- 0:00Speaker: Is this how I'm showing up?
- 0:02Speaker: I can do better, right?
- 0:04Speaker: Really?
- 0:05Speaker: Hello, what's up?
- 0:06Speaker: This is Rae!
- 0:07Speaker: With you, Rae, I'll play some things for
- 0:08Speaker: life.
- 0:08Speaker: And this is tips from this creative soul
- 0:10Speaker: to hopefully inspire you on your journey or
- 0:12Speaker: at the very least remind you with some
- 0:13Speaker: laughs.
- 0:16Speaker: And so today we are going to talk
- 0:20Speaker: about how we show up.
- 0:21Speaker: Oh yeah, let's get real.
- 0:24Speaker: Craving real advice.
- 0:26Speaker: Tired of feeling like every other small business
- 0:28Speaker: owner or solopreneur is raking in the dough
- 0:31Speaker: while you just seem to be raking, secretly
- 0:34Speaker: looking for a reminder that starting your own
- 0:36Speaker: business is not as glamorous as others make
- 0:39Speaker: it look.
- 0:40Speaker: Whether you're looking to change the game in
- 0:42Speaker: your relationships at home or at the workplace,
- 0:45Speaker: you've come to the right place.
- 0:47Speaker: My name is Rae.
- 0:48Speaker: I went from corporate America to running my
- 0:50Speaker: own small business to becoming a solopreneur.
- 0:52Speaker: I'm a professional actor and dare we say
- 0:55Speaker: a professional busybody because this body is about
- 0:58Speaker: to be busy all up in your biz.
- 1:00Speaker: So let's get real.
- 1:02Speaker: All right, so I was looking through my
- 1:09Speaker: videos because I needed to, I was like,
- 1:12Speaker: you know what?
- 1:12Speaker: I don't have any video footage on my
- 1:15Speaker: acting profiles and this is ridiculous.
- 1:17Speaker: I've been an actor for a ridiculous number
- 1:21Speaker: of years.
- 1:21Speaker: I have done things on screen.
- 1:24Speaker: I have done things on stage.
- 1:25Speaker: I am proud of my work.
- 1:28Speaker: I don't suck and yet I've got nothing
- 1:32Speaker: out there to at least make me look
- 1:34Speaker: like I've done something.
- 1:36Speaker: I haven't done any like major things but
- 1:41Speaker: I have skills and no one's seen this
- 1:44Speaker: and I know, I've known for years that
- 1:46Speaker: having video on your actor profile is a
- 1:48Speaker: must.
- 1:49Speaker: Why don't I have video?
- 1:51Speaker: And it used to be in the world
- 1:52Speaker: of acting, if you're like, Rae, I'm not
- 1:54Speaker: an actor.
- 1:54Speaker: Okay, hold up, hold up.
- 1:56Speaker: I didn't say you have to be an
- 1:57Speaker: actor.
- 1:57Speaker: You know, you know I get there.
- 2:00Speaker: It just takes a little while but that's
- 2:02Speaker: why I like these videos.
- 2:03Speaker: I mean, I kind of like these videos.
- 2:05Speaker: Okay, so I love editing things and creating
- 2:09Speaker: these beautifully edited masterpieces and I love watching
- 2:13Speaker: well edited videos.
- 2:16Speaker: You know, where there's like the closeup shot
- 2:18Speaker: and just the music and the lighting and
- 2:20Speaker: the soft tone.
- 2:23Speaker: And so as I make my practice, I
- 2:25Speaker: try to remind myself that it's okay to
- 2:29Speaker: be tired in the morning and that it's
- 2:33Speaker: okay to have a cup of tea.
- 2:35Speaker: Like I like watching those videos.
- 2:38Speaker: They make me feel relaxed and I also
- 2:40Speaker: kind of like learning about different camera angles
- 2:42Speaker: and stuff too.
- 2:43Speaker: I think that's so cool but I'm a
- 2:44Speaker: busy girl and so when I have this
- 2:47Speaker: pressure on myself to make another really well
- 2:52Speaker: done edited video, just keep trying those out
- 2:54Speaker: and try to make one at least once
- 2:56Speaker: a week.
- 2:56Speaker: It just wasn't happening.
- 2:57Speaker: It was not happening and then the hard
- 2:59Speaker: drive was over full and over full.
- 3:01Speaker: The hard drive was full and then that
- 3:04Speaker: computer crashed and then I was trying to
- 3:06Speaker: like recover files and then there's the whole
- 3:10Speaker: thing, right?
- 3:11Speaker: Then the hard drive wasn't readable anymore.
- 3:13Speaker: Oh my God, that's gracious.
- 3:14Speaker: And so I already have so much on
- 3:17Speaker: the to-do list.
- 3:19Speaker: I finally had to say, you know what?
- 3:21Speaker: This needs the get it done rule and
- 3:23Speaker: so tip number one today, party people.
- 3:28Speaker: Get it done.
- 3:30Speaker: Have a get it done rule in your
- 3:31Speaker: life.
- 3:32Speaker: Maybe apply like a three second rule to
- 3:37Speaker: the get it done rule or three step
- 3:39Speaker: rule.
- 3:39Speaker: I don't know why three came in there.
- 3:40Speaker: The holy trinity.
- 3:42Speaker: I don't know, three just seems like a
- 3:43Speaker: good number but you don't want like 10
- 3:49Speaker: seconds or 10 steps before the get it
- 3:51Speaker: done rule applies.
- 3:52Speaker: So I'm working out my get it done
- 3:54Speaker: rule as we're talking or as I'm yammering
- 3:57Speaker: but hopefully you're talking too.
- 3:58Speaker: You're like, yeah, how can I do a
- 4:00Speaker: get it done rule, son?
- 4:02Speaker: Okay, so I'm thinking if I need some
- 4:08Speaker: kind of outline like if it has been
- 4:10Speaker: more than one day or if I've thought
- 4:17Speaker: about it, let's see, if I've tried to,
- 4:20Speaker: if I've touched it three times and it
- 4:23Speaker: has been at least touched it three times,
- 4:38Speaker: been, touched it three times, been more than
- 4:42Speaker: two days, touched it three times in more
- 4:44Speaker: than one day and I need something with
- 4:46Speaker: two.
- 4:46Speaker: I need something with two.
- 4:47Speaker: I'll figure it out, right?
- 4:49Speaker: But whatever it is, if I've touched it
- 4:52Speaker: at least three times so I've made some
- 4:54Speaker: sort of attempt on it, if it's appeared
- 4:57Speaker: in my journal twice so I've made an
- 4:59Speaker: attempt, it's appeared in my journal twice and
- 5:02Speaker: it's been at least a day then I
- 5:07Speaker: just need to be like, you know what,
- 5:07Speaker: I just gotta get it done.
- 5:09Speaker: Okay, so with this kind of new frame
- 5:11Speaker: that I just came up with, let's see
- 5:13Speaker: if I can apply this, all right?
- 5:15Speaker: So one of the things that I know
- 5:20Speaker: I need to do today is to finish
- 5:25Speaker: this website project, okay?
- 5:27Speaker: So if it's appeared in my evening journal
- 5:33Speaker: because I try to journal out some of
- 5:36Speaker: the things that happen in my day so
- 5:37Speaker: that the feeling of, oh yeah, I gotta
- 5:39Speaker: finish that.
- 5:40Speaker: If the feeling has appeared at least three
- 5:41Speaker: times and I've, no, I've touched, I've tried.
- 5:49Speaker: I've worked on this project at least three
- 5:50Speaker: times.
- 5:51Speaker: I've, it's appeared in my journal two times
- 5:53Speaker: and it's due in a day or it's
- 5:56Speaker: been at least a day then I just
- 5:58Speaker: gotta say, you know what, it's not gonna
- 5:59Speaker: be perfect.
- 5:59Speaker: I'm just gonna get it done in whatever
- 6:01Speaker: version it's gonna happen and that's what's gonna
- 6:02Speaker: happen, okay?
- 6:04Speaker: Lately, I've been kind of waiting until the
- 6:06Speaker: day certain things are due to do them.
- 6:09Speaker: It's partly been this kind of like, I
- 6:12Speaker: want to have a day off.
- 6:14Speaker: I want my weekend back.
- 6:15Speaker: So that's definitely been a thing for me.
- 6:19Speaker: But in order to stop that bratty kid
- 6:24Speaker: inside of me, I need to also take
- 6:26Speaker: a moment to re-look at my schedule
- 6:28Speaker: and to re-look at how, why am
- 6:30Speaker: I being a brat?
- 6:31Speaker: Because I feel like I've lost control, right?
- 6:33Speaker: Did I wanna own my own business so
- 6:34Speaker: I could have control, could be in control?
- 6:36Speaker: And so I'm looking at my schedule and
- 6:40Speaker: I'm seeing slowly this creep of, oh, how
- 6:42Speaker: did I go to work in seven days
- 6:44Speaker: a week again?
- 6:45Speaker: No, I don't wanna do that.
- 6:47Speaker: I don't wanna do that.
- 6:49Speaker: And for a while, like Sunday was supposed
- 6:51Speaker: to be my day off, but it really
- 6:52Speaker: just became a day of getting stuff done
- 6:53Speaker: for the rest of the week or feeling
- 6:56Speaker: guilty about not getting stuff done for the
- 6:58Speaker: rest of the week or being part of
- 7:01Speaker: the day that I spent traveling because I
- 7:03Speaker: was traveling all weekend for work.
- 7:07Speaker: Okay, so I'm working to reclaim my weekends.
- 7:11Speaker: This year, I actually looked at my schedule
- 7:13Speaker: and I wanna give myself Saturday and Sunday
- 7:16Speaker: off.
- 7:17Speaker: And part of me says, well, how are
- 7:19Speaker: you gonna do that?
- 7:21Speaker: Because you make good money on the weekends.
- 7:23Speaker: And when I looked at the last couple
- 7:24Speaker: of months, I'm like, actually, the money I
- 7:26Speaker: make on the weekends is really nothing better
- 7:28Speaker: than during the week.
- 7:29Speaker: So maybe I need to figure out how
- 7:30Speaker: to make the week more happening so that
- 7:32Speaker: I don't miss this weekend money.
- 7:34Speaker: Because I would like some time to not
- 7:38Speaker: think about my work all the time and
- 7:42Speaker: to feel balanced and to feel in control.
- 7:45Speaker: I've got control issues, apparently.
- 7:48Speaker: So I'm applying some kind of role, applying
- 7:54Speaker: some kind of role in order to allow
- 7:57Speaker: oneself to say, it's okay that this is
- 8:00Speaker: not perfect and it's time to get this
- 8:02Speaker: done.
- 8:02Speaker: I think that is key.
- 8:07Speaker: A lot of times, the get it done
- 8:09Speaker: version is good enough.
- 8:12Speaker: Now, I'm also a fan of the do
- 8:13Speaker: it right the first time so you don't
- 8:15Speaker: have to go back and do it again.
- 8:16Speaker: But if nothing's getting done because you're looking
- 8:21Speaker: for perfection constantly on that first round, then
- 8:26Speaker: you're not exactly improving your situation either.
- 8:31Speaker: So with these YouTube videos, this kind of
- 8:34Speaker: like talking to camera version is part of
- 8:36Speaker: my get it done.
- 8:39Speaker: And so that's a large part of why
- 8:41Speaker: I want to do these videos is, yes,
- 8:44Speaker: I love something that is more visually interesting
- 8:47Speaker: and edited and can just really show like
- 8:50Speaker: me outdoors and indoors and just all the
- 8:52Speaker: wackiness that is my life.
- 8:53Speaker: But at the end of the day, if
- 8:54Speaker: I don't have the time to edit those
- 8:56Speaker: videos, I gotta change my plan because I'm
- 8:59Speaker: not doing myself any favors, right?
- 9:01Speaker: I'm not building the viewership or videos in
- 9:09Speaker: the way that I want.
- 9:10Speaker: Why did I want to make videos in
- 9:12Speaker: the first place?
- 9:12Speaker: Well, one reason was because I felt like
- 9:16Speaker: I've lived a life, I've done a lot
- 9:17Speaker: of things, and I have business knowledge and
- 9:22Speaker: some life knowledge too that might help others,
- 9:25Speaker: right?
- 9:26Speaker: Part of the reason why my business, one
- 9:28Speaker: of my businesses has a mentoring program is
- 9:30Speaker: because we wanna help young people who are
- 9:32Speaker: interested in learning.
- 9:34Speaker: That's it.
- 9:35Speaker: And hey, if you're interested in learning, sure,
- 9:37Speaker: we'll help you.
- 9:38Speaker: We wanna work with you.
- 9:38Speaker: Absolutely.
- 9:39Speaker: If you're not interested in learning, I don't
- 9:42Speaker: wanna force on you.
- 9:43Speaker: So what can I say, right?
- 9:46Speaker: And I think YouTube is a really interesting
- 9:48Speaker: space for that is people who are interested
- 9:50Speaker: in learning, go to YouTube to learn things.
- 9:53Speaker: And I'm like, well, this is a nice
- 9:54Speaker: way to just, it's not taking more time
- 9:57Speaker: out of my day per se in the
- 9:59Speaker: sense that I don't have to get on
- 10:03Speaker: in my car or on a bus and
- 10:06Speaker: travel a long distance in order to help
- 10:08Speaker: some people, right?
- 10:10Speaker: And people don't have to pay for it.
- 10:12Speaker: So that's nice for them.
- 10:14Speaker: And I can reach a larger group of
- 10:16Speaker: people if I remember just to show up.
- 10:19Speaker: I gotta do my part.
- 10:20Speaker: I gotta show up and share what I
- 10:22Speaker: know.
- 10:22Speaker: If I don't do my part, if I
- 10:24Speaker: don't show up that I'm not helping anybody
- 10:26Speaker: and my failures, my mistakes, these things that
- 10:31Speaker: I know that someone else can learn from,
- 10:34Speaker: they're not gonna know it because I didn't
- 10:38Speaker: do my part, didn't show up.
- 10:41Speaker: And it just, the idea of it has
- 10:49Speaker: to be a video, a good video has
- 10:52Speaker: to be, it has to look like this.
- 10:54Speaker: A good website has to look like this.
- 10:57Speaker: A good career path in your job has
- 11:00Speaker: to look like this.
- 11:02Speaker: That was holding me back because every time
- 11:06Speaker: I didn't reach the goal of what it
- 11:07Speaker: has to look like or achieve what it
- 11:09Speaker: has to look like, every time I didn't
- 11:10Speaker: make that a priority, things just weren't getting
- 11:13Speaker: done.
- 11:14Speaker: And this kind of goes across many areas
- 11:16Speaker: of my life and maybe it does for
- 11:18Speaker: your life too, right?
- 11:19Speaker: What are some areas of your life where
- 11:21Speaker: you have been working on something, it's not
- 11:27Speaker: quite where you want it to be and
- 11:29Speaker: you haven't finished it.
- 11:31Speaker: You're not really getting it done.
- 11:34Speaker: You're not putting yourself out there.
- 11:37Speaker: Can you make the change?
- 11:39Speaker: One of my Cambly friends, so I've talked
- 11:42Speaker: about Cambly before.
- 11:43Speaker: It's this online platform where one can say,
- 11:47Speaker: I will help tutor people in English and
- 11:50Speaker: you can use their Cambly lessons or you
- 11:52Speaker: can have conversations with people.
- 11:53Speaker: I love the Cambly.
- 11:55Speaker: I think it's so fun.
- 11:56Speaker: I actually met a woman in a job.
- 11:58Speaker: I was doing a job interview and one
- 12:00Speaker: of the interviewees was someone who worked for
- 12:06Speaker: Cambly and that was like her full-time
- 12:09Speaker: income but she was also not living in
- 12:12Speaker: the US at the time.
- 12:13Speaker: She would think she was in India.
- 12:17Speaker: She was a US citizen living in India.
- 12:21Speaker: I don't even know how long she was
- 12:22Speaker: living there for.
- 12:26Speaker: I wound up having to kind of withdraw
- 12:28Speaker: the work offer because she wasn't honest about
- 12:32Speaker: some things up front.
- 12:33Speaker: Like the fact that my job posting said,
- 12:37Speaker: you need to be living in the US
- 12:40Speaker: and be able to do these times and
- 12:43Speaker: she said, yes, I can.
- 12:44Speaker: And then after all the paperwork and whatnot,
- 12:49Speaker: it comes out that she's actually living in
- 12:51Speaker: India and she's not available for any of
- 12:54Speaker: the times that we need.
- 12:56Speaker: She's like, oh yeah, I can work from
- 12:58Speaker: midnight your time zone to like 5 a
- 13:01Speaker: .m. So that's not what we said we
- 13:06Speaker: were looking for.
- 13:07Speaker: Like you want students who are available in
- 13:10Speaker: Asia time zone which is great, but that's
- 13:12Speaker: not what we're offering.
- 13:13Speaker: That's not what we're offering, lady.
- 13:15Speaker: Like I just, yeah.
- 13:20Speaker: When people say, this is my thing.
- 13:21Speaker: When someone says, I appreciate you, that for
- 13:25Speaker: me, it is the red flag.
- 13:30Speaker: I know it's the thing to say.
- 13:32Speaker: I know it's a thing to say, but
- 13:34Speaker: every time someone has said that to me,
- 13:37Speaker: I appreciate you.
- 13:40Speaker: That person has turned around and done something
- 13:44Speaker: evil or destructive every single time.
- 13:51Speaker: The lady who tried to be a squatter
- 13:53Speaker: when I was renting a room out to
- 13:56Speaker: her, I was renting a bed out to
- 13:58Speaker: her and she called the cops because I
- 14:01Speaker: told her she had to leave because she
- 14:04Speaker: was insisting on like staying in other people's
- 14:06Speaker: beds and just doing all kinds of crazy
- 14:07Speaker: stuff.
- 14:08Speaker: She called the cops and I had to,
- 14:14Speaker: it was this whole crazy thing.
- 14:15Speaker: I just don't even wanna get into it.
- 14:17Speaker: And being threatened of being arrested because I
- 14:23Speaker: had said, I'm gonna have to change the
- 14:26Speaker: locks.
- 14:27Speaker: And they're like, if you change the locks,
- 14:28Speaker: we're gonna arrest you.
- 14:29Speaker: And I was like, what?
- 14:30Speaker: I'm the lease holder here.
- 14:32Speaker: What is going on?
- 14:34Speaker: But she, thank you, NYPD.
- 14:39Speaker: Thankfully, she took her money and left and
- 14:43Speaker: I never saw her again.
- 14:44Speaker: But that was probably, that was one of
- 14:47Speaker: the worst moments of my life.
- 14:48Speaker: And that's a moment where I said, I've
- 14:51Speaker: lost faith in the police system of this
- 14:55Speaker: city.
- 14:57Speaker: Cause I really thought, I was like, what?
- 14:59Speaker: I thought I was gonna be arrested.
- 15:00Speaker: And I actually called the precinct to check
- 15:04Speaker: if I could change the locks.
- 15:05Speaker: And I was told that I could.
- 15:07Speaker: So when this police officer shows up and
- 15:09Speaker: says, you can't change the locks.
- 15:11Speaker: If you do, I'm gonna arrest you right
- 15:12Speaker: now.
- 15:15Speaker: That was not fun.
- 15:18Speaker: That was not fun.
- 15:22Speaker: And I'm thinking, I'm not looking for trouble.
- 15:26Speaker: What is going on here?
- 15:29Speaker: And so craziness.
- 15:35Speaker: But that is in the past.
- 15:37Speaker: That is in the past.
- 15:38Speaker: And so she was the first person who
- 15:42Speaker: ever said to me, I appreciate you.
- 15:45Speaker: And then, you know, like four days later
- 15:48Speaker: or something like that, the cops are called
- 15:52Speaker: to my home to threaten me basically.
- 15:56Speaker: So yeah, she was evil and crazy.
- 15:59Speaker: And I'm just saying, watch out for people
- 16:04Speaker: who say that phrase.
- 16:05Speaker: Don't say that phrase.
- 16:06Speaker: I don't know.
- 16:07Speaker: I don't know.
- 16:08Speaker: Or maybe it's just like people I meet
- 16:12Speaker: who say that phrase are just pure evil.
- 16:18Speaker: Now, perfection.
- 16:23Speaker: Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 16:25Speaker: You don't wanna have to go back and
- 16:27Speaker: redo something.
- 16:28Speaker: But at the end of the day, you
- 16:29Speaker: gotta get it done.
- 16:30Speaker: Because if we're still delayed, we will never
- 16:36Speaker: get that out there.
- 16:40Speaker: Whatever it is, right?
- 16:45Speaker: My businesses are designed to help people.
- 16:48Speaker: I want to help people.
- 16:51Speaker: If, oh gosh, McDonald's like waited until they
- 17:00Speaker: had the idea of the Big Mac before
- 17:02Speaker: actually ever selling a burger, they would never
- 17:06Speaker: have gotten off the ground, right?
- 17:09Speaker: Or just would have taken them longer.
- 17:10Speaker: So sometimes you gotta make the leap.
- 17:12Speaker: There's this really interesting podcast where the creators
- 17:18Speaker: pick a moment in time and then they
- 17:20Speaker: kind of go back and do like a
- 17:22Speaker: deep dive into that moment in time.
- 17:24Speaker: And so they picked this year.
- 17:26Speaker: I forget what year it was.
- 17:28Speaker: But one episode was about the first Pizza
- 17:33Speaker: Hut in, I wanna say in Russia.
- 17:38Speaker: Was it Pizza Hut in Russia?
- 17:40Speaker: Yes, it was Pizza Hut in, wait, or
- 17:42Speaker: was it Germany?
- 17:44Speaker: Hmm, now I'm thinking about like walls coming
- 17:47Speaker: down.
- 17:48Speaker: All right, so it was a European Pizza
- 17:50Speaker: Hut.
- 17:52Speaker: But I thought he mentioned Gorbachev.
- 17:54Speaker: Okay, so we're going to say Russian Pizza
- 18:02Speaker: Hut.
- 18:04Speaker: And the hurdles that had to be overcome
- 18:08Speaker: in order to make this happen.
- 18:10Speaker: And it finally did happen.
- 18:12Speaker: And it was great and everything was working.
- 18:14Speaker: And then things beyond the franchise owner and
- 18:22Speaker: the corporate's control.
- 18:24Speaker: Basically things beyond corporate's control led to having
- 18:28Speaker: to close the restaurant.
- 18:31Speaker: So it worked really well for a number
- 18:33Speaker: of years.
- 18:34Speaker: And then they had to shut it down.
- 18:37Speaker: And that's kind of like, I guess, right?
- 18:39Speaker: Sometimes we do the thing to get it
- 18:44Speaker: done.
- 18:45Speaker: And we put it out there and it's
- 18:48Speaker: rocking and rolling.
- 18:49Speaker: And then things beyond our control, we have
- 18:52Speaker: to shut it down or change it.
- 18:54Speaker: And that's life.
- 18:55Speaker: Life has changed.
- 18:57Speaker: Life is not stand still.
- 18:58Speaker: It's gonna be the same way every day.
- 19:00Speaker: Sometimes it may feel like the McDonald's burger
- 19:05Speaker: never changes.
- 19:06Speaker: Or it may feel like the job you
- 19:09Speaker: go to every day never changes, but life
- 19:13Speaker: has changed.
- 19:13Speaker: You are always changing.
- 19:15Speaker: The things around you are always changing.
- 19:16Speaker: The businesses you're involved in are always changing.
- 19:18Speaker: Friendships are always changing.
- 19:19Speaker: Change is a part of life.
- 19:21Speaker: It is normal.
- 19:22Speaker: The leaves outside are changing or the sand
- 19:25Speaker: is changing.
- 19:29Speaker: So yeah, my videos are what they are
- 19:34Speaker: because I just need to get them done.
- 19:36Speaker: And I am gonna go back to the
- 19:39Speaker: editing.
- 19:41Speaker: I've made some time in my schedule to
- 19:43Speaker: find a way to go back to that
- 19:44Speaker: old finish.
- 19:45Speaker: And to edit some stuff.
- 19:49Speaker: And videos are not the only thing in
- 19:51Speaker: my life where I'm like, I need to
- 19:52Speaker: apply the get it done philosophy.
- 19:54Speaker: My website, I need to just focus on
- 19:56Speaker: getting it done.
- 19:58Speaker: My career as an artist, I need to
- 20:01Speaker: just focus on getting it done, getting it
- 20:04Speaker: out there.
- 20:05Speaker: So I started going through these videos.
- 20:07Speaker: I found some video clips where I looked
- 20:11Speaker: at myself going, oh my God, I always
- 20:15Speaker: tell my students, try, rehearse, do your best.
- 20:18Speaker: Come on, you can do this.
- 20:20Speaker: I'm always pushing my students to do their
- 20:22Speaker: best.
- 20:23Speaker: And the video that I can find is
- 20:26Speaker: not me at my best.
- 20:29Speaker: It's doable.
- 20:31Speaker: It's presentable.
- 20:33Speaker: But this isn't me at my best.
- 20:36Speaker: And the thing that really bugs me is
- 20:38Speaker: that there are projects that I participated in
- 20:42Speaker: where I wasn't stressed out and I did
- 20:45Speaker: excellent work.
- 20:47Speaker: And those people never gave me back my
- 20:49Speaker: footage.
- 20:50Speaker: I got into it with one producer and
- 20:56Speaker: I'm actually considering talking to a lawyer because
- 21:00Speaker: I don't think that what they did was
- 21:04Speaker: right.
- 21:05Speaker: And then to say to me, you'll get
- 21:10Speaker: it when you get it if we have
- 21:12Speaker: anything to give you, I don't think it's
- 21:13Speaker: okay.
- 21:18Speaker: And then part of me says, eh, just
- 21:20Speaker: put it on your IMDb and just move
- 21:22Speaker: on.
- 21:23Speaker: Like who the F cares, right?
- 21:25Speaker: But there's also the principle of the matter.
- 21:27Speaker: There's certain things that one shouldn't do.
- 21:29Speaker: And when you look at different areas of
- 21:33Speaker: the arts industry and how artists talk now
- 21:35Speaker: about, yeah, you know, back in the day,
- 21:38Speaker: as musicians, we used to just accept that
- 21:42Speaker: this is the way things were done.
- 21:44Speaker: But now we say, they really shouldn't have
- 21:47Speaker: been like that.
- 21:48Speaker: It's not okay to talk about, you know,
- 21:52Speaker: 15 year olds virginity or it's not okay
- 21:55Speaker: to give people contracts where they're making only
- 21:58Speaker: one penny for every album that they sell
- 22:03Speaker: or to offer a young person a million
- 22:06Speaker: dollars upfront.
- 22:08Speaker: But then say, you're gonna keep everything else,
- 22:13Speaker: right?
- 22:13Speaker: We gotta make sure we get our money
- 22:14Speaker: back.
- 22:15Speaker: By the way, you have to have, go
- 22:17Speaker: tour all these things and take all these
- 22:19Speaker: people with you.
- 22:20Speaker: If we're taking the money for those people
- 22:22Speaker: out of the money you make for being
- 22:27Speaker: an athlete or being a musician, we're going
- 22:31Speaker: to take the money as things go along.
- 22:35Speaker: Even though now you're making millions and billions
- 22:38Speaker: of dollars, the artist never sees it because
- 22:40Speaker: the company says, oh no, we gotta pay
- 22:41Speaker: for all these things, right?
- 22:43Speaker: We insisted you had the best before now
- 22:44Speaker: we have to make sure those are paid
- 22:46Speaker: for.
- 22:54Speaker: So there's just a number of areas where
- 22:59Speaker: I feel like as an artist, as a
- 23:02Speaker: business owner, as a woman, this should not
- 23:06Speaker: be okay.
- 23:08Speaker: And I need to speak up, but in
- 23:10Speaker: speaking up, am I delaying myself from focusing
- 23:14Speaker: on getting things done, just moving on?
- 23:18Speaker: Is this the fight you fight?
- 23:19Speaker: Is this the fight that you die on
- 23:22Speaker: your sword for?
- 23:24Speaker: Or do you just say, yeah, whatever, it
- 23:26Speaker: is what it is, right?
- 23:28Speaker: Cause I couldn't help someone else by fighting
- 23:29Speaker: that fight or get me done, I don't
- 23:34Speaker: know.
- 23:35Speaker: But as you know, I need to get
- 23:36Speaker: things done.
- 23:37Speaker: I need to get more done and you
- 23:39Speaker: probably should too.
- 23:40Speaker: You're watching YouTube right now.
- 23:44Speaker: No, I'm kind of kidding because I use
- 23:46Speaker: YouTube for research all the time, all the
- 23:49Speaker: time.
- 23:50Speaker: And a lot of times I also find
- 23:52Speaker: it inspirational.
- 23:54Speaker: Like, ah, that is so cool.
- 23:56Speaker: That person just overcame this obstacle.
- 24:02Speaker: That is so cool.
- 24:03Speaker: Or that person has a good organizational technique.
- 24:05Speaker: I think I'll go try that, right?
- 24:07Speaker: And so it prompts me to make a
- 24:09Speaker: change.
- 24:10Speaker: But I know that I also need to
- 24:16Speaker: remind myself not to totally rely on external
- 24:21Speaker: resources to get things done and not to
- 24:25Speaker: use the research as an excuse to delay
- 24:29Speaker: getting things done.
- 24:31Speaker: So yeah, I gotta go edit some videos.
- 24:33Speaker: I gotta go work on my taxes.
- 24:35Speaker: I gotta go take a walk.
- 24:37Speaker: I gotta go do things, drink a cup
- 24:38Speaker: of water.
- 24:38Speaker: Oh my goodness, the list is long.
- 24:40Speaker: But it's gonna be fun.
- 24:41Speaker: It's gonna, getting things done is gonna be
- 24:43Speaker: fun.
- 24:43Speaker: So figure out how are you gonna make
- 24:44Speaker: it fun for yourself?
- 24:46Speaker: How are you gonna make it fun for
- 24:47Speaker: yourself to risk failing?
- 24:53Speaker: It's something you gotta be comfortable with.
- 24:54Speaker: It's not, oh, I might not, you might
- 24:56Speaker: not love it.
- 24:58Speaker: You're probably not gonna love it.
- 24:59Speaker: Whatever it is that needs to get done,
- 25:00Speaker: you're not gonna love it.
- 25:02Speaker: That's okay.
- 25:02Speaker: It's okay.
- 25:03Speaker: So, all right.
- 25:05Speaker: We don't love it, except that you don't
- 25:06Speaker: love it.
- 25:07Speaker: And then except that it's just gotta get
- 25:08Speaker: done and it's gonna be what it's gonna
- 25:10Speaker: be.
- 25:12Speaker: And maybe, maybe we add to this process
- 25:15Speaker: whether or not we're allowed to tweak it,
- 25:18Speaker: touch it, or change it.
- 25:20Speaker: But, oh, maybe that's the two.
- 25:23Speaker: Okay, so you've touched it three times.
- 25:31Speaker: It, I don't know, some kind of, now
- 25:35Speaker: I was saying like within a day.
- 25:37Speaker: Okay, you touch it three times, get it
- 25:39Speaker: done within a day, and you have to
- 25:42Speaker: wait two months before you're even allowed to
- 25:45Speaker: think about it, touch it, change it again.
- 25:47Speaker: I love it.
- 25:48Speaker: I love it.
- 25:49Speaker: Three, two, one.
- 25:51Speaker: Three, one, two.
- 25:52Speaker: I love it.
- 25:53Speaker: Anyway, I love it, okay?
- 25:55Speaker: Because this way it's gonna keep me from,
- 25:58Speaker: oh, I just worked on that, but you
- 26:00Speaker: know what?
- 26:00Speaker: I just wanna change this one little thing
- 26:02Speaker: because I'm like that, right?
- 26:03Speaker: I just wanna fix this little thing.
- 26:05Speaker: So, three, one, two.
- 26:09Speaker: Three, two, one.
- 26:10Speaker: One, two, three.
- 26:11Speaker: One, two, three, let's get it done.
- 26:13Speaker: Okay, my friend, I hope some of this
- 26:15Speaker: was helpful.
- 26:16Speaker: What did we learn today?
- 26:18Speaker: What did we learn today, kids?
- 26:20Speaker: We've learned don't trust somebody who says, I
- 26:24Speaker: appreciate you, evil.
- 26:28Speaker: We've learned that just because you call the
- 26:32Speaker: police precinct when the cops show up at
- 26:35Speaker: your house, they may have a different story.
- 26:38Speaker: Just saying.
- 26:41Speaker: We've learned that sometimes you just need to
- 26:45Speaker: get it done.
- 26:46Speaker: And you might be someone like me who
- 26:47Speaker: has to put a policy in place and
- 26:49Speaker: be like, okay, I cannot keep wasting energy,
- 26:52Speaker: avoiding this or ignoring this or changing this
- 26:55Speaker: just or waiting for perfection, doing the research.
- 26:58Speaker: I just need to get it done and
- 27:01Speaker: have a rule in place so that once
- 27:03Speaker: it's done, it's done.
- 27:07Speaker: You don't keep fiddling.
- 27:09Speaker: All right, friends, this has been Rae with
- 27:11Speaker: Get Real Rae and I hope you found
