- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to the show. Luna: Hey Lucas, happy to be here. So last time we went to the wet market, right? Lucas: We did. And I was thinking, before we dive into today's little gem, if you've been finding these episodes useful, the reason we can keep making them ad-free is because of listener support. Luna: Yeah, if Fexingo has helped you make real progress with your Cantonese, maybe think about buying us a coffee. Lucas: Exactly. That's buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Every bit keeps the show going. Luna: And we really appreciate it. Now, back to the market. I remember we learned a few key phrases. Lucas: Right. Let's do a quick review. The first one was for buying fish. How do you say 'I want to buy fish'? Luna: Is it 我想買魚? Lucas: Perfect. I want to buy fish. And when you say 'one fish', it's 一條魚. Luna: 一條魚. So if I'm at the stall, I say Lucas: Nice. And for vegetables, 'I want to buy vegetables' is 我想買菜. That was from the market episode too. Lucas: Exactly. Now, there's a phrase that's really useful when you're picking out produce. It's how to ask 'how much per catty?' So I can ask 幾多錢一斤 for the fish or the vegetables. Lucas: Yes. And it's a great way to compare prices. Now, have you ever bought something at the market and the seller asks if you want it cut? Luna: Oh, that's a good one. How do I say that? Lucas: The seller might ask That means 'do you want me to cut it for you?' That's handy because sometimes you want it sliced for cooking. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice that. Say it with me: 要唔要幫你切. Lucas: Great. Now, let's put it all together in a little scene. You're at the wet market, you see some nice fish. What do you say? Lucas: Then the seller tells you the price per catty. Lucas: And if you want it cleaned, you might ask the seller to cut it. The seller asks 要唔要幫你切, and you can respond... Luna: 好啦, 要. Or if not, 唔使. Lucas: Perfect. You're getting the hang of it. Let's do one more repetition. Repeat after me: 我想買魚. Lucas: Awesome. Now, a quick tip: at the wet market, people often say 老闆 when they're getting the seller's attention. You can add that at the start. Luna: So like 老闆, 我想買魚. Lucas: Yes, that's very natural. How much is that? Lucas: You're ready for the market. Let's do a final round. I'll say the English, you say the Cantonese. Luna: Okay. Lucas: I want to buy fish. Lucas: One fish. Luna: 一條魚. Lucas: I want to buy vegetables. Lucas: How much per catty? Lucas: Do you want me to cut it? Lucas: You nailed it. See you next time for more Cantonese with Fexingo. Luna: Bye bye!
