- 0:31Hi everyone.
- 0:32Welcome back to the realtor who whines I'm Rachelle Neumeyer.
- 0:35I'm so happy you're here today with Becky from Mirabella.
- 0:38So Winery and Aria Newberg.
- 0:41We're like, okay. Yeah, we're kind of on the cusp in between, like, Newberg and Carlton actually.
- 0:46Literally on the line.
- 0:48Yeah, half of our property is Newberg and half of our property is Dundee.
- 0:53Oh, Dundee. Okay. Yeah.
- 0:54So thank you so much for having us.
- 0:56Cheers to you. Cheers.
- 1:01Oh, it's so good and refreshing.
- 1:03We're having bubbles today.
- 1:04For those of you that are listening and not watching, when you tell us a little bit about what we're drinking, this is our 2019 plunked in a bar.
- 1:12She is a method chef.
- 1:15And while so you know, we would we would say the thing if we were going to say the thing.
- 1:20Yeah, but we'll call it bubbles. Yeah.
- 1:22And she has a gold medal and I, I can't remember what her score was, but in the 90s.
- 1:30I always call my wine Sheen.
- 1:30Yeah I love it.
- 1:33Lovely things are feminine.
- 1:34Yes absolutely. And bubbles are that for sure.
- 1:37And we call our bubbles are the name of our bubbles is Reza Tura which means effortless elegance in Italian.
- 1:45Oh my gosh. You can say so many words that I cannot say.
- 1:50I'm sure I could just listen to you all day.
- 1:52I'm. I can't say that word.
- 1:52I can't say that word.
- 1:55How did you come up with the name for your winery?
- 2:00We literally we went to the diner downtown, with Google Translate over breakfast and thought, what are we?
- 2:09What do we want? This to look like? Yeah.
- 2:10And so we literally just pulled up. We wanted it to be Italian.
- 2:16And so we went through different descriptors that we liked.
- 2:21And it's a terrible business name.
- 2:23I mean phonetically it's mayor of vaguely.
- 2:26Oh so and it's and nobody can say it.
- 2:29Nobody can spell it.
- 2:31But it's so it is pretty when she says it.
- 2:34It sounds great when I say it, it sounds like I've had three bottles of wine and like, I know what I mean.
- 2:39Really?
- 2:39So it means like this or wonderful, I love that, I love that, what?
- 2:44Do you have an Italian background or do you just love all things Italian?
- 2:48We just love all things Italian.
- 2:50And we live in a very Tuscan, the top of our hill.
- 2:56It's just very Tuscan. Yeah.
- 2:58So absolutely, we are just embracing what we have.
- 3:02Did you and your husband have like a wine background or what, like led you down this journey?
- 3:08Sandy hills. Yeah, that's what happens to everyone.
- 3:12Come to me.
- 3:13Come to Dundee Hills, a regular person.
- 3:15Leave the wine owner. Leave.
- 3:19We totally do our properties.
- 3:21Is Dundee Hills friendly? Ava.
- 3:24And literally he said to me one time, too many sweet girls.
- 3:31Should we be doing wine and not trees?
- 3:33And then that, you know that spring day where it's been pouring and gray and horrible and then the next day the sun is out and daffodils and the birds.
- 3:44Oh yeah.
- 3:44Beautiful.
- 3:45And it was like yes, yeah, yeah let's do it. So the skies opened, the vines grew.
- 3:53What kind of trees did you have here before Doug first.
- 3:57Okay. Yeah, it was just in forest of Earl.
- 3:59So we cleared the land and planted, on the estate.
- 4:04We have Chardonnay and, of course, piano, because we're in piano country.
- 4:08Right. Yeah.
- 4:11Yeah.
- 4:12And and, did you hire a winemaker?
- 4:15Like, what was that whole process?
- 4:17Did we, had a connection to a winemaker, and, he got us started.
- 4:26We opened.
- 4:27We started making wine in 17.
- 4:29We officially opened in 2020.
- 4:31I was an aunt, and my husband is a mechanical engineer.
- 4:36We are serial entrepreneurs, as most entrepreneurs are.
- 4:43Yeah, right. Yeah.
- 4:44There's always the next project.
- 4:46Yeah, well, we either pass out because we're exhausted or we don't sleep because we have too much on our minds. Yeah, but, so we opened in 2020, as things have evolved this year, 24, I became the winemaker.
- 5:03I did some education, found a mentor, and how's that going?
- 5:11Oh, I can't wait for you to taste. Yeah.
- 5:14Me neither.
- 5:14I did not know that. That's fake news.
- 5:16Have you been telling people, or is that, like, kind of top secret that you're.
- 5:19Well, it's not top secret now.
- 5:21It's out in the world wide webs now.
- 5:23Yeah, I know, but before today.
- 5:27No we haven't we haven't really kept it secret.
- 5:30But, No, it's so fun.
- 5:34And so, we have of course, rosé and and I pulled the first of the first run, just one clone.
- 5:47And we made a white pino.
- 5:49And she's so good that this is a little bit of a Carmel apple pear thing going on.
- 5:57That sounds delicious.
- 5:58Oh it's so good for those I don't know like how do you.
- 6:02So if you know grapes red and then how do you make it a white.
- 6:06We took the first of the first run as we, crushed.
- 6:11And literally I just was so picky about where the color landed.
- 6:16And so, it is, it's not as golden white as this.
- 6:22It's got a little bit of a tint to it, but the skins are white.
- 6:24That's the color.
- 6:25And so we just took what we could without adding too much.
- 6:29And when will that be ready.
- 6:31Probably next month.
- 6:32Oh yeah. That's exciting.
- 6:33I thought you're going to say next year.
- 6:34And I was going to be like yeah the next one.
- 6:36I'm too excited next month.
- 6:37That's amazing. Yeah I love that.
- 6:40And then what about bubbles?
- 6:41How did you also like move from wine into bubbles?
- 6:46Our wine maker, he, he suggested it and he was learning.
- 6:52And so involved you not.
- 6:56Yeah, but I miss Lily Bollinger believes that bubbles should just be a part of life.
- 7:04Yeah, I she is. Me. Yes. Yeah.
- 7:07When you're happy, when you're sad, when you're angry, when you're eating, when you're not.
- 7:10When you're working, when you're celebrating. Yes.
- 7:12All of it.
- 7:13Well. And it's nice.
- 7:13You and I were talking about this earlier.
- 7:15We are in piano country, so a lot of times if you're doing a wine tasting or you're on a tour, you're going to get a lot of Pinot noirs, like all the different wineries you visit.
- 7:24So it's nice when you show up to a winery and there's other varieties on the menu, because you what did you call it earlier? Know?
- 7:31Blind. Yeah.
- 7:31Because yeah, they all start to taste the same after a while and you're just like, oh yeah, that's another good way.
- 7:36Okay. Okay.
- 7:37So it's fun to like mix it up.
- 7:39Yeah. So we have Chardonnay.
- 7:41And then of course Pino and, we actually have a cab as well, which not a lot of people are in here.
- 7:50Have cab. But I'll keep I'll keep doing bubbles this year.
- 7:56With the estate chardonnay.
- 7:57We'll we'll put it down as bubbles.
- 8:00What is the heart or why?
- 8:00I shouldn't say hard.
- 8:02What is the biggest difference between making wine and making bubbles?
- 8:05They just have to sit as long.
- 8:07How does it ferment?
- 8:08It's like, what's the difference?
- 8:10Yeah, well, we'll harvest a little earlier and then it kind of has a double ferment really.
- 8:15I mean, if we're going to just like, yeah, get into it and then it just kind of goes to bed in to rush and chill, just sit and wait for a while.
- 8:26Does it have to bubbles have to sit as long as a Pinot noir or is it short?
- 8:32Longer?
- 8:32Oh really? Yeah, it can sit longer.
- 8:34I have some, interests that we put down in 2022.
- 8:40That probably towards the end of this year, beginning of next will disgorge.
- 8:46Okay.
- 8:47And what, vines do you have outside, like, whether you're state vines, Chardonnay and Pino, and then where do you get your other grapes from?
- 8:57Do you sort of secret sauce?
- 8:58Yeah, yeah.
- 8:59We would sauce the, the cap and things.
- 9:02Know cheese sauce out of Oregon or Washington.
- 9:05Oh always Oregon. Where I know.
- 9:08But hey there are Oregon.
- 9:10We can't drinkers we are.
- 9:13Oregon has great wine, but so finicky about where things come from.
- 9:17There's some great grapes in California and Washington too, though.
- 9:20But they are.
- 9:22They can be a little judgy.
- 9:24They can be a little touchy, especially southern.
- 9:27I, I don't know about it.
- 9:29I'm like, let's just be Oregon and be who we are.
- 9:31So I am all about that.
- 9:32But like my cab is Walla Walla from the Oregon side.
- 9:36Oh really.
- 9:36Yeah. The yeah the cab.
- 9:39Well Walla Walla has really great cab grapes.
- 9:42I feel like it's just the sunshine that they get and the soil there, they just really produce some beautiful grapes out that way.
- 9:48That's I was saying to like I part of the reason I love wine, it's not just the wine itself.
- 9:53I always love supporting Oregon agriculture.
- 9:55Like I look at it as I'm also supporting farmers and things.
- 9:58Not just like like when I buy a wine that's locally made.
- 10:02I think I'm also supporting the Oregon farmer that helps produce it, even if they're not the winemaker in the vineyard at 6:00 this morning.
- 10:09Yeah.
- 10:10Oh my gosh. Yeah.
- 10:11So that's not for me.
- 10:16That's a I actually I used to in my previous life I was a social media marketer for larger corporations.
- 10:22But one of my, companies I worked for was local farmers.
- 10:27And so I'd meet with farmers and they'd be like, well, what time do you want to meet?
- 10:31And I was like, oh, I don't know, like more like 9 or 10.
- 10:33And they're like, no, how about six?
- 10:35I was like, no, I'm in marketing.
- 10:38I got into marketing because I don't get up at the sun.
- 10:42That's not my thing.
- 10:43I respect you a time, but that's not me.
- 10:45And they just be like, okay, well, that's like the day's half over for meeting at ten.
- 10:50Right place in in the other business out there, tween eight and nine, I'm like, dude, yeah.
- 10:58You're like, I've been working for three hours.
- 11:00It's so funny.
- 11:02What other business since you referenced it, do you want to talk about it at all?
- 11:05My husband's an mechanical engineer.
- 11:07So we have a machine shop. Fab shop.
- 11:11His specialty is designing turnkey machines.
- 11:15So if you need a machine to pick this up, a robot, he can get the robot to pick this up.
- 11:19Turn it, move it.
- 11:22That's right. Anything like that. Yeah.
- 11:25What about like, when you do harvest and stuff?
- 11:27Time to figure out a machine that will pick the grapes.
- 11:31You don't have to do it by hand.
- 11:32We talked about that at notion a little of that time chat.
- 11:38That's the problem I mean with our heels.
- 11:41So when the grapes are delicate I've talked about this at some other winemakers like it's not like some of the harvest where you can use a machine to scoop it up and stuff because that'll damage the grapes.
- 11:51So you really have to like, you know, is, a princess.
- 11:55She's so delicate. Princess piano. That.
- 12:00But, yeah.
- 12:01Really delicate. They bruises.
- 12:02If you lose a lot of the flavor and everything, if they get damaged.
- 12:07How many times you guys do about a year.
- 12:11This year we brought in just over 20.
- 12:13Okay.
- 12:14And how many cases does that make? Normally.
- 12:17Oh, golly. I'm sorry. Yeah, I don't know.
- 12:20I mean, I think it's about 140 cases a ton.
- 12:23Okay.
- 12:24So, and then we sell some bulk or, or Shiners Club to consumer, I mean, all the things.
- 12:34Yeah.
- 12:35And you have the tasting room, obviously, if you're watching or sitting in the tasting room today, talk a little bit about the tasting room vibe and like what your goal was, what the tasting room.
- 12:46It's been really fun.
- 12:48It's been really fun to have this evolve.
- 12:50And so we have you kind of can't tell from where we're sitting, but we have art from four different artists on the walls right now and around actually.
- 13:01So that's kind of fun.
- 13:03And we, we love art and life music.
- 13:08And so, we do paint and sips once a month, and there's all kinds of different classes throughout the course of the season.
- 13:17And then, music this year we're going to take you back to having music just monthly or bi monthly, which is also kind of nice.
- 13:27And then we have seating outside for about 60.
- 13:30Yeah.
- 13:31And the grounds to walk, we have over $500 going in.
- 13:39Oh my goodness, I have a thousand 1200 plants starts coming next week.
- 13:45Oh my gosh.
- 13:46So so yeah, the my boys are just like yay.
- 13:54For the flowers.
- 13:55Oh beautiful.
- 13:57Yeah they're in the summer.
- 13:58And I feel like to how do you stand out.
- 14:02How do you how do you get to be the one place or one of the chosen places that somebody wants to visit?
- 14:09And especially here because there's so many, there's so many.
- 14:12So social media.
- 14:15So you kind of have to be Instagrammable.
- 14:18Absolutely.
- 14:19And so again, I feel like art and flowers are a way to do that.
- 14:27Absolutely.
- 14:28And so flowers, vines and bubbles.
- 14:31Yeah.
- 14:32That's. Yeah, that's how I love it.
- 14:35I'm all about it.
- 14:36Yeah.
- 14:37Talk a little bit about the Wine Club and like what your wine club is and what you offer.
- 14:42We have three tiers.
- 14:44We do four shipments a month a year.
- 14:49Sorry. Yeah.
- 14:49I was like, hey, I'm in.
- 14:51Those are some drinkers.
- 14:54Yeah.
- 14:55Four shipments a year.
- 14:55And how many bottles are in each?
- 14:58But we do two, 4 or 6 per shipment and then let anybody choose.
- 15:04You know, I but we're it's, it's really kind of nice to be small enough where I can just call you up and say, Michelle, this is what we're offering, or.
- 15:13Yeah, it'll be on the website.
- 15:14Of course, this is what we're offering.
- 15:16Or you can change it to be whatever you want.
- 15:19So I appreciate being able to do that as well.
- 15:22Yeah.
- 15:23And then when people come to pick up their wines, do you do like any clean events or is it just come that quarter both ends.
- 15:32Yeah. Both ends.
- 15:33Sometimes we do like with the pickup party, with the music and the whole fun thing.
- 15:38And then other times, it's just, come pick it up and have a quiet tasting or little chat often, if there's an event or, just that special tastings.
- 15:53Yeah. Often I'll bake.
- 15:54I always have food or something to go with it.
- 15:57And then a lot of times I bake something that I wanted to smell nice and fresh and warm, and we'll just, like, welcoming.
- 16:05Yeah. Like very hostess and love that.
- 16:08What is something that people would be surprised about with owning a winery or a tasting room?
- 16:14I know I was like, give me the juice.
- 16:18I want all the dirty details.
- 16:21It's it's so fun.
- 16:23And it it is, it's my joy to get to have this business.
- 16:30And it's a joy to get to do tastings and all that.
- 16:34And it's I just really love that.
- 16:38When I did, I did my job right.
- 16:41When people are able to sit outside in the summer and they're like, oh, I just like your life.
- 16:48Yeah, you're like, okay.
- 16:49And behind the scenes in my life.
- 16:52I just want the dishes done. Oh for sure.
- 16:55Yeah. The little stuff just hired.
- 16:58Did I send out that email I never push send.
- 17:01Did I do this.
- 17:02I need to be out in production and yeah.
- 17:06So it's I mean there's so many so many hats to juggle.
- 17:11To get to the point of that bottle right out the door.
- 17:15Absolutely. Yeah.
- 17:16Can people order your wine online.
- 17:18Like do you ship out of state.
- 17:20We do, we do.
- 17:21And we are currently swapping swapping the website over so it'll be more efficient.
- 17:27Okay. And so I'm really happy about that.
- 17:29So that's probably going to take a couple of weeks.
- 17:31But still yes that's awesome.
- 17:34Yeah.
- 17:35And some people have I know some of the wineries have like restrictions and shipping up to certain states.
- 17:40Do you have any restrictions or can you ship everywhere?
- 17:43Ship everywhere. Okay, I like that.
- 17:46That's great.
- 17:47What what is something you wish you knew before you got into the wine business?
- 17:52The same thing.
- 17:53You're like the same damn hats.
- 17:54Or shall I just told you about my 22 hats?
- 17:57It's the same thing, right?
- 17:59I'm just tired.
- 18:00Yeah, I'm not saying what I think, but I keep learning more and more.
- 18:07Is that wine is magic.
- 18:10I love that.
- 18:13But this year I have the same crew, the same schedule for, for the vineyard by same team will be here to help me with production.
- 18:26And yet the weather you know is will totally change the bottle that we put out for 25 is vintage and it's just magic.
- 18:38And then how wine will change with those two cheeses.
- 18:45And how it makes you feel.
- 18:47And suddenly over the course of a tasting I love over the course of the tasting when we chat just enough that like when you leave people often will hug me and they're like oh thank you so much.
- 19:00Yeah.
- 19:00And it's like because you like have them because wine is magic.
- 19:04Yeah. Wine is just magic.
- 19:06And I love learning more and more about that.
- 19:10I believe that too, that I was telling you, part of the reason I wanted to do this podcast with wine is I just feel like it's like building community and like, sharing a glass of wine is like sharing that piece of community and that camaraderie.
- 19:23And then of course, if you don't drink wine, that's okay too.
- 19:26You're welcome.
- 19:26There's a spot at the table for you too, but it's just a nice way.
- 19:29It's like breaking bread almost, you know, it's just.
- 19:31But it really is. Yeah.
- 19:33Just a little bit changes things and it it provides a different bond. And man, I just love it.
- 19:41I do just love it so much.
- 19:43Well, and the more bubbles you drink, the more secrets come out.
- 19:46That's the best part to say.
- 19:48Bubbles are a way of life.
- 19:51What have you learned from the farming side of it?
- 19:54Because did you have any kind of farming background besides the trees at all?
- 19:58We did.
- 19:59Both of us actually grew up on farm.
- 20:01Okay, well that's helpful.
- 20:01That's obvious. Yeah. Right. Yeah.
- 20:04The helpful part of that is you think we would have known better, but at least it's not livestock because.
- 20:11Oh, well, I actually really have like I am actively campaigning to get some sheep and chickens.
- 20:21Well, sheep and chickens are great because they can also do a little bit self-contained, like they can eat a little bit on their own.
- 20:27Like you can still go on vacation and have sheep and chickens, but if you run like a dairy farm or something says how?
- 20:32What are you going to do?
- 20:33How are they going to feed him like I got?
- 20:35Please?
- 20:36Yeah, yeah, I've got a thing.
- 20:40Yeah.
- 20:40But I so I, I miss my livestock so much.
- 20:44Yeah.
- 20:44But I ran anybody by summer.
- 20:48You'll see that my farmer's heart is with it.
- 20:52How many flower. And.
- 20:53Oh for sure.
- 20:54Gardens are just silly. Yeah.
- 20:57But then farming is we are at the mercy of the Almighty and the weather and so.
- 21:06Right.
- 21:06You know, as the buds come out on the vines, you start praying that there will be no thunderstorm storms to damage those baby like, yeah.
- 21:16So I've, I've learned to pay attention to that kind of thing.
- 21:21And, I've started journaling to keep track of what the weather looks like so that I can compare from year to year.
- 21:29Yeah. It's so much.
- 21:31Yeah I love it, but it's so much for sure.
- 21:34One, I don't think a lot of people think about that, that you would be paying attention to that.
- 21:38But it really does impact the grapes a ton which impacts the wine completely.
- 21:43Yeah. It could totally change the flavor.
- 21:45Everything about it.
- 21:47And sometimes I have heard and correct me if I'm wrong, like sometimes you'll harvest early or harvest late, depending on the size of the grapes.
- 21:54Like if you're like, oh, they kind of need someone's like cooking.
- 21:57Like they just need a little bit longer.
- 21:58Yeah, exactly. Yeah. The magic of if I wait, they're ready on Tuesday.
- 22:04But if I wait until Friday.
- 22:06Yeah, that just that little bit can actually change it.
- 22:09Yeah I started watching we farm almost seven acres behind us as well.
- 22:16And so man I started walking.
- 22:18I just well fit with that by the end of the season last year because that hill is serious.
- 22:24Yeah.
- 22:24But yeah.
- 22:26So I, I started watching it regularly to watch them as they developed and to check the sugars and.
- 22:33Yeah.
- 22:35And then they're like just now that you've been doing it for a while, can you tell with your eye like oh we should harvest or is there like a science behind it.
- 22:45So it's yeah, yeah.
- 22:46Can you like I know I check the sugars in the assets and.
- 22:51Yeah.
- 22:51And make sure the levels are all where you want them to be.

- 23:16What is your thoughts and feelings behind that.
- 23:18Like some people are telling me that it's not cost prohibitive to Cork, but then others are like.
- 23:24Like the romance of opening a bottle that's called a cork.
- 23:27I can't help it.
- 23:29I like a last year we actually corked our rosé.
- 23:36Oh really.
- 23:36And I mean it's a just gifts a little.
- 23:39Oh controversial might be a big word for that.
- 23:42Yeah.
- 23:43But it's like you want to be able to take your rosé at a picnic.
- 23:45Right.
- 23:45But still just throw the bottle opener in.
- 23:50Yeah, I have a wine key.
- 23:51And like, every purse, my work backpack, my backpack.
- 23:55I know I found, you know, my purse.

- 24:04I always say TSA.
- 24:05TSA, please don't take it.
- 24:07Yeah, you're right and I but I just the sound of the cork leaves the bottle and I, I always leave the cork for my people because I feel like it matters.
