[upbeat rock music] Welcome back to the program, ladies and gentlemen.
• 0:20
[laughs] I- Merry New Year. I mean- Happy New Year. Hello again. It's, it's, it's the 2024 now. Yeah. It is. New juice, beef jerky? Freshly. We didn't, uh, we didn't do a show there last week.
• 0:33
Did you listen to the Chewie show? No, I think I totally forgot to. Oh. Oh, shit. I will. Probably ought to give that hour and 10 minutes of- How does he-... podcasting- Does he slam you a lot? [laughs] No, I don't know.
• 0:45
Do you make fun of my- I've gotten through about three-quarters of it so far... my bike, Chewie? [laughs] We'll get more Chewie shows coming up. We, we talked about some stuff he has, uh, planned for the new year.
• 0:54
So this is Full Spectrum Cycling, folks. Yep. This is show number 235. We got, uh, JK to my right. Hi, everybody. Tony there wearing the Guitar Smasher WMSC T-shirt. I've, uh- Long, long sleeve- Good to see...
• 1:11
and thick as- Heck... heck. It is really warm. It looks like you shrunk- Heck, indeed... it, it looks like you shrunk my sweatshirt and took off the h- the hood. Oh, I know. And, and, and- I saw your hood yesterday...
• 1:19
and, and, and fused it [laughs] and fused the zipper away. Um, I, I've added a- I'm confused... uh, I've added another New Year's resolution. This is gonna be a hard one. Give MSC $2,000 this year?
• 1:30
[laughs] No, I'll probably do that anyway. No. [laughs] Wear something WMSC every day. Oh. Wow. Do you have, like, a, uh, a, an armband or- Uh, oh, yeah... you know- I got a bandana.
• 1:39
Some default- Some sort of hat or- You know, several hoodies... pantaloons. Um, I have three Eric Von Munz [laughs] vampire shirts. Hey, speaking of Eric Von Munz, WSM- uh, uh, uh, J- Yeah, there you have it...
• 1:51
DJ extraordinaire. [laughs] Guess whose house he landed on the doorstep of? Hmm? Well, he had some Lego parts for someone. Hmm. So he delivered them over to Dave Munz's [laughs] house. Oh, God. Oh.
• 2:07
[laughs] I did not know that Von Munz was into the Lego- Oh... as much as he is. Oh, is he? I did not know- Oh, yeah... that either. Oh, yeah. Oh. Apparently so.
• 2:14
And Dave had some, some vinyl lying around which he hel- uh, Von Munz helped himself to a couple and was like, "How much do you want?" Dave's like, "Oh, no, no, don't worry."
• 2:23
Von Munz was like, "Well, you've got credit at the Lego store. No problem." [laughs] So EVM has a, uh- A Lego phase... he has a, he has a hidden side that we don't- Interesting... don't often see.
• 2:34
It's amazing how many people I find have a Lego side. Yeah. Here's something I learned today about Lego, gonna be the Lego portion of the show, folks. Guess so. That's right. Just like that.
• 2:42
So you know your Pinewood Derby track you got when you're a Cub Scout, you know? Shit yeah. Four lanes of racing goodness? Yeah. They now have a class that you can do Legos with. Come on. They make a special Lego
• 2:54
brick that has wheels on it that are the same width as a Pinewood Derby car. Nice.
• 2:59
I think it's a great idea, and matter of fact, it's such a great idea that I wanna get a Pinewood Derby track [laughs] in the other room so we can run races once a month or something.
• 3:07
But I think the Lego class would probably- Count-... outdo the Pinewood- Count Daniel in. Right on. He'd be here instantly. [laughs] Mr. Lego. I wanna find a used one somewhere.
• 3:17
Anybody got a line on a, a good used four-lane BSA type- Track... uh, Pinewood Derby track? I'm, I'm interested. New ones are spendy. Are they?
• 3:27
Yeah, between, like, a grand and two grand, depending on how elaborate you wanna get and what you wanna have 'em made out of. I believe making them shouldn't be that hard, though. I wouldn't think so.
• 3:37
I do not have a table saw currently, but I could probably throw a stone and hit one from here. I have one. I was a Duplo kid. Oh, those are the bigger blocks. Yeah.
• 3:48
Yeah, those- They were never fused with my Lego friends. I was shunned. I was an outcast. [laughs] Mm-hmm. And that's where we're at today. Yeah. The hidden side. Right on. [laughs] No. So we did not do a show last week.
• 3:59
I think I mentioned that before. Oh, we, we skipped that? So what that makes, 13 weeks we slacked off last year. Wow, we were slacking. Right? We did 39 shows last year. Well, we moved three times.
• 4:08
Well, once a month-ish. Yeah. So- And a leap month... there was a couple of, a coup- a couple of skipped weeks there in the move period. Uh, yeah, you know, 39 shows, not bad I say. What was that?
• 4:23
Was it- I- What- You blooped. I got some sort of a note from- Oh, some sort of note... from, from the guy, another one of my New Year's resolutions, guy by the name of Sam that I promised I'd be nice to all year.
• 4:33
[laughs] So, it's a good way to keep your body healthy. [laughs] So he doesn't beat me up? Right. Right. Exactly. So, uh, we did have, uh, the Christmas holiday in there between now and the last show.
• 4:48
Did- Yeah, we did... does anybody wanna, does anybody wanna look at my Meat Puppets, uh, album? Ah, I see. That we, that we mentioned during Record Store Day that I'm like, "Hmm." Oh.
• 4:57
I made that suggestion, and it showed up. The, the one behind it's a Husker Du too. You know? Also good. Right? So yeah, yeah. They were, had... Uh, and I got an excel- so there's some things I wouldn't buy for myself.
• 5:10
I'm not saying I wouldn't buy a, an album. I would. If it's something I liked, I would buy it for sure, and what those two would have been a couple of them I would consider for sure.
• 5:20
But I got this book on the history of, uh, AMA super bike racing, motorcycle race, engine cycle racing as- Yeah... as you may call it now. Engines. Well, yeah.
• 5:31
In the, uh, like, from the late '70s through the mid to late '80s, which is when I was kinda active in that my own self. And it's a $90 book with autographs and all sorts of stuff. Oh, wow.
• 5:42
And I'm like, "I would probably never buy it for myself," but I got it for Christmas, and that kicks major ass. I bet. Very cool. I just, I, I love presents that I would not normally do but I really want.
• 5:53
It's, I also like that route. Yeah. Yeah. [laughs] So I don't know, what did Santa, what did Santa Kleese bring you guys? The knobby knees. [laughs] No, I- [laughs] The, the Mr. Santa Kleese. Uh, these pantaloons...
• 6:06
that are kind of, uh, the same thing as ones I had before, with the cool fleece on the inside- Oh, nice... that makes it feel like you're walking around in your house pants- I do... out in the world.
• 6:17
I got- So it was a nice little difference in that. And then I had bought, um, a Spectre board game for myself [laughs] like on Black Friday that I- And you could just put it under the tree and say- Yeah, essentially...
• 6:30
"From"- Just kinda moved it around with whatever- "From"-... like gifts were going around, like, "Oh yeah, and here's, yeah" From me to me. From me to me. I still haven't even opened it and read the instructions yet.
• 6:39
Wow. But that's that discipline I tell you. Now the new year, I'll tear into it. It's a board game? Yeah, about- Do you get to-... 007... play it by yourself? [laughs] No, it's two or more. Well, that was the thing.
• 6:51
I, I got, I got, I, [laughs] I picked up a Goonies Never Say Die game, a board game, and I thought it was gonna be killer, you know, so I could revisit the old Goonie ride, rest in peace. RIP Goonie ride. Yeah.
• 7:05
And, uh, [laughs] it was just like a, a minor Dungeons & Dragons game- Ah... after a bit. It was like, wait a minute, this is not what I remember. I know this.
• 7:15
Well, [laughs] I, I know this, and I know I, I- I don't like this... I can't recruit people to get into this with me. Because you don't wanna subject them to the- Oh, the storytelling... the pain? It's all storytelling.
• 7:27
Sure. That's all it is, and nobody's gonna s- I got a-... put, put up for that... got a fresh pair of really, really heavy weight long underwear. Yeah. You wearing them now? They rubbing all up- I am. I am...
• 7:37
on your armor? I am, and they're called Cuddle Duds. Ah, nice. Cuddle Duds. Does it all the havoc? Cuddle Duds is still in business.
• 7:43
I remember my daugh- my sisters getting them as a kid, and my daughter got a pair, and then lo and behold, they're like the super heaviest weight. They're, they're fantastic. Are they made out of cotton or poly?
• 7:54
No, they're poly. Okay. This is definitely a high-tech- No wool?... fabric. No wool? Uh, I haven't looked, but I don't think so. Love wool. They're pretty warm. I prefer wool, for sure. Well, awesome.
• 8:04
So that's, uh, that's Christmas for you, folks. What other- We don't have to dwell on it too much, but- Nah, yeah, we're all- Yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh, we do have to mention our New Year's Day ride.
• 8:13
Oh, engine cycles everywhere. The tradition was relived. Yes. And it was 30 degrees. That's what they were claiming. Sure. Boy, howdy, did it feel colder than that.
• 8:27
[laughs] There was a little- And there wasn't that much of a wind even. It was a mild breeze. Yeah, I don't know. It just seemed... It's one of those deals- Persistent...
• 8:34
it's one of those deals where if it's colder than that, I know it's gonna be really cold, so I'm gonna- So you're prepared for it... I'm gonna kinda, yeah, dress. I thought I was pretty well-prepared for this.
• 8:46
Um- I'm glad I brought a whole lot extra. I- I'm glad I have an electric bike that can carry a ton of shit. Yeah. Well, you can throw- 'Cause I-... an extra coat in there too...
• 8:52
I brought a bunch of stuff, which one thing I did not bring was an extra coat. Yeah, hello. I did bring gloves, though, with liners that fit- [coughs]... hand warmers.
• 9:00
Well, that was one of my banes of existence partially was the glove thing. I have the Pearl iZumi winter gloves, which, you know, whatever, they're supposed to be warm. But not only were they not that warm,
• 9:14
but they have this weird cuff on them, and a lot of my clothes are cycling clothes. I just wear cycling clothes. Right. And a lot of them have, as this shirt I'm wearing does, the stupid- They're thumb-y...
• 9:25
the stupid thumb hole. Yeah, those are weird. Right? That would bug me. Right? Which is fine if you have one, but if you have, like, a couple layers on, and these things are usually extra long, right?
• 9:34
So you don't, you know, whatever. All that stuff was bunching up right where that stupid cuff is- Letting the air right in... and it just couldn't get any sealing going on at all.
• 9:43
[laughs] And it was super irritating because the Louis Garneau lobster claws I have have a wicked nice big cuff that would go over the outside of everything. Right.
• 9:51
But all that bunching up shit, that just pissed me off, and it makes me think, "I really don't need to wear cycling tops. I need just to wear good, you know, smart wool or whatever- Right...
• 10:01
and not get into this stupid thumb hole crap." [laughs] 'Cause I think they make those dumb Pearl iZumi gloves for people that wear kits, not people- Right... that wear normal winter clothes, so.
• 10:13
We, we saw quite a few kits out there, all those guys on trikes. Right. Recumbent trikes. That was pretty entertaining. Did you notice my coat? No. It's resurrected. It's...
• 10:23
I, I bought two of them when GoLite was still in business 'cause I liked the coat so much. Oh. And then both of the zippers, you could, you'd zip it up, and then the thing would just pop open. Like, you- [laughs]...
• 10:32
all the teeth would not be working. [laughs] Want to. Well, I took it, I took it to our local, uh, North, is it North Shore Cleaners on Murray over there? Mm-hmm. Uh, yeah. Yeah. And they, the lovely man- North Point.
• 10:44
North Point, I think. Yeah. North Point Cleaners. And I'm like, "Can you replace these zippers?" He's like, "Eh, you don't need zippers. You just need the slide." I'm like, "Huh? Just the actual mo-" Shut the- "...
• 10:54
the movie part." And he goes, "Oh yeah, that'll fix that." He, I mean, he's like, "15 bucks a piece or something." I'm like, "Do it." And I got... So now I basically have two new coats that work properly.
• 11:03
Yeah, that happened with one of mine. Is this the one by, over by St. Peter Paul's? Yes. Well, I'm taking my jacket there.
• 11:09
[laughs] Yeah, if you have one, and that, it's like that was the problem that solved on both of the coats. And I'm like, "That's my favorite. I wear them all the time. It's my favorite."
• 11:18
I might resurrect my Showers Pass jacket. Possibly. If it's, if it's just a deal where you zip it up, and then it's up there, and then it pops open, that may do the job.
• 11:27
Yeah, mine starts as on, on, pop open almost instantly when zipping. Yeah, I think what happens is inside of the slide itself, it wears away, and it doesn't do its job anymore apparently.
• 11:36
But I was like, "Yes, that is worth the money. Thank you very much." Is it a typical YYK zipper? Yeah. YKK or whatever? Yeah, you can look at it. It's right over there. Nice. 'Cause I wore it today. You know why?
• 11:45
'Cause it's fixed. [laughs] Nice. So- Toasty... so I was wearing that yesterday, and whatever. Anyway, that's the whole thing about the- Yesterday in non-internet time. Yesterday as in- New Year's Day...
• 11:56
New Year's Day, which would be several da- whatever. That was, that was an inter- I'm, I'm, I'm losing my ability to think in Internet time [laughs] anymore. Ah. We have played that out pretty long.
• 12:05
Well, yeah, com- coming out of the holiday wash, I was like think- yeah, it was After that was Monday all day until it wasn't Monday, and it was like, "Hey, show tonight?" [laughs] It's like, "Oh, yeah."
• 12:18
[laughs] Speaking of that, I, uh, I was invited to the 20-year anniversary party for The Illuminati. Ah. And it was last Wednesday at the Engine House number five. Is that what it's called over there on National?
• 12:35
It's now closed. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Closed, like, right after we were there. Recently closed.
• 12:39
So we go there, and I, I walk up to the counter, 'cause it's supposed to be this big- That's where Obama ate when he was in town. Oh, was it? Eh, why? Um. [laughs] Well, it's... I, I've been there. It's a good place.
• 12:47
It's okay. Yeah. It's okay. It's, it's a good place- So-... for a lot of people, basically... right. I roll in, Molly and I. I'm like, walk up to the guy at the counter.
• 12:55
I'm like, "Yeah, I'm here for the Illuminati anniversary party." And the guy looks at me and just starts laughing. And I'm like, "No, there is an, a 20-year anniversary for a company called The Illuminati here today."
• 13:08
And he's like, "Uh, who's on the reservation?" [laughs] So it turns out DeNardo thought it was Tuesday instead of the Wednesday it was supposed to be.
• 13:19
So his assistant calls DeNardo and is like, "Where the flying fuck are you, dude?" And he's like, "Oh, shit, it's Wednesday. I'll be right there." [laughs] So he missed his own 20th anniversary to The Illuminati.
• 13:31
There we go. At least for part of the day. [laughs] What a hoser. He's a d- [laughs] He's, he's out there. Oh, man. Well, I wanna still ch- Mm... chat about the New Year's Day ride a little bit- Yeah, that was fun...
• 13:44
because- When you were speaking of the storage on your 'lectric bicycle, you had a- Your air gun, your weird, your weird air gun- Yeah... came into play. It did. Tell us how that made somebody's life better.
• 13:57
Well, I, you know, I'm, I'm gonna fully admit I'm in IT because I'm lazy, and, uh, you know, running a hand pump to inflate a, even for my case, a three-inch-wide tire can suck.
• 14:09
And someone needed a pump, so I'm like, "Oh, I can take care of that. I need to put air in my tires anyway." So I get this thing out and I start using it. It's my Ryobi 18 volt
• 14:20
$20 purchase, I think, and it, it inflates a tire way more easily than anything else. Did you already have the battery, or did it come with it? Uh, I bought the battery separate. Right. It, it was tool only for 20 bucks.
• 14:33
Well, still, it's a good deal. Um, but still, it's a good deal. Two amp battery in it lasts a long time. So I end up- I've seen you haul that around on more than one occasion. It fits in a backpack easy.
• 14:41
Yeah, it, it, it helped me on one ride that we did not- Yeah, when you had a flat-... not that long ago... on the way to see Bob Mould. Yeah, that was changing tubes and all this. Yeah.
• 14:48
This particular instance was a completely flat tire that didn't have a hole in it. Right. Oh.
• 14:53
[laughs] Yeah, this guy, he, uh, accidentally inflated his tire and then screwed his valve cap back on, but it was a Presta, and he totally re-deflated his tire.
• 15:01
Right, 'cause when he, 'cause he left it out, and he- Mm-hmm... and he, not only sh- do you need to flick those stupid things, but when you put the cap on, it actually pushes it- You screw it down.
• 15:09
It pushes air back out... that's why I put it... So- And he had a five-inch tire. Right. And why doesn't, why do fat bikes have Presta valves? Uh, that is dumb. Why don't they? That is marketing. There is no reason.
• 15:18
A Schrader's a much better low pressure valve than a- Than-... a Presta valve any day, and there's no physical reason why you need to have a narrow valve on a fat bike rim.
• 15:27
Interestingly enough, though- I'm gonna now drill out all of my rims. Maybe, right? Why not? But, but the stupid thing is all the tubes that are light and nice are all Presta valve. Are Presta. It's fr- it's ridiculous.
• 15:36
I, I was surprised to see, I don't know where I was- Crumudgeony here...
• 15:39
oh, I was getting fuel for my car, um, which happens, like, once every four months, and I saw a air machine, you know, like a Get Air, that took credit cards. Yeah. Nice.
• 15:50
I'm like, holy crap, you have to swipe a card- Age of wonder... to inflate your tires. When you can sell air, buddy, you're- You're, you're rich... you're, you're making big fat stacks.
• 16:01
I'm just gonna start selling bottles of air from different parts of the world. Perry Air. [laughs] I'm pretty sure there must already be out there many of those. So folks- Millbrook...
• 16:12
don't mess with your stupid Presta valve. Make sure that you at least w- wiggle it and then screw it back down. Right. Or you end up with a flat tire, and you probably won't have a Tony with a Ryobi- Electric...
• 16:23
electric pump, which did it- With a digital gauge... which did the five-inch tire up to whatever he wanted. I put- 18 pounds... 18 PSI. Probably took three, four minutes. About that, I'd say.
• 16:33
Yeah, it did it- It did it well... it did not take long. It did it much faster than someone with a hand pump.
• 16:37
[laughs] Well, I've, I, and I've never used them, but I've seen them that are approximately the size of this remote control unit- Right, Ryobi's got one now... that apparent- that apparently can also inflate tires.
• 16:46
Mm-hmm. And that seems like it might just be- Right, Ryobi has one that's USB-C rechargeable. It's a really cool little device. I asked for it from Santa, but Santa hates me. Santa, well, yeah.
• 16:56
But Dave Zwart was like, "Oh." Dave who? Dave what? Dave Zwart. Dave Zwart. [laughs] Yeah, he's going, "Oh," reluctantly, "Oh, it does come in handy." [laughs] Perks of the starting guy. Oh, with me? Yeah.
• 17:07
He's like, "Oh, I always rip on him for it. He always has the Chauvin." [laughs] And it works. Oh, the thing? Yep. So there's, so there's obviously- That was great...
• 17:15
Bubba wasn't on the ride, so there's a new guy that ruins the ride with flat tires. [laughs] So I don't know. I didn't get the- I forget his name. Think he's ridden with Sam before. Uh, that is not Floyd.
• 17:26
Oh, okay, different guy. That was not Floyd. But I think he works at Harley with Dave who? Dave what? Dave Zwart. Ah, gotcha.
• 17:33
Uh, so that New Year's Day ride, we started out at Daily Bird, where the Motards were all gathered. Vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom. So they, it was a- It was really cool...
• 17:43
it was a warm-ish day for them, too, and there was, uh, I bet there were 50. [laughs] I'm guessing there was 50 at least.
• 17:49
Yeah, yeah, 'cause I have a picture which I'll post in the show notes, uh, of everybody standing in front of the Bird before they took off.
• 17:57
But yeah, all sorts of bikes, including several of the Sur Ron/whatever XXX BMX whatever whatever electric motorcycles- Oh, my God... which are majorly cool. They're unbelievable.
• 18:11
And the silly, the silly gentlemen that ride them are very tricksy. I mean- They do lots of trickses... everybody's got their wheelie kids. They have their wheelie kids. Yeah.
• 18:20
The weird, [laughs] the weirdest part about that is when you walk up to that Sur-Ron is how narrow it is. Yeah. It's a really tiny bike, or engine cycle. Right. Mo- Mo- motorcycle. Motorcycle [laughs] Motorcycle.
• 18:32
That's it. [laughs] It's a motorcycle. But the kid got on... The first guy that got on one and instantly pulled a wheelie and put his rear hand and, like, slapped the ground, pull... I'm like, "Did that just happen?"
• 18:45
That was just... I mean, it was instantaneous. And I do understand, I have electric bikes. I understand how torque is instant on an electric motor, but wow. Yeah. These were so freaking cool.
• 18:56
[laughs] Speaking of torque and electric motors, have you seen the new zero to 60 fastest time ever? [laughs] No. I... It's some college, I think, in Austria- 1.5?... or somewhere. No.
• 19:07
Under one second, like.96 something or something. It's got- Zero to 60? Yeah. It's got four 322 horsepower motors, and it's- it's driven... It's, uh, the woman that drives it is, like, 90 pounds.
• 19:20
The whole thing weighs under 400 pounds. [laughs] It's three, three and a half Gs plus on just acceleration. Oh, my God. So that's super fast. That is super fast.
• 19:31
Yeah, so your 1.5 lasted for a good year, 1.4 or two years- Yeah... somewhere in there. Now you're sub- But, yeah, I-... one second. Yeah. I just saw it today on the interwebs.
• 19:40
At what point does your, like, blood just drain out of you? I don't know. I mean- [laughs] You could- It certainly... That's why they have the fancy suits in the jet fighter airplanes- Apparently...
• 19:49
is to push all the blood to your brain- Right... so you don't pass out and die. I- I heard that jet fighters never die. Die. Fighters never die. I got something for JK. Well, let's, uh, we're gonna... Where's my thing?
• 20:01
Here's the deal. My butthole, my surfers, butthole. We got to the top of this hill in less than one second with that electric- Wee. Wherever we-... uh, whatever that thing was called... four motor electric. So, uh,
• 20:12
fortunately there was, uh, still all day IPA in the fridge, which is what Tony and I are having. I don't know why y- yours was so pleasant. I got about 10 ounces out of that. Well, mine was perfect.
• 20:21
[laughs] That happened last time too, I think. You mean they just don't like you. Apparently. You know I don't believe in politics. But, uh, they're hanging out with my phone.
• 20:29
[laughs] I happened to see this on the old SingleTracks website is their, um, delicious non-alcoholic beers to get you through Dry January, or in Michael's case, the rest of his life. Yes, forever and ever. So there's...
• 20:41
So here's some that are on there, JK, and let me know if you've had any of them and, uh, what you thought of them. Athletic Brewing's Free Wave Hazy IPA. Yes. That's okay. That's pretty good.
• 20:51
That's, that's the one that's okay. And that's the one that's widely available- Right on... most of the time. And the Lagunitas IPNA? Very good. Very good. But can you find- If you can find it. [laughs] You...
• 21:02
I found out you can only get it in bottles now. The IPNA? It used to be just bottles. The Lagunitas? Is that what it was? Yeah. Maybe it's always only been bottles?
• 21:09
Athletic's- That's annoying when you want to ride a bike... definitely in beer. Oh, in cans. I thought- Definitely. De- Athletics definitely in beer. Definitely beer. [laughs] Yeah, cans.
• 21:15
[laughs] Um, S- Sam Adams Just the Haze. Haven't tried that one yet. That one should be semi-widely available, I would think. Uh, this one sounds like something that we wouldn't have in this area.
• 21:26
