- 0:00Speaker 1: A word of warning. This podcast explores graphic and disturbing
- 0:03Speaker 1: stories and includes some strong language. It therefore may not
- 0:07Speaker 1: be suitable for our young listeners or other folks who
- 0:11Speaker 1: may find it disturbing. Hello and welcome to True Crime Music,
- 0:14Speaker 1: the podcast covering high profile and under the radar cases
- 0:17Speaker 1: from across the country. Every week. I'm your host, Anna Garcia.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Our case this week, the video on the baby monitor
- 0:26Speaker 1: is as chilling as it gets. A man walks into
- 0:28Speaker 1: the bedroom where there are two four year old boys,
- 0:31Speaker 1: twins who are sleeping, and he grabs one of them
- 0:35Speaker 1: and he runs. That boy will be found stabbed to
- 0:38Speaker 1: death in the middle of the street, discarded like trash
- 0:42Speaker 1: eight blocks away. But that's not all. The man comes
- 0:46Speaker 1: back after sunrise for the other twin, but he's spooked
- 0:51Speaker 1: by something, so he runs off without the child. And
- 0:54Speaker 1: can you believe that he committed these crimes while wearing
- 0:58Speaker 1: an ankle monitor for another offense. We're recording this on Friday,
- 1:03Speaker 1: October tenth of twenty twenty five. Our guest today is
- 1:06Speaker 1: Don Tebek, a retired homicide detective from Los Angeles and
- 1:11Speaker 1: a private investigator. Don is also a consultant that you
- 1:14Speaker 1: can catch on multiple television networks, but most of all,
- 1:18Speaker 1: Don is a fan favorite on the podcast because he
- 1:21Speaker 1: has no filter. You all asked us to bring him back,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and so here he is. Here's Don.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Here, I am in Living Proof, amped up again, and
- 1:31Speaker 2: I appreciate it. I haven't been amped up like this
- 1:33Speaker 2: in a few weeks. So it's a I didn't know
- 1:35Speaker 2: about this case until you said it to me, and
- 1:37Speaker 2: thank you for having me back.
- 1:39Speaker 3: It's really an honor, So thank you.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Oh it's a pleasure. It is a pleasure everyone asked.
- 1:44Speaker 1: The comments on YouTube were off the charts. Everyone's like,
- 1:47Speaker 1: you got to bring Don back. I got to bring
- 1:49Speaker 1: him back. And there were a few of them who
- 1:51Speaker 1: called you like Grandpa from snl.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Oh no no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no no. That
- 1:57Speaker 3: was tame to what I was. So yeah, Don.
- 2:00Speaker 1: This is a case that we covered originally on the
- 2:03Speaker 1: podcast when it first happened, the murder of this four
- 2:06Speaker 1: year old boy, and we were horrified, horrified by the
- 2:11Speaker 1: details of it. And now that we have some conclusion
- 2:16Speaker 1: to this, some very insufficient, tiny justice, we want to
- 2:22Speaker 1: tell the rest of the story. It's unbelievable, it truly.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Is, and not that the mistakes were made, just by
- 2:30Speaker 2: the outcome of what happened and how the district attorney
- 2:36Speaker 2: how they could plead him out. This isn't a case
- 2:38Speaker 2: and at least that I read and really is not
- 2:42Speaker 2: a case about they didn't have enough evidence and we
- 2:45Speaker 2: have to plead him out to something so we can
- 2:47Speaker 2: keep them in. This is absolutely abominable. This is unbelievable
- 2:51Speaker 2: that they would complete him out and to plead him
- 2:54Speaker 2: out to life without elwop with his life without the
- 2:56Speaker 2: possibility of parole.
- 2:58Speaker 3: And I get it, okay, so.
- 3:00Speaker 1: He has the possibility of parole, That's what I'm saying.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Problem, Oh sorry, it should have been up without the
- 3:06Speaker 2: possibility of parole, and it's not. And the mere fact
- 3:09Speaker 2: that I just had a guy that we talked about
- 3:12Speaker 2: a case of mind of just an absolute nightmare of
- 3:15Speaker 2: a young woman who just got out of jail after
- 3:17Speaker 2: thirty years because they feels he's rehabilitated and this piece
- 3:20Speaker 2: of shit that neither of these people should ever see
- 3:23Speaker 2: the light of date and because of what he did
- 3:26Speaker 2: we were talking about on cash to take that little
- 3:29Speaker 2: boy break into a home and I don't know, and
- 3:32Speaker 2: I don't give a shit. Really, and what prompted him
- 3:36Speaker 2: to do this? Oh he was he was hearing voices. Well,
- 3:38Speaker 2: you know what, he's gonna hear voices and should hear
- 3:40Speaker 2: voices in a prison cell for the rest of his life.
- 3:43Speaker 2: And I hope he gets help. I don't want anybody
- 3:45Speaker 2: with demons. But you know, if this guy and this
- 3:48Speaker 2: case and what they did to that parents of this
- 3:51Speaker 2: little boy, and I don't care what the circumstances were,
- 3:54Speaker 2: as far as you know, divorced parents are not, this
- 3:57Speaker 2: man committed the ultimate sin.
- 3:58Speaker 3: And I have no reverence for this man.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I have nothing but hate for this man and what
- 4:04Speaker 2: he did to that child. And thank God he didn't
- 4:06Speaker 2: go back for the other or take the other child.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I know, by the grace of God, By the grace
- 4:11Speaker 1: of God, he did not get that second child because
- 4:13Speaker 1: he was standing there. He was standing there playing with
- 4:16Speaker 1: the blanket. It was all caught on the baby monitor.
- 4:18Speaker 1: That's the extraordinary thing. But here's the thing, all of us,
- 4:21Speaker 1: as parents, and even if you're not a parent, a
- 4:23Speaker 1: monitor is just that, it's a monitor. If you're not
- 4:27Speaker 1: watching the monitor, you can't write, you can't intercede if
- 4:32Speaker 1: there's a problem. Now, This case is out of Texas,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and we covered it when it happened in twenty twenty one. Now,
- 4:40Speaker 1: finally four years later, if you can imagine, we're closer
- 4:43Speaker 1: to justice. He made this deal literally while they were
- 4:46Speaker 1: about to start trial, meaning jury selection. And the reason
- 4:50Speaker 1: this case took four years to even get to this
- 4:52Speaker 1: point is because he was declared mentally incompetent, unfit to
- 4:56Speaker 1: stand trial for a very long time, and his attorney
- 5:00Speaker 1: says that he suffers from schizophrenia. Look, I believe that
- 5:03Speaker 1: he's mentally ill, there's no question about that. But he's
- 5:05Speaker 1: also evil. I'm sorry, there's evilness here, and it took
- 5:11Speaker 1: this long to get his competency back in order to
- 5:15Speaker 1: stand trial. And then all of a sudden boom, he
- 5:18Speaker 1: makes the deal, and the deal really just saves him
- 5:20Speaker 1: the death penalty. He was going to get convicted, even
- 5:23Speaker 1: his attorney said after the deal was announced, he said
- 5:26Speaker 1: he was going to get convicted. We had no way
- 5:28Speaker 1: out of this one because they found not he's on
- 5:33Speaker 1: the baby monitor, he's on the video. He looks exactly
- 5:36Speaker 1: like him. It's not like you can claim it's not him.
- 5:39Speaker 1: He turns, you see his face in the monitor. It's
- 5:42Speaker 1: him plus the baby's blood. The baby's blood was found
- 5:46Speaker 1: on his clothing in his parents' house, clothes matching the
- 5:53Speaker 1: clothes scene in the bedroom video. He had no way out.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Of this one evidence. And again he didn't need the monitor.
- 6:02Speaker 2: The monitors just added to what he did and could
- 6:05Speaker 2: back that up. However, when you take the blood evidence
- 6:08Speaker 2: that he had on his clothing, on his hootie, on
- 6:11Speaker 2: his hat, and his hands on his shoes, and what
- 6:14Speaker 2: prompted them to take a plea from this animal, I
- 6:16Speaker 2: don't get it. And I understand about you know, he
- 6:19Speaker 2: heard voices and it took him four years where he
- 6:21Speaker 2: can stand the trial. The operative word here, Anna is
- 6:24Speaker 2: he was competent to stand trial. They had ample evidence,
- 6:29Speaker 2: ample evidence. This is they've probably had more evidence than
- 6:31Speaker 2: this one they did with Simpson, and they chose to
- 6:34Speaker 2: plead him out. I think it's such a travesty, and
- 6:36Speaker 2: it's a travesty not just a justice, but to the
- 6:38Speaker 2: parents and really to the little boy. And we speak
- 6:41Speaker 2: it's homicide, cops, we speak for that victim.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I object to the possibility of parol. For me, that's
- 6:48Speaker 1: an abomination. The man should never get out. If you're
- 6:50Speaker 1: going to spare him his life and his death penalty.
- 6:52Speaker 1: That should be the gift, the grace right there and
- 6:55Speaker 1: nothing more. However, on the flip side of this, I
- 6:59Speaker 1: would say, have we spared the family a tremendous amount
- 7:04Speaker 1: of trauma? Because trials are not easy, not easy on
- 7:09Speaker 1: the victims, because we are very focused on the rights
- 7:13Speaker 1: of the defendant, and that was going to be brutal.
- 7:17Speaker 1: So I asked that question, did we save the family
- 7:20Speaker 1: any more agony?
- 7:23Speaker 2: I'm not sure that we did, because eventually we have
- 7:25Speaker 2: to as a society look above the family. Granted, there's
- 7:29Speaker 2: going to be some absolute hord pictures that are going
- 7:31Speaker 2: to be shown, which, by the way, sidebar to this
- 7:35Speaker 2: they wanted to be. They thought, well, if they showed
- 7:37Speaker 2: the video, it's going to be inflaming. Oh, it will
- 7:40Speaker 2: prejudice a jury. We will not be able to get
- 7:43Speaker 2: excuse me nothing, get no, there's no more rules. Okay,
- 7:46Speaker 2: you were caught, you did it. You're going to prison.
- 7:49Speaker 2: There's stuff about you know. Oh, but he was sick
- 7:53Speaker 2: and I'm rehashing this, but the fact that he went
- 7:57Speaker 2: back shows an intent that this guy's evil. Right, Yes,
- 8:02Speaker 2: he didn't just and I had that child killing in
- 8:04Speaker 2: South Carolina, a four year little girl that was kidnapped
- 8:07Speaker 2: and taken by an ex boyfriend to get back at
- 8:09Speaker 2: the mother.
- 8:10Speaker 3: And this animal.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I mean, what he did to this little girl, you
- 8:14Speaker 2: know what, It's just it's beyond me because I don't
- 8:17Speaker 2: know how people can do this to a child.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:19Speaker 2: You may be mentally incapacity, but you're holding a child, right.
- 8:25Speaker 3: This isn't the devil. This is a little child you're.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Taking that you don't know. So no, he's confident he
- 8:33Speaker 2: had every intent in the world to take the other brother.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Thank god, I got, you know, scared off, and I
- 8:38Speaker 2: would love to talk to the DA and just find out,
- 8:41Speaker 2: like what caused you to plete him?
- 8:44Speaker 3: Like I said, you had.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Overwhelming amount of evidence, not even the video. I'm just
- 8:50Speaker 2: talking about solid scientific evidence that push this man at
- 8:55Speaker 2: the scene and makes him the killer.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't think there was any chance that a
- 8:59Speaker 1: jury was going to find him not guilty, and I
- 9:02Speaker 1: don't think that they were going to drop it to
- 9:03Speaker 1: a lesser charge either. When you see that he comes
- 9:06Speaker 1: back for the second child, I mean, there's just no way.
- 9:08Speaker 1: One of the things I've realized is that home security
- 9:11Speaker 1: isn't just about protecting things, it is about protecting people.
- 9:14Speaker 1: For me, it's my family, pets, even my car that
- 9:18Speaker 1: I want to feel safe. That's why I'm so excited

- 10:59Speaker 1: to the absolute dedas tails and name everybody here. The
- 11:01Speaker 1: confess killer is now twenty two years old, but when
- 11:04Speaker 1: this happened he was eighteen. He is Darien Brown, and
- 11:08Speaker 1: he stabbed four year old Cash Gurnon in May of
- 11:13Speaker 1: twenty twenty one. Cash was sleeping in a little crib
- 11:16Speaker 1: with his twin brother, Carter. And you know, I have
- 11:20Speaker 1: watched this video many times, and the Daily Email exclusively
- 11:24Speaker 1: got this video in addition to it being released by authorities.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And what is so sad for me is, you know,
- 11:31Speaker 1: because you watch little brother come in climb into the crib.
- 11:36Speaker 1: The two of them are kind of like squished in
- 11:39Speaker 1: there like two pieces of shrimp, is the way I
- 11:41Speaker 1: would describe it, you know, nestled like little two pieces
- 11:44Speaker 1: of shrimp. And then all of a sudden, at five
- 11:47Speaker 1: in the morning, this man comes in. He's got a
- 11:51Speaker 1: backpack on and he's standing there for the longest time,
- 11:55Speaker 1: staring at the children sleeping for the longest and then
- 11:58Speaker 1: you keep thinking it's like, well, what it's going to
- 12:00Speaker 1: happen next? And then he just grabs cash. I remember
- 12:04Speaker 1: he's four, so he's not a little baby. This is
- 12:07Speaker 1: a four year old, right, This is a nice sized child.
- 12:10Speaker 1: And you can see him running with the child outside
- 12:13Speaker 1: the house. He doesn't wake up the other twin. The
- 12:16Speaker 1: other twin continues to sleep. It's and you know what
- 12:20Speaker 1: is so sad as you watch the video and he
- 12:24Speaker 1: comes back after sunrise for the other one, he's staring
- 12:27Speaker 1: at him, gets spooked, runs out and when the when Carter,
- 12:33Speaker 1: the twin left behind, wakes up, the first thing he
- 12:35Speaker 1: does is he looks for his brother, and his brother's
- 12:38Speaker 1: not in the bed. So you see him climb out,
- 12:41Speaker 1: run and then come back and he's still looking for
- 12:43Speaker 1: his brother, like where is he? That moment I think
- 12:49Speaker 1: forever will halt that little child. Can you imagine that
- 12:52Speaker 1: moment that you're searching for your other half and your
- 12:55Speaker 1: other half has been taken in At this point, that
- 12:58Speaker 1: other half was dead.
- 13:01Speaker 2: One of the things that I learned, And it was funny.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I learned that after I left LAPD, I didn't know
- 13:07Speaker 2: how these murders, whether it be an adult or a child,
- 13:11Speaker 2: affect the family, and how it resonates out almost like
- 13:14Speaker 2: a drop in the water, and how the ripples just
- 13:16Speaker 2: go out until I handle that case where I assisted
- 13:19Speaker 2: in the South Carolina four year old little girl that
- 13:21Speaker 2: was kidnapped and presumed killed. They never got the baby back.
- 13:26Speaker 2: What again, I get now, is this reverberates Anna well
- 13:32Speaker 2: past the parent. It's that little boy, the surviving brother
- 13:37Speaker 2: who has an idea that his brother's not coming back.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Not to mention the mother and father, I don't care
- 13:42Speaker 2: whether there was something here about well, they were divorced
- 13:45Speaker 2: and all. I don't give a rats ask if these
- 13:47Speaker 2: people were living in a tree. That's still the mother
- 13:51Speaker 2: and father who will live with this the rest of
- 13:53Speaker 2: their life. And they're bigger than I am because they
- 13:57Speaker 2: can say, well, God or whatever they believe in, you know,
- 14:00Speaker 2: he'll be the final judge.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Well no, no, to me, he won't be the final judge.
- 14:04Speaker 2: It's going to be that either gas chamber or they'd
- 14:08Speaker 2: drop a pellet or now I think it's Georgia and
- 14:10Speaker 2: I was brought back to the firing squad. That's where
- 14:14Speaker 2: this ends, That's where this should end. That would give
- 14:16Speaker 2: me clothes. I got closure just because the guy was
- 14:18Speaker 2: convicted on my case. But I don't, like you said,
- 14:21Speaker 2: you know, how do they survive this? And that's something
- 14:25Speaker 2: I didn't know until again I started looking at what
- 14:28Speaker 2: it does to the entire family, you know, going past
- 14:31Speaker 2: the mother and father, and so this is just a numbo.
- 14:35Speaker 2: It's just it's absolutely a travesty of justice my opinion.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I think a lot of people feel that way.
- 14:42Speaker 1: You alluded there don to what was going on in
- 14:45Speaker 1: the family. So let's update everyone, even though we covered
- 14:48Speaker 1: this a few years ago, just so you can understand
- 14:50Speaker 1: where the kids were and then there was a huge
- 14:55Speaker 1: reaction and anger, specifically towards the father when this happened.
- 15:02Speaker 1: And it's a little complicated, but I think as Don
- 15:05Speaker 1: very aptly has expressed to us, no matter what, these
- 15:08Speaker 1: are the parents and they have lost them. But let's
- 15:10Speaker 1: explain it for everyone, and you all be the judge.
- 15:13Speaker 1: It is not for me to judge this here. All
- 15:15Speaker 1: I know is there is a baby boy who is
- 15:18Speaker 1: up in heaven right now, and his turn up in
- 15:21Speaker 1: heaven should have come decades later. Should have come decades later.
- 15:26Speaker 3: All right.
- 15:26Speaker 1: So the father in this case is Trevor Gernon, and
- 15:30Speaker 1: he was not home at the time, and the children
- 15:34Speaker 1: were staying with his ex girlfriend, okay, and he initially
- 15:40Speaker 1: said that he was taking off to find work, but
- 15:44Speaker 1: there was also a bench warrant for father Trevor for
- 15:48Speaker 1: failing to show up a court. He had some previous
- 15:50Speaker 1: drug charges, and the belief is that he took off
- 15:54Speaker 1: because there was a bench warrant out for him, and
- 15:57Speaker 1: he left the boys the home of his ex girlfriend
- 16:03Speaker 1: and she too had children. To complicate this, the mother,
- 16:07Speaker 1: the biological mother, had no idea, she says, where Trevor
- 16:12Speaker 1: had taken the twins, and the police said she had
- 16:16Speaker 1: been looking for them the whole time, which is heartbreaking, heartbreaking, heartbreaking,
- 16:24Speaker 1: I mean the I mean, I don't even know where
- 16:28Speaker 1: to begin here. I don't know where to begin here.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And the woman who is taking care of the twins,
- 16:34Speaker 1: the ex girlfriend, Monica Sharrod, who had the baby monitor
- 16:38Speaker 1: and provided the baby monitor to police. You know, she's
- 16:41Speaker 1: come under fire as well because people feel she reportedly
- 16:47Speaker 1: also has a history of some criminal charges regarding drugs.
- 16:53Speaker 1: These are everyone here might be flawed and has suffered.
- 16:59Speaker 1: That doesn't mean you know this, this is entirely their fault.
- 17:05Speaker 1: But many people blame the dad. A lot of you
- 17:08Speaker 1: and a lot of people in the area blame the
- 17:11Speaker 1: father for this. Blame the father and the poor mother.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I mean, she's a complete victim and everything. She's looking
- 17:16Speaker 1: for her babies. She doesn't know where her babies are.
- 17:20Speaker 1: And you know, the question is could could they have
- 17:25Speaker 1: done anything to prevent this? To prevent this guy? You
- 17:29Speaker 1: need to understand that Brown the killer here, he had
- 17:34Speaker 1: actually been stalking the neighborhood. He had actually attempted something
- 17:39Speaker 1: like this before with another family a few blocks away.
- 17:43Speaker 1: So the question is is it the family's fault? I
- 17:47Speaker 1: mean Brown, Darien Brown, he is the one who is
- 17:52Speaker 1: ultimately responsible for the death of this child. He is
- 17:55Speaker 1: the one to blame. But you know, we're there warning
- 17:59Speaker 1: sign yes, and I think we're going to get into them.
- 18:02Speaker 1: What do you think done?
- 18:03Speaker 2: I don't care if they were dope fiends, alcoholics. The
- 18:07Speaker 2: fact was that's that mother and father. We're not all perfect.
- 18:12Speaker 2: You're a mom I'm a dad, I have a grandson.
- 18:14Speaker 2: I watched my older son be a dad. And the
- 18:19Speaker 2: bottom line is they loved that child.
- 18:21Speaker 3: They didn't.
- 18:21Speaker 2: They did nothing, nothing to have that child kidnapped and murdered.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Nothing.
- 18:28Speaker 2: You talk about the monitor when I had my girand
- 18:31Speaker 2: we didn't have monitors.
- 18:32Speaker 3: My kids were babies and all.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Not that I'm that old, but I'm old, but we
- 18:38Speaker 2: had a monitor for my grandson and I just am
- 18:41Speaker 2: in tuned to that cry. So even with my wife
- 18:46Speaker 2: laying beside me, she didn't hear it. I got up
- 18:48Speaker 2: and went in there and whatever was going on. So
- 18:51Speaker 2: sometimes you hear it, sometimes you don't. It's not their fault.
- 18:55Speaker 2: There's no fault other than that dairy Lynne Brown. That's
- 18:58Speaker 2: the fault. And whether the father was good, bad and different,
- 19:01Speaker 2: and I get it, you know what, but he didn't
- 19:05Speaker 2: cause his kid to be murdered. The mother, the girlfriend, nobody.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Darian Brown killed that child. You didn't even know the
- 19:15Speaker 2: other people. I mean, if this was a big, vicious,
- 19:17Speaker 2: dope thing that took place and he was trying to
- 19:19Speaker 2: get back at him, I'd give it a little more credence.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Well, don apparently, so the ex girlfriend whose home this
- 19:33Speaker 1: was Monica Shard. She had several children of her own
- 19:36Speaker 1: and she had a teen child who was acquaintance friends
- 19:42Speaker 1: with Darien Brown, so he was known to the family.
- 19:45Speaker 1: He apparently had been in the home before because of
- 19:49Speaker 1: this connection to one of the teens in the home.
- 19:52Speaker 1: And my question would be did everyone know that he
- 19:56Speaker 1: was schizophrenic and had all these problems at the time,
- 19:59Speaker 1: or was this one of his more click clear moments
- 20:02Speaker 1: and maybe didn't seem like the threat was just the
- 20:04Speaker 1: guy who lived down the street who I've known my
- 20:06Speaker 1: whole life. I don't know. I don't know the answer
- 20:09Speaker 1: to that question. That's something that probably would have been
- 20:11Speaker 1: revealed at trial. He lived with his parents. I think
- 20:15Speaker 1: his parents would have clearly known his problems, because we're
- 20:18Speaker 1: going to get into how he had been picked up
- 20:20Speaker 1: a few times recently, and it is shocking that when
- 20:24Speaker 1: he was arrested, Darien Brown's mother said, this is a setup.
- 20:28Speaker 1: My son is innocent. It's a setup. No it's not,
- 20:32Speaker 1: and no he's not. I get it. She probably has
- 20:36Speaker 1: been trying to help him and protect him his whole life,
- 20:39Speaker 1: with all of his demons and all of his challenges,
- 20:42Speaker 1: but excuse me. A child is dead. A child is dead,
- 20:46Speaker 1: and there's another mother crying, not just you, so agreed. Okay,
- 20:52Speaker 1: So let's get into what was leading up to all
- 20:55Speaker 1: of this, what happened. Let's break down that day, that horrific,
- 21:00Speaker 1: horrific day. Now three months before that horrific day, on
- 21:05Speaker 1: February eighth of twenty twenty one, this is really important.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Darien was accused of trying to snatch a two year
- 21:12Speaker 1: old girl from another house and her seventy year old
- 21:16Speaker 1: grandfather stopped him. He had gotten into the house, he
- 21:20Speaker 1: stopped him. I guess Darien punched him. And this was
- 21:26Speaker 1: only blocks from where cash was taken. Okay. Now, from
- 21:30Speaker 1: your perspective as a cop, don this is like a
- 21:34Speaker 1: complete run through for the next one, right, I mean,
- 21:37Speaker 1: it's the.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Same mo absolutely and for whatever reason, thank God, that
- 21:43Speaker 2: grandfather is there. The interesting part on this is in
- 21:47Speaker 2: what I read, the grandfather decided not to press charges.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Do you understand that when there is a felony broken
- 21:53Speaker 2: in the state, like at least in the state of California,
- 21:55Speaker 2: and I know it's that way in Texas, they don't
- 21:58Speaker 2: have to have the choice. That's right, It's a crime
- 22:01Speaker 2: against the State of Texas. It says the state of
- 22:05Speaker 2: Texas versus so and so in Harrow's County Superior Court.
- 22:09Speaker 3: They don't need the victim per se.
- 22:12Speaker 2: They could have filed on him right then and there
- 22:15Speaker 2: without the victim. They could have whatever we do now.
- 22:18Speaker 2: It's called the there's a proposition, and that says we
- 22:21Speaker 2: don't need to bring people forward for the for the
- 22:23Speaker 2: preliminary trial, and eventually we have to start thinking to society,
- 22:27Speaker 2: is this guy doesn't need to be on the street, right.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I'm not saying that that's the cops, you know, are
- 22:35Speaker 2: at fault, but I got a point of finger that
- 22:38Speaker 2: if he's convicted for that attempted kidnapping and assault on
- 22:42Speaker 2: that elderly man, then you know what, he's going to
- 22:45Speaker 2: jail for a number of years. And I hope he
- 22:47Speaker 2: gets to help, but he got to help get the
- 22:50Speaker 2: help inside of a prison, not outside.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Where he could hurt people. And god damn it, he did.
- 22:55Speaker 4: He killed the child, right, little boy's out here, and
- 22:59Speaker 4: that's on them.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Well. Darien was taken into custody following that incident, and
- 23:03Speaker 1: he was referred to social services by authorities and they
- 23:06Speaker 1: deemed that he was a danger to himself and others. Okay,
- 23:10Speaker 1: so I guess they were thinking, maybe we get him
- 23:13Speaker 1: some mental help as opposed to custody. I don't know
- 23:18Speaker 1: what the thought process was there, but clearly it was not.
- 23:22Speaker 1: It didn't work right. And now here's like, this is
- 23:25Speaker 1: really unusual. The grandfather from that incident said that he
- 23:29Speaker 1: ran into Darien at the local walmart and the Darien
- 23:33Speaker 1: apologized to him for that incident. So, again, was he
- 23:41Speaker 1: having a moment of clarity there? We've already established this
- 23:44Speaker 1: young man has many struggles and is not well. And obviously,
- 23:51Speaker 1: you know, we are not demons ourselves, you know, we
- 23:54Speaker 1: wish people to be well, but clearly he's not well.
- 23:58Speaker 1: He was struggling. It's just it's it's astonishing, right. So
- 24:06Speaker 1: then two weeks prior to Cash's murder, Darien again has
- 24:10Speaker 1: a run in with police and someone reports that there's
- 24:12Speaker 1: this suspicious person in the neighborhood of Redbird, Texas. It
- 24:16Speaker 1: appears that Darien attempted then to run from police and
- 24:20Speaker 1: then was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of evading arrest. Remember,
- 24:23Speaker 1: he had an ankle monitor, which, of course, as I
- 24:27Speaker 1: I mean, do you see the parallels here? Baby monitor
- 24:30Speaker 1: ankle monitor and people think, oh, you slap an ankle
- 24:34Speaker 1: monitor on, you know, either a convicted criminal or a
- 24:37Speaker 1: suspected criminal. And we in society are safe. No, because
- 24:42Speaker 1: if you're not watching the monitor and tracking the monitor,
- 24:46Speaker 1: that's all it is. It will give you information after
- 24:50Speaker 1: the crime has been committed and will confirm locations, but
- 24:54Speaker 1: it does not stop them from committing a crime.
- 24:59Speaker 2: And you know, and I do believe this, we as
- 25:01Speaker 2: a society have way more future than we do past.
- 25:06Speaker 2: And I say that because eventually our eyes have to
- 25:10Speaker 2: open up and there has to be something done in
- 25:13Speaker 2: instances like this. I don't care where he gets help.
- 25:17Speaker 2: I hope that God that the guy is cured and
- 25:19Speaker 2: all that, but I'm sorry, you'll never see the light
- 25:22Speaker 2: of day.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:23Speaker 2: And these people of Texas, if they start coming up
- 25:26Speaker 2: and they start seeing this young man is up for parole,
- 25:29Speaker 2: they better start yelling their asses off. They better be
- 25:33Speaker 2: jumping up and down and going this guy is not
- 25:35Speaker 2: getting released. We're not going to take the chance. What
- 25:38Speaker 2: if he flips out again? Right, What if he you know,
- 25:41Speaker 2: he stubs his toe and that causes him to start
- 25:43Speaker 2: being hateful again. He's already already killed. So you know
- 25:47Speaker 2: what your card's done. It's all PINNs to dance cards over.
- 25:51Speaker 2: You're going to jail.
- 25:52Speaker 3: You have to help, and and I hope you do.
- 25:54Speaker 3: Like I said, I don't.
- 25:55Speaker 2: I don't want anybody to have demons, Hana, you know,
- 25:58Speaker 2: I want be to be clap clarity and at least
- 26:01Speaker 2: not you know, have to worry about that. But there
- 26:04Speaker 2: is a place for him, right and if it's not
- 26:07Speaker 2: a prison, that it's going to be, you know, a
- 26:08Speaker 2: mental institution. And he's never getting out ever. And if
- 26:12Speaker 2: he does, like I said, people better start really really
- 26:17Speaker 2: talking and letting him know that they're not pleased with this.
- 26:21Speaker 2: This guy can't get out.
- 26:23Speaker 1: And it's important to note that the vast majority of
- 26:26Speaker 1: people who struggle with any form of mental illness, they're
- 26:30Speaker 1: not criminals. They don't commit crimes, they don't assault other people.
- 26:33Speaker 3: I agree, you know, there are.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Some dangerous mentally ill people with extreme mental illness who are,
- 26:41Speaker 1: but they're in the minority. It's the tiniest part of
- 26:44Speaker 1: this where you have that. You know, if he has schizophrenia,
- 26:50Speaker 1: we don't know. We just that's what the defense attorney says,
- 26:53Speaker 1: clearly there's something going on. Now, Let's get back now
- 26:57Speaker 1: to the day that Cash was taken. That was May
- 27:01Speaker 1: fifteenth of twenty twenty one. And I just I still
- 27:06Speaker 1: can't believe this was captured by the baby monitor. I
- 27:09Speaker 1: just I honestly, every time I sat there and I
- 27:12Speaker 1: was ill, I get physically ill when I watch this video.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I just I can't believe it. He enters the house
- 27:17Speaker 1: at five am, standing over the crib watching the boy's sleep,
- 27:21Speaker 1: and he grabs Cash, who's on the left side of
- 27:24Speaker 1: the crib if you're facing the crib, and he runs off.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Police say that he took Cash a few blocks to
- 27:31Speaker 1: a nature trail and that's where he stabbed the child
- 27:34Speaker 1: multiple times with some kind of an edged weapon, stabbed
- 27:37Speaker 1: him in the chest. Police say that he took Cash's
- 27:40Speaker 1: body and he dumped it in the middle of the
- 27:43Speaker 1: street like trash, and that the boy's body was found
- 27:48Speaker 1: by a jogger. And as she's approaching, you know, there
- 27:51Speaker 1: was so much blood, and she could see that it
- 27:53Speaker 1: was like a form, right, a life form. She thought
- 27:58Speaker 1: it was a dog that had been hit by a car.
- 27:59Speaker 1: And when she realizes that it's a four year old child.
- 28:03Speaker 1: She's never going to be able to get over that herself.
- 28:06Speaker 1: She can never get over that. She was so traumatized.
- 28:11Speaker 1: So then this lunatic, because that's what he is. I'm sorry,
- 28:14Speaker 1: this lunatic then breaks breaks back into the house after
- 28:20Speaker 1: sunrise at seven thirty am. The monitor captures him staring
- 28:26Speaker 1: at the twin contemplating taking Carter. Thank god, something happens
- 28:30Speaker 1: and he takes off without without the baby. Monica Sheerard,
- 28:36Speaker 1: the woman who was whose house it is, the ex girlfriend,
- 28:40Speaker 1: reported that Cash was missing five hours after that he
- 28:43Speaker 1: was taken, and then when they looked at the video monitor.
- 28:47Speaker 1: They looked at the video, Monica and her teen son
- 28:50Speaker 1: recognized the man who took the child because they knew him.
- 28:54Speaker 1: They knew him as Darien Brown. So then police went
- 28:59Speaker 1: to search Arian Brown's home that's where he lived with
- 29:02Speaker 1: his parents, and they found clothes that match what they
- 29:09Speaker 1: saw on the video, that had Cash's blood on it.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I mean, there's just no way around it. There was
- 29:16Speaker 1: just so so much evidence. When he initially gets arrested,
- 29:20Speaker 1: he is initially arrested. He's arrested on the sixteenth and
- 29:25Speaker 1: booked for kidnapping charges. And then they were waiting on
- 29:29Speaker 1: autopsy results and DNA results and everything. And then on
- 29:32Speaker 1: August ninth, he's indicted on capital murder charges along with
- 29:35Speaker 1: burglary and kidnapping in the death of Cash Gernon. Now
- 29:41Speaker 1: people are asking, well, how did he get into the house.
- 29:43Speaker 1: So neighbors said that their ring doorbell actually caught him,
- 29:48Speaker 1: and you can see him. He's looking at the fence.
- 29:50Speaker 1: And this is a fence that divided the two properties,
- 29:52Speaker 1: and this is where the twins lived, and he's looking in.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Here's the thing done. He's been in the house. What
- 29:57Speaker 1: is he looking at? He already knows, you know, he's
- 30:00Speaker 1: but whatever, and and and so everything lines up in matches,
- 30:06Speaker 1: and now everyone's asking, all right, how do you get
- 30:07Speaker 1: into the house. According to police, he got in through
- 30:11Speaker 1: a garage door, but then apparently broke in through the
- 30:16Speaker 1: door that leads between the garage and the home. Oh
- 30:22Speaker 1: my god. So after he is indicted for the murder,
- 30:29Speaker 1: he's then also now indicted on extra charges. Remember the
- 30:34Speaker 1: seventy year old grandpa with the two year old granddaughter. Well,
- 30:37Speaker 1: now they now they include those charges, which, as you
- 30:40Speaker 1: said very clearly, that should have happened months earlier, and
- 30:43Speaker 1: maybe we wouldn't be standing here having this conversation.
- 30:47Speaker 2: There's no maybe he wouldn't have had the conversation. And
- 30:50Speaker 2: again it's Texas. There's still one of the you know,
- 30:53Speaker 2: the hardest on crime in our country. So and how
- 30:58Speaker 2: this happened and how he got out or just life
- 31:02Speaker 2: with the possibility to patrol I again, that that just
- 31:06Speaker 2: to sud you know, and I, like, I totally started.
- 31:08Speaker 2: I haven't been this amped up in a long time.
- 31:11Speaker 2: I was in Ireland a couple of weeks ago, and
- 31:13Speaker 2: you know, talking to some of their law enforcement guys
- 31:15Speaker 2: there was pretty cool and what they do, and of
- 31:17Speaker 2: course not an eighth anna of the ship that goes
- 31:20Speaker 2: on in this country goes on there not. They had
- 31:23Speaker 2: like two murders in the in the last year and
- 31:26Speaker 2: a half or something in Dublin, and I'm thinking, like,
- 31:30Speaker 2: you don't even carry guns.
- 31:32Speaker 4: Fools, and and you're out there dealing with the you know,
- 31:36Speaker 4: but they don't have noths see, And I don't know,
- 31:38Speaker 4: it's just because we're such a free country that allows
- 31:42Speaker 4: this to happen, and I don't want it.
- 31:44Speaker 2: It's already scary me now that there's constitutional shit going on.
- 31:48Speaker 2: That just really worries me. However, this is ten amount
- 31:54Speaker 2: and to it's an assault of mankind. So the worst
- 31:58Speaker 2: crime that can happen, right, it's the worst crime against
- 32:02Speaker 2: person that can happen. And basically they allowed it. I'm sorry, yeh.
- 32:09Speaker 3: Not the friends the state of Texas, you know, and
- 32:12Speaker 3: what they've done.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Well, certainly they contributed, but at the end of the day,
- 32:16Speaker 1: it was Darien Brown who killed this child.
- 32:18Speaker 3: I get it, yep.
- 32:19Speaker 1: It was at his hands, it was at but there
- 32:22Speaker 1: were opportunities to perhaps stop this man, help this man,
- 32:26Speaker 1: and by helping, I mean get him out of the neighborhood.
- 32:30Speaker 1: And those opportunities were completely missed. And yes, consequences, deadly truly,
- 32:37Speaker 1: consequences absolutely. Now, the judge in this case, initially, I mean,
- 32:41Speaker 1: this was a tough judge. The judge set bail at
- 32:44Speaker 1: an astronomical six point six million dollars. The point was, hell, no,
- 32:49Speaker 1: you're not getting out of here. So at least someone
- 32:52Speaker 1: in the justice system saw the danger of this man.
- 32:58Speaker 1: And as we said that, from that point the path
- 33:01Speaker 1: to get to where we are now was very long
- 33:04Speaker 1: because of the problems with his mental competency and the
- 33:11Speaker 1: defense had tried to make sure that they said they
- 33:15Speaker 1: could never get a partial jury. They didn't want that
- 33:18Speaker 1: video played. Well, duh, the video is evidence. You may
- 33:22Speaker 1: not like it, but it is evidence. So there was
- 33:27Speaker 1: all of this going on, and finally we get to
- 33:29Speaker 1: that day. The trial was set to begin with jury
- 33:32Speaker 1: selection on Monday, October sixth, quite recently, and that's when
- 33:38Speaker 1: the deal came through. So this is a lesser charge.
- 33:41Speaker 1: It's still murder, but it's not capital murder. For the
- 33:44Speaker 1: life of me, I don't understand this little part of parole.
- 33:48Speaker 1: I mean, did the prosecutor, the DA and did they
- 33:52Speaker 1: all think, well, if we just tossed this, we dangle
- 33:55Speaker 1: the possibility of parole, maybe they'll just go for it
- 33:58Speaker 1: and we can be done with it. But in reality,
- 34:00Speaker 1: the parole Board's never going to release him. Here's the thing.
- 34:03Speaker 5: In Texas I've covered murder cases were a man who
- 34:06Speaker 5: killed a little girl a little girl, served only eleven
- 34:12Speaker 5: years and got.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Parle Who and what did he do again? He killed
- 34:17Speaker 1: two more people. So just when you think they were
- 34:20Speaker 1: not going to be paroled, now you can never be
- 34:23Speaker 1: sure what lunatic is making the decision.
- 34:26Speaker 2: And there's evil people in this world. I'm sorry he's
- 34:29Speaker 2: born that way. You're born evil, and I don't know
- 34:33Speaker 2: if those evil people who can be helped.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Victim impact statements were read when the plea deal was
- 34:39Speaker 1: announced in court, especially noting the trauma suffered by the
- 34:43Speaker 1: twin you know, the other one, the other half here
- 34:47Speaker 1: and then the family told Darien that he needs to
- 34:51Speaker 1: find God and that the power of Almighty would be
- 34:56Speaker 1: perhaps the one who would ultimately decide where his soul
- 34:59Speaker 1: would be end up, and then added that God's punishment
- 35:03Speaker 1: would be worse than anything that they could ever deliver
- 35:05Speaker 1: through the criminal justice system, given the lack of justice
- 35:11Speaker 1: in this case by the criminal justice system. She's not
- 35:15Speaker 1: entirely wrong here, not entirely wrong because they had an
- 35:19Speaker 1: opportunity to do betther.
- 35:21Speaker 3: And again, I'm not a religious guy. They if they
- 35:24Speaker 3: find solace in.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Religion and can deal with this, and they believe that
- 35:28Speaker 2: this guy will meet his maker and it's not going
- 35:31Speaker 2: to be the right one, and that gives them comfort,
- 35:34Speaker 2: so be it.
- 35:34Speaker 3: But I don't deal in that. I don't deal in
- 35:37Speaker 3: and pretend stuff.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Or whatever they want to believe. And I believe in
- 35:40Speaker 2: the rule of the law. And I know there's exceptions.
- 35:42Speaker 2: I'm not that hardened. There's no exception here.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Look, my hope is that he will never get out
- 35:50Speaker 1: of prison. And maybe some pain has been spared to
- 35:55Speaker 1: the family here. And it took a long time. We
- 35:58Speaker 1: got some form of justice. It may not be complete,
- 36:02Speaker 1: but at least that man is no longer walking the streets.
- 36:05Speaker 1: It is time now for our comment section. These are
- 36:08Speaker 1: the crime cases that you all are talking about on
- 36:10Speaker 1: social media. And here's our producer, Will updike KWill. How
- 36:13Speaker 1: are you?
- 36:14Speaker 6: How's it going?
- 36:15Speaker 3: Anna good?
- 36:16Speaker 1: I can hear the sirens of the New York PD
- 36:18Speaker 1: going right behind me.
- 36:19Speaker 6: Oh gotcha, gotcha. We can't hear right now, but I'm
- 36:22Speaker 6: sure it'll come up and post dawn. Great to see you.
- 36:24Speaker 3: How you doing? You will? And yeah, that's music to
- 36:27Speaker 3: my hers though cirens.
- 36:28Speaker 6: Okay, we have a case this week that I'm calling
- 36:34Speaker 6: twice Bitten, once shy. If you're familiar with the Great
- 36:37Speaker 6: White nineteen eighty nine hit Once Bitten, Twice Shy, this
- 36:40Speaker 6: is kind of the inverse of that. This case comes
- 36:43Speaker 6: out of Kangaroo Island, Australia, where a man got himself
- 36:46Speaker 6: to the hospital after he was bitten two times by
- 36:49Speaker 6: a bronze whaler shark. So our victim here, a season
- 36:53Speaker 6: surfer in his fifties who's been identified so far only
- 36:56Speaker 6: as Lee by Australian news outlets, was surfing at a
- 37:00Speaker 6: local spot known as the Sewer delightful name there. I
- 37:03Speaker 6: don't know, really, I don't know how it gets that name.
- 37:05Speaker 6: I saw some video of the area. It looks gorgeous,
- 37:08Speaker 6: but it's over in d Estre's Bay. And this incident
- 37:12Speaker 6: occurred just after one pm on October seventh. So the
- 37:16Speaker 6: suspect big air quotes here, is believed to be a
- 37:19Speaker 6: bronze whaler shark, and according to Shark Watch Australia, which
- 37:23Speaker 6: is an online community community dedicated to you know, sharing
- 37:27Speaker 6: and alerting the public about sort of shark encounters, a
- 37:30Speaker 6: little bit about this bronze whaler shark. They're also known
- 37:33Speaker 6: as copper sharks. They're really pretty common there in southern
- 37:36Speaker 6: Australia that can reach over nine feet in length. However,
- 37:39Speaker 6: it's important to note here that they're generally not aggressive
- 37:42Speaker 6: towards humans, which is what makes this story a little
- 37:44Speaker 6: bit interesting because this was not the case for our victim, Lee, here. However,
- 37:49Speaker 6: according to video that was captured of the incident, it
- 37:51Speaker 6: appears there may have been some extenuating circumstances. So as
- 37:56Speaker 6: our surfer lead here was surfing in the bay, the
- 38:00Speaker 6: shark was chasing a seal around this very same bay,
- 38:04Speaker 6: and the seal appears to have been quite clever. As
- 38:06Speaker 6: the shark is closing in on it, this crafty seal
- 38:09Speaker 6: used the surfer as a decoy, ducking underneath the floating
- 38:13Speaker 6: surfer as this shark attacks. So this was bad news here,
- 38:16Speaker 6: of course for mister Lee, who ended up with two
- 38:18Speaker 6: shark bites in the leg, including a deep laceration on
- 38:22Speaker 6: his calf. However, luckily Lee was able to compose himself.
- 38:26Speaker 6: He was able to get himself out of the water,
- 38:29Speaker 6: walked to the vehicle of another beachgoer who helped drive
- 38:32Speaker 6: him to the hospital. Now, this deep calf injury, it
- 38:35Speaker 6: did require some medical treatment, but he was out of
- 38:39Speaker 6: surgery later that evening. He is expected to make a
- 38:43Speaker 6: full recovery. Now Lee here works for a private tour
- 38:46Speaker 6: company there in Australia, and his boss book to media
- 38:50Speaker 6: outlets apparently you know Lee was a little bit shaken up,
- 38:53Speaker 6: but he's a very experienced surfer, well aware of the
- 38:56Speaker 6: dangers of marine life in the bay. And as I said,
- 39:00Speaker 6: this isn't life threatening. He's expected to make a full recovery.
- 39:03Speaker 6: And Lee said that he's just very thankful that he
- 39:05Speaker 6: was able to receive the medical treatment that he did
- 39:08Speaker 6: in a timely manner. So he's all right there. As
- 39:11Speaker 6: far as we know, the shark is still out there.
- 39:13Speaker 6: Like I said, this shark bite community did alert people,
- 39:17Speaker 6: you know, because there was like some blood in the
- 39:18Speaker 6: water and stuff. They did have people sort of vacate
- 39:21Speaker 6: this area around the sewer. Again, can't get over that
- 39:24Speaker 6: as a name for a beach. I've been to some
- 39:26Speaker 6: beaches that could be dubbed the sewer this.
- 39:28Speaker 1: Year does not many in Los Angeles.
- 39:31Speaker 3: Does look like that. And also was the seal ever
- 39:34Speaker 3: arrested and brought in.
- 39:36Speaker 6: Well mean something, they're so crafty, who knows they you know, like,
- 39:41Speaker 6: but it's it's an unfortunate circumstance. I just thought this
- 39:44Speaker 6: one was kind of interesting because, I you know, you
- 39:47Speaker 6: get scared about shark encounters and stuff, but really maybe
- 39:50Speaker 6: what you should be scared of is like a seal
- 39:52Speaker 6: or something pawning this predator off of you.
- 39:56Speaker 2: They say that's why great whites attacked surfers as they
- 39:58Speaker 2: look like seals.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, that's interesting. I didn't know that real quick.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Did you hear about the individual I gus in the
- 40:04Speaker 2: Serengetti that and I don't know the whole circumstances. However,
- 40:09Speaker 2: he was able to free himself from apparently a camel
- 40:12Speaker 2: attack by biting the camel's testicles. True story, true story. Okay,
- 40:19Speaker 2: that is ingenuity. So it doesn't matter animal or man.
- 40:23Speaker 3: If you need to get.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Away that, you got to get him by that.
- 40:25Speaker 2: You know what, The damn camel made out a yelp
- 40:28Speaker 2: and took off on there. I'm just I'm reporting it
- 40:31Speaker 2: as I read it.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Well, what I don't understand will about the shark is, look,
- 40:36Speaker 1: even if they're not predisposed to let's say biting or whatever,
- 40:40Speaker 1: shark attacks. It is a shark, for heaven's sakes, So
- 40:43Speaker 1: I like, why are they looking for this shark. The
- 40:46Speaker 1: shark is just being a shark. I don't get this.
- 40:49Speaker 6: Oh yeah, no, they're not like hunting the shark down.
- 40:52Speaker 6: It's not like Jaws or anything. They're just they're just
- 40:55Speaker 6: letting the public know that there was like this shark
- 40:57Speaker 6: in the area, there was an attack there probably has
- 41:00Speaker 6: to stay out of the area for a little while
- 41:01Speaker 6: because it, you know, the blood and everything could attract
- 41:04Speaker 6: other sharks and that like, that's where you're from my understanding,
- 41:07Speaker 6: where you're more likely to be involved in an aggressive
- 41:09Speaker 6: incident as if there's.
- 41:13Speaker 2: And will you remember the two guys that used to
- 41:16Speaker 2: have the wild tiger and lion?
- 41:18Speaker 3: That can my god, yes, y yes, there's a number
- 41:25Speaker 3: of comedians that that have made light of this.
- 41:28Speaker 1: How where are you going? Now, don where are you going?
- 41:31Speaker 3: I'm only going to say, is it's a lion?
- 41:35Speaker 2: Right?
- 41:35Speaker 3: It was a tiger? What did you expect? Yes, the
- 41:40Speaker 3: one of the guys so that he did he did?
- 41:42Speaker 1: Oh do you know? Oh? You know, I always have
- 41:44Speaker 1: a crazy story to tell because I've been a reporter
- 41:46Speaker 1: for so long that I've been in places and things.
- 41:48Speaker 1: So I was a young reporter in Gainesville, Florida, and
- 41:51Speaker 1: there was a professor at the university who was working
- 41:54Speaker 1: on breaking the code of tigers. You know, he had
- 41:58Speaker 1: been a minute he had It's true, right, can you
- 42:03Speaker 1: imagine I get a sign this story? And frankly, my
- 42:06Speaker 1: feeling is, hey, nobody's dead. It involves animals, so sure,
- 42:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna go. And the man is a real researcher
- 42:12Speaker 1: at the University of Florida. He had also been working
- 42:15Speaker 1: on dolphin codes and communications, and so we went there
- 42:20Speaker 1: to do this story and he gets into the cage.
- 42:24Speaker 1: You know where this is going. He gets into the
- 42:27Speaker 1: cage with the tiger that he has been studying, and
- 42:31Speaker 1: he gets assaulted. Why the tiger, I'm not kidding, And
- 42:36Speaker 1: we're like, So he comes out of the cage, Thank god,
- 42:42Speaker 1: he survives, and he's like, bloody, there weren't a lot
- 42:45Speaker 1: of like, you know whatever, and he's trying and the
- 42:48Speaker 1: whole time he's trying to talk to it in it's language.
- 42:50Speaker 1: It's like he probably said something and upset the tiger,
- 42:53Speaker 1: and then the tiger's like, no, you didn't you just
- 42:57Speaker 1: say that. Oh my god. So this man is professor,
- 43:00Speaker 1: this renowned professor. He comes out and now he's mortified.
- 43:04Speaker 1: He is alive, he's fine, but now he's afraid that
- 43:06Speaker 1: this is like going to hurt his research and he's
- 43:09Speaker 1: never going to be able to finish his research because
- 43:12Speaker 1: now he's been attacked by a tiger. It was such
- 43:14Speaker 1: a moral dilemma for us. I swear to you. We
- 43:16Speaker 1: didn't end up doing the story because John, I know
- 43:19Speaker 1: right you're trying, because here you are.
- 43:21Speaker 3: You're like, oh my god, spoiler alert, Yeah, I don't.
- 43:26Speaker 1: But he did say something to me I never forgot,
- 43:29Speaker 1: besides the fact that I was traumatized by this incident.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Because he did research on dolphins and their communication. He
- 43:35Speaker 1: had spent a lot of time with dolphins. And do
- 43:37Speaker 1: you know what he said to me, Because you know,
- 43:38Speaker 1: everybody likes dolphins, and you go on vacation and then
- 43:41Speaker 1: you can swim with them and you pay all this money,
- 43:43Speaker 1: and he's like, never do that. He said, dolphins are
- 43:46Speaker 1: very sexually aggressive, especially as a human, if you get
- 43:51Speaker 1: in the water with them. Apparently he had been subject
- 43:54Speaker 1: to this aggression himself. And I swear to you, every
- 43:57Speaker 1: time I'm on vacation and they have that thing that says,
- 44:00Speaker 1: go swimming with the dolphins, I'm like, hell, no, oh no.
- 44:03Speaker 6: I know better than that.
- 44:03Speaker 2: Can I give you one more and then and then
- 44:05Speaker 2: I'll get off this thing real quick. My ex wife
- 44:07Speaker 2: and I went to the Grand Caymans and we went
- 44:10Speaker 2: and paid the money to go swim with the rays,
- 44:14Speaker 2: the big eight foots.
- 44:16Speaker 3: I've done that.
- 44:17Speaker 2: They give you food and they say to hold out
- 44:19Speaker 2: your hand and they come in they suck you know,
- 44:21Speaker 2: it's like a section cup and they take it. So
- 44:25Speaker 2: I kind of by the time my honeymoon was five
- 44:27Speaker 2: six days into it, I realized I made a huge
- 44:29Speaker 2: mistaken marrying this lady, my children's mother.
- 44:34Speaker 3: I want to make sure that we I say that.
- 44:36Speaker 4: So she's doing it, and this like eight foot ray
- 44:41Speaker 4: comes up, puts his whole body around her and takes
- 44:44Speaker 4: off with her.
- 44:45Speaker 3: No, God, and the god takes off with it and
- 44:48Speaker 3: went who would believe this?
- 44:52Speaker 4: Right?
- 44:52Speaker 3: Well, they dropped her like ten.
- 44:55Speaker 2: Feet afterwards, and she's screaming, and I'm just standing there, going, bro,
- 44:59Speaker 2: I'm not fucking with the thing because it'll take me
- 45:01Speaker 2: do so someone.
- 45:02Speaker 3: Needs to be here to report it. So it let
- 45:05Speaker 3: her go.
- 45:05Speaker 2: And apparently that's very common for these rays that come
- 45:09Speaker 2: over and because they think you have more food, they'll
- 45:11Speaker 2: wrap you up and they swim off with you for
- 45:13Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 45:14Speaker 3: They won't take you far. Unfortunately for this one.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Oh yeah, how would that looked? Honestly, God, your honor.
- 45:21Speaker 2: The guy the thing picked me up and took off.
- 45:24Speaker 2: I can't swim that fast.
- 45:26Speaker 3: You know.
- 45:27Speaker 6: The moral of the story he is from this comment
- 45:30Speaker 6: is disrespect nature.
- 45:31Speaker 3: You know, I do. I kind of like that.
- 45:34Speaker 6: I do kind of like that aspect of this, Like,
- 45:36Speaker 6: you know, obviously very scary that this this man was injured.
- 45:38Speaker 6: You know, luckily he wasn't hurt, and he you know,
- 45:42Speaker 6: like he acknowledged his boss acknowledge, like you know, they
- 45:45Speaker 6: share this water. They you know, they're part of getting
- 45:48Speaker 6: to enjoy nature, and this thing is like they do
- 45:50Speaker 6: kind of have to share it with these other things.
- 45:52Speaker 2: And I appreciate I appreciate that because coming off of
- 45:55Speaker 2: what we just talked about to laugh about this now
- 45:56Speaker 2: I know that we're absolutely you know, nuts.
- 46:00Speaker 3: Is good. So it is.
- 46:02Speaker 6: I gotta share a couple of comments from people. I'm
- 46:05Speaker 6: gonna start with this one because of Don Gains for Life.
- 46:08Speaker 6: Wanted to know, Okay, but how does this relate to
- 46:10Speaker 6: true crime? And let me tell you. Let me tell
- 46:13Speaker 6: you this segment. Here's how it relates to true crime. However,
- 46:16Speaker 6: the heck I care. I'm the dictator of this segment.
- 46:20Speaker 6: It's whatever I want.
- 46:23Speaker 3: The true old comes out right now, what I want.
- 46:26Speaker 6: That's how it relates to true crime. That's how it relates.
- 46:31Speaker 3: The boy's got a little hired. This he means this,
- 46:33Speaker 3: this is real. I know.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Well. The funny thing is Don, I think you're having
- 46:37Speaker 1: an effect on everyone here. Everyone's on fire today because
- 46:40Speaker 1: Don's here.
- 46:41Speaker 6: Uh Arctic V was complimentary of the seal. They said
- 46:46Speaker 6: smart seal. And I'll just end this one comment from
- 46:50Speaker 6: Bowie who misread the headline. They said glanced and saw
- 46:53Speaker 6: shark drives himself to the hospital man, which I disappointed.
- 46:56Speaker 6: Which that would be a definite story that would make
- 46:59Speaker 6: it to this section, although it has nothing to do
- 47:01Speaker 6: with true crime. And before I get out of here,
- 47:03Speaker 6: do you have any comments you want to share?
- 47:05Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 47:05Speaker 1: I do. From last week's podcast, we had gys Leku
- 47:09Speaker 1: on the YouTuber and we had a crazy case about
- 47:13Speaker 1: a woman who is on trial for allegedly murdering her
- 47:18Speaker 1: fifth husband and she actually had killed in self defense
- 47:24Speaker 1: one of her fiances that could have been number six.
- 47:26Speaker 1: So it's a crazy, crazy case. So odal Gray seven
- 47:32Speaker 1: five six four rights Before you marry a widow, first
- 47:35Speaker 1: ask what killed the husband? Very good points, yes, yes,
- 47:40Speaker 1: very good point. And also Marthanell two won nine zero rights.
- 47:47Speaker 1: Maybe not such a good idea to become somebody's fifth husband,
- 47:51Speaker 1: agree with you?
- 47:52Speaker 6: Hey, now, hey, you know nobody bats a thousand, you
- 47:59Speaker 6: know what I mean. So if you're looking for love,
- 48:02Speaker 6: keep trying, just you know, make sure to make make
- 48:04Speaker 6: sure to do your due diligence. But that'll do it
- 48:07Speaker 6: for this week's conversation. Want to thank everybody who left
- 48:09Speaker 6: those You can do that over on our YouTube community page.
- 48:12Speaker 6: You can of course comment on any video, but that'll
- 48:14Speaker 6: do it for me for this week. Until next week.
- 48:16Speaker 6: Don't do crime.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Don This has been a total pleasure. I'm so glad
- 48:21Speaker 1: that you agreed to come back.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Please please ask me if I'm a loved back on
- 48:27Speaker 2: And I love talking to you.
- 48:28Speaker 3: And I know that from where.
- 48:29Speaker 2: You come from, in your roots and what you've seen
- 48:31Speaker 2: and what you've covered in there. Yeah, so I so
- 48:36Speaker 2: appreciate it.
- 48:37Speaker 1: Oh, we appreciate you, don We know it's your rough
- 48:41Speaker 1: around the edges, but your heart is gold, and you know,
- 48:44Speaker 1: sometimes you just got to say it the way it is.
- 48:46Speaker 1: And we appreciate that your breath of fresh air, and
- 48:48Speaker 1: people are just obsessed with you.
- 48:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Yeah, in the wrong way, though. I want to tell you,
- 48:53Speaker 2: I want to tell you real quick, that's something I'm
- 48:55Speaker 2: working on that we might be able to talk about
- 48:57Speaker 2: later on. I was contacted an attorney who's representing an
- 49:01Speaker 2: inmate of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation that
- 49:06Speaker 2: was brutally murdered in the day room at the Sluna
- 49:10Speaker 2: State Prison. That's number eighty seven this year of inmates
- 49:14Speaker 2: who have been killed or murdered two hundred and nineteen
- 49:17Speaker 2: last year. So I took a look at this, and
- 49:21Speaker 2: the attorney is representing the family of the victim who. Granted,
- 49:26Speaker 2: I don't give a shit on how these guys got
- 49:28Speaker 2: in prison, they belong there. However, they do have an
- 49:30Speaker 2: inigiable rights in prison. So there's a lawsuit and then
- 49:34Speaker 2: we're waiting for the other two murdered things to be
- 49:38Speaker 2: adjudicated by the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. So there
- 49:42Speaker 2: might be something to this to talk about.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Yeah, well, don actually, I do want to share this
- 49:47Speaker 1: with everyone. This week, I got a preview of a
- 49:51Speaker 1: new HBO documentary called The Alabama Solution, and I went
- 49:55Speaker 1: to a news conference with the producers of this documentary
- 49:59Speaker 1: and it looks at the prison system in Alabama and
- 50:02Speaker 1: how a huge amount of inmates are killed die mysteriously,
- 50:09Speaker 1: and that's what this is about. And I had an
- 50:14Speaker 1: incredible conversation with the executive producer. I said, you know
- 50:17Speaker 1: in the world of true crime that I work in
- 50:20Speaker 1: my heart, my heart and everything I do is about
- 50:23Speaker 1: survivor and survivor rates and their rights. But like you said,
- 50:30Speaker 1: you have a right to be treated humanely. And she
- 50:36Speaker 1: said to me, these are murder cases, but they are
- 50:38Speaker 1: just happening in prisons, and we need to focus on
- 50:41Speaker 1: them because they have parents, they have siblings, they have children.
- 50:46Speaker 1: And so that is coming out on HBO Friday. This
- 50:50Speaker 1: podcast drops Tuesday, so it will already be available. It's
- 50:53Speaker 1: called The Alabama Solution on HBO. It is exactly what
- 50:58Speaker 1: you were talking about, Donn. And she said she's got
- 51:00Speaker 1: some cases that didn't make the documentary and she was
- 51:03Speaker 1: wondering if I'd be interested in working with them, But.
- 51:07Speaker 2: Keep you a call. Somebody that's doing it. This is amazing,
- 51:11Speaker 2: Like I said, I put in so many people in
- 51:13Speaker 2: the prison and it's not what they've done, it's what
- 51:17Speaker 2: they're experiencing inside.
- 51:19Speaker 3: And like I said, I don't care. They still are
- 51:23Speaker 3: allowed to be protected. All right.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Another conversation that we're going to have, don don where
- 51:27Speaker 1: can people find you or follow you on social media?
- 51:30Speaker 1: I know you do these like detective things at a
- 51:33Speaker 1: Hollywood hotel.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Okay, So it's moving out and we're there. I think
- 51:38Speaker 2: it's going to the Queen Mary. They got a residency
- 51:41Speaker 2: there so they can follow. It's crimescene live dot com
- 51:45Speaker 2: where it's basically an interactive show with me talking about
- 51:48Speaker 2: some of my murders and then getting the audience involved
- 51:51Speaker 2: in identifying suspects, identifying things that they've seen that they
- 51:54Speaker 2: may not have seen, and then ultimately trying to solve
- 51:57Speaker 2: a murder that I handled. And then wiggle Room dot
- 52:01Speaker 2: com is the producers of all these different things. So,
- 52:05Speaker 2: like I said, I think it's in December that we're
- 52:06Speaker 2: going to the Queen Mary and we'd love that everybody
- 52:09Speaker 2: to come out. And then I have a website don
- 52:12Speaker 2: tebac dot net and I.
- 52:14Speaker 3: Put pretty much everything that's going on with me in there.
- 52:17Speaker 2: So yeah, and if anybody needs anything, you know, I've
- 52:21Speaker 2: got my PI business that we do a lot of stuff,
- 52:23Speaker 2: a lot of police officer and criminality within the police
- 52:27Speaker 2: officers and municipality events. So and we take a look
- 52:32Speaker 2: at everything. So yeah, so I'm around. If anybody needs.
- 52:34Speaker 1: Me, that's terrific. You can find me at Ana g
- 52:37Speaker 1: News Anna with one in. I post sometimes about crime,
- 52:42Speaker 1: other times it'll be about maje on little animals, you know,

- 52:48Speaker 3: And you need that.
- 52:49Speaker 1: Yeah, we all do, right, We have to balance life
- 52:51Speaker 1: with death and we have to. I mean, there's no
- 52:53Speaker 1: way around it. You can also find everything that we
