- 0:12There are few sights more beautiful than a field of wildflowers
- 0:16in full bloom. For a brief season, the hillsides
- 0:20come alive with brilliant colors. What was once dry
- 0:23and barren becomes a landscape of extraordinary
- 0:27beauty. But that beauty carries a sobering reminder:
- 0:31the flowers that seem so full of life today may
- 0:35be gone tomorrow. And tucked away in that simple
- 0:39observation is a truth that every one of us
- 0:42needs to remember: life is beautiful,
- 0:46but life is brief. Thousands of years ago, the prophet
- 0:50Isaiah looked at the flowers of the field and used them
- 0:53to illustrate one of the most important important lessons we could ever learn
- 0:57about life, eternity, and the unchanging Word
- 1:02of God. Welcome to Traveler's Tales, produced by Enjoying
- 1:06the Journey. I'm Greg Dowdy. We explore the places,
- 1:10people, and customs of the Bible, discovering how even the smallest
- 1:14details of Scripture can reveal timeless truths for our lives
- 1:18today. We're grateful for the research and contributions
- 1:22of our friend John Buckner, who helps us better understand the
- 1:26historical and geographical setting of these biblical accounts.
- 1:29Today, our journey takes us to the beautiful hillsides of Israel,
- 1:34where the flowers of the field remind us of something that will outlast
- 1:37every season of life. In Isaiah 40:6-8,
- 1:42the prophet writes, the voice said, cry! And he
- 1:46said, what shall I cry? All flesh is grass,
- 1:50and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of
- 1:53the field. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth,
- 1:58because the Spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it. Surely the
- 2:02people is grass, the grass withereth, the flower fadeth,
- 2:06but the word of our God shall stand forever.
- 2:11To appreciate the beauty of these words, we need to understand
- 2:15something about the land in which they were written. For much of the year,
- 2:18the landscape of Israel can appear dry and barren.
- 2:23The hillsides are brown, the ground is hard,
- 2:26and the fields seem almost lifeless. But when
- 2:30the winter rains arrive, everything begins to change.
- 2:34Grass springs up from the earth.
- 2:37Wildflowers begin to bloom. Hillsides that appeared
- 2:41lifeless suddenly become covered with color. One of the most striking
- 2:45flowers found in Israel is the red poppy.
- 2:49In the springtime, these beautiful flowers can blanket entire
- 2:53fields, creating brilliant displays of red
- 2:57against the green countryside. It's a breathtaking sight.
- 3:01But there's something remarkable about these flowers— their beauty doesn't
- 3:05last. Individual poppy blossoms may last only
- 3:09a few days, And as the rainy season gives way
- 3:13to the dry heat of summer, the once beautiful landscape
- 3:17begins to change. The grass withers. The flowers
- 3:21fade. The brilliant colors disappear.
- 3:25What seems so alive and beautiful was
- 3:29only here for a season. And that is precisely
- 3:33the picture Isaiah wants us to see. He writes,
- 3:37all flesh is grass, and the goodliness thereof is
- 3:40as the flower of the field. In other words, we are
- 3:44the flowers. Our lives, with all their beauty,
- 3:48accomplishment, strength, and opportunities, are temporary.
- 3:53There is a season when we are young and strong,
- 3:57a season when we are busy building our lives,
- 4:00raising our families, pursuing our dreams,
- 4:03and making our plans. And somewhere along the
- 4:07way, we begin to imagine that life will always be this way.
- 4:12But the years pass more quickly than we expect.
- 4:16Children grow up. Strength begins to fade.
- 4:20Familiar faces disappear.
- 4:23Seasons of life that once seemed as though they would last
- 4:26forever become memories. The Bible reminds
- 4:30us in James 4:14, for what is your
- 4:35life? It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little
- 4:38time and then vanisheth away.
- 4:42Now, that is not a message intended to rob us of
- 4:45the joy of living. It is a reminder to recognize
- 4:49the value of the life God has given us. The brevity
- 4:53of life ought to make us more intentional about how we live it.
- 4:58Every day is a gift from God. Every opportunity
- 5:02to serve him is precious. Every moment we have with
- 5:05those we love is worth cherishing. And the things that matter
- 5:09most are often the things we are most tempted to
- 5:13neglect. There's another fascinating detail in Isaiah's
- 5:17description. He says, the grass withereth, the flower
- 5:21fadeth, because the Spirit of the Lord bloweth upon
- 5:25it. The Hebrew word translated spirit
- 5:28is ruach, a word that can also mean wind
- 5:32or breath. Now think about that picture.
- 5:35A flower may stand beautifully in the field,
- 5:39but it cannot withstand the changing seasons.
- 5:43The same wind that blows across the countryside reminds us
- 5:47just how fragile life can be. And the word
- 5:50Isaiah uses directs our attention to something greater
- 5:54than the flower itself. Our lives are in the hands
- 5:58of the God who gave us life. We may make
- 6:02our plans and arrange our schedules, but ultimately, every breath
- 6:07we take is a gift from Him.
- 6:10Yet Isaiah does not leave us with the fading flowers.
- 6:14In fact, the most encouraging part of this passage comes at the very end: The
- 6:18grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but
- 6:23the word of our God shall stand forever. What a contrast!
- 6:27The flowers fade, God's word remains.
- 6:31Generations come and go, but God's truth does
- 6:34not change. Kingdoms rise and fall,
- 6:38nations change, cultures shift,
- 6:42human opinions come and go, but the word of God
- 6:45stands forever. And there is a wonderful lesson
- 6:49here for every follower of Christ. Don't build your
- 6:53life around things that cannot last. Build your
- 6:57life upon the word of God that will never fail.
- 7:01We live in a world that places enormous value on things that
- 7:05are temporary. We spend our lives pursuing success,
- 7:09accumulating possessions, protecting our reputations,
- 7:13trying to hold on to the things that time will eventually take
- 7:17away from us. None of those things can provide the lasting
- 7:20security our souls need. But the
- 7:25promises of God are different. When everything around us is
- 7:28changing, his word remains true. When circumstances
- 7:32are uncertain, his promises remain sure.
- 7:36When our strength begins to fail, His faithfulness
- 7:40never does. And when we face the reality of
- 7:44death, his word points us to the one who
- 7:48conquered it. The Apostle Peter returned to Isaiah's words
- 7:52centuries later in 1 Peter 1:24-25.
- 7:57Peter wrote, for all flesh is as grass,
- 8:01and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
- 8:04The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away,
- 8:08but the word of the Lord endureth forever.
- 8:12And this is the word which by the gospel is preached
- 8:15unto you. Did you catch that final statement?
- 8:19Peter connects the enduring word of God with the message
- 8:23of the gospel. The greatest hope we have
- 8:27is not found in trying to make this life last forever.
- 8:31It is found in the eternal life that Jesus Christ
- 8:35offers to everyone who will trust him. And that
- 8:38brings us to one final picture from this scripture.
- 8:42The Bible begins with the Spirit of God moving upon the
- 8:46face of the waters at creation, and near the very end
- 8:50of the Bible, we hear this beautiful invitation in Revelation 22:17:
- 8:54And the Spirit and the bride say, come. And let him that
- 8:58heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst
- 9:02come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of
- 9:06life freely. What a wonderful invitation!
- 9:10The same God who created life offers eternal
- 9:14life through his Son Jesus Christ.
- 9:17And unlike the flowers of the field, the life he gives
- 9:21will never fade away. Perhaps today you are enjoying
- 9:25a wonderful season of life. Be grateful for it.
- 9:30Use it for God's glory. Don't take it for granted.
- 9:33Perhaps you are walking through a season of change,
- 9:37watching things you once depended upon begin to fade.
- 9:41Take courage, because the God whose word stands
- 9:45forever is still faithful. Or perhaps
- 9:49you have never personally placed your faith in Jesus Christ.
- 9:53There is no greater decision you could make than to
- 9:57receive the gift of eternal life that he freely offers. One day,
- 10:01the flowers of this earth will have bloomed for the last time.
- 10:06The seasons of our lives will have come and gone,
- 10:09and all the things we thought were so important will be left
- 10:13behind. But God's word still will
- 10:16be standing, and those who have trusted Christ will be with
- 10:20him forever. So the next time you see a
- 10:24beautiful flower blooming in a field, take a moment to admire
- 10:28its beauty and then remember the lesson it teaches: life
- 10:32is brief, eternity is real, and the word
- 10:36of our God shall stand forever.
- 10:40Thank you for joining us today on Traveler's Tales. My prayer
- 10:44is that today's journey will encourage you to treasure
- 10:48the time God has given you and to anchor your life more firmly
- 10:51in the truth of His Word. There is so much more to discover
- 10:55in Scripture, and we would love to help you continue that journey.
