- 0:00Speaker 1: As we know that national Cara's Week has indeed kicked
- 0:02Speaker 1: off here in the Northern Territory with a number of
- 0:05Speaker 1: events held across the place over the weekend. And joining
- 0:08Speaker 1: me in the studio to tell us a little bit
- 0:11Speaker 1: more about Kara's Week. It is indeed the CEO of
- 0:15Speaker 1: Kara's and T Steve Patone, good morning, very well. And
- 0:21Speaker 1: then we've also got the Business Development Executive Chris Hayward.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Good morning to.
- 0:25Speaker 2: You, Good morning Katie.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Lovely to have you both in the studio and it
- 0:29Speaker 1: sounds like it has been an incredibly busy weekend with
- 0:32Speaker 1: Kara's Week. We're really kicking off yesterday.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Yeah, in Alice, Catherine, Golf and Darwin we had the
- 0:43Speaker 3: at the water Parks. We had our kickoff and it
- 0:46Speaker 3: was awesome. There was plenty of fun, plenty of ice creams,
- 0:51Speaker 3: plenty of laughs, plenty of flies.
- 0:56Speaker 1: All wonderful stuff. Now I know that plenty of people
- 0:59Speaker 1: this this morning maybe have a bit of an idea
- 1:02Speaker 1: what care is int do? But you know, break it
- 1:05Speaker 1: down for us, what exactly do cares into do?
- 1:09Speaker 3: Well? We primarily support unpaid cares, so that's mom's, dads
- 1:15Speaker 3: or doesn't matter yourself that has mom at home that's
- 1:19Speaker 3: possibly needs support. Yep, she might be early stages dementia,
- 1:24Speaker 3: and so cares INTI will help the individual that's supporting
- 1:28Speaker 3: them in a variety of ways. We have respite. We
- 1:33Speaker 3: have a thing called inner i sss Integrated care support
- 1:37Speaker 3: services that assess individuals and come up with options on
- 1:43Speaker 3: how best to support them so that the care system
- 1:48Speaker 3: doesn't fall apart and end up in hospital. And you
- 1:51Speaker 3: know that's so it's trying to keep the family unit
- 1:53Speaker 3: together basically.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And I guess what's tough is, you know, anybody, anyone
- 1:57Speaker 1: can be a care Sometimes you've you know, you've even
- 2:00Speaker 1: got kids that are quite young caring for their parents
- 2:03Speaker 1: or caring for other siblings as well, don't you.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Yeah, We've got a good point to bring up. Actually, Katie,
- 2:09Speaker 2: there's a Young Cares program yep, because there's often kids
- 2:13Speaker 2: from eighteen twelve early teens that are providing care for
- 2:18Speaker 2: a family member, might be a parent, or a grandmother
- 2:21Speaker 2: or grandfather or a sibling. And so we have specific
- 2:25Speaker 2: programs to support young cares as well. And if there's
- 2:30Speaker 2: any the young kids that need that reach out and
- 2:34Speaker 2: we've got a great team of young people supporting other
- 2:38Speaker 2: young people.
- 2:39Speaker 1: It's you know, I always think it's incredible what our
- 2:42Speaker 1: care is in the Northern Territory do, because so many
- 2:44Speaker 1: of us just go about our daily lives and we've
- 2:46Speaker 1: actually got no idea what other people are dealing with
- 2:49Speaker 1: each and every day, either you know, caring for a parent,
- 2:53Speaker 1: or caring for a child that maybe does have some difficulties,
- 2:57Speaker 1: or caring for a loved one. And you know, there's
- 3:00Speaker 1: still juggling work. They're still juggling everyday life. It's not
- 3:04Speaker 1: an easy thing to do for a lot of people,
- 3:06Speaker 1: is USh.
- 3:07Speaker 3: No, you're correct, and one in eight usually have some
- 3:12Speaker 3: sort of caring responsibility. I was just thinking as you
- 3:14Speaker 3: were talking that one of the girls in the office
- 3:17Speaker 3: runs home every day at lunchtime to support her mom
- 3:21Speaker 3: who's aged, frail, aged, and and she doesn't really recognize
- 3:27Speaker 3: it as care. And I said, well, it is actually
- 3:29Speaker 3: every day you do that. You fallen her on the weekends,
- 3:32Speaker 3: you pop by. I said, that's keeping her safe and
- 3:35Speaker 3: keeping her in the community rather than in an age
- 3:38Speaker 3: care facility or whatever. So, yeah, one in eight are
- 3:42Speaker 3: caring in some responsibility, are some capacity.
- 3:45Speaker 1: So how many do we have any idea how many
- 3:48Speaker 1: cares we've got in the Northern Territory.
- 3:50Speaker 3: I would say probably thirty thousand plus.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Wow. And that's just the people who recognize themselves I
- 3:57Speaker 1: guess as being cares as well.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Yeah, and if you went rural and remote, I'm sure
- 4:03Speaker 3: the numbers would be a lot more because of the
- 4:06Speaker 3: caring responsibilities.
- 4:08Speaker 1: And now there will definitely be people listening this morning
- 4:11Speaker 1: that aren't aware of some of the different initiatives or
- 4:13Speaker 1: different supports that they may be able to, you know,
- 4:16Speaker 1: may be able to get or to look for. I
- 4:19Speaker 1: suppose if they are careers, you know, where what can
- 4:23Speaker 1: they do?
- 4:23Speaker 3: Well?
- 4:23Speaker 1: Where can they find out some further information?
- 4:26Speaker 2: Probably the easiest way is to go to our website
- 4:29Speaker 2: www dot cariznt, dot ASN dot au. And if you
- 4:34Speaker 2: go to the website, there's all the information, the linkages
- 4:39Speaker 2: and it's mobile friendly, so get on there or Google
- 4:44Speaker 2: carries NT go to the website and there's a free
- 4:48Speaker 2: call number as well. Get on there, have a look
- 4:51Speaker 2: because we've got heaps of support available.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And you've also got plenty of events planned this week too.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Do what's on this week?
- 4:59Speaker 2: We've got an event Hunty do next Saturday, we're doing
- 5:02Speaker 2: a free sausage Siasil. There's one happening down at Alice
- 5:07Speaker 2: Springs which I think is Thursday as well. All those
- 5:10Speaker 2: details once again are on the website, so people go
- 5:14Speaker 2: and have a look right there as soon as you
- 5:16Speaker 2: land on the page. So yeah, we've got heaps and
- 5:18Speaker 2: as Steve was saying, we had Katherine lawn Boy Alice
- 5:24Speaker 2: events yesterday. And the other thing is for people remembers
- 5:28Speaker 2: that we deliver the services in Darlin but also the Bush,
- 5:34Speaker 2: so we have quite a big footprints so we don't
- 5:36Speaker 2: forget about the Bush and we're servicing all those regions
- 5:41Speaker 2: all over the NT. And the program is called the
- 5:45Speaker 2: Carers Gateway, which is federally funded and we're the service
- 5:49Speaker 2: provider for the Northern Territory. But like I said, get
- 5:52Speaker 2: on the website, google it and reach out because we've
- 5:56Speaker 2: got a great team and there's lots of different supports available.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Well, it is wonderful to catch up with you both
- 6:01Speaker 1: this morning. I really appreciate your time and thanks so
- 6:04Speaker 1: much for coming in and telling us more about keras
- 6:07Speaker 1: you know Keira is nt but also about what's happening
- 6:09Speaker 1: this week. I think it's really important and as we've
- 6:12Speaker 1: touched on, you know, there are so many cares in
- 6:14Speaker 1: the Northern Territory who do a phenomenal job, so a
- 6:17Speaker 1: big shout out to all of them this morning as well.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Thank you both so much for your time this morning.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Chris and Steve lovely to chat with you. Thanks, thank you,
