles, a super Bowl
- 13:43Speaker 3: and just one of the best human beings you'll ever meet.
- 13:46Speaker 3: And when the trade went down, you know, my two
- 13:49Speaker 3: kids were at the time, probably eleven and nine, on
- 13:53Speaker 3: the floor in tears, crying. You know, their their favorite
- 13:56Speaker 3: player ever and still cheer for Jared. You know my
- 14:01Speaker 3: daughter will still text with him, you know every now
- 14:04Speaker 3: and then, like this is just one of the people
- 14:06Speaker 3: you will for every day of the week and just
- 14:08Speaker 3: maybe not Sunday at a PM.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I hear you, because you know, there's like this, like
- 14:12Speaker 1: Rams legacy of Jared Goff, And you'd hate to think
- 14:15Speaker 1: the legacy of Jared Goff is the Rams trading him
- 14:17Speaker 1: to Detroit.
- 14:18Speaker 3: No.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I remember NFC Championship game in New Orleans, down thirteen
- 14:24Speaker 1: to nothing, and this guy grits out of victory. I
- 14:26Speaker 1: remember Seattle during the COVID season. He comes off the
- 14:29Speaker 1: bench with about nine fingers because one of them was
- 14:31Speaker 1: broken and he beats Russell Wilson in his building. If
- 14:34Speaker 1: you can encapsulate the good of Jared Goff during his
- 14:37Speaker 1: Rams career, it was really, really good.
- 14:41Speaker 3: There's a picture right outside my office of him doing
- 14:44Speaker 3: the finger roll on Monday Night football after he ran
- 14:47Speaker 3: in the ball, you know, in that epic game against
- 14:49Speaker 3: the Chiefs, Like I remember that, I remember, you know,
- 14:52Speaker 3: one of the greatest passing performances I've ever seen Thursday
- 14:55Speaker 3: Night against the Vikings, you know, on Thursday Night football,
- 14:58Speaker 3: when you know, the first primetime game, you know, regular
- 15:01Speaker 3: season at the Coliseum. You know, just all the good
- 15:04Speaker 3: he did donating backpacks during the pandemic to kids in
- 15:07Speaker 3: need in Inglewood who had no WiFi, who had no backpacks.
- 15:10Speaker 3: I mean, if you needed something, Jared Goff was there,
- 15:13Speaker 3: if you needed a community event. For what he did
- 15:15Speaker 3: for South La Watts Inglewood and those kids, For what
- 15:20Speaker 3: he did for our football team, for what he did
- 15:21Speaker 3: for our fans, Like he's awesome, you know, simply put
- 15:25Speaker 3: in what he's doing in Detroit. You see it on
- 15:27Speaker 3: a daily basis, both on the field and off the field.
- 15:30Speaker 3: He encapsulates what you want in a franchise quarterback to
- 15:33Speaker 3: represent you know, your organization. And I think all these
- 15:36Speaker 3: players now in this era of social media and you know,
- 15:39Speaker 3: immense focus on the NFL. They go through ups and downs.
- 15:43Speaker 4: And you know, when.
- 15:45Speaker 3: I talked to him the day after the trade that night,
- 15:47Speaker 3: I should say, one of the hardest conversations you ever had,
- 15:50Speaker 3: Like this person was single handedly responsible, you know, along
- 15:53Speaker 3: with our coaching staff for getting us, you know, on
- 15:56Speaker 3: the map in Los Angeles. So you know, you can
- 15:59Speaker 3: never boil it down to could they make a play?
- 16:01Speaker 3: Could they do X, Y and Z. You know that
- 16:03Speaker 3: diminishes so much of who Jared Goff is and what
- 16:05Speaker 3: he brings to his teams in this league.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Go back to the drafting of golf, because I think
- 16:11Speaker 1: we forget now that it's been seven years ago, but
- 16:13Speaker 1: you guys were not a top five pick. You trade
- 16:16Speaker 1: up and then you work out Jared Goff and I
- 16:18Speaker 1: remember this from I think a Mike Silver article that
- 16:21Speaker 1: ran on like NFL dot com whipping rains, like the
- 16:24Speaker 1: scene was set and Jeff Fisher lays eyes on him
- 16:26Speaker 1: and sees him throwing in the rain when they said
- 16:28Speaker 1: maybe we should postpone it, and Goff says, no, let
- 16:31Speaker 1: me throw today in horrible weather, and he just like,
- 16:33Speaker 1: can't miss. You were there that day, right, were you? President?
- 16:37Speaker 3: I remember landing in Oakland, you know, and into a
- 16:40Speaker 3: driving rainstorm. We go to the hotel and we're like,
- 16:42Speaker 3: you know, we can postpone this until because it was
- 16:45Speaker 3: early March, you know, we hadn't even made the trade.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Really at that time.
- 16:50Speaker 3: We just thought we might and so we went to
- 16:53Speaker 3: work out Carson Wentz and Jared Goff and back to
- 16:56Speaker 3: back days and it's pouring rain, like, we'll do this
- 16:58Speaker 3: another time, we'll come back, and I think you have
- 17:01Speaker 3: to go back in time. I think there was something
- 17:02Speaker 3: about Jared having small hands with the combine. Yeah, he
- 17:05Speaker 3: was one of your initial you know, Kenny Pickett, small
- 17:08Speaker 3: hands guys, and so you know, the rain and all this,
- 17:11Speaker 3: and he's like, no, I want to go throw, and
- 17:13Speaker 3: so so we go throw and he's on the field.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Now I'm I was a little bit of a whimp
- 17:18Speaker 3: after like the first time minute time inside of course,
- 17:20Speaker 3: I went and stood in the tunnel and watched. But
- 17:24Speaker 3: he's driving the ball, He's throwing a grade. And you
- 17:26Speaker 3: walked away from from that experience being like Okay, like
- 17:30Speaker 3: this guy can throw it, you know, great leader, great personality.
- 17:34Speaker 3: You just connected with him and you know, fearless. And
- 17:37Speaker 3: I think that was always the one thing about Jared.
- 17:39Speaker 3: There was never a challenge. He thought that was too big.
- 17:41Speaker 3: And you look at what he did a cow turn
- 17:44Speaker 3: that program around for I think on one to eleven
- 17:47Speaker 3: to get them in the Armed forces. Bolly, he comes
- 17:49Speaker 3: to the Rams, we go from four to twelve and
- 17:51Speaker 3: death to in the super Bowl. You look at what
- 17:54Speaker 3: he's done in Detroit. This is a person who knows
- 17:56Speaker 3: how to turn franchises around.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I think about golf and it's like, you know, we
- 18:03Speaker 1: saw him on Hard Knocks the first year with you
- 18:05Speaker 1: guys when William Hayes is to talking about dinosaurs. We
- 18:07Speaker 1: see him on Hard Knocks. The second year when you
- 18:09Speaker 1: guys are with the Chargers doing joint Hard Knocks, and
- 18:11Speaker 1: then he gets a year with the Lions. So it's
- 18:14Speaker 1: like we've had three experiences on Hard Knocks. That's like
- 18:16Speaker 1: eighteen episodes of Hard Knocks. Like, okay, I get the
- 18:19Speaker 1: Jared Goff thing. And then this year, I don't know
- 18:21Speaker 1: if he saw this, he was doing Thursday Night Football
- 18:24Speaker 1: the Lions when they bring him on, and before the
- 18:26Speaker 1: Thursday night game, Fitzpatrick said he's a poor man's Matt Ryan,
- 18:29Speaker 1: to which Jared Goff went out of his way on
- 18:32Speaker 1: the panel and looked at Fitzpatrick, who was like, I'm
- 18:34Speaker 1: a poor man's nobody, like what and he was and
- 18:36Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, there's some edge to Jared Goff. So
- 18:39Speaker 1: he's not this pushover. He's not this guy that just
- 18:41Speaker 1: gets a beating in the media and takes it. Was
- 18:43Speaker 1: the first time I've seen him publicly respond to some
- 18:46Speaker 1: criticism or response to those saying he can't get over
- 18:49Speaker 1: the hump? Did you see that side of Jared Golf?
- 18:51Speaker 1: And is that just a side that people take for
- 18:54Speaker 1: granted and say, oh, he's just a nice guy and
- 18:55Speaker 1: Stafford's got the edge, but Golf doesn't have that in him.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Jared has an edge, like it may be harder to find.
- 19:01Speaker 3: You don't see it every day, but he's competitive, you know,
- 19:03Speaker 3: and he believes in himself and he believes in his teammate.
- 19:06Speaker 3: And I always feel bad, you know, the first hard knocks.
- 19:10Speaker 3: I think people went out of their way to portray
- 19:13Speaker 3: him as a kind of clueless rookie.
- 19:16Speaker 4: So that to show.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Okay, he's far away and he's not going to start
- 19:20Speaker 3: the season. I don't think that that was fair to
- 19:22Speaker 3: Jared or the narrative. And look, as much as I
- 19:26Speaker 3: love Hard Knocks, you can still have some element of
- 19:28Speaker 3: reality TV when you're with the team twenty four to seven,
- 19:30Speaker 3: which you choose to show and what you don't, And
- 19:32Speaker 3: I always thought that was a really unfair narrative, you know,
- 19:36Speaker 3: for him. But I think his personality, he's laid back.
- 19:40Speaker 3: He's California, you know, and people sometimes mistake that for
- 19:44Speaker 3: being nonchalant. He's not nonchalant. Now, He's not you're high
- 19:48Speaker 3: strung either. He can be a great balance of the two,
- 19:52Speaker 3: and I think he's found that mix as he's gone
- 19:54Speaker 3: through his career.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Where were you for the Trade? I remember the stories
- 19:57Speaker 1: where McVeigh was in Cabo and he's texting you guys,
- 20:01Speaker 1: and then Stafford is also in Cabo and there's not
- 20:04Speaker 1: tampering going on because the Lion were like, you're open
- 20:07Speaker 1: to search for our trade. There's all these different teams involved,
- 20:10Speaker 1: and then it goes down and it's like, Wow, this
- 20:12Speaker 1: is really happening, and I know someone has to make
- 20:14Speaker 1: that call to Jared Goff, and this is fresh off
- 20:17Speaker 1: a playoff appearance against the Seahawks and a loss in
- 20:19Speaker 1: Green Bay. Where were you during all that and what
- 20:22Speaker 1: are your memories of really executing what was at the
- 20:25Speaker 1: time considered the trade of the decade.
- 20:29Speaker 3: You start John Wolford in the wildcard game against Seattle.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Jared had broken his thumb two weeks earlier. In Seattle,
- 20:36Speaker 3: John gets a concussion. Jared's got to go back in,
- 20:38Speaker 3: you know, eight nine days after surgery. You know, finds
- 20:42Speaker 3: a way to get us to win. We score thirty
- 20:43Speaker 3: one points, which is unbelievable. We go in the next
- 20:45Speaker 3: week to green Bay, play well, but lose. They were
- 20:49Speaker 3: the number one seed that year.
- 20:51Speaker 4: So we fly home.
- 20:53Speaker 3: You kind of go through the end of the year stuff,
- 20:54Speaker 3: and you know, Sean goes to Cabo, runs into Matthew Stafford.
- 21:00Speaker 4: That story is kind of well known.
- 21:01Speaker 3: But it's really the first weekend we've had off since July,
- 21:04Speaker 3: and so you're trying to get a little bit as
- 21:05Speaker 3: far away from ball, and you still have the conference
- 21:08Speaker 3: championship games that that weekend, but you're trying to take
- 21:11Speaker 3: a break from football. Your family hasn't seen you, and
- 21:14Speaker 3: I really remember about eight a m. That morning, you know,
- 21:17Speaker 3: Less snead Our GM had talked to Brad Holmes and
- 21:19Speaker 3: he said this thing could go down today. So I
- 21:22Speaker 3: hunkered down to my home office, you know, all day
- 21:25Speaker 3: and you know, kind of just progressed throughout the day.
- 21:27Speaker 3: And you're like, I thought this would take two to
- 21:29Speaker 3: three weeks, you know, post super Bowl, you know, we're
- 21:33Speaker 3: you know, hey, you go to the Super Bowl this.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Date, you know.
- 21:35Speaker 3: And I think one of the things that happened is
- 21:37Speaker 3: there was a report Friday afternoon that we were interested
- 21:41Speaker 3: in Stafford because it had come out to the lines
- 21:43Speaker 3: that were giving them the permission to have a trade.
- 21:45Speaker 3: And at that time and still I think we worked
- 21:48Speaker 3: so quickly lest Sean our organization that all these teams
- 21:51Speaker 3: that were kind of sniffing around Stafford at the time, Washington, Carolina, Indianapolis,
- 21:57Speaker 3: UH got aggressive and that really drove the trade. And
- 22:03Speaker 3: you know, once that happened, and it was going to
- 22:07Speaker 3: be within twenty four hours, and so you know, Less
- 22:09Speaker 3: at eight am you go to sit in your home
- 22:11Speaker 3: office and I think the trade got done at six
- 22:13Speaker 3: forty five pm.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Yeah, done. And then Stafford comes along, and now what
- 22:18Speaker 1: does this mean you think for Matthew if you've spoken
- 22:20Speaker 1: to him this week, going back to Detroit where he
- 22:23Speaker 1: played for what is it thirteen seasons, he was a
- 22:26Speaker 1: Detroit Lion, and then he comes over to the LA Rams,
- 22:28Speaker 1: wins a super Bowl, and now he's going back there,
- 22:31Speaker 1: so hopefully for you guys spoil their first home game
- 22:34Speaker 1: in thirty years in the playoffs.
- 22:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I haven't asked for about it. I'm sure no
- 22:37Speaker 3: one will last Matthew at all this week.
- 22:40Speaker 1: It's not a topic, not a topic, you know, but.
- 22:42Speaker 3: I think it's probably different for him, right like you
- 22:44Speaker 3: get traded at Los Angeles, you win a Super Bowl
- 22:47Speaker 3: to playoff appearances in three years? He you know, you
- 22:50Speaker 3: go back to twenty twenty one, he had the monkey
- 22:52Speaker 3: on his back of.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Couldn't win a playoff game.
- 22:54Speaker 3: He hasn't won a playoff game. Then he wins four.
- 22:56Speaker 3: I think he's now the second leading quarterback behind like
- 22:59Speaker 3: Patrick Mahomes in terms of playoff wins. Is that Joe
- 23:03Speaker 3: Flacco may now have him be right like I didn't.
- 23:06Speaker 3: That wasn't of my you know, bingo card a month ago.
- 23:08Speaker 3: But you know, I think for Matthew it's going to
- 23:12Speaker 3: be the you know, probably the weight of the expectations
- 23:15Speaker 3: from his time in Detroit and trying to go flip
- 23:17Speaker 3: that franchise. But I think probably from a Rams perspective,
- 23:21Speaker 3: I would imagine this is probably a little bit harder
- 23:24Speaker 3: for Jared than it is from Matthew, just from my
- 23:26Speaker 3: perspective of, Hey, you got to go win the playoff game,
- 23:29Speaker 3: you got to go advance in the playoffs, you know.
- 23:31Speaker 3: I mean, I think you know, there will be talk
- 23:34Speaker 3: this week who won the trade, and I think it's
- 23:38Speaker 3: the true I said, you know, it's a win win.
- 23:40Speaker 3: We won the Super Bowl. Matthew's done a great job
- 23:42Speaker 3: for us. We're thrilled to have him. I don't think
- 23:44Speaker 3: there's anybody else, you.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Know, we'd rather have.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Obviously, Jared and the Lions have had great success, not
- 23:48Speaker 3: only with Jared, with the picks they got. And I
- 23:51Speaker 3: think it's great for once to see a trade in
- 23:52Speaker 3: the NFL work out for both sides, right, you know,
- 23:55Speaker 3: and that people don't have to, you know, pick.
- 23:57Speaker 4: A winner or loser.
- 23:58Speaker 3: But I'm sure for Matthew it'll be meaningful. I think
- 24:00Speaker 3: he said, you know, the Hey, once it kicks off,
- 24:04Speaker 3: it's football, It'll be interesting. That building will be rocking.
- 24:07Speaker 3: You got to know, Oh my gosh, that place is
- 24:09Speaker 3: always rocking. And you know, so thirty years they've been
- 24:13Speaker 3: waiting for this moment in prime time.
- 24:15Speaker 4: I can't wait. It'll be an unbelievable atmosphere.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Yeah now, and we'll watch it in Tarico, who lives
- 24:20Speaker 1: in ann Arbor, Michigan, is going to be on the call.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Like there's a lot of cool symmetry here between the
- 24:24Speaker 1: two franchises on this podcast, as you know, we talked
- 24:27Speaker 1: to coaches, we talked to gms. There's also this other
- 24:29Speaker 1: wrinkle Brad Holmes, who's the general manager and the architect
- 24:33Speaker 1: of this amazing Lions roster. He comes from the Rams also,
- 24:36Speaker 1: and you guys helped nurture him and we had him
- 24:39Speaker 1: on the podcast and he has nothing but glowing stories
- 24:41Speaker 1: about his time working under Lesson in LA I mean,
- 24:44Speaker 1: how impressed are you with what Brad's done in Detroit?
- 24:47Speaker 4: So impressed?
- 24:48Speaker 3: And you know what I love about Brad is, you know,
- 24:51Speaker 3: and it's great for people to remember this time of
- 24:52Speaker 3: year and everybody's thrown around candidate names, nobody was talking
- 24:56Speaker 3: about Brad Holmes. You know, in twenty twenty one and really,
- 25:00Speaker 3: you know, I remember trying to sell him to the Lions,
- 25:02Speaker 3: less trying to sell him to the Lions. You know,
- 25:04Speaker 3: the Falcons had a little bit of interest in the
- 25:06Speaker 3: really did, and once they interviewed them, they were excited.
- 25:09Speaker 4: And what I love.
- 25:10Speaker 3: About the Lions is they've been built in a fearless manner, right,
- 25:14Speaker 3: you know, you go against the grain and you draft
- 25:16Speaker 3: Jamiir Gibbs, you draft you know, Jack Campbell. You know,
- 25:19Speaker 3: they have not just followed what I would call the
- 25:22Speaker 3: normal NFL script. And I think if there's some piece
- 25:25Speaker 3: of DNA Brad Holmes has from the Rams, it's be yourself,
- 25:29Speaker 3: be different. You know, you can't win in this league
- 25:32Speaker 3: following the same blueprint everybody else does.
- 25:34Speaker 4: It's impossible.
- 25:35Speaker 3: No organization, no team is good enough to do the
- 25:38Speaker 3: same things everybody else does and just be better at
- 25:40Speaker 3: all of them. You have to pick a lane to
- 25:42Speaker 3: go be different. And that's what I've loved about how
- 25:45Speaker 3: Brad you know, and Dan Campbell have built the Lions.
- 25:48Speaker 3: They've done it in a uniquely lined way, and that's
- 25:51Speaker 3: what makes it really hard to play them, to beat them,
- 25:53Speaker 3: to compete with them, because they're zigging when everybody else
- 25:56Speaker 3: is a zaga.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think you know, if anything was the
- 26:00Speaker 1: foot the Rams was well, you know, these picks, and
- 26:03Speaker 1: it was like, let's go get these veterans for years
- 26:05Speaker 1: and then for Brad Holmes, to your point, drafting a
- 26:07Speaker 1: running back and an inside linebacker with two first round
- 26:10Speaker 1: picks was f your draft guide. And I love that
- 26:13Speaker 1: about them, and the fact that they hired Dan Campbell,
- 26:15Speaker 1: who was a tight ends coach and wasn't exactly the
- 26:18Speaker 1: first in line as the hot new coordinator, and he's
- 26:20Speaker 1: been perfect for them top to bottom. I know, you
- 26:23Speaker 1: respect a bunch of franchises. You have to. As the
- 26:26Speaker 1: Rams are looked at as one of the crown jewel
- 26:27Speaker 1: franchises in the NFL, and how they've been built and
- 26:29Speaker 1: how you guys have operated, You've got to look at
- 26:31Speaker 1: Detroit and say they're right there too.
- 26:33Speaker 3: When you look at what Detroit's done, and you know,
- 26:35Speaker 3: I think starts with Sheila and kind of trusting you know,
- 26:38Speaker 3: from Rod Wood, Mike Disner, who I think is one
- 26:41Speaker 3: of the smartest executives in the NFL. I love Brad,
- 26:44Speaker 3: you know, I probably like everybody else in the world.
- 26:48Speaker 3: He didn't know what to make of Dan Campbell at
- 26:50Speaker 3: the time he got hired. Yeah, but having done coaching searches,
- 26:53Speaker 3: people always spoke reverentially about Dan Campbell and you know
- 26:58Speaker 3: what they've built, what they've done obviously, Ben Jonson, I
- 27:01Speaker 3: really like Aaron Glenn, you know, always done a nice
- 27:04Speaker 3: up like they have a really good, solid franchise. And
- 27:07Speaker 3: I think when you you know what their success is
- 27:10Speaker 3: not just because they've had picks. It's because you know,
- 27:13Speaker 3: they had a plan, they went and executed it. And
- 27:15Speaker 3: that's what you love to see in the NFL is
- 27:18Speaker 3: when someone says, Okay, we've got a plan, We're going
- 27:20Speaker 3: to go build it, whether it's patient or not. And look,
- 27:23Speaker 3: I think you get back to where we started this show.
- 27:26Speaker 3: The great part about right now is there are fourteen
- 27:28Speaker 3: teams are in the playoffs with hope. They're also a
- 27:30Speaker 3: whole ten other franchises probably now that their fans have
- 27:33Speaker 3: hope for the first time in months. Hey we have
- 27:35Speaker 3: a high draft pick, we're getting a new coach.
- 27:37Speaker 4: We're getting new GM.
- 27:38Speaker 3: You most of the league right now is in the
- 27:40Speaker 3: hope phase, and that's the best phase of the NFL.
- 27:43Speaker 4: And you know, the Rams story.
- 27:45Speaker 3: You know from twenty sixteen on, you know, when we
- 27:48Speaker 3: were one of the worst franchises, you know on the
- 27:50Speaker 3: field in the NFL and the Lions. That's what makes
- 27:53Speaker 3: fans to make the NFL the best product. How quickly
- 27:56Speaker 3: you can turn it and become one of the special franchises,
- 27:59Speaker 3: the leader.
- 27:59Speaker 1: All right, let's go back to twenty sixteen. Fishers fired
- 28:03Speaker 1: midway through the season. Golf finishes it out. Who was
- 28:06Speaker 1: the interim coach? Bones? Bones stopped at John Fossil, Yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 1: John Fossil. And now you're starting from scratch. You're new
- 28:14Speaker 1: in LA and you've got to go on a coaching search.
- 28:17Speaker 1: And right now there are seven teams who are about
- 28:20Speaker 1: to start their coaching search. You guys looked at this
- 28:23Speaker 1: thing having done it already when you got Fisher a
- 28:26Speaker 1: couple of years back. Take us through the coaching search
- 28:29Speaker 1: and how you ended up with Sean mcday, a thirty
- 28:30Speaker 1: year old head coach coming to Los Angeles.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it really starts with you have to
- 28:35Speaker 3: go back to the coaching search. And you know in
- 28:37Speaker 3: twenty twelve, so I when I got to the Rams,
- 28:39Speaker 3: I was hired a couple of weeks after they'd hire
- 28:40Speaker 3: Steve Spagnolo, who I love, and you know I would
- 28:43Speaker 3: love to see get another head coaching opportunity. When we
- 28:46Speaker 3: made the change with Steve after three years, I remember
- 28:49Speaker 3: writing a note to myself, don't wait until you know
- 28:52Speaker 3: black Monday.
- 28:53Speaker 4: You know when you.
- 28:54Speaker 3: Because there's so much craziness that happens at the end
- 28:57Speaker 3: of the season. You find yourself behind in the coaching search,
- 29:01Speaker 3: and to be fair, you can't call, you can't really
- 29:03Speaker 3: do homework and other people you can't. You've got to
- 29:06Speaker 3: be all in for your current staff. And so I
- 29:09Speaker 3: remember that note. So as it got to the point,
- 29:11Speaker 3: you know, we had started three and one in twenty sixteen,
- 29:14Speaker 3: had a pretty good start, and then you know we
- 29:15Speaker 3: were four and ten, four and eleven, you know, we
- 29:18Speaker 3: decided to make the change. I remember with Jeff we
- 29:21Speaker 3: were going to go play the Seahawks on a Thursday
- 29:23Speaker 3: night football, and if he had lost that game, he
- 29:25Speaker 3: would have set the NFL record for losses, and you know,
- 29:28Speaker 3: we just kind of said, I don't think it's fair
- 29:31Speaker 3: to him to break the record for losses. And you
- 29:33Speaker 3: also don't want to go into a Thursday night where
- 29:35Speaker 3: the whole conversation is, you know, are they making a change,
- 29:38Speaker 3: what are they going to do?
- 29:39Speaker 4: How is this going to go? And so we made
- 29:40Speaker 4: the change on a short week.
- 29:42Speaker 3: But what that really did is that gave us a
- 29:44Speaker 3: month to really investigate our franchise. You know, when you
- 29:49Speaker 3: change a head coach, everybody just playing as a coach,
- 29:51Speaker 3: it is an organizational failure. Really go dig into your franchise.
- 29:55Speaker 3: What's working, what's not, what's on the coaches, what's on
- 29:59Speaker 3: the organization, what's on the personnel side, you know, what
- 30:01Speaker 3: do you need to fix to get ready? But also
- 30:03Speaker 3: to go to a deep dive on all of these
- 30:06Speaker 3: coach candidates because you may go in with a leader
- 30:10Speaker 3: you know at the time and what you want to do,
- 30:12Speaker 3: but you're going to go meet people, You're going to
- 30:13Speaker 3: go investigate people. And so we made calls. You know,
- 30:16Speaker 3: really for a month it was myself, let's need Tony
- 30:18Speaker 3: past Georgia works with us, just doing as much homework
- 30:21Speaker 3: as we can on candidates. And you know, I would say,
- 30:25Speaker 3: you know, we started with the list, it was forty
- 30:27Speaker 3: or fifty people just trying to get information and you know,
- 30:31Speaker 3: you try to whittle it down, whittle it down, so
- 30:33Speaker 3: that when you get to this phase, you know, the
- 30:35Speaker 3: post Black Monday, when you can start to do interviews
- 30:38Speaker 3: that you know, hey, these are the eight to ten
- 30:41Speaker 3: people we really want to talk to, we have the
- 30:43Speaker 3: most interest in. And it's not just guessing, because you know,
- 30:48Speaker 3: you get these calls out of the blue.
- 30:51Speaker 4: You make a change, and you would be amazed to calls, right, you.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Know, and you're talking like a random college coach that
- 30:56Speaker 1: you never thought would he gon to be available as
- 30:57Speaker 1: like hey I'm interested.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, like you know, Vince Lombardi's ghost and
- 31:03Speaker 3: most shem Beckler, you know, you know Arab partsy like hey,
- 31:07Speaker 3: you know, I haven't coached in twenty years, but you
- 31:09Speaker 3: know you're like LA and I think you have to
- 31:12Speaker 3: go back in time too. You know, we were new
- 31:14Speaker 3: in LA. We had all this fan fare and we
- 31:16Speaker 3: just stunk. I mean, we're the thirty second offense. We're
- 31:19Speaker 3: four and twelve, and you know, a fan base felt
- 31:22Speaker 3: like it was dwindling and people thought we needed to
- 31:24Speaker 3: make a big splash. And I think there was an
- 31:26Speaker 3: element of us that we definitely thought about that. But
- 31:29Speaker 3: it's like, Okay, go through and find the coach who
- 31:32Speaker 3: is the best fit for your organization at this time.
- 31:35Speaker 3: You know, winning the press conference is great, selling tickets
- 31:37Speaker 3: is great, but it doesn't work and you're back here.
- 31:39Speaker 4: In two three years. You've already screwed up.
- 31:42Speaker 3: And if you could find someone you could really grow
- 31:44Speaker 3: with and you know, who would be uniquely ours, you
- 31:47Speaker 3: would go through that.
- 31:48Speaker 4: And that was kind of the guiding principle.
- 31:49Speaker 3: And I give Stan Kronkey, our own er, a ton
- 31:51Speaker 3: of credit who understood the pressure, you know, about to
- 31:54Speaker 3: build a stadium. You've got to go sell seat licenses.
- 31:56Speaker 4: A suite.
- 31:58Speaker 3: But you know, he had always had this belief that hey,
- 32:01Speaker 3: let's go get the right coach for the l A
- 32:03Speaker 3: RAMS And you know, so we had that month to
- 32:05Speaker 3: do homework and you know, I'm not ashamed you and
- 32:07Speaker 3: I chatted during that month and it's like you're trying
- 32:10Speaker 3: to pick everybody's brain.
- 32:11Speaker 4: You know, what do you know about these candidates?
- 32:13Speaker 3: And one of the things we did, and one of
- 32:15Speaker 3: the reasons you and I would always talk is, you know,
- 32:17Speaker 3: media members who sit in production.
- 32:18Speaker 4: Meetings with coaches talk about it. It was one of
- 32:21Speaker 4: the way we call it.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Every you know, network person we knew tell us who
- 32:24Speaker 3: makes you sit up straighter in your chair, tell us
- 32:26Speaker 3: who grabs your attention because they talk to coordinators every week,
- 32:30Speaker 3: and they talked to Coat. That to me was a
- 32:32Speaker 3: way to find out a little bit more beyond, you know,
- 32:35Speaker 3: and everybody kind of said, you know, Sean McVay, Sean McVay,
- 32:37Speaker 3: And we would ask a question at the end of
- 32:39Speaker 3: every conversation, who's who's the coach? Nobody's talking about who's
- 32:43Speaker 3: going to be a superstar. And I would say, ninety
- 32:47Speaker 3: percent of the time the answer with Sean McVay, and who.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Are you talking when you gusked that, Like, I don't
- 32:50Speaker 1: think it's you talk to me about this. Probably I
- 32:52Speaker 1: would imagine other guys in the media, like Schefter probably
- 32:54Speaker 1: got asked, and all the all the guys who called
- 32:56Speaker 1: the games, probably Aikman.
- 32:58Speaker 3: I talked to Joe buck, Al Michaels, Mike Turico, you
- 33:01Speaker 3: know who the time was at ESPN, you know Bruden
- 33:04Speaker 3: at the time, collins Worth. We talked to all them,
- 33:07Speaker 3: you know, just to get get a sense, and then
- 33:08Speaker 3: you go through your normal channels. You know, we're fortunate
- 33:11Speaker 3: we picked the brains, you know, some of our legends,
- 33:14Speaker 3: you know as well you know, we made calls to
- 33:17Speaker 3: you know, successful Pea gms who had done the search
- 33:20Speaker 3: and kind of you know, the Tony Dungees of the world,
- 33:22Speaker 3: just to get a sense when you have time you
- 33:24Speaker 3: can make you can be thorough. That's where Shawn's name
- 33:28Speaker 3: came up every time. And everybody go in two to
- 33:30Speaker 3: three years, he's going to be great.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Down the line, he'll be great, but not yet, but
- 33:33Speaker 1: down the line.
- 33:35Speaker 3: And I'm thinking to myself, well, two to three years,
- 33:37Speaker 3: if we're doing the search again, it's not me, it's
- 33:39Speaker 3: someone else, right, Like, we're all fired, and you know,
- 33:43Speaker 3: And so we moved Sean kind of to the top
- 33:45Speaker 3: of our curious list. And I remember vividly they were
- 33:49Speaker 3: at the time. They were supposed to be the sixth seed.
- 33:52Speaker 3: They go into the Giants.
- 33:54Speaker 1: This is the Washington Redskins. They had a week seventeen
- 33:56Speaker 1: game against a Giants team that had nothing to play for.
- 33:59Speaker 3: If I'm not mistaken, yeah, nothing to play for. I
- 34:03Speaker 3: think the Giants already clinched. That was I want to
- 34:06Speaker 3: say that the year they.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Wanted to boat the boat trip.
- 34:08Speaker 4: This is the boat the Boat trip.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Yeah, but they eliminated the Redskins in that win.
- 34:12Speaker 3: So they eliminate the Redskins and they score seven points
- 34:14Speaker 3: and you know that put Detroit into the playoffs.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Yep.
- 34:18Speaker 3: And at the time we were looking I think at
- 34:20Speaker 3: both Detroit coordinators.
- 34:22Speaker 4: Uh.
- 34:23Speaker 3: And so now they can't interview that week and Sean
- 34:26Speaker 3: comes available. We were expecting is coming off a seven
- 34:30Speaker 3: point effort against the meaningless Giants and not exactly something.
- 34:33Speaker 1: You say to the local fan base, Hey, look what
- 34:35Speaker 1: we just.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Got correct And you know, the local fan base, by
- 34:38Speaker 3: the way, thinks, you know, we're going to hire Bill
- 34:41Speaker 3: Walsh's head coach.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Yep.
- 34:43Speaker 3: And you know, Mike Shanahan is offensive coordinator, Nick Saban
- 34:46Speaker 3: is defensive coordinator, and you know what, We'll let Belichick
- 34:49Speaker 3: do special teams like that was their vision for you know,
- 34:53Speaker 3: what the twenty seventeen LA rams were going to do.
- 34:55Speaker 3: And so I remember we flipped it. I called Sean
- 34:58Speaker 3: Monday morning and I said, hey, you know, and he
- 35:01Speaker 3: and I had been together on staff in Tampa in
- 35:03Speaker 3: two thousand and eight, but if we had talked five times,
- 35:06Speaker 3: that might that might be a lot. And I said,
- 35:09Speaker 3: want to get you out of LA for an interview
- 35:11Speaker 3: Wednesday or Thursday, and He's like, I scored you know,
- 35:14Speaker 3: typical Sean. I scored seven points? Yes, why are you
- 35:17Speaker 3: calling me? And you know, so we got him lined
- 35:19Speaker 3: up and you know, we had five or six interviews
- 35:22Speaker 3: in LA that week and he comes out Wednesday. And
- 35:25Speaker 3: you go in to that meeting saying, how on earth
- 35:28Speaker 3: can we hire a third year old head coach? And I
- 35:29Speaker 3: would say, you walk out being how on earth do
- 35:31Speaker 3: we not hire that guy?
- 35:33Speaker 1: Yes?
- 35:34Speaker 3: And so we you know, he crushes the interview and
- 35:38Speaker 3: we kind of look at him and say, hey, can
- 35:39Speaker 3: you stay. We called Jared Goff and we're like, hey,
- 35:42Speaker 3: can you come meet, you know, with Sean? And they
- 35:46Speaker 3: come meet. They headed off. Shawn's brought his computer. He's
- 35:49Speaker 3: showing film with Jared and what they can do together.
- 35:52Speaker 3: So then we're like, we got to do something else, so,
- 35:54Speaker 3: you know, kind of keep him in town. We take
- 35:55Speaker 3: him to dinner with all of our wives and you know,
- 35:59Speaker 3: just you hit it off, but he was number five
- 36:02Speaker 3: in the search and you still wanted to go do
- 36:05Speaker 3: kind of the thorough search.
- 36:05Speaker 4: We flew in a way England. We met with both
- 36:07Speaker 4: Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia.
- 36:09Speaker 3: We flew to Florida and finished with Anthony Lynn and
- 36:13Speaker 3: Doug Morone, you know. And and the thing is, at
- 36:16Speaker 3: the time, no one else had interviewed Sean, right, so
- 36:18Speaker 3: you kind of feel like you've got this jas no
- 36:22Speaker 3: one's talking about.
- 36:23Speaker 4: And then you know, so.
- 36:27Speaker 3: I remember Sunday night we finished with you know, the
- 36:29Speaker 3: interview you know, in Florida, and I at that time,
- 36:32Speaker 3: the Niners decided they're going to interview Sean.
- 36:34Speaker 1: And his grandpa was the GM there.
- 36:36Speaker 3: You're like, ash, yeah, you know, and you know, you
- 36:39Speaker 3: kind of kind of keep track of all this. And
- 36:41Speaker 3: so I called him and I said, Hey, I want
- 36:42Speaker 3: you to come back out to lah meet with the
- 36:45Speaker 3: owner and.
- 36:46Speaker 4: All of us. Again, I said, I know you're a
- 36:48Speaker 4: interviewed with the Niners tomorrow.
- 36:50Speaker 3: Do well, but not too well, you know, and whatever
- 36:53Speaker 3: you do, do not accept the job on the spot.
- 36:56Speaker 3: So we're flying back on Monday and we're flying back
- 37:00Speaker 3: in texting him are you out of the meeting? Hey?
- 37:02Speaker 3: What time?
- 37:02Speaker 4: Wing? Three hours? Four? Ur nothing? And I'm fuming.
- 37:06Speaker 3: We're on plane and I'm looking at Lesson Tony and
- 37:08Speaker 3: I'm I'm leaving.
- 37:10Speaker 1: How do we let him leave the building.
- 37:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm losing my right, Like, I can't believe we
- 37:14Speaker 3: just didn't offer this to him. You know, we should
- 37:17Speaker 3: have done this. And what was crazy about the search was,
- 37:20Speaker 3: you know, on the plane ride we've now done in
- 37:22Speaker 3: our ten interviews and we're comparing notes, we all had
- 37:26Speaker 3: sean number one, we all had different number twos and threes.
- 37:30Speaker 1: So the backup plan wasn't even unanimous.
- 37:33Speaker 3: We didn't have a backup plan. Like we were like,
- 37:35Speaker 3: what do we do if he says no? And we're
- 37:37Speaker 3: like we finally we stop in Texas to refuel and
- 37:43Speaker 3: finally get a hold of him and he's like I crushed,
- 37:46Speaker 3: And I'm like you're still on the plane and he's like,
- 37:47Speaker 3: oh yeah, I'll see you, you know, tomorrow and so now.
- 37:50Speaker 3: But the crazy part about this too is we land
- 37:53Speaker 3: back in LA and I go to dinner that night
- 37:56Speaker 3: with I understand cranky and he's owned multiple teams, had
- 38:00Speaker 3: great success, but he's always had veteran head coaches. So
- 38:04Speaker 3: you think about Arson Vanger at Arsenal Ledger a coach,
- 38:07Speaker 3: George Carl, Jeff Fisher, you know, Joel Quinnville, like and
- 38:10Speaker 3: you go through all the sports and you're like, hey,
- 38:13Speaker 3: I really think the best person is this thirty year
- 38:15Speaker 3: old you've never heard of.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Who just lost to the Giants, and we who.
- 38:19Speaker 3: Just lost the Yeah, isn't playing in the playoffs. And
- 38:23Speaker 3: we're watching the Clemson Alabama National championship game and Hunter
- 38:27Speaker 3: Renfrow and Deshaun Watson score and I'm like, look, we'll
- 38:30Speaker 3: go to dinner tomorrow to do it and what I
- 38:34Speaker 3: what else?
- 38:34Speaker 4: Remember? The same time, we get back to LA and.
- 38:38Speaker 3: I walk back in the office and Joanna Hunter, who
- 38:41Speaker 3: works for us, who helps run our communications along with
- 38:44Speaker 3: artists Wiman, and she's like, you know, everybody thinks you
- 38:48Speaker 3: tony and lesser morons and you've never won anything, and
- 38:51Speaker 3: you're running this coaching search and everybody else is hiring
- 38:53Speaker 3: consultants and now they are all these rumors you want
- 38:55Speaker 3: to hire a thirty year old, Like, do you guys
- 38:57Speaker 3: know what you're doing? I love this and I'm like,
- 39:00Speaker 3: I think we do, but maybe not. She's like, you know,
- 39:02Speaker 3: you should get some other validation before you do this,
- 39:05Speaker 3: And so I sit down and I think, you know,
- 39:08Speaker 3: all right, I love.
- 39:09Speaker 1: That Joanna is in the office and she's like, someone's
- 39:12Speaker 1: got to be a voice of reason here.
- 39:13Speaker 3: And anybody knows Joanna, She's always the voice tell you yeah,
- 39:17Speaker 3: you know. And and so she goes, what about someone
- 39:21Speaker 3: like Marshall fulk And I'm like, Marshall thinks we should
- 39:24Speaker 3: hire a veteran coach. So I call him and I'm like, no, no,
- 39:27Speaker 3: I'm not going to do this, and like we all
- 39:29Speaker 3: do our best thinking in the shower. The next morning,
- 39:32Speaker 3: I'm showering, I'm like, you know what, She's right. So
- 39:33Speaker 3: I call Marshall. I'm like, hey, we're going to dinner tonight,
- 39:36Speaker 3: Stan myself, Sean, would you join? And he goes, oh,
- 39:40Speaker 3: I'd love to. He goes, but you should hire a
- 39:42Speaker 3: veteran coach, like you need offense to do this. I'm like,
- 39:45Speaker 3: that's why you're perfect. You don't believe in this guy.
- 39:48Speaker 3: So and you know there's been a lot made, you know,
- 39:50Speaker 3: the Spago story has been written.
- 39:52Speaker 1: That's after the fact, right or is that that's that's.
- 39:55Speaker 3: The next night, so we go to dinner and Marshall
- 39:58Speaker 3: was walking in and he's telling Stan like, hey, I
- 40:00Speaker 3: really appreciated becoming like, I don't believe in this kid.
- 40:03Speaker 3: Whatever you know, Sean and Mark Shoal and knock it out.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Of the park and they took two of the smartest
- 40:10Speaker 4: football people who ever met.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Right, Marshall, Funk is brilliant. You listen to talk football
- 40:14Speaker 1: rush of Funk like he he could be an NFL
- 40:16Speaker 1: head coach right now if he wanted to be.
- 40:17Speaker 3: Yeah, And he walks out of dinner and he turns
- 40:19Speaker 3: the stand and he goes, if you got you let
- 40:20Speaker 3: that guy leave the building, you.
- 40:22Speaker 4: Know, shame on you.
- 40:24Speaker 3: Oh, And that's you know, that's how we wound up
- 40:26Speaker 3: hiring Sean. But I would tell you like running a
- 40:29Speaker 3: coaching search for the two most grueling weeks probably of
- 40:32Speaker 3: your life. And I'm so glad the NFL has now
- 40:35Speaker 3: stretched out the calendar to allow for better decision making,
- 40:39Speaker 3: because it is really hard and intense and a drain
- 40:44Speaker 3: on your organization. But the one thing you know that
- 40:47Speaker 3: you go through you meet all these people, You get
- 40:49Speaker 3: a chance to build all these you know, great relationships.
- 40:54Speaker 3: You know, And and I'll tell a funny story. Coach
- 40:57Speaker 3: we saw this year. At one point we interviewed in
- 41:00Speaker 3: our head coaching search who kept calling Tony Pastors who
- 41:03Speaker 3: works with us. He kept calling him by the wrong
- 41:05Speaker 3: first name. The whole inner, I won't and we never
- 41:10Speaker 3: stopped him. And so now every time we see this coach,
- 41:13Speaker 3: he walks over and he's like, hey, Kevin, he goes,
- 41:16Speaker 3: great to see you, Paul.
- 41:17Speaker 4: That's what you called Tony Paul the whole time and relationship.
- 41:23Speaker 3: And by the way, this coach still finished in our
- 41:25Speaker 3: top three, got across the board like great, dude. And
- 41:29Speaker 3: and so you know, you get all these stories and
- 41:31Speaker 3: you meet all these people and you go through it,
- 41:33Speaker 3: but you also learned so much about your building. I
- 41:35Speaker 3: remember one coach who interviewed was not the same one
- 41:38Speaker 3: asked us a question and he goes, hey, when I
- 41:39Speaker 3: get in your building up you hire me? Who am
- 41:42Speaker 3: I going to find out? Is the problem that you
- 41:43Speaker 3: didn't tell me about?
- 41:45Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 41:45Speaker 3: Good question, and it blew us all away, and we
- 41:47Speaker 3: actually left that meeting. We all kind of stumbled our
- 41:50Speaker 3: way through the answer because you don't want to like
- 41:51Speaker 3: pull someone there, and we wound up making two changes
- 41:55Speaker 3: the following week as a result of that question.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Do you have an animus answer? That person's toxic for
- 41:59Speaker 1: the building, But that's thanks for putting the mirror on us.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Ye, And those are the elements I think when you
- 42:04Speaker 3: have a coach insearch and you make a GM change,
- 42:06Speaker 3: you actually have to be pretty introspective about, like are
- 42:09Speaker 3: you setting the next coach up for success or are
- 42:10Speaker 3: you just hoping that they're a miracle worker who can
- 42:13Speaker 3: fix everything that was wrong before.
- 42:16Speaker 4: Not.
- 42:16Speaker 3: Usually the issue is in your building, and the coaches
- 42:19Speaker 3: emblematic of that more than it's just the coach themselves.
- 42:23Speaker 1: You mentioned the Spago story, which might be legendary lower
- 42:27Speaker 1: in our circles, but the listener might not know it.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Can you share us the Spago story?
- 42:31Speaker 3: Yeah, So we go to Spago and Uh, a restaurant
- 42:34Speaker 3: in Beverly Hills. Wolfgang Park is the owner, chef famous,
- 42:38Speaker 3: you know, one of probably the first star celebrity chef.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:42Speaker 3: And so he comes by the table and he knows
- 42:44Speaker 3: Stan pretty well and he goes, Stan, we got to
- 42:49Speaker 3: hire a coach. You know who are we hiring?
- 42:52Speaker 4: I'm so excited. I'm such a fan.
- 42:54Speaker 3: And Sean's sitting right there and he's like, oh, Marshall Falk,
- 42:58Speaker 3: that's great, nice to meet you. He's looking at Sean
- 43:00Speaker 3: like he's the intern, and you know, he's asking. He's
- 43:03Speaker 3: like he's like, I hear we may get and he rattles.
- 43:05Speaker 4: Off a bunch of names.
- 43:07Speaker 3: Yeah, and like in Sean's sitting right there, probably shrinking
- 43:10Speaker 3: back in his chair, you know, and so we're just
- 43:13Speaker 3: kind of laughing.
- 43:13Speaker 4: We go through it.
- 43:14Speaker 3: Uh, Fergie and Josh dou Hamm will come walking by like, hey,
- 43:18Speaker 3: who are we going to hire?
- 43:19Speaker 1: Like and your tables? Sean has he already accepted the
- 43:23Speaker 1: job or no, no.
- 43:23Speaker 3: We haven't even offered it to him. This is like
- 43:25Speaker 3: his final interview.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Oh my god, I've been in these rooms where everyone
- 43:28Speaker 1: where everyone's looking at everyone else, but you I understand
- 43:30Speaker 1: where Sean's feeling better, you.
- 43:32Speaker 3: Know, and you know. So we go through the sun
- 43:34Speaker 3: and then you know, Sean tells the story even better
- 43:36Speaker 3: than anybody. But we get to the end of the night,
- 43:37Speaker 3: like Sean crushes it. So we go to the hotel.
- 43:40Speaker 3: He and Stan are standing across the street and he's
- 43:43Speaker 3: expecting Stan to be like, hey, you crushed it. You're
- 43:46Speaker 3: my guy, Like let's go do this, and stands like
- 43:48Speaker 3: all right, great, I'll see tomorrow Like no, no, no, Sean.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Sean wakes up the next day and he's like he's
- 43:55Speaker 3: laying in bed. He's like, you know, you got a
- 43:57Speaker 3: good job in Washington. You're a coordinator and the rest
- 43:59Speaker 3: is his history, and you know, so grateful to have him.
- 44:02Speaker 3: But you know, I still it's hard for me to
- 44:05Speaker 3: believe that was seven years ago.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Crazy because like yesterday, I remember being in Atlanta because
- 44:10Speaker 1: I was doing a playoff game, Seahawks versus Falcons. I
- 44:13Speaker 1: was the sideline reporter, and I remember talking to Sean
- 44:16Speaker 1: from his vantage point going into those meets, and I
- 44:19Speaker 1: think you guys had him staying at like the Four
- 44:21Speaker 1: Seasons in Westlake Village maybe or it was maybe the
- 44:24Speaker 1: Chateau Mormont. It was some fancy hotel, and he was
- 44:26Speaker 1: impressedly He's like they told me I could order anything
- 44:28Speaker 1: from room service for free, and I'm like, I love
- 44:30Speaker 1: this about you, Like you're he's thirty years old, never
- 44:32Speaker 1: been treated like this, and like, you guys really rolled
- 44:34Speaker 1: out the red carpet. But he had no idea he
- 44:35Speaker 1: was getting offered that job.
- 44:37Speaker 4: No, I mean, I think he knew he had crushed
- 44:39Speaker 4: it both times.
- 44:39Speaker 3: And there's no one more self confident in a positive
- 44:43Speaker 3: way than Sean McVay. But you know, you got to
- 44:46Speaker 3: go convince the owner, who's like, I'm really going to
- 44:48Speaker 3: go trust the future of my franchise in LA. This
- 44:52Speaker 3: bet that I've made Sofi Stadium, moving a team on
- 44:56Speaker 3: a thirty year old and you know, I would say
- 45:00Speaker 3: the history of the Rams can be written by Stan
- 45:02Speaker 3: Cronckey making the two biggest bets in the NFL the
- 45:04Speaker 3: past decade.
- 45:05Speaker 4: Hey, I'm going to go build a stadium in LA
- 45:06Speaker 4: and go for it.
- 45:07Speaker 3: And I'm going to go hire a thirty year old
- 45:08Speaker 3: head coach. And you know we're fortunate enough to hoist
- 45:11Speaker 3: a Lombardi Trophy in Sofi Stadium Super Bowl fifty six.
- 45:15Speaker 4: You know, those two beats came to fruition.
- 45:17Speaker 1: I said, to start this thing the thirty thousand foot guy.
- 45:20Speaker 1: For me, you look at the entire league as a whole,
- 45:22Speaker 1: but you also know pretty much every piece of the organization.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Here's a question I have when these coaches are interviewing
- 45:28Speaker 1: and they say, yeah, my defensive coordinator is going to
- 45:30Speaker 1: be this guy and my offensive coordinator is going to
- 45:31Speaker 1: be that guy. Is there a budget for that or
- 45:34Speaker 1: is it like, how does that work with a team
- 45:35Speaker 1: or is that team specific. I know it's very in
- 45:37Speaker 1: the weeds, but as these coaches are all interviewing right now.
- 45:39Speaker 1: They come in with a plan, but maybe the twenty
- 45:42Speaker 1: year defensive coach has a different price tag than the
- 45:45Speaker 1: assistant who is, you know, three years into his NFL career.
- 45:49Speaker 3: Well, the really funny part is if you do ten
- 45:50Speaker 3: of these, eight of them say their defensive coordinator is
- 45:53Speaker 3: going to be the same guy, same guy, right right,
- 45:55Speaker 3: So you do the meat, you do the interview in
- 45:57Speaker 3: the morning, and they're like, you know, hey, you know
- 46:00Speaker 3: Raheem Morris is going to be my defensive coordinator And
- 46:02Speaker 3: you're like, okay, Like I kind of like Raheem, like that's.
- 46:04Speaker 4: A great addition.
- 46:05Speaker 3: Then you do the to be the next thing like, hey,
- 46:07Speaker 3: and I talked to Raheem Morris, he wants to be
- 46:09Speaker 3: in my DC. And then you realize it's all you know,
- 46:12Speaker 3: that part you have to throw out, Like and even
- 46:15Speaker 3: now when I advise coaches to interview, I'm like, don't
- 46:18Speaker 3: don't talk about names, because you don't know if you
- 46:21Speaker 3: can get them the salaries, the budgets, the competition. They
- 46:24Speaker 3: go talk about your vision for what you want each
- 46:27Speaker 3: coach to be. Hey, my defensive coordinator, do they play
- 46:29Speaker 3: an attacking style? Are they blitzing or do they play more,
- 46:32Speaker 3: you know three four four three, you know offense or
- 46:35Speaker 3: we a play action team, or we a deep shot team,
- 46:37Speaker 3: or we a run heavy team.
- 46:39Speaker 4: And then say the guys who fit that are this?
- 46:42Speaker 3: You know walk through you know your vision for each
- 46:44Speaker 3: coaching position because the names, you know, you might get
- 46:48Speaker 3: enamored with a name. Whether the coach can deliver them
- 46:51Speaker 3: or not, you have no clue. And you know, especially
- 46:54Speaker 3: you know you might make the last tire. You might
- 46:56Speaker 3: hire someone after the super Bowl and that coach has said,
- 47:00Speaker 3: you know, hey, I can't wait. I got to take
- 47:01Speaker 3: a sure thing. That's really the hard part. You know,
- 47:05Speaker 3: when you go through this conversations. Now I'll remember, you
- 47:07Speaker 3: know when Seawn interviewed, he said, Wade Phillips, Waite Phillips
- 47:11Speaker 3: is going to be so we called Waite Phillips, you
- 47:13Speaker 3: know during the break and like is he real Sean
- 47:17Speaker 3: Puller And he's like, oh no, Wade love Sean. You know,
- 47:20Speaker 3: he'd loved to go and sure enough, like it's a
- 47:22Speaker 3: great credit to Sean. And where he was at thirty
- 47:24Speaker 3: he got everybody he listed.
- 47:26Speaker 1: That first staff was who it was Wade, it was
- 47:28Speaker 1: Joe Barry, it was on offense, the floor first or no, Yeah,
- 47:32Speaker 1: Matt Lafleur was Zach came on as Zach Taylor was
- 47:37Speaker 1: our assistant wide receivers coach. Think about that.
- 47:40Speaker 3: Yeah, so that staff had Shane Waldron was our tight
- 47:43Speaker 3: ends coach.
- 47:44Speaker 1: The OC in Seattle right now, No, the o C Aaron.
- 47:46Speaker 3: Cromer was the line coach now the OC kind of
- 47:49Speaker 3: the assistant OC in Buffalo. Then you had Matt Lafleur
- 47:54Speaker 3: trying to think of QB coach was Greg Olsen who's
- 47:58Speaker 3: now ye, who's now in Seattle and went on to
- 48:01Speaker 3: become the Raiders, you.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Know o C under me.
- 48:05Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, And so you know, just that staff, you know,
- 48:07Speaker 3: on the offense, they've all gone on to you know,
- 48:10Speaker 3: the great things. But you think about like our basically
- 48:11Speaker 3: quality controlled coach is now one of the best head
- 48:13Speaker 3: coaches in the NFL, and Zach Taylor, and then you
- 48:16Speaker 3: go to defense, you had you know, Joe Barry, you
- 48:18Speaker 3: had wayde Phillips, Bill Johnson, Aubrey Pleasant, uh, Jiro Everro.
- 48:23Speaker 4: You know, I mean, just like great great staff.
- 48:26Speaker 1: Out of the gates. That's such a test. I mean,
- 48:28Speaker 1: think about that, this is a thirty year old coach.
- 48:31Speaker 3: And convinced John Fossil to stay, which was you know
- 48:33Speaker 3: a great you know, someone who had been the interim coach,
- 48:35Speaker 3: who had great opportunities to like thirty year old coach
- 48:37Speaker 3: put together a great staff. But you know, everybody's got
- 48:39Speaker 3: a budget versus and coaches. You know, it's but it's
- 48:43Speaker 3: kind of like a salary gap, right, no matter what
- 48:44Speaker 3: it is, you're going to pay the mode you get.
- 48:46Speaker 3: Go get the defensive coordinator. Hey, maybe I won't spend
- 48:49Speaker 3: as much on the linebackers coach, Go get the OC
- 48:53Speaker 3: tight ends coach.
- 48:53Speaker 4: I can fudge a little bit. You know, it's no
- 48:56Speaker 4: different than that.
- 48:57Speaker 3: You know, you go with the people that are the
- 48:59Speaker 3: foundational pieces, and you want to make sure you get
- 49:01Speaker 3: the coach you know everything you can and and like
- 49:04Speaker 3: all budgets, you know, they usually go over or sheepishly
- 49:07Speaker 3: and you kind of just let him do it.
- 49:10Speaker 1: It's no secret that, uh, Sean's a friend, and I've
- 49:13Speaker 1: been a fan of Sean's. There's no secret that guys
- 49:15Speaker 1: like Kingsbury and Salah and Hackett I've got great relationships with.
- 49:19Speaker 1: But if there's one guy in the league that I'm
- 49:22Speaker 1: rooting to have success and get another shot at a
- 49:24Speaker 1: head coaching position. It's your current defensive coordinator, Raheem Morris.
- 49:28Speaker 1: I see that he's been asked to interview at a
- 49:30Speaker 1: few places. You see raw every single day there in
- 49:33Speaker 1: the building. Make the case for Raheem Morris NFL head coach.
- 49:37Speaker 3: One of the best leaders in culture builders I've ever
- 49:39Speaker 3: been around. Wow, and I was with Raheem and Tampa.
- 49:43Speaker 3: But this is the guy who makes your building better.
- 49:45Speaker 3: He's the glue guy who brings everywhere together, your equipment staff,
- 49:49Speaker 3: your training staff, your pr the building and the I
- 49:52Speaker 3: can coach like and I think, you know, I start
- 49:54Speaker 3: with the culture and you know leader, because you know
- 49:58Speaker 3: that's what you see every day. I look at this
- 50:00Speaker 3: year's defense. You know PFAF had US rated thirty ninth.
- 50:03Speaker 3: I think on defense coming into the year, you know,
- 50:07Speaker 3: everybody just killed.
- 50:08Speaker 4: You know.
- 50:08Speaker 3: We had national media show up to camp like it's
- 50:11Speaker 3: like major league, Like, who are yeah? Yeah, the groundskeepers
- 50:16Speaker 3: sitting there, you know, you know, can't say, you know,
- 50:19Speaker 3: you know these guys are blank, you know, and you
- 50:22Speaker 3: know it's Aaron Donald and ten nobody's And we come
- 50:25Speaker 3: out of the gate and we shut out Seattle in
- 50:27Speaker 3: the second half more than thirteen points, and we've had
- 50:29Speaker 3: five shutout halps this year.
- 50:32Speaker 4: I think the defense finished.
- 50:33Speaker 3: Seventeenth, eighteenth made impact plays brought. I mean, Kobe Turner
- 50:36Speaker 3: should win Defensive Rookie of the Year. You know, nine
- 50:39Speaker 3: sacks from an interior position, Third round pick Pyron Young
- 50:42Speaker 3: number two in sacks as an outside linebacker.
- 50:45Speaker 1: Both rookies. Unbelievable.
- 50:47Speaker 3: Both rookies are starting Darien Kendrick and Russy Yeast.
- 50:50Speaker 4: It's safety.
- 50:50Speaker 3: I mean, Christian Roseboom, guys we had hopes for, but
- 50:54Speaker 3: nobody's heard. Sure you know of these guys and turn
- 50:57Speaker 3: them into a unit. And you know, look where I
- 50:59Speaker 3: get frustrated. And this isn't a knock. I'm a big
- 51:02Speaker 3: Brandon Staley fan, and Brandon did an amazing job for
- 51:05Speaker 3: us in twenty twenty. You know, led the league in defense,
- 51:09Speaker 3: you know, but we go to the playoffs, we give
- 51:11Speaker 3: up five hundred yards to Green Bay in the divisional
- 51:14Speaker 3: round and we get forty four slips for Brandon Staley
- 51:18Speaker 3: as head coach and he can have his pick of jobs.
- 51:19Speaker 3: In twenty twenty one, Raheem Morris wins the Super Bowl.
- 51:23Speaker 3: You know, nine sacks in the second half.
- 51:26Speaker 4: You know, we have this.
- 51:26Speaker 3: Year and you're fighting to get people to interview, and
- 51:31Speaker 3: you know, to me, that's just where the system you know,
- 51:33Speaker 3: is a little bit broken in our world. And you
- 51:35Speaker 3: get in a room with Raheem and he was fortunate
- 51:37Speaker 3: enough to get pretty deep with the Colts you know,
- 51:39Speaker 3: last year. But he has a vision for how he
- 51:42Speaker 3: wants to play football, how he wants to lead. You know,
- 51:45Speaker 3: I left Tampa the year he got the head coaching job,
- 51:48Speaker 3: and you know, obviously he took that team to ten wins.
- 51:51Speaker 1: And with Josh Freeman and a bunch of guys no
- 51:54Speaker 1: one knew, and they went ten games.
- 51:56Speaker 3: And you know, from two thousand and eight until Tom
- 51:59Speaker 3: Brady showed up, that franchise never won double digits.
- 52:02Speaker 4: Raheem Morris had their only double digit season.
- 52:04Speaker 3: He goes to Atlanta as the interim coach, you know,
- 52:07Speaker 3: does a great job beat I think holds Patrick Mahomes
- 52:10Speaker 3: to his lowest total, you know, of the year during.
- 52:13Speaker 1: I remember that in Arrowhead, Yeah, and.
- 52:15Speaker 3: An Arrowhead, And so I think you have this dynamic coach,
- 52:18Speaker 3: you know who who has learned under a nuts stay.
- 52:21Speaker 3: Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, dan Quinn, Mike Tomlin, John Gruden. Mine,
- 52:26Speaker 3: I mean Jay, I mean like Mike Shanahan, like he
- 52:29Speaker 3: has been with the Pantheon, you know of coaches, he'll
- 52:32Speaker 3: he'll go crush it, you know. Kyle Shanahan says if
- 52:35Speaker 3: he had if you were telling an owner of the
- 52:36Speaker 3: first person I.
- 52:37Speaker 1: Saw this, I'll be honest. The quote was, if an
- 52:40Speaker 1: owner was to ask me, the first person who they
- 52:42Speaker 1: should hire as a head coach is Raheem Morris. And
- 52:45Speaker 1: that's not a staff member on his team. I saw
- 52:48Speaker 1: Mike Tomlin came out and had a very public statement
- 52:50Speaker 1: about you're talking about the luminaries of the NFL right now. McVeigh,
- 52:54Speaker 1: Shanahan and Tomlin. I'll say that he's the guy. So
- 52:56Speaker 1: what what are we doing?
- 52:58Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 52:58Speaker 3: No, And I think that to me is, you know,
- 53:00Speaker 3: I'm hopeful of this cycle. And look, let's also be honest.
- 53:03Speaker 3: He's got an amazing opportunity Sunday night. Ben Johnson right
- 53:07Speaker 3: now is fifteen dollar man, and you know, so you know,
- 53:15Speaker 3: I am hopeful, and not just that we go win
- 53:16Speaker 3: the game, but what a great opportunity for us as
- 53:19Speaker 3: a team to go in. But it's certainly also for
- 53:22Speaker 3: for Raheem for this defense to go have a shot at,
- 53:25Speaker 3: you know, one of the hottest coordinators. And I'm hopeful
- 53:28Speaker 3: that that will be, you know, just one case for
- 53:31Speaker 3: him that the people can make coming out of Sunday night.
- 53:34Speaker 3: And you know, I am hopeful we walk you know,
- 53:37Speaker 3: off that field, a Ford field on Sunday that everybody says,
- 53:40Speaker 3: Raheem Morris is the guy I got to have as
- 53:42Speaker 3: our head coach.
- 53:43Speaker 1: I love that. I'm gonna wrap with you soon, but
- 53:45Speaker 1: I've got a couple other things for you. I hope
- 53:47Speaker 1: that's okay, waits right now, a couple more things. I
- 53:49Speaker 1: love this, let's go, Let's go, but more of this
- 53:53Speaker 1: being a pitch to Hollywood studios and to a very
- 53:57Speaker 1: saturated sports doc community. I mean, I don't there might
- 54:01Speaker 1: not be a sports story that hasn't had a documentary
- 54:02Speaker 1: made about it in the last five years. Streamers. Hello, uh, Kevin.
- 54:07Speaker 1: We have talked about this stage in your career where
- 54:10Speaker 1: you you jumped at an entrepreneurial opportunity in the boom
- 54:17Speaker 1: of the Internet in your early to mid twenties. Can
- 54:20Speaker 1: you explain the story and the pool of talent that
- 54:23Speaker 1: you had around you and you guys just being a
- 54:26Speaker 1: little early on what feels like what could have been
- 54:28Speaker 1: the Facebook of sports.
- 54:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I know.
- 54:31Speaker 3: So my first job at a college is a company
- 54:32Speaker 3: called Broadband Sports, which was I would say today it
- 54:36Speaker 3: would be an amalgamation of the Athletic Bleacher Report, SB Nation,
- 54:42Speaker 3: Rodeo World, and maybe the Player's Tribune. So we had
- 54:45Speaker 3: a bunch of player websites so you could go to
- 54:48Speaker 3: you know, Kobe Bryant dot athletes Direct dot com.
- 54:53Speaker 4: We did.
- 54:53Speaker 3: We built team websites for the Cowboys and the Raiders,
- 54:56Speaker 3: which is one of the ways I got my introduction
- 54:58Speaker 3: in the NFL.
- 54:59Speaker 4: You know.
- 54:59Speaker 3: We built homepages for if you went to go look
- 55:01Speaker 3: up Los Angeles Rams on AOL. That was all of
- 55:04Speaker 3: our work and our content.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Do you have a staff that would like that would
- 55:08Speaker 1: write the articles or it was you guys.
- 55:10Speaker 3: We did a little bit and we outsourced and we
- 55:12Speaker 3: you know ap B like I remember, we tried to
- 55:14Speaker 3: hire Adam Schefter from the Denver Post Intercoming, Oh yeah,
- 55:17Speaker 3: from you know, from the offices, and you know, we
- 55:20Speaker 3: we wound up doing all these crazy things.
- 55:22Speaker 1: And so this was based out of light. It was
- 55:24Speaker 1: an internet company and it would make individual sites. But
- 55:26Speaker 1: were you guys licensed by the NFL or it was
- 55:28Speaker 1: all just.
- 55:28Speaker 3: So we were getting licensed by the NFL and by
- 55:30Speaker 3: the Players Association. And you know, this is the time
- 55:33Speaker 3: when when we did the Cowboys, we paid them for
- 55:35Speaker 3: the right to do their website with this idea that
- 55:38Speaker 3: you know, we would go sell you know, merchandise and
- 55:41Speaker 3: ads and content around it. And you know, this is
- 55:43Speaker 3: the height of the dot com boom. So I was
- 55:45Speaker 3: the thirtieth employee in what years, nineteen ninety nine.
- 55:49Speaker 1: I love this dude, all right, And you know.
- 55:52Speaker 3: Three months, you know, four months later, we're in brand
- 55:54Speaker 3: new offices in Santa Monica, were three hundred employees, were
- 55:57Speaker 3: the number two IPO on Wall Street behind Krispy Kreme.
- 56:02Speaker 3: And I think I turned down a job and you
- 56:05Speaker 3: and I have to talk at Fox Sports and they
- 56:07Speaker 3: gave me an extra like fifty thousand shares, and I'm thinking,
- 56:10Speaker 3: this is the greatest thing on earth.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Who's at this crew in broadband?
- 56:13Speaker 3: No so, and it wound up being you know, Mark Silverman,
- 56:16Speaker 3: who now helps run Fox went to the Big ten network.
- 56:19Speaker 3: Was it was one of my bosses, John Collins, who
- 56:22Speaker 3: went on to the NFL and now I think owns
- 56:23Speaker 3: the Islanders, you know was one. You know, you can
- 56:28Speaker 3: kind of go through the list of talent that have
- 56:31Speaker 3: shown up in all kinds of crazy places. I left
- 56:36Speaker 3: three months later, there are three hundred people. Nine months
- 56:38Speaker 3: later they were out of business.
- 56:39Speaker 1: So tell me how it goes down, because everyone knows
- 56:40Speaker 1: pets dot com. But like, literally, how does it bust?
- 56:43Speaker 3: You know? Well, I remember, so we get the AOL
- 56:45Speaker 3: deal and they pull us into this. We had this big,
- 56:48Speaker 3: fancy room called the Athletes Lounge that they had built
- 56:51Speaker 3: that no athletes ever went into. But it was a
- 56:53Speaker 3: really cool spacetic chairs, the table, and they do this
- 56:59Speaker 3: mean They're like, hey, and I had kind of worked
- 57:00Speaker 3: on this secret project on teen pages for a while
- 57:02Speaker 3: and they said, hey, AOL is going to take our content.
- 57:04Speaker 3: I remember walking out next to some guy and I'm like,
- 57:06Speaker 3: I'm twenty two. I was a history major. I'm like,
- 57:08Speaker 3: I don't know anything about business, Like how much is
- 57:10Speaker 3: AOL paying us? Like, no, we're paying them seventeen million
- 57:13Speaker 3: a year for the right to do this, and go
- 57:15Speaker 3: why we're doing all the work doesn't make sense. That
- 57:18Speaker 3: was my first hint that you know, hey, this may
- 57:21Speaker 3: not be you know, the sound is financial model.
- 57:23Speaker 4: So you know, you know, we're right up there.
- 57:25Speaker 3: With pets dot Com and so you know, my my
- 57:28Speaker 3: one hundred thousand shares that I have, you know are
- 57:31Speaker 3: worth as much of you know as those bobbleheads behind you.
- 57:36Speaker 1: All Right, So you're twenty two and then people don't
- 57:38Speaker 1: know that in between that and your time in the NFL,
- 57:41Speaker 1: there was a amazing time in the Arena Football League.
- 57:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I went.
- 57:45Speaker 3: So I wound up leaving Broadband Sports to go to
- 57:48Speaker 3: the Los Angeles Avenders who played the Staples Center. There
- 57:50Speaker 3: an expansion franchise and in case C. Wasserman, who people
- 57:53Speaker 3: know now who owns Wasserman Media and Sports Group, and
- 57:57Speaker 3: it's done greaton.
- 57:57Speaker 4: Is you know, CEO of LA twenty eight and the Olympics.
- 58:00Speaker 3: He started an expansion team in the Arena League with
- 58:03Speaker 3: this idea maybe he could ultimately own the NFL LA team.
- 58:07Speaker 4: Just experience and.
- 58:08Speaker 3: So get recruited to go over there. They're put in
- 58:10Speaker 3: a CBA. We kind of hit it off and go
- 58:13Speaker 3: join the Arena League for four years.
- 58:15Speaker 1: So is the job what was the job with the
- 58:16Speaker 1: Arena League? Basically GM kind of Yeah, twenty three years old.
- 58:21Speaker 4: Twenty three.
- 58:22Speaker 3: And you know what was so cool about the Arena
- 58:24Speaker 3: League is it's the same job as today, just nobody
- 58:27Speaker 3: knew who we were, you know, far less zeros. You know,
- 58:30Speaker 3: you'd go to renegotiate a player contract and you had
- 58:33Speaker 3: to go to their house and you're trying to get
- 58:35Speaker 3: them to go from twenty five thousand to twenty eight,
- 58:39Speaker 3: you know. And you know, I remember this one story
- 58:42Speaker 3: we go to We had a player who played for
- 58:45Speaker 3: US who got an offer from Canada and we were
- 58:48Speaker 3: paying him twenty six thousand. He got an offer from
- 58:50Speaker 3: Canada for thirty thousand, and he's like, well, you got
- 58:52Speaker 3: a match.
- 58:53Speaker 4: I'm like, well, was it an American or Canadian?
- 58:55Speaker 1: I need to know the currency?
- 58:56Speaker 3: And he goes, I don't know, and he goes calls
- 58:58Speaker 3: back and goes Canadian. I go, well, that's less money
- 59:00Speaker 3: than we're offering you. And he goes, well, you still
- 59:02Speaker 3: got to match. You still got to get them to thirty.
- 59:07Speaker 3: But just such a you know, we got that team
- 59:08Speaker 3: off the ground. We went to the playoffs a number
- 59:10Speaker 3: of years. Like such a fun experience to to learn
- 59:14Speaker 3: from the players and the coaches names, all of them
- 59:17Speaker 3: still close with you know a lot of them. We
- 59:19Speaker 3: had Greg Hopkins, who was our big star, who is
- 59:22Speaker 3: from Indiana Firebirds who came to LA who actually they
- 59:26Speaker 3: they wanted to be the Bachelor after the first season
- 59:29Speaker 3: when they were uh so they had Jeremy Bloom is
- 59:34Speaker 3: that right or not him?
- 59:36Speaker 4: Whoever? The Colorado guy was?
- 59:38Speaker 1: Who Jeremy was?
- 59:40Speaker 3: You know it was Ryan and Trista yes, Yan so
- 59:44Speaker 3: so the second one, they're like, great, another football player
- 59:46Speaker 3: Arena football in l A. And uh they couldn't convince
- 59:49Speaker 3: Greg to do it. We had Chris Jackson who's now
- 59:51Speaker 3: the receivers coach at Texas. Steve Sarkis and played in
- 59:54Speaker 3: the NFL for a number of years too, is our
- 59:56Speaker 3: best receiver. Tony Graziani was our quarterback. But when I
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: when I first got there, Todd Marinovitch really was the quarterback.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah, what kind of version Todd Marinovich for you
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: with what you're dealing with?
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: He he was talented.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: Yeah, you know you could see all of it. But
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: then you know, I mean, yes, it ended poorly. Uh
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: but just like you're like Todd Marinovitch, I mean was
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: hanging around, was he not so much?
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: Not so much at that point, you know.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: But uh, and that was right at the start of
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: I think Todd's artists phase. But you know, and then
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: Tony Graziani became our starting quarterback for a number of
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: years and became one of the best quarterbacks in the
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: Arena Football League.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: I feel like in LA there's like cult things, like
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: everyone likes to go see, Like you know, in Silver
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Lake there's a band or there's a comedy troupe that
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: you know, you have to go to Largo to see.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Was this like kind of like Colt cool to like
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: go to the area.
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: It was not Colt cool. We played at Staples Center,
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: all right, you know, and you know it was It
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: was fun, but it was not Colt cool. But one
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: of the cool things about the job was you put
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: T shirts on seats. I got to hire a head
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: coach shit twenty four at Hodgkiss, who's now a really
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: good high school FOOTB coach in.
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: The South Bay.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: I always say, before there was Sean McVay ed Hodgkiss,
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: he was four years old. He was probably in his
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: late twenties, but was the Sean McVay of the Arena League.
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: Before there was Sean McVay. I love this, and he
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: he came and turned around our franchise, a great guy
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: named Brent Winner, who went on to become the head
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: coach of the Boise Burn. Sure, you know, we started
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: two Arena minor league arena football teams in Bakersfield and Fresno.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: I mean, just you kind of go through all of it,
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: but it was it was a joy. But you got
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: to I mean I went to the airport and booked,
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: you know, got plane tickets and boarded planes, did the buses,
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: picked up chipope, play for launch, did did the dry cleaning,
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: you know, but you also got to do the cool stuff,
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: negotiate contract.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: You learn very facett that everyone who does, you know,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: play by play for a minor league team says, yeah,
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: you do literally everything, and then you can go do
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: anything because you've done it. You've done every single part
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: of the organization.
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: I always tell anybody break into sports, go to the
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: minor leagues because you'll get to do everything and you'll
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: learn there's almost not a thing that happens at the
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: Los Angeles Rams right now that I didn't do in
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: my time between the Arena League or Tampa or now
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: at the Rams. So I would say it's the best
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: training ground because rather than going to a big brand
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: where you talk about what someone else did that you
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: that you helped do a small part of you actually
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: got to do the thing, and you can talk about
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: your experience.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Real quick, rapid fire. We'll do just quick questions and
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: then we'll get you out it here. The first one here,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: super Bowl Ride, your most fondest memory, the thing that
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: if you wake up in the middle of the night
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: and you just smile, what was it?
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: Which one? The one we won? The one you won?
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Yeah, you're hosting a Lombardi.
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: Super Bowl Ride.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: Cooper cups catch in Tampa against in Tampa because we're
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: ahead twenty seven three, right, I mean almost you know
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: twenty And I get all these texts. They show the
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: owner suite at halftime and I look nervous, and everybody's like,
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: you're up twenty three, Like you happy? Look that and
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: I'm like, we're playing Tom Brady ye right, like there
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: is no world in which you're ever gonna feel good.
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: We get twenty seven to three and you're like, okay,
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: like we got this, and then they just you know,
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: we Cooper Cup fumbles can't like that never happens. He's winning,
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: and you blow the whole thing and they score and
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: it's twenty seven. All in the places rock and you're like,
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: oh my god, and Matthew Stafford and Cooper Cup connect
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: on a bomb and you know, I think you go
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: to enough games in your life where it sid you
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: can always tell from the arc of a past whether
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: it's gonna be caught, Like you can do the geometry
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: in your hand and you're like, oh my god, like,
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: oh my god. You know, we get it, you know,
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: we get it.
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: You know we we throw the ball down.
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: You're like, we're actually gonna go win this game in regulation,
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: which you thought had no prayer. You kick the field
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: goal and you get in the locker room and just crazy.
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: And one of the cool things about you know, so
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: that play and then Sofi Stadium and knowing because we
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: already knew the Niners and one we were coming back
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: to the new championship game. You may know the Sofi
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: Stadium is basically an led E screen, So on the
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: plane home, you fly right over Sofi Stadium. We had
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: on the roof we ran the loop of the Stafford
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: to Cup pass for our players to see as they
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: flew in. You know, back to LA for you know,
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: kind of the NFC Championship. I know, I remember that,
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: you know, I remember the tip pass that wanted against
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: you know, the the Niners, all all of that. But
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: to to win an NFC Championship against your you know,
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: most bitter rival, and to win a Super Bowl in
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: your own building, it's all it's all there, but the
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: Cooper Cup pass.
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: For sure, you're in LA.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: A lot of celebrity fans come to these games, maybe
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: the most surprising or you know, best celebrity story as
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: coming to so far, whether it be super Bowl week
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: or whether it be any regular season game that you've
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: had a chance to interact with that you're just like,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: what is going on here?
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: You know, super Bowl was crazy and you know that
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: regard and you kind of get used to.
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: I would take a couple weeks.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: Ago, we had show hey o Tani for his first game,
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: and like Thursday night game and you bring him in
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: the locker room and he's hanging with the players, and
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: you know just how wide eyed he was. And this
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: guy is probably the greatest athlete on the planet right now.
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: I mean, it'd be like if Patrick Mahomes and Micah
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: Parsons were the same player, like, I mean, you try
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: to think about that, you know, and you know, so
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: then you you get to, you know, all of the
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: entertainers and the fun and then you know, you also
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: get to, you know, the silly things from our generation
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: when you know, the Sarah Michelle Gellers show up and
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: you're like, you know, you're like, yeah, you're like teenage.
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: Kevin's fired up right now, you know.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: You know, it's like when when Debbie Gibson tweeted at me, yes.
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: You know, but you know what's so funny. I mean
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: you talk about memories.
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: I remember we had Warren g play halftime of a
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: wildcard game against Arizona Stadium's Rocket. This is before the
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: NFL is done. They're crazy halftime show, which was awesome.
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: But you know, you just LA is a special place
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: when you get it rolling, you know, but she's still
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: magic Johnson, Kareem, you know, the athletes still always you know,
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: Lebron they always do well in LA.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Two all right, last one. And it's too pronged. Underappreciated
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: player on the Los Angeles Rams and then underappreciated person
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: in our NFL world that you think is there's some
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: shout out on this.
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: Podcast underappreciated player in the Los Angeles Rams. I'm going
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: to go with two each side of the ball. Rob Havenstein,
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: you know, our right tackle, who has been one of
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: the foundational pieces and he's one of the only guys
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: to have started a Super Bowl with both Jared and
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: Matthew like you just since we drafted him in twenty fifteen.
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: You know the rock and we're so young on the
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: offensive line. You got Alaric Jackson, undrafted, third year Steve Avila,
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: first year Coleman Shelton's third or fourth year, Kevin Dotson's
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: in his fourth year.
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: I mean, Rob Havenstein's like glue young.
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: I mean, I think we're the second You had that
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: great stat about the Packers on Good Morning Football. I
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: think we're the second or third youngest team in football.
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: You know, so Rob Hevenstein is kind of that glue
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: of the offense, you know, certainly the offense line. And
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: then I say on the Ernest Jones, third year linebacker, broke.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: This great super Bowl.
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: That great in the Super Bowl, you know when you
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: talk about someone who handles that. We signed Bobby Wagner,
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: which kind of lessened his role last year. But I
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: think in terms of and this is a great life lesson.
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: I don't want to say for all millennials and gen
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: Z because that's you know, painting with wide brushes. You know,
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: has a sack and a tip pass in the Super
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: Bowl knocks away a four down ball. We bring in
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: Bobby Wagner who takes a back seat, but he learns
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: so much from Bobby Wagner as a mentor, as a leader,
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: and you see that pain dividends that this year. And
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: I think for all of us who get jobs young, Hey,
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: I'm the man. I can do this, like, it's great
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: to have mentors being able to take a step back,
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: take a lesser role, watch someone. I mean you want
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: to You're not going to find a better human being
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: on this earth than Bobby Wagner. I could answer your
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: second question, you know, with with a Bobby you know
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: Wagner shout out. But you know to me, you know,
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: Ernest Jones has been you know, the heartbeat of this
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: defense is our signal caller and the lifeblood and just
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: someone that you love watching grow each day in his
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: third year.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: I love it all right now in our world in
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: the NFL, could be another player, could be another coach,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: could be a league employee, could be an employee at
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: the RAMS, someone that maybe doesn't get enough love and
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: you say, hey, this guy is really good or this
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: gal is really good at what they do.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: Look, I'm not going to say anybody at the RAMS
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: because I'd have to go three hundred deep.
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: You know there. You know I love all my children equally,
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: and you know.
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: So I love all our employees equally. I'm going to
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: go off the raid our NFL league office.
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: Dave Gardy.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: Talk about Guardy.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: You know, one of the bedrock has been there forever.
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: You know, someone who knows the rule book inside out.
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: When you know, when you're angry and pissed off on
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: a Monday and you know you want to complain about
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: it officiating or something that the league did, Dave gets
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: the call from all of us and he handles it
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: with such grace, right, I mean, I can't think of
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: someone who's MFT more on a weekly basis then Dave Guardy,
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: and he just he handles it so well. He represents
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: everything that's great about the NFL. And you've had Mike
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: North on all the time. I mean, the choice words
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: I gave Mike North Sunday from the locker room in
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: San Francisco when they were debating Saturday night or Sunday
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: night for our game. You know, we we We've said,
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: you know, I did a couple of times on this
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: podcast that's nowhere near whether or actually when we got
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: our schedule on May and I'm yelling at Mike North,
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: Dave Guardy gets on a weekly basis from all thirty
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: two of us. You know, he's the person who shows
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: up at game operations. He leads the competition committee, you
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: know meetings. He works closely with Troy Vincent. Just one
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: of those good guys in the NFL who never gets
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: gets any recognition. And you and I talk about this
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: all the time. You know, one of the things that
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: I disliked the most about the NFL is that you know,
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: one man's downfalls another man's opportunity. And I think that
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: makes us you know a lot caddye And you know,
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: always looking, you know what team who's getting fired?
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: And does that mean there's an opportunity?
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: Have you always say? Are they can in their coach? Okay?
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: Well if so?
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: You know, we need to be better cheerleaders of each other,
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: you know, at all thirty two franchises and you know,
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: the league office and when when I say something like that,
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: like they you know, there's so many good people on
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: other teams who deserve shout outs, but Dave Guardy is
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: the first one that comes to mind for me.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: I love that. Let's wrap with this. I always do
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: this on the podcast. You have an elevator ride at
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: the Combine or the Senior Bowl, or you name it,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: the league meetings in West Palm or Arizona, and a
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: young man or woman comes in with a resume and
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: a Manila folder and they're a junior in college, or
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: they're a sophomore in law school, or they're just off
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: the street and they learn that there's a big NFL
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: event and this is their opportunity. And you get in
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: this elevator and the elevator closes, and the young man
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: or woman looks at you and says, I'll do anything
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: to get in the NFL. What is your advice? And
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: you have just the elevator elevator ride to share with them.
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: What is your elevator advice for this young man or woman?
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: My advice is always the same, you know, major in
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: whatever you want, because it doesn't matter right you don't
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: have to be a sports management sports business major. If
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: you you want to major in Greek philosophy, be my guest, like,
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: go be the best version. The first version people see
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: of you all the time is email. Make sure your
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: email is well written, clear, concise. That's how ninety five
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: percent of the world's going to judge you when you're
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: a first and it's.
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: Not like pullo sport girl eleven or it's yeah, you know,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: and you know, make sure that at gmail dot com.
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: You know, go volunteer at your university in the football office,
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: at the athletic department. Don't just tell me you'll do anything.
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: Show me that you've gone work. And I don't care
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: if you go work, you know, selling tickets for sure,
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: you know women's soccer, or if you're the right hand
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: to the head football coach, that doesn't matter to me.
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: I want to see you do that so I can
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: go talk to someone about your work, ethic and your drive.
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: And then finally, if you truly love the NFL, there's
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: so many great ways, whether it's over the cap or
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: PFF for all these sites. Now you can go learn
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: some of that trade, and you know you can.
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: Go do it.
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: Start a blog, start a podcast. Like there's so many
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: ways when you and I were coming up that you.
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: Couldn't do this. And I don't say that.
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: I'm not going to read your stuff and say like, oh,
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: you have this amazing insight about the offensive line and
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: we're going to go hire you. I just want to
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: know how you think. I want to see that you
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: can put it all together, you know, and have that initiative,
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: and look, be be bold, be creative, and look, if
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: you decide I want to go work, you know, at
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: a factory or at a tech company or Wall Street,
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: it doesn't.
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: Mean it's twenty two.
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: Your path is, you know, if you don't get in football,
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: if you don't go to sports, its not driven. Go
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: do what you're passionate about. You will find your way
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: to where you should be. Like, be patient, you know,
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: be optimistic, and you know, don't just take any job,
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: take the one you really want.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: Kevin, this is awesome, President of the Los Angeles Rams,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: on the biggest week of the RAMS season and certainly
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: the most dramatic Wildcard game in a few days. I
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: so appreciate you taking the hour and change to sit
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: with me. You're great at what you do and obviously.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: We so appreciate your time. Dude.
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: It's if we had been talking in May and you
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: would say the rams for ten and seven in the
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: wildcard hunt, I would have said, you're damn right, we are.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: So yeah, Yeah, I liked it.
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: Let's go have some fun this weekend. Thanks Peter, have.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Fun, dude, Thank you.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: Look, I talked to them off pretty often because he's
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: got big picture stuff and it's not so much aaron
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: about like, you know, here is the scoop on you know,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: this guy's ankle injury. We don't talk. We talk big
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: picture stuff. You could tell that guy's a leader and
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: you know, pretty impressive in his own right.
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and I mean he like he was saying that
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: the amount of people who have come through that door
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: that he has worked with and to be there for
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: multiple regimes and like the different the connections to different
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: coaches as well as different quarterbacks. Loved hearing that, especially
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: going into this weekend.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: My big takeaway is it's it's the frustration that those
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: who know have over the Raheem Morris situation is real
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: and it comes from Kevin. I speak to Kyle Shanahan
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: about it. It comes to guys like Lafleur, all of
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: these guys who have worked with Rahiema like that's the
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: that's the voice of the locker room, that's the voice
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: who gets the players. And yet year after a year
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: comes by and he's not getting a head coaching job.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: We'll see how it goes. As we're recording this, there's
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: the several vacancies, and yet I have no assurance that
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: Rahee Morris is getting one of these jobs this year. Either.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: It's impressive to have a front office like actively be
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: like we this, we love this guy, we want that's
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: a secure organization, so we want him to get his
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: shot at being a head coach.
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that is wild. That is a secure organization. Other
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: organizations would guard these guys like their gold. With the Rams,
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: it's like we've had thirty different guys come and go like, well,
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: we're happy for all of them. The tree is what's important.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: Everyone go branch out.
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: I think he used the phrase we were trying to
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: sell him or sell the like other teams on him,
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: as opposed to like we're denying interviews. It's like no,
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: they yeah, they're fighting for him, which is great. You
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: love to see that from an organization.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: You love to see it, all right, So that's Rams
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: versus Lions Sunday night. I can't wait for it. Let's
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: do the Uber Eats Delivering Results, Aaron, how's that sound?
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: Last week was Week eighteen. We got to give it
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: to somebody, and the person I'm going to give it
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: to is actually a Los Angeles ram. I'm going to
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: give it to Pooka Nakula. Pooka Nakula broke the single
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: season record, which is pretty impressive for not only hatches
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: for a rookie, but for yards for a rookie in
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: a season. He did it with Carson Wentz throwing him dimes.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: Shout out to Pooka Nakua breaks the record, gives the
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: ball to his mother, their smiles all abound. We'll see
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: what he could do this weekend. But when you break
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: two two long standing NFL records like catches for a
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: rookie in a season and receiving yards in a rookie season,
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: and oh yeah, you're the twentieth wide receiver selected in
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: the draft and you're a fifth round pick, you get
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: my love. I'm gonna say, Pooka Nakua gets the Uber
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: Delivering Results. Uber Eats Delivering results where you can get
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: almost almost anything from Uber eats. On that note, there's
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: a plenty of games this weekend Rams Lions is the
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: one I've got circled. I hope you guys enjoyed listening
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: to this. Such a good insight in hiring coaches. McVeigh,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: Stafford Golf, Aaron Wan, Kaufman, Jason English, all the boys
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: and gals on the West Coast, and especially you guys,
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: the listeners. Thanks for listening. I feel like we're doing
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: some pretty cool stuff over here. They'll be not as
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: viral as some other podcasts at the moment. If Kat
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Williams wants to come on, feel free, If Aaron Rodgers
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: wants to voice his thoughts on some topics, feel free.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: We're here. We're just doing our job the best way
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: we can. Thanks for listening. We'll talk to you guys
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: next week. The Season with Peter Schrager is a production
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: of the NFL and partnership with iHeartRadio. For more podcasts
