Latest / Dr Justin Coulson's Happy Families / #463 The Currency of Relationships
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families podcast. It's the podcast for the
- 0:07Speaker 1: time poor parent who.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Just on answers.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Now good everybody. This docs justin Colson flying solo because
- 0:13Speaker 1: sometimes it's just too hard to get Kylie and I
- 0:16Speaker 1: together to do the podcast together. Do you hear that
- 0:18Speaker 1: my voice cracked because I feel so I feel like
- 0:20Speaker 1: I'm letting the team down today. Just a really quick one,
- 0:24Speaker 1: because sometimes we don't need a fifteen minute podcast to
- 0:28Speaker 1: remind us of what matters. Just like dollars, the currency
- 0:32Speaker 1: of our economy, connection is the currency of our relationships.
- 0:37Speaker 1: When you have a relationship that has connection, you have
- 0:40Speaker 1: a relationship that has life. A relationship with no connection
- 0:43Speaker 1: is a relationship that really is either dead or dying.
- 0:47Speaker 1: We've all had that experience with somebody that matters to us.
- 0:50Speaker 1: We love them, we try our best to connect, but
- 0:52Speaker 1: instead we misconnect. And the longer the misconnections occur, the
- 0:55Speaker 1: more anxiety we feel around the relationship, and the more
- 0:58Speaker 1: the relationship suffers. And I can't tell you how many
- 1:01Speaker 1: times I've had this conversation with parents. The parent will say,
- 1:04Speaker 1: I'm really really struggling with my child. They're driving me crazy.
- 1:08Speaker 1: So I'll say well, tell me about the last time
- 1:10Speaker 1: that you really spent some good quality time with them.
- 1:13Speaker 1: No eruptions, no correction and direction, just good time together,
- 1:17Speaker 1: a walk in the park, a camping trip, that kind
- 1:19Speaker 1: of thing, and the parent will usually say something like
- 1:21Speaker 1: uh a while kids spell love t im e and
- 1:29Speaker 1: so I'll say to them, spend some time connecting. Email me,
- 1:33Speaker 1: let me know how it goes. And within a pretty
- 1:35Speaker 1: short time I usually receive an update and it goes
- 1:38Speaker 1: something like this, Hi, justin we spent some time together.
- 1:42Speaker 1: It made such a difference. I feel like our relationship
- 1:44Speaker 1: is alive again. So does this work every time? Well,
- 1:47Speaker 1: of course not. Parenting isn't that simple, but sometimes it
- 1:50Speaker 1: actually is. So try it this week. Focus on time together,
- 1:55Speaker 1: drop the agenda and help your children feel like they matter.
- 1:59Speaker 1: And then let me know what happens right after the
- 2:01Speaker 1: break and update on some cool stuff happening. At Happy Families,
- 2:04Speaker 1: it's their Happy Families podcast.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Our Screens Creating Tension at Home Betweens, Teens and Screens
- 2:11Speaker 2: is a webinar to guide families to healthy, safe superscreen solutions.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Bye today at Happy Families dot com, dot au slash shop.
- 2:21Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families Podcast, the podcast for the time
- 2:23Speaker 1: poor parent who just wants answers. Now it's doctor Justin
- 2:26Speaker 1: Coulson here, flying solo without Kylie, who is in the
- 2:29Speaker 1: middle of navigating our ongoing moving saga. Our house is
- 2:33Speaker 1: finally on the market. In case you're wondering, can I
- 2:36Speaker 1: be that personal with you? Our house is finally on
- 2:38Speaker 1: the market. If you're looking to live in the southern
- 2:40Speaker 1: Brisbane suburb of Cornubia, we'd be really happy for you
- 2:44Speaker 1: to buy our house we can finalize our move to
- 2:47Speaker 1: the coast. Kylie is still living in an airbnb and
- 2:51Speaker 1: doing her best to help the children to feel settled
- 2:54Speaker 1: when it isn't really working so well. I mean, the
- 2:57Speaker 1: kids just they want stability and it's really tough to
- 3:01Speaker 1: not have that. The reason that I wanted to continue
- 3:03Speaker 1: the podcast just briefly is because on the twenty fourth
- 3:05Speaker 1: of March, I've got a free webinar coming up called
- 3:06Speaker 1: can We Please Talk about Our Boys? In the first
- 3:09Speaker 1: part of this conversation this podcast today, I've talked about
- 3:11Speaker 1: the importance of connection and it is so important, but
- 3:14Speaker 1: the reality is raising boys is really complicated in today's world.
- 3:17Speaker 1: We've got an ever changing view of what masculinity is
- 3:21Speaker 1: and what it should be, particularly due to great things
- 3:25Speaker 1: like the Me Too movement, but also the ongoing challenging
- 3:29Speaker 1: conversation around consent, issues of privilege and so on. And
- 3:34Speaker 1: some people are saying, well, we should be talking to
- 3:36Speaker 1: our girls about this stuff as well as our boys.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I would agree with that, but the conversations need to
- 3:40Speaker 1: be different because our boys experience these things in ways
- 3:43Speaker 1: that are different to our girls. So we're going to
- 3:46Speaker 1: unpack all of this in a free webinar on Thursday
- 3:48Speaker 1: of next week, Thursday March the twenty fourth, at today
- 3:51Speaker 1: o'clock New South Wales, Victoria time, seven o'clock Queensland time.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Anywhere else you might be check your local guides and
- 3:58Speaker 1: here's the good news. If you've got boys and you'd
- 4:00Speaker 1: like to participate, being there in attendance live will be
- 4:05Speaker 1: best because you can ask your questions and enjoy the interaction.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But we will be giving you access to the free
- 4:10Speaker 1: webinar as a recording for seven days following the free webinar,
- 4:15Speaker 1: So can we please talk about boys? That's on Thursday,
- 4:18Speaker 1: the twenty fourth of March at eight pm New South Wales,
- 4:20Speaker 1: Victoria seven pm Queensland and a seven day recording is included,
- 4:24Speaker 1: plus a cheat sheet so that you've got a whole
- 4:26Speaker 1: lot of extra info to lean on and think about
- 4:29Speaker 1: what's going on thirty forty minutes something around that can't
- 4:32Speaker 1: wait to share it with you. Please visit happyfamilies dot
- 4:34Speaker 1: com dot you for all the details. Hey, thanks for
- 4:37Speaker 1: listening today's podcast. I hope it's been helpful and that
- 4:39Speaker 1: you get some connection time in because connection really is
