- 1:55I'm one of the chaplains here at Sing Sing. Oh, yes, sure,
- 1:57what can I do for you? Finally, nothing for me, mister
- 1:59Dollar, but possibly for someone else. Michael Kairn, one of our inmates,
- 2:02asked me to contact you. Michael, can you remember him? He
- 2:06wasn't sure you would, old time grifter and con man who got tied up
- 2:09with an insurance fraud a few years ago. Blonde fellow. Yes, Michael
- 2:13wants to see you, mister Dollar. Would you possibly find the time to
- 2:15come up here? Oh? I don't know, father, Is this something
- 2:19important? It is to Michael? Oh? Well, look, I'll be
- 2:22in New York sometime next month. Maybe I'll get a chance to stop off.
- 2:25Well, couldn't you possibly make it sooner? What's the rush? She's
- 2:29going to be there quite a while, isn't he not very long? I'm
- 2:31afraid Michael is dying all right, father, you can expect me. Welcome
- 2:45to Johnny Doller, beginning tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the
- 2:49Transcribed Adventures of the Band with the Action Packed Expense Account Alberica's fabulous freelance insurance
- 2:54investigator, Yours truly, Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted by a special investigator
- 3:07Johnny Dollar to the Allied Casualty and Insurance Company Limited, Markham Building, Hartford,
- 3:13Connecticut. Attention at barth Controller's office. This is an accounting of expenditures
- 3:17during my investigation of the McCormick matter. Though you didn't authorize the investigation,
- 3:23and I'm sure that once the facts are out, you will honor the following
- 3:27expense account Item one seven dollars and ninety five cents train fare and incidentals Hartford
- 3:30to Austin in, New York. I was admitted inside the prison and greeted
- 3:37by Father Tech. He's a tall, mild looking man, a jesuit.
- 3:40I believe he had a pass already for me, and he led me straight
- 3:44to the prison infirmary. Just him here. Michael will certainly appreciate your coming,
- 3:52mister Dollar. I hope it satisfies whatever's on his mind. I can't
- 3:55imagine what it would be. You know, it was my investigation testimony to
- 4:00put him in here. Father he told me all about that, and I'm
- 4:01sure it has nothing to do with why he wants to see you. See
- 4:05as a long started to go about two years ago and there's just been no
- 4:09way to arrest the condition. Does he know how close he is is?
- 4:12And he's not afraid to die? Here? We are mist a dollar?
- 4:17Oh what? Hardly the same man? I remember father, and he's had
- 4:23it bad lately, lost a great deal of week. Yeah, let's sleep,
- 4:26yes, Michael, Michael, Oh, y, father, I brought
- 4:32someone to see you. What do you say? I am Mike. Oh,
- 4:38thanks for coming, Thanks Johnny, Thank father Taggart here. He's an
- 4:43all right guy, Johnny, he's just like you. I always said you
- 4:46were the best insurance cup. Yeah, what's all this? I'm kicking out?
- 4:53Johnny? Didn't you tell him? Father? He told me Mike in
- 4:57case I didn't live right, I'll be back in the a while. Thanks
- 5:00for you. Take it easy, Mike. A loudly place to die in
- 5:05prison. But I ain't got my choice thanks to you. Well, it's
- 5:10just that you picked to do a couple of things that the law and some
- 5:13insurance companies didn't agree with. Mike. I know whold none of that against
- 5:16you. A guy does what he does. I don't know how to tell
- 5:20you this. Maybe I better get the doctor. You shouldn't be talking so
- 5:26much. Oh no, wait, Johnny, Look you know I'm no cry
- 5:30baby. When the doctor gave me the news, I got to thinking I
- 5:33educated to blow out. You understand. I know, Mike. I know.
- 5:38It's just I had a wife once, a long time ago, when
- 5:42I started out. Yeah, then I just kind of drifted out of her
- 5:46picture one day he got a cough drop baby. Yeah, I guess it
- 5:53wouldn't ture what I got anyhow. I got to do something for before I
- 5:59well, Jhnny, I lay here and I get myself an idea. Yeah,
- 6:03Mike, Johnny, if there was some really easy money lying around,
- 6:08would you pick it up for me? Depends on how clean it is,
- 6:11Mike, and where it's lying. Yeah, sure, sure, but it's
- 6:14clean, all right. You can find that out for yourself, all right.
- 6:18Listen. Till they moved me down here in the infirmary, I roomed
- 6:23upstairs with Jojo Penny. You know him. No, I don't believe I
- 6:27do. And Carthy from the Hay stage. You've got his sabbatical three weeks
- 6:31ago, Parold what I've been in the camp with a lot of guys but
- 6:36Jojo Penny takes the cake. He's got a little five year trick to put
- 6:42in, and it's Jojo. He does it like a vacation, you know,
- 6:46a real picnic. Every time he gets a chance out in the yard,
- 6:49he's taken son. So we don't get the color she yeah, yeah,
- 6:56when they push him in with me, I noticed this, and I
- 6:59get the going over in my head. Yeah. Why does a guy whistle
- 7:02in a cell block, Johnny? Why is he treating it like a rest
- 7:05home short term? He's got something outside waiting Eh. That' see it,
- 7:11baby, He's got something waiting for him outside, something that he knows he'll
- 7:15keep safe. Money. Thought you said this was legitimate, Mike, it
- 7:20is it is now. Wait. I didn't ask Jojo anything about this.
- 7:25No, I figured out myself. Then A couple of times I hear him
- 7:29yelling in his sleep, mccarmick. Ye else, mccarmick makes sense now,
- 7:33Johnny, not the big heist, Johnny the big heist. A few years
- 7:39ago, a rich guy named mccarmy got on Long Island. There's someplace like
- 7:43that gets turned over for a hundred thousand dollars with the jewelry. You remember,
- 7:47vaguely. Yeah, well, I'm thinking that Jojo Panny was in on
- 7:50it somewhere else. Why would he be singing and whorstling and cheering himself around
- 7:56this fly trap for five years? Else? Why would he be talking about
- 8:00that when he's sleeping. Mccarmick, mccarmick, Maybe you've got something, Mike.
- 8:05I know I got something, Johnny, and you got something too it.
- 8:11Mike, I'm alright, I'm alright. Don't you see the insurance company
- 8:16must have a reward out. They always do a reward. But Mike,
- 8:20well, I tell you joe Joey is the ginzo that done the job,
- 8:24or he knows who did it. So you look into it, work on
- 8:28it. Maybe turn up the stuff and get the reward. Good clean coin.
- 8:31Yeah yeah, send half of it to my old lady. Will you
- 8:39keep the rest yourself? Who'd you say? The god? Apostolia said?
- 8:50Interviewed gym my cairn done three hours later. The last living thing he did
- 8:58was wink at me. Expense account item two fourteen dollars and twenty cents.
- 9:11Train fair and incidentals austening to New York. I arrived at two fifteen,
- 9:16dropped my bag off at the New Western and went over to the Metropolitan Police
- 9:20station to find out what I could about the McCormick matter. It was all
- 9:22pretty much as all Mike Altoli, a Julian McCormick living on Long Island had
- 9:26suffered one hundred thousand dollars jewelry burglary in nineteen fifty one. Twelve suspects had
- 9:31been arrested and released. The case was marked open and unsolved. Allied Casualty
- 9:37had been the insurance company involved. This is the Adjustment office, Frank Porter
- 9:43speaking. My name's Johnny Doller. Mister Porter, I'm an investigator. Oh,
- 9:46I think I've heard of you, mister Dolly. Yeah, I wonder
- 9:50if you could give me a little information about acclaim your company handled in nineteen
- 9:54fifty one a man named Julian McCormick out on Long Island. Jeep will Long
- 9:58TI. I'm a goal what about the McCormick. I might have some information
- 10:03on it. I don't know yet. It's a long chance. I'm at
- 10:05police headquarters and I notice you investigated for the insurance company. I'd like to
- 10:09talk to you, sure, but it's kind of late to day tomorrow,
- 10:13Okay, Well, you can tell me this right now? Is there any
- 10:15reward being offered? Chief Whisk kind of folds my sales that we're asking about
- 10:20a reward. You sound like you can make full recovery and want to make
- 10:24sure that you will be paid for it. Well, I said it was
- 10:24just a long shot. How about the reward, Well, that's pretty standard
- 10:28with us on cases like this. Yeah, I think it's seventy five hundred
- 10:31something like that. I'm not sure where he's staying New Weston. Well,
- 10:35I'll look it up, get the exact figure and call you there. How'll
- 10:37that be fine? Thanks, that'll be fine. Before I left the police
- 10:48station, I turned out a mug on Jojo Penny. He was a big,
- 10:50broad shoulder lad with plenty of beef and a list of petty convictions,
- 10:54four of them in New York State. The last one was for carrying concealed
- 10:58weapons. His parole status was good, though, and the parole officer furnished
- 11:03me with his home address, the Allen Hotel. Right, stay a week
- 11:05a month, one hundred and fifteenth Street, open, it's open. Come
- 11:15on in HI looking for Joe pant Yes, sir, that's me. My
- 11:20name's Johnny Doller. Yeah, I just came down from Austining. I saw
- 11:26a friend of yours up there, Joe. Who was that Mike Cairn?
- 11:33I was Mike. Not so good? He died today. It's too bad.
- 11:37He was a nice old coot. Kind of liked him. Said if
- 11:41I ever saw you to say hello. Huh he didn't give you my address?
- 11:46No, I got it from the parole office. Use some kind of
- 11:50cup. Now I work for an insurance company. Oh why you drink?
- 11:56Sure? Why not expensive cold? I had him three four dollars even for
- 12:07drinks. I wanted to look at Joe, Joe Panny, and talk to
- 12:11him and figure out how I was going to go about getting information from him.
- 12:15And the more I saw and the more he talked, the more I
- 12:16wondered if whatever he might have said about the mccarmick case in his sleep happened
- 12:20to some other mccarmick. After all, a man with a long list of
- 12:24petty thieveries is hardly ever involved in a slick, big time safe cracking job
- 12:28that takes another kind of talent. And when I was sure that Jojo didn't
- 12:33have so, I'd just been taking it easy and looking around, I figure
- 12:39I can get a job pushing a truck or maybe a cab. If I'm
- 12:43lucky, I got to get something to do for all. Office is kind
- 12:46of hard nosed about things like that. Yeah, drink up one more?
- 12:54Oh no, no thanks, please, my limit like to keep in shake.
- 12:58Sure, say you got anything to do? Nothing special? Why I
- 13:03thought I might go out to Long Island later on tonight sailo to an old
- 13:07friend of mine. If you haven't got anything to do, come on along.
- 13:11You're okay, bub sure? Why not this friend of yours he's an
- 13:20ex con too, No, he never did any time, Just a friend.
- 13:24I want to sailos all rich fellow. His name's Julian McCormick. You're
- 13:33very big with a hellos around here today? Aren't you anything wrong? Joe?
- 13:37You probably are? Why do you say that? Nothing? Have I
- 13:41known anyone named McCormick. I knew a guy named Arnie McCormick once back in
- 13:45Salt Lake City. We were pals for a while. Oh yeah, Arnie
- 13:50was killed in the war. He'd got himself drafted in the infantry. Maybe
- 13:54he's related to my friend Julian McCormick out on Long Island. He wasn't related
- 13:58to anybody not that bird. I'm leaving. I want to get up early
- 14:03tomorrow. Why not come with me? Thanks for the drinks. He drifted
- 14:11off down the street and left me standing there. And one thing I was
- 14:16sure of. He had the name McCormick on his mind. Whether it was
- 14:20the right mccomick or the right case, I didn't know anyhow, he was
- 14:24my one big lead. So I was back at his hotel early the next
- 14:26morning and talking to the disc click any did you say room took Tanya?
- 14:31That's right, I moost what you left bag and baggage last night? Well
- 14:37where did he go? What's his forwarding address? He didn't say, just
- 14:39left. Johnny Deller, Frank Porter Allied Casualty. Yes, mister Porter,
- 15:01call me Frank. Johnny, you phoned yesterday about the mccarmick matter. I
- 15:05got all the stuff about the case on my desk here, and we're still
- 15:09offering seventy five hundred dollars reward. Thanks for confirming it, Frank. Sure
- 15:13you got a tip for something. An old con named Mike Karen gave me
- 15:16a tip about a guy named Jojoe Penny. I'm working on it, need
- 15:20any help, I'm not yet I might Jojo pulled out of his hotel last
- 15:24night, bag and baggage. What are you going to do? I'm on
- 15:26my way to Long Island. I want to talk to McCormick himself. Oh,
- 15:31Johnny, yeah, let me give you a tip for your own good.
- 15:35Don't bother Julian McCormick unless you've really got something. Could be dangerous.
- 15:41I think I've got something. Expense accounts submitted by a special investigator, Johnny
- 15:45Dollar, to the Allied Casualty An Insurance Company Limited, Markham Building, Hartford,
- 15:50Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the
- 15:54McCormick man. Item four ten dollars deposit on the car I run it to
- 16:02drive out to Junior McCormick's home on Long Island, and, judging by the
- 16:04looks of the place, a safe full of a hundred thousand dollars worth of
- 16:07jewelry would feel right at home. It was a mansion and the rugs and
- 16:11the floor were an inch thick. I'm sorry I've kept you waiting, Missus.
- 16:18McCormick and I were packing for a little trip to Europe. Sit down
- 16:22please, thanks, Going to be gone along oh. We usually spend several
- 16:26months a year over there for a bit late this year. Our reservations are
- 16:29for next week. I envy you, mister McCormick, dollar the name,
- 16:32that's right. Forgive me, but I don't seem to recall having heard of
- 16:34you before. It's okay, we never met. I'm an insurance investigator.
- 16:38Oh really, Am I being investigated or something? No, No, nothing
- 16:44like that. It's just that I might have a lead on that jewelry that
- 16:47was taken from your home a few years ago. Well that's wonderful. You
- 16:51must tell me about it and I make your drink. No thanks, you're
- 16:53from the insurance company I like casual game. No, No, I'm not.
- 16:57I'm an independent investigator. Oh why should anyone feel it necessary to call
- 17:02in a Oh oh, I see there's a reward, of course, that's
- 17:08right, yes, bo. But now tell me how can I help you?
- 17:15Well, I'm just checking a few things, mister McCormick. I haven't
- 17:18even gone over it with a man who handled a case for Allied. Possibly
- 17:22I have run into something that'll help. I don't know. I'd like you
- 17:26to tell me what happened. My safe was opened and my jewelry taken.
- 17:30I mean how it happened. Well, it was right in this very room.
- 17:33That's the wall safe there. Missus McCormick and I had just returned from
- 17:38our honeymoon five years ago. It was yeah. All I know is that
- 17:42when I stepped into the library here that morning, the safe was open and
- 17:45everything was gone. Whoever did it was extremely clever and quiet, I must
- 17:49say. Was the safe crack? No? No, no, it was
- 17:52just opened. Someone figured the combination or something like that. Well who knew
- 17:56the combination at the time. Only myself, mister Dallan is sure of that.
- 18:02Why, of course I see. I reported it to the police right
- 18:06away here on Long Island, and some men from New York City were here
- 18:08too, and your insurance company. I reported it to my insurance company immediately.
- 18:14They had a man on the scene as soon as a police. Mister
- 18:17Porter, Frank Porter, Yes, you know him. I've talked to him
- 18:19on the phone. I haven't met him. A very nice chap. He
- 18:22worked very hard trying to recover it. I'm sure he did. Did they
- 18:26have an adjuster his? How much did you collect it? If you don't
- 18:30mind, not much? What do you mean, Well, it was unfortunate.
- 18:34By keeping that much Julie in a small house safe. It seems I
- 18:37violated the clause in the contract. It should have been kept in a safety
- 18:41deposit box or some such. Consequently, the matter went into litigation. I'm
- 18:45afraid the court found me at fault. I collected only a part of the
- 18:51insured value twenty thousand dollars, so you can see I'd certainly welcome a recovery.
- 18:56Sure the Julie was in the family a good many years. I had
- 19:02given it to my wife and I well, a man hates to lose things
- 19:07he loves. Yes, I understand, was missus McCormick here the morning it
- 19:12happened here. I'd like to talk to her. She's terribly busy, but
- 19:18if you think it's sufficiently important, I'll call her. No, never mind,
- 19:22I'm curious, mister Dalla, this case has been closed a long time.
- 19:26At least no one's contacted me or asked me for any information about it
- 19:32for at least four years. What opened it? A man named Might can
- 19:37Well, who's he? An all convict of an aussening who shared a cell
- 19:41for a while with a man named Joe Penny Can died yesterday. But before
- 19:47he died, he told me he thought Penny had something to do with it.
- 19:49He'd heard him mention your name. Well, it seems to me you
- 19:53should talk with this Joe Penny. I did, and I will some more
- 19:56as soon as I locate him again. Right now he's missing. I'm sorry.
- 20:00Well, thanks for the time, mister McCormick. You let me know
- 20:03if you'll learn anything. Sure do you honestly think you can recover that jewelry?
- 20:10But then he luck at all that would be wonderful. Wonderful you think
- 20:14so? Why? Yes, of course, missus McCormick might be glad to
- 20:18know about it too. You said it was her jewelry. I don't know
- 20:26why I said that to him, just a sudden impulse. But he wasn't
- 20:30smiling when he walked me to the door, shook my hand and patted me
- 20:33on the shoulder. I had a funny feeling that mister Julian McCormick was scared
- 20:38like a rabbit of me. I drove back to the city, had lunch
- 20:44at Walgreens, and dropped into Allied Casualties New York office to pick up the
- 20:47folder on reward information. I met Frank Porter and liked him right away.
- 20:51A big, redheaded man in a tweet suit. Johnny, it makes me
- 20:55feel older than ever doing this. How come? Well, I weighed fifteen
- 20:57pounds less when this case June. Ah, here we are. These are
- 21:04pictures of stuff. Huh. Now that one they called Tierra del Quago some
- 21:11necklace. Yeah, And this one was called Imperial in the royal family of
- 21:15Rush at one time. And this is the other one. Placid and beautiful
- 21:21stuff. Oh you can say that again. That all, Well, that's
- 21:23about the size of a Johnny one hundred thousand dollars gone. Yeah, help
- 21:29me sure. It's nice to know what I'm trying to find. Well,
- 21:32I hope you have better luck than I did. Yeah. Say, who
- 21:34was the police officer on the case, Uh, Martin duels Martin not a
- 21:40central Yeah. We ran down every lead we could find, big and small.
- 21:44The final said you made twelve aruss you know, something like that,
- 21:47But not one of them panned out. I had to let them all go.
- 21:48Martin requested pickups on every big time jewelry man in the country. No,
- 21:52I don't think one of them was overlooked. Well, no, Johnny,
- 21:56somebody just simply walked in that house, opened the safe as needed,
- 21:57you please, and walk right out with all of this very slick job.
- 22:02Had to be an experienced man. It might have been a first job for
- 22:04someone just starting in. They got lucky. Yeah, we thought of that,
- 22:07and we didn't think much of it after a while. Je, where
- 22:10is Johnny? You know nobody could be that lucky case the house knew exactly
- 22:12where the safe was, know what was in it, get in, open
- 22:17it up, and get out without anybody servants, the mccarmicks or any of
- 22:21their friends even seeing. Yeah, well that wasn't even the hardest part.
- 22:23You see, not one scrap of this stuff has ever turned up anywhere anywhere.
- 22:27Now, what did whoever took it do with it? Did he break
- 22:30it down, sell it overseas? What? Not a trace of it?
- 22:33Imagine that? You know what? I think? I think the guy who
- 22:37swiped all this stuff still hasn't. I think he's sitting around waiting for it
- 22:41to cool off. Could be, but it's never going to cool off.
- 22:42Johnny. There isn't a city in this country or across the ocean that isn't
- 22:47on the lookout for these pieces. I suppose now sooner or later, hot
- 22:49boy or a lucky boy, well, whoever he is, will make a
- 22:52move. Meantime we just wait unless, of course, so you've got something
- 22:56for us to look into. Not yet, Frank, Yeah, Well when
- 22:59you have to be right with you all the way, Cord good. How
- 23:02about a drink? Take a range chick. Okay, but remember we got
- 23:04a whole floor full of lawyers upstairs. They can get up warrants, rich
- 23:07seizure orders, anything you might want. You just let me know when you
- 23:11get somewhere and we'll go to work. I'll do that, Frank. I
- 23:19left Frank Porter and went back over to the Pole office to see what had
- 23:22developed with Joe Panny. After all, if he didn't report in, he'd
- 23:26be in violation of his parole, be in real trouble. But nothing had
- 23:30developed. He hadn't put in a change of address. Nothing. So I
- 23:33went back to my hotel and had some dinner. Then I shaved, changed
- 23:37my clothes, expense account item five dollars and a half cab fair. I
- 23:44garage my Reddit car, went back to Central Police Station and pulled out the
- 23:47mug on Joe Panny once more, hoping to get a line on some friends
- 23:49or relatives of his where he might be staying up to Lynn. Things had
- 23:53been going pretty routine. Then a clerk from the parole officers stepped across the
- 23:57hall. Hi, mister Dollar. Hi, I thought it was you I
- 24:02saw in here. I wasn't sure. How's it calling? Fine? Fine
- 24:04dark your friend Jojoe Penny? Yet not today? Why it seemed awful anxious
- 24:10to talk to him as all I am. Why don't you go see him?
- 24:12We're playing games. I've been trying to find out where he is all
- 24:15day and I already told you you watch your I give it to you half
- 24:18an hour ago in your phone when who phone? Sure? About half an
- 24:22hour ago? Look Joe Panny calling and told me his address? Yeah?
- 24:26I no, sooner sat down a phone and you call in and said,
- 24:29this is Johnny Dollar. If you heard from Joe Panny. Why, I
- 24:32said, yeah, and I told you his address? It's all what address
- 24:34to just say? The Allan Hotel on a one hundred and fifteenth Street,
- 24:37same place he was before. It's the matter, you forget. It took
- 24:45me ten minutes to get from the police station over to the Allen Hotel.
- 24:48Ten minutes of wondering who'd put in that call and use my name. I
- 24:52went up the stairs two at a time, up to the second floor,
- 24:55and right at the top of the landing, I bumped into a darkhaired woman
- 24:57wearing a silver fernie. Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't see all right,
- 25:02you heard no, not at all. Please let me go past.
- 25:04I'm in a hurry. Yeah, i'd be in a hurry too. What
- 25:07do you mean gun? You should carry it on the inside of your purse.
- 25:10Oh, I suppose I take it. Give it to me, all
- 25:14right, take it. She'd given it to me all right, right on
- 25:22the side of the head. It didn't knock me out, but it didn't
- 25:23knock me off balance. So I tangled up at the hall table, and
- 25:26that gave up plenty of time to scurry down the stairs while I got out
- 25:30of the furniture and back on my feet. By the time I got down
- 25:33the stairs and out on the street, she was nowhere in sight. No
- 25:37one yelled I'm shot. No one did anything but what they were already doing.
- 25:49A right, where were you just now? You weren't here at the
- 25:52front desk. He got back eating my dinner. White. Nothing you happen
- 25:56to see that woman who just ran through here. No tall, dark haired
- 26:00woman about thirty wore a mixed stole me. Yeah, oh your kidding in
- 26:03this Jake, He's still looking for Joe Penny. He lives here again,
- 26:08doesn't he? Yeah? Have you seen him? Where is he out?
- 26:15I sat down myself and waited. Half an hour later, when the clerk
- 26:19went back to finish his dinner, I stepped over to the desk and borrowed
- 26:22his pass key and went back up the stairs to room two ten. Wow,
- 26:38I didn't need the pass key, and I didn't need to doubt the
- 26:41clerk. Joe Penny wasn't there, but all of his things were. The
- 26:45curtains were drawn and the windows closed. Every drawer had been pulled out of
- 26:49every dresser. The mattress on the bed was slipped from top to bottom,
- 26:53and the rug had been ripped and turned over. Expense account item six one
- 27:06dollar, one drink for me. I left Joe Joe's room, went to
- 27:11the nearest bar, sat out and had a drink. A scared victim,
- 27:15a missing con, a dark haired woman wearing a mink and a gun,
- 27:19and other things. Right then and there, I decided that Mike Cann's tip
- 27:25had been pretty good at that. Now here's our star Bob Bailey to tell
- 27:45you about tomorrow's episode. Thanks Tomorrow, A slight case of mayhem when the
- 27:49right guy turns up in the wrong place, Johnnis, Won't you yours Truly?

- 28:08by John Dawson. The entire production is under the direction of Jack Johnstone.

- 29:17for the third part of that one. Definitely off to a really strong start.
- 29:23Well, we now do turn to listener comments and feedback, and we
- 29:29start off with Bill, who says Johnny Dowler is my favorite. Patrick commented,
- 29:36and with agreement from Bobby as well, John Allan grew on me.
- 29:40He was a very good Johnny Doller. Why did he leave the show at
- 29:44that time? What happened to his career after the show ended? Thanks Adam,
- 29:48Well, thanks Patrick, and this is probably something I should have addressed.
- 29:52A couple of Fridays ago, but better late than never. What happened
- 29:56to him after yours? Truly, Johnny Doller or I guess we'll start with
- 30:04why did he leave? With most of these radio programs, it's usually not
- 30:11the actor's decision. In this case, CBS at this point was kind of
- 30:18pulling back from its from its a lot of its crime drama programs, and
- 30:29the shows that had running in the nineteen fifty four season that was looking at
- 30:36were things like Mister Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons and Mister and Missus North
- 30:41with a strong appeal to a female audience, so it was more of that.
- 30:47In terms of John Lunn's career, he continued to act for several years,
- 30:53he didn't for whatever reason he didn't. He never got into television acting,
- 30:59but he did continue to appear in movies, last one being in nineteen
- 31:06sixty two, and then he officially retired in nineteen sixty three to focus on
- 31:12running on running his local local businesses. Before he retired, he did a
- 31:22lot of radio as well, and for those of you have the premium side,
- 31:26we've played some episodes of suspense he did up into the late nineteen fifties,
- 31:34but in overall. He actually, even though his performance career was somewhat
- 31:40cut short. He basically retired at the age of fifty two. He had
- 31:45a pretty good life, married to the same woman for nearly fifty years.
- 31:52He lived at the rob old age of eighty one, and apparently enjoyed a
- 31:57success after Hollywood, though a pretty good outcome, particularly with the allinges of
- 32:06Hollywood and the era and even just the amount of smoking. He did very
- 32:12well to live that long and actually was the last Yours Truly Johnny Dollars star
- 32:17to pass away, nearly thirty years after the show went off the air.
- 32:22All right, well, that will do it for today. Join us tomorrow
- 32:28for the adventures of Frank Race, and then be sure and listen to Doors
