Transcript
- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is Deb icky.
- 0:19Rambles were a couple of friends review, Korean dramas and I'm
- 0:23back for another really emotional episode.
- 0:26I'm sure this is going to be really emotional for both of us.
- 0:29I'm joined by Paloma from dramas Over Flowers podcast.
- 0:33How are you? I'm good.
- 0:36Hello everyone. It's Sam.
- 0:38It's an honor to be invited hijack.
- 0:40Yes, I'm so happy for you to be here.
- 0:43We're going to, I do want to apologize, like upfront because
- 0:47we're going to be reviewing youth of May, and I just want to
- 0:51apologize. Like, I'm so sorry that I made.
- 0:55You watch this show in its entirety and I'm just sorry.
- 1:00Sorry, I'm so sorry. Um, no.
- 1:03It was on my bucket list. Kind of I you just give you the
- 1:06actual reason he needed to give me the push, I needed to finally
- 1:10got you. So for those who haven't
- 1:13listened to dramas Over Flowers for some odd reason, I'm just
- 1:18going to ask you. How did you get into K?
- 1:20Dramas like what's your origin story?
- 1:23My origin story was that I was strict but by Michael cause she
- 1:29told me. So, we bought bonded over
- 1:31fantasy books, so the stuff and dragons and like Wizards and
- 1:35stuff. At one point, we were both
- 1:37hooked on that. Colin Morgan, Wizardry show
- 1:40Merlin, right. We were big fun girls.
- 1:44She got me like signed photographs and stuff from like
- 1:48conferences. That's how--that's.
- 1:49That was our friendship and then at one point some like 10 more
- 1:54than 10 years ago. Now she was like, you know, I
- 1:58think you're going to like this Drama.
- 2:00It's a Korean drama. Watch it.
- 2:02And in my head, anything Korean was very much film centered.
- 2:06I had no idea what Korean dramas were.
- 2:08I just thought, like, I don't know, like Asian movies, they
- 2:13really complicated movies that come out during award season.
- 2:15So, something like, just a, you only hear about them at, like,
- 2:18these artsy film viewing. It's all right.
- 2:23I had a very annoying cousin who was really into East Asian
- 2:27movies and she was the art serious personal.
- 2:29News. So I just had a bad Association.
- 2:32I like the cousin, like your faves.
- 2:36Yeah. Okay, so she was trying to get
- 2:38me to watch coffee prince but what I ended up watching first
- 2:42was your beautiful and it was nothing like what I was
- 2:48expecting. It was my different and I was I
- 2:54was hooked. I think I stumbled a little of
- 2:56the first episode because I just I couldn't I was so used to
- 3:01Western depiction of women that go minam or other go menu.
- 3:09We played by Buck. Whoa.
- 3:12Whoa. Oh my God.
- 3:13Bachchan is functioning. Yeah, I can't believe are four
- 3:16quarters me for a second. I'll play by box and he was
- 3:19really different. Like she was so gentle and she
- 3:24was kind of like a bunny rabbit and I was like, where do I give
- 3:28you what you bought something? That shows a full-grown woman
- 3:32like this. And then I actually started
- 3:34watching the rest of the drama and I'm it broke.
- 3:37A lot of my preconceptions preconceived notions.
- 3:41Yeah. And like really broke them, like
- 3:44just smashed them to Smithereens.
- 3:45And I was grateful, because if finally opened up space for me
- 3:50to watch stories that were at, because I was desperately
- 3:54waiting for, I don't know. Indian movies to just make
- 3:58content that appeals to me more. Western television, western
- 4:02movies to make content that work for more but I couldn't find
- 4:04them. I did find stuff that I liked in
- 4:08books, but you finish books really fast and your favorite
- 4:12authors don't write, you know, new installations offer enough,
- 4:15so you're starved but kdrama land was not only giving me a
- 4:19new type of Storytelling. They was so prolific they were
- 4:23coming out with like a teen dramas every court at that
- 4:27point. Now it's like a teen dramas
- 4:28every week but But it was just it was like a smorgasbord and I
- 4:33was just kind of handed a fork. So thank you, sir.
- 4:39She totally made me expect that. I was, I don't know.
- 4:42I was expecting something more fantasy who needed a ride.
- 4:45I don't know why. She told me how she knew that
- 4:48this would work for me but I think eventually in our more
- 4:52recent conversations, we kind of figured out that we have found
- 4:56in our experience that the most die-hard career My fans also
- 5:01tend to be people who really love literature and that could
- 5:04be genres Pacific literature, or it could be just smutty
- 5:08literature. I could be Bromance, it could be
- 5:11three, right? Could be Space Opera anything,
- 5:12but they really like storytelling and wow, that's,
- 5:17that's, that's okay. Wow, I love your story.
- 5:20Thank you for sharing. And the whole thing about the
- 5:23people that love kdramas tend to like literature.
- 5:26You're talking to a reformed English, major, and I for most
- 5:31of my career, I was in publishing so there's that
- 5:36Funny, you should mention your beautiful and coffee prince,
- 5:38because we're covering both this season of the podcast because we
- 5:43keep going back in time to Dupree 2015 kdramas because I
- 5:47don't know if you've seen this sentiment online.
- 5:50Yeah, those. Yeah, those are really good
- 5:52ones, but the sentiment I've seen online is that people don't
- 5:57want to watch older kdramas. I can't watch anything.
- 5:59That's pre 2015. Like it's just paint.
- 6:02And I'm like, okay, so obvious people Well, I don't want to
- 6:07name any names but even though I don't have any names.
- 6:10But I'm here to say it just to advocate for these older
- 6:14kdramas, and I love to revisit some of these ones.
- 6:18Like you're beautiful and coffee prince.
- 6:20So keep an eye on the feed because we're going to go back
- 6:23in time. Again, the first few kdramas
- 6:26that we did this season were pre 2015, but not as far back as
- 6:31coffee prince. So we're going to keep going.
- 6:34But this this one that we're going to review today, youth of
- 6:38May is not pre 2015, it is closer in time to the present
- 6:42day release, even though it is kind of retro because of, you
- 6:46know, when it takes place and stuff.
- 6:48So, thank you, Paloma. I am so excited for you to be
- 6:52here and we're going to do some housekeeping, really fast.

- 7:37Thank you so much for being here.
- 7:39And without further Ado we're going to get into the
- 7:41non-spoiler section of Youth of May.
- 7:45So I'll read the Asian Wiki synopsis and it goes like this
- 7:49in May 1980 during the turbulent times of the Guangzhou Uprising.
- 7:53Heath am young, I fall in love their love, seems destined by
- 7:56Fate. Hitha is a medical student who
- 7:59entered medical school at the top of his class.
- 8:01He seems like an easygoing person but he also has an
- 8:04unyielding spirit and obstinacy. See Myung Yi has worked as a
- 8:07nurse for the past three years. She is a lovely person who
- 8:10stands up against what is not fair.
- 8:13So this show aired originally from May to June 20 21, of
- 8:18course it aired in May, it is 12 episodes long, not that long at
- 8:24all and it is directed by song Mean.
- 8:26Yep. He's directed doctor prisoner
- 8:29from 2019, my drama list. Also lists heed that edict young
- 8:35as a Doctor. I have no idea if that's
- 8:38accurate but I figured I'd just mention it.
- 8:40Here you have made was written by econ and they did.
- 8:45They also wrote spy from 2015. So I do want to point out that
- 8:50these, these people like the directors potential directors,
- 8:53multiple and the writer are kind of largely untested.
- 8:58They don't have a lot to their filmography these and econ like
- 9:03the Spy thing from Tony. 50, obviously, it's about a spy for
- 9:09North Korea. So I think this is kind of in
- 9:12their wheelhouse if you think about it that way, but yeah, not
- 9:15a lot to go off of in terms of what they did before Youth of a
- 9:20but let's talk about. Yeah, let's talk about this cast
- 9:24though. So we have either here on he
- 9:26plays, he thinks he's had a wonderful gear because he has
- 9:34starred in The Glory from It flakes.
- 9:37So we've seen him consistently from twenty twenty two, twenty
- 9:40three, twenty three in that show.
- 9:42He's been in Melancholia. Sweet Home 18 Again hotel de
- 9:45luna clean with passion for now and still 17.
- 9:49This is basically my introduction to either he owned.
- 9:53I don't know if. Yeah.
- 9:55I had not seen him in anything else.
- 9:56I had like totally like bypassed all of these kdramas.
- 10:01Well, I did. Yeah.
- 10:03So well, I hate to say, like I bypass them.
- 10:06But I saw him in the glory when part 1 aired.
- 10:08So at the end of 2020 to I saw him, and then which I was like,
- 10:13okay, we have to see more with either he on in it because he's
- 10:17amazing in the glory. And then I started watching this
- 10:22show, Almost concurrently to the glory part to like, very close
- 10:26to 1 part 2, weird, and that was, that's basically all that I
- 10:31had seen him and I hadn't seen still 17.
- 10:34I hadn't seen him in a hotel. DeLuna.
- 10:36Even though I dropped hotel de luna and hadn't seen sweet home
- 10:41yet. So yeah, I like basically never
- 10:45had seen either, he on until this year us live connection
- 10:50that so still 17 was the American one that application
- 10:55was 18. Again.
- 10:56That's why I'm so sorry. 18 again which is your livestock
- 11:03correct. Still 17 is the one.
- 11:05What is his name from High School Musical?
- 11:07You know, I know I love him so much or at least at that point.
- 11:10I did. It has Chancellor in it.
- 11:12He's a grown-up version. Oh my God, Chandler younger
- 11:16ones, named Zach, no, Zach Efron.
- 11:19Yes I got it. That's right.
- 11:20Yeah, yeah. So they adapted the still 17,
- 11:25movie into a kdrama and so he Stars either he on stars in that
- 11:31back in 2018 T to that. Yeah, so you had seen him In
- 11:36that show. Yeah, I figured I'd foster home
- 11:38and tell people 17, and okay. I ended up watching every one of
- 11:44his dramas. Just, I wasn't looking for him,
- 11:46but I was just watching everything that he was in.
- 11:50I was watching sweet home, I was watching.
- 11:53Oh, what is that drama that, he their hotel de luna where
- 11:57initially because I had seen him as this supporting roles best
- 12:02friend kind of like a really minor But in 3117, so very easy
- 12:08to sort of Passover. And he was a young boy in that
- 12:12point. And so right after that, I think
- 12:14I saw him in Hotel Del Luna, hurt her.
- 12:17Ha ha Hotel Del Luna where he was the past, love of the main
- 12:23protagonist and he was in his proper Warrior Garb and stuff
- 12:26with like the hair and that is very deeper but it's, I did not
- 12:32recognize him at first. He it's like he had a sudden
- 12:37growth spurt or something. But um, he didn't I mean I think
- 12:41it was just like a your apart but just the this this guy, he
- 12:47has, he chooses his projects. Well, he didn't he tends to
- 12:51really focus on the emotional core of his characters like he
- 12:55wants characters. Will he can cry and laugh and
- 12:58like, properly amort. He does not go for like
- 13:01straightforward. Tchibo leak are honestly his
- 13:03character in. Theory is like the most
- 13:07conventional character. He's chosen as you like he's
- 13:11basically Archibald savior of the hero in which is you know,
- 13:15but I say let us say let's Okay. Okay so yeah are we I loved
- 13:25watching him grow as an actor, I loved seeing him in these
- 13:28projects but I just wasn't expecting him and he would just
- 13:30crop up and then I started looking out for his project.
- 13:35Objects. And I think the first thing that
- 13:37I watched for him was Melancholia which turned out to
- 13:41not exactly what I was expecting, but the cost was so
- 13:47good. I actually ended up watching the
- 13:48entire drama. I for anybody who's watched
- 13:51Melancholia and probably knows why I have reservations.
- 13:55Listen, we can talk and I will agree with all your points.
- 14:00It just that I really like either here in and I really like
- 14:03the actress. He was cast opposite.
- 14:07She was the one from such ww and oh my God, I can't mm so John,
- 14:12uh-huh. So I kind of have to watch it
- 14:14for them. I couldn't I couldn't escape it.
- 14:16But yeah, all of that to say is that I've had people for me on
- 14:22my list for a while. And so when Jazz was like, do
- 14:25you want her to God? And I'm just so damn astronomers
- 14:28like oh okay. So maybe it's time I actually
- 14:32broke my heart. Um, yeah.
- 14:36And that's putting it lightly. Is that?
- 14:38Oh yeah just broke my heart. You casually.
- 14:42It's like you do your own says, right.
- 14:43Like when you when you're when you're it's like it's like he
- 14:47said to his lady. I'm ready to have my heart
- 14:52broken. Like I'm ready to be in pain
- 14:56because it's yeah. Okay, well talking about his
- 15:00lady, his leading lady is going C and she plays Miyagi, I had
- 15:06seen her in a lot actually show. She was in my sassy girl from
- 15:092017. She's been in.
- 15:11Welcome to Waikiki from 2018. The smile has left her eyes.
- 15:15Both love alarm Seasons, sweet home.
- 15:18And most recently in Gigi sohn in 2021.
- 15:22I really enjoyed seeing her in the which part 1, the
- 15:25subversion, which is a movie from 2018.
- 15:28So yeah. How do you see a possibility?
- 15:31That's the only one. I remember Hood in every Yes,
- 15:35she's beating every. I have watched all of these
- 15:37numbers that you just mentioned. I don't remember.
- 15:39I don't know. I remember Lion, the Witch, and
- 15:44this is a phenomenal actor. Yay.
- 15:47I can't believe that she liked it.
- 15:49The Youth of me came out in 2021, right?
- 15:52I can't believe she hasn't been at least in like, I don't know
- 15:5630 other projects that I agree. I agree with that.
- 16:00Like what happened in the last year and a half or so?
- 16:03Why. I haven't I seen her in more and
- 16:07I'm Big O project. Honestly I think in do some she
- 16:10was you know really to reminder role I think Okay, honestly
- 16:16didn't watch enough of this on purpose but but I mean I'm glad
- 16:22Sweet Home is coming up but there's nothing else like uh,
- 16:25huh? Uh, huh?
- 16:26Yeah, yeah, so I agree with ya. She was also the shaman in
- 16:31decision to leave from 2022, which is a parktronic movie,
- 16:36which I have not seen yet. Yeah.
- 16:40You're like. All right.
- 16:42Um, So, I have also some Supporting Cast members but I'll
- 16:50just mention them briefly. So we have e seunggi.
- 16:52You play switch on effectively the second male lead and of
- 16:57course you had a really great year with Hometown Cha-cha-cha
- 17:00and he's been a new me cells crash course in Romance when the
- 17:03Camellia blooms suits. So, he's been in a lot of
- 17:07supporting roles throughout the years.
- 17:09We also have Gloom static as Sudan which is she plays song.
- 17:14These sister in the show and she has been in quite a few movies.
- 17:20And you might have seen her in the age of Shadows.
- 17:22The Last Princess Love Lies assassination, the silence.
- 17:25These are all really poignant movies.
- 17:29So I highly suggest watching any one of these.
- 17:32I actually covered love lies on the patreon feed, so she plays
- 17:37an adult gisaeng and assassination, like, cut me up,
- 17:42that's another one where she was.
- 17:43It's like up. She Is bit parts and some of
- 17:45these movies, but the movies themselves are amazing.
- 17:48So I can only deduce that she picks really great projects.
- 17:52I don't see how to make just of love that.
- 17:54I have not seen the interest of love yet.
- 17:56I've been too busy but I heard terrible things about the show.
- 18:01No, give it a chance. Listen, if you can sit through
- 18:03youth of me, actually. Oh my God.
- 18:05Bad. Don't say that.
- 18:08That's, that's a completely unfair.
- 18:10That's not true. You do of me doesn't like stab
- 18:13you constantly. Throughout its run time, whether
- 18:16the interest of Love kind of does, and it's one of those
- 18:19dramas that you watch. Not, okay, I was about to say
- 18:22because you enjoy pain and that sounded wrong.
- 18:25Now the mask it's because you are okay with like feeling those
- 18:32like the banks that the drama gives you its, you gotcha.
- 18:36On the one hand, it's like really interesting writing on
- 18:39the other hand, by the second half.
- 18:40You really confused about why the lytic is like this However,
- 18:45when it comes to this actress, Comes The Rock was.
- 18:50I think the standout performer, all the actors cast was so good,
- 18:54but booms, Iraq. She turned.
- 18:55What could have been a very conventional Petty jealous?
- 18:58Secondly, there's character, I mean, the writing was good, they
- 19:02handed her really great deal and she turned out to be, she turned
- 19:07out phenomenal. I have so much respect for her
- 19:10the way she portrayed the character and also just Just
- 19:14disappear have a lot of Goodwill towards all right.
- 19:16Now, I'm coming off the interest of Love.
- 19:19Yeah, I think this is my season to watch dramas, that just like
- 19:23stab you. In the last, what, two bonds are
- 19:26washed away, too many of these right now, my God.
- 19:29And then, like youth of May on top of it.
- 19:31Okay. Yeah, so the last three names,
- 19:34I'll shout out is, um, yossef who plays what's her name?
- 19:39Come said Oakes. Dad in the show.
- 19:42He's an odd Russia. You've seen him in so many other
- 19:45projects. I can't even sit here and name
- 19:47them. There's so many you have chemo.
- 19:49And hey, who plays miyagi's dad? So government sees dad also
- 19:56another Audra. She who have you seen a million
- 19:58times? He's amazing.
- 20:01And then I'll shout out. All men suck as honking.
- 20:04Mm and he plays. He tased add effectively the
- 20:09villain. Yes sir.
- 20:13I think we've come to the The end of who the cast is and the
- 20:17director and the writer. So, Bottom.
- 20:20I like what did you think of Youth of me?
- 20:25I don't know. It defies description.
- 20:31I listen, it's hmm for the main leads alone.
- 20:36I would probably watch this drama again, knowing exactly
- 20:40where each bead Falls knowing exactly where my heart breaks
- 20:43and where its source, I would wash it again, the performance
- 20:46was Truly something. Remarkable.
- 20:53But also let me just get this out there, being an
- 20:56international viewer. I'm always fascinated when an
- 20:59entire show has characters speaking in full Regional
- 21:05accent. Oh yeah, this Saturday here was
- 21:10the gwangju saw that he was was mad like I have no idea how
- 21:14accurate it was. What I do know is that they it
- 21:18really helps with the emotional delivery of certain lines like
- 21:23they felt they pulled more because it was spoken in South
- 21:26Korea and I I just I love listening to the dialogue.
- 21:32It was like more musical to me more emotional to me.
- 21:35So yeah, what did I think of it? I could not tell you.
- 21:40I definitely enjoyed it. I enjoyed it a lot.
- 21:45I was not because I was prepared for certain things.
- 21:48I think I enjoyed it more. More.
- 21:50I really genuinely, don't think I don't.
- 21:55We will keep this for the spoiler but okay, no problem, no
- 21:58problem. If it's too spoilery, don't say
- 22:00it yet. So you do you kind of mixed
- 22:03feelings about the show because it was so heightened.
- 22:07No, strong positive feelings. I got you admired everything
- 22:12about it. I can't really nitpick about a
- 22:14trauma like this? Yeah, so the only thing that I
- 22:20would say definitively is that I would recommend this drama to
- 22:24vary. A few people, and only if they
- 22:27have shown that they are in the sort of mental space to watch a
- 22:33certain kind of drama. So, this is not a drama that I
- 22:35would go around, like, pushing people into a cave and locking
- 22:39them. They agree.
- 22:41Yeah, this isn't a one-size-fits-all show.
- 22:45I think you do need to have a strong foundation in kdramas and
- 22:50have watched maybe some of the other sort of period piece.
- 22:55Is in kdrama right now. I'm not talking necessarily
- 22:58about the socks and the ones that happened in the Charleston
- 23:01Dynasty and stuff like that. I really do feel like if you've
- 23:05watched some things that are in the 90s, like I don't know what
- 23:10supplies 2521 is and is instead in the 90s.
- 23:13So if you've seen stuff in that era, I think you might be okay
- 23:18to start some of these that are set in the 80s which are way
- 23:22more politically charged and Way more high stakes and have a lot
- 23:28more that you might need to look up, or understand to get grasped
- 23:33the full like, importance and nature of what these characters
- 23:39are going through. So, I agree completely, I would
- 23:43never like sit here and be like, you got to watch you two met and
- 23:46you just watched, I don't know crash-landing on you yesterday.
- 23:49So no, that's not. I don't think you could handle
- 23:52it. So, Be, I walked into this
- 23:58knowing, that it was a sad story.
- 24:01Okay, that was like, the full extent that I that I knew about
- 24:06the show is that it had a sad story and these two had a
- 24:11romance going. So I was like, okay, great.
- 24:14Then I get into, it's in 1980. First of all, it's like right in
- 24:201980 and I go, this is not looking good.
- 24:22This is not looking good at all. I was Like so I thought it was
- 24:26like late 80s, like, maybe 88-89 know.
- 24:29It is like 1980. So I go, oh shit.
- 24:34This is not gonna end well, then I kind of felt like this was,
- 24:41how do I put it like each episode was sort of gaining a
- 24:46lot of momentum and having a lot of juice and sort of Leaning
- 24:53into some sort of disaster that's going to happen later in
- 24:58the show. I don't think it takes like a
- 25:00rocket scientist kind of understand like the workings of
- 25:03the writing and how they structured each episode and how
- 25:07they're focusing a lot on the date.
- 25:10And oh, this person can only come, you know, get transferred
- 25:14to the hospital on this date. And I'm like it seems like dates
- 25:17are really important so then I think around episode 6 or 7 I
- 25:24was like, I know exactly what's going to happen.
- 25:27Like it just hit me from, you know, all these years of
- 25:30watching kdramas and knowing about certain historical things,
- 25:35like the kwangju uprising Sasha Massacre, I was like, oh shit,
- 25:40this is going to culminate in this Guangzhou Uprising
- 25:44happening in the middle of everything and it's going to be
- 25:48a train wreck. And so I said to myself, I did.
- 25:51This Tick Tock around episode, I was just about to watch episode
- 25:549. And I kind of said, I said this
- 25:59feels like watching the Titanic for the first time.
- 26:03This feels like watching Jack and Rose board, the Titanic and
- 26:07you're like, I freaking love this.
- 26:09Love story, but I'm waiting for them to hit the iceberg, right?
- 26:15This is what it felt like to watch this show.
- 26:17Like to a tee, and I would not recommend And like a Titanic is
- 26:23one of those like Global. Like everybody knows what
- 26:25happened and it felt like very similar like, you know, they're
- 26:29focusing on the date a lot in the Titanic and they're focusing
- 26:33on the date a lot in Youth of May and you're just devastated
- 26:39by the end of the show and I loved the show, but I don't know
- 26:45if I would ever watch it again. I might do the same thing as I
- 26:52do watching the Titanic which is I'll watch the first hour and a
- 26:55half, right? As soon as they hit the iceberg,
- 27:00I'm like okay I'm out like that's I can't watch anymore
- 27:04because who wants to go through that heartbreak and Devastation
- 27:10all over again. So for my mental health, this is
- 27:14a form of self care. If I ever watched youth of me
- 27:16again, I'll probably stop watching.
- 27:18Being around episode 8 or 9. Because anything war is, it's
- 27:24just torture. This is so sad and this is not
- 27:28to spoil anything about what happens in the end.
- 27:32We will talk about that in the spoiler section, but I just
- 27:35found that this show was, how do I put it severely tragic?
- 27:43That's all I'll say. Yeah, so yeah, I loved it but it
- 27:48was It was painful, extremely painful.
- 27:52Like you said, the cast was amazing.
- 27:54I thought the acting was fantastic.
- 27:57I thought the writing was unassailable, I thought they did
- 28:00very well pacing this, and building them up and tearing
- 28:05them down. And the villain was a proper
- 28:10villian. And the circumstances are, you
- 28:15know, that's the conceit of the show, right?
- 28:17Is that they're star-crossed lovers and they have no idea.
- 28:21You're literally watching like a Romeo and Juliet thing play out.
- 28:24You're like, I don't know how to help.
- 28:27There's no way to help them, like you can't undo, what's
- 28:30happened? And I actually thought Going
- 28:36into the final few episodes. That maybe they would do like, a
- 28:39revisionist. Take on the gwangju massacre.
- 28:43Like, have you seen Once Upon a Time in Hollywood?
- 28:46That my have, but with the one I was thinking of was Moonlight
- 28:52drawn by close. Yes.
- 28:57But that's an alternate title. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:05Write that data to revision over there.
- 29:07And I think they had to because the final like third of the
- 29:13drama had like really started lagging.
- 29:15And people were like, coming out with pitchforks.
- 29:17Like after this, you J was a sad ending.
- 29:22Yeah. So I thought maybe they'll do
- 29:25revisionist. Take on this terrible atrocity,
- 29:30that happened in night. May 19 1980.
- 29:33And no, no, no, no. No, they they do not do that.
- 29:37So oh God. I don't know what else to say.
- 29:42Like, I don't think we can. Well, let's talk about the
- 29:44gwangju uprising and maybe some comps.
- 29:49If you don't want to dive in to Youth of May.
- 29:52Right now, like maybe some of these other ones might be okay
- 29:56for you to, like, kind of dip your feet into this era of
- 30:00Korean history, but so the gwangju uprising.
- 30:05In between May 18th and May 27th 1980.
- 30:09The uprising was one of the largest uprisings in the country
- 30:12as students rebelled against the authoritarian government.
- 30:16Because at the time, it was a military dictatorship.
- 30:19Nearly a quarter of a million people participated in the
- 30:22rebellion. And although it was brutally
- 30:24repressed, and initially unsuccessful bringing about
- 30:28democratic reform in South Korea, it's considered to be
- 30:31such a huge pivotal moment in the South Korean struggle for
- 30:34Democracy. This is really annoying to me,
- 30:37but I'll say this, say this, these numbers is that officially
- 30:43over 100 people were killed. However, it's estimated from
- 30:49gwangju, citizens that the death toll is over without like
- 30:53several thousand. So the government's numbers are
- 30:57about like a little over 100 people died.
- 30:59And in reality it's probably thousands of people were
- 31:03murdered You mentioned this before we started the podcast
- 31:08but yes, the US government had a hand in the gwangju uprising
- 31:12because at the time there was a strong military presence from
- 31:16the US in Korea, there still is because it was not too far
- 31:20removed from the Korean War. And so the government, the
- 31:26corrupt authoritarian government did get permission from the u.s.
- 31:31to do this. This Uprising took While the
- 31:35uprising and gwangju with Federal soldiers, basically not
- 31:40like local police or anything. And the US said, yeah, sure.
- 31:43Do what you have to do. So there is that to be perfectly
- 31:47Fair. They were federally funded
- 31:49soldiers. They weren't like American
- 31:51soldiers. So yeah.
- 31:52It was local soldiers but like federally-funded, they exactly.
- 31:56Yeah. The other interesting thing that
- 31:58I found out a while back was that the u.s. always claimed
- 32:03that the Information. They were getting from the South
- 32:06Korean government at the time was basically misinformation.
- 32:10They had like, basically mischaracterized the uprising.
- 32:14He were saying, I have no doubt, I have no doubt.
- 32:18He was saying that it's spreading everywhere.
- 32:20They go to destabilize the government and around that time,
- 32:23they have the US was involved in what I don't want to get too
- 32:28much into it. But basically the Middle Eastern
- 32:30politics happening and Rebellions and uprisings were
- 32:36spreading massively and they didn't want a similar situation
- 32:40happening in Korea where they had a really strong base and
- 32:42they wanted to keep that base because of China and Russia.
- 32:46And so while they say that it was a misrepresentation that
- 32:50caused them to, you know, they don't exactly say they gave the
- 32:54go-ahead but hero it's an excuse that's used.
- 32:57It's also being admitted and said that the u.s. knew that,
- 33:02you know, What South Korea was saying, wasn't actually true.
- 33:05But it supported because the Red Scare was still very much
- 33:10present. Yes, baby.
- 33:13Yeah. So they were like, we kind of
- 33:15know this government. They are brutal and all of that
- 33:18but it's a devil. We know we don't want this
- 33:20destabilize. So we will just quell the
- 33:22students instead. So that's kind of like a
- 33:24background on ya little bit of u.s. involvement.
- 33:29Yes. So the Guangzhou uprising, How
- 33:34do I put it? It paved the way for, like, the
- 33:371988, 89 the Democracy that came in, but this is the Titanic that
- 33:46I'm talking about. Then, you know, in the show,
- 33:50everything's leading up to May teenth and the days that follow
- 33:56and it's pretty impressive to see how they recreated this in.
- 34:01What I consider, painstaking detail.
- 34:03Detail too. And they didn't even go as far
- 34:07as they could have with the uprising.
- 34:10And if you see some footage from the uprising you're like, this
- 34:14is like it puts it stiffens you because you're just like, oh my
- 34:18God, they didn't go as far as they could have at all but they
- 34:23presented it as well as they they could have.
- 34:27Like, considering you can't put everything you want to on TV in
- 34:31Korea. There are like certain Laws and
- 34:33regulations that you have to follow.
- 34:35And the director said, I thought that I had to approach it
- 34:41carefully. In general I wanted to express
- 34:43the truth without any inaccuracies or distortions if
- 34:46you watch youth of Navy is intendant's aren't portrayed in
- 34:49detail which I would agree. They're not in detail, it's not
- 34:52gratuitous but you know it is to get the point.
- 34:56It gets the point across for sure.
- 34:59He also says there are still people around us who have
- 35:01experiences and thoughts of those incidents.
- 35:03It's, although they may each have different memories.
- 35:05It's something we can't make up. As we please, I approached it
- 35:08carefully so I think that's pretty.
- 35:12He seemed to have wanted to take as much of a respectful angle on
- 35:17it as possible and even as a foreign viewer I I sort of
- 35:22understood that while watching you know he didn't go full James
- 35:28Cameron with it like you know if you watch Titanic but yeah.
- 35:34Do you have any thoughts about was really smart in keeping the
- 35:39lens of the story entirely focused on this couple?
- 35:43And their immediate surroundings, it's like a
- 35:46spotlight. Following just them around.
- 35:48Like the uprising was happening around them.
- 35:50Everything was happening around them.
- 35:51But instead of telling the story of the uprising, he was telling
- 35:54the story of these two people caught, you know, within this
- 35:59situation. Yeah.
- 36:00So that that is smart. I don't actually think the story
- 36:05ever reviewers away from, you know, this Central concede like
- 36:11it never becomes like, you know, long montages of like, military
- 36:16operation happening or like, you know, rebellions and other
- 36:19parts. That's simply not the focus of
- 36:21the story. The focus of the story is like,
- 36:23vulnerability of like innocent people living their lives
- 36:27dreaming, their dreams, having their homes falling in love.
- 36:31And, you know, sort of Resisting the petty operations of family
- 36:36and social class. And then suddenly having like
- 36:39the tsunami sweeping them their feet.
- 36:42It's it's kind of like it's like the tiny existence of people
- 36:50versus like an inevitable tragedy.
- 36:54It's yeah I thought he was very smart in the way he wrote the
- 36:57story. Yeah I'm sorry I don't actually
- 36:59know who wrote the story. Oh no.
- 37:01That was the director of those talking about.
- 37:03About kind of how he worked in worked about.
- 37:06It was the screen guard. It was he going, I'm sorry.
- 37:08Mmm. Yeah, so there are some other
- 37:11key dramas, they cover this era of the 1980s and that would be
- 37:16probably like, reply 1988, which also has like one of the, one of
- 37:21the girls. The sister of the main character
- 37:25is a protester in like 1988. And so that's a huge deal and
- 37:29the family dealing with that and being very fearful of the
- 37:32consequences. Is of her being involved in
- 37:36this, these political rallies and stuff like that.
- 37:38You could also if you feel so inclined, watch Snowdrop which
- 37:43is sort of a bastardization of this era as well.
- 37:47We do have a scathing review of Snowdrop on the feed if you want
- 37:53to scroll back in your podcast feed, I was telling bottom up we
- 37:56just really ripped into Snowdrop not because of like the story.
- 38:03Or e or the premise or anything about it.
- 38:05It was like the execution and the decisions that they made
- 38:10were just not not okay. So we had a really fun time
- 38:14actually watching so dress by the political problems and
- 38:19discussions around. That story.
- 38:21I think the drama would have had a lot more supportive.
- 38:25Her actually told a cohesive story, if the story itself was
- 38:29good, if I don't like I'm telling you, we I went through
- 38:34it watching Snowdrop and trying to not.
- 38:38I mean anyway long story short, go back to scroll back in your
- 38:43podcast feed solution. So that one it was interesting.
- 38:47So I think we've come to the end of our general thoughts on youth
- 38:50of May. And at this point, we're going
- 38:52to break for spoilers because it's just time.
- 38:57It's way too high time that we get into spoilers.
- 38:59So if you care to be spoiled, don't listen on.
- 39:03If you don't care and you've watched get the met before stick
- 39:06around, we'll be right back after this.
- 39:15You want to come in? Okay, bottom.
- 39:17What we're on the other side of spoiler.
- 39:18So, anything goes, what would you like to talk about first in
- 39:23this spoiler section? Oh, I think, okay, so I know
- 39:33there is a thing that happens, so the end of the drama that is,
- 39:38it's a tragedy that we've been talking about, like, the
- 39:40Heartbreak and all of that stuff.
- 39:41Mmm, I'm the our beam couple he pay and monkey, they don't know
- 39:49that that's coming. What they, so they don't know
- 39:53that. There's a time limit on their
- 39:54romance, but they actually had a different time limit on their
- 39:57romance like young, he had Ambitions of going and studying
- 40:02medicine abroad. So when they first met each
- 40:05other, which by the way we have to talk about how absurd your
- 40:08daughter will their first meeting.
- 40:09Oh my God, stop. When they decided that they
- 40:16would date kind of finally, it was with the understanding that
- 40:21this is like a limited time. They would be together for a
- 40:24limited time before, right? He left and this intensity of
- 40:31their relationship was because if you think about it, it was
- 40:34just a matter of what 3 or 4 weeks that they knew each other.
- 40:37But yeah, so tality of their. Yes, and shape of like, from the
- 40:41moment, he How fast the very end and the repercussions like the
- 40:46Resonance of that that lasted for decades afterwards.
- 40:50It's just God something. As and the I loved your
- 40:54comparison to the Titanic because oh my God, exactly the
- 40:58same. There was an artificial sort of
- 41:01like limit to their relationship because Rose was engaged to this
- 41:05asshat brand, right? And they always knew that their
- 41:10relationship was like, not. Thing that could last but they
- 41:13didn't realize that that was not the I wasn't getting.
- 41:17Yeah. It wasn't it.
- 41:18Yeah. But that also intensified their
- 41:20relationship as brief as, you know, fleeting ephemeral as it
- 41:24was. And I'm not yeah, yeah.
- 41:28She's going to go to Germany to study abroad and become a
- 41:32doctor, I believe. And I was like, why does she
- 41:35want to go to Germany in 1980? I was like, oh my God.
- 41:39Who wants to do that? But anyway, I think he's in it
- 41:44at one point because, yeah, wouldn't let you take admission
- 41:49unless you studying to be a doctor.
- 41:50I think she was going there to be a nurse though, because
- 41:53that's because she made that distinction like Kareem medical
- 41:58schools only let you apply if you're studying to be a doctor.
- 42:02So that's right. Yeah.
- 42:04I think that she was like I don't want to be a full-on
- 42:06doctor, but I like I wanted to agree.
- 42:08So she was like, I'll just study abroad because The system wasn't
- 42:12set up for her and it essentially.
- 42:16So he asks her, why don't we State for the for the entirety
- 42:21of may? Like, let's just State until the
- 42:23end of May? And I was, I mean, he's
- 42:27adorable. When he's when he asked her
- 42:28this, he's like halfway drunk, he's been serenading her on the
- 42:31guitar. And she's like, I'll let you
- 42:34know when you're sober. And that just kind of kicks off
- 42:37the rest of their sort of Quick Romeo and Juliet, ask love story
- 42:44because yes they fall in love in the span of like really in a few
- 42:49days, they're in love with each other, like irrevocably in love
- 42:52with each other. It is They cannot be separated
- 42:57even though they end up getting really just put through the
- 43:01wringer. Even before May 18th comes
- 43:03around, they are devoted to each other.
- 43:07So it's but you believe it. I think this is the great.
- 43:12The great thing that the show did is that I fully believe in
- 43:15their love story and in their Devotion to one another and that
- 43:20they you know, sometimes you watch a kdrama and people fall
- 43:23in love and you're like I don't really get Get like why these
- 43:26two are together. I don't get like why they sort
- 43:28of gravitated to one another and like I don't really I don't get
- 43:33it like, why? I don't believe it.
- 43:35I don't buy in, I bought in completely.
- 43:39So I bought stock, I was setting up shop.
- 43:43I was like ready to go, and you mentioned their meat, cute, like
- 43:48their me, cute is so cute. What is it?
- 43:53She It's a fake. Dating Trope, mistaken, identity
- 43:58Trope, she goes to, yes she goes exactly like business proposal.
- 44:04She takes her friend's place on this blind date and he sees her
- 44:10like performing emergency of help on this kid that just got
- 44:16run over in the street right near the hotel but they were
- 44:19supposed to meet at and he's in the middle of a full-on panic
- 44:23attack because he As trauma of his own.
- 44:27And he even though he's a doctor he's like paralyzed and can't do
- 44:30anything but she jumps into action and she looks fabulous
- 44:34doing it. I'm helping this kid in the
- 44:37street and he spends like a few minutes waiting for her in the
- 44:42lobby of this in this Cafe area in this hotel, thinking I really
- 44:48need to. I hope I mean to meet that girl
- 44:50again because she was amazing and lo and behold she sits down
- 44:53for the first date. I'm like, oh my God, like, he's
- 44:57immediately like, oh my God. Hey, it's her.
- 45:01So thrilled out like everything. See, the episode ends at just
- 45:06him grinning ear to your like staring at hoping, like Chuck
- 45:11Potter. I like how how is this miracle?
- 45:18And it's perfect because Everything from the music to
- 45:23just the way the camera Zooms in on either humans face and just
- 45:27doesn't leave because land. Is this guy has such great
- 45:30control over his facial expressions.
- 45:32Oh my God, I'm going to use my own.
- 45:36He is sitting there very confused about this guy who's
- 45:39just staring at her and Grand Greening so hard.
- 45:43Oh my God, that's perfect. So he immediately attaches
- 45:47himself to her and everything that she tries to do Very
- 45:51similar to business proposal. She's trying to stink the date
- 45:55and he doesn't care. Like, he knows that she's a good
- 46:00person. He knows that she's faking it
- 46:04and trying to like, get him to run away from her.
- 46:07And he's not having it. He's like, I'm here to stay.
- 46:11Like she's like, I want beer and instead of tea on the day.
- 46:15And he's like, okay, cool. Like I'll take some to pick
- 46:18every single thing that she does.
- 46:21Is only enhancing his intrigued about her so I loved it.
- 46:27I loved that she is so sort of precious and a very perfect
- 46:35archetype of what a woman should be in that time period.
- 46:39Especially and even. So she is subverting a lot of
- 46:45things in just her ambition and her trying to be A nurse and her
- 46:51being very decisive in high intensity situations.
- 46:58You know, she's very quick in, you know, it do performing,
- 47:03emergency services, and just being so available and stuff
- 47:08like that. I just found that really
- 47:09fascinating that even though she's very feminine, she's
- 47:12always dressing in skirts and dresses and stuff and she's very
- 47:16soft-spoken. And she just On top of that, she
- 47:21has goals and Ambitions of her own, and she wants to study
- 47:24abroad. And she has fractured
- 47:27relationship with her dad and like, all this stuff makes her
- 47:30seem. Like, she's there trying to
- 47:33like, turn the archetype on its head, which is, which is very
- 47:37cool to see. Hmm, I think you also did a
- 47:40pretty nice middle thing off and the oh this is actually pretty
- 47:45typical of kdramas, but I think they did it, but they clearly
- 47:48well in this I'm where the second male lead and the female
- 47:53lead and on the other side the second female lead and the
- 47:56really kind of they usually see tend to have the same kind of
- 48:00background the same kind of personality all of that.
- 48:03In this particular case it's gonna sell drugs character isn't
- 48:07exactly a second meal is so sorry.
- 48:09Second female lead of the typical breed like she has.
- 48:12Yeah, not much interest in the main lead but Like her
- 48:18personality. And at some point is pointed out
- 48:20that his personality and sodium, which is the say rocks
- 48:26character. Their parties are very similar
- 48:28that they could be siblings. And I like that, I like the, I
- 48:33always like it when they do this.
- 48:35Juxtaposition of here is the perfect person for you,
- 48:39possibly. And then you are actually
- 48:42attracted to somebody who's wholly different.
- 48:45And on paper, it shouldn't work. Work, but it works so well.
- 48:50Yes, yes, I agree completely that, you know, the BFF, I'll
- 48:55call it the BFF. She is sort of built the same
- 49:01way that heat a is and I agree completely that it was very
- 49:04frustrating in the moment. When you're watching, when
- 49:06people surrounding these characters are like, oh, you
- 49:09guys are the same. You guys are perfect for each
- 49:12other and all this stuff and I'm like, shut up.
- 49:14They're not, they're not meant to be.
- 49:17But yeah, absolutely. They are essentially the same
- 49:21person and it's cool. It's interesting.
- 49:26I like this kind of angst in a kdrama where you're like, okay
- 49:30the person who's supposed to be with him, who by All rights
- 49:35should be with him and especially now with like all of
- 49:38these forces pushing them together, they're still like
- 49:42like rebelling, you know, like when a kid like is having a
- 49:45tantrum and they look like Arch their back on the floor and
- 49:48stuff like that was literally both of them with this
- 49:51relationship trying to get out of it and, you know, get to
- 49:57where they want to be. He wants to be with me only.
- 50:00She wants to be a rebel. You know.
- 50:03She wants to lead the charge on all of these protests and be a
- 50:08revolutionary and it's very cool to see.
- 50:13She fell found that the BFF reminded me of Of oh my God, mr.
- 50:19Sunshine. What's her name?
- 50:22Oh my God. From 25:21.
- 50:25What is her name? Oh, hold on.
- 50:27In Theory, Game Theory. Thank you.
- 50:30Cantonese character in mr. Sunshine, felt a lot like the
- 50:35BFF in this. I agree.
- 50:38Youth of a yeah, except that. So here.
- 50:43Okay, so something the other thing that I like about the
- 50:46writing, Was how subtle they were about establishing
- 50:49characters? So pretty quickly.
- 50:51You get a handle on the kind of person so Yoon is she is very
- 50:55single-minded, very stubborn, she's also selfish.
- 51:00Yes, there are like different moments when and you have heat a
- 51:05calling her out on it, like practically.
- 51:07Yes time. They actually meet as even them.
- 51:09So they're sitting out in the garden.
- 51:10We are speaking about like gurus that just got busted and He begs
- 51:17her perfectly is a, you don't seem the kind of person who
- 51:19actually cares about other people's feelings.
- 51:21And we're just point, you know, completely proved correct.
- 51:25Like, the next moment when she's like, no, no, he has no feelings
- 51:28for you, but it actually never even occurred to her to actually
- 51:31inquire if a bright red does. So, it's I really liked how they
- 51:38established the characters with examples of action.
- 51:41Instead of trying to have like, you know, show don't tell that
- 51:44that exact Exactly. Yeah I ended up hating that BFF
- 51:49character to be quite honest with you because yeah, yeah,
- 51:52yeah. I know she makes the wrong
- 51:54decision every time. Like every time she's faced with
- 51:58a dilemma she doesn't do the right thing.
- 52:00She always is self servicing and selfish and she considers her
- 52:05own family before other people and it's not like this is the
- 52:09first time they establish in the story that she has been caught
- 52:14before. Adding up.
- 52:17What was it? Like flyers at their school when
- 52:19they were in high school? And she ever gets she never gets
- 52:24punished for that and young he does even though it like wasn't
- 52:29her idea, she didn't lead the charge on his, she was just one
- 52:31of a few and she gets expelled from the school.
- 52:35Like she gets set back. You know, if this was a game she
- 52:39would move back ten Paces. Yeah, I know and I've been thing
- 52:43is you don't actually see a sodium being particularly
- 52:47apologetic to him. He happened.
- 52:50Oh my Yeah, and the fact that that whole Dating Rules that she
- 52:55suggested. Yeah happen, because we knew he
- 52:58needed money for her airfare to Germany.
- 53:00Okay. Then would have been like, I
- 53:02will get that for you, I'll get it for you.
- 53:05So, do you say, why don't you do this for me?
- 53:07Why don't I say your life? It's yeah.
- 53:13Fuck you, bitch. I hated her like by the end.
- 53:17I was like, thank God that she was the one that It imploded
- 53:21their relationship and said, like, why don't we just like,
- 53:23say fuck it and you go back to gwangju and get with me only and
- 53:28I'll like do as I please here and if I want to go back to
- 53:31gwangju and like, kick a fuss against the government, and
- 53:34that's my biz. So that was the only part that I
- 53:37was like, okay. Finally, she made the right
- 53:38decision, she could sure use the word them so much.
- 53:41She's tortured. She's the one who tortured them
- 53:44in like, didn't let the LIE didn't tell the truth when she
- 53:49should have and he warned I was like we can't let this go any
- 53:52further than it already has because then we can't get out
- 53:56and she was like too scared, too fearful to do anything about it
- 54:01and was more content with just leaving things as they are
- 54:04naively thinking that they weren't going to get out of
- 54:07hand. Things weren't getting it out of
- 54:08hand that so I'm really privileged, right?
- 54:12She's never done something that's bad enough.
- 54:17Her does gotten her out of it and clearly not explain to her
- 54:20What he has had to give up like literally every time this man
- 54:24asked for a fever from somebody that is a favor that's held
- 54:27against him in this political atmosphere as his daughters just
- 54:32like where I guess my task going to do that again.
- 54:34Next time I get caught doing something rebellious and that
- 54:37just doesn't allow you to respect her actions as a student
- 54:42protesting against, you know, dictatorial government.
- 54:45Because what she is doing, is still selfish Within you know,
- 54:51the frame of her family, her friends, I mean, yeah, I was
- 54:56very upset with her throughout the show because she just seemed
- 55:01so Irrefutably selfish. And there was nothing that she
- 55:09could do to redeem like after a certain point.
- 55:11I was like she's fucked them all like that's because he thought
- 55:16it was the one that was like I don't want to do this, I don't
- 55:19want to be here. You tell your people to back out
- 55:22because my dad's the devil and he's not going to let me back
- 55:25out. So like you do it wear the pants
- 55:28and, like, man up shut this thing down and she never did.
- 55:33Yeah, she never did. So that was very frustrating
- 55:37throughout. Also, do you want to talk about
- 55:42the breath? So East on Keys character again,
- 55:45I felt that he was extremely naive because yes, he was
- 55:53jealous of heat has relationship with Miyagi.
- 55:55Yes, he was trying, I'm using air quotes trying to do what was
- 55:59best for me, only and warn her about He did, because he's got,
- 56:04like, all of these crazy rumors surrounding him, but at the end
- 56:07of the day, he was very selfish as well.
- 56:12And they're so stupid. Like, the whole family is like,
- 56:18let's just get in League with the devil.
- 56:20And we know he's a bad person. We know that Heath is Dad is
- 56:24powerful and manipulative, but he probably won't be manipulated
- 56:29to us because we'll be in-laws And it's like no baby.
- 56:34No, they were so insulated in their world and there was no,
- 56:39they thought there would be no consequences for getting in bed
- 56:42with a double. So, I mean him, the dad, I was
- 56:47like the dad, I wrote off the dad, when he said, I don't care
- 56:51if people say that I sold off my child.
- 56:53You're going to marry this guy. You have to marry him for the
- 56:58sake of our family business. So I was like, this whole
- 57:03family, just throw them in the trash, just throw them away, the
- 57:06terrible. Oh my God, I will say that there
- 57:13was this one Dynamic. I absolutely loved, which was
- 57:19young, his brother and his brother.
- 57:22Oh, he did. He thinks my gosh.
- 57:24Yeah. Um, the young ones were like my
- 57:28God. They were, they were like a
- 57:30relief from Oliver family drama. That was happening.
- 57:35Yeah. Yeah, I agree.
- 57:38They were very cute. They had their own arcs as well.
- 57:42You know, they came heathaze, younger brother was very upset
- 57:48and stuff about people calling his mother, the mistress, and
- 57:52the kids kind of living their lives and having fun and stuff
- 57:57without him. He had to go home every day.
- 57:59You can stay in the dorms with all of the other Runners and he
- 58:06was like, I don't want to be home.
- 58:07I want to be here with these kids.
- 58:08Like I don't want them to think that I'm privileged basically,
- 58:12even though he never said that, he was like I want to be at the
- 58:15dorms, so he goes to live there. And even though him and the
- 58:19little brother young, he's little brother got off on the
- 58:21wrong foot like he fixed it instantly when he stood up for
- 58:27me and you Little brother. They were making fun of their
- 58:31crippled Dad. They were walking around and
- 58:34making fun of him because they're a little assholes, and
- 58:39there is a huge stigma back then about people with disabilities.
- 58:43And they were making fun of it was like, wild.
- 58:46I was shocked and he has a little brother like punches out
- 58:50the kids and like, from then on there, okay.
- 58:54I know line between them that I really loved where He's little
- 58:59brother went and said, because this was, this was his Nemesis
- 59:03who had just done something great for him.
- 59:05I defended his dad. So, and he was being punished,
- 59:08of course, by the coach. And so he goes from.
- 59:11Eun-suh is the, you know, what's her name yoonhee's?
- 59:18Yes, brother. So young Soo goes to jump
- 59:21because he pays brother, and it's like, I didn't you listen
- 59:24to the coach? He said, we should never cross
- 59:26the line and by that, he means Seems like the racetrack lines,
- 59:29you know, where each Runner should stick to their own track.
- 59:33And I love the line that Jong Tey says, which is that, I don't
- 59:38think you heard what the court said in entirety.
- 59:41He said for, you know, I think long Runners, don't know what
- 59:48they called, short distance Runners yet distance Runners.
- 59:52Don't cross the lines, but we're long distance Runners.
- 59:55Yeah, exactly. So we took a should know we You
- 59:58should know when it's okay to cross the line.
- 1:00:00Yeah, I I love that like such great lines, even for the kids.
- 1:00:05Yeah, yeah, hold on, by the way, great dialogue in this drama
- 1:00:09just also, I go hide. Yes.
- 1:00:13I have a line here from Heath, a in episode 2, he tells me every
- 1:00:17time I see you, I feel like catching up on all the smiles I
- 1:00:20missed in the last few years. How can you not fall for this
- 1:00:25man? Oh my God, she had no chance.
- 1:00:28She stood, no chance. Like, of course she was gonna
- 1:00:31fall for the sky. They have this stunning.
- 1:00:35Speaking of them to they have this stunning scene in episode
- 1:00:382, where he's bandaging her sprained, ankle in this like
- 1:00:41cherry tree Grove in front of like this Pond or something at,
- 1:00:45and it's golden hour and I was like, this is like kdrama crack.
- 1:00:51This is a kdrama crack moment, right?
- 1:00:53You're just Like, I need it in my veins right now.
- 1:00:56It's perfect. And I just love their Dynamic
- 1:01:01here. And now, he's like helping her,
- 1:01:03but she's like, doesn't want to really deal with it, but she's
- 1:01:07it's such a romantic scene and I can't, I really can't.
- 1:01:11It sucks. It's so great.
- 1:01:13Speaking of romantic. Oh, my God.
- 1:01:15Before I forget episode for the turnaround scene, He's like turn
- 1:01:20around, turn around, didn't then that remind you of the movie,
- 1:01:25The dilwale dulhaniya. Yeah, of course.
- 1:01:28That's the one that I was thinking of, but I wasn't sure
- 1:01:30if you were gonna die for an Indian.
- 1:01:32Oh my God. Yes.
- 1:01:33So when I saw it I was like it's that scene but it's not a good
- 1:01:37con like oh my God, I was like. Freaking out because they did
- 1:01:44it. They copy and paste it into the
- 1:01:47show and it works so well. But honestly you should you
- 1:01:51should all see the movie that we just referenced and see that
- 1:01:55scene in its entirety because it's such a plus plus romance
- 1:01:59right there. Absolutely, let me see episode
- 1:02:066, but this is another Female lead thing where he says stages,
- 1:02:16an intervention with Miyagi and he tells her that, you know,
- 1:02:19everyone makes mistakes. It's okay.
- 1:02:21Heath is not a good person. It's not too late to, like, get
- 1:02:23away from him and fix it. And that Heath is deceiving her
- 1:02:27and all this stuff and she goes, it's a choice.
- 1:02:29I made, I've lived my entire life giving up in yielding
- 1:02:33because I had no courage, but Juanita is the first choice I
- 1:02:36made by gathering up the courage even if you curse and throw
- 1:02:39rocks and me as a choice I made. So I'll pay the Winces, yeah.
- 1:02:43Great moment for her great moment of growth for her.
- 1:02:47Because absolutely, she's been yielding her entire life and you
- 1:02:51see that she's been such a victim throughout her whole
- 1:02:55life. And like, leaning into hitha, is
- 1:03:00a giant moment for her and she won't give it up easily.
- 1:03:05So I thought that was a beautiful moment.
- 1:03:07Even though again second male lead usagi, being a little far,
- 1:03:11Art. He was such a great second meet
- 1:03:15lead in, hold on Cha-cha-cha like this also should be that I
- 1:03:22thought that yummy and heat. It ended up having a very
- 1:03:25healthy relationship, like despite everything because even
- 1:03:28though they did make some mistakes and they were
- 1:03:30withholding information from each other, they ended up
- 1:03:33developing a better working relationship, which was like
- 1:03:38young. He said I, you know, even though
- 1:03:40everything is hard Hard and I'm having a bad day and things, you
- 1:03:44know, I don't regret being with you and even if we're not she
- 1:03:48says even if we're not always strong and at our best I would
- 1:03:50like us to be able to show each other everything and so they
- 1:03:54established this like bond in this trust between one another
- 1:03:58that they end up keeping for the most part through the end of the
- 1:04:01show. Yeah.
- 1:04:06It's particularly poignant because because the show shows
- 1:04:10us in that brief macro season what their relationship could
- 1:04:18be. If it was allowed to go full
- 1:04:20bloom. It's yeah you can understand why
- 1:04:25this is an unforgettable love for both of them.
- 1:04:28Why it could? It would have to be each other
- 1:04:30and nobody else. In other cases, you might be
- 1:04:34like, move on. I mean, maybe a decade later,
- 1:04:40come on, but move on, but When we hard to move on from this,
- 1:04:45hmm, I did want to touch on Miyagi and her dad and their
- 1:04:51relationship and how she ends up confronting her dad in episode
- 1:04:557. After you got kit, was his whole
- 1:04:57thing. Like, episode 7 had tons of
- 1:04:59things happening. She got kidnapped by Heath is
- 1:05:02Dad and she looked cartoon whole, yes.
- 1:05:08So he threatens her and he says, like you're not going to
- 1:05:12Germany, there's Way your visas getting approved because, you
- 1:05:15know, not only did you upset me by being in a relationship with
- 1:05:18my son, but your dad's a commie a sworn commie and she goes home
- 1:05:26to that, they're like, little Hometown and she confronts the
- 1:05:29dead and she asked like, is she a commies daughter?
- 1:05:33Is that why nothing ever works out for her?
- 1:05:36Is that why she's struggled all her life?
- 1:05:38Why didn't he tell her? She wouldn't have gotten her
- 1:05:41hopes up. Had she known?
- 1:05:43On that, she had this like black spot on her her whole life so I
- 1:05:49thought it was very interesting. I thought their relationship was
- 1:05:55like ostensibly like the second-best thing of the show
- 1:05:59was her complex relationship with her dad and how he was.
- 1:06:04Like I just didn't want you to grow up with that stigma of
- 1:06:08being a communist daughter even though he wasn't a He was there
- 1:06:13was like this whole thing where he says Jad framed him for being
- 1:06:18a communist 27 years ago and he crippled him, that's how he
- 1:06:22became a cripple. I mean, honestly, it was very
- 1:06:27kdrama me but at the same time, it was very poignant to see her
- 1:06:33grapple with this Revelation and to see her dad try and fix it
- 1:06:37try and fix their relationship and mend their relationship and
- 1:06:41like, oh my God. God.
- 1:06:43It Chim trying to give her a dignified life and it didn't
- 1:06:47matter. Like it didn't matter because
- 1:06:49she was so like it just never nothing ever worked out for her
- 1:06:53regardless. So I was, I was a mess.
- 1:06:58Like I don't know about you, but I was a mess during all those.
- 1:07:01I also thought it was an interesting and also probably
- 1:07:04really smart choice to Nick. The protagonist unrelated kind
- 1:07:10of to the protests like this. About people who would fight for
- 1:07:15justice, who would stand up for people who are standing up for
- 1:07:19people? But they are not taking on the
- 1:07:22larger burden of the uprising and they don't have political
- 1:07:27like they are not out there fighting for their political
- 1:07:32beliefs, they are just living their everyday lives and
- 1:07:35supporting those who are fighting in, whatever capacity
- 1:07:39they can, because you see yoon-hee, He helping her friend.
- 1:07:44You see, he, they constantly helping his friends.
- 1:07:48I mean, that's kind of how he got his trauma.
- 1:07:51And yeah, But neither of them are, you know, Center on the
- 1:07:55front lines. Yeah, they're not on the front
- 1:07:57lines and this is a story but people who are not on the front
- 1:08:00lines and then which which allows you to sympathize with
- 1:08:04Myung hee when she confronts her father, because to her, she was
- 1:08:08just living her life and did not know like how these larger
- 1:08:16politics were directly affecting her and why she was it was so
- 1:08:21easy for people to I believe that, you know, she would do
- 1:08:24something like the thing that had happened in her High School.
- 1:08:26It was just, yeah, I mean, you can you can understand why she
- 1:08:31would bridge. I like that.
- 1:08:33So, yeah. And she feels that it's unfair,
- 1:08:35which it is. It, is I agree this one note.
- 1:08:39Oh, so I will mean evil, dad the high who is like whom nobody
- 1:08:46wants in their family, which I, which is why I absolutely loved.
- 1:08:49Yes, probably. Like prime rib.
- 1:08:52Burn man like the he to hear that from your son.
- 1:08:57The so yeah this guy was also good enough crash landing on
- 1:09:01you. Yes he was which I found very
- 1:09:03fitting. Ah, very similar gotta go in
- 1:09:09both the you dramas and he did crash landing on you just before
- 1:09:14he did, you do. Yep.
- 1:09:19Yep. The villain Vibe carried over.
- 1:09:23I really thought he was a grand villain because he didn't, it
- 1:09:29wasn't just he was evil for evil sake.
- 1:09:31There was a huge amount of hubris.
- 1:09:34Hmm to And him wanting control over his family and wanting more
- 1:09:42power. And prestige in this volatile
- 1:09:46political environment was like, you understood.
- 1:09:50I understood that, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:09:52There wasn't just like he was evil for evils sake, like, not
- 1:09:54exactly and him. And he, this relationship was
- 1:10:04Maddening, maddening to watch because in no, way shape or
- 1:10:09form. Is he a father, right?
- 1:10:11He's a bully. He's constantly intimidating
- 1:10:17heathy and, you know, I thought, no way.
- 1:10:21Did I believe if they had that? He loved his kids, you know,
- 1:10:27there was no love in him at all. And, yeah, in the later
- 1:10:31episodes. What is it like in episode 11 or
- 1:10:3512? He's got his son, he did tied up
- 1:10:40in a room in the House locked away and he took the in order to
- 1:10:46get Heath it back. He had to like Ram a vehicle
- 1:10:50into the ambulance that he was writing that he thought was in
- 1:10:54and so he's all messed up from the accident.
- 1:10:57He's got all these injuries. He's got a head trauma for sure.
- 1:11:00And he still hasn't tied up. No medical.
- 1:11:03Assistance has been given to his son and he has this conversation
- 1:11:08where Heath is lying, prostrate on the floor, tied up and he
- 1:11:11standing above him. And I'm like, is that not the
- 1:11:14perfect representation of their relationship where he is
- 1:11:18constantly stepping on his son and keeping him, tied down,
- 1:11:23keeping him, you know, where he wants him in controlled.
- 1:11:28And I love how he that just takes the opportunity.
- 1:11:31He ungag him and he's just Art's talking and Heath is trying his
- 1:11:35best to use words against his dad.
- 1:11:38And one of the final things that he says is well the dad Compares
- 1:11:41him to an orphan, you're an orphan.
- 1:11:43And you know you're basically at my Mercy And he says, I'm not
- 1:11:48the orphan, you are because no one would ever choose you to be
- 1:11:52their family. Yeah, and that cuts him.
- 1:11:58It's a, it's amazing. Yeah, and it comes back around.
- 1:12:02Go go, go finish the knives. Okay, perfect.
- 1:12:05So anyway, it comes back around because the young son, it goes
- 1:12:09to save me, only from an assassination because the dad
- 1:12:14orders, an assassination of Yogi and episode 12, and he thinks
- 1:12:18back, the dad ends up thinking back to this moment where he
- 1:12:22says, you know, The orphan no one wants would want you as a
- 1:12:27family because the families like get off of me.
- 1:12:29Like they're all like shaking him off whenever he tries to
- 1:12:33touch them and they abandoned him they leave without him and
- 1:12:37it's such a moment. So I really like that it comes
- 1:12:39back around and he realizes that he's right that he thought was
- 1:12:42right about it, okay? What did you have?
- 1:12:47You got really excited. Well, what did you and I just
- 1:12:50remembered that I had was beautiful world.
- 1:12:54I think in January this year again after like I should just
- 1:12:58take all of science recommendation seriously.
- 1:13:00I don't know why I keep dealing watching anything she recommends
- 1:13:03because I always end up loving, I'm doing trying to get you to
- 1:13:06watch beautiful world for like three years now and I watched it
- 1:13:10and Oh manseok was exactly the same kind of father in that
- 1:13:16drama his son was like a teenager like a 14 year old
- 1:13:23teenager, but yeah, the guy was exactly.
- 1:13:28Let's if he may have been stereotyped a little bit in the,
- 1:13:32in, the casting choices, but he's definitely taking us.
- 1:13:36Yeah, he please this type so. Well, my God, it's like it's new
- 1:13:42on Just devilry. It's just he's so horrible.
- 1:13:46But you can kind of see how his gears function like how they
- 1:13:49move. So yeah, I agree.
- 1:13:54It is nuanced devilry. For sure, for sure, for sure.
- 1:14:01So, I have a few more things to talk about really fast, so I'll
- 1:14:03go through them fast but in episode 7 like so much stuff
- 1:14:08happens in episode 7 but in episode 7, Heat.
- 1:14:12'He is waiting for me only at the station because they had
- 1:14:14this like full-on like break up on the bridge after she's been
- 1:14:18kidnapped and she's been awake for like what 24 hours or
- 1:14:21something like that. She's got a concussion for sure,
- 1:14:24Xavier on the head, she's a mess.
- 1:14:26She looks sick ill, and he's waiting for her at the station
- 1:14:30after this blah fight that she had with her dad.
- 1:14:33She walks past him at the station and he follows her
- 1:14:36calling out to her. She walks into the middle of a
- 1:14:39protest and he's stuck on the sidewalk can't get to And I was
- 1:14:43like, this is very symbolic of how the politics just got in the
- 1:14:49way, like the times. Just got in the way of their
- 1:14:52relationship. It was the right relationship at
- 1:14:54the wrong time and they couldn't overcome this wave of tyranny
- 1:15:00and she is writing dangerously close to the protesters and he's
- 1:15:05scared to jump into The Fray. And when he finally catches up
- 1:15:09to her, they have their conversation.
- 1:15:11Finally, in an alley, Lee, and it's a dead end and I was like,
- 1:15:14oh my God, this is like mimicking their relationship
- 1:15:17that there's just no road ahead there at a dead end and it's
- 1:15:23just, I thought it was very well done as far as staging goes.
- 1:15:28And it was a beautiful, beautiful whole extinct ones of
- 1:15:33them talking and of course it's very emotional.
- 1:15:35And you know she's like I'm this one.
- 1:15:37She says I'm scared of you and he takes that to heart because
- 1:15:40he's like I don't want her to be afraid of.
- 1:15:42Be like, you know? So, it's crazy.
- 1:15:48I'm trying to think of my notes. Yo, so episode 8, do you think
- 1:15:55that? Because they get back together
- 1:15:59and he goes home with her and they make out in her little room
- 1:16:02that she has in the boarding house?
- 1:16:05And they wake up the next day in the same bed with are fully
- 1:16:07closed. Did you think that they had sex?
- 1:16:09Because I assumed that they had sex, listen, I if they wake up
- 1:16:14in the same bed and nobody mentions anything, I assume
- 1:16:19they've had sex because they didn't say anything there.
- 1:16:25They were you know, there was no something if one of them wasn't
- 1:16:30I did we last four for sure? They haven't had sex for sure.
- 1:16:35What do you want me to mention it?
- 1:16:38When the punchline is that the other person is like you.
- 1:16:42I wish but no, I assumed that they had sex but you're like if
- 1:16:47they, you know, they don't think so too.
- 1:16:49I agree. No, no, I okay, they didn't
- 1:16:51mention it. So it's they didn't know.
- 1:16:54So, I'm going with the people they had.
- 1:16:58So I think one of the only issues that I had with the show
- 1:17:01was the person that got heated Kwang Soo, was this friend
- 1:17:08friend of a friend basically that he had saved?
- 1:17:10And she was in the ICU. And basically, the Outlook was
- 1:17:13really bad for her. She was in a vegetative state
- 1:17:16and he wanted to move her transfer her to Guangzhou, and
- 1:17:18that's how he ends up doing gwangju.
- 1:17:20And the whole thing that person, the sort of comrade that he
- 1:17:26feels incredibly responsible for this person, like you don't
- 1:17:31really know anything about the late, this labor union leader,
- 1:17:35Is accepted. She was Brave, you know, and I
- 1:17:39found her to be more of a device, right?
- 1:17:42Then, you know, anything more, she seems so much like a device,
- 1:17:47especially later on, when the BFF goes to the hospital with
- 1:17:52heat a and soul to visit her on the eve of them transferring her
- 1:17:56to gwangju. And She ends up saying like oh
- 1:18:01she protested and stood up for what she believed in even though
- 1:18:03it was hard even though she was definitely scared and it kind of
- 1:18:06jolts her into action again and she's like, why am I like just
- 1:18:11living my life so passively and letting everything happen to me?
- 1:18:15I should do what she did. Even though I'm scared, I need
- 1:18:18to like, stand up for what I believe in and the very next day
- 1:18:21she like Cuts Heath a loose and she's like go back to gwangju
- 1:18:24and like we'll just deal with it, you know.
- 1:18:27So again I just felt like she was just a Catalyst for these
- 1:18:30characters, instead of something more you know.
- 1:18:34Yeah, we have to find out what happens to her.
- 1:18:36She never, we never found out she wakes up or if she dies or
- 1:18:39something it's just you know, she wasn't particularly
- 1:18:43important as a person. She was of important as
- 1:18:46connections between people between he pay and his Soldier
- 1:18:51friend, like his communist friend.
- 1:18:55Who got drafted into the army. He hated And my God.
- 1:19:00What a tragic? Turn on.
- 1:19:01That was. Oh my God.
- 1:19:04So let well, let me see if there's anything else.
- 1:19:08Oh my God. Yeah, one last thing episode 11
- 1:19:11and then we'll talk about the end game episode.
- 1:19:13So episode 11, there's this friend who had been tortured for
- 1:19:18days before even May 11th, May 18th came around.
- 1:19:23They had like kidnapped him and were torturing him for
- 1:19:25information and now he's finally facing off.
- 1:19:29Against the devil dead. I just call him the double dad
- 1:19:32and my notes. But the friend thinks back to a
- 1:19:36conversation he had with Heath, a where he asked him, if I get
- 1:19:40caught would mentioning your name, get me out and he pay
- 1:19:44assures him, that mentioning his name to his dad or anyone else
- 1:19:49would get him killed. So we cut back to the present
- 1:19:53and he's like face-to-face with the devil dead.
- 1:19:55And he just starts laughing because inadvertently he day has
- 1:20:01given him a cyanide. I'd pill and he uses it in that
- 1:20:06moment. He causes a fuss over begging,
- 1:20:09the devil dead to spare him and dropping Heath, his name, and he
- 1:20:15gets bludgeoned to death by the devil dead. and I found this so
- 1:20:21powerful and I don't know what just Amazing in a sense because
- 1:20:33you don't expect such a ludicrous unhinged ending for
- 1:20:39this guy and for it to be so meaningful, in a sense.
- 1:20:43Yeah. So I don't know if you felt any
- 1:20:46type of way, about that scene, but I like it because I can
- 1:20:49expecting. I honestly didn't expect him to
- 1:20:54like, get out or anything like that.
- 1:20:56Yeah, it was clearly like, even though Dog PD and the writer
- 1:21:01were not focusing on the larger Uprising.
- 1:21:03They have, chosen people around our protagonists who was
- 1:21:07suffering in different ways and like this character was clearly,
- 1:21:11you know, sort of a symbol of like the suffering.
- 1:21:14A lot of protesters were going through the ones who were
- 1:21:17already in jail, and of course, this entire thing may have
- 1:21:19peaked in me, but it has been happening for years simmering.
- 1:21:24So, students were being picked up randomly.
- 1:21:27The smallest accusation could Could get you behind bars, so
- 1:21:31it's and it kept on happening, even after that for years.
- 1:21:34Oh yeah. Speak that ended.
- 1:21:35Yeah. So I kind of assumed this
- 1:21:39character would probably end up dying.
- 1:21:41Yeah, but I thought that they were building up to.
- 1:21:44I don't know, something momentous.
- 1:21:46Like he gives away something big or something like that.
- 1:21:49I was not expecting him to basically.
- 1:21:54Like you said do what he did which is like put an end to his
- 1:21:57own misery and also ensure that he can't like betray his
- 1:22:03friends. It just it was really poignant
- 1:22:06and to use your abusers your your assailants weakness.
- 1:22:11Yes against him like that. Yeah, yeah, that was so Splendid
- 1:22:17tragic. I'll spend it tragic.
- 1:22:19Yeah. Episode 11.
- 1:22:22This is and we're going to talk about And game episodes.
- 1:22:25So the debt miyagi's dad and the younger brother Myung-soo try to
- 1:22:29make it back on foot. So your naju and they get lost
- 1:22:33in the dark and the soldiers, find them and the dad leaves to
- 1:22:38try and talk to the soldiers. And I was like he's dead, he's
- 1:22:43gonna die and next episode last episode, we find out that he
- 1:22:47does, they murder him in Cold Blood.
- 1:22:51And oh my God, this was Terrible because she never sort of
- 1:22:56reconciles with him in a way. He to The Bitter End was trying
- 1:23:05to support her in the only way. He knew how and he had saved
- 1:23:08every bit of money that he had made and saved, all the money
- 1:23:11that she sent back home. And he put it in a savings
- 1:23:13account, who was like, this is for you and to get your life
- 1:23:17started. And for it was initially for
- 1:23:19her, Germany School tuition. And I was like, oh my God, like
- 1:23:23that imploded. And, you know, he left a letter
- 1:23:26for her. It was very much like a, it's
- 1:23:29incomplete, you know, an incomplete relationship and I
- 1:23:35was devastated. I was so devastated.
- 1:23:40Isan gies character ends up finally becoming a rebel and he
- 1:23:43starts helping his sister after he was taken, and he was
- 1:23:47tortured and was in this room. Like God knows what happened to
- 1:23:50these people that were Arrested and so he has this, like come to
- 1:23:56Jesus moment in the final episode because he his naivety
- 1:24:01is like Torn to Pieces in this moment, right?
- 1:24:06Where he finally realizes like what she's been fighting for.
- 1:24:11Or against. And I guess the final thing is
- 1:24:16that, you know, the little brother Myung-soo, what does he
- 1:24:19do? He like goes off to back to naju
- 1:24:23to try and find the grandmother. And the mom, his mom and tell
- 1:24:29them what happened to the dad so that they could have like the
- 1:24:32final send off of the father. Yeah.
- 1:24:36And he initiates this terrible. No good Awful ending for our
- 1:24:42couple which Is Young, he dies like she straight up gets
- 1:24:47murdered in the woods. She blocked a bullet.
- 1:24:51That was meant for her brother and he gets away and that that's
- 1:24:57it like she dies and it's so undignified and Rude.
- 1:25:04And just the way that they like left her in a ditch, they didn't
- 1:25:07even bury her. They just like left her.
- 1:25:10They were initially, like, remove all forms of
- 1:25:13identification off of her so that no one can identify the
- 1:25:16body later. And thankfully, that one friend
- 1:25:20who had been following in and out of the, his military service
- 1:25:25took pity and left the like, left the identification
- 1:25:29basically, he left the watch that Kid dropped the brother
- 1:25:35dropped and he left the wedding prayer on her.
- 1:25:41And that's how they could identify her later.
- 1:25:44I got to tell you like when they cut to the present because they
- 1:25:48flash forwarded at the beginning of episode 12.
- 1:25:51And that's how you figure, you know, who lives and young.
- 1:25:56He's not among like the present day people.
- 1:26:00And I was like, oh my God, I like, you see he did working as
- 1:26:05a professor in the hospital. And when he finally, they
- 1:26:09finally tell him that they found her body young, he's body.
- 1:26:13I mean, I lost it. I was sobbing over Heath a
- 1:26:17reading her wedding prayer in 2021 41 years later.
- 1:26:22Yeah, like I, like talk to me. Like, what did you think?
- 1:26:27It's like ending and all of this reveal and stuff.
- 1:26:33So he probably be deeply disappointed because I love you
- 1:26:39that the ending was going to end up.
- 1:26:43You know, with her dead. I wanted to get that over with
- 1:26:48as quickly as possible. So I think I was around the
- 1:26:50episode 3 ish, Mark when I just, yeah, I've always done this in
- 1:26:56fiction. Whatever I do that was going to
- 1:26:58be a tragic. You had the last page of the
- 1:27:01book, I don't know. I was reading the book.
- 1:27:04I honestly think I could get through the entire thing because
- 1:27:08I read it because my anxiety is no joke.
- 1:27:11I was telling you about my dogs. My anxiety, Trump says and I
- 1:27:19can't like I keep I kept stalling.
- 1:27:22Like you you told me about this was more than one pack, right?
- 1:27:26And I was stalling till like two weeks back I had watched the
- 1:27:31first two episodes and I was like, I got I can't, this is,
- 1:27:35they're so cute. I can't watch this.
- 1:27:37So I just like waiting hadn't watched, but it didn't diminish,
- 1:27:41the impact for me. I I when I finally got to that
- 1:27:45episode again, I of course, watched the whole way through
- 1:27:49and the so you have these coats from the director here.
- 1:27:55Yeah. And at one point, he talks about
- 1:27:57how she had to die because that was basically the frame.
- 1:28:01It was that the story is memorable because she died and
- 1:28:06he's not wrong. I don't think he's really after
- 1:28:09all of that. If both of them had completely
- 1:28:11holy emerge from That. And if somebody else had died in
- 1:28:15the background, would not have had the same impact.
- 1:28:20The reason this is like so golden in the audience's memory
- 1:28:24as well as in he thinks memory is because it's kind of like
- 1:28:29contained in that one single month.
- 1:28:33Pretty much mostly in me and you know, part of me when I was
- 1:28:38watching the final episode I thought hey this is you know,
- 1:28:42they come. Just a great actor, I crossed
- 1:28:47jae-won Jung, which by the way, it's the actors who get to play
- 1:28:51the older versions of either Kuhn is just, it's such good
- 1:28:55choices. I mean, they always cast.
- 1:28:57I really still now, they've cast like actors who can really
- 1:29:00smile, like, smile, with their whole being and she went on, can
- 1:29:06so good. I thought he was this was a
- 1:29:09story about a man who's had this tragic thing happened to him?
- 1:29:13What he has emerged from it. Like, he has healed, but the
- 1:29:17drama is not the dramas like no sirree for 41 years.
- 1:29:23This man has been suffering and we were staying in detail how?
- 1:29:28Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:29:29They made a point of kind of saying how he's been stuck in
- 1:29:331980 for 41 years. Oh, And her wedding prayer was
- 1:29:40something like. I hope that we can even if we
- 1:29:43are out and swimming and swimming in the waves of life
- 1:29:47and stuff, I hope we don't drown.
- 1:29:50If we don't end up, you know, holding each other's hands
- 1:29:53forever, which was his prayer was that we never let go of each
- 1:29:56other. And I mean, honestly, he says
- 1:30:01that he's trying, he's tried to kill himself, he's been suicidal
- 1:30:06in the past. 41 years and how he just wants to end his suffering
- 1:30:10and that he has been drowning. Yeah, you know like she didn't
- 1:30:17want him to for all this time and he decided to just keep
- 1:30:25living you know in In a Mosh to her, you know?
- 1:30:30Because she wanted him to. Yeah.
- 1:30:33And so and it's very powerful Left Behind.
- 1:30:36Yes. And previously, he made the
- 1:30:40point of saying, if you die, I will have nothing.
- 1:30:45You are all. I have I have no other family.
- 1:30:47I have no other like friends, you are it.
- 1:30:50So I would rather die. Like if something were to happen
- 1:30:56I would rather be the one to suffer.
- 1:30:59And she said, you know, don't say that I'll be your family and
- 1:31:02they get married, and they have this whole like thing.
- 1:31:05And even in the end episode where he's like this, the road
- 1:31:09diverges, there's two roads. It splits, I'll go down the more
- 1:31:14dangerous road, and you go down this road where there's no
- 1:31:17soldiers parked at the end of it or whatever, and she does.
- 1:31:22And she's still, even though it was the easier Road, she still
- 1:31:26died like, he even in his, he Tried so hard, you know, and it
- 1:31:31still didn't didn't work, you know, she still suffered and
- 1:31:34died and he it was his worst nightmare because I was all he
- 1:31:38had it. So it was very affecting you
- 1:31:41know for me to see him in the present day and to see him still
- 1:31:46using humor as a crutch as a you know, defense mechanism and he
- 1:31:51still has this like very light personality but he's still
- 1:31:54suffering. Yeah, on the inside. and oh my
- 1:32:01God, I mean It was well, it was very well done.
- 1:32:06And the director says like after me only died, the drama shows
- 1:32:10the stories of the remaining people.
- 1:32:11The drama is trying to say that numerous people are living while
- 1:32:14carrying their own burdens. And it's 100% case like he
- 1:32:21nailed it, right? If that's what he was going for.
- 1:32:23He nailed it and her death does make the drama more meaningful.
- 1:32:30Absolutely. And it's just like, I know we
- 1:32:32brought up tight and I brought up to tanning earlier but it's
- 1:32:35the same thing with with, you know Jack dying at the end of
- 1:32:39Titanic. Like that makes the story even
- 1:32:41more meaningful. Like, had he lived, you probably
- 1:32:44wouldn't feel as strongly about the, you know, this story.
- 1:32:49So it is tragic and I do feel like it was always supposed to
- 1:32:53happen. I think some people get upset
- 1:32:56when they don't get Happy Endings, especially in kdramas,
- 1:32:59and I can understand it when it's not warranted.
- 1:33:02And the story doesn't really call for it, and it kind of
- 1:33:05comes out of left field, and it just feels like they're trying
- 1:33:07to, like, pull a fast one on you, right.
- 1:33:11It feels like they're, they're not taking the audience into
- 1:33:14consideration, but I feel like the director was like, not only
- 1:33:17am I taking the audience into Federation, I'm taking the
- 1:33:21weight of History into consideration, and I'm these
- 1:33:23characters that we've crafted here deserve a little bit more
- 1:33:29meaning after the fact, and, of course, they deserve better.
- 1:33:33Of course, you deserve to have a happy ending but that's what
- 1:33:36makes this so heartbreaking, right?
- 1:33:39Is that they couldn't escape history, they couldn't escape
- 1:33:42this fate, And I don't know, it just does something to me, and I
- 1:33:47do feel like a lot of stories that have unhappy endings and
- 1:33:50kdrama. They're warranted, right?
- 1:33:53Like I personally feel like the 25:21 ending was warranted,
- 1:33:57right? Didn't end up together.
- 1:33:58I love the ending. Yeah.
- 1:34:00And honestly, that was not the mean Romance of 25.
- 1:34:04Yeah, yeah. Well, she was always going at
- 1:34:06him. Yes.
- 1:34:08Yeah. Precisely though.
- 1:34:11Uh-huh. Neither so I feel the same I'm
- 1:34:14way about this ending where it was like, absolutely a given,
- 1:34:19you know. Yeah, so I think that's the
- 1:34:23biggest thing. Like, that's the biggest thing
- 1:34:25about the shows that she dies, they don't end up together.
- 1:34:27It's so sad, it's really, but yeah, but one of the things that
- 1:34:32makes it the most poignant and not something that makes you
- 1:34:37feel like, you know, the dogs being pulled from under you and
- 1:34:40like your be cheated of a good ending it's because The built of
- 1:34:46the story as something that was, you know, or kind of like like
- 1:34:51that, like I said, we put a time limit on it, pretty early.
- 1:34:55It also felt the the speed of it, the quickness of the
- 1:35:01progression of the relationship. Also, lent this urgency to the
- 1:35:05narrative so that it felt like it was happening too quickly.
- 1:35:10It was burning too bright. Mmm, and there was almost like
- 1:35:14You expected that fall to happen especially given the
- 1:35:17vulnerability of that time but it was also a joy to watch the
- 1:35:22relationship. Develop the thing that kdramas
- 1:35:25do where they explored the saddest of topics but they
- 1:35:29always Infuse Certain lived moments with so much joy.
- 1:35:35Yeah, that's the only thing that ever lets me watch stories, like
- 1:35:39these. Like, right, I can't take full
- 1:35:42on sadness. I can't take sadness from the
- 1:35:45first moment to the very end. I have never been able to watch
- 1:35:49any movie, any TV show from anywhere in the world, that is
- 1:35:53just that. And I take nothing from it like
- 1:35:55stories, where it starts serious and it progressively just gets
- 1:35:59worse, I do. Get any soccer from it.
- 1:36:03I don't get any more lessons from it.
- 1:36:05I Get No Satisfaction from it. I can write emotional education
- 1:36:09from it. So but stories told like this.
- 1:36:13Yeah. Hmm.
- 1:36:15Believe in. Yeah, I would agree.
- 1:36:17I would agree completely. I don't know if you had anything
- 1:36:21else to add. I've come to the end of my
- 1:36:22notes, we're good. Okay, I guess the one stray
- 1:36:26observation is that the sets for 90 the 1980s that they had this
- 1:36:31small Down even the freakin record store and the cafe that
- 1:36:34they go to. It seems like it is identical to
- 1:36:37the one in Snowdrop. I think they just use the same
- 1:36:41set. Yeah, I really do.
- 1:36:42Wow. Okay.
- 1:36:43Yeah. And both boys, even construct
- 1:36:46like a Matchstick Tower at some point in the waiting for, you
- 1:36:50know, their girl to arrive in the Cafe's.
- 1:36:54Yes, I'm like, oh my God. It's identical.
- 1:36:57So anyway, that's pretty much it.
- 1:36:59We're going to get out of here. Thank you.
