- 0:07SPEAKER_02: That is be sure and follow or subscribe to the Steve and Jeff Show wherever you listen to podcasts.
- 0:15SPEAKER_02: Write us a review while you're there too.
- 0:18SPEAKER_03: And now, here's Steve and Jeff.
- 0:23SPEAKER_03: Well, hey, Johnny, thanks for bringing us back into the show.
- 0:26SPEAKER_03: Uh Jeff, how you been?
- 0:28SPEAKER_03: Been so long.
- 0:29SPEAKER_03: What's going on?
- 0:30SPEAKER_03: It's been great.
- 0:32SPEAKER_04: All of a sudden it's fall.
- 0:34SPEAKER_04: You know, summer, we hardly knew ye.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: You know, that is so true, but you know, in Nebraska, it stays hot longer, you know.
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: So I I tend to stay inside.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: You know, bars are air conditioned, so I tend to stay inside and you know, in a bar.
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: Same thing in Chicago, although, you know, I don't drink.
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: So I usually just hang out in the waiting area of a dispensary, which is not quite as fun.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: Somebody might say, Oh, I bought this by mistake.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: So I'll take it.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: You know, it could be instructive, it could be educational too.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: I you know, for instance, last night I had a chance to check out the new AI robot bartender over at Duffy's, you know?
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: Unbelievable.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: That is so cool.
- 1:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, the only robots I'm familiar with are those vacuum cleaners.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: What are those called?
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, those are yeah, yeah.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: And we would get high and turn that thing on and and watch our our golden retrieval run around all freaked out.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: Is that the kind of stuff you're talking about?
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, Jeff AI has progressed way beyond that.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: This bartender bot actually entertains you.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: Uh it talks to you just just like a real bartender.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Anyway, I'm in I'm in Duffy's, and I I see that it's it's a bot.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: You're like, gosh, I gotta try this out.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: So robot bartender asks what I want to drink.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: So I say, Hey, a vodka martini.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: You know, I gotta stick with the vodka with you know, mom and all that.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: So brings me a vodka martini.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Literally the best martini I've ever had.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: And bartender says to me, I'm taking a sip.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: I'm just thinking, you know, he's gonna go do something else.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: He says to me, By the way, what's your IQ?
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, that's a little surprised.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: I've never had a bartender ask what my IQ is.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: I've had a bartender asks, Who the hell are you?
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: you know, and where's where's the money?
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: And I I mean I've had bad bartenders ask a variety of different things, but never my IQ, you know.
- 2:23SPEAKER_03: So I told him it was 142, which you know, Jeff, that is one point higher than you.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: That sounds like a familiar number to me.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: Then the robot started talking to me about physics, uh, this stuff about space and black holes and climate change, started talking about climate change and AI machine language.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, I understand some of the stuff, but boy, what I did understand was fascinating, very entertaining.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: I had a great time.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: So I you know, I drink the martini, goes away, comes back and asks me if I want another drink.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: And you know, I couldn't stop thinking about that IQ question.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: I w I was just gonna have one, but I I couldn't stop thinking about that IQ question.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I say, give me another vodka martini.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: And again, beautiful, wonderful tasting vodka martini.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: He says to me again, by the way, what's your IQ?
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: Well, I figured, let's let's see.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: You know how when you do when you play with chat GPT and you you put in stuff, you want to see if you're gonna get a certain answer, and you kind of kind of stack the question a little bit.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: So I said, Well, I'm gonna I'm gonna play with it a little bit.
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: So I said, Oh, my IQ is a hundred, which I guess I would still be one more than you, but you know, just to see what would happen.
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: So then robot starts to talk to me about NASCAR, hunting rifles, and how climate change really is fake.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: I'm amazed, you know.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, these guys have a the whole body of world knowledge, so they could talk about anything, I suppose.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: But you know, I think, okay, well, that's really fascinating.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: So I'm I start to leave, but you know, it's like I gotta I gotta try this one more time.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: So I go back, Robot says, What do you have again?
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: Hey, vodka martini again, obvious.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: I I think they're actually getting better.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: I think the third one was actually even better than the first one, and they were all wonderful.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: So then Robot leans in and says, Hey, by the way, what's your IQ?
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: Well, this time I'm gonna play with them.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: This time I say, Well, my IQ's 50, which that would still be one more than you, Jeff.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: And that's true.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: So Robot leans close to my ear and says, Isn't it terrible the way Biden stole the election?
- 4:21SPEAKER_04: That sounds about like a 50 IQ or 49 for me, I guess.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: 49 would be right.
- 4:27SPEAKER_04: So that AI stuff is amazing.
- 4:29SPEAKER_04: That is so above my pay grade.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't be surprised if at some point AI will replace a lot of stuff in our society.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: Like who knows, maybe even us as podcast hosts.
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: I mean, is it that hard to teach a machine how to ask about the weather or dreams every show?
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: I can't imagine it's that hard.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: If you just say to an AI machine, improvise, they'll improvise kind of like what we're doing here, right?
- 4:57SPEAKER_03: I mean you know, funny you should say that because I got this email the other day that I really I was gonna talk to you about this.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: You know, I was going through the emails of and it takes so long because with the let's face it, Jeff, the millions of people that send us emails.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: It's just it's just overwhelming some days, but this one really kind of stood out.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: It was from a listener who heard an interview on another comedy podcast show.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: And he said, Well, that was you guys.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: You were on the show.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: But you know, there was something was a little off about it, but he said, No, I that was you guys on the show.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: And he sent me a link to the interview.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: The podcast was called I Have to Ask with Elizabeth Hess.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: You know, I I don't know what to make of it.
- 5:45SPEAKER_03: I I don't remember us being guests on any show.
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: I you know, we haven't I don't either you know we've been guests on a lot of podcasts, and you know, I remember we were on Jeffrey Epstein's podcast, She Looks 16, I think was the name of it, or was that Matt Gates?
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: I I always get them them mixed up.
- 6:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, well, they do tend to blur together.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: Uh all I I don't remember really which one it was either, but I know it was a Republican and a pedophile.
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: But that doesn't really narrow it down that much.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: So I I think it was Matt Gates, was the one who protected by the Republicans, or maybe that was Epstein.
- 6:19SPEAKER_04: Well, they were both protected by the Republicans, so I guess it's really hard to figure out.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: But but didn't we do one for RFK Jr.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: a while back?
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: He did a podcast called Does a Bear Shit in the Park.
- 6:30SPEAKER_04: I think we did.
- 6:32SPEAKER_04: Maybe we were on his medical podcast, which was Blood, Sweat, and Beers.
- 6:36SPEAKER_04: I think it might be it, you know, where he was liquored up and then starts changing all the the laws banning all kinds of medical devices that save lives.
- 6:45SPEAKER_04: So I think we were on that show.
- 6:46SPEAKER_04: I I think it's a comedy.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Well, I think he was hoping that we would be the heroine.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: Oh, I said no pun intended.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Oh gosh, I'm sorry.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: I mean that we would be the hero of his show, but I digress.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: Maybe we should listen to this show, this this I have to ask with Elizabeth Hess, and just see if it's us.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, I you know, I I think we'd know if it was us, right?
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: We'd remember doing it.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're old.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: Come on, we're not that yeah, come on.
- 7:13SPEAKER_04: It is weird that I don't remember anything about it.
- 7:15SPEAKER_04: So, yeah, take a listen.
- 7:16SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to I Have to Ask with Elizabeth Hess.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: I am your host, and I am joined today by new friends, Steven Alloy and Jeff Sharf of the Stephen Jeff Show.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Good evening, and thank you both for joining me.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: Hey, Elizabeth, good to be here with you.
- 7:30SPEAKER_04: Hi, Elizabeth.
- 7:31SPEAKER_04: It's nice to be here.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: Hi, Steve.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: Hey, Jeff, how are you doing?
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: One time no see.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: How you been?
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: Good.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: We've all been recently asked to host podcasts for Indivisible, Illinois.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: I know who asked me, Marcy Adelson Schaefer.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: How did you two get involved, by the way?
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Before we get into your back history, why are we all here together and how did you get involved?
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think it probably started with me.
- 7:52SPEAKER_04: I was volunteering for Kamala Harris for president and knocking on doors in Wisconsin.
- 8:00SPEAKER_04: And through the process of going up with a group of people, I would tell them a little bit about what Steve and I do with our podcast.
- 8:07SPEAKER_04: And from there, somebody said, Oh, do you ever do anything political?
- 8:10SPEAKER_04: And we really weren't doing much political.
- 8:12SPEAKER_04: And then I came back to Steve.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: We talked about it and we did some political stuff.
- 8:16SPEAKER_04: We endorsed Kamala Harris in one episode, and it just kind of took off from there.
- 8:21SPEAKER_04: And then we met Patrick and Marcy, and somewhere along the way, they invited us to start doing interviews.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Have you covered a lot of politics in the Steve and Jeff show, or have you pretty much avoided it up until now?
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: I like to say that we didn't avoid politics previously, but we weren't really a political show.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: But we have become more political, I think, because the world is more political.
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: And you know, I think that kind of led to some of the work with Indivisible.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: And we've done one episode with them so far, and uh, hopefully we'll do some more.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Let's start at the beginning, though.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: How did you two meet?
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: I'll start with you, Steve, this time.
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: We actually met over 50 years ago.
- 8:56SPEAKER_03: I know that's hard to believe because we look so young that people can't see us, but trust me, we look young.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: And in a youth group, I was from Peoria, Illinois.
- 9:03SPEAKER_03: Jeff was from Urbana, but this youth group covered the part of the Midwest, and so we would see each other at these events and everything.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: We became friends.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: We just kind of, you know, we realized we had the same sense of humor, a very similar sense of humor, and we just kind of became friends and started doing funny things even then.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: I mean, we've really we've kind of always done funny things together.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: Back then, the comedy was mostly just to crack ourselves up.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: I don't think we really made really anybody else laugh, but we cracked up.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: We were great, right?
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Isn't that all that matters?
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: How about you, Jeff?
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: What are your memories of meeting Steve?
- 9:36SPEAKER_04: Oh, I think it was obnoxious at first sight.
- 9:39SPEAKER_04: It was, yeah.
- 9:39SPEAKER_04: Well, Steve and I left that part out, but yeah, but we were very obnoxious.
- 9:43SPEAKER_04: I do remember that Steve and I both played guitar.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: We wrote songs that we performed, really doesn't hold up historically very well, but we did it and we had courage.
- 9:55SPEAKER_04: We were willing to do almost anything, and I think that really bode well for us in the future, and we just have stayed close all these years.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: I should add those songs were funny, uh, like to a 14-year-old.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: So imagine a 14-year-old writing songs that they think are funny.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: That was them.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Jeff, I want to know from you how did you get inspired to create a podcast?
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: A lot of us started a podcast during the pandemic because we had extra time.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Why would you do this one?
- 10:26SPEAKER_04: So, Steve and I, even though we have been friends, we were on different tracks.
- 10:30SPEAKER_04: But the one thing we had common between us was that we both took classes at Second City in Improv.
- 10:36SPEAKER_04: Steve ended up continuing doing improv as he does now.
- 10:40SPEAKER_04: I think you're in at least two or three different groups in improv.
- 10:44SPEAKER_04: I drifted off into doing some storytelling and writing a blog called Jubering, Deep Thoughts of a Jewish Uber Driver.
- 10:55SPEAKER_04: And at one point, we just sort of merged together.
- 10:58SPEAKER_04: We would have a discussion and we would say, why don't we try to do something together?
- 11:02SPEAKER_04: And it was kind of during that pandemic period where we put our heads together.
- 11:08SPEAKER_04: We also realized that podcasts are not really that hard to do, at least to get started, to do them well.
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: I guess we'll figure out if we could ever do that.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: How about you, Steve?
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Why would you get involved?
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: You know, I think I did have that vibe.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: I wanted to do something comedy and silly.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: You know, as Jeff had mentioned, I've stayed with improv and I'm still doing it.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: But as you get older, it's a little harder to move around, do the physicality on the stage.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: So I started looking for other ways to be funny.
- 11:35SPEAKER_03: And this seemed perfect because I can sit in a chair as well as anybody.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: You know, if we could do that, that's something I could keep doing into even older age.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: In a way, I feel kind of like I maybe I dragged Jeff into a podcast because Jeff really contacted me.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: He was doing the Jubrien blog.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: And we're talking about, well, maybe do a blog.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: And I said, you know what I've been thinking about?
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: I've been thinking about doing a podcast.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: So we started talking about that.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: It was like next thing I knew, we were doing a podcast.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Jeff, would you say that it is scripted?
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Would you say it's improv or 50-50?
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: How would you describe the show?
- 12:07SPEAKER_04: When we started the show, it was all improv.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: Our show is completely fake.
- 12:13SPEAKER_04: All of our guests are fake.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: When we started it, we would use improv actors that Steve worked with in the different groups that he was in, and they were fine doing improv on their own.
- 12:24SPEAKER_04: But sometimes we would have people that struggled a little bit with the structure.
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: So we started to script it.
- 12:31SPEAKER_04: We write a script every week.
- 12:33SPEAKER_04: It's sort of hard to figure out whether we follow all of it or not because we drift off a lot.
- 12:38SPEAKER_04: And depending on the skill set and the comfort level of our guests, they don't even have to follow the script if they don't want to.
- 12:46SPEAKER_04: And I think at the end of the day, the value of what we do is really more in that interaction as opposed to the written word or the things that we put into the scripts.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: What about you, Steve?
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: You're the person behind the editing of it.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: I know you do the technical part of it.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Do you feel more comfortable when you're scripting things, or your improv guide?
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Can you just turn on a mic and be funny?
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: Typically, Jeff will write the script.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: You know, we'll talk about an idea, maybe, or it'll be Jeff's idea, or one of us will have an idea.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: He'll typically write the script.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: What I do then is I read the script and I decide where I'm going to improvise.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: Most of my contribution is improv.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I would agree with what Jeff said about a lot of the guests.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: They're improv actors.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: Most of them are very comfortable improvising, but some like the script, some follow very closely the script.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: To a lot of them, I'll say that these are your talking points.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: This is kind of our roadmap.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: Do whatever you want to do to get there.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: They do.
- 13:43SPEAKER_04: And even when we look back at the earlier episodes, we've been doing it for three years.
- 13:48SPEAKER_04: I think we have over 120 episodes.
- 13:50SPEAKER_04: And when we look back at the old episodes, some of them lasted as long as almost an hour.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: And that would have a lot to do with not being scripted, that it would just sort of take on a life of its own and we would let it go because we were enjoying it, which is really the ultimate goal, is for us to enjoy what we're doing.
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: And you know, so now it's a little tighter.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: That is the good news and the bad news about improv is it can go anywhere.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: And unfortunately, it can go anywhere, and sometimes it does.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: So it's kind of nice to have a roadmap.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Some of my favorite comedians, obviously, we all love George Carlin, but Sarah Silverman is a personal favorite.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: And people ask her, Are there topics you avoid or is everything fair game?
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: And she said it used to be the Holocaust, but now she just really doesn't have a hard red line.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Steve, would you agree with that?
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: That everything's fair game?
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: For the most part, yes.
- 14:40SPEAKER_03: We certainly take on a lot of thorny issues, you know, things like Tourette's syndrome.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: And we actually had a sort of a joke about the Holocaust on the show.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: So yeah, we pretty much do that.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: I'm probably a little more cautious than Jeff is.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: Jeff wants to maybe take it a little bit further.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, I want the attention, but I want I don't necessarily want to be known as the guy who's promoting, you know, whatever out there.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: So I'm maybe a little more cautious, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we don't like invade issues that some people might think are off base.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: We, like I say, had a whole show about uh Tourette's syndrome, making fun of it, basically.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: So yeah, no, we yeah, we kind of do a lot.
- 15:16SPEAKER_04: It wasn't just Tourette's, it was juvenile Tourette's.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: Juvenile Tourette's, yeah.
- 15:20SPEAKER_04: So I mean that's completely different.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: But let me ask you this uh Jeff, I'll start with you on this one.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Are there recurring characters or jokes?
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: The Simpsons made an entire 27-year history of a pooh and Selma and Patty.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: Do you have people like that on it?
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: Actually, I think we've had the Tourette syndrome guest twice, haven't we, Steve?
- 15:40SPEAKER_04: One when she grew up and one when she was still a child.
- 15:44SPEAKER_04: But in general, I would say that Steve's mom has been probably my favorite guest out of all of them.
- 15:51SPEAKER_04: Again, these are all fake.
- 15:52SPEAKER_04: Steve's mom's not my actual mom.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: Not here.
- 15:55SPEAKER_04: No, that was probably my favorite.
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: Your girlfriend, not your real girlfriend, girlfriend from sixth grade, a fake girlfriend from sixth grade.
- 16:03SPEAKER_04: Those are the two that I can remember being on more than once.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: We've had a few.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, those are the probably the most recurring.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: The shick with my mom is that she's 90 and she was impregnated by Jeff's fake dad.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: And we have Jeff's dad and Jeff's real dad, and then there's a guy that pretended to be Jeff's dad, who's a recurring recurring character too.
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: And that's the one that is the father of my 90-year-old mother's new baby.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: Makes for some some interesting comedy.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: Did the conception happen during the show, or was it or do you not even cross that line?
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Like, do you do audio and sound effects?
- 16:42SPEAKER_04: My father's in Joliet Penitentiary, so it it took place during a conjugal visit.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: We didn't actually do it on the show, but funny she mentioned sound effects and audio that way.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: That is one of the areas we've done some with that.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: We've done some sound effect backgrounds, music backgrounds, and different settings.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: We did an entire show at a Dave and Busters.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: It just had noise, just had carnival noise in the background.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: It wasn't really a Dave and Busters.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: I think that's an area I'd like to do more of, too.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Time out and back up.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Jeff, you had me going at the fact that your dad was in, and then I remembered that they closed the Joliet facilities.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: That was a joke.
- 17:17SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 17:18SPEAKER_04: No, my dad was not really at Joliet.
- 17:21SPEAKER_04: You know, he was at another prison.
- 17:23SPEAKER_04: It wasn't any prisons.
- 17:24SPEAKER_04: No, they never caught him.
- 17:25SPEAKER_03: No, he was good.
- 17:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they never caught him.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: I think, doesn't Joliet still have some sort of correctional facility from what I remember.
- 17:32SPEAKER_04: I know they the original one they used for Halloween scaring kids, and you can go for trick-or-treating, which is just really disgusting.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: I know, but you said it just kind of blasé, and we carried on with the show.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: But is this part of what the show is about?
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: That you just say such ridiculous things and have characters on, and we don't know what's true and when we should suspend disbelief.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: Kind of, yeah.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: That is kind of the show.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:56SPEAKER_04: Nothing is true.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: For example, we had a guest on Australian doctor who wrote a book on how to avoid getting COVID.
- 18:07SPEAKER_04: Well, how to cure COVID.
- 18:08SPEAKER_04: How to cure COVID.
- 18:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, cure COVID, yeah.
- 18:10SPEAKER_04: He had 10 tips on how to do that.
- 18:12SPEAKER_04: And his first tip was to spread COVID to nine different people or 10 different people because the virus divides by the number of people you give it to.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: So if you give it to 10 people, you only have one tenth of the COVID left.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: That doctor now is the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: Did you know that?
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: We have elected the dumbest person for that position.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about the fact that you went from doing this fun show to Indivisible, which can still be fun.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Your first guest was Bill Davis.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: So tell me a little bit about that.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: And was that a different feeling while you were preparing for that show and recording that show?
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Were you not as in your element for that?
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Let's start with you, Jeff.
- 18:53SPEAKER_04: Bill Davis was hand selected because I don't think anybody knew based on our show what we were going to sound like and how close we were to what the show actually does, which is really more silly and not mean, except when it comes to trauma, but in general, not mean.
- 19:12SPEAKER_04: So Bill was sort of selected for this because he has a really good sense of humor.
- 19:16SPEAKER_04: And it was a really good experience for us.
- 19:19SPEAKER_04: And it gave us an opportunity to modify what we do.
- 19:24SPEAKER_04: And I think Bill had a good time, and it certainly was a good experience for me.
- 19:30SPEAKER_04: What about you, Steve?
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: I would agree.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: I think Bill was selected because they thought, to the extent that they knew what our show is, they thought who could put up with this, who would go along with this?
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: They go, Oh, Bill would.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: I thought it was a lot of fun.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: Actually, he got it right away.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: He made his own jokes, totally got the concept.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: And it was different than our typical shows in a few ways.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, we were trying to be funny, but we were a little more serious.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: I mean, we asked like real questions, and obviously he was a real guest as opposed to an actor playing a guest, so that was different.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: And then his answers obviously were different.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: Most of his answers weren't, you know, comedic.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: We did a little comedy with him at the beginning, but most of his answers were real answers.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Let me give my audience an example of how realistic your commercials sound.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Here's a sound bite.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: Do you want a better relationship with your partner, but are worried you may have to make some changes in yourself?
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: Well, worry no more.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: Get counseling with Stephen Jeff's Your Fault Marriage Counseling.
- 20:26SPEAKER_03: At your fault, our team of unlicensed former baristas can set your relationship on the right course without requiring any personal responsibility at all.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: You know that the problems are all with your spouse, right?
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: Let us prove it.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: Visit your fault.com to start your journey to marital bliss.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Your Indivisible podcast would be so much fun, but you need the right guest.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: Do both of you, and I'll start with you this time, Steve, have a dream guest for either the Steve and Jeff show or Indivisible or somebody that could work on both.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: Oh, absolutely.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: And some of these people could work on both.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: We have talked about this quite a few times.
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: And I think the two names that always come up, if we could have anybody, Al Franken, and if we could bring him back, George Carlin.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: George Carlin, yeah.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: My brain is just going, oh my gosh.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Al Franken and George Carlin.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: I would add, because I think I'm a little more cautious, maybe than Jeff, on edgy issues.
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: I would also like to have on if we could bring anybody from any time period, Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, and Larry David.
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: Because I think they would help me get over some of that unwillingness to offend.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: How about you, Jeff?
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: Do you have a dream guest or person on either Indivisible or Steve and Jeff that you would like to talk to?
- 21:39SPEAKER_04: Steve and I are so similar in our tastes.
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: I think I share the same list that he gave, except I would add Firesign Theater, a member or two of Firesign Theater.
- 21:49SPEAKER_04: Firesign theater, most people don't know, was guys who were originally on the radio that created crazy characters and they had.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Had, I don't know, eight or ten albums, maybe even more, where they performed.
- 22:05SPEAKER_04: And I think Steve and I, even from the beginning when we first met, fell in love with Firesign Theater.
- 22:10SPEAKER_04: And I think that's kind of carried us all the way up to this show now.
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: So if I could, I would have them on just to shout out and say that we were thinking of them and that we tried to do our best to do that.
- 22:22SPEAKER_04: A side note is I do have a tendency to try to track people down occasionally.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: And I did find a daughter of one of the original performers of Firesign Theater.
- 22:31SPEAKER_04: And I tried to get her on our show, but I wasn't real successful with that.
- 22:35SPEAKER_04: But I'm still trying.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Here's another commercial from the Stephen Jeff Show.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Is it real?
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: Is it parody?
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: You decide.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: Do you want to get out of a problem marriage, but are worried that acting on it may hurt your financial settlement?
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: Well, worry no more.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: Get started with Stephen Jeff's Your Fault Divorce Service.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: At your fault, our team of divorced bitter and hostile associates can get you out of that marriage without having to admit you did anything wrong.
- 22:59SPEAKER_03: You know the problem is your spouse, right?
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: Let us prove it.
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: 10% discount for former marriage counseling customers.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: Visit yourfault.com to start your journey back to the single life.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: Jeff, I would like you to tell the story of meeting Bob Dylan.
- 23:15SPEAKER_04: I grew up in Urbana.
- 23:16SPEAKER_04: I belonged to Sinai Temple, and my rabbi was from Minnesota.
- 23:21SPEAKER_04: And the word was, which I think has been confirmed, that he had barred mitzvah Bob Dylan.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: And I went off to college, worked as a night cleaner or whatever at a hotel where all the celebrities came that performed, and Bob Dylan came.
- 23:35SPEAKER_04: And I was sure I was going to be able to meet him.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: You know, we would party together, write songs together.
- 23:41SPEAKER_04: That was my dream.
- 23:43SPEAKER_04: And I found him swimming in the pool.
- 23:45SPEAKER_04: And I went up to him and told him that I was a big fan and that I needed to ask him a question.
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: And he asked me what the question was.
- 23:52SPEAKER_04: And I said, I heard that my rabbi bar mitzvah, you and he said, What's your rabbi's name?
- 23:58SPEAKER_04: And he said it like Bob Dylan talks.
- 24:00SPEAKER_04: And I said, Rabbi Newman, he says, Well, you can tell your rabbi that he's a blanking liar.
- 24:07SPEAKER_04: And then he turned around and swam away.
- 24:09SPEAKER_04: And at that time, because I'm old, there was no Googling.
- 24:12SPEAKER_04: So I had thought, well, you know, maybe the rabbi was mistaken or whatever.
- 24:18SPEAKER_04: But then later we did Google him.
- 24:20SPEAKER_04: And it turns out that yeah, Bob Dylan was Bar mitzvah.
- 24:24SPEAKER_04: And that he was just, you know, trying to get back at me because I'm interrupting his private time.
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: For maybe most people, they'd be horrified.
- 24:34SPEAKER_04: For me, it was wonderful because he could have said anything to me and I would have been happy.
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: And to have Bob Dylan call me a name is just the best thing that's ever happened to me.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: What about you, Steve?
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: Have you had an encounter with a celebrity that went about as well as that one did?
- 24:50SPEAKER_03: I don't know that I've had one that was quite that good.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: This is gosh, this is probably 40 years ago.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: I was on an elevator in New York in a building and coming down a couple floors after I got on, door opens, Martin Sheen gets on, and he is unbelievably hung over.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: So I want to talk to him.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: You know, this is like seven in the morning.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: He's wearing sunglasses and he's got his head down.
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: I want to talk to him, but I thought, I'm a little afraid to.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: I've seen apocalypse now.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: I didn't know what would happen.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Tall, short, handsome, not handsome.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: He was not as tall as he looks on the screen.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: Let me put that way.
- 25:26SPEAKER_03: He looked very much like he does on the screen, but he's not that tall.
- 25:29SPEAKER_04: One other thing, Elizabeth, Steve and I actually met another famous person, but we didn't realize they were famous at the time that we met them.
- 25:36SPEAKER_04: We performed at the Red Herring.
- 25:38SPEAKER_04: We played guitar there.
- 25:40SPEAKER_04: We got up on open mic night and sang one of our really horrible 14-year-old songs.
- 25:47SPEAKER_04: Which was a huge hit, I might agree.
- 25:49SPEAKER_04: It was.
- 25:49SPEAKER_04: The crowd loved it because they were all like 16, maybe.
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, sure.
- 25:54SPEAKER_04: The music director was Dan Fogelberg.
- 25:56SPEAKER_04: Oh my goodness.
- 25:57SPEAKER_04: So he worked at the Red Herring.
- 25:58SPEAKER_04: Unfortunately, he didn't tell us that he was going to be famous because if he had and pointed that out, I'm sure that we would have bonded with him.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: And you know, then I would have wanted him to tell me that my rabbi is a blank and liar.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: I do want to ask you how to find the Steve and Jeff show because you've sent me clips and it takes a lot to get me to laugh out loud, but I did.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: So where can people listen and follow your show?
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: I am so happy to hear that you laughed out loud.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: Thank you very much.
- 26:25SPEAKER_03: Uh our show streams really anywhere that people listen to podcasts.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: We're on, you know, Apple, Spotify, you know, Amazon, all the usual podcast places.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: And we also have a website, stepandjeff.com.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: So it's the Steve and Jeff show wherever you listen to podcasts.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: I do have to ask both of you, and this is not your I have to ask question, who's whom on the website, left or right?
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: Which one is Steve?
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: Which one's Jeff?
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm the tall one, but it's just a headshot, so it's hard to tell.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: It's almost like that Simon Garfunkel shot on bookends, you know, except we have the clown noses.
- 26:57SPEAKER_03: If I remember right, if you're looking at it, I think Jeff's on the left, I'm on the right.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: Well, now people have to go to the website and see what I'm talking about.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: So at the end of every podcast that I have, I have to ask a question of my guests that I haven't told them in advance.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't give you time, but since you're both improv, you'll answer this like champions.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to start with you, Jeff.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: I am going to appoint you to any position you want in the government, local, state, you could be a senator, you could be president, you could be a governor.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: What would you choose if you didn't have to run and you just were there?
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: You suddenly appeared as that.
- 27:30SPEAKER_04: That's not a hypothetical because I'm actually qualified to be in any of those positions based on the people who are currently running our country.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: But I would say I think I probably would want to be one of those rebel illegal state representatives from Texas that came.
- 27:50SPEAKER_04: I think that would make me happy to protest and hang out.
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't want to be in Illinois.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: I guess I'd have to choose another state.
- 27:57SPEAKER_04: But I think that's probably what I would want to be.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Is there anyone, male or female, Jeff, that you have a crush on in government?
- 28:05SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's a really good question.
- 28:08SPEAKER_04: You know, President Obama is just my hero.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's the last great, smart, appropriate, charismatic president that we've had in maybe of my lifetime.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: Excellent answer.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Steve, I'm gonna ask you the same thing.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Are you governor of a state?
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: Are you president?
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: Are you, I don't know, you could be township supervisor.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: What do you want to be?
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: I've actually thought about this this in the in the past.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: Earlier in my life, I always thought, wouldn't it be great to be ambassador to like Switzerland?
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, nothing bad's gonna happen.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, you just got a cool gig and you hang out in Switzerland and you go to parties.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: I I thought it'd be great.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: These days I don't want to be involved in any foreign policy that we're doing.
- 28:49SPEAKER_03: I think based on recent history, I'm really highly overqualified to be president.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: I think if I could be in any office, I'd probably take the place of my congressman.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: I'd be in the house.
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: I would certainly represent people better than my congressman does.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: Good answer, but do you have a political crush?
- 29:08SPEAKER_03: I know, Jeff.
- 29:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know you keep looking at that for Christy Noam, but I don't think that's a crush, really.
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know.
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: As far as a like a politician that I really think a lot of, I don't I don't know if it rises to crush personally, or there is a political crush, not a personal crush, maybe.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: There are a few senators that I like quite a bit.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: Actually, I like the Illinois governor, Fritzburg.
- 29:29SPEAKER_03: He's very good too.
- 29:30SPEAKER_03: But I also like some of the senators that maybe don't get a lot of attention, like White House from Rhode Island.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: I think he does a great job.
- 29:38SPEAKER_03: I think Murphy, Murphy from Connecticut is another one.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: They're out there, they're doing good work.
- 29:43SPEAKER_03: It's just, you know, sometimes it's hard.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: So Sarah Huckabee Sanders is not your answer.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: No, no, not really.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: I, you know, so it's a little better, but she really needs the full MAGA facelift.
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: Just to clarify, because you know, people will probably think that I'm just screwing around or whatever, but the Christy Gnome thing, there's a reason I am attracted to her so much because one of our earlier shows was it our second show, Steve, where I had a nose job.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: Oh, you did the nose job, right?
- 30:09SPEAKER_04: I had a nose job performed at a red roof in Omaha, Nebraska.
- 30:14SPEAKER_04: And I think we connect on that level.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: You know, we both have had so much work done.
- 30:19SPEAKER_04: I understand her pain, I understand how hard it is to breathe sometimes.
- 30:23SPEAKER_04: For me, Christy Gnome is the best.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: Well, you need to go back in for the rest of the package, get the whole, get the lips, get the whole thing.
- 30:31SPEAKER_04: The gnome package, the gnome package.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: That's I don't know if I can afford that.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: That's they all kind of have the same work done.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: It has been an honor and a pleasure getting to know both of you with the Indivisible Illinois.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, we'll have more publicity for the podcast and we will cross paths on that.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: In the meantime, thank you for listening to I Have to Ask with Elizabeth Huss, Steven Alloy and Jeff Sharf.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: Thank you for joining me tonight.
- 30:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, thank you for having us.
- 30:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, thank you.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: Hey, you know, you know, those are two interesting guys.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: I wish we were that cool.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: Sounds like us.
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: Boy, that Steve guy is clearly at least one point smarter than that Jeff guy.
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, you can really tell, couldn't you?
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: I mean, what do you think?
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: I I don't know.
- 31:13SPEAKER_04: I I mean, I have to admit that the guy who called himself Jeff was really funny, and from the picture, it looked he looked really handsome, although I think that may be our picture.
- 31:22SPEAKER_04: So I don't know where they got that.
- 31:24SPEAKER_04: But all I know is that Elizabeth Hess, this whoever this person is who who has the podcast, she's really professional.
- 31:33SPEAKER_04: She knows how to do an interview.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: Oh, absolutely.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: You know, hey, maybe we could contact her and get her on our show.
- 31:39SPEAKER_03: And if we do, if we see her and if we talk to her, it'll ring a bell and remember, oh, yeah, we did do this show, or that or no, or we'll know that it wasn't us, you know.
- 31:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it I think that's a good idea.
- 31:51SPEAKER_04: Although it very well could be AI, Steve.
- 31:55SPEAKER_04: This could be a case where somebody is doing an impression of us.
- 31:59SPEAKER_04: It could be that this Elizabeth Hess, because she was so good, she might be AI as well.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: Well, she could, and you know, if she is AI and we can get her on the show, maybe maybe she makes a great martini.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, who knows?
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: I'll bring some I'll bring some pop-up just in case, you know, because you know, you never know if she does.
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: Woo, that'd be great.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: I think we need to get her on the show and really just get to the bottom of this.
- 32:22SPEAKER_04: But before we go, do you ever have any concerns about Johnny?
- 32:25SPEAKER_04: I mean, again, I'm starting to get paranoid here.
- 32:28SPEAKER_04: Is everybody AI?
- 32:29SPEAKER_04: Are we AI AI?
- 32:31SPEAKER_04: Would we know that we were AI?
- 32:32SPEAKER_04: I just got done watching Twilight Zone episodes, and this would be the kind of episode where it turns out that they wanted to eat us.
- 32:40SPEAKER_04: It's a cookbook.
- 32:41SPEAKER_04: It's a cookbook.
- 32:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think that probably proves I'm not AI by bringing that up, but but yes, I I am a little concerned we may be fake as well.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: I mean, how would we know?
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: Would we know?
- 32:53unknown: I don't know.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: You know, I mean, I think Johnny's real.
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, Johnny, Johnny's hanging with my mom.
