- Lucas: Hei, velkommen tilbake. Dette er Learn Norwegian with Fexingo, episode 96. Luna: Hei hei! I'm ready for more Norwegian. Lucas: Glad to hear it. Today we're going to learn the most important verb in Norwegian. Luna: Ooh, big claim. What is it? Lucas: The verb 'å være' – to be. Luna: Ah, like in English 'I am', 'you are'. Lucas: Exactly. And in Norwegian, the base form is 'å være'. Say it with me: å være. Luna: Å være. Lucas: Perfect. Now, the present tense: 'jeg er' – I am. Luna: Jeg er. Lucas: Right. 'Du er' – you are. Say it. Luna: Du er. Lucas: Good. 'Han er' – he is. 'Hun er' – she is. Luna: Han er, hun er. Lucas: Let's use them. 'Jeg er Lucas.' – I am Lucas. Can you say that for yourself? Luna: Jeg er Luna. Lucas: Perfect. Now, 'Du er Luna.' That means 'You are Luna.' So if I point to you, I say 'Du er Luna.' Luna: Du er Luna. Got it. Lucas: And 'Han er Lucas' if I point to myself, but that's weird because I'm talking about myself in third person. Luna: That is weird. But I get it: Han er Lucas, hun er Luna. Lucas: Yes. We also have 'det er' – it is. For example, 'Det er en bok.' – It is a book. Luna: Det er en bok. So 'det er' for things. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice a quick scene. Imagine I ask you: 'Hvem er du?' – Who are you? Luna: Jeg er Luna. Lucas: And I say: 'Hvem er jeg?' – Who am I? Luna: Du er Lucas. Lucas: There you go. Now you try a full sentence: 'Jeg er en student.' – I am a student. Luna: Jeg er en student. Lucas: Nice. 'Han er en lærer.' – He is a teacher. Luna: Han er en lærer. Lucas: Let's do a quick drill. I'll say the English, you say the Norwegian. Luna: Okay! Lucas: I am happy. Luna: Jeg er glad. Lucas: You are nice. Luna: Du er snill. Lucas: She is tall. Luna: Hun er høy. Lucas: Perfect. Now, let me ask you: How do you say 'It is cold'? Luna: Det er kaldt. Lucas: Exactly. So you've already used 'det er' naturally. Luna: I guess I have. This verb is everywhere. Lucas: It really is. And that's why learning 'å være' is so important. It's the foundation for so many sentences. Luna: I'm feeling good about this. Jeg er glad. Lucas: And I'm happy that you're happy. Now, let's practice a little dialogue. I'll be a friend, you be you. I say: Hei, hvem er du? Luna: Jeg er Luna. Hvem er du? Lucas: Jeg er Lucas. Hyggelig å møte deg. Luna: Hyggelig å møte deg. So that's 'nice to meet you'? Lucas: Yes, but we'll save that for another episode. For now, focus on 'jeg er', 'du er', 'han er', 'hun er', 'det er'. Luna: Right. I'll practice: Jeg er, du er, han er, hun er, det er. Lucas: Great. Now, you know, if Fexingo has been helping you learn Norwegian like this, and you want to support us, you can buy us a coffee at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, that would help us keep making these episodes ad-free. Lucas: Exactly. So thanks to anyone who does that. Now, back to 'å være'. Let's do one more exercise. Luna: Sure! I'm ready. Lucas: I'll give you a subject in English, and you say the Norwegian pronoun plus 'er'. Luna: Okay. Lucas: I. Luna: Jeg er. Lucas: You. Luna: Du er. Lucas: He. Luna: Han er. Lucas: She. Luna: Hun er. Lucas: It. Luna: Det er. Lucas: Perfect. You've got it. Now, let's put it together in a mini conversation. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: Imagine you meet someone new. You say: Hei, jeg er Luna. Luna: Hei, jeg er Luna. Lucas: They say: Hei, jeg er Ola. And you ask: Hvem er du? – Oh wait, you already know who they are. Let's say: Er du Ola? Luna: Er du Ola? That's a question: Are you Ola? Lucas: Exactly. In Norwegian, you just switch the word order: 'Du er' becomes 'Er du'. So 'Er du Ola?' Luna: Er du Ola? Yes, I am. Lucas: And they reply: Ja, jeg er Ola. So you see 'er' in both statements and questions. Luna: Ja, jeg er Ola. That's easy. Lucas: So today we learned: å være, jeg er, du er, han er, hun er, det er. Let's review the list once more. Luna: Sure. Å være, jeg er, du er, han er, hun er, det er. Lucas: Perfect. Practice these, and you'll be able to say so much in Norwegian. Luna: I will. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: Takk for i dag, Luna. And thanks to you, listener. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Luna: Ha det bra!
