Transcript
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: It's 1928.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: The Academy Budget Picture Artist scientists ended out of order that they consider the best of the year.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: And another ton of money that we have there on the video.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: This is Academy vs.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Audience, where we rewatch all the best picture winners and the corresponding box of its championship.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: I'm dead given to you, so it's Aaron Weir.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: How's it going, Aaron?
- 0:33SPEAKER_05: Dan, you know what?
- 0:34SPEAKER_05: It's good.
- 0:35SPEAKER_05: It's nice out.
- 0:36SPEAKER_05: We had some fun this week.
- 0:38SPEAKER_05: We've been bantering and gossiping.
- 0:40SPEAKER_05: Things are great.
- 0:41SPEAKER_05: How are you?
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Doing well.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Uh I've got my boy dinner of calabrese, salami, a wedge of Griere, and somewhere, maybe still in my garage, there are chips.
- 0:54SPEAKER_05: Ooh.
- 0:54SPEAKER_06: Ooh.
- 0:55SPEAKER_06: Now I'm hungry.
- 0:57SPEAKER_06: I know, right?
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: And Claire Bolton, what's up, Claire?
- 1:00SPEAKER_06: I'm halfway through summer camp, so it's going great.
- 1:07SPEAKER_06: It really is.
- 1:07SPEAKER_06: It's truly great.
- 1:09SPEAKER_06: Summer camp is the best time of year.
- 1:11SPEAKER_06: It's so good.
- 1:12SPEAKER_06: I love it.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: So yeah, everything's great.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Well, let's hope that stays that way as we get into our movie chats.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: It is 2021.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: And Hollywood, much like the world, is starting to try to limp back into functionality.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: It'll be take until towards the end of the year for Hollywood to truly come back its savior, being not just a man, but a man who does whatever a spider can.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: But until then there was, of course, Oscars to talk about.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Following the ratings debacle for the ceremony of 2021, celebrating the films of 2020, they firmly restored the official rule to ten films.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Not up to ten, not eight, and we'll call it a day.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Definitely ten, and for the love of God, one of you tried to nominate a hit.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: What this means, having a firm ten, as we will see in the years to come, is that there is often that one.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: The one vague pity candidate that some people love endlessly, but only manages to score like one or two other nominations outside of Best Picture.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And you never expect that one to win?
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: But let's talk Coda.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Ruby is a child of deaf parents, or Coda.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: The only hearing member of her immediate family, she's juggling her last year of high school with working on her father's fishing boat with her brother, but her true passion is something her family can't fully understand.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Singing.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: When a cute boy in her class signs up for choir, she impulsively follows, and is forced to sing in front of people who know she's doing it for the first time, finds she's actually pretty good at it.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Her teacher recommends she apply to a Boston music academy, but wouldn't you know it?
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: This is right when her family needs her the most, as after hitting a breaking point with rising costs and being underpaid by middlemen, her family's founding a co-op to sell their catch directly to the consumer, inviting the other boats to join.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: A daunting task, even more so for deaf fishers in a hearing world.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Ruby is torn between a dream and her family's reality.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: A mother who's afraid for her to go, a brother who resents the idea he needs his little sister to function in the world, and a father trying to maintain a way of life the man doesn't think he can handle.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: How will it all end?
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: You can probably guess.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: We're not reinventing genres here, just playing the hits.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: The only surprise is how little that cute boy matters overall.
- 3:39SPEAKER_05: It's true.
- 3:39SPEAKER_05: It's not about him, it's about the family.
- 3:42SPEAKER_05: The cute boy in this movie is her brother, who has his own tiny romance.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Does.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: The brother has his own romantic subplot.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: This got some mixed reviews from the deaf community, but one aspect they did seem to appreciate is that the portrayal of deaf people as very sexual beings, because characters with disabilities are often portrayed in a kind of a neutered fashion in a lot of Western film and television.
- 4:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 4:13SPEAKER_06: No, I loved the I loved the scene.
- 4:17SPEAKER_06: Okay, I this is a movie for me.
- 4:18SPEAKER_06: This was my movie.
- 4:19SPEAKER_06: I loved it a lot.
- 4:21SPEAKER_06: But I especially enjoyed the two scenes where the parents are just talking about how much they love boning, and one of them is with the doctor when he's like, Yes, you can't have sex because you gotta deal with the situation.
- 4:40SPEAKER_06: With your jockitch.
- 4:41SPEAKER_06: With your jockey, you gotta deal with that, and you can't have sex for two weeks.
- 4:45SPEAKER_06: And they're both like, ah! Impossible!
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Can't be what?
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Furiously signing in the doctor that this is uh this is a maddening request.
- 4:55SPEAKER_06: I love and I love that the scene like cuts right after that.
- 4:59SPEAKER_06: They're like perfect time, perfect ending to a scene.
- 5:03SPEAKER_06: Glorious.
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: I mean, Marley Matlin is very hot, which I never realized when she was on her FBI show with the dog.
- 5:12SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 5:12SPEAKER_05: Is that that's the show she was on?
- 5:14SPEAKER_06: Like um, yeah.
- 5:15SPEAKER_06: Um, Sue PI or something.
- 5:18SPEAKER_06: Sue Thomas FBI.
- 5:20SPEAKER_06: That was it.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, FBI, because she could see but not here.
- 5:24SPEAKER_06: With the eye, yes.
- 5:25SPEAKER_06: Yes, yes.
- 5:26SPEAKER_05: I didn't realize she was that hot, but she is beautiful in this movie.
- 5:30SPEAKER_05: She's so beautiful.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Hmm.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: I'm convinced that one of the reasons Moira Kelly got written off that show unceremoniously after one year is that she was supposed to be a foil for Josh, but any woman they put in a scene with him had more chemistry.
- 5:54SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, Moira Kelly doesn't have great chemistry with people.
- 6:00SPEAKER_05: I've watched One Tree Hill.
- 6:02SPEAKER_05: I know what that woman does.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Because I am who I am and my brain does what it does.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: My very first note is Detective Fusco! Because there is a cast member person of interest in this movie.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And I can't not notice that.
- 6:16SPEAKER_06: Uh fair.
- 6:17SPEAKER_06: Fair, fair.
- 6:18SPEAKER_06: I loved how high school this movie was.
- 6:22SPEAKER_06: Like it's dealing with some really big issues and some really big like her whole the need to be with your family and what do you do and her family's in a way reliance on her.
- 6:34SPEAKER_06: Like I loved all that, but I also loved how high school it was.
- 6:38SPEAKER_06: Like she's just trying to high school.
- 6:40SPEAKER_05: The way they make fun of her is so teenage.
- 6:43SPEAKER_05: Like, sometimes movies don't quite nail that.
- 6:46SPEAKER_05: This was so accurate.
- 6:48SPEAKER_05: And of course, this boy shares the story that he heard her parents having sex.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: Like, of course the teenage boy thinks that's funny and is gonna tell his tell his friend, and not realize it's gonna let mean girls mean.
- 7:00SPEAKER_06: And I love, I love the moment where he's like, but I didn't tell anybody.
- 7:04SPEAKER_06: Just my best friend.
- 7:06SPEAKER_06: That's not everybody has one person.
- 7:08SPEAKER_06: I was like, that is the most teenager thing to do.
- 7:12SPEAKER_06: To be like, but I didn't do it.
- 7:14SPEAKER_06: I didn't like it's so good.
- 7:16SPEAKER_06: And then him being like, what can I do to make it up to you?
- 7:18SPEAKER_06: And she's like, literally nothing.
- 7:20SPEAKER_06: He's like, okay, I'm gonna text you every single hour for like the next like however long it takes.
- 7:24SPEAKER_06: And she's like, Don't do that.
- 7:25SPEAKER_06: He's like, yeah, that's psychotic.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Yep, I'm not doing that.
- 7:29SPEAKER_06: Well, like, it's so teenager, it's so good.
- 7:33SPEAKER_06: Mm-hmm.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: At the risk of dragging us to Aaron Sorgan too many times, he he fell into that same trap as a sports night exchange that became a line in Mamma Mia, here we go again.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Of well, it Natalie's my second in command.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: She's the only one I told.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Jeremy's my boyfriend, he's the only one I told.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I told many, many people.
- 7:55SPEAKER_06: It it's just so I also I love Mr.
- 7:59SPEAKER_06: V.
- 8:00SPEAKER_06: I love him.
- 8:01SPEAKER_06: I think he's great.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: You don't necessarily think you're going to off his first scene.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: But he's good.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: He believes in her.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: He just will not be taken for granted.
- 8:15SPEAKER_06: Yes, which I really like.
- 8:16SPEAKER_06: Like, and yes, the movie does because it's gotta drive the plot along.
- 8:20SPEAKER_06: There are some things where you're like, ooh, E, don't that's not great.
- 8:24SPEAKER_06: But for the most part, I like that he's setting the boundaries with her and he's like, You're late.
- 8:30SPEAKER_06: You're wasting my time.
- 8:32SPEAKER_06: And I told you, don't waste my time.
- 8:34SPEAKER_06: I don't waste my time.
- 8:36SPEAKER_06: I don't waste your time, so you can't do it either.
- 8:38SPEAKER_06: I really like that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_06: And I love when he it like all the exercises he's doing to get her to open up because it's a real false kid thing.
- 8:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah, kids are so afraid to be loud.
- 8:50SPEAKER_05: They think they are, but when they go to actually do it, they're like, uh Well, and especially with her, who was made fun of for and they never say it, like they do talk around it.
- 9:00SPEAKER_05: When she came to school when she was little, she talked funny and she describes it as talking like a deaf person.
- 9:06SPEAKER_05: And she doesn't have good words for it.
- 9:08SPEAKER_05: She just says it was ugly.
- 9:09SPEAKER_05: And you're like, Yeah, she spoke loudly and didn't enunciate because she was the only speaking person in her house.
- 9:15unknown: Yeah.
- 9:16SPEAKER_05: So, like, her her trauma makes sense.
- 9:18SPEAKER_06: Justified.
- 9:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I can totally see kids being mean to her about it.
- 9:22SPEAKER_06: Like, that's so real.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: And that's gonna give you a complex, and it's not like they stopped making fun of her, they just segued to, and now you reek of fish all the time.
- 9:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Because mean girl's gonna mean girl.
- 9:37SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 9:38SPEAKER_06: But yeah, no, I love their relationship, like her and Mr.
- 9:42SPEAKER_06: V.
- 9:43SPEAKER_06: I loved watching her interact with the different members of her family and all the differences between there.
- 9:49SPEAKER_06: I love how funny this movie is.
- 9:51SPEAKER_06: Tinder is an activity we can all do together.
- 9:55SPEAKER_06: Glorious, glorious.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Hey, I've been in a party where we all join Tindered somebody.
- 10:02SPEAKER_06: You play Tinder.
- 10:03SPEAKER_06: It's a game you play.
- 10:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 10:05SPEAKER_06: And they can all see it.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: No, don't swipe on her.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Bring on the next one.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: And I did have the note on one of Mr.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: V's exercises that if you're gonna do any sort of performance seriously, you do have to shed any anxiety over looking silly.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Like, one of my most successful shows involved putting on togas and spraying each other with oversized water guns and making fun of Hercules myths, and I could not have gotten through that show if I was for even one second concerned I might look silly.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: No.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: One point I had performed the moment I wrote, which was run across the stage, waving your toga over your head, screaming, I am a flagpole.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Naturally.
- 10:52SPEAKER_05: Classic.
- 10:53SPEAKER_05: Now, I I will say there were some beats in the movie where I too loved Mr.
- 10:58SPEAKER_05: V.
- 10:58SPEAKER_05: I was like, I'm a little tired of like the music teacher is always like a quirky weirdo in a small town.
- 11:05SPEAKER_05: They saved it by making him very endearing, but I was like, You're walking some lines here, movie.
- 11:10SPEAKER_05: You're falling into some some broad storytelling.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Well, that is Coda at its core, as I touched on the synopsis, is they're not reinventing wheels.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: This is there's a lot of this story that's very boilerplate, but they do have this extra seasoning of the only hearing member of a deaf family.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: But what pushes it is it's incredibly earnest and it has strong performances, so it me might be playing Free Bird, but it's playing the heck out of the guitar solo.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: So you're into it.
- 11:48SPEAKER_06: I mean the final song is Both Sides Now.
- 11:52SPEAKER_06: Like, and it's oh, it gets me.
- 11:55SPEAKER_06: It got me.
- 11:56SPEAKER_06: It got me.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: There's an irony to her singing to her deaf father as she's planning to give up all of her dreams of singing to be their hearing deckhand.
- 12:08SPEAKER_06: Ugh.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: A song whose chorus hinges on You're All That I Need.
- 12:12SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 12:13SPEAKER_06: Honestly, that the scene of the two of them after the concert, when he asks her to sing, and then he puts his hands on her throat.
- 12:22SPEAKER_06: Ugh, no.
- 12:23SPEAKER_06: Nope.
- 12:24SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, also the scene when they're at the concert, and like her parents are trying so hard to be supportive parents.
- 12:31SPEAKER_05: They're like, they're taking social cues, they're getting information from the brother's girlfriend that she's good.
- 12:38SPEAKER_05: They're talking about how pretty she looks.
- 12:40SPEAKER_05: But they're also like, what do you want for dinner?
- 12:42SPEAKER_05: And they're not being rude.
- 12:44SPEAKER_05: Like they're they can't hear anything.
- 12:46SPEAKER_05: They are signing.
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: So like they're not being rude.
- 12:48SPEAKER_05: But then when the dad starts paying attention and we go to the part where all of the sound drops out.
- 12:53SPEAKER_06: It's oh their use of sounds in this movie.
- 12:58SPEAKER_06: So good.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: I it sells me a little on the bittersweet quality that they understand that she's doing very well, and the audience is very into this, but in a way they can't fully connect to.
- 13:10SPEAKER_06: And that's why he asks her to sing it and then touches her throat to feel the vibrations of her throat.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Because that's how he appreciates music, is through the vibrations.
- 13:21SPEAKER_06: That's why he loves gangster rap.
- 13:23SPEAKER_06: He can feel it in his butt.
- 13:25SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 13:26SPEAKER_06: I also can I I just love um moving back to like the near beginning, where it is this beautiful moment of when they're at eating dinner for the first time.
- 13:36SPEAKER_06: We see them eating dinner for the first time.
- 13:38SPEAKER_06: And Ruby's like, you don't know how loud you're being.
- 13:41SPEAKER_06: Because she's just trying to study, and they're like clanging stuff, doors are slamming, like and they're mad that she has her headphones in.
- 13:49SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: It's not like headphones are keeping her from talking to them.
- 13:54SPEAKER_06: It's just so beautiful.
- 13:56SPEAKER_06: It's such a beautiful, like real family moment.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Much like they do not know how much noise they make while having sex.
- 14:03unknown: Oh my god.
- 14:04SPEAKER_06: That was my other favorite parents having like parents being weird about sex moment.
- 14:09SPEAKER_06: That and then describing the condom.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: That isn't where I wrote the note.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Some of these signs do not need translating, but also maybe it was.
- 14:23SPEAKER_05: I mean, that one definitely was not translated.
- 14:25SPEAKER_05: There were no subtitles.
- 14:26SPEAKER_05: We knew.
- 14:27SPEAKER_05: Nope.
- 14:27SPEAKER_05: We knew what was happening.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: I got that one.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: I got that one.
- 14:31SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 14:31SPEAKER_06: Cause I also don't know, like, I don't I don't speak ASL.
- 14:35SPEAKER_06: So I don't know in some of the moments, I don't know if it's like for real or if they're doing it purely for the like cinematic bit or like whatever, or if it's just like they're joking around of like this guy can figure this out.
- 14:47SPEAKER_06: Like, I don't, I don't actually know, but I really enjoyed it.
- 14:50SPEAKER_06: I enjoyed all of those moments.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Some of the signs are not hard to figure out, and some like the siblings insulting each other in very graphic detail were fun new signs to learn.
- 15:02SPEAKER_06: Wat waffle?
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 15:04SPEAKER_06: Perfect.
- 15:05SPEAKER_06: Love it.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Would not have known how to sign that.
- 15:09SPEAKER_05: Nope.
- 15:10SPEAKER_05: Glorious.
- 15:11SPEAKER_05: It is entirely possible they did invent not the movie, but it's entirely possible that the characters invented that sign.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: It's possible.
- 15:21SPEAKER_05: And you know, there's a lot of really good attention to small details in this movie.
- 15:26SPEAKER_05: For instance, there is a scene where Ruby is talking to her mom over breakfast, and it's been set up that her mom was a pageant queen, like she was a model.
- 15:37SPEAKER_05: The one thing she has going for her is like, yeah, all those hearing bitches can hear, but she is gorgeous.
- 15:44SPEAKER_05: And for breakfast, she's having egg whites, fruit, and a piece of toast, and that's it.
- 15:50SPEAKER_05: And you're like, you see it, and you're like, yep, I understand this woman.
- 15:54SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 15:54SPEAKER_06: I also really liked her.
- 15:56SPEAKER_06: I liked how strong her fear was.
- 16:00SPEAKER_06: Like you could really see that she wasn't being mean, she was acting out of fear.
- 16:07SPEAKER_06: Like everything that she was doing to keep to keep Ruby close was because she's like, We can't lose you.
- 16:13SPEAKER_06: I'm so scared that my baby is leaving.
- 16:16SPEAKER_05: But she was never a baby.
- 16:18SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's a heartbreaking line.
- 16:20SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 16:22SPEAKER_06: That's uh That and the the scene between the two of them when she's when Ruby's like, Were you like sad or were you disappointed that I wasn't deaf?
- 16:32SPEAKER_06: And she's like, Yes, yes I was.
- 16:35SPEAKER_06: But then explains why, and you're like, oh my heart.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: It's just that there was always gonna be one little way that they couldn't connect.
- 16:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 16:45SPEAKER_06: Oh, my heart.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: It's very natural that she initially writes off, I want to sing as, yeah, and if I were blind, you'd want to paint.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: You're a teenager, I'm your mother, you're rebelling.
- 16:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: And I do like that she joins the choir because the cute boy has done it.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: And she also dates the cute boy, but he stops mattering to every decision in her life.
- 17:08SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 17:09SPEAKER_05: And she gets into the school and he doesn't.
- 17:12SPEAKER_05: It's true, because he chokes.
- 17:13SPEAKER_05: He chokes.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: I swear to God, Zilla, I thought I remembered the boyfriend then becoming starting to learn sign language so he could work on the fishing boat.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: He does.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah, he does.
- 17:27SPEAKER_06: Because there's it's in it's in the final, like the coda of the movie, because also I love that coda was a double entente for it.
- 17:34SPEAKER_06: I I really enjoyed that aspect.
- 17:37SPEAKER_06: But in that final montage, she's teaching him sign language on the boat because he's the hearing person they legally need to run their ship or their fishing operation.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Because just like every fisherman thought, the government inspector sent on their boats was a goddamn narc.
- 17:56SPEAKER_06: Oh, the biggest narc in the world.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: Which by notes app autocorrected to narcissists, but I still know what I said.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: I mean, she was also kind of a narcissist.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Like, even if you are a goddamn narc, you still could have warned them that the radio was going off or that the Coast Guard was pulling up.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: This is entrapment.
- 18:18SPEAKER_05: So that's the thing.
- 18:19SPEAKER_05: I know they say that she called the Coast Guard.
- 18:21SPEAKER_05: I don't think she did, but she didn't do anything to help.
- 18:24SPEAKER_05: No.
- 18:25SPEAKER_05: Because technically they did have a hearing person on the boat.
- 18:27SPEAKER_05: Like, they had hearing support.
- 18:30SPEAKER_05: She just chose not to act.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: She chose to be of no help whatsoever, even though they were paying for her presence.
- 18:38SPEAKER_06: Yes, there were literally alarms going off, and she's like, let's see how this plays out.
- 18:44SPEAKER_05: And she 100% did it because she felt embarrassed that no one told her they were deaf.
- 18:49SPEAKER_06: Oh, oh yeah.
- 18:51SPEAKER_06: She also couldn't figure it out at any point in time.
- 18:54SPEAKER_06: Like she's been on this boat for hours with them.
- 18:56SPEAKER_06: Never once.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: Never once did she didn't notice at all.
- 19:01SPEAKER_05: Like they're not maybe not talking to her is normal, but they don't speak to each other and they communicate with their hands.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: They must have been signing to each other at some point.
- 19:12SPEAKER_06: I would imagine so.
- 19:13SPEAKER_06: Like once again, they've been on this four hours to do their job.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: I'm sure they have to sign to do their job.
- 19:20unknown: Yes.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: I don't know that they actually could have sued for discrimination about being fined for you can't fit be fisherman if you're deaf.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: I still would have been a great episode of Boston Legal.
- 19:31SPEAKER_05: And I mean, this movie, which we haven't said yet, is a Boston movie.
- 19:36SPEAKER_05: Oh yes.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: Well, it's a Massachusetts movie.
- 19:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's Boston adjacent.
- 19:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: They do think Boston is fancy, but her college dreams are at a music academy in Boston, which might be a real place, but the fact that it's called Berkeley with two E's glorious.
- 19:54SPEAKER_05: No, that that's a real that's a real performing arts school.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: It's just inherently funny to me.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: It's like starting an arts college named Horvard.
- 20:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 20:04SPEAKER_06: No, this movie was simple, but it was good.
- 20:08SPEAKER_06: You knew what you were getting.
- 20:09SPEAKER_06: You knew where it was going to go.
- 20:11SPEAKER_06: There was the will she get in, won't she get in?
- 20:14SPEAKER_06: Like, you know, they do play that.
- 20:16SPEAKER_06: You're not, you're not like 100% sure that she's going to get in because the audition does not go well.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: Not at first.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: And then Mr.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: V botches his accompaniment.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: Botches quotation marks.
- 20:28SPEAKER_05: Oopsies.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: I played the wrong notes.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, for fairness, so I think we should let her take it from the top.
- 20:35SPEAKER_06: And his eyes say, You stupid bitch, sing.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: Sing loud.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: That's all I can help you.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Gotta do it.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: And then she sings while signing, which most colleges would eat up.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: Most colleges would eat up, I am the only hearing child of a deaf family on their application essay.
- 20:54SPEAKER_05: As soon as she does that, she's getting her scholarship.
- 20:56SPEAKER_05: She's getting into the school.
- 20:58SPEAKER_05: It's her save the last dance moment.
- 21:00SPEAKER_06: It is her save the last dance moment.
- 21:02SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 21:03SPEAKER_06: And then they even turn around.
- 21:05SPEAKER_06: The panelists literally turn around and are like, oh, there's people up there.
- 21:08SPEAKER_06: Cool.
- 21:09SPEAKER_06: I know.
- 21:10SPEAKER_06: No, but they're like, wait, that can't be.
- 21:14SPEAKER_06: They're told not to come in.
- 21:15SPEAKER_06: Why are they there?
- 21:16SPEAKER_06: They're just like, ah, yes, that's obviously her deaf family.
- 21:19SPEAKER_06: Great.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Assuming they even can see them in the balcony.
- 21:22SPEAKER_06: Oh, we've read their her application.
- 21:25SPEAKER_06: Guys, discrimination.
- 21:27SPEAKER_06: We need to let her in.
- 21:28SPEAKER_06: Guys, she's getting into this school.
- 21:30SPEAKER_06: We all in agreement?
- 21:31SPEAKER_06: Let's just nod like we know what's happening.
- 21:33SPEAKER_06: Mmm, academic nod.
- 21:36SPEAKER_05: So, full disclosure, I for too long watching this movie, got Amelia Jones confused with Amelia Clark.
- 21:45SPEAKER_05: And I was like, huh, interesting.
- 21:47SPEAKER_05: I'm surprised she still looks so young.
- 21:49SPEAKER_05: Hmm, her accent's really good.
- 21:51SPEAKER_05: Wow, I didn't know she could sing that.
- 21:53SPEAKER_05: I was like, this is a different lady.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Very different lady.
- 21:55SPEAKER_05: Wait a second.
- 21:57SPEAKER_06: I'm watching the wrong Amelia.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: One did eight eight seasons of Game of Thrones.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: One did exactly one episode of Doctor Who.
- 22:05SPEAKER_06: Ah, yes.
- 22:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 22:07SPEAKER_05: So, you know, classic classic distraction.
- 22:11SPEAKER_05: I was like, wow.
- 22:12SPEAKER_05: You know, she really looks different without the blonde wig.
- 22:15SPEAKER_05: She's so young.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's me thinking, wow, Francis McDormand looks weird in this one when it's Francis Fisher.
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: Ah, yes.
- 22:25SPEAKER_05: Ah, yes, Titanics.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Then there was a third Francis in the remake of Bedazzled.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: It wasn't either of them.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, no, wait, that's not the one I always think is Francis McDormand, is it?
- 22:35SPEAKER_06: It was too many Francis's.
- 22:37SPEAKER_06: That's what I said to Keith! I don't have much more for this movie, other than I liked the way they used sound in it.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: Films have gotten clever about that.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Sound of metal that we're only going to talk about in passing was also very clever in how it used sound.
- 22:57SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: And made you really understand the difference between this original hearing and how the cocular implants he got were not the miracle cure he thought.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: There are those who criticize both of those two movies, Coda and Sound of Metal, as why do hearing people keep making movies about how sad it is that deaf people can't hear music?
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: That's like if birds kept making movies about how it's sad that humans can't fly.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: I'm like, we do that! We do that! We do that all the time!
- 23:31SPEAKER_05: We do do that.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: It's one of our favorite things.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Superman! I'm constantly sad I can't fly.
- 23:37SPEAKER_05: And you know what?
- 23:38SPEAKER_05: At least in this movie, and maybe this is faint praise, but at least all of the non-hearing characters were played by deaf actors.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Yes, they they had deaf actors for all three of the family.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: I did like that the brother's arc was no, I don't want my younger sister to coddle me for my life because that's what I need.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: I want the hearing world to carve out a space for me.
- 24:06SPEAKER_06: I I really liked him because he's also, once again, such a 20-year-old man.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:14SPEAKER_06: Like he is the most I'm 20.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: He didn't get in a bar fight because he's deaf.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: He got in a bar fight because he has a temper on him.
- 24:21SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 24:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, the guy shoved him.
- 24:23SPEAKER_06: I love that scene.
- 24:24SPEAKER_06: I love it.
- 24:25SPEAKER_06: And I love that the other guys, like the other fishermen that he's with, they do pull them apart, but there's uh there's a very quiet, it's in the transition moment where they're yelling at that other guy to be like, he's not stupid.
- 24:39SPEAKER_06: Like they're they say stuff like that, and it's all like dialogue that's not super important to where we're going next, but it is said, and I'm like, I really accepted in this community.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: They don't see him as a charity case.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: They authentically invited him out because he's one of them, he's one of the other fishermen.
- 24:59SPEAKER_06: It's also why they listen to the dad when they're at the the town hall and the middle management is like, blah, blah, blah, we're so good at taxing you for fish.
- 25:11SPEAKER_06: Blah, blah, blah.
- 25:11SPEAKER_06: We're giving you fair prices.
- 25:12SPEAKER_06: And he stands up and he's like, no, no, no, no.
- 25:15SPEAKER_06: And then, of course, he goes too far in rallies, but then his business plan is fine.
- 25:19SPEAKER_06: But I love that everybody listens to him.
- 25:22SPEAKER_06: Like they actually are like, Yeah, he's saying good stuff, he's saying what we're all thinking.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Once we get the comedy beat of Ruby having to translate, suck my dick.
- 25:32SPEAKER_06: Oh, it's glorious.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: That was him, not me.
- 25:35SPEAKER_06: Not me.
- 25:36SPEAKER_06: So good.
- 25:37SPEAKER_06: Because she's like 17.
- 25:39SPEAKER_06: She's like, oh no, that's my dad.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Well, translating this is not worse than translating him describing his jockey symptoms to the doctor.
- 25:49SPEAKER_06: Still one of my favorite scenes.
- 25:51SPEAKER_06: It's so good.
- 25:53SPEAKER_06: I mean so good.
- 25:54SPEAKER_06: The man spends a lot of time on a boat.
- 25:56SPEAKER_06: Of course he has jockey.
- 25:58SPEAKER_06: It's the doctor literally says that.
- 26:00SPEAKER_06: He's like, you gotta keep it.
- 26:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Of course things get damp.
- 26:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 26:04SPEAKER_06: You literally are on water.
- 26:06SPEAKER_05: It's hard to be a boat boy.
- 26:08SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 26:09SPEAKER_05: Especially a poor boat boy.
- 26:11SPEAKER_05: That was hard to say.
- 26:13SPEAKER_05: A poor boat boy.
- 26:15SPEAKER_06: Who just wants to have sex all the time.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Because he's married to Marley Matlin.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: And he's only human.
- 26:21SPEAKER_06: There's just so horny for each other.
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: Like to that he looked like a fisherman.
- 26:26SPEAKER_05: Like he looked like the man that he was.
- 26:28SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 26:29SPEAKER_06: Oh, a hundred percent.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: A weird random follow-up for this that I enjoy is that the director of this movie played herself on an episode of Bill Hader's show, Barry.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: In which Barry's love interest gets an acting teacher gig on this like barbarian super queen woman that movie that she's directing.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: Like, oh wow, it's great that you're directing this.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: I love Coda.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: And she's like, Yeah, that's what I want people to think when they watch this movie.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: You made Coda! Now, this was not a darling throughout most of awards season.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: It really did not kick in until it picked up the SAG Award for Best Cast.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Which is often a key precursor because SAG is the greatest voting block within the Academy.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: And I thus spent a lot of time thinking that there were two favorites leading up to this, and then Coda made the short list, and a bunch of people, because Apple lobbied the living hell out of it, and got it through all the festivals.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: And then people started watching the rest of the list and said, Oh, hang on, there were more than two movies this year.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: But I've now begun to suspect that maybe we're all listeners, the three of us are all familiar with local theatrical award shows.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: This is true.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: So I don't have to explain to Aaron and Claire how preferential ballots work.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: Basically, when there is a divided opinion between two potential candidates, and when everybody has different ideas about what their number one choice is, the preferential ballot, the number three choice can sneak ahead of both.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Because it's getting all the like third place points, and that is pushing up against a film that only got half of the first place points and such like.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: So I think maybe there's a little bit of that this year.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Because that said, it did win every single Oscar it was nominated for that being three.
- 28:48SPEAKER_06: Ah, yes.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Picture, supporting actor for Troy Kotzer, and adapted screenplay.
- 28:54SPEAKER_05: I mean, sure.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: Because they all came before the SAGs, it lost the Globe, the BAFTA, and the Critic's Choice.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Time of recording, Rotten Tomatoes for ranks this one.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Number 33.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Under the King's speech and over Return of the King.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: That is the wrong order.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Those three are in the wrong order.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: Flip that, reverse it, and spread them out a little.
- 29:15SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, of course this is right up against the king's speech.
- 29:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: This is a king's speech movie.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: Tomatoes.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: I have it slightly lower, 37 under moonlight, and over ordinary people.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: I feel that's the district this lives in.
- 29:34SPEAKER_06: This is yes, this was an ordinary people movie to me.
- 29:38SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 29:39SPEAKER_05: The less sad, more joy, and much more sex.
- 29:43SPEAKER_06: So much more sex.
- 29:44SPEAKER_05: No suicide.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Yes, that's true.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: And other nominees.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: We were back up to 10, as I said, and we have 10 very different films with one particular thing in common that I don't think gets noticed enough.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Not a single one of them got nominated for best actress.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: That's weird, right?
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:07SPEAKER_05: That is weird.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's weird.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: As I go through my rank ordering, I'm going to note which of them probably could have been, and then maybe, I don't know, circle back to what does it say that there is zero overlap this year between lead actress and best picture?
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: So number 10 is King Richard, a whitewashed hagiography of Venus and Serena Williams' father.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: I get that they like their dad, but they could have just gotten him a gift basket and left me out of it.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: I went from not knowing anything about him to actively loathing him.
- 30:45SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 30:45SPEAKER_05: This was the punch Oscars, too, wasn't it?
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: It was.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: This was the slap Oscars.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: And maybe if they'd only nominated Will Smith for lead actor, which is what you should do with these sorts of biopics, he would have been seated farther back and he would have given it some more thought.
- 31:02SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 31:02SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: This one has no lead actress role to speak of.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: I believe Richard's wife, Mrs.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: Williams, got nominated for supporting actors.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: At number nine, Licorice Pizza, a period hangout comedy in which a teenage would-be entrepreneur tries to date a woman in her twenties, and we're supposed to be okay with it.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: Neither Cooper Hoffman nor Alana Haynes scored an acting nomination.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: And frankly, if you didn't think the two leads warranted an Oscar nomination, what about this movie did you like?
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: It barely has a story.
- 31:36SPEAKER_06: I didn't see it.
- 31:37SPEAKER_06: And I feel like that's okay.
- 31:39SPEAKER_05: Okay, I feel like it's a movie you let people talk about a lot because they want to seem smart like they talk about movies.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Better Paul Thomas Anderson movies, there are better Cooper Hoffman performances, there are better Alana Haym movies.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: And the fact that I have heard Paul Thomas Anderson cast Alana Haym in her role because this was about the time he had a crush on her mom when he was a teenager.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: That's weird.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: That's all very weird.
- 32:11SPEAKER_05: Very weird indeed.
- 32:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I don't like that.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: Number eight is where I rank one of the two favorites leading into Oscar's season.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: Belfast.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: Kenneth Branna's semi-autobiographical tale of growing up in Belfast during the Troubles, while the IRA is demanding his father pick a side.
- 32:29SPEAKER_05: I do remember this movie coming out.
- 32:30SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 32:31SPEAKER_05: I didn't see it, but I do remember the vibes.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: It's fine.
- 32:38unknown: Okay.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: Kenneth Branna got an Oscar for original screenplay.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: He did not win Best Director.
- 32:43unknown: Okay.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: And for lead actress, an argument could definitely be made for uh Catr uh for Katrina Balfie.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Or is it just Balf?
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: I think it might just be Balf.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, number seven, don't look up.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: With Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as astrologers who identify an asteroid about to hit the Earth, and Meryl Streep as the president who's not being helpful.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: As a satire of how hard it is to get the world to care about its imminent destruction and how tech billionaires are the opposite of helpful, some audiences found it heavy-handed, while climate researchers say, no, that is what it feels like.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: Uh Jennifer Lawrence is fine and all, and but uh maybe she didn't need a nomination for this one.
- 33:22SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: Also very restrained DiCaprio.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: That's unusual.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: And a little bit of Timothy Chalamet.
- 33:29SPEAKER_06: Maybe they balanced each other out.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: At number six, Nightmare Alley from Guillermo del Toro with Bradley Cooper as a drifter who learns to be a fake clairvoyant at a carnival, but gets too greedy in the big city.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: Hmm.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: Keith and I tackled it on recovered episode 64, but as far as lead actress goes, you had both Rooney Mara and Kate Blanchett in this thing.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: One of them surely could have been considered.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: At least, yes.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: I know this hinges on Bradley Cooper.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: He is in almost every frame of this movie, but Anthony Hopkins got lead actor for Silence of the Lambs.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: Weirder things have happened.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: We know we know how many minutes of the movie that he was in.
- 34:09SPEAKER_06: Yes, we talked about it.
- 34:11SPEAKER_06: Listen to that if you want to have an accurate number count.
- 34:15SPEAKER_06: Minute count?
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: At number five, our one attempt at a box office hit, Dune.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: Pretty spectacular opening to what may end up a great trilogy, but it suffers a little from being a two and a half hour first act when the second part hadn't been greenlit yet.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: I always said, I really like this movie, but if they don't make the sequel, it'll be one of the worst theatrical experiences I've ever had.
- 34:38SPEAKER_05: I find Dune very confusing.
- 34:40SPEAKER_05: The end.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: Well, there's a lot of space nonsense happening.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: The Dunes don't get acting nominations, but they could, and if they did, I feel Rebecca Ferguson would be near the start of the line as Paula Trade's mother.
- 34:53SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: Lady Jessica.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Coda, I rank number fourth, and Amelia Jones sang beautifully and acted in two languages.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: That feels like it would should have been worth something.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: At number three is the Power of the Dog, the other favorite, with Benedict Cumberbatch as a rancher super devoted to following the ways of his cowboy mentor, who clashes with his brother's anxious new wife but bonds with their bookish son.
- 35:19SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: Hey.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: It actually is pretty good, and some people freaked out at the fact that it turns out Benedict Cumberbatch may have been fond of his cowboy mentor in less conventional ways.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: Kirsten Dunce got a supporting actress nomination for this movie, so it was not in the lead actress conversation.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, number two, Drive My Car from Japan.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: About an acclaimed theater director whose difficult relationship with his wife following the loss of their child comes to a swift and unexpected end, leaving him to find a new way forward with the help of his mandated new driver.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: Was the driver a lead actress or supporting actress?
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: Unclear.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: But we know academy voters are bad at spotting good acting when they have to read subtitles.
- 36:04SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 36:05SPEAKER_05: Which then leads us to the next movie, which also had some subtitles sometimes.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: And number one is where I rank West Side Story from Steven Spielberg, which we all discussed and recover episode 42.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: So all I'll add is that Rachel Zegler gave us everything and only barely got to go to the ceremony as a presenter, but the Oscar went to a Tammy Faye Baker biopic with 67% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: Make that make sense.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, I forgot about that.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, I know.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: She put on a lot of prosthetics.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: And and you you idiots fucking love that, but Yeah.
- 36:46SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, that is what the voting audience likes.
- 36:48SPEAKER_05: Wait, she looked less like herself?
- 36:52SPEAKER_06: Right?
- 36:52SPEAKER_06: She looked like the person she's portraying?
- 36:56SPEAKER_06: Tammy Faye had big eyelashes?
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: Two different women acting in multiple languages and singing like angels.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: And no, that's what we went with.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: That's what we went with.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: Great.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: Perfect.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: Great.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: And I just throwing it out there, is it because you think female-led movies are less Oscar worthy?
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Is that what was happening?
- 37:16SPEAKER_04: Probably.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: If they had a clear lead actress, you didn't think that they were better than King frickin' Richard?
- 37:24SPEAKER_06: We all know that Will Smith is cocky.
- 37:27SPEAKER_06: It's literally his whole thing for forever.
- 37:30SPEAKER_06: Don't celebrate that.
- 37:33SPEAKER_06: He slapped a man! Don't celebrate that.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: If he'd had to walk through more of the theater, someone probably could have stopped him.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: Probably.
- 37:43SPEAKER_05: Or he would have been like, what am I doing?
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he would have had some time to rethink some things if he had to keep walking, and Steven Spielberg gave him a disapproving scowl.
- 37:54SPEAKER_06: Right?
- 37:54SPEAKER_06: It would have also up on stage, it would have moved on.
- 37:59SPEAKER_06: That's true too.
- 38:00SPEAKER_06: It would have just kept going.
- 38:02SPEAKER_06: We would have been at like a presentation.
- 38:04SPEAKER_06: The next award would have been happening by the time he got there.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Chris Rock would have left by then.
- 38:08SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Anyway, so if you ask, do I really think the box office champion 2021 deserved a best picture nomination?
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: I have to say again, the bar wasn't that high.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: But let me tell you about a man.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: No?
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: A Spider-Man.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: Who has no way home.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: When last we left, Peter Parker, the spectacular Spider-Man, Mysterio had one last trick up his sleeve in his assault on Spider-Man and the legacy of Tony Stark.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: Claims Spider-Man intentionally killed him and reveal his identity to the world.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: Now Peter Parker, his girlfriend Michelle, MJ Jones, best pal Ned, and Aunt May find themselves very public and very controversial, as Mysterio's supporters are less ready to forgive his death than law enforcement was.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: Also, Happy Hogan is here.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: As Peter sees his friends' lives collapsing from proximity to Spider-Man, he attempts a Hail Mary, asking Doctor Strange to magically restore his secret identity.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: But Peter's wishy-washiness over how this spell should work makes it go wrong.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: Instead of erasing the public's knowledge of Spider-Man's government name, it creeps into the Spider-Specific Multiverse.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: Shame there's not a quicker way to say that.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: Pulling in foes of other Spider-Man who learned the same secret.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, the Lizard, Electro, the Sandman, all the classic foes from previous Spider movies that Sony isn't desperately hiding under the sofa, and pulled into this Peter's world moments for their final defeats.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: Some of them doomed to be very final.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: Can Peter change these men's fates?
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Cure them of villainy to save their lives when they return home?
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: It may be too much for a Spider-Man.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: It may take Spider Men.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: But only three.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: No cartoons.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: Definitely no pigs.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: Let's not go crazy with ultimate spiders.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: Who wants that?
- 40:05SPEAKER_05: But there's a reference to a cartoon.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: There sure is.
- 40:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, there absolutely is.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: You don't put three this many Spider-Men in one movie and not do the point meme.
- 40:17SPEAKER_06: No, you it it's glorious as well.
- 40:20SPEAKER_06: Also, when you got Willem Dafoe just there, Willem Defoe's gone gonna Willem Defoe.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: Willem Dafoe is one of the three actors in this movie that I feel fall into the category of we did not know how to live up to this casting choice.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: So we haven't used them since, and now screw it, we're just bringing back the actors from the Raimi trilogy.
- 40:46SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 40:47SPEAKER_06: Oh, and Willem Dafoe, Willem Dafoe's so hard all over the place.
- 40:53SPEAKER_05: This movie is everything we wanted our superhero movies to be in the Fallout of Endgame.
- 41:00SPEAKER_05: Like we are just jam-packing every superhero thing into an appropriately sized bag.
- 41:07SPEAKER_05: You know, I was gonna say, like, we're putting what's the phrase you put like 10 pounds of crap in a five-pound bag.
- 41:13SPEAKER_05: No, this is 10 pounds of excellence in a 10-pound bag.
- 41:16SPEAKER_05: It is an appropriate size bag for the movie it is.
- 41:20SPEAKER_06: And it knows what it is.
- 41:22SPEAKER_06: That's the other thing.
- 41:23SPEAKER_06: This movie knows what it's doing.
- 41:25SPEAKER_06: It's not pretending.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: And what it is is a mini end game specifically about the Spider-Man movies.
- 41:32SPEAKER_06: Yes, it is.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: With one notable exception.
- 41:37SPEAKER_06: I okay.
- 41:38SPEAKER_06: I love how silly it is that they're actively putting Captain America's Shield on Lady of Liberty.
- 41:46SPEAKER_06: Think it's great, think it's ridiculous, here for it.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: Utterly believe it is something that they do.
- 41:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 41:53SPEAKER_05: I will also say that I I do like Far From Home, and Jake Gyllenhall is a great Mysterio.
- 42:01SPEAKER_05: He does great stuff with his scam.
- 42:03SPEAKER_05: J.
- 42:04SPEAKER_05: Jonah Jameson's attacks on Spider-Man become less and less realistic in a world where the Avengers exist.
- 42:12SPEAKER_05: In a world where everyone, I guess at this point it's been like the snap happened six years ago.
- 42:18SPEAKER_05: It's been like a year since they got back.
- 42:22SPEAKER_06: Something like Yeah, because Doctor Strange says, I blooped for five years.
- 42:28SPEAKER_05: And then I think it's been about a year since they came back.
- 42:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 42:31SPEAKER_06: So it's six years makes sense.
- 42:33SPEAKER_00: They'd been back for a few months when Peter and MJ and Ned and Flash Thompson, because God forbid he not be around, went on their senior trip to Europe.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: And their junior trip.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: Now it's their senior trip.
- 42:50SPEAKER_05: So you know what?
- 42:51SPEAKER_05: Maybe it hasn't even been a full year since they came back.
- 42:53SPEAKER_05: I'm just saying, J.
- 42:54SPEAKER_05: Joan and Jameson, everyone knows that Spider-Man is an Avenger.
- 42:58SPEAKER_05: You're like, rabid hatred of him makes much less sense in this universe.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: It's so silly.
- 43:03SPEAKER_00: The comics have had to grapple with this too, because Spider-Man was an Avenger for many years, and Jay Joan and Jameson was still determined to be a dick about it.
- 43:12SPEAKER_06: Speaking of Spider-Man being an Avenger, I love when all three Spider-Man can't work together because they don't know how teamwork.
- 43:22SPEAKER_06: And then little Tom Holland's like, wait, guys, I know how to teamwork.
- 43:27SPEAKER_06: I was an Avenger.
- 43:28SPEAKER_06: And the other two are like, yeah.
- 43:32SPEAKER_06: Good job, buddy.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: What is that?
- 43:35SPEAKER_06: Huh?
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: Is it a band?
- 43:37SPEAKER_06: It's gold.
- 43:38SPEAKER_06: It's so good.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, that is the weird thing about the Spider-Verse is hinging on the idea that every world needs a Spider Man, but not every world needs Avengers.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: That's the multiverse, baby.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: That can go in both directions.
- 43:50SPEAKER_05: It goes how it feels.
- 43:52SPEAKER_05: Now, listeners of my Spider Man mini so that I did for an inexplicable reason will know that my least favorite Spider Is Tobey Maguire.
- 44:01SPEAKER_05: However, I love Tobey Maguire as like late 30s cool youth pastor dad Spider-Man.
- 44:09SPEAKER_05: He just he has this like beautiful gentleness and like worldliness in his portrayal of Peter that was not there when he was away, you know, playing Spider-Man as a as like a 20-year-old or however.
- 44:24SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: It's beautiful.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: This version that Peter you feel has been through a lot of the Spider-Man nonsense and come through the other side.
- 44:34SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: And things are okay now, and maybe he never did fully marry Mary Jane, but they're they're figuring it out.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: It's just what he tells Andrew Garfield Spider-Man.
- 44:47SPEAKER_05: So cute.
- 44:48SPEAKER_06: Andrew Garfield Spider-Man is the derpiest Spider-Man in nests.
- 44:52SPEAKER_05: Which is weird, because Andrew Garfield Spider-Man in the Spider-Man in the amazing Spider-Man movies is really cool.
- 44:58SPEAKER_05: Like too cool to be Peter Parker.
- 45:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's always been his problem, is he was too cool, and now he's the slightly awkward one, though I love his interactions with MJ when he comes through the portal.
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: Let's see if you had the tingle.
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: I have the tingle, but not for bread.
- 45:13SPEAKER_06: Stop throwing bread at me.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: You're a deeply distrusting person, and I respect that.
- 45:18SPEAKER_06: I also, okay, let's talk about Ned's Lola and how she just really hates spider webs.
- 45:24SPEAKER_06: Cobwebs, not her thing.
- 45:28SPEAKER_06: She's like, hey, you're up there, and you want to get that cobweb?
- 45:30SPEAKER_06: I need you to clean up these cobwebs you shot at each other.
- 45:33SPEAKER_06: Like, okay, clean that up.
- 45:36SPEAKER_06: Love her.
- 45:36SPEAKER_06: I'm going to bed.
- 45:39SPEAKER_05: Like, he's like, good night, Lola.
- 45:40SPEAKER_05: And they're like, good night, Ned's Lola.
- 45:43SPEAKER_06: Ned's Lola.
- 45:44SPEAKER_06: It's perfect.
- 45:44SPEAKER_06: It's everything you want.
- 45:46SPEAKER_06: I also like how she's just standing to the side watching all of this happen and being like, ugh.
- 45:52SPEAKER_05: Like, not scared.
- 45:53SPEAKER_05: She's like, ugh, no.
- 45:54SPEAKER_05: Portals, lots of Peter Parker's.
- 45:56SPEAKER_05: I told Ned he had magic.
- 45:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 45:59SPEAKER_06: Love her.
- 46:00SPEAKER_06: Think she's a great bit part.
- 46:01SPEAKER_06: Yes, Ned's Lola.
- 46:03SPEAKER_06: Perfect.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 46:06SPEAKER_05: This is it's this is just such a I was gonna say it's such a joyful movie, which it is.
- 46:11SPEAKER_05: Like it's such a celebration of Spider-Man.
- 46:13SPEAKER_05: I also remember being like really depressed after I saw it in theaters because the ending is so so sad.
- 46:21SPEAKER_05: And Aunt May's death scene is so sad.
- 46:24SPEAKER_05: Oh, Aunt May.
- 46:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 46:27SPEAKER_00: Because you think she's pulled through, then she drops with great power, comes great responsibility.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: And this might not make sense to either of you or half our listeners or all ships at sea.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: But it's like when James Bond, in a movie I'm gonna mention later in this wrap-up, says to his love interest, we have all the time in the world.
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh no! No, you don't! That's the most cursed thing a James Bond can say.
- 46:53SPEAKER_06: It is.
- 46:53SPEAKER_06: It is the most cursed thing a James Bond can say.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh, Aunt May's not okay, is she?
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: She's getting Uncle Bend.
- 47:01SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and she's the hot Aunt May.
- 47:03SPEAKER_06: No, Marissa Tomei.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: The hot aunt thing was always weird, but that's neither here nor there.
- 47:10SPEAKER_05: We've talked about it before, though.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: She is extremely age-appropriate to be his aunt.
- 47:15SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes.
- 47:16SPEAKER_06: We have had this discussion prior.
- 47:20SPEAKER_00: And to be dumping John Favreau.
- 47:22SPEAKER_06: Oh god, I love that.
- 47:24SPEAKER_06: And I love how he sleeps in the chair with his CPAP machine.
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: You heard all of that?
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: Not voluntarily.
- 47:34unknown: Perfect.
- 47:36SPEAKER_05: Oh, when he looks at his ring cam and he's like, who are those people?
- 47:44SPEAKER_06: It's so good.
- 47:45SPEAKER_06: I I love that once again, like we were talking about with Coda.
- 47:48SPEAKER_06: I love how this movie, and like, of course, there Tom Holland is is a youthful Spider-Man.
- 47:55SPEAKER_06: But like, I love how everything that he does to make the spell go wrong is because he's a stupid teenager.
- 48:02SPEAKER_06: He's like, wait, no, I thought of something else.
- 48:04SPEAKER_06: Oh no, wait, like it's so great.
- 48:07SPEAKER_06: It's and Tom Holland is so cute and endearing that you're like, oh beautiful baby.
- 48:12SPEAKER_06: And just Benedict Cumberbatch's absolute disdain for this.
- 48:17SPEAKER_06: His exasperation.
- 48:19unknown: It's so good.
- 48:20SPEAKER_06: He's like, it's that like where a small child's like, hey, hey, look at me.
- 48:24SPEAKER_06: Hey, hey, hey, look at me, look at me, look at me over here, hey, look at me.
- 48:28SPEAKER_06: And he's just like, I can see you.
- 48:31SPEAKER_06: Please stop talking.
- 48:32SPEAKER_06: This is very important.
- 48:33SPEAKER_06: And they're like, I understand completely.
- 48:34SPEAKER_00: I am passing a very powerful and a very complicated spell, and I need you to stop wicking out about who else gets to still know.
- 48:44SPEAKER_00: Maybe you just gather the Avengers and tell them all in one group, okay?
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: So good.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: It's so good.
- 48:50SPEAKER_00: Maybe you just grab Ned tomorrow and say, hey, sorry, I made you forget that I'm Spider-Man.
- 48:58SPEAKER_06: Also, the best bit about all of that is after it all goes down, and then he's like, so you called them, right?
- 49:07SPEAKER_06: And he's like, what do you mean?
- 49:08SPEAKER_06: He's like, wait, you didn't do any work?
- 49:12SPEAKER_06: You just impulsively came here?
- 49:15SPEAKER_00: You didn't even try to talk to MIT.
- 49:19SPEAKER_06: You did nothing?
- 49:20SPEAKER_06: He's like, I didn't know I could do stuff.
- 49:22SPEAKER_06: And you're like, it's perfect.
- 49:24SPEAKER_06: This whole thing is perfect.
- 49:27SPEAKER_00: It is November.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: They are not done with admissions yet.
- 49:33SPEAKER_05: And like, as soon as he does talk to them, he for sure was gonna get them into that school.
- 49:37SPEAKER_05: Oh maybe when it's Doc Ok Ram.
- 49:39SPEAKER_05: Or no, it was Goblin.
- 49:40SPEAKER_05: He saved her from Doc Ock.
- 49:42SPEAKER_05: And then Goblin showed up.
- 49:44SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 49:44SPEAKER_00: And then Goblin showed up.
- 49:45SPEAKER_05: But she didn't die, so like he was getting into the school.
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: She was charging off the yell at her driver for abandoning her.
- 49:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 49:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah, fair.
- 49:53SPEAKER_06: But yeah, it's just so good.
- 49:56SPEAKER_06: It's so teenager, and it's everything you want from this movie.
- 49:59SPEAKER_00: You did not see a Halloween ornament suggesting uh take responsibility and have grown-up conversation with people.
- 50:06SPEAKER_00: He saw one that looked like Doctor Strange.
- 50:09SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 50:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:10SPEAKER_00: Probably intentionally, because this is uh a world where Spider-Man is hated by J.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: Jonah Jameson, but uh the Avengers exist and are loved.
- 50:19SPEAKER_00: This is always a thing with Marvel.
- 50:21SPEAKER_00: It's the same problem with so everybody hates and fears mutants, but are cool with everybody else who has superpowers.
- 50:29SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 50:30SPEAKER_05: Even though they are also mutants.
- 50:32SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 50:34SPEAKER_00: Leading to a moment Muncie Parker Monroe told me about in a Marvel comic of somebody being dragged off to a mutant concentration camp screaming, No, I got my powers in an accident! Like the Fantastic Four!
- 50:46SPEAKER_06: The Fantastic Four.
- 50:49SPEAKER_06: Speaking of getting your powers in an accident, I love how when all of the bad guys from the various universes are together and they're talking about how they like got their superpowers and they're like, Oh yeah, I fell into a vat of eels.
- 51:04SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah, I fell into a vat.
- 51:05SPEAKER_06: It's just like falling accidents at work.
- 51:08SPEAKER_06: They all just fall into vats of things.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: He was the nicest guy until he fell into a vat of electric eels.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, that'll do it.
- 51:17SPEAKER_05: It's so funny.
- 51:18SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, or the scene where the Spider-Mans are bonding over who they fought against.
- 51:23SPEAKER_00: That's the best scene of this movie for me.
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: It's just three Spider-Man hanging out at the Statue of Liberty, just swapping stories, and this love the oh yeah, I fought an alien in two big on Earth and his face, big purple guy.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, I want to fight an alien.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: I just fought a Russian guy in a rhino suit.
- 51:44SPEAKER_00: I suck.
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: Okay, can we just stop with the name?
- 51:48SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, it's the self talk.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: Again, you feel like this is a Peter who's been through it and realize sometimes we have to stop doing Jade Jonah Jameis's job for him, okay?
- 52:00SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 52:01SPEAKER_00: Or Andrew Garfield offering to crack Toby Maguire's back.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I got a middle back thing too.
- 52:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so good.
- 52:09SPEAKER_06: From all the swinging.
- 52:11SPEAKER_00: Tom Holland Peter is still too young to have back issues, but his time will come.
- 52:15SPEAKER_06: It will.
- 52:16SPEAKER_06: I also I love when Goblin finally meets his demise, but he has stabbed Toby Maguire's Spider-Man, and then that scene that Andrew Garfield's just hold him and holding him up, and they're like, You go, Tom Holland.
- 52:30SPEAKER_06: You go.
- 52:32SPEAKER_06: Talk to your friends, save the world.
- 52:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 52:35SPEAKER_06: And then it's just that cutaway scene, and he's like, You're in a lot of pain, aren't you?
- 52:40SPEAKER_06: And Toby Maguire's like, Yep, yep, yep, so much.
- 52:44SPEAKER_06: It's so good.
- 52:45SPEAKER_06: It's just such a good scene.
- 52:48SPEAKER_05: Okay, and it's such a Spider-Man moment that Tom Holland Spider-Man really wants to kill Goblin.
- 52:54SPEAKER_05: Of course he does, because it's not Norman Osbourne's fault, but Goblin's in there, and this is all Goblin's fault.
- 53:01SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 53:02SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 53:03SPEAKER_05: But then then Toby McGuire talks him down, and then you think he stabbed him, but of course he didn't stab him.
- 53:09SPEAKER_05: He stabbed him with the cure.
- 53:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 53:12SPEAKER_06: We're not being revolutionary here, but it's good.
- 53:16SPEAKER_00: No, it is good.
- 53:17SPEAKER_06: This movie literally is doing everything we want it to do.
- 53:21SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 53:22SPEAKER_00: Even bringing back the most memeed line from the first movie of I could help.
- 53:28SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm something of a scientist myself.
- 53:33SPEAKER_05: They're all science boys.
- 53:35SPEAKER_05: Although, is Tom Hollins I no, I guess he goes to Academics of Cathlon, so yes, he is also a science boy.
- 53:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and he does figure out the circles where he's like, Math, math solves all problems.
- 53:48SPEAKER_06: And you're like, You know what's better than sorcery?
- 53:51SPEAKER_06: Math! So good.
- 53:54unknown: So good.
- 53:55SPEAKER_06: Also, the scene when they're in the lab doing all their like each one has their own specific like science task that they're doing, and then Ned starts talking to them and they all answer and then are debating which one he's talking to.
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: Peter! Yeah, yeah.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, uh no, Peter Parker.
- 54:13SPEAKER_00: We're all Peter Parker.
- 54:14SPEAKER_00: That's not helping.
- 54:16SPEAKER_06: It's so good.
- 54:17SPEAKER_06: It's so good.
- 54:18SPEAKER_00: Flap top screen.
- 54:20SPEAKER_05: It's just this movie is so cute.
- 54:22SPEAKER_05: It is.
- 54:23SPEAKER_05: And it's so timely.
- 54:25SPEAKER_05: So for those in the know, the recording lands at such a time that Brand New Day has not come out yet.
- 54:32SPEAKER_05: You're gonna listen to this after Brand New Day has come out, and you're probably screaming at us because you've probably watched Brand New Day and you know things.
- 54:39SPEAKER_05: We don't know those things yet, but I'm so excited to see four years older Peter.
- 54:44SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 54:45SPEAKER_05: After the ending of this.
- 54:46SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 54:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, the one thing I most want is this, of course, ends with Peter saying, let's go back to the original spell and make everybody forget Peter Parker, and we don't have time to modify it.
- 54:58SPEAKER_00: It's kind of now or never situation.
- 55:00SPEAKER_00: And MJ and Ned are back.
- 55:03SPEAKER_00: So I kind of need that to be resolved in this movie.
- 55:07SPEAKER_00: I need them to either get past the memory wipe or be written out completely.
- 55:12SPEAKER_00: And I don't know which is gonna happen, but since I'm seeing this movie in 41 hours.
- 55:17SPEAKER_00: Editing Dam! Was I let down?
- 55:21SPEAKER_00: Just just tell us that.
- 55:22SPEAKER_00: Just tell us that much.
- 55:23SPEAKER_00: Don't tell me who Sadie Singh played.
- 55:26SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you for asking, Past Dan.
- 55:28SPEAKER_00: I have seen it twice by now, and kinda want to see a third, and suffice to say, it's not a hundred percent resolved.
- 55:36SPEAKER_00: But I am satisfied with the amount of progress.
- 55:39SPEAKER_00: Thank you, editing Dan.
- 55:40SPEAKER_00: You're always a true friend.
- 55:42SPEAKER_00: Now, what I also don't know is if Brand New Day is gonna hold to what I have identified as the four types of MCU characters who appear in a Spider-Man movie.
- 55:51SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 55:52SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 55:52unknown: Okay.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: So we have number one, major character who could could or has led their own project in a key supporting role.
- 56:00SPEAKER_00: Tony Stark, Nick Fury, Doctor Strange.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: Number two, a member of that character supporting cast.
- 56:08SPEAKER_00: Pepper Potts, Maria Hill, Wong.
- 56:11SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 56:12SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 56:13SPEAKER_00: Number three, random bonus cameo for funsies.
- 56:16SPEAKER_00: Daredevil!
- 56:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah!
- 56:18SPEAKER_00: Matt Murdoch being Peter's lawyer.
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: Which happened about a week after I said on Recovered that I felt we were a year away from announcing the recast Daredevil because they were never gonna put Marvel Netflix in the movies.
- 56:31SPEAKER_00: And then before that episode had a chance to air, Matt Murdoch's in a Spider-Man movie and Wilson Fisk is on Hawkeye.
- 56:39SPEAKER_00: Kevin Feige loves to screw with me.
- 56:44SPEAKER_00: And of course, in the second one, the revelation that Nick Fury had been Talos the Scrawl from Captain Marvel the whole time.
- 56:52SPEAKER_00: And number four, John Favreau.
- 56:56SPEAKER_00: Me.
- 56:56SPEAKER_06: Gotta have John Favreau in there.
- 56:58SPEAKER_05: I'm sure he will be in this upcoming one.
- 57:01SPEAKER_00: I hope so.
- 57:02SPEAKER_00: He could.
- 57:03SPEAKER_00: He was in Dead Bull and Wolverine.
- 57:04SPEAKER_00: He still shows up for these.
- 57:06SPEAKER_06: Right?
- 57:06SPEAKER_05: He's there.
- 57:07SPEAKER_06: He's like, hey, I'm here.
- 57:08SPEAKER_06: He's like Adam Sandler.
- 57:10SPEAKER_06: He just wants to have fun.
- 57:11unknown: Right?
- 57:11SPEAKER_06: He just wants to have fun with his friends.
- 57:13SPEAKER_06: Doesn't want to do anything heavy.
- 57:15SPEAKER_06: He just wants to be there.
- 57:16SPEAKER_06: Say one deeply meaningful line.
- 57:19SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 57:20SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 57:21SPEAKER_00: Uh my other two I didn't take a lot of notes because I did take a lot of notes on Endgame, and how much did that help me?
- 57:29SPEAKER_00: I do have a couple other rants that may not make sense.
- 57:33SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 57:33SPEAKER_00: Sh g give them to us.
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 57:36SPEAKER_00: So the people that arrest Peter Parker for maybe having killed Mysterio are the Department of Damage Control.
- 57:43SPEAKER_00: And I hate that.
- 57:45SPEAKER_00: And I'll tell you why.
- 57:47SPEAKER_00: In the 90s, Damage Control was a series of minis, mini-series from I think legendary writer Dwayne McDuffie.
- 57:57SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 57:58SPEAKER_00: I'll either edit that out or be right.
- 58:00SPEAKER_00: I'll find out later.
- 58:03SPEAKER_00: About a construction firm that was specifically created by Tony Stark and Wilson Fisk to clean up after superhero fights.
- 58:12SPEAKER_00: So Lex Luthor tears a rift through downtown Metropolis, damage control are the ones rebuilding every skyscraper.
- 58:20SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 58:21SPEAKER_00: To use a recent cinematic example.
- 58:24SPEAKER_00: The fact that this movie built on what happened in Homecoming and canonized MCU damage control as Marvel Ice is unforgivable to me.
- 58:36SPEAKER_00: Because we go from this, we go to Ms.
- 58:38SPEAKER_00: Marvel, where they're the most racist superhero cops imaginable, to the point where they supplant the actual antagonists as the main villains of the season.
- 58:47SPEAKER_00: And apparently there's something similar in Wonder Man, which I have not seen.
- 58:50SPEAKER_00: And I guess Spider-Man has to work with them in brand new day.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: But there are so many other thing organizations in Marvel that can be doing that.
- 58:59SPEAKER_00: You could have brought back SHIELD, even if it means throwing a bone to the agents of shield fandom who have not to this day given up hope that Melinda May is going to be in Secret War.
- 59:10SPEAKER_05: They got a lot of hope.
- 59:11SPEAKER_05: They got a lot of these movies do weird things, so maybe their hope is warranted.
- 59:17SPEAKER_05: Who knows?
- 59:17SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 59:18SPEAKER_00: Who knows?
- 59:19SPEAKER_00: You think I'm gonna go on Al Gore's internet and tell you that no agent of shield character is going to be in a Marvel movie?
- 59:25SPEAKER_00: No.
- 59:25SPEAKER_00: No! That will make it happen.
- 59:27SPEAKER_00: I said we'd never see an actor from Inhumans in a Marvel movie.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: And what happened?
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: Black Boltz back in Doctor Strange the Multiverse of Madness.
- 59:37SPEAKER_00: I said the little the six-year-old son of T'Challa is not being set up as the next Black Panther, not without a 20-year time jump he isn't.
- 59:45SPEAKER_00: And Ryan Kugler said, bet, and that's happened.
- 59:52SPEAKER_00: So I'm not saying anything can't happen in these movies.
- 59:56SPEAKER_00: They do what they feel.
- 59:59SPEAKER_00: Rant number two is the ongoing, I assume, debate are Zendiah and Kirsten Dunst playing the same character.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: Is MJ that MJ?
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_06: This movie said no.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_06: I was gonna say, not according to this one.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: This movie actually tried to have it both ways, if you catch one specific moment.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_00: Ooh, which moment?
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_00: They reveal that this MJ, Michelle Jones, has a stepfather, so her full name, according to Damage Control, is Michelle Jones Watson.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_00: So her name is still MJ Watson.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_00: Now, okay.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_00: The obvious counter-argument is that Michelle Jones and Mary Jane Watson are demonstrably different names, suggesting they're demonstrably different people.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_00: And this is added to the fact that his best friend is, as far as I am aware, having not read Spider-Man comics since the book, this movie takes a couple inspirational cues from One More Day, the worst Spider-Man story ever written, in which he sells his marriage to the devil to keep a septigenarian alive for a little while longer.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_05: Naturally, as you do.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, this all makes sense.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_00: None of my rants are about that.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: I feel like I've covered this elsewhere.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_00: But so yeah, you as far as I know, Ned is an original character, and he's so heavily bottled off Miles Morales' best friend that the Spider-Verse movies couldn't really use him.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: The issue with the obviously, if her name is Michelle Jones and not Mary Jane, they are different people.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: The problem is that not everyone who argues that is racist, but all the racists are on that side.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_05: Oh.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_05: Uh see, I felt like in this movie, when she got all threatening-y, being like, I'm gonna touch the button on the box if you don't come back, I'm gonna hit the box, the villains are all like, ooh, backbone! That's new.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_05: I can't believe Peter's dating someone with backbone.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_00: So I thought the villains That would be new for Norman and Octavius, yes.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_05: So I thought that they very clearly were like not the same.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah, because to them, MJ's just girl who falls.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but people can be written differently.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_05: I guess they could be saying, oh, what a different take on MJ.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_05: True.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_00: Now, I don't have a strong opinion either way.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_00: I do think that different names implies different people.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_00: But I also think that if they went to the trouble in this movie of saying that their full name is Michelle Jones Watson, even if she doesn't go by that, once they've added the Watson, they do not intend to have a more comics accurate.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_00: We only we're not racist, we just care about redhead erasure, sure, jam, Mary Jane in this series.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: So I am pretty confident that no Sadie Sink does not play Mary Jane Watson.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_00: Editing Dan.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_00: Am I right?
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_00: Just tell us that.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_00: You know it, July Dan.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_00: Thanks, Bal.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_00: Sorry I talked so long in this episode.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_06: I'm so excited about I'm so excited to hear this back with your edits.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_06: You know what?
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_05: By the time I hear it, I will have also seen the movie, so I will be shouting the answers at my car radio as I drive.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_06: Like, I know it! Dan, you're either right or wrong.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_06: The only options at this point in time, unless we get a curveball.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_06: I mean, it is Marvel.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_00: That's all my rants.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_00: I just do have the random note that Wong was made Sorcerer Supreme instead of Doctor Strange, because Benedict Wong is a lot more available to guest star and stuff.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, 100%.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_00: If you want a Sorcerer Supreme who's going to be able to drop by Shang-Chi and She-Hulk and whatnot, Benedict Wong's got the time.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_06: He is the more available Benedict.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_00: Also, I think it fuels Doctor Strange's arc in Multiverse of Madness, which I feel is an underrated Marvel movie.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_00: That his need to be the smartest man in the room is what dooms multiple universes.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_05: I he he does have that, Steven.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_05: I'll call you Steven, and I don't care if you think it's weird.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_05: Those are great lines as well.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_00: I just did find that exchange cute.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_00: I think we're past, sir.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_00: Steven.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_00: Steven?
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_00: That felt weird, but I'll allow it.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_06: It's so good.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_00: And I love the tellingness of his little trip up of everyone who knows and loves you, we won't they won't be able to remember you.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_05: He loves the annoying little scamp.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_05: He's so endearing.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_05: He's so endearing.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_05: He's so respectful.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_05: He's so sweet.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_00: He's just a little guy.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_00: He's just a little guy.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_00: He always just liked being part of the team.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_05: We also can talk about how amazed they are that the webs come out of his actual wrists.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_06: Did they come out of it?
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_06: We can't do that! It's so good.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_06: I have to make this in a lab.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_05: Then when Tom Holland tries to be like, we're not making fun of you, we're just like generally impressed and curious.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_05: It's so good.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_05: We can't do that.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_00: That's impressive, and I have questions.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_06: Sheepishly, he asks if it comes out of other places, it's perfect.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_00: It's the great question of like, um, um so people eventually that that's not where the web comes out of a spider.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_06: Yep, it's glorious.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_06: It's so good.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_00: And I do think this movie has the best spider sense sequence of all time.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_05: When he figures out?
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_00: When he figures out that Norman has flipped, and it's just the Spider Sense kicks in, he's like, no, something is wrong.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_00: Something in this room is wrong and dangerous.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_00: And oh.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's you, isn't it?
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_06: And of course it is.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_06: It's Willem Defoe.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_00: It's Willem Dafoe is the Green Goblin.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know how Jamie Foxx got billed over him in the credits.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_00: My gosh, right?
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's insane.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_06: It's wild.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a screen time thing, because I think we do spend more a little bit more time with Electro.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, maybe.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_05: I mean, Electro is the most active villain.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_00: I think so, yeah.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_05: Green Goblin is just kind of like taking advantage of things that come upon him.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_05: You know, just generally reveling in chaos, as is his way.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_05: But Electro is like plotting.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_00: Also, you don't need to spend quite as much time and effort making Jamie Foxx look younger than you do Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_05: Which is why they get Doc Ock out of there real fast.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_05: They heal him and then he is off-screen.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah, they're like, you're good now.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_06: Go over there.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_00: When he comes back for a last second save that isn't quite good enough because Norman's still here, and Green Goblin is the apex villain.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_00: And the only reason we haven't seen more of him since uh 2001, other than his two like haunt-hairy appearances in the sequels, is because Willem Defoe is just so hard to follow.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_00: They tried Dane De Hahn, didn't work.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_00: They didn't even manage to follow James Franco.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_00: That bar was much lower.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_05: It was.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_05: It really, really was.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_05: I also love how Sandman's story still continues to be child has illness.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_05: He wants child.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_06: It's his only thing.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_06: He's like, I just want to go home to my sick kid.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_06: And you're like, you're going.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_06: And he's like, uh.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_06: Like, no, no, no, you're going.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_06: He's like, ah.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_06: Wait, what?
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_05: He'll get to go back as a man, not a monster.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_05: And especially for Sandman, if he shows up looking like a man past Toby Maguire is not going to kill him.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_05: Very true.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_00: Past Tony McGuire didn't kill him.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_00: They came to terms.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_00: And he just drifted away.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_06: He did.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_06: He did just drift away into the air.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_06: But now he can't drift.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_00: He can't drift.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_00: That's why he's he's so much friendlier when they run into each other for the first time.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_00: He's actually trying to help.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_00: It's just that, you know, if things are not going exactly his way, he is gonna flip a little.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_05: Just a little.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_05: Because he just wants to go home.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_05: It's the only the only motivation that character has ever been given.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_06: And you know what?
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_06: He does a really good job with that.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_06: We believe his one thing, as we've seen before, is go home to sick kid.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_06: Kid has illness.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_06: Nebulous illness.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_06: He gotta get there.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_00: Also, when he does get cured, their options are limited because Thomas Hayden Church was never on set.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_05: Really?
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_00: He provided the voice, but he had a schedule conflict and was never present.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_00: That's why he's never out of sand form until the cure is administered.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_00: At which point, it's just archival footage.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_05: Fascinating.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_05: That's really interesting.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_05: I'm so glad that we brought this up so I can learn that.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_00: Me too.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_00: I think it might be the same with Reese something as the lizard.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_06: Oh.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_00: Because he's not out of lizard form until the cure is administered, so it could be very much the same with him.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_05: He couldn't shift.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_05: Like I thought part of his tragedy was that the man with one arm became a lizard.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_05: As he tried to get his arm back.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_00: In the movie, I think so, and one of the things that I do mock about the first Amazing Spider-Man is that he went from I must take the serum and become a lizard.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_00: It's the only way to stop Oscorp from turning a entire retirement home into lizards as an experiment to actually now that I think about it, I am going to turn literally all of Manhattan into lizards.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_00: Now that I'm here, this is actually pretty awesome.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_06: I mean, if you follow the conspiracy theories, everybody in power is just a lizard alien.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_05: So really thinks he's pretty cool looking.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_06: I do like the moment of, I didn't know he could talk.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_06: That is good.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_06: Also, tree.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_06: Is this a tree like a kind of thing?
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_00: Scientists to become a tree.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_00: It's just a tree, man.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_06: Just a tree, man.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_00: Just a tree.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_06: Perfect.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_06: It's so good.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_06: I also really enjoyed, I will say, that they called back to that because they didn't have to.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_06: They didn't have to call our attention back to the tree just being there.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_06: But they did and I appreciated it.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_06: Eat?
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_00: Ned saying, and by the way, I'll never become a super villain and try to kill you after finding out that that's how all the Harry's Osborne went.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_02: Oh no! Oh no!
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_00: Which some people thought was foreshadowing that he's gonna become the hobgoblin.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_00: And I'm again never gonna say never to anything lest Kevin Feike immediately green light that idea.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_05: Uh, has Kevin Feike ever met that actor?
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_05: That actor does not have the ability to villain in his body.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_05: No, they can have him to do one thing, and that's make portals and not know how to close them.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah, he is best friend to the max.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_06: And also, if he's a super villain, Lola will be so mad and she's gonna smack him upside the head.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_00: She is just gonna smack him.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah, she's gonna smack the villain right out of him.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think he does have alopecia now, which leans him more into villain casting territory.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_06: He is kind of Lex Lutheranit.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_06: But wouldn't it be great if we could have a good bald man?
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_00: He might have had it this entire time.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_00: He's just good at wigs.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_05: No one's gonna wigs, Dan.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_05: We know this.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_05: No one has good wigs.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_00: They must be out there somewhere.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_06: One day we'll see them.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_06: One day.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_00: If you're Canada's own Sasha, host of Casually Comics, feel free to email us at AVA at writing therapyproductions.com and s it remind us how good you are at Wigs.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_05: I will say Aunt May died way earlier in the movie than I remembered.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_05: When we got to her death scene, like the attack on the apartment building was happening, and I was like, there must be another apartment building attack later.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_05: Because that can't possibly happen now.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_00: No, I was amazed that we still had an entire hour left by the time the alternate beaters showed up.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_06: Well, even the the big fight, like what it's a climactic fight on the statue, when it starts, there's still 45 minutes of movie.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_06: So we know they gotta fight, resolve, and then fix the time-space continuum stuff.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: Fight has a lot of levels to it.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_05: And Bond.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_06: Yes, there has to be spider bonding.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_05: They love each other, or Andrew Garfield loves them.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_05: It's so cute.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_05: Regardless, adorable.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_00: And despite what fan theories are gonna fan theory, this might be the only time we get all three of them together, so let's enjoy it.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_00: So cute.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_00: I know you want all of them to be in Secret War.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_00: I wanted another David Tennant, Matt Smith, Doctor Who team up.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_00: Sometimes we live with what we got.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_05: Also, Toby McGuire quit acting because it was hard and stressful for him.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_05: So be grateful for what you got.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_06: Toby Maguire's also like in his early 50s right now.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_06: If he wants to take a break, he can take a break.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_00: Can absolutely take a break.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_06: Tom Holland's 30.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_06: He's just a young buck.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_00: That's one of my parting thoughts, I will say, that we are a podcast of dedicated to the best in award-nominated cinema and the highest-grossing films of any given year.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_00: So obviously, we have nothing to say about the Sony Pictures universe of uh Marvel characters or spumped.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_00: But it is maddening to me that the same studio that created Into and Across the Spider-Verse also made Morbius.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_00: That's the same studio.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_00: And then Madam Webb.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_00: It was like, well, obviously that went bombed.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_00: Nobody knows or cares who D-List Spider-Man's supporting character Madam Webb is.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_00: If only there'd been some other property about a multiverse connected by a web of spider people where you could have soft launched this character.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_06: Hmm.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_06: If only.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_06: Nope, can't think of it.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_00: Well, elsewhere in our top ten, domestically, there were a lot of movies intended for 2020, but released in 2021 because the world was now beginning to reopen.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_00: So hey, it's worth a shot.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_00: But they have been delayed this long because they were not made by Christopher Nolan and were not trying to gang rush back into theaters because God forbid you watch it on your television.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_02: No.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_00: With a pause button and subtitles in your stupid ass tenant sound design.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_06: That didn't happen.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_06: Nope, they're still happening.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_00: I was legit afraid every movie theater I love would be a gold's gem by the time the pandemic ended.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_06: There was there was that fear.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_00: So at number two, a man must reconnect with his estranged sister when their crime lord father, part of a secret organization that's been quietly manipulating the world for centuries, is ready to end the world to see his wife again in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_00: I could have done without the big CG Dragon fight at the end, but we should have gotten two sequels by now.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, I guessed, I was gonna guess that this was the Kingsman, one of the sequels.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_00: It was not a Kingsman sequel.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_03: I love that so much.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_03: Based on the description, I was like, ooh, the Kingsman.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_03: Ah, yes.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_03: Anyway, continue.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_00: Number three, Eddie Brock and his carnivorous goo monster life partner are challenged by Marvel's second most popular goo monster in Venom Let There Be Carnage.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_05: Tom Hardy in a mask.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_05: Doing a voice.
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_05: He's there.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_00: He loves that.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_00: Number four.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_00: In the aftermath of Captain America's Civil War, Natasha Romanoff must deal with ghosts from her black ops past.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_00: That being a secret organization that's been quietly manipulating the world, and the more sinister threat of same-day theatrical streaming release strategies in Black Widow, which introduced Florence Pugh as Elena Balova, which is indeed incredibly important.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_05: Black Widow has a movie?
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_00: Sorry, obviously.
- 1:16:34SPEAKER_00: And number five, the fast family faces reunions, both good and bad, as Han turns out to be less dead than they thought, but Dom's Estrange Brother is on a rampage in F9.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_06: It's everything you want it to be.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_05: I know those people's names.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_05: Other than Dom.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_06: It's okay.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_06: Just let it wash over you like all these movies.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_00: Of course they never saw this attack coming.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_00: It's John Cena.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_06: It is John Cena.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_06: It's perfect.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_06: He's not a pickle.
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_06: Inside joke, nobody understands.
- 1:17:07SPEAKER_00: At number six.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_00: The Earth is an egg on the verge of hatching.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_00: The only thing stopping it is a secret organization that's been quietly manipulating the world for centuries in Eternals.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_00: Wow, Marvel has so many of those.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_00: But none of them are the kingsmen.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_03: Nope.
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_03: Nope.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_00: At number seven, the cute animals who do pop songs learn a lesson in the big city or something like that.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_00: In Sing 2.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_06: That sounds right.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_00: Don't know what happens in the Sing movies, and I choose not to learn.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_06: The first one's Eurovision.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's cute, yeah.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_00: The first one is Eurovision.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_06: I don't know what the second one is, but the first one's Eurovision.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_00: Bono's in the second one.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_06: Ah.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_00: And number eight.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_00: Five years after the events of Spectre, James Bond must return to action one last time to stop a madman with a customizable bioweapon in order to save not just the world, but the two people who mean the most to him in no time to die.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_06: Mm-hmm.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_06: Mm-hmm.
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_06: It's great.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_00: One of the longest Bond movies, which caused some people to comment, he had so much time to die.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_06: I mean he did, but also his James Bond.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_06: And there's gonna be another one.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_06: So relax yourselves.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_00: And no wonder they still haven't figured out what to do next.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_00: At number nine, a family continues to work their way through an invasion of blind aliens in a quiet place part two.
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_00: I liked it.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen it.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_00: I really like the first one, but it was not invested enough in the world to come back for either of the follow-ups.
- 1:18:41SPEAKER_06: The second one I like.
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_06: It's yeah.
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_06: It's got it's it's it's what you might imagine.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_06: I enjoyed it.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, I've liked post-apocalyptic movies with Killian Murphy in the past.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_06: Mm-hmm.
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_00: And probably future.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_06: I mean, he's there.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_06: He really likes doing things in 28 X amount of times.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_00: And at number 10, a single mother must move her kids from New York to her strange father's farmhouse, where her daughter discovers her family legacy, is protecting the world from Gozer the Gozarian while dusting off ghosts like true ghost dusters and Ghostbusters afterlife.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_05: So, like, I'm not saying anything revolutionary, but you can't make money in this year if you don't have IP.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, yeah, a lot of IP was kind of ruling things.
- 1:19:31SPEAKER_00: Or internationally being an Asian movie.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_00: Because while Hollywood was struggling to come back, China was doing better.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_00: But Aaron's point is well made.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_00: It was the IP flicks that were drawing people in.
- 1:19:45SPEAKER_00: People were still very trepidatious of going back to theaters.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_00: And the fact that the return of Toby and Andrew was the worst kept secret in Hollywood, probably a little bit intentionally, was really driving things.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_00: People had to be in the theaters to see it before it was all over the internet.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_05: I would hazard a guess that they meant to keep it a secret, and then what happened in the world happened in the world, and they're like, nope, we can't! Let's get those leaks out there.
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_06: Come see our movie, please, before movie theaters die forever.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying when they want to keep something a secret, they can pull it off because Cookie Monster was doing a video with Sadie Sink at the premiere of Brand New Day, leaning into the fact that no one knows who she's playing.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_05: That's adorable.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_00: It's like me have question everyone want to know.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_00: Oh boy.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_00: What is favorite cookie?
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_00: Oh, that that's the not not a different question?
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_00: Is there a different question people asked?
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_00: No, it's fine.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_00: It's fine.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_00: Let's do this.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_00: And then apparently some guy who worked on the soundtrack got to do a speech before the movie and he gave it away, but I wasn't there, so I don't know what he said.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_05: Come on, guy.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_05: That's why Guy shouldn't be in charge of things.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_06: Everybody named Guy is like, oh.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_00: I'm looking at the world, I'm seeing her point.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_00: Spider-Man held the international title at number two, The Battle at Lake Shangjin, a war drama film from China.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_00: Number three, Hi Mom.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_00: A Chinese fantasy about a woman who ends up back in time and tries to befriend her mother to have the relationship she never could as her daughter.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_00: At number four, the British also turn out for their hometown heroes, giving a bump to no time to die.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_06: Makes sense, yes.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_00: F9 at number five, the fast movies travel.
- 1:21:34SPEAKER_00: They always do.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_00: Number six, the popular crime busting antics of Tang Ren and King Feng continue in Detective Chinatown 3.
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_00: Ooh.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_00: Venom Let There Be Carnage number seven.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_00: Number eight, a Hollywood movie that still got some strong Asian support.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_00: Because if you can't be from China, pander to them.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_00: When the world's protector seems to be turning on humanity, our one hope against him might be the greatest of the great apes.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_00: But the real evil kaiju was capitalism all along in Godzilla vs.
- 1:22:08SPEAKER_00: Kong.
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 1:22:10SPEAKER_00: Check out Recovered Episode 70 for that.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_00: And Shang-Chi at number nine, Sing 2, rounding out at number 10.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_00: I I I see what you're saying.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:20SPEAKER_00: As we saw last episode and will continue to see, the pandemic really brought Asian movies to Asian audiences, and that's not gonna stop.
- 1:22:30SPEAKER_00: Think we have learned?
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_00: Hollywood cannot make a two billion movie without China, but China can make one without America.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_00: Makes sense to me.
- 1:22:39SPEAKER_05: Makes sense to me.
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_00: Now, as awkward as it is to talk about alcoholic pairings for movies about high school students, I did go with a uh nice glass of prosecco.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_00: I think it would pair decently with both fresh fish and toasting 20 years of spider movies.
- 1:22:57SPEAKER_00: If you wanted champagne for the toast, Sony, you would have invited the Spider-Verse to the party.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_06: I just went with um red wine because that is Ruby's mom's favorite drink.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_00: Well, I that said that in judgmental term.
- 1:23:13SPEAKER_00: If she were that basic, she'd prefer Chardonnay.
- 1:23:17unknown: Yes.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_05: Or white Zinfandel.
- 1:23:20SPEAKER_05: Ooh.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_05: And I grabbed an American beer, the type that you can just point at in a bar so you don't have to speak to the bartender.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_06: When you say, I'd like a beer, please, and that's what you get.
- 1:23:33SPEAKER_00: In Bruges, if not all of Belgium, there is a specific beer.
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_00: It is considered the Bud Light of Belgium.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_00: And if you just like raise a pinky at the bartender, they're like, oh, you want that one.
- 1:23:45SPEAKER_05: It's like ordering a Burt Reynolds shot.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_05: You just put your finger under your nose like a mustache, and then you have a sh shot.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_00: I can't do that.
- 1:23:52SPEAKER_00: People might think I'm being Hitler.
- 1:23:55SPEAKER_06: Solid beer.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_06: Yes, yes.
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_06: It can go either way.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_00: Terms of Academy versus audience, I have spent, I forgot to bring this up.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_00: I had been wanting to re-watch parts of this movie, especially anything with Toby and Andrew, but I thought, no, no, I can't re-watch it yet.
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_00: Or it'll be less special when I re-watch it for the podcast.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_00: And we are going to be talking about this.
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_00: In four years.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_05: So did you did you let yourself watch it?
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_00: No, this is the second time.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_00: This is the second time I've seen this movie.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_00: I never got back to it.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_00: I kept thinking, oh, but I'm going to eventually.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_00: Whereas I didn't think about re-watching Coda at all.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_00: So I don't stand by every nice thing I said about it, but I do go audience this week.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_05: Oh, same, same.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_05: I mean, I I made a Spider-Man episode for reasons.
- 1:24:50SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna be the outlier and I'm gonna go Coda, because it's it's my movie.
- 1:24:54SPEAKER_06: I loved everything about it.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_06: Although I do really love Spider-Man.
- 1:25:00SPEAKER_06: It it was so cute.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_06: This specific Spider-Man.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_06: I do like other Spider-Man, but this one's so cute.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_00: I get that Reddit Bros liked Power of the Dog more, but Coda's still really good.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_00: If you if you stop thinking about what it wasn't and pay attention to what it is, you will see the solid performances and earnestness, as friend of the podcast Olaf Rockney said, when he wrote rewatched this movie because I did, will carry you pretty far.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_00: Now next time, we have another James Cameron-related cinematic duel, but it's not ex-husband versus ex-wife.
- 1:25:37SPEAKER_00: It's one filmmaking duo who believes in the power of practical filmmaking.
