- 0:55Speaker 2: All Right, welcome in Tuesday Night. That means it's time
- 0:58Speaker 2: to talk travel, Kevin mc ella. Glad to be with
- 1:01Speaker 2: you and always glad to welcome back Linda Perillo, especially
- 1:04Speaker 2: when she's been away for a little bit.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Hello lady, Hello Kevin. Yes, get to do one of.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Those things that we in the travel media space love doing,
- 1:14Speaker 2: and that is going somewhere on someone else's dime.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Yes and no, it.
- 1:20Speaker 5: Was a little sprinkling of a few things. But it
- 1:24Speaker 5: does help to be in the industry.
- 1:26Speaker 4: I mean, I gotta I tell you that for sure.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So let's bring people up to speed. A major cruise
- 1:33Speaker 2: line launched a brand new thing and they said, Linda,
- 1:37Speaker 2: come down and check it out, and they put you
- 1:39Speaker 2: up where tell us about the whole thing.
- 1:42Speaker 4: So basically, actually a good friend.
- 1:45Speaker 5: You know, you find your friends sometimes and you don't
- 1:48Speaker 5: realize that I had a very good friend named Frankie
- 1:50Speaker 5: Fuentez years ago in the travel No relationship.
- 1:53Speaker 2: To Nick Finez, by the way, we just want to
- 1:55Speaker 2: make that perfectly clear.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Who's Nick Fuentes.
- 1:59Speaker 2: That's that crazy right winger that Tucker Carlson is like
- 2:03Speaker 2: aligning himself with these days. Oh is an anti semi.
- 2:07Speaker 2: We don't have anything to do with it.
- 2:10Speaker 3: No, it's just.
- 2:13Speaker 5: And he hooked me up with a wonderful woman by
- 2:16Speaker 5: the name of Gina at the IHG Resorts Intercontinental in Miami,
- 2:23Speaker 5: which is about a mile away from from the cruise port,
- 2:29Speaker 5: which was yeah, which was so simple. So we had
- 2:32Speaker 5: actually because airfare to Florida right now, is completely out
- 2:37Speaker 5: of anywhere. Yeah, we flew into Fort Lauderdale the night
- 2:45Speaker 5: before the cruise.
- 2:47Speaker 4: So the cruise started April fourth, which was a Saturday.
- 2:51Speaker 5: We flew in on Friday afternoon, which I have to
- 2:53Speaker 5: tell you going forward, just as a general rule. You know,
- 2:57Speaker 5: when I was a kidne I used to travel with
- 2:58Speaker 5: my parents. We used to leave the morning of the
- 3:01Speaker 5: cruise and take fight and then you know, whatever time
- 3:05Speaker 5: you were boarding the ship, you boarded the ship. I
- 3:08Speaker 5: totally recommend, with TSA and everything else going on in
- 3:11Speaker 5: this world, that you leave the night before or the
- 3:13Speaker 5: day before, and that worked for us. So we did
- 3:18Speaker 5: overnight at the gorgeous If I tell you, one of
- 3:21Speaker 5: the most impeccably decorated, clean hotels I've seen in a
- 3:29Speaker 5: long time is the Intercontinental Resort.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Miami, not Durral Miami. And it was terrific.
- 3:38Speaker 5: And when we got there, it was a little late,
- 3:41Speaker 5: but I'll tell you it was like Miami Central. I
- 3:44Speaker 5: mean the music going, there were bars, there were kids,
- 3:50Speaker 5: it was loud, but it was very Miami and you
- 3:53Speaker 5: realized where you were and you were being welcomed by
- 3:55Speaker 5: the Miami vibe. The front desk I have to tell you,
- 4:00Speaker 5: in years, I have never met a staff at the
- 4:04Speaker 5: front desk that was as efficient and warm and welcoming.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Because these hotel personnel and I could do a whole
- 4:12Speaker 5: bit on that really bite the big WAZOOI these days
- 4:15Speaker 5: they're awful.
- 4:17Speaker 4: I think quality control has gone down.
- 4:19Speaker 5: I think any kind of personal anything has gone down.
- 4:23Speaker 5: The stat at this hotel was on and we ordered
- 4:28Speaker 5: room service because it was late and the kids were hungry.
- 4:31Speaker 5: That was on too, And the girl that delivered I
- 4:33Speaker 5: forget her name, she was so sweet, I mean, on it.
- 4:36Speaker 5: And so I was so happy to see that Intercontinental
- 4:41Speaker 5: still puts value on customer service and on their guests.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Gina did a very nice, wonderful thing, and she did.
- 4:51Speaker 5: I think she upgraded us too, And I would have
- 4:53Speaker 5: paid for it. The club level and in the morning,
- 4:59Speaker 5: which is great. They always say, if you get the breakfast, sport,
- 5:02Speaker 5: drop the dime. On a club level, there's snacks, there's drinks.
- 5:07Speaker 5: I do it in Disney because it's wonderful. In the morning,
- 5:10Speaker 5: we had not a Continental breakfast. There was like a
- 5:13Speaker 5: full buffet breakfast up there. So you know, here's the
- 5:17Speaker 5: other thing, Kevin, You're gonna pay for it in one
- 5:19Speaker 5: way or another. Right, you got to pay for breakfast
- 5:22Speaker 5: for the fam, or you're gonna pay extra for the room.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I agree, going to pay for the effort to get
- 5:27Speaker 2: there or to have.
- 5:28Speaker 4: It there, Oh my gosh. Absolutely. Now.
- 5:32Speaker 5: The one thing that we noticed, and I will also
- 5:36Speaker 5: say that Miami is not New York, it's not the
- 5:39Speaker 5: metropolitan area, which is good, but when it comes to
- 5:43Speaker 5: getting an Uber outside the airport, we took a taxi.
- 5:48Speaker 5: The taxis are lined up and ready to go. We
- 5:51Speaker 5: had six pieces of luggage, we were five of us traveling,
- 5:57Speaker 5: and they accommodated and they got it down there for
- 6:00Speaker 5: I think half the price of what an Uber would
- 6:03Speaker 5: have been with less hassle because a lot of times
- 6:05Speaker 5: you come out of the airport and the Uber pickup
- 6:09Speaker 5: is not in front of your baggage claim door.
- 6:11Speaker 2: You're yeah. Now, one of the frustrating that prices no
- 6:14Speaker 2: matter which airport you're in, you have to almost have
- 6:16Speaker 2: a separate map to find the lift in Uber pickups.
- 6:21Speaker 5: And my husband has no patience, especially at seven o'clock
- 6:25Speaker 5: in the evening with you know, three kids and a wife.
- 6:29Speaker 5: He's like, we're taking a cab and you know what,
- 6:32Speaker 5: it was the smartest thing to do.
- 6:35Speaker 4: But I have to tell you so impressed.
- 6:39Speaker 5: And I've been to hotels where I go, what what
- 6:41Speaker 5: are we paying for? If you are going to the port,
- 6:47Speaker 5: I recommend a the night before, and I absolutely recommend
- 6:50Speaker 5: one hundred and fifty percent the IH.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I can't believe your dad, being the like master traveler
- 6:58Speaker 2: that he was, thought flying down the same day as
- 7:02Speaker 2: the cruise was the way to go. Like, that's just.
- 7:07Speaker 4: No, it doesn't.
- 7:07Speaker 5: I think back in the day, Kevin, things were much
- 7:10Speaker 5: more efficient. There were less cancelations, less problems. We didn't
- 7:15Speaker 5: have this TSA thing looming which shouldn't be looming over
- 7:18Speaker 5: us anymore because they got they got paid, you know so.
- 7:25Speaker 5: But that then as a kid, that's what I remember.
- 7:27Speaker 5: We took the early flight and got on the cruise.
- 7:29Speaker 5: Then not a good I would not recommend that, especially
- 7:33Speaker 5: with kids, and especially you know, here's the thing we
- 7:36Speaker 5: talked about travel, Kevin, is that you always have to
- 7:39Speaker 5: leave cushion. There always has to be room for the unexpected.
- 7:43Speaker 2: What about this?
- 7:44Speaker 4: Maybe, yeah, what about this? Maybe?
- 7:47Speaker 5: You know things that you learn and when we talk
- 7:50Speaker 5: about the cruise, I'm going to tell you for somebody
- 7:52Speaker 5: that's cruised a lot. There were things that I didn't
- 7:54Speaker 5: realize now that I would do differently if I had
- 7:59Speaker 5: to go on a cruise tomorrow that I just learned,
- 8:01Speaker 5: like in the past ten days. So yeah, yeah, I mean,
- 8:04Speaker 5: you're always learning. Things are always changing, Kevin.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Things are always teaching.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I'm not going to say in old Linda, but teaching
- 8:12Speaker 2: teaching a season Linda new tricks.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Here, Yeah, exactly, old dog.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Hate to say, keV, old dog new tricks, which my
- 8:20Speaker 5: kids know now. My son Devin travels constantly and could
- 8:24Speaker 5: write a book, and he's so fast at what he does.
- 8:27Speaker 4: And I'm not fast like that anymore. But but but
- 8:31Speaker 4: the learning curve is there, and you have to know
- 8:36Speaker 4: before Gods.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Really do change the equation. So when it's just the
- 8:40Speaker 2: bride of night, we fly through airports, we pack light
- 8:43Speaker 2: like we are such good travelers together. You packed for
- 8:48Speaker 2: the whole crew, and it just slows you down and
- 8:51Speaker 2: they're just not their little legs don't move as fast.
- 8:54Speaker 2: It's just it's just I.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Know, And that's something too.
- 8:58Speaker 5: We'll talk about about the crews that I realized to
- 9:00Speaker 5: I had my younger two with me and my stepdaughter.
- 9:04Speaker 5: You know, the things that they know and things that
- 9:06Speaker 5: they don't know that we think that they should be knowing.
- 9:11Speaker 4: And I remember and I said to myself, well, Linda,
- 9:13Speaker 4: you didn't.
- 9:13Speaker 5: Tell them X y Z, right, So you have to
- 9:18Speaker 5: remember that unless you direct them, they're not gonna know.
- 9:21Speaker 2: That's why you take the trip. Travel is the best education.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Yes, it is a thousand percent you bet, you bet.
- 9:28Speaker 2: All right, she's Linda Parrello. She's back. She's gonna tell
- 9:31Speaker 2: us a little more about the brand new boat that
- 9:33Speaker 2: she was on, because that is quite a story in
- 9:37Speaker 2: and of itself. And then we've got a little bit later.
- 9:40Speaker 2: We've got another revolutionary destination as we are working our
- 9:43Speaker 2: way through the revolutionary warstops that you can travel to
- 9:46Speaker 2: and still see for yourself. And she's got something special
- 9:50Speaker 2: planned for Perilla's pointers tonight. So stick around. It's a
- 9:52Speaker 2: big show travel Tuesday on the Radio night Line.
- 10:04Speaker 1: And now I'm from New York back to radio night Life.
- 10:08Speaker 1: You're Kevin mccollor.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Welcome back. She's Lynda. I'm Kevin. It's Tuesday night, and
- 10:13Speaker 2: that means we're talking travel, one of our favorite times.
- 10:16Speaker 2: And if you want to go with us off the air,
- 10:18Speaker 2: stay with us in contact. Beyond the radio show, you
- 10:22Speaker 2: can always get the podcast. It's Stay on podcast Network,
- 10:25Speaker 2: but you can also now get our newsletter passport Life,
- 10:30Speaker 2: and Linda's going to be authoring a couple of pieces
- 10:33Speaker 2: about what she just went through in terms of her
- 10:35Speaker 2: travel experience, and we'll give you all the details and
- 10:38Speaker 2: all the information as to how you can follow up
- 10:40Speaker 2: on these great experiences as well. In that piece, you
- 10:43Speaker 2: go to that passport life dot com, that passport life
- 10:47Speaker 2: dot com and you can get yours. Today, Linda, we
- 10:50Speaker 2: talked about the good advice you gave about traveling the
- 10:54Speaker 2: night before and then you know, and I will say this,
- 10:59Speaker 2: if you have like Caribbean travel, that you're flying out
- 11:03Speaker 2: of the Miami area four even on flights, go down
- 11:07Speaker 2: the night before and then you get to the airport
- 11:10Speaker 2: early and you're you know, the next morning, you're ready
- 11:12Speaker 2: for the A lot of people don't do it that
- 11:14Speaker 2: way because they just fly direct from New York or whatever.
- 11:17Speaker 2: But sometimes you can find deals out of Miami that
- 11:20Speaker 2: are hard to beat. Anyway, then you went on, then
- 11:24Speaker 2: you got on the boat. Now talk to us about
- 11:26Speaker 2: this brand new ship that launched and how you got
- 11:29Speaker 2: to experience what you did on.
- 11:32Speaker 5: So I have a really good buddy at NCL Norwegian
- 11:36Speaker 5: Cruise Lines, Melissa, who I've been.
- 11:38Speaker 2: They're still around and cl still around and.
- 11:40Speaker 5: He's still around, and they are more competitive, I think
- 11:44Speaker 5: than they ever wore, and they're trying to stay neck
- 11:46Speaker 5: and neck with like Royal. I mean, Royal is always
- 11:49Speaker 5: producing a huge new mega ship and Royal got to
- 11:52Speaker 5: tell you been on Royal too, They do not disappoint.
- 11:56Speaker 5: I think that's my next cruise is with Royal. So
- 12:01Speaker 5: we experienced the Norwegian Luna, which is the sister ship
- 12:04Speaker 5: to the Norwegian Aqua, which I believe was launched last year.
- 12:08Speaker 5: So this was the second voyage of the Norwegian Luna,
- 12:11Speaker 5: beautiful ship gorgeous. We stayed in what was called the Haven,
- 12:16Speaker 5: which I have to tell you, if you can drop
- 12:18Speaker 5: a dime again and you're only taking maybe one or
- 12:22Speaker 5: two vacations a year, the Haven is one thousand percent
- 12:27Speaker 5: worth it. Why it is a segregated sweet section of
- 12:32Speaker 5: the ship.
- 12:33Speaker 4: And along with being in the Haven.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Suite not racially satiated.
- 12:37Speaker 2: It's segregated like it's set off to the side from
- 12:41Speaker 2: it's like.
- 12:41Speaker 4: A I hate to say it, Kevin, it's like a
- 12:43Speaker 4: cast system.
- 12:46Speaker 2: I just well, that's a word we haven't heard in
- 12:48Speaker 2: a while. We better expound on that for a second.
- 12:51Speaker 4: This serfs well swimming, that's right. Cool.
- 12:57Speaker 2: You had to tell you had to till the upper
- 13:00Speaker 2: forty while he's staying in the in the haven.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Master.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Please, if you have a feudal masters were coming around.
- 13:12Speaker 4: But I'm going back to my suite now. You finished
- 13:14Speaker 4: that work. So you know, we.
- 13:17Speaker 5: Had our own pool, our own private pool, our own
- 13:19Speaker 5: private restaurant. And what it does is it really cuts
- 13:23Speaker 5: out about ninety percent of the.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Of the population. You have your own concierge things. You know.
- 13:30Speaker 5: That part of it was good, however, and this is
- 13:33Speaker 5: where I think I got annoyed. Everything was an up charge.
- 13:38Speaker 5: I thought I had paid for Wi Fi, the best.
- 13:41Speaker 4: WiFi on the ship. I got there.
- 13:43Speaker 5: Yeah, And then I got there and really wasn't what
- 13:46Speaker 5: I thought it was. We paid for this all inclusive
- 13:50Speaker 5: package that had Starbucks for the kids. There's a like
- 13:54Speaker 5: a literal Starbucks. It wasn't just like an offshoot Starbucks,
- 13:58Speaker 5: you know what I mean, a real Stars But the
- 14:01Speaker 5: kids weren't allowed to order the store Bucks because of
- 14:04Speaker 5: the caffeine consumption, you had to be over eighteen. Well,
- 14:06Speaker 5: nobody told me that either, and then you could only order.
- 14:10Speaker 4: You can have unlimited store Bucks.
- 14:12Speaker 6: As long are you ready for this as you finished
- 14:16Speaker 6: the first drink you had, and if you finished that
- 14:20Speaker 6: in ten minutes, you could go back for another Storebucks.
- 14:23Speaker 6: But you couldn't order three at a time, even though
- 14:27Speaker 6: it was unlimited. So the nickel and diming thing had
- 14:32Speaker 6: me so nuts, and the other thing that had me.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Nuts too, Well, isn't that?
- 14:37Speaker 2: Isn't that kind of why you do the cruise? Like
- 14:40Speaker 2: you want you to pay once and unpack once and
- 14:43Speaker 2: then just do everything.
- 14:45Speaker 5: And for night for eighty percent of it. Yes, because
- 14:49Speaker 5: we paid for the drinks. We pay you know, you
- 14:51Speaker 5: paid for your drinks. You pay ever your meals are done,
- 14:53Speaker 5: I mean, you don't have to think about your reels.
- 14:55Speaker 5: But there's an up charge again for the specialty restaurants.
- 14:58Speaker 5: Now if you're in the Haven, you I had some
- 15:00Speaker 5: credits to that blah blah blah. However, I mean there
- 15:04Speaker 5: were things about the ship, and I got to be honest,
- 15:07Speaker 5: if I was going to do a review that I
- 15:10Speaker 5: think they really have to work on. And part of
- 15:14Speaker 5: it is like at the Haven, you have this concierge.
- 15:17Speaker 5: If you have a concierge and you're paying for that
- 15:19Speaker 5: service with the Haven, which you do, they should concierge
- 15:24Speaker 5: should never have a middleman. They should have their own
- 15:27Speaker 5: access to whatever you need. Instead, it was I need
- 15:29Speaker 5: a reservation, Well I got to call the I've got
- 15:31Speaker 5: to call the restaurant. You know, we're trying to fix
- 15:35Speaker 5: our bill that the you know, they're holding onto charges,
- 15:38Speaker 5: they're pending charges. So when your credit card company sees
- 15:41Speaker 5: pending charges, instead of charging you everything and getting a
- 15:47Speaker 5: bill on the last day, which I know Royal does
- 15:50Speaker 5: because my daughter travels with Royal Caribbean, they don't charge
- 15:54Speaker 5: your card until eight o'clock the morning of disembarkation.
- 15:59Speaker 4: So now they're holding all these credits.
- 16:01Speaker 5: And what we like to do is pay down the
- 16:03Speaker 5: credit card as we go so that you don't have
- 16:07Speaker 5: a bill at the end of the cruise and it's
- 16:09Speaker 5: not eating up your credit.
- 16:10Speaker 4: I mean, not everybody does that.
- 16:12Speaker 5: But there were so many things that I thought should
- 16:15Speaker 5: have been refined and better. Now that being said, the
- 16:20Speaker 5: ship was beautiful. I loved the itinerary. I love the
- 16:26Speaker 5: concept of the Haven. So I'm telling anybody, if you're
- 16:31Speaker 5: out there and you're going to go on NCL, you
- 16:35Speaker 5: should drop a dime on the Haven if you can,
- 16:39Speaker 5: and you'll be very, very very happy. It comes with
- 16:42Speaker 5: a butler, but again, the butler can only do so much.
- 16:48Speaker 5: They're the middleman to getting in touch with this and
- 16:52Speaker 5: that and like so, I think there's a lot of
- 16:54Speaker 5: things that NCL could do to make it better. What
- 16:59Speaker 5: they do have going for them is the Haven. Because
- 17:02Speaker 5: I looked up to see if even a Royal Caribbean has,
- 17:05Speaker 5: they have what's called, I think a sweet class. So
- 17:09Speaker 5: the sweet class are sweets on the ship which are
- 17:13Speaker 5: allowed to.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Go to designated areas and this and that.
- 17:17Speaker 5: The Haven keeps you contained, which is wonderful I think.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Anyway, well, it's so and I've I've not done enough
- 17:26Speaker 2: cruises to know how novel concept something like the Haven is,
- 17:29Speaker 2: but it sounds like a great idea based on its
- 17:32Speaker 2: face fabulous.
- 17:33Speaker 5: It's absolutely fabulous, and I love cruising. Now. Patrick had
- 17:38Speaker 5: never been on a cruise, his daughter Savannah had never been.
- 17:43Speaker 5: You know, it was a novel idea for them. But
- 17:46Speaker 5: the great thing about a cruise is what everything should
- 17:49Speaker 5: be paid for upfront and you shouldn't really have to
- 17:52Speaker 5: worry about anything else when you're on the ship. Now, Bingo,
- 17:54Speaker 5: I'm a Bingo girl.
- 17:55Speaker 4: We love Bingo.
- 17:56Speaker 5: I played Bingo, you know the casino for me, I'm
- 18:00Speaker 5: older now. I don't like all these digital machines. They're
- 18:03Speaker 5: all digital. I can't stand it.
- 18:05Speaker 4: I like it.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Neon colors given me a headache. It's just something with
- 18:11Speaker 2: these big screens, just like and that's a lot of
- 18:14Speaker 2: blue light, you know, like, I don't know, it just
- 18:16Speaker 2: messes with.
- 18:17Speaker 4: Me, it does.
- 18:18Speaker 5: I was not happy with the casino. But unfortunately it's
- 18:22Speaker 5: not just NCL. It's the way these new ships are
- 18:26Speaker 5: doing it now, right, And they're beautiful and they have
- 18:30Speaker 5: a lot of stuff on there for the kids that
- 18:31Speaker 5: I thought was great. They have this roller I forget
- 18:35Speaker 5: where it's even cooled. It was this roller coaster.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Thing that went up. I mean, my kids didn't even
- 18:39Speaker 4: do it.
- 18:39Speaker 2: They Oh, I think I've seen that on the commercial
- 18:42Speaker 2: for the boat, because they've sung it on a lot
- 18:44Speaker 2: of the golf coverage in the football Yes, yep, all right,
- 18:47Speaker 2: she's Lenda. I'm Kevin got to take another quick break.
- 18:50Speaker 2: It's Traveled Tuesday, coming right back, don't go way.
- 18:58Speaker 3: From New York Life with Kevin McCullough.
- 19:03Speaker 2: All right, Kevin McCullough, Linda Perillo, glad to be back
- 19:06Speaker 2: with you. It's travel Tuesday. And if you have not
- 19:08Speaker 2: yet done it, friends, it's coming down to the wire
- 19:12Speaker 2: for you to get that seat reserved to go to
- 19:14Speaker 2: Italy with us in the at the end of September,
- 19:17Speaker 2: first part of October. You're going to just love first
- 19:22Speaker 2: of all, the weather. The weather's going to be incredible.
- 19:24Speaker 2: And then where we're going Rome for four days, the
- 19:26Speaker 2: Amalfi Coast for four days. You're just not going to
- 19:29Speaker 2: find a more fun group of people to be with.
- 19:33Speaker 2: And then Linda and I and some of our friends
- 19:35Speaker 2: that is right signed up to go.
- 19:37Speaker 4: We are fun, Kevin, That's one thing we definitely are.
- 19:40Speaker 2: It will tape some shows and stuff from there too,
- 19:42Speaker 2: and you can be part of the you know, the
- 19:44Speaker 2: crowd that watches. But I was, I'm I've been nostalgic
- 19:48Speaker 2: this last couple of weeks on it because as the
- 19:50Speaker 2: sun's coming out and the weather's getting nice, I'm starting
- 19:53Speaker 2: to think about Sorrento and you know, the evenings walking
- 19:58Speaker 2: the streets of Sorrento and just you know, enjoying a
- 20:01Speaker 2: smooth little gelato as I'm you know, with the kids
- 20:05Speaker 2: going back and forth, and it's it's such a magical place,
- 20:09Speaker 2: the entire Malfy Coast Rome both in one trip. It's
- 20:14Speaker 2: such a magical time, and I just I don't want
- 20:18Speaker 2: people that have. I just heard about somebody this weekend
- 20:22Speaker 2: that was like, you know, my mother wants to go.
- 20:24Speaker 2: She's been wanting to go her whole life. This is
- 20:25Speaker 2: her birthday, and like they should come with us.
- 20:27Speaker 4: She's like, yeah, they come with you.
- 20:29Speaker 2: She's a school teacher. She has to be back in
- 20:31Speaker 2: school by September. And I'm like, well, that's the better
- 20:34Speaker 2: reason to go with us, because Italy will be back
- 20:36Speaker 2: in school as well, which means less crowds where we go.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure.
- 20:43Speaker 5: You know, back in the day, you know, we would
- 20:45Speaker 5: sell the fall as like off season, right, my father
- 20:49Speaker 5: willis October.
- 20:52Speaker 4: No, there was no shoulder season.
- 20:53Speaker 6: Then.
- 20:54Speaker 5: It was high season, low season, and the shoulder season
- 20:57Speaker 5: is something that is like this neu veaux jargon, but
- 21:02Speaker 5: it represents itself well because it is the shoulder season. Right,
- 21:07Speaker 5: it's the middle of a high season and a low season.
- 21:11Speaker 5: That really works. And I love September and I love October.
- 21:17Speaker 5: My son got married in Florence in October. It was
- 21:19Speaker 5: like being there in the summertime. It's warm, it's walkable,
- 21:25Speaker 5: it's comfortable, but you have cut out about ninety five
- 21:30Speaker 5: percent of the crowds and yet you're still enjoying this
- 21:35Speaker 5: glorious weather. Europe has been very overcrowded, you know, the
- 21:40Speaker 5: past let's just say five years, that has been their complaint.
- 21:43Speaker 5: They've been overcrowded, and it makes traveling in the middle
- 21:47Speaker 5: of the summer sometimes not so nice, right, not so
- 21:51Speaker 5: pleasurable to be walking because what do we know about Europe, Kevin,
- 21:54Speaker 5: we know and especially in Italy, you know, things are
- 21:57Speaker 5: very It's.
- 21:58Speaker 4: Not like here. We don't have these huge bulls, bards.
- 22:00Speaker 3: And these huts.
- 22:01Speaker 5: Right, we're walking down cobblestones, We're walking in areas that
- 22:05Speaker 5: are small and quaint and beautiful, but they lose flavor
- 22:09Speaker 5: when there are.
- 22:10Speaker 4: Too many crowds.
- 22:11Speaker 5: So going in September and October has now cut that
- 22:15Speaker 5: part out and you're really able to imbibe in what
- 22:19Speaker 5: Italy is and the beauty of it. Not get you know,
- 22:23Speaker 5: mad that there's a line for this or a crowd.
- 22:25Speaker 5: But that's one thing we're going to do. We're gonna
- 22:27Speaker 5: knock those crowds out. We're going to have things already planned,
- 22:30Speaker 5: tickets already done, nobody's waiting online for anything. And that
- 22:36Speaker 5: is you know, the the the that's the I don't
- 22:40Speaker 5: even know what the word I'm looking for the bet
- 22:42Speaker 5: I guess of traveling with us, Yeah.
- 22:45Speaker 2: It's it's gonna be truly an enjoyable experience. You know,
- 22:48Speaker 2: you're not lugging, you know, all of your stuff yourself.
- 22:52Speaker 2: We will make sure that it needs to be. And
- 22:55Speaker 2: I just want to say the hotels that we're staying at,
- 22:59Speaker 2: and again, this was a trip that was kind of
- 23:00Speaker 2: modeled off the one that I took my family with
- 23:02Speaker 2: last year, and so a lot of the stuff that
- 23:04Speaker 2: we saw if you downloaded the ebook at Italy twenty
- 23:07Speaker 2: twenty six dot info, you've seen some of this in person.
- 23:11Speaker 2: But beautiful, gorgeous, And I will tell you the hotel
- 23:14Speaker 2: in Sorrento that we're scheduled to be at. You wake
- 23:17Speaker 2: up at the foot of your bed, there is Mount
- 23:19Speaker 2: Vesuvius just staring at you across the Naples Bay. It
- 23:23Speaker 2: is just the most beautiful and glorious way to wake up.
- 23:25Speaker 2: And then when you have the breakfast that Hotel Christina
- 23:29Speaker 2: has for you, that entire dining area faces the bay
- 23:33Speaker 2: as well, it's you're in paradise. You just cannot express
- 23:38Speaker 2: how beautiful and how amazing it is. But here's the thing.
- 23:41Speaker 2: There's only thirty something seats, and now our people are
- 23:47Speaker 2: working on making sure that everybody that wants to be
- 23:50Speaker 2: on the trip is on the trip, So there are
- 23:52Speaker 2: phone calls being made and there are things being done.
- 23:55Speaker 2: You can hold your seat right now by going to
- 23:59Speaker 2: Italy twenty twenty six dot info Italy twenty twenty six
- 24:02Speaker 2: dot info and put a deposit down. And I would
- 24:06Speaker 2: encourage you to do that because we're not We're not
- 24:08Speaker 2: adding two or three buses. This is not one of
- 24:10Speaker 2: those things where it's gonna be expandable. It's gonna be intimate,
- 24:13Speaker 2: it's gonna be fun, it's gonna be unlike anything that
- 24:16Speaker 2: you've done before. And I just want you to be
- 24:19Speaker 2: with us if you're wanting to go, So please go
- 24:22Speaker 2: to Italy twenty twenty six dot I n FO Italy
- 24:26Speaker 2: twenty twenty six dot info and then plan on coming
- 24:29Speaker 2: and be part of the shows that we tape there.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Christine Nicholas is going to be with us. My bride
- 24:34Speaker 2: who handles all the food writing for Salem, is going
- 24:36Speaker 2: to be there and she's she's gonna set the itinerary
- 24:39Speaker 2: for where some of the restaurants are that we eat
- 24:41Speaker 2: at and you're gonna love them. They are amazing. Yeah,
- 24:44Speaker 2: So get the info, reserve you seat. Come with us
- 24:48Speaker 2: Italy twenty twenty six, Dot info Italy twenty twenty six,
- 24:51Speaker 2: dot I n FO. Stay with us.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Coming back to Color and Radio Night Life from New York.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Welcome back. It's travel Night. She's Linda and I'm Kevin.
- 25:08Speaker 2: And one of the things that we're doing this year
- 25:10Speaker 2: that we've been doing for the last number of weeks
- 25:13Speaker 2: is recounting all of the places that you, as a
- 25:16Speaker 2: tourist can go see as it relates to the two
- 25:20Speaker 2: hundred and fiftieth year of since the founding of our country.
- 25:24Speaker 2: We've been calling these spots revolutionary destinations, and thus far
- 25:29Speaker 2: we've been through Boston, Philadelphia, Williamsburg, Trenton. These were all
- 25:35Speaker 2: stops where Washington and Company had to fight for their life.
- 25:40Speaker 2: But here's the thing. This week's destination is sarah Toga,
- 25:43Speaker 2: New York, and when it came to the war, this
- 25:47Speaker 2: was where the America fight for independence really took hold.
- 25:52Speaker 2: By seventeen seventy seven, the revolution was still far from certain,
- 25:57Speaker 2: and even though we had declared ourselves independent in nineteen
- 25:59Speaker 2: seventy six, the British had this plan to split the
- 26:02Speaker 2: colonies into by controlling the Hudson River and Lynda, I
- 26:05Speaker 2: don't know if you've ever looked at a map about this,
- 26:07Speaker 2: but if you control the Hudson, you could basically drive
- 26:11Speaker 2: a stake right through the heart of what the colonists
- 26:14Speaker 2: were trying to establish his country. And so General John
- 26:20Speaker 2: Burgyone marched south from Canada, confident that the rebellion would
- 26:24Speaker 2: soon collapse under that pressure, and instead he walked straight
- 26:27Speaker 2: into history. The Battle of Saratoga, fought in September and
- 26:30Speaker 2: October of seventeen seventy seven, resulted in the first major
- 26:33Speaker 2: American victory over the full British Army YEA under the
- 26:37Speaker 2: leadership of General Horatio Gates and the aggressive brilliance at
- 26:41Speaker 2: the time aggressive brilliance of Benedict Arnold. He was actually
- 26:44Speaker 2: a very good general before he was a bad general.
- 26:49Speaker 2: They surrounded bergyone horse to surrender. It was stunning, It
- 26:53Speaker 2: was decisive, and it changed. It started, it tipped. The
- 26:56Speaker 2: tide really started changing everything for the Americans because for
- 26:59Speaker 2: the first time there were saw that the American colonies
- 27:01Speaker 2: could do more than just kind of resist. They could
- 27:04Speaker 2: actually win, and that convinced This is why it was important.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Saratoga convinced France that they could jump in and by
- 27:13Speaker 2: bringing their ships and soldiers and resources, it would help
- 27:15Speaker 2: put the British Empire on their heels. And guess what, Saratoga.
- 27:20Speaker 2: If it hadn't been for Saratoga, New York, America as
- 27:23Speaker 2: we know it would not have come into existence.
- 27:26Speaker 5: So so we're supposed to thank Benedict Arnold.
- 27:29Speaker 2: He was one of them. He was one of the twos.
- 27:33Speaker 2: But here's the thing. Saratoga has the National Historical Park
- 27:36Speaker 2: that you can visit while you're there, if you want to,
- 27:41Speaker 2: if you want to see additional sites, the Bemis Heights
- 27:46Speaker 2: where forces held their line, the Saratoga Monument that's out
- 27:50Speaker 2: there is all there. And unlike Boston or Philadelphia, Saratoga
- 27:54Speaker 2: offers space to just like kind of chill and spread out.
- 27:58Speaker 2: There's some really cool places to stay. The town of
- 28:01Speaker 2: Saratoga Springs has the Adelphi Hotel, which delivers beautiful, restored luxury,
- 28:07Speaker 2: historic character. It's kind of like there's some sense of
- 28:10Speaker 2: like what it would be like to be there back
- 28:12Speaker 2: in the day. And then there's also the Gideon Putnam Resort.
- 28:16Speaker 2: But the place you want to eat at is a
- 28:21Speaker 2: Salt and Char because it is the premiere steakhouse in
- 28:26Speaker 2: the region. They sounds good, you know, this kind of
- 28:29Speaker 2: incredible experience. So anyway, Saratoga. Now, I got to ask,
- 28:33Speaker 2: have you ever been to Saratoga?
- 28:36Speaker 5: No, And it's one of the places that I would
- 28:38Speaker 5: like to go to because I hear so many things
- 28:42Speaker 5: beautiful things about Saratoga, not just you're so vain the
- 28:45Speaker 5: horse race, you know it's in it. You're he went
- 28:50Speaker 5: up to Saratoga and your horse naturally one. I hear
- 28:53Speaker 5: so many gorgeous things about it, and i'd love to
- 28:56Speaker 5: go again.
- 28:57Speaker 4: We're so close, but we don't go right well.
- 29:00Speaker 2: And what's amazing about the Tri state area is that
- 29:04Speaker 2: really when you look from d C and the banks,
- 29:07Speaker 2: you know in Virginia where before DC existed, but that
- 29:10Speaker 2: that Virginia region, that colony up to Philadelphia up to Boston,
- 29:15Speaker 2: New York is so keenly situated. Like if you if
- 29:19Speaker 2: you have your family here and you want to know
- 29:21Speaker 2: about the founding of this country, you are just a
- 29:24Speaker 2: little you know, a day's drive at most most places.
- 29:28Speaker 2: And it took Washington days to march, you know, his
- 29:32Speaker 2: eight thousand men from one place to another. It takes
- 29:34Speaker 2: you about two and a half hours to drive there exactly.
- 29:38Speaker 5: And we know, again, things that are in your own backyard.
- 29:42Speaker 5: You know, we take it for granted, we do. You know,
- 29:44Speaker 5: the heart and soul of this country was really born
- 29:48Speaker 5: here and so many ways.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah, so we're gonna we're going to continue to recount
- 29:54Speaker 2: the places of the revolution as we are working our
- 29:57Speaker 2: way through the the celebration of America two fifty. And
- 30:02Speaker 2: I just want to put an important date on your calendar.
- 30:06Speaker 2: June the twenty third, I believe, is the date when
- 30:09Speaker 2: we are going to celebrate America two fifty. Salem, New
- 30:12Speaker 2: York is with an all day broadcast from Times Square
- 30:16Speaker 2: and all the shows, my syndicated show will be there.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Maybe Lynda and Ile tape from there. But that's the
- 30:23Speaker 2: day that we're going to be in Times Square singing
- 30:25Speaker 2: Happy Birthday because where it's just the it's just the
- 30:27Speaker 2: week before the fourth and we're going to have a big,
- 30:32Speaker 2: fat happy birthday time and it should be a lot
- 30:34Speaker 2: of fun.
- 30:35Speaker 5: There you go looking forward to that and it's summertime.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Yeah, So so what are you and your kids doing
- 30:43Speaker 2: for America two fifty Have you guys thought about doing anything,
- 30:46Speaker 2: you know, going to d C or doing anything along
- 30:49Speaker 2: the lines of they're going to have tall ships here
- 30:52Speaker 2: in New York for days, like for a month, they're
- 30:54Speaker 2: going to have like the old you know, the tall
- 30:56Speaker 2: schooners and such.
- 30:57Speaker 5: You know, Kevin, you're giving me ideas now about things
- 31:01Speaker 5: to do. I was thinking about it as you were
- 31:03Speaker 5: just speaking. I'm saying, this is the stuff we should
- 31:05Speaker 5: do for day trips. This is that don't make me
- 31:07Speaker 5: turn the car around stuff, you know, and taking advantage
- 31:11Speaker 5: of it.
- 31:12Speaker 4: You're right now, while.
- 31:17Speaker 5: My youngest is going to be thirteen in June and
- 31:21Speaker 5: my stepdaughter.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Is ten, they're still right in that age group then,
- 31:25Speaker 2: like the wind because.
- 31:25Speaker 4: They are, but you know, they're interesting.
- 31:28Speaker 5: You know, this this generation because of the Internet things
- 31:33Speaker 5: that we didn't have, Kevin, when we were growing up.
- 31:35Speaker 4: They are very.
- 31:35Speaker 5: Well informed, like they know what's going on, and they
- 31:38Speaker 5: hear about these places and they can see them on
- 31:40Speaker 5: TikTok and whatever else they're doing.
- 31:43Speaker 4: So they're actually more informed than we ever.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Were before we went on a trip when we were
- 31:47Speaker 5: their age, which I think is great and that kind
- 31:50Speaker 5: of you know, what's their appetite or what is.
- 31:56Speaker 4: There to see? Because a kid always says to you, what, well,
- 31:58Speaker 4: what's there for me? Right right?
- 32:02Speaker 2: Well, the more I've done this series in the newsletter
- 32:04Speaker 2: and by the way, the entire path of the revolutionary
- 32:09Speaker 2: destinations the sale newsletter, folks, they want to turn it
- 32:12Speaker 2: into its own special issue of the newsletter, just just
- 32:15Speaker 2: giving you the trip through the different places, because it
- 32:17Speaker 2: really has it's and it's really wet my appetite to
- 32:20Speaker 2: you know, kind of see some of these spots. I've
- 32:22Speaker 2: driven through Trenton a thousand times. I've never thought of
- 32:25Speaker 2: it as a historical spot.
- 32:26Speaker 5: You know, it's like, yeah, Trent Jersey, Trent Kevin, Trent,
- 32:31Speaker 5: Kevin keV.
- 32:32Speaker 4: I don't know what Trent.
- 32:35Speaker 2: There's no there's never a second team pronounced in Jersey.
- 32:38Speaker 4: It's just trent and I don't think there's any reason
- 32:40Speaker 4: to go to Trenton.
- 32:42Speaker 2: All right, Well see you got to go back to
- 32:45Speaker 2: issues and read the Trenton piece. All right, I'm going
- 32:47Speaker 2: to take it, going to take a quick break. Linda's
- 32:49Speaker 2: got Perilla's pointers.
- 32:50Speaker 4: When we come back.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Once again from New York, here's Radio night Life and
- 33:02Speaker 1: Kevin mckella.
- 33:04Speaker 2: All right, welcome back. It's this point in the show
- 33:06Speaker 2: each week where Linda digs into her bag of hacks
- 33:11Speaker 2: and she figures out things that will help you. And
- 33:14Speaker 2: you found some new ones for cruising. What were they?
- 33:18Speaker 5: Well, this is what I'm going to say. I'm going
- 33:21Speaker 5: to make a general blanket statement here. No, before you go,
- 33:26Speaker 5: and I took so much of my travel knowledge for
- 33:29Speaker 5: granted that I didn't know a lot before I went.
- 33:33Speaker 4: And before you go.
- 33:35Speaker 5: I'm going to use the cruise as an example because
- 33:37Speaker 5: you go on a website and you get a blurbs.
- 33:40Speaker 4: I call it a.
- 33:41Speaker 5: Pretty much about the ship, about this about that. The
- 33:44Speaker 5: things I did not know are don't guar you know
- 33:47Speaker 5: they're going to send you luggage tags or you're going
- 33:49Speaker 5: to print print out your luggage tags, go on Amazon,
- 33:53Speaker 5: put in your ship, and buy the clear tags for
- 33:57Speaker 5: your luggage. Okay, I have Patrick taping the sticky ones.
- 34:03Speaker 4: I was so nervous. It was such a pain.
- 34:05Speaker 5: Get the clear ones that look like a lanyard for
- 34:07Speaker 5: your ship side for your ship because they'll come in
- 34:10Speaker 5: different sizes. And print out those tags for your baggage
- 34:14Speaker 5: at home.
- 34:14Speaker 4: Okay for sure.
- 34:16Speaker 5: The other thing that I learned too, check in for
- 34:18Speaker 5: your flight, have your luggage prepaid for, so the only
- 34:23Speaker 5: thing you have to do when you get to the
- 34:24Speaker 5: airport is put the luggage tags on. And always ask,
- 34:28Speaker 5: because I'm paranoid, always ask the agent there to put
- 34:32Speaker 5: the luggage tags on. And always remember to put on
- 34:35Speaker 5: those other two little baby stickers because they handle those
- 34:39Speaker 5: things like they want to kill your bags, so things
- 34:42Speaker 5: go flying off and ripped. That's one thing. Another thing is,
- 34:47Speaker 5: you know, find out about your ship, find out how
- 34:49Speaker 5: they make charges and what is really included in your.
- 34:52Speaker 4: Package and what's not.
- 34:53Speaker 5: Call the cruise company ahead of time and say walk
- 34:56Speaker 5: me through this.
- 34:57Speaker 4: And these are things that I did not do.
- 35:00Speaker 3: Again.
- 35:00Speaker 5: It's about being an educated consumer. And I'm a smarty pants,
- 35:04Speaker 5: know it all traveler, and I think I got eaten
- 35:07Speaker 5: up a little bit, and now I learned because we
- 35:10Speaker 5: always are learning, right Kevin, We're always.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Learning and always be learning.
- 35:14Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, And so be prepared and have always as
- 35:18Speaker 5: much with you. You don't want to buy things on
- 35:20Speaker 5: the ship. They overcharge for everything. Bring a ton of sunscreen,
- 35:24Speaker 5: bring as much from home, be prepared with drama, meine
- 35:27Speaker 5: all these things, which I was.
- 35:29Speaker 4: That's really it. It's the preparation. It's the know before
- 35:32Speaker 4: you go.
- 35:33Speaker 5: The little nuance is that you think you knew about
- 35:35Speaker 5: that you really didn't know about, because I don't think
- 35:38Speaker 5: on our website there is enough information at least that's
- 35:41Speaker 5: how I felt.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Yeah, well, and you've just done it, so it's fresh
- 35:45Speaker 2: and it's easy for you to, you know, have made
- 35:49Speaker 2: these notes and remind us all and it's good stuff.
- 35:51Speaker 2: So maybe you'll do a piece for us on that
- 35:54Speaker 2: with the Passport Life newsletter as well.
- 35:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I will, And that is a definite.
