- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:06kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host Andrew McGivern for August 7th.
- 0:13Today is National Lighthouse Day, and if there's a more
- 0:17romantic and inspiring piece of architecture than a lighthouse,
- 0:21I haven't found it yet. Standing tall against the
- 0:24elements, cutting through fog and darkness, guiding ships
- 0:28safely home, lighthouses are basically the ultimate symbol of
- 0:32hope and guidance. National Lighthouse Day
- 0:36commemorates August 7th, 1789, when the US Congress passed an
- 0:41act establishing federal support for lighthouses, beacons, boys,
- 0:45and public peers. It was the first step in
- 0:49creating a systematic approach to maritime safety, and it
- 0:53authorized the construction of the first federal lighthouse.
- 0:57For hundreds of years, these towering Sentinels have been the
- 1:00difference between life and death for countless sailors.
- 1:04It weathered storms, stood against time and never wavered
- 1:08in their purpose to be a beacon of safety in the darkness.
- 1:13And there's something beautiful about lighthouses.
- 1:16They don't discriminate. Rich or poor, friend or enemy,
- 1:21every ship receives the same guidance, the same warning, the
- 1:26same safe harbor. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:30from Maya Angelou, who once said a wise person decides slowly,
- 1:37but abides by these decisions. Now you might be thinking, what
- 1:43does decision making have to do with lighthouses?
- 1:48Well, everything, actually. Think about it.
- 1:53A lighthouse makes 1 fundamental decision to shine every night
- 1:59without bail, regardless of weather conditions or how many
- 2:03ships might be out there, it makes the same choice.
- 2:07Rain or shine, storm or calm, busy shipping lanes or empty
- 2:12seas, the light goes on. That's the kind of steady,
- 2:17unwavering commitment Angelo was talking about.
- 2:21Once lighthouse keepers decided to take on that responsibility,
- 2:26they didn't waver. They didn't call in sick during
- 2:29storms or take nights off when the weather was rough.
- 2:33They understood that lives depended on their consistency.
- 2:38And there's something we can learn from that lighthouse
- 2:40mentality in our lives. We make decisions about who we
- 2:45want to be, the kind of friend we want to be, the kind of
- 2:49parent, the kind of professional.
- 2:53The lighthouse reminds us that these aren't one time decisions.
- 2:58Their daily choices to keep shining, to keep being reliable,
- 3:02to keep being that steady presence others can count on.
- 3:06Just last summer, we visited a lighthouse with some friends.
- 3:09It was cool to go there. And though lighthouses aren't
- 3:13really needed anymore, thanks to radar, GPS and other technology,
- 3:18they remain as symbols of safety and protection.
- 3:22So today, think about how you can be someone's lighthouse.
- 3:27Maybe it's being the reliable friend who always picks up the
- 3:30phone. Maybe it's being the Co worker
- 3:33who stays positive during tough projects.
- 3:37Maybe it's just being consistent in small acts of kindness.
- 3:41The lighthouse doesn't shine for applause or recognition.
- 3:45It shines because that's what it was built to do.
- 3:49And sometimes that steady, dependable light is exactly what
- 3:52someone needs to find their way home.
- 3:56That's going to do it for today. May you be a beacon of
- 3:59reliability and someone's storm, and may you always find safe
- 4:04harbor when you need it. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 4:07for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:12Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
