- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:26Our current series is meaningful work, calling, formation,
- 0:30service, and love.
- 0:33When you were a little kid, did you
- 0:35ever get a gift that you really loved?
- 0:38This happened to me Christmas, I was probably
- 0:41seven or eight years old.
- 0:43I was in Seattle visiting my mom's extended
- 0:45family, and her older brothers, John and Dan,
- 0:50had noticed that I was a really wiggly
- 0:52kid.
- 0:52I was always moving around, I was always
- 0:54taking pencils and beating out a rhythm on
- 0:56a table, or just using my hands on
- 0:58my tummy or something like that.
- 0:59A couple years later, I would start taking
- 1:01piano lessons, and that was a great kind
- 1:03of venue for me to explore those percussive
- 1:06instincts.
- 1:08But Dan and John, they saw, wow, Chris
- 1:11would probably really appreciate something along these lines.
- 1:13So what they got me for Christmas that
- 1:16year was the Yamaha DD-20 drum kit.
- 1:21Okay, so now this is a small, compact,
- 1:24single-unit digital drum kit.
- 1:26So it's maybe 18 inches long, it's got
- 1:28these four little drum faces on it that
- 1:31are maybe each the size of a tea
- 1:32saucer.
- 1:33But it's a Yamaha tool, so it's got
- 1:35a hundred different settings, and a dial you
- 1:37can spin to try the different settings, and
- 1:38it makes different techno noises or different styles.
- 1:42And I just went ballistic, in a good
- 1:44way.
- 1:44I was like, this is amazing!
- 1:46Thank you, Uncle John, thank you, Uncle Dan,
- 1:49thank you, thank you, thank you, amazing!
- 1:51And it wasn't just in the moment, right?
- 1:52I used that thing for a couple years,
- 1:55just going down to the basement, because that's
- 1:57where my parents made me take it because
- 1:58it was so noisy, and just taking the
- 2:00drumsticks and beating those tiny little digital drum
- 2:03faces for all, you know, my heart could
- 2:05muster.
- 2:05It was an incredible gift.
- 2:07And what I also remember from that Christmas
- 2:10celebration is the smiles on Uncle John's and
- 2:14Uncle Dan's faces.
- 2:15They were so happy.
- 2:17They had given the gift, but seeing me
- 2:19just enthralled by it obviously brought them joy,
- 2:23too.
- 2:24Joy comes from giving.
- 2:27Generosity leads to joy.
- 2:30This is not rocket science.
- 2:31This is not some secret spiritual principle that
- 2:34nobody has ever talked about, right?
- 2:36We know from the teaching of Jesus himself,
- 2:38it is more blessed to give than to
- 2:40receive.
- 2:41And yet, it seems like all of us
- 2:43have trouble believing this.
- 2:44All of us have trouble really believing that
- 2:47there's joy on the other side of generosity.
- 2:50And so, as we think about the meaning
- 2:52of our work, and what it means to
- 2:53love others through our work, I want to
- 2:55focus on generosity and how we use the
- 2:59resources that we earn through our work can
- 3:03be part of what contributes to the meaning
- 3:04of our job.
- 3:06So if you want your job to be
- 3:07more meaningful, I would argue give more freely
- 3:11and more joyfully, and you'll realize more meaning
- 3:14in your job.
- 3:15Okay, so thinking about kind of what gives
- 3:17our work meaning, we've talked about a lot
- 3:19of dimensions here.
- 3:20You might remember that in the calling section
- 3:24of the series, I interviewed a scholar and
- 3:26writer named Elaine Howard Eklund, and it was
- 3:29about her book co-authored with Denise Daniels,
- 3:32Working for Better.
- 3:34And one of the concepts that they introduce
- 3:35in that book is that calling can have
- 3:37multiple dimensions.
- 3:38So like, one dimension is like where your
- 3:41work matters.
- 3:42Does it matter at work or beyond the
- 3:44workplace?
- 3:45And then another dimension is why your work
- 3:48matters.
- 3:49Does it matter in some way that's intrinsic
- 3:51to the work or extrinsic to the work?
- 3:53And so they kind of divide it up
- 3:54with these two different dimensions, four quadrants.
- 3:57And one of those quadrants would be the
- 3:59beyond the workplace and extrinsic to the work.
- 4:03And in my follow-up episode, I kind
- 4:05of said, hey, even if that's where you're
- 4:08at, where your main motivation is what you
- 4:10do with your money from your job, see
- 4:11if you can find some intrinsic motivation related
- 4:13to the job itself.
- 4:14That's really going to help you.
- 4:15And I still stand by that.
- 4:16I still think that.
- 4:17But it's also important to recognize that quadrant
- 4:19still matters.
- 4:20Even if it's not a complete picture of
- 4:23how we can be motivated at work, it's
- 4:25still meaningful how we use the resources that
- 4:27we earn through our jobs.
- 4:29The opportunities that arrive in our lives, opportunities
- 4:32to be generous, to give to others because
- 4:35of our paycheck, those opportunities matter.
- 4:38That's part of why our job matters.
- 4:40That's part of what makes it meaningful.
- 4:42And again, it's part of what gives us
- 4:44an opportunity for joy.
- 4:47Okay, so I want to look at a
- 4:50scripture passage that explores this and kind of
- 4:52think about why is it that we have
- 4:54trouble believing that generosity leads to joy.
- 4:57So let me turn to 2 Corinthians.
- 5:01This is chapter 8.
- 5:03And just some context here.
- 5:04The entire letter of Paul to the Corinthians
- 5:06here in 2 Corinthians is kind of a
- 5:09fundraising letter.
- 5:10He addresses a number of different issues, but
- 5:11his main reason for writing is for what
- 5:14he's going to do in this chapter, which
- 5:15is to ask them to give money to
- 5:17an initiative that's going to support other believers
- 5:20in the city of Jerusalem.
- 5:22So he starts by talking about how he
- 5:24hasn't just been asking them, he's been asking
- 5:26other communities as well.
- 5:28So he's talking to the community in Macedonia,
- 5:31which is also where the city of Philippi
- 5:33is.
- 5:34So the letter to the Philippians is addressed
- 5:35to that community.
- 5:37So Paul writes, starting in verse 1.
- 5:40And now, brothers and sisters, we want you
- 5:42to know about the grace that God has
- 5:44given the Macedonian churches.
- 5:47In the midst of a very severe trial,
- 5:49their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled
- 5:53up in rich generosity, for I testify that
- 5:56they gave as much as they were able
- 5:58and even beyond their ability.
- 6:01Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with
- 6:04us for the privilege of sharing in this
- 6:06service to the Lord's people.
- 6:08And they exceeded our expectations.
- 6:11They gave themselves first of all to the
- 6:13Lord, and then by the will of God,
- 6:15also to us.
- 6:17Okay, so that's verses 1-5, and just
- 6:20skipping ahead to verse 9, Paul gives some
- 6:22of the theology behind this.
- 6:24He says, Let
- 6:37me read that one again.
- 6:48Okay, what is Paul doing here?
- 6:53Well, let me set up a couple of
- 6:55the observations he's made.
- 6:56He's given this report about what happened with
- 6:59the Macedonian believers, and one of the things
- 7:01he mentions is that they were going through
- 7:03a difficult financial situation themselves, right?
- 7:06He says, So he's saying, they
- 7:16didn't have that much money, but they still
- 7:18wanted to give.
- 7:19And not only did they want to give,
- 7:20on their own initiative, they urgently pleaded with
- 7:23us for the privilege of doing this.
- 7:26They viewed it as a privilege to participate
- 7:28in this initiative that Paul was gathering together
- 7:31money for the believers in Jerusalem.
- 7:35Now, how does Paul characterize that whole situation?
- 7:38That they're motivated, even though they don't have
- 7:40that many resources, to give, to participate.
- 7:42They urgently plead for the privilege.
- 7:46In verse 1, he says, So Paul's saying,
- 7:55when you experience generosity, even if you're not
- 7:59super abundant in resources yourself, you're actually receiving
- 8:02something from God.
- 8:04And again, this parallels what we know from
- 8:06the teaching of Jesus.
- 8:07It is more blessed to give than to
- 8:09receive.
- 8:10When you enter into giving, you receive a
- 8:13blessing.
- 8:13You receive grace from God.
- 8:16Okay, now there could be a misunderstanding here,
- 8:19like a kind of prosperity gospel, health and
- 8:21wealth, like, oh, so if I give money,
- 8:23then God will make me richer?
- 8:24Is that what you're saying?
- 8:25Not necessarily.
- 8:27Although, sometimes God may see fit to do
- 8:29that.
- 8:30But he's talking, I think, about their interior
- 8:32experience.
- 8:34That when you give something material away, you
- 8:37have an interior experience of blessing and grace
- 8:39from God.
- 8:41And this is how he describes it.
- 8:42In the midst of their very severe trial,
- 8:44their overflowing joy welled up in rich generosity.
- 8:49So Paul is saying, these Macedonians, they didn't
- 8:53have much money, but they viewed it as
- 8:55a privilege to give.
- 8:58And when they gave, there was great joy.
- 9:01And that was a manifestation of God's grace
- 9:03to them in their giving.
- 9:06Paul's saying, there's joy on the other side
- 9:08of generosity.
- 9:10Okay, now, why?
- 9:13Why is it hard for us to believe
- 9:14this?
- 9:15Well, we can get cynical, I think.
- 9:16We can say, oh, sure, Paul.
- 9:18But you're fundraising, right?
- 9:19You know, of course, you want to tell
- 9:21people that there's joy on the other side
- 9:22of generosity so that they give you more
- 9:24money.
- 9:24And then you can give it to, you
- 9:25know, the saints of Jerusalem.
- 9:28So one reason that we might have a
- 9:30hard time believing about the joy of generosity
- 9:32is we might be cynical about the person
- 9:33who's asking us to give.
- 9:35Even me right now.
- 9:36It's like, I have a ministry, people give
- 9:37to my ministry, am I talking about generosity
- 9:40just so I can get people like you
- 9:41to give more money to my ministry?
- 9:43This is a genuine concern that people have.
- 9:46Another reason that I think it's hard is
- 9:48that people get confused about how money leads
- 9:52to joy, right?
- 9:54So let's think about what do people who
- 9:57have a lot of money tend to spend
- 9:58it on?
- 9:59Sometimes they spend it on luxuries, right?
- 10:02Extravagant trips, cars, homes that are much larger
- 10:06than they need, fancy jewelry, expensive clothes, right?
- 10:11These material things.
- 10:12There's kind of this question, right, which is
- 10:14almost like, how can I indulge?
- 10:17If I've got extra money, how can I
- 10:18indulge?
- 10:19What are the luxuries that I can get?
- 10:20And that will give me joy in my
- 10:22life.
- 10:24Or sometimes the lifestyle, it isn't limited to
- 10:26the material aspect of enjoyable experiences, but also
- 10:31the social aspect of being able to impress
- 10:33people.
- 10:34So I went on a sailboat owner's message
- 10:38board to explore this a little bit.
- 10:40And this is tongue in cheek, but it's
- 10:42a writer who's talking about what it's like
- 10:44to own a yacht.
- 10:46And he says, here are some reasons to
- 10:48buy a yacht.
- 10:49To achieve status.
- 10:52Money alone cannot convey status.
- 10:53Come to think of it, a yacht alone
- 10:55does not grant status.
- 10:56Better buy two yachts.
- 10:58To show your riches.
- 10:59If you aren't rich enough to afford a
- 11:01yacht, be richer.
- 11:03And then I like this final one he
- 11:04adds.
- 11:05To command the crew aboard your yacht.
- 11:07After all, this may be the closest you'll
- 11:08ever come to your dream of being a
- 11:10pirate.
- 11:11Actually that one seems the most fun to
- 11:13me.
- 11:13Like, yeah, piratical whimsy, that's a good reason.
- 11:16That's better than just trying to have status
- 11:18and show off, right?
- 11:19But we know that this is part of
- 11:21it, right?
- 11:22Sometimes the reason people are buying the car
- 11:24or the boat or the house, it's not
- 11:26just because they think they're going to enjoy
- 11:27it a lot.
- 11:28It's because they want to impress others.
- 11:30They want the kind of social cachet that
- 11:32comes from those kind of demonstrations of wealth.
- 11:38And people think, okay, that will lead to
- 11:39joy, right?
- 11:41Luxury will lead to joy.
- 11:42An impressive lifestyle will lead to joy.
- 11:46But does it?
- 11:47Does it really?
- 11:48Obviously, there's a level at which it must,
- 11:50right?
- 11:50Like, people have fun doing those things.
- 11:52Yes, okay, there's some little measure of joy
- 11:55that they can get out of them.
- 11:56But how durable is it, right?
- 11:59And that's what I love about this tongue
- 12:00-in-cheek thing about like, hey, you know,
- 12:02one yacht isn't enough, better buy two.
- 12:04But if one yacht isn't enough, will two
- 12:06yachts be enough?
- 12:07Will three?
- 12:08Will four?
- 12:08And you see this in the lives of
- 12:10people who try and extract a sense of
- 12:13satisfaction out of material things is that it's
- 12:15never enough.
- 12:16It's never enough.
- 12:17It's actually the interior freedom of saying, I
- 12:21have enough.
- 12:22I don't need that luxury.
- 12:24I don't need that lifestyle that leads to
- 12:27contentment.
- 12:28And so a more durable route to joy
- 12:32where our money is concerned, I would posit
- 12:34is generosity.
- 12:36Using our money for the good of other
- 12:38people.
- 12:39Deploying it, right?
- 12:40And again, this can be literally giving it
- 12:42away.
- 12:42It could be investing in ventures that really
- 12:44matter.
- 12:45It could be stewarding things that we're spending
- 12:48money on that matter, that serve other people.
- 12:50There's different forms that this takes.
- 12:51But the most basic form and the most
- 12:53freeing in a way is to simply give
- 12:55your money away because then you don't have
- 12:56control of it anymore.
- 12:58You're just saying, I'm free.
- 12:59I don't need this.
- 13:00I can give it away.
- 13:02And again, that is a reflection of an
- 13:04interior quality where you're trusting that God will
- 13:08provide for you.
- 13:10And that God has already provided you in
- 13:13the most important way.
- 13:14And this is what Paul gets to in
- 13:15that verse nine, which I read, which is
- 13:16kind of like, hey, okay, as we're maybe
- 13:19cynical or we're thinking about, okay, but I
- 13:22could have more material things or I could
- 13:24have a more socially impressive life.
- 13:25Right?
- 13:26We're looking for joy in these different places.
- 13:28What do we see that God has already
- 13:31done for us?
- 13:32For you know the grace of our Lord
- 13:34Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet
- 13:36for your sake, he became poor.
- 13:39So through his poverty, you might become rich.
- 13:44Paul's saying Jesus was enjoying the best lifestyle
- 13:46there was before the incarnation, right?
- 13:49Eternal bliss in the communion of father, son,
- 13:51and Holy Spirit and the blessed Trinity.
- 13:52And yet he chose to become incarnate in
- 13:55literal human poverty in order to save us.
- 13:58And that salvation that he gives us, that's
- 14:00true wealth.
- 14:02Again, regardless of our lifestyle or how materially
- 14:05wealthy we are, we become rich through Jesus's
- 14:08decision to become poor because we receive the
- 14:11goodness of God in our hearts in a
- 14:13durable way.
- 14:14And of course, within the bigger context of
- 14:16eternity in a way that's much, much more
- 14:18valuable than any present pleasure or status that
- 14:21we might enjoy.
- 14:23So that's the kind of theological rationale for
- 14:26giving is that God has already given abundantly
- 14:30to us in Jesus Christ.
- 14:33And he's saying, and there's joy if you
- 14:36follow that pattern.
- 14:38Jesus, as Hebrews said, endured the cross for
- 14:41the joy set before him.
- 14:43Jesus, too, even in the sacrifices he was
- 14:46making in the incarnation was after joy.
- 14:50And so when we choose to sacrifice and
- 14:52we choose to give to others, we're actually
- 14:55doing the smartest thing we can do to
- 14:57experience the deepest kind of joy.
- 15:00So when you think about your work, when
- 15:02you're earning your paycheck and you're doing your
- 15:04monthly budget or however you do that, and
- 15:06you're thinking about how can I get the
- 15:08most joy out of this money?
- 15:09Give some of it away and see what
- 15:12God does.
- 15:15Lord Jesus, thank you that you became poor
- 15:18so that we might become rich.
- 15:21Guide our thinking about money, guide our feelings.
- 15:25Give us that capacity to trust that you
- 15:29have already given everything we need.
- 15:31And you'll continue to do that so we
- 15:33can be free.
- 15:34We can give away without worry, without anxiety,
- 15:37and with great joy.
- 15:39Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 15:41do our work with you.
- 15:42Amen.
- 15:47Thanks for listening.
