- 0:00Speaker 1: I want to go over some NFL matchups, and I'll
- 0:04get to that in a moment. But there was something else
- 0:06I wanted to get to. We were talking about Troy
- 0:09Aikman being able to working as an analyst for ESPN
- 0:18feel free to lower the moom and criticize any team,
- 0:23including his former team, the Dallas Cowboys. There was an
- 0:26interesting story today on The Athletic from Richard Ditch, who
- 0:30writes a lot of TV column stuff, and the headline is,
- 0:36and it'll put an impression in your mind, the headline
- 0:41is Tom Brady's juggling act as Raiders owner and TV
- 0:46analyst feels unsustainable for Fox.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:52Speaker 1: He starts off by talking about Troy Aikman. Of all
- 0:55he said, or Aikman said, I don't like to call
- 0:58at all. Was a Monday Night game with the Bills
- 1:01Jets of roughing the passer, call that sort of thing,
- 1:04and after an on field explanation of the call, Russell Yurik,
- 1:09a former NFL Vice President of Instant Replay and Administration,
- 1:14now the rules analysts from Monday Night Football said Troy,
- 1:18the reason why they called it in this situation is
- 1:21because he does land with most or all of his
- 1:25body weight. It looks like he does try to get
- 1:27one hand of the side, but obviously the referee felt
- 1:30that he didn't make enough of an attempt to brace it,
- 1:32said Aikman, even more exasperated.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I got it. I don't like it.
- 1:39Speaker 1: So there were lots of flags. Aigman said it felt
- 1:42like a preseason game, and he said watching Akeman on Monday,
- 1:46he and play by play announcer Joe Buck have been
- 1:49sensational this season. He didn't sugarcoat talking about the officials.
- 1:53Aikman praised lead official Adrian Hill's crew when they correctly
- 1:57identified penalties. He provided criticism when he thought they missed something.
- 2:01He was unfiltered. He pulled no punches, and he kept
- 2:03the implicit agreement a sports television analyst is supposed to
- 2:08have with the audience, be faithful to what you see,
- 2:13which brings us to Tom Brady. On Tuesday of this week,
- 2:19NFL team owners voted unanimously to grant Brady part ownership
- 2:24of the Las Vegas Raiders. Brady and Tom Wagner, the
- 2:27co founder of Knighthead Capital Management, are believed to have
- 2:30purchased approximately ten percent of the Raiders. If Brady was
- 2:34merely a Hall of Famer to be extending his connection
- 2:36with the NFL through ownership, it would be a story,
- 2:38but not one with implications for those watching the product. Brady,
- 2:42as the sports world knows, debuted in Septembers, Fox's number
- 2:45one NFL analyst this season, alongside play by playvoice Kevin Burkhardt.
- 2:50Fox has the broadcast rights to the Super Bowl this year,
- 2:53which means Brady will call the league's most important game.
- 2:56He has six games into a ten year, three one
- 3:00hundred seventy five million dollars deal with Fox Corporation. How
- 3:05can someone broadcast games while having a significant ownership stake
- 3:08in a franchise. Well, the NFL places restrictions on Brady
- 3:12before the season, including that he's not allowed access to
- 3:15other teams facilities and practices, and cannot attend broadcast production meetings.
- 3:20But here's the big one for this column's purposes. As
- 3:23an owner, Brady is also not allowed to publicly criticize
- 3:27officials or other teams, and could be fined or suspended
- 3:31if the league feels he breaks that policy. Roger Goodell
- 3:35was quoted as saying, quote, Tom's been abiding by the
- 3:38issues that we've raised in the committee voluntarily since he
- 3:40began broadcasting. So that's all been resolved. It's been followed
- 3:43very clearly, and everyone seems to be satisfied with that.
- 3:46The NFL confirmed the same Wednesday this week. There have
- 3:50been no issues and Tom has been a wonderful edition
- 3:52at NFL broadcasts at a league spokes person. So that's
- 3:56the league perspective, says Richard Deatch, But what about viewers.
- 4:00There's an implicit agreement between those who broadcast games and
- 4:03the audience. We work for you, the viewer. Now, we
- 4:06also live.
- 4:06Speaker 2: In the real world.
- 4:08Speaker 1: And there have long been conflicts of interest in sports
- 4:10media jobs, no further than professional tennis, where coaches also
- 4:14serve as on air analysts, but pre determined restrictions on
- 4:18what you can say leave no work around. The league
- 4:21has told a number one NFL analyst there is a
- 4:23limit to what he can say as part of the
- 4:25NFL's constitution and bylaws. Think about what would happen if
- 4:29there's a blown call that costs someone the Super Bowl.
- 4:32Maybe Brady would ignore the restrictions and just.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Go off on the officials. Maybe you pull some punches.
- 4:37Speaker 1: The point is the restriction changes everything asked how Fox
- 4:41Sports viewed the broadcasting restraints for Brady and how they
- 4:44viewed Brady potentially being assigned Las Vegas games. Fox Sports
- 4:48declined comment because it's important to note Brady getting approved
- 4:53Tuesday does not change anything for Fox Sports. They've been
- 4:56working under these guidelines since the start of the season,
- 4:58and Fox Sports is pleased with Radies development works.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Next.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Assimon is Che's forty nine Ers this Sunday. So anyway,
- 5:05it goes on and on about this kind of stuff,
- 5:09let me just say this. I think there's the potential
- 5:13maybe for something like that happening simply because he's the
- 5:18number one analyst on the team working with Burkhart, and
- 5:24he'll get to call Super Bowl, and he'll call playoff games,
- 5:26He'll call.
- 5:26Speaker 2: All the games.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I don't think he's going to be on a Raiders
- 5:32game this year that, first of all, the Raiders aren't
- 5:36good enough to draw the lead game. I don't think.
- 5:39Put it this way, he's not on the Raiders Rams
- 5:41game this Sunday in Los Angeles.
- 5:47Speaker 2: He's I don't think he'll be on that.
- 5:51Speaker 1: But does it present the possibility of a compromising situation
- 5:58or impropriety?
- 5:59Speaker 2: Eh?
- 6:00Speaker 1: Maybe, I think that's kind of a deep dive, which
- 6:04Richard each does. He does a good job in his column.
- 6:07I'm certainly not criticizing in the column. I'm just saying.
- 6:10Speaker 2: You kind of have to go a.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Ways to get to perhaps get to that point to
- 6:16see that.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Well, when the Raiders hire Belichick next season.
- 6:21Speaker 1: That I've read that the other day, could we be
- 6:23living in a world where Tom Brady hires Bill Belichick?
- 6:26Speaker 2: And again, that's another thing.
- 6:28Speaker 1: He owns ten percent, you know, Mark Davis is still
- 6:32he's still the one majority.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Ten percent stake. What might affect his judgment on something? Eh,
- 6:40maybe I doubt it, But again I think it's kind
- 6:44of a mood point because the Raiders are not good.
- 6:47Speaker 4: I don't think it's going to affect his judgment. Craig Boat,
- 6:50What it does worry means that as an analyst and
- 6:52as a broadcaster, we both know that a lot of
- 6:54the prep work goes into watching film, talking with coaches
- 6:58with players, understand ending what they're trying to do on
- 7:02the field and in the game, and he has such
- 7:06limited access now because of his stake in the team,
- 7:09that I feel like it's gonna make him a worse
- 7:11broadcaster and he you know, I don't He's been okay
- 7:14this year.
- 7:15Speaker 3: A lot of people have not liked him.
- 7:16Speaker 4: But if you were ranking the analyst right now, he's
- 7:20probably close to the bond than he is the top.
- 7:22And I think for him to be able to grow,
- 7:24not having this access is only going to hurt him.
- 7:27And I'm really curious how long he'll stay as a broadcaster,
- 7:32as a as a color analyst, right I would not
- 7:34be surprised Craig in the future he ends up moving
- 7:37out of the booth and ends up working on a
- 7:39pregame show or kind of just does what Belichick's been
- 7:42doing instead of being the color analyst on the broadcast.
- 7:46Speaker 1: But we'll see, kind of hard to walk away from
- 7:48thirty seven and a half million bucks a year. Yeah,
- 7:51ten year deal at three hundred and seventy five million dollars.
- 7:54But to your point, it's gonna be the NFL is
- 7:58going to watch it closely. I think I think that's
- 8:00for sure. They're gonna watch it very very closely. On this,
- 8:04I think he's done okay, doesn't seem comfortable. I think
- 8:09he's still trying to get there. And some analysts it
- 8:12takes a little time. I don't think Troy Aikman was
- 8:14great when he started. I think he was a little
- 8:16stilted when he started, but he got better. Tony Romo,
- 8:21in many folks Esmay's just the opposite started great now.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I think Romo's in.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Better this year. I think Brady coming in kind of.
- 8:28I think he coasted in years two and three because
- 8:30of how good he was in year one. And I
- 8:32think Aikman's gotten so much better because of Romo coming
- 8:35in and lighting it up.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I think it's made all these broadcasters better.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so we'll take a look at some NFL.
- 8:44In fact, let's do.
- 8:44Speaker 2: That right now. We'll bring the coach sark audio in it.
- 8:48Speaker 1: All right, since so much since we mentioned that, I'm
- 8:51just gonna start throwing games at you like I do
- 8:52every week and get your thoughts on it. Let's start
- 8:55with Tom Brady's Vegas Raiders. They play the Rams. The
- 8:59Raiders are two and four. The Rams are one and
- 9:01four as they play, and the Rams are a seven
- 9:06point favorite, aren't they really?
- 9:08Speaker 2: That's bright happen? How did that happen? Okay?
- 9:13Speaker 3: Hey, is Cooper Cup gonna be back for this game.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I don't think, so okay, and you know, uh, that's
- 9:20that's the game, the possibility of I'm not I'm not hoping.
- 9:27I'm not wishing for Joni Mitchell's concert to get canceled
- 9:30at the Hollywood Bowl Sunday night when Linda and I
- 9:32have tickets. That's right in La Sunday night. But if
- 9:35it does this Sunday, yeah, yeah, So we got the
- 9:38game Saturday and Sunday morning, we're falling out to LA.
- 9:41When you come back red eye Oh wow, land at
- 9:44eight o'clock Monday morning.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gonna be difficult here.
- 9:51Speaker 3: If you've got to come the Starks press conference on Monday.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's why I'm taking the Red Eye. I
- 9:56can be there in time for the presser. So yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 1: But if for whatever reason, the concertgate because she's had
- 10:03to cancel some shows due to health concern she's not canceled.
- 10:06Speaker 2: So we're still playing on the show.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And I told Linda, you know, so this should dedicate
- 10:12show you my dedication to us in our marriage. If
- 10:14the Dodgers have a game six, really hoping the Dodgers
- 10:18wrap this thing up today, so.
- 10:19Speaker 2: That's not even an issue.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Short and Rams are playing a home game, but we
- 10:26have tickets for the concert. Joni Mitchell was an iconic legend.
- 10:30I want to see her as well, So that's the
- 10:32plan on anyway. Okay, Patriots Jaguars, well, first of all, Rams, Raiders.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Snoozer? Okay, am I packing this game? I think Rams? Okay,
- 10:43just because of the weapons.
- 10:44Speaker 2: I agree with you. It's a snoozer. Yeah, okay, all right?
- 10:46Speaker 1: Uh Patriots and Jaguars. Speaking of snoozers, a pair of
- 10:50one in.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Fives London game, Yeah in the morning. This was one
- 10:54that you maybe just want to sleep through.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe don't even wake up for this team.
- 10:57Speaker 4: Certainly will fun to see what Drake may looks like.
- 11:00If the Jaguars lose this game to the one in
- 11:03five New England Patriots, Doug Peterson will not be the
- 11:06head coach in the week eight.
- 11:08Speaker 1: That's the predicul most okay, here's one that intrigues me.
- 11:12Seahawks at three and three at the Falcons.
- 11:14Speaker 3: This should be fun.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Seattle still has been banged up injury wise, you know,
- 11:18Byron Murphy. He's been out the last couple of weeks.
- 11:21You know, struggled against San Francisco, struggled. I think they
- 11:24lost the Giants right somehow in Atlanta seems to be
- 11:27uh kind of finding themselves offensively. Bijon had had a
- 11:31great game last week against Carolina. Give me Atlanta, Okay,
- 11:35we'll skip Titans at Bills, Yeah, thank you, thank you.
- 11:39First game for Marik Cooper.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Yeah, Bengals at Browns.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Speaking of Marik Cooper, another one that.
- 11:48Speaker 4: You know how and all these commercials now radio TV,
- 11:53we're kind of we're getting Snoop Dog shoved down. I
- 11:57like Snoop, you know, maybe it's a little bit too much.
- 12:00Kind of the same thing with the Kelsey brothers. Why
- 12:02are we still getting the Shawn Watson shoved down our throats?
- 12:05Jimmy has them? What are we doing here? We gotta
- 12:08stop this. Must win for Cincinnati.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah, here's one of really like Texans at Packers.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Yeah, this would be a lot of fun. Two teams
- 12:15with two explosive offenses. Still no Nico Collins for Houston.
- 12:19But this is probably I think right there with Detroit
- 12:23in Minnesota for well, actually, sorry, there's Kansas City. Man,
- 12:26what a Sunday actually thinking about? This is one that
- 12:28won't get as much recognition as Detroit, Minnesota in Kansas
- 12:32City and San Francisco.
- 12:35Speaker 3: This may be the game of the day.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Okay, Dolphins Colts. Dolphin's Tyler Huntley's third start of the year,
- 12:40and the Colts got Anthony richardson back.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Yeah gonna, I'm gonna skip through this one.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Well we'll move forward to that Lions
- 12:48at Vikings four and one, Lions five and the Vikings
- 12:51early window noon game.
- 12:53Speaker 4: No Aiden Hutchinson of course for Detroit, So how does
- 12:56their defense look without him?
- 12:57Speaker 3: His his passing?
- 13:01Speaker 4: What is it like rushing the passer rate on the
- 13:03term I just butched it. But the twenty four percent
- 13:06the highest mark for defensive ends since Michael Parsons of
- 13:08last year in terms of putting pressure on the quarterback.
- 13:11Speaker 3: It's a big loss for Detroit.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Meanwhile, Minnesota has one of the best defenses in the league.
- 13:15Speaker 3: This will be fun.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Line is my Minnesota minus one and a half? I
- 13:19don't know which way they go with this one.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Okay, Eagles are three and two, Giants are.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Two in helping helping Giants win that one.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Yeah, Panthers are one and five. Commanders are four and two.
- 13:31Speaker 2: They lost last week. Could we see the Commanders be
- 13:33five and two.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Could I mean, there's a good chance, you know, Carolina,
- 13:38but they do get Jonathan Brooks back.
- 13:40Speaker 3: So do have a rooting interest in this one?
- 13:42Speaker 4: Are more of a watching interest to see how does
- 13:45Jonathan Brooks look in his first game back since of
- 13:47course the ACL injury last year?
- 13:49Speaker 1: All right, how about the headliner in the late window
- 13:52five and oh Chiefs three and three, forty nine Ers
- 13:54in Santa.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Clara rematch of last year a super Bowl. But San
- 13:57Francisco has been you know, beaten up with the Debelle
- 14:00Samuel is questionable this week. Jordan Mason is questionable. Got
- 14:05a feeling Kansas City improves a six to zero after
- 14:08this week despite all the injuries that they seem to
- 14:11be just rolling right now.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Sunday night game if you care. Jets Steelers Russell Wilson.
- 14:17Speaker 4: It looks like it's going to be his first start
- 14:19in the Pittsburgh Steeler uniform, Defonte Adams first game in
- 14:23the Jets uniforms. So at least we have the Rogers
- 14:27Defonte Adams connection to see how that looks like.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Go the Jets here.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Then you've got Ravens Bucks, Chargers, Cardinals in the Monday
- 14:39Night double.
- 14:39Speaker 4: Hitter Baltimore, who I think is the best team in
- 14:42the league right now against the Buccaneers team that is
- 14:45foreign two.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I think the record.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Suggest they're a little bit better than they really are.
- 14:50Like Baltimore and then Chargers Cardinals mean coach Harbaugh who
- 14:54left the game because of a fib yeah, comes back,
- 14:57Jesse Mintter we took over as acting head coach. Rogers
- 15:00have one of the best defenses in the league, gotta
- 15:03fill They gonna find a way to shut down Kaala
- 15:05Murray and the Cardinals.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Coming up, we'll hear from Logorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian
- 15:09here on sports Radio AAM thirteen under the zone of
- 15:10the iHeartRadio app.
