- 2:04Speaker 1: thunderous applause.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It'll sound like you walked into a stadium.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Yeah, Dan, can you add thunderous applause? Thank you all
- 2:11Speaker 1: right here, Sarah chalk Hi, Sarah.
- 2:13Speaker 4: I even didn't know where to talk because I didn't
- 2:15Speaker 4: hear the thunder supplies. I thought maybe I was just
- 2:17Speaker 4: getting a glitch in these fancy headphones. Can I see
- 2:21Speaker 4: you guys? Like, right now, I'm staring at the garage
- 2:23Speaker 4: band screen? Can I make it small so I can
- 2:25Speaker 4: see you guys.
- 2:26Speaker 2: You got to do is click back on zoom.
- 2:28Speaker 4: So so Dan, can I make Can I hit the
- 2:30Speaker 4: yellow button and make garage bands small?
- 2:32Speaker 2: I'm just gonna put it out there. You ruined our introduction.
- 2:35Speaker 1: No, I don't want to edit it out. Dan, listen. No,
- 2:42Speaker 1: now that Sarah's ruined the magic, I want the fans
- 2:45Speaker 1: to know that we've been on We've been on zoom
- 2:47Speaker 1: for a half hour. While Sarah was getting technical supported.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Sarah literally had Sarah had a technical intervention with our editor.
- 2:56Speaker 1: She was like, how do you start your laptop?
- 2:59Speaker 4: And yet I've still I felt I've never felt more
- 3:01Speaker 4: proud are you than I do in this moment, because okay,
- 3:04Speaker 4: I just want to successfully. Jean Michelle is gonna edit
- 3:06Speaker 4: this out. Just give me one second. I'm gonna hit
- 3:08Speaker 4: the yellow button in the corner, Dan and minimize garage
- 3:11Speaker 4: band so I can see Zach and Donald.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I do it.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Just do it. You don't even have to ask.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I'm worried that Sarah's gonna call Dan for other technical
- 3:18Speaker 1: help in her life. She's gonna be like, hey Dan,
- 3:20Speaker 1: I'm wi FI signal.
- 3:26Speaker 4: I have dan Zy mail.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Special.
- 3:31Speaker 2: How are you, Sarah?
- 3:33Speaker 4: I'm good, guys. I miss you. I miss you, and
- 3:35Speaker 4: now seeing you on this zoom is making me miss
- 3:37Speaker 4: you more weird.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Where are you quarantining in Canada? I imagine, so I'm quarantining.
- 3:43Speaker 4: I'm quarantining Canada. My sister and I have decided to
- 3:46Speaker 4: quarantine our families together, so we have communally six children,
- 3:51Speaker 4: three dogs, and a cat. Wow.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Wow, How are you doing school? How's school going?
- 3:56Speaker 4: School is interesting? School is basic. We have children between
- 4:01Speaker 4: the ages of three and sixteen, so we'd only have
- 4:05Speaker 4: so many screens and so much bandwidth to attend different
- 4:08Speaker 4: online classes. So we've been kind of doing some of
- 4:10Speaker 4: that and then some group classes. My sister is a lawyer,
- 4:14Speaker 4: so she's teaching law, so like really right things like
- 4:17Speaker 4: you know, lessons on the Rights of the Child, the
- 4:20Speaker 4: United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Next
- 4:22Speaker 4: week's the Constitution, and I do equally important things like
- 4:25Speaker 4: give them cartoons sides and they audition for cartoons.
- 4:29Speaker 1: That's you could give them a scene from Rick and
- 4:33Speaker 1: Morty and you guys could all play parts.
- 4:35Speaker 4: We have actually we've done we've done some cartoons. We
- 4:39Speaker 4: haven't reached Rick and Morty yet because that's not appropriate
- 4:41Speaker 4: for the four year old, right and as it's sort
- 4:45Speaker 4: of you know, tight quarters, we haven't gotten there yet.
- 4:48Speaker 4: But yeah, it's it's pretty nuts. I mean, we're all
- 4:51Speaker 4: quarantined together. I'm the designated grocery shopper, probably because of
- 4:54Speaker 4: all my OCD tendencies. So I feel like that's the
- 4:59Speaker 4: most harrowing experience in my life right now, which is, uh,
- 5:04Speaker 4: you know, I go to the grocery store. I have
- 5:06Speaker 4: my own you know, version of Ppe, which is like
- 5:09Speaker 4: rating the drama eight prop spin. So I have like
- 5:12Speaker 4: a tuk and sunglasses and I, you know, just put
- 5:15Speaker 4: my hoodie up and gloves on.
- 5:19Speaker 1: For you Canadians, is a hat?
- 5:21Speaker 4: It's a hat.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yes, I'm I'm gonna say what.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Is the Sarah? If you wouldn't mind translating your canadianisms
- 5:29Speaker 1: as we go through the podcast. There are some non
- 5:32Speaker 1: Canadians listening listen.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Yes, the main the main ones really are to Garbrator,
- 5:38Speaker 4: Parkade and Seawalls.
- 5:41Speaker 1: What's a Garbarerator? Oh, the garbage disposal.
- 5:43Speaker 4: The garbage disposal got it, yeah, which happened to be
- 5:46Speaker 4: the first thing that broke when I went when I
- 5:47Speaker 4: came to Los Angeles and the landlord did not understand me.
- 5:50Speaker 1: At a park is a parkade a parking parking structure.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Your Canadians is doing very well. You've been studying.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I'm just guessing. I'm playing a game called guest the
- 6:00Speaker 1: Canadian expression. Are there any other.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Parcade? Seawall?
- 6:07Speaker 1: What's a seawall? The obvious? And then you have that
- 6:13Speaker 1: thing with the gravy and fries. What's that called? But
- 6:16Speaker 1: that's maybe the temine Okay, I know about poutine.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Yeah, it's the gravy and the cheese curds on top
- 6:24Speaker 4: of the of the fries.
- 6:25Speaker 1: It's just fries, but they take great pride in it
- 6:28Speaker 1: in Canada.
- 6:30Speaker 4: How is your guys quarantine going?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Oh it's amazing that Sorry, how much time do you spend?
- 6:39Speaker 1: Donald out in that closet. Donald tells his family that
- 6:44Speaker 1: he's recording the podcast. Donald's family thinks he records the
- 6:47Speaker 1: podcast every day and he's in the closet, But meanwhile,
- 6:50Speaker 1: we do it a week.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:51Speaker 3: My wife keeps asking, like yo, how come when is
- 6:54Speaker 3: the next episode coming out?
- 6:55Speaker 2: You record so many of.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Them, You're banking soon.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Things that Donald records, like four podcasts a day in there.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Well, I definitely do a lot of press. I'll be like,
- 7:06Speaker 2: I'm doing so much press right now.
- 7:08Speaker 1: You should set up you should set up your your
- 7:10Speaker 1: your PlayStation in there. Donald.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I just don't know how I get the TV in here.
- 7:13Speaker 2: That's the problem.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Dan danos, Dan Danos, he knows Dan could hook it up.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Dann do it Dan really quickly. It says, Zoom would
- 7:22Speaker 4: like to record the computer screen. Grant access to this
- 7:25Speaker 4: application in security privacy preferences.
- 7:28Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, you don't want to record this, Sarah.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Dan is out. He's not He's not there for your
- 7:34Speaker 1: technical needs.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Okay, so let's get into it.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Let's get in the wait. Before we get into the episode, Sarah,
- 7:40Speaker 1: Donald and I have done this a few episodes now,
- 7:43Speaker 1: and now that we have you, we wanted to ask
- 7:46Speaker 1: you tell us about your casting process because as I remember,
- 7:52Speaker 1: you were coming off of Roseam, you were doing that
- 7:55Speaker 1: particularly unique thing where you had replaced the Becky that
- 7:59Speaker 1: was years before.
- 7:59Speaker 4: It wasn't yeah, it was I was like seventeen eighteen,
- 8:02Speaker 4: nineteen twenty when that happened, so four years before.
- 8:05Speaker 1: And uh And by the way, I was thinking as
- 8:07Speaker 1: as I was preparing for this, because Sarah, I do
- 8:08Speaker 1: a lot of research. I get really into this now.
- 8:10Speaker 1: By the way, I found for you Scrubs fans out
- 8:12Speaker 1: there and for us, I found a website called Scrubs
- 8:15Speaker 1: Wiki wiki where it has like everything you ever want
- 8:18Speaker 1: to know about Scrubs. Like I'm like, literally, whoever made that?
- 8:20Speaker 2: Well, it doesn't have everything.
- 8:21Speaker 1: It doesn't have us, No, it doesn't have us, but
- 8:23Speaker 1: it has a lot of It has a lot of
- 8:25Speaker 1: insightful information.
- 8:26Speaker 3: And I feel like I feel like they should not
- 8:28Speaker 3: go to wiki Scrubs wiki.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Yeah, but it has like it literally has like these
- 8:32Speaker 1: are the fantasies in the episode. These are the girls
- 8:34Speaker 1: name JD was called these are It's like all break
- 8:36Speaker 1: broken down. Someone put a lot of work into it.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Donal give them a shout out.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Shout out to you for putting all that work in,
- 8:42Speaker 3: But we got it from here.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Oh my god, Donald's jealous. All right, listen, Donald, you guys.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Before I was thinking about Sarah and I was saying,
- 8:50Speaker 1: is there another example other than Roseanne where they just
- 8:54Speaker 1: replaced the actress and had them play the same character.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And I she witched Witched, and was he still was
- 9:01Speaker 1: he just a different Darren?
- 9:03Speaker 4: Yeah? I think they just flipped him out, flipped him out.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Tell just briefly about that, because I thought it's a
- 9:08Speaker 1: very unique thing, and you've told me and Donald and
- 9:10Speaker 1: I just wanted if you could just talk about what
- 9:12Speaker 1: that was like really quickly because I think it's so interesting.
- 9:15Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean I was sixteen when I auditioned, and
- 9:19Speaker 4: it was Glenn Quinn, the guy who played my husband Mark.
- 9:23Speaker 4: The audition was with him and he just made out
- 9:25Speaker 4: with seven girls. We were all dressed exactly the same
- 9:28Speaker 4: and matching pink shirts, and the whole scene was this
- 9:30Speaker 4: like makeout scene where he's like baby baby cam here,
- 9:32Speaker 4: and I'm like, get a job at the gas station,
- 9:33Speaker 4: Get a job at the gas station. He's like baby
- 9:35Speaker 4: baby cam here. And it was literally like every other
- 9:38Speaker 4: actress that was auditioning was like twenty two living in
- 9:40Speaker 4: Los Angeles. I flew in, they flew me in for
- 9:43Speaker 4: the night to go and read, and I just remember
- 9:47Speaker 4: I was sixteen, he was twenty four and just thinking
- 9:49Speaker 4: he is so handsome. How am I going to remember
- 9:52Speaker 4: one line? And they said, we'll let you know in
- 9:56Speaker 4: a couple of days. And then they called back and
- 9:57Speaker 4: they were like, Okay, come back tomorrow and read with Roseanne.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Then I did, and then Tom Arnold called me at
- 10:03Speaker 4: home a few days later, and he was trying to
- 10:06Speaker 4: feel out whether I was going to leave the show
- 10:08Speaker 4: to go to college, because I was younger then and
- 10:11Speaker 4: still you know, at an age where I would do that.
- 10:13Speaker 4: And Sarah Gilbert at the time had left to go
- 10:15Speaker 4: to Gaale and she was flying back to do episodes,
- 10:17Speaker 4: and Lacy had left to go to Vassar, and so
- 10:20Speaker 4: I knew right away that that's what he was asked.
- 10:23Speaker 4: I could tell that's what he was getting at.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Oh, you were probably not allowed to do that, right,
- 10:27Speaker 1: So he was sort of tiptoeing around.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Right, baby, don't you call what happened?
- 10:34Speaker 4: Probably yes? So then I said I was like, no, no, college, gross,
- 10:37Speaker 4: absolutely not. And I knew I would go to college,
- 10:39Speaker 4: but it was the rosi Ane was a big opportunity
- 10:40Speaker 4: for me, and I knew that.
- 10:41Speaker 1: You knew you weren't going to lose the job over it.
- 10:43Speaker 4: So you're like college, college, bombit and I I just
- 10:47Speaker 4: did it on the side, and so, uh so I
- 10:50Speaker 4: got the job. But the craziest part of the story
- 10:52Speaker 4: that I actually I hadn't remembered and we were talking
- 10:54Speaker 4: about recently, was they called me and told me I
- 10:57Speaker 4: had the job. And I went to a party that night.
- 10:59Speaker 4: So I'm to this like little high school in Canada
- 11:03Speaker 4: and I get this phone call that I was going
- 11:05Speaker 4: to replace Becky, and I told a couple people and
- 11:08Speaker 4: it spread around our high school pretty fast. It sounded
- 11:10Speaker 4: like a lie. I mean, it doesn't like I'm going
- 11:12Speaker 4: to replace Becky on the Roseanne Show. The Roseann Show
- 11:14Speaker 4: was the number one show at the time. It sounded fake.
- 11:17Speaker 4: And then I get a call the following week and
- 11:20Speaker 4: it was the Roseanne Show saying, we're getting cold feet
- 11:22Speaker 4: about recasting Becky, so we don't know if we're going
- 11:25Speaker 4: to do it. So we're going to hold you for
- 11:27Speaker 4: four months. We're going to give you ten grand to
- 11:29Speaker 4: hold you. So, first of all, I'd never heard of
- 11:31Speaker 4: money like ten thousand dollars. I thought to do nothing
- 11:34Speaker 4: like just to sit here for four months while you
- 11:35Speaker 4: make a decision. And then the other half of me thought,
- 11:38Speaker 4: like my ass is grass at high school, like they're
- 11:42Speaker 4: going to tell me in four months if we're actually
- 11:44Speaker 4: going to do this. So I had to kind of wait.
- 11:46Speaker 1: You should have brought that money, Sa, You should have
- 11:48Speaker 1: brought that money to school and just fanned it out.
- 11:51Speaker 1: They got me a hold wasn't live. For those of
- 11:55Speaker 1: you who don't know, this is called a holding deal.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Right, this is a holding feat.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Excuse me when I fan my face with my holding view.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Totally and then uh, and then I know and by
- 12:10Speaker 4: the time you converted to Canadian dollars, it was obviously
- 12:12Speaker 4: a whole different situation. So so yes, it was a
- 12:15Speaker 4: crazy It was a crazy experience. I was a baby
- 12:18Speaker 4: and I had no idea what I was doing, and
- 12:20Speaker 4: I just watched like Roseanne and Lori Metcalf and Sandra
- 12:23Speaker 4: Bernhardt and Sarah Gilbert and John Goodman and Johnny Glecky
- 12:27Speaker 4: and this ridiculous list of comedians and it was kind
- 12:32Speaker 4: of in awe and a little bit terrified. And then
- 12:37Speaker 4: after two seasons, they you know, gave everybody hugs by
- 12:39Speaker 4: like I'll see you guys after hiatus, which is the
- 12:41Speaker 4: break that you take between seasons. For anyone listening to
- 12:45Speaker 4: that weird term and uh. Then I get a phone
- 12:48Speaker 4: call saying Lisa's coming back to play Becky, and apparently
- 12:52Speaker 4: I said, I want to talk to Roseanne for closure.
- 12:54Speaker 4: I don't remember doing that, and so I did. And
- 13:00Speaker 4: then and then they called me like six episodes into
- 13:04Speaker 4: the following season and said come back this week. Darlene's
- 13:07Speaker 4: getting married in an episode and can you come down
- 13:10Speaker 4: and be Becky? And I was like it went and
- 13:12Speaker 4: he said tomorrow.
- 13:13Speaker 1: So Lacy had just Liasy had just changed her mind
- 13:15Speaker 1: and she left.
- 13:16Speaker 4: They didn't tell me, they just said can you come
- 13:18Speaker 4: back tomorrow? And I said, well, I'm going to college
- 13:21Speaker 4: up here now and I'm doing this movie of the
- 13:26Speaker 4: week where John Ritter, interestingly enough, who played obviously your
- 13:29Speaker 4: dad on Scrubs, I was doing a TV movie with
- 13:33Speaker 4: him up here, and I said, so I can come on.
- 13:35Speaker 4: I can come on Friday night for tape night. So
- 13:37Speaker 4: it was the craziest day. I remember. I wrote an
- 13:39Speaker 4: ocean off fee exam at like six point thirty in
- 13:41Speaker 4: the morning, went straight into the scene with this pregnancy belly.
- 13:43Speaker 4: I just remember ripping the pregnancy belly off on the
- 13:45Speaker 4: way to the airport and got to La and they
- 13:49Speaker 4: had a car waiting for me with hair and makeup
- 13:51Speaker 4: in the car. Oh my, I did my hair and
- 13:53Speaker 4: makeup on the way to the live taping, and the
- 13:55Speaker 4: taping had already started and I hadn't seen anyone since
- 13:57Speaker 4: I'd been fired, and they were like, hold these flowers,
- 14:00Speaker 4: say this, stand here, do this. You got to you know,
- 14:02Speaker 4: the point where Roseann would take questions from the audience
- 14:05Speaker 4: and somebody said, why do you keep switching Becky's back
- 14:07Speaker 4: and forth? And she was like, well, it's going to
- 14:08Speaker 4: be shocky from now on. And that's how I found
- 14:10Speaker 4: out I had the job back for the last year
- 14:12Speaker 4: and a half of the show.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Wow, that's insane. Wow, I really think, Sarah, that is
- 14:16Speaker 1: a that is a story that I never heard of
- 14:19Speaker 1: another actor having. That is just if you're if you're
- 14:22Speaker 1: I mean, when do you ever see or hear something
- 14:26Speaker 1: like that happening to an actor. That's just insane.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Well, we as we all know, Sarah has the craziest
- 14:30Speaker 3: luck in the history of like just everything happens to
- 14:34Speaker 3: say Sarah.
- 14:34Speaker 1: We touched on that a bit in an earlier episode.
- 14:36Speaker 1: How you would come in on Monday morning and you
- 14:39Speaker 1: would have a story that was like nothing else we
- 14:42Speaker 1: had ever heard, and it happened every week.
- 14:46Speaker 4: Honestly, I still feel like sometimes I need to call
- 14:48Speaker 4: you guys, because I'm like, you, you would not believe
- 14:51Speaker 4: what just happened to me. Lately, it's mostly at the
- 14:53Speaker 4: grocery store. I mostly want to call you after I
- 14:56Speaker 4: leave the grocery store and be like, take a deep
- 14:58Speaker 4: breath and be like, Okay, so I get there, bos
- 15:01Speaker 4: bottomsself and all the produce drops in the main aisle
- 15:04Speaker 4: where everybody's standing. That's a woman behind me, costs little
- 15:07Speaker 4: in front of me. I mean, that is every day, right.
- 15:09Speaker 1: You just couldn't believe that. Every Monday morning. You would
- 15:11Speaker 1: be like, you are not gonna believe what happened to
- 15:14Speaker 1: me this weekend? And then and then we'd be like yeah, right,
- 15:18Speaker 1: And then it would she would go into a story
- 15:20Speaker 1: that was like that's the most insane thing I've ever heard.
- 15:23Speaker 2: That's just this weekend, right, And also it would be
- 15:25Speaker 2: so crazy. I'd be like, there's no way she could
- 15:27Speaker 2: make this shit up, No way she could make.
- 15:30Speaker 4: I mean, it is incredible how similar I am with Elliott.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Okay, well, let's talk about the audition process.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Yeah, talk about that's a good segue into talk about
- 15:42Speaker 1: getting scrubs now, because what was what was the auditioning
- 15:45Speaker 1: process when I read finally came around to getting callbacks,
- 15:48Speaker 1: I was, I was reading with you, so you were
- 15:50Speaker 1: were you the first person cast?
- 15:52Speaker 4: Donald? I were cast together? My audition process, I had
- 15:57Speaker 4: just moved back, like after the Roseansche, I moved back
- 15:59Speaker 4: to Canada for four years, and then my best friend
- 16:02Speaker 4: had finished film school and she wanted to produce and
- 16:06Speaker 4: I wanted to act, and there's you know, there was
- 16:08Speaker 4: just at the time not as much filming in Canada
- 16:10Speaker 4: as does now, and I creatively was like, okay, I'll
- 16:14Speaker 4: go back and give La another try. We had a
- 16:16Speaker 4: we got a six month sublet, and we moved down.
- 16:19Speaker 4: We didn't know anyone, and we never had any plans.
- 16:22Speaker 4: And so this one night we had plans. We were
- 16:24Speaker 4: going to a show and I get this. I had
- 16:26Speaker 4: two auditions in my you know, for the next day.
- 16:29Speaker 4: And normally I'm so type A I would have canceled
- 16:31Speaker 4: my plans and spent every second that existed between getting
- 16:34Speaker 4: the sides until going into the audition working on it.
- 16:38Speaker 4: And I was like, you know what, fuck it I'm
- 16:39Speaker 4: not canceling, you know, on gen We're going to go
- 16:41Speaker 4: to the show. And I got home and it was
- 16:44Speaker 4: midnight and my audition was at nine am, and the
- 16:47Speaker 4: other audition was at noon. My Scrubs audition was at
- 16:49Speaker 4: nine am. And I opened the script and I started
- 16:53Speaker 4: reading it, and I swore every page. I was like fuck,
- 16:55Speaker 4: o shit, oh my god, this is so good. And
- 16:58Speaker 4: every page I was like, oh shit, this is like
- 16:59Speaker 4: the thing I've ever read. Oh fuck, I want this
- 17:01Speaker 4: job so badly. I want this part so bad. And
- 17:03Speaker 4: so by twelve thirty, I like sitting there with having
- 17:08Speaker 4: read the script and with these sides, and I loved
- 17:10Speaker 4: the show. I loved the writing. I love the part
- 17:13Speaker 4: so much. So I thought, okay, I'll skip the other audition.
- 17:16Speaker 4: I won't read that one. Whatever that is goes in
- 17:17Speaker 4: the garbage. And I read with Debbie and Brett, the
- 17:21Speaker 4: cash In directors, at nine o'clock on a Friday morning,
- 17:24Speaker 4: and they said, okay, can you come back at three
- 17:25Speaker 4: to read with Bill.
- 17:27Speaker 1: That's a good sign.
- 17:29Speaker 4: And then one of Jen's and my very very good
- 17:33Speaker 4: friends husbands was in town for work and he had
- 17:37Speaker 4: come over to visit us, and so him and Jen
- 17:41Speaker 4: Aaron Brindle and Jen read the sides with me, and
- 17:45Speaker 4: so we just kept like running them and then I
- 17:48Speaker 4: went in and auditioned with Bill at three auditions were
- 17:52Speaker 4: like ten days later because they were still casting other
- 17:54Speaker 4: people to go to studio and network. So then we
- 17:57Speaker 4: did studio and then network. So there's four auditions and
- 18:00Speaker 4: I were the same thing.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Every too, see Sarah, because the last two auditions we
- 18:06Speaker 2: were there together. I remember that.
- 18:08Speaker 3: And you wore the same jeans with the big ass
- 18:10Speaker 3: belt and it had a big belt buckle.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Am I right, Okay, I know the belt you're talking about. Yeah,
- 18:18Speaker 4: I went through a very big belt buckle collecting face.
- 18:21Speaker 4: So I had this old vintage leather belt and then
- 18:23Speaker 4: I would switch out like like an old Coca Cola
- 18:26Speaker 4: belt buckle or like. So I did wear not a lot,
- 18:28Speaker 4: but in my memory, I don't know, we could both.
- 18:31Speaker 4: I have no idea which one of us is right.
- 18:32Speaker 4: But in my memory, what I wore was I wore
- 18:35Speaker 4: black boots at the heel, black pants and a tight
- 18:38Speaker 4: black tank top. Because when I first moved to LA
- 18:43Speaker 4: and I would go on these auditions, I remember I
- 18:44Speaker 4: went out for an Aaron spelling wearing these like plaid
- 18:47Speaker 4: funky bell bottoms that I thought we was really cool
- 18:49Speaker 4: in this like vintage T shirt. And I thought that
- 18:51Speaker 4: I like super excited about this out. And I walked
- 18:53Speaker 4: in and there were ten girls and they were all
- 18:56Speaker 4: wearing tight black tank tops and tight black pants, and
- 18:59Speaker 4: I thought, Okay, so that's how you do it here,
- 19:02Speaker 4: got it.
- 19:03Speaker 3: I remember the jenes being blue. I do remember them
- 19:05Speaker 3: being I thought they were tight as fuck too. I
- 19:08Speaker 3: remember being like, yeah, Jesus tight.
- 19:12Speaker 2: I was the same.
- 19:13Speaker 1: I was the same way, not with the tight jeans,
- 19:15Speaker 1: but I the second I started getting callbacks, I was like,
- 19:18Speaker 1: I'm not washing this. I want my pheromones. I want
- 19:22Speaker 1: my pheromones on it. I'm not jinxing this thing. And
- 19:25Speaker 1: I would get like another callback and be like not
- 19:27Speaker 1: changing not I mean, I was just so towards the end,
- 19:31Speaker 1: I remember I was like doing the same thing I
- 19:33Speaker 1: did that when I would get up, I would sit
- 19:35Speaker 1: in the chair, have a coffee. I would go to
- 19:36Speaker 1: the treadmill do thirty minute. Like I had a whole regiment.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I would listen to the same few songs before I
- 19:41Speaker 1: went to the audition. I like had a ritual. Do
- 19:43Speaker 1: you remember what they were?
- 19:44Speaker 4: Ah, definitely Madonna.
- 19:47Speaker 1: One of mine was changed by Blind Melon.
- 19:50Speaker 4: Oh I love it does?
- 19:52Speaker 2: How is a melon? Blind? It doesn't make no sense.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Donald is the name of a very popular band. You
- 19:57Speaker 1: might like their music. Let's circle back to south audition process.
- 20:02Speaker 4: I feel like probably I'm guessing that Babies Got Back
- 20:05Speaker 4: was another one of the songs.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Oh oh wow, that really got you.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Do you want to tell them your Baby Got backstory?
- 20:12Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 20:12Speaker 3: I was very impressed that you knew I didn't know
- 20:14Speaker 3: that song as well as you knew that song.
- 20:16Speaker 4: For grad parent event, we had to do a talent
- 20:19Speaker 4: for the parents. And kids got up and played the
- 20:20Speaker 4: violin and the piano, and ten of my girlfriends and
- 20:22Speaker 4: I got up and danced and we had a whole routine.
- 20:25Speaker 1: The routine did is a bit. It was a bit sexual.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I think that was kind of odd for the talent show.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Now they were seen yourself.
- 20:31Speaker 4: I think all of our parents were probably like I'd
- 20:33Speaker 4: asked them, I should like, what did you think when
- 20:35Speaker 4: your child was up there at grad parent event?
- 20:37Speaker 2: It seems like a very odd How old were you guys?
- 20:40Speaker 4: We were in grade twelve, which is Canadian.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Grade right, so you're about to graduate.
- 20:45Speaker 1: We were in grade twelve, which is Canadian for twelfth
- 20:47Speaker 1: creative yep.
- 20:49Speaker 4: So any who sen of my songs the Holden BC
- 20:53Speaker 4: lot and in the quarantine cleanup, I did find my
- 20:57Speaker 4: sides from the auditor little visitors past. Oh I shaved
- 21:01Speaker 4: both of those. But I remember being in the parking
- 21:04Speaker 4: lot and just like seat back in the car and
- 21:07Speaker 4: lying there, and someone told me to do this. I've
- 21:09Speaker 4: never told any of this, but to visualize yourself walking
- 21:15Speaker 4: into the audition, visualize the whole thing playing out, and
- 21:18Speaker 4: visualize yourself walking out and it going really well. And
- 21:22Speaker 4: so I remember sitting in my car in the NBC
- 21:24Speaker 4: parking lot, closed my eyes, visualizing the whole thing. And
- 21:27Speaker 4: then and then Donald and I were in there together
- 21:30Speaker 4: with some other Turks and some other Elliots and some
- 21:32Speaker 4: other jds, and we basically all took turks going in
- 21:36Speaker 4: and then they came back out. And then you go
- 21:38Speaker 4: back in with this person and read together, and then
- 21:40Speaker 4: they peer you up and you read together, and it
- 21:43Speaker 4: was yeah, pretty in nerve racking.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Let me ask you a question, did you know any
- 21:47Speaker 3: of the young ladies that were auditioning for your role.
- 21:51Speaker 3: I knew both of the guys that were auditioning for Turk.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I knew and I not only did I know them,
- 21:56Speaker 3: I knew them well too, Like I hung out with
- 21:58Speaker 3: one of them and we used to play a lot
- 22:01Speaker 3: of basketball together, and then the other one we did
- 22:03Speaker 3: a bunch of movies together, or we did a movie together.
- 22:06Speaker 3: But I would see him out at the club all
- 22:07Speaker 3: the time.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Was it Denzel?
- 22:09Speaker 2: I wish it was Denzel. I wish I could be
- 22:11Speaker 2: like Denzel. I got it, Yo, d.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Denzel, Denzel, this one's mine.
- 22:18Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Sorry, buddy, You'll bounce back. Don't worry about it.
- 22:21Speaker 4: So was that weird to sit there with kind of
- 22:24Speaker 4: buddies or.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, it was very It was very weird,
- 22:27Speaker 3: and it was. It's also one of those things where
- 22:29Speaker 3: it was like, you know, if one of these guys
- 22:32Speaker 3: get it, I'm gonna freaking I'm gonna lose my shit,
- 22:34Speaker 3: you know what I mean. Like, as much as I
- 22:36Speaker 3: love you guys, and as much as you know I
- 22:39Speaker 3: have root for you guys, I want this so bad.
- 22:42Speaker 3: I want this so bad I could taste it. Both
- 22:44Speaker 3: very successful have gone on to do other things. I
- 22:48Speaker 3: just really wanted Chris Turk bad.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Yeah, well you got it.
- 22:51Speaker 4: I mean, so when you're sitting in that for people
- 22:53Speaker 4: that are listening, when you're sitting in that position and
- 22:54Speaker 4: you're going to sit, you're going to network. You don't
- 22:56Speaker 4: have the part yet, and you sign a six year contract,
- 23:00Speaker 4: they call it five plus one, and I was like, well,
- 23:02Speaker 4: but isn't that six years?
- 23:05Speaker 1: That's a contract lingo for don't tell them a six years.
- 23:08Speaker 1: We're going to call it five plus one.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Yeah, five plus one. So you signed five plus one,
- 23:12Speaker 4: and I feel like that's always such a feeling of
- 23:16Speaker 4: I mean, you're twenty four and you're thinking, wow, until
- 23:18Speaker 4: I'm thirty, and in any other scenario that would kind
- 23:21Speaker 4: of take your breath away. In this case, I was
- 23:22Speaker 4: just like, yes, for the love of God, please a
- 23:25Speaker 4: hundred years of doing this, Like there was no two
- 23:28Speaker 4: seconds of thinking about it. Was like, I'm desperate and wow,
- 23:32Speaker 4: if it could ever go, I would be grateful for
- 23:35Speaker 4: as many years as it would go for. And that
- 23:37Speaker 4: feeling of just complete signing that and so hopefully that
- 23:41Speaker 4: don't happen anyways. Then Bill called me the few yards
- 23:45Speaker 4: lay that date or it was the next day. It
- 23:46Speaker 4: was very soon after the audition was either later that
- 23:48Speaker 4: day or the next day, and I couldn't believe it.
- 23:51Speaker 4: I think we all probably after reading that script kind
- 23:53Speaker 4: of felt like it was really something special and had
- 23:57Speaker 4: the possibility of I mean, you obviously you never know,
- 24:00Speaker 4: but the chance to go for it writ so good.
- 24:04Speaker 3: As you know, Sarah, I did not read the script
- 24:06Speaker 3: before we shot the pilot. I didn't read the script
- 24:08Speaker 3: until the table read and I was like, Oh, that's
- 24:10Speaker 3: what happens.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Read dude.
- 24:14Speaker 3: I didn't know it was a freaking dope pilot until
- 24:16Speaker 3: my agent was like, Dude, this is like a really
- 24:18Speaker 3: big pilot.
- 24:19Speaker 1: I never I never knew the trivia that you didn't
- 24:22Speaker 1: read the script till the table read.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Dude, I did not know that.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Remember the Titans. I didn't know what happened in the
- 24:27Speaker 3: script until the table read. I remember we did the dude.
- 24:31Speaker 3: I just know, listen, I just knew only my stuff.
- 24:34Speaker 3: This was I was a kid, I was young.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Listen. There would be times when we'd be shooting scrubs
- 24:38Speaker 1: where you know, the whole script wasn't out yet, and
- 24:41Speaker 1: you know, because the writers were behind, so we would
- 24:43Speaker 1: we'd get scenes, but Bill would sort of explain what
- 24:45Speaker 1: was going on, and you know, you shoot out of order.
- 24:47Speaker 1: So we'd be like Monday morning, you know, time to rehearse,
- 24:50Speaker 1: and Donald and I are like standing on a table,
- 24:52Speaker 1: and he'd whisper in my amy, like, yo, yo, why
- 24:54Speaker 1: are we standing on a table? I had no idea
- 25:01Speaker 1: what was happening in the script? All right, we're going
- 25:02Speaker 1: to take a quick break. We'll be right back with
- 25:05Speaker 1: the legendary Sarah Chalker.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And we're back, and.
- 25:15Speaker 1: We're back, Sarah tell us about.
- 25:17Speaker 4: He just really quickly, really quickly. Before I tell you,
- 25:19Speaker 4: I need to tell you. My favorite example of Donald
- 25:22Speaker 4: not having read the scene was during the auditions in
- 25:27Speaker 4: the show, when you're like, I can't remember what sees,
- 25:30Speaker 4: but we're supposed to be auditioning and Neil and Sam
- 25:34Speaker 4: Lloyd are auditioning you and like I remember you walked
- 25:39Speaker 4: in and you, you know, were like, oh, yeah, I
- 25:41Speaker 4: think I could you read the actual script? You're like,
- 25:43Speaker 4: I think I can, you know, come up with a
- 25:45Speaker 4: dance for that? And you had to come up with
- 25:46Speaker 4: a dance and you just came up with on the spot,
- 25:48Speaker 4: and you're such a fucking good dancer. You came up
- 25:50Speaker 4: with this unbelievable dance to poison and then like, my
- 25:54Speaker 4: kids are all obsessed with the fact that it's the
- 25:56Speaker 4: Fortnite dance now and they watch the Fortnite character do it.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Besides you feel and they've all tried to learn it.
- 26:02Speaker 4: We've tried to learn it. I can't learn it.
- 26:04Speaker 2: I don't think I could even do it again. Listen.
- 26:07Speaker 1: So I just want to say the billion off what
- 26:09Speaker 1: Sarah said. That's a perfect example. Sorry, Sarah, that is
- 26:11Speaker 1: the best example. Donald hadn't read the script, and everyone
- 26:14Speaker 1: loves that dance. People talk about it. It's the Fortnite
- 26:16Speaker 1: dances everywhere. Donald literally showed up and was like, you
- 26:19Speaker 1: want me to do what now? And he had to
- 26:21Speaker 1: and he totally improvised that dance on the spot.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Well, there was a lot of years of of you know,
- 26:26Speaker 3: I was a huge New Audition fan, a huge Bell
- 26:29Speaker 3: Bibdavo fan. I still am a huge New Edition in
- 26:32Speaker 3: Bell Bibdavo fan and Bobby Brown and Ralph chans Van,
- 26:36Speaker 3: all of them. Anyway, I had been dancing like that
- 26:39Speaker 3: my whole life, pretty much since I was like and
- 26:42Speaker 3: since ninety two, I was doing dances like that and
- 26:45Speaker 3: so when they were like, we want you to dance
- 26:47Speaker 3: to poison, in my mind I was like, yeah, I know,
- 26:50Speaker 3: I know some steps that I could do to that
- 26:52Speaker 3: to everybody else, because I remember I was late that day.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Everybody packed the room that day, and I know the
- 26:58Speaker 3: pressure was on me, but I was like, this is
- 27:00Speaker 3: this is something that I do all the time.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Now.
- 27:02Speaker 3: There are other times where I didn't prepare when we
- 27:06Speaker 3: were doing the show, and it cost us like hours
- 27:08Speaker 3: of filming.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Oh my god, Donald, I remember I was.
- 27:11Speaker 2: I was.
- 27:12Speaker 1: I was directing once and Donald had a paragraph of
- 27:15Speaker 1: medical jargon, like a really hard a paragraph you would
- 27:18Speaker 1: anyone would have to practice a lot because it was
- 27:21Speaker 1: like fast medical jargon and like five sentences, and I
- 27:25Speaker 1: was directing and just Donald could not get it because
- 27:28Speaker 1: he hadn't even looked at it. It's not something you
- 27:29Speaker 1: could do on the spot. And I remember, you know,
- 27:31Speaker 1: when you're directing a scene, you normally start with the
- 27:34Speaker 1: widest shots and then you start moving into closer and
- 27:36Speaker 1: closer angles. And I was like, Donald, we gotta move on, dude,
- 27:40Speaker 1: don't worry, we'll cut it together. We cut it together.
- 27:42Speaker 1: By the time we got to like an extreme close
- 27:44Speaker 1: up of Donald's face like eyebrowed a chin. He finally
- 27:47Speaker 1: got it. And if you watch that episode, like Donald
- 27:50Speaker 1: does the whole monologue and a shot that's like this
- 27:52Speaker 1: tight because that was finally the only time you ever
- 27:55Speaker 1: got it.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Those days are over, by the way.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Just anybody who's looking to hire me for any thing, Yeah,
- 28:00Speaker 3: I am not like that anymore.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I'm sure no no casting directors or directors are listening
- 28:06Speaker 1: to our podcast.
- 28:08Speaker 4: But and what Zach was saying about, you know, getting
- 28:11Speaker 4: the script sometimes, you know, as the season would get
- 28:14Speaker 4: towards the end, and the writers were so taxed trying
- 28:17Speaker 4: to crank out these scripts that were so funny. I
- 28:21Speaker 4: remember one morning we got to work on a Monday
- 28:24Speaker 4: morning and it was the week that my character had
- 28:26Speaker 4: the voiceover because each of our characters had a voiceover
- 28:29Speaker 4: for one time, and they didn't have the script out yet.
- 28:32Speaker 4: But we had to start shooting something, and so they said,
- 28:35Speaker 4: We're just going to do a long, kind of steady
- 28:38Speaker 4: cam shot following you through the hallways, and I just
- 28:41Speaker 4: want you to change your face around to go with
- 28:43Speaker 4: different emotions and things you're going to write. So just
- 28:46Speaker 4: you know, you're walking and you're thinking, like a little
- 28:48Speaker 4: bit happy and you're a little bit sad, and then
- 28:50Speaker 4: you're thinking about something. We talk for two hours, just
- 28:54Speaker 4: me and his steady cam.
- 28:55Speaker 1: I'm like, that's funny that they probably had to eventually
- 28:58Speaker 1: write to your expressions because they were changing, because then
- 29:00Speaker 1: they didn't and the camera didn't want to cut away.
- 29:02Speaker 1: So it's like, okay, wait, she's about it. Got a
- 29:04Speaker 1: second of seriousness and then a smile, so like we
- 29:07Speaker 1: need a one second sentence and then it's something to
- 29:10Speaker 1: smile about.
- 29:11Speaker 4: Then looking a little nostalgic and.
- 29:15Speaker 1: All right, should we go into this episode? This is
- 29:17Speaker 1: one of my favorite episodes. This is one of my
- 29:18Speaker 1: favorite episodes of the whole nine years. It really is special,
- 29:23Speaker 1: and I want you to know I haven't seen it
- 29:25Speaker 1: in twenty years and I got goosebumps multiple times watching it.
- 29:28Speaker 1: That's how it really does hold up.
- 29:30Speaker 3: I was about, there's some really great moments in this show,
- 29:34Speaker 3: in particular with you, Sarah. This this You know, I
- 29:37Speaker 3: looked at this show when I first when we first
- 29:39Speaker 3: did this show, I was like, oh wow, we all
- 29:41Speaker 3: get a chance to shine here.
- 29:43Speaker 2: But this was a moment I feel like for you
- 29:46Speaker 2: and for Judy as well.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Where you guys, You guys really crushed this episode, Like
- 29:50Speaker 3: it's really fucking good, like you two alone, you alone,
- 29:54Speaker 3: you and Judy alone. Like really, I don't know what
- 29:57Speaker 3: it is, but you guys start off on a you know,
- 30:00Speaker 3: as adversaries and by the end of it your friends.
- 30:02Speaker 2: And that's for a half an hour.
- 30:04Speaker 3: To be able to tell a story like that's very
- 30:06Speaker 3: difficult to start two people off as enemies, especially when
- 30:10Speaker 3: the narrative so far in the show.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Has been you guys not getting along.
- 30:14Speaker 3: And so you know, it really is a testament to
- 30:17Speaker 3: how good you are as an actress that you guys
- 30:20Speaker 3: were able to not only bring the funny, but bring
- 30:23Speaker 3: the drama and then also bring the connection so that
- 30:26Speaker 3: the story tracks all the way through. And I just
- 30:28Speaker 3: wanted to give you props on that straight up, right out,
- 30:31Speaker 3: you know the bat. And also it was so early
- 30:33Speaker 3: on in the show too, it was episode four, and
- 30:36Speaker 3: so for us to be able to jump in and
- 30:39Speaker 3: tell such a good story, it's really a testament to
- 30:42Speaker 3: how good First of all, Matt tarsis, holy shit, what
- 30:44Speaker 3: a good writer.
- 30:45Speaker 1: D Matt Tarsus wrote it. And we should also say
- 30:47Speaker 1: that this was the first episode not directed by Adam Bernstein,
- 30:50Speaker 1: and it was the first episode directed by Mark Buckland,
- 30:53Speaker 1: who really added a lot of cool style. You know,
- 30:56Speaker 1: we've spoken about how Adam Bernstein really developed the language
- 30:59Speaker 1: of how the camera moves and scrubs and how you
- 31:01Speaker 1: could do some trick shots and how there was a
- 31:03Speaker 1: lot of creativity. The camera was a character in the show,
- 31:06Speaker 1: and Mark Bucklan, I think, with this episode, really took
- 31:08Speaker 1: that and ran with it and added a lot of
- 31:11Speaker 1: a new language to the way the show was shot.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Adam Bernstein, it should be said, directed the Baby's Got
- 31:16Speaker 4: Back video in case anyone out there does not know that, Yes.
- 31:19Speaker 1: That that is beautiful trivia there for you Scrubs fans.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Sarah can do the full dance and knows all the
- 31:24Speaker 1: lyrics the Babies Got Back And coincidentally, was it Sir
- 31:27Speaker 1: Mix a Lot? Yes, it is Sir Mix a Lot
- 31:29Speaker 1: music video was directed by Adam Bernstein. There you go.
- 31:32Speaker 1: That's not on your Scrubs wiki.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Right, Thank you told you wiki wiki. We got it
- 31:36Speaker 2: from here.
- 31:37Speaker 4: Well, first of all, Donald, thank you for saying all
- 31:39Speaker 4: those nice things. I felt the same way about you guys,
- 31:41Speaker 4: Like I was like going like, Wow, Donald Zach fucking
- 31:44Speaker 4: nailing this episode, and it's like we just started, like
- 31:46Speaker 4: we were a few weeks in. It was that fourth episode,
- 31:47Speaker 4: but it was the third one that we'd shot in
- 31:49Speaker 4: that chunk, you know, separated out from the pilot. And like,
- 31:53Speaker 4: I feel like Bill had told us a long time
- 31:55Speaker 4: ago that he didn't he say to the network, We're
- 32:01Speaker 4: going to set it up one out of every three
- 32:03Speaker 4: patients die here and you're kind of waiting the whole
- 32:05Speaker 4: episode to find out who it's going to be, and
- 32:06Speaker 4: then they all die. I feel like he said that
- 32:08Speaker 4: to the network and they said, no, you can only
- 32:09Speaker 4: have one patient die, and he said, no, it's going
- 32:11Speaker 4: to be all three. We have to do that.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Yees.
- 32:13Speaker 4: We're coming out of the gate right now. We're going
- 32:15Speaker 4: to show the audience that this is what the show is.
- 32:17Speaker 4: And all those years on Scrubs, this one, for me
- 32:21Speaker 4: absolutely is the one that stands out whenever I think
- 32:23Speaker 4: of the show as being the one that really shows
- 32:28Speaker 4: the responsibility that's put on these young, young, young doctors.
- 32:31Speaker 4: I mean, my little sister is in her first year
- 32:34Speaker 4: right now of being a real doctor. What a crazy
- 32:37Speaker 4: time in the world to be doing that, and I
- 32:41Speaker 4: can't believe for stories, I can't believe what level of
- 32:44Speaker 4: responsibility that they're given right out of the gate. I mean,
- 32:48Speaker 4: I'll be at work on set and I'm on lunch,
- 32:50Speaker 4: and I come back from lunch and she's like, you know,
- 32:53Speaker 4: she's just been doing CPR on someone for thirty minutes,
- 32:57Speaker 4: trying to save them. And I'm like, well, I was
- 32:58Speaker 4: just in here a makeup touch and they took the
- 33:00Speaker 4: same curl and recurled it again to make it curly
- 33:05Speaker 4: like it just it's such a u it takes your
- 33:09Speaker 4: breath away. Really, what the decisions young doctors have to make?
- 33:12Speaker 1: Do you think your sister was inspired by you? I mean,
- 33:15Speaker 1: it's interesting. You know a lot of younger sisters might
- 33:17Speaker 1: be inspired that their older sister was a real doctor.
- 33:20Speaker 1: But because she grew up with you playing this character,
- 33:23Speaker 1: does she think that that inspired her at all?
- 33:25Speaker 5: Oh?
- 33:25Speaker 4: I tried to get my I remember I'd say to
- 33:27Speaker 4: my family like, hey, guys, like, did you see you
- 33:30Speaker 4: know I was so excited about the show. I've like
- 33:31Speaker 4: you've seen They were like, well, we t vote it
- 33:33Speaker 4: because it's on the same time as twenty four. But
- 33:35Speaker 4: that Jack Bauer, what he did. They I feel like,
- 33:43Speaker 4: you know, she's thirteen years younger than me, and I
- 33:45Speaker 4: would like to think that I had that kind of
- 33:47Speaker 4: an influence, but really she came out of the womb
- 33:51Speaker 4: a doctor. I mean she the stories are crazy me. Yeah,
- 33:54Speaker 4: she she was just so interested in medicine from such
- 33:58Speaker 4: a young age and really so calm under pressure, Like
- 34:01Speaker 4: I remember, it's just responsible. I mean I remember we
- 34:04Speaker 4: went on a road trip and she'd had her license
- 34:06Speaker 4: for maybe two weeks and my dad was like, so
- 34:09Speaker 4: she's gonna drive, right, And I was like, Dad, I've
- 34:10Speaker 4: been I've been driving for thirteen and a half years.
- 34:12Speaker 4: He's like, yeah, yeah, so she's gonna drive right. Like
- 34:15Speaker 4: she just is just a much more responsible human. But
- 34:18Speaker 4: it definitely has been interesting just rewatching a couple, like
- 34:23Speaker 4: just last night, rewatching a couple of the early episodes
- 34:26Speaker 4: and thinking them, thinking about them just in the context
- 34:29Speaker 4: of her and this one in particular, because it's pretty
- 34:34Speaker 4: it's pretty unbelievable, as you know, you see JD and
- 34:37Speaker 4: Elliott and Turk and the pressure that is on them
- 34:40Speaker 4: and just all of it, like trying to figure out,
- 34:43Speaker 4: you know, what calls they can make on their own
- 34:45Speaker 4: and when to go for help.
- 34:46Speaker 3: Here's a little bit more scrubs trivia. Your little sister
- 34:50Speaker 3: taught my eighteen year old, when he was probably nine
- 34:56Speaker 3: to ten months at this time, how to walk right
- 35:01Speaker 3: happen on the third floor of the hospital, right in
- 35:04Speaker 3: between our dressing rooms.
- 35:07Speaker 4: That's so crazy crazy.
- 35:09Speaker 3: And now she's an adult and she's taking care of patients. Wow,
- 35:12Speaker 3: is she on the front line right now?
- 35:14Speaker 4: She is. I think about her mostly every minute.
- 35:18Speaker 6: Wow.
- 35:18Speaker 4: We've been pots and pans every night, all of us.
- 35:23Speaker 4: And my three year old has broken a couple measuring
- 35:26Speaker 4: cups because she gets so into it.
- 35:29Speaker 1: That's very sweet. You do it as like an honor
- 35:31Speaker 1: to the healthcare workers.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's it's really cool. Actually, everybody, everybody goes
- 35:37Speaker 4: out on the on the everybody goes outside at like
- 35:39Speaker 4: seven o'clock and just bangs the pots and pans and
- 35:42Speaker 4: screams and cheers.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Oh.
- 35:44Speaker 1: I like that. I want my neighborhood. I want my
- 35:45Speaker 1: neighborhood to do that. We need a primal scream.
- 35:48Speaker 4: Oh, you start it. It's so cool.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Just segueing back to the show, I want to just
- 35:53Speaker 1: say that you'll hear us at a minute and forty
- 35:55Speaker 1: five seconds, there's this really cool steady cam shot that
- 35:58Speaker 1: really kind of sets up the tone of the show.
- 36:02Speaker 1: You'll hear us talk about the word steady camel lot
- 36:04Speaker 1: on this and if you don't know what it is,
- 36:06Speaker 1: it's a it's like it's a way of mounting the
- 36:08Speaker 1: camera on a on an operator's body so that the
- 36:11Speaker 1: operator can move around and the camera just feels like
- 36:13Speaker 1: it's floating around. And it's something that was used extensively
- 36:16Speaker 1: on the Scrubs set as we traveled on the hallways.
- 36:19Speaker 1: But I pointed out, as I was talking about Mark
- 36:21Speaker 1: Buckle in the director's style, how I like this sort
- 36:23Speaker 1: of way he's introducing that this episode is going to
- 36:25Speaker 1: be about the three of us, where the camera starts
- 36:27Speaker 1: on me and then it and then it goes to
- 36:30Speaker 1: Sarah and it never it never cuts, and then it
- 36:32Speaker 1: goes by the children, and then it comes up to
- 36:34Speaker 1: Donald as he comes into the room. And I just
- 36:37Speaker 1: thought that was kind of an early example of something
- 36:40Speaker 1: that we did ended up doing a lot of of
- 36:42Speaker 1: of sort of moving around the hallways without cutting a lot.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:46Speaker 3: Also, if I don't know if you guys noticed, but
- 36:47Speaker 3: the hospital is really dark in this episode.
- 36:50Speaker 1: Yeah, it's true, the.
- 36:52Speaker 3: Lights aren't on. Really, everything's you know, it's very very
- 36:55Speaker 3: dark in this episode. Not only that, here's another thing.
- 36:58Speaker 3: It's jumping ahead, but this is one of the first
- 37:00Speaker 3: times where Kelso isn't the bad guy on the show. Also,
- 37:05Speaker 3: what I've noticed is that when we're dealing with something
- 37:09Speaker 3: like that's as powerful or as strong as death, it's
- 37:13Speaker 3: us versus the hospital. If you've noticed that, you know
- 37:16Speaker 3: what I mean, it's the cast versus death. And in
- 37:20Speaker 3: this one, Kelso gives is a mentor in this one.
- 37:24Speaker 3: He gives really good advice in this one to JD.
- 37:28Speaker 3: And he's not the obstacle. He's the one that's actually
- 37:31Speaker 3: trying to help solve the problems in this Now, if
- 37:35Speaker 3: you watch other episodes, he's never really like that, you
- 37:39Speaker 3: know what I mean. He's always he's always the bad guy.
- 37:42Speaker 3: This was the first episode, well obviously the first episode
- 37:45Speaker 3: in a run, but this is the first episode that
- 37:46Speaker 3: I can remember where I was like, Wow, Kelso was
- 37:49Speaker 3: on board with us this whole time.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 37:52Speaker 1: I like what you pointed out too about the lighting,
- 37:53Speaker 1: because traditionally in half hour TV comedy, everything's always bright
- 37:57Speaker 1: there's like this unwritten rule that for it to be
- 37:59Speaker 1: funny to be bright and again just challenging some of
- 38:03Speaker 1: the conventions. In this episode, both John Inwood, the cinematographer,
- 38:07Speaker 1: and Mark Buckland did things like have have it be
- 38:11Speaker 1: in dark rooms, you know, having some of the dramatic
- 38:13Speaker 1: moments like in ICU later happened in you know, at
- 38:18Speaker 1: night or at sundown, which I thought, was I agree,
- 38:21Speaker 1: that was something I hadn't I had noticed that was
- 38:23Speaker 1: this is the first time they did that.
- 38:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it carries on throughout the series too.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Yeah. At two twenty six we meet Catherine Juston playing
- 38:31Speaker 1: Missus Tanner. Now she is such an uzz she has
- 38:34Speaker 1: since passed away, but was such an extraordinary actress, and
- 38:36Speaker 1: I remember she had just done a very high profile
- 38:40Speaker 1: run on The West Wing where that character had passed
- 38:43Speaker 1: away as well, and I remember thinking, well, is that
- 38:46Speaker 1: gonna be odd that she's coming onto art. I mean,
- 38:49Speaker 1: I'm glad she's coming on because she's a wonderful actress,
- 38:51Speaker 1: but having just played someone else who died, I think
- 38:54Speaker 1: I just remember that being in my head, like she
- 38:56Speaker 1: had just done such a hope, high profile moment on
- 38:59Speaker 1: West Wing. But then the second I started working with her,
- 39:02Speaker 1: I just felt in awe of her, of her talent,
- 39:06Speaker 1: and that was the furthest thing from my mind.
- 39:08Speaker 4: One of my favorite moments in the episode when she says,
- 39:10Speaker 4: are you a good doctor? And you say it's probably
- 39:12Speaker 4: too soon to tell, and I just feel like it's
- 39:14Speaker 4: such a such an example of how the show walked
- 39:18Speaker 4: that line of like you're just on the edge of
- 39:20Speaker 4: your seat and you're crying and then you're laughing, and
- 39:23Speaker 4: there's a few moments.
- 39:24Speaker 3: Oh, there's a couple of moments that I laughed in
- 39:26Speaker 3: my ass. So when JD goes to the park to
- 39:30Speaker 3: meet up with her, yeah, and he's like, you got
- 39:33Speaker 3: to get your ass back to the hospital. And then
- 39:36Speaker 3: he's like, is that some moores? And then they cut
- 39:38Speaker 3: away and then they cut back and he's still chastising her,
- 39:41Speaker 3: but now he've got chocolate all on his lips.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Yeah. JD was not going to pass up amores moment.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Are you kidding me?
- 39:47Speaker 4: You think he could have gone a big cake?
- 39:50Speaker 1: JD was not. JD was trying. It was a perfect
- 39:53Speaker 1: JD thing to be like really trying to be taken
- 39:55Speaker 1: seriously with s'mores. Chuck late over all of his lips.
- 40:00Speaker 4: One of my favorite laugh out low moments is when
- 40:02Speaker 4: Donald is doing the workout.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Video, which is foreshadowing the Poison Dance a little bit
- 40:10Speaker 1: because you're dancing in the very same room and and a.
- 40:12Speaker 4: Little bit and some and some sweet moves that I
- 40:14Speaker 4: guarantee you we're not in the eighties workout video. But
- 40:18Speaker 4: when he's like, she had such energy and warm, dude.
- 40:20Speaker 4: The Women League of Women Voters called and they want
- 40:22Speaker 4: to know where to zend your membership.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Sarah tell us about I'm a tell us about I'm
- 40:30Speaker 1: a Chunky Monkey from Funky Town because I remember that,
- 40:33Speaker 1: and I just was like, who wrote that? That is
- 40:34Speaker 1: the most random thing in the world.
- 40:36Speaker 4: I guess Matt Tarsus or who knows.
- 40:39Speaker 1: But was the idea that you were just testing out?
- 40:42Speaker 1: Elliott was just testing out that she could say anything
- 40:45Speaker 1: in front of a woman.
- 40:46Speaker 4: Yes, Yes, I think so.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Yes.
- 40:49Speaker 4: Obviously to Carla's.
- 40:51Speaker 3: Display, there's a lot of there's a lot of trivia
- 40:53Speaker 3: in this episode because we we introduced characters that from
- 40:59Speaker 3: that moment on weren't on the show anymore.
- 41:01Speaker 2: Like I remember Layla Lee. She plays the surgeon in
- 41:06Speaker 2: the room with doctor Wynn and Turk.
- 41:08Speaker 1: She was really good. I had the same reaction. I
- 41:10Speaker 1: was like, what happened to her?
- 41:11Speaker 2: She was, yeah, so I do know the story.
- 41:13Speaker 3: I remember we were filming and it was a couple
- 41:16Speaker 3: of episodes in and she was going to come back
- 41:18Speaker 3: as my nemesis. And she was saying how she had
- 41:22Speaker 3: just got this part on a television show that was
- 41:25Speaker 3: going to take her out of California, or not out
- 41:27Speaker 3: of California, but out of the Los Angeles area, and
- 41:30Speaker 3: she was going to go do that instead.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Now I remember being like, but what about us? What?
- 41:35Speaker 2: What about what we've got going?
- 41:36Speaker 3: This is so funny, and she was like, you know,
- 41:38Speaker 3: I'm a guest star on this show, but on the
- 41:41Speaker 3: other show I would be a lead.
- 41:43Speaker 2: And so she went and took the other job. To
- 41:45Speaker 2: be honest with you, enough you.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Remember what the show was.
- 41:47Speaker 2: It was Trimors.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Oh okay, it was the syndicated version of Tremors, and
- 41:50Speaker 3: I remember it ran for a while and the dad
- 41:53Speaker 3: from Family Ties, I think, is on it.
- 41:55Speaker 2: I'm not sure. I couldn't.
- 41:57Speaker 1: I just remember watching that scene, which we'll get to
- 42:00Speaker 1: later in the episode. And you guys had such a
- 42:02Speaker 1: funny banter that that's spoofing of a couple driving together.
- 42:06Speaker 1: And then I had the same thought. I go, oh
- 42:08Speaker 1: that that that young woman was so funny. What happened
- 42:10Speaker 1: to her? And I guess she got her own show
- 42:12Speaker 1: at the time.
- 42:12Speaker 3: She got well, yeah, she got a job and went
- 42:15Speaker 3: on to do other things to.
- 42:17Speaker 4: Other people of Scrubs Lore who were introduced in this
- 42:19Speaker 4: episode seven fifty nine, I very quickly. If you watched
- 42:24Speaker 4: Danny Rose, you killed the sistant and obviously became a
- 42:27Speaker 4: producer on the show. He walks by in the park
- 42:29Speaker 4: and he has Tankers.
- 42:30Speaker 1: On his shoulders, shoulders, Yeah, and Tankers was what a
- 42:33Speaker 1: big bulldog that he Yeah, Tankers And I just we
- 42:38Speaker 1: have to talk about the legendary Mike Schwartz, who plays
- 42:41Speaker 1: his very first appearance, very first appearance. A lot of
- 42:44Speaker 1: times we're watching these episodes and I forget that some
- 42:46Speaker 1: of the people were introduced so early. So Mike Schwartz
- 42:48Speaker 1: was one of the writers on the show, very funny,
- 42:50Speaker 1: a comedy writer, and he plays the delivery guy, the
- 42:52Speaker 1: ups guy, if you will. That his first they established
- 42:55Speaker 1: him giving something to Kelso and then later he comes
- 42:58Speaker 1: and delivers a ton of bricks to me, he is
- 43:00Speaker 1: uh he We had so many laughs with that guy.
- 43:02Speaker 4: Huh oh my god, constantly doing bits and making us
- 43:05Speaker 4: all laugh. Like you walk by him in the hallway
- 43:07Speaker 4: and he'd be like, what's that, it's Jack Crew.
- 43:10Speaker 2: He would do this.
- 43:11Speaker 1: He would do this bit that I don't know why.
- 43:13Speaker 1: It was so funny, but he would go he would
- 43:15Speaker 1: pretend to call off to someone that wasn't there, and
- 43:18Speaker 1: he would and he would do a bit where he
- 43:20Speaker 1: was pretending that they were asking him who made his shirt,
- 43:23Speaker 1: and so he'd be reaching for the tag. He'd be what, oh,
- 43:26Speaker 1: hold on to me. Oh yeah, it's Jay Crew. And
- 43:30Speaker 1: it was so stupid, but he was talking to no
- 43:32Speaker 1: one and you would laugh every single time.
- 43:34Speaker 4: Every time we're lonely this guy in the world, where
- 43:36Speaker 4: you tap him on the shoulder and be like.
- 43:38Speaker 1: We ended up putting that in the show.
- 43:42Speaker 3: He went on to be the Was he the drummer
- 43:46Speaker 3: for the for the airband that same episode that we
- 43:49Speaker 3: were talking.
- 43:49Speaker 1: About, y Yeah, he liked his character. Like later episodes,
- 43:52Speaker 1: we learned that his character like speed metal.
- 43:55Speaker 3: Right and and and that his character was a big
- 43:57Speaker 3: time like drug addict and everything like that, and it
- 43:59Speaker 3: was always I think, and he was very lonely.
- 44:01Speaker 1: But that that bit about that was his bit where
- 44:04Speaker 1: you if no one touched him, So if you ever
- 44:06Speaker 1: did graize his shoulder, he would sort of cuddle his
- 44:09Speaker 1: own shoulder because he was so low. He was so
- 44:12Speaker 1: lonely and lacking of touch, the.
- 44:14Speaker 4: Loneliest guy in the world. And then Randall Winston is
- 44:16Speaker 4: introduced as Death.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Yes, yeahs, And Randall Winston was our line producer on
- 44:23Speaker 1: the show. And uh, for those who don't know, a
- 44:25Speaker 1: line producer is the producer that really is handling the
- 44:27Speaker 1: sort of the daily money of things, really like the
- 44:30Speaker 1: guy with the spreadsheet being like we can afford that,
- 44:32Speaker 1: we can't afford that. And he was a very he
- 44:35Speaker 1: was he is a very tall man. How tall would
- 44:38Speaker 1: you say, is six seven or six six? Yeah? And
- 44:40Speaker 1: so he he was established early on as as Death
- 44:45Speaker 1: and whole run. Yes, and some of you are too
- 44:49Speaker 1: young to know that what this joke is about. Connect four,
- 44:53Speaker 1: But Connect four was a was a game from it
- 44:56Speaker 1: still is a game kids still, But I'm saying they
- 44:58Speaker 1: didn't have the cheesy ad. She's the ad in the
- 45:01Speaker 1: eighties was a brother and sister playing and the sister
- 45:04Speaker 1: wins and the brother goes pretty Sneaky Sis. Remember that
- 45:11Speaker 1: you guys can look it up on YouTube. And so
- 45:13Speaker 1: that's why we were spoofing that old eighties ad where
- 45:16Speaker 1: I go Pretty Sneaky Death.
- 45:19Speaker 3: But you got to do the lead up to it
- 45:21Speaker 3: is I win where I don't see it right here
- 45:25Speaker 3: diagonally pretty Sneaky.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Sis, Pretty Sneaky Sis.
- 45:31Speaker 4: And Randall is his main belief was that it's not
- 45:35Speaker 4: a party unless both hands are in the air. So
- 45:37Speaker 4: we had the most incredible rap parties and.
- 45:43Speaker 3: Parties man and Randall and Randall is like some of
- 45:48Speaker 3: the highlights of every part, like the some of the
- 45:52Speaker 3: best party highlights that I've ever experienced involved Randall.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Fortunately for us, the guys ending the money for the
- 46:00Speaker 1: party really loved to party.
- 46:03Speaker 4: Yeah, we had some good parties.
- 46:05Speaker 1: I'm sure there's episodes where they were like, you don't
- 46:06Speaker 1: need that set, we're throwing a party.
- 46:12Speaker 4: Why Johnny Ce's home space looked very sparse because we
- 46:17Speaker 4: needed to.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Go to Vogah. God, we were just talking about that,
- 46:20Speaker 1: how Johnny Seed they didn't get around to Johnny cees
- 46:22Speaker 1: uh partly building Johnny C's apartment. It was just a
- 46:25Speaker 1: hospital set, but.
- 46:26Speaker 4: I think Randall spearheaded. I'm sure the like we got
- 46:28Speaker 4: to we got to go on that crazy, amazing trip
- 46:31Speaker 4: everybody to Vegas. We had to do like they were
- 46:34Speaker 4: able to kind of combine a press event with the
- 46:37Speaker 4: Scrubs wrap party, and so they organized it so like
- 46:40Speaker 4: our whole cap went to Vegas all together.
- 46:43Speaker 2: Things that will never happen ever in again.
- 46:47Speaker 1: I doubt any show is taking their whole company to
- 46:49Speaker 1: Vegas to throw a bash.
- 46:51Speaker 2: Will the old days, Yeah.
- 46:54Speaker 4: When we got to shoot a whole season in the
- 46:56Speaker 4: Bahamas with the whole crew.
- 46:58Speaker 1: A company an episode, Sarah may have stayed and shot
- 47:00Speaker 1: a season.
- 47:03Speaker 4: What is the season?
- 47:04Speaker 1: Donald? I want to know a sports question, and I
- 47:07Speaker 1: want you to be honest. Yes, did you know what
- 47:09Speaker 1: the quote unquote catch was? Absolutely, it's about it. It's
- 47:13Speaker 1: a famous thing that sports people know about.
- 47:15Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 47:16Speaker 3: So Joe Montana, Yeah, it looked like he couldn't throw
- 47:20Speaker 3: it to anyone in this game. Now, granted, I don't
- 47:23Speaker 3: know who who they were playing, so when we're talking
- 47:27Speaker 3: about it in the show, I didn't know who they
- 47:28Speaker 3: were playing. But he found Dwight Clark in the end
- 47:31Speaker 3: zone and it was you know, it's one of the
- 47:34Speaker 3: biggest catches in history. As a matter of fact, it's
- 47:37Speaker 3: a part of a commercial, like a Gatorade commercial or
- 47:39Speaker 3: something like that. And that's how I first heard about
- 47:42Speaker 3: it because I wasn't a big football fan growing up.
- 47:45Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 47:46Speaker 3: I didn't become a football fan until later on in life.
- 47:48Speaker 3: But yes, I did know when we did the when
- 47:50Speaker 3: when they referenced the catch, I knew exactly what it was.
- 47:53Speaker 1: Okay, good because I didn't know because I don't know
- 47:55Speaker 1: anything about sports. If like everyone who's into sports knows, oh,
- 47:58Speaker 1: the catch, it's called like the catch.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Well, I mean at that time it was called the catch.
- 48:03Speaker 3: I'm sure Since then they're like Eli Manning and Mario
- 48:07Speaker 3: Manningham they have a you know how he found him
- 48:11Speaker 3: on the you know, running down the it's it's I
- 48:14Speaker 3: didn't know when or where the catch was, but I
- 48:17Speaker 3: had heard of the reference before.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Donald tell us about the bowling Thinguse I was laughing
- 48:21Speaker 1: at this, going, what are those what are those pins?
- 48:23Speaker 4: Like?
- 48:23Speaker 1: What is that supposed to be in the hospital of
- 48:25Speaker 1: those giant blue things.
- 48:27Speaker 3: First of all, this this is a testament for how
- 48:29Speaker 3: immature Christopher Turk was so the kid says to him, Hey,
- 48:32Speaker 3: it's the catch. Turk turns around and goes, yeah, I'll
- 48:34Speaker 3: watched the Catch with you, And within fifteen minutes he's
- 48:37Speaker 3: bowling a kid down the hospital hall, Like, how did
- 48:41Speaker 3: this kid convince?
- 48:42Speaker 2: Like, that's how weak willed Chris Turk is.
- 48:44Speaker 3: How in the hell did this kid convince him to
- 48:48Speaker 3: put him in a wheelchair and push him down the
- 48:51Speaker 3: hall into a bunch of I guess they were recycling bins.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Is that what they were supposed to being? I think so,
- 48:57Speaker 1: because to me they look like cardboard tubes that someone.
- 49:00Speaker 3: Right, I'm hoping that it was a recycling but like,
- 49:03Speaker 3: how did this kid convince him? And the rest of
- 49:05Speaker 3: the floor, Like Chris Turk walked out the room and
- 49:08Speaker 3: was like, Yo, this is what we're gonna do, all right,
- 49:12Speaker 3: I'm gonna put him in a wheelchair.
- 49:13Speaker 1: I know I just started. I know, I just started
- 49:16Speaker 1: as a doctor here, but I'm gonna roll a patient
- 49:19Speaker 1: in a wheelchair down the hall. If you're a new doctor,
- 49:23Speaker 1: don't try that at work, please.
- 49:25Speaker 3: Well, and that was the great thing about the show
- 49:27Speaker 3: also is that he was held accountable for it, you know,
- 49:31Speaker 3: Kelso right away and This is where Kelso mentors Turk
- 49:34Speaker 3: kind of also like, we're not here to make friends,
- 49:36Speaker 3: We're here to treat these patients.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Dude, be a doctor.
- 49:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I wanted to talk about the park Salary referenced
- 49:42Speaker 1: it already, but I remember feeling really bad at nine
- 49:45Speaker 1: minutes and thirty seconds slamming that little girl's face into
- 49:48Speaker 1: the cake.
- 49:48Speaker 2: That was hilarious. I wish I could do that to
- 49:50Speaker 2: my kids sometimes.
- 49:52Speaker 1: It was funny. I mean it was funny on paper
- 49:54Speaker 1: when we got there and she has that cute little
- 49:56Speaker 1: face and I was like, so, you guys really want
- 49:58Speaker 1: me to jam this girl's face cake? And they're like, yeah,
- 50:01Speaker 1: you gotta do it. You can't just like fake it.
- 50:02Speaker 1: You got to do it. And I was like, and
- 50:04Speaker 1: I talked to her. I was like, sweety, are you
- 50:06Speaker 1: okay with this? And She's like, yeah, sure, it's gonna
- 50:08Speaker 1: be funny. And I was like, all right, here we go,
- 50:09Speaker 1: and I just jammed her head in and it felt
- 50:11Speaker 1: really nice.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Yeah, listen, Sarah can attest to this. She hasked children,
- 50:16Speaker 2: as much as we love our children.
- 50:17Speaker 4: Oh, sometimes you want to just.
- 50:21Speaker 2: And on their face into a cake, especially going.
- 50:25Speaker 4: To be quarantining for the near multiple multiple days months.
- 50:30Speaker 3: If I had the opportunity and I knew my wife
- 50:33Speaker 3: wouldn't be pissed off at me for doing it, Rocco's
- 50:36Speaker 3: face would have been slammed into a couple of its.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Birthday cakes, into many a cake.
- 50:40Speaker 2: I'm just gonna put that out there right.
- 50:42Speaker 4: Now, and I need to go bake a couple of cakes.
- 50:44Speaker 1: We're gonna go break and we come back. We have
- 50:46Speaker 1: a caller, all right. We're getting good at that whole
- 50:55Speaker 1: break thing, Joelle. We're very lucky here on this show,
- 50:58Speaker 1: Sarah Chalk that we get to take a call or
- 51:00Speaker 1: once an episode. And here she is, what's your what's your?
- 51:04Speaker 2: Alexis Torres?
- 51:08Speaker 1: In Donald just gave you an oprah intro. Oh I
- 51:13Speaker 1: was looking for your name. And the good thing about
- 51:15Speaker 1: zoom is it just says it right there. Alexis Torres
- 51:17Speaker 1: plumbley right there on the bottom ruin the woman's hearing
- 51:24Speaker 1: she's in quarantine.
- 51:26Speaker 6: I'm actually in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania right now.
- 51:29Speaker 1: In My family has a steakhouse nearby called the Glass Lounge.
- 51:38Speaker 6: Oh. I haven't gone there yet, but it's awesome.
- 51:40Speaker 1: Will you go there? I want you to tell him
- 51:43Speaker 1: I sent you. If you're in there, if you're in
- 51:45Speaker 1: that area, go.
- 51:46Speaker 2: To the gods. It's going to be a wild buddy.
- 51:48Speaker 1: It's going to be a will Oh yeah, not now obviously,
- 51:50Speaker 1: but you know when when this last nightmare is over,
- 51:53Speaker 1: go check out the Glass Lounge.
- 51:55Speaker 6: Yeah, I will definitely go for sure.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Thank you for coming on.
- 51:58Speaker 2: And do you have a question?
- 52:00Speaker 1: Doesn't have to be Sarah Chalk focused. It doesn't just
- 52:03Speaker 1: because she's you want.
- 52:05Speaker 2: To we understand.
- 52:08Speaker 4: Is a human and she probably knows the best person
- 52:11Speaker 4: to talk to.
- 52:12Speaker 6: I mean, we'll see. Not just kidding.
- 52:16Speaker 5: I have actually technically a question for all of you guys.
- 52:20Speaker 5: If you could switch rolls with anyone in the series,
- 52:22Speaker 5: any character, Who would it be and how would you
- 52:25Speaker 5: play their character? Would it be different than how it
- 52:27Speaker 5: was originally played?
- 52:28Speaker 1: Or that's a very good question. Sara go first.
- 52:32Speaker 4: I mean, if it meant that I could have Donald's
- 52:35Speaker 4: dancing skills?
- 52:37Speaker 1: Was the fantasy? Was that fantasy that Sarah and I
- 52:39Speaker 1: were making out and I was making out with you
- 52:41Speaker 1: because she was you? Oh my god?
- 52:43Speaker 3: That it starts off where you guys are making out
- 52:44Speaker 3: and then she's like you fantasized about kissing turk just now,
- 52:47Speaker 3: didn't you?
- 52:50Speaker 4: And then I made up with Mandy Moore as myself.
- 52:52Speaker 1: You were Mandy was dressed up as herself. No, Mandy
- 52:55Speaker 1: was just herself and you were dressed up as me.
- 52:56Speaker 1: I think, right, I think that was a really beautiful
- 52:59Speaker 1: moment and television history right there.
- 53:01Speaker 4: Did you make out how to make up with Judy
- 53:03Speaker 4: in the pilot? Yeah, that's right.
- 53:05Speaker 1: Yeah, we just watched that were you made out with
- 53:07Speaker 1: the model girl?
- 53:08Speaker 2: Is that the pilot or is that the second episode?
- 53:10Speaker 1: That was the second episode?
- 53:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:11Speaker 1: But so you'd like to be Donald if you could
- 53:13Speaker 1: be anybody else, is what you're saying.
- 53:14Speaker 4: Well, if I could, if if I could do that
- 53:16Speaker 4: fucking poison dance or rowdy, that would be pretty low.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Low brush crush. It's a very good question, I guess.
- 53:26Speaker 1: I it's funny because you don't want to pick. You
- 53:29Speaker 1: want to have some screen time, right, you want to
- 53:31Speaker 1: pick one of the seven, so you're gonna have some
- 53:32Speaker 1: good screen time. I think I would choose Johnny c
- 53:37Speaker 1: just because he had such amazing and they just knew
- 53:40Speaker 1: how to write for him so amazingly well, and he
- 53:43Speaker 1: he was just Uh, I don't know. I think that
- 53:47Speaker 1: I just love the all the material they gave Johnny,
- 53:50Speaker 1: So I think that would be a really challenging fun
- 53:51Speaker 1: part to even attempt to do.
- 53:54Speaker 4: To pick mash walking around in a banana hammock.
- 53:56Speaker 3: That's who I was gonna pick. If I could pick anybody,
- 53:58Speaker 3: I guess it would be Mash. Uh because if I
- 54:02Speaker 3: could get But like we teased, we used to make
- 54:04Speaker 3: fun of Mashow about running line and everything like that.
- 54:07Speaker 3: But I had such a hard time learning my lines
- 54:09Speaker 3: back then that I probably it probably would have suited
- 54:11Speaker 3: me to play Mash.
- 54:13Speaker 1: You know, the first thing, the first step to a
- 54:16Speaker 1: solving memorizing your lin style is to actually just do.
- 54:19Speaker 2: It, or to read the script. Actually that's read the script.
- 54:23Speaker 1: I love how you're always like I just have such
- 54:24Speaker 1: a hard time memorizing class. I'm like, dude, you've been
- 54:26Speaker 1: playing PlayStation in your pressing room.
- 54:28Speaker 2: That's all I look.
- 54:29Speaker 1: You even looked at it.
- 54:30Speaker 2: No, Yeah, okay, right, do you have another question?
- 54:32Speaker 1: Another question? We're going to answer a better one.
- 54:36Speaker 2: Yeah, your question sucked. That's what I just said.
- 54:39Speaker 4: I like you, I like creatives. It was it was thoughtful.
- 54:44Speaker 1: I think You're spectacular, and I love Harrisburg, but I
- 54:47Speaker 1: think you got a better question than you.
- 54:51Speaker 2: No, I don't know if now you got.
- 54:53Speaker 5: To ask what was something that you were super proud
- 54:56Speaker 5: of back then that you did. Maybe it was a
- 54:58Speaker 5: scene or a specific joke or anything like that. But
- 55:01Speaker 5: then now, since you guys are doing the rewatch and
- 55:04Speaker 5: you've seen it, now you're kind of like, oh, that
- 55:05Speaker 5: wasn't as good as I remember.
- 55:07Speaker 1: That's a good question, Sarah. As guests, do you have
- 55:10Speaker 1: to go first?
- 55:11Speaker 4: Jesus the pressure. I feel like interestingly enough.
- 55:15Speaker 1: Like you're like, I feel like interesting enough. I was
- 55:17Speaker 1: just fucking amazing.
- 55:18Speaker 6: I mean, I mean, I thought you were amazing.
- 55:20Speaker 4: Like the early stuff a little bit hard, harder to watch.
- 55:24Speaker 4: I feel like I learned so much on the show.
- 55:27Speaker 4: I feel like I learned so much from Baill, I
- 55:28Speaker 4: learned so much from the rest of the cast. And
- 55:30Speaker 4: I feel like it's so different watching those early episode
- 55:34Speaker 4: Thans eight years later, certainly with Elliott who the character
- 55:37Speaker 4: changed a lot. Like in the pilot, we even did reshoots.
- 55:39Speaker 4: She was much harder and much you know, there was
- 55:42Speaker 4: she was a bit more of a batch in the
- 55:45Speaker 4: in the in the beginning and then and then we
- 55:47Speaker 4: actually did a couple of reshoots to soften her, and
- 55:50Speaker 4: then I think, you know, the line between me and
- 55:54Speaker 4: her started to blur. It's a first part of your question,
- 55:57Speaker 4: what were you the most proud of? Certainly interestingly enough,
- 55:59Speaker 4: it's this is definitely one of those episodes like when
- 56:02Speaker 4: I think back on the eight years, this is the
- 56:03Speaker 4: first one to pop into my mind about just the
- 56:07Speaker 4: kind of show that that Scrubs was.
- 56:10Speaker 6: And and.
- 56:12Speaker 4: Then in terms of things to do differently, well, that's just.
- 56:16Speaker 1: I mean, Sarah, I don't think you could have done
- 56:17Speaker 1: everything differently. I wish that I could go back and
- 56:20Speaker 1: have a chin, because I this episode starts with the
- 56:25Speaker 1: least flattering view of my non existent chin, and in
- 56:30Speaker 1: later episodes I would I would look at the director
- 56:32Speaker 1: and be like, bro, don't shoot me like that. I mean,
- 56:34Speaker 1: I'm doing I'm doing the best I can with what
- 56:37Speaker 1: I have, but that's not the angle I want for
- 56:39Speaker 1: myself and Bill.
- 56:41Speaker 4: I don't know how many listeners know this, but Bill
- 56:43Speaker 4: would like to add things that were actual, real physical
- 56:46Speaker 4: attributes and write them into the show, so characters would
- 56:50Speaker 4: be named by their physical attributes. So like the guy
- 56:52Speaker 4: with the beard is beard for say, because you know,
- 56:55Speaker 4: and so so for me my character, you know, you
- 56:58Speaker 4: had to say lines like short gives me pig face,
- 57:01Speaker 4: which is not untrue, and or there was one where
- 57:06Speaker 4: I had my characters like, oh yeah, chin, hair's back
- 57:09Speaker 4: because I have this mole where three hairs grow out
- 57:12Speaker 4: of it. And so that was actually written into the show.
- 57:15Speaker 4: By the way, my son said to me a few
- 57:17Speaker 4: years ago, completely seriously. He's like, Mama, I have terrible news.
- 57:21Speaker 4: And I said what, and he goes, you're growing a beard.
- 57:25Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 57:26Speaker 4: So so there were definitely moments of the show where
- 57:30Speaker 4: he just had to go gate all in the name
- 57:32Speaker 4: of comedy and so air out my biggest insecurities. Yeah,
- 57:37Speaker 4: and you know, in terms of how it worked too,
- 57:39Speaker 4: like Bill would come up and he would watch us,
- 57:41Speaker 4: and this is not common for every you know, creator
- 57:43Speaker 4: of a show to come up for every single rehearsal.
- 57:46Speaker 4: He would come up from you know, to the to
- 57:48Speaker 4: the set from the writer's room, and the writer's room
- 57:50Speaker 4: was in another wing of the hospital. He would tweak
- 57:53Speaker 4: a lot of stuff. He would say, I actually don't
- 57:55Speaker 4: love this blocking I think how it had it in
- 57:57Speaker 4: my head was X Y or Z, and and he
- 58:00Speaker 4: would he would. He would tweak our performance in our
- 58:02Speaker 4: jokes too, to the point where, like a lot of
- 58:04Speaker 4: times I think actors like don't like a line read,
- 58:06Speaker 4: and I just had so much respect for him, I'd
- 58:08Speaker 4: be like, yeah, just if you've got some way in
- 58:10Speaker 4: your head, just you know, tell us we'll do it right.
- 58:14Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Well, thank you for coming on, Lexis plumb.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Are you gonna give her? Are you gonna give you
- 58:21Speaker 1: the Oprah? Goodbye? Send off as well done.
- 58:24Speaker 3: Let's say goodbye to Alexis trus Plumber.
- 58:29Speaker 1: You get a car, You get a car, You get a.
- 58:31Speaker 2: Car, Alexis, we cannot give you a car.
- 58:33Speaker 6: I know it's okay.
- 58:34Speaker 1: I can't go anywhere anyway, go anywhere, yes, yes, go
- 58:38Speaker 1: get a state. When this is all said and done
- 58:39Speaker 1: at the Glass Lounge, all right, thank you so much, Alexis,
- 58:42Speaker 1: Alexis writer, you guys. At eleven forty nine, one of
- 58:45Speaker 1: my biggest regrets in the history of Scrubs is that
- 58:48Speaker 1: I flinch right before those bricks fall on me. And
- 58:51Speaker 1: I remember Bill being so disappointed in me because there
- 58:54Speaker 1: were like four takes of it, and I flinched every time.
- 58:56Speaker 1: But it's pretty tricky to not flinch when you know, bunch,
- 59:00Speaker 1: I know that they're not real bricks, but it still
- 59:03Speaker 1: was noticeably uncomfortable.
- 59:06Speaker 4: I mean, it'd be pretty hard not to especially, I
- 59:08Speaker 4: feel like all that shit, like even if it was
- 59:10Speaker 4: like a major pratfall or something, once you've done it once,
- 59:14Speaker 4: I feel like our best chance out of the gate
- 59:16Speaker 4: is on your first take, because the second you've done it,
- 59:18Speaker 4: once you know what's going to happen, you know the
- 59:19Speaker 4: feeling of it. Maybe you like tweak something a little
- 59:21Speaker 4: bit in your shoulder, and then it's kind of it's around.
- 59:23Speaker 1: But this was early on in the show, and I
- 59:25Speaker 1: and I and I was I was really loving doing
- 59:27Speaker 1: physical comedy, and I always love physical comedy. You referenced
- 59:30Speaker 1: John Ridder. I mean when I grew up on Three's Company,
- 59:32Speaker 1: and I just thought that John Ridder was the funniest
- 59:35Speaker 1: person I'd ever seen, and I wanted to be like him.
- 59:39Speaker 1: And Bill was giving me lots of love for my
- 59:41Speaker 1: physical comedy. And this was the first moment where he
- 59:43Speaker 1: like called me in the editors room. He's like, dude,
- 59:45Speaker 1: you flinched on every take, and I was like, no,
- 59:49Speaker 1: you blew it. I was like, I let Daddy down,
- 59:52Speaker 1: fucking blew it.
- 59:53Speaker 4: The first time I was called up by by Bill
- 59:56Speaker 4: after he left the editing room was you guys will
- 59:59Speaker 4: remember the we had been so lucky to get nominated
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: for an Emmy and we were going and we were
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: excited and I got to borrow this fancy dress and
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: the stylist I never had a stylist before, and she said,
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: so you need to go get it. And I said, no,
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: I'm not going to do that. I'm not going to
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: go get a tan. And she said, okay, go get
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: a spray tan. And so I said, okay. So I
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: think the Emmys were like on the Sunday and so
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: on the friday of work.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: It might have been well before that. It might have
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: been well before that.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: It might have been like maybe five days before or
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: something like that, dude, because we did the whole up.
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: Okay, So I get to uh, I get to the
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: tanning booth and it's like that fucking episode of Friends
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: where Ross becomes a nine instead of for three because
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: it keeps spraying stuff at him. He doesn't turn around.
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: Its sprays again. So I get in there and you
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: watch this little video and you put this cream on
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: your hands and you got to spin around and do
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: these weird poses. And I had like negative five minute
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: to get this done before going to set, and I
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: put a hairnet over my face so that I wouldn't
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: tan my face, and then I rip that off and
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: then then keep spraying. And so I get to set
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: and I'm I'm tanned, and then.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: I say, hold on, now, you were you were full
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: of Oh no, not.
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: Yet, not yet, because what happens with this spray ten
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: is it develops over time. And so I was in
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: the makeup chair and my makeup and we're doing these
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: scenes and then as the day goes on, I'm just
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: getting like more and more and more tanned, and instead
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: of actually tanned, it was just more and more and
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: more orange. And so Bill comes harder than any special
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: effect we've ever done on a show, order than the
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: zac's head explode in the fantasy sequence is going to
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: be making you look less like an oop lumpa. They
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: were like, we're trying to float filters in front of
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: your face because we can't color time it and just
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: jack out, Like we can't just wind the knob and
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: take out some of the color because we keep doing it.
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: You're see with Donald and then make Donald white.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Dude.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: I'm gonna say something right now. I remember, I remember
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: when it happened. I remember you being on set, and
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: I remember saying to you, did you change something? Did
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: you do your hair different or something like that, what's
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: so different?
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: And you were I remember ten.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: I remember, just like kids in a in a family,
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: the three of us, whenever one of us was in trouble,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: I was always so happy when it wasn't me, and
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: you just be like you just be on set, just
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: kind of bouncing around, like shit, somebody's in trouble and
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: it's not me, and Sarah is freaking orange.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: So embarrassing.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: It's like we were laughing the other time.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: I got the braces on the inside of my mouth.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: They were laughing about that. When Donald showed up with
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: bracest and he would like, so Bill, I got braefif
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: and nobody couldn't even notice.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: The exact same thing.
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: Oh good, So did you just have to go get
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: and taken out?
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Right off? Yeah dude, Yeah, he made me getting taken out.
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: I got in visil line in like season two. Everybody
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: made so much fun of me, but I had to.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: I would like I had to take him out, like
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: right before tape. But you're supposed to war like twenty
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: two to tween. Like it was just a disaster.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: I just remember Donald. It was so funny watching him
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: try to sell the bill that the brace is. Nobody
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: was gonna notice those braces on the inside of his teeth.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: It's gonna be great. Everybody's gonna love this. Nobody keep
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: a good notice.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: And I think it's gonna be great for my It's
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: gonna be great for my teeth.
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: I remember I went I went home that night after
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: the spray tan and I had to scrub every ounce
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: of my body. I just my face and my body.
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: I just was like taking to it. And then I
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: did a movie in Hawaii last year and the person
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: wanted us to do a spray tand so Lauren Lapis
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: who plays the lead in the movie, and I was
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: supposed sposed to spray TANNDS and I said, I've actually
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: had a couple of really bad experiences with spray tanns.
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: I don't recommend it. I think it's just reacts with
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: me the bad Orangeewey and they're like, no, no, no,
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: we have like the best people in Hawaii. They're gonna come,
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: They're gonna do it, You're gonna love it. So I
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: come down. The next morning, the woman comes to how
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: Tell room, the four sprays you down. I come down.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: It's the hair and makeup trailer, and they are freaking out.
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: They're like, your legs are orange. And then Lauren Lapis
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: hasn't seen any of this preamble chee walks and she's like,
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: who loves the sprint? And they're like, Sarah, quickly go
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: back up, Joe tone, take some salt, scrub, scrub it
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: all off, get.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: It all off quick.
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: I'm like, okay, I'll be right back.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: Oh god, So Sarah, I don't think Spray's hands are
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: for you.
- 1:04:14Speaker 6: No.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: Do you burn when you get into the sun?
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: Uh?
- 1:04:18Speaker 6: He is?
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: She's very pale. Look at her, like how pale she is.
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: It was the other joke on this movie reason Hawaii.
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: I would literally, in between in between scenes, I would be,
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: you know, completely covered up to the point where we
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: would go out at night and everyone else would be like, uh, chock,
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: do you have your son screening on? Like I just
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: I mean, oh I burn.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Let's talk about this scene. But the dramatic scene, Sarah,
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: I think your acting is really good. Here at seventeen
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: oh three, there's this awesome scene where you and Judy,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: where Judy comes to get you and you're at the
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: soda machine. I think this is a really really good
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: acting on your part.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Was this Was this the first big monologue for you
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: on the show?
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: I thought you were gonna say? Was this the first
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: that you put in your iPod and listen to Josh Raiden?
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: Oh?
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Is that what you did? Or you're giving Josh Raiden?
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: Was it Josh Raiden?
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: Or was it?
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Who was it?
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: I will remember, well, don't don't take away her, don't
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: take away her. Josh Raiden plugged Donald.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: Josh Rayden's gotten enough plugs on this show?
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: Is that? Is that?
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: Is that how you used to get to make your
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: eyes uh, to make yourself emotional in eyes tear up?
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: Well? I was still young. I mean at that point.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: Now you know, as you grow old or you have
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: many more experiences draw from. But I used to use
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: an iPod and I would play sad music and kind
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: of get into the mode. I don't know then that
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: scene was kind of it was very early on. It
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: was enough. I mean, I remember just shooting.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: It and it was was it babies got back? I mean,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: there's something about the lyrics this.
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: You can see if you look very closely, if you
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: stop freeze the frame, you can see my hips just
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: kind of undulate. My booty's shaken a little bit. Yeah,
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: Josh Raiden, let's give a plug man. He he obviously
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: was a soundtrack to many things. I delivered my children
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: to josh O Raydory.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: You go if you're gonna, if you're gonna deliver your
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: children and that's coming up, we recommend you use the
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: musical stylings of Joshua Raidon.
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: Josh Raidon sang the song at my wedding. Their first
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: dance was to Josh Raydon and he fucked up the
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: song tremendously, he did. But I love them, Oh my god.
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: He didn't even remember the song. I got the video,
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: Which got the video?
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: Which which song of it was it? It was? It
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: was which song of his?
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: No, it was moon pours through the ceiling tonight and
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: praises us with life And it was perfect for the uh,
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: for the moment.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: The rest of my life. Cake of this night. Whoa yeah,
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: And only the heartaches have given me side. They bring
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: me to you, right, bring me to you. Fucked it
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: up the whole He fucked up the whole song. Dude,
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: I wish op no, it was It's fun, dude, he
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: did it. Listen.
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: It's not every day you get somebody like him to
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: one perform at your wedding, also to do it for free.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: So you know that he also performed at Ellen's wedding.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: I'm sure they paid him. I didn't have to pay him,
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: and for that alone. And thank you Josh Raydon. You
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: are one of my heroes.
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: KEVII Donald didn't ask me to sing at his wedding.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: By the way, has the worst voice in the world. America.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: Let me tell you something, America and all other nations listening,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: don't ever let Sarah sing. Windows will break these what
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: this what's happening in my house? The windows going?
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: I was conspicuously absent in the musical episode.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: And also, do you remember when when the whenyl when
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: Daryl Hannah and splash says her name. That's what happens
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: when Sarah.
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: I guess we haven't covered that yet that you guys
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: didn't ask me to help you record the opening song.
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: Can you imagine do.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: You like our song?
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: I love your song.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Charlie Pooth wrote the music and Donald and I
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: were Donald and I were the lyrisis.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: Well, we wrote the melody too and then sent it
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: to him. Well the melody is right.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Credit for melody melody was us. Charlie Pooth is producer
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: and music writer, right, and you and I are the lyricists.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: But we can also we also need to give a
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: little shout out to sitcom shows from back in the day,
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: like the Jefferson Oh.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and someone said on Twitter, I thought it was
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: it was right. It said, it's a mix between the
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: Brady Bunch theme and the Jeffersons theme.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's exactly what it is.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Yeah. I thought that was really perfect. Sarah, do you
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: find yourself singing our theme song when you're in your
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: house in quarantine?
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: It's it's you know, I I've actually learned it. I've
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: got learning the guitar of the ukulelea actually, And i''ll
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: send you guys a clip of me singing and you
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: you know, I'll leave it in your hands if you.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: Show my girlfriend caught me on the treadmill listening to
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: our theme song and laughed at me, not with me.
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: At me. You're proud of it. You're proud of it.
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: Things I noticed about the show, about this show go ahead.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: I had no idea that I bopped that hard in
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: the hallway. And when I say bop, I mean like
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: I had this straight up. My walk is legendary.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: To go strut, is it like a stress?
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: It's like a struck. But it's like so over the top, dude,
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: it's so over the top.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: It's like George Jefferson when he would this is.
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: Exactly like George jeffersons. It's like so heavy. It's like, yo, dude,
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: why are you going so hard with that?
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: And that was your inspiration? Do you remember who your
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: inspiration was?
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: It's always Sherman Hemsley, Sherman Hemsley always.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: I wanted to say something about the scene in nineteen
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: oh seven There's the I had this dramatic scene with
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: Catherinejustin and it was the first time I ever had
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: the balls to go to Bill because I thought I
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: did a good job. And then he showed me an
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: edit of it and he had taken out some of
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: my dramatic pauses, and it was one of the first
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: times in my acting career where I was like, I
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: was like, I gotta go talk to him because he's
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: making me look like a bad actor. He's he's taking
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: out the pauses like you know, because you know, the
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: show had to be cut down to twenty two minutes
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: or something, and I remember Bill Willing like, dude, there's
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: no time. It's twenty two minutes. There's no time for pauses.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: There's no time for dramatic pauses. And I think in
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: the end he put he put a little bit back,
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: but it was like it was when she goes, are
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: you okay? And then I go, I'm scared. And then
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: when I saw it edited together for the first time,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: I was like, are you okay? I'm scared? And I
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: was like, oh, that makes me look really bad. And
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: this is the thing that actors, I'm sure I know
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: as a director feel all the time. Sometimes you look
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: and go, why did you cut me like that? Like
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: on the day, I thought I was doing a much
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: better job. But if you take out that pause and
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: cut to me like like that, I don't look as
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: good as I want to be. You know, I'm sure
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: you guys had that feeling throughout the show.
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: Sometimes, well, yeah, you know, you we would tell jokes
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: sometimes and jokes wouldn't make the show, and you know,
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: we'd have moments where we thought, you know, we were
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: crushing it and then only to see you know, the
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: editors and Bill decided to use the reaction shot instead
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: of your actual you know, instead of your.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: Before gone right or the joke's just completely gone right. Yeah,
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: I love that.
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: I love that scene that you're talking about, Zac. It
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: was one of my favorite ones in the in the
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: episode when you know, she tells you to go and
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: live your life and you're like, you know, uh huh uh,
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: I'm just taking on a few things. And you go
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: up to the thing and you're kind of pretending.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: I don't want to go, and and then it's always
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: you know, my father, who passed away recently, always always
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: would reference this moment in Scrubs that he thought it
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: was so incredibly moving, the idea of a of an
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: older woman comforting a young doctor about death. And and
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: he said, I just you know, he was, He's like,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: I never seen anything like that before, and and and
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: I just watching it this time, I just remember how
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: much he would always reference that because it was so
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: beautiful that that sentiment that the JD doesn't know how
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: to deal with death yet, but here's this older woman
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: who's ready to go and she's the one comforting him
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: about it. I just thought that was beautifully written.
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: Somehow managed to also be funny in parts. That was
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: what I couldn't believe, Like when she's just like everybody dies,
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: No they don't.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: Right, No, they don't right the Scheifel to the Miffel Tower.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: The Mindful Tower, the Minffel Tower, about the Minfele Tower.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: That being said, the whole list thing, especially the way
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: things are right now, that whole list thing, got me
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: to thinking, you know what I mean, I don't have
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: any regrets in my life or anything like that, but
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: there are certain things that I still want to do,
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: you know what I mean. And uh, you know, we're
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: in quarantine and it doesn't seem like, you know, it
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: doesn't feel like we're going to get out of this
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: anytime soon, you know what I mean. Not to sound
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: more but or dark or anything like that, but when
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: JD brings up the list and she's like, I've done
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: all of those things already, it really made me think, like, well,
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: you know, when this is over, I'm gonna make sure
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: that I get out and I live a lot more
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: than I did before, you know what I mean?
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: And well, that's interesting. I mean this quarantine thing, I agree.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: I think it gives you perspective. And I've just been
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: feeling focusing on gratitude a lot because I just think that,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: like when all this is so insane, and it makes
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: you focus on how lucky we are and what we
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: want to appreciate in life. You know, they just the
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: simple things like being able to go to a restaurant
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: with friends and laugh and have a drink. And I
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: don't know, it's interesting you say that. So have you
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: made a list on? Are you making lists of things
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: you want to know?
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: I'm going to start a list.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: A lot of it has to do with my kids
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: and making sure that they get to experience a lot
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: of the things that I didn't experience when I was
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: a kid, when I was young, you know what I mean.
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: I try to do that now, but I feel like
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: maybe I need to go a little bit overboard, and then,
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: you know, have my wife tell me we need to
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: dial it back a little bit. We're going too far,
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: you know what I mean, Like, Uh, there's certain things
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: that my kids have never done that, and that's because
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: I don't do it, you know what I mean, and don't.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: I don't want to do that to them. I want
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: them to have that experience in that adventure.
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: I feel like I feel like it's it's also because
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: we don't know when this is over. We don't know
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: how long we're going to be doing for and it
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: doesn't seem to be short. Obviously, it sounds like potent.
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: Until we have a vaccine. Who knows how long this
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: chunk of our lives is and what it looks like
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: and whether it opens back up. I feel like as
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: impossible it is, it is and has trite as it's
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: like trying to be in the moment and trying to
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: figure out what like the rare times with them that
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: I have now that are so hard to get in
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: the like in the every day you think about how
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: much time you spend in the car driving them to activities,
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: doing whatever, and when work takes over and that becomes
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: so all consuming, and I feel like as much of
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: it is that we can squeeze out just here, like
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: just sitting with them, Like I was reading something the
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: other day saying, you know, people are worried about their
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: kids getting behind in education. What if they actually came
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: out ahead. And I thought that was such a cool
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: way to look at it, Like, kids, this is going
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: to form who they are and who they become. And
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: what if they actually start to appreciate the small things
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: that we're starting to appreciate right now instead of just
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: the grind of everyday life. And what if they actually
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: learn to do meaningful chores at home and learn the
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: the value in that and learn how to you know, actually.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: Be I hear.
- 1:15:05Speaker 6: You know.
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: The only thing I worry about with all of that
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: is there's social skills when this is all said and done,
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: you know what I mean, That's the only thing I
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: worry about. But yeah, you know, we got this kid reading,
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: you know, she's on site words and we're trying to
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: get her to read and stuff like that, and we're
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: working with math and all of that stuff. But at
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: the end of the day, it's like, you know, there's
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: something special about being around other children their age to
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: interact with, you know what I mean.
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: It's so true. I know my heartbreaks for only kids
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: who are you know, having to go through this right
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: now with no kids to play with it's really hard.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: The show ends with Hallelujah by John Cale, which has
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: been covered by lots of folks. I thought this was
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: a particularly beautiful rendition, and again I think it was
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: the first real time I noticed the show ending with
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: a sweet, somber, uplifting song in a beautiful way cutting
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: to the montage, and I got I wrote down, I
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: got goosebumps at twenty fourteen when we all three whip
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: our heads around, yeah, revealing that we've all it's not
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: one in three in this case. The odds have fallen,
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: so we've lost three of three. I got goosebumps up
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: and down my arms at that moment. I thought that
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: was really beautifully done.
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: Absolutely so shocking when that happens, right Like, as a viewer,
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: I think you're not expecting that. You're kind of waiting
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: for that statistic that they set up at the beginning.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: And then we end the show.
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: And this is what I was saying a few episodes before, Sarah,
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: you weren't here for this, but it's really important for
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: doctors to be able to pick themselves back up after
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: something like this happens. And you know, it's also very
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: important that this happens to these young doctors at an
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: early time, so they do know how to set up
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: boundaries and do know how to set up balls to
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: help them be professional. It's tragic that it has to
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: be death that does it, but yeah, you know, to
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: lose someone you care about and then show up the
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: next day at that job, it's very difficult. I can't
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: I can't imagine it. I find it difficult to watch
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: and it's very difficult to experience.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: I would imagine.
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: And that was that, and that piece of It's so
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: cool that the show kind of owes that right after
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: with all, you know, Churt going back and introducing himself
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: to the patient, Jad taking the time to go be
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: on the grass, Elliott kind of figuring out how to
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: take charge. And that was kind of cool too. Johnny's
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: conversation with Elliott when he says, you made the right call,
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: you did, and she says, I know, and I don't.
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: I didn't remember that. And when I saw that, I,
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: you know, just sort of having her take that confident position.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that was really powerful. I was really powerful. I thought, Okay, listen, guys,
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: we did it.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: We did it.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: I'm so glad, Sarah we had you, because we wanted
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: to have you on this one because we all keep
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: saying this was a very special episode for all of us,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: and thank you for for coming on. And I hope
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: you know we're having fun doing this. I hope that
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: Donald and I both hope that you'll come as as
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: as many times as you're willing to and and rewatch
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: the show with us.
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: I loved it. It was so fun, so fun to do.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: So is that a yes?
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: Was that a yes? That was a very non chemical
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: very that is?
- 1:18:03Speaker 6: That is?
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: I'm in you? Just you can know where I am. Guys,
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: I'm not doing anything.
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: How do you say? How do you say? Goodbye? And Canadians?
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: I think it's goodbye? Wait? Is it something like? That's French?
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: That's well, you know there's a lot of them speak
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: French up there, Donald Bilingo country here, guys?
- 1:18:21Speaker 6: Is it?
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: Yes? On that note? Donald, if you'll lead us in song?
- 1:18:26Speaker 6: Uh?
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: Why god?
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: Donald?
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: Why can't I lead us in song?
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Sorry? You can lead us in song? We will now,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Donald Countison, please one two? I prefer when you count
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: down like DeBie.
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: Okay, you got big dreams?
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: You take the monologue?
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: This time? Fame costs and right here is where you
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: start paying the sweat.
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: By six.
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: Stories, I'm not sure we made.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: About a bunch of the story next.
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: All should know.
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: So Gadder Rado here, hop Gatherer rad you here, Hobbs Butch.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: We watch your Witz and and no
